- 0:00So January 26th, it's probably not a date that
- 0:03you have, you know, circled in red on your calendar.
- 0:06Not yet, anyway. But it's definitely one that's
- 0:08gaining importance. Right. It's the International
- 0:10Day of Clean Energy. A pretty fresh initiative
- 0:13from the U .N., actually. Co -sponsored by the
- 0:15UAE in Panama. And that's really the focus of
- 0:18our deep dive today. Exactly. We're looking at
- 0:20a very specific topic. Dubai Electricity and
- 0:23Water Authority's projects strengthen the UAE's
- 0:26leading role in the transition to clean and renewable
- 0:29energy. And transition is the key word. But it's
- 0:32a bit of an understatement here. It really is.
- 0:34The goal is massive. We're talking 100 percent
- 0:37clean power generation by 2050. And we have reports.
- 0:41here showing how Dubai is actually turning that
- 0:43vision into projects on the ground? It is an
- 0:46incredibly ambitious target, and it's a commitment
- 0:49that comes from the very top. It has to for a
- 0:51goal that big. It does. And there's an official
- 0:54statement that puts it perfectly. His Excellency,
- 0:57Saeed Mohammed Al -Tayr, emphasized that the
- 1:00UAE, under the wise leadership of His Highness
- 1:02Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al -Nayan, President
- 1:06of the UAE, and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed
- 1:08bin Rashtan Maktoumah, Vice President and Prime
- 1:11Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, is among
- 1:14the world's leading countries in this transition.
- 1:16And we saw that leadership on the world stage.
- 1:18Just recently, didn't we, with the UAE consensus
- 1:20at COPY28? Oh, absolutely. That consensus, which
- 1:23was approved at Expo City Dubai, was a real turning
- 1:26point for reducing greenhouse gas emissions globally.
- 1:29It set a new tone. It really did. And to understand
- 1:32the philosophy driving Dubai's efforts specifically,
- 1:34you really need to hear this statement from His
- 1:37Excellency Saeed Mohammed Al -Tayr, Managing
- 1:40Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water
- 1:42Authority. Okay, let's hear it. The International
- 1:45Day of Clean Energy is an annual occasion to
- 1:47renew global commitment to accelerating the transition
- 1:50to clean and renewable energy sources. On this
- 1:54day, Dubai's experience stands out as a global
- 1:57model for transforming strategic visions into
- 1:59major projects that support climate action, protect
- 2:01natural resources, and enhance energy security
- 2:04and sustainability. At Dubai Electricity and
- 2:08Water Authority, we continue to implement pioneering
- 2:10projects in line with the Dubai Clean Energy
- 2:12Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emission
- 2:16Strategy 2050 to provide 100 % of total power
- 2:20generation capacity from clean sources by 2050.
- 2:23Dubai Electricity and Water Authority's integrated
- 2:25projects reflect Dubai's innovation -driven approach,
- 2:28leveraging advanced technologies, particularly
- 2:30artificial intelligence, to enhance efficiency
- 2:32and build a resilient, clean energy ecosystem
- 2:35that supports sustainable development, improves
- 2:37quality of life, and shapes a brighter and more
- 2:39sustainable future for all. That phrase in there,
- 2:42innovation -driven approach, really is the key,
- 2:44isn't it? It's not just talk. Not at all. You
- 2:46just have to look at the Mohammed bin Rashid
- 2:48Al Maktoum Solar Park. The scale of that place
- 2:50is just... It's hard to even get your head around.
- 2:52It's the largest single -site solar park on the
- 2:55entire planet. And the numbers are staggering.
- 2:58It's already producing 3 ,860 megawatts. But
- 3:01the target is over 8 ,000 megawatts by 2030.
- 3:04That's more than double. It is. And that pushes
- 3:07the clean energy share of Dubai Electricity and
- 3:09Water Authority's install capacity from about
- 3:1221 .5 % right now. to over 36 % by 2030. And
- 3:16in terms of emissions, that's a reduction of
- 3:18over 8 .5 million tons a year. But, you know,
- 3:21the classic question with solar is always the
- 3:23same. What do you do when the sun goes down?
- 3:25The renewable hurdle. Right. And that's where
- 3:27this gets really interesting to me. They're not
- 3:29just building panels. They're building a massive
- 3:311 ,400 megawatt battery storage system. Which
- 3:34is huge and absolutely necessary. But if you
- 3:37want to talk about true storage innovation, we
- 3:39have to talk about the HADA hydroelectric plant.
- 3:42This is my favorite part of the research. A hydro
- 3:44plant in the desert. It sounds like a contradiction.
- 3:47It does, doesn't it? But the engineering is just
- 3:49brilliant. It's the Gulf region's first pump
- 3:52storage hydroelectric plant. So it's essentially
- 3:54a giant gravity battery. That's the perfect way
- 3:57to describe it. They use excess solar power during
- 3:59the day to pump water up to a higher reservoir.
- 4:02And when they need power at night or during a
- 4:04peak, they just let it flow back down through
- 4:07the turbines. Exactly. Storing 1 ,500 megawatt
- 4:09hours of energy. And the best part. It has an
- 4:1280 -year lifespan. That's immense grid resilience.
- 4:16And they aren't stopping there. They're also
- 4:17looking to the future with the Green Hydrogen
- 4:19Project. That's right. The region's first solar
- 4:22-powered green hydrogen project. And just so
- 4:24everyone's clear, green hydrogen means it's made
- 4:27using renewable energy to split water, not fossil
- 4:31fuels. Correct. It's the cleanest form. They're
- 4:34producing about 400 kilograms daily right now.
- 4:36It's a pilot project, but it's a vital testbed
- 4:39for transport and industrial uses down the line.
- 4:42So you've got this incredible comprehensive strategy.
- 4:44You have the massive solar park for generation,
- 4:47the hydro and battery for storage, the hydrogen
- 4:51for future proofing. And then you have initiatives
- 4:53like Shem's Dubai, which allows individual building
- 4:56owners to connect their own solar panels to the
- 4:58grid. It connects the whole system from the citywide
- 5:02scale down to a single building. It does. Dubai
- 5:05Electricity and Water Authority is using artificial
- 5:07intelligence and all these advanced technologies
- 5:09to build a resilient ecosystem, not just generating
- 5:14power, but managing it intelligently. It really
- 5:17sets a benchmark, doesn't it? If you can successfully
- 5:19integrate solar, hydro and hydrogen storage in
- 5:22a desert environment. It proves that it can be
- 5:25done anywhere. It shows that energy security
- 5:27and sustainability, they really are achievable
- 5:29with the right vision and investment. Something
- 5:32for all of us to think about. That's all we have
- 5:34for this deep dive. Thanks for listening.
