- 0:00Speaker 1: I think of like going through rehab.
- 0:01Speaker 2: I think of like getting better getting back to pitching,
- 0:03Speaker 2: But I also think of like growth.
- 0:05Speaker 1: I want to evolve. I want to get better in
- 0:07Speaker 1: a lot of.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Different things, because we all know it's like a year
- 0:10Speaker 2: long rehab and twelve months are going to go by
- 0:13Speaker 2: whether I do it right or do it wrong.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Twelve months are going to go by.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Whether my only focus is rehabbing and pitching, or whether,
- 0:19Speaker 2: like I still try to grow in a lot of things.
- 0:21Speaker 2: So might as well take advantage of the time saying yeah,
- 0:24Speaker 2: like getting back to pitching is my north star, Like, oh,
- 0:27Speaker 2: that's a priority. I want to get back to pitching.
- 0:29Speaker 2: I want to come back better than ever. But I
- 0:30Speaker 2: also don't want twelve months to go by where like
- 0:33Speaker 2: where time go? Or like what else did I do
- 0:35Speaker 2: with my time? What else did I do with my
- 0:37Speaker 2: twelve months?
- 0:38Speaker 3: So that was the voice of Pablo Lopez, and this
- 0:42Speaker 3: is Twin Cities Territory or Minnesota Twins podcast on the
- 0:47Speaker 3: Foul Territory Network. Lopez, of course the Twins opening day
- 0:51Speaker 3: starter each of the past three seasons, and probably would
- 0:53Speaker 3: have been again this year if not for a torn
- 0:56Speaker 3: ucl and his throwing elbow suffered very early on in
- 1:00Speaker 3: spring training. Lopez is now out for this season rehabbing
- 1:03Speaker 3: that injury, and he joined Dan Hayes, the Athletics, Minnesota
- 1:07Speaker 3: Twins beat writer and me Zach Pierce, also of the
- 1:09Speaker 3: Athletic this week to talk about his rehab, talk a
- 1:12Speaker 3: little bit about his many side quests as he calls
- 1:15Speaker 3: them with the team this year, including serving as an
- 1:18Speaker 3: interpreter for some of the Spanish speaking players. Also gave
- 1:21Speaker 3: us a little preview of some broadcasting work he has
- 1:23Speaker 3: coming up. We also discussed his mindset over this twelve
- 1:27Speaker 3: month recovery process, and also how it feels sitting on
- 1:31Speaker 3: the sidelines as the Twins starting rotation navigates a tricky
- 1:35Speaker 3: year full of injuries across the board, but still being
- 1:38Speaker 3: one of the team's strengths this year. So we'll get
- 1:40Speaker 3: to that interview in just a second. After that, we'll
- 1:43Speaker 3: talk about the Twins series opening lost to the Royals
- 1:46Speaker 3: on Thursday, dropped pop ups and all. We'll talk about
- 1:49Speaker 3: Mick Able's latest sign of progress coming back from his injury,
- 1:52Speaker 3: and also why Bailey ober is mad at a wet baseball.
- 1:56Speaker 3: All that coming up, but first, our great interview with
- 1:58Speaker 3: Pablo Lopez. Enjoy. All right, welcome back to the show.
- 2:03Speaker 3: Pablo Lopez is here, Twins starting Pitcher joins us. Where
- 2:08Speaker 3: are you right now?
- 2:09Speaker 4: Pablo? Are you in Minnesota?
- 2:11Speaker 1: This is Target Field right now?
- 2:13Speaker 4: You're at Target.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:14Speaker 2: I just got done working out, just got done in
- 2:16Speaker 2: the training room. I'm probably still sweating after my workout,
- 2:19Speaker 2: but wanted to fit this in.
- 2:21Speaker 1: So thank you guys for having me.
- 2:23Speaker 3: Well, thank you for thank thank you for being here.
- 2:25Speaker 3: Yeah for sure. First of all, how are things going,
- 2:28Speaker 3: how's rehab? How's everything looking?
- 2:30Speaker 2: Everything's looking great. I've been hitting all of my marks
- 2:34Speaker 2: right now. Yesterday was Wednesday, so it was fourteen weeks.
- 2:39Speaker 2: We're fast approaching to the seventeen week mark, which after surgery,
- 2:44Speaker 2: it's a pretty symbolic mark because then I'm going to
- 2:47Speaker 2: start doing two handed like pliometrics, so like with met balls,
- 2:51Speaker 2: doing two handed throws, soccer throws, all kinds of things.
- 2:53Speaker 1: So it's the first step. We we're introducing a.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Little bit of laid back to the elbow to the ligament,
- 2:59Speaker 2: couple throws, like a little a little bit of those motions.
- 3:02Speaker 1: So everything's been feeling really well.
- 3:04Speaker 2: Everything leading up to that point is just strengthening, building
- 3:09Speaker 2: capacity and the conditioning aspect of it, the mobility, you know,
- 3:13Speaker 2: reshaping my whole body. So like you know, once you
- 3:16Speaker 2: hear your lowest point, you.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Just open to the biggest change.
- 3:18Speaker 2: So like you know, let me just break myself down
- 3:21Speaker 2: to pieces and then just put it together even better
- 3:23Speaker 2: than it was before. So just taking advantage of the time,
- 3:27Speaker 2: you know, like obviously I was giving all this time
- 3:29Speaker 2: to work out and work on myself without thinking that
- 3:32Speaker 2: I'm going to be tired to pitch, so might as
- 3:34Speaker 2: well just do the best that I can.
- 3:36Speaker 5: And that's where the truly fascinating part of this is
- 3:39Speaker 5: is last week, Zach, We're in Chicago at a rate field,
- 3:43Speaker 5: Twins are playing the White Sox and it's about, I
- 3:46Speaker 5: don't know, the second inning and or right before the game,
- 3:49Speaker 5: and you see Pablo heading into the bullpen and this
- 3:53Speaker 5: is you know, usually that happens about forty minutes before
- 3:56Speaker 5: game and going out and getting a start, and this
- 3:58Speaker 5: was an entirely different thing. Pablo was shadowing Anderson Dale Rosa,
- 4:01Speaker 5: the Twins bullpen catcher. You have also acted as the
- 4:06Speaker 5: interpreter for the team at times, because it's funny the
- 4:11Speaker 5: Twins started the season and they had no players that
- 4:13Speaker 5: actually needed Spanish interpretation at the time. Since Kendriy Rojas
- 4:18Speaker 5: and Joan Deroscomes have joined the club and they need interpreters.
- 4:25Speaker 5: But you've done those two roles so far. But what
- 4:27Speaker 5: else have you been doing, like sort of unique stuff
- 4:30Speaker 5: that you'd never done before? And why like why did
- 4:32Speaker 5: you want to shadow the bullpen catcher for a day?
- 4:36Speaker 2: Well, I mean a lot of it is just to
- 4:38Speaker 2: occupy my time, but also like you know, like I
- 4:40Speaker 2: told all job because she asked me the same thing.
- 4:42Speaker 2: I'm calling these like side quests, So like I'm finding
- 4:46Speaker 2: these little activities that otherwise I probably wouldn't do if
- 4:49Speaker 2: I'm active, when I'm active on the roaster, so might
- 4:51Speaker 2: as well just.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Branch out learn.
- 4:55Speaker 2: A few things or just to keep myself like BC
- 4:59Speaker 2: or engage in areas, you know, like the world of rehab,
- 5:02Speaker 2: especially a long one becomes very like routine oriented and
- 5:05Speaker 2: you do the same thing over and over. So this
- 5:08Speaker 2: is just like it gives me like a little bit
- 5:10Speaker 2: opportunity to take a step back and then like enjoy
- 5:14Speaker 2: or like be grateful for a lot of things but
- 5:16Speaker 2: also like it takes it puts into perspective all of
- 5:18Speaker 2: the work that a lot of people do, you know.
- 5:20Speaker 2: I shadowed Pete McKie and I got to see firsthand
- 5:23Speaker 2: how he goes about his reports, the preparation, how much
- 5:27Speaker 2: you know, how much time before the game, before the
- 5:29Speaker 2: series he spends giving us the best information. With Anderson
- 5:35Speaker 2: de la Ross, our booping catch and one of my
- 5:36Speaker 2: really good friends. I just wanted to see the dynamic
- 5:39Speaker 2: of the bullpens, which I thought it was super cool.
- 5:41Speaker 2: I got to be in the bullpen a few times
- 5:43Speaker 2: in the minor leagues or my first big Leak spring training,
- 5:46Speaker 2: and the Boopen is just a different It's a different vibe,
- 5:49Speaker 2: It's a different danamage.
- 5:50Speaker 1: At least in the minor leagues.
- 5:51Speaker 2: It was a lawless place because there's not even a
- 5:53Speaker 2: boopend coach in the minor leagues. It was just like
- 5:55Speaker 2: the oldest guy in the bullpen was like the bullpen coach,
- 5:58Speaker 2: but it was just a lawless kind of uh. And
- 6:01Speaker 2: it's a lot of fun to vibes are different, so
- 6:03Speaker 2: that was really cool to see. Whenever, like the phone rang,
- 6:06Speaker 2: how everyone just shifted their focus to the phone and
- 6:09Speaker 2: like Troy Hawkins are voting coach and then whoever name
- 6:13Speaker 2: they are the team wanted to get hot. You know,
- 6:15Speaker 2: like the demeanor, the attitude, the face completely changed because
- 6:19Speaker 2: it's go time.
- 6:20Speaker 1: It's game time for them.
- 6:22Speaker 2: But you know, like I also started doing like the
- 6:25Speaker 2: the Moment segment for twin CV and that I did
- 6:27Speaker 2: it with Andrew Morris and Connor Prilly, So a little
- 6:31Speaker 2: bit of that too, a little bit of TV time,
- 6:33Speaker 2: you know, learn from the best from all during how
- 6:36Speaker 2: she goes about her business. So I was all for
- 6:38Speaker 2: giving that a shot and translating it's been fun. I
- 6:41Speaker 2: love it, or interpreting, sorry you tell me it's interpreting.
- 6:46Speaker 2: Interpreting has been fun. And I mean it's hard. It's
- 6:49Speaker 2: hard to talk to the media. It's hard to say
- 6:52Speaker 2: things on live TV. So if I'm if I'm able
- 6:55Speaker 2: to provide some help for the guys that are you know,
- 6:58Speaker 2: wanting to wanted to like say, say a few things
- 7:00Speaker 2: here and there, you know, like by all means, and
- 7:03Speaker 2: again it's another side quest that I get to do.
- 7:05Speaker 2: And next month and and I joined Corey up in
- 7:08Speaker 2: the booth. So we gave down on a shut last
- 7:11Speaker 2: year for only one game, and I think it's gonna
- 7:14Speaker 2: be way more than one game this year, which I'm
- 7:17Speaker 2: all foreign, and just I've been in the I've been
- 7:22Speaker 2: able to be in a couple of the hitters meetings
- 7:24Speaker 2: before they prepare for the game. So I've been in
- 7:26Speaker 2: the room for a few of those, and see how
- 7:28Speaker 2: you know, same thing, how many numbers the hitting coaches
- 7:31Speaker 2: pull up to provide the hitters with the most precise
- 7:34Speaker 2: concise information, tendencies, patterns of the guys they will be facing.
- 7:39Speaker 1: So sitting in a few of.
- 7:41Speaker 2: Those just brought me a lot of perspective of like, oh,
- 7:43Speaker 2: like this is this could be how other teams prepare
- 7:46Speaker 2: when I'm about to pitch, you know, like the numbers
- 7:48Speaker 2: the day that they throw out there.
- 7:49Speaker 1: So that was also pretty eye opening for me.
- 7:52Speaker 5: With with interpreting, like how old were you when you
- 7:55Speaker 5: felt comfortable giving your own first English interview? Like was
- 8:00Speaker 5: that something that was natural to you or was that
- 8:02Speaker 5: something did you use interpreters early in your career too?
- 8:05Speaker 2: No, I never used an interpreter, and I just I
- 8:09Speaker 2: enjoy public speaking. It doesn't really finds me or anything
- 8:15Speaker 2: like I'm able to I mean in school, I used
- 8:17Speaker 2: to give ton tons of presentations or projects and all
- 8:21Speaker 2: of that, and my dad used to tell me, you know,
- 8:23Speaker 2: it's all about projecting yourself with confidence, you know, like
- 8:27Speaker 2: and the cool thing about confidence, no one knows if
- 8:29Speaker 2: it's real or fake. So just be eloquent, say things
- 8:33Speaker 2: in a low manner, you know, sound confidence, pronounce your words,
- 8:37Speaker 2: enunciate your words. So my first English interview, I think
- 8:41Speaker 2: it was in twenty sixteen. I was going through a
- 8:43Speaker 2: really good strength in low Way, the Clinton lumber Kings,
- 8:46Speaker 2: and then one of the local newspapers wanted me for
- 8:50Speaker 2: like an interview, so that was my first one, and
- 8:53Speaker 2: then getting called up to the big leagues in twenty eighteen.
- 8:55Speaker 2: The same day I got called up, that was the
- 8:57Speaker 2: first time that I had like a camera in front
- 8:58Speaker 2: of me and like another cup big writers going on.
- 9:01Speaker 2: But I was able to you know, I was able
- 9:04Speaker 2: to say the things I wanted to say and give
- 9:07Speaker 2: the message I was trying to give. So, you know, thankfully,
- 9:13Speaker 2: I don't want to say it's easy, because nothing.
- 9:14Speaker 1: Really is easy.
- 9:15Speaker 2: But I was able to find a good grounding when
- 9:18Speaker 2: it came to you know, talking to the media or
- 9:20Speaker 2: live TV or things like that.
- 9:23Speaker 5: Did you did you the first had you interpreted before
- 9:26Speaker 5: this for anybody besides you know, these guys.
- 9:30Speaker 1: In the minor leagues.
- 9:31Speaker 2: I would alone, like when I was in the low levels,
- 9:33Speaker 2: probably like rookie ball low way a little bit. If
- 9:36Speaker 2: no one in our coaching staff was Spanish speaking and
- 9:40Speaker 2: they wanted to like give a message to the group
- 9:42Speaker 2: or someone specific, I would like interpret like you know,
- 9:45Speaker 2: the coaching directions or like if it was just to
- 9:48Speaker 2: a specific group.
- 9:49Speaker 1: I would do that.
- 9:50Speaker 2: During extended spring training back in twenty fifteen, I did
- 9:53Speaker 2: it a couple of times, but it was just because
- 9:55Speaker 2: I knew I spoke the language and I did it.
- 9:57Speaker 2: So yeah, I did some interpreting when like no one
- 10:00Speaker 2: else in the room could do it. You know, obviously
- 10:03Speaker 2: these year is the first time that I'm doing it.
- 10:04Speaker 2: We're like, okay, something that's going to be printed on
- 10:07Speaker 2: paper or where someone's gonna actually like use like that
- 10:10Speaker 2: for like an article or something.
- 10:11Speaker 1: But I've been enjoying it so far.
- 10:13Speaker 5: I was gonna say one thing that stands out, and
- 10:15Speaker 5: you can always tell when someone's new at it is
- 10:18Speaker 5: you do it in first person. So if Kendrick Rojas
- 10:20Speaker 5: says something, you're speaking as him, and you can see
- 10:23Speaker 5: it when guys do it for the first time and
- 10:25Speaker 5: they're not used to it. They'll do it in third
- 10:26Speaker 5: person and say he's saying this, and it's like no,
- 10:30Speaker 5: but we need you to pretend like you're him.
- 10:31Speaker 4: This is it's so.
- 10:32Speaker 5: Funny, how that how much that means to An interview in.
- 10:37Speaker 6: This episode is brought to you by FanDuel Baseball Fans.

- 11:35Speaker 5: Okay, anyways, aside from that, so look, this is something
- 11:38Speaker 5: clearly that you are doing. This would not be something
- 11:42Speaker 5: that you would be doing unless you wanted to. What
- 11:44Speaker 5: is this What are all these side quests doing for
- 11:48Speaker 5: you during this period because obviously, you know, obviously the
- 11:51Speaker 5: rehab side of things is is very there's a lot
- 11:55Speaker 5: of work going on there. But like, what is this
- 11:57Speaker 5: giving you during this kind of down period where you're
- 12:00Speaker 5: not because you are traveling with the team and you
- 12:02Speaker 5: are around the guys, So, like, what's that kind of providing.
- 12:05Speaker 4: To you while you're going through this.
- 12:08Speaker 1: It's just it's bringing me a lot of perspective.
- 12:10Speaker 2: It's bringing me a lot of appreciation for what everyone
- 12:13Speaker 2: does around me. It brings me a lot of like
- 12:15Speaker 2: admiration because you know, like it's the big leaks whoever,
- 12:18Speaker 2: it's at this level, it's the best or the alite.
- 12:20Speaker 1: Of what we do.
- 12:21Speaker 2: So it just brings a lot of appreciation for that.
- 12:23Speaker 2: It brings me a lot of perspective. And it's also
- 12:26Speaker 2: like when I think of like going through rehab, I
- 12:29Speaker 2: think of like getting better getting back to pitching, but
- 12:31Speaker 2: I also think of like growth.
- 12:33Speaker 1: I want to evolve.
- 12:34Speaker 2: I want to get better in a lot of different things,
- 12:36Speaker 2: because we all know it's like a year long rehab
- 12:39Speaker 2: and twelve months are going to go by whether I
- 12:42Speaker 2: do it right or do it wrong. Twelve months are
- 12:44Speaker 2: going to go by whether my only focus is rehabbing
- 12:46Speaker 2: and pitching, or whether like I still try to grow
- 12:49Speaker 2: and a lot of things. So might as well take
- 12:50Speaker 2: advantage of the time saying yeah, like getting back to
- 12:53Speaker 2: pitching is my my north star, Like, oh, that's a priority.
- 12:56Speaker 1: I want to get back to pitching. I want to
- 12:57Speaker 1: come back better.
- 12:58Speaker 2: Than ever, But I also don't want to wants to
- 13:00Speaker 2: go by where like where time go or like what
- 13:03Speaker 2: else did I do with my time? What else did
- 13:04Speaker 2: I do with my twelve months? So this is just
- 13:07Speaker 2: like a way of like staying engaged with you know,
- 13:11Speaker 2: things that I want to learn, things that I may
- 13:13Speaker 2: want to do in the future, or just like different
- 13:15Speaker 2: ways to support like the team, not just the players,
- 13:18Speaker 2: but everyone else around us, and being with the team
- 13:21Speaker 2: also provides me with a lot of like saying in
- 13:23Speaker 2: the present moment, in the present moment, not getting too
- 13:26Speaker 2: ahead of myself, not getting two down if I'm feeling
- 13:29Speaker 2: you know, like you know, like through rehab you have
- 13:31Speaker 2: those really down days where like the routines like catching
- 13:34Speaker 2: up to you or like you have a realization mom
- 13:37Speaker 2: where like okay, like I'm three months out of surgery,
- 13:40Speaker 2: it's still nine more months. So like staying with the group,
- 13:43Speaker 2: saying in these environments like okay, but like it keeps
- 13:45Speaker 2: me looking forward. This is the environment I want to
- 13:48Speaker 2: get back to. This is where I belong to.
- 13:49Speaker 1: This where I'm going.
- 13:50Speaker 2: I'm going to be next year, if and if I'm
- 13:52Speaker 2: going to be here next year, let me do it
- 13:54Speaker 2: with being a better version of myself.
- 13:56Speaker 5: Oh it's cool, that's really cool, Pablo.
- 13:59Speaker 3: Your injury was a brutal blow, obviously for a team
- 14:02Speaker 3: that was expecting starting pitching to be a strength. It
- 14:06Speaker 3: still has been a strength, even though most of the
- 14:09Speaker 3: staff has endured some kind of injuries. But I'm sure
- 14:12Speaker 3: it's hard to sit there and watch it, But has
- 14:13Speaker 3: it been inspiring in some ways to watch the starting
- 14:16Speaker 3: rotation still fight through it. And be one of the
- 14:18Speaker 3: positives of the team this year.
- 14:20Speaker 1: Yeah, one hundred percent.
- 14:21Speaker 2: It's always inspiring to see the starting pitcher, the starting
- 14:24Speaker 2: pitchers like picking up where they left up, where there's
- 14:29Speaker 2: like with what they're working on. You know a lot
- 14:31Speaker 2: of these young guys in spring training they were working
- 14:33Speaker 2: in some things and you know, when you're young, you're like, okay,
- 14:36Speaker 2: like I have time to work on this because I'm
- 14:38Speaker 2: probably not gonna make the team right away. And then
- 14:40Speaker 2: like things happen, injuries are ever pressent. They're always going
- 14:44Speaker 2: to show well but unexpected times, and then like to
- 14:47Speaker 2: see these guys coming up and then still pick up
- 14:50Speaker 2: where they left over where like they're performing, they're having
- 14:53Speaker 2: good results while working or doing the things that we're
- 14:56Speaker 2: supposed to get better.
- 14:57Speaker 1: And you know, like Connorpe with the curve.
- 14:59Speaker 2: Ball, it's a new and he's getting a lot of
- 15:01Speaker 2: like swing and miss with it, at Tash with the splitter,
- 15:04Speaker 2: throwing it more. And so it's like really cool to
- 15:06Speaker 2: see these guys feel inspired and confident enough to show
- 15:10Speaker 2: up and then fill up whatever shoes they have to
- 15:12Speaker 2: feel or like help out in any way they can.
- 15:14Speaker 1: And just do their things.
- 15:16Speaker 2: So It's really inspired from a starting pictures picture perspective,
- 15:20Speaker 2: because you know, like I get to un fortunate enough
- 15:23Speaker 2: that I get to be in the dog out to
- 15:24Speaker 2: watch them perform, and then I watch them throw their
- 15:26Speaker 2: boopings when my when my time works out and I'm
- 15:28Speaker 2: able to go out there and like I like to
- 15:30Speaker 2: like watch a few of those here and there with
- 15:32Speaker 2: the home on the road. But start, you can never
- 15:35Speaker 2: have enough starting pitching pitching in We've been challenged, we've
- 15:39Speaker 2: been tested by having to you know, call someone up
- 15:42Speaker 2: that it's is happy to get that opportunity and he's
- 15:47Speaker 2: happy to like bring us like a lot of good
- 15:49Speaker 2: quality inning.
- 15:50Speaker 1: So it's been really fun to see that from from
- 15:52Speaker 1: the dog Out.
- 15:54Speaker 5: Well, hey, look, I know you've got another meeting come
- 15:57Speaker 5: up here, so we'll let you go, but I want
- 15:58Speaker 5: to ask before you go, any other interesting side quests
- 16:02Speaker 5: planned coming up here? Anything you want to dive into,
- 16:05Speaker 5: maybe like check out the beer sales during the game,
- 16:08Speaker 5: or you know, do something around the stadium.
- 16:12Speaker 2: Well, one day I want to I want to shadow
- 16:14Speaker 2: Mitch hest which was kind enough to borrow me his
- 16:17Speaker 2: desk right now to for this interview. So he's going
- 16:19Speaker 2: to be the next one, even though last year when
- 16:21Speaker 2: he had me in the press books he told me
- 16:23Speaker 2: good and cheer, which was shocking for me. But maybe
- 16:26Speaker 2: one day I'll I'll be sitting next to him during
- 16:28Speaker 2: the game.
- 16:29Speaker 5: That's that's awesome. I know fans loved when you were
- 16:32Speaker 5: in the booth last year, so I'm sure that'll be
- 16:35Speaker 5: something they look forward to here in the next couple
- 16:37Speaker 5: of months. But thank you so much for the time,
- 16:39Speaker 5: and we really thank you appreciate You're our first guest
- 16:43Speaker 5: on Twin Cities territory, so thank you take for us.
- 16:47Speaker 3: But all right, that was our interview with Pablo. The
- 16:52Speaker 3: first thing I should point out is that you are
- 16:54Speaker 3: correct in and thank you for for educating the players.
- 16:58Speaker 3: That interpreter refers to somebody who works with the spoken
- 17:02Speaker 3: word and translator is written text, so very well done.
- 17:05Speaker 3: But that's that's my big takeaway from the interview.
- 17:08Speaker 5: I learned that an angry emailer years ago told me
- 17:12Speaker 5: about it, and I have taken it ever since. I
- 17:16Speaker 5: think it was when Jose Bray you when I covered him,
- 17:18Speaker 5: and he used an interpreter, not a translator. So I
- 17:21Speaker 5: passed it along to Pablo because I thought he'd like
- 17:24Speaker 5: to know that, because he is the kind of guy
- 17:26Speaker 5: who actually would like to know that kind of information.
- 17:29Speaker 5: But yeah, I wish we could have like like had
- 17:32Speaker 5: some advertisements leading up to this, so we could say
- 17:35Speaker 5: a very special episode of Twin Cities Live, whatever the
- 17:40Speaker 5: hell that is.
- 17:40Speaker 4: The more you know, rainbow going across them?
- 17:43Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, you know, like it felt like this was
- 17:45Speaker 5: a PSA, like how injured players. Actually he's a unicorn.
- 17:50Speaker 5: There's no way, you know, what he's doing is so unique.
- 17:52Speaker 5: It's it's just why I wanted to talk him into
- 17:55Speaker 5: coming on and tell him about it, because it's not
- 17:56Speaker 5: a lot of guys do something like this.
- 17:58Speaker 3: It was super interesting just hear you know, his philosophy
- 18:01Speaker 3: about like the clip I started the show with the
- 18:04Speaker 3: you know like it's going to be twelve months, is
- 18:06Speaker 3: going to be twelve months. Might as well make the
- 18:07Speaker 3: most of it, like you don't want to look at
- 18:09Speaker 3: like where did the time go? And you know it's
- 18:12Speaker 3: it's smart, like and was that breaking news that he's
- 18:14Speaker 3: going to be back on the Twins broadcast next month?
- 18:17Speaker 4: Do we think or do we do?
- 18:18Speaker 5: No? No, no, no, no, that's I think I think that's.
- 18:20Speaker 3: Out there okay, but yeah, but yeah, he's thinking about,
- 18:24Speaker 3: you know, broadening himself and preparing for whatever's next whenever
- 18:27Speaker 3: baseball's done, hopefully not for a long time, but it
- 18:31Speaker 3: was it was good to hear that he, I mean,
- 18:33Speaker 3: is feeling good about his progress and hitting all his
- 18:35Speaker 3: markers as he said, for sure too.
- 18:38Speaker 5: Yeah, you know, it's funny that he's always a curious dude,
- 18:41Speaker 5: like it's probably helped him in pitching, probably helps him
- 18:44Speaker 5: in life. And it's just fascinating to hear people who
- 18:48Speaker 5: have kind of advanced behind processes like that talk about it,
- 18:52Speaker 5: because you just not a lot of people do that.
- 18:55Speaker 5: They would just be glum and I got twelve months?
- 18:57Speaker 5: What am I going to do? How am I gonna
- 18:58Speaker 5: fill this time? And privately he has said that it
- 19:01Speaker 5: will get harder when he is close, when he feels
- 19:05Speaker 5: starts to feel real good and he's like, why am
- 19:07Speaker 5: I not throwing that? And that comes up in the
- 19:09Speaker 5: next month or two. I believe he said work because
- 19:12Speaker 5: he has to wait till twenty four weeks at least.
- 19:14Speaker 5: I think he has to wait till August twelfth for
- 19:17Speaker 5: the next the MRI, and then at that point he
- 19:20Speaker 5: can he's hoping that it's there that he gets to
- 19:23Speaker 5: start throwing around mid August, but it might be a
- 19:26Speaker 5: little bit longer and you so it's going to be
- 19:29Speaker 5: an interesting summer for him, and him being around the
- 19:31Speaker 5: team is probably a really good thing for his psyche.
- 19:36Speaker 4: Well good for his psyche.
- 19:39Speaker 3: Didn't help a whole lot last night, A sloppy did
- 19:43Speaker 3: not I don't blame I don't blame you, Pablo, but
- 19:46Speaker 3: sloppy loss to the Royals as the Twins lose the
- 19:48Speaker 3: opener of a four game set with k C. They're
- 19:51Speaker 3: twenty nine and thirty five now. Two more errors, including
- 19:55Speaker 3: one that looked like me in my softball game last night,
- 19:58Speaker 3: with a pop up that that fell at a bad time.
- 20:01Speaker 3: But then it was.
- 20:04Speaker 4: A rain delay.
- 20:04Speaker 3: It was a bullpen game, just a disjointed effort all around.
- 20:09Speaker 5: It seemed like great way for my eleventh straight day
- 20:13Speaker 5: to end. I was pumped for that rain delay last night.
- 20:16Speaker 3: Well, right, that's another point. It's the thirteenth straight day
- 20:20Speaker 3: with the game for the team, so.
- 20:22Speaker 5: It was the fourteenth for them, and I actually think
- 20:24Speaker 5: that might've been like, it wouldn't shock me if that's
- 20:27Speaker 5: playing into some of the sloppiness. Fourteenth straight days without
- 20:30Speaker 5: a break. Who knows, but there have been five hours
- 20:33Speaker 5: at shortstop this week on the home stand, three on Wednesday.
- 20:37Speaker 5: In that game, we were trying to describe it and
- 20:40Speaker 5: get past as briefly as possible on our last show,
- 20:43Speaker 5: but it's just too sloppy. And the six walks. Last
- 20:47Speaker 5: night we saw Justin Lawrence come in in a tight
- 20:51Speaker 5: spot after Taylor Rodgers give two hits and walk the
- 20:54Speaker 5: first batter. The problem as the one thing that really
- 20:57Speaker 5: does add up when you give those outs away. When
- 21:00Speaker 5: you extend the lineup, pitching matchups go away like teams
- 21:05Speaker 5: see those favorable runs of hey, let's get our left
- 21:09Speaker 5: end for these four batters, and by the time a
- 21:12Speaker 5: walker and like, it pushes those matchups, the favorable matchups
- 21:17Speaker 5: out of the way and you then are scrambling. And
- 21:19Speaker 5: in a game like that where you use Andrew Morris
- 21:22Speaker 5: to start the game, and typically and Morris would pitch
- 21:25Speaker 5: later in a game when you use him and you're
- 21:29Speaker 5: then you're forced to go to some other guys. But like,
- 21:31Speaker 5: I got why they wanted to use him to start.
- 21:33Speaker 5: He's been electric and he throws a hundred. He's it's
- 21:38Speaker 5: just I'm sorry.
- 21:39Speaker 4: I'm sorry.
- 21:39Speaker 3: I'm just noticing the feet in the background.
- 21:43Speaker 4: Is that our friend? Is that a friend Tom back there? Yes?
- 21:47Speaker 5: That apparently that is a that's our landlord's feet in
- 21:50Speaker 5: the background of the photo.
- 21:51Speaker 3: I did not for those watching on YouTube, there's there's
- 21:54Speaker 3: a pair of feet chilling on the couch behind in.
- 21:56Speaker 4: But uh, for those for those who are I apologize,
- 22:00Speaker 4: that is hilarious.
- 22:01Speaker 5: Well, you know you usually think for like, I'm always
- 22:04Speaker 5: worried the cats in the background at home and here
- 22:07Speaker 5: apparently it's a feat.
- 22:09Speaker 3: Someone always wants to make a cameo Tyler's kid, my kid,
- 22:12Speaker 3: your landlord's feet, your cats, Like someone's always trying to
- 22:15Speaker 3: get in on the show.
- 22:17Speaker 5: That's amazing. But no, so you know, I look the
- 22:21Speaker 5: point Shelton made afterwards, and Shelton was very critical. It
- 22:23Speaker 5: was very brief postgame session. It's like a fifty eight
- 22:27Speaker 5: second postgame session. Last night, he was he came in
- 22:30Speaker 5: and he was like, sloppy, We're just way too sloppy.
- 22:33Speaker 5: This was terrible, can't give away out, can't walk the batters.
- 22:36Speaker 5: And his point was that it just it you lose
- 22:40Speaker 5: your your ability to match up the way you want to.
- 22:44Speaker 5: And I'm sure that kind of put them in the
- 22:46Speaker 5: spot they had to use Taylor Rodgers late last night.
- 22:48Speaker 5: Taylor Rodgers they would prefer to use in the spot
- 22:50Speaker 5: where there's more lefties and not good righty hitters like
- 22:54Speaker 5: he's struggled.
- 22:55Speaker 4: With that a little bit.
- 22:56Speaker 5: We saw him come in and man, Kansas City was
- 22:58Speaker 5: able to line up its bench in that ninth inning rally.
- 23:02Speaker 4: You saw it.
- 23:03Speaker 5: They pinch it either three or four guys, and there's
- 23:05Speaker 5: a pinch runner two. So they emptied the bench and
- 23:08Speaker 5: they put together the winning rally was enough when you
- 23:10Speaker 5: have two mediocre teams and actually Kansas City is terrible
- 23:14Speaker 5: and the Twins are playing you know, mediocre would be
- 23:17Speaker 5: a nice thing for them right now because that they
- 23:21Speaker 5: just it's it's been a sloppy stretch here, one in
- 23:24Speaker 5: six after Boston on that road trip and two and
- 23:27Speaker 5: two so far, and you know this is we talked
- 23:30Speaker 5: about their today. They need to be playing better and
- 23:32Speaker 5: and uh, when we have a chance against teams that
- 23:35Speaker 5: were like Kansas City Detroit three.
- 23:38Speaker 3: More games against Kansas City are now one in three
- 23:42Speaker 3: against the Royals, I believe this season. Yeah, after the
- 23:44Speaker 3: that that series way back in the first week of
- 23:47Speaker 3: the year. They took one of of the three in
- 23:50Speaker 3: Kansas City, Zebi Matthews against Michael Waka Friday night, that's tonight.
- 23:55Speaker 3: Saturday afternoon game is Joe Ryan against l Winder Avila,
- 23:59Speaker 3: and Sunday afternoon the finale Connor pre Lip and Noah Cameron.
- 24:06Speaker 3: Zebie Matthews and Connor Prelip, of course two of the
- 24:11Speaker 3: two of the starters who have kind of been forced
- 24:13Speaker 3: into the mix given the injuries across the board. Basically
- 24:16Speaker 3: all of the Twins opening rotation starters have experienced some
- 24:20Speaker 3: injuries this year. But some good news perhaps Dan on
- 24:24Speaker 3: the injury front, as Mick Abel was spotted throwing off
- 24:27Speaker 3: the mound at Target Field yesterday.
- 24:30Speaker 5: Yeah, Mickabel, He's last pitched April fourteenth, so we're getting
- 24:36Speaker 5: pretty far down the road. He went on the aisle
- 24:39Speaker 5: tip like I guess technically he went on the aisle
- 24:42Speaker 5: April seventeenth with right elbow inflammation. At one point. He
- 24:45Speaker 5: had a little bit of a setback in early May
- 24:47Speaker 5: when he was thrown in the bullpen. He had some
- 24:50Speaker 5: tricep soreness and got court zone shot. But for him yesterday.
- 24:55Speaker 5: He is at the point where he threw thirty seven
- 24:57Speaker 5: pitches off the mound. He faced live hitters, he hit
- 25:00Speaker 5: ninety seven. He was throwing his off speed. He looked good.
- 25:03Speaker 5: He described it as free and easy. He's pretty excited.
- 25:06Speaker 5: Twins have to be two. The telltale will be Friday
- 25:09Speaker 5: afternoon when he gets in and does he feel good.
- 25:12Speaker 5: And if he feels good, then he gets a light
- 25:15Speaker 5: bullpen session in between, and then they'll determine what's next
- 25:18Speaker 5: for him, Like do they on do they take him
- 25:21Speaker 5: with him to Detroit and he gets another live batting
- 25:24Speaker 5: practice against his teammates before a game, or does he
- 25:27Speaker 5: potentially go to the minor leagues and make a rehab start.
- 25:31Speaker 5: You know, two, three innings, slowly building up, so the
- 25:34Speaker 5: process is getting there for him. You know, it's to
- 25:38Speaker 5: get to five innings to get to the pitch count.
- 25:41Speaker 5: It's still another fifteen twenty days. You know, it's probably
- 25:46Speaker 5: if everything went great, it's probably twenty ish days before
- 25:50Speaker 5: we see him the majors. Maybe they bring him back
- 25:53Speaker 5: early because he could throw four innings. Maybe, like maybe
- 25:56Speaker 5: with the way the state of the pitching staff, they
- 25:59Speaker 5: would they're going to take their time, no matter what.
- 26:03Speaker 5: They want to care for this guy. They think he
- 26:05Speaker 5: can be a star. So but it's a great sign
- 26:08Speaker 5: for them no matter what, even if, you know, even
- 26:11Speaker 5: if they felt comfortable going two three innings and then
- 26:13Speaker 5: slowly building up. I mean, there's a way to do
- 26:16Speaker 5: it. It just depends on how desperate they are. But they'll
- 26:19Speaker 5: they'll take their time for a little while here. He's
- 26:22Speaker 5: too valuable. We saw it. Thirteen innings in his last
- 26:25Speaker 5: two starts, no runs, sixteen strikeouts. The goods are there,
- 26:29Speaker 5: the fastball is there, the off speed command is good.
- 26:33Speaker 5: Getting mckabel back, and I mentioned in my story today,
- 26:36Speaker 5: Kendrick Rojas also has started, like resumed playing catch, and
- 26:40Speaker 5: he has been down a shorter period with his left
- 26:43Speaker 5: elbow inflammation. He got some kind of treatment anti inflammatory
- 26:47Speaker 5: and reacted very well to that too, So I think
- 26:50Speaker 5: he will. We might see him before we see Mike Abel,
- 26:54Speaker 5: because Kendrick Rojas was going forty five sixty pitches, and
- 26:59Speaker 5: you know that's easier to build back up to, especially
- 27:02Speaker 5: since the timedown isn't nearly as long as able.
- 27:04Speaker 4: So good signs.
- 27:05Speaker 5: The Twins need both those guys and get them in
- 27:07Speaker 5: the mix again.
- 27:09Speaker 3: Yeah, Mickabel twenty four years old, his second year in
- 27:12Speaker 3: the BIGS, and it was he made four starts. The
- 27:15Speaker 3: first two were very different than the last two. Dan,
- 27:18Speaker 3: you mentioned the thirteen and hes scoreless in his last two,
- 27:20Speaker 3: which is why the twins are so and fans too
- 27:24Speaker 3: are excited to get him back and see what he
- 27:26Speaker 3: can do. But the first two outings are pretty rocky,
- 27:28Speaker 3: but he certainly turned it around the last two, so
- 27:31Speaker 3: that would be some welcome relief. Although despite what I
- 27:35Speaker 3: wrote down, there still a little bit of a ways
- 27:38Speaker 3: away before we see mckabel pitching at.
- 27:40Speaker 4: Least a full game again.
- 27:41Speaker 3: But it's certainly a good point that if they think
- 27:44Speaker 3: he's healthy enough to go and could use him in
- 27:47Speaker 3: some sort of capacity given the state of the pitching staff,
- 27:51Speaker 3: we'll see. I have to ask you about this one
- 27:55Speaker 3: as well. Dan Bailey over also hurts Adam to the
- 28:00Speaker 3: list recently filed a formal complaint over the state of
- 28:05Speaker 3: the baseballs in Boston the.
- 28:08Speaker 4: Day he got hurt.
- 28:09Speaker 3: It was it was a it was a rainy day,
- 28:12Speaker 3: the balls were obviously slick, and what exactly is he
- 28:16Speaker 3: saying did or didn't happen?
- 28:18Speaker 4: As I put my.
- 28:23Speaker 5: Okay. Bailey Ober and Derek Shelton filed complaints, Shelton with
- 28:28Speaker 5: the league, over with the PA Players Association, and basically
- 28:33Speaker 5: it was that Boston didn't rub up the base balls
- 28:36Speaker 5: with the mud before the game, like every game. That's
- 28:40Speaker 5: the idea is to make the ball so it's not slick,
- 28:44Speaker 5: so that they pitchers can grip it and have better control,
- 28:48Speaker 5: you know, command the pitches where they want to, and
- 28:50Speaker 5: not put batter's lives in danger. Well, Bailey said it
- 28:54Speaker 5: there day. He told me and Bobby Nightingale the Start
- 28:57Speaker 5: Tribute two days ago that he'd filed a complaint. And
- 29:03Speaker 5: the gist of it is that that day, the Sunday,
- 29:07Speaker 5: I don't know if you remember, it was kind of rainy.
- 29:09Speaker 5: There was a chance they weren't even going to play.
- 29:11Speaker 5: He thinks they just forgot to do it. But what
- 29:14Speaker 5: happens is when you can't grip the ball, it goes everywhere.
- 29:17Speaker 5: And he said, you have to grip it extra tight,
- 29:19Speaker 5: and he thinks that's what led to his flip flexor strain.
- 29:24Speaker 5: He's shut down right now, ten to fourteen days. You know,
- 29:29Speaker 5: it's definitely possible, and Bailey Over is not the guy
- 29:31Speaker 5: that kind of does this stuff. He's the guy that
- 29:34Speaker 5: pitched last year through hip discomfort and need discomfort to
- 29:38Speaker 5: his detriment all of June and got a nine ERA
- 29:41Speaker 5: in June they had one of the worst months in
- 29:44Speaker 5: Major League history, and made no excuses for himself. So
- 29:47Speaker 5: when I think when I hear this, you know, I
- 29:50Speaker 5: it's it's definitely something that Register says, wait what when
- 29:55Speaker 5: you hear it? But also, like when you know the
- 29:57Speaker 5: track record, it doesn't you know, he's not the kind
- 30:01Speaker 5: of guy that brings stuff up lightly. And I know
- 30:03Speaker 5: that before he registered the complaint, he talked to Sonny Gray,
- 30:07Speaker 5: former twin. Sonny pitch for the Red Sox that day.
- 30:09Speaker 5: Sonny was generally speaking about the conditions that day, and
- 30:13Speaker 5: in his interview, I think he said brutal four to
- 30:16Speaker 5: six times in the same sentence or two. And you know,
- 30:21Speaker 5: like I said, Bailey signed. Bailey decided to go forward
- 30:24Speaker 5: with the complaint once he heard Sonny kind of agree
- 30:28Speaker 5: with him on the ball.
- 30:28Speaker 3: So seven times seven times the quote is brutal, brutal, brutal,
- 30:34Speaker 3: absolutely brutal. It was brutal for everyone. It was brutal
- 30:37Speaker 3: for everyone, but it was brutal.
- 30:41Speaker 4: Sonny was a brutal I think, so, yeah, I.
- 30:45Speaker 5: Know, I know it's it's it's interesting people are going
- 30:48Speaker 5: to say making excuses, but I think when you when
- 30:51Speaker 5: you look at who the guy is, Bailey does not
- 30:55Speaker 5: strike me as someone that makes excuses. And he's pissed
- 30:58Speaker 5: and and you know, I think like he's upset that
- 31:03Speaker 5: he was having a good season that's been a little
- 31:05Speaker 5: bit derailed. And you know, if there's some credence to it,
- 31:08Speaker 5: I get why you speak up, but there's not anything
- 31:10Speaker 5: that really can be Like I think it's just get
- 31:13Speaker 5: it out there because I don't think there's anything that
- 31:15Speaker 5: could be done. Like it's not like they're gonna take
- 31:18Speaker 5: the guy that rubs up the baseballs and let players
- 31:22Speaker 5: throw a ball at him, or you know, there's what
- 31:25Speaker 5: kind of I don't know what the punishment is, do
- 31:27Speaker 5: you know what I mean? Like, I'm not.
- 31:27Speaker 3: Sure you can't uninjure him.
- 31:30Speaker 4: So that's really.
- 31:31Speaker 5: Right, and you don't find someone it if it happened
- 31:35Speaker 5: that way that they think it did, you know that
- 31:37Speaker 5: they just forgot because the game was starting. Who knows, man,
- 31:42Speaker 5: It's it's filed under away under a weird baseball story.
- 31:46Speaker 3: A weird baseball story for sure, which you can read
- 31:48Speaker 3: about along with uh, I don't know why the screen
- 31:51Speaker 3: went black behind this, but that's fine. You can read
- 31:54Speaker 3: about mick Abel, you read about Bailey over the twins
