Transcript
- 0:00Here's what's coming up on our program.
- 0:02In 20 minutes, we will talk to Eugene.
- 0:04Repay covers Iowa State for the Des Moines Register.
- 0:07I will get the latest on Cincinnati, Iowa State.
- 0:10Look ahead to that one coming up here with Eugene at 12:20.
- 0:13Then we'll hit the Las Vegas. Mike Palm, vice president of
- 0:16operations at Circa Sports. He can't tell us how many people
- 0:21went down in flames in Survivor last night because they don't
- 0:24reveal that officially until tomorrow evening once all of the
- 0:27entries are in. But I have to imagine it's a
- 0:30pretty high percentage. More on that coming up by here
- 0:32in a couple of minutes. So Mike Palm coming up at 12:40.
- 0:36Bama, Bob Trent and I will go around college football to kick
- 0:39off our number 2 Tom Caker on the Hawks as they set into their
- 0:42bye week. Pick his brain if he's got any
- 0:45Intel at all from the Granowski and the updates at all or how he
- 0:49what he heard, how he interpreted, I guess better Tim
- 0:53Lester categorizing it as cloudy.
- 0:56So we'll see that. We'll make some picks and we
- 0:58will turn things over to off the bench with Sean and Lucas coming
- 1:02up at 2:00. What a day of baseball.
- 1:06The Thursday Night Football game goes to overtime.
- 1:09Just a really good day of sports strength.
- 1:11It really was. Absolutely, you get those 3
- 1:13closeout games throughout the afternoon and into the evening.
- 1:17A huge upset in the NFL divisional game.
- 1:19Two name brands on top. Of it, two name brands.
- 1:22Yep. Definitely made that even
- 1:24better. It would just kind of perfect,
- 1:25right? What you're looking for for a
- 1:27fall afternoon and this incredibly hot fall that's going
- 1:30to be changing next. Week.
- 1:32Buckle up. As I saw the changes that are
- 1:34going to be happening for us, but yeah, I mean, absolutely
- 1:36perfect. I guess you want to start with
- 1:38the Cubs and what they were able.
- 1:40To do absolutely look, I, I feel for the Padres in the fact that
- 1:44like they couldn't hit, they didn't get any hits the whole
- 1:46series. Both teams struggled to hit the
- 1:48baseball, but the the the called third strike in the 9th inning.
- 1:53I mean, again, it's it's going to change next year, assuming
- 1:56they have challenges left and you haven't blown them already.
- 1:59But I mean, that's bases loaded, nobody out.
- 2:02How does that change things potentially?
- 2:04But the Cubs move on now they get the Brewers.
- 2:06How fun will that be? What can you say?
- 2:11It was a great series. It was fun series.
- 2:13And the the Cubs who moved the needle here like no other team
- 2:16in Major League Baseball, they advanced.
- 2:18So it's good for business if nothing else.
- 2:20Did did you have that just that pit in your stomach feeling that
- 2:26when they didn't push around through more in the second when
- 2:29there were just so many opportunities, this was the game
- 2:31that the Cubs actually did hit. Yeah.
- 2:32They had base runners. Yeah, people.
- 2:34Armstrong. 3 for four. Guys all over the place, they
- 2:37just couldn't get that knockout blow.
- 2:39Did you have the feeling that? They got 2 and they felt like
- 2:42they could have had more. As a neutral arbiter, somebody
- 2:46that didn't have a rooting interest, missed opportunity.
- 2:49Yeah, it felt like it. Felt like it absolutely did you
- 2:53you can certainly make that case.
- 2:54Obviously Michael Bush is home run in the seventh inning to put
- 2:58the game to three to nothing. I'll tell you and we talked
- 3:00about this maybe with Cappy somebody came up in our
- 3:03conversation this week Dansby Swanson's glove I mean his play
- 3:07in the field and Mike Schultz said as much after the game.
- 3:10He said Dansby Swanson single handedly his glove single
- 3:13handedly beat us. Now they had some help.
- 3:16But boy, oh boy, he was fantastic.
- 3:18Gold Glove in his past. Not sure there'll be one this
- 3:20year, but he's he's certainly and he had more errors seemingly
- 3:24draw at the regular season than I remember him having.
- 3:26But boy, oh boy, this playoff series at wild card was
- 3:29terrific. Hats off to Major League
- 3:31Baseball. I love the Tuesday, Wednesday,
- 3:33Thursday. It really is good.
- 3:35It truly is. And man, oh man, we were
- 3:38entertained some baseball and even last night the Yankees and
- 3:40the Red Sox. This schlitter character.
- 3:43You got to be awful cut. Careful how you say his name for
- 3:46starters in this business, but regardless of how he pronounces
- 3:50her name, how difficult it is for everybody.
- 3:53Struggle 12. Struggle 12 Trent.
- 3:56You know, two things that really stood out.
- 3:58And starting with Schlitter, I remember the first extended time
- 4:02that I saw him was when we were out in Las Vegas, was it?
- 4:05And watching him next to a Yankee fan and I knew he threw
- 4:11heart, but boy, he had such command.
- 4:13Now this was a random July start, right?
- 4:15But watching him in that moment, like.
- 4:17He Remember Me because he got an unforgettable name.
- 4:20Absolutely. That goes kind of handed in and
- 4:22he's a Yankee. I mean, they all kind of stacked
- 4:24together. But watching that guy, I think
- 4:26they were playing the Blue Jays at memory service.
- 4:28Regardless, just how good and how command he was.
- 4:30Now it's also scary. That's a young guy that throws
- 4:33super hard. He's going to go through an
- 4:36extended period now throwing more pitches than he ever has in
- 4:38his career. And what we also kind of know
- 4:41about these guys is we know how almost inevitably.
- 4:43He catches up with him, sadly. It's it's going to happen at
- 4:46some point. But that aside the other part,
- 4:49how did this Red Sox team get to the playoffs?
- 4:51Well, yeah. I know Roman Anthony is the big
- 4:54blow and his injury, but boy, you just looked at that lineup
- 4:58and like, I know that guy. He played for the Twins for a
- 5:00couple weeks. He sucked.
- 5:02He's starting in a playoff game for that.
- 5:04That was a huge take away. Watching these three games is
- 5:06Cora I. Mean credit.
- 5:08To him, you look at the rotation.
- 5:10I mean, they had to throw early out there.
- 5:12We talked about his game Long goes back to.
- 5:14And he wasn't awful. And he struck out six Yankees.
- 5:17He. And, and he's got a good future,
- 5:19you know, he does. He'll be a 3-4, you know, maybe
- 5:21a three is kind of the best end. But he's going to be a solid,
- 5:23dependable guy, you think, going forward now they get healthy.
- 5:27And they did. I think that has part of to to
- 5:29do with you the answer to your question, How'd they get here?
- 5:31Bregman got healthy at the right time.
- 5:33Yeah, he was terrific. Durant had a nice year.
- 5:35Trevor Story was out of his mind.
- 5:36He really had a good really had a good run.
- 5:39But the runners over the Yankees move N they will get on an
- 5:43airplane and head to Canada, take on the Blue Jays, the Cubs
- 5:46and the Brewers, play Mariners, get the Detroit Tigers and maybe
- 5:50the best series of them all. Maybe not fair to say because
- 5:54they've got a chance to all be good.
- 5:55But Phillies, Dodgers, to me, is appointment TV.
- 5:58It really is. You said it yesterday.
- 6:00I didn't want to go there, but I think you're right.
- 6:03Those are the two best. Teams, I think they are, Trent.
- 6:05Two most complete teams after the Phillies lost Wheelers after
- 6:11that happened, it just took me a while and OK, they they're
- 6:14beaten up on the Marlins and Nationals.
- 6:15OK, the Mets are falling apart. I the Braves are awful this
- 6:19year. Maybe that was the reason I
- 6:21couldn't get. There the best team that maybe
- 6:22the second best team in that division wasn't this year, Not
- 6:25the Mets, the Marlins. Yeah, Look at their finish.
- 6:27Yeah, we just gloss over them because they're always bad,
- 6:30right? They're always the Rockies, the
- 6:31game in together, They're both. Well, they've got 2 World Series
- 6:33somehow 222, right? Unthinkable.
- 6:38It is. It really is.
- 6:40I just there was something with that Phillies team, but the back
- 6:43end of the bullpen with obviously Duran, who I do
- 6:45incredibly well from his days in Minnesota.
- 6:47The way that bullpens together still the depth of the rotation,
- 6:50what they had and some of those guys having career years this
- 6:52year. Are you surprised or is it just
- 6:54a betting market that the Dodgers are?
- 6:56Favored. I think it's just the Dodgers.
- 6:57They're they're a public team. They're public team.
- 6:59They just blindly make them the. Favors.
- 7:02Yeah. And they got all the big names.
- 7:03They got Otani, they got all the big names.
- 7:05And I think that's part, I think it's gonna be a hell of a
- 7:07series. I wish it was seven games.
- 7:09You know, we don't get that. We get another 5 pack, but it
- 7:12gets under way tomorrow. Not today.
- 7:14Now we can bitch about today because there's nothing until
- 7:179:30 tonight anyways. We're out of Survivor.
- 7:21We've we, we made. October, Oh Kenny, Kenny, Kenny.
- 7:24But it went down in flames Sunday night.
- 7:26We had we went down with our first entry.
- 7:28We had the tie. Tie's lost in circa.
- 7:31And look, 99 times out of 100, I, I, I swear to God, I think
- 7:35that the Rams beat the beat the Niners, but they had Kyle
- 7:39Shanahan. You know who had a bad day
- 7:41yesterday? Brock Purdy.
- 7:45He's it's he's not a system quarterback.
- 7:46He's better than that. Rock Purdy's starting to look
- 7:50like he might be in the right place.
- 7:52Yeah, I mean, Mack Jones was a bust.
- 7:55And maybe that's something to do with Belichick, not the
- 7:57quarterback whisper some thought he was right.
- 7:59But Mack Jones, who Shanahan could have drafted, Don't
- 8:02forget. That so, yeah, yeah, absolutely.
- 8:04Because didn't it go Lawrence, Lance Wilson or Wilson?
- 8:11Lance Wilson. Wilson went to The Jets, Yes,
- 8:16Lance went to the Niners. And like in the mid teens, maybe
- 8:2314, Mac Jones was still there. And apparently that's the guy
- 8:27Belichick one of the whole time. Many times.
- 8:29You heard that, of course. There, you're right.
- 8:31Our guy was still there. We didn't think he'd be there.
- 8:33He like went 141516 somewhere in there to the Patriots, but
- 8:37Shanahan could have had him in the past.
- 8:39Now Brock Purdy's had a heck of a start to his career.
- 8:41But, and I say but now, and I was never about, I was never one
- 8:44of those butt guys. When I see Mac Jones come in and
- 8:47do what he's done as a Niner with 0 help, I mean the skill,
- 8:52the talent on that roster. You look at some of the guys
- 8:55that they were down, Ricky Pearsall, Brandon Ayuk,
- 8:59Jennings, George Kittle, 4 offensive weapons, catching the
- 9:05football, and Matt Jones is doing what he does up and down
- 9:08the field. Didn't he start like 11 for 13
- 9:10in the game last night? He was tremendous.
- 9:12He was tremendous and he got, he was incredibly banged up with
- 9:16that calf. I mean when he was swatting the
- 9:17ball away and he could see afterwards he's just grimacing
- 9:19as he had to jump up and volleyball spike it down to the
- 9:22down to the turf. That guy, My question about Mac,
- 9:25I mean, who dresses him, by the way?
- 9:28Did you see what he's wearing? What do you mean?
- 9:29Oh, God. Oh, pregame.
- 9:30Yeah. Jesus.
- 9:33Not for me. Yeah, not for my.
- 9:35I just, I couldn't believe it. That's normally not where I go,
- 9:37but I mean, my God. You know, last year there was a
- 9:40lot of talk of, all right, McVeigh has figured out
- 9:43Shanahan. We also remember what happened
- 9:46to San Francisco last year. Yeah, and those two games where
- 9:49they were decimated, that was the reason that I hated your
- 9:53pick. That was coupled with a
- 9:55divisional game. You know my thoughts on that.
- 9:56I if unless I absolutely have to, I absolutely always like to
- 10:01stay away from divisional games. But on top of it, Shannah has
- 10:04old McVeigh. Shannah has a hell of a coach,
- 10:06man. What does he want?
- 10:07Yeah, Fifties, 12 and four now. Something like that.
- 10:10And McVeigh, Everybody loves. Everybody loves him.
- 10:13That fourth down call, what are you doing with?
- 10:15Me. Come on.
- 10:16Well, wait, let's run. They've stopped the run all
- 10:19night long. Let's run right at Fred Warner.
- 10:20I got an idea. I am the smartest man here.
- 10:23Look at me. I'm Sean McVeigh. 54 Let's find
- 10:26him and just run right at him. Oh, with a good idea.
- 10:28Yeah, I like that, Stafford didn't say.
- 10:30Hey, coach, that's something else for us.
- 10:32Oh. My God, just I like the fact
- 10:34that we're going for the win. I did selfishly hated selfishly
- 10:38because of the Italian survivor. You're out.
- 10:40Yes, Yeah. I like the fact they were going
- 10:43for it. But the play call, my God.
- 10:45And then the kick to start overtime.
- 10:47He can't get into the landing zone.
- 10:49My God, set him up at the 40. Eddie Pinero, your guy from the
- 10:52Bears, 59 yard, What is Are the balls that much different this
- 10:58year? The kick.
- 10:59The K balls now? K balls, Yeah, They have to be,
- 11:02right? Well, we're seeing guys like
- 11:03Eddie Pinero last week. But and he had an extra 510
- 11:06yards on that ball. Kairos Santos had what, a 51
- 11:09yarder? That guy can't make 50 and he
- 11:11made it with ease. I I think there's helium in
- 11:13there. Something, maybe it is helium,
- 11:16the fumble at the one after he got punched in the head, he did,
- 11:19but it's it's in a scrum. You're not going to pick up
- 11:21everything, but you're going in. You know, I was screaming at the
- 11:25TV. Let the play clock run down, let
- 11:26the play clock and then call time out.
- 11:28You had three of them. Don't give them any time out.
- 11:31You're going to score from the one.
- 11:32Well, they fumble from the one, but the Rams lose, the Niners
- 11:35win. I have no idea how this Niners
- 11:37team is has the record that they are.
- 11:39And once they get their guys back right, is this a team that
- 11:42we've just and they've got the easiest schedule in football?
- 11:45What we talked about before the year, I don't think either of us
- 11:47really like them. I.
- 11:48Didn't like. I still don't like the Niners.
- 11:50But is it so next week they go to Tampa?
- 11:53That's a tough game. Yeah.
- 11:55After that, Santa's got to go to Seattle this week.
- 11:57Speaking of tough games. But they're starting a November
- 12:00schedule at the Giants, home for the Rams, at the Cardinals,
- 12:05Panthers, Browns, Titans. Oh, God, They go to the Colts,
- 12:08which was looks more difficult, and they finish up at home
- 12:11against the Bears and at home against the Seahawks.
- 12:13It's not daunting. No, it looks as though, I mean,
- 12:17it's early, but they're on the they're on the right path to a
- 12:20playoff berth of, if not a divisional ground I had.
- 12:24Another thing I wanted to throw your way as overtime was
- 12:26starting and we're seeing NFL teams now with both teams being
- 12:29able to possess regardless of what happens that they're
- 12:32playing defense first. But coupled with the kickoff
- 12:36rules, the 10 minute overtime which almost came in again, is
- 12:41that the right choice? I don't think it is, Trent.
- 12:42I think taking the ball in this scenario is the right way to go
- 12:46about it because you get the potential for the third
- 12:48possession that's absolutely huge if a couple of field goals
- 12:51or even a couple. Of Niners defense was just on
- 12:54the field don't forget because they kicked the game tying field
- 12:57goal with what, 2 seconds left? And the other component is these
- 13:01new kickoff rules. I think that's huge.
- 13:03We don't see anybody starting inside their 25 and it's so rare
- 13:08you're starting between the 30 and 40.
- 13:10See, most of the time, do you like him?
- 13:12I do. I do.
- 13:13I like him a lot. It's added some excitement.
- 13:14I'm with you. You got guys that can stick it
- 13:17there at the 2 yard line and have him roll in like Aubrey,
- 13:19who's tremendous at that. Good God he's something.
- 13:21What a weapon. You look at those things
- 13:24altogether I think NFL coaches have this wrong.
- 13:27I think the right thing to do in this version of overtime
- 13:31college, absolutely play defense make make sense.
- 13:33Yes, absolutely. Starting at the 25 yard line in
- 13:36today's environment of the NFL and if everything stays the
- 13:39same, you take the ball first, go round there minimum, you feel
- 13:43like you're going to get a field goal and then you know, on the
- 13:46other way, you know what you're playing kind of defensively,
- 13:48what you're doing. And if you get the ball the
- 13:50third time, yeah, there might only be a couple minutes left,
- 13:52but you still have the opportunity at that point, field
- 13:55goal wins it. Take your time out Eugene Repay
- 13:57will join Trenton I on the other side Des Moines Register we will
- 14:01preview what's coming up Cincinnati and Iowa State did
- 14:04you check the point spread on that this.
- 14:06Morning I did. Now I got an alert and I want to
- 14:09see now. So what?
- 14:10What did you set it up for? So basically if there isn't an
- 14:14Iowa, Iowa State game, if there is a point move, not 1/2 point,
- 14:17but a point move, I get a little alert on my phone and it's. 1
- 14:201/2 everywhere. So there was a 2 1/2 that popped
- 14:23this morning. Came right back down.
- 14:25Very. Yeah.
- 14:26So there was quick buy back. So a lot of times I'm looking
- 14:29where that came from, nothing at any of the big ones.
- 14:33It came in somewhere and was quick quickly gobbled up.
- 14:35So that is the point of resistance if you will.
- 14:38Well. ESPN bet is still at 2 1/2.
- 14:40So maybe that's where it came from.
- 14:41I was that one. So more steam on Cincinnati?
- 14:46Well, I'll tell you every everybody in the gambling space
- 14:49loves Cincinnati. I know Corleone looks as though
- 14:51he's going to play, the Dawn is going to play.
- 14:54He's defensive lineman #2 he's a hell of a player.
- 14:57This after next year, see him in the NFL.
- 14:59You'll hear Eugene repay next. Eugene Trenton, Ken, thank you
- 15:02as always for finding time for us again this week.
- 15:06I guess obviously the big story going into the week is going to
- 15:09be the secondary and how much depth there actually is there.
- 15:12We've certainly seen some good things out of some of the
- 15:15newcomers or some of the guys, guys that have spent some time
- 15:17in the system. But man, oh man, replacing both
- 15:21of your starting cornerbacks, I don't care what team it is,
- 15:24that's a tough hill to overcome. How big of a challenge will it
- 15:29be for the newcomers that are asked to go in and play in place
- 15:33of Williams and, of course, Cooper?
- 15:35Yeah, devastating break for Iowa State to just lose not only your
- 15:39starting quarterback, but two all Big 12 caliber guys and just
- 15:42days apart. And Johnson Williams and
- 15:44Jeremiah Cooper, not only are they just so talented, but
- 15:47they're also just the cornerstones of leaders of that
- 15:49defense. So when to replace those two
- 15:51guys? You're asking for a tall task
- 15:53for the guys that are after them like Trey Bell, Clinton Taylor
- 15:57Junior, Benny Nagoy and also David Coffey, who's questionable
- 16:01for Saturday's game. But it's going to be a steep
- 16:04climb for those guys. But you know, if there's
- 16:07anything I would say to show him last year, it's the next man up.
- 16:09And and no matter who's out, they're going to have to find a
- 16:12way. You know, we the headliner this
- 16:15week has been the ACL injuries to those guys and obviously
- 16:18playing last week without Cooper and now this week going forward
- 16:20without Williams. Still, they're also banged up up
- 16:23front. You know, McDonough, he's been
- 16:25banged up. Orange has been banged up and
- 16:27maybe they feel OK about the depth and certainly with Trey
- 16:30Bell going in their cornerback, you feel OK.
- 16:32What about the depth up front? You know, if this is nagging in,
- 16:35you know, Orange, he's able to play, but he can only give you
- 16:3840 snaps a game and and McDonough can only get you 30.
- 16:41What about the depth up front of the defensive line?
- 16:43Because for me might even be more concerning than what
- 16:46they're dealing with right now with the quarterbacks.
- 16:48Yeah, especially it all starts up front on defense and to have
- 16:51Dominic Orange, you know, go out for a second there with a an
- 16:54apparent injury, maybe his neck or shoulder, whatever it may be.
- 16:58He was probable on the initial injury report and he was off
- 17:01after that. But you still got a question,
- 17:02how healthy, how functional is he going to be?
- 17:05And just looking at the defensive line, there were some
- 17:07of the younger guys have been emerging like Kamari Moore has
- 17:09been playing a lot in that no spot for Dominic Orange and he's
- 17:13played well as a freshman. But then also looking at guys
- 17:16like Jason J Gilbert, he's coming along silently.
- 17:19Well, he's the guy that you know, behind Tomato McDonough
- 17:22and and Kenna is Yagu. He's a guy that has 10
- 17:26quarterback hurries this season. He's been producing.
- 17:28He's another young talent that they were very high on Elijah
- 17:31Cornell as well. I think that's another group
- 17:33that's going to have to grow up fast.
- 17:35Obviously the problem isn't as big as it is at secondary, but
- 17:40from what I've we've seen so far and just early indications,
- 17:44those younger guys, they can play.
- 17:45They can play, but to what degree and will they be able to
- 17:49handle like a higher snap count in the event that Orange is out?
- 17:51We'll have to see. Cummings Coleman is now out.
- 17:55He was. He was not in a designated out,
- 17:57I don't think on Wednesday when it came out.
- 18:00The first availability report came out.
- 18:02Yesterday he was downgraded to out.
- 18:04Do you know what's going on there, Eugene?
- 18:07Yeah, to be honest, just looking at comedy's Coleman, I was
- 18:10honestly shocked that he was even in consideration, just
- 18:14looking the way that he came out with an apparent shoulder injury
- 18:17in his arm, was in a sling when you when he returned to the
- 18:20sidelines after being reviewed in the medical tent and reviewed
- 18:23in the locker room. So for him to be questionable, I
- 18:26was shocked. But him being downgraded, I I'm
- 18:28not surprised with the extent of his injury or you know, how long
- 18:33they'll be out for. They won't report, but I am not
- 18:37too shocked that he's not available for Saturday.
- 18:40You know, Cincinnati is a team that a lot of my memory of them
- 18:44is what we saw in week one against Nebraska where they
- 18:47threw for 69 yards. Well, since then they figured it
- 18:50out because Soresby has put up some ridiculous numbers as a
- 18:52team. They're up to 22nd in the
- 18:54country in passing offense after throwing for 69 in game #1
- 18:59Soresby, he looks like he's on fire.
- 19:00He's got some weapons out wide and definitely looks like a
- 19:03different one that we saw that opening Thursday of the season.
- 19:06What's your biggest concern with Cincinnati this week for Iowa
- 19:09State? I'm with you on that.
- 19:11I think my biggest concern is just the way that Cincinnati has
- 19:13been playing as of late. They're bringing with
- 19:15confidence. They're building so much
- 19:17momentum. Looking at them last year, I
- 19:19wasn't too impressed with them. And then that first week did not
- 19:23look impressed at all. It was it felt like there was
- 19:26going to be oh, no, more of the same below 500.
- 19:28Cincinnati Torres V is he's a dependable guy, but it doesn't
- 19:32look like you're going to take a step forward.
- 19:34But just the way that they've been playing and I and I felt
- 19:36like that when at Kansas, the way that they were able to do
- 19:39it, not only on the road, but in a back and forth game where they
- 19:42had to score last minute. That was impressive.
- 19:44And Torres V has just been on fire.
- 19:46And it all starts with your quarterback and the way that
- 19:48he's playing. He's been setting the tone and
- 19:50he's able to spread his ball around to his receivers.
- 19:52There isn't really a go to guy. So just being able to contain
- 19:57him, that'll be the key for Iowa State, especially after he put
- 19:59up 440 total yards the last game.
- 20:02True dual threat quarterback, he's leading his team in
- 20:04rushing. He's got a 12:50 touchdown
- 20:06interception ratio. Soresby Rather is off to a good
- 20:10start. All right, let's talk about the
- 20:12offense for Iowa State. Obviously, so well was the story
- 20:15coming out of the Arizona game as he merged in a big, big way.
- 20:19What does he do for an encore, Eugene?
- 20:22Yeah, that's that's a great question.
- 20:24I would love to see him build off of it.
- 20:25I think that, I don't know if we can say that he's arrived yet,
- 20:28but he's definitely turned a corner.
- 20:30I felt like last week's game was huge for him, not only just
- 20:33getting his footing under, but getting his footing under
- 20:35himself in a big way after putting up 0 catches, 0
- 20:39receiving yards in the first two games and then only getting
- 20:42involved here and there in games 3 and 4.
- 20:44But now to come out like that against Arizona under the lights
- 20:48put up a massive performance. I think he builds off of his
- 20:51game. I think the ability for him to
- 20:53just be that deep threat went up one-on-one catches, but he also
- 20:57showcased some of that speed as well when he caught that slant
- 21:00pass and then took off for 52 yards and made some Arizona
- 21:03defenders missed. So he's an exciting guy.
- 21:05If him and Xavier Townsend can start to get going, especially
- 21:08at this point of the year, it feels like the offense is going
- 21:11to have to step things up with the injuries on defense.
- 21:14But if those transfers are starting to get clicking on top
- 21:17of your talented to the tight ends and guys like Brett
- 21:20Eskeldson and Dom Overby continuing to make plays here
- 21:23and there, that'll only be huge for Iowa State.
- 21:25So with the return of Trevor Bohr, who is out there, they
- 21:28kind of have a rotation in place upfront with that offensive
- 21:31line. Kind of what would you like to
- 21:33see with that rotation upfront? All six of those guys are going
- 21:36to play at varying times, Boniface in the middle and of
- 21:39course what they do on the outside.
- 21:40Do you think they have the rotation set or is there still
- 21:42some tweaking that needs to be done?
- 21:45It seems like they're still tweaking a little bit just to
- 21:47figure out like the ideal configuration.
- 21:49But it it sounds like just from talking to players and coaches
- 21:52that they want to keep guys fresh.
- 21:54And honestly, I'm surprised that they've been able to rotate so
- 21:56effectively as as they've been able to do it.
- 21:59I guess it is a credit to the offensive line room and just
- 22:02kind of a culture for Iowa State because you really need the
- 22:04right mindset to have to have guys to buy in and being OK with
- 22:08being rotated out or or watching another guy take your position
- 22:11for a time period or so. But right now or just with the
- 22:15way that it's worked with Trevor Borer, Dylan Barrett, Brendan
- 22:18Black, just Jim Boniface has been the constant at center.
- 22:23I was surprised with the fact that they they kept Boniface
- 22:25there, but he's played well at center.
- 22:27It kind of seemed like maybe Barrett would hold it down or or
- 22:31Boniface was only just a placeholder.
- 22:33But when I got like that from playing, well, the guards, you
- 22:36have that battle. But so far they've been working
- 22:38it out. Indeed they have and and Rocco
- 22:41Beck is off to another Rocco Beck type of year.
- 22:43He doesn't have the stats. Maybe that while you when it
- 22:46comes to some of the college quarterbacks and you know, stats
- 22:49what a lot of people look at and I know that they came out
- 22:51somebody put out their top 25 in college football.
- 22:54He was the 24th ranked. But statistically that's kind of
- 22:58where he's at. But having said that, a lot of
- 23:00teams would love to have him because he's such a this
- 23:04leadership, I think him elevates him, but certainly higher than
- 23:08where he was ranked on that report.
- 23:09How about that one, Eugene? Oh man, you give a guy like
- 23:12that, he's already as competitive as he is.
- 23:14You want to give him more ammunition in the locker room or
- 23:17more bulletin board material? I would love to see how he
- 23:20responds to that. But yeah, I thought that ranking
- 23:22was a little low, just like you said.
- 23:24I think his statistics might not be the sexiest, but when the
- 23:28lights are on or what, it's clench time.
- 23:29When it's in the fourth quarter, second-half, whatever it may be,
- 23:32his ability to just command the huddle, just be that calming
- 23:35presence whenever he sets foot on the field.
- 23:37It's just so big for Iowa State. He's been such a big part of
- 23:40their success. Just looking back at last year
- 23:42when he orchestrated 4 go ahead drives in the fourth quarter,
- 23:46like you would love a quarterback like that.
- 23:48So I think his intangibles and and of course all the non
- 23:52measurables that helps boost them higher than what his stats
- 23:56may indicate and what the ranking by ESPN may indicate.
- 24:00You look at this, certainly looks like it's going to be a
- 24:02Rocco game to get it done. Last time they went on the road
- 24:05for a true Rd. game, not one in Ireland when there was half the
- 24:08people recycling fans at the building.
- 24:10Didn't go very well against Arkansas State.
- 24:12They let the Red Wolves hang around.
- 24:13And if it would have, should have, that could have definitely
- 24:15been a different final than what we saw in that one.
- 24:18Any concerns making a way over to Nippert Stadium?
- 24:20It's not, you know, one of the more difficult environments.
- 24:22It's not a huge stadium by any means, but just going on the
- 24:25road because the last time it didn't go very well for Iowa
- 24:28State. Yeah, not so much offensive
- 24:31hiccups. I mean, I just feel like overall
- 24:33it's going to be difficult. Like I feel the way that
- 24:36Cincinnati is playing right now and just how confident they are.
- 24:39They're they're peeking at a good time and Iowa State is
- 24:42limping in with two key injuries and they're going to have to re
- 24:45establish that defensive identity quickly.
- 24:47There's going to be very, very little room for error.
- 24:51I feel like cornerback and just the secondary, if you're off by
- 24:54a second drop by 6 inches or you're in the wrong place, then
- 24:57the other team can take off for a big play or a big touchdown.
- 25:00So they're not going to make it easy for Rocco back.
- 25:03I I wouldn't be surprised if it's like a back and forth shoot
- 25:06out a little bit, but you have confidence when you have Rocco
- 25:10back. In just what he's shown in close
- 25:12games in world record, he's won nine of his last 10 games on the
- 25:16road. Like there's a reliability
- 25:18there, but what will the overall product look like?
- 25:20That's what I'm most curious about.
- 25:22Has Nagoya played this year? Do you recall Eugene?
- 25:24Because I I kind of think he's going to see the field tomorrow.
- 25:27Has he played? Yeah, he's definitely going to
- 25:30have to see the field tomorrow. He has played, I was looking at
- 25:33Pro Football Focus and he's actually played 59, a total of
- 25:3759 stats this season, but 52 of them were on special teams and
- 25:42only seven were on defense. So the conversion project,
- 25:45they're going to have to speed it up a lot faster than probably
- 25:48they would have liked. No doubt
- 25:50eugenerepaydesmoinesregister.com him and Travis Hines do a
- 25:54terrific job of following the cyclonesdesmoinesregister.com
- 25:58Eugene will impose on you again next week.
- 26:00Thank you for doing this. As always, we'll talk to you in
- 26:03seven days. We'll read you
- 26:04daily@desmoinesregister.com. Thank you, Eugene.
- 26:07Appreciate it. Thank you guys.
- 26:09It was a good time talking with Miller and Condon.
- 26:11Good stuff. Thank you, buddy.
- 26:12There's a promo. We appreciate that.
- 26:14Eugene repay on the cyclones. We'll take the time out.
- 26:18Mike palm joins us next off to Vegas.
- 26:20We will go. It's the Iowa sports radio
- 26:22network. I'm Hillary convin welcome back
- 26:26Iowa sports radio network. Des Moines sports station one O
- 26:296.3 KX. Don't Trent and I with you until
- 26:312O clock Bama Bob our number 2 along with Tom Caker Hawks on a
- 26:36bye. We Trent and I will make our
- 26:38picks about 10 minutes before 2. Circa Sports sponsor those.
- 26:41Speaking of Circa, Mike Palm is the Vice President of Operations
- 26:45at Circa Sports and he joins us. Mike, I know that.
- 26:48I mean, Survivor, you don't even have to have your entries in yet
- 26:52for this week, but we've already had a game and I have to believe
- 26:55it was going to be a pretty popular game.
- 26:58My Circus Survivor 2025 came to a crashing end last night and
- 27:03I'm guessing I'm not alone. And 20% of the remaining entries
- 27:08you think would be that many? There was what, 12,000 I think
- 27:11left going into it somewhere around 3000 maybe?
- 27:14Is that a fair estimate on how many people would have been on
- 27:16the Rams last night? How?
- 27:18Many do you think 25%? I can't really comment because
- 27:23it's, it's important to people to know how many people were out
- 27:28and, and that can't be revealed until after all the picks are
- 27:30in. But there's been, I've heard
- 27:35guesses anywhere from 15% to 30%.
- 27:39And so, you know, it, it, it was a big wide range because I know
- 27:43people don't like to play Thursday games or they don't
- 27:45like to play division games. And yet all that injury news was
- 27:48compelling. So it.
- 27:49Sure was. Definitely.
- 27:51It's definitely a game that's, you know, significant in the
- 27:54course of the year. Speaking of that, the Thursday
- 27:57game element to it, how much do you believe that just it being a
- 28:01Thursday game alone, point spread could be the same, the
- 28:03rest of the card could be the same.
- 28:05How much does that impact because, well, Ken, he sent me
- 28:08his entry right away because he said, well, it's a Thursday,
- 28:11Gabe, we want to get it in there beforehand.
- 28:12But how many people stay away either forget the deadline, just
- 28:16don't want to deal with getting it in early, those kind of
- 28:18things. Do you think that the Thursday
- 28:20games impact Survivor entries? Yeah, it's so it's not as as big
- 28:26of a deterrent as obviously the millions, because if the
- 28:30millions, if you're going to use Thursday, you have to have all
- 28:32of your picks in. And so for the other four, you
- 28:34don't get the latest injury news up through Saturday afternoon.
- 28:37But typically you don't see it used that frequently.
- 28:41I know we saw use with the Eagles in the opening game
- 28:43against Dallas. That's also a situation where
- 28:46you could read by two. So that might have affected some
- 28:49of that. But obviously you see it, you
- 28:52see it used probably three times as much as you see it used in in
- 28:57the circum millions. We'll get to back to football in
- 29:00a second. Baseball.
- 29:01We are down to the divisional round now.
- 29:03Eight teams left, three, I think you would call them, probably
- 29:06public brands. The Dodgers, the Yankees still
- 29:09alive and the Cubs. This might be a pretty busy
- 29:12divisional round series for sports book operators, Mike.
- 29:15How about that? And the match ups are compelling
- 29:17as well. Well, you have a, you know, you
- 29:20have a what's become the rivalry in the NL Central the last few
- 29:23years, the Cubs and the Brewers as the Cardinals have sort of
- 29:26fallen off. And so that's a big regional
- 29:28match up there. Yankees obviously are going to
- 29:32attract a lot of attention and playing Toronto, the national
- 29:35team of Canada, that's a matchup Detroit, Seattle, probably the
- 29:40the the series with the least interest of the four.
- 29:43And then, you know, everybody thinks the Dodgers and and
- 29:46Phillies are the national championship series.
- 29:48And in fact, I'm not so sure that's true.
- 29:50But every single game should be blockbuster and Katniss viewing
- 29:54in that series. It's a compelling pitching
- 29:56matchups and and you know, 2 two line UPS that are certainly
- 30:01explosive with a ton of superstars.
- 30:03So yeah, I thought the Wild Card series were terrific.
- 30:07We got three out of the four to go to the third game and I and I
- 30:09hope the Division Series are just as compelling.
- 30:12In the American League, if I forced you right now, you have
- 30:14to make a bet on one of the underdogs to win the series.
- 30:17Blue Jays currently plus 1:30 at Circa, plus 155 on the Tigers.
- 30:21He had to do it right now. Which underdog you have bitten
- 30:24to win the series? I would have to take, I would
- 30:28take the Tigers and, and, and I say that because I think I can
- 30:32win two of the games with Google.
- 30:34And so then I need to win two out of the other 5 right after
- 30:38Gausman. And I'm not a big Gausman guys,
- 30:40you know, after Gausman, then what for Taraka, maybe you, you
- 30:44let you let the Yankees get their groove back right by
- 30:48getting out of that series. And and yet I couldn't believe
- 30:51the Yankees open $1.50 favorite in the series.
- 30:53I mean, I'm, I'm, I'm thinking that that it's to pick them or
- 30:56maybe the Yankees $1.15 or twenty $1.50 is really strong.
- 31:01So maybe it almost, it makes it unbekable for me.
- 31:04I would have. I might have laid $1.15, but
- 31:06certainly not $1.50. Let's do the the Cubs and the
- 31:09Brewers. I don't think there's been a
- 31:10starter announced yet, at least there hasn't been before we went
- 31:12on the air for the Cubs. Correct me if I'm wrong.
- 31:15I don't. I mean, it might be calling Ray,
- 31:17that might be where they're forced to go.
- 31:19But as you mentioned, it's a terrific Central Division rival.
- 31:22Do you have a lean in that one at all?
- 31:23My Cubs, Brewers. Eileen Brewers because of no
- 31:27Horton. I think if you had Kate Horton,
- 31:30it becomes a pick em cheap price dollar 15 on the Brewers.
- 31:33Who are the one seed. Yeah, it's Colin Ray in a
- 31:36bullpen gig, right? I mean, you try to get Colin Ray
- 31:38through three innings and then I take the key to the series is
- 31:44Quinn Priester. Can he translate that regular
- 31:47season because he's going to get 2 starts, You know, if it goes,
- 31:50it goes six games, I would think.
- 31:52Can he translate that success? They won 13 starts in a row of
- 31:55his starts in a row into into this.
- 31:57Peralta has been better this year.
- 31:59You have to give the advantage to the Brewers in game one.
- 32:01Rested, fully rested bullpen that comes extended to three
- 32:04games by the Padres and the bullpen used a ton.
- 32:08So advantage Milwaukee game more than I think advantage Milwaukee
- 32:11series. One who jump over to a little
- 32:13college football start on the local front, Iowa off Iowa
- 32:17State, they go to Cincinnati. It's been annoying.
- 32:19Odd point spread. Iowa State's opened up.
- 32:21Now we've seen some steam on Cincinnati.
- 32:24There was a couple of 2 1/2 that popped up this morning in the
- 32:26market. Those were bought up back to
- 32:28basically 1 1/2 across the board.
- 32:30Mike, what's going on here now? Are you seeing?
- 32:32Is this just public money? Is this sharps?
- 32:34Is this syndicates jumping in? Seems like there's a lot of bear
- 32:37that money out there. Yeah, a lot of sharps, Trent,
- 32:42Every pro I listen to love Cincinnati this week.
- 32:45I don't know, you know what I think about?
- 32:47I think about when they went to, when the Cyclones went to Miami
- 32:50of Ohio. I mean, to Ohio in Athens a
- 32:53couple years ago, remember? And Campbell yelled at the
- 32:55little GIMP. Turn their season around.
- 32:58Remember that. I I this is a huge game for
- 33:02them. This they're supposed to win
- 33:03this game. I don't care about the injury
- 33:05news. You have a defense.
- 33:08Yeah. I don't know.
- 33:10I'm I, I I'm one of the ones that snatched up 2 1/2.
- 33:14I couldn't believe it. It went the other way.
- 33:17But I'll be wrong and everybody else can be right if I was to
- 33:20lose this game. Miami, FL State Will that be the
- 33:23biggest game of the day for you guys tomorrow?
- 33:29That the loss at Virginia takes some of the shine on this game.
- 33:33Alabama, Vanderbilt, really interesting game.
- 33:37And Bobby has a really interesting character in terms
- 33:39of the Heisman race. You know, he's sitting out there
- 33:42anywhere from 18 to 20 to 1. I mean, if they could somehow
- 33:46beat Alabama, I almost think he becomes he becomes the front
- 33:50runner in this thing. Yeah, it's probably, it's
- 33:56probably Miami and it's probably Miami and Florida State.
- 34:00But but you know, I guess the Florida brands no good anymore
- 34:06for Texas. Florida.
- 34:08It's it's you know, it's obviously not the kind of
- 34:10schedule that we had right the week before.
- 34:14I would also say, you know, it's a really interesting spot for
- 34:17Illinois. It's a really tricky spot going
- 34:20to Purdue and a huge sandwich. You you rebound and you beat USC
- 34:25on the national stage and that then that morning game and you
- 34:27got Ohio State waiting on deck. And Bielema has had no success
- 34:31against Purdue since taken over at Illinois.
- 34:34Very tricky spot here for Illinois.
- 34:35So I got beat by that Purdue team a year ago.
- 34:38Illinois should have and the one that went down to the wire, I
- 34:41got one more college 1 for you. Your your alumnus, Notre Dame,
- 34:46Boise, the Notre Dame defense stinks, yet they can score with
- 34:50maybe anybody in the country. The total in this game, 62 1/2
- 34:56doesn't look like there's going to be any weather anything like
- 34:58that. Boy, this thing just feels like
- 35:00it's shoot out. It's up to 21 in terms of the
- 35:02spread, but I got my eye on that total.
- 35:04I don't know if it's a shoot out, but I mean, like Arkansas
- 35:08wasn't a shoot out. It flies over.
- 35:09I mean, did the Notre Dame games, anybody could put up 21
- 35:13on Notre Dame, right? And Boise isn't totally devoid
- 35:17of ability here. They didn't.
- 35:18They weren't ready. They weren't ready with the new
- 35:20quarterback. They weren't ready with anything
- 35:21in that opening game against South Florida.
- 35:26But I think this this game has, you know, 4227 written all over
- 35:30it. And I agree with you.
- 35:32I just keep betting Notre Dame overs until you lose 1.
- 35:35It's like I wonders a couple years back.
- 35:38Let's go over the NFL, Mike. It sounds like Max Crosby's now
- 35:42on the the injury report. Bowers hasn't practiced all
- 35:45week. Colts, I think they opened a lot
- 35:47of people's eyes even in defeat last week.
- 35:50They host the Raiders. Raiders playing at 10:00 on
- 35:53their body, 20 O clock time. This seems like a spot to take
- 35:57the Colts. How about that?
- 35:58Yeah, I like 7 - 1 O 5 here because I feared this game would
- 36:02go to 8, seven and a half. Eight.
- 36:04Colts just take advantage of all the mistakes.
- 36:06They should have beaten the Rams.
- 36:09Daniel Jones has been terrific. And the Raiders just give you
- 36:11opportunity after opportunity after opportunity.
- 36:14And all the Colts do or take advantage of everybody's
- 36:16mistakes. So I like the Colts to win big
- 36:18here. Also in the NFL, it's Monday
- 36:21night, but Kansas City, well, now they're completely fixed.
- 36:25No more worries after one good performance against the Ravens,
- 36:28yet you got Jacksonville on the other side.
- 36:30I don't like them, but they're forcing turnovers.
- 36:32They've been very, very good at getting points off those
- 36:35turnovers. They're at home.
- 36:37You know, Duval's going to be fired up for this one. 3 1/2
- 36:40just it's almost kind of stinky here that sniffing this one out.
- 36:43Something seems off in this spread.
- 36:46Two weeks in a row, I'm going to play a suspicious line with
- 36:48Jacksonville. I took 3 1/2.
- 36:50Why would it be 3 1/2? It should have been 6 at San
- 36:52Francisco. The defense is very good.
- 36:55Let's let's just say that the defense is very good and you're
- 36:59right, they're opportunistic as well and at home to get more
- 37:03than a field goal. I have to take it again and
- 37:07maybe I'll be wrong, but that was a pretty easy cover and win
- 37:09last week and it's flattered by the 49ers performance last
- 37:13night. Fairpoint our final couple of
- 37:15minutes here. They're going to drop the puck
- 37:17next week start of the regular season, even though Ben McDonald
- 37:21won't be watching you and I will, which was unbelievable,
- 37:25right? Did you is there a team that
- 37:28you're that you're interested in Mike futures with with a price
- 37:32behind it? I mean the the cup can't keep
- 37:34going back to Florida year after year after year.
- 37:37I don't think who do you like? Anybody.
- 37:40Yeah, but you know, I'm going to play Quinnville in the Ducks and
- 37:43maybe they're maybe they're a year away, but three to one to
- 37:45make the playoffs and 100 to 1 to win the Cup.
- 37:48Everybody's so short prices in the beginning, I couldn't find
- 37:51it. I'm looking for somebody at 20
- 37:52to 1. I really don't love anybody.
- 37:54I say to Florida in the regular season before the bark off news,
- 37:58I played under 105 1/2 points. Now that's what down to 96 1/2
- 38:02off the bark off news. I mean, there's a real shot.
- 38:05Or did they struggle to make the playoffs, which is all they want
- 38:08to do here. If they're the second Wild they
- 38:11know. Look at they were the three.
- 38:12They were the three seat out of their division.
- 38:14They don't care if they go on the road every series.
- 38:16They play well. They just want to get into the
- 38:18bracket maybe a little bit harder.
- 38:20No to Chuck till maybe Christmas and now, now no bark off for the
- 38:24regular season. A bark off is the real key loss
- 38:26because he's what the engine that makes that team go.
- 38:28He has been for the last five years.
- 38:30So nothing jumps out at me that I say, oh, there's this team
- 38:35that's maybe pick 3rd or 4th, it's going to win their
- 38:37division. I have.
- 38:39I haven't found it. So we just took the long shot
- 38:41with the Ducks. Good stuff.
- 38:42Any any news on the Iowa app? No, we're still on for the 7th
- 38:49and if I hear anything different I'll let you guys know.
- 38:51Good stuff, Mike, enjoy the weekend.
- 38:53Thank you, partner. Thank you.
- 38:54Thank you. Good.
- 38:55To talk to you, Mike Pom, VP of Operations, it's Circus sports,
- 38:58Circus Sports Iowa or if you're listening across the river,
- 39:00Circus Sports Illinois, the Iowa app, it's days away and sounds
- 39:04like there's going to be some significant promotion behind
- 39:07that. So we'll wait for that news and
- 39:10and even if you're an existing circa customer strength and I
- 39:13both are obviously you're going to have to download your re
- 39:16download your app, the app that you have now on your phone that
- 39:20will no longer work. You're going to have to download
- 39:23it again and. But the one for now works for
- 39:25the weekend. Absolutely does until until the
- 39:27new one's ready to go, you can keep firing away.
- 39:31As I'm doing right now, I got 2 Friday night games I like.
- 39:34Do you like? Can you lay?
- 39:3520 points with BYU. West Virginia is really bad.
- 39:40I know and it's 10:00, 10/30 body clock time for I.
- 39:44I'm chanted. I'm tempted.
- 39:46Hour 2 coming up, Bama Trent and I will kick off the hour talking
- 39:49college football. Tom Cacard on the Hawks, Miller
- 39:51in Condon on Des Moines Sports Station One O 6.3 KX&O.
