- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:11through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:15the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:19Welcome back to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 0:21Welcome back to the studio. It's a Friday and people are
- 0:25having the time of their lives at our office, so I'm really
- 0:29sorry if you can hear hear people like laughing and talking
- 0:31in the background. I was waiting for hopefully
- 0:35people to start being quiet. But honestly, I think it's just
- 0:37the Friday vibe. I've never really recorded on a
- 0:39Friday before, I don't think, at least not in a very long time,
- 0:41and the vibes are very different.
- 0:43So I apologize. But I'm happy to be back in
- 0:47studio. I had a really good time at
- 0:49sunrise at the festival the last couple of days.
- 0:52I did so many different talks, I met so many cool people.
- 0:55My presentation, it went well. I was quite nervous.
- 0:59I've had really good feedback since then, Although I did have
- 1:02like a low key traumatic experience.
- 1:05A man immediately, immediately after I stepped off the stage,
- 1:08like literally stepped off the stage and a man, of course, a
- 1:11man came over to me and just starts unloading feedback for
- 1:15quote UN quote next time at me. Like literally talked at me for
- 1:18five straight minutes about everything he thought I did
- 1:20wrong in my presentation. As you can imagine, after doing
- 1:24probably the biggest presentation of your entire
- 1:26career, stepping off the stage after a moment like that and
- 1:29immediately being hit with this unsolicited, quote UN quote
- 1:33advice framed as like, oh, just for next time, here's some like
- 1:37friendly, you know, tips. That was a little hard to
- 1:40grapple with. I did leave the festival crying
- 1:43on the first day after that happened.
- 1:45It was rough. I won't go into like the full
- 1:47story because I'm trying to honestly like forget about it,
- 1:49but I was like classic, of course, Like I'm a young female
- 1:52founder on that stage talking about the highs and lows.
- 1:56And the second I get off, some man comes up to me and thinks he
- 2:00knows better and let me say he does not know better.
- 2:02This was not like a venture capitalist, This was not a
- 2:04founder. This was just a random man.
- 2:07Anyways, as you can tell, that really rubbed me the wrong way.
- 2:10But let's just move on. OK?
- 2:11Let's get into the stories for today.
- 2:13The first story that I have for you guys today is I'm going to
- 2:15cover the James Charles, Kayla Malik and Evan Johnson
- 2:19situation. So Kayla Malik has taken to
- 2:22social media to share her experience of being in an
- 2:25abusive relationship. And now James Charles is
- 2:28involved. Big trigger warning.
- 2:30We're going to be discussing topics around domestic violence
- 2:33and abuse, so listener discretion is advised.
- 2:36As always, there are time stamps if you do not want to hear the
- 2:39story. So Kayla Malik is a popular Tik
- 2:41toker. She started posting regularly on
- 2:43the platform in 2019. A lot of people would know Kayla
- 2:47from her transformation videos where she collaborated with
- 2:50beauty influencers. In 2023, she created videos with
- 2:53influencers like Meredith Duxbury, Michaela Naguera, and
- 2:57ironically, James Charles, and they would all do her makeup.
- 3:00The other key player in this is Evan Johnson.
- 3:02There there's honestly not that much information about him out
- 3:05there, but many publications have described him as a 20 year
- 3:08old influencer. According to one of his ex best
- 3:11friends, who we will talk about later, he frequently posted on
- 3:14Snapchat and was in the creator fund for the platform.
- 3:16Kayla and Evan were in a relationship for about 9 months
- 3:19through 2024 and 2025. The first time Kayla really went
- 3:23into the details of her relationship with Evan in a
- 3:26meaningful way was in a YouTube video posted on April 4th titled
- 3:29He Doesn't Love You at Part 1. The second part was posted on
- 3:32April 10th, 10th. Together.
- 3:34The videos were around 4 hours long.
- 3:36She also posted to her TikTok, sharing a series of tearful
- 3:39videos speaking to her experience.
- 3:42These videos were organized around specific dates that were
- 3:45significant to her, whether Evan was harming her, getting
- 3:48violent, or even as Kayla says, trying to kill her.
- 3:51She also shared very confronting videos of her injuries and her
- 3:54reaction after certain incidents.
- 3:57I don't want to get into the specifics of the violence, but I
- 3:59will read the notes app statement that Kayla posted
- 4:02before she started sharing her story quote.
- 4:04For the past nine months, I was in an extremely abusive
- 4:07relationship. I will never be able to forget
- 4:09the scars left. I will never be the same girl I
- 4:12was before this. The same man who will look you
- 4:14in the eyes today and say I love you and then attempt to kill you
- 4:17is an experience I hope nobody ever has to live to be scared of
- 4:21the person you sleep next to. Permanent scars, physically and
- 4:24mentally. I was silently being abused
- 4:26while posting my life online. Smiling.
- 4:28It's true, you can see it in the eyes.
- 4:30I watch my old videos and see someone I never want to see
- 4:34again. It drained my soul and ripped
- 4:36apart the strong nature of myself I've had my entire life.
- 4:39I can't put into words the abuse and what it did to me.
- 4:42I asked the universe everyday why me and I came to the
- 4:46conclusion this happened to me to save others.
- 4:49If I saw this video nine months ago it would have saved my life.
- 4:52I was put through this so I can save you.
- 4:54Filming this video was the hardest thing I've ever had to
- 4:56do. When you watch these videos, if
- 4:58you relate to anything, leave. He doesn't love you.
- 5:01This is not only my story but yours.
- 5:04So Evan was arrested for domestic assault and probation
- 5:07violations on April 7th. His assault of Kayla is on the
- 5:11system and his hearing is on May 7th.
- 5:14As reported by PEOPLE, Quote, influencer Evan Johnson was
- 5:17arrested in Sumner County, Tennessee on a charge of
- 5:20domestic assault and a violation of his probation.
- 5:23On Monday, April 7th. PEOPLE confirmed with the Sumner
- 5:26County Sheriff's Office that Johnson was arrested and later
- 5:29released on bail on the same day.
- 5:31Police did not identify the victim, so now it is being
- 5:34alleged that James Charles, who at the time was friends with
- 5:38Kayla, let Evan stay at his house for a week after he and
- 5:41Kayla broke up. James was reportedly aware of
- 5:44Evan's behavior but apparently let him stay at his house to
- 5:46support him as he had been through cancellations online
- 5:50before. Online friends of all parties,
- 5:52including Evan and Kayla's, are alleging that James and Evan
- 5:55have been seeing each other romantically.
- 5:58Kayla hasn't addressed the allegations in detail, but
- 6:00yesterday she did post a clip from her podcast with Jacob
- 6:03Sartorius called Banging Out to Her TikTok where she spoke about
- 6:07how a close friend of hers had betrayed her.
- 6:10One user commented James Charles where Kayla went on to like that
- 6:14comment. This has sent speculation into
- 6:17OverDrive. OK, so I wanted to make it clear
- 6:19before I continue. Obviously James has had tons of
- 6:23condemnable behavior in his past, but so much of the
- 6:27discourse online has been focused on like the quote UN
- 6:30quote like drama between James and Kayla.
- 6:33So many people are failing to hold the main perpetrator Evan
- 6:36to account and they are minimizing the severity of the
- 6:40situation by kind of diminishing it down to drama.
- 6:44Now many influencers and people in Kayla and Evan's lives have
- 6:47come forward to share what they know about the situation related
- 6:50to Evan, Kayla, and James. Many of them have gone on to
- 6:53validate Kayla's story and expressed support for her in
- 6:56this extremely difficult time, most recently in a 55 minute
- 7:00episode for the Be Better YouTube channel.
- 7:03I know, I know, Be Better. How he has swindled his way into
- 7:09this, I don't know. Zach Sellers, who is apparently
- 7:12the ex best friend of Evan, shared his perspective on the
- 7:15situation. In the interview, Zach details
- 7:18his past friendship with Evan, explains the abusive behavior
- 7:21from Evan and explains that allegedly he is aware of the
- 7:24romantic relationship between James and Evan.
- 7:27But again, be better named the podcast episode the downfall of
- 7:31James Charles. And that's not to say that that
- 7:33is not an important part of the story and an important thing to
- 7:36look at when we're considering like, you know, having James
- 7:39Charles in the the online zeitgeist.
- 7:41But in general, like having this huge interview with someone who
- 7:45was close to the perpetrator and framing it as like, oh, we're
- 7:49going to take James Charles down, I think is missing the
- 7:52mark. But aside from be Better,
- 7:54Kayla's best friend Brennan has made a fair few Tik Toks about
- 7:57the situation. The most impactful videos have
- 8:00probably been Brennan talking about an incident at a party
- 8:03where Evan became extremely protective over Kayla, accusing
- 8:06Brennan of wanting to sleep with Kayla even though he is a gay
- 8:09man and Evan also apparently got violent with him.
- 8:12He went on to share screenshots of messages about the incident
- 8:15that also included text describing his violent behavior
- 8:18toward Kayla. He also spoke about a situation
- 8:20in Hawaii where he was getting physical with Kayla and getting
- 8:23verbally abusive. Brennan also shared voice
- 8:26messages in the video. Other creators have spoken out
- 8:28as well, including Michaela Testa.
- 8:30Trisha and Oscar also spoke about it on the Just Trish
- 8:33podcast and on a clip posted on the Spill the Tea With Me
- 8:38TikTok, where Trisha and Oscar are discussing the alleged
- 8:40affair between James and Evan, Kayla's sister Ashley commented
- 8:44Quote. All I'm saying is it's not a
- 8:46lie. I honestly don't recommend
- 8:48looking up any of the content related to this.
- 8:50It's really, really triggering. But yes, obviously justice for
- 8:56Kayla. I am really, really hoping that
- 8:59on May 7th, you know, she gets some justice.
- 9:03But that is, that's the situation for now.
- 9:05OK. The next story that I have for
- 9:06you guys is that Hulu is making a documentary about Alex Cooper.
- 9:11Hulu will be releasing a documentary in June about the
- 9:14life and career of podcast queen Alex Cooper called Call her
- 9:18Alex. Actually really like that name
- 9:20from The Hollywood Reporter quote.
- 9:22The two-part doc follows Cooper as she prepares for her first
- 9:25tour supporting her call her Daddy podcast and traces her
- 9:29life from a childhood in Pennsylvania to influential
- 9:32media figure. So the show will be produced by
- 9:35the Unwell Network and it will air on Hulu.
- 9:38And I honestly don't know if I will ever get over the fact that
- 9:41we are calling the network unwell and we are using that
- 9:45with our full chest, like dead seriously when we are talking
- 9:49about these business deals. I remember when she named the
- 9:52network, she announced the network and she announced the
- 9:55name and everyone was like, what the actual hell?
- 9:57Like that's the worst name ever. I mean, it doesn't seem to have
- 10:01held them back at all. I still think the name is unwell
- 10:06and I love the word unwell. I say unwell all the time.
- 10:09Actually when I left my last job before Centennial to start
- 10:13Centennial in 2019. When you work in women's media,
- 10:17at least here in Australia, a lot of the times when you're
- 10:20like leaving magazines or digital publishers, your
- 10:22colleagues will make like a custom like magazine cover like
- 10:25of you with headlines that are like relevant to you.
- 10:28So my friends made me a custom like digital homepage of the
- 10:32website that I worked for with like stories related to me in my
- 10:36pictures and stuff. And one of them was like, I've
- 10:38been unwell for 28 years because I was 28 when I left.
- 10:41And I said unwell all the time. And all of my friends at work
- 10:44that that was so funny. And I was not even really a call
- 10:46her daddy listener at all. But I just, I do love that word,
- 10:49but like, it's not the right word for a business like this.
- 10:53I actually think they will probably end up changing the
- 10:55name down the line. Yeah, this is a huge deal.
- 10:58Like, honestly, good for Alex. I think it's really interesting,
- 11:01at least for me, to like, keep track of what's going on in her
- 11:04career and the movements that she's making.
- 11:07I saw Shannon from Fluently Forward say that she is like
- 11:10everything Logan Paul does, like Alex Cooper does next.
- 11:15And I was like, I've never thought of it like that, but
- 11:16it's actually so true. It's such a funny, like, pop
- 11:19culture conspiracy theory. OK The next story that I have
- 11:22for you guys is that The Ordinary has put the business of
- 11:25celebrity endorsements on full display.
- 11:29The ordinaries latest pop up activation has taken a swipe at
- 11:31the cost of celebrity endorsements in the beauty space
- 11:35to quote shed light on the true cost of fame when it comes to
- 11:38skin care marketing. The activation was called the
- 11:41secret ingredient pop up and it was basically like an empty
- 11:44storefront just filled with this giant pile of money like a pile
- 11:49of dollar bills quote with some celebrity endorsements raising
- 11:53product prices by 30 to 100% or more and some a list stars
- 11:58charging up to $10 million for a single post.
- 12:01The ordinary is creating a storefront that offers an
- 12:04artistic visual representation of what those inflated prices
- 12:07could cost consumers money that would otherwise be spent on high
- 12:11quality ingredients and scientific research, not
- 12:14celebrity hype. So this activation has really
- 12:17popped off on brand and advertising like TikTok and
- 12:20LinkedIn. I saw this one post on LinkedIn
- 12:23talk about how not only did it expose how much money some of
- 12:26our favorite brands could be like quote, UN quote, like
- 12:28wasting on these endorsements, which obviously comes out of our
- 12:31pockets at some point down the line.
- 12:35But the activation also drove home how strong Desi M's brand
- 12:38message has always been and how they've been able to build this
- 12:41like cult following this cult brand, a hugely successful brand
- 12:45without these markups, without these celebrity endorsements and
- 12:48just like solid formulas that work.
- 12:50I think it's interesting how, I mean, there's less transparency
- 12:54in celebrity endorsements and sponsorships and then there is
- 12:59an influencer marketing. But I think it's interesting
- 13:02because we so, so, so rarely hear any criticism around the
- 13:08price tag of a celebrity endorsement.
- 13:10But we are constantly ragging on influencers for charging so much
- 13:13to brands. And now, like with this
- 13:16activation, I think that's probably part of it, you know,
- 13:19is seeing like $10 million for a single post from a celebrity.
- 13:24No one is ever worth that money. And the return on investment, I
- 13:29don't know if it would be the same anymore, I imagine.
- 13:31But I know, you know, back in the day, back in the day, a huge
- 13:35reason why a lot of brands moved more heavily towards influencer
- 13:39marketing was even with celebrity endorsements, like you
- 13:41don't make your money back. It's like an alignment and like
- 13:44APR moment. It's not that kind of like spend
- 13:47money, make money immediately the same way that influencer
- 13:50marketing used to be. We talked very briefly about
- 13:53that in the Clutch interview from yesterday.
- 13:55So if you guys haven't listened to that, go and listen.
- 13:57There's time stamps if you want to just like get to their
- 13:59interview. But yeah, they were saying,
- 14:01like, being quoted like $75,000 from a single influencer and
- 14:05making like, nothing back. And it's like, yeah, but think
- 14:07about this with celebrities, like $10 million for one pose.
- 14:12No, the last story that I have is a quick one, but Piper Raquel
- 14:16has broken her silence on the abuse allegations against her
- 14:19mother Tiffany, following the Netflix documentary that we
- 14:22talked about, I think it was 2 weeks ago.
- 14:24So Piper did an interview with the Rolling Stone off the back
- 14:29of kind of the backlash of this docu series that came out about
- 14:32the Piper Squad and being child influencer and, you know, kind
- 14:36of exposing what her mother has allegedly put her through and a
- 14:40lot of her friends through. So she told Rolling Stone that
- 14:43her former Piper Squad members are, quote, stretching the truth
- 14:47about her encounters with her mother and her mother's
- 14:49boyfriend. Quote, they're not making it up,
- 14:52but they're extending the truth. I was there.
- 14:55I witnessed everyday. I think that they believe what
- 14:57they are saying. But I was there and I saw
- 14:59everything. You know, where I live.
- 15:02Come get me. If you want to save me, If you
- 15:05want to, quote, save Piper, stop talking, please.
- 15:08Because by hurting my mother, you're hurting a part of me.
- 15:10I mean, I'm not surprised that this is her response.
- 15:14I am not surprised that she's defending her mother.
- 15:17She's still a teenager. I can't even imagine how much
- 15:22reconciling she is going to need to do, how much therapy and
- 15:27inner work and distance from all of this.
- 15:30She's going to need to properly deal with what has happened to
- 15:34her childhood. But the fact that her mother cuz
- 15:37she's still a minor. So I imagine for things like
- 15:40interviews like her mother has to sign off still.
- 15:42Like I cannot believe just how toxic this all is.
- 15:47Like her mother presumably signing off for her to do this
- 15:50interview with Rolling Stone so that she can defend her.
- 15:53Like it's all so disgusting and it's not surprising, but it's
- 15:57so, so disgusting. I really just hope that brands
- 16:02stop spending with child influencers and on child
- 16:06accounts and child channels. Like there should be no
- 16:08sponsorships for children on YouTube, just like full stop.
- 16:13I actually got asked about that in my presentation.
- 16:16Somebody said, you know, when Gen.
- 16:19Z ages out, like is your brand going to stay a Gen.
- 16:22Z media brand? Are you going to be youth
- 16:23culture? And for me, it's more about the
- 16:26fact that like Internet culture aligns with youth culture.
- 16:29It's always going to align with youth culture, but especially
- 16:33now because there's just this interesting place in time,
- 16:37right? Where like millennials were kind
- 16:39of the last generation that didn't like grow up like fully
- 16:43online in the way that like Gen. Zed has, we've indirectly become
- 16:47quite a Gen. Zed focused brand with a Gen.
- 16:50Zed audience. But like our true roots are like
- 16:54the creator economy, Internet culture, and that's always going
- 16:57to be the focus of our brand. It's not like, oh, we're trying
- 16:59to reach this generation. It's like, this is what we cover
- 17:02and like, so this is who we're reaching.
- 17:04But I said like we do every once in a while, touch on Gen.
- 17:08Alpha. But I'm never going to create
- 17:10content intentionally for children.
- 17:12Like I am not trying to market to children because if I'm
- 17:15creating content that is relevant to Gen.
- 17:17Alpha, that means that on YouTube they're getting ads from
- 17:21our videos, right? Or any of the sponsorships, like
- 17:24they're hearing a sponsorship for a brand like they're
- 17:27children. I'm not in the business of
- 17:29advertising to kids. So yeah, that's how I feel about
- 17:33all of this. Anyways, guys, thank you for
- 17:36listening to Mini Scroll. I'm sorry that a couple of these
- 17:38stories were really heavy, but I thought they're important to
- 17:40talk about. They're important to keep
- 17:42addressing. I love you guys.
- 17:44Thank you so much for listening. Please rate, review and
- 17:46subscribe. Please subscribe to us on
- 17:48YouTube. We're still trying to get to
- 17:4910,000 subscribers. We're almost there.
- 17:51I know I say that every day, but we are almost there.
- 17:54I love you guys and I will talk to you on Monday.
- 17:57Bye.
