- 2:42zero eight. Well you may have heard that Chick fil A at South Through
- 2:46it is closing. Well it's it's a temperate calm down, folks. It's
- 2:50just temporary, but it's serious business in the in the world of chicken.
- 2:53When you go messing with the people's Chicken. Tom Minturn from Chick fil A
- 2:58joins us right now, Tom, good morning, How good morning, Dave.
- 3:00How are you, sir? I'm fine, Thank you for being here.
- 3:02It is serious business man, it is start talking about shutting down the
- 3:07Lord's Chicken. Do you realize that, right? Yes, sir, yes,
- 3:08all right, been told, not threatened quite, but just been told.
- 3:12It's like, what are we going to do? Yeah? So tell
- 3:14us the story here. Why is what's the deal here? Why is it
- 3:17closing temporarily? Honestly, it's been twelve years we've been open. We're just
- 3:21we're doing a little refreshed, a little remodel to get us. We have
- 3:24a drive through door and most of you, if you've been to the new
- 3:28restaurant mccorkoro Avenue, you'll see the drive through doors. Just give us some
- 3:30more space. Actually had the bad news. Will be taken out our playground.
- 3:35Not sure, I just been saying on the air. Oh no,
- 3:37you might get some text messages or calling in that one. So, but
- 3:39yes, taking out the playground just to provide more seating, Just providing more
- 3:44because when we open up our drive through, it's going to take away some
- 3:46of the seating. So we just need to replace that seating back. So
- 3:51we're growing, we're progressing. It's a good thing to be in a gross
- 3:53mind. How long has it been open up there? Twelve years? Twelve
- 3:57years November third, so okay, and so there hasn't been any I'm presuming
- 4:00there's not been any major upgrades during that time frame. Right, there's a
- 4:03little things here and there, minor, minor, minor little things, right,
- 4:09new dining, in furniture, those kind of things. That's about it.
- 4:11So what kind of time frame were we looking at now? Is it
- 4:13closed? Now? It is closing on Saturday, close on Saturday. Okay,
- 4:16we'll be well, what was I got to ask you because I'm just
- 4:19weird about this. So was it just like at the end of the business
- 4:23you just closed close to five o'clock? So did you have to run run
- 4:25people out of there? Or what did you do? Kind of we kept
- 4:29four warning and fore warning and we kind of said we knew we'd be busy
- 4:30up and had Grandma put down the chicken. You're out, yes, exactly,
- 4:34pretty much say we can't serve anybody any more people. So, okay,
- 4:39it was it was good our team. We needed a little bit of
- 4:41time to get everything ready, to get things we didn't move some stuff over
- 4:45and make sure we did. All of our team is still employed. They're
- 4:47just going to the Corcory Avenue to we made sure they're taken care of.
- 4:53So I know that was a concern. I've already gotten questions from from the
- 4:56public saying, hey, are they going to be taking us? Of course
- 4:58we're we do. I think we can't, sir. Our team is taken
- 5:00care of. So so what kind of time frame toim are we talking about
- 5:03here? Approximately about two and a half weeks with any remodel, So I
- 5:09just said go ahead, it might as well make it three because you know,
- 5:11no remodel happens according to the time, friend, it never does.
- 5:15That say just give us twenty one days, right, yeah, I mean
- 5:17so. So in the meantime, as you you kind of mentioned there time,
- 5:20there are other chick fil as where people can get their fix between the
- 5:24other men. Yes, sir, you can always go to our other rest
- 5:27of mccorkory Avenue. Alan Smith is the under the one in the mall.
- 5:30He he'll be open as well. So either one of us will take great
- 5:33care of you, and so it'll be good and so growth is good.
- 5:38And even though it's kind of across the road, of course, the big
- 5:40announcement yesterday was about that section of road opening up across the way there at
- 5:45Trace FOURK from Jefferson Road. So that's even though as I said, it's
- 5:48across the way, it's gonna it's going to impact two as well a little
- 5:50bit. Yes, it will ease your access, Yes, easier access.
- 5:54That way you can get your chicken chicken faster and quicker. That's the main
- 5:57thing. That is the main thing. So tell me about about your background
- 6:01this. How did you get in the Chick fil A business? That's that's
- 6:03a great story. So I started with Chick fil A in Lynsburg, Virginia.
- 6:08I graduated from I went to graduate school at Liberty University. But you're
- 6:11a local guy, a local guy from I'm from Fayette County. I grew
- 6:14up there and then moved away for a little bit, and I moved a
- 6:17little bit around the country. I wan my first chick flame Clumbus, so
- 6:19High was there over five years. I had the opportunity to come home to
- 6:23Charleston. As soon as I got the opportunity, I jumped on album to
- 6:27be home, and I told people, I'm doubly blessed get to do what
- 6:29I love to do, sell chicken, impact people's lives, and then also
- 6:32get to do it by home in Charleston. So here is the million dollar
- 6:36question. What is it that makes Chick fil a so popular? In your
- 6:40opinion? I honestly think it's I mean, our food's got to be great.
- 6:43People don't come for the food, but they come back because of our
- 6:45great service, just because we want to make sure we take great care of
- 6:47you. What is the secret to getting people in and out of that drive
- 6:50through as quickly as what you do? It's a system and its efficiency.
- 6:54It's just making sure it's honestly making sure everybody knows what they're supposed to be
- 6:57doing. So right, talking again with I mentor of Chick fil Ay,
- 7:01they closed the Southridge location Saturday at five o'clock two to three weeks. That's
- 7:05which kind of what you're looking at, you know, hopefully. I mean,
- 7:09you know, we're already in the Christmas season. I mean, we
- 7:11like it or not, we're not even Halloween yet, but I know you
- 7:13definitely want to be up and running, you know, in time for the
- 7:15Christmas shopping, which is already going on by the oh, yes, exactly.
- 7:18Well probably not for us, but for some people. Yes, I'll
- 7:21say most of mind starts. My wife Bear takes December tenth. After that,
- 7:26you're working on that right now. That's exactly. So when people come
- 7:30out for the first time, you're planning, like any kind of ribbon cutting,
- 7:32or you're just going to say, hey, we're open, come see
- 7:34the new location. Now we're going to plan on we'll do something for a
- 7:38regrand opening. Try to make it as let's say, as big as possible,
- 7:42to make sure and we do not have all the plans ironed out,
- 7:46but when we're doing something fun for the public, will make sure it's a
- 7:48big announce once everybody knows we're reopening. And so as I say that we're
- 7:53reopening, one of the things I'll make sure that I'll say, well,
- 7:56we need more people, so we're in a growth we're in a growth mode.
- 7:59So and we pay well, we offer benefits for one K we offer
- 8:03all the all the good benefits. Then it's a full package that you can
- 8:07get with us. So one of the things Tom that I have noticed about
- 8:09about Chick fil A is it seems like that a lot of the employees stay
- 8:15there for a while because in the world of fast food, I know you
- 8:16don't like the term fast food, but but it is what it is,
- 8:20and people kind of bounce around there McDonald's or Wendy's or you know, different
- 8:22places whatever. But it seems to me like there's not as great a turnover
- 8:28at at a Chick fil A as are it's some other similar locations. That
- 8:31is true. We're about half the national average, and a lot of it
- 8:33is we pay I mean, honestly, we pay well. We start fifteen
- 8:37sixteen hours an hour, and then you have the abilities to earn up earn
- 8:41more. And then except just the fact we offer all the retirement benefits,
- 8:45we offer insurance, and that's for all team members. That doesn't you know,
- 8:48we don't we don't. We don't say it's not just for leadership.
- 8:52So making sure we're very clear of that. And so we always say,
- 8:54you know, people will come work with us and they stayed because of the
- 8:58culture. We have a really healthy cult or we focused on making sure that
- 9:01we are very competitive at the same time have a great team environment. So
- 9:07one question I want to ask you is about the breakfast that there was introduced
- 9:11to you several years ago. The breakfast continues to be really really hot for
- 9:13Chick fil A. It does, it does, and people always ask me.
- 9:16I said, what's your favorite thing? And I'm like, I said,
- 9:18it just depends. Is gonna be my next question? Sorry, he
- 9:22wasn't trying to get ahead of you, but I'll say, it just depends.
- 9:24Like our spicy biscuits amazing, Our chicken minis, the little rolls,
- 9:28the honey butter on them are great if you want to go to the healthy
- 9:30side, which I like to do sometimes. The egg white grill is amazing.
- 9:33A least have a lot of great so that we have a lot of
- 9:35great products. Our britos are great. I'll say, it's just our chicken
- 9:39biscuits are phenomenal. It's our number one seller, so that and chicken minis
- 9:43are back and forth to number one sellers. And one of the great things,
- 9:46one of the several great things about Chick fil A is the your willingness
- 9:50to give back to the community. I mean, that's a big part of
- 9:52not just your stores, but stores nationwide and worldwide in giving back to the
- 9:56community. To talk about that, but our founder, our truck. They
- 10:00always says, you cannot give God. So I feel like we always have
- 10:03just a personal level. We always have money set aside, like we're these
- 10:07for situations whenever, uh, there's a crisis unfortunately. You know, even
- 10:11when the South Charleston Fire Department in their truck was an accident, like we
- 10:16were able to jump on board and help make sure all their team was fed
- 10:18quickly because we were you know where we all we had the That's one area
- 10:22we get back. Then. We love to support schools and support the students
- 10:26and student athletes and student organizations, just to be able to give back to
- 10:31them to make sure that we're able to help them. We do a lot
- 10:33of fundraising as well, but just just like to give back to the community
- 10:37because they're the ones. They're the ones that come and support us, So
- 10:39we want to be able to give back just who we are. What goes
- 10:43into deciding Tom where a Chick fil A goes because I know every community would
- 10:46love to have every little hollow in your you're sort of a country guy as
- 10:50am. I What goes into deciding where you put a Chick fil A?
- 10:54Because I know people always say, well, I want this in my neighborhood.
- 10:58What, yes, what there's a that goes into it. Oh,
- 11:01there really is. And one of the things is kind of kind of like
- 11:03people were, we do things a little different. We have a real estate
- 11:07department that comes out of Atlanta that does all the selection of all the site
- 11:09selection. But I will say this, they're usually looking for anchor stores,
- 11:13three or four good anchor stores. They're also looking for high traffic areas and
- 11:18looking for places, you know, get close to the interstate, close to
- 11:22university, close to hospitals, those kind of things are you know, where
- 11:26they have a good population. That's the main thing. And one thing is
- 11:30people don't know about sick fl A's. We build only according to cast flow,
- 11:33so we're not a We don't take a lot of credit out. We
- 11:35just build according to cast It's a really important thing for us to make sure
- 11:39we make the right decision. A couple of texts here. One says you
- 11:41won't find better Chick fil A's than Tom's. They are the best. Oh
- 11:46wow, that's a huge compliment. Thank you. There you go. We
- 11:48try our best, tech says Ask him why they don't put the menu side
- 11:52to the very beginning of the lines of the drive through, I always order
- 11:56the same thing because they take your order before you see what they have.
- 11:58Oh, it's a great question. Uh. Part of it is we feel
- 12:01like that a lot of the people already know what they are aware of our
- 12:05brand and know know what they uh. And ironically enough, they're actually their
- 12:09testiness in some places, they're not even putting menus out because they really people
- 12:13already know what they want and know the Chick fil A brand well enough.
- 12:16Now, I don't I don't want to say as a step of arrogance,
- 12:18we don't. We don't want that to happen, but you know, if
- 12:22it's uh, we can definitely make that change. Some I'll do is ask
- 12:24for a menu. We'll get them a menu. So there you go,
- 12:26all right, Uh, Tom mentioned I'm going to ask you this final question
- 12:30before I go, because I have a couple of friends that are in a
- 12:33similar business to to yours. And was there any product that Chick fil A
- 12:37introduced that didn't work? Oh? Wow? Oh, I will say there's
- 12:41a couple of them that have gone away, right, yeah, lot,
- 12:43And there's so much that goes into that and deciding what to keep on the
- 12:46menu and what what what let me okay, I'll ask this part of the
- 12:50question. What is the top selling thing in the menu? Chick fil a
- 12:54chicken sandwnce, just a simple chicken sandwich. I mean I say that in
- 12:56the fry, the fries are the top selling because fries go with all the
- 13:00menu, right, yeah, items, So fries, Like eighty percent of
- 13:03people who order launch menu lunch items get order fries. So it's a huge,
- 13:09huge, But if you think about just the entrees, it's going to
- 13:11be the chicken sallence so, and then the nuggets. Okay, just the
- 13:15just the simple stuff. People like that. People like that. All right,
- 13:18So again, let's recap. You closed on Saturday at five o'clock out
- 13:20at South Ridge, looking at a couple of weeks before you're going to reopen
- 13:22bigger and better than ever. That's right, we're hoping, we're hoping to
- 13:26reopen. I'm thinking it'll be about three weeks, but it could be is
- 13:31at least two and a half, so okay. But sometimes when you're in
- 13:33the you know, in the construction business, or you're you're relying on other
- 13:37people, and especially since COVID, you know, I mean, supply chain
- 13:41issues are still a thing. I mean they really are. And it's the
- 13:43smallest little thing sometimes that you can't get Tom Metro Chick fil A. I
- 13:48appreciate you being here. We'll eagerly be anticipating your opening here in a couple
- 13:50of weeks. Thanks a lot, Thank you, Dave. Appreciate your time,
- 13:52all right, thank you. Hang out with me here for one second.

- 17:34Newsy corresponded Brad mcwhenney, Brad, good morning. Are you a Chick
- 17:37fil A fan? Yes? And I was going to ask you some hard
- 17:41hitting journalism, Dave. Have you had one of those hot demento sandwiches?
- 17:45No? I was actually just talking about that with one of the sales weasels
- 17:48upstairs. I said, I have not tried that yet. I'm anything pimento,
- 17:52anything hot, I'm in. I'm gonna have to do that, but
- 17:56I'm not gonna do it at south Ridge because they're closed for at least a
- 17:57couple of weeks. But now I have not have you? Have you had
- 18:00them? Yeah? Pretty good? You know, good addition to your repertoire.
- 18:07Typically, if I am getting fast food, it's because I'm in the
- 18:11car and I got to go somewhere. So the pimento makes it maybe a
- 18:15slate challenge to eat while driving. I kind of thought about that. I
- 18:18kind of thought about that, but it's it's a worthy variation on your Chick
- 18:22fil A habit. Okay. Nice, And you know, speaking of sales
- 18:27weasels, it seems like it's up to them to send that an email sometime
- 18:30soon and say, hey, there's Chick fil A hot pimento sandwich is in
- 18:34the green room if anybody wants to. Well, Unfortunately, my good friend
- 18:38mister Mintern did not bring any samples in today, so that was the first
- 18:44thing that as they found out who I had on the show, that was
- 18:48the first thing they asked. But he's busy, you know, so we'll
- 18:51give him a passage. But I will say this that when we do various
- 18:55charitable efforts up here, when we've raised money for we just did the deal
- 18:59with Children's Hospital and so on and so forth, the folks at Chick fil
- 19:03A time mentored and the team were awesome to you know, provide food for
- 19:07not only us, but our sponsors and other guests in the buildings. So
- 19:10they're really beg into that. So we'll give them a pass on that.
- 19:12Brad. You posted a story at the website yesterday about the jail crisis in
- 19:18the state. Correcuis Commission Billy Marshall quoted in the story that now our vacancies
- 19:22are under a thousand yeay, but still, Brad, not nearly where they
- 19:29should be. Talk about that, yes, so you know, there was
- 19:33a legislative interim session in August where a couple of things were done to try
- 19:38to use the staff and crisis in the jails, essentially additional money toward starting
- 19:45pay and changing pay skills for COREAGS officers. But that hasn't really set in
- 19:51yet. I mean it's it's we're at the beginning phase of that potentially bearing
- 19:56results. And in the meantime, the correction system has been trying to do
- 20:02things to make these jails jobs enticing for folks, or at least to do
- 20:07a better job of letting people know that employment is possible. You know,
- 20:12if you're looking for a job, think of us. So some of that
- 20:17is incrementally bearing fruit. And as you said, the update to lawmakers yesterday
- 20:22is that at one time across the state the openings in the correction system were
- 20:30one. Now they're at nine hundred and ninety, so a little bit better
- 20:36here and there and on the whole. We's Virginia lawmakers were encouraged by what
- 20:41they heard yesterday. We're talking with Brad mclahanny. Of course, the governor.
- 20:47Brad declared a set of emergency more than a year ago because of all
- 20:49the shortages in the jail system in the state, and that allowed the National
- 20:53Guard to get in there to help. But it certainly is they'll tell you,
- 20:56I know that they're glad to help. They'll do whatever they're told,
- 21:00but certainly not what they're supposed to be doing. And if anything that happens
- 21:06in West Virginia, the National Guards, they've got the responsibility to make it
- 21:10better. So that's been the case with this for more than a year.
- 21:12August of twenty twenty two, Governor Justice declared an emergency. That emergency is
- 21:21actually still in effect despite the bills that meant to raise pay for corrections officers.
- 21:26So still an emergency and still the National Guard in what's Virginia's prisons,
- 21:33jails, and I think the juvenile centers too. I will say, just
- 21:38to clarify for anybody who hasn't been paying total attention, they are not generally
- 21:44serving as the actual guard, but they're doing support roles in the jails that
- 21:49open up other actual correction system staff to do the frontline functions. What Billy
- 21:57Marshall, the Corrections Commissioner, said, yes, is that over time the
- 22:03system hopes to reduce the number of National Guard members in the jails and some
- 22:08of them. You know, National Guard can be a part time role in
- 22:14your life. So in some cases it could be the folks who have had
- 22:18that experience in the jail system. Maybe you're looking for a full time job
- 22:23and so some of those National Guard members potentially could be brought on as as
- 22:27jail system employees. Well, brand interims are continuing today. Anything in particular
- 22:33that you get your island today. There is a meeting going on right now
- 22:38a review committee of the Department of Health and Human Resources, so a couple
- 22:45of things. You know, you might remember that the legislature decided to break
- 22:48DHHR into three Well, that is an ongoing activity. Sherry Young, who
- 22:56is the interim DHHR Secretary and who will head up Department of Health when there
- 23:00are three divisions, is speaking to lawmakers. This is a meeting that last
- 23:07nine to eleven, so I'm not sure when Sherry is speaking. Another aspect
- 23:11of that that's not on the agenda, but it would fall within the realm
- 23:15of DAHHR oversight. You know, Metro News and Chris Lawrence of our staff
- 23:22in particular, has taken a look at that tragic story at Assistantville where kids
- 23:29were being kept under unimaginable conditions in a shed, and the question has been
- 23:34did Child Protective Services respond adequately to reports they heard? Chris and other reporters
- 23:41have had a hard time getting answers from DAHHR, and so you know,
- 23:47we hope to hear from our legislative friends to bring some pressure on DHHR to
- 23:52answer those questions as well. That's the topic of Hoppy's commentary today. If
- 23:56you didn't hear that, it's on the website to read. Hoppy is also
- 24:02having the House Health Chairwoman Amy Summers as his final guests of the day eleven
- 24:07forty five, and that's the topic that they're talking about. Why DHHR could
- 24:14discuss its own actions or lack of action without bringing embarrassment or further scrutiny on
- 24:22these children. The question is about DHHR as an agency. So you know,
- 24:30we in the media operating the public realm, and the legislators who represent
- 24:36communities around West Virginia have a stake in that question. And I hope it
- 24:38comes up at this meeting, and it certainly is on talk line well,
- 24:42and again I don't want to be accused of you piling on because Lord knows
- 24:45that the DHHR folks are hard workers, you know, just like any other
- 24:48profession. For the most part, you know, ninety nine point nine percent
- 24:51of them are hard workers and trying to do what's right. But again,
- 24:55the neighbors have reported, and it was all public record and the police report,
- 25:00Brad, that the neighbors reported that they had called several times, and
- 25:03that apparently, I mean, you don't always when you say nothing was done,
- 25:06you don't always know. We do know that the police actually came out
- 25:08there and saw that everything was okay and went from that point on. So
- 25:12you know, I got accused of kind of piloting on them, and I
- 25:15apologize for that. But yeah, I mean, you know, the the
- 25:18lack of something out there, and as you said, you can release I
- 25:23would think, as somebody who's done pr you can put information out there without
- 25:30jeopardizing any further investigations, without jeopardizing or as you said, embarrassing these these
- 25:36kids that have been through hell out there and and maybe to make sure that
- 25:38this hopefully doesn't happen again. Brad, we haven't had you on since perhaps
- 25:44the worst kept secret in West Virginia politics was announced last week. The Doug
- 25:48scaff switching from Democrat to Republican to run for Secretary of States. Though both
- 25:55of those happened within a day or so of each other, we all knew
- 25:56it was coming. I talked to Doug about it and just trying to get
- 26:00the timing right. Your your thoughts on mister scaff switching from Democrat to Republican
- 26:04and now a run for Secretary of sake, well, best of luck to
- 26:08him, you know it, as he has said, there have been several
- 26:14party switches, but it's very rarely, if ever, been the leader of
- 26:18the Democratic Caucus in one of the chambers. Going pretty quickly from leading the
- 26:26Democratic Caucus to saying I'm going to run statewide as a Republican, that is
- 26:30quite a switch. And even more than the switch itself, the reaction to
- 26:36the switch, I thought was incredibly interesting because you know, if if ever
- 26:41there was a cause for a beer summit between Tony Hodge and Mike Pushkin,
- 26:45two of your favorite guests, well let me jump in here one second.
- 26:49Okay, With Tony, it's not going to be a beer segment. It
- 26:52will be a glass of milk. Okay, And I also know that not
- 26:56with Pushkin either, So we're going to have to have a a a coke
- 27:00or an iced ta summit between the two, but go ahead, the iced
- 27:03tea summit will include mutual skepticism of Doug scaff and his political philosophy because the
- 27:14Republicans. And it wasn't Tony I'm name dropping him because he's a guest on
- 27:17the show. It was Elgim mccartial, the state GOP chairwoman, and then
- 27:22Pushkin on the Democratic side, both sending out press releases within minutes of each
- 27:27other, just you know, jumping off the top rope and Doug scaff and
- 27:36you know, both both essentially saying that he had been a regular on the
- 27:42Democratic side for you know, some of these hot button cultural issues in West
- 27:48Virginia, and so that's something that the Republicans don't want to see, and
- 27:52the Democrats were saying, you know, look, hypocrisy. So I have
- 27:57no judgment on that matter himself, but I did take note of both the
- 28:02press releases that you know, it was it was WWE tag team between the
- 28:10Republicans and the Democrats. It's see as an old school wrestling fan, you
- 28:15know, I try to get as many old school wrestling tidbits as I can
- 28:19there. This is a kin to Oleie Anderson teaming with Dusty Rhodes. This
- 28:22is what this is good in one of the all time one of the all
- 28:26time great angles. I want to try to get this in a little bit
- 28:30later on the show. Got Mac Warner coming up here momentarily, but we'll
- 28:33close with this, Brad. There was a new poll out that was conducted
- 28:36prior to mister scaff getting in the race for Secretary of State that shows the
- 28:41person currently in the lead in the race for Secretary of State hasn't even declared
- 28:45he's running yet, although there is some speculation that he will. And I'm
- 28:48talking about Chris Warner, brother of Macwarner. Chris, of course, a
- 28:52former state and the Republican Party chair, that's been rumored for some time that
- 28:56he was thinking about getting in the race. He issued a statement, I
- 28:59think maybe not long ago, saying that he had no interest in the statewide
- 29:03office. I keep hearing that it's that's it's possible. And this new poll,
- 29:07which I'm going to get into a little bit later on from WV Statewide,
- 29:11has got Chris Warner in the lead over Brian Wood, Chris Pritt,
- 29:17and some of the others. Now, again, this was issued before Doug
- 29:19staff officially got into the race, and Chris Warner is not even a candidate.
- 29:25Your take on that, well, it seems like maybe this would be
- 29:30encouraging. Yet sixty and you're not even a candidate, So you know you're
- 29:37saying that makes me. It eases my guilt a little bit though, because
- 29:41I wrote a story for the Metro News website about Doug Scaff's entry into the
- 29:47Secretary of State's office, and I listed the people to my knowledge who are
- 29:52candidates, and that's Ken Reid from the Eastern Peniandole Brian Wood, the put
- 29:57mc canny clerk print the delegate from Kannak County. And I did not put
- 30:03Chris Warner in the story. And this morning when I saw that poll,
- 30:07I thought, oh, is he a candidate? I feel bad. I
- 30:11didn't. I didn't. I didn't include it. But if he's not a
- 30:15candidate, then I can, I can, I can put my guilty baggage
- 30:18down and it's okay, Well, no one is officially candidate till January anyway,
- 30:22so you can always go with that. That's what I'm going with,
- 30:26you know, it's I'm going to switch from a from wrestling references to auto
- 30:30racing references. And Chris Warner very well in this case, could draft off
- 30:37of the Warner name which has been established in that office now over over two
- 30:41terms. And you know if he does, if he does decide to get
- 30:45in, he's clearly got a good chance and some neighboring mission. Brad,
- 30:52I know you'll be keeping eye of the interims today and we get that meeting
- 30:53going on right now. As you said, we'll be following along on the
- 30:57website and all of the socials. Brad mclhenny will talk against Sue Man.

- 35:07Good morning, sir, how are you? Good morning Dave. Good to
- 35:10be with you before I get in to what you're actually here to talk about.
- 35:15I want to bring this up to you. Last Thursday we had another
- 35:16person jumping into the race from the job you currently hold Secretary State. That
- 35:21being done scaff Now we know Putnam County Clerk Brian Wood has said he's running.
- 35:23Can read another former legislature running, as is the current Member of the
- 35:27House, Chris Pritt. There are rumors that others may get in. We
- 35:30talked about that earlier. It seems like a popular job to run for in
- 35:32twenty twenty four. I'm going to keep this really generic here, sir.
- 35:37Regardless of the person running, what advice might you have to anyone who wants
- 35:42to be the next Secretary of State, Well be ready for being in the
- 35:47middle of a lot of action both nationally with regards to election integrity and security.
- 35:53West Virginia has made a name for itself. Our kirks have done a
- 35:58fantastic job in cleaning up ODER registration lists and that sort of thing Da've tacket
- 36:04in. Our Information Technology department has become recognized across the United States as being
- 36:10a leader in the cybersecurity arena. Our Fusion Center has done a great job
- 36:15with regards to keeping us surprised of cential threats, you know, hacking and
- 36:22that sort of thing. And then I can cross over since I have the
- 36:25Fusion Center on my mind in that's regard to what we just announced last week,
- 36:29and that was Businesses Against Human Trafficking, an initiative that is involving all
- 36:35of our one hundred and forty three thousand businesses and charities across the state where
- 36:38we're trying to keep people informed about watching for human trafficking, be aware that
- 36:46this does happen. And so that's why we're involving the businesses. We've had
- 36:51a great response already to that, and so that's what I love about this
- 36:55job is there are so many aspects from the elect which creates a lot of
- 37:00attention to businesses or involvement with all the businesses across the state. There's always
- 37:07something bubbling in the second day of State's office, and now we're into artificial
- 37:13intelligence and generative AI, these sorts of things. We're using this leveraging technology
- 37:19to make the customer experience more user friendly and more productive and consistent in the
- 37:24advice that we give to businesses across the state. So it's an exciting job.
- 37:30Put your seatbelt on you ready for a lot of activity, would be
- 37:34my advice to anybody looking for this job. Sir, you've been around politics
- 37:37for a while, as have I, and you'd have to admit that social
- 37:40media has changed everything about the world of politics, and not always for the
- 37:45better. Now I would say that social media has changed the whole world for
- 37:47the worst. That's just me being a grumpy old man. I was interested
- 37:52to read that your office has issued a warning of sorts to several of the
- 37:57largest social media platforms. I mean that they need to treat all candidates fairly.
- 38:02What exactly did you mean by that? Well, I appreciate you talking
- 38:06about this, and social media has changed the world. I think a lot
- 38:09of people have made the analogy to as much as Gutenberg's printing press did and
- 38:15that changed the world and led to the Reformation and that sort of thing with
- 38:20the Bible and putting that in the hands of the common person. Well,
- 38:22now the common person can put a message out to the world in a matter
- 38:27of seconds with the Internet in today's world, So it really has changed the
- 38:32world of news and information around the world. So anyway, the power of
- 38:37these companies and I'm talking Facebook, Google, Twitter, from all these online
- 38:44media platforms have I know, an unusual amount of power and reach. So
- 38:51think of it. I like to think of them as basically a utility company.
- 38:53And so my analogy would be, why should a company determine what is
- 39:02truth, what is valuable, what's not valuable, and used their enormous power
- 39:08to influence an election, either for a candidate or against a candidate. And
- 39:13so what I'm talking about is like the deplatforming that occurred when Twitter took President
- 39:16Trump off of its platform. They were determining what the people got to hear
- 39:22and what they didn't get to hear. And then you go to the other
- 39:24side, which is the Hunter Biden laptop that Facebook suppressed the story at the
- 39:32request of the FBI. So there are two levels of problems here. One
- 39:37is the Facebook doing it and the second is the FBI encouraging Facebook to do
- 39:40it when they knew, in fact that the Hunter Biden laptop was real.
- 39:45They knew that at the time, but they suppressed that to help Biden get
- 39:49elected in the twenty twenty election. So that actually influenced the outcome of a
- 39:52presidential election. So what I'm saying is here in West Virginia, we went
- 39:57free in fair elections. Either these companies need to be neutral and fair in
- 40:04their application of spreading information, or they need to report this as a campaign
- 40:08finance contribution if they favor one side versus the other. That was the essence
- 40:14of the letter. And so think of I use the utility company, but
- 40:17maybe the phone A phone company is a better example. If the phone company
- 40:22is tapping your line and hearing you talk about politics, and they say,
- 40:25oh, we don't like their particular politics, so we're going to cut off
- 40:30their service. Or a bank that looks at your checks and sees how you're
- 40:34spending your money towards a certain political campaign or issue and say, oh,
- 40:39we don't like the way you do that, so you can't bank at our
- 40:42bank anymore. That's the equivalent now with what these social media companies are doing.
- 40:45And so either it gets technical with Section two thirty protection, which allows
- 40:52a company to not be responsible for what goes on its platform. So that's
- 40:59what the internet companies have enjoyed the privilege of. But then when they start
- 41:05to exercise their own power and say we're going to promote this or through an
- 41:08algorithm suppress a story. Let's say COVID nineteen and vaccinations. We saw that
- 41:15occurring here a couple of years ago. An online platform shouldn't be able to
- 41:19determine whether you can say a vaccine is good or bad. It's either a
- 41:24conduit that simply lets you put on whatever you want and that way it remains
- 41:29neutral, or if it starts to suppress one or promote one, then I
- 41:34think that's when they enter it. They stopped being neutral, They've started advocating.
- 41:38And in the elections world, which is I'm the chief elections officer for
- 41:43the state, I'm saying, if you do that in West Virginia, if
- 41:45you favor one side versus the other, you need to report that as a
- 41:50contribution in kind as a campaign or an independent expendster on behalf of a candidate
- 41:54or a campaign. Now, you know, again, let's be clear,
- 41:58you aren't talking about limiting at least, this is the way I read your
- 42:00press release, limiting what individuals post, like what Dave an And post or
- 42:05mac Warner or the individual post. You're talking about algorithms and things of that
- 42:09nature. You know you're talking about them suppressing certain things. Now you sent
- 42:13this warning letter to the largest of the platforms, Facebook made a Twitter now
- 42:17known as Zach's Truth, Social Rumble, and even Google. Have you heard
- 42:22back from any of them? I have not, and actually I probably don't
- 42:28expect to, because we did this three years ago with Facebook. We've been
- 42:31asking Facebook to be transparent for a number of years and they've blown us off,
- 42:35and I expect that's what they'll do here. But when I have a
- 42:37candidate complain, and I have had candidates in the past complain that their messages
- 42:44are being suppressed, probably through algorithms, when they use a certain term,
- 42:47then that kicks it into somebody's spam spam versus going into their actual inbox.
- 42:52Those are the type things that I think are happening. When that happens in
- 42:55the future, after we've put them on notice with this, then I think
- 43:00that we will probably use the powers of the SEC, the State Elections Commission,
- 43:04to call them in and have them either testifying or oath or show us
- 43:08the algorithms we're unforced that transparency that they're right now are not providing us.
- 43:15So let's talk about campaign for governor. How's it going. It's going great.
- 43:19I think things are The word is spreading and I'm getting out there all
- 43:23over the state, getting great reception everywhere we go. But we've been talking
- 43:28about that. She has been talking to teachers. I've been in a number
- 43:30of schools and I'm hearing all the problems with hiring teachers, keeping teachers,
- 43:35the respect that teachers are not getting and they need to have, they need
- 43:37to be able to The discipline situation is out of control. The wokeness that
- 43:44has occurred in some places, not everywhere, but in some places is out
- 43:46of control. Had a teacher that said that she just couldn't take it anymore
- 43:51when she referred to girls as girls versus students. And somebody complained that this
- 43:55wokeness and they have to be careful what they say and how they say it.
- 44:00We teachers just wanted people to teach. And so I'll be a governor
- 44:04that will be the education governor and provide those teachers the respect to pay that
- 44:07they're due, and let parents have a voice in the school and the curriculum,
- 44:13all those sorts of things. But we have problems, you know,
- 44:15talking about the correction facilities and National Guard DHHR, child of Protective Services.
- 44:21We have problems all across the state that need to be addressed. I plan
- 44:24to tackle those. I'm going to use my military background where I've handled crises
- 44:29before and handled large agencies before. I worked in Afghanistan for five years.
- 44:34I've dealt with broken societies and problem societies. I worked at the Supreme Court,
- 44:38the Attorney General's Office, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Women's Affairs,
- 44:43so I'm accustomed to working with large agencies. And that's what a governor does,
- 44:47is he manages the large state agencies. So I'm really looking forward to
- 44:52it, and I'm excited to use what I've learned in the Second State's Office
- 44:55and apply at the governor level to help all the state and to address streamline
- 45:01and make these state agencies more efficient, just as we've done in the Secondary
- 45:06of State's Office. Secretary of States and Canada for Governor Mac Warner. Appreciate

- 48:27Cahs, I need to quickly correct something I said on the show yesterday.
- 48:30I quoted some poll numbers that were given to me from a online media outlet
- 48:35West Virginia state Wide. They were correct numbers and a poll for governor,
- 48:38but the poll itself was a bit old, and I do apologize for That's
- 48:42what you get for not checking it out for yourself. It was sent to
- 48:45me by a friend, no ill intent, just just a mistake that hav
- 48:49him and said, this is not a mistake. The same outfit, wv
- 48:52Statewide News is out with a fourth quarter telephone poll for Secretary of State,
- 48:55and I've kind of referenced this a little bit earlier. Editors note they will
- 49:00be releasing poll numbers for state Auditor, AG and governor throughout the week.
- 49:05This poll, as I said, though was for Secretary of State. Calls
- 49:08were made to Republican voters who have voted in at least three of the last
- 49:13four primary election and the poll shows that Chris Warner, brother of current Secretary
- 49:17of State Macwater, in the lead in the race for Secretary of State,
- 49:21even though Chris Warner isn't even in the race, some widespread slat wide sports
- 49:25speculation that he might be. The poll had Chris Warner at sixty four percent,
- 49:30Delegate Chris Print a distant second at fourteen percent, followed by former Legislator
- 49:34Can Raid at eight percent, current Putnam County Clerk Brian Wood at six percent,
- 49:37Steve Harris, Kenny Mann, and a few others are rounding out to
- 49:40the bottom. Some of those aren't even candidates. The poll was conducted before
- 49:46new Republican Doug scaff in the race, and it is worth noting that again
- 49:51some of those have not even declared that they are in the race. Five.

- 51:46done a tremendous job and he would be an excellent governor if Republicans replace a
- 51:51man like that with scaff lord help us. According to a texture, why
- 51:55would Republicans want to elect mac Warner when he worked for Hillary Clinton? Says
