- 1:06None. And we are back with the
- 1:49second-half of tonight's panel. All we got 3 Rocky crazy.
- 1:55I got a feeling section Section 1 was a little pain even though
- 2:00they got proud in near the end there, but with these guys here,
- 2:03I love them all. Great to see you all again
- 2:05fellas from 2 DPB tale from the Terradon band.
- 2:11He is unaffiliated but he is everybody's favorite Hokie
- 2:14Twitter follower, Grayson Wimbush.
- 2:16Fellas, how are y'all tonight? Doing good, ready for it?
- 2:22Man can't complain, just happy to be here, you know?
- 2:26It's it's Christmas, fellas. You know, I look forward to this
- 2:29podcast every year. This day is right here is
- 2:32special. I got to I got to say this is a
- 2:34fun group. So stoked.
- 2:36Let's get into it. This is Grace.
- 2:38I think you are the elder statesman here.
- 2:40You've been. You've made all four of these.
- 2:42Or I've made a college experience out of this.
- 2:45I'm thrilled. I shout out to you guys.
- 2:47I mean, they'll do incredible work.
- 2:49Dan does incredible work. Pete and Sam over at 2D do
- 2:52incredible work. I think this this Deus right
- 2:56here definitely is a little bit a little bit more of loose
- 3:00cannons than the than the previous gentleman.
- 3:03So absolutely, absolutely thrilled to be here, guys.
- 3:06Little more. Nothing to lose.
- 3:07Let, let let it fly. See that's.
- 3:09Right. Well, Tally, let's get it
- 3:12started, man, because we got a bunch of stuff to ask these
- 3:15guys. Let's roll.
- 3:17Well, you that you good. Yeah, definitely, man.
- 3:20I was trying to get my yeah, I was trying to get my stuff all
- 3:22fixed back like it was supposed to be.
- 3:26Yeah. So I'll get it started, guys.
- 3:28And just going to say. You know.
- 3:31There we go. We'll get to the state of the
- 3:33program in December. When we get to the state of the
- 3:35program in December, which D lineman will y'all say we'll be
- 3:41talking about Rex Shop this year?
- 3:45We're talking interior or all together.
- 3:49Whatever you want, you can be in JC.
- 3:51'S room who who do did the work? Yeah, you can throw whatever you
- 3:55want out I'm. Going to say the ginger freak
- 3:57dog James the junk one. You got something behind that.
- 4:03You got a reason for us. I mean he.
- 4:07Just the I. Bring the heat, Dan.
- 4:09You know, the the energy had him on the pod really like what he
- 4:14had to say, like where his head was.
- 4:16I think him and Ben, not Ben Brown, he's a pitcher for the
- 4:19Cubs. But the other Ben, the other
- 4:22Ginger, yeah, Ben Bell, they're going to have, I think they're
- 4:25going to, you know, I think we have some guys in the middle.
- 4:28They're going to clog it up. And I think that that that
- 4:30Cephus is going to set those two dudes up to raise hell.
- 4:35Grayson, what you got on this one?
- 4:37Dude, I'm going to say I I really am excited about North
- 4:41Dakota State transfer Cody Huseman.
- 4:45Pardon me, did I butcher that? I'm we're going to learn his
- 4:49name. I'm pull.
- 4:50The Curtis, you pull the Curtis, it's all good.
- 4:52It's it's all good. It's Heisman.
- 4:54Heisman, right? Like like the is it?
- 4:56Actually, Heisman is. That Heisman but not spell the
- 4:59same. Not spell the same, but it's
- 5:00pronounced like Heisman, yeah. Cody Heisman.
- 5:02So yeah, but on the on the defensive line, I'm actually,
- 5:06I'd seen just some of some of the pictures on Instagram.
- 5:09He just kind of seems like he he came to Tech because of JC
- 5:12Price, really likes Coach Price. I think resonates with his game
- 5:15a lot and just kind of reminds me of those those old lunch bell
- 5:19defense guys back in the 90s. He played for Coach Foster's
- 5:24defense. So I'm I'm excited to see that
- 5:25that young man play football. I will pick up what Dan said and
- 5:30go with Ben Bell instead of Dejonkum.
- 5:32I probably would have taken Dejonkum first just because of
- 5:34the production he put on the field at Eastern Michigan.
- 5:37I believe it was as a linebacker, but I think his size
- 5:40and speed he will play really well.
- 5:42But I'll go with Ben Bell. Very productive as a defensive
- 5:45lineman a couple years back at Texas State.
- 5:47Had an injury last year but he put believe it was 10 sacks and
- 5:5116 TfL on the field in 13 games for Texas State.
- 5:55Yep, I worry a little bit about the injuries.
- 5:58He had a nagging injury in the spring.
- 5:59He was in a maybe a shoulder sling or something in the fall.
- 6:03But if he's on the field, that guy will produce.
- 6:06JC Price has a tendency to get the most out of these transfers,
- 6:10even in year 1. Peebles and APR both got drafted
- 6:15because of their play at Virginia Tech.
- 6:18And so Ben Bell I think could be the next guy there.
- 6:21There's some other like interesting names.
- 6:23And I, I love what I think it was what Grayson just said, Like
- 6:28Heisman's going to play a lot of snaps.
- 6:30Like he as probably as a backup because it's it's Gilliam and
- 6:32Copeland in the first string. But what JC Price when he got
- 6:36giddy in that one moment in the post practice thing where he was
- 6:40talking about Copeland and how he could be a dominant player.
- 6:43He's high up on my list as well. Yeah.
- 6:46I mean, it was interesting. So we had we, we had John come
- 6:49on couple weeks back and I mean, talking to him, that's a
- 6:55football player that, that, that's the type of like swag and
- 7:00confidence and ability that I think we, we, we really want
- 7:05from that position. So I'm really excited to see
- 7:07what he kind of brings to the table.
- 7:08Curtis, I'll let you kick off this next one here.
- 7:11Can I add to that real quick? My fault.
- 7:13Yeah, yeah, you're not allowed. You had your damn chance.
- 7:17Hey, bro, look, man, you know, Yeah.
- 7:21Well, I want to say the kid grew up in Northern Virginia, been a
- 7:27Tech fan, didn't get an offer, ended up going the JUCO route,
- 7:32Did the JUCO grind. Ended up at Arizona State.
- 7:36Liked it, but realized like, hey, I need to go somewhere when
- 7:40I enter the portal that I can play.
- 7:42Went to Eastern Michigan, he balled out there and then he
- 7:45finally gets a chance to come home and all his family gets to
- 7:48come watch him now that like APR had a similar path.
- 7:52I mean, he went to Florida and came back.
- 7:53But like, I like these Virginia kids that come back that really
- 7:57want to put on for the home state and it's their last chance
- 7:59to make it to the league. I think that that dude is going
- 8:02to go crazy this year. I like what you just said there,
- 8:05Virginia kids coming back home and and we we've been talking
- 8:09about the edge guys and guys we feel like are going to make like
- 8:12ruffle noise. But for the first time in a long
- 8:15time, look at Emmanuel Hitman, 6 foot three, about 310 lbs
- 8:19Metolica kid. South side here, Grayson.
- 8:23You know what I'm talking about, Brian, to think about that like
- 8:29being like like that rebuild and knowing what we've seen from
- 8:33saying. We're losing you just a a little
- 8:35bit there. We don't have you there, bud.
- 8:36Can you hear me now? Yeah.
- 8:38Yeah, yeah. Lean in.
- 8:40Microphone trying to adjust to it.
- 8:41The old one was crazy, but with that sort of meat on the inside
- 8:46and it's like why are we talking about them wrecking shop?
- 8:48Well, if they're keeping the bars on the back end clean and
- 8:52they're able to take double s where it's junk them and Bell
- 8:55coming off where it's like we still, we have to worry about
- 8:59these guys. That is exactly why I'm excited
- 9:02about him maybe more than anybody.
- 9:04Just sheer size. All right, let's go to the
- 9:07running backroom. We got a bunch.
- 9:10It's not a depth issue. Let's hope that God that it is
- 9:14not a usage issue like last year because there were usage issues.
- 9:18We can get to the Syracuse game that piss everybody off, but
- 9:21let's not do that. Who's going to have the most
- 9:24yard from scrimmage, PB? You know, if it had been
- 9:28yesterday, I would have said Terry on Stewart, but now I'm
- 9:32here and he's in a boot. Sometimes this boot stuff is
- 9:34just literally to protect it while they're healing and he'll
- 9:38be out of it in a day and then it's fine.
- 9:40But bully, as they call him, Terry on Stewart broke almost as
- 9:45many tackles as Ashton Gente. And two years ago, his broken
- 9:48tackles per carry rate was through the goddamn roof.
- 9:51Like this guy is hard to bring down.
- 9:53He had a sensational year for Bowling Green.
- 9:55And if fully healthy. And I I think that's what's
- 9:59bothering Pry a little bit is that he has had these Nicks and
- 10:02like, you know how some coaches are like they're harder on the
- 10:05guy if he comes in and maybe gets a twisted ankle and then
- 10:08like, he's not what what he thought he was.
- 10:11He wants he's he's grinding on him a little bit.
- 10:13Like even in the commentary and one of the post practice things
- 10:16he said like, yeah, he he needs to prove a little something and
- 10:19iffully healthy. He would be our lead back.
- 10:21But I'll I'll go with him. I won't steal another guy.
- 10:25I will still say Terrian Stewart will lead us in yardage this
- 10:28year. I'm going Marcellus Hawkins, and
- 10:33I know he's D2. What he played at school and
- 10:36their mascot. What were they?
- 10:37The mules. And what do mules do?
- 10:39They fucking work, baby. And that's what he's gonna do.
- 10:43He's gonna pull the plow. He's gonna he's gonna will us to
- 10:46victory and this dude like the the the look, I don't I tried
- 10:52not to really get too much into the offseason hype and all the
- 10:55videos, but that hurdle it moved me.
- 10:58I it I was bricked brother like straight up like ready.
- 11:03Yeah, like let's go. Marcellus Hawkins.
- 11:07I like his energy got a lot to prove potential further 2 year
- 11:14waiver don't know yet. This year counts the most if
- 11:18Terry and Stewart's in a boot need to get him out of it boot
- 11:21scooping boogie. You could say we got we got a
- 11:25big game next week against the Cox.
- 11:27You know it's just time like let's get it doggy.
- 11:30It's time like Marcellus Hawkins next man up RV one.
- 11:35Let's roll, baby. Dan, if you that bricked up, you
- 11:38need to get to that Atlanta strip club fast, man.
- 11:40Magic City, they got great wings.
- 11:43You. Gotta get your you gotta get
- 11:45your mind right. If you bricked up in Atlanta,
- 11:47I'll tell you that right now. I talked to Dwight Howard.
- 11:57Dan's got the George Costanza. Think it moved.
- 11:59Hey, we're not doing this shit this year where we're asking
- 12:03about the prettiest girls on some college campus talking
- 12:06about being bricked up in Atlanta.
- 12:07I remember that last year, Tally.
- 12:10I remember that you asked Dan and I some freaky shit.
- 12:12Dan froze. Man, Dan, it was like, what,
- 12:15Arizona State? Maybe I don't.
- 12:17Know. Jeremiah Kony, gentlemen, new #4
- 12:23on offense, excited to see him play.
- 12:26And then also, I mean, it kind of makes me wonder.
- 12:29I mean, there's there's Tyler Mason as well.
- 12:31We see any, any glimmers of Jeff Everton?
- 12:34Don't know, but you know, yeah, we'll, we'll see.
- 12:40He's. He's cleared.
- 12:41I I think it's more of a working him all all the way back from
- 12:45that injury from the offseason and whether he's going to get
- 12:47any burn as a result of the depth that's out there.
- 12:51But I mean, I think, you know, obviously talent wise, he's
- 12:54going to be that guy. Just will this be, will it be
- 12:57his turn this year? I guess kind of kind of wait and
- 12:59see for sure. Braylon Bennett, Brayden
- 13:02Bennett, I should say, deserves a mention a maybe a guy out of
- 13:05the backfield. He's from coastal, kind of a
- 13:09hybrid role. He could do a little bit of both
- 13:11and they like him a lot. And in terms of like PFF
- 13:13ratings, he was a highly rated guy as well and per touch.
- 13:18And so is the is the three headed monster Bennett, Stewart
- 13:23and Hawkins? Or is it Stewart, Hawkins and
- 13:27Coney? I I don't know but probably
- 13:28wants to have three. Yeah, PJ also should get some
- 13:34looks in there, I would think, judging by what he did before he
- 13:36got hurt. But who knows He.
- 13:39Had that great run against Miami in in that game.
- 13:43Yeah. Phantom Hold.
- 13:45Phantom Hold. Unreal.
- 13:47Yeah. Yeah, unbelievable.
- 13:50Very. Very luck last year behind in
- 13:53the running back field, like if Prelo hadn't gotten hurt at the
- 13:57time that he got hurt, we needed a back because Toton was banged
- 14:01up like he really could have had like it it could have emerged
- 14:04had he not gotten hurt. I I was disappointed to.
- 14:07You mean ran the ball more than like 6 times versus Clemson?
- 14:10Dude, I I still can't believe we didn't give the ball.
- 14:12Coney averaged like what, like 7 yards a carry against Syracuse
- 14:15and they they didn't give him 10?
- 14:17Sorry. 9.6 A carry against Syracuse.
- 14:20And he didn't get a single carry against Clemson, a team that
- 14:23can't defend the run. I I still am not over it.
- 14:25I'm not over. It we're not allegedly,
- 14:28allegedly, Coney pulled his hamming that week during
- 14:31practice. So no, because they put him on.
- 14:33The name. Dan, you go back to that game,
- 14:36they put him on the field a few times.
- 14:39If if he had that port of hand me they wouldn't have did that.
- 14:42He. Said he broke his hand or
- 14:44something, something. You never know, man.
- 14:47They had so many injuries and stuff and they happened.
- 14:50I know that they're there, but. We shouldn't have lost the
- 14:52Syracuse. We shouldn't have lost the
- 14:56friggin Syracuse. Shouldn't have lost the
- 14:58Vanderbilt either, but we didn't keep going.
- 15:01Yeah, we keep going. We keep going.
- 15:03Shelton, you're up next. Man cost these boys a bone.
- 15:06See if you can get them to fight.
- 15:08Yeah, let's talk, Let's talk defensive back.
- 15:10So we got a couple rooms here. First off, cornerbacks, incoming
- 15:14transfers, Isaiah Brown, Murray, commonly referred to as IBM,
- 15:17which I think is a pretty cool nickname.
- 15:19Cale Brown comes in from Hawaii. And then you got Joseph Reg in
- 15:22from Wingate. Obviously the returners, Dante
- 15:25Lovett and Thomas Williams. So you can throw in Josh Clark
- 15:27there at the Richard Freshman. Now the safety room is
- 15:30interesting because you've got Quinton Reddish coming back.
- 15:32Obviously he had that kick return touchdown against against
- 15:36Clemson, which is his big highlight.
- 15:38But he had a few valuable snaps last season.
- 15:40And then you got the four headed transferred quartet,
- 15:43Christianella, Sherrod Coble, Tyson Flowers and Isaiah Cash.
- 15:46So between the quarterbacks and safeties, you know, which room
- 15:50gives you guys more pause? Which are you more confident in
- 15:53which? Which are you more kind of
- 15:55looking forward to seeing play? We can start with Pete and kind
- 15:56of work work a way out. I think it's got to be corner
- 16:00for more concern just because the depth at safety is is
- 16:03better. If we had had Josh Clark, we
- 16:06know he's he's injured right now and is probably going to miss
- 16:08the entire year, I would feel differently as a whole.
- 16:11I love the DB room, but I think the concern on the outside is
- 16:15behind Dante Lovett. Like who is that, that number 2
- 16:18corner because IBM is a nickel slash safety and we might do a
- 16:23lot of three high safety looks where IBM could be on the field.
- 16:26So I know he's been playing a little outside, but his
- 16:30requirements will probably be at nickel or as a third safety.
- 16:33So I am concerned about an outside corner.
- 16:38Yeah, I would say I was before Josh Clark got hurt, I was
- 16:42really excited about the corners.
- 16:45I was really excited for what Josh Clark had the potential to
- 16:48bring to the field. But that's not going to happen
- 16:50this year, unfortunately. So I'm thinking, I definitely
- 16:54have a little more concerned about the cornerback room by
- 16:56default. But I do, I mean, they've had,
- 17:01they've said good things about the progression of JoJo KREM as
- 17:04a true freshman knowledge Herald, Jamar Deloach.
- 17:08But Thomas Williams, he's, he's been here.
- 17:11He was here last year. He has a little experience.
- 17:13So I figure I don't know anything about Caleb Brown.
- 17:15I know it came from Hawaii, but that's all I know.
- 17:19And IBM had a lot of good things said about him from East
- 17:23Carolina, right? Yeah, why is my way of Alabama
- 17:26get that shit right then? Oh my.
- 17:29My my fault, bro, my fault he's. A West Coast kid.
- 17:33He he Is he a Deep South kid? Yeah.
- 17:35He we he don't give a piss about nothing but the Hokies now.
- 17:38But what I'm saying is CB2 would obviously be more of a concern
- 17:43just because we don't know. I mean, we don't know about the
- 17:45safety room either, but I know like they got like 8 of them to
- 17:49come in. So I would think at least two or
- 17:51three of them will be serviceable.
- 17:53I got, I like Isaiah Cash's film a lot.
- 17:55He brings the boom. Sherrod Covell you hope works
- 17:58out. It's another Virginia kid coming
- 18:00back. So like we want that success
- 18:03story and we wanted him bad to begin with before he went to
- 18:06Clemson. So yeah, I would Cornerback
- 18:09room, Long story short or short story long, whichever.
- 18:15Pete and Dan, I mean really covered most of the ground
- 18:17there. I mean for me guys, just so many
- 18:19new names this year. I mean, like as, as we just kind
- 18:22of watched the, the, the first couple of weeks, I'm literally
- 18:26going to be sitting there with the, with the roster up on my
- 18:29laptop. Like who the hell are these guys
- 18:31there's? So many names in that secondary
- 18:33that. Are new, but I'm like there's so
- 18:35many new names in the secondary. I will say, I mean, there's
- 18:39plenty of depth in the safety room.
- 18:40We've acknowledged that now ad nauseam, but all I'll say is I,
- 18:45I am such a die hard fan of Dante Lovett.
- 18:48I cannot wait to watch that kid play.
- 18:51He's such a dog. He wears where's the where's the
- 18:55stick proudly. I mean, we've had a lot of dogs
- 18:57wear the number one in the past and and he's absolutely filling
- 19:02those shoes. So and I'm so glad he stayed.
- 19:05I was so worried that at the end of last year, just kind of based
- 19:08on what happened, he was going to hop in the portal and get the
- 19:11hell out of town. So the fact that he's back back
- 19:13in Blacksburg, thrilled about that.
- 19:16To Dan's point, I am excited to see Koval play.
- 19:19He was definitely the one that got away when he committed to
- 19:22New Spring University, and now he's back in Blacksburg, so
- 19:26thrilled about that. I will say what Dan pointed out
- 19:29about the freshman corners is very important because we've
- 19:33seen freshman corners come in and play immediately at tech
- 19:36Brandon face on and Kyle Fuller in the same year, right, which
- 19:39face on was unexpected. Fuller was very expected as a
- 19:42five star, but JoJo Crimp could find his way on the field sooner
- 19:46than later. They they've been talking about
- 19:48him ever since he got here and knowledge as well.
- 19:51So Deloach was the the high recruit that we got back in the
- 19:55boat on signing day. But those other two guys seem to
- 19:59be getting the most like praise throughout the spring and into
- 20:02the fall. So I think those those freshman
- 20:04will factor in. But Thomas Williams, not only as
- 20:06a corner but as a return man, we saw him do some things last
- 20:09year. Yeah, but and everybody's
- 20:12worried about corner, but the I think what we're going to see or
- 20:15what we're probably all looking for is what are we running?
- 20:18Because if we're running 3 high safety all the time, even a
- 20:22nickel, because you can do it if you got a guy that can cover,
- 20:26it's it's less stress on your depth, right?
- 20:29That if we're only constant 3 high safeties, it's like, OK, we
- 20:31need only three quarterbacks. I wish we could ask David this,
- 20:36but I think IB Ms. been working some outside.
- 20:39Feel like that's been the reports he's been working on the
- 20:41outside, which would alleviate some depth.
- 20:44And just the way he looks, he looks like an absolute dog.
- 20:47Like he looks like he wants to go in there and fight people at
- 20:50all times. So, and I know that can be good
- 20:53or bad for a corner, but at least you know he wants to come.
- 20:56He's got the confidence of a corner, he definitely does.
- 20:59Yeah, I believe Sifka said that he is the nickel.
- 21:03So when there are nickel packages, he will be on the
- 21:06inside, but there's definitely room for him to play on the
- 21:09outside. Yeah, he could be more of a kind
- 21:11of a rotational player when they're not running nickel
- 21:13packages, but he'll be the primary when you look at those
- 21:19nickel packages. So it's it's it's going to be
- 21:21interesting to see. I'm just trying to restrained
- 21:25from making a very niche IBM joke here, so I'll let it move
- 21:29on here. But I mean, Brian has shown the
- 21:32ability to be. He'll play a freshman.
- 21:34I mean, Brianne Murray was awful when he played Monsour d'ulane
- 21:38who died and went to heaven. I don't know, He said LSU, but
- 21:43like, he will, they will do it if it goes bad enough on that
- 21:47side. So, yeah, well.
- 21:48Again, it's one of the talent. You've talked about this in the
- 21:51past about the corner position and and you were in, you played
- 21:55collard ball. It's one of those that that can
- 21:57flip easy. Yeah, definitely.
- 22:00Corner is one of those, you know, I ain't going to say easy
- 22:03to get on the field, but it's one of the easier because it's
- 22:06it's all about skill set. You know, it's all about what
- 22:09you have. As long as you got the size to
- 22:11kind of be able to bang against a wide receiver, you know, which
- 22:16is not going to be a lineman, you know, it's all about are
- 22:22your hips open enough to dance with this guy in front of you?
- 22:26And a lot of these kids nowadays are they can come straight out
- 22:29of high school and and be ready to play.
- 22:31So not saying that that's going to happen, but if it does
- 22:35happen, corners, one of those positions that you see it happen
- 22:38more often than any other position.
- 22:41So switching gears a little bit now from talking about defense,
- 22:45we're going to talk about offense a little bit.
- 22:48The lead on the offense, which is Kyron drones at quarterback.
- 22:53We've seen glimpses of, you know, greatness from Kyron, but
- 22:56we also seen some, you know, some some bad spots from him,
- 22:59some injuries, things like that. What do you guys think Kyron
- 23:04needs to do this year to I would say, I guess while some NFL
- 23:11scouts just to play his way onto NFL roster, what does he need to
- 23:15show? What does he need to do?
- 23:17He needs to find his swagger again from like the end of from
- 23:21the military bowl two years ago. You know, I, I, I feel like
- 23:26Kyron really started to find his stride.
- 23:28He really found his confidence two years ago.
- 23:31Maybe he was dropping Dimes in the bucket.
- 23:33Looked like a very comfortable playmaker last year.
- 23:37I mean, I know he was dinged up, but it he, he regressed a little
- 23:40bit last year to no real fault of his own.
- 23:44I mean, he had Parker Clemens blocking for him and sacking him
- 23:49periodically. And you know what, Parker, I,
- 23:51I'm sure you're a nice kid. We wish you well.
- 23:54Just, you know, on LinkedIn. But it's fine.
- 23:58So I'm just, I'm just, I'm saying what everyone thinks, all
- 24:01right? Exactly.
- 24:01Exactly. I'm saying what everyone thinks,
- 24:05but yeah, really just find find his group, find a swagger again.
- 24:09If he can come out and put together a complete game against
- 24:12South Carolina and and really find his his rhythm again, maybe
- 24:17the season will go a little bit different than I think a lot of
- 24:19us think it will. But yeah, that I think that's
- 24:22the really the the answer right there is Fonda Swagger.
- 24:26He's got it. We know he's got it.
- 24:29Thanks. I think the important part for
- 24:31him is if he can, because he went on Adam Brenneman and he
- 24:36said that obviously what we all knew, he was very shy in the
- 24:41pocket last year because he was very nervous about his
- 24:43protection. He didn't have any faith in it.
- 24:46So if this offensive line, this new iteration can give this man
- 24:52some confidence building blocks to begin that South Carolina
- 24:55game and he can get into a flow, I think he's that swagger will
- 25:00come back. I think we're going to need to
- 25:02see more accurate balls on a consistent basis.
- 25:06And I think Monty knowing what his identity is for this offense
- 25:11will help him a lot better as well because he won't be
- 25:14wondering every week. Like is the game plan going to
- 25:17be run the ball 8,000,000 times or is the game playing going to
- 25:20be to throw the ball 8,000,000 times?
- 25:22Is the game playing going to be to flip it to this dude and
- 25:24throw it to me in the end? Like we just don't know.
- 25:26Like it was reinventing the wheel every week.
- 25:28Like we just didn't know what the offense was going to look
- 25:30like. So I think a more consistent
- 25:32vision, better blocking and him being able to re establish his
- 25:37confidence and become a little more accurate with the ball and
- 25:42put up more numbers will obviously go like it'll help him
- 25:46tremendously as far as the NFL goes.
- 25:49Yeah, and the Vanderbilt game, right off the bat, you could
- 25:52just see there was a discomfort there.
- 25:53And I know he got stepped on or whatever, but like the actual
- 25:58plays, the actual presence in the pocket, it looked like he
- 26:01was overthinking things. His head didn't seem clear.
- 26:04And Dan said reinventing the wheel.
- 26:07That's a direct quote from Coach Pry.
- 26:09Like we won't have to be reinventing the wheel on offense
- 26:12every week, which has to be a direct shot at Tyler Bowen.
- 26:15And Monty has come in and Kyron loved the offense right off the
- 26:19bat. He should be comfortable.
- 26:21He should be confident. And thank God he's healthy
- 26:24because when he was in a boot at the end of June and into July,
- 26:28it's like, what, what's even going to happen here?
- 26:31Well, he got out of that boot and he's hit the ground running.
- 26:35And from everything we've heard, he looks good, looks like the
- 26:38old Chiron again. So if the protection is better
- 26:41and his head is clear and maybe his clear eyes, full heart, you
- 26:46know what I mean? That's right, that's right.
- 26:48No, but I it's the offensive piece of it with Monty and him
- 26:52being on the same page in addition to the online is huge.
- 26:56Like it's absolutely huge. And when you bring in two new
- 26:59coordinators, you don't know how it's going to go.
- 27:02But just hearing how much he likes the offense and Monty's
- 27:06history with more mobile quarterbacks, it has me excited.
- 27:11Yeah, I think. Can I do some real quick?
- 27:13Go ahead, Curtis. Shelton's always on this.
- 27:16With Kyron Shelton, you always talk about his deep ball.
- 27:21That's the issue, because he's got intermediate routes, short
- 27:23routes, he gets them there. He's got the gun.
- 27:27If he improves that, I think that gets him.
- 27:29But Sheldon, do you believe someone like Philip Montgomery
- 27:32can fix that? Because you've been, because
- 27:34that's been your thing. You've been like, yes, he's a
- 27:37beast running. Yes, he's good at short routes.
- 27:39But God, Sheldon doesn't say that because Sheldon's a nice
- 27:42kid, but GD it. He can't hit a deep ball.
- 27:46Yeah, I don't know. I mean, it's hard to say because
- 27:48I feel like it takes a really good, really good quarterbacks
- 27:52coach to kind of, you know, coach you in a bad in, in the
- 27:55good habits just because it's such a, it's such a mental
- 27:57position and there's so many, you know, different factors
- 28:00involved. Like, you know, if you're seeing
- 28:01ghosts, the protection's bad, like Grayson mentioned, you can
- 28:04really start to kind of get in your own head.
- 28:06So I feel like hopefully with more confidence he'll be better
- 28:09there. But I feel like for me, like we
- 28:12saw, you know, last year, Hokie's bread and butter, the
- 28:15short passing game kind of got taken away.
- 28:17And so Bowen didn't really have like a, he didn't really have
- 28:20like an off speed pitch. Like, you know, we take away the
- 28:21fastball, no off speed pitch. So Montgomery likes to throw the
- 28:26ball pretty deep down field. I'm just curious to see like how
- 28:29that works with Kyron's game and if the protection holds up as
- 28:31well, Because I think I think there's, you know, it, it could
- 28:35be kind of a hit or miss type of thing.
- 28:37So we'll see. Yeah, We know we're still going
- 28:39to see those short routes. It's just they're not going to
- 28:41be as behind the line. Like you're not going to see
- 28:44negative plays come from those short routes like we saw in
- 28:47Tyler Bowen's offense, where so much of that short pass the game
- 28:50is predicated off screens and kind of those quick outs, things
- 28:53that are at or behind the line of scrimmage.
- 28:55You're at least going to see some positive yards off of this.
- 28:58But Kyra's going to have to be more consistent with completing
- 29:00those routes and he's going to have to be able to take
- 29:02advantage down the field to stretch those defenses out.
- 29:05And we're going to have to be consistent in the running game.
- 29:07But my thing with Kyron, and I know you, you guys have hit on
- 29:10it a little bit, is that he plays differently when he's
- 29:15confident. And we saw the swagger come out
- 29:19in that pit game a couple years ago.
- 29:21And it kind of, you know, other than Louisville, we didn't
- 29:24really see we, we was pretty consistent the rest of the year.
- 29:26He played with a good degree of confidence for the rest of the
- 29:29season. I think I only two games last
- 29:32year where he looked really confident, at least the
- 29:36confidence that we had saw in 2023.
- 29:39Stanford. Stanford.
- 29:40Miami. Miami.
- 29:42Miami, too, yeah. So we only saw a couple games
- 29:46where he looked really comfortable with what he was
- 29:49doing, with what he was seeing, with what the expectations were
- 29:53for him. Then the game plan.
- 29:55I think Montgomery's going to be that kind of that, that even
- 29:59keel, that stabilizing factor for him because he talked about
- 30:03on, you know, the, the, the interview with Adam, he, he had
- 30:08been, you know, seeing a sports therapist and you're trying to
- 30:11get the, the mentals of injuries and all the stuff of being, you
- 30:14know, this, this focal point of the offense.
- 30:17They're going to be able to come into his leadership.
- 30:19I think having that confidence, confidence in himself and
- 30:22confidence in the guys around him is going to pay big
- 30:25dividends this year. Also not.
- 30:28Go ahead, Dan I. Was just saying not to like shit
- 30:32on Quan Felton, but like I feel like he gave up on a lot of
- 30:35those deep balls last year. Like if you would have just like
- 30:38dove for a couple or like reached out, it might have
- 30:41improved Kyron's deep ball percentage.
- 30:43But I mean, I'm not a wide receiver coach, or I don't play
- 30:47wide receivers. I was going to say.
- 30:50Man in the stands. Yeah, Dwight makes a great point
- 30:53there with the too much hype impact of the offense, you know,
- 30:56expectations, not the same hunger.
- 30:59I also think that expectations things goes on Kyron too because
- 31:03not just because there's higher expectations, but as these
- 31:06quarterbacks who are known to be scramblers as we Kyron got rid
- 31:11of the best scrambler in Athlon 2 years ago.
- 31:13And when they see that and when you're trying to get to the NFL,
- 31:16there is this feeling that you need to show the world that you
- 31:20can pass. And I feel like we came into
- 31:23last season and Bowen came into last season with the four wide
- 31:26receivers that came back, we're going to pass the football.
- 31:28And it's happened year after year where year one they Joe
- 31:32Rudolph and those guys, they said we ran the wrong offense
- 31:34for six weeks, Year 2 where we ran the wrong offense for five
- 31:38weeks. And then last year we did the
- 31:40same damn thing until we were like, you know what, we should
- 31:42probably give Tooten the ball. And it's that's the kind of shit
- 31:46I just don't want to see again. And we should couldn't see again
- 31:49because Montgomery's been in this game a long time.
- 31:52And so you couple that and Kyron working out with Cam and
- 31:57Shadour, who are much better passers than him, and that
- 32:00pressure was on him, too. And so it was a bad recipe.
- 32:04Now the hunger's there. Maybe NFL is like, yeah, I need
- 32:09to do what I do best if I want to get a chance to go back
- 32:12there. And all all the things are now
- 32:14in place to be like he plays more free and more confident.
- 32:18Yeah, Tally, you got to say something.
- 32:22Yeah, Yeah, it's. Usually, no.
- 32:23I was just, I was just listening to Pete.
- 32:25And he's right. It's like you just got to do
- 32:29what you're good at. You know what I'm saying?
- 32:30You can't. Watching, going back and
- 32:34watching that that Vanderbilt game, it's like watching Karen
- 32:37play. It was drilled in his head that
- 32:40he had to do certain things instead of just going and being
- 32:44who he is. He may not ever be Brett Favre.
- 32:50You know, I don't know Tom Brady as far as throwing the ball,
- 32:54pick somebody. But he can be Karen, you know
- 32:56what I'm saying? What makes him good, he can go
- 32:58do that. And I feel like all offseason,
- 33:02whether it be the expectations on himself or expectations on
- 33:06the other quarterbacks he was working out with, was he needed
- 33:09to do these things or he needed to have this many yards passing
- 33:14to be considered a good quarterback.
- 33:17I, I don't, I don't fully believe that, you know what I'm
- 33:19saying? Because I've seen some dog shit
- 33:22quarterbacks make it to the NFL. I'm just telling you, like some
- 33:27of them are still getting paid now and they never done nothing.
- 33:32So I'm not saying that he will or won't make it.
- 33:36I'm just saying to have the best shot, you just got to go out and
- 33:39be you as any player, you know, and the chips will fall what
- 33:43they make. So I'm just hoping that he just
- 33:46goes. And, you know, I ain't saying we
- 33:47need to run him or we need to do.
- 33:49I'm just saying Kyron's been playing football a long time and
- 33:53I feel like if he takes the layups, he'll be fine.
- 33:58If it's the running lane there or go ahead.
- 34:00I'm sorry. I was just going to say, I mean,
- 34:02to that point you just made about Kyron, like it almost felt
- 34:07like he had to do certain things in the Vanderbilt game.
- 34:10We were, most of us were there, right?
- 34:12We saw that team that day. When your QB feels that way, the
- 34:18rest of the team feels that way. It was very palpable.
- 34:22It's almost like the, I mean, you can see how almost nervous
- 34:26they were when we were, I firmly believe the better team talent
- 34:31wise, but it's it's like we just couldn't get out of our own way.
- 34:35But it starts with Kyron drones. It's like he just seemed
- 34:38uncomfortable. And as a byproduct of that, the
- 34:41guys around him, you could see it.
- 34:43It was it was very apparent. And so in versus South Carolina,
- 34:49you can't go out there into that big ass stadium in front of all
- 34:54those people and feel like you got to do something.
- 34:58You got to go be Kyron drones. That's it.
- 35:02And we got to go beat Virginia Tech.
- 35:03You know what I'm saying? We can't go beat Alabama.
- 35:04We can't go be anybody that we are not is what I felt like we
- 35:08thought we were last year. Coming in with those
- 35:11expectations and people getting paid plays a big part in the
- 35:17game. It's like, let's keep it real.
- 35:20Like, I love the Lord and I actually like going to church,
- 35:24but if I won like $5,000,000, I don't know that I would go to
- 35:30church Sunday. I would go back eventually, but
- 35:34I don't know if I would go Sunday.
- 35:37I probably would find some other stuff to do before I go to
- 35:40church, you know what I'm saying?
- 35:42So bring that into like football.
- 35:46A lot of these, a lot of these players, you know, get nil.
- 35:50And I ain't saying that they didn't have no money, but they
- 35:53get a, you know, they get a good sum of money and they find other
- 35:58stuff to do besides working or, or what their routine is.
- 36:02And I feel like that's kind of what happened, or that's what's
- 36:04happening all over college football.
- 36:06You know, you. You, you, you frame a metaphor
- 36:09like nobody else. I'm just saying, man, I try to.
- 36:13I'm trying to bring this thing for because I know not everybody
- 36:18has played sports and I'm not saying I played so much, but I'm
- 36:22just saying some people who watch sports really hadn't
- 36:25played. Some of y'all out there want to
- 36:27tell people what to do and you really ain't played and that's
- 36:30OK. So I try to put it in a place
- 36:32where everybody can relate to it.
- 36:34You know what I'm saying? It's like you probably go to
- 36:36church and and worship something so you kind of understand what
- 36:40I'm saying. But when you get paid, when you
- 36:42start getting paid though it, it's different, man.
- 36:44And when you watch some of these players and you're like, that
- 36:47ain't what happened to him or that ain't what happened to him.
- 36:49This person is trying to get paid.
- 36:51This person just got paid and it looks different.
- 36:54So I feel like we've seen some of that last year and I'm hoping
- 36:59that this year all of that stuff is out the window.
- 37:03And I ain't saying like, I want to be the underdog.
- 37:05I I, I just want to be who we are.
- 37:07Like if we're ranked fifty, let's go play.
- 37:11If we're ranked fifteen, let's go play.
- 37:13I feel like last year coming into that Vanderbilt game, we
- 37:17thought we were going to walk in there and it was going to be a
- 37:20cakewalk. And when we realize it wasn't,
- 37:23it was like, oh, oh, oh shit, what do we do?
- 37:26You know, that was the feeling through the whole game.
- 37:28So this is going to be a little bit, this is going to be a
- 37:31little bit different. I'm not saying we're going to go
- 37:34in and win because I don't, I don't know.
- 37:36I, I definitely don't even want to get to that right now.
- 37:39But I feel like South Carolina has the pressure on them more
- 37:43than us. 100 percent, 100%, Sean, I'm going to disagree.
- 37:47I'm going to. Disagree with Sean's got up here
- 37:49because now it is. What you do in high school is
- 37:53what's getting you paid in NIL. It's it used to be high school,
- 37:57college, then NFL. But I'm going to make one quick
- 38:01statement before we pivot to the next question here.
- 38:03And that's this. We know Philip Montgomery
- 38:08basically had been recruiting Cowan drones since he was in
- 38:13high school, right? He he was, I think what first
- 38:16second offer was from Tulsa when he was like a junior high school
- 38:19very early. So he knows who he is as a
- 38:23person. He's met him, obviously, and I
- 38:26think that might go a long way because for what he was doing at
- 38:30Tulsa those years, we all saw it.
- 38:32We saw it in 15 when he was running it and then subsequent
- 38:35years later. Could he be the guy that unlocks
- 38:40every piece of potential? Because we're going to run you
- 38:42some. We're going to improve short
- 38:44passes, We're going to improve the deep ball.
- 38:46Because I saw you at 16, there was a reason.
- 38:48I wanted you to come to my team to play.
- 38:51There was a reason and now you know, many years later, six
- 38:55years later, the opportunities arisen.
- 38:58So we'll see, but let let me take the next one here.
- 39:01Let's go to defense, defense, defense, defense because
- 39:04everybody knows that's how you win championships.
- 39:08Sam Sekis improves this defensive metric in 2025.
- 39:13This y'all think about it and give y'all a second metrics.
- 39:16All that stuff up. If you need to pull things up,
- 39:18think about it. If he improves this defensive
- 39:22metric in 2025, the Hokies can be a top 25 defense.
- 39:29Tackling. Bang, a metric.
- 39:32My bad. Yeah, I'll go.
- 39:33Ahead. That's the technique.
- 39:35Yeah, I'll go ahead. No brainer, no brainer.
- 39:39The situational football last two minutes of the game.
- 39:42If you look at the Hokies record before the final two minutes of
- 39:45the game, Brent Pry is a God and he's on his way to a statue and
- 39:50he's won ACC Championship already.
- 39:53Like it's ridiculous. Like just situational football.
- 39:58You clean it up. Especially the last two minutes
- 40:01of a game. In a close game, we are cooking
- 40:03with far more grease. Good answer, Dan.
- 40:07It's a very good answer. I would say limiting the
- 40:10explosive plays, whether that's explosive plays per game, per
- 40:14drive, whatever it is, but explosive plays on offense when
- 40:17you when you're the defender is one of the leading indicators of
- 40:21like winning games. If you have more explosive
- 40:23plays, there's a very good chance.
- 40:24I know Shelton's all over this, but that would be my thing is if
- 40:27we can, the situation of football is huge.
- 40:30But we saw some big plays in the vanity game.
- 40:32We saw big plays in the Syracuse game, Duke game.
- 40:35Good Lord. So those are the kind of things
- 40:37that Cifkis and his game plan defense, putting it all
- 40:42together, you have to limit explosives and I I, he's kind of
- 40:46talked about that a little bit. So that is a key for me.
- 40:50I I. Mean, I think measurable
- 40:52metrics. I mean you improved the tackles
- 40:54for loss tally. I'll add four loss after
- 40:57tackling. Now it works.
- 40:59That that works. Tackles for loss, guys, I mean
- 41:02to to tighten the screw on on pulse's point.
- 41:06When did Virginia Tech teams last year fall apart?
- 41:13The third quarter, you went into the locker room, you might have
- 41:18been up at half. You're having a great game.
- 41:20I think about the Boston College game Thursday night and, and
- 41:25we're we're kind of laying the wood.
- 41:27And then all of a sudden they start making a run back in the
- 41:32third quarter. And, and, and then that goes to
- 41:34Pete's point, explosive plays. You're letting these guys score
- 41:38and catch up. It's like, dude, you have got to
- 41:41play. You have got to play complete
- 41:45defense in the third quarter. I mean, you could say that about
- 41:48the offense, too, but really, I mean, that's where we fell
- 41:51apart. Do you know the number Grayson
- 41:53last year? Say you know the number.
- 41:55Do you know the number? Number what?
- 41:57No. No.
- 41:58Oh. In the third quarter, no, I
- 41:59actually don't know. We gave up 103rd quarter points
- 42:02last year. The average is like 6, so that
- 42:07would be about 75. We gave up 100.
- 42:10We gave up almost in 12 games we roughly gave up what, almost 8
- 42:151/2 points 1/4, which is 2 1/2 points higher than all.
- 42:18So that's the intent you'd. Want to be a good point, to be a
- 42:22good team? You'd like to be a be better
- 42:24than the average. You'd like to be behind the
- 42:26average, Yeah. Not 20.
- 42:28Percent worse than the average. Dan, I went down a rabbit hole
- 42:31and I'm glad you brought this up.
- 42:32And this is about the third time people to listen to us do it.
- 42:35If 43 points in the last four minutes of games, we gave up
- 42:39just 43 points, think about that.
- 42:43Think about that. If you just cut that in half,
- 42:45what's our record last year? I mean, if you.
- 42:49Is everybody pissed off right now?
- 42:50If you go with the O and five in one score games, I mean, what if
- 42:54we're three and two? You know, what if we're two and
- 42:57three? Like the whole season is
- 42:59different. You know you.
- 43:00Beat Vanderbilt, maybe. Pammy, you beat, I mean. 7
- 43:04points in the last minute for them, just so you know.
- 43:07It's it's Wildman and like, so to that point, I mean, Dan
- 43:09talked about situational. You know, you guys have talked
- 43:12about, you know, moments in the game.
- 43:16And I know Sheldon is a isn't a big fan of this, but like being
- 43:20able to get off the field on on 3rd down, like we, we were
- 43:23pretty poor, especially in those situational moments, especially
- 43:28in the third quarter. We could not get our defense off
- 43:30the field. Sheldon, did you find it yet?
- 43:34Yeah, talking about explosive plays allowed.
- 43:35I didn't realize how. Bad it was, but.
- 43:39We were, we were 100 and we were 123rd in plays of 10 plus yards
- 43:44allowed, 131, as well as plays of 20 plus yards allowed 127th.
- 43:50And you can go pretty much down the line 30 + 40 + 50 plus all
- 43:53all bottom 10. And it was pretty much every
- 43:56single one. I Yeah.
- 43:58Like when we we didn't bend, but we broke.
- 44:05I'm. Guessing, I'm guessing when
- 44:11Brent Prize first ever interviewed was that long last
- 44:13play from Maryland that was Bad Omen.
- 44:18And these coaches have to just go coach and players have to
- 44:21play. They have to like, if you can't
- 44:25make a play, put somebody else in.
- 44:28Again, I keep saying the same stuff because it seems simple to
- 44:31me. It's like somebody was like,
- 44:34well, they didn't have nobody else.
- 44:36I'm like, they did. It's like 70 people on the
- 44:39sideline. Just put somebody in.
- 44:42Just put them in. My counter to that tally is if
- 44:45you're running the same shitty defense, putting in a new guide
- 44:48isn't necessarily going to help Caleb Woodson in spite of our
- 44:53defense showed out last year. I just think like the coaching
- 44:58as, as Dwight is pointing out, strength and conditioning
- 45:00coaching has been so poor for three years that it's it has not
- 45:06been the Jimmy's and the Joe's. It has been the X's and O's for
- 45:10three years. Billy said this on a show the
- 45:12other night. Billy was on the strength and
- 45:13conditioning thing for a while too with Dwight and it's we are
- 45:17we have been unprepared for three years to go into these
- 45:22games. Remember when they decided they
- 45:23were going to wake up everybody early before BC and that was
- 45:26that was the secret sauce. They they are grasping at straws
- 45:30to try to figure out how to get the team ready to play a game
- 45:34from the gun. And hopefully by changing four
- 45:39different coaches, we figured it out this year.
- 45:41But it it the talent has not been the problem.
- 45:44That's why I like I was saying like my counter is that don't
- 45:46just put someone else in because it's still Marv's defense.
- 45:48It's still not going to be run correctly.
- 45:50But this is the thing, this is this is where where I go Pete on
- 45:54that a couple of ways. So when you go on offense and
- 45:58you watch a offensive lineman miss 3.
- 46:03Blocks I'm. Just saying, you watch a
- 46:06offensive lineman miss three blocks out of three plays, just
- 46:10put somebody else in and see if they're going to miss 3 or if
- 46:12they're going to miss two out of the three, that thing.
- 46:15And then if you, I don't care if you got Ed Reed on your defense
- 46:20and he misses a tackle that you need at a pivotal part of the
- 46:25game. I ain't saying take him out for
- 46:27the whole game, but you got to try somebody else just to get to
- 46:31let them know that you have somebody else that's on your
- 46:35behind. You know what I'm saying?
- 46:37Like, I feel like the coaching staff, and that goes back to
- 46:40coaching. I feel like the coaches were so
- 46:42indebted to each other or indebted to certain players that
- 46:46they were scared to put somebody else in.
- 46:48Well, the. Coaching on the O line just
- 46:50continued to make no sense throughout the.
- 46:52Year, right? And it goes back to Vitali.
- 46:55Your point is perfect. We are in the age of NIM.
- 46:59People are getting paid. I love what you say.
- 47:02You suck right now. Sit your ass down.
- 47:04Well you're paying me $300,000 a year and your ass ain't worth
- 47:07it. You ain't doing $300,000 worth a
- 47:10year playing. Go sit down.
- 47:12I'm going to take Mr. 50K over here and if he goes out there
- 47:15and busts ass, I'm going to give him your money next year.
- 47:18And I'll say this. And now you can do that.
- 47:21The whole thing is you can do that now.
- 47:22Like literally, if someone comes up to a coach and says, you
- 47:26know, why did you bench him? You know, you gave him all that
- 47:28money. He sucks.
- 47:29Is he worth that money? Well, I guess not.
- 47:32Do you want his money? I'd love to have his money then
- 47:34go beat his ass out on the field and then you get his money.
- 47:37Sorry. I.
- 47:39Don't know that. Go ahead.
- 47:41Go ahead, Dan, you've. Been I'm saying it has to be
- 47:44ability over ego, because if you embarrass the name on the back
- 47:48of the jersey, they just got to live with that.
- 47:49But if you embarrass the name on the front of the jersey, your
- 47:51ass is getting fired. So I mean which one you want to
- 47:54do, you know? Yeah, and everybody's got to
- 47:56live with that. If you embarrass the name on the
- 47:58front, everybody on that team has to deal with the Ram
- 48:01implications of that. This is at the end of the day,
- 48:03you got to, you got to perform. It's all of that is so true and
- 48:08guys like this is pre NIL era. I'm going to throw it back a
- 48:11little bit. I don't know if y'all remember.
- 48:14I mean this is like early transfer portal days.
- 48:16Y'all remember Jake Johnson the linebacker?
- 48:19Can you say? Number 36, So I mean, there
- 48:22were, there was a little while like he came in, he was a three
- 48:24star recruit, he was playing a lot.
- 48:27And then all of a sudden he kind of started to let it slip a
- 48:31little bit. And Bud Foster replaced him with
- 48:35Lyndell Gibson, who also, you know, started to let it slip.
- 48:39But at first Johnson wasn't really cutting it the way he
- 48:43used to. And Foster said, listen, Jake,
- 48:46I'm putting Gibson in because he's getting it done at a higher
- 48:50level than than you are. And then we saw Jake Johnson
- 48:53transfer as a byproduct to that. But I mean like that's even just
- 48:57a pre NIL example in Virginia Tech where I just I think about
- 49:01where a coach said, hey, listen dude, like somebody's if you're
- 49:05not getting it done, I'm putting in the next guy.
- 49:08It it's overall in sports, we all know that that's good
- 49:10practice, play the best guy. That's not what that's not.
- 49:13That was not what I was trying to say to tell.
- 49:15The overarching point was I was saying the schemes were so bad
- 49:18that it it wouldn't have necessarily mattered.
- 49:21Now on the offensive line, it might have mattered.
- 49:23And we've seen that with Montavius Cunningham, who
- 49:25couldn't get on the field under the last offensive line coach,
- 49:28they're now saying could be our best offensive lineman this
- 49:31year. So like it's there was a lot of
- 49:34issues in the coaching department.
- 49:35Last year, well, it's it's wild that he could get on the field
- 49:38last year and then turned around and this year he was probably
- 49:41the primary reason that a Bob Schick transfers to Oklahoma
- 49:45State. So, so it's it's it's a very
- 49:48interesting. Thank God for that.
- 49:50And yeah, thank God for Matt Moore.
- 49:51Absolutely. Thank God for coaching change.
- 49:54I mean, all of the coach we had what?
- 49:57Who was it that talked about it? It was.
- 49:59Me and you, Tally, we talked about it at some point.
- 50:01Yeah, but I'm just saying, like tonight somebody was talking
- 50:04about just the turnover and coaching or how bad of an idea
- 50:08it was to hire a brand new coach and a brand new coordinator.
- 50:11Right, Mike McDaniel, that sounds like something.
- 50:16We had all of these. We had all of these, you know,
- 50:19tweets and pictures about going on camping trips together
- 50:23together and going catfish noodling or something.
- 50:27I don't care about none of that. Like, I don't care if y'all are
- 50:30friends. I hope y'all hate each other,
- 50:32but y'all just want to win. You know what I'm saying?
- 50:34Like, I want to see coaches that are going to challenge each
- 50:38other to be better. And if it's not working, you
- 50:41find a way to make it work. That's what that's what I care
- 50:43about. I don't care if you're taking
- 50:45them on vacation and stuff at this point.
- 50:47Like, yeah, it might have been cool whenever he is, but now you
- 50:51got to throw that out. I just want to see competent
- 50:54coaching and I don't like, Pete said.
- 50:57I don't feel like we've had that for three years, you know, so.
- 51:01Yeah, and and tally, to your point, I think it can go in the
- 51:03other direction because we saw how much the wheels completely
- 51:07fell off at Florida State last year.
- 51:09So like the, the, the culture and the dynamic of the team
- 51:14chemistry still matters, but because of NIL, it probably
- 51:19doesn't carry the same weight that it carried A decade ago,
- 51:22right. So you're, you're going to still
- 51:24need to, to, to juggle that. But to your point, I don't, I
- 51:28don't think that's moving the needle for yeah, especially
- 51:31recruiting in the off seas or anything.
- 51:32What's moving the needle right now is can you, do you fit what
- 51:37I do well? And are you going to pay me?
- 51:40It's true, all right, Sheldon's got a head out here, so he's got
- 51:431 he wants to throw to y'all, and I'm sure this is going to
- 51:46Sheldon. Since you got a dip, put who you
- 51:48think who your guy is before you dip out.
- 51:51Yeah, Well, so, so we're talking defensive players.
- 51:56We've talked a lot of guys tonight, IBM, James Jonkum,
- 52:00we've talked, you know, safeties.
- 52:03My question is who do you think is the most important player on
- 52:07this 2025 Virginia Tech defence? And before you give your answer,
- 52:11I will say I'm going with our defensive end who I've heard
- 52:14some good things about during camp.
- 52:15That would be Ben Bell, very highly talented guy out of Texas
- 52:18State. I think he's going to be a big
- 52:20difference maker for this team. So give me your guys top top
- 52:23player for this 2025 defence. Dante Lovett woo Dante Lovett
- 52:30Caleb like breakout season that kids going to be a star and and
- 52:34I I just I'm really curious to see me how he plays against
- 52:38South Carolina. He's going up against Lenora
- 52:39Sellers. You know is he able to to hold
- 52:43his own in coverage against throws from this guy who's
- 52:47supposed to be you know, Michael Vick 2 point O somebody tweeted
- 52:50that the other day. I'm I what?
- 52:52What was it Pete, you said? I'm also Michael if.
- 52:55Someone said that. The worst version.
- 52:57Could just be putting. Stuff Lenora Sellers is Michael
- 53:00Vick with less talent. It's like, yeah, what are?
- 53:02We talking, they tried to, they tried to create a banger and it
- 53:06just. It bonged, Pete said.
- 53:08Wait a SEC, wait a SEC. I got 1.
- 53:12You said something, Dan. Go ahead.
- 53:14Yeah, Caleb Woodson, big problem for this defense has been middle
- 53:20linebacker. He is now, for all we know,
- 53:23going to be the middle linebacker.
- 53:27Big responsibility, pretty much the leader of the defense at
- 53:30that position. You're going to need to see it
- 53:34be strong. He's a stud.
- 53:36I think Caleb Woodson is the most important piece to our
- 53:41defense this year. I think the probably 3 best
- 53:47players in the defense might have already been named by
- 53:49Shelton, Grayson and Dan. But Tyson Flowers will be
- 53:52immensely important this year. And one of the reasons why is
- 53:55we've played two true freshman safeties the last two years, Mos
- 53:59Phillips and Quinn Reddish and thrown those guys to the wolves.
- 54:03And the play hasn't been all that great from the safety
- 54:06position due to the injuries to to Stroman.
- 54:09So bringing in a veteran like him who when you hear him talk
- 54:13and you saw the interview with Colby, like that guy's a stud.
- 54:16Like he is going to be a stalwart back there as long as
- 54:19he's healthy, He's older, he's a red shirt junior, he's fourth
- 54:23year of college football. So I am looking forward to him
- 54:26quarterbacking that new look, defensive secondary.
- 54:30And I, I'm excited to see what Tyson does because I think he's
- 54:34going to be a big part of this defense.
- 54:36No, that that's good, Pete. I was thinking the same thing.
- 54:40Just because of how many deficiencies we've had back
- 54:43there. I'm not going to say best player
- 54:45on the defense, but most important, which is what the
- 54:48question asked, I would have said the same thing you did just
- 54:51because if we're playing Q back there, Q still going to have a
- 54:56lot of growing pains, you know, and you're going to have to pair
- 55:00him with somebody who can overcome some of those growing
- 55:04pains with some experience. Cuz last year if you had Q and
- 55:09you had most back there, that's a youth movement and we know
- 55:14most would come up and hit you. Like no disrespect to the kid,
- 55:17he would come up and hit you, but he would be out of position
- 55:19and hit his own player and then somebody score a touchdown.
- 55:22The Duke game was, was really bad for the safeties, right?
- 55:25And this, this could, it could be a total game changer if you
- 55:29have two guys back there knowing what they're doing.
- 55:31Right. And that's perfect, perfect way
- 55:34to put it. So, I mean, I, I didn't, I don't
- 55:38even know that I would have said flowers his name because I
- 55:40didn't. I don't even know who.
- 55:42I haven't paid attention enough to know who's going to be back
- 55:44there. But that that safety position,
- 55:47it's a it's a safety position, man.
- 55:48Yeah. Really.
- 55:49That safety. Position is is definitely
- 55:52important this year. Yeah, we haven't even flowers.
- 55:54I mentioned the Sherrod Koval. I mean, yeah.
- 55:58He's kind of, you know what's crazy?
- 55:59Brian is like, I feel like, I mean, I mean, Dan mentioned him
- 56:02already once tonight. Cole's kind of been an
- 56:05afterthought and not in a disrespectful way.
- 56:08It's like no one's really talking about him.
- 56:10I feel go going into this season.
- 56:12And I mean, he was such a highly touted recruiter out of Virginia
- 56:15going down to Clemson. And I mean, it was a big deal
- 56:18When? When?
- 56:18We did he come in hurt though. Yeah.
- 56:21He's been, he's been nicked. I don't think he played much
- 56:24during the. Well, he two years ago he was
- 56:27playing really well. He got hurt and then he had to
- 56:30come on the field last year after an ACL and he actually
- 56:34played like OK in the in the time period that he had to play.
- 56:38So healing up from that, could he give us more like I think he
- 56:44could. It's, it's been a tough Rd. for
- 56:46him though. Obviously, like you don't end up
- 56:48back here from Clemson unless some things have maybe gone a
- 56:52little haywire. But between him, Ellis Cash,
- 56:57like we, we've kind of alluded to it like we're going to find
- 56:59enough pieces because I think it's, I think it's Q and it's
- 57:02flowers to start. But there's enough here that you
- 57:05really have some nice depth. Yeah.
- 57:07And I know Pete, we talked about it after the spring game, like
- 57:11Ellis probably looked the best overall in that game, but then I
- 57:16know he got nicked up shortly thereafter.
- 57:18And, you know, seems like he's a little bit behind flowers in
- 57:22Reddish at this point. And I know Reddish didn't get a
- 57:24whole lot of burn during the spring either, but it it's good.
- 57:28I think they're going to play a lot of guys.
- 57:30I think you're going to see at least you know, other names you
- 57:32named at least five, maybe even six of those guys getting pretty
- 57:36considerate burned in in the safety room.
- 57:39You. See that I mean.
- 57:40Comment. And then you got the dark, like
- 57:45the dark horse Jordan Bass, like, we don't know.
- 57:47Is he going to red shirt? Is he going to play any like
- 57:50looks pretty good in practice, but you know, a little
- 57:52undersized, a little hurt. Like we don't like what we don't
- 57:56know. It's going to be a carousel of
- 57:59friends we made along the way. The answer to this question,
- 58:02gentlemen, really is who's the most important player.
- 58:04It's it's every single frigging one of them.
- 58:07Yeah. I mean, I mean, just the
- 58:10defensive performance last year specifically, I mean, just left
- 58:14us all scratching our heads so many times and that really we've
- 58:20talked about it ad nauseam. You know, like Dick talked about
- 58:23it with you all last week. I mean, it's it's coaching.
- 58:27And just we kind of the moment we all kind of knew this wasn't
- 58:31working out with with coach Marv again, not no disrespect to him,
- 58:34was the Syracuse game and that that game kind of was a
- 58:38epitomized his defenses and, and the defenses of old.
- 58:43And with coach Steve Stevekis, like we just can't have that.
- 58:48Like you have to see a stark improvement across the board
- 58:54defensively. I I loved it.
- 58:56I put it on X the other day. The fact that coach Xavier DB is
- 59:00coaching the inside linebackers. No, that fires me up.
- 59:03Like I I love that he was one of my favorite Virginia Tech
- 59:07football players of all, but wouldn't have it any other way.
- 59:10So we all agree, you know, defense has got to be asked to
- 59:15play with poise. We got to swarm with the
- 59:16football. We got to play with confidence
- 59:18and we got to we got to play mean man.
- 59:20That's Bud foster mentality, lunch panel mentality.
- 59:23It's it's everyone's important now.
- 59:27This is, I like what you say, everyone's important because I
- 59:30think with C, because we've talked about it earlier and I
- 59:32think y'all are probably seeing it too, looking back at Wofford,
- 59:36understanding where he's coming from is I do think you're not
- 59:39going to get run-of-the-mill every week.
- 59:41I do think, and you've heard him talk about like we need to
- 59:43occasionally be able to adjust. This is going to be a power run
- 59:46team. We've got to be able to adjust.
- 59:47We can't just Brian, you said this a long time ago about the
- 59:50Fuente Air. We're just going to do what we
- 59:52do Sam Seif just doesn't think like that.
- 59:55You don't do what we do. You do what's going to stop
- 59:58them, because if you do what you do and what you do is what they
- 1:00:01can absolutely feast on, then you're going to get killed every
- 1:00:04game. And I think it goes to a point
- 1:00:07of I think every week, if you ask me what would be perfect
- 1:00:11every week when we go live, Pete, you guys jump on, then you
- 1:00:16talk about it, Grayson, you tweet, you want a new player.
- 1:00:20Well, Grayson, you're more than welcome to come on with anybody,
- 1:00:22anytime. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:00:24I'm with you know what I'm. Saying here every now and again.
- 1:00:26I'm not. But what I think, what I would
- 1:00:29love to see is every week it's a tweeter to talk about.
- 1:00:33That was the guy this week. Tyson Flowers absolutely was all
- 1:00:36over the field. Dante Lovett put this guy on
- 1:00:39lock. They couldn't look his way the
- 1:00:41whole game. Jacqueline Bell just kept coming
- 1:00:43off the edge. The tackles had nothing for him.
- 1:00:46Pause. I pause.
- 1:00:50But you see what I'm saying is I think because of what Ceekus is,
- 1:00:55and like we talk about his mind and about like what he likes to
- 1:00:57do, I think that would be the story.
- 1:01:00It's every week there's a new hero and every week somebody
- 1:01:03does something great. And if that's the story, then it
- 1:01:07goes back to what we've been talking about, what Pete alluded
- 1:01:10to, what Tally's alluded to. We've had talent.
- 1:01:13We have not had the coaches to put these gentlemen in positions
- 1:01:17to be successful. Yeah.
- 1:01:18And Curtis, when I talk about, you know, that do what we do
- 1:01:21mentality, it kind of goes back to what Sheldon was talking
- 1:01:23about earlier with not really having an off speed pitch or not
- 1:01:27really having a counter punch. When I think if we do, we do,
- 1:01:30that's your punch. But when you get punched in the
- 1:01:33mouth of yourself, you got to have a counter punch.
- 1:01:34You got to have something else that you can bring to the table
- 1:01:37and adjust and take away that element that they brought to the
- 1:01:41table that maybe you weren't prepared for or maybe you didn't
- 1:01:45exactly think that you were going to, that they were going
- 1:01:46to stack up the same way that they have in this matchup.
- 1:01:49You've got to have something else in your toolbox that can
- 1:01:54mitigate those problems that arise in a game.
- 1:01:57You've got to have those mitigation strategies as they
- 1:02:00come around. That's about preparation and
- 1:02:03that goes back to coaching. Is are you talking about when
- 1:02:05Rutgers run the same play 8 times and no 15 yards of play?
- 1:02:10Every time. The.
- 1:02:11Flat. That's one of.
- 1:02:12Them the flat was so open. Football is a is, I mean, it is
- 1:02:17a complex sport, but it's really not as complicated as some
- 1:02:21people make it. I always talk.
- 1:02:23I'm not a Alabama fan. By no means we got some crazy
- 1:02:26fans. They all rednecks and correct.
- 1:02:30I'll just say that anyway. But Nick Saban is the GOAT.
- 1:02:33Like that is Nick Saban is the GOAT.
- 1:02:35If you go study how he coached and things he did, he knew how
- 1:02:41to change his team. If you go back and look at the
- 1:02:44early Nick Saban Alabama teams, it was all about a pocket
- 1:02:48quarterback and, you know, standing back and, and, and
- 1:02:52being in the pocket and, and relying on the running game.
- 1:02:55And then they had to shift and they had Blake Sims as a
- 1:02:58quarterback one year and Alabama fans lost their mind.
- 1:03:02Why do we got a quarterback back here running around?
- 1:03:04That's not what a quarterback does.
- 1:03:06Well, Nick knew the game was changing.
- 1:03:08He had to have a dual threat quarterback.
- 1:03:11Blake Sims just wasn't the quarterback that was going to
- 1:03:13take him to the next level. Then he went out and recruited
- 1:03:16the players that was going to take him to the next level, like
- 1:03:18Jalen Hurts and to And then he gets in a national championship
- 1:03:23game and goes, hey, you got to see, but you ain't getting the
- 1:03:26job done. And he puts in a cold
- 1:03:29quarterback that's a young quarterback, and they go beat
- 1:03:32Georgia. You know, again, I don't think
- 1:03:35Brett Pryor is Nick Saban, but I think if you're getting paid
- 1:03:39millions of dollars to coach a sport, you should study those
- 1:03:43people how I study them. And if they can change players,
- 1:03:45you can. We haven't go back to what Pete
- 1:03:48said. We haven't coached them for
- 1:03:51three years. And I'm not saying it's
- 1:03:53magically going to happen this year, but I hope it magically
- 1:03:57happens this year. Well, and that's the craziest
- 1:03:59part is I don't think we've had the best staff in the world the
- 1:04:01last three years to say the least, and we were still this
- 1:04:05close to beating a top ten team, this close to having an 8-9 win
- 1:04:10season with a few. Things.
- 1:04:11Go the. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:04:13All six wins, 10 loins are. Last, Last.
- 1:04:15Year, yeah, I mean. That Medford's got a friggin
- 1:04:19that improved this season. It's got what?
- 1:04:22Yeah. I mean, you're hoping when we
- 1:04:24play South Carolina that it is a close game and that we win and
- 1:04:29then you can reverse all of this narrative right off the bat.
- 1:04:33I mean, that would be the dream scenario.
- 1:04:34But even if Vandy is that it's a 3 point game, which it very well
- 1:04:38could be and it's on the foot of John Love and we win.
- 1:04:42Like that's the kind of stuff we need to happen to be like, OK,
- 1:04:46we're, we're moving in the right direction now.
- 1:04:49Right. So what are the one close game
- 1:04:51that he's won at this point? Was what the Liberty game,
- 1:04:53right? Jesus Christ.
- 1:04:55The Jaylen Holsten Legacy game. Yeah, jeez, the cover was bare.
- 1:05:01What? I mean what?
- 1:05:04And that's no disrespect to Holsten.
- 1:05:06I love you kid, but like man, damn.
- 1:05:09Dude, we needed some fortunate things to happen to win that
- 1:05:13game too. We really did.
- 1:05:15So, so we're kind of on it. I'm going to, I'm going to
- 1:05:17actually add a little bit to this and, and, and get some
- 1:05:20perspective because we talked about at the end of the first
- 1:05:22segment a little bit with the Board of visitors stuff and what
- 1:05:28what Wit's trying to put together needing 200 million to,
- 1:05:32to feel like you're competing well in the ACC.
- 1:05:35But I want to do it this time through the lens of Brent Pry
- 1:05:38and his tenure here. If WIT can go out there and
- 1:05:42secure 200 million, do we have the pieces in play where we're
- 1:05:48still calling Brent Pryor the head coach, the Hokies in three
- 1:05:51years? I want Dan to go first.
- 1:06:01I'm glad I wit shout out wit man reminded me of Latrell Sprewell.
- 1:06:05I can't feed my family on 13 million.
- 1:06:12I want to say yes, but I don't know because you know, if he
- 1:06:17brings in Montgomery, most qualified at the time of higher
- 1:06:22offensive coordinator Virginia Tech has ever had.
- 1:06:26And then you go get Sam Seekus. You bring them in completely out
- 1:06:30of left field. We had no idea like, like who
- 1:06:33you know, like the Snoop, the Snoop, whatever the the the
- 1:06:38famous meme. But then you bring this dude in
- 1:06:41and then you get to know him and he's very calm, but he's very
- 1:06:44intense when he speaks and he's very confident and having half
- 1:06:48the hair, half of it should go like that thing like that is
- 1:06:52like. He's like, it's bad.
- 1:06:54He rocks it dude, and he doesn't care.
- 1:06:57And like, he's so psychotically obsessed with the intricacies of
- 1:07:05what the offense is doing and making sure his scheme is
- 1:07:09complex, but yet simple enough that this players don't have to
- 1:07:13think about it. You know, they just do it, which
- 1:07:16is what this is what they've said.
- 1:07:18The game still have to be played and it has to be executed.
- 1:07:21But I think with the money we currently have, we should be
- 1:07:27able to win 8 or 9 a year. And that's still like should be
- 1:07:31a floor for the ACC, in my opinion.
- 1:07:35But we come from a different era of watching Tech, so we got a
- 1:07:38different perception of what Virginia Tech football should
- 1:07:41be. Yeah.
- 1:07:44I mean, if you get 200 million a year, like, you should be top.
- 1:07:49You should be top tier. ACC.
- 1:07:52Half Perennial playoff team. Can you recite the the end of
- 1:07:55the question one more time just to like?
- 1:07:58Yeah. So like just kind of if, if
- 1:07:59wit's able to get us there, if and if the pieces that prize
- 1:08:03brought on from a staff perspective work out, will we
- 1:08:06still see Brent Pry as the head coach in?
- 1:08:09Three. Well, oh.
- 1:08:09If they if they work out, hell yeah if.
- 1:08:11They work out, yeah. But the question is like, will
- 1:08:14we see still see Brent Pry like because if it works out,
- 1:08:18obviously he'll still be here. But if we're O and two, he gone
- 1:08:22like that. Like if we are O and two, it is
- 1:08:25over for Brent Pry, without a doubt.
- 1:08:28You cannot lose to Rutgers back-to-back years and then
- 1:08:31Vanderbilt back-to-back years and still be the freaking head
- 1:08:34coach at Virginia Tech. You cannot do that.
- 1:08:37Amen. If Brent Pryor goes six and six,
- 1:08:40he's still coaching. Yeah, I just want to let y'all
- 1:08:42know. Oh yeah, you're correct, because
- 1:08:43Gene at CMG Leasing says not if. Not if the first two games are
- 1:08:47losses. If he knew this to South
- 1:08:49Carolina and Vanderbilt, but still win six games, Pete, we're
- 1:08:53going to be talking about this next year.
- 1:08:55He's still going to be here. I don't think so but that that's
- 1:08:57fine. We can have a difference of
- 1:08:58opinion on that. I just think that it will get so
- 1:09:00toxic so fast after Owen 2. You're going to have a big face.
- 1:09:05It will. It will.
- 1:09:06At least it will equal 2021 post Fuente.
- 1:09:11We think. We think Fuente's gone and then
- 1:09:13all of a sudden wit's bringing it back.
- 1:09:14It'll, it'll reach those levels, I want you to think.
- 1:09:16And it'll be lame duck. So what's the fucking point?
- 1:09:18But here's what's got to. Happen.
- 1:09:19That's my. We said Wit doesn't get fired.
- 1:09:22If Wit doesn't get fired, Wit's not firing him.
- 1:09:25A night game in Lane Stadium against Vanderbilt and you lose
- 1:09:31after losing to them the previous year.
- 1:09:33It's over. It is over.
- 1:09:36Steven, I disagree with that. I I think the new hires are a
- 1:09:40last ditch effort. He messes it up this year, he's
- 1:09:43gone. And I know, I know that wasn't
- 1:09:45the question. The question is, you know, you
- 1:09:47raise the money. Is he still the coach?
- 1:09:49Yeah, maybe, maybe. But I mean, if those new hires,
- 1:09:54he was given the chance to fire the coordinators that weren't
- 1:09:57hacking it or letting them take it to motion to go to Ohio
- 1:10:00State, whatever. But yeah, it's this is it for
- 1:10:05him. This is the last season Peach
- 1:10:06right? You start the season O and two
- 1:10:09it's wraps. It's.
- 1:10:09Done. There's so many like questions
- 1:10:13that go along with stuff that I have that my mind just like
- 1:10:16wanders about does Brett Pratt, was he the one who made the
- 1:10:21hires? Like they say he made them, but
- 1:10:24he doesn't make those hires when he comes in as a coach.
- 1:10:26Like it was other people that had that was on the board that
- 1:10:30had. I don't think so.
- 1:10:33I I think that's well. It's I mean everything comes
- 1:10:35from the top down. Wit, if Wit let if wit let a
- 1:10:39first time head coach hire two first time coordinators, which
- 1:10:43it seems he did. Yeah, that's on Wit too.
- 1:10:47But Pride made those hires. There was connections from Penn
- 1:10:50State with Bowen. There was connections from
- 1:10:52Vanderbilt with Marv. Those are his hires.
- 1:10:54The only thing we don't know is were there other hires that were
- 1:10:57vetoed for one reason or another?
- 1:11:00We know who was on the Zoom calls, Brian, when those hires
- 1:11:04were were made. We know the Eye of Sauron was
- 1:11:07was on there. And we all know who I'm talking
- 1:11:09about. We all know who I'm talking
- 1:11:11about. Yeah, I.
- 1:11:11Understand, man, it's a it's a good old boy network and it's
- 1:11:15all about about who somebody else knows and well, let's not
- 1:11:20interview him because some people didn't get calls and some
- 1:11:23people did. So I feel like a lot of times
- 1:11:26these people watch each other's back.
- 1:11:28Again, I don't want to get into the conspiracy, but that's why I
- 1:11:31just be thinking like, I never am, Like, well, he's got to be
- 1:11:34gone. And this is that.
- 1:11:36If if wit's gone, sure, pride's gone.
- 1:11:40I love, I love the people getting sub tweeted in these
- 1:11:42conversations. We had 70 gets sub tweeted
- 1:11:44tonight. We got four.
- 1:11:45We got, we got JB getting sub tweeted.
- 1:11:48I love it. Here's my thing.
- 1:11:52Here's my thing, I really don't know what this year's going to
- 1:11:56look like. Obviously, you said if the
- 1:11:57pieces work out, which was a caveat to the question.
- 1:12:00Yes, he's still here because everything else he's masterful
- 1:12:03at. As far as from APR perspective,
- 1:12:06the shit they sent Jon Gruden was masterful.
- 1:12:08That was a hell of a box. Shout out to the marketing team.
- 1:12:12Can we afford? It.
- 1:12:12But what I'm saying is yeah. Right.
- 1:12:19Here's the question. You have to pick, I think what
- 1:12:22side of it you're on. Because if you're on Twitter and
- 1:12:25you're doing all these tweets like, hey, we're only going to
- 1:12:28win four, If your expectation is four or five wins and then he
- 1:12:32wins 6, don't call for him to get fired because he exceeds
- 1:12:35your expectation. So if your expectation is nine
- 1:12:38wins and he only wins 5, then yeah.
- 1:12:42But if your expect, if you're on there like, yeah, we're going to
- 1:12:45win like 3 or 4 games and then he wins six or seven, you can't
- 1:12:48call for him to be fired because he exceeds your expectation.
- 1:12:51Damn, that's what they said in the board of visitors meeting.
- 1:12:54Jean at CMG Leasing, she said that we're competitive at five
- 1:12:59or six wins. That's what she's saying.
- 1:13:01She's surprised we're as competitive as we are.
- 1:13:04Yeah, she's, she's thrilled that we're competitive.
- 1:13:06It's like 1. Damn, I thought she.
- 1:13:08She also doesn't understand what.
- 1:13:09I want to say this with Curtis, I know, but I want to say this.
- 1:13:14I know you probably got the most pull on this board right here.
- 1:13:18I need you to start talking to these people and let them know
- 1:13:21Jon Gruden looks like Chucky. You need to send me that stuff
- 1:13:27because I would put it to better use than Chucky.
- 1:13:30He's got a whole. He's got a whole freaking closet
- 1:13:32full of it from 10 different schools.
- 1:13:34Yeah, he don't care. He ain't going to use that.
- 1:13:36Send that to me and Dan and Pete and we going to be wearing it in
- 1:13:39the stadium. I want that baseball helmet.
- 1:13:41How can I? Get that?
- 1:13:42Hey, He. Told a really good TOTS rail
- 1:13:45story so I'll give him that. I'll wear that helmet.
- 1:13:47I'll wear that helmet. I'll wear that helmet the worst
- 1:13:50I'll. Wear that helmet, Magic City.
- 1:13:52I mean the gloves. And he got all three helmets.
- 1:13:56The helmet stays on during the lap dance. 4 total helmets,
- 1:13:59right, including the baseball. Helmet you're never going to.
- 1:14:04Call out your name again. Back me up like that.
- 1:14:07Back to what we were talking about here about the fire.
- 1:14:09First of all, my apologies, Whit Babcock has to go first.
- 1:14:12That's fine. Whit Babcock will have to go
- 1:14:14first. It's it's a messy situation.
- 1:14:16Because I want to ask you all a question.
- 1:14:18Well, let's fire Pry for this year.
- 1:14:19You won't to wait. You won't wait to make a third
- 1:14:21hire. No.
- 1:14:22No way. You won't wait to make a third
- 1:14:24hire. He doesn't.
- 1:14:26Get to. There's no way.
- 1:14:28So that means you got to fire Whit by mid-october so you can
- 1:14:31have a new AD, so you can actually hire a coach.
- 1:14:33That's what makes it all very challenging, right?
- 1:14:36And when I when I said price done, I didn't mean like that
- 1:14:39night. I mean like for all intents and
- 1:14:41purposes it's it's done, but. You need to wait the next year
- 1:14:45though. Yeah, it'll be 2020.
- 1:14:47Six, Well, I don't know. I don't know about that, but
- 1:14:49like, let me, let me back up. Hold on.
- 1:14:52I don't. No, no, no, no.
- 1:14:53Hold on. Stop.
- 1:14:55So you're saying you're willing to get wit fired in January and
- 1:14:59try to make a February head coach hire?
- 1:15:03No, that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying if it's if, it's as
- 1:15:07bad. And this is an if because
- 1:15:09personally, I don't think we're going Owen 2.
- 1:15:11I want to make that clear. This is all an if.
- 1:15:14If we are Owen 2 and then it it spirals into a bad season, You
- 1:15:19cannot wait to make those changes.
- 1:15:22You cannot wait. As we love to do by the way, and
- 1:15:26like I Pete, we talked about this on too deep when you and
- 1:15:29Sam had me on. We are traditionally we are not
- 1:15:32that school. We're making mid season changes.
- 1:15:35We're just not that school. But if that happens, we have to
- 1:15:39be. You have you have no choice.
- 1:15:41And y'all that BOV meeting what that told me and this is
- 1:15:46disrespect to no one with knows in one way or another.
- 1:15:52He's not going to be the AD at Virginia Tech for much longer,
- 1:15:56whether it's by his own doing, he resigns whatever or he he
- 1:16:01knows like I or I get fired first because it everything he
- 1:16:06knows my job rides starting next weekend again South Carolina and
- 1:16:14Mercedes-Benz Stadium. My job starts, I'm basically on
- 1:16:18a four month. Imagine the stress sitting in
- 1:16:23that stadium if you're like, if you're with Babcock.
- 1:16:26Like just. I mean, and, and the stress when
- 1:16:29he's watching us lose to Vanderbilt.
- 1:16:31Oh my God. I can't even imagine I wouldn't
- 1:16:34sleep at night. Hey Joe Rogers gave him a a face
- 1:16:37full in in Norfolk when when that ODU loss happened coming.
- 1:16:41Reportedly. From him.
- 1:16:44That that's, that's the word on the street.
- 1:16:46Yeah, I was. I was there for that.
- 1:16:48I had a front row ticket to. That where are you?
- 1:16:50Where are you? Yeah, OK.
- 1:16:52I saw that happen. Yeah.
- 1:16:54All right. Yeah.
- 1:16:55And so like under that, under that situation that that means
- 1:16:59that you're probably if you go into and you actually have the
- 1:17:03the stones to make the move, that means you're probably
- 1:17:06firing wit sometime in October and you're having to get a new
- 1:17:09AD in place at the latest before the Commonwealth Cup.
- 1:17:13It's not good. It's not.
- 1:17:15Good. Yeah, unfortunately, Georgia
- 1:17:17Tech just hired him. So his name is Ryan Alpert.
- 1:17:21He would have been great from Tennessee.
- 1:17:23Give me give me 6 more names then Dane.
- 1:17:28Let's Yeah. I don't know but what I'm saying
- 1:17:32is. He said give me 6 more.
- 1:17:35You can't say, well, the guy that just got hired.
- 1:17:38I was making. I was being a.
- 1:17:39Bitch. Well, listen, we all, we are all
- 1:17:41hoping as much as it sucks, as much as we may not like what WIT
- 1:17:46has done the last couple years, we are all hoping that we don't
- 1:17:51have. It doesn't have to come to that.
- 1:17:52Exactly Like we are hoping that we beat South Carolina, we beat
- 1:17:55Mandy and we're two and O and we're not even thinking about
- 1:17:59Whip Babcock. We're thinking about we're a 210
- 1:18:01football team like that and we just, that's the dream.
- 1:18:04We're. At this point then, so I mean go
- 1:18:07ahead Dan, I'll let you finish. As far as the whole situation
- 1:18:10goes, I think it started honestly, it started with Jim
- 1:18:13Weaver. It it started to fall behind
- 1:18:15there. And then WIT just didn't do
- 1:18:17enough with what he can control. He couldn't control the ACC
- 1:18:21commissioner making the regional Sports Network deals and that
- 1:18:24falling through. And then we've fallen massively
- 1:18:26behind and money. But he didn't do enough to
- 1:18:29control what he could control. And he went, yeah, he went in
- 1:18:34front of this board knowing that he was about to look like shit
- 1:18:39and he was going to have to eat a lot of shit sandwiches to beg
- 1:18:41for money. I thought, like, he did a good
- 1:18:45job conveying how bad it is because when you go in asking
- 1:18:50for money, you're not like, you know, I need like 30 million.
- 1:18:53But if you don't want to do it, that's cool.
- 1:18:54Like, it wasn't like you got to really, like, sell the fact
- 1:18:58that, you know, this shit's dire straits.
- 1:19:00And I think he did that. So hopefully they cough it up.
- 1:19:03But, you know, he did pull the Magic Johnson.
- 1:19:05Like, I don't know, I'm not going to be here type thing, but
- 1:19:08yeah. I think the thing that pissed me
- 1:19:11off the most was like the the thing that we, and I say we
- 1:19:17collectively like, and that's the fan base, but also the
- 1:19:21athletic department needed to be better at, you know, regardless
- 1:19:23of where we're at overall, like we shouldn't be in the bottom of
- 1:19:29public institutions in the ACC for.
- 1:19:32Athletic. But not with our enrollment, no.
- 1:19:34Not at all, but I think Tim Sands finally realized, hey, I
- 1:19:40got to do some shit here so. He knows his days are numbered,
- 1:19:42mixed. There's get him out of there.
- 1:19:45There's no better motivator than embarrassment, and that might.
- 1:19:48They all got embarrassed yesterday and it's it's it's
- 1:19:51kind of crazy because everyone's had those, whether it's David
- 1:19:55Teal or Andy Bitter putting out the quotes and then.
- 1:20:00You know, some of those quotes don't look very good and whether
- 1:20:03they were taken out of context or not, they don't look very
- 1:20:07good. And those people of of that ilk
- 1:20:09don't like to be embarrassed. And they kind of got, they kind
- 1:20:12of got embarrassed and. They said it cost money to win
- 1:20:17and it cost money to lose. Well, you know, yeah.
- 1:20:20That that was that was the best, that was the best point conveyed
- 1:20:24in the whole thing is that if you're you're going to lose
- 1:20:27money on this thing regardless, it's better to lose money and
- 1:20:29have a winning product. And you know, what's funny is
- 1:20:33like the measures that we've taken over the years to save
- 1:20:37money, meaning playing at ODU, playing at Marshall, those have
- 1:20:41cost us money on the back end for sure.
- 1:20:44Because when you go to ODU, you put your head in the lion's
- 1:20:47mouth. You lose twice.
- 1:20:49You are damaging the brand. You are killing casual fan
- 1:20:53interests. You are killing merchandise
- 1:20:54sales, ticket sales. It has cost us more money with
- 1:20:58all the dumb shit that skimping on Fuente's salary pool.
- 1:21:01I don't even like Justin Fuente as a coach, but we skimped on
- 1:21:04his salary pool. We lose to Liberty, we lose to
- 1:21:06all these teams. It costs US money on the back
- 1:21:10end because then we got to fire him.
- 1:21:12We're paying his buyout, the whole 9 yards.
- 1:21:15I was pretty dead after that Marshall game.
- 1:21:16I think the Marshall game wasn't about money and it was more
- 1:21:19about they came and bailed our ass out and got us boy eligible
- 1:21:22so we had to go play a game there.
- 1:21:24I think that's how that went. But still, it was shitty.
- 1:21:27We should have. Beat their.
- 1:21:27Ass little brother-in-law deal there.
- 1:21:30Yeah, exactly. Well, let's, let's go ahead and
- 1:21:32wrap this thing up, guys. So what we're going to do now
- 1:21:35we, we, we've talked a lot here, but we, we got to get some
- 1:21:38record predictions of what you guys think, how you think the
- 1:21:40season's going to wrap up and maybe even, you know, add a
- 1:21:43little little little blurb there to to your explanation.
- 1:21:46And Pete, I'll start with you since you said you don't think
- 1:21:49we're going to fall flat on our face out the gate.
- 1:21:52I, I don't and we could lose to South Carolina, without a doubt.
- 1:21:55We could lose to Vandy. But I think we're getting one of
- 1:21:58those games, if not both, We're we're going to get one.
- 1:22:02And I think the final record will be 8:00 and 4:00 because
- 1:22:05even if we were to go 2 and O and we look like world beaters.
- 1:22:08Well, there was a time in life when we beat Ohio State and then
- 1:22:11lost to ECU the next week. This is something that Virginia
- 1:22:14Tech does. We will have stupid losses.
- 1:22:17And so even if we turn it up a notch and we win some close
- 1:22:20games, eight and four seems like the record.
- 1:22:23I think we're probably three and one in the non con and then, you
- 1:22:31know, we'll see what happens. But like 5 and 3, three and one,
- 1:22:34that's eight and four. That's what I'm going with.
- 1:22:37Dan. So a couple weeks ago, man, I
- 1:22:40wasn't really like trying to do this record prediction shit.
- 1:22:43And then, like, recently, the spirit of college football has
- 1:22:47retaken my soul and I'm juiced. I'm ready.
- 1:22:52I've been, you know, I watched it.
- 1:22:54Yeah. I watched the Josh Peyton
- 1:22:56episode of Busting with the Boys.
- 1:22:58I'm ready. Like, I watched that SEC stuff
- 1:23:02on Netflix. And I think it really depends on
- 1:23:05how South Carolina and Vandy go. I do think we get one of those.
- 1:23:11I'm not going to say we get both, but it is kind of weird
- 1:23:14how the script is flipped this year where you have the media
- 1:23:17darling coming in to play the team with the hot seat coach who
- 1:23:21brought in brand new coordinators and like 30
- 1:23:23transfers. And now, now Diego Pavia is also
- 1:23:27the one with expectation. And I hope we beat that dude's
- 1:23:31ass in Lane Stadium for that. I don't hate him, I just don't
- 1:23:34want him to beat us. So I'm thinking I teeter between
- 1:23:39if we win one of those. I'm saying 8 is possible, but
- 1:23:44seven and five seems to be the first thing that pops in my head
- 1:23:49without a bowl. 7 and five without a bowl.
- 1:23:52Guys, on January 27th of this year, after the season was over,
- 1:23:57it's my pin tweet on my on my profile.
- 1:24:00I said we were going to win five games in 2025 and guess what?
- 1:24:03I'm I got to stand on that. I said we're going to win five
- 1:24:06games and I really think that's the case.
- 1:24:10I I don't know. I, I don't know, man, after last
- 1:24:13year, you're not going to have me out here predicting a winning
- 1:24:17record. This is the show me something
- 1:24:19season. You want me to give you hype win
- 1:24:22a football game. How about that?
- 1:24:25Like I, I don't, I'm done with all this semantics and all this.
- 1:24:28So like hunky Dory smoke and mirror shit.
- 1:24:31No, no, show me something. Make me a fan again like I I I'm
- 1:24:36always going to watch the. When you back when?
- 1:24:39Racer said You got to earn it, yeah.
- 1:24:41They they do. Straight up and you'll all deep
- 1:24:45down, you feel that way a little bit.
- 1:24:47See, I'm getting fired up, man. Because now I know college
- 1:24:48football. Now I know that my Saturdays and
- 1:24:51one Sunday and one Friday are going to be determined by 18 to
- 1:24:5522 year olds and that isn't that just a beautiful.
- 1:24:58Thing, it's the only way to live.
- 1:24:59It's the only. It's the only way to work
- 1:25:01through fall. And so.
- 1:25:03Is it fall if you're not pinning all of your your your well-being
- 1:25:07on 18 to 20 college exactly? I, I said, I said we were going
- 1:25:11to lose the the first two games in my tweet.
- 1:25:13As the season approaches, I'd like to think we get one.
- 1:25:18I don't think it's going to be South Carolina.
- 1:25:20I, I had this thought in the car driving home from work the other
- 1:25:23day. I'm like, I have the worst
- 1:25:26feeling that that that that loss or that game will end in a loss
- 1:25:31and it will be soul crushing. Like I could see it being like
- 1:25:36Boise State in 2010. I don't know, dude.
- 1:25:39I just I have that feeling. And then after that, we'll go
- 1:25:44and play Vandy probably very competitively.
- 1:25:46You would hope, right? But I say five wins.
- 1:25:50Bryson If we go, if we go 2 and O, you're going to start back
- 1:25:52podcasting. If we go OO and two will I
- 1:25:56start? If we go 2 and O, if we beat
- 1:26:00South Carolina and Vandy, you're going to start back podcasting.
- 1:26:03Never say never. I I love joining.
- 1:26:06It's been fun just kind of being impended.

- 1:26:10the best that a bless. You guys are fantastic.

- 1:26:18lot of them y'all and I like to give you all y'all shine and
- 1:26:23I'll stay behind the keyboard and be a little shit from there,
