- 0:41The f A Hey, y'all, welcome to today's show. I hope you're
- 1:03enjoying the last few days of spring. It is rather hot in North Carolina
- 1:08for this time of year, but it's pretty nice and sunny. We'll start
- 1:14as we usually do with the radio replies, and today the questioner posits makes
- 1:22a statement, I cannot believe that the church was founded upon Peter. It
- 1:26was built upon Christ, who is the true foundation stone. And the priest's
- 1:32answer, No one claims that Saint Peter was the principal foundation stone, but
- 1:36that the church, which is in communion with Saint Peter and his successors,
- 1:40is the genuine church built upon the foundation of Christ. Christ himself said to
- 1:45Peter, thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church.
- 1:49Christ is the solid rock upon which the church is built. But the
- 1:52first rock laid upon the foundation is Peter, Christ being the principal foundation stone,
- 1:57Peter being the second secondary foundation chosen by Christ. And the person says
- 2:02Christ said upon this rock, meaning himself, not Peter, and they answer
- 2:07that as erroneous. In John one forty two we find that Christ saying to
- 2:12Peter. We find Christ Saint to Peter. Thou art Simon, thou shalt
- 2:15be called Sipha. Cephis is interpreted as Peter. Christ had a special purpose
- 2:23in thus changing the name to Cephis or rock, a purpose manifested later on
- 2:29and recorded by Matthew in Chapter sixteen eighteen, Thou art Peter, and upon
- 2:36this rock I will build my church. Let us put it this way,
- 2:38supposing that your name was brown, and I said to you, they call
- 2:43you brown, but I am going to call you stone. And upon this
- 2:47stone I will build up a special society I have in mind to establish.
- 2:52Would you believe that I was alluding to you or to myself? Now Peter's
- 2:55name was Simon, and Christ change it to Peter or in the original Aramaic
- 2:59langug which kepha, yes kepha, which was the word for rock or stone,
- 3:07and which would never be used as a proper name in language. Thus
- 3:10he said, thou art kepha, and upon this kepha I will build my
- 3:15church. In modern English, it would tell thus upon mister stone, and
- 3:20upon this stone, I will build my church. The word cannot possibly refer
- 3:23to Christ in this text, a person says, but in the Greek text
- 3:30the word for Peter is Petros, and for stone petra. They are not
- 3:35the same. And they say there is no value in pointing out the difference
- 3:38of form in the word according to Latin or Greek languages, in which they
- 3:43are accommodated by the masculine for Peter as man of the feminine, and to
- 3:47the feminine for stone. Our Lord spoken Aramaic, which is the form is
- 3:53in which the form is the same in both cases, simply kepha. In
- 3:58other words, just like in French or Italian or Spanish, you have masculine
- 4:01and feminine words. So Petra is the word for rock, but it couldn't
- 4:06be used as the name for a man. It had to be changed to
- 4:10Peter. But kepha is the same regardless in the Aramaic language. The person
- 4:18says, you appeal to Aramaic. I know nothing of that, nor of
- 4:21the Latin, nor of the Greek. I accept the Bible as it is
- 4:26an English form in which the two words Peter and rock are nothing whatever alike.
- 4:30What an idiotic statement. How can you appeal to the English form If
- 4:36the English translation does not adequately express what Christ meant? Surely you want the
- 4:42exact teaching of Christ. The English version is not an infallible rendering. Nor
- 4:46does any one verse in these matters claim, nor does anyone versed in these
- 4:51matters claim, that the English language fully expresses the sense of the originals.
- 4:56But apparently you are content without the truth if it is not to be discovered
- 5:00superficially by the reading of your talismanic English version. Now that is a very
- 5:08good, very good way of putting it. Many people, especially those who
- 5:13swear by the King James version, act as if it came out of heaven
- 5:19and was the original Bible. By no means it was the original Bible.
- 5:24Remember, Jesus did not leave us a book. He left us a church.
- 5:28The church compiled, composed, wrote, and translated the Bible. As
- 5:32I've said many times, there was no intact Bible that every church had.
- 5:39They had bits and pieces of this and that. Especially the letters from the
- 5:42apostles would go to one church and that was the letter for this church,
- 5:46and another church didn't have that letter, like the church at Corinth didn't have
- 5:50the letter that was sent to the church at Ephesus. Right Saint Jerome in
- 5:55the three hundreds translated all the books of the Bible into Latin. Some were
- 6:01written in Hebrew, especially the Old Testament. Some were written in Greek.
- 6:05Many books of the New Testament were written in Greek. There was a mix
- 6:09of Aramaic, there was a mix of Latin, because some of the writers
- 6:15of the Bible, the authors of the Bible were Roman citizens and in versed
- 6:19in Latin. But most of the New Testament was actually in Greek. So
- 6:24Saint Jerome took everything and put together, put it together in the universal language
- 6:30of the time, which was Latin. That was the predominant Bible. The
- 6:36official Bible of the Church still is in its original Latin form, the bibliosacravolgada
- 6:44for you know, good fifteen hundred years. But that did not prohibit the
- 6:46Bible being translated into other languages. In the early centuries of the Church.
- 6:51It was translated into Gaelic, Irish, long before the Anglicans. There were
- 6:59Bibles translated into English early you know Anglosh Saxon or Old English. German.
- 7:05There were German Bibles long before Martin Luther was ever born, centuries before and
- 7:14you know, actually Gutenberg who built the printing press to make the Bible more
- 7:17available, he was Catholic. The King James version of the Bible was quite
- 7:24recent in terms of Christian history. It's essentially the same age as the Dewey
- 7:29Reems version, which was another English translation of the original Latin Bible. I
- 7:33have my dewey Rems right beside my Bibliosacro, my Latin Bible, and they
- 7:39correspond identically. You can see where the word that had to be adapted to
- 7:43English because we don't have masculine or feminine was done, and it makes total
- 7:47sense. I don't read Greek, but there are many Greek versions of the
- 7:53Bible that would also correspond almost, I mean identically with you know, certain
- 7:58changes of grammar from Greek to Latin. The King James version is like almost
- 8:07worshiped by Protestants because it's the authorized version of the Anglican Church, which means
- 8:13it's authorized by the King of England. Why it's respected in America, I
- 8:18don't know, because we fought two words to get away from the British.
- 8:20But there are so many Protestants that will say, I only respect the King
- 8:24James version of the Bible and truly believe it was the original Bible and have
- 8:30no knowledge of Church history and literally think it basically came out of heaven.
- 8:33Intact, and I mean it's pure ignorance. And when someone's that willfully ignorant,
- 8:41I mean you show them. Okay, here's even an older copy of
- 8:45the Chief King James. Right, The King James has been revised hundreds of
- 8:48times. It disagrees with your King James Bible. I don't believe that.
- 8:52I only believe this King James Bible that my church uses. It's really hard
- 8:56to get very far with a person. And where they say your talismanic version
- 9:01of the English Bible, yeah, they actually do think of it as almost
- 9:05like a magical book. I mean, you know, they accuse Catholics of
- 9:11worshiping statues and they get all upset because we have Jesus on the cross as
- 9:15a crucifix, right, and then they'll basically hold up the Bible and worship
- 9:20it. I mean, I've seen many ministers hold the Bible aloft as they
- 9:22pray. Nothing wrong with that. It's the word of God, but it's
- 9:26not God himself, especially when you have a faulty translation, an incomplete Bible.
- 9:33You know, Martin Luther starts stripping books of the Bible out that he
- 9:37didn't like and change the very words of Jesus So when you change the words
- 9:41of Jesus to match your human doctrine rather than conforming your doctrine to the words
- 9:46of Jesus, is it still the word of God? I consider the King
- 9:52James, and you know, most we all Protestant Bibles because they're incomplete,
- 9:56and because the words of Jesus were changed counter fit false bibles. I respect
- 10:03it as a Bible, right. I respect the faith that Protestants have in
- 10:07that Bible. But it's a counterfeit, fake Bible. Their intent does not
- 10:13make it true. And many just you know, flip open open a page
- 10:20at random, read a passage out of context and think they've been inspired by
- 10:24God, and come up with all kinds of crazy stuff, crazy stuff like
- 10:28the Rapture. If you had a real intact Bible and read things in context,
- 10:33and had the teachings of the Church, which I mean from Saint Augustine
- 10:37going you know, way back, have been I guess, Saint Beautie,
- 10:43of many many I'd have to go through a whole list, have done commentaries
- 10:46on like the end Times and the Tribulation and you know, the Antichrist and
- 10:52all that. The you know, the doctrine of the Rapture is only about
- 10:56seventy years old, and it's total total heresy. It has no basis in
- 11:03sound biblical scholarship or the traditional teachings of Christianity. I mean, Saint John
- 11:09the Apostle was the longest living of all the apostles. He was in communication
- 11:16with the early church fathers. I mean they wrote letters back and forth.
- 11:24It really I think the Saint Polycarp and he corresponded several times. We have
- 11:28those letters. If there had been teaching such as the Rapture and all this,
- 11:33like you know end time stuff, or like once saved, always saved,
- 11:37or the Bible alone or faith alone, etc. That Protestants believe,
- 11:43you know, he would have made that really clear. The early Church would
- 11:46have known what was the meaning of the Book of Revelations, et cetera,
- 11:50et cetera, et cetera. Yeah, I mean pope's say, Clement of
- 11:56Rome I believe was confirmed by Saint Peter himself. He was like the third
- 12:01Pope. I believe Linus Cletus well the fourth pope officially. Then I think
- 12:09Justin Martyr if it was he a polycarp or Justin Martyr was confirmed by Saint
- 12:15Paul. The other one was confirmed by Yeah, the other one. Yeah,
- 12:22that's right. I think polycarp was confirmed by Saint Paul. He knew
- 12:26exactly what Saint Paul meant in those letters, like he was working out his
- 12:31salvation and fear and trembling. How can you work out your salvation or making
- 12:35up the sacrifice of Christ in his own body and his own suffering for the
- 12:39church. How can you make sense of those words? If such doctrines as
- 12:43once Saved, Always Saved were legitimate, obviously they were not known to the
- 12:48early Church, who learned directly from the Apostles, long before there was a
- 12:52Bible. We do one last one here have not many authorities held that Christ
- 13:00intended to build his church not upon Peter, but upon Peter's confession of faith
- 13:05in his divinity. That's another Protestant canard that has no foundation in biblical scholarship
- 13:11or the traditions of the Church as handed on to us by the Apostles.
- 13:16They say, and really, this is what most Baptists will tell you,
- 13:20and probably young Methodists to This is exactly their argument. But even in the
- 13:24time this book was written in nineteen thirties forties, they said that is an
- 13:28antiquated interpretation abandoned by all the best scholars. See, we don't really have
- 13:33much scholarship today. We have like you know, Bible colleges and Presbyterian and
- 13:39Methodist universities that are completely cut off from history before Martin Luther. I mean
- 13:46they'll pick and choose. Yeah, they'll take a little bit of you know,
- 13:48acquint as, a little just war doctrine here and there, a little
- 13:52bit of this that, But as far as the development of doctrine through the
- 13:56past two thousand years, they refuse to read anything that doesn't agree with their
- 14:01doctrine. I've told you that before. The head of the theology department,
- 14:07I believe it was, well, one of the heads. No, that
- 14:11wasn't the head. I shouldn't say that, but one of the higher ranking
- 14:13professors in the department. When I said, you know, he said,
- 14:18we believe that drinking any even a drop of wine, is a sin.
- 14:22I said, but wait a minute, Jesus not only made wine, he
- 14:24drank wine at the passover meal, et cetera, et cetera. Right,
- 14:28And he said, we don't believe that. Our doctor says this. I
- 14:31was like blown away. I'm like, how can you not believe this.
- 14:33I started explaining to him the science of fermentation, how wine in the Bible
- 14:37was just like wine today. The yeast that is on the grape skin turns
- 14:41the sugars in the grape into alcohol. And without refrigeration, pasteurization, anything
- 14:46like that, there was no way to prevent grape juice in the Bible from
- 14:50becoming wine really within twenty four hours. I mean most of the alcohol is
- 14:54produced within the first three days, okay, and really most of it in
- 14:58the first day. I mean, then you'll see your if you ever make
- 15:01your own wine, it will be foaming like crazy when that ye starts eating
- 15:05that starts eating that sugar. He said, we don't believe. That's not
- 15:09our doctrine. Another time, he says all dancing is a sin, and
- 15:13I'm like, well, wait a minute, didn't King King David or I
- 15:16guess it was King David. I'm blinking right now, but dance for joy
- 15:20when he was bringing the arc back to Jerusalem and was even criticized by his
- 15:24wife for dancing. We believe that all dancing is a sin. Okay,
- 15:28that's our doctrine. You know. There were so many things I ran into
- 15:33that, I mean, ever once saved, always save. I started quoting
- 15:35different passages of the Bible, Jesus talking about the parable of the sore,
- 15:39how some of the seed would be in rough, rocky ground, shum shallow
- 15:45ground, someone in fertile ground. And he even says those who heard the
- 15:50word and believe, but they fell away, they were drawn by worldly temptations.
- 15:54How and you know it says in Well again of the Revelations that during
- 15:58the Tribulation there'll be a great apostasy, most of the Christians on earth will
- 16:03fall away, will renounce their faith. Yeah, I mean we can go
- 16:07on and on. I mean getting into Saint Paul is very very explicit about
- 16:12such things. I mean, the man that in the church who was having
- 16:17an incestuous affair, he said, if he will not listen to the church,
- 16:21let him beat of these as a heathen. Can I mean, he
- 16:26goes even further than that. I mean he said, deliver him to the
- 16:30devil. In other words, he's excommunicated, and unless he repents and changes
- 16:36his ways, he's no longer to be considered a Christian and not to receive
- 16:40communion. He's excommunicated. Didn't know our doctrine says this we don't believe it.
- 16:45Okay, all sins are created equal. It says in the Bible,
- 16:48there's certain sins that cry out there's and if you lead one of these little
- 16:52ones astray, better for you to have a weight tied around your neck and
- 16:55thrown in the ocean, and all sins will be forgiven, except sins of
- 16:59the it's the Holy Spirit. But you're telling me that a six year old
- 17:04child who steals a pack of bubble gum from a gas station is equally guilty
- 17:10of just a serious sin as a mass murderer who kills and rapes thirty seven
- 17:15people. You don't believe that. Our doctrine states that, therefore we believe
- 17:18it. Yeah, whatever, Anyway, after saying that, no scholars still
- 17:26believe that, which they do now in this age of internet scholarship, Christ
- 17:32did demand a profession of faith from Peter as a prerequisite condition after that,
- 17:38conferring fundamental premacy or primacy upon him personally. But to say that the profession
- 17:45itself was the rock has not a single valid reason in its favor. Those
- 17:48who adopted such an interpretation did so from their desire to avoid Catholic doctrine.
- 17:55Grammatically, the Catholic interpretation alone is possible. Textually, the whole passage obviously
- 18:02refers to Peter's person, blessed art Thou, I say to THEE thou art
- 18:06Peter, I will give to THEE the keys, et cetera. Not could
- 18:11the church be built upon an article of faith? All the articles of faith
- 18:15are essential Christianity. The Protestant scripture scholar Hastings says that the confession theory must
- 18:21be undoubtedly excluded. And you know, Scott Hans talked about this a lot
- 18:25that even you know, legitimate Protestant scholars in earlier times had rejected it,
- 18:30and now they picked it back up. The German Protestant. Let's see if
- 18:36I can pronounce this guy's name. I am not good with German. Well,
- 18:40I'm just gonna spell it k U I n O E L writes.
- 18:45Those who wrongly interpreted this passage as referring to the Confession and not to Peter
- 18:49himself, would never have taken refuge in this distorted interpretation of the popes.
- 18:55If in this distorted interpretation, if the popes had not wrongly tried to claim
- 19:00it for themselves, the privilege that was given to Peter and that's another Protestant
- 19:04argument, but they go on. You see, he does not believe that
- 19:08the pope inherits Peter's privileges, but he does know that Peter was personally the
- 19:12foundation stone. We see the French rationalists rejected the historical sense of the Gospels,
- 19:19but he says that is absurd to accept that sense as Protestants, as
- 19:26do Protestants, and then violate that sense in order to avoid what they do
- 19:30not wish to admit. So you could see whether Protestants, even if they
- 19:34disagree in other matters of Catholic doctrine, or rationalists, in other words,
- 19:38an atheist who do legitimate scholarship in studying language and context and the development of
- 19:48doctrine and such over history, cannot make that claim. They have to reject
- 19:55that Protestant claim that one Peter was not the rock, two that Jesus was
- 20:00referring to himself, or that three Jesus was referring to Peter's faith, especially
- 20:07given the original language in which Jesus spoke. It's grammatically impossible. So now
- 20:15we will get to the exhaustive Catechism of the Catholic Church by Father Spirago.
- 20:19We're picking up on charity one's neighbor. Last week, last episode which I
- 20:25record at the end of last week, we talked about charity one's neighbor,
- 20:27and now we're going to talk about lack of charity to one's neighbor. He
- 20:32who does not desire the good of his neighbor, but it's envious of him,
- 20:36does not possess love of neighbor. We call a man envious who merely
- 20:41through ill will is vexed, is vexed at the prosperity of another, or
- 20:45rejoices when misfortune overtakes him. The envious man cannot bear to see the good
- 20:52fortune of another, and consequently he seeks by word and work to do him
- 20:56harm. He is like a certain kind of snake, that which is said
- 21:00to gnaw away at the root of trees which bears sweet smelling blossoms, because
- 21:04it cannot endure the perfume. Like the moth that threats frets away the purple
- 21:10robe, or the rust that can rodes iron. The envious man who rejoices
- 21:15at the misfortune of his neighbor is like the raven that gloats over corrupt and
- 21:19stinking carrion dead animals. But our vexation or pleasure may arise from the love
- 21:26of God or our neighbor, in which case is not blameworthy, e g.
- 21:30If a man is greed because one who is an enemy of the Church
- 21:33is raised to a position of influence, or because great prosperity, as tends
- 21:37a sinner who will employ his good fortune to sin all the more. Satan
- 21:41envied our first parents. In Paradise, Caane envied his brother Abel because his
- 21:47offering was acceptable to God. Genesis four or five, the sons of Jacob
- 21:51were envious of Joseph because he was their father's favorite. Genesis Side Against thirty
- 21:56seven to eight. King Sauw envied David on account of his having slain the
- 22:00Giant and being honored by the people First Kings eight eight. Many a man
- 22:07grudges another post more lucrative than his own. The height of envy is to
- 22:11grudge another the gifts of divine grace and the progress of virtue. This is
- 22:15one of the sins against the Holy Ghost. In other words, you would
- 22:18not want someone to be a saint. Actually this is more common than you
- 22:22might know. Recently, on Twitter, there's been a lot of controversy over
- 22:27a young lady who's to be a porn star, and she's renounced her past
- 22:33life and become Catholic, and all the virtuous Catholic women, I'm going to
- 22:37say all of them, good thirty percent of them are condemning her. Still
- 22:41they say she can never be saved. Okay, that's actually a sin against
- 22:47the Holy Spirit. And a lot of them have said, well, you
- 22:49know, I've looked at her site. She hasn't taken this down. It's
- 22:53not a real conversion. She's a con artist. Even if that's true,
- 23:00that's true, that's not your place to judge. You know, she's going
- 23:04to Mass, she's receiving the Eucharus. She says she's totally renounced her past
- 23:10and is writing strongly against the evils of pornography. You know, that's like
- 23:15the prodigal son who was jealous or upset that his brother came back. You
- 23:21know, it says, the angels rejoice more over the conversion of a sinner
- 23:25than the perfect life of a saint. So we got to keep that in
- 23:29mind. That's the sin against the Holy Ghost. And you know, none
- 23:33of us are perfect. But you need to be aware of that sin so
- 23:36you can confess it and change your life, because sins against the Holy Spirit
- 23:41are the most grave of sins. They are the unforgivable sins. The high
- 23:47priests were jealous of Christ when they saw that he worked many miracles, and
- 23:49therefore determined to compass his death. That was John eleven forty seven. The
- 23:55devil feels this kind of envy. The devils, he said, the demons.
- 23:59They are furious when they see the elect advancing toward perfection, and at
- 24:03once assail them with persecutions. No sin renders men. So much like the
- 24:07devil is envy. For envy is particularly the devil's sin. The envious man
- 24:12is an imitator of the devil. For and by the envy of the forour
- 24:17and by the envy of the devil, death came into the world Wisdom two
- 24:21twenty four. That's another book. The King James doesn't have the wonderful Book
- 24:25of Wisdom, the Wisdom of Solomon. Just as Christ says, by this
- 24:30shall all men know that you are My disciples, if you have love for
- 24:33one another. John thirteen thirty five. Was Solomon the Dance? I think
- 24:37it was Solomon the Dance. Yeah, I think I got that wrong.
- 24:40It doesn't matter anyway, moving on John thirteen thirty five. So on the
- 24:45other hand, the devil can say, by this, shall all men know
- 24:48that you are my followers? If you envy one another, I have envied
- 24:51you. That's a quote from Saint Vincent Farrr, one of the great thinkers
- 24:56and theologians writers of the church. The jealous and he's one that wrote a
- 25:03lot. Saint Vincent Ferrer, he wrote a lot on a book of revelation
- 25:07and Daniel in the Apocalypse really fascinating insights. The jealous man wishes to see
- 25:11nothing but misery around him. There is more malice in this sin than any
- 25:15other. For all other sins and vices, there is some pretext which a
- 25:18man may plead his excuse. The exclusive for intemperance is hunger for revenge the
- 25:25wrong one has received for theft, expringing property, etc. But for envy,
- 25:29no plea can be alleged. It is worse than open war. There
- 25:32is always a cause for war, but none for envy. Besides, when
- 25:36war is over all animasi is at an end, but with envy it is
- 25:41unending. See, envy is not necessarily desiring another person's goods, but desiring
- 25:48they not have them even if you can't have them. Kind of like being
- 25:52a liberal democrat anyway. Saint John Chrisossom said that, not about democrats,
- 25:59he said that about MVB worse war. Moreover, envy is the only evil
- 26:03quality which charity cannot overcome. One who is an enemy to you or enraged
- 26:08against you may be appeased by kindness, but the envious never. Among all
- 26:14sins, envy is the only one which affords no gratification to those and who
- 26:18indulge in it. In temperate, the avaricious, the choleric seem to gain
- 26:22something by yielding to their passions, but envious sterile. It may be compared
- 26:27to a moth, which, fluttering about the lamp, singes its own wings,
- 26:30but does not extinguish the flame, or even calls it to burn less
- 26:33brightly. Envious is most hurtful of a man. It robs him of inward
- 26:38content and bodily health. It leads him to many cruel actions, and finally
- 26:42to eternal perdition. As the worm gnaws away it wood to which it owes
- 26:48its origin, so envy eats the heart to which it gains admission. It
- 26:52harasses the mind, destroys the peace of conscience banishes gladness from the soul and
- 26:57fills it with despondency and sadness. When once it is firmly rooted within the
- 27:03soul, its presence becomes apparent outward in a pallid cheek, the hollow eyes.
- 27:07They testify the suffering it occasions. Thus we are told that Cain's countenance
- 27:12fell in Genesis four or five. When envy fixes its malevolent talons in the
- 27:18heart, tears at a man's entrails, his food, becomes distasteful to him,
- 27:23his drink no longer refreshes him. According to Saint Cyprian, envy shortens
- 27:27a man's days Ecclesiasts Ecclesiastices thirty twenty six. I believe the envious man and
- 27:37is his own executioner. As Russ corrodes iron, So envy eats into the
- 27:41soul that harbors it. It brings its own punishment for it frets away and
- 27:45destroys the individual who cherishes it. Envy leads to many acts of cruelty.
- 27:51Through envy, the earth was first stained with a brother's blood, and through
- 27:55envy the Jews delivered Christ up to death. Envy causes us to murmur against
- 27:59the arrangements of divine providence. The labor who had worked all day long the
- 28:03vineyard murmured against the master of the house through envy, when those who had
- 28:07worked only one hour received a penny Matthew twenty eleven. The envious man hates
- 28:12to see the benefits God bestows on others. Envy excludes from heaven. It
- 28:17is a sure pledge of eternal damnation. Through envy. The angels fell from
- 28:21heaven and man was driven out of paradise. If we are bound even to
- 28:25love our enemies, how great will be our punishments if we pursue with envy
- 28:30those who have never wronged us. Saint John Christ Austin, the best means
- 28:36of overcoming feelings of envy is to do all the good we possibly can to
- 28:40our fellow men in order to thrust out the monster of envy from the heart.
- 28:45No sword, no breastplate, no helmet is needed, only the panoply
- 28:48of love. Do all the good you can to the person whom you envy,
- 28:52At least pray for him that his happiness may be increased. You will
- 28:56thus banish the demon from your heart. Thereby deserve a twofold crown, the
- 29:02one for your victory over envy, and the other for the charitable deed you
- 29:04have performed. Saint John Christostom, Consider also how short lived is all here
- 29:10below. In a little while we must leave all. It would not then
- 29:14matter what have been your possessions, what high offices you afield. Your future
- 29:21happiness will be entirely dependent upon your good works. If you will be great
- 29:25here after, humble yourself. Now, love to be unknown and despised,
- 29:30for he that humbleth himself shall be exalted Luke fourteen eleven. He does not
- 29:36love his neighbor who injures him, whether in regard to his life as innocence,
- 29:40his property, his honor, or his household. Nor does he love
- 29:42his neighbor who performs no works of mercy. If thou dost not give to
- 29:47thy neighbor who is in want sufficient to support his life, says Saint John
- 29:51Christosim, thou doest not love him to give alms as a strict duty for
- 29:55those who have the means of giving them. Saint Ambrose severely censures the misely
- 30:00rich men of his day. The walls of your dwelling are hung with splendid
- 30:03tapestries while you take the clothes off the poor man's back. A beggar at
- 30:07your door asks for the most trifling alms, and you do not so much
- 30:11as vouchsafe him a glance as you pass by, debating within your mind what
- 30:15kind of marble will look best for the pavement of your palaces. A starving
- 30:19mendicant asks for a crust of bread and vain, while your horses are champing
- 30:23their golden bits. How terrible are the judgments of the rich man which you
- 30:27prepare for yourself? Who might give assistance to so many who are in want?
- 30:33The diamond you wear on your finger will alone suffice to feed a multitude.
- 30:37Saint John Christossom speaks in like manner to the wealthy who are hard hearted.
- 30:42What makes thy miserliness most reprehensible is that neither poverty nor hunger compels thee
- 30:48to it. Thy wife, thy house, I very dogs beside thy hearth
- 30:52glitter with gold, whereas the man made of for God's image, redeemed by
- 30:56the blood of Christ, is left to perish through thy inhumanity. How many
- 31:02streams of fire will be the portion of such a soul? All right,
- 31:06we will wrap it up there we have talked about lack of charity boards one
- 31:11neighbor. Tomorrow we will get into love of one's friends, which is perhaps
- 31:14a more pleasant topic. But you know, no, certainly no more important.
- 31:19We have to be charitable. That's one of the huge mistakes that Protestantism,
- 31:26based on Lutherism makes when they say faith alone is all it's necessary for
- 31:30salvation. When Jesus said faith and works. Those works are receiving the sacraments,
- 31:36worshiping him in the way that he demanded. You know, if you
- 31:38love me, you will keep my commandments. And among those commandments are love
- 31:42for God and one's neighbor and charity. You know, charity is well it
- 31:48says charity cover sins or alms cover sins. Without doing charity to one's neighbor,
- 31:56we cannot love God or neighbor. You're not following the commands of Jesus.
- 32:01So anyway, y'all remember the words of Saint Padre Pio, pray,
- 32:06hope and don't worry, and I'll talk to you next time.
