- 0:10Speaker 1: Hey, ladies and gentlemen, I'm Wilmer Valderrama. I'm pretty you
- 0:16Speaker 1: got to play a character.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Sounds like that.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Welcome to those amigos.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Amigos.
- 0:21Speaker 1: You might be listening, or you might be watching us. Yes,
- 0:25Speaker 1: and if you're watching us, you can probably notice the
- 0:29Speaker 1: bags under my eyes in this very moment.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Or workingman, Yes, we both are.
- 0:36Speaker 1: I happened to wrap season twenty three of NCIS last night.
- 0:41Speaker 1: It was twenty three crazy, and I'm happy to report
- 0:46Speaker 1: that it was also my two hundredth episode on NCS.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Wow. Well, and how many seasons for you?
- 0:53Speaker 1: In particular? How many have you done on that show?
- 0:57Speaker 1: This was my ninth season. Ninth seasons, So the next
- 1:00Speaker 1: season we'll we met tenth.
- 1:02Speaker 2: How many seasons of seventy show did you do?
- 1:04Speaker 1: Eight? I just tied broke your record. No, I just tied.
- 1:11Speaker 1: I just tied both records. So I did two hundred
- 1:14Speaker 1: episodes of that seventy show of a comedy, and I
- 1:19Speaker 1: just did two hundred episodes of a drama.
- 1:21Speaker 2: Check that box.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Pretty pretty crazy. I'm pretty proud of myself, man. I
- 1:25Speaker 1: think you know, obviously I tried to be as humble
- 1:29Speaker 1: as possible when it comes to the shit. I don't
- 1:30Speaker 1: like talking about it that often, you know, but last
- 1:33Speaker 1: night was actually a very humbly moment, you know that,
- 1:35Speaker 1: like if I hadn't done anything between, which I've also
- 1:39Speaker 1: have done a gang of stuff in between. Of course,
- 1:42Speaker 1: I've done four hundred episodes of television and yeah, two
- 1:45Speaker 1: hundred of them people laugh, and another two hundred of
- 1:48Speaker 1: them made people, yeah, terrified, murder.
- 1:52Speaker 2: And you've had generations of people watching you on TV
- 1:57Speaker 2: and looking at you as an example was they forged
- 2:01Speaker 2: their own roads. As when we were kids, right, how
- 2:05Speaker 2: we used to watch Jimmy Smith's on La.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Law Institutional Come Home and you're gonna watch that?
- 2:12Speaker 2: Yeah yeah? Or or eric is Trota and Chips like
- 2:16Speaker 2: you're that guy?
- 2:17Speaker 1: Now I felt well, I mean those guys are larger
- 2:20Speaker 1: than nice.
- 2:20Speaker 2: I mean, I think I feel happy.
- 2:24Speaker 1: That I wrapped because I'm so tired, you know, Like,
- 2:26Speaker 1: I don't know, we've talked about it before, but you
- 2:28Speaker 1: do twenty episodes of a season as grateful as we are.
- 2:32Speaker 2: By episode seventeen, you're like, yeah, yeah, like human holidays
- 2:38Speaker 2: like January is You're like, oh, you're dragon.
- 2:41Speaker 1: The human body is like, let me know, when it's
- 2:44Speaker 1: hy so you can get sick, right, and then you
- 2:47Speaker 1: just like fall up.
- 2:48Speaker 2: You know, do you feel at this point, and this
- 2:51Speaker 2: is maybe a rhetorical question here, you must know your
- 2:55Speaker 2: character inside out at this point, Right, you.
- 2:59Speaker 1: Made line and watched me like him?
- 3:03Speaker 2: Did you see where that body was?
- 3:06Speaker 1: Right, Freddy? Did you see where that body was? Yeah?
- 3:16Speaker 2: I tip the finger prints?
- 3:18Speaker 1: Anything come up?
- 3:21Speaker 2: No?
- 3:23Speaker 1: Hm, that's CAZy. Well she got to hit on the prince.
- 3:32Speaker 1: It's your son, it's your son, murder. How do you
- 3:45Speaker 1: feel at this stage? Right, You've done, You've done these
- 3:49Speaker 1: many seasons. You know your character inside out. Do you
- 3:52Speaker 1: still get direction? Do you still get feedback? I mean,
- 3:55Speaker 1: how can somebody.
- 3:57Speaker 2: Direct you or give you feedback when you've been playing
- 3:59Speaker 2: the same character for so many years. I bet it's tricky.
- 4:04Speaker 2: I bet it's tricky because.
- 4:07Speaker 1: Everything one of these actors on the show. I mean,
- 4:12Speaker 1: there's just no freaking way that a director can come
- 4:14Speaker 1: in and know what you what your characters going through, right,
- 4:18Speaker 1: because your character has all these like years and years
- 4:21Speaker 1: and years of layers that are kind of reacting in
- 4:24Speaker 1: a way that's like organic in human, you know. But
- 4:28Speaker 1: then there are directors that have been directing the show
- 4:32Speaker 1: for twenty years, who've.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Been on this journey, so they know the trage.
- 4:37Speaker 1: They know the characters really well, so they'll have they'll
- 4:39Speaker 1: have something to say. But I will say that with
- 4:42Speaker 1: that time spent together also comes a crazy amount of
- 4:46Speaker 1: trust in the choices that we both make, so they
- 4:49Speaker 1: kind of let you cook.
- 4:51Speaker 2: Has there ever been anyone who have come and have
- 4:53Speaker 2: given you feedback? I mean this late in the game
- 4:57Speaker 2: where you've been like, your direction is off. I've lived
- 5:02Speaker 2: with this character for this many seasons.
- 5:05Speaker 1: I try to stay open. I really try to stay
- 5:07Speaker 1: open because every director sees things that others don't, and
- 5:11Speaker 1: every director wants to bring a flavor and bring a
- 5:15Speaker 1: vibe that you know, the show could benefit if you're
- 5:17Speaker 1: allow it to take the show to different places. Right,
- 5:20Speaker 1: So my heart always stays open. But it is tough
- 5:24Speaker 1: because I've had directions that I'm just like, have you
- 5:27Speaker 1: ever watched the show? Like, for example, like my character
- 5:32Speaker 1: is kind of like the grumpy, like you know, you know,
- 5:37Speaker 1: short tempered, kind of like lone wolf and smart ass, right,
- 5:39Speaker 1: And he's funny because he's a smart ass and he's
- 5:45Speaker 1: not intimidated.
- 5:46Speaker 2: Right.
- 5:46Speaker 1: The only thing he fears is God. So when he
- 5:51Speaker 1: when he's in the squadron and Mark Harmon used to
- 5:55Speaker 1: walk in, you know, gives he you know, Mark Carmon
- 5:59Speaker 1: commands authority. He looks like he's the boss. He walks
- 6:03Speaker 1: in and he's the baddest man on that scene. Right,
- 6:09Speaker 1: So everybody's like, oh, here comes the boss whatever. And
- 6:12Speaker 1: then my character, based on the choices I'm making and
- 6:15Speaker 1: what I've created, he doesn't stand up with authority interests
- 6:20Speaker 1: the room. He's kind of a little bit of that, like, yeah,
- 6:24Speaker 1: so what are we doing, you know what I mean?
- 6:26Speaker 2: Rebellious or whatever? You know.
- 6:28Speaker 1: So director came in and he's like, hey, when the
- 6:30Speaker 1: boss comes in, you should get up and just be
- 6:32Speaker 1: a little nervous because now he's gonna ask you to
- 6:34Speaker 1: give him an update.
- 6:35Speaker 2: And so you had to explain that to him.
- 6:38Speaker 1: I had to. I had to explain to him that
- 6:43Speaker 1: you don't do that.
- 6:46Speaker 2: That's not gonna happen.
- 6:47Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm rebellious, but it's but it's just like those
- 6:51Speaker 1: are like the creative things, you know, But it is tough.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Sometimes you have to allow those nots to happen. And
- 6:58Speaker 1: I think as an actor, you you have to understand
- 7:01Speaker 1: that there is a collaboration that has to be allowed,
- 7:05Speaker 1: you know. So I think in that moment, maybe I
- 7:08Speaker 1: grew a little cynical. Maybe it grew a little bit like,
- 7:11Speaker 1: come on, man, I know this guy better than you.
- 7:13Speaker 1: You know, was that your response to him when he
- 7:15Speaker 1: gives no no? I? You know? You as an actor,
- 7:18Speaker 1: you always have to have a gracious way of receiving things.
- 7:21Speaker 1: You know, and you also know whether you agree with
- 7:23Speaker 1: it or not agree with it. The best rule of
- 7:25Speaker 1: thumb is, you know, listen, if you disagree with it,
- 7:30Speaker 1: bring a better idea to the table. I never just
- 7:33Speaker 1: be like not doing that right. That creates bad energy.
- 7:37Speaker 2: So there's a way that there's a finesse.
- 7:39Speaker 1: So if you give me that direction and I disagree
- 7:42Speaker 1: with it, I'd say something like, I appreciate that note.
- 7:47Speaker 1: I think that sounds that sounds like it makes a
- 7:50Speaker 1: lot of sense. Unfortunately, I think the dynamic between these
- 7:54Speaker 1: characters it's a little bit of a different vibe. So
- 7:58Speaker 1: my character will have a tough time kind of doing that,
- 8:01Speaker 1: you know, So you know, or there's other ways of
- 8:05Speaker 1: saying it, right, Like I think the thing ultimately, if
- 8:07Speaker 1: somebody would give me that note. The way I handled
- 8:09Speaker 1: it that day was thank you, you know, let me
- 8:12Speaker 1: let me give that a try.
- 8:14Speaker 2: Mm hmm.
- 8:15Speaker 1: And then they said action and I just didn't do it.
- 8:20Speaker 2: I didn't do it.
- 8:21Speaker 1: But it's just but at that point I couldn't. I
- 8:23Speaker 1: couldn't do it.
- 8:24Speaker 2: Yeah, a character. I couldn't pull it off. So was
- 8:27Speaker 2: he like, God, you didn't do the thing?
- 8:29Speaker 1: No? I think he understood. He understood it wasn't the character,
- 8:32Speaker 1: you know, eventually, But you know, that's that's kind of
- 8:35Speaker 1: like a really mild example of something like you know,
- 8:37Speaker 1: but I think it's it translates into everything, right, whether
- 8:40Speaker 1: it's artistry, whether it's life. You know, But what about you?
- 8:43Speaker 1: Did you ever have you ever gone a direction where
- 8:45Speaker 1: you're like what, Yeah, yeah, what show? What movie?
- 8:51Speaker 2: Well on you know, the last show I did Bull
- 8:55Speaker 2: That was the first successful network TV run. I'm never
- 9:00Speaker 2: had a successful network.
- 9:02Speaker 1: TV because they were doing massive features. They were globally
- 9:06Speaker 1: distributed by massive studios and they are movies that will
- 9:11Speaker 1: live forever.
- 9:13Speaker 2: Well, thank you, I tried.
- 9:15Speaker 1: I thank the Warner Bros.
- 9:17Speaker 2: Was a paramount. I tried. You know, there was a
- 9:22Speaker 2: couple of there was a couple of tries that didn't manifest.
- 9:25Speaker 2: And then and then when Bull hit, I was like, oh, okay,
- 9:27Speaker 2: this is a completely different experience for me. But he
- 9:32Speaker 2: was a very different character. He was. He was a lawyer,
- 9:36Speaker 2: but he was more like at al Pacino and Injustice
- 9:40Speaker 2: for All or like Tom Cruise and a Few Good Men.
- 9:44Speaker 2: He was more bombastic and and and outwardly was it
- 9:48Speaker 2: was different than what you would see. And there's no
- 9:50Speaker 2: disrespect to like Law and Order any of those other shows,
- 9:53Speaker 2: but it was very, very different than what they were doing.
- 9:56Speaker 2: And and this was around like season three. This director
- 10:00Speaker 2: came in and was seeing what I was doing, which
- 10:03Speaker 2: was much different than what he was used to, and
- 10:06Speaker 2: he made some comment like dude, you're like overacting. He
- 10:12Speaker 2: made he didn't use those words exactly, but but you
- 10:17Speaker 2: know he was. He was saying like, you're doing too much.
- 10:20Speaker 2: And I'm like, have you watched the show? This is
- 10:24Speaker 2: this is who the character is. You know, he's a
- 10:26Speaker 2: little over the top. That's that's kind of what made
- 10:28Speaker 2: this show successful is this new way of playing a lawyer.
- 10:34Speaker 2: And he couldn't compute. It didn't compute in his head.
- 10:37Speaker 2: And so he gave me some direction and I sort
- 10:40Speaker 2: of tried it, and it was definitely a tamer version
- 10:43Speaker 2: of what I was doing before that. But I just
- 10:47Speaker 2: relied on my instincts, and I relied on this character
- 10:50Speaker 2: that I created, and I just kept going in that direction.
- 10:54Speaker 2: So that was interesting. And so there was a bit
- 10:57Speaker 2: of me that was like, but I've been playing in
- 11:00Speaker 2: this character for three four seasons already, Like what do
- 11:02Speaker 2: you and and and you want to try to say
- 11:06Speaker 2: that without being rude. I was trying not to be
- 11:08Speaker 2: rude and be cool about it, and uh so I
- 11:13Speaker 2: just tried to navigate through it the best that I could.
- 11:15Speaker 1: What what What do you think it takes for you
- 11:17Speaker 1: to translate criticism with grace, understanding and patience.
- 11:28Speaker 2: What do you got to lock Cain on? Humility? I
- 11:32Speaker 2: think you have to have a certain level of humility.
- 11:35Speaker 2: Whether it's in our job or even when I'm talking
- 11:37Speaker 2: to my kids and their jobs and we have conversations
- 11:40Speaker 2: about their interactions with their colleagues or their bosses, there's
- 11:45Speaker 2: a there's a form of humility and and time to
- 11:49Speaker 2: process whatever their feedback is, whatever their notes are. I
- 11:55Speaker 2: think that as human beings, sometimes there's an impulsive aspect
- 12:01Speaker 2: to us as humans, especially you and I. Right, we're
- 12:04Speaker 2: like passionate human beings, right, and we know what we're doing,
- 12:07Speaker 2: and the first impulse is to go, no, you got
- 12:09Speaker 2: it wrong. Right, But there's also this politics aspect to it,
- 12:14Speaker 2: and there's a there's a decorum, and there's a there's
- 12:18Speaker 2: a way you do it, and so there's a sense
- 12:21Speaker 2: of control that I think that I've acquired through maturity
- 12:24Speaker 2: and time in the business that maybe if I was younger,
- 12:27Speaker 2: I would have been like, no, that's not the way
- 12:29Speaker 2: you do it, you know, although I've always been pretty
- 12:31Speaker 2: cool when it comes to that stuff. I had Oh, man,
- 12:34Speaker 2: what else? Man? I had a director tell me one time,
- 12:37Speaker 2: and a really big one too. Man recently, a big
- 12:41Speaker 2: one who is very very relevant today. He asked me
- 12:44Speaker 2: to we were doing this project together, and he wanted
- 12:47Speaker 2: me to watch a movie by Michael Mann. I think
- 12:50Speaker 2: it was called man Hunter, right with Billy God what
- 12:54Speaker 2: was his name? Man? Oh my god, I'm blinking on
- 12:56Speaker 2: his name. No, no, no, no, shout out who starred
- 13:01Speaker 2: in CSI, the Original CSI. He started Manhunter the Original
- 13:06Speaker 2: and he was like, I want you to watch this movie.
- 13:07Speaker 2: You're going to play a cop and I was like okay,
- 13:09Speaker 2: and I watched and I saw what he was doing.
- 13:10Speaker 2: I was like, okay, you sort of want a version
- 13:13Speaker 2: of that, okay, And I went into the reading and
- 13:17Speaker 2: we did a reading and I was kind of doing
- 13:19Speaker 2: my version of it, and he stopped me man like
- 13:21Speaker 2: the first first sentence in, two sentence in, and he's like,
- 13:24Speaker 2: what are you doing? Man? You sound like you're doing
- 13:26Speaker 2: like an episode of CSI or something. And I was like, wow,
- 13:30Speaker 2: I can't believe he just said that to me. And
- 13:33Speaker 2: I was like okay.
- 13:34Speaker 1: Then, and then he's like, okay, now let's do it
- 13:36Speaker 1: one more time.
- 13:37Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, And he just sort of micromanaged at the
- 13:41Speaker 2: reading every line.
- 13:43Speaker 1: I never painted Christopher knowing us for me, and I.
- 13:47Speaker 2: Was like, I'm about to get fired. I guess I
- 13:51Speaker 2: thought I was doing what you wanted me to do.
- 13:53Speaker 2: And here's the thing, right, So I had a very
- 13:56Speaker 2: specific interpretation of the character and I was just kind
- 13:58Speaker 2: of like, no, this is just a reading, Like let's
- 14:00Speaker 2: just wait till we get there. And it made me
- 14:03Speaker 2: so incredibly insecure, and I went all the way around
- 14:06Speaker 2: trying to figure out trying to figure out what he wanted,
- 14:09Speaker 2: and he gave me notes, gave me notes, and then
- 14:10Speaker 2: we eventually ended up what my instincts said the character
- 14:14Speaker 2: was to begin with.
- 14:16Speaker 1: That's always the case.
- 14:18Speaker 2: And what I learned there was like, good dude, if
- 14:20Speaker 2: you would have just let me do what I do.
- 14:23Speaker 2: Hired me for a reason, I'm not going to come
- 14:26Speaker 2: across in your movie like I'm doing an episode of
- 14:28Speaker 2: what and you know who, God bless those people. I'm
- 14:31Speaker 2: not dissing those people are their work. But and then,
- 14:36Speaker 2: and then we came all the way around, and so
- 14:38Speaker 2: finally when when I hit the note, he was like, yeah,
- 14:40Speaker 2: that's it, and I'm like, bro, that's what I was
- 14:42Speaker 2: doing from like day one, and he's and he was,
- 14:46Speaker 2: you know, and it made me so incredibly insecure because
- 14:49Speaker 2: he was just such a big director. Man.
- 14:51Speaker 3: I was like, wow, Man, anyway, I gotta tell my
- 15:02Speaker 3: Wes Craven story at some point.
- 15:05Speaker 2: Now's the time, man, feedback is it how I told
- 15:08Speaker 2: that story? We're talking about feedback.
- 15:10Speaker 1: I don't think I need to tell story. I did
- 15:13Speaker 1: a movie with West Craven called Cursed. Yeah. Shout out
- 15:18Speaker 1: to Christina Ricci, who, by the way, I was supposed
- 15:22Speaker 1: to play her her best friend at work.
- 15:24Speaker 2: Yeah, and.
- 15:27Speaker 1: So many years ago, many goes, and I said, you know,
- 15:30Speaker 1: shout out to her because she showed so much grace, Yeah,
- 15:34Speaker 1: so much patience, and she was just such a great
- 15:36Speaker 1: team player. And I don't even I think she'll remember
- 15:39Speaker 1: we had we did a scene. Yeah, I was.
- 15:43Speaker 2: I was.
- 15:46Speaker 1: I was asked to do this sceno and almost like
- 15:48Speaker 1: twenty two times and she had to read opposite meian
- 15:52Speaker 1: entire time. And I was like, I'm sorry, I know
- 15:54Speaker 1: what's going on?
- 15:55Speaker 2: What was it that you weren't giving him.
- 15:58Speaker 1: That he was trying to like he was trying to
- 16:01Speaker 1: make my character a little more animated. He wanted me
- 16:04Speaker 1: to play her best friend, but he wanted me to
- 16:08Speaker 1: change the entire characters Bean and self.
- 16:14Speaker 2: You know, like everything that.
- 16:18Speaker 1: Yeah, this meant everything. But he was doing it during
- 16:21Speaker 1: the scene, you know, he was trying to like find
- 16:23Speaker 1: it in the scene. Meanwhile, it's like we're now two
- 16:26Speaker 1: hours of shooting the scene and I'm like, the crew
- 16:28Speaker 1: like this, and she's like, what are you not doing right?
- 16:31Speaker 1: And I was like, I don't know. She was like
- 16:34Speaker 1: she was, but but you know, it ended up that
- 16:38Speaker 1: you know that they they shut down the movie like
- 16:42Speaker 1: a week later, they had to do a gangor re rights,
- 16:45Speaker 1: and they recast the entire movie because they changed the
- 16:48Speaker 1: whole storyline. She stayed and until the people stayed and stuff.
- 16:52Speaker 1: But you didn't No, I did not make the cut.
- 16:55Speaker 1: Didn't make the cut. It's biz, man, Yeah, it's the biz.
- 16:58Speaker 1: But but you know the is that was a moment
- 17:02Speaker 1: where I took every direction I could and did every
- 17:05Speaker 1: version of of of whatever. But that's it's interesting because
- 17:07Speaker 1: I was like.
- 17:08Speaker 2: Wait, it's gravy.
- 17:08Speaker 1: Oh my god, Like yeah, right, You're like give me
- 17:11Speaker 1: all your notes. Yeah, like twenty five times, I'm like,
- 17:14Speaker 1: please don't give me more y.
- 17:16Speaker 2: Yeah, you feel like you're disappointing a legend, you know, Yeah,
- 17:21Speaker 2: all kinds of stuff like that, you know, all kinds
- 17:23Speaker 2: of feedback and and you know, you're you're internally panicking
- 17:27Speaker 2: at the moment, right, and and you have to just
- 17:29Speaker 2: have a certain level of calm and humility, like to
- 17:34Speaker 2: really try to understand what it is that they're not
- 17:37Speaker 2: seeing in the performance or whatever. And you try not
- 17:40Speaker 2: to take it personal too, right, You just try to like.
- 17:43Speaker 1: Go because it technically isn't right because they're they're not
- 17:48Speaker 1: it's not a personal attack against you is that some
- 17:51Speaker 1: people have specificity with how they move, you know, and
- 17:57Speaker 1: and some people can and just let go. But you
- 18:00Speaker 1: know who who's amazing I just letting you cook is
- 18:03Speaker 1: Robert Rodriguez. Yeah, Robert Driguz hires you because he said
- 18:09Speaker 1: something in your eye. Yeah, and then when you're on set,
- 18:12Speaker 1: as long as it's in your eye, he'll just be
- 18:15Speaker 1: focusing on making you look the coolest guy in the planet. Yeah.
- 18:19Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, he did that with me. I came in,
- 18:22Speaker 2: I had an interpretation, and he was like, yep, I
- 18:25Speaker 2: mean I don't I think the only what were some
- 18:28Speaker 2: of the direction that you got? I mean some of
- 18:29Speaker 2: the only direction I got from him was like, don't
- 18:33Speaker 2: grimace as much when you hold the gun, don't you know,
- 18:36Speaker 2: pull back a little bit, not not you know, just
- 18:38Speaker 2: just those were those were his notes. But he he
- 18:41Speaker 2: was so generous with his with his time and and
- 18:45Speaker 2: feedback and just allowed me to allow me to cook.
- 18:50Speaker 2: What were some of the directions for me?
- 18:51Speaker 1: It's a little more technical because I played with the villain,
- 18:54Speaker 1: you know. Yeah, so he was kind of like, you know,
- 18:57Speaker 1: when you start your line, yeah, you know, a couple
- 19:01Speaker 1: of steps you feel that light. Make sure you tell
- 19:03Speaker 1: that shadow shadow over your head. Yeah yeah, and it
- 19:07Speaker 1: creates that cast, that shodow in your eyes, creates that thing.
- 19:10Speaker 1: He's like very like very specific on how he wanted
- 19:12Speaker 1: to like have that line be read in a specific lighting.
- 19:16Speaker 2: You know.
- 19:18Speaker 1: Yeah, it's more about moments. Yeah, He's really trying to
- 19:21Speaker 1: make that moment hit. So it's the note is more rhythmic,
- 19:26Speaker 1: it's more like choreograph. It's more like it's a dance.
- 19:30Speaker 1: He wants you to hit that step. Yeah, you know
- 19:33Speaker 1: because that because he's editing as he's Yeah, he wants
- 19:36Speaker 1: you to give him the take he's gonna use. He's
- 19:39Speaker 1: not trying to do three takes and figure it out later.
- 19:41Speaker 2: Was his editor on set with him, Well, he was editing. Yeah, yeah,
- 19:45Speaker 2: he edits. But then he always has a guy kind
- 19:47Speaker 2: of doing the rough sounds. He would have original score
- 19:52Speaker 2: by John Carpenter when I was doing it with him,
- 19:54Speaker 2: and he would put the original I mean, we would
- 19:57Speaker 2: do the scene and like in a matter of like
- 19:58Speaker 2: ten minutes'd be like, come here, want to show you
- 20:00Speaker 2: something has cut? Yeah right there with John Carpenter's score
- 20:04Speaker 2: right behind it. Yes, I mean he blew my mind.
- 20:07Speaker 1: I mean, there'll be action sequences that I was like,
- 20:09Speaker 1: what you just cut that together? Like we just shot it. Yeah,
- 20:13Speaker 1: but he has such a short hand with his team
- 20:14Speaker 1: and he's crew and all that. Yeah.
- 20:17Speaker 2: You ever you ever get feedback from another actor? Yeah? Yeah,
- 20:24Speaker 2: didn't go well, I can tell in your smile. It
- 20:27Speaker 2: depends on the actor. Yeah, yeah, you know what I mean,
- 20:32Speaker 2: what were some of the you don't have to name
- 20:35Speaker 2: if you don't care to what what what? What were
- 20:37Speaker 2: some of the actor try to direct you? Is that it? Yeah?
- 20:42Speaker 1: Yeah, he wanted me to He wanted me to say
- 20:43Speaker 1: it a certain way so he could say it a
- 20:45Speaker 1: certain way. Yeah, that was that was the goal.
- 20:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 20:48Speaker 1: Yeah. He wanted me to come in at a certain
- 20:50Speaker 1: place where he can come in at a certain place. Yeah,
- 20:53Speaker 1: you know, And I said, uh, you know, gracious. He said, yeah, yeah,
- 21:01Speaker 1: just try it all right, I try it right, you know, man,
- 21:05Speaker 1: just give it a shot.
- 21:06Speaker 2: That was he like, after, like, hey man.
- 21:08Speaker 1: He says, I, you know, you know, will do one
- 21:11Speaker 1: more time? You litten one time? And I was like yeah, yeah,
- 21:15Speaker 1: but you know, it's like some actors are funny, man,
- 21:18Speaker 1: Like they want to sabotage here this ship. You know,
- 21:20Speaker 1: I don't know. Yeah, but I don't know. Have you
- 21:24Speaker 1: had the the.
- 21:26Speaker 2: Yeah, I worked with an actor like that. We both
- 21:28Speaker 2: know him. He'll remain nameless.
- 21:32Speaker 1: I wish this was that podcast.
- 21:33Speaker 2: It just isn't. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, you know, try
- 21:37Speaker 2: to direct, you, try to get you know whatever. No,
- 21:39Speaker 2: but I will tell the story of an actor who's
- 21:42Speaker 2: who's no longer with us. I worked with Alan Rickman
- 21:46Speaker 2: two times. I did two movies with him, and I
- 21:50Speaker 2: did a movie called Bottle Shock with him, and he
- 21:52Speaker 2: was just lovely, lovely, lovely person to work with him.
- 21:56Speaker 2: And I believe his wife's name was Rita, if I'm
- 21:58Speaker 2: not mistaken, most lovely human beings ever. Man and I
- 22:01Speaker 2: had such a wonderful experience with him, And then I
- 22:03Speaker 2: did another movie with him called CBGB, and at first
- 22:09Speaker 2: it started to be kind of the opposite experience. Man
- 22:13Speaker 2: and I didn't know what was happening, and he was
- 22:18Speaker 2: very opinionated about my character and what I was wearing
- 22:23Speaker 2: and the wig I had on, and it was a
- 22:26Speaker 2: very unique, off the wall character. I created this whole
- 22:30Speaker 2: thing and a voice and all this other stuff, and
- 22:32Speaker 2: he was super opinionated about that. And it put me
- 22:36Speaker 2: in a really weird position because I'm like, I usually
- 22:39Speaker 2: tell people like that to f off Man. I can't
- 22:42Speaker 2: do that to Alan Rickman. You know, he's a legend.
- 22:45Speaker 2: I respect him so much. But I can tell that
- 22:48Speaker 2: something was up and I couldn't put my finger on it.
- 22:51Speaker 2: I remember talking to the director about it and I'm like, hey, man,
- 22:54Speaker 2: Alan is like giving me notes and I can tell
- 22:57Speaker 2: in their eyes they're like well, and they didn't want
- 23:00Speaker 2: to tell me what was wrong. And shortly after that,
- 23:04Speaker 2: I discovered that he had cancer. Oh and uh and
- 23:08Speaker 2: he passed away and I was like, oh, that's what
- 23:12Speaker 2: it was. The poor guy was going through to cancer
- 23:16Speaker 2: and uh. And I guess you know some of whatever
- 23:20Speaker 2: was yeah, irritating him was was was coming out through
- 23:25Speaker 2: seeing certain imperfections and what he felt embodied my character
- 23:30Speaker 2: and wasn't afraid to.
- 23:33Speaker 1: I mean, think about how and then and then you
- 23:35Speaker 1: got to act say it again and think about how
- 23:38Speaker 1: toling it is to go through something like that, and
- 23:40Speaker 1: then you say it and just like show your best, you.
- 23:43Speaker 2: Know, yeah, yeah, because I'm like, man, Alan Rickman doesn't
- 23:46Speaker 2: like what I'm doing. Man, it sucks, you know, I
- 23:49Speaker 2: really want to. I thought we were cool. It was
- 23:51Speaker 2: like our second movie together. And then uh and then
- 23:54Speaker 2: and then I'm like, oh that made sense. Man. The
- 23:56Speaker 2: poor guy was just suffering. But but shout out to
- 23:59Speaker 2: to his why and his family. They were just so
- 24:02Speaker 2: so lovely.
- 24:13Speaker 1: It's your house like full of like two hundred different posters.
- 24:18Speaker 2: It could be, it could be. It's funny you say that. Man.
- 24:23Speaker 2: I was going through some stuff the other day and
- 24:24Speaker 2: I was I was finding old posters, like oh yeah, no, no,
- 24:29Speaker 2: you know, my house has no posters of any of
- 24:31Speaker 2: my movies. And even my wife says, well, why don't
- 24:35Speaker 2: you have any? I'm like, I don't know. Like when
- 24:37Speaker 2: the kids were growing up, I just tried to I
- 24:40Speaker 2: just wanted them to grow up normal, you know, so
- 24:43Speaker 2: like I never had any like reference look at me
- 24:46Speaker 2: or movie stuff or like any of that stuff. I
- 24:49Speaker 2: just wanted them to have a normal childhood. The only
- 24:52Speaker 2: thing I have up and I know you make fun
- 24:53Speaker 2: of me sometimes whenever we zoom is you know I
- 24:56Speaker 2: have like trophies up and all that. You know, that's
- 24:59Speaker 2: the only thing I fun you know, like.
- 25:05Speaker 1: Trophies in the back.
- 25:06Speaker 2: Guy, you got quite an impressive show.
- 25:07Speaker 1: Look who's talking. He's talking.
- 25:09Speaker 2: This guy here has a whole shelf of trophies in
- 25:13Speaker 2: his office. I walk in there, I'm looking look at
- 25:15Speaker 2: all the Wilmers.
- 25:16Speaker 1: My my biggest claims are my my Teen Choice Awards.
- 25:23Speaker 1: You know, I think I was the only actor to
- 25:25Speaker 1: win Teen Choice Awards for both Leading Actor and Comedy
- 25:30Speaker 1: and Best side Kick. So there is that's it.
- 25:34Speaker 2: I mean, you're of the I mean, yeah, you're part
- 25:37Speaker 2: of I think that's wonderful because you're part of the culturals.
- 25:40Speaker 2: I guys, the fans.
- 25:41Speaker 1: Definitely, you know, fans definitely voted on Team Vogue and
- 25:46Speaker 1: Team People. They also send in their ballet seventeen. Yeah,
- 25:51Speaker 1: this is before digital voting.
- 25:52Speaker 2: So yeah, I think it's wonderful. Man. And I saw
- 25:55Speaker 2: that poster you have. I mean, you know that that
- 25:57Speaker 2: seventies show poster you have in your office. It's so
- 26:01Speaker 2: I mean it was such a legendary show. Like why
- 26:04Speaker 2: wouldn't you have that in your I think it's wonderful.
- 26:07Speaker 2: I've seen all the stuff you have in your office.
- 26:08Speaker 2: I think it's great. You know.
- 26:10Speaker 1: I like to put up art to reflects. I'm like
- 26:13Speaker 1: the mood and all that stuff.
- 26:14Speaker 2: But what's the most when you go into your office
- 26:18Speaker 2: and you see that or the posters, or what's the
- 26:22Speaker 2: one thing that you look at that means I don't
- 26:26Speaker 2: want to say means the most to you, but you
- 26:28Speaker 2: look at and you go that really made either an
- 26:32Speaker 2: impact in your life or holds a special place in
- 26:34Speaker 2: your heart, or like, what's the thing that you have
- 26:36Speaker 2: in your office right now that.
- 26:38Speaker 1: I have a I have a flag that was folded
- 26:45Speaker 1: and it was presented to me by some of the
- 26:51Speaker 1: armed forces from our work in the USO. And it
- 26:54Speaker 1: was a flag that was flown over Ground zero and
- 26:57Speaker 1: New York. Wow and incredible, and so it's hop in
- 27:01Speaker 1: my office. It's a reminder of the fallen. I have
- 27:05Speaker 1: another flag that was flown over Operation and Freedom in
- 27:09Speaker 1: Iraq and over a comeback zone and then they gave
- 27:13Speaker 1: me that flag too. It was super cool.
- 27:15Speaker 2: Wow.
- 27:15Speaker 1: So those things for me, it's like those are the
- 27:17Speaker 1: ones where I look at that and I'm like WHOA,
- 27:19Speaker 1: Like yeah, it's kind of it's iconic for me. I
- 27:23Speaker 1: love that stuff.
- 27:24Speaker 2: Yeah, what about what a life we lead? Right? Yeah?
- 27:27Speaker 2: I want to know more? What else you got? Let's
- 27:29Speaker 2: see what can I think of? Off the bat. I
- 27:32Speaker 2: have a photo that someone took of me on my
- 27:37Speaker 2: first play when I was thirteen years old. Fourteen, well,
- 27:40Speaker 2: I had turned fourteen.
- 27:41Speaker 1: I had one from high school and I went from
- 27:43Speaker 1: uh before I left at A is wella too.
- 27:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 27:45Speaker 1: I want to show you those two pictures.
- 27:47Speaker 2: And you know, it's crazy, man, I was. I was
- 27:49Speaker 2: fourteen years old, and I remember that moment so visit
- 27:52Speaker 2: so vividly because it was the moment I was like, Oh,
- 27:56Speaker 2: this is what I'm going to do for the rest
- 27:58Speaker 2: of my life. You know. I remember being on stage
- 27:59Speaker 2: and ink and that.
- 28:00Speaker 1: You see that picture, it's kind of like reignited, right, yeah,
- 28:03Speaker 1: just go oh they captured the moment where I decided
- 28:07Speaker 1: what I was going to do.
- 28:08Speaker 2: This is what my life. Yeah yeah yah yeah. What
- 28:11Speaker 2: have you kept any Have you kept any souvenirs for
- 28:15Speaker 2: many of your films or TV shows?
- 28:18Speaker 1: Yeah? Like I have my fans from from Dust till Done,
- 28:21Speaker 1: have my metal fans in a little box in my office.
- 28:24Speaker 1: I have. I have my Summer Cats jersey signed by
- 28:28Speaker 1: the entire cast. Yeah, that's pretty cool. Then I have
- 28:34Speaker 1: what else doing? Oh and I have like probably a
- 28:38Speaker 1: third which is a lot of my character Fez on
- 28:44Speaker 1: that seventies shows wardrobe?
- 28:45Speaker 2: You kept the wardrobe?
- 28:47Speaker 1: I have no way, did you really? Yeah?
- 28:50Speaker 2: Wow, I still fit in some of them.
- 28:52Speaker 1: Sorry not sorry, Yeah.
- 28:55Speaker 2: But you brought the character back right for the ninety shows.
- 28:58Speaker 1: So did you have to where they gave me ninety stuff?
- 29:03Speaker 1: You know, it's a.
- 29:04Speaker 2: That's true, that's true, that's true.
- 29:06Speaker 1: Yeah, but it's crazy Like you open it and you
- 29:08Speaker 1: grab one of the jackets, You're like wow, yeah, right,
- 29:11Speaker 1: like it takes you back because like one of those
- 29:13Speaker 1: artifacts that just takes you back in time. You're like, well, yeah,
- 29:16Speaker 1: get back to that moment.
- 29:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I still have Robert gave me the butterfly knives
- 29:23Speaker 2: that I used in Planet Terror? What else do I
- 29:27Speaker 2: have that.
- 29:30Speaker 1: I have?
- 29:30Speaker 2: Like toys that like fans have made of me in
- 29:33Speaker 2: different projects that they'll send me, which is awesome, Like
- 29:37Speaker 2: you know, you just have like a toy made, you know,
- 29:39Speaker 2: nothing official, something a fan made, you know. I think
- 29:42Speaker 2: that's wonderful. I'm like, wow, you took the time, like
- 29:46Speaker 2: this character moved you that much that you would go
- 29:49Speaker 2: and like make a toy out of this character. You ah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 29:56Speaker 2: that same character in the mirror in the in the mirror.
- 30:00Speaker 1: Yes, sorry, I'm sorry for those I was talking about myself.
- 30:09Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's crazy, that's great.
- 30:11Speaker 1: But listen as we kind of bring it all the
- 30:14Speaker 1: way around, what would be one word of advice that
- 30:21Speaker 1: you could give people who are trying to say, how
- 30:25Speaker 1: do I receive constructive criticism?
- 30:30Speaker 2: And how do you pick.
- 30:31Speaker 1: The ones that you allow in?
- 30:34Speaker 2: I guess the piece of advice that I would give,
- 30:37Speaker 2: right is keep a sense of humility when you're receiving
- 30:43Speaker 2: the criticism, whether it's right or wrong.
- 30:45Speaker 1: Right, right, right, So fifty to fifty way is going
- 30:48Speaker 1: to click?
- 30:49Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah. You have to have a certain filter
- 30:52Speaker 2: of humility to receive it and to digest it and
- 30:55Speaker 2: to process it. And then ultimately you have to follow
- 31:00Speaker 2: like your gut, right, then your gut is going to
- 31:02Speaker 2: sort of regurgitate whatever that thing is eventually. And know
- 31:08Speaker 2: that you're working with other people who expect a certain
- 31:11Speaker 2: something from you and they're not seeing it right. And
- 31:15Speaker 2: that's no knock towards you or your ability and what
- 31:18Speaker 2: you do, whether you're an actor, whether whatever it is
- 31:21Speaker 2: that you do. They're not seeing something right, and you
- 31:23Speaker 2: have to have a certain humility about that it's it's
- 31:25Speaker 2: not that you suck or your work sucks. They're just
- 31:29Speaker 2: not seeing something, and so you have to have the
- 31:31Speaker 2: humility enough to go, well, they're not seeing it, so
- 31:33Speaker 2: let me try to adjust so that I can give
- 31:35Speaker 2: them what they need. What about you? What do you?
- 31:38Speaker 2: How do you? How do you process that? And how
- 31:40Speaker 2: do you.
- 31:41Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean it's very similar. I think you're nailed that.
- 31:43Speaker 1: I think that that's one of the things that you
- 31:45Speaker 1: you you you know, you kind of evolve with, right,
- 31:49Speaker 1: It's I can never evolving situation and how you receive
- 31:52Speaker 1: and how you implement.
- 31:55Speaker 2: You know.
- 31:55Speaker 1: The only thing I could add to that is that criticism.
- 32:02Speaker 1: It's it's almost the wrong word, right, because people have observations.
- 32:09Speaker 1: Those observations come from a very pure, primitive and instinctual place,
- 32:16Speaker 1: and it's a reflection of how they were raised, the
- 32:19Speaker 1: values that they shared, and most importantly, the way they
- 32:22Speaker 1: see life. You mean, like like critics, like a review,
- 32:25Speaker 1: like a bad review. I'm talking about everybody who has
- 32:27Speaker 1: an opinion about your shit.
- 32:29Speaker 2: Okay.
- 32:30Speaker 1: They come from a place where they either are on
- 32:34Speaker 1: the second floor thinking they have a bird side view
- 32:36Speaker 1: and your on your shit, or they just think they've
- 32:39Speaker 1: done it, you know, the same way, and they got
- 32:42Speaker 1: you know whatever, like whatever the configuration is. I think
- 32:45Speaker 1: what I'm trying to say is that you also have
- 32:47Speaker 1: to one you have to consider the source. Yeah, I'm
- 32:53Speaker 1: a strong believer that if somebody has done it before you,
- 32:57Speaker 1: you should listen, somebody hasn't done what you do. Yeah,
- 33:02Speaker 1: it's hard to take in that observation, right. That's where
- 33:07Speaker 1: like if Fredi Rodriguez says, hey, man, I saw you
- 33:10Speaker 1: in that episode.
- 33:10Speaker 2: Honestly that one seen.
- 33:13Speaker 1: I think you left some food on the table, I'd
- 33:14Speaker 1: be like, you look that back, because you're going to
- 33:18Speaker 1: see things based on a trajectory that I not only respect,
- 33:23Speaker 1: but I also understand. You see my artistry like the
- 33:29Speaker 1: matrix and those are the that's the wisdom you want
- 33:32Speaker 1: to seek.
- 33:34Speaker 2: And you don't want to wait.
- 33:35Speaker 1: For people excrazism. You want to open your heart to
- 33:38Speaker 1: that feedback from people you respect. So when you start
- 33:42Speaker 1: a business, you're not going to just hire everybody that's
- 33:44Speaker 1: never done it before, right, You're going to talk to
- 33:46Speaker 1: people that I've done it successfully, right, and they're going
- 33:49Speaker 1: to pave a road for you to actually walk with a.
- 33:52Speaker 2: Coherent plan.
- 33:55Speaker 1: You know. So I think those are the only thing
- 33:56Speaker 1: that I would add to that. I think that it's
- 33:58Speaker 1: super important to just like consider the source. Yeah, and that,
- 34:03Speaker 1: by the way, is also the secret the secret trade
- 34:10Speaker 1: to not ever let it hit you in the heart.
- 34:16Speaker 2: Yeah. Do you feel the same way because you're also
- 34:20Speaker 2: I think you've been talking about your perspective from an actor,
- 34:23Speaker 2: but you're also a business owner, right, You're also a producer.
- 34:26Speaker 2: You also have a company. Do you find that you
- 34:31Speaker 2: process feedback the same way when you're wearing that hat?
- 34:36Speaker 2: And if you do, then give me an example. Has
- 34:40Speaker 2: someone given you a piece of feedback from a producorial
- 34:43Speaker 2: level that you've processed and you've been like, you know what,
- 34:46Speaker 2: you're right, you know, maybe I should pivot this way
- 34:49Speaker 2: or that way. What's been an example that someone has
- 34:52Speaker 2: given you in that regard.
- 34:54Speaker 1: An example that did work. There was a good advisor both.
- 34:59Speaker 1: So great executives tell you, don't worry about who my
- 35:03Speaker 1: favorite writers are. Worry about the writers that are going
- 35:07Speaker 1: to bring your vision for this.
- 35:11Speaker 2: Project, title, idea, script.
- 35:13Speaker 1: Whatever to life in the way that if it succeeds
- 35:18Speaker 1: or if it fails, you can sleep at night.
- 35:22Speaker 2: M hm.
- 35:23Speaker 1: So package your ideas with the voices that share the
- 35:27Speaker 1: passion for the for the vision, right the scope, the story,
- 35:34Speaker 1: and if it sells, you're going to make something that
- 35:38Speaker 1: you're gonna be very proud of, right because it came
- 35:40Speaker 1: from a from a place of authenticity. You're not you're
- 35:43Speaker 1: not compromising with the vision because of a mandate, because
- 35:50Speaker 1: you are beholden to, you know, the short list of
- 35:54Speaker 1: usual suspects that a studio envisions being in business with.
- 35:58Speaker 1: Because sometimes you'll bring voices to the studios or to
- 36:01Speaker 1: the networks that they're like, whoa I just discovered and
- 36:04Speaker 1: new writer. Somebody came and pitched and I never thought
- 36:06Speaker 1: this person could write comedy blah blah blah. Right, so
- 36:09Speaker 1: you always have to kind of like stick to yourround
- 36:11Speaker 1: somebody that was the best criticism, like, because I was
- 36:13Speaker 1: always like, who.
- 36:14Speaker 2: Is the list of writers?
- 36:15Speaker 1: Yeah, so I can bring someone they want to be
- 36:17Speaker 1: in business with because it's going to sell faster or whatever.
- 36:20Speaker 1: The truth is that the show or the movie or
- 36:23Speaker 1: the project whatever is that you're developing, you know, and
- 36:26Speaker 1: it's just for every business that you're going to present
- 36:30Speaker 1: if it has the right plan and they can see
- 36:33Speaker 1: in around that table that everyone in here will have
- 36:38Speaker 1: a piece of the puzzle. Figure it out. That's going
- 36:41Speaker 1: to sell I was gonna get made. So those are
- 36:44Speaker 1: one of the best criticisms because I used to be
- 36:47Speaker 1: so hung up and like, well, who's got for Emmy's right, right?
- 36:51Speaker 2: Or who do you? Who do I think that they
- 36:54Speaker 2: would want? Even if they're they might be slightly wrong
- 36:58Speaker 2: for the vision that I'm trying to all that. Yeah,
- 37:00Speaker 2: that's interesting.
- 37:01Speaker 1: Yeah, And I think the other one said I feel
- 37:03Speaker 1: like I take with a grain of salt and I
- 37:06Speaker 1: consider only out of respect. It's the worst of advice
- 37:09Speaker 1: to sound like, you know, you know who you need
- 37:13Speaker 1: to get that's the star. Yeah, because every decade is
- 37:20Speaker 1: a short list of five individuals that are worth ten
- 37:23Speaker 1: million dollars the price tag and you're like, okay, you
- 37:26Speaker 1: want me to go to yeah, you know X to
- 37:30Speaker 1: basically financed. Oh, that's the movie you're gonna finance. Of
- 37:34Speaker 1: course you're going to finance that movie. If it was
- 37:36Speaker 1: that easy, why didn't you make a movie with them?
- 37:38Speaker 2: Right?
- 37:39Speaker 1: So it's like you're giving me advice based on like yeah,
- 37:41Speaker 1: no ship, Like if I get Tom Cruise attached to
- 37:44Speaker 1: my movie, it will get financed Leo DiCaprio. Yeah, yah,
- 37:48Speaker 1: that's what you want. That's that's where you want me
- 37:50Speaker 1: to go for your ten million dollars. Yeah, yeah, Okay,
- 37:52Speaker 1: that's great. Go let me go get So that's the
- 37:55Speaker 1: type of stuff it's just said, you know, and that
- 37:57Speaker 1: and how to self translate to life. Right, you know,
- 38:01Speaker 1: surround yourself with individuals. This is the first Advisorich she
- 38:04Speaker 1: does work, right, Surround yourself with individuals that them make
- 38:08Speaker 1: your attempt to add your dream better or give you
- 38:11Speaker 1: proximity at actually the expertise you need for it to
- 38:16Speaker 1: actually be successful. And then the other way around is
- 38:22Speaker 1: you know, if they if they're if they're going to
- 38:25Speaker 1: tell you how to do it, have they done it before?
- 38:29Speaker 1: Because if they haven't, you've got to consider that source.
- 38:35Speaker 2: Interesting. Yeah. Well, to all the people out there, whether
- 38:39Speaker 2: you're an actor, whether you're a producer, whether you're working
- 38:42Speaker 2: at McDonald's, whatever it is that you're doing, be free,
- 38:47Speaker 2: be free, be open to criticism, don't take it personal,
- 38:54Speaker 2: and and have a process of humility and and and
- 38:58Speaker 2: filtering the information for your betterment. Right.
