- 2:30So we say it now. You are Lord.
- 2:33Jesus is Lord, Jesus is Lord. Jesus is Lord.
- 2:47Over my life I choose him today, Lord, come and get your glory
- 2:56and send your powerful and precious beautiful name that I
- 3:00pray, Amen. Let's start in verse one.
- 3:12And then Jacob went on his journey and came into the land
- 3:15of the people of the east. So Jacob here he left Beth El.
- 3:20He'd gone on to Haran and God has given him expedient journey,
- 3:30He has given him all of the provision to make it this 900
- 3:35mile journey. And here you're going to find
- 3:38out that God has a lesson for Jacob to learn. 2 And he looked,
- 3:47and he beheld the well in the field, and lo, there were three
- 3:50flocks of sheep lying by it. For out of that well they
- 3:53watered the flocks, and a great stone was upon the well's mouth.
- 3:58So here water was a commodity. Water was scarce in that land.
- 4:05And so they would put this heavy stone upon the top of the well,
- 4:11and there would be shepherds out in the field, and they would
- 4:15have to wait for somebody to move the stone from off the top
- 4:19of the well, so that they could water their sheep. 3 And they
- 4:23were all the flocks gathered, and they rolled the stone from
- 4:27the well's mouth, and watered the sheep, and put the stone
- 4:31again upon the well's mouth in his place.
- 4:35For And Jacob said unto them, My brothers, who are you?
- 4:40And they said of Haran, we are so here.
- 4:45These shepherds were out in the field.
- 4:48And Jacob wants to know, who do you belong to?
- 4:52Whose family are you? They said, We are of the family
- 4:55of Haram. He did not know that he was
- 4:59already in Haram 5 And he said unto them, Do you know Laban the
- 5:03son of Nahor? And they said, We know him, so
- 5:07he had got to the right place. God had given him the right
- 5:11direction, and he protected him all along the way. 6 And he and
- 5:19he said to them, is he well? And they said, yeah, he's well.
- 5:23And behold, Rachel his daughter comes with the sheep.
- 5:26So Rachel was approaching and the shepherds here wanted Jacob
- 5:31to know you're asking about Laban.
- 5:33Well here comes his daughter 7 And he said, lo it is yet high
- 5:43day, neither is it time that the cattle should be gathered
- 5:47together, water the sheep and go and feed them.
- 5:53So he's saying OK, Rachel is coming and approaching, why
- 5:59don't y'all go and do something? And they said, we cannot until
- 6:07all the flocks be gathered together, until they roll the
- 6:10stone from the well's mouth. Then we water the sheep.
- 6:14So these shepherds had to wait for someone to come and roll the
- 6:19stone away from this well so that they could water the sheep.
- 6:23What an amazing connection, friend, that the stone was
- 6:26rolled away, and God tells us to water his sheep.
- 6:30He tells us to feed the flock. He tells us to feed his lambs,
- 6:36friends, and we drink from the living water, and it never runs
- 6:40dry. 9 And while he yet spoke with them, Rachel came with her
- 6:46father's sheep, for she kept them. 10 And it came to pass,
- 6:50when Jacob saw Rachel, the daughter of Laban his mother's
- 6:54brother, and the sheep of Laban, his mother's brother, that Jacob
- 6:58went near and rolled the stone from the well's mouth, and
- 7:01watered the flock of Laban, his mother's brother.
- 7:05So here he's showing out, he's showing off, He wants to show
- 7:09Rachel his big muscles, and he rolls the stone away.
- 7:13He doesn't wait for another to come. 11 And Jacob kissed Rachel
- 7:20and lifted up his voice and wept.
- 7:22So we can see that he is overcome with all kinds of
- 7:26emotions. He is falling in love.
- 7:29He is desirous of her. He is glad to be done with this
- 7:35journey. He's glad that God gave him
- 7:39enough provision to make it this far.
- 7:42There's so much emotion wrapped up in this one little verse. 12
- 7:48And Jacob told Rachel that he was her father's brother and he
- 7:54was Rebecca's son, and she ran and told her father so she would
- 7:59have known about her aunt. That went off with Eliazar when
- 8:05he came to find a wife for Isaac.
- 8:09Rebecca was Laban's sister, and here Laban had a daughter.
- 8:18And you can see that this is a family affair.
- 8:22And this was exciting to little Rachel. 13 And it came to pass
- 8:35when Laban heard the tidings of Jacob, his sister's son, that he
- 8:39ran to meet him and embraced him and kissed him and brought him
- 8:42to his house. And he told Laban all these
- 8:44things. So you got to watch out for old
- 8:48Uncle Laban. He's got tricks up his sleeve.
- 8:51Let's see what he's going to do. 14 And Laban said to him, Surely
- 8:56you are a bone of are my bone in my flesh.
- 9:00And he abode with him the space of a month.
- 9:04So for a whole month he was shown hospitality. 15 And Laban
- 9:09said to Jacob, Because you are my brother, should you therefore
- 9:13serve me for nothing? Tell me, what shall your wages
- 9:16be? So here he's roping them in.
- 9:20He says, oh, don't work for free.
- 9:23But who said anything about work?
- 9:26Jacob's a plain man. He probably was not accustomed
- 9:34to this hard work. And Laban, here he ropes him in,
- 9:40and with smooth, clever deception gets him to serve him.
- 9:4916 And Laban had two daughters. The name of the elder was Leah,
- 9:53and the name of the younger was Rachel. 17 Leah was tender eyed,
- 9:58but Rachel was beautiful and well favored.
- 10:01So perhaps old Leah had weak eyes.
- 10:05Perhaps Leah was just not as bubbly.
- 10:10Perhaps she was not as personable, perhaps she was
- 10:19somewhat dull in comparison to the beauty of Rachel. 18 And
- 10:32Jacob loved Rachel and said, I will serve you 7 years for
- 10:36Rachel, your younger daughter. So besides room and board, this
- 10:41is all that he wanted. He wanted to be able to marry
- 10:44the younger sister, Rachel first 19, Laban said.
- 10:50It is better that I give her to you than I should give her to
- 10:54another man. Abide with me.
- 10:56Notice he says nothing about Leah.
- 10:58He says nothing here about how things are done in the custom of
- 11:02the day and the older needs to be married before the younger.
- 11:06He ropes them in 20 and Jacob served seven years for Rachel,
- 11:12and it seemed like him but a few days for the love he had for
- 11:16her. So when you're in love, friends,
- 11:19your feet lift off the ground and time and space mean nothing.
- 11:23And you were so infatuated that he worked diligently.
- 11:28And when the seven years was up, it was as if it was just
- 11:31yesterday that he started, and there would have been strict
- 11:35guidelines to keep unmarried males and females apart from
- 11:39each other during this time. So he was very much looking
- 11:44forward to his wedding and to being betrothed. 21 And Jacob
- 11:52said to Laban, Give me my wife, for my days are fulfilled, that
- 11:58I may go in unto her. 22 And Laban gathered together all the
- 12:02men of the place, and he made a feast.
- 12:06And it came to pass in the evening that he took Leah his
- 12:10daughter, and brought her to him, and he went in unto her.
- 12:14So the customs of the day is that she would have been veiled
- 12:18the entire day. And the first time that the veil
- 12:22was to be taken off is on the night where they would
- 12:26consummate their marriage. So this was deception on Laban's
- 12:31part. 24 And Laban gave his daughter Leah Zilpah, his maid
- 12:37for a handmaiden. 25 And it came to pass that in the morning,
- 12:41behold, it was Leah. And he said to Laban, What is
- 12:48this that you have done to me? Did I not serve with you for
- 12:54Rachel? Why then have you beguiled me?
- 12:58Look at how the deceiver got deceived.
- 13:03He needed to learn a lesson friend, and God sure allowed him
- 13:09to learn it. 26 And Laban say it must not be so done in our
- 13:15country to give the younger before the first born look at
- 13:19Laban trying to cover his tracks and justify what he has done. 27
- 13:26fulfill her week. And we'll give you this also for
- 13:30the service which you shall serve with me yet seven other
- 13:35years. So he says, go on your little
- 13:38honeymoon with Leah and come back and work for me for another
- 13:41seven years and then I'll give you Rachel.
- 13:46Oh Laban, this con artist 28 and Jacob did so and he fulfilled
- 13:54her weak and gave him Rachel, his daughter to wife also.
- 13:58So he finally got what he was after.
- 14:01He finally got oh Rachel that he was in love with.
- 14:04But now he has bag and tow Oh Leah back there.
- 14:10And she would have known that she was not truly loved.
- 14:13She would have known that she was not the favorite.
- 14:16She would have known that the only reason that she was married
- 14:19to him is because her dad tricked him.
- 14:22And there would have been some contention here and some
- 14:25division here, friends. 29 And Laban gave to Rachel his
- 14:32daughter Bilhah, his handmaid, to be her maid. 30 And he went
- 14:36in also unto Rachel, And he loved also Rachel more than
- 14:40Leah, and served with him yet seven other years. 31 And when
- 14:45the Lord saw that Leah was hated, he opened her womb, but
- 14:49Rachel was barren. Look at how God is so loving and
- 14:54so kind to the broken hearted. He's near to them, friends.
- 14:58He sees this terrible situation and he closes the womb of the
- 15:04one that is loved, and he opens the womb of the one that is
- 15:09hated, friends, and despised. And look at how God will always
- 15:15have his way. You cannot put him in a box.
- 15:19And don't try to call him in the courtroom.
- 15:21Don't try to approach God from a moralistic approach.
- 15:25Friends, God does whatever he pleases. 32 And Leah conceived
- 15:33and bore a son, and she called his name Reuben.
- 15:36For she said, Surely the Lord has looked upon my affliction
- 15:40now, therefore my husband will love me.
- 15:43So the first born here has a name of affliction, friends, and
- 15:49she's crying and she's desperate for love, but God will be her
- 15:55husband. 33 She conceived again and bore a son, and said,
- 15:59because the Lord has heard that I was hated, he has therefore
- 16:03given me this son also. And she called his name Simeon.
- 16:07So the Lord hears friends. So she's crying out again in
- 16:11desperation to God. 34 And she conceived again and bore a son,
- 16:18and said, Now this time will my husband be joined to me, because
- 16:22I have borne him three sons. Therefore his name was Levi.
- 16:30So you can see here that she is desperate for love.
- 16:36She's desperate for Jacob to show her attention to actually
- 16:41be a husband to her and not to neglect her love.
- 16:50We'll end on 35. And she conceived again and bore
- 16:53a son. And she said, now I will praise
- 16:56the Lord. Therefore she called his name
- 16:58Judah and left bearing. So here's what you need to
- 17:02understand. Jacob loved Rachel, but the
- 17:08priestly line and the king, the royal line came from Leah.
- 17:19What an amazing thought, friends.
- 17:23Jesus Christ our Messiah came through Leah, not through
- 17:27Rachel. Think about it.
- 17:31I hope that you have been blessed by this amazing chapter
- 17:34in God's Word. I know I sure have.
- 17:37I'm praying for every single one of you.
- 17:39I love you. We'll see you back here
- 17:41tomorrow. God bless you.
