- 0:08Speaker 1: This is Kevin Sports Verry Daily here on one of
- 0:10Speaker 1: five point nine Radio Folkston bringing you the Folkston and
- 0:13Speaker 1: Hive Sports Show. On today's show, we have local football, rugby,
- 0:24Speaker 1: hockey and running news and we've fought so fucking squeeze
- 0:28Speaker 1: it in a bit of news about the Folkston Senior
- 0:31Speaker 1: and the Junior Park Raum. So it's a marathon season
- 0:35Speaker 1: and I've tracked down our first London Marathon of twenty
- 0:39Speaker 1: twenty five Ian Vousden from the Folks and Running and
- 0:42Speaker 1: Athletics Club, so we'd be chatting to him a little
- 0:44Speaker 1: bit later on in the show. So don't go away.
- 0:46Speaker 1: It's lunchtime. Put that coffee sheet on, I have a
- 0:50Speaker 1: little listen and we're going to start. We've got some
- 0:52Speaker 1: running themed music today and our first one up is
- 0:56Speaker 1: a classic track from mister Lionel Richie and Running with
- 1:00Speaker 1: the Night. But what a great way to start a show,
- 1:26Speaker 1: A running theme show at Lionel Richie Running with the
- 1:28Speaker 1: Night nineteen eighty three. So let's turn our attention to
- 1:32Speaker 1: our guests today. We're joined by Ian Vousden.
- 1:34Speaker 3: Hello, Ian, how are you?
- 1:35Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah good, thank you thanks for having me.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Yeah, that's good to see you good to come in in.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Now you're running the London Marathon. But before we talk
- 1:44Speaker 1: about that, let's just turn our attentions to a little
- 1:47Speaker 1: bit about yourself. Tell us a little bit about your background,
- 1:49Speaker 1: sporty background, you know, did you go to grammar school?
- 1:53Speaker 3: University? And what did you do there? And right go
- 1:56Speaker 3: and then so.
- 1:57Speaker 4: I spent most of my life growing up in Folston.
- 2:00Speaker 4: I went to primary school in Folkston, went to the
- 2:02Speaker 4: Harvey Grammar School. It was fairly sporty at school, did
- 2:07Speaker 4: a lot of football, mainly cricket.
- 2:10Speaker 2: I didn't do much running. Didn't really enjoy running at that.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Was he one of those that had a fair ground
- 2:16Speaker 1: the bike chefrunn How do you know? How so, so
- 2:24Speaker 1: you brought up in Folkeston, you went to Harvey?
- 2:27Speaker 3: What next in your life?
- 2:29Speaker 2: So?
- 2:30Speaker 4: After I went to the Harvey, I then went to university.
- 2:34Speaker 4: I went to Northampton University to be honest, didn't do
- 2:38Speaker 4: too much sport for three years that I was at university.
- 2:42Speaker 2: Then came back to Folkston.
- 2:44Speaker 4: Managed to get a job back in Folkston after my
- 2:46Speaker 4: three years at university, which was with the NHS, and
- 2:48Speaker 4: I've been with the NHS ever since.
- 2:50Speaker 3: Oh right, so when did you first get into sport?
- 2:54Speaker 1: Then? Was running the first sort of attempt at any
- 2:56Speaker 1: sport to get it into it?
- 2:57Speaker 4: By mistake, I did a bit of sport at Cool
- 3:00Speaker 4: as I said, But after I left university came back
- 3:04Speaker 4: to Folkston, I started to play a bit of five
- 3:06Speaker 4: side football regularly on a once a week, played a
- 3:10Speaker 4: bit of squash, but soon discovered the older I get
- 3:14Speaker 4: that my back wasn't coping with that kind of sport,
- 3:17Speaker 4: so I kind of stopped all sports, started to the gym.
- 3:21Speaker 4: Didn't really get on with the gym for a few years,
- 3:24Speaker 4: couldn't really get with it. So I needed to try
- 3:26Speaker 4: and find kind of another sport to get out there
- 3:29Speaker 4: and do some exercise.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Okay, And so your first, your first venture into running,
- 3:36Speaker 1: was that just thinking all right, I need to get
- 3:39Speaker 1: I'll just go for a run around the block myself.
- 3:41Speaker 4: And it was actually during COVID, Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 3:46Speaker 4: I discovered that I wasn't doing any sport at all.
- 3:49Speaker 4: During COVID, my wife, funnily enough signed up to do
- 3:53Speaker 4: couch to five K, so she did it first, then
- 3:57Speaker 4: eventually kind of persuaded me that I should probably do it.
- 4:01Speaker 4: Got through couch five k, didn't really enjoy the whole
- 4:04Speaker 4: process until I was able to run five k, at
- 4:08Speaker 4: which point I discovered, actually I quite like I enjoyed it.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Did you do couch the five k with your own
- 4:14Speaker 1: little program or did you go to a club and.
- 4:16Speaker 4: Yeah, no, it's just just with the app, Yeah, my
- 4:19Speaker 4: own getting out and about during COVID.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:23Speaker 4: And then eventually after I did that, I started to
- 4:26Speaker 4: do part run on a Saturday morning, and then eventually
- 4:30Speaker 4: got persuaded that going to Folkston Running Club would be
- 4:33Speaker 4: a good idea. So I went along to the running club,
- 4:36Speaker 4: did a few sessions, loved it, and I've been there
- 4:38Speaker 4: ever since.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:39Speaker 3: Yeah, ah, that's good. That's great.
- 4:40Speaker 1: That's a great little story actually, because you've gone from
- 4:42Speaker 1: if you're like, not really enjoying sport, and even when
- 4:45Speaker 1: you did couch five k you didn't particularly enjoy it.
- 4:47Speaker 1: But once you got once you got passed, so you
- 4:49Speaker 1: could run without I suppose without stopping, and that makes
- 4:54Speaker 1: it more worthwhile, isn't it.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:56Speaker 4: Once I could get to the point where I could
- 4:57Speaker 4: actually run without worry about running, then I started to
- 5:01Speaker 4: enjoy it.
- 5:02Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Ah right, okay, so what are you doing in the
- 5:05Speaker 1: NHS for a line of employees.
- 5:07Speaker 4: My job is I'm a Cancer Alliance director for the
- 5:09Speaker 4: whole of Kenton Medway.
- 5:11Speaker 2: Oh right, so it's quite an important job.
- 5:14Speaker 3: Yeah, so a cancer Alliance story director.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Yeah all right.
- 5:19Speaker 3: So what is your job description as such where you do?
- 5:22Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 5:22Speaker 4: Yeah, So there are twenty cancer alliances nationally, the one
- 5:26Speaker 4: locally is for Kenton Medway, and my role is to
- 5:29Speaker 4: basically work with all of the experts, all of the
- 5:31Speaker 4: clinicians to try and improve all the cancer pathways and
- 5:36Speaker 4: journey for patients across Kenton Medway, whether that be trying
- 5:41Speaker 4: new innovations or whether that's just about getting a load
- 5:44Speaker 4: of clinicians in the room to agree what the best
- 5:47Speaker 4: thing is for their patients.
- 5:48Speaker 1: Okay, so you're working with budgets and that sort of thing.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah yeah, and.
- 5:53Speaker 3: They're asking you for more money all the time, are they.
- 5:55Speaker 4: Yeah, well NHS yeah, as with everything financially constrained at
- 5:59Speaker 4: the moment, so we have to work within the envelope
- 6:02Speaker 4: that we've got. But I really really love my job.
- 6:04Speaker 4: I'm really lucky. I'm one of those people that really
- 6:06Speaker 4: enjoys I do.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Oh excellent, right, so I did pick up that you're
- 6:11Speaker 1: actually running for a cancer charity, aren't you.
- 6:15Speaker 3: Has that got something to do with it?
- 6:17Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 6:18Speaker 4: So, I mean at the point at which I wanted
- 6:20Speaker 4: to run the marathon, I looked at the options the ballot.
- 6:24Speaker 4: It's just, you know, no chance of getting in on
- 6:25Speaker 4: the ballot. I think you've only got a three percent
- 6:27Speaker 4: chance to get in on the free ballot. So I
- 6:29Speaker 4: looked around to see whether I could get one of
- 6:32Speaker 4: the charities on board. Pancreatic cancer is one of those
- 6:35Speaker 4: cancers that from my work life I know is a
- 6:38Speaker 4: particularly horrible cancer. Survival rates aren't great, it's really hard
- 6:43Speaker 4: to diagnose. So anything we can do to support that
- 6:46Speaker 4: cancer all the better. And Pancreatic Cancer UK are the
- 6:50Speaker 4: official charity for this year's London Marathon, so it seemed
- 6:54Speaker 4: an obvious choice.
- 6:55Speaker 2: For us try and get on board with them.
- 6:57Speaker 1: Okay, So in your line of work, you're dealing with
- 7:00Speaker 1: these clinicushions usations. Yeah, it's easy for you say, but
- 7:06Speaker 1: I mean does your work does it spin over into
- 7:08Speaker 1: the into the wards that you know the people?
- 7:10Speaker 3: Might you know that your clinic cutius to say coming Look.
- 7:14Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean I'm because I kind of have a
- 7:16Speaker 4: strategic role across the whole of Kenton, Medway. I don't
- 7:20Speaker 4: interact necessarily with patients on a day to day basis,
- 7:24Speaker 4: but obviously given the course of the work I do,
- 7:27Speaker 4: I go out and do a lot of presentations. I
- 7:30Speaker 4: do link in and interact with patients periodically. And what's
- 7:34Speaker 4: been lovely as a result of signing up for Pancreatic
- 7:37Speaker 4: Country UK is some of the donations that I've had
- 7:40Speaker 4: and some of the messages that I've had from people
- 7:42Speaker 4: have been have been lovely in terms of how that
- 7:45Speaker 4: counc has affected them and their journey and their and
- 7:47Speaker 4: their and their family.
- 7:48Speaker 3: And have you had much contact with the charity itself.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Yeah, they've been really good actually all the way along.
- 7:54Speaker 4: Once I got signed up to run for them, you
- 7:58Speaker 4: get sent a really detail pack all the stuff that
- 8:02Speaker 4: you need to be aware of in terms of the
- 8:03Speaker 4: marathon itself. They text me every month or team at
- 8:08Speaker 4: the charity to see how I'm getting on, and obviously
- 8:11Speaker 4: they keep an eye on how much money that I've raised.
- 8:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm in raising it.
- 8:15Speaker 1: Oh great, Okay, so we're going to take a little
- 8:17Speaker 1: break now, but we've got a special song, and you've
- 8:20Speaker 1: requested this one, Ian, because I understand on your long
- 8:24Speaker 1: runs you do sometimes take your headphones with you, So
- 8:27Speaker 1: tell us a little bit about this song.
- 8:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:29Speaker 4: So I'm a massive rocky fan and actually to try
- 8:34Speaker 4: and get you motivated to go out on a cold, windy,
- 8:37Speaker 4: horrible rainy day, you need some sort of motivation. I
- 8:40Speaker 4: do listen to music and this is one of the
- 8:41Speaker 4: songs that gets me. It gets me out of bed.
- 8:43Speaker 3: Is it great? Okay, So it's over to you. Introduce
- 8:46Speaker 3: it and I'll hit the button lovely.
- 8:48Speaker 2: This is I A the Tiger.
- 9:16Speaker 1: Hi the Tiger there from nineteen eighty two, and I'll
- 9:18Speaker 1: tell you what Ian's been running around the studio. This
- 9:21Speaker 1: is another a little warm up before he runs home
- 9:23Speaker 1: and doesn't other twenty miles but which is all good training.
- 9:27Speaker 1: So Ian, back to you now. So now London Marathon
- 9:30Speaker 1: coming up. Have you done a marathon before?
- 9:33Speaker 2: I have? Yeah? I was.
- 9:35Speaker 4: I signed up and did and got around Manchester Marathon
- 9:37Speaker 4: last year.
- 9:39Speaker 3: Oh so you've some idea of what you're letting yourself
- 9:42Speaker 3: in for.
- 9:42Speaker 4: I have got a bit of an idea and I've
- 9:44Speaker 4: learned a lot of lessons from last year. In terms
- 9:46Speaker 4: of what I did or what I didn't do. So
- 9:48Speaker 4: fingers crossed. Going into this year, I'm in a much
- 9:50Speaker 4: better physical shape and I'll know what I need to
- 9:53Speaker 4: do on the day.
- 9:53Speaker 1: Yeah, So what was the difference between preparing for Manchester
- 9:56Speaker 1: and preparing for London? Did you think actually that the
- 10:00Speaker 1: club helped? Yeah, massively?
- 10:01Speaker 4: Yeah, No, I think so the things that I didn't
- 10:04Speaker 4: do particularly well last year was all I was actually
- 10:07Speaker 4: ill for about three weeks during my marathon plan really poorly,
- 10:10Speaker 4: so I couldn't ge out and run for three weeks,
- 10:12Speaker 4: which I think had a big impact.
- 10:13Speaker 2: But I think the main thing I hit the wall.
- 10:16Speaker 4: As all runners know about the War, I hit the
- 10:18Speaker 4: wall at about mile eighteen a mile nineteen and I
- 10:21Speaker 4: just had no energy and nothing left in my legs.
- 10:24Speaker 4: So going into this year, I think a lot of
- 10:27Speaker 4: that was around fueling, understanding what I needed to do,
- 10:31Speaker 4: how often I needed to fuel, et cetera, et cetera predominantly,
- 10:33Speaker 4: and how fitness fit I was at the time. So
- 10:35Speaker 4: being at the Running Folks and Running Club, you get
- 10:38Speaker 4: to hear and learn from all of your colleagues that
- 10:40Speaker 4: have done multiple marathons about what's the right thing to do,
- 10:44Speaker 4: what the right training plan needs to be, what your
- 10:46Speaker 4: fueling needs to look like. So yeah, I've learned the load.
- 10:49Speaker 4: So yeah, months or so.
- 10:51Speaker 1: And excuse me, how far are you into your running?
- 10:54Speaker 1: I mean there's a big race coming up at the
- 10:56Speaker 1: weekend down at Lead which is very popular for people
- 10:59Speaker 1: running Spring marathon.
- 11:00Speaker 3: Are you doing that?
- 11:01Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm doing the twenty miler. Oh yes, it's on
- 11:04Speaker 4: my marathon plan. I did it last year ahead of
- 11:07Speaker 4: Manchester and got round and the weather was atrocious. So
- 11:11Speaker 4: I'm just hoping this Sunday the weather's a bit better.
- 11:13Speaker 1: It looks guy and I as actually when it's been
- 11:15Speaker 1: frosty in the morning, so it's quite an early start,
- 11:17Speaker 1: I think nine o'clock. But once you get going, I
- 11:20Speaker 1: mean the weather down there. I've been going down there
- 11:23Speaker 1: for a number of years and there was one year
- 11:25Speaker 1: where we nearly had to stop the race because of
- 11:27Speaker 1: the wind. The wind, the wind blew a tree down
- 11:31Speaker 1: right across the runners, and there was nobody injured, but
- 11:35Speaker 1: the runners had to either scramble over this tree. It
- 11:38Speaker 1: was at a bit of an angle and I was
- 11:40Speaker 1: looking at some pictures earlier on today of runners going
- 11:43Speaker 1: underneath the tree. But the point was the locals came
- 11:48Speaker 1: out and all got the chainsaws, dropped the things to bits,
- 11:52Speaker 1: and when the runners came back they couldn't believe that
- 11:54Speaker 1: the tree wasn't there. Okay, so you got a twenty
- 11:58Speaker 1: miler to do? Is that tapering down now?
- 12:02Speaker 3: After that?
- 12:03Speaker 1: No?
- 12:03Speaker 4: Then I've got I think, the longest run on my plan.
- 12:06Speaker 4: I've still got seven eight weeks left of my plan.
- 12:08Speaker 4: So I go up to twenty two miles, I think
- 12:10Speaker 4: is the longest run that I do, and then I
- 12:12Speaker 4: start tapering after that.
- 12:14Speaker 1: Right, So you've got your charity entry for London. How
- 12:19Speaker 1: are you what's the logistics of it? Are you going
- 12:22Speaker 1: off the weekend?
- 12:23Speaker 2: No?
- 12:24Speaker 4: So the running club put on a bus on the
- 12:28Speaker 4: day of the marathon, so it's an early start. I
- 12:30Speaker 4: think we'll leave about half six, but there's a lot
- 12:33Speaker 4: of people running from the running club and some of
- 12:35Speaker 4: the family and friends are going up. So I go
- 12:38Speaker 4: up on the day and come back on the day.
- 12:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:39Speaker 3: Yeah, Are you for any family going up?
- 12:41Speaker 2: I haven't got. No, I haven't got.
- 12:43Speaker 4: My wife's not coming up with me on the bus
- 12:46Speaker 4: because you will probably or other family members will come
- 12:48Speaker 4: up during the day itself to see me.
- 12:50Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, okay, well it's a great experience. Ian and
- 12:54Speaker 1: I always say to people, if you're going to run
- 12:56Speaker 1: a marathon, run to London, because after that some of
- 13:00Speaker 1: them seem so like boring if you like, I did
- 13:04Speaker 1: the London and I loved every single minute of it.
- 13:08Speaker 1: I wasn't unfortunately my training was down because I'd broken
- 13:12Speaker 1: my leg and I was just really doing a walk
- 13:14Speaker 1: run and so it was great.
- 13:16Speaker 3: It helped me.
- 13:17Speaker 1: It gave me time to look around London and shored
- 13:20Speaker 1: just stop and listen to the music. But you won't
- 13:22Speaker 1: have to do that, there'll be no stopping. So how's
- 13:27Speaker 1: your training going. How's it been going this year?
- 13:30Speaker 4: Yeah, training's going well. Actually, I feel fairly strong. I've
- 13:36Speaker 4: been following so Catherine from Folks and Running Club did
- 13:41Speaker 4: my sixteen week plan. I've been following that fairly rigidly,
- 13:44Speaker 4: week on week, sticking with all the runs. I haven't
- 13:47Speaker 4: missed any runs yet. Catherine will be pleased to know,
- 13:51Speaker 4: and yeah, I definitely feel stronger in comparison to where
- 13:54Speaker 4: I was this time last year.
- 13:55Speaker 1: Right now, you're also undertaking a little project to promote
- 13:59Speaker 1: this your charity and get the word out there.
- 14:03Speaker 3: So tell us a little bit about that. Yeah.
- 14:06Speaker 4: So, because of the work that I want to do
- 14:09Speaker 4: and raise as much money as I can for the charity,
- 14:12Speaker 4: I thought it would be quite helpful to try and
- 14:14Speaker 4: do a short video that I could put out on
- 14:17Speaker 4: social media various channels to try and raise awareness of
- 14:20Speaker 4: both the charity, the marathon, and then what I'm aiming
- 14:23Speaker 4: to do. So I've done a video locally with Cassie,
- 14:27Speaker 4: who I know is on the radio last week and
- 14:30Speaker 4: we're just getting to the end of finalizing what the
- 14:32Speaker 4: video looks like. But she's done a really really good
- 14:33Speaker 4: job in Pullanic's again.
- 14:34Speaker 3: Oh great.
- 14:35Speaker 1: You know Cassie was in last week and we're having
- 14:37Speaker 1: such a laugh because I just imagined her like you're
- 14:41Speaker 1: running up and down the lees and she's going, no,
- 14:44Speaker 1: that's rubbish, and you're absolutely on your knees because your
- 14:46Speaker 1: neck go back and do it again. No no, So is
- 14:50Speaker 1: this distracting you at all? Or is it just a
- 14:54Speaker 1: bit of fun? Really we have a serious.
- 14:57Speaker 2: Yeah, no.
- 14:57Speaker 4: No. So when I first approached Cassie, I didn't really
- 15:00Speaker 4: know what I wanted, albeit I wanted something. So she's
- 15:04Speaker 4: been really, really helpful in kind of structuring what we
- 15:08Speaker 4: need to do and how we need to do it.
- 15:10Speaker 4: And it has been a bit of fun. We've had
- 15:12Speaker 4: a really good laugh doing it, bringing it together. I'm
- 15:15Speaker 4: sure there's lots of outtakes that Cassie will have outside
- 15:20Speaker 4: of the final video. No, but it hasn't It hasn't
- 15:22Speaker 4: been arduous. It's it's been good. Yeah.
- 15:24Speaker 2: Good.
- 15:25Speaker 1: She must be a very fit lady carrying that camera
- 15:27Speaker 1: and chasing you around around the clicks the streets folks. Yeah,
- 15:32Speaker 1: so you're training. I mean it's only in recent years
- 15:36Speaker 1: that folks have got a track and I've noticed the
- 15:41Speaker 1: PB times of folks and running club runners have just
- 15:44Speaker 1: shot through the roof in recent last couple of years.
- 15:47Speaker 1: Do you think the track helps? I know you're doing endurance,
- 15:50Speaker 1: but I mean you've got to do a bit of
- 15:51Speaker 1: speedwork as well, haven't you.
- 15:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:52Speaker 4: I think the track has made a massive, massive difference
- 15:55Speaker 4: just in terms of been able to go regularly on
- 15:58Speaker 4: a Tuesday and a Thursday and have structure sessions, particularly
- 16:02Speaker 4: during the winter months when it's dark, dingy and horrible.
- 16:05Speaker 4: Having the track and the ability to work and run
- 16:08Speaker 4: across sort of run across the safe lit environment to
- 16:12Speaker 4: get the get the get the runs in, get the
- 16:14Speaker 4: miles in has made has made a massive difference, and
- 16:17Speaker 4: I think the membership of the club has kind of grown.
- 16:21Speaker 4: I joined with three or four guys that I call
- 16:24Speaker 4: my running crew and we all egg each other on
- 16:26Speaker 4: support each.
- 16:27Speaker 1: Still they're still there, so that's they.
- 16:30Speaker 4: Won't mind the shout out. That's Tom, Tom aspinall, Phil
- 16:34Speaker 4: Haynes and Jason King.
- 16:37Speaker 3: Oh right, good lads. Yeah, no, I know.
- 16:39Speaker 1: I've been with the running Club, connected with the running
- 16:42Speaker 1: club since the early eighties and I've seen some new
- 16:46Speaker 1: faces down there, and those three are new, relatively new,
- 16:50Speaker 1: and I've seen them all having great times and great
- 16:52Speaker 1: run you know, run and really enjoyed it as well.
- 16:54Speaker 3: That's great for the club, being great for the sport
- 16:56Speaker 3: of course.
- 16:57Speaker 1: Okay, So anything else you want to say before we
- 16:59Speaker 1: pack up, because we are getting near the end now.
- 17:02Speaker 4: I guess I should probably I couldn't go this whole
- 17:05Speaker 4: interview without thanking my family. Doing math and training takes
- 17:10Speaker 4: a lot out time wise, and their patience and tolerance
- 17:14Speaker 4: with me being out most of the weekend running around
- 17:17Speaker 4: the streets folks and saying gate hithe so massive. Shout
- 17:21Speaker 4: out to my wife Rachel, my son Oliver, who's given
- 17:24Speaker 4: me good support, my two dogs and my three cats.
- 17:30Speaker 3: Are they in the film as well? My dog actually
- 17:34Speaker 3: is a film.
- 17:35Speaker 2: Although you may get kept cut from the final way.
- 17:37Speaker 1: Oh yeah, there's another outtake. Yeah on the cutting room floor. Yeah,
- 17:41Speaker 1: and I mean the charity. So you've got this great connection.
- 17:45Speaker 1: Tell us about how people can connect with you and
- 17:48Speaker 1: the charity.
- 17:49Speaker 4: Yeah, no, so I have the charity sets up a
- 17:53Speaker 4: running page, which is basically like a go fungie page.
- 17:57Speaker 4: I've got a website link that we can get out
- 17:59Speaker 4: to to people. So if they are interested in want
- 18:02Speaker 4: to support and help what is a really horrible, horrible
- 18:06Speaker 4: cancer through a fantastic charity, then we'll put that link
- 18:09Speaker 4: out there.
- 18:10Speaker 3: Brilliant, Okay.
- 18:11Speaker 1: And it's been great avenue in and getting insight into
- 18:15Speaker 1: the running club, into what it's like to run a
- 18:17Speaker 1: second marathon, and the motivation that you've got in your
- 18:21Speaker 1: job that's giving you the drive to connect with pancreatic cancer, which,
- 18:27Speaker 1: as we know, and we've known from the past from
- 18:29Speaker 1: former guests that have been in here that have run
- 18:31Speaker 1: for the same.
- 18:32Speaker 3: Cause that you're doing.
- 18:34Speaker 1: A great job and I just want to issh you
- 18:36Speaker 1: all the best and thank you for coming in and
- 18:39Speaker 1: just enjoyed a day.
- 18:40Speaker 3: Make the most of it.
- 18:41Speaker 2: Thanks Kevin, I really appreciate it.
- 18:43Speaker 1: Okay, right, jeez, Okay, So we're going to got another
- 18:46Speaker 1: little sneaky song in here, which I'm sure he will enjoy.
- 18:49Speaker 1: It's another Rockie song and if there was any steps
- 18:52Speaker 1: around here, I think he'd be running up them because
- 18:54Speaker 1: this is the Rockie theme. Going to fly now, where
- 19:20Speaker 1: there you go? That's the Rocky theme from nineteen nineteen.
- 19:24Speaker 1: And that was one form to wish him all the
- 19:26Speaker 1: best of what great interview that was and the motivation
- 19:30Speaker 1: he's got with his job and everything. I'm sure he's
- 19:32Speaker 1: going to do it, and we will find out after
- 19:34Speaker 1: the marathon. Okay, So let's crack on with some sport.
- 19:37Speaker 1: Now we've got some football news. We'll start with folks
- 19:40Speaker 1: and in Victor could only manage a one all drawer
- 19:42Speaker 1: at home to Potters Bar last Saturday. This kept them
- 19:45Speaker 1: in twelfth place and this week they make ging away
- 19:48Speaker 1: trip to Bogna Regis, who are currently second from bottom.
- 19:51Speaker 1: Hi say On gained three valuable points last week with
- 19:54Speaker 1: a two to one away win at Lancing. This lifted
- 19:57Speaker 1: them into fourth from bottom spot, but there still was
- 20:00Speaker 1: six point gap between Hive and Littlehampton who are fifth
- 20:03Speaker 1: from bottom. Remembering that the four clubs the four bottom
- 20:07Speaker 1: clubs are in that dreaded relegation zone Tuesday evenings or
- 20:11Speaker 1: a trip to East Grinstead with two other clubs in
- 20:14Speaker 1: relegation positions in action as things are really closing in
- 20:18Speaker 1: at the bottom four. I've unfortunately lost tow to one
- 20:21Speaker 1: which pushed them back down to third from bottom as
- 20:24Speaker 1: Phoenix Sports bet eer Oftown two to one and jump
- 20:27Speaker 1: one place above them. This Saturday is a good old
- 20:31Speaker 1: fashioned Kent League derby. I remember these days when High
- 20:34Speaker 1: Town entertained deal Town, so we're good luck to Hive
- 20:38Speaker 1: a dealer. I've had a good season, to be fair.
- 20:40Speaker 1: They're round about tenth I think, but they've only come
- 20:42Speaker 1: up last year, so we're doune to deal now. In
- 20:45Speaker 1: the Energy Kent County Premier League, top of the table,
- 20:48Speaker 1: New Romney could only draw three all with thirteenth place
- 20:52Speaker 1: to Guru and anact from Gravesend.
- 20:54Speaker 3: This week they are home to Bexley.
- 20:56Speaker 1: Whilst Hawkinstown, who didn't have a game travel away to
- 20:59Speaker 1: thirteenth place tentered in Town and on Sunday, folcusing Victor
- 21:03Speaker 1: women's team make the short journey up the A two
- 21:06Speaker 1: sixty hill to play Hawkins Town, who would be full
- 21:09Speaker 1: of confidence after their four NIEL win in a friendly
- 21:11Speaker 1: game last week against lid Okay. Time for a scouting
- 21:15Speaker 1: for girls now and this one it just said once again.
- 21:18Speaker 1: It's one of those songs. This was a warm up
- 21:20Speaker 1: song at Race for Life when I remember thousands of
- 21:23Speaker 1: ladies dancing away to this one. And this is called
- 21:26Speaker 1: She's So Lovely, closed scouting for girls, casual little song,
- 21:53Speaker 1: She's so Lovely. Okay, Now, I know we've just done
- 21:57Speaker 1: a running interview, but I've got a lot of running.
- 22:00Speaker 1: It's the running season, so I've got a few name
- 22:03Speaker 1: drops here to shout out.
- 22:05Speaker 4: Now.
- 22:05Speaker 1: Then four folks and running and athletic club runners made
- 22:08Speaker 1: the trip to take part in the Dartford Half Marathon
- 22:11Speaker 1: on Sunday. Catherine O'Connor had a great run with a
- 22:14Speaker 1: PB time of one hour thirty four fifty two and
- 22:17Speaker 1: came first in a Vett fifty five category, whilst her
- 22:20Speaker 1: partner Paul Bartlett also had a PB time of one
- 22:23Speaker 1: hour twenty three twenty two and he finished fourth in
- 22:26Speaker 1: his Vet fifty age category. There was also a PB
- 22:29Speaker 1: for Luke Hicks in a time of one hour forty
- 22:32Speaker 1: six thirty three and well done to go to Leila
- 22:34Speaker 1: Dumont who finished in one hour fifty three thirty and
- 22:38Speaker 1: a special mention must go to Margaret Connley from the
- 22:40Speaker 1: South Kent Harriers, who in the same race was crowned
- 22:43Speaker 1: a Vets sixty five champion in a time of one
- 22:46Speaker 1: hour fifty six oh one. Now this is catching on
- 22:51Speaker 1: this you know, we've got some canny cross news. Canny
- 22:55Speaker 1: Cross the dogs Marley and Banjo with folks and running
- 22:58Speaker 1: club owners Phil and Jenny Hield were in action once again,
- 23:02Speaker 1: this time at a hilly Vegbury Park in a five
- 23:04Speaker 1: k race. Phil and Marley clocked twenty three minutes thirty
- 23:08Speaker 1: four seconds whilst Jenny and Banjo run thirty one forty eight.
- 23:13Speaker 3: Good boys, good boys said, get down, get down. Note no,
- 23:16Speaker 3: there's no walkers today.
- 23:18Speaker 1: Now for those of you who are not sure what
- 23:20Speaker 1: canny cross is, basically, if you imagine a trail race
- 23:23Speaker 1: with the dog and the owner, and the dog and
- 23:26Speaker 1: the owner are joined together. The owner has a lead
- 23:29Speaker 1: around his waist or a waist and it's like a
- 23:32Speaker 1: sort of a bungee bungee lead sort of thing and
- 23:35Speaker 1: that is joined to the dog's.
- 23:37Speaker 3: Collar and so they run together.
- 23:39Speaker 1: So if you've got a pretty nifty dog then you
- 23:42Speaker 1: want to hang on. But yeah, canny cross is becoming
- 23:45Speaker 1: really really popular now, so well done to Marley and
- 23:50Speaker 1: Banjo and well down to you Phil Jenny and a Rundown.
- 23:54Speaker 1: Now of the venues where local athletes ran in park
- 23:58Speaker 1: run low athletes last week were out obviously in Folkeston, Ashford,
- 24:03Speaker 1: Canterbury Dealer Walmer the Lees Park Run which is in
- 24:07Speaker 1: Minster on the Isle of Sheppe Now the Folkston Park Run,
- 24:11Speaker 1: which is run on the Lees is called the Folkston
- 24:14Speaker 1: Park Run, but the one of the Isl of Sheppey
- 24:16Speaker 1: is called the Lees Park Run, so don't get muddled
- 24:18Speaker 1: up and end up in the wrong venue. There was
- 24:20Speaker 1: also runners at Dover Waterfront, Quakers Walking Devises in Wiltshire
- 24:25Speaker 1: and two runners listen to this, Andy Noble and Leslie
- 24:29Speaker 1: Clancy running the Park Run in a place called heirek
- 24:32Speaker 1: g O Kka Cohen which is in Tokyo in Japan
- 24:37Speaker 1: now Apparently there's twenty nine park runs in Japan. The
- 24:40Speaker 1: first one was in twenty nineteen and I think Andy
- 24:43Speaker 1: and Leslie were over in Tokyo taking part. I think
- 24:48Speaker 1: it was in the Tokyo Marathon. So we're done to
- 24:50Speaker 1: them now. Staying with the park run theme, Radnor Park
- 24:54Speaker 1: have now completed the junior section. Have now completed twenty
- 24:59Speaker 1: nine events this week, thirty this week, and so I
- 25:03Speaker 1: wondered how other junior park runs, how the numbers were
- 25:05Speaker 1: going at other local runs. Well, Ashford last week seemed
- 25:09Speaker 1: to be the biggest with one hundred juniors, followed by folks.
- 25:13Speaker 1: Then they had eighty five. Then juniors at Betsanger, Margy,
- 25:17Speaker 1: Herne Bay and Faversham range between twenty eight and forty
- 25:21Speaker 1: two runners. Now as Bushy Park in London is one
- 25:24Speaker 1: of the biggest, if not the biggest senior part runs,
- 25:27Speaker 1: I checked out there juniors and last week they had
- 25:30Speaker 1: two hundred and thirty seven. Now, if you have a
- 25:33Speaker 1: child with loads of energy, then Junior Park Run at
- 25:36Speaker 1: Radna Park is just the job. It's nine o'clock every
- 25:39Speaker 1: Sunday and it's free. All you have to do is
- 25:42Speaker 1: download a free barcode, so your time or your child's
- 25:46Speaker 1: time can be recorded, but please remember it's a run
- 25:49Speaker 1: and not a race. Parents can run with their children
- 25:53Speaker 1: and if you likes to volunteer, that's even better. It's
- 25:56Speaker 1: marshaled around the park perimeter path the runners through two
- 25:59Speaker 1: laps is two k course So if you just want
- 26:03Speaker 1: to find out anything, it's that easy. Just track down
- 26:05Speaker 1: at Radna Park Junior Park Run and find the Facebook,
- 26:08Speaker 1: the website and there's loads of info so doing a
- 26:12Speaker 1: little bit further investigation. The biggest UK junior attendance ever
- 26:17Speaker 1: was at the Bushy Park Run in twenty thirteen when
- 26:21Speaker 1: they had four hundred and thirty two. Although Bushy actually
- 26:25Speaker 1: is a bit of a weird one. It only happens
- 26:26Speaker 1: once a month rather than the usual every Sunday like
- 26:29Speaker 1: everywhere else. But i's be getting volunteers for a massive,
- 26:33Speaker 1: massive park run that they have on a Saturday is
- 26:36Speaker 1: a bit of a tough call, so it's just once
- 26:38Speaker 1: a month. The highest junior attendance worldwide is in Australia,
- 26:44Speaker 1: actually is in the Runner where des Connor Juniors in
- 26:47Speaker 1: Brisbane they had four hundred and thirty eight. Runners are
- 26:52Speaker 1: the UK big ones usually regularly over one hundred, Lloyd
- 26:56Speaker 1: Juniors in Croydon, Newark Juniors in Nottinghamshire, Hillsborough Juniors in Sheffield,
- 27:02Speaker 1: the Mystery Juniors in Liverpool.
- 27:04Speaker 3: Mistress sounds a bit mysterius, doesn't it.
- 27:06Speaker 1: That what a great name, and the Woke In juniors
- 27:09Speaker 1: they all get clocking up for one hundred runners.
- 27:12Speaker 3: So I want to.
- 27:13Speaker 1: Say a big thank you to Junior Park Run Ambassador
- 27:16Speaker 1: Hannah Perrin for providing me with those stats. And good
- 27:19Speaker 1: luck to you, Hannah in the lid half on Sunday
- 27:22Speaker 1: in your build up to the London Marathon. I'll be
- 27:24Speaker 1: down there and looking out for you. Okay, So time
- 27:27Speaker 1: for some of you more music now, and this one
- 27:28Speaker 1: is from ninety three. I love this one and People,
- 27:32Speaker 1: One Night in Heaven.
- 27:37Speaker 3: In Heaven, One Night in Heaven.
- 27:50Speaker 1: The Lovely Voice. I've had a small night and People
- 27:56Speaker 1: and one Night in Heaven. Okay, moving on rather swiftly.
- 27:59Speaker 1: It's time for some hockey news, and there's always loads
- 28:01Speaker 1: of hockey news, So a quick rundown of the results
- 28:04Speaker 1: from last week. The men's first team, well they had
- 28:07Speaker 1: a great win. They beat Canterbury nine to one. The
- 28:09Speaker 1: goals from will Mead he got three, Tom Bean got
- 28:12Speaker 1: a hat trick, Josh Clifford got two and Harvey list
- 28:14Speaker 1: Or got one. The men's second team well they lost
- 28:17Speaker 1: four to two Blackheath. The third team they won three
- 28:22Speaker 1: two against Tunbridge Wells goals from Alex Wissard he got
- 28:26Speaker 1: two and Jack timm He's got one. The men's fourth
- 28:29Speaker 1: team they beat Newingdon and Nomads by five games, five
- 28:33Speaker 1: goals to three. The men's fiftheam they lost four to
- 28:36Speaker 1: three to the Old Willies that's the Old Williamsonians. The
- 28:39Speaker 1: men's sixth team and they had a good win as well.
- 28:41Speaker 1: They beat Gilliam, Gillingham and Courion's five nil goals two
- 28:46Speaker 1: goals from Finn Lettley, two goals from Norville Scott and
- 28:49Speaker 1: Josh Britton got the fifth and the men's team the
- 28:52Speaker 1: men's seventh they beat Maidstone a free one world on
- 28:55Speaker 1: to them. Unfortunately, the men's eight team got a bit
- 28:59Speaker 1: of a tonkin there. They lost six to one to
- 29:01Speaker 1: gore Call. Now the ladies team, the ladies first team,
- 29:04Speaker 1: they had a busy weekend. They're catching up with fixtures.
- 29:07Speaker 1: On the Saturday they lost three to one to Blackheath
- 29:10Speaker 1: and they played again on the Sunday and sadly they
- 29:13Speaker 1: lost the one nil to Oxted. The Men's seconds sorry,
- 29:16Speaker 1: the Ladies Seconds they lost eight two to Canterbury. The
- 29:19Speaker 1: Ladies Thirds they lost four one to Herne Bay, the
- 29:22Speaker 1: Ladies fourth they beat Canterbury five nil, and the Ladies
- 29:25Speaker 1: fifteen drew one all. Well, there's a full set of
- 29:30Speaker 1: games going on down to Three Hills this weekend. We've
- 29:34Speaker 1: got six home games, so if you like your hockey fix,
- 29:37Speaker 1: then get down there and you can watch them either
- 29:40Speaker 1: through the window or on the big screen. Now, the
- 29:43Speaker 1: big game on Sunday is the Ladies over thirty five side.
- 29:47Speaker 1: They travel away to play a team called Surbiton Sloths
- 29:50Speaker 1: in Surrey. Now Surbiton are a very big club. Now
- 29:54Speaker 1: they field fourteen women's and girls teams and twelve men's
- 29:58Speaker 1: and boys teams, so they're a bit bitigger than Folkston,
- 30:01Speaker 1: but they've got a bigger catchment area.
- 30:03Speaker 3: Of course.
- 30:04Speaker 1: They're also one of the oldest clubs in the world,
- 30:07Speaker 1: as being established in eighteen seventy four. Now this important
- 30:11Speaker 1: game is actually a quarter final of a National Cup,
- 30:14Speaker 1: so good luck to the Ladies. I think it could
- 30:16Speaker 1: have been worse. They could have been drawn away to teams.
- 30:18Speaker 1: There's still teams in there in Manchester and Exeter, so
- 30:21Speaker 1: a little trip to Surbiton and good luck to the
- 30:24Speaker 1: ladies on Sunday. Will be looking out for that result.
- 30:27Speaker 3: Okay.
- 30:27Speaker 1: From nineteen ninety two, let's not hang up out. We've
- 30:30Speaker 1: got Jimmy Nle. Ain't no doubt Jimmy nl There ain't
- 30:46Speaker 1: no day out in nineteen ninety two. Do you remember
- 30:48Speaker 1: I'm in I'll do the same pet I remember Bomber saying,
- 30:53Speaker 1: how could someone so ugly things?
- 30:55Speaker 2: So?
- 30:55Speaker 1: Well, that's a compliment, isn't it right? Okay, you're going
- 30:59Speaker 1: to go. It's a bit of rugby newes in there.
- 31:01Speaker 1: Last Saturday the folks from first fifteen traveled to Matstone
- 31:04Speaker 1: and came home with an excellent thirty two points to
- 31:07Speaker 1: twenty five victory. This week it's even tougher game as
- 31:11Speaker 1: they welcome third placed Planet Wanderers to the Burlington Fields.
- 31:14Speaker 1: There were just three games left, so let's have a
- 31:16Speaker 1: quick look as to how they're doing well. As we said,
- 31:19Speaker 1: it's Thant Wanderers this week on the twenty second of
- 31:22Speaker 1: March is a way to bottom club Dartford Valley and
- 31:25Speaker 1: the other final game is at home to ninth place
- 31:27Speaker 1: and Medway on April. The fifth folks that are currently
- 31:31Speaker 1: fifth in the table, and I think they'd be quite
- 31:33Speaker 1: happy with the top third result really to be honest,
- 31:35Speaker 1: because they did go through a spell where they were
- 31:38Speaker 1: getting beaten nearly every week, but they turned it round
- 31:40Speaker 1: and I think they'll be happy with the season now.
- 31:43Speaker 1: The Seconds didn't have a great game last week, didn't
- 31:45Speaker 1: have a game last week.
- 31:47Speaker 3: They also have three games left.
- 31:49Speaker 1: On Saturday they make the reverse trip to thant Wanderers,
- 31:52Speaker 1: who are also third in their division. On the twenty second,
- 31:55Speaker 1: it's home to sixth place a Weavering Warriors, and their
- 31:58Speaker 1: final game is a way to meet Way, who are ninth. Unfortunately,
- 32:02Speaker 1: the Seconds have a A've had a poor season and
- 32:04Speaker 1: are bottom of the table with two points gap between
- 32:07Speaker 1: them and Cranbrook, the team above them, who also have
- 32:11Speaker 1: two games in hand. But the good news is the
- 32:14Speaker 1: women team. Although they are in a small league with
- 32:16Speaker 1: just six teams, that means they only play ten games.
- 32:20Speaker 1: The first of their three final games is on Sunday
- 32:23Speaker 1: at home to Tunbridge Wells Ladies. On Sunday the sixteenth,
- 32:26Speaker 1: they're a way to third place Cranbrook and on the
- 32:29Speaker 1: sixth of April, a second place Folks then travel away
- 32:33Speaker 1: in their last game to play the top club Seven Oaks,
- 32:36Speaker 1: who may have won the league by then because they
- 32:39Speaker 1: are currently sixteen points clear and they haven't been beaten
- 32:42Speaker 1: all season, so you never know.
- 32:44Speaker 3: We'll see what goes on that last one. There's a
- 32:46Speaker 3: few weeks for a.
- 32:47Speaker 1: Few games, Okay, So anyway, that's a bout enough for me.
- 32:51Speaker 1: I will be back on Saturday, but I'll be on
- 32:53Speaker 1: the mic on Sunday down at LID if the places
- 32:58Speaker 1: are moving fast, get in touch with a nice work
- 33:01Speaker 1: dot or to see if there's any spaces left.
- 33:04Speaker 3: I'll be back with Ady.
- 33:05Speaker 1: And so we're going to leave you with a bit
- 33:06Speaker 1: of Elton John and I'll see you soon.
- 33:29Speaker 2: M
