Transcript
- 0:00Welcome back to another episode of Amigos Afraid.
- 0:02This week we're back in Mexico and I'll be talking about La
- 0:06Bruja de Monterrey, a witch that terrorized the city for years.
- 0:10And we're also chasing the Headless Horseman from ancient
- 0:13folklore and the infamous Legend of Sleepy Hollow.
- 0:17So grab your flashlight and saddle up, because apparently
- 0:22losing your head doesn't mean you have to stop haunting
- 0:26people. Do you feel it?
- 1:08You feel the energy shift. I cleansed the room today at the
- 1:14request of one of my coworkers who I told her what we were up
- 1:17to last week. Is that what that smell is?
- 1:19Yes, it was Palo Santo. I was giving more like black
- 1:23ice. Oh no, no, I'm not a fuck boy.
- 1:27Yeah, it smells like black ice and cherry.
- 1:30No, no, no, That's my car. But specifically like the little
- 1:34circle. Oh my God.
- 1:36With aluminum full lid. Speaking of stomach hurting,
- 1:39those make my stomach hurt just by smelling them.
- 1:41Damn I I used to go hard for those, not going to lie.
- 1:44The ones that sit in your cup holder, no.
- 1:46I can't like it's like super satisfying like was like.
- 1:51Just like you can get that satisfaction now out of eating
- 1:54your what is it, your sardines? Which I have some sitting there
- 1:58and the shelf and I haven't ate them.
- 1:59Sardine scented air freshener right in your cabinet.
- 2:02I will bring it next time. Next time you give me a ride.
- 2:05Hello everyone, welcome back to Amigos.
- 2:07Afraid. Happy.
- 2:08Thursday. Guys, we've been really actively
- 2:10posting on TikTok and every once in a while something will take
- 2:14off. But in the last week we've had a
- 2:16lot of people like saving some of the episode trailers.
- 2:21So if you're new here, we would like to introduce ourselves.
- 2:23This might be your first time at the weekly A A meeting.
- 2:26Welcome to the weekly A a meeting.
- 2:27I'm Brian. No, Jerry, you have to tell
- 2:29them. Like honestly.
- 2:30OK, OK. I'm Jerry and he's Brian.
- 2:34That was a weird to hear you say, but yes, that's Jerry.
- 2:38I am Brian and this is Amigos Afraid, a weekly podcast where
- 2:41every Thursday we hang out, we chit chat and we talk about what
- 2:45haunted us this week. That's a lot of things.
- 2:48We always start the episode with the little cheeseman session, De
- 2:51stressing whatever happened in the last week that's exciting.
- 2:54We want to tell you guys. We hope that when you're
- 2:58listening to us, you kind of get to feel like you're part of the
- 3:01room, get to vent, get to just kick your feet up, get a blanket
- 3:05and just hang. Excuse me, out with us.
- 3:07When you're driving down the freeway, you kick your feet up,
- 3:10you really just lean back in your chair.
- 3:13Grab a blanket, some coffee. And if you have something to to
- 3:17tell us, just like, say it out loud.
- 3:19Yeah, possible. No one's going to know.
- 3:20Yeah, your windows are tinted. Exactly, I hope mine aren't
- 3:24super hot. People see me pick my nose and
- 3:26just sing at the top of my lungs.
- 3:27That's crazy, Brian. You're how old?
- 3:30I'm raw dog and life man good as you should with my untinted
- 3:35windows. That's that's pretty wild, but
- 3:37you have some bomb AC, so there's that.
- 3:40We're so happy that you're here today.
- 3:41Thank you for being you're with us and enjoying this beautiful
- 3:44Thursday. Yeah, introduce yourself.
- 3:46Put your name in the comments or something.
- 3:49What's your name? Wow, that's a beautiful name.
- 3:52I've never seen it spelled like that.
- 3:54Whoa, that's so cool. In the, is that an an
- 3:56apostrophe? Yeah.
- 3:58Is that three ES right next to each other?
- 4:00I've never seen Ashley felt like that.
- 4:04That's so cool. It's like a gamertag almost.
- 4:06Oh my God. Yeah.
- 4:06OK, Freaky Gamer 234. It's a beautiful name.
- 4:12Oh, Brian, what have you been up to?
- 4:14A whole lot of nothing. I've been so lazy the last like
- 4:192 weeks. I just, I just want to chill.
- 4:23I went to a party on Saturday. You were there.
- 4:25I was there. I don't remember.
- 4:27It was just kidding. Liz's pre birthday bash in
- 4:31conjunction with a bunch of her dog.
- 4:36Yeah, when I tell you that this little dog is a baby cow, it was
- 4:39just an old man. Define what you mean by baby
- 4:41cow. It's.
- 4:42A little baby cat with a pattern.
- 4:43It's like the black and white pattern, but he's just so sweet
- 4:46and just wants to be carried all the time.
- 4:47It's the best. I'm like what?
- 4:49Characteristics are giving cow He's so tiny he has no teeth.
- 4:53He is a baby cow. Oh, you know what it is?
- 4:56It's the tongue. It's the tongue he does have,
- 4:58like cow. Tongue where?
- 4:59Yeah, it just. Yeah, it just falls out.
- 5:01Yeah, yeah, yeah. And then his color pattern.
- 5:03Yeah, yeah. That's I got some good pictures
- 5:06with him and my poncho T-shirt that I made.
- 5:08Oh my God, tell him what you did.
- 5:10So shout out to Matt for printing some prints.
- 5:14Transferable prints to iron on to my shirt.
- 5:17So I put a little small, like 5 by 4 logo.
- 5:21I don't know, I cut it out and put it in like my front chest.
- 5:24Pocket area? Yeah.
- 5:25Like what? Traditional.
- 5:26Merchants are and then in the back I had a blown up picture
- 5:30like 12 by something picture of him huge and he just looks all
- 5:33like. Not to say Jerry has a big back,
- 5:36but it was big. I just called, called.
- 5:38I just got called the big back. No, no, I'm just saying it was a
- 5:41big picture on your back. Gotcha, gotcha, gotcha.
- 5:43And then together, it's a big. Picture on your back.
- 5:45Yeah, huge picture on my big back.
- 5:47You said it. I gotcha.
- 5:50And yeah, it was super cute and it transferred super cool and it
- 5:53was really good. So it was a hit.
- 5:54You walked in and people were so shocked.
- 5:57I commit. I did mention that I wanted to
- 5:59do something like that, so I committed because that's my boy
- 6:02Pancho. Love you dude.
- 6:04I love when my friends are just so committed to a bit.
- 6:06Jerry, I appreciate you. Thank you, I was there, it was
- 6:13super fun. Happy early birthday to Liz.
- 6:16I love you, Liz. Love you Pancho.
- 6:18Yeah, and I mean what? I was just talking to you about
- 6:21this. I went to another concert on
- 6:24Sunday, which was super cool. Went to a metal concert with
- 6:28Matt Frenchy and their friend Greg and it was super fun.
- 6:33Shout out to them. I had a great time, ran around
- 6:36the mosh pit for a bit, just for a bit.
- 6:38Is that why you're so bruised up?
- 6:40No, no, no, where, where else am I bruised up as this kid?
- 6:43Oh, I was like what the fuck? Was like that was so that's
- 6:46CERN. Remember that bruises you don't
- 6:49remember having I'll I'll touch on that later.
- 6:52Okay, very vital part to my story today, actually
- 6:55interesting, but oh, OK, you were you were throwing hands,
- 6:58throwing fists, throwing ass. Not, not ass.
- 7:02You don't do it in the mosh. Not in the mosh, but I mean
- 7:04maybe in some. If I was in the mosh.
- 7:06You can throwing ass. I would love to see that, Brian.
- 7:09Actually, can you explain what a mosh is to me because I think
- 7:12I'm lost. It's just a a pit, a a man made
- 7:15pit in a crowd of people and people are just throwing it
- 7:19down. OK, what does that mean?
- 7:21Because I think it's throwing at.
- 7:24Like pushing, punching, kicking, genuinely jumping deliberately.
- 7:30Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like you're moshing.
- 7:33I thought it was just like really aggressive, like dancing
- 7:36where you kind of shoving each other, not like.
- 7:38The majority of people are shoving each other like that.
- 7:40I think that's the point of it, because you're just so hyped and
- 7:42the music is going so crazy and stuff.
- 7:44But there's some people that be throwing elbows and kicks and
- 7:47doing some wacky dances that are like very violent.
- 7:53OK, I don't want to be in the match pit.
- 7:55I've changed my mind. But you can be the one to change
- 7:57it and throw ass. Be the one.
- 7:59You could be the one. No, because I don't want to get
- 8:01a fist anywhere near my ass. Respectfully.
- 8:04Respectfully, OK, I I some. People might enjoy that.
- 8:06Yeah, you're right. Yeah, I get you, because it was
- 8:08super fun, had a great time. I saw that once again.
- 8:12But you have just been to a concert, dude.
- 8:13You have been. That's 2.
- 8:15Weeks in a row. That you've been a little
- 8:17concert boy, a concert goer. Yep, Yep, Yep.
- 8:20It was so funny because I didn't mention it today and the person
- 8:23who I was talking to was like, oh, did you go to the Carol G
- 8:25concert? I'm like, no, but I I did see
- 8:29that that was happening too. Oh.
- 8:31That would have been. So good.
- 8:32Yeah, yeah, there. You could have thrown ass for
- 8:34sure. Oh.
- 8:35Absolutely, I would have been in my seat last row closest to God
- 8:38throwing ass. So the heavens can all see you.
- 8:42Yeah, that's awesome. And then wow, I'm, I'm jealous.
- 8:47I wish I was going to concerts. You should go I'll.
- 8:52Consider. It because that's the thing.
- 8:55Would you go? Not to, not to the concerts
- 8:58you're going. Oh, OK.
- 8:59I wouldn't. I would have gone to Motionless
- 9:01and Light. I know I would have known maybe
- 9:033 songs on that set list. I would have had a good time
- 9:06when the screaming started. I would have gone to go get a
- 9:09drink. So you would have been gone 90%
- 9:12of the show. Oh yeah?
- 9:13Well, I don't know their whole. The majority of it, yeah, Yeah.
- 9:16Oh, but you would have had a great time at the bar.
- 9:19I would have gone ham when they started singing sunglasses at
- 9:22night, did they? They did.
- 9:23Love that for you. They did.
- 9:25It was pretty awesome. That's beautiful.
- 9:28I'm glad you had a great weekend.
- 9:29Thank you, friend. That's kind of it.
- 9:31I mean, oh, I dyed my hair. Oh again, he did walk in looking
- 9:35a little extra Mexican. I did.
- 9:36I did. I'm back to brown, like dark
- 9:38brown. Like I'm not blonde anymore, so
- 9:41no more blonde. Yeah, it was.
- 9:43It was giving surfers collect the frosted tips were starting
- 9:45to like show more. That's so 90s and Y2K.
- 9:48It's like on trend. I'm good, all blonde, cool the
- 9:53frosted tips and stuff. I wasn't a fan.
- 9:55If only we had given him a Bali osh or something like let it
- 9:58grow out more naturally. Like with my mullet, we're just
- 10:00like. More full.
- 10:02Yeah, sure. But we got rid of the mullet, so
- 10:04I did. Hey, Jerry's having a
- 10:05transformation, but we support it.
- 10:07Thank you. Yeah, that means a lot.
- 10:10You'd need Erica. I'm wearing a hat, I got one
- 10:15like 2 weeks ago. That damn dude, it's time.
- 10:19It's time. OK.
- 10:22I'm just kidding. I'm just kidding.
- 10:24I'm just kidding. No, no, no, no, no.
- 10:30Please. It is.
- 10:31I'll buy you McDonald's. I'll buy you McDonald's.
- 10:32Don't cry. Don't cry.
- 10:33Don't cry. That was that's a core memory
- 10:35for me buying McDonald's. But just telling my brother not
- 10:38not to cry and I'll buy him something.
- 10:40Yeah. No, no, no.
- 10:41Like I'll go buy a toy. What a Dick.
- 10:45That's funny. Well then I have to ask your
- 10:48friend what haunted you this week?
- 10:50I'm so glad you asked because this week I was haunted.
- 10:54Was it not having a haircut? No.
- 10:57Oh. Although I would love to see
- 10:59Christian again. Shout out, Christian.
- 11:01This week I've been haunted by how badly I speak Spanish these
- 11:06days. Nice.
- 11:08Which? And English, which frustrates me
- 11:14because I'll be with family at parties, OK, and I can hold a
- 11:18conversation just fine. I know my basic Spanish, I can
- 11:22talk to people, I can translate basic sentences.
- 11:25I can do it for my dad all the time.
- 11:26I can confirm. Thank you.
- 11:28But sometimes they will be Yip, yapping, having a good time,
- 11:33kikiing OK, and a joke will come into my head and then I don't
- 11:40have the words for it in Spanish OK.
- 11:45And it pains me. It literally pains me because I
- 11:47know it would be so funny but I don't have the vocab.
- 11:51Gotcha, I've been there. I genuinely think that is my
- 11:54biggest character flaw, my inability to tell a really good
- 11:57joke in Spanish. On top of the obvious one.
- 12:00The haircut. Yeah.
- 12:04Thin ice, Jerry. Real thin ice.
- 12:07I remember whose house you're in.
- 12:10So this week I started my rewatch of Rebelle to try and
- 12:15expand my Spanish vocabulary. That's literally why I'm
- 12:18watching. I'm grabbing the temples of my
- 12:20head because I sat down in his couch as soon as I walked in and
- 12:24he's like, how? What do I put?
- 12:25I know what to put. Like immediately after he
- 12:27mentioned he said that first and then he put on.
- 12:30Rebelle starts playing Episode 12.
- 12:33So maybe in a few weeks I'll have a new like Fresa accent.
- 12:36What's that Good? No, Jerry, not the so Porto.
- 12:42That's what I've learned this week.
- 12:45These are show lines like. I can see these being said.
- 12:49In the show, I don't really know what it means, especially the
- 12:51NOLA. So Porto, like, always say that
- 12:53when they're so pissed. Yeah, especially at Roberta, My
- 12:56favorite. Like I can't stand her.
- 12:58Yeah, but support that in my head means like support.
- 13:01So I could have the bad translation.
- 13:02Gotcha. It just in my head, OK,
- 13:05everything ties in Jerry, all of it.
- 13:08So this novella is like a 2004 time capsule, OK?
- 13:13I watched it when it aired. I was like 8 or 9.
- 13:15And I remember one time there was a scene where the main girls
- 13:19were in bikinis and my babysitter saw me watching.
- 13:22And she's like, no, yeah, no. So no.
- 13:24Buzz me that I was 9. Yeah, yeah, yeah, for sure.
- 13:27A valid She's just like this is not appropriate for children.
- 13:30Little did she know, I had no interest in the women, did not
- 13:33even acknowledge the fact that they were in bikinis because I
- 13:35was focused on the shirtless men.
- 13:37Gotcha, gotcha. I really did not watch for a
- 13:40good like 3 months because she wouldn't let me put it on and it
- 13:43would come on at like 4 or five in the afternoon.
- 13:45When you were home after school. I know, and I'm waiting for my
- 13:48mom to pick me up. Yeah, never got home early
- 13:50enough to watch it over today. Wow.
- 13:53Anyways, in the first episode we meet Miguel, my favorite.
- 13:59He's so handsome. The actor too.
- 14:01He's aged well, not anymore. He was aging like fine wine.
- 14:04Saw him recently, looks like an old man.
- 14:07His whole back story is that he's from Monterrey and his dad
- 14:10was killed or something. I don't know yet.
- 14:13I don't remember any of the plot lines.
- 14:15Tragic. And for some reason Monterrey
- 14:18like pinged in my brain. I was like, why do I know that
- 14:21city? What happened there?
- 14:24And boom, it came to me. Have you ever heard of La Bruja
- 14:28de Monterrey? No, but I've heard of La Monca
- 14:34the. No similar vein, different, not
- 14:40related, but actually no one's really fun.
- 14:41The other one's really scary. Oh, OK, I'll let you you can say
- 14:45which one is which at the end of this.
- 14:47OK, I'm down. So this week officially, I'm
- 14:50haunted by La Bruja de Monterrey, a witch who
- 14:53terrorized the city for over 2 years.
- 14:56La Bruja de Monterrey, which translates to the Witch of
- 14:59Monterrey which is the city of Mexico, is believed to be an
- 15:03evil woman flying around the city at night.
- 15:06From 2004 to 2006, there have been multiple sightings and
- 15:10alleged run insurance with the witch.
- 15:12The sightings range from local eyewitness accounts to
- 15:15professional paranormal investigators with video
- 15:18evidence. Whoa.
- 15:20You've never heard of her? No, I feel like I've seen a lot
- 15:24of video footage of witches and trees walking around in like a
- 15:29forest and people tracking them or like in a cemetery where
- 15:33they're like, Yep, those are witches and they're like
- 15:35following these like close figures but they never get close
- 15:37enough. You just see little glimpses of
- 15:39them. I'll show you the video because
- 15:41it is unfortunately nothing like that.
- 15:43But it was, from what I understand, a viral video
- 15:47before, like YouTube and stuff, OK.
- 15:50It was like on Premier Impacto it was.
- 15:52Big. This girl had news coverage
- 15:56every time she was seen. It was a huge deal, honestly.
- 16:00A local legend? An icon maybe?
- 16:03Let me paint the picture of what the Mexican beliefs of witches
- 16:05look like. According to author Marco
- 16:08Antonio Molina, Mexican witches have a broad range of abilities.
- 16:12They mostly appear at night in their original forms, as they
- 16:15can take on multiple types of disguises during the day.
- 16:18Typically they take on the form of a woman, though some even say
- 16:21that they can be seen as balls of light, like on the horizon.
- 16:26OK, I've I've heard of that. I've also heard like of like
- 16:28flaming balls like that, like you jump into that the sky like.
- 16:32In like far forest and stuff I've heard of that.
- 16:34That's exactly what he described.
- 16:35Amazing. What do you envision when you
- 16:38think of a bruja like? A cloaked figure.
- 16:42You can't tell if they're 80 or sickly looking like older for
- 16:48sure. So yeah, like into like the like
- 16:50a Crone. Oh, that's a good like that a
- 16:52Crone. That's what I am.
- 16:54Tabulary word. Thank you.
- 16:57Well. When they're in human form,
- 16:59they're able to take on husbands who don't know that they've
- 17:02married a witch. They live amongst locals and do
- 17:05a pretty good job of blending it.
- 17:07Molina continues, saying that witches feed off the blood of
- 17:09babies by sucking on their skin while the mother is distracted.
- 17:14If you ever find a sudden bruise on your body, it's because a
- 17:17witch snuck in and fed off of you.
- 17:20Wow, very like vampire like. I know I have never heard that.
- 17:23No puncture wounds, just they're sucking the blood through the
- 17:26skin. Wow.
- 17:29Precipitation. Awesome, we'll get the blood out
- 17:33of there somehow. If the mother is distracted too
- 17:36often, she risks the chance of a witch stealing their baby.
- 17:41Sounds like a lesson. Yeah, it's like giving old wives
- 17:44tale. Like just one of those dichos.
- 17:48Similarly, they feed off the blood of virgins.
- 17:51No wonder you're all bruised up. Sucking their blood allows the
- 17:55blue hat to remain youthful, body snatched.
- 17:58Then they use that body to lure in a man who will ultimately
- 18:01marry them and do their bidding. Like help find babies and women
- 18:05to feed off of. How dare you?
- 18:10Let's get into the first sighting.
- 18:12In 2004, a police officer was doing his nightly patrol when he
- 18:16swore a witch fell from a tree and attacked him.
- 18:20The nerve. The officer's name was Leonardo
- 18:23Samaniego. He was a member of the Guadalupe
- 18:26Municipal Police In 2024. He recounted his experience from
- 18:3120 years ago with the publication De La Diario, so
- 18:35this is directly from him. OK, cool.
- 18:38Sorry guys, if I'm butchering my Spanish it's because I'm only on
- 18:41episode 12 of Rebelle. He's almost there, guys.
- 18:43I have a lot to learn. This is like 404 episodes.
- 18:46This is Rebelle. Lingo.
- 18:48He claims that it started as a typical shift.
- 18:51It was January of 2004. For most of the night, he sat in
- 18:55his car and nothing super exciting had happened.
- 18:59However, everything changed. When the Fire Nation attacked.
- 19:03Guess at what time? 2:00 in the morning.
- 19:06Oh, you're so close. Is it 3?
- 19:08It's three, OK. Everything changed at 3:00 AM I.
- 19:11Forget when the witching hour is, it's from times of like 2 to
- 19:144. Whatever the range range.
- 19:16It's a broad range. They have a lot of time on their
- 19:19hands, apparently. He was in the middle of
- 19:21following a suspicious car that was the most exciting part of
- 19:24the night, he said. That car looks a little weird,
- 19:26let me follow it. When he saw something fall from
- 19:29a tree, at first he thought it was a black trash bag because it
- 19:34was kind of moving with the wind.
- 19:38It was like this. Do you ever feel like a black
- 19:43trash bag floating through the wind gonna attack a man?
- 19:49The bag stopped a few inches in the air before hitting the
- 19:51ground. I'm just floating there.
- 19:54I'm walking now, Brian. I'll talk to you later.
- 19:56That's when he realized he was looking at the back of a woman
- 19:59dressed in all black like you said.
- 20:02She turned midair before touching the ground to face him
- 20:06and started heading towards the car.
- 20:08OK, got the one 80s. As soon as he saw that her eyes
- 20:12were pitch black, he grabbed his radio and he said please said
- 20:15help someone, please, said the captain.
- 20:18Anyone. He did not like this lady's
- 20:20vibes. He was not impressed that she's
- 20:22able to just float. Yeah, yeah.
- 20:24I wouldn't be there. Well, he was right because the
- 20:27witch launched at him and tried to reach through the windshield.
- 20:32He reversed out of there just as the witch flew away.
- 20:36He said he saw her like horizontally flying like like
- 20:40Superman. Superman.
- 20:41Wow. Super Witch.
- 20:44So now, 20 years later, reflecting on the experience, he
- 20:47said that she had no wrinkles, looked to be somewhere in her
- 20:50late 40s and was wearing a black poncho with a hood.
- 20:55Stylish. He was so shocked by the alleged
- 20:58attack that when his supervisor showed up, he collapsed in his
- 21:01arms and started crying. He's so happy to see him.
- 21:04Oh. OK, I thought of like like fear.
- 21:06Well, yeah, he was so scared. He was happy.
- 21:07That he was like, relieved there.
- 21:08Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Within minutes of him saying he
- 21:11was attacked by Ibruja, the local news was there trying to
- 21:14get the inside scoop the same night.
- 21:17I wonder how they got news of it.
- 21:18How does the news get the news? I'm thinking maybe someone had
- 21:21like a transponder and was listening into like the radio
- 21:24calls because I know that's how at least like from the true
- 21:28crime podcast, I've listened to that.
- 21:30Any kind of media people, that's how they find out where the
- 21:33police are going and how they end up showing up the night.
- 21:35Of wow, because. They're like intercepting the
- 21:37radio waves for some reason, and they're like a body was found on
- 21:42this street. So Ivan, Ivan he's.
- 21:44Muscles out of water, the water, the sidewalk.
- 21:47Local man attacked by which? You can find videos online of
- 21:51his little interview that night. They interviewed him while he
- 21:54was getting checked out by paramedics.
- 21:56Like this was a huge ordeal. They did a whole flash like
- 22:00thing also in front of him to like make sure he was his pupils
- 22:02weren't dilated or anything, trying to make sure he wasn't
- 22:05under the influence of any kind of drugs or alcohol.
- 22:07OK, sober. Alert and responsive.
- 22:10Very. He swore it was a witch and in
- 22:12that interview he says he had black eyes and had dark skin to
- 22:17try to attack him. Honestly, the officer became a
- 22:20small time celebrity and was interviewed kind of periodically
- 22:23around Halloween time just for his expertise in dealing with
- 22:27the witch. In another interview I saw of
- 22:30him, the interviewer was asking him what does someone need to
- 22:33wear in order to look like a real witch and I think he said
- 22:37oh you have to have a black hood and a messy black wig.
- 22:42But I guess he became an expert. He ended up leaving the police
- 22:45force to become. A No.
- 22:47When they interviewed him that second time, he was still in a
- 22:49police uniform. Wow, he just had a a witch
- 22:51badge. Witch Hunter.
- 22:52Badge, I don't think he realized that his alleged experience
- 22:57would flow up to the extent that it did because it was like pop
- 23:02culture legend at the time. Yeah, Samaniego kind of gave us
- 23:06the groundwork. There's a scary lady defying
- 23:09physics somewhere out there in Monterrey.
- 23:11In 2004, the Internet was way different than what it is now.
- 23:15If you didn't catch the story during the nightly news, you
- 23:17would only hear about it second hand.
- 23:20And last week we talked about exaggeration, how people love to
- 23:24sprinkle in a little extra detail every time they retell
- 23:27something that was not there the first time.
- 23:30So all it took was a little bit of local gossip about Abruha in
- 23:33the neighborhood to keep the story alive.
- 23:36Soon other people were saying that they also witnessed strange
- 23:40things that night. Apparently there was a Lechusa
- 23:44sighting beautiful around the same time saying that the woman
- 23:47had bird like features and feathers.
- 23:49Jerry, remind us what a Lechusa is.
- 23:51A lechusa is a supposed which that takes the form of a large
- 23:56owl with the face of a woman or person.
- 24:02And we talked about that like 4 episodes ago, so go check it
- 24:05out. Go check out the La La Lechusa
- 24:06episode. Honestly had a blast.
- 24:08That was that was a good one that scared me.
- 24:11Thank you. You're welcome.
- 24:12And it's cryptic, forgot to mention that.
- 24:13Well. Two years later there is another
- 24:16sighting of La Bruja de Monterrey, and this time it was
- 24:19caught on film. Let's go.
- 24:23A paranormal group called the Agni Club was out in Monterrey
- 24:27in 2006 investigating UFOs. I love Albany, like I love that
- 24:31word. It's just so fun to say.
- 24:32I don't know what it means, I should have googled it.
- 24:34Albany like UFO Albany. That's what it means, yeah.
- 24:37You're so smart. Thank you friend.
- 24:40Viana Perla Chapa, the group's founder, and Ramon Villarreal, a
- 24:44group member, were in the Cumbres neighborhood when they
- 24:46noticed something large floating along the Monterrey mountain
- 24:49range. From a distance, they described
- 24:51the black figure flying just above the summit of El Cerro de
- 24:55Las Mitras. Luckily, they had their camera
- 24:58on them and they recorded what is believed to be the only video
- 25:01evidence of Abuja de Monterrey. Damn they caught her on 4K?
- 25:05No, they caught her in 240P. Oh, beautiful.
- 25:08Yeah, yeah, yeah, 2. 1006 remember.
- 25:10You're right, you're right. Allegedly, the witch has seen
- 25:12floating by at a steady pace, which the group said should be
- 25:15impossible due to the wind conditions that day.
- 25:19They claimed that not even a helicopter would be allowed to
- 25:21fly under those conditions. Damn.
- 25:23OK, wind experts, I you. Read my mind.
- 25:26I'm like, OK, you know about UFOs, I guess so maybe maybe
- 25:31they understand like flight patterns and stuff.
- 25:32Yeah, maybe there's validity to their claims.
- 25:35It's one of their classes that they took.
- 25:37The encounter lasted about 7 minutes before the flying object
- 25:40turned and disappeared behind the mountain.
- 25:43In more recent times, Yana has mentioned that some believe it's
- 25:45a drone, but in 2006 that was far from being technology that
- 25:49was readily available to people. Yeah, no other theories where
- 25:54it's some sort of US vehicle that was spying on the city of
- 25:58Monterrey. I don't know how to, I should
- 26:01have brought a picture, but there's this huge, just like
- 26:04mountain, imagine like the neighborhood and at the back
- 26:07huge mountain, giant peaks. So Deanna claims that it's a
- 26:11silhouette of a witch dressed in all black.
- 26:13And what's really interesting and kind of on the nose, the
- 26:16peaks that it was flying through is called Las Brujas.
- 26:21Spitting. And it was named that before
- 26:23they witnessed that. Maybe that's why they called
- 26:25them that. Real quickly, everyone
- 26:28remembered San Maniego's story from two years ago and made a
- 26:30connection. La Bruja de Monterrey was seed
- 26:34another two weeks of Halloween. Just kidding.
- 26:38Just kidding. Just kidding.
- 26:40This video ended up spreading like crazy.
- 26:43You remember premade Impacto, right?
- 26:44I do. I don't know if it's.
- 26:46Still airing? I don't know either.
- 26:49But they ran a story about it, connecting the dots, and it was
- 26:52breaking news that oh, which had been seen.
- 26:55Honestly, I love how dramatic Mexican media is.
- 26:58I agree, especially in the early 2000s because there was no
- 27:02filter for what was considered news.
- 27:04It could be like some sort of mass incident or something, all
- 27:08crazy traffic accident. And then it's like the local
- 27:11cheese man, like all these two neighbors are pissed at each
- 27:13other and they're being interviewed on TV.
- 27:16So let me describe the video before I show it to you.
- 27:18It's super grainy. It's a 2006 personal camera,
- 27:22like those little handheld camcorders.
- 27:24OK, to me, the flying object, it kind of looks red, but Deanna
- 27:31swears it's a witch wearing all black.
- 27:34The way it moves is kind of SUS because it is kind of just
- 27:37floating super steadily to me. Kind of looks like a balloon.
- 27:41OK. That black BLOB, doesn't it
- 27:47flash like kind of red to you? Oh well, you're.
- 27:51I'm sorry I honestly can't can't tell but it does like super
- 27:55grainy and blurry and choppy so. It's just it's giving BLOB.
- 27:59Yeah, it it, I, I can see that like it looks like a balloon
- 28:02floating like you just when you see a random balloon just
- 28:04floating through the air, like that's what it looks like same
- 28:06speed, very similar, like pattern.
- 28:09It's it's cool, though, I mean, because I just think about like
- 28:11the AI now and all the Photoshop that goes around now and like
- 28:14how real it looks and 2006 yes, I mean yes, it was around
- 28:20Photoshop was I'm sure around yeah, but not edit yeah, a
- 28:22video. Amateur video like that?
- 28:24No, you have to know tools, You have to be trained in order to
- 28:29make something like that. Yeah.
- 28:32Production. Yeah, it literally is a
- 28:34production to to edit video at home in 2006.
- 28:38Yeah, with your big old monitor and screen that looks like a
- 28:43refrigerator. I'm just kidding guys.
- 28:44Sorry, I'm not trying to offend anyone.
- 28:48I'm kind of torn. I think it moves like a balloon,
- 28:53but looking at the scale relative to the mountain, that
- 28:56would have to be a massive balloon.
- 28:58That's true. I don't know if maybe step
- 29:01perception like plays in on it too.
- 29:03Yeah, maybe it is kind of closer to them, but in the video it
- 29:06looks like it's right along the edge of the mountain.
- 29:08Yeah. Also though in the video I
- 29:10thought it was going to be a bigger mountain, like it looks
- 29:12more of like a hill like like a OH.
- 29:14But when you zoom out, like if you look at where they say it
- 29:16was, it's a huge. Mountain OK, OK, OK.
- 29:19Yeah, probably was zoomed in so I thought they were closer to
- 29:21the witch in the in the video. Some people think it's a UFO,
- 29:26like it's not a witch. Yeah, aliens.
- 29:28Yeah, obviously. Hello.
- 29:30Other explanation. I mean, at the end of the day,
- 29:32that's what the Opni club was looking for.
- 29:35Aliens allegedly call back. So I understand that maybe the
- 29:42witch angle instead of UFOs like helped push the narrative a
- 29:46little further. There was a really popular
- 29:48sighting 2 years back. Yeah.
- 29:51You're trying to put your little group on the map.
- 29:53I don't know how popular this group was in 2006, but because
- 29:57of that video, they were getting interviewed everywhere.
- 30:00Yeah, they started going to conferences.
- 30:02I feel like they were there one by chance because they weren't
- 30:05trying to find a witch, but everything aligned to make this
- 30:10possible. So that's the only reason why I
- 30:12would believe it. Especially for 2006, me hearing
- 30:15that story for the first time and seeing that kind of footage,
- 30:17that's not super like it's bad, but for that time, I'm sure it
- 30:20wasn't terrible. Yeah, it was comparable to
- 30:22anything else you're watching on TV.
- 30:24Right now, yeah. Super pic.
- 30:25No like. Back then, Back then, back then,
- 30:27yeah, yeah. Everything back then is super
- 30:29pixelated. I was telling Jerry how they
- 30:31look so real weird on an HDTV because it's all cropped and
- 30:35ugly. Yeah.
- 30:36So I would say like with all of those factors and taking into
- 30:39account that they weren't specifically they're looking for
- 30:41a witch and they caught that, it seems genuine.
- 30:45Yes, but on the other side, I still think it's a product of
- 30:47its time. You're seeing a blurry little
- 30:50BLOB. There is no way for you to
- 30:52clarify that your understanding and perception of TV has only
- 30:56ever looked that way because TV's are so low quality.
- 31:00Back then, you could be convinced that it was anything.
- 31:02Yeah. So two years ago, you have a
- 31:04story from a police officer who you, as maybe a regular citizen
- 31:10at the time, give them a lot of credit.
- 31:12Yeah, of course it was true. He he said it on his walkie.
- 31:17Look, he's in an ambulance because he's so frightened.
- 31:20It has to be true. So then two years later, this,
- 31:23this club is trying to, I don't know if they're trying to have
- 31:26their big break, but they're looking for evidence of anything
- 31:29to solidify their ideas, their claims.
- 31:32There's UFOs out there. There's witches out there.
- 31:35How convenient. That's just the skeptic part of
- 31:37my brain. But OK, so sorry, I want to, I
- 31:39want to go back because maybe I'm not remembering.
- 31:41So you had mentioned they recorded this.
- 31:43By chance, by chance, they were just standing in there.
- 31:45Were they claiming that this was the UFO or that this was?
- 31:49No, they made the connection that, oh, it must be the witch
- 31:51because two years ago there was a witch sighting.
- 31:53OK, yeah, I don't know, I feel like if it would make more sense
- 31:56to me if they were trying to prove that this was a UFO, then
- 31:59it's like a, oh, they're these guys are for sure just trying to
- 32:01like reel in a bite or something from anyone.
- 32:05But that's why I think it makes more sense for them to get
- 32:07attention when they realized, oh, there's a connection to a
- 32:09witch, because that was already on the news.
- 32:11That was already big. That's very big brain of you,
- 32:13Brian. Big brain it was.
- 32:15Like trends before trends existed.
- 32:17Because nowadays the trend will start one day, three days in.
- 32:20People are over it. Everyone has access to it,
- 32:23everyone can recreate it in the moment.
- 32:25That's true. I like that I.
- 32:28Don't know, I had my skeptic brain on for this one.
- 32:31Since then, Diana, the founder, has found new ways to analyse
- 32:35the video. It moves too steadily to be a
- 32:37bird or balloon, according to her.
- 32:40She also claims that now she sees that it's holding something
- 32:42like a lamb or a dog. How she sees that from like 5
- 32:46pixels? I have no.
- 32:47Idea. I don't know.
- 32:48Maybe it was a baby or a virgin and she took her dinner to go.
- 32:52We'll never talk, we'll never know.
- 32:56Is la bruja de Monterrey Rio? To some, yes.
- 32:59They've seen the video, they've heard the story.
- 33:01Not enough to convince them to even fewer.
- 33:05It's an absolute truth. San Diego saw her directly in
- 33:09front of him and his life was changed forever.
- 33:12Yana witnessed it at first hand also, and maybe owes a large
- 33:16portion of her career to that specific incident.
- 33:18I don't know. I have very limited research on
- 33:21this group on this lady. I will do a deep dive to see
- 33:24what else is Avni group has. I'd love to know.
- 33:28That's what haunted me this week.
- 33:33La monca de Durango. Just kidding.
- 33:35No disrespect bro. The Monterrey.
- 33:38Wow friend, that's awesome. Thank you for that.
- 33:40What's our bad friend? What haunted you this week?
- 33:42And. You want to know what haunted me
- 33:44this week? Yeah, that's why I asked.
- 33:46These damn mosquitoes. They got you.
- 33:50They've been getting me from, oh, they're.
- 33:51Going to get you dengue. I went no thanks, because I'll
- 33:55be I'm on it as soon as I see it.
- 33:57I'm not stopping until I see them Squitch.
- 33:59Dead. So yeah, I went to the, I was
- 34:02watching clothes and we have like a laundromat near us.
- 34:06And as soon as I look down, I'm like, oh, be careful, there's
- 34:08mosquitoes. There's always mosquitoes there.
- 34:11And as soon as I look down, that little fucker was already trying
- 34:14to get at my leg. And I'm like, Nope.
- 34:15And I tracked them and then bam, no more mosquito.
- 34:21But what really haunted me this week was the fact that we're
- 34:27nearing a season, a season that's very near and dear to us.
- 34:31Pumpkin spice latte season to many, yes.
- 34:36But it's, it's Halloween time. Yeah, we're officially mid
- 34:41August. That was that was good.
- 34:43That was that was really deep. And I think a lot of us are
- 34:47beginning to celebrate the beginning of the Halloween
- 34:50season. A lot of people, it starts after
- 34:54July 4th. Honestly, yes, but this weather
- 34:58doesn't give me Halloween. But these past couple days have
- 35:01been a little bit better, so I'm starting to just be more open to
- 35:06early Halloween. Specifically, I want to talk to
- 35:10you about one of the most recognizable figures in
- 35:12Halloween. I think you know who this is.
- 35:17The devil. He rides a horse maybe, so it
- 35:20could be the devil. He wears a black cloak.
- 35:24Could be a bruja. Or a vampire.
- 35:26Or a vampire Dracula. It's headless.
- 35:33Who's headless? Let's keep going.
- 35:37And usually carries either a sword, a pumpkin, or whatever
- 35:43else happens to make this situation worse.
- 35:46A gun. A gun?
- 35:48No, not a gun. What is that?
- 35:51A knife? No, Brian, today we're talking
- 35:54about the Headless Horseman. You don't say, you said
- 35:59headless. In my mind went oh.
- 36:00Horse. Oh, I'm thinking of the headless
- 36:02horse man. Man, there's a headless horse on
- 36:05its way. The idea of a headless rider
- 36:09goes back much further than The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.
- 36:12Stories about supernatural riders show up throughout
- 36:15European folklore, including Irish, Scottish, Welsh, Dutch,
- 36:20and Germanic to name a few. Even the Brothers Grimm had
- 36:24their own version of a Headless Horseman or a headless rider.
- 36:27Brian, did you know that there were versions of this guy
- 36:30running around in folklore long before Ichabod Crane?
- 36:35That's so crazy because one, I have no idea who Ichabod Crane
- 36:39is, OK, and two, I don't know what Sleepy Hollow is.
- 36:43And three, I know who Brothers Grimm is.
- 36:47I did not know that they had their own Headless Horseman.
- 36:50Well. OK, we're I'm going to take a
- 36:51second and I'm going to come back after Brian has finished
- 36:56watching or reading about Ichabod Crane and the Headless
- 36:59Horseman. It sounds familiar.
- 37:01It's in there somewhere. Remind me.
- 37:02I will read. No, you'll you'll trigger my
- 37:04memory. Yeah, I'll continue.
- 37:06I'm scratching my head right now.
- 37:08One of the most famous older versions comes from Ireland.
- 37:12He's called the Dulahan. This guy makes the Headless
- 37:17Horseman look like he needs to step up his.
- 37:19Game. Oh no, I'm scared.
- 37:21The dulahan is a supernatural figure associated with death.
- 37:26He rides a Black Horse, carries his own severed head under his
- 37:29arm, and according to the folklore, the head doesn't just
- 37:33sit there looking creepy, its eyes can scan the countryside
- 37:37from a great distance. The whole country.
- 37:39The whole countryside. Some versions describe the eyes
- 37:42as glowing and have an incredibly sharp vision.
- 37:46How do we know who's testing who's his optometry?
- 37:50His eye doctor, for sure. Yeah.
- 37:52Apparently having your head detached from your body comes
- 37:55with a few supernatural upgrades.
- 37:57Now, let's talk about his whip. You know, braided leather.
- 38:02That's what you would automatically assume, right?
- 38:03Yeah. Wrong.
- 38:04Oh, OK. It's supposedly made out of a
- 38:06human spine. If you had to encounter one of
- 38:10these things, would the glowing severed head bother you more?
- 38:14Or would it be the realization that this dude is carrying a
- 38:16human spine whip? I would see him holding his
- 38:20head. I don't think anything else
- 38:21registers. OK other than wow, his shoulders
- 38:25are so broad. Oh my God, there's no neck.
- 38:27What is he holding? Oh, his head.
- 38:29I got to go. Oh, but this guy's not a big
- 38:32back, right? Oh no, he's real.
- 38:35Built like a Dorito. Big shoulders, skinny waist.
- 38:40The Headless Horseman. So the Dulahan was considered a
- 38:46harbinger of death. According to the legend, when he
- 38:50stops writing, he calls out someone's name and that person
- 38:55dies. But his head is not attached.
- 38:57How does it still work? Well, remember it, It's still
- 38:59like scanning and still move. It's not just like a dead,
- 39:02severed head. It's sentient.
- 39:04Sentient it, it still moves, it still reacts.
- 39:07Maybe it's Wi-Fi? Maybe he probably has a good
- 39:10like portable Wi-Fi rather or five.
- 39:13G on him. So imagine you're sitting at
- 39:15home, probably signing some papers on the throne, and you
- 39:19hear a horse outside. You look through the window and
- 39:22there's a headless man sitting on a Black Horse and he calls
- 39:25out Brian. At that point, I don't think
- 39:31there's a safety route or a safety plan.
- 39:32You're just going to watch the credits roll.
- 39:35Is he holding the head up to the window?
- 39:38Because then I might giggle A. Little bit peeping Headless
- 39:41Horseman. He's like, oh, this window's a
- 39:42little tall here. He's like, wait, hold up.
- 39:45I mean, get on my toes. Is Brian signing papers right?
- 39:47Now on my throne. On your on the old throne.
- 39:50My toilet. That's how I envisioned it.
- 39:51It's it's, it's supposed to be a toilet.
- 39:53Oh, OK, yeah, now my windows are frosted.
- 39:55I wouldn't know. Well, he can see through the
- 39:57frosted. Window.
- 39:58Oh my God, we're not safe. No one's.
- 40:00Safe. No one is safe.
- 40:02There's also a Scottish story about a man named Ewan.
- 40:06McGregor. No, I think he's Irish.
- 40:09Funny enough, according to the legend, Ewan and his horse were
- 40:13both decapitated during a battle of the Isle of Mole.
- 40:17What was I right when I said the headless horse?
- 40:20True, and the two supposedly continued haunting the area
- 40:25while searching for their missing heads.
- 40:27So the idea of a writer who has died violently and continues
- 40:30wandering around after death isn't uniquely American, but
- 40:34America eventually gave us the version everyone knows.
- 40:38This is where we meet Washington Irving.
- 40:40In 1820, Irving published The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, one of
- 40:44America's earliest and most enduring ghost stories.
- 40:48The story takes place in a real area of New York, and Irving
- 40:51mixed actual locations, family names, and Revolutionary War
- 40:56history with folklore and outright fiction.
- 40:59At the center of it all is Ichabod Crane.
- 41:02Ichabod is a schoolmaster who arrives in Sleepy Hollow and
- 41:05becomes interested in Katrina Van Tassel, an 18 year old
- 41:08heiress. Unfortunately for Ichabod, he's
- 41:12not the only man interested in Katrina.
- 41:14There's also Brom Bones. Brom is basically the exact
- 41:18opposite of Ichabod. Ichabod is a lanky, nervous and
- 41:23extremely interested in ghost stories.
- 41:25Brahm is a local tough guy. This.
- 41:27Is spoilers, by the way, if you've never read the 1850s
- 41:31something? Spoiler alert, please stop
- 41:33listening 3 minutes ago. So you've got these two men
- 41:37competing for the same woman, and then Ichabod attends a party
- 41:40at the Van Tassel farm where everyone spends the evening
- 41:43telling ghost stories. In my opinion, that seems like
- 41:47such a good time. I'm down.
- 41:49And it doesn't get better than that.
- 41:50Just getting together, ghost stories, having a party, but
- 41:53after the party Ichabod has to ride home alone at night and
- 41:58through the woods after listening to everyone tell them
- 42:01about ghosts. What are your thoughts on this?
- 42:04You're leaving a party. You just left the ghost story
- 42:06soiree. Oh my God, 30th birthday party
- 42:10idea and then story soiree ghost story.
- 42:12Soiree and now you got to ride home alone at night to the
- 42:14woods. That would be a little
- 42:17precarious. I'd be a little scared.
- 42:20Would you ask to just stay like, hey, can I just like, borrow?
- 42:22Yeah. Can I just crash on the couch?
- 42:24Yeah, I can see him on the floor even if you don't have a couch.
- 42:27In this huge. Mansion, farm, Mansion.
- 42:30Yeah, Yeah, you are indeed an heiress.
- 42:34Or be like anyone headed in that direction.
- 42:36Let's go together. Is anyone leaving too?
- 42:37Hey, I didn't drink I I could be DDI.
- 42:41Can I can ride your horse? Yeah, I can.
- 42:46Ichabod eventually encounters a rider on his way home.
- 42:49Aww. He met a friend.
- 42:51At first he assumes it's another traveller.
- 42:53Then he realized something is wrong.
- 42:55This rider has no head and the horseman begins chasing him.
- 43:00According to Irving's story, the horseman eventually throws
- 43:03something at Ichabod. It's a pumpkin.
- 43:06Ichabod is knocked from his horse and the thing disappears.
- 43:11What a good arm. He said, locking in target.
- 43:15No, he didn't say anything. He has no head.
- 43:20The next morning his hat is found along with a smashed
- 43:23pumpkin. And that's it.
- 43:25Smashed pumpkins. The Smashing Pumpkins.
- 43:28We're left wondering what actually happened to him.
- 43:30Irving never gives us a clear answer.
- 43:32Was Ichabod genuinely attacked by a ghost, or was Brom Bones
- 43:36behind the whole thing? Because Brom has a motive, he
- 43:41wants Katrina as well. Yeah, get rid of the
- 43:42competition. And Irving leaves enough
- 43:45ambiguity for you to wonder whether Ichabod encountered
- 43:48something supernatural or just got psychologically terrorized
- 43:51by a guy who just committed to a prank.
- 43:53Extreme case of bullying. It's psychological.
- 43:57I mean a pumpkin bro that's out of this world.
- 43:59So what do you buy? Do you think this was a ghost or
- 44:02was it the competing man? Oh my God, I was fully on the
- 44:05ghost train. I'm like, yeah, it was a
- 44:07Headless Horseman, throw in his pumpkins.
- 44:10But then you said, Oh my God, it's a crime of passion.
- 44:14Premeditated. And I think I got to lean into
- 44:17that direction for drama. OK, OK, so.
- 44:19I think it was Brahm, Team Brahm.
- 44:21Yeah. OK, OK.
- 44:23He did what he had to do. It's 1850 something.
- 44:26You got to try it all. The world is different back
- 44:28then. She's an heiress.
- 44:30She's an heiress. And he knew when he was leaving
- 44:32because he announced it, most likely to everyone saying, all
- 44:35right, farewell into the night I go.
- 44:38Never let anyone know your next move.
- 44:40Exactly. Irish goodbyes, they exist for a
- 44:44reason. Never post where you're at in
- 44:47the moment, never say when you're leaving, and just tell a
- 44:51homie when you get home. By Raven, yes.
- 44:56Couple days later, OK, They they made it home 2 weeks ago.
- 44:59Cool. In the end it created a regional
- 45:01ghost legend. I think that's commitment.
- 45:04There's another part of the story that gets really
- 45:06interesting when you start digging into where Irving got
- 45:08his horsemen. 1 popular explanation connects him to the
- 45:12American Revolutionary War. The Battle of White Plains
- 45:16happened on October 28th, 1776, just days before Halloween
- 45:21Goodyear. According to the legend, a
- 45:23Haitian soldier fighting for the British was decapitated by a
- 45:26cannonball during the battle. His body was supposedly buried
- 45:30in Sleepy Hollow churchyard, while his head was destroyed on
- 45:33the battlefield and couldn't be recovered.
- 45:35So the ghost supposedly rides through the night searching for
- 45:38the head that he never got back. If you were Washington Irving
- 45:42and somebody told you a story in the 1817, are you writing all
- 45:47that information down? No, this is going to exist in my
- 45:50head and when I tell the next person, he's going to be a
- 45:53little different. He's going to be a little more.
- 45:54Dramatic. Yeah, whatever.
- 45:55I remember he was like 8 feet. He was 8 feet tall.
- 45:59Yeah, he was holding 2 heads. 1. What he threw at me, got it, got
- 46:03it. It was the pumpkin.
- 46:04Got it, got it, got it. That's.
- 46:06The the rug. Pull the rug under their feet.
- 46:08Think it's a second head, nose, a pumpkin.
- 46:11Yeah, yeah, yeah. Zing.
- 46:12Got him, got him. Here's what we need to separate
- 46:15the legend from the history. There isn't solid evidence that
- 46:18Irving based a horseman specifically on an actual
- 46:21Haitian soldier. Historians have also pointed to
- 46:23another possible influence, Sir Walter Scott's The Chase, which
- 46:28was a translation of the German poem The Wild Huntsman by
- 46:32Gottfried Berger. That story involves a wicked
- 46:35hunter who is condemned to an eternal supernatural hunt, and
- 46:39Irving actually knew Scott. It's very possible that the
- 46:42Headless Horseman is really a Frankenstein's monster of
- 46:45folklore, a little European legend here, some revolutionary
- 46:49history there, some local ghost stories.
- 46:52And Irving puts it all together and says this guy lives in New
- 46:55York and it sticks. There's something about the
- 46:58Horseman that I think explains why this particularly monster
- 47:00refuses to disappear. It's not just that he's dead,
- 47:04it's that he's still moving. Brands Potter, a professor
- 47:07specializing in Gothic studies, describes the Headless Horseman
- 47:11as representing a past that never dies but continues to
- 47:13haunt the living. The horseman is supposedly
- 47:16searching for something that was taken from him.
- 47:18It's heard and. Because he can't rest, because
- 47:20he can't close his eyes, the past keeps coming back.
- 47:25There was an article by Abigail Owen that I read where she makes
- 47:28an interesting point about the fear of decapitation itself.
- 47:31Yeah, we don't need folklore to tell us that losing your head is
- 47:34bad. Our brains already understand
- 47:36that They. Don't want to be separated.
- 47:38They're like, no. No, no, no, no.
- 47:39Wait, wait, wait. The head of this horseman takes
- 47:43something that represents death and then removes the one thing
- 47:46that we associate with identity, consciousness and life and
- 47:49somehow gives the body the ability to keep riding around
- 47:52anyway, Do you think that's what makes him creepier than
- 47:56something like a vampire or a werewolf?
- 47:58That there's no transformation? He's already dead, but he's
- 48:01still coming after you. Yeah.
- 48:03I think just a visual is enough to give you kind of like the
- 48:06heebie jeebies, because I'm envisioning it right now.
- 48:11Horse at night. Kind of scary, yeah.
- 48:14You look up and see that whoever's writing it is only
- 48:17shoulders down. Torso and legs.
- 48:20Yeah, that that's enough to make me want to run in the opposite
- 48:25direction. I'm just not interested.
- 48:27Yeah. No, thank you.
- 48:28I want nothing to do with that. All good, I'm done.
- 48:30I don't have any money, please leave me alone.
- 48:32Yeah, yeah, Floor is my car, puts it in reverse.
- 48:36The heiress is that weight. Yeah, calls on the radio help.
- 48:40Help There's a Headless Horseman.
- 48:41The apocalypse and the apocalypse is incoming.
- 48:44And now you're what's his face from the Police Department.
- 48:46All Oh my God and I'm a micro celebrity.
- 48:48What's his name? San Manego.
- 48:50Now you're San Manego, I say. We do it.
- 48:52OK, we're going to New York and we're just going to wander
- 48:55around at night until we see a headless heart.
- 48:57Did you bite your tongue again? He.
- 49:00Heard me. He can't go.
- 49:04He said try me, try me. 1st it's my tongue next to my head.
- 49:09Next to your head, your tongue is connected.
- 49:11I will no longer joke, Jerry, continue your story.
- 49:14Then there's a pumpkin. Let's talk about the pumpkin.
- 49:16If you've ever wondered why your mental image of the Headless
- 49:18Horseman probably involves A flaming Jack O Lancer, we can
- 49:22think Disney Ghost. Rider baby, but I'm thinking.
- 49:27Which is also technically Disney right now, right?
- 49:30Is it Disney now? I don't know, I just know it's
- 49:31in Fortnite. Ghost writer?
- 49:35Really. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 49:36No, you're right, you're right. In 1949, Disney released The
- 49:40Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad, with The Legend of Sleepy
- 49:44Hollow making up the second-half.
- 49:47Disney's version made the Halloween connection much
- 49:49stronger. The Van Tassel party became a
- 49:52Halloween celebration, the ghost stories became part of the
- 49:55atmosphere, and the object thrown at Ichabod became a
- 49:59flaming Jack O Lantern. The movie was also shown on
- 50:02television around Halloween for decades.
- 50:04So when you picture the Headless Horseman galloping through the
- 50:07darkness with a flaming pumpkin, that's not necessarily the image
- 50:11Washington Irving put in your head it.
- 50:13Was the mouse. It was the damn mouse.
- 50:17Do you think Disney accidentally made the horseman scarier or did
- 50:21they turn him into a mascot? I I don't have memory of the
- 50:25Disney version. Like, this is the first time I
- 50:27feel like I'm hearing about it. OK, maybe it's buried somewhere
- 50:29in my psyche. And if you pulled up a picture,
- 50:31I would be able to reference it. Yeah.
- 50:34I don't think Disney can do anything that would make me,
- 50:37like, genuinely scared, OK? Especially when it's like early
- 50:40Disney animation. Yeah, my first experience with
- 50:44the Headless Horseman Ichabod Crane was the Disney animated
- 50:47version. In elementary school.
- 50:49Wow. I I don't recall unfortunately.
- 50:52So what happens when a legend that started centuries ago
- 50:55becomes something people actually expect to see around
- 50:58Halloween? This is where I want to bring in
- 51:01something that Dave sent us. Shout out Dave.
- 51:05Shout out Dave, you're listening.
- 51:07Dave shared a Ventura County Star article about paranormal
- 51:11activity haunted homes in Ventura County and I love that
- 51:15he brought it up because it gives us a chance to pull this
- 51:18story out of Sleepy Hollow and bring it a little closer to
- 51:21home. In the article, there were some
- 51:23paranormal legends around Ventura County, and buried in
- 51:27there is a story about a headless woman reportedly seen
- 51:31dancing on stage at the Ventura Majestic Theatre.
- 51:35I just found it very fitting because we're talking about a
- 51:36decapitated head and this folklore.
- 51:39I thought you were going to talk.
- 51:40I read the article too. I thought you were going to talk
- 51:41about the char man. Nope.
- 51:42We'll get into the char man maybe another time, but I
- 51:46specifically pulled this story just because it just happened to
- 51:49be a headless person. So, according to the paranormal
- 51:52investigator Joanne Azu, the apparition may be connected to a
- 51:561932 Ventura High School graduation when a girl
- 52:00reportedly fell in the stage area and broke her neck.
- 52:04The story says her spirit may still appear at the theatre,
- 52:07dancing on stage without a head. I don't like.
- 52:10That neither do I imagine, especially because I think when
- 52:12you associate high schools, I've never heard of someone say, oh,
- 52:16my high school is not haunted. I think it's the opposite.
- 52:18There's always a story connecting your high school to
- 52:20some sort of like, haunt, and that's creepy because it's just
- 52:23generations of school trauma, trauma, just negative
- 52:27experiences. I was in drama club.
- 52:29I know where the stages are backstage, the heavy curtains.
- 52:35When it's dark in there, it is creepy.
- 52:37Yeah. So walking in there and you see
- 52:40a headless woman just dancing. Oh, Jerry, you're really scaring
- 52:44me this week. I think at this point I'm
- 52:47starting to think that the headless part is really popular
- 52:50with some ghosts. I know it's all the rage.
- 52:53It's a trend. It's the trend.
- 52:54You know who? Needs a head?
- 52:56Lose a couple pounds? Yeah.
- 52:57Who lose the neck, lose the head?
- 52:59One final question. OK, you kind of already answered
- 53:02it. So you're riding home on your
- 53:05horse at night. OK.
- 53:09You look in front of you and you're like, hey, a fellow
- 53:11traveller, but no, it's a Headless Horseman.
- 53:15Are you running, are you fighting, or are you stopping to
- 53:19ask him where he got his horse? Whose horse is that?
- 53:26I think I'd die. I think I'd get a heart attack
- 53:32and I'd die. Headless.
- 53:36Horseman, seen in the area body found he was not headless.
- 53:40Yeah. I am going the fuck home with my
- 53:43head still attached. Oh, I love that for you.
- 53:45You're so brave. You think you can outrun him?
- 53:48If I cut through the trees, I would probably yeah, I have a
- 53:52good chance. If not, then yeah, just blind
- 53:55him with my flashlight. Oh, wait.
- 53:58Osno had Jerry. Oh wait, that's the whole point.
- 54:01You're right, I'll pepper spray him.
- 54:03Wait, I'll use my. Taser.
- 54:09You'll scream at him. You'll just attractive.
- 54:11I'll say I do not give you consent.
- 54:13Leave me alone. Run.
- 54:15Your horse? Another direction, bud.
- 54:18But like, focus on your head. At game week.
- 54:21Nope, it is like a porque Latinas puesta.
- 54:25Oh. Oh, so you're just going to
- 54:28roast? I'm just.
- 54:28Going to start roasting him and that's what he get and I'm going
- 54:31to take his horse because I think that horse is beautiful.
- 54:34Cooler than your horse? Give me here's my horse trade.
- 54:37You know what? No.
- 54:38Walk home your life back together.
- 54:43Wow. Get your thoughts in order.
- 54:44That's what I would tell them. And that's the story of the
- 54:48Headless Horseman. So much history there that I did
- 54:51not know. I feel like maybe there's a
- 54:55memory somewhere in my brain. Let me there's an image it, but
- 55:00it's it's the visual stylings of scooby-doo.
- 55:04Yeah, no, I don't think that scare me, even as a child
- 55:07watching that. Sorry, no.
- 55:09It's OK. What did scare me was
- 55:11goosebumps. Oh my God, that would keep me up
- 55:14at night. No, no, just wow.
- 55:18No head, no neck, but he still has like a collar on his Cape.
- 55:22Yep. What for?
- 55:23What's that? Keeping warm.
- 55:26His neck. Oh wait, I.
- 55:27Wonder what happens when you look down it?
- 55:29What's in there? It's Hollow Halloween.
- 55:35Here's your joke was better Sleepy Hollow.
- 55:37Yeah, he has a Halloween. Dang, what is Halloween season?
- 55:42Happy Halloween. Happy.
- 55:43Halloween in August. Yeah.
- 55:45I went into Sam's Club today and they had a lot of Halloween
- 55:47decorations and also Christmas lights.
- 55:50That's awesome. The best time of the year We're
- 55:54finally heading into that tail end of the holidays, I.
- 55:58Don't think my favorite time of the year is like January 2nd.
- 56:02What's that when all the trees get thrown away?
- 56:05Why that's so sad? Back to like the normal swing of
- 56:07things? No, because what happens?
- 56:09Is your whimsy. Capitalism.
- 56:11Oh my God. It's all.
- 56:14You hear that? I did hear that.
- 56:15That's what happened. You know the the ghost fucking
- 56:18hear you talking shit about the holidays.
- 56:20I cleansed my house today. I put Palo Santo everywhere.
- 56:23I'm going to do it again when Jerry leaves because he brought
- 56:25his bad energy in here with a Headless Horseman.
- 56:28I mean, let me bite my tongue. You were talking shit.
- 56:31First of all, I think the place was lit up when I walked in.
- 56:35How can you have a head and then like your emotions?
- 56:37How can you not have a head and be so fragile and your emotions?
- 56:40Hello. Like girl backbone, like a
- 56:46spine. Yeah, kind of detached whip
- 56:50like. Kind of detached and used as a
- 56:53whip now. So yeah, friend, that's, that's
- 56:56my story. A little shorter this time
- 56:58around, but. That was that was pretty good.
- 57:00Very interesting topics today. I had a great time.
- 57:02So did I. I hope you enjoyed I.
- 57:04Think these were two very. Unique topics, yeah, yeah.
- 57:09Because we went to Europe, we went to Europe, we went to
- 57:12Ireland, we went to New York. And America?
- 57:15Went to Mexico. Monterrey.
- 57:18Who do you think would win in a fight, the Headless Horseman or
- 57:21the Bruja? Oh.
- 57:21Oh, OK. Everyone comment who you think
- 57:24is going to win my money respectfully.
- 57:31OK. Headless Hartson, because from
- 57:34your story he's got some aim. He's got the aim, he has some
- 57:38sort of weapon. Yeah, La Bruja couldn't even
- 57:41catch the guy in the car. Like she didn't even hit the
- 57:44windshield. Yeah, I feel like the only, and
- 57:48I'm trying to play like devil's advocate here because I also
- 57:50agreed to Headless Horseman, but to give the Bruja some points, I
- 57:54feel like she was only affected by something like holy or
- 57:57something that's the opposite of like necrotic.
- 57:59He's not holy. He's not.
- 58:00I think he they're on the same plane.
- 58:02Yeah, they're from the same class.
- 58:06And maybe they hit it off and there is no fight and it's just
- 58:09really romantic. She just wants a man to do her
- 58:12bidding. He has no head to complain.
- 58:17It's a it's a enemies to lovers, yeah.
- 58:20It'd be love at first sight, but only halfway.
- 58:25But he might have excellent vision, so he might just see
- 58:27through. Oh true, because he does have
- 58:28his head. It's like, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 58:29Yeah, Yeah. Yeah, right, right.
- 58:32Right, I see what you. Where you were going and it was
- 58:33really good. Because I forget his head's
- 58:34there. Because I'm thinking Jack O
- 58:35Lantern now, yeah. Yes, he has no, No, in the
- 58:38folklore version he has great vision 2020, He has contacts in
- 58:43because he can scan the whole countryside eagle vision and he
- 58:48just sees her and he spots her going over the mountain.
- 58:51Watches that head right at her come back.
- 58:53And it's a Will you go out with me?
- 58:55That's what she was holding. Yes, it was.
- 58:58It was his head. Damn.
- 59:02Oh my God this is so romantic. I'm glad we did this.
