- 0:10Welcome to the Pixie Garden Hair Podcast.
- 0:24I am Jess here with licensed cosmetologist Delina Markland.
- 0:28Delina, Dan Druff and thinning hair at the same time.
- 0:31That feels overwhelming.
- 0:32Where does someone even start?
- 0:34At the scalp, every time.
- 0:36And I do not say that as a slogan, I watched it work on my own husband.
- 0:39He fought Dan Druff and thinning for years and tried everything on top of his hair.
- 0:44Nothing held.
- 0:45What finally changed it was treating the scalp itself,
- 0:47exfoliating with the detox scalp scrub,
- 0:50the charcoal, peppermint, and tea tree one,
- 0:52using the rosemary-based boost scrub,
- 0:54and an 18.21 anti-flake shampoo.
- 0:57The flaking stopped, and as his scalp got healthier, he actually saw regrowth.
- 1:01Healthy hair grows out of a healthy scalp, not the other way around.
- 1:04Why does the scalp matter so much for growth specifically?
- 1:07Your follicle lives in the scalp.
- 1:09If it is buried under build-up, oil, and dead skin,
- 1:12or the skin is inflamed, that follicle is not in a great position to do its job.
- 1:16Exfoliating clears the build-up, stimulates circulation,
- 1:19and resets the skin so the follicle has room to work.
- 1:22That is why I start with a scrub instead of another serum on the lengths.
- 1:25A lot of people assume dandruff is just a dry scalp.
- 1:29Are those the same thing?
- 1:31No, and treating one like the other makes it worse.
- 1:33Dry scalp is small, white, dry flakes from a lack of moisture.
- 1:37That one wants gentler, less frequent washing and soothing ingredients.
- 1:41Dandruff is usually larger, oilier,
- 1:44yellowish flakes tied to the scalp's microbiome and build-up.
- 1:48That one wants exfoliation and anti-flake active,
- 1:51like tea tree and charcoal.
- 1:53My husband's was true dandruff, which is why the detox scrub
- 1:57and the 18.21 anti-flake worked when a moisturizing approach never did.
- 2:01Rosemary gets talked about everywhere right now.
- 2:03Does it actually do anything?
- 2:05It supports circulation to the scalp, which is the environment growth depends on.
- 2:08And that is exactly why I keep the boost rosemary, ginger, and caffeine scrub in the routine.
- 2:13I will be honest with you, rosemary is not a guarantee,
- 2:16and I would never sell it that way.
- 2:18What it does is help create a healthier scalp,
- 2:20consistently a few times a week.
- 2:23Consistency is the whole game.
- 2:25Where should someone start at home and when do they need more?
- 2:28Start simple.
- 2:29Exfoliate the scalp 2 to 3 times a week with the detox or boost scrub.
- 2:33Use an anti-flake shampoo like the 18.21 if dandruff is the issue,
- 2:37and give it a few weeks.
- 2:39If thinning is the bigger concern and you want a clinical step,
- 2:42that is where prosel microchanneling comes in.
- 2:44It is the insolent escalation I point clients to when at home scalp care is not enough.
- 2:49Start with the scalp, stay consistent, and escalate if you need to.
- 2:54Fix the soil before you worry about the plant.
- 2:56I love that.
