- 0:50podcasters. You're going to hear a few ads
- 0:52throughout the throughout the podcast as a nod to them.
- 0:57And yeah, you know, there's technical stuff.
- 1:01That goes into all these Productions.
- 1:02Of course, you're probably listening to this on YouTube and
- 1:05apple Google podcast wherever else.
- 1:06I know a lot of my listeners are catching their podcasts on
- 1:10Apple, but I'm everywhere guys. It's crazy, Pandora, I think I
- 1:14Heart Radio Amazon. And of course YouTube, which
- 1:19pretty cool thing is, if you have the YouTube music thing
- 1:24going on, you know, you can like watch videos, but you can also
- 1:27listen to music. Podcasts are now featured on
- 1:29YouTube music. So there's just, you know,
- 1:32they've always been on YouTube or they've been on YouTube now
- 1:34for a while and video format. But if you're just wanting to
- 1:37listen in the background and YouTube is your thing, you can
- 1:40find me there on YouTube as well.
- 1:42So all over the place. And I want you guys to enjoy
- 1:48this week's episode with a bit more of a laid-back sort of
- 1:53attitude. I'm going to be a bit more laid
- 1:55back this week on this episode because we're not really going
- 1:59to be discussing much of anything.
- 2:02It's story time. It's story time here on the
- 2:05podcast. Okay?
- 2:08And I wanted to just, you know, Kind of lighten things up a
- 2:13little bit. I get a lot of posts or comments
- 2:18on stuff that I post and you know, some eat, some of these
- 2:23people that take time out of their day.
- 2:25I don't it's just trolling or whatever but it takes its takes
- 2:28its mental toll on me to, you know, engage with them.
- 2:32And as I know that's a choice and I don't always have to, but
- 2:35sometimes it's hard to resist and I figured, you know, I need
- 2:39a break. I need a break from that, and I
- 2:42just wanted to do something a little, kind of little fun.
- 2:45One and read one of the one of the one of the poems in the
- 2:50poetic Edda, I'm going to be reading from the Jackson
- 2:55Crawford translation of the poetic Edda.
- 2:58I have another translation, it's a more recent publication.
- 3:02It's like a study poetic Edda so there's like a lot of academic
- 3:09footnotes and stuff. So it's a little bit more
- 3:13tedious to read through. Having, you know, some of the
- 3:17some of the things annotated for study purposes but this is just
- 3:20going to be a straight reading of a poem in the poetic Edda
- 3:24called Green, the small. I love this one but this is
- 3:30actually one of the poems that is found in the original codex.
- 3:39Regis manuscripts as well as the am 748.
- 3:45I 4000 manuscript. So it's a, it is an early poem
- 3:49and it's basically a story sort of told any pros fashion is it
- 4:03where there's pros Prelude and and stuff and if that that's all
- 4:07part of the original, Poem. Okay, but it's essentially what
- 4:13it is. Is Odin is disguising himself as
- 4:16a cloaked individual. His name, of course, in the poem
- 4:21is green mere. So Grim too small.
- 4:24Is the words of Odin and disguise.
- 4:27It's green too. Small is the name of the poem
- 4:30and so Grimmie small like have them all who words of the high
- 4:33one. These are words of green beer.
- 4:37All right. And so anyway, oh, it is
- 4:39disguised under the name of Shadow face or grineer which
- 4:43means Old Norse means like Shadow or cloaked rather.
- 4:49And he's held captive in a court of a king who he once favored.
- 4:55And he delivers Mystic or Mythic lure to the King's son and so
- 5:04the preludes we're just going to you know jump right into this.
- 5:08And this is what's this is what is going to be this week's
- 5:11podcast. We're not going to be talking
- 5:13too much about anything. I would just like for you guys
- 5:15to enjoy. Mmm, however, long it's going to
- 5:19be it's a not a very long poem but I'm sure about for the next
- 5:2520 or 30 minutes or so. You'll be listening to me,
- 5:29recite the poem grieving too small, so I hope you all enjoy.
- 5:33Don't forget to like this podcast, share it around voted.
- 5:38Whatever the thing, does elicit for you to do.
- 5:41Please feel free to do so. So we're going to start with the
- 5:44Prelude and just run on through it.
- 5:46So once again this is from the Jackson Crawford translation of
- 5:51the poetic Edda and this is the poem green.
- 5:53The small King crowd who had two sons.
- 5:59One was named a guitar and the other gate with ignore was 10
- 6:04years old and Gareth was eight, the two of them rode out in a
- 6:09boat with their fishing tackle, and hoped to catch some small
- 6:13fish, but the wind drove them far out into the sea.
- 6:18In the dark night, they wrecked and went up onto the land where
- 6:22they met a poor farmer and they stayed there with him over the
- 6:26winter. The farmers old wife fostered I
- 6:30ignore but the farmer Foster Gareth and tutored him early in
- 6:35the spring, the man gave them a boat and when he and his wife,
- 6:38followed them down to the shore. The man spoke to Gareth in
- 6:42secrecy the boys departed in the wind was favorable.
- 6:47When they came to their fathers Harbor and then heareth who
- 6:51stood foremost in the boat, sprang up on land and shoved,
- 6:54the boat back out to sea and said, go wherever the trolls
- 6:58take you. The boat drifted far out to sea
- 7:02with agner but Gareth went Inland to his father's Hall.
- 7:07He was received well, but he learned that his father had
- 7:10died. So Gareth was taken as king, and
- 7:14he became a famous man, Odin and frigg sat in Cliff's Golf and
- 7:22looked out over all the worlds. Odin said look how your Foster
- 7:27son agner sits and fathers children.
- 7:30Trolls women in a cave. While my foster son Gareth is
- 7:35King and rules the land. Frigg said, but Gareth is so
- 7:41stingy with food that he starves his guests.
- 7:44If he thinks there are too many Oden said that this was a
- 7:49tremendous lie and so he and frigg made a wager about it.
- 7:53Then frigg sent her servant Fula to Gareth and had Fuller warned
- 7:59him that a sorcerer had come to the land but that this sorcerer
- 8:03would be recognized by the face that even the fiercest dog would
- 8:08not attack them. It was in fact, an idle rumor
- 8:12that Gareth was miserly with his food miserly with his food, all
- 8:19the same, he ordered any man who would not be attacked by any dog
- 8:23to be apprehended. Odin came wearing a blue Cape
- 8:28called himself Shadow faced or shadowed face but said nothing
- 8:33more of himself. Even when asked so the king had
- 8:36him tortured in an effort to extract more information from
- 8:39him. And had him placed between two
- 8:42burning fires where he sat for eight nights.
- 8:47Can Gareth had a ten-year-old son named agner.
- 8:50After the king's brother agner went to this shadowed face and
- 8:55gave him a full horn to drink and said he thought.
- 8:58His father was behaving poorly to torture a man without cause
- 9:04shadowed face drank and by then the fire had grown.
- 9:07So large, it had begun to burn his cloak.
- 9:11Then Shadow face said, you're hot fire and much too big.
- 9:17Get away from me Flames. My coat is getting burned.
- 9:21Even though I'm holding it up, my clothing is on fire.
- 9:25I've sat between the fires here for eight nights and no one
- 9:28offered or gave me food except agner alone.
- 9:32Now, I ignore will be the sole ruler of the land of the Goths.
- 9:38Hey lackner, it's the chief of the Gods, whose wishing you?
- 9:42Well, you will never be repaid. So, well for one drink, no

- 22:20All father wore father, rope Rider and hanged God.
- 22:28I have never been known by just one name since I first walked.
- 22:34They called me shadowed face here at gate Earth's place but
- 22:39gilding and Osmonds they called me driver when I pulled the
- 22:44sleds and mighty at the assembly among the gods, I'm called.
- 22:47Wish granter speaker just as high Shield Shaker wand Bearer
- 22:55graybeard. Wise and wisdom grantor where my
- 22:59name's at Seoul continues whole when I deceive the old Giants
- 23:04and I killed his famous son. I was his killer You are drunk,
- 23:11Gareth you have drunk too much, you have lost too much.
- 23:16When you have lost my favor, you've lost the favor of Odin
- 23:22and all the einherjar I've told you much and you'll remember
- 23:27little Your friends will deceive you.
- 23:31I see the sword of my friend dripping with blood.
- 23:37Now Odin will have a weapon weapons killed man.
- 23:42I know your life has ended your guardian Spirits are anxious.
- 23:47They see Odin here before you approach me if you can Odin is
- 23:53my name but before they called me Terror and thunder before
- 23:58that and Waker and killer and confuse ER an orator God heat
- 24:06maker, sleep maker, both gilding and father.
- 24:11I think all these names were used for me alone.
- 24:17King gay Ruth, sat with his sword on his knees halfway drawn
- 24:22when he understood that, this was Odin who had come to his
- 24:25Hall. He stood up and wanted to take
- 24:28Odin out of his Flames or out of the Flames.
- 24:32But the sword fell out of his hand and fell Hilt.
- 24:34First to the ground, the king, tripped and fell upon it, so
- 24:38that the sword pierced him through and he died, Then Odin
- 24:43left and agner was the king of that land for a long time
- 24:47afterward. Well, there you have it.
- 24:55There was the Fairly poor reading.
- 25:00I have to admit some of those names were just getting to me
- 25:03and I don't know, maybe the smoke in my eyes.
- 25:07I was just it was a bit of a challenge.
- 25:09You can tell I was struggling through it.
- 25:10So apologies for the for the less-than-stellar delivery of
- 25:14the poem groom too small. Yeah that was cool.
- 25:18You know like Again, didn't really want to just get too deep
- 25:23into discussions this week. I just, I needed that.
- 25:27Lighten it, I needed to lighten it up a bit, you know, and I
- 25:29hope you guys can appreciate that.
- 25:31But it's kind of cool because, you know, A couple weeks ago or
- 25:38I don't know within the last month I think we had we had a
- 25:42couple of guys we had Roger and Robert on from the runestone
- 25:47heathens of Ohio, Southwest Ohio.
- 25:51I think talking about some stanzas from voluspa and there
- 25:57was mention of some stanzas in, you know, grivna small.
- 26:01And of course this is an English translation that Jackson
- 26:05Crawford offers, and Some of those names I was tripping over
- 26:11and mispronouncing them. I'm sure horribly.
- 26:13So apologies for those of you that are catching this and going
- 26:17what you said it wrong, it should have been this.
- 26:19It should have been that fully admit that it was a, not the
- 26:22greatest reading of it so I'll do better for next time if we do
- 26:26another one of these, but it's cool because like I said, we
- 26:28were talking about some of the names of the halls of the Gods
- 26:33and then bring the small is where we hear the various names
- 26:36mentioned, you know, for air has one Freya has 14 has of Rome.
- 26:42Braga has a room Boulder. Has a home Heimdall has a home
- 26:46of course right? Like all these various halls or
- 26:49Realms in Asgard that they have their own separate, domains.
- 26:56Just like we do, just like we have all our own separate homes
- 26:59or domains, you know. So it's kind of cool to remember
- 27:03that episode and come back and reread it again.
- 27:06So if you guys are wondering, That was really small.
- 27:09You want to reread it yourselves or pull out your own copy or
- 27:13sure. There's I'm sure there's a, you
- 27:17know, copies available online as well so you can probably find
- 27:21that on a number of websites but yeah it's called Green the small
- 27:26And yeah, so before I go real quick just want to do a quick
- 27:31shower, I posted or mentioned last episode.
- 27:36There's a volunteer-based organization, it's called sacred
- 27:42Trail Society, sacred Trail society, and it's in, it's an

- 28:25tranquility and the And the beauty of nature, where it has
- 28:29been, unfortunately. Taking advantage of and trash
- 28:35has been left there. So you guys have probably seen
- 28:39posts. Hopefully, at this point now, on
- 28:42my channel on midgard, musings on the page there.
- 28:44But there's also a Facebook page, there is an Instagram
- 28:47account and then there's the website.

- 29:10think stickers patches maybe some shirts.
- 29:14There's like, tote bags I think that are going to be if they're
- 29:17not already being made as well. But it's for a good cause you
- 29:24know. So if you guys want to get a
