- 0:00Speaker 1: Chapter eleven of Justification. One those whom God effectually calls
- 0:09Speaker 1: He also freely justifies, not by infusing righteousness into them,
- 0:15Speaker 1: but by pardoning their sins, and by accounting and accepting
- 0:20Speaker 1: their persons as righteous, not for anything wrought in them
- 0:26Speaker 1: or done by them, but for Christ's sake alone, nor
- 0:31Speaker 1: by imputing faith itself, the act of believing, or any
- 0:36Speaker 1: other evangelical obedience to them as their righteousness, but by
- 0:43Speaker 1: imputing the obedience and satisfaction of Christ. Unto them, they
- 0:48Speaker 1: receiving and resting on Him and his righteousness by faith,
- 0:54Speaker 1: which faith they have, not of themselves. It is the
- 0:58Speaker 1: gift of God. Two. Faith, thus receiving and resting on
- 1:05Speaker 1: Christ and his righteousness, is the alone instrument of justification.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Yet is it not alone in the person justified, but
- 1:16Speaker 1: is ever accompanied with all other saving graces, and is
- 1:22Speaker 1: no dead faith, but works by love. Three. Christ, by
- 1:29Speaker 1: his obedience and death, did fully discharge the debt of
- 1:34Speaker 1: all those that are thus justified, and did make a proper,
- 1:38Speaker 1: real and full satisfaction to his Father's justice in their behalf. Yet,
- 1:45Speaker 1: inasmuch as He was given by the Father for them,
- 1:48Speaker 1: and his obedience and satisfaction accepted in their stead, and
- 1:53Speaker 1: both freely not for anything in them. Their justification is
- 1:59Speaker 1: only of free grace, that both the exact justice and
- 2:04Speaker 1: rich grace of God might be glorified in the justification
- 2:09Speaker 1: of sinners. Four. God did from all eternity decree to
- 2:16Speaker 1: justify all the elect and Christ did, in the fullness
- 2:21Speaker 1: of time, die for their sins and rise again for
- 2:25Speaker 1: their justification. Nevertheless, they are not justified until the Holy
- 2:31Speaker 1: Spirit does, in due time actually apply Christ unto them. Five.
- 2:39Speaker 1: God does continue to forgive the sins of those that
- 2:43Speaker 1: are justified, and although they can never fall from the
- 2:48Speaker 1: state of justification, yet they may by their sins fall
- 2:52Speaker 1: under God's fatherly displeasure and not have the light of
- 2:58Speaker 1: His countenance restored unto them until they humble themselves, confess
- 3:03Speaker 1: their sins, beg pardon, and renew their faith and repentance. Six.
- 3:12Speaker 1: The justification of believers under the Old Testament was in
- 3:16Speaker 1: all these respects one and the same with the justification
- 3:21Speaker 1: of believers under the New Testament Chapter twelve of Adoption.
- 3:30Speaker 1: All those that are justified. God vouchsafes in and for
- 3:35Speaker 1: his only son Jesus Christ, to make partakers of the
- 3:39Speaker 1: grace of adoption, by which they are taken into the
- 3:43Speaker 1: number and enjoy the liberties and privileges of the children
- 3:47Speaker 1: of God, have His name put upon them, receive the
- 3:51Speaker 1: spirit of adoption, have access to the throne of grace
- 3:55Speaker 1: with boldness, are enabled to cry Abbah Father, are pitied, protected,
- 4:03Speaker 1: provided for, and chastened by Him as by a father,
- 4:08Speaker 1: yet never cast off, but sealed to the day of redemption,
- 4:13Speaker 1: and inherit the promises as heirs of everlasting salvation. Chapter
- 4:21Speaker 1: thirteen of Sanctification. One, They who are once effectually called
- 4:29Speaker 1: and regenerated, having a new heart and a new spirit
- 4:33Speaker 1: created in them, are further sanctified really and personally through
- 4:38Speaker 1: the virtue of Christ's death and resurrection. By His word
- 4:43Speaker 1: and spirit dwelling in them. The dominion of the whole
- 4:47Speaker 1: body of sin is destroyed, and the several lusts thereof
- 4:52Speaker 1: are more and more weakened and mortified, and they more
- 4:56Speaker 1: and more quickened and strengthened in all savings graces to
- 5:01Speaker 1: the practice of true holiness, without which no man shall
- 5:06Speaker 1: see the Lord. Two. This sanctification is throughout in the
- 5:12Speaker 1: whole man, yet imperfect in this life. There abiding still
- 5:17Speaker 1: some remnants of corruption in every part, whence arises a
- 5:22Speaker 1: continual and irreconcilable war, the flesh lusting against the Spirit,
- 5:28Speaker 1: and the Spirit against the flesh, three, in which war,
- 5:34Speaker 1: although the remaining corruption for a time may much prevail,
- 5:39Speaker 1: yet through the continual supply of strength from the sanctifying
- 5:44Speaker 1: Spirit of Christ, the regenerate part does overcome, and so
- 5:50Speaker 1: the saints grow in grace, perfecting holiness in the fear
- 5:54Speaker 1: of God. Chapter fourteen of Saving Faith. One. The grace
- 6:03Speaker 1: of faith, whereby the elect are enabled to believe to
- 6:07Speaker 1: the saving of their souls, is the work of the
- 6:10Speaker 1: Spirit of Christ in their hearts, and is ordinarily wrought
- 6:14Speaker 1: by the ministry of the Word, by which also and
- 6:18Speaker 1: by the administration of the sacraments and prayer, it is
- 6:22Speaker 1: increased and strengthened. Two. By this faith, a Christian believes
- 6:29Speaker 1: to be true whatsoever is revealed in the Word, for
- 6:33Speaker 1: the authority of God himself speaking therein and acts differently
- 6:39Speaker 1: upon that which each particular passage thereof contains. Yielding obedience
- 6:44Speaker 1: to the commands, trembling at the threatenings, and embracing the
- 6:49Speaker 1: promises of God for this life and that which is
- 6:53Speaker 1: to come. But the principal acts of saving faith are accepting, receiving,
- 7:00Speaker 1: and resting upon Christ alone for justification, sanctification, and eternal
- 7:06Speaker 1: life by virtue of the Covenant of grace. Three. This
- 7:12Speaker 1: faith is different in degrees weak or strong, may often
- 7:17Speaker 1: in many ways assailed and weakened, but gets the victory
- 7:22Speaker 1: growing up in many to the attainment of a full
- 7:24Speaker 1: assurance through Christ, who is both the author and finisher
- 7:29Speaker 1: of our faith. Chapter fifteen of repentance unto lifec one.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Repentance unto life is an evangelical grace. The doctrine whereof
- 7:44Speaker 1: is to be preached by every minister of the gospel,
- 7:47Speaker 1: as well as that of faith in Christ. Two. By
- 7:52Speaker 1: it a sinner out of the sight and sense not
- 7:55Speaker 1: only of the danger, but also of the filthiness and
- 7:59Speaker 1: odiousness of his sins, as contrary to the holy nature
- 8:03Speaker 1: and righteous law of God, and upon the apprehension of
- 8:07Speaker 1: His mercy in Christ, to such as are penitent, so
- 8:11Speaker 1: grieves for and hates his sins, as to turn from
- 8:16Speaker 1: them all unto God, purposing and endeavoring to walk with
- 8:21Speaker 1: Him in all the ways of His commandments. Three. Although
- 8:27Speaker 1: repentance is not to be rested in as any satisfaction
- 8:31Speaker 1: for sin, or any cause of the pardon thereof which
- 8:35Speaker 1: is the act of God's free grace in Christ. Yet
- 8:39Speaker 1: it is of such necessity to all sinners that none
- 8:43Speaker 1: may expect pardon without it. Four, As there is no
- 8:49Speaker 1: sin so small but it deserves damnation. So there is
- 8:53Speaker 1: no sin so great that it can bring damnation upon
- 8:57Speaker 1: those who truly repent. Five. Men ought not to content
- 9:03Speaker 1: themselves with a general repentance, But it is every man's
- 9:08Speaker 1: duty to endeavor to repent of his particular sins. Particularly six,
- 9:15Speaker 1: as every man is bound to make private confession of
- 9:19Speaker 1: his sins to God, praying for the pardon thereof, upon
- 9:24Speaker 1: which and the forsaking of them, he shall find mercy.
- 9:28Speaker 1: So he that scandalizeth his brother or the Church of Christ,
- 9:33Speaker 1: ought to be willing by a private or public confession
- 9:38Speaker 1: and sorrow for his sin, to declare his repentance to
- 9:42Speaker 1: those that are offended, who are thereupon to be reconciled
- 9:47Speaker 1: to Him, and in love to receive him. And of
