Transcript
- 0:00Hi, good afternoon. Welcome.
- 0:01Miller and Condon on a Wednesday.
- 0:03The Iowa Sports Radio Network. Trent Condon, Ken Miller and
- 0:06Black Betty for the next couple of hours.
- 0:09When did that song come out? 70s or 80s?
- 0:11Oh, I would say 70s. Maybe somewhere around their
- 0:15late 70s. I remember well.
- 0:16It's pretty popular tune back in the day.
- 0:19Thanks for joining Trent. Tonight is we're going to talk
- 0:21sports dot music. We appreciate you being here
- 0:23with us. Here's what's coming up on our
- 0:25program. A couple of John, John Bowencamp
- 0:28up first, he'll recap what he saw at Kinnick Stadium this past
- 0:32weekend. Look forward to catching up with
- 0:33John Bowencamp on Iowa and then John Walters on Iowa State.
- 0:38TJ Otzelberger's contract extension has been made
- 0:41official. That was published today.
- 0:43So we'll talk to John about Iowa State topics, football,
- 0:46basketball, etcetera, with a voice of Iowa State when he
- 0:49joins us at about 12:45. David Kaplan and his normal spot
- 0:53kicks off our number 2. A lot of ground to cover with
- 0:57Cappy, the draft, baseball, etcetera.
- 0:59With the cap man Dansby Swanson hurt, you just can't make it up
- 1:04last night. Doesn't sound as serious, but
- 1:07the serious one is Justin Steele, who had a significant
- 1:11set back and now they're thinking, well, at the earliest
- 1:14it's after the All Star Break, but there's a lot of games after
- 1:17the All Star Break. We'll see what Cappy thinks
- 1:20about that and as the Cubs, although they did get a nice win
- 1:24last night on the road in San Diego.
- 1:28So that's what's coming up on 1977.
- 1:30Thank you, Heather Burnside. Nailed it.
- 1:31Yeah. They got one right for one.
- 1:33You did I, where was I, Cappy and then Russ Cruz going to who
- 1:39sponsored all of our draft coverage, draft fight
- 1:41construction. Of course he was a kind of a
- 1:44VIPAVIP experience for him at the draft last week and kind of
- 1:49live vicariously for fan of the NFL, which we are not.
- 1:52Also the draft kind of his whole experience pick his brain on
- 1:55what he thought his team did. His team is the Chiefs and
- 1:58that's what we represented on stage at the draft.
- 2:01Trenton will make some picks another five and five day, but
- 2:04did you get the right 5? Bruins coming back and getting
- 2:07the victory, they were plus 148, something like that.
- 2:10Ray's were plus money yesterday. So good.
- 2:12We were on the green side of the.
- 2:14Lecture I saw, I saw your pick. You went against your savage,
- 2:18and I saw that go down in flames.
- 2:20How good did he look? Last good, did he?
- 2:22Yeah, pretty good. Only pitch when he had threw 5
- 2:25and a. Third, yeah, it wasn't 1/3.
- 2:27But that was kind of the the pitch limit that they were going
- 2:30to go with. But good to see one of the
- 2:33stories of last year's playoff making his 2026 debut and did a
- 2:38very nice job last night. So baseball was good, hockey was
- 2:41good last night, NBA was. Not very good.
- 2:44Not. Very good, not very good.
- 2:46We're kind of stacking these up. A lot of blowouts, a lot of ugly
- 2:48games, not well, not really entertaining down the stretch
- 2:51type of games. If you're looking for that turn
- 2:53on the ice, turn on the hockey. Absolutely.
- 2:55How about those Minnesota Wild? That was unbelievable.
- 2:58Good for them. They're one win away from
- 3:02advancing in the playoffs. Nine straight first round.
- 3:05It's incredible. I almost want to just ride this
- 3:10story, you know, and Joe O'Donnell will do it for us.
- 3:15You know, my affinity for the sport that's going through.
- 3:18You know, I almost posted it on Twitter last night.
- 3:20You did very close. Almost came to within an inch
- 3:23and it was pre 830 before it popped.
- 3:26Yeah, so before. So I found a picture.
- 3:29I only have like 3 as a kid and one of them that I didn't even
- 3:33know I had, which I'm so pumped up about, is me on skates and
- 3:37like 3 years old. Oh really?
- 3:39Yes, and it's a color picture. And I don't think this is gonna
- 3:43sound strange, folks. Pictures weren't in color back
- 3:47in those days. This just did, yeah.
- 3:50And I should think I think I'll do it later on today anyways, I
- 3:53just I guess that's my my passion for the sport.
- 3:56I just didn't just didn't come upon it.
- 3:58No Johnny come lately it's I would.
- 4:00Love to see a young kid. Yeah, like 4 years old.
- 4:03I want to say 1963 is when it was taken so.
- 4:07You got to start early too. My nephew is going through this
- 4:09right now. They have a mod on skates he
- 4:11started when he was 3. And where?
- 4:12Where does your nephew live? Cleveland.
- 4:14So they're in Cleveland. Yeah, that's where my sister
- 4:16lives, and her husband was a hockey player in high school.
- 4:19What if he played with the Kelsey's because they were big
- 4:21Cleveland hockey players? He he's probably what I think he
- 4:25just turned 40. So kind of close.
- 4:27Mate, in that range, he'll have to ask him if there's any
- 4:30connection. Probably school hockey, because
- 4:31I've got to guess. Yeah, he played through high
- 4:33school and then he went on to Ohio State, didn't play hockey
- 4:35there. That'd be a pretty big step up
- 4:38and I'd jump forward. But they put him out there right
- 4:40away. They said Vinnie figure it out.
- 4:43That's awesome. He's got to be out there right
- 4:45away. That's the first thing.
- 4:46And now the little 1, Violet, she wants to be like Big
- 4:48Brother. She wants to get out there too,
- 4:50so maybe a couple of hockey players come.
- 4:52Into a great sport, no doubt about it.
- 4:54All right, so let's let's start with the NCAA expansion, by the
- 4:57way, not the worst expansion news from the sports world
- 5:01yesterday. I'll get to that in a second.
- 5:04Did you Do you know what I'm referring to?
- 5:06No. Let me start here.
- 5:08There are 9 teams in the CFL. They play a 20 game regular
- 5:12season. That's a lot.
- 5:13That's a lot. 8 of the nine teams now make the playoffs.
- 5:17OK. So when you hear the argument in
- 5:19college football that yeah, it's going to ruin the regular
- 5:22season, well, it didn't. But you know what?
- 5:25If you want to take that argument, move it over, move it
- 5:27N One team is going to be eliminated after a 20 game
- 5:32regular Z. What are we doing?
- 5:33So 8 and I make it. Eight of nine make the playoff.
- 5:37And so that means every team but has a but well, every week
- 5:40there's a team with a pie. Yeah, there's you got a couple
- 5:42of buys. Can't you get a oh in the
- 5:43playoffs you mean? No, no, no, I mean just in the
- 5:45regular. Season.
- 5:46Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. You can't get a tenth team.
- 5:48There what where they've tried the stage before midward.
- 5:52Island. Well, maybe.
- 5:53Remember when the CFL tried to come down here, Baltimore
- 5:56absolutely was it. San Antonio had a franchise.
- 5:59It sounds familiar, Memphis. Memphis, I think the trend well
- 6:02done. And I'm kind of conflating that
- 6:04together with the World League. Team, I know.
- 6:06That's me too. Anyways, so they if you think
- 6:10the NCAA going to 76 teams was bad, Yeah, you know, for some
- 6:13people it is. This was worse.
- 6:15So I heard Derek Stevens yesterday, the owner of Circa.
- 6:19They're all over at this. Oh, I bet they have already got
- 6:21the wheels in motion. I know that not everybody in our
- 6:25audience believes like Trent and I do that every sport should go
- 6:28through Vegas, but they are going to try and be the other
- 6:33Dayton, if you will, for the Pacific Time zones or for the
- 6:37later games because there's going to be an additional 12
- 6:41teams now make the tournament going to be extra games on both
- 6:44Tuesday and Wednesday will not will not affect 1 little bit
- 6:49what we see on Thursday or Friday.
- 6:51So you're Thursdays, you're 11:20 or 11:15 or whatever it is
- 6:55when the actual the curtain goes up on the tournament.
- 6:58You don't have to worry about that being stepped on.
- 7:01But there's going to be another round.
- 7:02And Vegas is their board. It's just not one property
- 7:06owner. It's a bunch of them that are
- 7:08kind of get together on this. They're trying to get to Vegas.
- 7:11Does it make sense? It absolutely does.
- 7:13And if you've been listening to this program, maybe you've heard
- 7:15us mention Las Vegas a couple of times, because that didn't just
- 7:19start yesterday. That's been going on for a
- 7:21while, that if this comes to fruition and it looked like that
- 7:23Vegas was. Birmingham, Thank you.
- 7:25Yeah. Birmingham, the other one that
- 7:26they were going to work very hard to make this happen.
- 7:28Now, that means we got West Coast games.
- 7:30So that means we're going to have a late tip off that goes
- 7:32along with it. We're talking about 6 games on
- 7:35each of these days. Tuesdays, Wednesdays will each
- 7:37have six games on them, Three games of Dayton, three games in
- 7:41Vegas. You stagger them a little bit.
- 7:43You start late afternoon. Yeah, I think you have to start
- 7:47at 4:00 five Eastern. Yes, for our time.
- 7:51You go there, you got a late tip off, then later than even we get
- 7:54in the NCAA tournament where normally you know it's about
- 7:569:00 is what they shoot for, turns into about 9:30.
- 7:59But maybe you can have that 10 central tip off 10-15, something
- 8:03like that for the final game. I'm fine with it.
- 8:06Selfishly, as the self-proclaimed biggest
- 8:09degenerate in Iowa, I like that part of it too.
- 8:12We got more to gamble on. I got no problem with that.
- 8:14And yes, we get to the traditional 64 team bracket and.
- 8:18Nothing changes. Nothing changes once 11:00 comes
- 8:21on Thursday. You're 64, will be in front of
- 8:24you, and does the bracket look a little funky?
- 8:26Sure. And when you're filling out your
- 8:28bracket, I kind of like this team to pull the upset here.
- 8:30But I don't like if they lose that opening round.
- 8:32I get it, it's not going to take away the enjoy.
- 8:35No, no, I don't think it will. I don't think it will don't have
- 8:38a big problem and selfishly maybe an opportunity for
- 8:42Missouri Valley Conference regular season.
- 8:43What did that be? Champion Indiana State Belmont.
- 8:47Drake you and. I, you and I AJ Green LED them
- 8:51to what, 2 regular season titles and never got to a tournament?
- 8:55And we've seen a couple of teams make it here recently, but
- 8:58that's usually the top end. But not had a great season.
- 9:01That Indiana State team should have been a tournament team.
- 9:04I'm fine with that. But we know that's not the
- 9:06reality. There might be one or two.
- 9:08Probably I would like to it's. Going to be the Indianas and the
- 9:12Auburns of the world they're. Right.
- 9:13They're they're going to get in. You're 100% right.
- 9:16Auburn made a nice run in the NIT and then next year maybe
- 9:19they'll get that opportunity. What does that do to the Crown,
- 9:22if anything? I mean, not that it really
- 9:24matters in the grand scheme it doesn't.
- 9:27It's still there I guess. So do you give Vegas that the
- 9:31Dayton experience at the expense of taking the crown away from
- 9:34them? I don't even know if you take
- 9:36the crown away from. I mean, it's, it's different
- 9:38because it's final four weekend. I, I think it still stays.
- 9:43I mean by that point, obviously the opening round is going to be
- 9:45well in the past. So no, I think it's good Crown
- 9:47will stay, keep it out there. They dwindled it down to 8 that
- 9:50field this year. I think that probably worked a
- 9:52little bit. Yeah, I do too.
- 9:53A little bit more likely for the first.
- 9:54Year they had to stay out there for two weeks for crying out
- 9:56loud. I mean, Nebraska was there for
- 9:58like 11 days. Yeah, that doesn't.
- 10:00Work that's too long. That's, that's absolutely too
- 10:03long. So we'll, we'll see.
- 10:05So you're not against this then? No, I it's more basketball.
- 10:08It's more college basketball. I agree with you.
- 10:10And here's the other part. We knew it was coming.
- 10:12It was going. Yeah, this didn't sneak up
- 10:14right? Right.
- 10:15This has been out there for years and years and years, even
- 10:18as everybody's pushed back against it, as everybody doesn't
- 10:21want to have it. It was going to happen.
- 10:23And because of that, I guess I was just resigned to the fact it
- 10:26was going to happen. And because like it or not, yes.
- 10:28Yeah. It's gross.
- 10:29It's not what it once was, but a lot of things change.
- 10:32You got to evolve with it and if we got some games in Vegas,
- 10:34that's a good thing for me. Too, I, I think it is, I really
- 10:36do. Look how many tournaments they
- 10:38host, for crying out loud, right?
- 10:39They host all these conference tournaments leading up to it and
- 10:43it's just kind of obviously they want it for a number of reasons.
- 10:47Selfishly, they want to fill hotel rooms and fill sports
- 10:50books and restaurants. Do they put it in T-Mobile?
- 10:52Or is that too big? No, I think it's too big.
- 10:54I think it would be too big. Thomas and Mac, probably too
- 10:58big. I don't know where they would
- 11:02go. The Orleans where the Las Vegas
- 11:04Aces play at the Mandalay Bay. And Oh yeah, what's that, Mick
- 11:08Ultra Arena. Yeah, Mick Ultra.
- 11:09Yeah, I don't know what the seating capacity is there I.
- 11:13Want to say like 5000? Maybe it seems right, it seems.
- 11:16Small than you want. I mean like an 8000 C, very.
- 11:19That would be perfect. Could you put it in the sphere?
- 11:23What an experience. I don't know the logistics.
- 11:26I don't. Either has there been a sporting
- 11:29event, there was a boxing or there was was there combat
- 11:33sports? Were there.
- 11:34Was it a UFC or something? I think, yeah, that would be
- 11:38intriguing, something I got to. Get there, Trent, I've got to
- 11:41get there. And you know how I avoid the
- 11:43strip now. But if unless they can roll the
- 11:46spear to the to Fremont Street. Oh, I'd love to see that.
- 11:51I don't know what the capacity is, but what a cool place.
- 11:55It's it's about 17,000 and I don't know if that's for
- 11:57concerts. I would now would it confuse the
- 12:00players on the floor to set themselves up in the right in
- 12:03the actual sphere? But going back to when I was in
- 12:06Houston for the Elite 8, those new scoreboards that have like
- 12:11the video on the inside too, so the courtside people can look up
- 12:14and see. They do I I know that.
- 12:16So you deal with that, I guess already.
- 12:18And then of course, the screen went dark as the buzzer was
- 12:20going off during the game. Illinois, we had a nice 15
- 12:23minute delay. But yeah, I don't know the
- 12:27logistics behind it. Do you have to maybe have a
- 12:29scoreboard there hung in the middle so it just sweats from
- 12:33looking up? Yeah, it's too much.
- 12:34It's not going to happen. Probably a little too.
- 12:36I like the idea, but the more I kind of hash it out a little
- 12:39bit, it seems like. Yeah, that's a little a little
- 12:41bit too pricey. UFC three O 6 was at the speed.
- 12:44That's what it was. And the Floyd Mayweather, Manny
- 12:47Pacquiao match up coming up this fall.
- 12:49No, hang on a second. Yeah.
- 12:51Oh, they're fighting again. Oh absolutely, there's money to
- 12:53be had. I mean, people are buying these
- 12:55things. They are.
- 12:57I guess Floyd's got to pay off those gambling debts.
- 13:00He fires. Yeah, he does.
- 13:02Yeah, he does. And usually not well.
- 13:05Yeah, don't know. I just, I mean, I've seen him
- 13:08when we were headquartered at the M and he would be in the VIP
- 13:12and it would be a Tuesday night and I'd be staying there might
- 13:15be one of the few in the book and him and his posse or his
- 13:18entourage were there and he'd shadow box through the aisles on
- 13:22the way to the windows. It's just anyways, but pretty
- 13:27cool Vegas, some fun stories over the years.
- 13:29That was that was one of them anyways, so we'll see where it
- 13:33goes. But it's but it is going to
- 13:34happen now. Is this going to happen as soon
- 13:36as this year as this coming tournament you sound like?
- 13:40We're here it is, yes. Ready or not, here we come.
- 13:42They have to get approval from both the women's and the men's
- 13:44side of things and from their governing board of the College
- 13:47Basketball Association. That's a hurdle.
- 13:50It's going to. Happen.
- 13:50So we'll know pretty quickly who's going to be the other
- 13:53Dayton, I would assume, right? I mean, they got to put that
- 13:55together, I'm sure logistically to make that come together.
- 13:58And I think it's just as too easy.
- 14:01It's too simple. It's got, it's a great airport,
- 14:03yes. Easy to now easy flights.
- 14:06I mean think of this type. Of just one piece of advice and
- 14:08maybe it's different for you, don't get an Uber.
- 14:11The Uber line's like hours get. The cab.
- 14:14Oh, the cab line. Nobody uses it.
- 14:15Nobody. Uses it anymore.
- 14:18It's a good call, It really is. I I never understand but back in
- 14:21the day get it before Uber. What a disaster on a Friday
- 14:25after. I mean the queue just went on
- 14:27and on anyways. We're past that, now we are and
- 14:30now it's back coming full circle.
- 14:32It is That's that's a good tip and one that.
- 14:34Avoid the avoid the Uber because they cabs in Vegas have been
- 14:38forced to kind of adopt Uber policy, right?
- 14:40If you're going to this part of the strip is 20 bucks.
- 14:42This part will cost you 30. Now downtown's a different
- 14:45animal. They're going to run the meter
- 14:46on you because it's obviously further away.
- 14:49But anyways, so there we are. I like it.
- 14:52I think it's great. There's going to find a place.
- 14:54What other city would make sense if it's not Vegas?
- 14:56Well, that's the thing. Like.
- 14:57Who else is going to compete? For this, the year that Iowa
- 15:01made the Final Four run on the women's side and they've had to
- 15:03play in Seattle in the Sweet 16 Elite 8.
- 15:05How many? Seattle is not easy to get to in
- 15:07comparison. Yes, Spokane.
- 15:09They had the Sweet 16 Elite 8, what, two years ago?
- 15:12Spokane, right? In two days time you're coming
- 15:15together for fans to travel and it's not like there's a ton of
- 15:19teams up there and I. Think you have to find an
- 15:21airport hub, meaning that Atlanta an Atlanta a Minneapolis
- 15:26a Denver. You know, somewhere where you
- 15:28don't have to double jump to get to your destination.
- 15:32Obviously the hotels are plentiful, especially at that
- 15:36time that that portion of the week Wednesday, Thursday before
- 15:40you know the IT really hits the fan coming up in on Thursday.
- 15:44Well, Wednesday night and Thursday love it gonna happen
- 15:47and I can't wait for it to do so.
- 15:49A baseball from last night. Any anything that caught your
- 15:52attention. You know, one thing we haven't
- 15:54talked much about with the Cubs and just a couple of great
- 15:56defensive plays again last night and just how.
- 15:58Great. This.
- 15:58They really are, aren't they? I mean up the middle.
- 16:01Yeah, Solid is out Swansea, Nico and PCA.
- 16:05Bregman's outstanding He. Is too.
- 16:07Yep, Yep. Ian Cap has won four Gold
- 16:09Gloves. I know it's left field, but
- 16:11still, he's won four Gold Gloves you're talking about, plus
- 16:13defenders and over half the spots and.
- 16:16And see, a Suzuki made a play last night, right field just
- 16:18blew me away. Yes, I thought I had no chance
- 16:20to get that ball. Entertaining.
- 16:22Last night, I watched a lot more of the Cubs than I anticipated I
- 16:25was last night. Yeah, the NBA stunk.
- 16:28And after the hockey got over, oh boy, at the end of the first
- 16:31period I was yelling at the TV that power play.
- 16:33Oh, the one they took off. Oh, and the goal, that was a
- 16:38frustrating end of the period, but a lot of hockey last night.
- 16:40And here's the thing about the goal that they took off the
- 16:43board. It didn't go in off Boldy, it
- 16:45went off a Dallas Star defenceman.
- 16:48Now I guess that the at the end of the day, the goalie was still
- 16:51interfered with, but it was your own player that put it in the
- 16:54net. Should that matter?
- 16:56Apparently it doesn't. So we Fast forward to tomorrow
- 16:58night, 630 puck drop in Saint Paul.
- 17:01Keep going. Guess what?
- 17:02Guess what else is happening? Oh.
- 17:05The T Wolves. Guess what else is happening?
- 17:08The Twins. Dozens of us there.
- 17:10The big. Three, can the Vikings have an
- 17:13open scrimmage or something, right, to really make it
- 17:16difficult on residents of the Twin Cities?
- 17:19But anyways, Fast forward to tomorrow night.
- 17:20Yes. As a Minnesota sportsman outside
- 17:22of the Vikings. You're expecting Dallas to win
- 17:24comfortably and an injury or two probably to Boldier Caprisov.
- 17:28Plus 225 by the way, on the stars to lay the putt 1 1/2 in
- 17:32that one. I've I've already I've already
- 17:35dabbled. So you took the stars?
- 17:36Stars might as 1 1/2. Yeah, and then it'll go to Game
- 17:407. I love game seven.
- 17:42I'd be OK if that, if, if Minnesota gets it done tomorrow
- 17:46night like it's, I think it's gonna be good for us.
- 17:48And hockey's a tough sell. It's easier in the playoffs.
- 17:50Yep, significantly easier in the playoffs and if we have a team
- 17:54from here and you know, with a guy that a lot of people in the
- 17:57community took a liking to when Joe was here, Joe O'Donnell, the
- 18:01voice of the Wild, and you see the guys going back and forth, I
- 18:04think that'd be good for the sport in Des Moines as far as
- 18:08interest. Tonight, Pittsburgh, Philly has
- 18:11me intrigued. Me too.
- 18:12Come on, Pittsburgh. Yeah.
- 18:13Come on, Sidney Crosby. After taking the first three
- 18:17Flyers looking dominant, yeah, at times in that we did.
- 18:21And hockey is just, that is the one sport.
- 18:24Yes, we've seen it in baseball once.
- 18:26Yeah, yeah. Red Sox.
- 18:27Yankees. But the way that just momentum
- 18:30seems to change one just one little minute and how quickly
- 18:36things can change, Billy have to win tonight.
- 18:38I think so. I do too, and I think it might
- 18:40be a little bit tight tonight. Uh huh.
- 18:41The tight sphincter. Yes, absolutely.
- 18:44I think it might be lean in. Penguins, are you in?
- 18:46Game six, What else? We get Tampa and Montreal in
- 18:48that series. Shift back.
- 18:50It's been a great series. Montreal is way better than I
- 18:52thought. Way better than I thought.
- 18:54I want to see how Buffalo responds against Boston after
- 18:56they gave one up, lost in overtime.
- 18:58So you had the Bruins, right? I did.
- 19:00That's why that answered. You said yeah.
- 19:02Nice goal, too. Wasn't a cheap goal.
- 19:03No, he means pastor, not just a yeah.
- 19:05Hell of a move. All right, we'll take your time
- 19:07out. We'll go to break, come back and
- 19:09the first of the two, Johns is going to join us.
- 19:11Bowen camp on the Hawks. Walters to come on Iowa State
- 19:14before we had to break. However, you can head to KX and
- 19:18o.com. The keyword this hour in this
- 19:21nationwide contest is grand. Grand.
- 19:23It's your chance to win $1000 grand at kxno.com.
- 19:29Benny sent me this, so I don't want to see all his work go for
- 19:32not Baltimore, Memphis, Birmingham, Shreveport, San
- 19:35Antonio, Las Vegas and Sacramento, all head franchise.
- 19:38I don't remember that, Miller. I believe.
- 19:40It's not saying that you're wrong, Benny.
- 19:42I just. I don't recall those days.
- 19:44Not a big CFL fan. No.
- 19:45We'll take a time out. John Bowen camp next.
- 19:48Miller and Condon underway. Glad you're with us as we come
- 19:52at you on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 19:54I'm Miller and Condon. Welcome back.
- 19:58Sweet. Take you until 2:00.
- 19:59John. Walter's still to come.
- 20:03Going to talk to John Bowencamp. Boys, you see, Otani got knocked
- 20:05around pretty good last night. Good.
- 20:06Yeah, not good. Doesn't sound good for Otani.
- 20:09Shut him down. Yep, No he didn't.
- 20:14Well, yeah, yeah, but maybe I'm exaggerating a little bit.
- 20:17John Bowen Camp but. Just a bit.
- 20:20Yeah, just So what? I saw the box score.
- 20:22He got beat 21, right? Yeah, but he pitched pretty.
- 20:26He wants to win the Cy Young. He has said as much.
- 20:30Well, he's gonna win Cy Young and MB.
- 20:32Well, if he what he could not without the realm of
- 20:35possibility. P2 I don't go to.
- 20:38OK, so odd facts known by few. The guy who's number 2IN ERA
- 20:42right now, Jose Soriano, pitched here in Burlington in 2018 and
- 20:4729 how? About that good stuff.
- 20:49And you covered him, I'm guessing, right?
- 20:51Yeah, I did. And you know, the interesting
- 20:53thing was when he was here, he was only like maybe 18 years old
- 20:57and you could see he had really good stuff.
- 20:59He just didn't. He just didn't have the command
- 21:02and so he has been going through this organization for a long
- 21:06time and now, you know, mid 20s now, all of a sudden he's one of
- 21:09the best pitchers in baseball and it's it's kind of fun to
- 21:12watch, you know, when I thought, you know, when he's here, you
- 21:16know, so. And to see what they've become.
- 21:18Good stuff. All right, Well, we'll ask you.
- 21:19Go ahead. Trent, I got I just want quickly
- 21:22for our friends down there in Burlington and people listen to
- 21:24Quad Cities or Iowa City on our network across the state.
- 21:28How has what are we five years in now to the Prospect League
- 21:31with the the evolution of things?
- 21:34How has that gone overall for not just Burlington, but cities
- 21:37as a whole over there on the river that have gone through and
- 21:39making that transformation? I think it's it's gone.
- 21:43Well, it's, it's, I know it has. I mean, it hasn't Clinton to, I
- 21:46mean, because, because Clinton wants their team.
- 21:48But now they're established a little bit and now the word has
- 21:51gotten out to college coaches. Hey, this is kind of a neat
- 21:55place to go play. And so like, you know, maybe two
- 22:00or three years ago you were maybe at this point of the year,
- 22:04you might have maybe 2829 guys in the roster because you can
- 22:08carry up the 40. And I got the roster the other
- 22:11day and they are almost at 40. And it's like they've kind of
- 22:16established A pipeline now of players.
- 22:18They know they get treated well here.
- 22:20There is even talk among, you know, in the organization that
- 22:23it is going to cost a lot of money about putting artificial
- 22:26turf down that community field to where they could play college
- 22:30games in the in the spring. You know, because I guess a lot
- 22:33of schools up in Minnesota, Wisconsin are looking for places
- 22:37to play in late March and early April.
- 22:39And so they're trying to make it where there's a lot of baseball
- 22:43there, you know, during, you know, during the offseason to
- 22:47kind of offset that and make a little extra money.
- 22:50So I mean, they it's worked and I mean, the league is growing.
- 22:54They've added teams. Eventually it's going to get to
- 22:57that point where there are just too many teams you're not
- 22:59getting. But they've done a really good
- 23:01job of establishing themselves with college baseball programs
- 23:05in the in the really the key in this league is not who you get
- 23:08right away. It's who you get in July, you
- 23:11know, because a lot of kids have to go home.
- 23:12A lot of kids, you know, their coaches limit them on at bats
- 23:16and innings and all that. And so it's like that second
- 23:18wave of players. And last year they did a really
- 23:21good job of it and they made the playoffs.
- 23:22And so the the attendance is about the same.
- 23:26It's probably a little less per game, but the the fans are still
- 23:30coming out and I think that's a good thing.
- 23:32Absolutely, baseball in Americana and summer night,
- 23:35maybe a train will go by, right? And really several, yes.
- 23:39Good stuff, John, Let's go. Let's go back to Saturday.
- 23:43Brown or Heklinski for you. What?
- 23:45Who caught your eye? You know, you know, looking at
- 23:49what I saw them, I, I, I can't make a choice right now.
- 23:54I, I, I really, I didn't think they were going to have a clear
- 23:58#1 when this ended and they don't.
- 24:01And, and I think and, and, you know, it was something that that
- 24:05Tim Western said, you know, when the court, when we saw the
- 24:08coordinators earlier in the week, that, that it's a good
- 24:10problem to have, you know, but I do think by the time the opener
- 24:16gets around, they will have a clear cut #1 but I think they're
- 24:19also going to have a pretty good number too.
- 24:21And so I mean, I don't think they can go wrong either way.
- 24:24In my mind, it's just a matter of we haven't seen the other 14
- 24:29practices. So we don't know what that was
- 24:31like. And so but judging by
- 24:34everybody's comments and all that, it's still pretty wide
- 24:37open. And I think it's going to be
- 24:38wide open until that final week of camp, you know, so.
- 24:42We heard so much buzz about Tony Diaz throughout camp and he got
- 24:46a little bit banged up there. But are you hearing the same
- 24:49things? We we've fallen for this before.
- 24:51Caleb Brown comes in from Ohio State, played as a true freshman
- 24:54in that wide receiver room. He's got to be stunned.
- 24:56But did Feretz extol his virtues the way he did?
- 24:59Not like that. And.
- 25:00No. Is it different?
- 25:02I mean, are you willing to put it out there that this is going
- 25:04to be different? This is the one.
- 25:05This is the one. They got a real wide receiver
- 25:07out there to go along with Van der Zee.
- 25:10I think I think it's it to me, it's the production that he had
- 25:14before he came here. You know that he was that he was
- 25:17productive at his previous place.
- 25:19And so that says to me that he might be the real thing.
- 25:23And so in listening to the guys talk about him, the other
- 25:26players talk about it, there's a lot more of a rave around him, I
- 25:30think. So I'm thinking more big.
- 25:32They are. I think they're a lot better
- 25:33right now at those two spots. And I, I, so if you, once you
- 25:38decide on a quarterback, it'll be interesting to see how they
- 25:41use all of that in the passing game.
- 25:43I mean, obviously you've got a really good tight end.
- 25:46So now you, you know, if you've got two really good right
- 25:48receivers, do they start throwing the ball a little bit
- 25:50more? Do they start doing some
- 25:52different things? And that'll be really
- 25:54interesting to see, you know, as we get into September and as
- 25:57they get in the game. What?
- 25:59What caught your eye on the defensive side of the ball,
- 26:01John? I, you know, listening all all
- 26:05through the week, you know, and through the weeks and all that,
- 26:08I mean, I still think there's just a lot.
- 26:10Here's my thing. The linebackers to me are going
- 26:13to be the really fun group to watch.
- 26:15And you know, I mean, I'm thinking of and I'm thinking
- 26:17southeast Iowa here, Cam Buff and what he might be able to do.
- 26:23And so that's going to be the one because that's going to be
- 26:25one of the guys that I really want to watch on this defense as
- 26:29they get into the fall and all that.
- 26:31How good he can be, you know, because I know, I mean he, I
- 26:34know how good he was at the high school level.
- 26:37I know what kind of athlete he is.
- 26:40What can they do with him? And then he's going to be, I
- 26:42think he might be one of those guys in this defense that we're
- 26:45going to really like when we get into the seat.
- 26:48And I thought it was interesting, Phil Parker talking
- 26:51about him, and it felt like, well, they'll probably rely on
- 26:54the veteran with Montgomery at the middle spot and Buffington,
- 26:57maybe he's the guy outside. I don't know if that's going to
- 26:59be the case. I think Buffington with that
- 27:01sideline to sideline speed that he has, he's going to be able to
- 27:03cover a lot up. But to me, it doesn't matter if
- 27:06you can't have those guys occupying space upfront and
- 27:08specifically a defensive tackle. Is that the biggest concern with
- 27:12this Iowa football team? It is, to me, defensive tackle,
- 27:15lack of depth. Hawthorne, the one guy that we
- 27:18know he was out for most of the spring just upfront because
- 27:21we've seen this a couple of times throughout the 27 years.
- 27:24When they're not good at defensive tackle, they're not
- 27:26good defensively. Right.
- 27:28And you know, and I think, you know, I said that at the
- 27:31beginning of camp that that was that whole line and getting that
- 27:35back to that, where you can have the depth they've had in the
- 27:38past, but that was going to be the biggest one of the bigger
- 27:41keys of the spring. And I don't I don't know if they
- 27:43kind of figured that out yet. So that might be one of those
- 27:46things that that as you go in the in the, you know, in August,
- 27:50they're still going to be kind of lucky, but they do have to be
- 27:53better up front. I mean, like you said, I don't
- 27:55think you want to rely on you don't want to have your
- 27:57linebackers put and a bad situation.
- 27:59To me defensively, that is going to be one of the biggest keys is
- 28:03how that group comes together. And I said that too, you know, I
- 28:07on both fronts, offensive and defensive line, how both of
- 28:10those groups come together because so much of what Iowa
- 28:13does relies on all of that. And so did they learn a lot
- 28:18about those those two areas in camp?
- 28:20I don't know, but we're going to find out and I think we'll find
- 28:23out more as we get into as we get into August and we start
- 28:26talking about this team. Morgan.
- 28:28John, when you watch tight end Vonomy, am I saying his name
- 28:32right? Vonami.
- 28:33Vonami. Vonami.
- 28:34Vonami DJ Von Nominee, you had a breakout year last year, really
- 28:38had a nice year. Does he look to your eyes like
- 28:42he's about to join the the list of Iowa tight ends that go on
- 28:46and make an impact at the next level?
- 28:48Have you seen enough of him to see he does OK?
- 28:51Yeah, I think so. I mean, I mean, I mean,
- 28:53obviously he's going to be he I think he's going to be a big
- 28:56part of this offense. And, you know, and so it's just
- 29:01and so I think, yeah, I think he can be.
- 29:04And I mean, there's there's going to be a lot of, you know,
- 29:06there's going to be a lot of attention on him when we get
- 29:09back into the season just because of what he's been able
- 29:11to do so far. And, you know, kind of the talk
- 29:14around him, you know, when you were listening to other players,
- 29:17you know, in the times we've had with them here in the last
- 29:19couple weeks, they all like, you know, so you could kind of see
- 29:22that he's really kind of standing out right now.
- 29:25And I think he's going to be a lot of fun to watch this and.
- 29:29The the reason I bring him up is obviously Iowa had seven players
- 29:32drafted over the weekend in the NFL draft.
- 29:34And when I'm looking at lists of of the next group of Hawkeyes to
- 29:37hear their name called Vanam, he's he's already out there for
- 29:40next year. So he would, he's a red shirt
- 29:42sophomore, so he's eligible to go.
- 29:45That's why I asked that anyway. Do you Does he appeared.
- 29:47Like that to you too, Tracy? Oh, absolutely.
- 29:49I mean, you would think of a guy that was playing quarterback in
- 29:51high school just a couple years back.
- 29:52Had a great year last year. When you heard Lester talking
- 29:54about his blocking belt, it's not just this is a pass catcher,
- 29:57it's kind of that flex hybrid wide receiver type.
- 29:59Now this is a guy that can do it all.
- 30:00And we know the way the NFL camps look at it, I think Trevor
- 30:04Lauch is also going to be a guy that's going to have an
- 30:06opportunity to hear his name called, an OK peeper.
- 30:09Kirk mentioned that too after practice.
- 30:10I thought that was interesting. The peeper is their center I
- 30:12think started today after a lot of shuffling around throughout
- 30:15that one. Any questions?
- 30:16Yeah. Yes, no doubt.
- 30:17Hey, John, before we let you go, want to talk a little bit of
- 30:20basketball with you. Haven't had an opportunity since
- 30:22Iowa went into the portal. Illinois State, we know you
- 30:25watch some NBC hoops as well with Coleman, Tyree Coleman
- 30:28coming in and then McKeever out of Saint Mary's.
- 30:30Your thoughts on what Ben McCollum did in the transfer
- 30:33portal? I thought he got guys that fit
- 30:35what he wants to do. And you know, and so again, they
- 30:40didn't have to do a lot because, and I, I think I said this last
- 30:43time we talked that there's going to be a lot of addition
- 30:46just within the roster that you were going to see guys take that
- 30:50next step for, you know, Tate Sage from this year to next year
- 30:53and Cooper Koch from this year to next year.
- 30:55And so they didn't really need a lot when you think about it.
- 30:59And I think they got two guys that that really fit with what
- 31:04he wants to do. He was very, I think he I think
- 31:06he was very selective in his shopping and then then then
- 31:09portal, as I call it Amazon. But it's like I, I think he did
- 31:13a really good job of finding guys that fit what he wants to
- 31:17do. And it'll be interesting to see
- 31:20how they they kind of work in. But I think it's going to be a
- 31:23lot of fun to watch this group, and I think it's going to be a
- 31:25lot of fun to watch this group grow from November to March like
- 31:29this last he did. John Bowen, Camp, Associated
- 31:32Press, Iowa College hoops.com, that's where you can find him
- 31:36and read him and hear him periodically here every couple
- 31:39of weeks with Miller and Condon. John, thanks for jumping on
- 31:42again. Appreciate it.
- 31:43We'll talk to you down the road. See you buddy.
- 31:45Yep, have a good. One the same John Bowencamp as
- 31:48we check in on Hawkeye topics. So last week we talked with
- 31:53Addison Belton with the Polk County I Club.
- 31:55I saw him standing outside the door yesterday.
- 31:57That's right, yes, as he was in with Sean and Lucas next week,
- 32:01he said at the time that we talked to him going to have most
- 32:04of the major coaches. Coach McCollum wasn't going to
- 32:06make it. That has changed.
- 32:08I saw that or he told me that, yes.
- 32:09Coach McCollum is going to be there on Wednesday, so if you're
- 32:12making your way or you wanted to hear from McCollum, now you'll
- 32:15get the opportunity. Polk County I club.
- 32:17Just give it a Google search. You want to look for tickets,
- 32:19you can find them there. Her parents will be there.
- 32:22Lisa Bluter will be there. Jen Jensen, yes, Yeah.
- 32:25Gian Jensen, not Lisa Bloomer, yes.
- 32:27And of course, Ben McCollum now will be there also.
- 32:30So good news there. And I know the Polk County
- 32:32people are very excited about. It absolutely, unless you
- 32:34wouldn't and wanted to go listen to Josh Sash and people are
- 32:37going to be disappointed he's not going to be there, but you
- 32:39get the headed man. So let me follow up on, John
- 32:42said. When it comes to Koch and Sage
- 32:46buying stock in one of them for next year, which one?
- 32:50Stock for what? Just.
- 32:51To have a bigger impact on next year's team.
- 32:55Oh boy. That's, I think, incredibly
- 32:56difficult. I guess I would still lean Koch
- 32:58because you know he's still going to play a ton.
- 33:00I think Sage can play. A ton, I think he is too, but I
- 33:03think there's going to be more minutes for Koch and the back
- 33:06third of the year. Cooper shot the ball incredibly.
- 33:08He did. He was a lights out from behind
- 33:11the arc. Can he add another dimension to
- 33:13his game? Can he be a little bit more off
- 33:15the bounce then then strictly that corner 33 point shooter?
- 33:18Is there more to his game? The versatility of Sash of Sage
- 33:22is incredible. I mean, that guy, absolutely.
- 33:25What we saw from him on the defensive end and both of those
- 33:27guys go back to where they were at the beginning of the year and
- 33:30the kind of defense they were playing down the stretch.
- 33:32That gets you even more excited about them, what they can do on
- 33:35that end of the floor. Because I would guess back in
- 33:38September when camp started, they would not be considered
- 33:41plus defenders. Yeah, true.
- 33:43By the end of the year, at minimum, you have to be.
- 33:45They're pretty good, yeah. And maybe there's even more
- 33:48upside on the defensive end for both of.
- 33:49Them we will take your time out. John Walters joins us next talk
- 33:53Iowa State with the voice of Iowa State.
- 33:55We come back Miller and Condon. Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 33:58I'm Miller and Condon. Welcome back 12:45 Iowa Sports
- 34:01Radio Network. Let's get the voice of Iowa
- 34:04State. John Walters joins the program.
- 34:06John Trenton, Ken, thanks for finding a few minutes for us
- 34:08here today. John T JS contract has been made
- 34:12official. He's $6 million a year and
- 34:16rewarded handsomely and and understandably and justifiably
- 34:20so for his first few years at Iowa State.
- 34:23It's been terrific and good for good for Iowa State for stepping
- 34:27up as as he said, I can say stepping up.
- 34:29But thanks to the administration and obviously Jamie, Jamie
- 34:33Pollard and well done keeping TJ in the fold.
- 34:37Well, I couldn't agree more, can you?
- 34:38And I are old enough to remember the show, the $6 million man.
- 34:42So I guess the state has its $6 million, man, and, you know,
- 34:47worth every penny as far as I'm concerned because of what he
- 34:50brings to the university as in terms of prestige and the first
- 34:54class ways run it. And guys are really excelling as
- 35:00basketball players, but also as students and just doing really
- 35:03well across the board. And so it's a very, very healthy
- 35:06program. And that's what you hope for.
- 35:08You want your programs to be healthy, you know, and you want
- 35:11them to be productive. And man, coming off the 29 win
- 35:15season, obviously had overtures from some places and as he's
- 35:20continued to have throughout his time at Iowa State.
- 35:22But he's made it very clear that this is where he wants to be if
- 35:26he feels like he can succeed here.
- 35:28And I think they're putting some places, things in place for him
- 35:31to be able to really have the chance to succeed.
- 35:34And if you can succeed at the top of the Big 12, then you can
- 35:37succeed nationally. So this makes a lot of sense
- 35:40given the way the Big 12 is going in basketball.
- 35:43And I think if you're going to be competitive at the top of the
- 35:45league, you got to show you mean it.
- 35:48And I think that, you know, Doctor Cook and Jamie Pollard
- 35:51both showed that, showed that they mean it today.
- 35:54When the portal open and you saw they identified a group of guys,
- 35:59knew they had a lot of roster holes that they need to fill,
- 36:02and then they get all of them, the guys they brought on campus
- 36:04just right away, they all commit and boom, just done in a snap of
- 36:07a finger. We don't see that in college
- 36:09sports. We don't see that certainly in
- 36:11college basketball, how a plan comes together that quickly.
- 36:14How does TJ Otzelberger do that and what is he looking to
- 36:17identify because he's done such a great job in the portal?
- 36:21I think he's really good at just identifying players that are
- 36:23going to fit his scheme and play hard and buy into what he wants.
- 36:27And you know, he I don't think he's always going for the 25
- 36:33point a game score. I think he's working more.
- 36:36You know, you look at Taj Manning.
- 36:38I mean that's a guy that averaged 4 points and five
- 36:40rebounds a game of Kansas State. He's not always going for the
- 36:43leading scorer off each team. Now, did he get a score or two?
- 36:47Sure. I mean, obviously Prather is a
- 36:49is a very good scorer and Jake Juan Johnson scored well at
- 36:52Bradley and it is Jake Juan, by the way, I've heard.
- 36:56So I've been calling him Jaquan, but I'll ask him for sure when
- 37:01he gets here. But it is Jake Juan Johnson.
- 37:03But I mean, he got some scores, But you know, Leon Bond, known
- 37:06for his defense, you know, great defensive player in the Missouri
- 37:08Valley Conference, Jake Juan Bradley, known for his defense,
- 37:12Trey Singleton, just a young guy with a ton of potential.
- 37:15And I think he just sees these guys and kind of identifies him
- 37:19quickly and gets him in here. And I think, you know, nowadays,
- 37:23if a kids going to come on a visit, there's a pretty good
- 37:26chance that a conversation has happened between the coach or
- 37:30whatever, whoever's representing the universities or that that
- 37:34program and that player's agent. You know, that that conversation
- 37:38is probably taking place. And so when they come, it's
- 37:40probably just more of a formality of coming in, making
- 37:43sure the place is what they thought it was.
- 37:45But and then and then you see it happen very quickly.
- 37:48So I think T JS just really good at picking the right guys and
- 37:52guys that really love the idea of playing in his system and
- 37:55it's worked very well. I want to ask you about one of
- 37:57those guys, John and Killian Toure, who leaves home, I mean
- 38:00really left home to come over here and play basketball.
- 38:04How did you notice a difference in him?
- 38:06Obviously I would think more confident, more comfortable at
- 38:10the end of the year than I'm guessing he was when you first
- 38:13were introduced to. Toure is a hell of a player.
- 38:16I love watching him play defence as much as anybody on that team.
- 38:19He just gets after you. What kind of difference did you
- 38:22see in Tory from the time he got there to the time the season
- 38:25came to an end? Well, I think he, I think he has
- 38:28a. Lot of confidence in himself.
- 38:30And I mean, I think the year at Brewster Academy really had to
- 38:32help with that. He played, yeah, he played with
- 38:34some great players there. And he came in and he did open
- 38:36everybody's eyes. I mean, I don't even know if TJ
- 38:38knew that he was as good as this.
- 38:40And so when he came in and, and you saw how elite he was
- 38:44defensively, you thought, OK, this guy's going to be playing
- 38:46in some way, shape or form. But then when you saw, hey, he
- 38:49can do a lot of different things.
- 38:51You know, I think out in Vegas he really opened a lot of eyes
- 38:54with the way he played. You know, especially after
- 38:57Tainment went out. He was great against St.
- 38:59John's. He was really good against
- 39:01Creighton the next day. He was really good against
- 39:04Syracuse the next day. And then he did go through a
- 39:06little bit of maybe, I don't want to call it the freshman
- 39:08slump, but I mean, he just went through a period where he really
- 39:11struggled offensively, but the defense was consistent.
- 39:14But he worked his way out of it. And that's what was so great
- 39:16about it was at the end of the year when it mattered most.
- 39:18And those games were the biggest games of the year.
- 39:20He played lights out on both ends of the floor.
- 39:22So I think that will give him a tremendous shot in the arm going
- 39:26into the offseason that, hey, he can be a lead guard, he can be
- 39:29the guy. And you know, I just expect him
- 39:32to really take off and have a great sophomore season.
- 39:35Had to be a spring football unlike any other that you've
- 39:38ever gone through in your career, John.
- 39:40This roster almost completely turned over.
- 39:43Not only getting to know the coaches that you've gone through
- 39:45before, but so many new players that are coming in.
- 39:48What was it like going through it?
- 39:50How much practice did he get the chance to see?
- 39:52And just learning all these new players for this year's football
- 39:54team. Yeah, I think I saw probably
- 39:57about 6, maybe 7 practices in all, including the the spring
- 40:00showcase the other day and. You know, just really impressed
- 40:04with the physicality of the way they go about things.
- 40:07I think there's a lot of guys that feel like, hey, I've got a
- 40:10chance. I have a clean slate here, a
- 40:12blank canvas. Let me go prove myself.
- 40:14I think this coaching staff, to their credit, really did a great
- 40:17job of giving those players the chance to prove themselves.
- 40:20They didn't come in with any predetermined guys.
- 40:24You know, they really came in and said it literally is a wide
- 40:26open competition. And I was super impressed with
- 40:29the guys who returned to the program from Matt Campbell's
- 40:32team and just the opportunities they were given and how they
- 40:35took advantage of it. Guys like, you know, Aiden
- 40:37Floor, sure, I mean, I could go, I could go down the list,
- 40:41probably 8 or 9 guys that that stuck around, Damir Hawk, Jace
- 40:46Gilbert, you know, that that got maybe even a bigger opportunity
- 40:50in the spring than they had had in the past and really took
- 40:52advantage of it. And, you know, Coach Rogers said
- 40:56over and over again that he thought those guys were very
- 40:58well coached. And that's really great to hear.
- 41:00You know, just so often when there's a coaching change, it's
- 41:04I got to fix everything. You know, everything was broken.
- 41:06Not like that at all in this case.
- 41:07He knows that Matt Campbell did a great job coaching those guys
- 41:10and he was inheriting some good players.
- 41:12So that part of it was refreshing.
- 41:14But I just felt like the whole competition was truly that.
- 41:18And I, I don't think anybody felt cheated in, in terms of
- 41:21getting an opportunity in the spring.
- 41:23And so, you know, I, I'm really impressed with this coaching
- 41:26staff and the way they conduct their business.
- 41:28And I think they're very straightforward with these guys.
- 41:30And I thought it was a really, really productive spring.
- 41:33What did you see leadership wise from the quarterback position
- 41:36when it comes to Rayner? Obviously you'd see him play
- 41:38twice. He played at Jack Trice and then
- 41:40on the road this past season. When you watch Rayner as far as
- 41:43leading this team, does he look like a a quarterback in that in
- 41:47that lead role, John? I think so.
- 41:49And you know, when I like when I went to the scrimmage the other
- 41:51day, I'm not expecting to draw a ton of conclusions about
- 41:55individual players or this or that.
- 41:57I'm just looking at do they break the huddle cleanly?
- 42:00Do they not commit a bunch of penalties?
- 42:02Do they not turn it over a million times?
- 42:04It just doesn't look clean, you know, and organized and and I
- 42:07felt like it really did. And the sure, there were a
- 42:10couple mistakes, but you know, Jalen when he was out there, he
- 42:13really does have command of the team.
- 42:14You can see that. But I think all the quarterbacks
- 42:17have really come on same floors is playing very, very well.
- 42:21And they said Conor Moberly closed the gap tremendously
- 42:25between he and the other two. So I feel like they feel really
- 42:29confident. And Tyler Roll told us that he
- 42:31he would in the blink of an eye put any of those three guys out
- 42:34there and feel good about it. And so that's a really good
- 42:36place to be. And so love what Rayner does.
- 42:40I mean, just the fact that he came in and learned everybody's
- 42:43names instantly. I know that's been talked about
- 42:45a ton, but that is a pretty impressive deal.
- 42:46Difficult. I'm still trying to, I'm the
- 42:48announcer. I'm still trying to learn
- 42:50everybody's names, OK. And, and he was able to do it
- 42:52instantly, you know, so, you know, hats off.
- 42:55And he's a very outgoing, positive guy.
- 42:58And I think that just rubs off on other people and in a very
- 43:02good way. And, you know, Keith Eckendorf
- 43:03was his offensive coordinator at Arkansas State.
- 43:06He's his quarterbacks coach here.
- 43:07So he knew what he was getting. And he feels really good about
- 43:10him, too. Must feel pretty good.
- 43:12One of the few returners, Kyle Conradi in seeing some of the
- 43:15highlights of him just booming him as they were getting warmed
- 43:18up on Saturday. That big leg might come in
- 43:20pretty handy coming up this year.
- 43:22Let's hope for a healthy Kyle Conradi year.
- 43:24Oh, man, he is crushing the ball.
- 43:27I mean, it is crazy. I I went to a few of the
- 43:30practices at the indoor facility and, you know, they've got the
- 43:32net up there and I mean, he's hitting 65 yarders 3/4 of the
- 43:37way up the net, You know, I mean, it's like that thing had
- 43:4010 more yards to spare, you know, I mean, it's just, it's
- 43:43nuts. The ball just sounds different
- 43:46coming off his foot than it does anybody else.
- 43:49And yeah, I think he's got a chance to be an NFL kicker.
- 43:52I really do. But he's he's only gotten better
- 43:56and better and that leg has gotten stronger and stronger.
- 43:58And he's just such a confident guy that I expect him to have a
- 44:01great year. And it is huge, especially when
- 44:03you consider you go back and look at Washington State season
- 44:06last year, how many close games were they in?
- 44:08And Iowa State traditionally, I mean, in Big 12 conference play,
- 44:12how many close games are they in?
- 44:14Well, when you have a kicker you can depend on and you're going
- 44:17to maybe play six or seven games that are decided by 5 points or
- 44:21less, that's a pretty big deal. Indeed it is.
- 44:24I'm really excited about Kyle. John, we're out of time my
- 44:27friend. Good to talk to you.
- 44:28Enjoy the summer. We will impose on you a couple
- 44:30of times during that time frame. Thanks for jumping on John.
- 44:33Well, just appreciate it all. Right, Anytime guys.
- 44:35Thanks. Good to talk to you.
