- 0:44Speaker 2: Find us now on the Someone's Favorite Productions Podcast Network.
- 1:06Speaker 3: Anything for a good Cause. I'm a security guard. I
- 1:12Speaker 3: kill people every fucking day. That's right.
- 1:15Speaker 1: When I was growing up in Bakersfield, my favorite thing
- 1:18Speaker 1: in all the world was to go to the movies
- 1:19Speaker 1: on Saturday afternoons for the chapter plays.
- 1:23Speaker 4: I know that, mister man.
- 1:25Speaker 3: They also call them cereals. I'm not stupid, you know.
- 1:29Speaker 3: I am the devil, and I am here to do
- 1:31Speaker 3: the devil's work.
- 1:43Speaker 5: Welcome back, Gooles to a very special episode of the
- 1:47Speaker 5: Beyond the Blood podcast, where physical media fans are gonna
- 1:49Speaker 5: be eating good today as we're joined by Philip Scott,
- 1:53Speaker 5: a producer for the UK based boutique label Second Sight Films,
- 1:57Speaker 5: with over four hundred pieces right four hundred pieces to
- 2:01Speaker 5: his IMDb filmography. Phil has produced a countless amount of
- 2:05Speaker 5: behind the scenes material for physical media releases, including documentaries, interviews,
- 2:11Speaker 5: visual essays and more. And in twenty twenty one, Phil
- 2:15Speaker 5: co directed The Found Footage Phenomenon, a documentary chronicling the
- 2:19Speaker 5: history of the found footage genre that's now available on
- 2:21Speaker 5: streaming through Shutter and physical media through Vinegar Syndrome via
- 2:25Speaker 5: the Shutter Partner label. His most recent documentary, Generation Terror,
- 2:29Speaker 5: spent a year running the festival circuit just last year.
- 2:34Speaker 5: Since this month, we're celebrating all things the Texas Chainsaw Masker.
- 2:37Speaker 5: Phil's documentary, The Legacy of the Texas Chainsaasker, can be
- 2:41Speaker 5: found on the film's four K releases whether you own
- 2:43Speaker 5: the Second Sight Film's UK release or here in the
- 2:46Speaker 5: US through Dark Sky Films. We talk about the Texas
- 2:49Speaker 5: chancelascer legacy, his journey through the production of bonus materials,
- 2:53Speaker 5: the importance of physical media, and so much more. We
- 2:57Speaker 5: can't thank Phil enough for his time, his openness. This
- 3:02Speaker 5: was an incredible conversation. That's Steve and I. It was
- 3:04Speaker 5: incredibly personal for us and we cherished every single second
- 3:09Speaker 5: of it. We cannot thank him enough. We hope that you,
- 3:12Speaker 5: as listeners, if you're not already a fan of Second
- 3:15Speaker 5: Sight films or a collector of their releases, we hope
- 3:19Speaker 5: you are now because we have shelves full deservingly, and
- 3:23Speaker 5: we hope that this conversation maybe gets you on that
- 3:26Speaker 5: wagon a little bit more, but also gets you to
- 3:29Speaker 5: just appreciate the effort in the work that goes into
- 3:31Speaker 5: the behind the scenes material that's unfortunately not as watched
- 3:35Speaker 5: anymore except for people like us. You know, we're there
- 3:38Speaker 5: doing it. We're on the front lines doing it. I
- 3:40Speaker 5: know you are listeners, So sit back, enjoy, and welcome
- 3:45Speaker 5: back to the Beyond the Blood podcast. All right, Phil, So,
- 3:49Speaker 5: first of all, I want to kick this off by
- 3:51Speaker 5: just saying a giant thank you, thank you coming on
- 3:54Speaker 5: and doing this with us. How's everything on your end?
- 3:57Speaker 5: Is it like three o'clock your time right now?
- 4:00Speaker 3: It is? Mate? Yeah, so just gone three, but no,
- 4:02Speaker 3: thank you for having me. And yeah, it's been a
- 4:06Speaker 3: fun weekend. I was away with the girlfriend, so I
- 4:10Speaker 3: was hoping to do this yesterday with you guys. But yeah,
- 4:13Speaker 3: timing just in the line.
- 4:15Speaker 5: Oh wait, did you guys do anything fun?
- 4:17Speaker 3: No, it's just a getway to a friend's house where
- 4:21Speaker 3: I ended up somehow cooking, which happened right, Invite me
- 4:27Speaker 3: and then let me cook cheers?
- 4:29Speaker 5: Yeah, what did you end up cooking?
- 4:31Speaker 3: Barbecue?
- 4:33Speaker 5: Why was I For some reason I thought that I
- 4:35Speaker 5: was gonna ask, like, what did you grow up?
- 4:39Speaker 3: Chicken? Wings, burgers, sausages, all the all the classics.
- 4:44Speaker 5: Did we need an invite next time?
- 4:46Speaker 4: I know, listen, I would make the trip for that.
- 4:51Speaker 5: So, yeah, thank you, d We're so happy and so
- 4:53Speaker 5: stoked to have you on. I'm sure our listeners are
- 4:55Speaker 5: as well. Give us a little bit of an insight
- 4:58Speaker 5: just to kick this off, give us a little bit
- 5:01Speaker 5: of history as far as like what you do with
- 5:04Speaker 5: Second Site films, and then we'll get into kind of
- 5:07Speaker 5: some topics that we've been thinking of kind of behind
- 5:09Speaker 5: the scenes.
- 5:10Speaker 3: Sure, So to be honest with them, Second Sight, it's
- 5:14Speaker 3: myself and Chris Holden who were pretty much running things
- 5:18Speaker 3: behind the scenes. So Chris founded the company like over
- 5:21Speaker 3: thirty years ago now, so they've been around for a minute,
- 5:24Speaker 3: but I was working with them freelance wise probably about
- 5:30Speaker 3: ten for about ten years now, but I've been with
- 5:33Speaker 3: them full time for the last i want to say,
- 5:37Speaker 3: four and so part of my responsibilities there are doing
- 5:41Speaker 3: the bonus content stuff, but finding writers for the books,
- 5:47Speaker 3: then finding the academics for the essays, the video essays
- 5:50Speaker 3: these and the audio commentaries, as well as finding films
- 5:55Speaker 3: to actually release.
- 5:57Speaker 5: So everywhere we're massive Second Site fans. Actually, you know,
- 6:01Speaker 5: the video listeners will be able to see, but this
- 6:03Speaker 5: whole entire shelf here behind me is all Second Site.
- 6:06Speaker 5: So it was like the second half of this top part.
- 6:08Speaker 3: Yeah, I can see the Witch and Dawn the Dead Yeah.
- 6:12Speaker 5: Yeah, which and on the Dead's up there when Evil
- 6:14Speaker 5: Lurks is still on the way, but I just I
- 6:16Speaker 5: finally just dove into House of the Devil and then
- 6:20Speaker 5: I'm still making my way through the Hitcher set. That
- 6:21Speaker 5: one's a bit of a.
- 6:24Speaker 3: Right, Yeah. That was actually the first title I signed
- 6:29Speaker 3: for Second Site.
- 6:30Speaker 4: Oh no way, okay, so start with a bang, right yeah?
- 6:33Speaker 3: Whoa.
- 6:34Speaker 4: That was definitely highly anticipated. I remember like leading up
- 6:37Speaker 4: to the release.
- 6:39Speaker 5: Yeah, that was that took a while.
- 6:41Speaker 3: To bring together as the the original camera negative was
- 6:45Speaker 3: apparently missing at one point, so it was the whole
- 6:47Speaker 3: thing trying to locate that, which turned out to be
- 6:50Speaker 3: in perfect condition in New York in the Warner Brothers office.
- 6:57Speaker 5: That's insane to me, dude. Like the amount of times
- 6:59Speaker 5: I listened to, Like, I'm a big fan of Severn
- 7:03Speaker 5: and what they do, and every time I listened to
- 7:05Speaker 5: the Severn podcast, it's always some Indiana Jones like Journey
- 7:10Speaker 5: that they that they went on to find the camera
- 7:12Speaker 5: negatives for a movie that nobody's ever heard of.
- 7:16Speaker 3: Yeah, because those guys they go for the really obscure
- 7:18Speaker 3: stuff right then and then them tell me one time
- 7:21Speaker 3: of our a negative they found, like some guys like
- 7:25Speaker 3: shed covered in pigeon shit. Yeah, if they took care
- 7:29Speaker 3: of their film, very nice cool. Yeah, Luckily we don't
- 7:33Speaker 3: have that issue, as most of these films do tend
- 7:37Speaker 3: to have been taken care of to some degree.
- 7:41Speaker 5: Yeah. I feel like it was like Dracula, Prisoner of
- 7:44Speaker 5: Frankenstein was the one that they were like, yeah, we
- 7:46Speaker 5: found I don't know, we found like two negatives on
- 7:49Speaker 5: the other side of the world, and then we found
- 7:50Speaker 5: a third and that had footage that was missing, and
- 7:53Speaker 5: they're like, then we found a fourth in like a
- 7:56Speaker 5: flooded basement in Germany. You're like, what the hell.
- 8:00Speaker 3: Well, there's old movies. Man. They'll have like a version
- 8:03Speaker 3: for like Germany, vision for Italy, vision for the UK,
- 8:06Speaker 3: version of the US, Like, which version did you find?
- 8:09Speaker 4: Well, they recently ran into that, I believe the Day
- 8:11Speaker 4: of the Dead. For the longest time, they had thought
- 8:14Speaker 4: that the was it the camera negative was lost for
- 8:18Speaker 4: that for them to do a restoration, and you know,
- 8:21Speaker 4: just kind of out of the blue, they were able
- 8:23Speaker 4: to retrieve that. So hopefully we're able to get.
- 8:27Speaker 3: What was found there because I think originally it was
- 8:31Speaker 3: the interpositive, which is like the step down from the negative.
- 8:34Speaker 3: Oh okay, I think that's what was used to make
- 8:36Speaker 3: the Blu ray like ten years ago or whenever that
- 8:40Speaker 3: came out. I think that's what's been found again. Oh okay,
- 8:44Speaker 3: So I think that was reported missing recently as well.
- 8:47Speaker 3: So they lost the negative and the internegative. So it
- 8:50Speaker 3: was like, is there any materials left?
- 8:53Speaker 4: Like, please, just I would take anything at that point, yeah,
- 8:57Speaker 4: believe VHS. Yeah right.
- 8:59Speaker 5: You you imagine being a guy that they're like, oh,
- 9:02Speaker 5: it looked like looks like Joe was the one that
- 9:04Speaker 5: originally logged that he had the negative Joe, where did
- 9:07Speaker 5: you put that guy?
- 9:11Speaker 3: Yeah, you just feel like shit when you like, I
- 9:13Speaker 3: lost my god.
- 9:16Speaker 4: What a fumble?
- 9:20Speaker 5: God damn I misplaced. That's what you gotta say.
- 9:24Speaker 3: It was a bad day. Death doesn't exist. I'm sorry,
- 9:27Speaker 3: I'm sorry.
- 9:28Speaker 4: Okay, Yeah, yeah, oh.
- 9:31Speaker 5: My god, that's awesome.
- 9:31Speaker 1: No.
- 9:32Speaker 5: So four years with Second Site, and I will say
- 9:34Speaker 5: I think last four years have really been huge for
- 9:38Speaker 5: Second Sight. I mean they've become kind of like the premiere,
- 9:45Speaker 5: like how do I ward this? Every time, you know,
- 9:48Speaker 5: like today we're getting screen factory announcements, I'm like, okay,
- 9:51Speaker 5: you know cool. Every single time a Second Site announcement drops,
- 9:54Speaker 5: it's like a okay, stop what you're doing, Let's find
- 9:57Speaker 5: where the pre orders are at. Even if it's an upgrade,
- 9:59Speaker 5: even if is the title I already owned, like I
- 10:01Speaker 5: already had when Evil Lurks so had to upgrade that.
- 10:04Speaker 3: You know. Chris, Chris is engineering as well, to be honest,
- 10:08Speaker 3: He's like, we just announced it like whenever, Like a
- 10:11Speaker 3: lot of labels, we like we're going to do it
- 10:13Speaker 3: on the last Friday month. But Christ and more like, well,
- 10:16Speaker 3: we do it when we want to do it, man,
- 10:18Speaker 3: just keep people on their toes. She likes to do
- 10:21Speaker 3: and I, yeah, I'm fully on board with that.
- 10:24Speaker 4: Well, Chris and I were talking about we feel like
- 10:26Speaker 4: every one of these releases, especially with the special features,
- 10:29Speaker 4: is like the gold standard, I feel like compared to
- 10:33Speaker 4: other releases that we see, just because it's so in
- 10:36Speaker 4: depth and thorole with with you know, doing a deep
- 10:40Speaker 4: dive into all these all these different films.
- 10:43Speaker 3: Cheers man. Yeah, And in terms of the the catalog,
- 10:46Speaker 3: there's no rhyme or reason to it. It's just films
- 10:48Speaker 3: we love. So when you're dealing with something you you
- 10:51Speaker 3: do love, you put your heart and soul into it.
- 10:53Speaker 3: And so every release is kind of special to us
- 10:56Speaker 3: in that sense. So the kid that you see in
- 11:00Speaker 3: n actual set is something like that we do put
- 11:03Speaker 3: into it ourselves. Is we want to be proud of
- 11:05Speaker 3: these releases.
- 11:07Speaker 4: Can I ask how hard is it to keep everything,
- 11:10Speaker 4: like you know, under lock and key with these releases
- 11:14Speaker 4: before they're announced. I can't imagine, like how exciting there
- 11:16Speaker 4: has to be like when you're actively working on these releases.
- 11:20Speaker 3: Oh for sure, man, especially some films as well. It's
- 11:22Speaker 3: like I just want to scream about this film. But
- 11:27Speaker 3: and this sometimes like we've been working on something for
- 11:29Speaker 3: for months and months and months and it was on
- 11:30Speaker 3: it some other label would just say, oh releasing this, ah, yeah,
- 11:36Speaker 3: like we have months away? Why why now?
- 11:40Speaker 4: Well, wasn't wasn't that the case with the Blair Witch project.
- 11:44Speaker 1: No?
- 11:45Speaker 3: Luckily that one because we had the the blessing from
- 11:49Speaker 3: Lionsgate to go ahead with the restoration and everything. Well,
- 11:52Speaker 3: we're all good with that. They were going to follow us.
- 11:55Speaker 3: But there's some films that we've we acquired that have
- 11:58Speaker 3: been released elsewhere that we've just and now because it's
- 12:02Speaker 3: because already a pretty pimping addition out.
- 12:06Speaker 5: Ok, Well, what's hard. I think what's really difficult, especially
- 12:09Speaker 5: US in the US market, is you have like I
- 12:12Speaker 5: remember Second announced their Blair which and then you had
- 12:14Speaker 5: imprint out of Australia announcing theirs.
- 12:17Speaker 4: Yes, that's what I was referring to.
- 12:19Speaker 5: So a lot of times like when evil lurks. You know,
- 12:21Speaker 5: we've gotten US R L J E Blu Ray. Now
- 12:24Speaker 5: we've got the US four K, the shutter of four K,
- 12:27Speaker 5: and then your other option, your more premium option, is
- 12:30Speaker 5: the UK Second Site offering. So there's always like when
- 12:35Speaker 5: there's major announcements or upgrades in the US, there is
- 12:37Speaker 5: a little bit of like a we we kind of
- 12:39Speaker 5: hesitate for a second because we wait to see if
- 12:42Speaker 5: one of our other markets are going to tap into
- 12:44Speaker 5: that as well.
- 12:46Speaker 3: Yeah, and we do try and keep on top of
- 12:48Speaker 3: that as well. In honesty, so if you know there's
- 12:50Speaker 3: an addition coming out, we're trying to drop a little
- 12:53Speaker 3: hint or teaser on socials just hopefully get people to
- 12:57Speaker 3: pick up slightly and be no, maybe it's worth waiting
- 13:00Speaker 3: just a few more weeks.
- 13:02Speaker 5: Well that's uh. You know. One thing I really admire
- 13:04Speaker 5: what you guys do is, you know Arrow or Kino Lurber.
- 13:08Speaker 5: They'll post, hey we're working on this, uh you know,
- 13:11Speaker 5: but they'll give no release date and it just kind
- 13:13Speaker 5: of you know, a year, two years whatever. My kind
- 13:18Speaker 5: of beginnings with Second Site were always like I remember
- 13:20Speaker 5: when you guys first posted like a photo of working
- 13:23Speaker 5: on the restoration of the Hitcher. That felt like two
- 13:26Speaker 5: years ago, you know what I mean, it could have been,
- 13:29Speaker 5: but I remember all these people. Every every single post
- 13:33Speaker 5: Second Site made, there were comments for like a year
- 13:36Speaker 5: of like, okay, you know, oh.
- 13:39Speaker 3: Yeah, that's kind of weak, kind of bit on the ass,
- 13:41Speaker 3: and like every announcement that was at the on Hitch
- 13:47Speaker 3: at the Hitch, it's like, damn it, we're still working
- 13:49Speaker 3: on it, but it's coming, it's coming. But yeah, trying
- 13:53Speaker 3: of ya gotta lean back a little bit in that
- 13:55Speaker 3: sense and to be realistic. So if we're working on something,
- 13:59Speaker 3: because we did it recently with dead Man's Shoes, because
- 14:01Speaker 3: we can have trouble trying to find the negative for
- 14:03Speaker 3: that as well, but we announced it and so there's
- 14:07Speaker 3: a bigger title for the US, but here in the
- 14:09Speaker 3: UK it's quite established. So it was like dead Night Shoes,
- 14:12Speaker 3: dead Night Shoes and Possessions.
- 14:17Speaker 4: I was going to bring that up. I was like,
- 14:19Speaker 4: that's like, that's like definitely at the top of my list.
- 14:22Speaker 3: But that will be coming soon, okay, out long before
- 14:27Speaker 3: dead Man's Shoes.
- 14:29Speaker 5: I have that beautiful Mondo vision Possessions. So I need
- 14:33Speaker 5: to I need to really uh think about or I
- 14:37Speaker 5: need to come to terms with the fact that I'm
- 14:39Speaker 5: going to own two four K comes out, you know
- 14:42Speaker 5: what I mean, Because that's that's always such a tough
- 14:45Speaker 5: thing to be like it was that way with Late
- 14:48Speaker 5: Night with the Devil when when that started getting it's
- 14:51Speaker 5: the announcements. I remember, like I jumped on the umbrella
- 14:54Speaker 5: and then somebody was like, oh, second Sight is putting
- 14:56Speaker 5: it out.
- 14:56Speaker 3: I'm like, god, damn, amazing work man. They they says,
- 15:00Speaker 3: it's awesome because that's like the full like the TV
- 15:03Speaker 3: magazine and stuff. Right, they get to work on their releases.
- 15:07Speaker 3: Them guys, they.
- 15:08Speaker 5: Do, they do, and they they The only thing is like,
- 15:12Speaker 5: it's such a half the time when I ordered direct
- 15:15Speaker 5: from them, I kind of forget that I even ordered something,
- 15:17Speaker 5: and then and then I get the dispatch notice and
- 15:20Speaker 5: I'm like, I like, okay, cool with shipping like all,
- 15:22Speaker 5: and then I forget again because it takes so long
- 15:25Speaker 5: to get through customs and they get then to get
- 15:27Speaker 5: to New Jersey of all places, like you know, so
- 15:31Speaker 5: it's always like months. It feels like if and then
- 15:33Speaker 5: it shows up. I'm like, oh, yeah, I did order
- 15:35Speaker 5: this last year. Yeah great. I'm I'm just hoping. I
- 15:42Speaker 5: think we're gonna have to We're gonna have to connect
- 15:44Speaker 5: after this fill. We need to build a good enough
- 15:46Speaker 5: friendship because uh I need I'm hoping that there's a
- 15:50Speaker 5: warehouse somewhere chock full of Texas chains. I'm asking for
- 15:54Speaker 5: four k's from second site. Uh that are not reseller
- 15:57Speaker 5: priced well.
- 16:00Speaker 3: House where it is stocked. Actually that's the thing that exists.
- 16:03Speaker 3: But yeah, as to what's in there, yeah that berries.
- 16:07Speaker 5: Who knows right. I almost did it when we were
- 16:11Speaker 5: prepping for our main episode. I was like, ah, should
- 16:15Speaker 5: I because I remember I missed it and then it
- 16:18Speaker 5: sold out and then of course you start getting the
- 16:20Speaker 5: seller prices on eBay.
- 16:22Speaker 4: Oh it's insane, so stressful.
- 16:25Speaker 5: Man.
- 16:27Speaker 3: Have you guys seen a new currosella film cloud?
- 16:32Speaker 5: I've heard of it.
- 16:33Speaker 3: I haven't seen it that last night. And that's kind
- 16:36Speaker 3: of about a scalper who gets into some serious ship.
- 16:39Speaker 3: Oh no, damn. That's what life is like for ebays.
- 16:46Speaker 5: The kids, the guys that are like scalping Pokemon cards
- 16:48Speaker 5: when kids are waiting in line.
- 16:50Speaker 3: It's just like, yeah, just buying up things that people want,
- 16:53Speaker 3: so you just flog it online for like social prices. Like, yeah,
- 16:57Speaker 3: those guys do exist, only what's coming to it.
- 17:00Speaker 5: The latest trend is people I didn't know this was
- 17:03Speaker 5: a thing, but like people are actually posting eBay prices
- 17:06Speaker 5: for things that are pre orders yep, and the man
- 17:13Speaker 5: they're like now selling it for one hundred dollars more
- 17:15Speaker 5: and they're like, when I received my pre order, then
- 17:18Speaker 5: I'll sell it to you.
- 17:18Speaker 4: Yeah, exaggerate, But the what do you mean, Chris? Did
- 17:23Speaker 4: you see that? For the Nightmare in Elm Street set,
- 17:25Speaker 4: like the Steal Book set, they're already they're already putting
- 17:28Speaker 4: it on eBay, which is like insane to me, Like
- 17:30Speaker 4: you haven't gotten the item yet, It's.
- 17:32Speaker 5: Like, what's the what's the They announced four thousand to
- 17:34Speaker 5: all the eBay guys. You're like, all right, here we
- 17:36Speaker 5: go boys this time. Steve, if you want to kick
- 17:41Speaker 5: into uh, kick into some of the questions that we had.
- 17:44Speaker 4: Yeah, absolutely so, uh, Phil, I wanted to start off
- 17:48Speaker 4: just kind of throwing this your way. So do you
- 17:51Speaker 4: remember the first horror film that truly unsettled or inspired you?
- 17:57Speaker 3: Yeah? The Dead? Okay, it's one of my favorite films
- 18:02Speaker 3: of all time, and it's just one of those films
- 18:04Speaker 3: that made me realize I loved horror because it scared
- 18:07Speaker 3: the shit. I mean I was eleven. Oh okay, it
- 18:11Speaker 3: gave me nightmares for months, But the nightmares were exciting
- 18:15Speaker 3: because I was in Dawn the Dead, so I was
- 18:18Speaker 3: reliving during the Dead. Yeah, and it was just like,
- 18:21Speaker 3: my god, I have such an impact on me at
- 18:23Speaker 3: such a young age, and yeah, sure I shouldn't have
- 18:26Speaker 3: been watching it, but the the effect it had on
- 18:29Speaker 3: me was so profound because I've been chasing that sort
- 18:32Speaker 3: of high ever since.
- 18:34Speaker 4: I think that's part of the appeal though, Like when
- 18:36Speaker 4: you're that age, these movies I feel like are not
- 18:39Speaker 4: movies that you're supposed to be necessarily watching then, so
- 18:43Speaker 4: it's almost like, I don't know, I feel like that
- 18:45Speaker 4: that just fuels the desire to go and check out
- 18:49Speaker 4: more of these horror films. And I feel like that's
- 18:51Speaker 4: the case for most of us.
- 18:52Speaker 3: You know, ironically it is because i'd been watching Night
- 18:55Speaker 3: of the Living Dead just prior to that. We're in
- 18:58Speaker 3: a We're on a family holiday, so in this little
- 19:00Speaker 3: cabin in the woods, so perfect place to watch. The
- 19:05Speaker 3: friends we were with, they my parents' friends. They're like,
- 19:09Speaker 3: if you like this film, you need to see Dawn
- 19:11Speaker 3: the Dead. And then obviously back in the UK back
- 19:13Speaker 3: then it was banned, so it's like I get this film.
- 19:16Speaker 3: So then that took a couple of years to actually
- 19:18Speaker 3: track down a friend's parents had a copy, so like, yes,
- 19:22Speaker 3: find the found it and then yeah, I get to
- 19:25Speaker 3: see it. It was just like so much mind blown.
- 19:29Speaker 4: Was that more common like in in the area where
- 19:33Speaker 4: you lived where films were banned like that then or
- 19:36Speaker 4: harder to get a hold of.
- 19:38Speaker 3: No, it's quite easy because I lived in quite shady
- 19:43Speaker 3: little They had video rentals. They were in the back
- 19:47Speaker 3: of bands, so like people come to your house in
- 19:49Speaker 3: a van like what do you want? Wow? It was like, okay,
- 19:53Speaker 3: well you get all these like bootlegged like screen as
- 19:56Speaker 3: they are now, but I think they've had a little
- 19:58Speaker 3: time code on there so they have all the latest releases.
- 20:01Speaker 3: It's like, what the hell's this big clop block most
- 20:04Speaker 3: of the screen. But yeah, again, the video Nasties was
- 20:07Speaker 3: quite easy where I.
- 20:08Speaker 5: Was Okay, that's interesting, man, that's the video. I remember.
- 20:12Speaker 5: I went to this whole thing a couple of years
- 20:14Speaker 5: ago where I like dove into the video Nasties and
- 20:15Speaker 5: I was pretty disappointed that like half the movies, half
- 20:19Speaker 5: of the seventy three were like uh could I feel
- 20:22Speaker 5: like they could have been a light r rating here
- 20:24Speaker 5: in the US at that time.
- 20:25Speaker 3: You know what I mean, Yeah, most of it just
- 20:26Speaker 3: the title. Yeah, yeah, come on, man, there's nothing wrong
- 20:30Speaker 3: in this movie.
- 20:32Speaker 5: Yeah, there's like there's like incredible levels to it, because
- 20:36Speaker 5: like the darkest of the video nasties are like really dark,
- 20:39Speaker 5: and then the majority of them are like, okay, whatever,
- 20:41Speaker 5: this could pass on TV. You know at this point.
- 20:43Speaker 3: Now show most of them are out now and they're
- 20:44Speaker 3: like rated fifteen, like so it's like not even anywhere
- 20:47Speaker 3: near remotely being banned anymore. It's like, yes, now suitable
- 20:51Speaker 3: for teenagers. Yeah, have to change your heart.
- 20:54Speaker 4: Well, even I know that Faces of Death just recently
- 20:58Speaker 4: within the last couple of months, another re release, and
- 21:02Speaker 4: I remember seeing that way back in the day, and
- 21:05Speaker 4: I just remember that that was I think you build
- 21:08Speaker 4: it up so much your mind. Upon revisit definitely didn't
- 21:12Speaker 4: age as well and isn't as built up as I
- 21:14Speaker 4: remember it being.
- 21:16Speaker 5: Yeah, well it's funny because sorry, fel get good.
- 21:20Speaker 3: No, it's just gonna say, like when you're you're younger
- 21:23Speaker 3: as well, is it's easier to distinguish between that it's
- 21:27Speaker 3: harder to distinguish what's real and what's fake. And then
- 21:30Speaker 3: in Face of Death there's a lot of fake stuff
- 21:32Speaker 3: in there, which as an adult and as a twenty
- 21:35Speaker 3: twenty five like, oh yeah, that really is fake.
- 21:41Speaker 5: It's funny because one of my favorite movies of all
- 21:43Speaker 5: time is kind of a holocaust.
- 21:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 21:46Speaker 5: You know what what that movie did to me when
- 21:48Speaker 5: I was a kid and I saw it was kind
- 21:49Speaker 5: of unprecedented, and it's I felt like for years, I
- 21:53Speaker 5: felt like, you know, a guy on the on the
- 21:55Speaker 5: front lines, like covered in an armor, ready to fight
- 21:58Speaker 5: for that movie's justice. And uh, you know now people
- 22:02Speaker 5: back I would say, like ten years ago that movie
- 22:04Speaker 5: was still kind of like, oh nobody watches that. Man,
- 22:07Speaker 5: that's that's really gross. You're sick now. I'm like, look,
- 22:10Speaker 5: well we got a four K. I know, we even
- 22:15Speaker 5: have a peda cut, Like look at this man we
- 22:17Speaker 5: got you know, it's.
- 22:18Speaker 3: High heart now right, It's like it's approached like out
- 22:21Speaker 3: of cult. Them is like it's a mainstream thing now,
- 22:24Speaker 3: it's a respectable thing. It's yeah, it's the three sixty
- 22:28Speaker 3: that's happened to that movie is quite insane.
- 22:31Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah, So I want to ask because we were
- 22:34Speaker 5: kind of diving into the unreliable production credits of IMDb,
- 22:38Speaker 5: which is like the worst, you know what I mean,
- 22:40Speaker 5: I feel like and you know we were finding uh,
- 22:44Speaker 5: such early credits from you co producing, like Cannon Fodder,
- 22:47Speaker 5: which is a making of Life Force, you know, Uh,
- 22:51Speaker 5: the Scream Queen's documentary, a lot of stuff with Callum
- 22:54Speaker 5: Woodell directing, Like most of that stuff you were co producing.
- 22:58Speaker 5: What was it like or kind of like what drew
- 23:00Speaker 5: you into wanting to make documentary People say behind the
- 23:06Speaker 5: scenes fatures, I label them as documentaries. What was that
- 23:10Speaker 5: initial draw for you? Did you come from a documentary
- 23:12Speaker 5: film like background or was it just no?
- 23:14Speaker 3: To be honest me, it's just being a film lover.
- 23:17Speaker 3: Like I've always been a film fan first and foremost,
- 23:21Speaker 3: and I'd always wanted to kind of cross the aisle,
- 23:24Speaker 3: if you will, and get into the production side of things.
- 23:28Speaker 3: But again, I'm from pretty rough, sketchy part town. It's like,
- 23:32Speaker 3: how do I get into the film industry? Is there
- 23:34Speaker 3: a film industry? It's like, how do I get into that?
- 23:38Speaker 3: And so it took a long time to actually figure
- 23:40Speaker 3: that out. And luckily it was when the Blu Rays
- 23:45Speaker 3: scene was booming. Because I'd be making short films and
- 23:48Speaker 3: stuff like that, people had seen them and like, oh,
- 23:51Speaker 3: you're a cameraman, you can come and shoot these interviews.
- 23:53Speaker 3: And it's like, do you want to work on this
- 23:56Speaker 3: we're making this release. I'm like, shit, you're doing life
- 23:59Speaker 3: for us. Fuck yeah, I'm in. I love that film.
- 24:01Speaker 3: Let's do it for me. It's like getting to geek
- 24:03Speaker 3: out with people who made the films as well as like,
- 24:06Speaker 3: hone my filmmaking capabilities.
- 24:10Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, no, it's it's awesome man. I mean we
- 24:13Speaker 5: are like I feel like we're part of the five
- 24:16Speaker 5: percent that really loves like bonus features for people like
- 24:19Speaker 5: Steve and I influence purchasing decision. Yeah, Like, no matter
- 24:23Speaker 5: how nice, no matter how nice of a physical release
- 24:25Speaker 5: you are going to give me. You know, I want
- 24:27Speaker 5: the documentaries give me. It was the same when you know,
- 24:29Speaker 5: when you guys release Blair Witch Project. This surprise to
- 24:32Speaker 5: me that there was a documentary double the length of
- 24:35Speaker 5: the movie on that release.
- 24:38Speaker 3: Yeah, So yeah, that was fun And say a big
- 24:43Speaker 3: blay Witch fan like that was when those films are
- 24:45Speaker 3: scared to show me in high school? No, yeah, being
- 24:48Speaker 3: able to actually put that thing back together again, So
- 24:50Speaker 3: seeing everything that they have a shot to it and
- 24:53Speaker 3: putting it all back together was like as a film
- 24:56Speaker 3: found was just like fucking insane, Like I got to
- 24:58Speaker 3: do that amazing. That's incredible again to tell the story
- 25:02Speaker 3: about like how that film got made and just everything
- 25:06Speaker 3: that happened to those guys is wild. I mean, your
- 25:10Speaker 3: first film, you here a home run like that. It's like,
- 25:12Speaker 3: come on, man, how And to this day people are like,
- 25:15Speaker 3: it's the next play witch, It's the next play Witch.
- 25:18Speaker 3: But if you watch the documentary, that might not be
- 25:21Speaker 3: a good thing. There's a bit of a curse in
- 25:23Speaker 3: that sense, because how do you live up to that?
- 25:25Speaker 4: It was like lightning in a bottle with that movie
- 25:28Speaker 4: at that time. Yeah, So the opportunity for Second Site
- 25:36Speaker 4: Films to release such an important piece of genre history
- 25:40Speaker 4: was incredibly exciting for collectors obviously like us. So, how
- 25:44Speaker 4: did the opportunity come along for you to direct the
- 25:47Speaker 4: Legacy of Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
- 25:51Speaker 3: Yeah? So Chris sid has had the rights for TCM
- 25:54Speaker 3: for a number of years now, and the anniversar who's
- 25:56Speaker 3: coming up and we're just like, what can we do
- 25:59Speaker 3: to make this special?
- 26:01Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 26:02Speaker 3: I got just the thing. So we get a bunch
- 26:05Speaker 3: of filmmakers who have worked on the film, and have
- 26:07Speaker 3: been inspired by the film, and we just waxed lyrical
- 26:10Speaker 3: about how great the film is and he was like, yeah,
- 26:12Speaker 3: go ahead and do that. So, yeah, you're putting that
- 26:15Speaker 3: thing together while the restoration and everything was being done,
- 26:20Speaker 3: and yeah, unsurprisingly it's very easy to find filmmakers willing
- 26:23Speaker 3: to talk about Texas Chase and Maasaca.
- 26:25Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, absolutely, I believe that now with this was
- 26:31Speaker 4: the like the release already in production when they were
- 26:34Speaker 4: doing the restoration or did you add the documentary a
- 26:38Speaker 4: little bit later, like further down the line.
- 26:41Speaker 3: No, So it's kind of in tandem. So while the
- 26:43Speaker 3: restoration was being done, I was over here doing the
- 26:46Speaker 3: filmmaking side of things. So I was getting the documentary
- 26:49Speaker 3: shot pretty much all over the world. So there's people
- 26:52Speaker 3: in Columbia yet Adam Marcus, I know he's on here recently,
- 26:56Speaker 3: the guy, and we had people in Germany, people in
- 27:00Speaker 3: the UK, people in both coasts of America. So yeah,
- 27:03Speaker 3: well I was doing that. Chris was with Silver Salt
- 27:07Speaker 3: getting the film restored, so see the respiration until I
- 27:12Speaker 3: was ready to edit the documentary and splice footage in.
- 27:16Speaker 5: I love like there's been so many Texas Shanes on
- 27:18Speaker 5: ASCAR documentaries. I mean, you know, David Gregory directed one.
- 27:22Speaker 5: I know Alexandra Hella Nicholas, she was involved in Chain Reactions,
- 27:26Speaker 5: which was another you know, but I remember the announcement
- 27:31Speaker 5: for the Texas Chance to asking four K. I had
- 27:34Speaker 5: heard rumbles from people that were like, Oh, there's this
- 27:36Speaker 5: really awesome documentary that's going to be released alongside it
- 27:39Speaker 5: with it, and there was a lot of it almost
- 27:42Speaker 5: felt like in our circle there was more rumblings about
- 27:44Speaker 5: the documentary than there was about the movie getting you
- 27:47Speaker 5: know what I mean, because that was what I heard,
- 27:49Speaker 5: Like I had heard, I heard documentary first four K second.
- 27:54Speaker 3: It was But yeah, I guess it's the new material,
- 27:56Speaker 3: right as I mean with Dave's documentary, is point even
- 28:00Speaker 3: trying to do another documentary about the making of Texas
- 28:03Speaker 3: Change of Masaca, because you know, he hit a home
- 28:06Speaker 3: room with the first documentary, so it's like his point
- 28:08Speaker 3: is trying to imitate that. So it was always trying
- 28:11Speaker 3: to figure out what could we do that's new and
- 28:14Speaker 3: so yeah, so I'm glad there is some excitement around
- 28:17Speaker 3: that because it's something I'd like to do a bit
- 28:19Speaker 3: more of.
- 28:21Speaker 5: Yeah, there was a lot man and especially like I
- 28:24Speaker 5: I can watch and then this amount of documentary, there's
- 28:27Speaker 5: always something new, there's always somebody who wasn't interviewed in
- 28:29Speaker 5: a previous one. And there was a moment right towards
- 28:33Speaker 5: the end of the documentary when Mick Garris talks about
- 28:37Speaker 5: his friendship with Tobey Hooper, and to you know, Mick
- 28:42Speaker 5: Garris is somebody who I've listened to his podcast countless times,
- 28:45Speaker 5: Like he's so prevalent in the community, and to see
- 28:48Speaker 5: him getting emotional about this friendship that he had, it
- 28:52Speaker 5: was one of those little bits of that documentary that
- 28:54Speaker 5: was like, this alone is worth the investment. Like the
- 28:58Speaker 5: emotional attachment that the guests have to this movie are incredible,
- 29:02Speaker 5: and he is like, he's one of my favorite people
- 29:05Speaker 5: that were interviewed for the documentary because everything he says
- 29:08Speaker 5: is so insightful, you.
- 29:09Speaker 3: Know, because he is like a horror encyclopedia, right, So
- 29:13Speaker 3: he was like the wise man in the documentary, like
- 29:16Speaker 3: he's lived through all of this, Like he's like the
- 29:18Speaker 3: guy boots on the ground guy. So he knew Toby
- 29:21Speaker 3: and had that relationship, whereas most of the other people
- 29:24Speaker 3: like my age and be inspired by the film so yeah,
- 29:28Speaker 3: having someone close to the actual source material was important,
- 29:32Speaker 3: and I agree, he's absolutely incredible in the documentary. And
- 29:36Speaker 3: so it's just all how open he was, Like we
- 29:40Speaker 3: didn't ask him like I'm going to be asking you
- 29:42Speaker 3: tough questions about Toby now, it's just off the cuff,
- 29:45Speaker 3: just asking him about his relationship, and he just like
- 29:48Speaker 3: you still wrought to him. And so yeah, I'm glad
- 29:51Speaker 3: it actually came across because when you're making it, you
- 29:53Speaker 3: sat in this office is editing way, He's like, it's
- 29:56Speaker 3: a bit emotional something here, Yeah, because it's actually gonna
- 29:59Speaker 3: be else elsewhere. So I'm glad it does carry over.
- 30:04Speaker 5: I feel like he's somebody that you barely have to interview.
- 30:06Speaker 5: I feel like you could just ask him a question
- 30:07Speaker 5: to let him go, walk out of the room and
- 30:10Speaker 5: like come back in an hour and he's still going.
- 30:12Speaker 3: You're like, And it was important for me as well
- 30:15Speaker 3: as I was thinking with the documentary. With the making
- 30:18Speaker 3: of you always get the stories like well, when we
- 30:21Speaker 3: were in this spoiling weather and everything was horrible, everyone's smelly. Yeah,
- 30:25Speaker 3: it's like you don't really get the what came after
- 30:28Speaker 3: aspect of it, Like everyone knows like Toby's career should
- 30:31Speaker 3: have been up here, like you make one of the
- 30:34Speaker 3: greatest horror films of all time, and then how do
- 30:37Speaker 3: you follow that up? But there's not many documentaries about
- 30:40Speaker 3: what do you do after you've made that initial home run?
- 30:43Speaker 3: Where'd you go from there? Which is the same as
- 30:44Speaker 3: the play Witch, Like those guys couldn't relive that magic,
- 30:48Speaker 3: and Toby suffered the same.
- 30:49Speaker 5: Fate, and same with two. When the documentary talked about
- 30:53Speaker 5: the let's call it the score, you know, the music,
- 30:57Speaker 5: the sound that was incredib because we had just gotten
- 31:01Speaker 5: Waxwork Records had just you know, remastered the whole score
- 31:05Speaker 5: or I say score with air quotes. And I threw
- 31:09Speaker 5: that on a couple of nights ago when I don't know,
- 31:11Speaker 5: I was doing editing or something, and I almost felt
- 31:14Speaker 5: as scared of the sound effects coming out of my
- 31:17Speaker 5: record player.
- 31:18Speaker 3: The movie it's not natural, it's not it's not music
- 31:22Speaker 3: like you say, it's just just horrible sounds. Yeah. Yeah,
- 31:28Speaker 3: everything in that movie is just deciding to fuck with you,
- 31:30Speaker 3: and I love it. I guess this is what Texas
- 31:33Speaker 3: is right, just being up here in the middle of nowhere.
- 31:35Speaker 5: Yeah, when you so clearly. Obviously at this point everybody
- 31:41Speaker 5: knows texts chains I'm ask are heavily influential to you.
- 31:44Speaker 5: Did you find so I'm asking this because anytime I
- 31:49Speaker 5: get a chance to like do this, there's a little
- 31:50Speaker 5: bit of like an existential feeling of like this is incredible,
- 31:54Speaker 5: Like I'm so wrapped up in this. There's a little
- 31:56Speaker 5: bit of like time like when we end this today
- 31:58Speaker 5: where I kind of have to process this and I'm like, okay,
- 32:00Speaker 5: like let it. When you were from day one of
- 32:04Speaker 5: starting the documentary of okay, we're going to make this
- 32:06Speaker 5: to the end, how did your how do I wear
- 32:10Speaker 5: this relationship with the film change? Did you grow a
- 32:14Speaker 5: new appreciation for it? Was there some sort of like
- 32:17Speaker 5: do you look at the movie differently now having made
- 32:19Speaker 5: the documentary?
- 32:21Speaker 3: No, I've always because I'll be honest, my original encounter
- 32:25Speaker 3: with Texas Chains on Masco wasn't that favorable. I wasn't
- 32:29Speaker 3: enamored with the film. When I was like thirteen, I
- 32:33Speaker 3: was expecting Friday the thirteenth, you know, I wanted a
- 32:36Speaker 3: blood bath. I'm like, oh, it's just making me feel horrible.
- 32:40Speaker 3: It's no blood. What is this? So I was very
- 32:43Speaker 3: much Anti Texas changsaw for a long time, but then
- 32:47Speaker 3: I grew up and I rewatched it when the DVD
- 32:50Speaker 3: came out and I was like, fuck, is a really
- 32:53Speaker 3: good film, and let's be As I get older, my
- 32:56Speaker 3: appreciation for the film just grows as well as now
- 33:00Speaker 3: was kids kids in air quotes, But when we first
- 33:03Speaker 3: watched it, they were adults, so like the dumb adults.
- 33:06Speaker 3: But now I'm like, I'm old. Now I'm forty one,
- 33:08Speaker 3: and I'm looking at like they are children. They are kids,
- 33:11Speaker 3: and yeah they comes one more of a tragedy, I guess,
- 33:14Speaker 3: and everything he's guests just had a So as I
- 33:16Speaker 3: get older, my appreciation of love for age just carries
- 33:19Speaker 3: on growing. It's funny.
- 33:22Speaker 5: It's funny with these movies how that changes. Like now
- 33:24Speaker 5: I'm thirty four, I'm gonna be well turning thirty four,
- 33:27Speaker 5: and I look at some of these movies, I'm like, damn,
- 33:29Speaker 5: this guy's sixteen years younger than me getting butchered off
- 33:32Speaker 5: in a movie like.
- 33:33Speaker 3: Yeah, because I went to see the I know we
- 33:37Speaker 3: did Last Summer remake recently. Growing up with that movie,
- 33:40Speaker 3: they were always the old kids, like they were so old,
- 33:43Speaker 3: and but now watching this on was like, damn, they
- 33:45Speaker 3: were kids, man, They're like, stop killing the kids. Let
- 33:49Speaker 3: the kids live. Man.
- 33:52Speaker 5: We need we need like a senior home slasher.
- 33:54Speaker 3: We do actually watched them. You see new Pete Davidson
- 33:58Speaker 3: movie The Home.
- 34:00Speaker 5: I heard of it, I haven't seen it yet.
- 34:02Speaker 3: Yeah. Then you have a splasher film in a home
- 34:06Speaker 3: there to leave the old people alone? Man, how only
- 34:09Speaker 3: want you to kill people? My age forty year olds?
- 34:12Speaker 3: That's it.
- 34:13Speaker 5: It's like, what's the demographic? But it's like you can
- 34:15Speaker 5: go back. You can watch Ron Howard's Cocoon. You know,
- 34:17Speaker 5: that's pretty not a horror movie, but it's got you know,
- 34:20Speaker 5: some old people. Yeah yeah, Typick like Bubba ho tep
- 34:25Speaker 5: right would probably be like the closest thing.
- 34:28Speaker 3: That's my sweet spot right there.
- 34:30Speaker 5: Yeah right, anymore? Oh my god, that's incredible.
- 34:35Speaker 4: So yeah, oh no, I was just gonna say, so, Phil,
- 34:39Speaker 4: what do you think Seth's Texas Chains saw apart from
- 34:42Speaker 4: other horror films of its era? And why does it
- 34:46Speaker 4: still resonate today?
- 34:48Speaker 3: Ironically? The thing that I think sets in it pis
- 34:50Speaker 3: is everything I hated about it when I was a kid.
- 34:54Speaker 3: It's competently made, it's aimed at you know, adults, it's
- 34:57Speaker 3: not it's not teen fodder. It's very much this is
- 35:01Speaker 3: an adult leaning film. And so yeah, I guess it's
- 35:06Speaker 3: the fact that it was so radically different than I
- 35:09Speaker 3: guess it's the seventies ethos of filmmaking, which you know,
- 35:12Speaker 3: Toby did abandon in the eighties when everything was big
- 35:15Speaker 3: and bright and crazy.
- 35:16Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 35:16Speaker 3: So yeah, I think it's that grounded realism that was
- 35:20Speaker 3: prevalent in seventies horror, granted, but it's the fact that
- 35:24Speaker 3: it's killing teenagers who really do look like you know,
- 35:28Speaker 3: nineteen twenty year olds. Yeah, and I think it's one
- 35:31Speaker 3: of those first films that introduced what would become very
- 35:35Speaker 3: very commonplace in the eighties, both being grounded, horrible realistic way.
- 35:41Speaker 5: Yeah, there's something too. You know, we've watched so I've
- 35:44Speaker 5: always love text Chaine. I'm ask here, but I've watched
- 35:46Speaker 5: it now six times in preparation for our upcoming episode
- 35:51Speaker 5: we're getting ready to record. So I've watched it twice standalone.
- 35:54Speaker 5: I've watched it with all four commentary tracks that are
- 35:57Speaker 5: a like I have the Dark Sky, Yeah four K,
- 36:00Speaker 5: which has all the same commentary tracks as your guys
- 36:02Speaker 5: at least does. And it's kind of like you get
- 36:06Speaker 5: a little bit like at this point the movies kind
- 36:09Speaker 5: of like when it's over, I have to take a
- 36:11Speaker 5: shower again, I'm like, all right, let me go, you know,
- 36:14Speaker 5: wash this off again. Just so I don't know what
- 36:17Speaker 5: it is, man, It's just there's something people have asked
- 36:19Speaker 5: me in the past, like why why I became so
- 36:23Speaker 5: fascinated with that movie, And partially is because when I
- 36:25Speaker 5: was a kid, that was one of the videotapes that
- 36:29Speaker 5: like we found in like my friend's dad's you know,
- 36:32Speaker 5: like office that had no label on it, and you
- 36:36Speaker 5: put it on and I remember.
- 36:38Speaker 3: Is this a movie?
- 36:39Speaker 5: Yeah, You're like taking a chance. You're like, I don't
- 36:43Speaker 5: know what's happening, but you know, you know. And then
- 36:47Speaker 5: what was cool too was growing up in that era
- 36:49Speaker 5: was like I was thirteen when Marcus Nispel's remake came out,
- 36:53Speaker 5: so that wasn't too long after I'd seen the original.
- 36:56Speaker 5: So that's why I also have an attachment to that
- 36:58Speaker 5: one as much. You know, it's so totally totally different.
- 37:02Speaker 3: Yes, what you envision the first one to be when
- 37:05Speaker 3: you're a teenager, right, like when you you've not seen
- 37:08Speaker 3: the film, but you hear the words Texas Chainsaw Masca.
- 37:11Speaker 3: The remaking is exactly what you think going into the
- 37:15Speaker 3: original as a teenager. Well, at least it did for me.
- 37:18Speaker 3: It's like it was violent, it was sexy, and it
- 37:22Speaker 3: wasn't you know, down and dirty and didn't make me
- 37:25Speaker 3: want to have a wash up.
- 37:26Speaker 5: Towards Yeah, but also too like that. I genuinely, man,
- 37:31Speaker 5: I've never been the type of person who gets like overstimulated,
- 37:34Speaker 5: Like if it's not I'm usually pretty high energy wired.
- 37:38Speaker 5: I can tackle a lot at one time. I As
- 37:41Speaker 5: I get older, the third act of Texas Chainsaw Mascer
- 37:44Speaker 5: just gets harder and harder for me to watch and handle,
- 37:47Speaker 5: Like I almost need to pause it halfway through. It's
- 37:51Speaker 5: so much, dude. It is like just an absolute assault
- 37:55Speaker 5: on the senses, on your mind. You're trying to comprehend,
- 37:58Speaker 5: like you're trying to wrap your head around all characters.
- 38:00Speaker 5: People are yelling, you have Grandpa with the hammer. They're
- 38:03Speaker 5: trying to help Grandpa with the hammer. Like there's just
- 38:06Speaker 5: so like somehow this movie that starts miserable continues to
- 38:10Speaker 5: be miserable, just turns into misery. Finally, you're just waiting
- 38:16Speaker 5: for it to end, and this movie is only what
- 38:18Speaker 5: how long is Sex and Change? To ask her like.
- 38:19Speaker 3: Seven eighty minutes? Man, it's really sure that it's the culmination,
- 38:24Speaker 3: right because it's like all her friends are dead, so
- 38:26Speaker 3: you know, no one's come to save her. She's in
- 38:27Speaker 3: the middle of nowhere, she's surrounded by mad people. Yes,
- 38:31Speaker 3: how are you going to get out of this?
- 38:32Speaker 5: It's completely that's terrifying, man. So to kind of pivot
- 38:38Speaker 5: into you know, physical media and stuff like that with
- 38:42Speaker 5: second site films, you know, we you've done so many
- 38:46Speaker 5: bonus features across like you know, on there's actually been
- 38:49Speaker 5: bonus features that we've watched on second site releases that
- 38:52Speaker 5: we had no idea up until we started doing research
- 38:55Speaker 5: for this that were your productions, you know what I mean,
- 38:58Speaker 5: like stuff on Revenge and Upgrade, you know, just for example.
- 39:02Speaker 5: But we even then found your documentary about Joe Tomato.
- 39:07Speaker 3: And yeah, going back, way way back.
- 39:09Speaker 5: Yeah, like the luciofolgy.
- 39:12Speaker 4: Yeah, so that's right up our reality.
- 39:15Speaker 3: Yeah, the same man, because I'm a big euro cult
- 39:17Speaker 3: fan myself, but again that was just me still trying
- 39:20Speaker 3: to navigate getting into the film business. I was like
- 39:24Speaker 3: trying to make actual real movies, like with Cruel Summer,
- 39:28Speaker 3: which you know, trying to get into that side of
- 39:30Speaker 3: the business as a ball lake. And then luckily this
- 39:34Speaker 3: this little side thing I've been doing to start out,
- 39:38Speaker 3: had started to get a bit of momentum and so yeah,
- 39:42Speaker 3: it's just a case of following that. And I had
- 39:43Speaker 3: other labels then contacting me asking me to start doing
- 39:46Speaker 3: stuff for them, which is when the AT eight guys
- 39:48Speaker 3: got involved. And yeah, that was a case of here's
- 39:52Speaker 3: some money, go shoot extras for all these movies, and
- 39:56Speaker 3: me being was like, oh, we need to make like
- 39:58Speaker 3: reature length documentaries, but only having like this much money,
- 40:02Speaker 3: like a fracture like tiny budget, How can we do this?
- 40:05Speaker 3: How can we do this? And yeah, it's not easy.
- 40:10Speaker 5: Well, we've been getting a little bit more insight because
- 40:12Speaker 5: our production company, the podcast Network, we're a part of
- 40:15Speaker 5: someone's favorite productions. Ryan and Will Dotson are heavily you know,
- 40:20Speaker 5: Will is highly respected in the genre community. You know,
- 40:25Speaker 5: both of them have done countless commentaries and like visual
- 40:30Speaker 5: essays like they're very you know, like to see the
- 40:34Speaker 5: company that we're involved with on Terror Vision releases on
- 40:36Speaker 5: separate releases see that it's an incredible thing. So we've
- 40:38Speaker 5: been getting a lot more of the insight as to
- 40:41Speaker 5: the behind the scenes stuff. Yeah, when you when Second
- 40:45Speaker 5: Site says, hey, you know we've acquired I don't know
- 40:48Speaker 5: what's new When Evil Lurks, you know what I mean,
- 40:49Speaker 5: let's what is the process like of sitting down and
- 40:52Speaker 5: going like, okay, what can we add bonus features wise?
- 40:55Speaker 5: Is it just calling people and kind of seeing what
- 40:57Speaker 5: you can build or is there like an actual process
- 40:59Speaker 5: of like let's start piecing things together.
- 41:01Speaker 3: You know, some of it is blind luck, like with
- 41:03Speaker 3: When Evil Lurks, knowing that it's a brand new film,
- 41:06Speaker 3: so realistically new material, it's going to be really easy
- 41:10Speaker 3: to do because everyone's with us, thankfully, and those guys
- 41:13Speaker 3: are very open and their physical media fans themselves. So
- 41:18Speaker 3: with that, when that was like some films are blessings
- 41:21Speaker 3: and some of them are curses. So like the Hitcher
- 41:24Speaker 3: took like fucking five years, that's a curse. When Evil
- 41:29Speaker 3: Looks was just like between acquiring it and it being
- 41:33Speaker 3: on the shelves like eight months, which is like phenomenal
- 41:36Speaker 3: for us. It's just like so quick everything talented place
- 41:39Speaker 3: really easy and the more modern stuff that we do,
- 41:43Speaker 3: we're finding that because obviously talent are around, it's a
- 41:47Speaker 3: lot easier. They're very much open and at our disposal.
- 41:51Speaker 3: Whereas the older films they're getting harder and harder to
- 41:54Speaker 3: do because talent keep dying. It's just the way of life, right.
- 42:00Speaker 3: So yeah, in terms of the rhyme and reason, it
- 42:03Speaker 3: all depends on the film. Every film is its own
- 42:06Speaker 3: project in a sense, so there's no template we can
- 42:09Speaker 3: really follow. It's just there, Okay, well, let's we've got
- 42:12Speaker 3: this film, what can we do? And then break it
- 42:15Speaker 3: down film by film basis.
- 42:18Speaker 5: So when you're doing like I've always preached, the booklets
- 42:21Speaker 5: are my favorite, I'm always on social media encouraging it.
- 42:24Speaker 5: Like so my my social media thing has kind of
- 42:26Speaker 5: become like people call me the bearded booklet guy because
- 42:29Speaker 5: I'm always like, you read your books, you know, please?
- 42:33Speaker 5: And when you're when you're looking for contributors to those,
- 42:36Speaker 5: are you just kind of scouring to see who's talked
- 42:39Speaker 5: about the movie before? Like how how? Because you know
- 42:42Speaker 5: there's I pick up a booklet from any company and
- 42:45Speaker 5: I always see at least one name that I recognize
- 42:48Speaker 5: and then there's usually another I've never even heard of,
- 42:50Speaker 5: and then there's a professor from you know, somewhere in
- 42:53Speaker 5: the world that read. Yeah.
- 42:57Speaker 3: It's like it's finding that balance because obviously the books
- 43:00Speaker 3: we do are quite hefty these days. So it's like
- 43:02Speaker 3: there will be someone who's written about the film before
- 43:06Speaker 3: you this, say, bet, if they've written about it before
- 43:08Speaker 3: and you can read it and you know they're they're
- 43:10Speaker 3: on board with it, it's like, Okay, when you approach
- 43:12Speaker 3: them to write something, you know this is either going
- 43:15Speaker 3: to be a yes or I've already wtten about it.
- 43:17Speaker 3: I don't really want to add anything else. But then
- 43:19Speaker 3: there's yeah, you got to take a gamble, like who
- 43:21Speaker 3: wish writer? Can I approach about this film having no
- 43:24Speaker 3: idea if they've seen the film? So it can be
- 43:26Speaker 3: a bit of a minefield. But my little life hack
- 43:29Speaker 3: for this is letterboxed a lot of writers on there,
- 43:34Speaker 3: so I can see if they like a film, so
- 43:37Speaker 3: I'm not going in completely blind. Good, who do you
- 43:38Speaker 3: want to write about this film? Yeah, at least i'll
- 43:41Speaker 3: know if it Like it did happen to me a
- 43:44Speaker 3: few times, like hey do I write this about this film?
- 43:46Speaker 3: And no, I fucking hate it, like to waste the time. Okay,
- 43:51Speaker 3: I'll come back later with something else.
- 43:53Speaker 5: Okay, Well that makes me want to start writing on letterbox,
- 43:56Speaker 5: just logging, first of all. Second of all, though, like
- 43:59Speaker 5: I just a couple of months ago, I read the
- 44:01Speaker 5: booklet for the Brood and one thing I was really
- 44:04Speaker 5: surprised with was there was a write up in there
- 44:07Speaker 5: and I have to pull the book to remember what
- 44:08Speaker 5: her name was, but to find this incredibly personal essay
- 44:12Speaker 5: about the loss of a parent or a loss of
- 44:15Speaker 5: a child, and it struggles on a relationship in that
- 44:18Speaker 5: and it really like I remember reading that essay and
- 44:22Speaker 5: putting the book down. I still had like one hundred
- 44:24Speaker 5: and twenty pages left of this book anyway, but I
- 44:26Speaker 5: put it down and I was like, holy shit, this
- 44:29Speaker 5: is transcending. Just reading about this movie, like this is
- 44:33Speaker 5: bringing a whole new emotional depth to me as a viewer,
- 44:37Speaker 5: and it made me want to put the movie back
- 44:39Speaker 5: on again and try to kind of find those common
- 44:42Speaker 5: grounds between what I just learned in this essay in
- 44:45Speaker 5: the movie again. So like, I definitely admire you and
- 44:48Speaker 5: the team for finding those things because it's incredible and
- 44:51Speaker 5: I wish more people would would give time to the
- 44:54Speaker 5: booklets because there's incredible, incredible works inside.
- 44:58Speaker 3: Of these sleek man, thank you for picking, because we
- 45:01Speaker 3: do get a bit of flack and it was like
- 45:03Speaker 3: the the internet, so it's not to be trusted or believed,
- 45:06Speaker 3: but you get a lot of oh second woke all
- 45:09Speaker 3: these female writers like well, yeah, because they have interesting
- 45:13Speaker 3: perspectives that I agree an eight year old man writing
- 45:16Speaker 3: about the same film will not have.
- 45:18Speaker 4: It just shows like a deeper level of appreciation to
- 45:20Speaker 4: each one of these films and the releases. I don't know,
- 45:23Speaker 4: I can just wholeheartedly appreciate the time and effort that
- 45:27Speaker 4: gets put into each one of these.
- 45:29Speaker 3: No, thank you man, And yeah, yeah, we do try
- 45:32Speaker 3: and get a big diverse lineup with the books, which
- 45:35Speaker 3: it does cause a bit of friction every now and
- 45:37Speaker 3: then on the old socials, but yeah, it's worth it.
- 45:41Speaker 5: Yeah, the books are the books always get a little
- 45:45Speaker 5: Every time I post about the actual booklet that I'm reading,
- 45:49Speaker 5: the interaction with that post is so different than the
- 45:52Speaker 5: post about the actual movie, you know what I mean?
- 45:55Speaker 5: Like I'm like, wow, does nobody actually pull these out?
- 45:58Speaker 5: Like just fun?
- 46:01Speaker 3: The limited edition? If you're going to read everything.
- 46:03Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, ste if you want to go ahead.
- 46:08Speaker 4: Yeah. So so obviously the legacy of the Texas Chaine
- 46:12Speaker 4: I'm asking her. So it digs into a film that's
- 46:14Speaker 4: already been so heavily analyzed. So was there a new
- 46:18Speaker 4: angle that you were most excited to explore with this documentary?
- 46:23Speaker 3: Uh? Yeah. So for me, it was always getting the
- 46:26Speaker 3: perspective of people who've been inspired by the film. So
- 46:30Speaker 3: I was finding out like the new filmmakers, but also
- 46:33Speaker 3: people who have been involved in the franchise. So getting
- 46:36Speaker 3: people like Adam Marcus and Marcus Nispol again their appreciation
- 46:41Speaker 3: of the film and sometimes, in Marcus's case, disappreciation because
- 46:45Speaker 3: he's not the biggest Texas Chainsaw Masaca fan, which is
- 46:48Speaker 3: interesting when he's the man heading up the remake.
- 46:53Speaker 5: Yeah. When when Marcus Nispell said that he hadn't seen
- 46:57Speaker 5: the movie up until getting the opportunity to do the remake,
- 46:59Speaker 5: I was a little bit. I was a little bit
- 47:01Speaker 5: shocked by that.
- 47:02Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a fine line because you wanted to be
- 47:05Speaker 3: like a homage to a great film, but at the
- 47:08Speaker 3: same time, not everyone loves the film, so it's going
- 47:10Speaker 3: to get that balance and like not everyone's going to
- 47:13Speaker 3: like it, and this is why so some people don't
- 47:15Speaker 3: like it for this reason, because the majority of the
- 47:18Speaker 3: people say, I love it for the X y Z.
- 47:21Speaker 3: But yet having someone on board who wasn't a huge
- 47:24Speaker 3: fan of it did help in the editor for sure,
- 47:27Speaker 3: and wasn't expected. I didn't go in there thinking, oh, yes, Marcus,
- 47:30Speaker 3: he's going to love it. He remade the film. He's
- 47:32Speaker 3: going to say nothing but good things. In my head,
- 47:35Speaker 3: I was thinking, but yeah, when I came back saying, no,
- 47:37Speaker 3: I don't really like the film, it's an interesting view
- 47:40Speaker 3: to be quite a blessing.
- 47:42Speaker 4: Yeah, no, it's it's definitely an interesting viewpoint, you know,
- 47:45Speaker 4: for somebody that spearheaded, you know, the remake to not
- 47:49Speaker 4: really have that I think that same level of association
- 47:52Speaker 4: with the film that most of us have.
- 47:55Speaker 5: But maybe it's really better though.
- 47:56Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly, because otherwise he's just going to go in
- 47:58Speaker 3: and either be in his head like I can't beat Toby,
- 48:00Speaker 3: I can't be Toby then, or then just go out
- 48:04Speaker 3: of his way to carb and copy the first film,
- 48:06Speaker 3: which no one wants. Some people do, but for the
- 48:09Speaker 3: most part, nobody just wants to have a scene see
- 48:12Speaker 3: remake of The Texas change As. So I guess yeah,
- 48:14Speaker 3: having someone with his own idea what the material should
- 48:17Speaker 3: be is a good thing. But yeah, when you're making
- 48:20Speaker 3: a love letter to the original film and having someone
- 48:23Speaker 3: involved in the film not like the film, it can
- 48:27Speaker 3: cause some interesting problems.
- 48:29Speaker 5: I'm sure there's a Reddit thread that's like wishing for
- 48:32Speaker 5: Gus Van Santz the Texas Chainsaw mass you shoot boy,
- 48:37Speaker 5: shot for shot. My favorite part of the documentary is actually,
- 48:40Speaker 5: you know you mentioned it earlier. We just got done.
- 48:42Speaker 5: We interviewed Adam Marcus and absolutely incredible person. It was
- 48:46Speaker 5: so much fun. We went on for three hours with him,
- 48:48Speaker 5: which was unbelievable.
- 48:51Speaker 4: Yeah, that was incredible.
- 48:52Speaker 5: But it was so funny because watching the documentary, my
- 48:55Speaker 5: my wife was kind of hanging out in the room
- 48:57Speaker 5: and when when when Adam Marcus came out, I was like, oh,
- 49:00Speaker 5: you know, that's who we just interviewed. And then twenty
- 49:03Speaker 5: minutes later she's like, he has talked so much to
- 49:05Speaker 5: his co writer, left, I got.
- 49:10Speaker 3: Places to beat man, I got dates, get home.
- 49:15Speaker 5: She disappeared like halfway through the movie and she never came.
- 49:20Speaker 3: My time's up. I'm out to say.
- 49:25Speaker 4: I can appreciate because I feel like what you see
- 49:29Speaker 4: is what you get with him. And I feel like
- 49:31Speaker 4: that that interview segment, like when he would show up
- 49:34Speaker 4: in him, I'm like, that is him to a t,
- 49:37Speaker 4: Like that's that's what we got. So it's it's really
- 49:40Speaker 4: like special to uh, you know, he's very authentic in
- 49:42Speaker 4: net regards for sure.
- 49:44Speaker 3: Yeah, And I know he's a lot of horror fans
- 49:47Speaker 3: hate him because he made Jason Goes to Hell. But
- 49:50Speaker 3: I love the guy and I love Jason goes to Hell,
- 49:52Speaker 3: so same with him. Whatsoever. He's like when the sweetest
- 49:57Speaker 3: guys and people get off there high horse and set
- 50:01Speaker 3: their opinions of Jason aside, hopefully they realize he's actually
- 50:04Speaker 3: a fine filmmaker.
- 50:06Speaker 5: Yeah, oh yeah, he was incredible. I just actually just
- 50:09Speaker 5: talked to him because they're premiering the Heart of Darkness
- 50:12Speaker 5: documentary the town right next to Me City, So I
- 50:16Speaker 5: hit him up and I was like, oh, you're gonna
- 50:17Speaker 5: it was actually it's actually premiering at my brother in
- 50:19Speaker 5: law's brewery. So I messaged out of Marcus and I
- 50:23Speaker 5: was like, oh, I just found out. I was like,
- 50:24Speaker 5: I'm going to come hang out, and he was like
- 50:26Speaker 5: he was like, dude, I can't wait to see you, Like,
- 50:28Speaker 5: I'll bring you some stuff, like I'll buy you a drink,
- 50:30Speaker 5: will hang out. I was like, what is this?
- 50:35Speaker 3: After the documentary sent me like a cap Jesus goes
- 50:38Speaker 3: to Hell cap like a T shirt? Thanks man?
- 50:42Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, man. So I want to move on to
- 50:46Speaker 5: another huge project that you were a part of, the
- 50:48Speaker 5: Found footage phenomenon, which massive. I remember this. I remember
- 50:54Speaker 5: I originally watched it on Shutter. There was a lot
- 50:56Speaker 5: of talk about it when it came out on Shutter
- 50:57Speaker 5: because finally found footage fans were getting like a good documentary,
- 51:02Speaker 5: but also to to get a Blu ray release through
- 51:05Speaker 5: the Vinegar Syndrome partner label with Shutter, That's an incredible feeling.
- 51:09Speaker 5: And I'm not the biggest found footage guy, even though
- 51:12Speaker 5: Cannibal Holocaust is my favorite I do. I do kind
- 51:15Speaker 5: of like pick and choose found footage RUMs I actually
- 51:19Speaker 5: dive into because you know, it's a little bit of
- 51:22Speaker 5: a tough subgenre for me because.
- 51:23Speaker 3: It's all just so many of them.
- 51:26Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, so many. But I have to say, man,
- 51:29Speaker 5: that documentary one, it made me want to watch more
- 51:34Speaker 5: like it. It actually drove me to be like, Okay,
- 51:36Speaker 5: there's some because like I have the last broadcast that
- 51:38Speaker 5: was made here in New Jersey, so I have a
- 51:40Speaker 5: little bit of a personal, you know, connection with that.
- 51:43Speaker 5: But me, Steve was kind of yelling at me last
- 51:45Speaker 5: night because I had never seen ghost Watch. Yeah, I'm sorry, man,
- 51:53Speaker 5: I don't know what happened. It just I missed. And
- 51:56Speaker 5: then the one on one Films limited edition is like gone,
- 51:59Speaker 5: It's like can't find it anywhere to buy it. So,
- 52:03Speaker 5: but you know, the passion for that subgenre is in
- 52:07Speaker 5: every single shot of that documentary, right, It's it's incredible.
- 52:12Speaker 5: What was the experience like making that and I know
- 52:14Speaker 5: that you co directed that, and what was it like
- 52:17Speaker 5: to not only see it on Shutter, you know, the
- 52:20Speaker 5: leading horror streaming network, but then be able to actually
- 52:23Speaker 5: hold a physical release through a company like Vinegar Syndrome.
- 52:27Speaker 3: Yeah, so we I was working on Lake Mungo. Actually,
- 52:31Speaker 3: we were working on that, and I'd known Sarah for
- 52:34Speaker 3: a number of years as we've been working together at
- 52:36Speaker 3: One O one when I was helping with them, and yeah,
- 52:40Speaker 3: she found out we were doing Lake Mungo. But it's
- 52:42Speaker 3: towards the end I'd already like wrapped all the production
- 52:45Speaker 3: side of things that I said, Oh, I was hoping
- 52:47Speaker 3: to make this like little documentary on found footage. I
- 52:49Speaker 3: was like, wait, that's a really fucking good idea. How
- 52:52Speaker 3: about we just go own separate ways and do an
- 52:55Speaker 3: actual feature documentary because I wasn't the bigest found footage
- 53:00Speaker 3: famly either, to be honest with you, because it's like
- 53:03Speaker 3: so many of them and there's only so many hours
- 53:05Speaker 3: in the day. But as I started reading more about
- 53:07Speaker 3: it and looking at more and more, it's like, oh yeah,
- 53:09Speaker 3: it's kind of like the modern equivalent of the slasher film,
- 53:12Speaker 3: where in the eighties everyone hated slash films because it's
- 53:14Speaker 3: so prolific and nobody cared about them. They were like
- 53:17Speaker 3: the lowest common denominator, and found footage kind of became
- 53:21Speaker 3: that towards like the end of the notes in the tens.
- 53:25Speaker 3: So for me, it was interesting to look at a
- 53:28Speaker 3: genre that form out of favor, which ironic because it's
- 53:31Speaker 3: like our most newest, our newest subgenre. I guess it
- 53:35Speaker 3: kind of would be, but it's like it was a fad.
- 53:38Speaker 3: It's like it was just it shined. It's like, oh
- 53:41Speaker 3: my god e won those found footage and then everyone
- 53:42Speaker 3: hated found footage be included, and so it was like, yeah,
- 53:46Speaker 3: let's take a look at it. That's crazy. How did
- 53:49Speaker 3: it blow up and then disappear? But then looking at it,
- 53:52Speaker 3: it's like, no, it's it's kind of been here for
- 53:54Speaker 3: a while and it's still here. So looking at it
- 53:57Speaker 3: as kind of like a third wheel, I guess, because
- 54:01Speaker 3: like Sarah really loves found footage, like she like she
- 54:05Speaker 3: will die on that hills, like it's one of the
- 54:07Speaker 3: best subgenres know to man, I is it?
- 54:10Speaker 4: And so.
- 54:12Speaker 3: There's a lot of skepticism in there, which is mostly me.
- 54:15Speaker 3: So the historical elements I love. I was like, I
- 54:18Speaker 3: wanted to explore where it came from, and she's like,
- 54:21Speaker 3: but the technical side, like what makes it so cool?
- 54:24Speaker 3: That's what she wants to follow. So there's like this
- 54:26Speaker 3: is a parallel sort of story being told throughout that,
- 54:29Speaker 3: which is like the history and also what found footage is.
- 54:33Speaker 3: And so yeah, when we're developing in it, we're like, well,
- 54:36Speaker 3: what can we do with a documentary? Though it's about
- 54:39Speaker 3: found footage movies, which at that point in time were
- 54:41Speaker 3: not very fondly looked at. So it's like, yeah, who's
- 54:44Speaker 3: gonna buy this thing? Like well this shudder and so
- 54:48Speaker 3: it was like, well, yeah, let's let's make the thing first,
- 54:52Speaker 3: and then we'll ask backwards then go to shut and
- 54:55Speaker 3: say hey, you've got this documentary, you want to take
- 54:57Speaker 3: a look, And so that could have backfired very badly,
- 55:01Speaker 3: but luckily, like Sam much Shudder was like, oh shit,
- 55:05Speaker 3: foun footage is one of my favorite like subgenres as well,
- 55:08Speaker 3: so he's like, I'd love to check this out. So
- 55:10Speaker 3: from there it was very straightforward, like Sam, Sam's in
- 55:13Speaker 3: because he's a big family of Horran found footage and
- 55:17Speaker 3: so but then obviously it's like yeah, but now it's
- 55:19Speaker 3: just on shutter. Not everyone has a shudder a prescription,
- 55:23Speaker 3: so it's like, who's going to see this film now?
- 55:24Speaker 3: And would ever get a shiny disc? And then yeah,
- 55:27Speaker 3: last October I want to say no, we did in
- 55:33Speaker 3: October four. Last October just from OCN and Vinegar Syndrome
- 55:39Speaker 3: going touch and say hey, we're working on a physical
- 55:41Speaker 3: release of the foundootg phenomenon. It's like, oh shit, you
- 55:46Speaker 3: guys gonna give that thing a disc release because we
- 55:48Speaker 3: just a documentary documentary. So He's like, oh shit, that's
- 55:52Speaker 3: that's amazing, and so yeah, it was a total surprise,
- 55:55Speaker 3: to be honest with you, a very pleasant surprise. But yeah,
- 55:59Speaker 3: and Vinea Syndrome are amazing because obviously I'm a big
- 56:02Speaker 3: cop film fan myself, and the stuff they've been doing
- 56:04Speaker 3: with the old Martial Arts movies and Cynthia roth Rock
- 56:07Speaker 3: and also the Italian stuff that they've been putting out
- 56:10Speaker 3: is just like awesome. And so yeah, having Yosian guys
- 56:14Speaker 3: handle found which phenomenon was Yeah, the dream pairing. I thought.
- 56:19Speaker 5: So you're saying you didn't buy Mac and Me on
- 56:21Speaker 5: four K justin.
- 56:23Speaker 3: Sending me a copy. Yes, I didn't have to buy it.
- 56:28Speaker 5: I did buy it, and I love it. It looks fantastic.
- 56:31Speaker 5: Shout out to those guys.
- 56:32Speaker 3: For macame stand So no, no, no shade for Mac
- 56:36Speaker 3: and Me.
- 56:37Speaker 5: Dude, we're on the same look, We're like Nick, but
- 56:40Speaker 5: we're all in on Mac and Me. Yeah, that's great, man,
- 56:44Speaker 5: This is.
- 56:47Speaker 4: So obviously. I mean, I think, as we know, phone
- 56:51Speaker 4: footage is often either dismissed or deeply embraced. I know
- 56:55Speaker 4: you mentioned the Blair Witch project was pretty impactful for you.
- 57:00Speaker 4: Were there other films growing up, or like films that
- 57:04Speaker 4: really inspired you, like either leading up to this documentary
- 57:08Speaker 4: or just ones that stand out to you just you know,
- 57:11Speaker 4: in your time discovering various movies.
- 57:14Speaker 3: Yeah, so man By Dog was a huge film for
- 57:18Speaker 3: me back in my high school days, which not many
- 57:21Speaker 3: people remember now, but back in back in the day,
- 57:24Speaker 3: Man Bites Dog was a big thing, and I was
- 57:26Speaker 3: very much one of my first exposures to the found
- 57:30Speaker 3: footage style. You know it some mockumentary, but other than that,
- 57:35Speaker 3: I mean post Blair Witch, Like when you think you
- 57:39Speaker 3: think there's gonna be an explosion in found footage movies
- 57:41Speaker 3: and it's nothing tumbleweeds. You just had got people like
- 57:46Speaker 3: Romero doing Darry the Dead and had Department. Here was
- 57:50Speaker 3: these giants of cinema trying to tabble with found footage.
- 57:54Speaker 3: But he's still trying to find his feet. But then
- 57:56Speaker 3: panelmal activity. I was a big fan of that period
- 57:59Speaker 3: because like I had fifteen grand and he spent that
- 58:02Speaker 3: mostly ren Vane's house to film this thing in it
- 58:06Speaker 3: like the filmmaker sided music, respect man, their play, like
- 58:11Speaker 3: how you had the vision to see that through was impressive.
- 58:15Speaker 3: But other than that, Wreck would probably be one of
- 58:18Speaker 3: the biggest found footage influences for me, absolutely, I don't know.
- 58:22Speaker 3: Okay okay, oh Wreck Okay and Bake Mungo. So yeah,
- 58:27Speaker 3: that's what like two thousand and seven to two thousand
- 58:29Speaker 3: and nine period, So it found itself during that phase.
- 58:34Speaker 4: I remember a paranormal activity just like the that very
- 58:38Speaker 4: specific style of marketing was so effective that it just
- 58:43Speaker 4: everyone was talking about it, like everyone wanted to get
- 58:45Speaker 4: out and see it. And and maybe it didn't hit
- 58:48Speaker 4: quite the same highs as obviously the blair Witch Project,
- 58:51Speaker 4: because I think that that's more of a cultural phenomenon.
- 58:54Speaker 3: But I think even though it's like ten years apart,
- 58:56Speaker 3: I think the world had moved on, like so the
- 59:00Speaker 3: structure was so different, Like the Internet was far more
- 59:03Speaker 3: prevalent than it was when blair Witch came out, so
- 59:06Speaker 3: they still had the old school methods of promotion as
- 59:09Speaker 3: well as like the revolutionary internet stuff he was doing,
- 59:12Speaker 3: but they had to go and do all these interviews
- 59:13Speaker 3: like on radio, on TV, newspapers. Was by the end
- 59:18Speaker 3: of the Nords. That's that it was like phase out
- 59:21Speaker 3: that everything was online. So these guys got to tour
- 59:25Speaker 3: the world with blair Witch with Panormal Activity was like,
- 59:27Speaker 3: oh no, I just click this button and it's out
- 59:30Speaker 3: to the world. So analogue nature and the digital nature,
- 59:34Speaker 3: I think is probably why Panel and Activity did very
- 59:37Speaker 3: well but didn't get to the giddy heights of Blue Witch.
- 59:40Speaker 5: Well you still see that. Like, I just thought about
- 59:43Speaker 5: Paranormal Activity the other day because one of the marketing
- 59:46Speaker 5: for Together was like analyzing. They analyzed people's pupils like
- 59:52Speaker 5: at certain scenes. Oh yeah, and they like turned that
- 59:56Speaker 5: into a marketing thing, and I was like, oh, that's
- 59:58Speaker 5: very because I remember paranormal activity the big was like
- 1:00:00Speaker 5: the night vision and yeah, you know, and that's I
- 1:00:05Speaker 5: don't think that's as effective anymore because it becomes overused
- 1:00:09Speaker 5: and people just don't fall for the yeah you know,
- 1:00:11Speaker 5: the marketing anymore. But Together, I feel like it kind
- 1:00:14Speaker 5: of pops up in these little bits.
- 1:00:16Speaker 3: You know.
- 1:00:16Speaker 5: I missed the days of like Blair Ridge Project, of
- 1:00:18Speaker 5: having like a website that you just had to click
- 1:00:20Speaker 5: around on and discover something. Yeah, you know, there's those
- 1:00:24Speaker 5: were such cool. Well, we look back at it fondly
- 1:00:27Speaker 5: because we were part of it. But being a nineteen
- 1:00:30Speaker 5: year old kid in today's generation, I'm sure it's not
- 1:00:31Speaker 5: appealing to like, all right, let me pull out my MacBook,
- 1:00:33Speaker 5: let me go to this website, let me watch a
- 1:00:36Speaker 5: web file of this video me.
- 1:00:38Speaker 3: You know, for them now, I guess like Smile probably
- 1:00:41Speaker 3: the big horror film that kind of did some marketing
- 1:00:45Speaker 3: genius where they just like get someone in the background,
- 1:00:47Speaker 3: like a baseball game or something going in the shop
- 1:00:49Speaker 3: windows weird. So yeah, so that now the kids have
- 1:00:53Speaker 3: to have it in real life on the marketing in
- 1:00:55Speaker 3: my face for real.
- 1:00:57Speaker 5: I fell for the Weapons marketing because they did Weapons
- 1:01:02Speaker 5: has been doing all kinds of cool stuff. Obviously they're
- 1:01:04Speaker 5: trying to really, like I feel like they're trying to
- 1:01:06Speaker 5: get people to stop talking about how Barbarian doesn't have
- 1:01:08Speaker 5: a physical release, and they're like, hey, new thing that
- 1:01:12Speaker 5: Nat Creiger is doing. But I was at work one
- 1:01:15Speaker 5: day and I saw that new line was live on Instagram.
- 1:01:18Speaker 5: So I'm like, oh, let me click on this, and
- 1:01:20Speaker 5: it was just like three kids in a classroom really countdown,
- 1:01:24Speaker 5: and it was that when I when I clicked on it,
- 1:01:26Speaker 5: it was sixteen minutes and I was like, it was
- 1:01:28Speaker 5: counting down. I was like, all right, well, let me.
- 1:01:30Speaker 5: I stood on it for a minute, and I was like,
- 1:01:31Speaker 5: all right, let me go back. So five minutes later,
- 1:01:33Speaker 5: I went back and the timer nothing changed. The timer
- 1:01:35Speaker 5: just went down five minutes. And then I went back
- 1:01:38Speaker 5: ten minutes later and I watched a final minute and
- 1:01:40Speaker 5: then it just ended, and I was like, I don't.
- 1:01:45Speaker 3: Thanks, thanks weapons, but like I.
- 1:01:50Speaker 5: Was intrigued for some reason. I was like, I kept
- 1:01:52Speaker 5: going back to it.
- 1:01:52Speaker 3: I'm like, yeah, I don't want to miss out what
- 1:01:54Speaker 3: I'm going to miss out on? Oh? Nothing, Yeah, she is.
- 1:01:59Speaker 5: When you when you finished Found Footage phenomena and that
- 1:02:02Speaker 5: was out, that was gone. Did you like, did you
- 1:02:06Speaker 5: come out of that liking Found Footage a little bit more? Oh?
- 1:02:08Speaker 3: Absolutely?
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:02:12Speaker 3: For me, it was more of the kind of like
- 1:02:15Speaker 3: what slashes were in the eighties. It was like a
- 1:02:18Speaker 3: tool that filmmakers with very little resources could use to
- 1:02:22Speaker 3: establish themselves in a in a business that isn't you know,
- 1:02:27Speaker 3: the easiest to get into, And so for me, it
- 1:02:30Speaker 3: was very much a new appreciation of what it can
- 1:02:33Speaker 3: do for creatives as well as like fans get to
- 1:02:36Speaker 3: enjoy hopefully a good film, but at least for the
- 1:02:41Speaker 3: creatives that could demonstrate what they can do with very
- 1:02:44Speaker 3: little resources. Which I didn't really think about when I
- 1:02:47Speaker 3: was in my late twenties, just being angry that they
- 1:02:51Speaker 3: were making ghost films over and over again, go to
- 1:02:55Speaker 3: back to gore Man one slashes again.
- 1:02:57Speaker 5: Yeap, Oh my god. Well, I feel like that's it's
- 1:03:01Speaker 5: easy to do that with a lot of things from
- 1:03:02Speaker 5: like the outside perspective, to just push it off as like,
- 1:03:06Speaker 5: oh whatever. Meanwhile, there's some guy out there just working
- 1:03:09Speaker 5: his ass off trying to get on the ground. You know,
- 1:03:13Speaker 5: it's really hard to like sometimes I watch movies and
- 1:03:15Speaker 5: I'm like, you know, it just actually I've been diving
- 1:03:19Speaker 5: into the Mario Baba set from Screen Factory, and as
- 1:03:22Speaker 5: I watch each movie like three four times with the commentaries,
- 1:03:25Speaker 5: the movies get better because I learned more, you know. So,
- 1:03:28Speaker 5: like I was just telling Steve before you came on,
- 1:03:30Speaker 5: like my third watch of Kill Baby Kill, I like
- 1:03:33Speaker 5: finally like.
- 1:03:34Speaker 4: Really, yeah, finally clicks after after you.
- 1:03:39Speaker 5: Learn how like Baba ran out of money, the cast
- 1:03:41Speaker 5: and crew wasn't getting paid, You're like, oh my god.
- 1:03:46Speaker 5: And then even like the you know, Megan Navarro who's
- 1:03:50Speaker 5: been in you know a ton of stuff like her commentary,
- 1:03:52Speaker 5: I learned so much I was like when it was over,
- 1:03:55Speaker 5: I was like, I feel like I'll listen to the
- 1:03:56Speaker 5: commentary track again just to just to comprehend all the
- 1:04:00Speaker 5: you know, but I also love I So you know,
- 1:04:04Speaker 5: we watch a lot of commentary tracks. That's that's what
- 1:04:06Speaker 5: we do, and you know, we're hoping, we're hoping to
- 1:04:08Speaker 5: one day contribute, you know, to that. So every every
- 1:04:12Speaker 5: commentary that I watch, I'm learning and I'm figuring out
- 1:04:15Speaker 5: what do I like, what don't I like what? And
- 1:04:17Speaker 5: there's this balance between like you find these hyper analytical
- 1:04:21Speaker 5: commentary tracks that are almost like you could separate it
- 1:04:24Speaker 5: from the movie and listen to it as a podcast
- 1:04:26Speaker 5: and it would be fine. Megan Navarro's on Kill Baby
- 1:04:31Speaker 5: Kill was like there were moments where she would pause
- 1:04:33Speaker 5: and she'd just be like, oh, look at a shot,
- 1:04:35Speaker 5: Like look how cool that is? And I'm like, oh, yes,
- 1:04:38Speaker 5: I'm right there watching it with a friend, you know
- 1:04:41Speaker 5: what I mean, Like you're watching No.
- 1:04:44Speaker 3: It's a fine balance, right because you you are asking
- 1:04:47Speaker 3: some to spend like an hour and a half to
- 1:04:48Speaker 3: two hours listening to someone speak. So yeah, and if
- 1:04:53Speaker 3: you if it's an overly academic when it get a
- 1:04:55Speaker 3: bit dry and like, okay, yeah, it's this big interaction
- 1:05:02Speaker 3: in there.
- 1:05:03Speaker 5: We had the first episode we ever did with the
- 1:05:05Speaker 5: show when we launched the show, we did Spider Labyrinth,
- 1:05:08Speaker 5: which is you know, I still say that we contributed
- 1:05:11Speaker 5: to a lot of the severing sales of that disc
- 1:05:14Speaker 5: you know, I just I hope we did, you know.
- 1:05:17Speaker 5: But the commentary track was with Ryan and Will whose
- 1:05:22Speaker 5: network we're now on, And I remember when it was over,
- 1:05:24Speaker 5: I was like, yeah, I learned a lot like that
- 1:05:26Speaker 5: was great, and they're like, dude, we had nothing to
- 1:05:28Speaker 5: go on. They're like, there's no info about this movie.
- 1:05:30Speaker 5: So at a point, you know you're you're getting analytical
- 1:05:33Speaker 5: because your perceptions and kind of like your studies are
- 1:05:37Speaker 5: the only thing that you can use to fill in information.
- 1:05:40Speaker 5: And that's super hard, Like when you find these movies
- 1:05:43Speaker 5: that are really obscure, to find somebody who's able to
- 1:05:46Speaker 5: create an interesting hour and a half long discussion about
- 1:05:50Speaker 5: the movie gets really really tough.
- 1:05:51Speaker 3: To do, no for sure, And when we look at commissions,
- 1:05:54Speaker 3: we do try and do pays because it just makes
- 1:05:58Speaker 3: life easier for everyone. They have people to bounce off
- 1:06:01Speaker 3: for the viewer can have someone to bounce off as well,
- 1:06:05Speaker 3: like you have more than one voice filling the room
- 1:06:07Speaker 3: for an extended period of time. So yeah, so it's
- 1:06:10Speaker 3: an art form in and of itself, as I'm sure
- 1:06:12Speaker 3: you guys can appreciate. Nobody just want to see me
- 1:06:15Speaker 3: and yeah, this scene here was a shot in the
- 1:06:20Speaker 3: fall of nineteen seventy two. Yeah, no, dude, energy, give
- 1:06:27Speaker 3: me something.
- 1:06:28Speaker 5: I literally just experienced that with the commentary track for
- 1:06:31Speaker 5: I randomly put on Jason Takes Manhattan, and it was
- 1:06:34Speaker 5: a commentary track with the director and the whole entire
- 1:06:37Speaker 5: time he's going, Okay, yeah, this shot here, you know,
- 1:06:40Speaker 5: we shot on a stage, but then this shot here
- 1:06:42Speaker 5: was actually on the boat. And then he kept doing
- 1:06:45Speaker 5: there's like there's always this like I don't even know
- 1:06:50Speaker 5: how to describe it, but there he'd be like, yeah,
- 1:06:52Speaker 5: you know, we you know, the fact that we have
- 1:06:55Speaker 5: a POV and we're making you think that it's a
- 1:06:58Speaker 5: Jason creeping up, but it's actually the dog. You know,
- 1:07:00Speaker 5: we thought this was a good way to build suspense.
- 1:07:03Speaker 5: And I'm like, you mean that thing that that people
- 1:07:04Speaker 5: have been doing for twenty years before you Yeah, he's
- 1:07:11Speaker 5: like he's like, we thought, you know, we built a
- 1:07:13Speaker 5: lot of suspense and then surprise, it's the dog and
- 1:07:16Speaker 5: you're like, okay, yeah, nobody is a.
- 1:07:18Speaker 3: Toll dog six foot tall dog.
- 1:07:20Speaker 4: Okay, Well, wasn't it? I think Chris? Wasn't it on
- 1:07:24Speaker 4: the deep dive that we did for Pet Cemetery Too?
- 1:07:26Speaker 4: That episode we didn't have a ton of material to
- 1:07:29Speaker 4: go off of for that one, wasn't it?
- 1:07:31Speaker 5: Yeah? Pet Secretary Too was tough because it was gosh,
- 1:07:36Speaker 5: I'm forgetting his name. He's incredible who he He moderated
- 1:07:40Speaker 5: the conversation with with now all of a sudden blanking
- 1:07:44Speaker 5: on all with Mary Lambert, and he was trying so
- 1:07:47Speaker 5: hard to like get her to really like start revealing
- 1:07:51Speaker 5: some stuff or like talk about it, but everything she
- 1:07:52Speaker 5: would bring up was like she'd be like, oh, yeah,
- 1:07:55Speaker 5: you know, this was you know, yeah, we shot this
- 1:07:57Speaker 5: outside and like it was fun, and you're like, let's say, okay,
- 1:08:01Speaker 5: I don't know what the you know. The point of
- 1:08:04Speaker 5: our show is like we want to dissect the commentary
- 1:08:07Speaker 5: and create our discussions based on what we learned in
- 1:08:10Speaker 5: that right. So in order for us to do that
- 1:08:13Speaker 5: in a good way, we have to learn things that
- 1:08:15Speaker 5: most people who don't watch commentaries would not know, right,
- 1:08:18Speaker 5: So we have to take that when when a commentary
- 1:08:21Speaker 5: track is just giving me blanket statements about production, it
- 1:08:25Speaker 5: doesn't create anything like interesting or new or any any discussion.
- 1:08:30Speaker 5: So at that point it gets really difficult on our
- 1:08:32Speaker 5: end too. We love pet cemetery too. I want to
- 1:08:35Speaker 5: talk about pet cemetery too. And I feel like with
- 1:08:38Speaker 5: that episode, it was just enough that we were one
- 1:08:40Speaker 5: of the few people on the internet that was like, hey,
- 1:08:43Speaker 5: we're going to deep dive into this movie with very
- 1:08:45Speaker 5: little assistance from Mary Lambert.
- 1:08:48Speaker 4: Phil we had to dig deep for that one.
- 1:08:52Speaker 3: But I'm a pet sEMG two stand myself. So God,
- 1:08:55Speaker 3: Dann and Mary spilled beans. What did you get them
- 1:08:59Speaker 3: breast that dog?
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: Yeah, we did.
- 1:09:05Speaker 3: That's a real dog, right, That's like that one that
- 1:09:07Speaker 3: that was real.
- 1:09:09Speaker 5: Yeah. I think we went on. We went on for
- 1:09:10Speaker 5: like twenty minutes alone about the superimposed like photos of
- 1:09:14Speaker 5: who died at the credit ending mine. Yeah, that was
- 1:09:20Speaker 5: that was a tough one for us. You know, Luckily,
- 1:09:22Speaker 5: we've been very lucky for like the movies we've chosen
- 1:09:24Speaker 5: have given us a pretty bountiful information. But it was
- 1:09:27Speaker 5: sort of the same with the Burning because Tony Mayleem's
- 1:09:32Speaker 5: commentary was was good, but it was almost like from
- 1:09:36Speaker 5: a guy who is now so separated from that movie
- 1:09:39Speaker 5: he doesn't remember, you know, like yeah.
- 1:09:43Speaker 4: Yeah, because it was just well it was like his
- 1:09:46Speaker 4: first rewatch and I don't even know how long like
- 1:09:50Speaker 4: before he did the commentary, So it's like he's almost
- 1:09:53Speaker 4: in the same position we are, where it's like he's
- 1:09:55Speaker 4: kind of like rediscovering this film after not watching it
- 1:09:59Speaker 4: for a number of years. Yeah.
- 1:10:01Speaker 3: Yeah, but actually, really before jumping on here, I was
- 1:10:03Speaker 3: just listening to the commentary for the Florida Project that
- 1:10:07Speaker 3: we've had done recently with with Sean and the co
- 1:10:11Speaker 3: writer and the DP, and yeah, Sean the nights like, yeah,
- 1:10:14Speaker 3: I've seen this movie in ten years, other than like
- 1:10:17Speaker 3: when he was watching it silently doing the color grade.
- 1:10:19Speaker 3: He's like, I'm not actually sat down and watched the
- 1:10:21Speaker 3: film in ten years.
- 1:10:23Speaker 5: Well, I feel like I feel like that's kind of
- 1:10:25Speaker 5: I can understand that, because I never like it would
- 1:10:28Speaker 5: be torture if you told me, like, hey, you have
- 1:10:30Speaker 5: to sit down and fully listen to one of your
- 1:10:32Speaker 5: episodes of your podcast, I would be tearing. I'd be
- 1:10:36Speaker 5: tearing myself apart I wouldn't be tearing, you know, like Steve,
- 1:10:39Speaker 5: I'd be I'd be loving listening to you. I'd be
- 1:10:41Speaker 5: loving our guests. But me, i'd be like just the
- 1:10:44Speaker 5: worst thing I've ever done in my life.
- 1:10:47Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, And I guess that's what we probably
- 1:10:51Speaker 3: keep forgetting ourselves as fans. It's like, these guys are
- 1:10:54Speaker 3: onto the next best thing, man, They've that's behind Now
- 1:10:57Speaker 3: I'm onto this. It was like I want to know
- 1:10:59Speaker 3: all the details. I can't remember you spoke to me
- 1:11:02Speaker 3: ten years ago.
- 1:11:03Speaker 4: Yeah, right.
- 1:11:05Speaker 5: But I feel like it's kind of that way now
- 1:11:06Speaker 5: in physical media, like we were I think we were
- 1:11:08Speaker 5: talking about Ignite Films doing Reanimator the other day, and
- 1:11:11Speaker 5: I'm like, I feel like that's already gone, Like it's
- 1:11:13Speaker 5: so like people have already moved on. Same with the
- 1:11:16Speaker 5: Beyond from Grindhouse. Oh yeah, true, this stuff that was
- 1:11:20Speaker 5: like so prevalent for like a month, and then now
- 1:11:22Speaker 5: all of a sudden, it's like now it's dust on
- 1:11:24Speaker 5: the shelf, people about it anymore. Yeah, it's awful, man,
- 1:11:27Speaker 5: Like how quickly you move on from it?
- 1:11:30Speaker 3: But I guess it's a double edged sword as well,
- 1:11:32Speaker 3: because these films are forty years old, fifty years old now,
- 1:11:35Speaker 3: and this is arguably the fifth sixth time you probably
- 1:11:39Speaker 3: bought Reanimated or or The Beyond. Like, ah, she's another
- 1:11:43Speaker 3: addition to go with the twelve other copies I have
- 1:11:47Speaker 3: The Beyond? What the fuck? What was that? Just me?
- 1:11:51Speaker 5: But no, I do feel like second sight though. I
- 1:11:52Speaker 5: feel like you guys have this like longevity. Like when
- 1:11:57Speaker 5: I think about if I'm not in the room and
- 1:11:59Speaker 5: somebody asked me, like, oh, why do you collect physical medium,
- 1:12:01Speaker 5: my mind instantly goes to like Drive or Dawn of
- 1:12:05Speaker 5: the Dead, Uh, you know, the Witch, like some of
- 1:12:08Speaker 5: these that now have become a little bit rare or like, yeah,
- 1:12:11Speaker 5: the guests, like these movies don't have like The Witch
- 1:12:15Speaker 5: got a studio release outside of the second site release.
- 1:12:18Speaker 5: Drive is just getting shitty steel book after shitty steel
- 1:12:22Speaker 5: book over and over and over again, which thank you
- 1:12:26Speaker 5: at Second Safe for not doingues. Oh god, as Screen
- 1:12:32Speaker 5: Factory just announced their fifth like today, literally just now,
- 1:12:36Speaker 5: they just announced Child's Play four K on Steel Book,
- 1:12:39Speaker 5: So you know it's fun. It's always fun.
- 1:12:45Speaker 3: Yeah, So like maybe yes, this case of the films
- 1:12:47Speaker 3: not being as exposed, I guess, and stuff like with Drive,
- 1:12:52Speaker 3: because they studio films in the sense we're lucky in
- 1:12:56Speaker 3: the UK they aren't wrapped by huge studio and depending
- 1:13:02Speaker 3: on which country you're in, studios have definite thoughts. So
- 1:13:06Speaker 3: like lines Gate, US will be like fuck, no, I'm
- 1:13:09Speaker 3: not a licensing anything to anyone, But in the UK
- 1:13:11Speaker 3: they'm like, yeah, yeah, fine, it's the UK. Yeah, So
- 1:13:15Speaker 3: I guess it's luck for US. I guess in the
- 1:13:19Speaker 3: sense that the UK they just don't care about the
- 1:13:23Speaker 3: market as much as they do elsewhere, espectally a little
- 1:13:27Speaker 3: gap for us, because then we can come in and
- 1:13:29Speaker 3: give these films a big, swanky release that they won't
- 1:13:32Speaker 3: get elsewhere.
- 1:13:34Speaker 4: Done to the Dead is a prime example, like yeah,
- 1:13:36Speaker 4: we can't, we don't, we don't have a proper US release.
- 1:13:40Speaker 4: But like in my mind, I feel like Second Site
- 1:13:43Speaker 4: has released the definitive version of this where I don't
- 1:13:47Speaker 4: feel the desire to get a US release.
- 1:13:50Speaker 3: Yeah, that's just blind block as well, because the producer
- 1:13:53Speaker 3: the police just wanted crazy money for the US territory,
- 1:13:56Speaker 3: so well, no one's going to be like, yeah, I'll
- 1:13:58Speaker 3: give you a million for the rights, and like no,
- 1:14:02Speaker 3: I don't think that's ever going to get a US
- 1:14:04Speaker 3: release purely because the producer wants too much money, but
- 1:14:07Speaker 3: because people don't want to put it out. The expectations
- 1:14:11Speaker 3: is just in space way, Yeah, well how do you want?
- 1:14:16Speaker 5: How do you one up it? I mean, like, how
- 1:14:18Speaker 5: do you like?
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: What?
- 1:14:20Speaker 5: I think? I think? It was like rumored that a
- 1:14:21Speaker 5: company was close to getting US rights. In our little
- 1:14:25Speaker 5: group chat, I was like, what can you do differently
- 1:14:29Speaker 5: than what second site has already done? Like you're never
- 1:14:32Speaker 5: going to be able to reach that that height, Like
- 1:14:34Speaker 5: you're going to give what the same transfers on the
- 1:14:36Speaker 5: same release, and like the Blu rays are going to
- 1:14:39Speaker 5: be uh you know, like region compatible now, which most
- 1:14:43Speaker 5: of us serious collectors have region free players anyway, so
- 1:14:45Speaker 5: that doesn't matter. You know, you're getting the novel, You're
- 1:14:48Speaker 5: getting twelve essays in a booklet, like you're getting the soundtracks.
- 1:14:53Speaker 5: I'm like, how are you as a US company If
- 1:14:56Speaker 5: somebody said like, hey, here's the rights to Dawn the Dead,
- 1:14:58Speaker 5: I'd be like, I don't want it, no somebody else.
- 1:15:03Speaker 3: That's kind of the goal is always to give the
- 1:15:06Speaker 3: release like the respect they deserve. But yet sometimes when
- 1:15:09Speaker 3: it's like a classic like Dawn, you have to go
- 1:15:12Speaker 3: all out and that was Chris fair play too. He's like, well,
- 1:15:15Speaker 3: it's still on the dead, you have to give it
- 1:15:17Speaker 3: fucking everything, and he did.
- 1:15:20Speaker 4: Well. That was my first exposure to Second Site, and
- 1:15:23Speaker 4: I couldn't think of a more iconic release to really
- 1:15:28Speaker 4: cement my interest in the label and just that deeper
- 1:15:31Speaker 4: level of appreciation for the special features and all the
- 1:15:34Speaker 4: love that goes into these releases. So I definitely feel
- 1:15:38Speaker 4: like that release may be a fan of Second Site
- 1:15:40Speaker 4: for life.
- 1:15:41Speaker 3: That's where And No, it was a good thing because
- 1:15:43Speaker 3: Chris and Dave Gregory from Severn, they've known each other
- 1:15:46Speaker 3: for years, so giving all the special features to Severin
- 1:15:50Speaker 3: was like just a smart move because obviously those guys
- 1:15:53Speaker 3: know their horror and don't in particular, they're huge fans
- 1:15:56Speaker 3: of So when you've got fans who are filmmakers like
- 1:15:59Speaker 3: Dave Gregory, it just makes so much sense to let
- 1:16:02Speaker 3: them tackle like the biggest film in the slate. It's like, well,
- 1:16:06Speaker 3: if you're going to give it to someone, give them
- 1:16:07Speaker 3: to the pros, and like Dave Gregory's been doing this
- 1:16:10Speaker 3: for a long time, so it's like, you know it's
- 1:16:12Speaker 3: in good hands.
- 1:16:14Speaker 5: It's funny how we It's funny because the more the
- 1:16:18Speaker 5: more people we talk to, the more I learn how
- 1:16:20Speaker 5: connected all these labels actually are and how much like you.
- 1:16:23Speaker 5: Because on the surface you think like there's a competition aspect,
- 1:16:25Speaker 5: but in reality, I feel like there's really like there
- 1:16:28Speaker 5: might be competitive nature for rights, you know, to put
- 1:16:31Speaker 5: something out, but then once somebody has the rights and
- 1:16:33Speaker 5: it's kind of like concrete they're putting it out. I
- 1:16:36Speaker 5: see a lot of crossover from one label working with others,
- 1:16:39Speaker 5: and it's really nice to see, you know. I prefer
- 1:16:41Speaker 5: that over a competitive space.
- 1:16:44Speaker 3: You know, no for sure, because everyone's kind of got
- 1:16:46Speaker 3: their own niche, right. I mean, film's so broad now,
- 1:16:50Speaker 3: like everyone can and there's a big enough pie for
- 1:16:53Speaker 3: everyone in a sense. So it's like we know, like
- 1:16:55Speaker 3: we can watch a film like that's a great film,
- 1:16:59Speaker 3: but it's probably a better fit for this label as
- 1:17:02Speaker 3: opposed to us, so we can pass on hold like
- 1:17:05Speaker 3: so many films, because we just know it'll be dealt
- 1:17:07Speaker 3: with better elsewhere. I think other labels are the same.
- 1:17:12Speaker 3: They might see something it's good, but could we do
- 1:17:16Speaker 3: the justice this film deserves and that might pass on
- 1:17:19Speaker 3: it as well. So yeah, I think it is literally
- 1:17:22Speaker 3: an industry made up of film lovers like yourselves, like me,
- 1:17:27Speaker 3: So it comes down to what's best for the film.
- 1:17:29Speaker 3: I think everyone shares that. So mentality, does that.
- 1:17:32Speaker 5: Mean we're not going to get a sinful dwarf? Second
- 1:17:35Speaker 5: Site release the.
- 1:17:39Speaker 3: Porn version anyway, might get the censored version.
- 1:17:44Speaker 5: Damn all right.
- 1:17:48Speaker 4: I'm still holding out hope that Second Site will eventually
- 1:17:51Speaker 4: do bring her back because I know you.
- 1:17:54Speaker 3: Yeah, we're all over that, but it's the studio that habit.
- 1:18:01Speaker 3: They're just like nope, oh no way, yeah, a lot
- 1:18:06Speaker 3: of sub license, no at all.
- 1:18:10Speaker 5: Wow, Well that would be a twenty four, right, that's
- 1:18:13Speaker 5: in the US.
- 1:18:13Speaker 3: Yeah, but it's like a flip of the the on
- 1:18:17Speaker 3: the dead situation where a twenty four would probably sub
- 1:18:21Speaker 3: license it to someone. But over here, I think it's Sony.
- 1:18:24Speaker 5: They're like, no, wow, Jesus Christ, that's our title.
- 1:18:31Speaker 3: No go away?
- 1:18:33Speaker 5: Oh no, oh man, Jesus Christ.
- 1:18:38Speaker 4: Because left to it, my dreams have been shattered. Thanks Phil.
- 1:18:42Speaker 5: Sorry, guys, there is always in our group chat, there
- 1:18:46Speaker 5: is a lot of Okay, here's the US release. I
- 1:18:48Speaker 5: wonder if Second Sight it's gonna pick up that.
- 1:18:50Speaker 4: We always talk about that so bad.
- 1:18:54Speaker 5: Oh my god, that is that is hilarious. I wish
- 1:18:57Speaker 5: I know everyone's talking about like I think everyone's hopeful,
- 1:19:02Speaker 5: Like I I don't want to overrun a label with
- 1:19:05Speaker 5: like requests and be like, you know, hey, why didn't
- 1:19:08Speaker 5: you put out this? Why didn't you put out that?
- 1:19:09Speaker 5: Because there's so much going on all the time. But yeah,
- 1:19:12Speaker 5: there's always like a piece of me that like every
- 1:19:14Speaker 5: movie I love could get the the extreme treatment, you know,
- 1:19:19Speaker 5: like in a in a world where like we have
- 1:19:21Speaker 5: a four K box set of Super Mario Brothers from
- 1:19:23Speaker 5: nineteen ninety three, like like Cligula, you know what I mean,
- 1:19:29Speaker 5: Like like there's a big box set for Caligula now
- 1:19:31Speaker 5: on four K, which is like mind blowing, you know.
- 1:19:34Speaker 5: So there's every time we're talking about the US release
- 1:19:38Speaker 5: got announced, it's always, uh, we're always rooting for you
- 1:19:40Speaker 5: guys to come right up behind with the same thanks man.
- 1:19:44Speaker 3: So no there's a love titles whare It's like, oh,
- 1:19:47Speaker 3: that would be really good to do. But then they'd
- 1:19:49Speaker 3: be like someone like the Umbrella guys, they do such
- 1:19:52Speaker 3: good jobs. Now. I was like I was putting as
- 1:19:54Speaker 3: us doing it now because look at that thing. That's
- 1:19:56Speaker 3: amazing like wake In, fright Out, something we're circling for
- 1:19:58Speaker 3: a while and that's released that bad Boy, or releases
- 1:20:01Speaker 3: like Okay, that's that done. We don't need to worry
- 1:20:04Speaker 3: about this one onto the next film.
- 1:20:07Speaker 4: Are there certain films that you personally would have liked
- 1:20:11Speaker 4: to have seen Second Sight tackle at some point or
- 1:20:14Speaker 4: like maybe like dream projects.
- 1:20:15Speaker 3: Oh yeah, that happens all the time. Like I recently
- 1:20:17Speaker 3: just lost Martyrs. I was going for that for so long.
- 1:20:22Speaker 3: I was trying to get that for years.
- 1:20:24Speaker 4: But don't do that to me, man.
- 1:20:29Speaker 3: Yeah, basically that come down to the producers. So basically
- 1:20:33Speaker 3: obsess in Eureka. And there's someone now with Eureka who
- 1:20:36Speaker 3: is an arrow, and that chap, I believe is the
- 1:20:41Speaker 3: person who acquired Laurier's film that they did the ghost Lands,
- 1:20:48Speaker 3: remember that one. Okay, that came out probably about ten
- 1:20:51Speaker 3: years ago now, so they had the relationship. So they're like, yeah,
- 1:20:53Speaker 3: we would you go with these guys because we know
- 1:20:55Speaker 3: these guys, they've done work with us before, and so yeah,
- 1:20:58Speaker 3: losing that in Trouble every day it was like a
- 1:21:00Speaker 3: one two punch. It was the same deal. I was like, no,
- 1:21:04Speaker 3: my French extremity movies.
- 1:21:06Speaker 5: I know, because you guys have Frontiers, you have high tension.
- 1:21:09Speaker 5: That would have been well listen, I I need you
- 1:21:12Speaker 5: to know. Yeah, inside, I need you to know that
- 1:21:15Speaker 5: I need a second sight release of Anatomy of Hell.
- 1:21:17Speaker 5: So I need you to get on that.
- 1:21:19Speaker 3: You know what I mean. Yeah, never say no because
- 1:21:21Speaker 3: we did romance way back when. So yeah, it could
- 1:21:24Speaker 3: be could be a thing. But it's more than I
- 1:21:27Speaker 3: was waiting for four K masters because it's so expensive.
- 1:21:30Speaker 3: Where's Martyrs? Like it's worth doing because we know like
- 1:21:33Speaker 3: people are going to flock.
- 1:21:34Speaker 4: That and not me for Hell.
- 1:21:36Speaker 3: However, Yeah, that was tens of thousands on restoring that
- 1:21:40Speaker 3: one probably won't be as a quick to recoup that money.
- 1:21:45Speaker 5: Yeah, that was one. I got the umbrella like New
- 1:21:48Speaker 5: French Extremity Volume one and uh, you know already half
- 1:21:53Speaker 5: of most of that set was doubles anyway with high
- 1:21:55Speaker 5: tension in Frontier Martyrs. But like, I was watching Anatomy
- 1:21:57Speaker 5: of Hell and there was the second time I've ever
- 1:22:00Speaker 5: seen it and I was like, oh, that's a rough watch.
- 1:22:02Speaker 5: I was like, all right, now let me watch it
- 1:22:03Speaker 5: with the commentary. Somehow, somehow removing most of the audio
- 1:22:08Speaker 5: from the movie and just having somebody talk over the
- 1:22:11Speaker 5: movie made it worse. It's like, oh god, now I
- 1:22:14Speaker 5: have no context, so what's happening?
- 1:22:17Speaker 3: No, what are they doing? Oh?
- 1:22:21Speaker 5: Man, I still listen. And I told Ryan this from
- 1:22:24Speaker 5: our network, I said, I still need and I'm going
- 1:22:27Speaker 5: to campaign. I know it's expensive, I know it's probably
- 1:22:29Speaker 5: not gonna happen, but we need commentary subtitles. Like that's like,
- 1:22:35Speaker 5: let's getting no point in my in my mid thirties
- 1:22:36Speaker 5: where I feel like I need some help.
- 1:22:38Speaker 3: Sometimes that's fair, That is fair actually, because yeah, we've
- 1:22:41Speaker 3: done them subtitles for like the foreign language audio commentaries,
- 1:22:44Speaker 3: but yeah, yes, for the especially sometimes with accents. Thing
- 1:22:47Speaker 3: be pretty thick. What the hell is being said? That's
- 1:22:54Speaker 3: what good feedback?
- 1:22:55Speaker 5: Steve, What was it that I watched that I was
- 1:22:58Speaker 5: telling you. I put on a commentary and I couldn't
- 1:23:00Speaker 5: watch it because of the audio. Do you remember what
- 1:23:04Speaker 5: that was? I had watched. I had put on some
- 1:23:07Speaker 5: studio release and I put on the commentary and the
- 1:23:09Speaker 5: commentary audio and the film audio was exactly the same.
- 1:23:16Speaker 4: I'm blanking on what it was. But I just I
- 1:23:18Speaker 4: like literally laughed out loud when you said that.
- 1:23:21Speaker 3: Well mixed, well mixed guys.
- 1:23:24Speaker 5: I was like, what the fuck is this? Now I
- 1:23:25Speaker 5: can't follow anything? Like now, oh my god, well listen
- 1:23:33Speaker 5: our our, our, Our experience so far with audio commentaries,
- 1:23:37Speaker 5: you know has been great. Uh you know. So what
- 1:23:40Speaker 5: I'm curious of is what was it like hanging out
- 1:23:43Speaker 5: with h Rgaro Diodado with Who's sorry? With Rigaro Didado
- 1:23:48Speaker 5: for the found footage phenomenon? Did you do that?
- 1:23:51Speaker 3: So? Who I was hanging out with? Who? So? What's
- 1:23:58Speaker 3: the name again?
- 1:23:59Speaker 5: I Riguero Diodado. Maybe I'm saying it right, Riggeio?
- 1:24:03Speaker 3: Sorry? Yeah, yeah, rest in peace, Rageerio. I've luckily I
- 1:24:10Speaker 3: hung up with Roggierio a couple of times in the past.
- 1:24:13Speaker 3: But he was the most childish old man you would
- 1:24:18Speaker 3: ever have met, because he was just like a bundle
- 1:24:21Speaker 3: of energy. Man. He's like literally, yeah, he was like
- 1:24:24Speaker 3: a five year old. He just comes everywhere.
- 1:24:32Speaker 4: We're just so casual about just just hanging out with him.
- 1:24:36Speaker 3: But he done cut to a few things here in
- 1:24:39Speaker 3: the UK, which I've been part of. So we hung
- 1:24:43Speaker 3: out a couple of times. So yeah, gone to plenty
- 1:24:45Speaker 3: of meals with him and just so yeah, I knew
- 1:24:49Speaker 3: the guy. Luckily, I was very much lucky enough to
- 1:24:52Speaker 3: have known him before he passed.
- 1:24:54Speaker 5: Oh yeah, man, that's we're getting to that point man,
- 1:24:57Speaker 5: where like unfortunately, like these guys are old. Yeah, you know,
- 1:25:00Speaker 5: like people like every day, you know, you see some
- 1:25:03Speaker 5: celebrity pass and you're like, god, it sucks. But like
- 1:25:05Speaker 5: you look, you're like you're eighty one years old. Like
- 1:25:07Speaker 5: at what point? Yeah, there's no magical elixir. You know
- 1:25:10Speaker 5: these guys.
- 1:25:11Speaker 3: Jackman died, it's like, oh shit, no, really, they're fair.
- 1:25:17Speaker 3: You had a good inning. It's like yeah, but no,
- 1:25:20Speaker 3: like when like Scorsese or Gentle when they all start
- 1:25:22Speaker 3: going and I'm like, that's it.
- 1:25:24Speaker 4: Instead, I'm gonna be down bad when our gentle goes.
- 1:25:27Speaker 4: I'm gonna be down real bad.
- 1:25:30Speaker 3: Same cat it in the woods somewhere.
- 1:25:33Speaker 4: But is no nothing, Christmas, Chris, I'm going off the radar, dude.
- 1:25:37Speaker 5: I always think about that. So fun fact, the town
- 1:25:40Speaker 5: that we live in in New Jersey is the town
- 1:25:42Speaker 5: next to where Steven Spielberg grew up. So like our
- 1:25:45Speaker 5: local theater, the Westmont Theater, which is now a Planet Fitness,
- 1:25:49Speaker 5: was the theater that's Spielberg attended a lot, so they
- 1:25:51Speaker 5: have a plaque for him, and uh, I'll go and
- 1:25:54Speaker 5: visit it frequently. But every time I watch, Like when
- 1:25:56Speaker 5: I watched the Jaws fiftieth documentary, I was like, fuck, man,
- 1:26:00Speaker 5: the day that guy goes, I was like, I might.
- 1:26:02Speaker 3: Just I'm going with him.
- 1:26:11Speaker 5: Oh no, I'm going to open to ride. Man. Oh god,
- 1:26:21Speaker 5: that's insanity.
- 1:26:22Speaker 3: Man. I don't want to live on this world without you. Steve.
- 1:26:28Speaker 5: Oh my god, that is wild, Steve, what do you
- 1:26:36Speaker 5: got anything else? You're thinking?
- 1:26:39Speaker 4: Well, I was. I was actually gonna ask so on
- 1:26:41Speaker 4: the topic of Raguirero, was there anything unexpected or candid
- 1:26:46Speaker 4: or personal that came out of your interview with him
- 1:26:49Speaker 4: that stuck with you afterwards?
- 1:26:51Speaker 3: There was, actually yeah, And it was because everyone knows
- 1:26:55Speaker 3: it's a nihilistic, horrible film realization. Obviously he'd splitting up
- 1:27:02Speaker 3: with his wife using a very bad place mentally, and yeah,
- 1:27:05Speaker 3: like he couldn't see his kids, and he's like, yeah,
- 1:27:07Speaker 3: I just channel a little that anger into this movie.
- 1:27:09Speaker 3: It's like that makes sense now, yeahfect. But he's always
- 1:27:15Speaker 3: just like it's an exploitation movie. It's just a cheap
- 1:27:18Speaker 3: horror film. It's like, no that's actually an artist getting
- 1:27:22Speaker 3: rid of his demons in film form, which I didn't
- 1:27:27Speaker 3: know about prior to the documentary.
- 1:27:30Speaker 5: I didn't know about his son, like telling him, I
- 1:27:33Speaker 5: didn't know about that.
- 1:27:36Speaker 3: So yeah, just him not being able to see his
- 1:27:38Speaker 3: kids is part of the reason why that films so
- 1:27:41Speaker 3: so nasty.
- 1:27:43Speaker 5: Yeah, So I want to ask you mostly for you know,
- 1:27:47Speaker 5: anybody listening. You know clearly our goal here is to
- 1:27:53Speaker 5: drive bonus features. We want to build a new appreciation
- 1:27:55Speaker 5: for them. We want to encourage people to get into
- 1:27:58Speaker 5: commentaries and also like discuss them as well, Like how
- 1:28:02Speaker 5: do we how do we talk more and get the
- 1:28:04Speaker 5: community to talk more about how they fell after a
- 1:28:06Speaker 5: commentary on social media and stuff from somebody who is
- 1:28:10Speaker 5: which I would I would say is a leading expert
- 1:28:13Speaker 5: in the production of bonus features and all of that,
- 1:28:16Speaker 5: how can we and the community encourage companies to keep
- 1:28:20Speaker 5: this stuff on the forefront because I do feel like
- 1:28:23Speaker 5: in the standard market commentaries are going away, you know,
- 1:28:26Speaker 5: they're not on studio releases. All that stuff's fading away,
- 1:28:30Speaker 5: and we need to let boutique companies know is that
- 1:28:33Speaker 5: we need this stuff, like, we need the effort put
- 1:28:36Speaker 5: in How can we and the community continue to support
- 1:28:40Speaker 5: you guys and other companies in this venture of doing this.
- 1:28:44Speaker 3: Yeah, well, what you're doing is sterling in of itself,
- 1:28:47Speaker 3: to be honest, like you, just spreading awareness and talking
- 1:28:49Speaker 3: about them is key, and thank you so much for
- 1:28:53Speaker 3: doing that. But just reaching out to the people who
- 1:28:56Speaker 3: to do it as well, who do it, and just
- 1:28:58Speaker 3: let them know how much they're their work is appreciated
- 1:29:00Speaker 3: because they they're one's doing all like the real hard work,
- 1:29:03Speaker 3: like you guys would know you hear them like, they
- 1:29:05Speaker 3: have to research that, they have to go through all that.
- 1:29:08Speaker 3: So it's them who really I think need to hear
- 1:29:10Speaker 3: it the most because we get lovely emails like from
- 1:29:12Speaker 3: people say, oh I love the release and this w
- 1:29:14Speaker 3: x y Z in particular, So we'll pass that on
- 1:29:16Speaker 3: to the people at times when they named in detail,
- 1:29:22Speaker 3: and so yeah, letting people actually know who do this,
- 1:29:24Speaker 3: let them know how much their work is appreciated is
- 1:29:27Speaker 3: definitely a good place. But for the more casual film fans,
- 1:29:30Speaker 3: I think it's a bigger question because we as film
- 1:29:33Speaker 3: fans know like audio commentaries are very much part and past,
- 1:29:37Speaker 3: part and past of a release now for us and
- 1:29:39Speaker 3: for other labels because they're staple. I mean, the DVD
- 1:29:43Speaker 3: wouldn't be where it was without the audio commentaries, right
- 1:29:45Speaker 3: or Lazy disc before that. So I think for the hardcore,
- 1:29:49Speaker 3: we know they here to stay. The casual viewers is
- 1:29:51Speaker 3: how do you get them interested? And that's a much
- 1:29:55Speaker 3: harder question that I don't think any of us can
- 1:29:58Speaker 3: answer because it's going to be I'm too busy. I've
- 1:30:00Speaker 3: watched the film and I'm to go watch it again.
- 1:30:02Speaker 3: I've only got so many times in so many hours
- 1:30:04Speaker 3: in the day, So it's a it's a tough one.
- 1:30:07Speaker 3: But if you're into film and you want to broaden
- 1:30:11Speaker 3: your horizon, be it academically like learning more about what
- 1:30:14Speaker 3: went into making the film, or as a filmmaker aspiring
- 1:30:18Speaker 3: filmmaker who can learn what actually goes into making these
- 1:30:22Speaker 3: films from a production side, then you're going to make
- 1:30:24Speaker 3: the time for it. But more casual fans like what
- 1:30:27Speaker 3: reason do they have to make time to listen to
- 1:30:29Speaker 3: these stories? And I think that's that's a tough question,
- 1:30:33Speaker 3: and I don't have an answer.
- 1:30:34Speaker 5: I'm sorry, No, it's okay. I mean we we will
- 1:30:38Speaker 5: eventually have one, Like I already talked to Megan Navarro
- 1:30:41Speaker 5: about coming on every booklet that I read, every commentary,
- 1:30:44Speaker 5: I go out of my way to like find a
- 1:30:47Speaker 5: contact for whoever wrote it, because I want to get
- 1:30:50Speaker 5: I want to get them on to maybe not talk
- 1:30:52Speaker 5: about a specific one, but just to just to talk
- 1:30:55Speaker 5: about what it's like. You know, that's that's incredibly important
- 1:30:59Speaker 5: to us. And I think, you know, as time goes
- 1:31:03Speaker 5: on and the bartiqul label continues to grow, which it is,
- 1:31:06Speaker 5: I mean, every day, you know, I'm getting followed by
- 1:31:08Speaker 5: somebody new on Instagram who's new to collecting, and or
- 1:31:12Speaker 5: it's just comments on like YouTube channels or whatever. You know,
- 1:31:15Speaker 5: there's now kind of being having this behind me. I've
- 1:31:19Speaker 5: realized that I'm no longer.
- 1:31:20Speaker 3: New at this, and I think you put in the work, sir.
- 1:31:24Speaker 5: Yes, I forgot what it was like to start and
- 1:31:29Speaker 5: be like, Okay, what do I get? What's important? What's this?
- 1:31:31Speaker 5: What's you know? And we want to let people know,
- 1:31:35Speaker 5: like especially the people behind it, like you know, having
- 1:31:37Speaker 5: you on or whoever, that that it's it's appreciated. That's
- 1:31:40Speaker 5: so important because I feel like that to drive people
- 1:31:42Speaker 5: to keep doing no.
- 1:31:43Speaker 3: Thank you, but they did. I got a question for
- 1:31:46Speaker 3: you guys, I mean, what was the release that got
- 1:31:48Speaker 3: you into collecting? Not from second sarte to say.
- 1:31:54Speaker 4: In general, oh, I would have to say Anchor Bay
- 1:32:00Speaker 4: was pivotal in getting into just actively collecting film. But
- 1:32:06Speaker 4: I would have to say the Dawn of the Dead
- 1:32:08Speaker 4: release that they did like the set, Yeah, the box
- 1:32:13Speaker 4: set that yep, So that box set, I would say,
- 1:32:17Speaker 4: the Halloween release and Evil Dead are the ones set
- 1:32:22Speaker 4: I definitively remember getting and that developed my love for
- 1:32:26Speaker 4: eventually collecting. You know, I had already collected VHS's, but
- 1:32:30Speaker 4: I think taking a step further with DVDs at that point, man,
- 1:32:35Speaker 4: and then from there you know, obviously, you know, it's
- 1:32:38Speaker 4: just continue to build and build to the point where
- 1:32:41Speaker 4: you know, Chris and I have a deep love for
- 1:32:43Speaker 4: cinema now as a result.
- 1:32:46Speaker 3: The experience, right you you the set is an experience
- 1:32:52Speaker 3: in and of itself. It's not just an absolute way
- 1:32:54Speaker 3: of watching the film. It is an experience like you
- 1:32:58Speaker 3: watch the film, you know what's there, but you read
- 1:33:00Speaker 3: the book gainst some more insight. It's the audio comedy,
- 1:33:02Speaker 3: get some more insights then, so the interviews more insight.
- 1:33:07Speaker 3: So it's very much for me, it was it was
- 1:33:10Speaker 3: Anchor Bay as well. They'd sleep Away Camp, brox it, Oh.
- 1:33:17Speaker 4: Yeah, Survival take It Yeah, yepp.
- 1:33:21Speaker 3: It was like it was that like seeing like what
- 1:33:23Speaker 3: they did to like make this like little at that time,
- 1:33:26Speaker 3: it's like a d rate slasher franchise, Like no one
- 1:33:30Speaker 3: really cared about it, and you've got a hardcore slasher fan. Yeah,
- 1:33:34Speaker 3: how they were able to take this franchise and twist
- 1:33:37Speaker 3: into something fun and unique that even a goofy, little
- 1:33:40Speaker 3: kid like music, I'm going to check those out there
- 1:33:43Speaker 3: was entirely with that franchise.
- 1:33:45Speaker 4: Yeah, there was a lot of love that was put
- 1:33:47Speaker 4: into that release. I mean just you know, by collecting
- 1:33:50Speaker 4: standards now at this point, I mean it's highly coveted.
- 1:33:53Speaker 4: I mean we didn't know that at the time, but
- 1:33:55Speaker 4: it's a very special release.
- 1:33:57Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:33:58Speaker 5: For me, it was the I had been collecting for
- 1:34:01Speaker 5: a little while. But the release that I feel like
- 1:34:04Speaker 5: put me overboard was when I went on eBay and
- 1:34:07Speaker 5: I bought the hell Raser Scarlet box from Arrow. That
- 1:34:11Speaker 5: was and I mean of everything that I've upgraded and
- 1:34:14Speaker 5: stuff I've gotten rid of, that's the one blue ray
- 1:34:16Speaker 5: set like I've upgraded now to the Court out of torment,
- 1:34:18Speaker 5: but I still put on that scarlet box because I'll
- 1:34:22Speaker 5: never forget the day. It was almost like my eyes
- 1:34:25Speaker 5: were open to to you know, like the the fact
- 1:34:29Speaker 5: that the all the Clive Barker documentaries that were in it,
- 1:34:32Speaker 5: the book. It was actually kind of overwhelming, you know
- 1:34:35Speaker 5: at that time to be like, oh, let me dive
- 1:34:38Speaker 5: into this. But still I can't let go of that release,
- 1:34:42Speaker 5: like I just I love it.
- 1:34:45Speaker 3: Man. That was the Ankoba one where it came in
- 1:34:48Speaker 3: the configuration box. Did you get in the US on DVD?
- 1:34:54Speaker 3: Here is in the shape of the lamin configuration box.
- 1:34:57Speaker 3: It's amazing. That's the only thing Arrow did wrong was
- 1:35:01Speaker 3: the packaging. But you can't redo it, like like I'm
- 1:35:04Speaker 3: just gonna take what Ankabay did and do it again.
- 1:35:07Speaker 3: So it's one of those things like how do we
- 1:35:10Speaker 3: talk that, Like you can't.
- 1:35:12Speaker 4: I remember having they had that double pack for hell
- 1:35:16Speaker 4: Raiser one and two, and that's how I remember watching
- 1:35:19Speaker 4: it because I was like, man, this is like the
- 1:35:20Speaker 4: perfect double feature. But I feel like you hit these
- 1:35:23Speaker 4: really high highs with those two films, and then after that,
- 1:35:26Speaker 4: you know, some of the films kind of like kind
- 1:35:28Speaker 4: of you know, hit or miss a little bit.
- 1:35:31Speaker 3: I like three and four of like, yeah, nostalgia, Like
- 1:35:34Speaker 3: you've seen them as like a teenager and like they
- 1:35:37Speaker 3: were just goofy and fun, but as an adult, just
- 1:35:39Speaker 3: like get the garbage, but they'll see a teen year
- 1:35:42Speaker 3: old he still loves it.
- 1:35:44Speaker 5: The evolution is always interesting because I remember when I
- 1:35:47Speaker 5: bought the Scar in the box, I was like, I
- 1:35:48Speaker 5: don't know what I'm gonna do with two and three,
- 1:35:50Speaker 5: Like I just like hell Raser. Now I love hell
- 1:35:53Speaker 5: Raser two and I love hel Razor three. You know, problem,
- 1:35:56Speaker 5: I think I like hell Raser two better than the
- 1:35:58Speaker 5: first one just because it's more fun. You know, the
- 1:36:01Speaker 5: doctor is incredible and he's got some some incredible moments
- 1:36:05Speaker 5: in that movie. But it's funny now how that's changed.
- 1:36:07Speaker 5: And I look and I'm like, man, I'm so happy
- 1:36:09Speaker 5: I had those because now they're you know, favorites of mine.
- 1:36:14Speaker 5: And the same with like there's so many movies that
- 1:36:17Speaker 5: you know, I bought on physical media, and Psycho is
- 1:36:20Speaker 5: probably a big one where like now Psycho two, three,
- 1:36:23Speaker 5: and four are more important to me than the first
- 1:36:24Speaker 5: Psycho is, and that's thanks to you know, it was
- 1:36:29Speaker 5: initially like I think I got the studio like collection
- 1:36:33Speaker 5: pack and that's when I started realizing, like, oh, I
- 1:36:36Speaker 5: actually like these. And then when Aero did the four k's,
- 1:36:38Speaker 5: I was like, man, I really like these as I
- 1:36:41Speaker 5: learned more about them, you know, like Richard Franklin's Psycho
- 1:36:45Speaker 5: two is incredible, you know.
- 1:36:46Speaker 3: And shout out to mccars again mccartt.
- 1:36:49Speaker 5: Yeah, that guy just keeps coming back, man, mcer like anything.
- 1:36:55Speaker 5: So I don't know. I mean, my win Evil Lurks
- 1:36:59Speaker 5: hasn't even showed up yet. I'm waiting for that.
- 1:37:01Speaker 3: But any well, sorry, mate, do you want to know?
- 1:37:04Speaker 3: You do this one? I ordered it.
- 1:37:10Speaker 5: I ordered it with other releases like that are off shipping,
- 1:37:13Speaker 5: like when the later releases come and I always forget
- 1:37:16Speaker 5: that that's happen. But anything that you like is there.
- 1:37:21Speaker 5: I hate asking this, but like, what's without asking you
- 1:37:26Speaker 5: to reveal anything. What's the rest of the year look
- 1:37:30Speaker 5: like for Second Sight? I mean, are we in for
- 1:37:32Speaker 5: a ride here?
- 1:37:34Speaker 3: So we got the Innkeepers and Pusher coming up the
- 1:37:37Speaker 3: end of this month, which you guys probably know about,
- 1:37:40Speaker 3: and again the Florida Project which is on the horizon,
- 1:37:44Speaker 3: Possessions on the horizon, So all these are going to
- 1:37:47Speaker 3: be out by the end of the year. There's another
- 1:37:50Speaker 3: film that's on the horizon as well, which isn't going
- 1:37:53Speaker 3: to be as exciting because it's already had release in
- 1:37:56Speaker 3: the US. But you know, it's a big, much left
- 1:38:00Speaker 3: eighties horror film. But that's all I can say. But yeah,
- 1:38:04Speaker 3: nobody out though, so you guys might not be as
- 1:38:05Speaker 3: excited about it and stand them because already got a
- 1:38:08Speaker 3: really good release. But so he's again trying to figure
- 1:38:11Speaker 3: out how do we make it better? And also, yeah,
- 1:38:17Speaker 3: that's pretty much it for the end of the year. Actually,
- 1:38:20Speaker 3: I mean in my head, I'm already in October November
- 1:38:23Speaker 3: because I'm so far ahead with deadlines and everything. So yeah,
- 1:38:27Speaker 3: probably shut down mid December. So yeah, the year's over. Sorry, guys,
- 1:38:30Speaker 3: that's it.
- 1:38:31Speaker 5: Well, I will say with your with your comments about it,
- 1:38:34Speaker 5: already has a us. It's not exciting both of us
- 1:38:37Speaker 5: sitting here with you. Did or actively own Return to
- 1:38:40Speaker 5: Living Dead on four K from Screen Factory and just
- 1:38:44Speaker 5: purchased the arrow Okay, so we're not shy to upgrading with.
- 1:38:55Speaker 3: But yeah, it would definitely be a case of that.
- 1:38:57Speaker 3: But it's a it's a great film. But so hopefully
- 1:39:00Speaker 3: the packaging will be better. So the reason to double it.
- 1:39:05Speaker 5: I am excited about the Pusher trilogy. That's one of
- 1:39:07Speaker 5: my most anticipated sweet man.
- 1:39:10Speaker 3: Yeah, because it's always like a gamble with the the
- 1:39:14Speaker 3: non horror stuff, because like how big is the collectors
- 1:39:18Speaker 3: scene for like a Danish crime trilogy, So it's like
- 1:39:24Speaker 3: how do you gauge the interest? And so luckily with
- 1:39:27Speaker 3: Nick obviously he's got quite a lot of fan base himself,
- 1:39:30Speaker 3: so it's a much easier proposition. But then something like
- 1:39:34Speaker 3: a Bittersweet Life, it's like Korean cinema, how much interest
- 1:39:38Speaker 3: is there in that? Because I'm a huge Korean cinema
- 1:39:41Speaker 3: but so I've been trying to push this thing for
- 1:39:43Speaker 3: a number of years. Same with the French extremity stuff
- 1:39:46Speaker 3: like this stuff I love, I won't do it. Yeah,
- 1:39:49Speaker 3: how receptive is this going to be? To like the
- 1:39:52Speaker 3: Collectors world? So luckily it's gone okay so far. So
- 1:39:56Speaker 3: we do have some of the Korean stuff coming up.
- 1:39:57Speaker 3: And I did lose out. Title I lost out on
- 1:40:01Speaker 3: was a career film called Happy End. I don't know
- 1:40:04Speaker 3: who got in. They won't say you better do it justice.
- 1:40:07Speaker 5: Whoever you are, Well look, man, I'm gonna need you
- 1:40:11Speaker 5: to I'm gonna need you to stick on the Nicholas
- 1:40:13Speaker 5: Winding reference train. I need only God forgives, I need
- 1:40:15Speaker 5: Neon Demon.
- 1:40:17Speaker 4: I even need the uh Demon.
- 1:40:19Speaker 5: I forget what it's called. What was the show he
- 1:40:20Speaker 5: did on Prime U Too Young to Die Old? Yeah?
- 1:40:25Speaker 3: Too young? Yeah?
- 1:40:26Speaker 5: Yeah, Like I need everything? That guy something something, So
- 1:40:32Speaker 5: I don't know something like that. I guess right, Uh, Steve,
- 1:40:37Speaker 5: is there anything you want to ask before we before
- 1:40:39Speaker 5: we kind of send off here?
- 1:40:41Speaker 4: Yeah? So Phil, I know you were you were talking.
- 1:40:44Speaker 4: We were talking a little bit about Anchor Bay releases
- 1:40:47Speaker 4: and getting into collecting, so I know that they were
- 1:40:51Speaker 4: very crucial in a lot of the Italian horror uh
- 1:40:54Speaker 4: movies that we know and love. Was that your first exposure,
- 1:40:59Speaker 4: like where you initially got into Italian horror? Like, like
- 1:41:02Speaker 4: how did that come to be? Like early on?
- 1:41:04Speaker 3: Yeah? So back here in the UK, we had a
- 1:41:07Speaker 3: label called Vipco. They're quite notorious in the VHS circle
- 1:41:11Speaker 3: as that they had most of the video nasties, but
- 1:41:14Speaker 3: they also had to release everything with the BBFC approved cuts,
- 1:41:19Speaker 3: so all of my first interactions were through heavily censored versions.
- 1:41:24Speaker 3: Of like the Beyond and cul Cheese catalog in particular
- 1:41:27Speaker 3: that Vipico had the butchered BBFC versions on VHS via them.
- 1:41:33Speaker 3: But there's just always something about like Italian filmmaking during
- 1:41:37Speaker 3: that period just so gonzo and just unlike anything else
- 1:41:41Speaker 3: like period. It's just like such a welly, little like
- 1:41:46Speaker 3: period of time that I love that this small little
- 1:41:48Speaker 3: country just made these fucking outlandish movies and just that
- 1:41:53Speaker 3: at such a pace as well, and it just went away,
- 1:41:56Speaker 3: which I find truly sad. But yeah, my love of
- 1:42:01Speaker 3: horror comes through going to the video store and my
- 1:42:04Speaker 3: little trusty man in a yellow van coming to my
- 1:42:07Speaker 3: door and asking me if I want to watch any
- 1:42:08Speaker 3: horror films and him having a lot of Italian horror.
- 1:42:13Speaker 4: I wish I could have had an experience like that
- 1:42:15Speaker 4: that sounds that sounds.
- 1:42:16Speaker 3: Didn't have to do the house man. You just come
- 1:42:18Speaker 3: and any videos come out like, yes, what you got.
- 1:42:23Speaker 3: It's like literally the dodgiest looking thing ever. It's like
- 1:42:26Speaker 3: the yellow van, you open up the two back doors
- 1:42:29Speaker 3: and step in. Child. They could get away with that
- 1:42:37Speaker 3: these days, but yeah, in the nineties, it is fine,
- 1:42:42Speaker 3: you have.
- 1:42:43Speaker 5: I was just gonna say it makes me laugh. Like
- 1:42:45Speaker 5: in the US, you know, our parents are we still
- 1:42:47Speaker 5: like hey, you know the van kid, I got candy?
- 1:42:49Speaker 5: You want to happen?
- 1:42:50Speaker 3: And like.
- 1:42:54Speaker 5: I've got I've got What have they done to your daughters?
- 1:42:57Speaker 3: On the step on in? And Anthropoplacus the Beast you
- 1:43:00Speaker 3: want to come in the.
- 1:43:02Speaker 4: Phil I would be the first victim then. If that's
- 1:43:04Speaker 4: the case, Oh yeah, it would be.
- 1:43:07Speaker 5: A mystic river over here on my side of the park,
- 1:43:09Speaker 5: you know what I mean?
- 1:43:10Speaker 4: Oh my god? Are there any that our standouts to you?
- 1:43:15Speaker 4: Like growing up? Were there certain Italian horror films that
- 1:43:19Speaker 4: I think mean more than others to you in your experience?
- 1:43:22Speaker 3: Yeah? And maybe because the Dawn the Dead thing, But
- 1:43:25Speaker 3: when I was a kid, I didn't really pick up
- 1:43:27Speaker 3: on it. But Zombie Flesh Eaters was my ship, Like
- 1:43:29Speaker 3: I was absolutely that movie. It was just like this
- 1:43:33Speaker 3: still to this day is like one of my ultimate
- 1:43:35Speaker 3: comfort films, like and just be in the worst mood ever,
- 1:43:37Speaker 3: just chuck down and melt.
- 1:43:41Speaker 5: Are you ever as a big zombie fan? Are you
- 1:43:44Speaker 5: a fan of like Doctor Butcher, m D and stuff?
- 1:43:45Speaker 3: Yeah? Absolutely, all those, all those and another one that
- 1:43:50Speaker 3: wasn't so Luccio Fulty because it was always grown up
- 1:43:53Speaker 3: full gy argentle, full gy aargentle like who I like
- 1:43:56Speaker 3: the most. But as time goes on, that's when I
- 1:43:59Speaker 3: just a Demato and like he is like my ultimate
- 1:44:03Speaker 3: comfort director now, like just Deomatto in even like his
- 1:44:07Speaker 3: atour and he's like fantasy stuff, like he's watching and
- 1:44:09Speaker 3: just wash over me. And I'm not a fantasy guy,
- 1:44:12Speaker 3: but if Joe Diomato is behind it, I'm a fantasy guy.
- 1:44:16Speaker 3: So yeah, ironically, yeah, I say Deo Matto is now
- 1:44:19Speaker 3: my favorite Italian filmmaker, which when I was a kid,
- 1:44:23Speaker 3: I wouldn't have said now because he's not the most respected,
- 1:44:29Speaker 3: but there's some work ethic and just like his films
- 1:44:31Speaker 3: like this is unrelentingly commercial, like he was not in
- 1:44:35Speaker 3: it for the art at all. He was literally about
- 1:44:37Speaker 3: his money, and it's like something I respect about that.
- 1:44:41Speaker 3: Almost He's just like, no, I'm doing this because the
- 1:44:43Speaker 3: market needs it, there's a demand for it. That's the
- 1:44:45Speaker 3: only reason I'm doing this. I was like, yeah, fuck,
- 1:44:48Speaker 3: he's not pretentious. Yeah, I'm with you.
- 1:44:51Speaker 5: Yeah, I remember, I remember finding a whole new appreciation
- 1:44:54Speaker 5: for him when I watched The Inferno Rosso. Yeah, documentary,
- 1:44:58Speaker 5: and it was so sad at the end of his
- 1:45:00Speaker 5: career that he just kind of stuck, you know, got
- 1:45:02Speaker 5: stuck with doing adult films to bring in the money. Yeah,
- 1:45:05Speaker 5: I mean, it's to poor him and is found it's
- 1:45:07Speaker 5: so sad, man, because what I always longed for, like
- 1:45:10Speaker 5: what you could have done, you know what I mean,
- 1:45:12Speaker 5: had the tables been turned.
- 1:45:13Speaker 3: So for sure, if he had not been caught up
- 1:45:16Speaker 3: in all that stuff that led to all those health
- 1:45:18Speaker 3: issues and talking out, he would have been able to
- 1:45:21Speaker 3: see his like whole film OK, be reappraised and like
- 1:45:25Speaker 3: now he's actually seen as like a talent, a good filmmaker,
- 1:45:28Speaker 3: like someone that people have a respect for. And it's
- 1:45:32Speaker 3: sad that he didn't get to see any of that.
- 1:45:34Speaker 3: And same to us an extent to Fulci because he
- 1:45:37Speaker 3: was dead long before. He's like star Rose in the
- 1:45:40Speaker 3: horror scene because there's always hardcore fans where you need
- 1:45:44Speaker 3: to watch it out full she those crappy dubbed Italian movies. No,
- 1:45:47Speaker 3: I ain't watching that, but that that's kind of like
- 1:45:50Speaker 3: dissipated over the years thanks to these DVD releases and
- 1:45:53Speaker 3: the young cut versions finally being out. Yeah, yeah, guys,
- 1:45:57Speaker 3: didn't get to see it.
- 1:45:58Speaker 5: I feel that we were just thrying.
- 1:46:00Speaker 3: Go.
- 1:46:00Speaker 5: I'm a huge Franco guy and to see you know,
- 1:46:03Speaker 5: the volume of movies being discovered of his and being
- 1:46:06Speaker 5: put out and reappraised, you know, to the point where
- 1:46:10Speaker 5: it's kind of overwhelming. You know, we got, uh my god,
- 1:46:14Speaker 5: why am I Banket four moons putting out you know,
- 1:46:17Speaker 5: copies of his movies, and now Delirium is putting them
- 1:46:20Speaker 5: out and then other like they're all every every week.
- 1:46:22Speaker 5: I feel like there's a new Franco announcement.
- 1:46:24Speaker 3: You know. I think Dave and carltt Severn are a
- 1:46:26Speaker 3: big part of that because they've been such like bastions
- 1:46:29Speaker 3: of his work for so long and stuff they were
- 1:46:31Speaker 3: doing with Blue Underground before they started severing, like they
- 1:46:35Speaker 3: were the same with Bill Lestic. I mean, the big
- 1:46:38Speaker 3: Franco fans themselves, and I think it's because of their
- 1:46:40Speaker 3: determination to get his films out there that yeah, it
- 1:46:44Speaker 3: is where it is now because yeah, back in the day,
- 1:46:45Speaker 3: Franco was just like guy did Zombie Lake. That was
- 1:46:49Speaker 3: John Rowling want oted of the zombies? Which one do
- 1:46:52Speaker 3: you do? But Jean Rowling is now a big thing
- 1:46:56Speaker 3: as well, like people love Geen Rowling.
- 1:46:57Speaker 5: Again, Oh I love dude. The Indicator releases are incredible, Dude.
- 1:47:03Speaker 5: I've been screaming to the moon about his stuff. Man,
- 1:47:05Speaker 5: Like I just watched I just watched The Nude Vampire
- 1:47:09Speaker 5: a couple of nights ago, and I was like, holy
- 1:47:10Speaker 5: fuck me, this movie is incredible. Like, yeah, I don't
- 1:47:13Speaker 5: know why, I just love like Knight of the Hunted
- 1:47:15Speaker 5: is probably his most you know what I mean. But
- 1:47:17Speaker 5: even going back to like Rape of the Vampire and
- 1:47:20Speaker 5: all the like, he his work is beautiful and it
- 1:47:23Speaker 5: works so well in the four K transfers. It looks incredible.
- 1:47:27Speaker 3: But back in the day they were just like those hacks.
- 1:47:29Speaker 3: You want to watch one of those movies. But now
- 1:47:32Speaker 3: it's like they you got a prestige released behind them.
- 1:47:35Speaker 3: So it's like, yeah, how these the reputations have changed
- 1:47:38Speaker 3: over the last forty years. It's been well, I can't
- 1:47:41Speaker 3: say forty years. Forty years ago, their garbage, their reputation
- 1:47:45Speaker 3: was in the gutter. But now like the last twenty years,
- 1:47:49Speaker 3: all these filmmakers, because of I do generally leave these
- 1:47:52Speaker 3: home entertainment like releases of why their reputations have changed.
- 1:47:58Speaker 4: Even with like umbert Leni. That's another director that I
- 1:48:02Speaker 4: feel like just for the long guy, right yeah, yeah,
- 1:48:07Speaker 4: and his films like now that they're getting more boutique treatment,
- 1:48:10Speaker 4: like I feel like now that that's allowing him to
- 1:48:13Speaker 4: have more exposure on some of his maybe lesser known films.
- 1:48:16Speaker 4: But he's somebody I I hold up there with the
- 1:48:19Speaker 4: likes of Diamato and Fulci and our gentiles.
- 1:48:22Speaker 3: Ci Giamatino as well. Like previously, he wasn't really like
- 1:48:25Speaker 3: twenty years ago, people would be like who like Cimatino.
- 1:48:30Speaker 3: The last twenty years has got like his stars rapidly
- 1:48:34Speaker 3: ascended because of Steph like I Eli Wath putting Edwie John,
- 1:48:40Speaker 3: was it Looke Mirenda in Hustle too?
- 1:48:45Speaker 4: Wasn't Diadado in that as well?
- 1:48:46Speaker 3: You know he's in the first one, the first one
- 1:48:49Speaker 3: was in the first one, money.
- 1:48:52Speaker 1: Was it?
- 1:48:53Speaker 2: Oh?
- 1:48:53Speaker 4: That's right?
- 1:48:54Speaker 5: In the first isn't he the one eating is the
- 1:48:56Speaker 5: Adada the one eating the guy he's like fillying the
- 1:48:58Speaker 5: guy's skin on.
- 1:48:59Speaker 3: It's definitely one of them, isn't he He is eating
- 1:49:02Speaker 3: some of the director ye one or two? Because Ed
- 1:49:07Speaker 3: and I think Luke Miranda god It, George Hilton is
- 1:49:11Speaker 3: in number two as well. Make make more sense for
- 1:49:14Speaker 3: all the Italians to be in that one, but then
- 1:49:16Speaker 3: it also makes sense for have Didato in the first one.
- 1:49:22Speaker 5: Yeah yeah, well, Phil, Look, we can't thank you enough
- 1:49:26Speaker 5: for your time, you know, especially especially to get this
- 1:49:30Speaker 5: length of time from you. Know, we know you're a
- 1:49:31Speaker 5: busy guy, so we appreciate it. I don't know if
- 1:49:35Speaker 5: you I've done. Are you on are you a social
- 1:49:38Speaker 5: media guy or no?
- 1:49:45Speaker 3: It's a necessary evil. I know I get it, but no,
- 1:49:47Speaker 3: for the most part, I'm on Letterbox. That's that's my
- 1:49:50Speaker 3: social media right there.
- 1:49:52Speaker 5: Okay, that's okay, Well I'll go I'll make sure I
- 1:49:54Speaker 5: follow you over.
- 1:49:56Speaker 3: There.
- 1:49:57Speaker 5: And now, thanks to you, I'm going to start writing
- 1:49:59Speaker 5: on letter but some more effort into that and not
- 1:50:03Speaker 5: just trying to be witty to get the most liked review.
- 1:50:06Speaker 3: Yeah no, no, no room for that, man. I like
- 1:50:09Speaker 3: in depth analysis, all.
- 1:50:12Speaker 5: Right, Steve, we got to start putting into work on
- 1:50:14Speaker 5: letter Box.
- 1:50:15Speaker 4: I gotta I gotta step it up. I gotta get
- 1:50:17Speaker 4: in fill levels here.
- 1:50:21Speaker 5: Okay, God damn it, man, I feel like we came
- 1:50:24Speaker 5: out of this and more work right right, It has
- 1:50:28Speaker 5: gotten harder now.
- 1:50:29Speaker 4: Like he's holding us to a higher standard.
- 1:50:31Speaker 3: Now, yeah, you guys know expect more. Thank you.
- 1:50:36Speaker 5: I I listen, dude, I love, I love. It's it's
- 1:50:38Speaker 5: amazing to hear that. But like I'm more nervous coming
- 1:50:40Speaker 5: out of this than I was going in. All right, Yeah, man,
- 1:50:46Speaker 5: thank you so much?
- 1:50:47Speaker 4: Do we serious? Thank you so much?
- 1:50:49Speaker 5: Thank you for your work you know over at Second
- 1:50:52Speaker 5: Sight and everything that you guys are doing. You know,
- 1:50:53Speaker 5: we're we're fans for life. So you know, I can't
- 1:50:57Speaker 5: thank you enough on all fronts.
- 1:50:58Speaker 3: You know, No, that means it not meank you And yeah,
- 1:51:00Speaker 3: thanks for the support and helping spread the word.
- 1:51:03Speaker 5: Of course, absolutely, Steve. Anything you want to say before
- 1:51:06Speaker 5: we round out.
- 1:51:08Speaker 4: No, I think we covered everything. I can't wait to
- 1:51:10Speaker 4: see what what you guys got in the works. And
- 1:51:13Speaker 4: you know, both Chris and I will be actively just
- 1:51:16Speaker 4: just to wait and see mode.
- 1:51:18Speaker 5: We'll be patiently waiting, you know, by the time the
- 1:51:21Speaker 5: next second Side announcement, we'll get like two or three
- 1:51:23Speaker 5: letterbox reviews out and.
- 1:51:27Speaker 3: Hopefully the next release will be worth it.

- 1:51:54Speaker 3: Why am I?
- 1:51:55Speaker 5: Why am I forgetting now? Yes? Maybe I think it
- 1:51:57Speaker 5: is Yeah, I think it is Ted. Yes, just a
