Scientists at the University of Minnesota have created “SpudCell,” the first synthetic cell built entirely from nonliving parts, capable of growing, replicating DNA, dividing, and even evolving through natural selection. Unlike prior attempts, SpudCell was assembled from scratch using defined chemicals, with a 90,000-base-pair genome that enables protein production and self-replication.
