- 0:30Here's the part people don't like hearing. Love doesn't always mean staying. If something calls itself love but makes you anxious, if it feels familiar because it hurts, that's not love. That's trauma bonding wearing a mask.
- 0:45If respect requires you to disappear, it isn't respect. Love that demands obedience isn't love. It's fear with benefits. When you grow up getting hurt by the people who are supposed to protect you, you don't just stop trusting others. You stop trusting yourself. You pick partners who match the chaos you learn. Because chaos feels like harm.
- 1:05Familiar pain feels safer than unfamiliar peace. Love doesn't always mean staying. Sometimes staying teaches people they can keep crossing you. Leaving teaches them where you actually stand. And sometimes leaving is the most loving thing you can do. For you. And for them.
- 1:31I want to start this episode by saying something that might sound strange to people who grew up differently than I did. When I hear the word love, my body doesn't get excited. It now gets calm, warm, almost like food, like a full belly. If that doesn't make sense to you, that's okay. But if it does, this episode will resonate with you and it's for you.
- 2:00I want to be very clear about what love is not, at least not in my world. Love is not intensity. Love is not chaos. Love is not passion mixed with fear. Love is not wondering what version of someone you're going to get today.
- 2:23And love is definitely not pain that gets justified later. Because when you grow up in violence or chaos, love doesn't feel exciting. Love feels like not getting hurt. Love feels like nothing bad happening. Sorry, that one hit home. When I was a kid, love wasn't something you felt ever.
- 2:53It was something you survived. If I wasn't getting beat, that was a good day. I loved that day. If the house was quiet, that felt like love. If I was alone, I meant I was safe. That felt like love.
- 3:09if I felt safe enough to breathe, that felt like love. So when people talk about love, like it's fireworks or obsession or intensity, I know immediately we grew up in different worlds. Here's where this gets important. Because if you grew up like that, like me, you didn't grow up knowing love. You grew up learning it later though, and you don't learn it from other people first. You learn it by giving it to yourself.
- 3:38Self-love isn't narcissism, it's repair. It's teaching your nervous system that calm is allowed. That warmth doesn't have to be earned. That safety isn't temporary. Now I'm gonna give you a reframe, an explanation of something I said earlier. I said that love feels like food to me. And that's not an accident.
- 4:06When you're starved like I was long enough, you don't crave junk, you crave nourishment. Real love doesn't spike you, it feeds you. It steadies you. It lets your body exhale. Here's the part people don't like hearing. If something calls itself love but makes you anxious,
- 4:37if it keeps you on edge, if it feels familiar because it hurts, that's not love. That's trauma bonding wearing a mask. So when I say love matters more than anything to me, I don't mean romance. I mean safety. I mean calm. I mean warmth. Because love that doesn't feel safe, isn't love at all.
- 5:07I need to say something clearly before we go any further. A lot of people confuse respect with obedience, especially people who grew up in chaos. And if you grew up the way I did, respect didn't feel like being valued. It felt like being quiet enough to survive.
- 5:37I'm holding a card that says respect. But the version of respect I was taught as a kid had nothing to do with dignity. Respect in my household meant fear. Respect meant obedience. Respect meant silence. If you didn't talk back, if you didn't question, if you didn't react, that's where you were being respectful. Not because you were valued,
- 6:06but because you are manageable. That's not respect, that's control. If respect requires you to disappear, it isn't respect. Here's where this gets dangerous. Because when respect equals fear growing up, you bring that definition into adulthood. You tolerate being talked down to.
- 6:31You excuse being dismissed. You call silence keeping the peace. And you call staying being loyal. But staying silent is not the same as being respectful. Remember, love doesn't require silence to survive. This is where people get stuck. They say, but I love them and I believe them.
- 6:59But love without respect is just endurance. You can love someone and still leave. Because love doesn't always mean staying. Love that demands obedience isn't love, it's fear with benefits. Real respect feels different. Real respect doesn't need fear to function. It doesn't shrink when you speak.
- 7:23It doesn't punish honesty. And it doesn't confuse silence with loyalty. Respect lets you exist fully, not carefully. Here's the part some people won't like. If you were taught that respect means fear, you will feel guilty the first time you demand real respect. That guilt doesn't mean you're wrong.
- 7:52It means you're unlearning survival. Guilt is the echo of old rules breaking. So if you're listening to this and you're staying quiet to keep someone comfortable, that's not respect and it's definitely not love.
- 8:10Love doesn't always mean staying. Sometimes it means leaving the place where you were never respected. When people talk about trust, they usually talk about other people. They say things like, I don't trust easily or trust has to be earned. But when you grow up in chaos, trust isn't a relationship issue. It's a survival issue.
- 8:37When you grow up getting hurt by the people who are supposed to protect you, you don't just stop trusting others. You stop trusting yourself. Your instincts didn't keep you safe. Your feelings didn't stop the pain. So your nervous system makes a deal. Trust no one. Expect nothing. Stay alert.
- 9:02When trust is broken early, hypervigilance replaces connection. Here's the part people don't like hearing. When you don't trust yourself, you will choose what feels familiar, not what's healthy. You don't pick partners who are safe. You pick partners who match the chaos you learned. Because chaos feels like home.
- 9:27I didn't trust a soul, so I chose people I didn't need to trust. People who were emotionally unavailable, unpredictable, just like my mother. Familiar pain feels safer than unfamiliar peace. I'm going to take a second and talk about trust versus attachment. A lot of people think they're trusting. They're not. They're attached. And attachment says, I'll stay no matter what.
- 9:57Trust says, I can lean if I need to. If you can't leave, you're not trusting, you're trapped. This is where the title matters. Love doesn't always mean stay. Because when trust is broken, staying doesn't fix it. Staying teaches your nervous system to tolerate danger.
- 10:27Leaving teaches it that you're listening now. Leaving can be the first time you trust yourself. Real trust doesn't start with other people. It starts when you stop abandoning yourself. When you listen to discomfort instead of explaining it away. When you stop overriding your gut to keep someone else comfortable.
- 10:54Trust is rebuilt the moment you take yourself seriously. If you've ever said like me, I don't trust anyone, what you might really mean is, you were never taught it was safe to trust. And love doesn't mean staying in places that reinforce that lie. Sometimes love looks like leaving so trust can finally grow. Before we talk about safety, I wanna say something important. Safety is not a thought.
- 11:24It's not a logic. It's not something you convince yourself into. Safety is a body response. I'm holding a card now that says safety. And for some of us, safety has nothing to do with locks, doors, or physical threats. For me, safety shows up immediately.

- 12:19My chest gets tight, I get anxious, and I want to leave. Not because something bad is happening, but because my body recognizes a pattern before my mind does. Your body recognizes danger long before your brain writes excuses. Again, when you grow up in chaos like me, your body becomes an early warning system. Here's the problem.
- 12:46If you were taught that love requires endurance, you learn to override safety. You tell yourself to calm down. You explain it away and you stay. Because leaving feels dramatic. Because leaving feels disloyal. Because you were taught that love means staying no matter what.
- 13:11Love that costs you your safety is not love. It's survival repeating itself. Now we're going to talk about safety versus comfort. And let's get something straight. Safety is not comfort. Comfort can lie to you. Comfort says, this is familiar. Safety says, I can breathe here. Comfort keeps you stuck. Safety lets you relax. Relax.
- 13:38If your body is bracing, you're not safe, even if nothing bad is happening. Again, this is where people get it twisted. They say, but I love them and I don't doubt that. But love doesn't override safety and staying doesn't prove love. Sometimes staying teaches your body that it doesn't matter. Leaving teaches it that you're listening now.
- 14:04The first act of self-love is honoring your body's exit signal. Safety is a requirement, not a reward. And it's the shift that changes everything. Safety is not something you earn. It's something that must exist before love can grow. You don't work your way into safety. You don't explain your way into safety. If safety isn't present,
- 14:31Love doesn't get a vote. Love doesn't come first. Safety does. If your chest tightens, if anxiety spikes, if your body wants to leave, it's not a weakness. That's wisdom you earned the hard way. Love doesn't always mean staying. Sometimes it means walking away the first time your body says no. For a long time, I thought boundaries were cruel.
- 15:02I thought they were selfish. I thought they meant you didn't love someone enough. Because growing up, when I tried to set a boundary, I was punished. And I was made a mockery of. So I learned something very dangerous. That boundaries weren't protection. They were threats. When you grow up in chaos, a boundary isn't a healthy line. It's defiance. It's disrespect.
- 15:31It's you getting out of line. So you learn to erase yourself. You learn to tolerate. You learn to stay quiet. You don't learn love. You learn endurance. If boundaries were punished, staying became survival. This is exactly why people stay in places that hurt them for so long. They don't stay because they're weak. They stay because leaving was never modeled.
- 16:00as love. They stay because boundaries once meant pain. They confuse self-abandonment with loyalty and suffering with commitment. Staying doesn't mean you're strong. Sometimes it means you were trained. And here's what changed my life. I finally learned what a boundary actually is.
- 16:27A boundary is not punishment. It's not rejection. It's not even control. A boundary is clarity. It's saying this is where I end and you begin. And here's the part that people miss. A boundary allows me to love myself and the other person at the same time. Boundaries don't destroy love. They reveal whether it was real. And this is where the title becomes undeniable.
- 16:56Love doesn't always mean staying. Sometimes staying teaches people they can keep crossing you. Leaving teaches them where you actually stand. And sometimes leaving is the most loving thing you can do for you and for them. Boundaries are how self-respect shows up
- 17:26Not in anger, not in ultimatums, but in calm, consistent behavior. A boundary doesn't yell, it acts. If someone keeps violating your boundaries, the boundary isn't what you say, it's whether you stay or go. You don't need permission to leave a place where you're not safe, respected, or trusted. Again, if you grew up like I did,
- 17:55Boundaries might feel wrong. They might feel cold. They might feel unloving. That doesn't mean they are. It means you're breaking an old rule. Love doesn't always mean staying. Sometimes it means choosing yourself for the first time.
