- 0:00Believe the Mets are going to give him.
- 0:01A significant They're going to have a ton of money to spend.
- 0:04Why not put it in one of the top three offensive?
- 0:07Players in the league, we're going to be looking at Aaron.
- 0:17Judge and saying that he can't win the big game.
- 0:19Michael Jordan. Said I.
- 0:21Played 82 games. You don't see LeBron doing that
- 0:24a game where you got to go before.
- 0:27I told you, giant feet, Saquon Parker at this.
- 1:39Wow, welcome. We are back with another episode
- 1:45of Jabba in the Mouth. No, it's not Errol that you're
- 1:48listening to. It's me, Aaron Fishman, our
- 1:51executive producer, normally filling in as host.
- 1:54Tonight, we still got Speedy PD and the one and only Jabba
- 1:58Chamberlain live on location out in Nebraska, the site of the
- 2:03College World Series. We're going to get into Game 6.
- 2:06Tips off at 8:30 between the Pacers and the OKC Thunder.
- 2:10Looks like Halliburton. We'll play.
- 2:11We'll get into that in just a moment.
- 2:14We're going to recap the Stanley Cup Finals ended kind of how we
- 2:18expected, right guys? It was kind of a blow out.
- 2:21The Panthers kind of took their time, I guess in that series,
- 2:26wearing them down, grinding them away. 51V.
- 2:30We'll get into the recap of the back-to-back champion Florida
- 2:34Panthers. We got to talk about the Lakers
- 2:36being sold to the owner of the Dodgers for $10 billion.
- 2:42The largest sale that's ever happened in the history of
- 2:46professional sports kind of came out of nowhere to a lot of us.
- 2:50We're going to hear, I'm sure over the next few days, a bunch
- 2:53more about that story. We're going to talk some NFL
- 2:55news. We're going to talk some
- 2:57baseball news. We're going to get into a little
- 2:59bit of the top players in baseball.
- 3:01We're almost at the halfway point of the season.
- 3:03We'll get there next week. So I created a little all all
- 3:06MLB team as if like we were in the NFL.
- 3:09So we're going to talk about that debate some of these guys
- 3:11later on tonight. We got one thing I wanted to
- 3:14talk about before we get into everything.
- 3:17I was just coaching this morning, some football.
- 3:19I coach offensive and defensive line up by West Point.
- 3:23It was the first hot day of the year.
- 3:24We got up to around 90. We ended up coming off the field
- 3:27at noon. We didn't even get to, you know,
- 3:31the team, offense and defense that we wanted to run.
- 3:33It just was too hot. I've lived in Florida though,
- 3:38and in Florida they don't come off the field for any reason.
- 3:42I've seen it and now Java. You guys have spring training
- 3:45down in Tampa. It gets hot starting in April in
- 3:49Tampa. I what we have these rules about
- 3:52real feel if it if it the real feel is over.
- 3:55I think 88, like you got to start looking at it very
- 3:59carefully. If it gets to 95, you can't be
- 4:01on the field. I thought it was a real field of
- 4:0395 every day for three months when I lived in Tampa when we
- 4:06got to the summer. Have you ever had any rules
- 4:09where you had to come off the field?
- 4:10What? What was it like when you
- 4:11played? No, not not necessarily as as.
- 4:16I guess temperature wise it was always more so rain than
- 4:21anything else. There were times I remember I
- 4:25was charting and I would have to wear an undershirt just so I
- 4:30didn't sweat through my original shirt.
- 4:34And so yeah, there was, there was never, never a time Like
- 4:38we're in excessive heat Warning right now for the College World
- 4:44Series right now. And it's supposed to be 104
- 4:47tomorrow. 100 and 199 and only know what it is on the field
- 4:54obviously but yeah, I I guess I've never never experienced it
- 5:01from like that perspective of like if it's that hot on the
- 5:07field like you're not going to you know basically play the
- 5:11game. So I don't I don't know how it's
- 5:14going to go. I'm obviously we have here in
- 5:17Omaha where we're on site at Addie's at one O 1 N 10th St.
- 5:24and covering College World Series.
- 5:26But I, I don't, I don't think I've ever been in that situation
- 5:30where it's we didn't play because it was too hot.
- 5:33I've had delays because the umpires were getting ready, but
- 5:39I've never had one where like we're ready to get on the field
- 5:42and and do that stuff. So yeah, I don't, I don't know
- 5:46if I've I've ever experienced that.
- 5:48Even like youth sports when you're growing up, because I
- 5:50know when I was a kid they didn't have that stuff up in the
- 5:52Northeast, but I think it's changed.
- 5:55I think it might just be a Northeast thing.
- 5:57It might be a little bit. Well, people are getting softer
- 6:01too. It's like we played through a
- 6:04lot. This is what?
- 6:04I wanted to get to. We played through a lot more
- 6:07stuff and things that we did back then than they do now.
- 6:14So and I don't know if that's necessarily a generational thing
- 6:18or, or what is happening in that.
- 6:22You've obviously been a coach longer than I have and I only
- 6:25coached Carter for a couple of years, but I never, I can never
- 6:33recall. And I think it's just kind of
- 6:35how they've kind of just switched generations and things
- 6:38that have like kind of transitioned to like we have to
- 6:42take care of them better. It's like, are you really taking
- 6:45care of them? You know, there's a lot of ways
- 6:48to take care of kids on the football field.
- 6:50And I want to get into that in a second or, you know, in any
- 6:53field because I think of a guy. The reason why they do it, and
- 6:56it's not just because there's one case, but the one that I
- 6:59always remember because he was such a prominent player, speedy
- 7:02was Corey Stringer was this great tackle for the Vikings
- 7:06years ago, and he dropped dead of heatstroke.
- 7:08Just like working out in preseason doing drills.
- 7:13I mean, we've had, oh, my God, was it Kendall Simmons?
- 7:16Come on. The former Pittsburgh Steelers
- 7:19guard, he was fantastic. And when he came on and he told
- 7:22us about he has type 1 diabetes and he found out because he
- 7:25almost dropped dead in preseason because he was running drills
- 7:28and they said he had a blood sugar around 800 something,
- 7:30which I thought meant you were dead already.
- 7:32Because I'm type 1 diabetic in the same way as him.
- 7:36And I can't even imagine just all the equipment and stuff that
- 7:39we have like he can't wear a pump.
- 7:41So he's just doing math all day, trying to make sure that he has
- 7:46enough energy to get through the next drive, you know?
- 7:49Remember the and he still played.
- 7:51Remember the Maryland coach scandal too from like 2019 as
- 7:54well. They were overworking those
- 7:56players in the heat like crazy. That's right.
- 7:59And that was the. Was that the trainer that was an
- 8:01Urban Meyer disciple? Yeah, if I'm not mistaken.
- 8:04Yeah. Well when did, when did it
- 8:06change fish for you? Because obviously being a
- 8:08football coach when did like because I remember 2 days were
- 8:12such a big thing. So I remember when I played, it
- 8:15was 3 a day. Jabba.
- 8:17We, we would do it where we'd get there at six and we wouldn't
- 8:20leave till around 6:00. But the way the coaches thought
- 8:23it was smarter to have like a special teams segment in the
- 8:27middle of the day and have like 1 like some of the kids do doing
- 8:31skill stuff while the other group lifted and then the other
- 8:33group, you know, and they'd alternate.
- 8:35We could go throw them in the pool if it was really, really
- 8:37hot school at a pool when I was over there.
- 8:40But we ended up having these like the wet bulb readings.
- 8:43I don't know if you ever heard of it, but like there's a
- 8:45certain, it's like this. It looks like a kids science
- 8:48project to be honest with you, but it's how you tell what the
- 8:51real feel is. And you can't.
- 8:54There's like certain guidelines, at least in New York State,
- 8:57where you just got to pull the kids off the field.
- 8:58You have to go inside. We try to, when it's like that,
- 9:02you try to get the kids on the chalkboard, but just imagine
- 9:04it's 95° or 100° and they put you in a classroom and you're a
- 9:09teenager and we're like, pay attention.
- 9:12You need to learn this. The odds of that happening are,
- 9:15you know, you're just banging your head into the wall.
- 9:17And I don't think I ever got anything done as a coach in
- 9:20those sessions. But I wanted to say, you know,
- 9:24you hear a lot of X's and O's and coaches, you know, that have
- 9:27the best system, the Shanahan system in the NFL or you know,
- 9:32the West Coast in years ago or you know, there's a few others
- 9:36to be. I'm sure you can name drop some
- 9:38of them. But it's that's not really what
- 9:41coaching is about to me and job. I think you can attest to this.
- 9:44Your best coaches are the guys who knew your body mechanics,
- 9:48the guy that can look at you and said you don't look right right
- 9:52now. What's going on?
- 9:53You're right just from how you threw a ball.
- 9:57That's what a coach does. And I want to tell a little
- 9:59story about one of my my favorite players I ever had
- 10:02coaching. This is a year we were playoff
- 10:04team kind of out of nowhere, kind of got screwed over in our
- 10:07seating, but we were we were really good team that year.
- 10:09I think we finished eight and two beat our cross town rivalry
- 10:12hadn't beat in 31 years. And a lot of those because of
- 10:15the kid I called the big cat. We all called him the big cat.
- 10:17It's a great name. He was just like 6-1, maybe not
- 10:20even 61, but he was 6. Let's call him 6/1, 325 and he
- 10:25was a hoss. But he I had him for four years
- 10:29and he was not good. His first two years he was too
- 10:31big and he couldn't get out of his own way.
- 10:33And we'd always try to get him into a stance that would work
- 10:36for him, that he can get out of. And that's the biggest problem
- 10:38in football, especially when you have kids that are a little bit
- 10:41overweight. You can't, you just can't
- 10:44Speedy. I don't know if you know this,
- 10:45but like, you can't just get a kid to be athletic overnight.
- 10:48It takes years and years of work.
- 10:50Yeah, if it was that, if that was, if it was that easy, there
- 10:52weren't, We wouldn't be talking about all these NFL draft busts.
- 10:56I mean, maybe in pickleball, but I don't know, you know, it's, I
- 10:59don't know, it seems like a lot of guys pick up pickleball
- 11:01pretty. Quick Yeah, we'll have to.
- 11:02We'll have to ask our friend Mr. Gronkowski next time he comes on
- 11:05the show. Stop pickleball player.
- 11:07Probably could, but to wrap this up, the reason I bring him up is
- 11:10one he had a really he had like a weird looking elbow Jabba and
- 11:15he was apparently I talked to him about it because he couldn't
- 11:17get down in his stance. And then I looked at him and was
- 11:19like, maybe we should change his stance to something specific for
- 11:22him because his arm, one arm was like an inch and a half longer
- 11:25than the other because he had dislocated his elbow when he was
- 11:28like 18 months old or something like that.
- 11:30And it never healed correctly and they never fixed it.
- 11:32So when he went down in a three-point stance, he could
- 11:34only do it one way. So we switched it up and we told
- 11:38him to go into a four point stance and we told him to press
- 11:40his arm in a certain angle and we allowed him to like turn just
- 11:43a little slightly, maybe like created a stance for him and he
- 11:46became an all section player. He was incredible.
- 11:50And he teams just couldn't handle it.
- 11:53And that has nothing to do with a single play call.
- 11:57It has nothing to do with anything.
- 12:00It was me having a relationship with a kid and trying to figure
- 12:04out how to make him like the most successful he could be.
- 12:08And I think a lot of people, especially when we are on a
- 12:10sports show, it's very easy to kill coaches.
- 12:13It's very easy. But you.
- 12:15Don't know they're the first scapegoat because it's not
- 12:19necessarily the players, it's always usually the coach that
- 12:22ends up getting pushed out. Yeah, well, look, it's you're
- 12:27pointing whenever you point fingers, you got three more
- 12:30pointing right back at your face, you know, and you end up
- 12:33usually seeing that with coaching in the professionals
- 12:37ranks and sometimes in high school, especially in like
- 12:39Texas, in those places, it's very serious.
- 12:42But it's all about wins and losses.
- 12:43You don't realize there are a lot of people that can impact
- 12:45your life that are are just working on you.
- 12:49And I I think like your position coaches are you talk to any
- 12:54players, they're going to tell you about their position coaches
- 12:56first. I guarantee you, you're going to
- 12:58tell me about your pitching coach, Jabba, when you were
- 13:01younger that influenced you, you know, maybe it was your head
- 13:04coach too, but you know, or your manager as well.
- 13:06But I guarantee you it's that guy because that's the real
- 13:11coach. Those are the guys you want on
- 13:13your staff. Those are the guys you want to
- 13:15work with as a coach, guys that pay attention and be like, you
- 13:18know what? He doesn't look right.
- 13:20He played lacrosse last night. He's going to overtrain if we
- 13:22push him too hard today. We don't want him to get hurt.
- 13:25But Fish, do you think about this too as a coach too, like,
- 13:28and I always ask people that we bring on where it's like if if
- 13:35you're a multi sport athlete, like as a coach, do you try to
- 13:39manage that as well? So you try to build
- 13:43relationships with the other sports coaches is really what
- 13:46you do like for football at the pipeline always used to be if
- 13:50you're doing football, you're doing wrestling in the winter,
- 13:53right? If you're not a wrestler, you're
- 13:55probably one of the our receivers and you're playing
- 13:57basketball. And if you're not that and
- 14:00you're an offensive lineman, you're throwing the shot put.
- 14:02You know, like we want you doing other sports.
- 14:05We don't want you just in the weight room.
- 14:06You're not training other muscles.
- 14:08You're not becoming, you know, more improving your athletic
- 14:12acuity. That might be the best way to
- 14:14put it. You know, Steve Nash, I always
- 14:16like to bring up Steve Nash was a great soccer player or loves
- 14:19playing soccer. You can see how he sees the
- 14:22basketball game similarly to a great soccer player like Messi,
- 14:26where he's looking for the angles, looking for the
- 14:28triangles, looking for the different types of ways to do
- 14:32that, which. Is one of the hardest things to
- 14:33do the way they curve the soccer ball like that on the set place.
- 14:37Well, that that aside, just like the mental side of the game,
- 14:40learning different games, having different muscle muscles do
- 14:44different activities, not just doing the same thing until
- 14:47you're at a point where I would say shouldn't be happen until
- 14:50junior year high school for most people really shouldn't you
- 14:53should prop. I mean, football, you might want
- 14:55to stop a little earlier just for safety reasons, but you
- 14:58should be playing a lot of stuff until you get to around 1617.
- 15:02Then if you're going to be a real prospect, people will, you
- 15:05will know at that point you will know.
- 15:08But everyone's parents think their kid is going to be a
- 15:12professional player at nine years old and it's.
- 15:13Great. So you said 1617 and my my son's
- 15:17obviously going to be a sophomore in college.
- 15:20Like, so do you, do you honestly like, do you think that like
- 15:23that 1617 realm or do you think before, because there's so many,
- 15:30there's so many kids now sports specific on what they do?
- 15:35And you've obviously seen him more as a coach than I ever have
- 15:39because I always wanted Carter to play basketball.
- 15:42He played tennis and obviously baseball.
- 15:45But do you think it is there an age where you can kind of get to
- 15:53that point where you're like, yeah, we tried you through
- 15:56everything, we figure out what you're good at, but what like
- 16:00what direction do we go? I think like at the end of your
- 16:03sophomore year of high school, like you're probably now
- 16:07physically at a point where we're going to be able to
- 16:09project what you're going to look like and how your body is
- 16:12going to tend to 1 sport or the other a little bit better.
- 16:14I hate the specialization. I don't like know this.
- 16:19You know, the pie in the sky of being a Pro is one thing.
- 16:21That's a whole other story. But what you're doing to the kid
- 16:25health wise, we see all the Tommy John injuries.
- 16:28We see it. We don't need to be playing fall
- 16:31ball, winter ball and having a full season and and then going
- 16:36to clinics and then being on the circuit for all the clinics and
- 16:39never giving your arm a rest, never training your arm to do
- 16:42different activities. So it's just the same motion
- 16:45that's being worn on that old UCL and that old flexor tendon
- 16:49Java, You know, that's, that's what, that's what.
- 16:52It is like flexor strain. We know what it is and that, but
- 16:57that's the thing too. It's like, and you've been able
- 17:01to coach some some good athletes and it's I always bring up the
- 17:07Christian McCaffrey article and he's like, I am the best
- 17:11football player for what I do because I ran track, I played
- 17:15basketball, I did those things and like Carter playing tennis
- 17:20and playing basketball, like I never was good at any of that.
- 17:26I also didn't do the other stuff but for him and made him better.
- 17:32And my son is a better athlete than I am.
- 17:36Yeah. Did I play a long time in the
- 17:38big leagues? Yes, I did.
- 17:41But he's a better athlete because he did more stuff
- 17:45because I wasn't good at all that.
- 17:48And that's what's made him great and what's allowed him to
- 17:52advance at the next level and see these things.
- 17:56And so I'm just it just I hate when it gets down to that point.
- 18:01And you know, when we talk about it and it's like, you know, we
- 18:05were talking about Jackson job the other day.
- 18:09It's just does he go through that?
- 18:13If he didn't do all the circuits and didn't fall ball, winter
- 18:17ball, all the other, Do we know that answer?
- 18:20No, we don't know, because nobody ever knows.
- 18:24I mean, what if he spent time dribbling a basketball and
- 18:27playing man defense and getting low and.
- 18:30Being it's, it's going to help him in every way.
- 18:34Like tennis was unbelievable for Carter because it was footwork
- 18:39and like that was that was the funnest.
- 18:41That was the funnest season for me as a father because
- 18:45basketball was the only season that I could see Carter every
- 18:50year because that was my offseason.
- 18:53So I didn't get to see him a lot for baseball other than watching
- 18:56on on Game Changer and all the other stuff.
- 19:00But then tennis, I got to watch him just be an athlete.
- 19:06But then it was like now he he learned how to and he had great
- 19:12coaches. They were young kids and he
- 19:14vibed with them very, very well. But it made him so much better
- 19:20on the basketball court. It made him so much better at
- 19:22shortstop. It made him so much better
- 19:26because those are things that you learn innately because it's
- 19:31not like you're teaching them. Because I don't know shit about
- 19:35it. So I can't do that.
- 19:39But he can go to a trainer and he's been doing that.
- 19:41But I just feel like it's so important for them because it,
- 19:46it allows them to take rest off their body in certain aspects,
- 19:53especially throwing, because it's the most awkward thing.
- 19:57It's it's why you look at I loved watching the Women's
- 20:01College World Series in softball.
- 20:03But it's why they can throw every game because that's a
- 20:06natural motion of your arm. Yeah, throwing a baseball is
- 20:09not. You know, Speedy, I wanted to
- 20:12ask you, do you, because that's my theory that all of this
- 20:15specialization and non-stop throwing is why we have all
- 20:18these injuries, not so much that everyone's throwing harder.
- 20:21You hear some people say that. I wanted to hear your take, why
- 20:24you think those injuries are? Happening, Yeah.
- 20:25I think for certain sports, I think it can be that way because
- 20:28I think something that involves a lot of precision and when it
- 20:32comes to aiming, obviously a quarterback in football,
- 20:35obviously pitching in baseball, something that involves a lot of
- 20:37aiming, it definitely could be. And it's interesting you brought
- 20:40up tennis. I forget which one of our
- 20:41baseball guests brought it up years ago that he was mentioning
- 20:45tennis as a good offseason training for him in baseball
- 20:49because it's not as much the wear and tear, but it's still
- 20:51like getting your arms moving in a sense.
- 20:56And so it's always good to have like a, I guess in baseball, a
- 21:00precision sport like that in more of a contact sport, just
- 21:04something to keep you endurance wise.
- 21:05And that's the same thing they were mentioning with with
- 21:07college a few weeks ago with, with the whole rule change, like
- 21:10because they're such in the grind of just the one sport.
- 21:13But it's sometimes good to have a a rec league or something to
- 21:16change it up if you're a college athlete.
- 21:19So I think there are are layers to it.
- 21:21I don't think it's everything to do with the injuries, but I
- 21:23think it's definitely a lot to do with it when it comes to, I
- 21:25guess, more of the precision sports.
- 21:28You know, I mean, certain sports like hockey, you kind of have to
- 21:30be skating and doing that stuff most of the year round.
- 21:33Every once in a while I get a hockey kid on the football team
- 21:35and we were so ecstatic to have him because we knew it was like
- 21:38very rare that that would happen.
- 21:40The kid had to love football and he was one of the best kids I
- 21:42ever had for sure. But you know, had an injury from
- 21:45overtraining. Yeah, I just want to move on.
- 21:47Before we move on, I want to read this comment here from Bill
- 21:49P Is one of our new fans after him playing all those different
- 21:52sports, 4 different sports, he chose baseball and tennis.
- 21:55But I get, yeah, playing casually for some of the others
- 21:58for those sports are going to be important for I guess just not
- 22:02having to wear your arm out or wear your wear your body out one
- 22:05different way. Well, I got I got a lot of
- 22:08coaching stories job and I think we're gonna get some more
- 22:11especially after our guest job. You're gonna have some free
- 22:13reign to get in some real cool youth, you know, College World
- 22:17Series experience cuz it's been 20 years since you.
- 22:20You're a famous run in 2005. Make make me feel older.
- 22:24We're the same age job. Love you.
- 22:26We're the exact same age bro. Love you buddy.
- 22:30But you know, there's another guy as far as coaching, he's got
- 22:34his work cut out for him in about 35 minutes in the tip off
- 22:38tonight. Yes, I'm talking about Rick
- 22:40Carlisle because the Pacers are facing elimination tonight in
- 22:43game six at home versus the OK C Thunder after Halliburton
- 22:48completely disappeared in Game 5.
- 22:50The Thunder beat the Pacers 120 to one O 9 in game five in the
- 22:53NBA Finals, taking a three two series lead.
- 22:56Jalen Williams put up 40 points in Game 5, was the 5th youngest
- 23:01player in NBA history with a 40 point NBA Finals game.
- 23:06He's had also 25 points, 5 rebounds in three straight
- 23:09Finals game. The first young player younger
- 23:12than 25 to do that since the big Aristotle himself, Shaquille
- 23:15O'Neal, Shay Gil just. Alexander also had a double
- 23:18double with 31 points and 10 assists and scored over 30 and
- 23:21four of the five finals games. Shay and Jalen have scored 291
- 23:25points combined, 4th in NBA history for a duo in the first
- 23:29five games. A lot of stats, speedy, all
- 23:30impressive. I should maybe gave you the six
- 23:32pack on this one for stats, but I'll say there's the big thing
- 23:35in this game is Tyrese Halliburton.
- 23:38Tyrese Halliburton suffered a right cash strain in Game 5, was
- 23:42limited throughout the game. He had four points in 34
- 23:45minutes. He tweaked his leg driving to
- 23:47the hoop against Chet Holmgren in the first quarter.
- 23:49Didn't hit a single field field goal until I guess.
- 23:53I don't think he hit one all game.
- 23:54No, it was only straight throws. Just foul shots for the four
- 23:57points. Didn't hit a shot in Game 5.
- 24:00Shamsharania said that Mac on the McAfee show that Halliburton
- 24:03is expected to play and yes, that is correct.
- 24:06He is active for tonight's game. They're not going to keep that
- 24:09guy away from playing. Would have been a nice excuse
- 24:12though, right? We lost because, you know,
- 24:16Tyrese got hurt. We could have won.
- 24:18You know, we were just as good as them.
- 24:21We were right there. I don't know, man, I don't know.
- 24:25I think that Thunder team really, really have just
- 24:30scratching the surface. We may be seeing the beginning
- 24:33of the dynasty. Think about how young everyone
- 24:35is on this team. Let's start with with Jalen.
- 24:40Jalen Williams putting up as the second guy as the second guy
- 24:45putting up 40 points. That's impressive man.
- 24:50They they didn't have another creator like him last.
- 24:54I mean at any point with shady illicit Alexander because he
- 24:57hadn't come into his own yet. I think it's it's fair to say
- 25:01Jalen Williams is real and, and he ain't going nowhere.
- 25:05He's absolutely one of the best that we're seeing right now.
- 25:09And some people are comparing him.
- 25:11And I want to hear your take on this, comparing Jalen Williams
- 25:15to an Arrow's favorites, Scottie Pippen.
- 25:20Think about this for a second. Scottie Pippen was a relative
- 25:22unknown coming out of out of high school.
- 25:25He shot up in height, went from being a guard to being a
- 25:29forward. So he had the handle of a guard
- 25:32and we know he became an all defensive player.
- 25:34He's an all NBA player. He was one of the top 50 players
- 25:37back when they did it in the 90s.
- 25:39I wouldn't say he's top 50 now, but he's definitely way close to
- 25:43that. He's maybe he's in a fringe.
- 25:44I'm Speedy. I don't know, maybe we could
- 25:45talk about that. Errol, we'll probably say he's
- 25:47higher than that, but he's close, right?
- 25:50He's close. Where do you say see this guy?
- 25:55Could he be the Pippin to chase Jordan Speedy?
- 25:59If he scores to the higher volume, because I don't think we
- 26:03were thinking him ever as like the Super high scoring type
- 26:06because he did everything else so fundamentally well.
- 26:09And the Thunder have built enough depth where there's not
- 26:11like you don't really have to force anyone to be a second
- 26:14scorer. Like you've seen with these
- 26:16other these other teams that have won championships recently.
- 26:18Like like take a team like the Milwaukee Bucks, like if Chris
- 26:22Middleton or Drew Holiday wasn't good enough as a second scorer,
- 26:25like do they win the championship with Giannis being
- 26:28the number one guy? If Jamal Murray doesn't score
- 26:31enough as the second scorer with the Nuggets, just do they win an
- 26:34NBA title that same way or even have the playoff success they
- 26:37have. Like if he does that
- 26:39consistently enough with his defensive prowess and his
- 26:42well-rounded game, yes, it's possible to to get to that
- 26:45level. I don't think OK C though is
- 26:47built to rely on that right now. And it's not really a question
- 26:50that we have to impulsively have because right now they're up
- 26:533:00 to 2:00. And if Jalen Williams has a let
- 26:56down spot, as long as somebody else steps up in that role, then
- 27:00you're not going to think of all right, is Jalen Williams and
- 27:03going to be another #2 option that could be a Scottie Pippen
- 27:06type long term or even just to compare in this generation one
- 27:10of those superstar players of this.
- 27:12Generation really, that's kind of what we talked about.
- 27:14It's like those second-half guys, other than the superstars
- 27:19stepping up and in getting in that realm.
- 27:23Yeah. And that's what I'm saying.
- 27:24How? Often how often do you have a
- 27:26team that's this well built where you don't have to rely on
- 27:28that obvious second guy and that's where I think right now I
- 27:32think you could definitely do that with Jalen Williams because
- 27:35chat holder and it took a little while for him to get going in
- 27:37this series offensively. And I think Jalen Williams has
- 27:41kept them even in the games they were struggling in in game three
- 27:44kept them in those games with his scoring prowess and hit the
- 27:48way he's played defense. It's always been great.
- 27:49So I again, I I just don't think OK C that's always the cliche
- 27:53with NBANBA. Fans want to say, oh, who's
- 27:55whose team is it? Is it this guy or it's going to
- 27:57take over a game? I don't think OK C is built like
- 28:00that. Like I think you're now seeing,
- 28:02I think probably I wouldn't say the I wouldn't say the Nuggets
- 28:07were necessarily like that, but the Celtics last year and then
- 28:10the the Thunder this year, like they have so many different
- 28:13options and ways to win. You can go to and Shay's taking
- 28:17over the the playoffs, no doubt like he's the best player, but
- 28:20like him, them rotating a second option is still a really good
- 28:24thing for any team to have to be able to game plan against.
- 28:27It's really hard to do. And so if Jalen Williams does
- 28:30take over the scoring from that volume perspective to another
- 28:32level, yeah, you probably are on to something with that fish.
- 28:35But right now the OKC doesn't need to do that because they
- 28:38have so many other guys that they can go to.
- 28:41You know, when I think of Pippin, I don't think of scoring
- 28:44really. I think of secondary scoring,
- 28:46but defense, right? And just locked down defense and
- 28:50then just being the perfect facilitator of the ball to do
- 28:54exactly what's supposed to be right on the play.
- 28:56Jalen Williams is playing like that.
- 28:58It's hard to say he's not playing like that.
- 29:00Now, obviously he doesn't have the same like, length that
- 29:02Pippin had. Perhaps he might be a little bit
- 29:05better. Ball handler might be a little
- 29:06bit better, but you know, with some of those offensive moves, I
- 29:09mean, he has that Jalen Brunson turn around.
- 29:12You know, I, I love watching that, you know, that makes me
- 29:14very reminiscent of Brunson. Makes me wonder what he would
- 29:17have done in this series. But alas, that's not going to be
- 29:19something we can answer. Well, but but fish to fish to
- 29:23your point too, it's like when you have that basically, I mean
- 29:29for lack of a better term, like in your back pocket that he can
- 29:33he can do those things. Yeah, I agree.
- 29:36He's he's not as long as Pippin and he didn't, I wouldn't say
- 29:43didn't score like Pippin, but he didn't defend like Pippin.
- 29:47Few have. Yeah, very few have and there's
- 29:52been very few that have been in Jordan and Pippin in the aspect
- 29:55of what they do. And I, I love, I love a
- 29:58reference that they did when they were getting Tony KU coach
- 30:04and they went and played him and he was like, I got him first
- 30:07half, you got him second-half and Tony Kukoch scored seven
- 30:11points and it was like, this is what I'm going to do.
- 30:15I just think with with this team too, I think they they have
- 30:21scores and they have a little bit of length, not necessarily
- 30:27as as much as the others, but I think they're going to.
- 30:33I would love to see Game 7. Don't get me wrong, I love I I
- 30:37love elimination games. I love, I love pay end all meets
- 30:41all games. I love those.
- 30:43I love them. But you know what's going to
- 30:45happen. I know.
- 30:46But we know what's going to happen in this time.
- 30:48Let's stop pretending that this game is going to be close.
- 30:51They're going to hunt Halliburton every series, every
- 30:55possession, rather down the court, every single one.
- 30:58They're going after him on defense.
- 31:01It doesn't matter if he makes a single.
- 31:02Step. Well, so do do you think too at
- 31:04this point, too? Now you got TJ McConnell that's
- 31:08going to step up? Have to.
- 31:10You're going to need you don't have a random bench player it.
- 31:13Wasn't McConnell at the end though?
- 31:14Speedy in Game 5, right? It was close In game five, it
- 31:17was a it was A1 possession game with about 8 minutes left,
- 31:20right. What happens?
- 31:23They give the ball more to Nemhard and Nemhard.
- 31:29Look, I like the defense, like he played really good defense on
- 31:31Jaylen Brunson. But in that Knick series as
- 31:34well, he is a butcher on the offensive side.
- 31:36You cannot have him as a ball handler and decision maker.
- 31:40It's like when the Knicks use Miles McBride as a point guard.
- 31:45He just sometimes dribbles into traffic and throws the ball
- 31:47away. And against OKC, they murdered
- 31:50them at the end of the fourth quarter.
- 31:52We already watched the highlights.
- 31:53That was all in the fourth quarterback to back-to-back to
- 31:56back place basically. Not exactly, but within like 3
- 31:59minutes. It was devastating and it was
- 32:01just bad offensive basketball and that's why they need
- 32:05Taliburden to make those correct decisions.
- 32:07Nemhart really shouldn't be in charge of that much of the
- 32:10offense. I think, you know, look,
- 32:12Carlisle is a masterful coach, maybe the best coach in the NBA
- 32:17this year. The way that he's coached, at
- 32:19least in the play offs. It's hard to argue he's not
- 32:21right. You know, I don't think that you
- 32:23can say anything about what he did against what's his face, who
- 32:29won the coach of the year, Cleveland Kenny Atkinson shut
- 32:33them down right away. Got Tom Thibodeau to lose his
- 32:36job. He was out coached so badly.
- 32:39I mean, think about that for a second.
- 32:40How good of a coaching job he's done.
- 32:43Maybe he has something for him this game.
- 32:44But if they don't have Halliburton at full speed,
- 32:48they're going. To I don't I don't think he's
- 32:50going to be full speed anyways. If you, if you get him like
- 32:53listening to, you know, all the analysts, however you want to
- 32:59say it, if you get him at 80%, then he's got to play right.
- 33:05And who knows how bad it is. Like, I know with like we played
- 33:10through injuries and, and we've talked about this before.
- 33:12It's like when you get to this point, it's like you got to play
- 33:15through, you got to play through some stuff, right.
- 33:19But if it's that bad, how like how many minutes is he going to
- 33:23get? Is he going to try play?
- 33:24Is he going to be productive or not?
- 33:25And. What type of role will he be in?
- 33:27Is the other question like? What is I?
- 33:29Agree. What is I?
- 33:30Agree. Obviously, obviously he's going
- 33:33to play and not be used as a decoy.
- 33:34It's not going to be thought of that way.
- 33:35It's just going to be, is he going to be more of a spacing
- 33:39guy to create shots for others? And that's why I'm saying two of
- 33:42those random bench players for Indiana, whether it's the
- 33:45combination of Obi Toppin like you were saying, Java,
- 33:47McConnell, he had a nice Game 5. Is it the combination of Nemhart
- 33:52and Nesmith bouncing back? Is it Obi Toppin playing like
- 33:55you did in game one like which which you're going to need at
- 33:58least two out of those five players to be?
- 34:02They got they got options though, right?
- 34:04They're going to need guys that have done it.
- 34:06They're going to. Need two of those.
- 34:07Guys get 15, speedy. We've already seen him do it in
- 34:10the series, get in the Eastern Conference Finals.
- 34:13Most Valuable Player. Siakam is able to get over 40
- 34:17points on his own. He can.
- 34:19He's that good and he's been good at times in this series.
- 34:23He is their best player. After Halliburton, let's face
- 34:27it, he is their next best player.
- 34:28It's time just like Jalen Williams stepped up for OKC,
- 34:31that the next best player on Indianapolis or Indiana rather
- 34:35has to step up. He just has to or else they have
- 34:37no chance. And I and I think Siakam will do
- 34:40his best. I bet he has a good game.
- 34:42But without without Halliburton, he's going to have to make all
- 34:45like the Gretzky assists tonight.
- 34:47You know, like kind of like what we're saying Pippen did you know
- 34:49where he's making the pass to set up the open shot.
- 34:52You know, it's not that he's the he's doing the direct assist.
- 34:55He's reversed the ball the right way to get there to be an easy
- 34:58decision for the next guy to get the right basket, either shot or
- 35:01pass. And if he can do that, they can
- 35:03get by with it. But they're going to need
- 35:05someone else to handle the ball because he's going to get
- 35:07hounded full court and with so how?
- 35:10So, fish, how much do you think you've relied on Halliburton all
- 35:14this time? You got to put him off ball.
- 35:17How much you have to? You can't make him the point
- 35:20guard, you know, as the I mean, look, you can play him at point
- 35:23guard, but he shouldn't be carrying the ball up.
- 35:26He really shouldn't. You may want to so.
- 35:29You're trying to lessen his load.
- 35:31On I just think, OK, CS too smart and they're just going to
- 35:34pressure him because that leg is going to give that he's not
- 35:37healthy. We know he's not healthy and
- 35:39everybody knows a calf injury that just makes you vulnerable
- 35:43for other injuries. That's the big problem with the
- 35:46calf entry. And look, how many times have we
- 35:48seen someone with a bad calf or hurt their calf and then they
- 35:52keep playing on it and then their Achilles ghost.
- 35:54Didn't it just happened to Jason Tatum?
- 35:57Didn't it just happened to him? One of the five to seven best
- 36:01players in basketball. And that's what the.
- 36:03Other plan for a year so but but how do you how do you manage
- 36:06that load? Though I mean, it's game six of
- 36:08the. Finals, The other, the other
- 36:09thing, the other thing, this is the one way you can do it.
- 36:12And you saw them dominate against the Knicks at the end of
- 36:14that series and you saw it even when they came back in game one
- 36:18is the transition points. Maybe they just got to start
- 36:20with that type of methodology. Whenever you get a rebound, have
- 36:23everyone else be ready to run that quickly so you don't have
- 36:25to rely on Halliburton handling the ball like a traditional
- 36:29point guard would. And that's the Pacers mindset.
- 36:33They're trying to play fast of the fourth fastest offensive
- 36:36team and obviously they're one of the top 10 offenses in the
- 36:38NBA during the regular season because of that.
- 36:40And they took it to another level in the playoffs as as a
- 36:43result, when Cleveland and the Knicks both tried to play those
- 36:47types of half court defenses, they couldn't because they had
- 36:50to play the transition defense back that way and exposed badly
- 36:53the Knicks half court defense and perimeter defense
- 36:56especially. And then even against the Cavs,
- 36:58they were making a lot of tough contested shots because of that.
- 37:01So they have to get back to that style of play so Tyrese
- 37:04Halliburton doesn't get worn down handling the ball as often
- 37:08in the beginning of the game if he has to do it later in the
- 37:10game if they're down, yeah, you got to try something at your
- 37:13season's on the line. Yeah, you can make those crazy
- 37:15shots like we saw him do against Cleveland, where you have to
- 37:17bring the ball back off a missed free throw.
- 37:19You want to save it for moments like that where you're playing
- 37:22an inbound game and he doesn't have to move as much and he can
- 37:25still create for himself at that point.
- 37:27So if. It's it's kind of kind of be
- 37:29like what we've talked about before.
- 37:31It's going to be like 2 halves of the game.
- 37:33Like who either makes the adjustment or doesn't and how he
- 37:39So is he going to be less of a force in the first half or
- 37:43second-half like? I think ball handling wise, Fish
- 37:46is that's what fish is getting at is you don't want him being
- 37:48worn down as a ball handler. That's why I'm saying like if
- 37:51you know that you have a one-on-one match up with with
- 37:54the shooter on the defensive side of the ball and you're an
- 37:57off the ball defender, start running.
- 37:59Like, OK, he makes the shot, he makes the shot fine, but start
- 38:02running and trust your big men to be able to get those
- 38:05rebounds. Trust Miles Turner, trust
- 38:07Siakam, trust guys like Thomas Bryan off the bench to get those
- 38:10rebounds if you need to and start pushing quickly.
- 38:14Get a guy in an outlet pass where you're past half court
- 38:17within a second or two after the guy gets the rebound well.
- 38:22You know, as far as Halliburton goes, he's really the most
- 38:26important player in the entire playoffs.
- 38:29What he's been able to do has been absolutely remarkable.
- 38:32We got to give him his flowers a little bit because I do think
- 38:35they're going to get blown out tonight.
- 38:36I don't think this is going to be a close game.
- 38:38I actually am super excited to see the Pacers fans suffer the
- 38:42way that we had to suffer at their hands.
- 38:43A little bit, a little bit, a little bit speedy.
- 38:46I'm I'm a little malicious here. It's a great run if Carlisle
- 38:50comes up with a way to stop it. I mean, power to him.
- 38:53I really just don't see it. If Jalen Williams is going to be
- 38:56that good as the secondary scorer.
- 38:58I don't know what answer you have.
- 39:00You can't stop both of those guys.
- 39:02You don't have enough horses to do it.
- 39:03You're going to need a superhuman effort from Siakam
- 39:06and you need you're going to need like Halliburton to turn
- 39:08into like Willis Reed or some shit like that.
- 39:11It's it's going to be something like miraculous, but we've seen
- 39:14miracles this post season from from the Pacers.
- 39:17You never know. That's why they play the games,
- 39:19right? So let's let's see the game.
- 39:22You know, we're going to be able to recap it next week when
- 39:25Aerial gets back. The bus family is raking in the
- 39:28money. They just sold the Lakers
- 39:31majority stake to the Lakers. They're going to hold on to 15%.
- 39:34But they sold the Lakers for a record $10 billion.
- 39:41Yes, the doctor Evil Pinky, because that's almost, he said
- 39:45what, 100 billion or something in the movie?
- 39:47Oh my God, $10 billion. Let's get into it right away.
- 39:51The Lakers were sold for 10 billion yesterday, the largest
- 39:54sale of a professional sports team in sports history by almost
- 39:584 billion. If you could do the math, that's
- 40:0140% of the higher. The Bus family sold the team to
- 40:06TWG Global CEO Mark Walter, who had a 26% stake in the Lakers
- 40:14already and is the majority owner or of the group, the
- 40:18Guggenheim Group or whatever it is.
- 40:19I guess that's what TWG is in the Dodgers.
- 40:22So he's basically the. Man like the Dodgers, Something
- 40:24world, Guggenheim. I forget what the T stands for.
- 40:27Guggenheim, I think, was a guy who died on the Titanic.
- 40:30I guess his name is still being used and he's got a museum
- 40:33somewhere in the city. I know that.
- 40:34But the Bus family will still control, like I said, 15% of the
- 40:37Lakers. And here's a really cool thing.
- 40:39Jeanie Buss will remain the governor of the franchise.
- 40:43One league source believes this is a scary thing for the NBA
- 40:46because the Lakers can now be run like a real business.
- 40:50Yes, we can that we're definitely going to talk about
- 40:52the Lakers doing kind of weird stuff over the years.
- 40:54Luka Doncic tweeted that the Buss family deserves a lot of
- 40:57credit for making the Lakers an amazing organization and welcome
- 41:00it to LA earlier this year. Luka's eligible for the four
- 41:03year 229 Max extension that he's probably going to take, and
- 41:07LeBron is likely to opt into his $52.6 million player option for
- 41:13this season. Following the sale, 14 NBA teams
- 41:16have now changed ownership since the CBA in 2011, since Jerry
- 41:21Buss and listen to this Jerry Buss bought the Lakers in 1979.
- 41:25The Lakers have won over 60% of their games, 11 total
- 41:28championships, most in the NBA in that span.
- 41:31One last thing, he bought it for $67 million.
- 41:37He sell the family is selling it for $10 billion.
- 41:43I don't know. I got, I don't got the ROI
- 41:45Jabba, but I think I would take that that deal every single time
- 41:50and twice on Sundays. Well, I mean, it's, you got to
- 41:53understand too, like he's, he's done it for so long and, and
- 41:57just the story history of what the Lakers are and the players
- 42:01that they've had and guys that have been there that have done
- 42:06certain things. It's, it doesn't surprise me by
- 42:11any means. I it's interesting to me that
- 42:20he's he, he's obviously already a he's a minority owner already.
- 42:25And now he's like, I just have a buttload of money.
- 42:27So I'm going to, I'm going to buy it and then still let her
- 42:32run it because they've done it for so long.
- 42:36So I don't, I don't honestly like, and it was listening to
- 42:43Tim Legler on the show the other day.
- 42:45He was like, yeah, it's 10 billion reasons why they sold
- 42:49the team. But it's just it's a weird
- 42:53dynamic and and kind of what you touched on earlier too is like,
- 42:58So what is that value of Luca? What is that value of LeBron?
- 43:04I would say it's pretty high. And I, I like, as annoying as
- 43:10Errol is, and I hope he's listening and on his cruise and
- 43:15doing whatever, but I don't think he's very far.
- 43:20I'm, I'm not saying it's the LGA, but I think has a very big
- 43:25impact on it because you don't have people like that, like
- 43:30Jordan when he bought the Bobcats, like you think about
- 43:34those things, right? And so his impact is very
- 43:40similar. He'll never be Jordan because
- 43:43nobody's, nobody's buying Lebron's 20 years and they're
- 43:47not reproducing Lebron's 20 years ago, you know, But they do
- 43:52that with Jordans. I mean, Jordan, there's only one
- 43:56Jordan. I mean, we have this debate all
- 43:58the time. There's only, there's only one
- 44:00Jordan. Lebron's been on a bunch of
- 44:02teams, you know, I guess he's been with the Lakers now.
- 44:05How many years has been speeding 2018?
- 44:07Was his first year with the Lakers.
- 44:09So 7 years with the Lakers I guess.
- 44:11Is this going to be his? 1819 was the first year, so that
- 44:16would be. So 7.
- 44:17This will be his 7th year with the Lakers so.
- 44:20Yeah. No, no, he's pretty much like 7
- 44:23years, except with a shortened year.
- 44:24Yeah. So it's about 7:00.
- 44:25Years, right, right, right, right.
- 44:26The the COVID year. So if I'm a Laker fan, I'm
- 44:32jacked up because now the bus family, you always were worried
- 44:37that they were going to do something really stupid.
- 44:40You just were because they always fought each other for
- 44:43control for years, like who was going to have more say?
- 44:46And you could always tell Jeannie was getting frustrated
- 44:48with her brothers and that there was sometimes that, you know,
- 44:52one of the brothers had the year of Rob Pelanka.
- 44:54And but over time, it seems to settle that Jeannie's in charge
- 44:59and running the day-to-day. And Mark Walter decided we're
- 45:03going to keep you doing that for instead in the contract or the
- 45:06thing that I read. I, I guess it's not a contract.
- 45:08The thing that we read was about for the foreseeable future, for
- 45:11a number of years, Jeanie Buss is going to stay running the
- 45:14Lakers, I guess, as the president of the Lakers, I
- 45:17guess. Operations or whatever it is
- 45:20I'm. Sure, we'll get a cool title
- 45:22from them at some point soon in the news presser.
- 45:26If you're an LA fan, don't you have blind faith in Walter at
- 45:30this point? This is the guy that brought
- 45:33Shohei Otani over to LA that made that didn't even need a
- 45:38healthy show. Hey Otani to embarrass the
- 45:40Yankees in the World Series last year that I would argue should
- 45:44be the prohibitive favorites again, even though they're
- 45:47suffering more injuries to their pitching than anyone else.
- 45:50It doesn't matter. They have more money.
- 45:52They still have guys. Guys will come back.
- 45:55They're fine. Snell will be back soon.
- 45:58They just have all these guys because they have unlimited
- 46:00resources because their owner is putting and money where the
- 46:04mouth is. Fish, they're being strategic.
- 46:05They're pitching position players in the 6th inning to
- 46:08make sure they don't pitch. They have any more pitching
- 46:09injuries. Well.
- 46:14I don't know if I'd go that far, but.
- 46:16I, I, I do think sarcasm, I do think the, well, look, there's,
- 46:20there's some weird stuff out there, but the, the Dodgers for
- 46:23the most part, should be looked at as the best ownership group
- 46:28in baseball because they're putting all the money and
- 46:30resources into their, their, their product.
- 46:33They're finding creative ways to add free agents with this
- 46:36deferred money gambit that they figured out before anyone else
- 46:40did. Anyone else could have done it.
- 46:42It was this, it was there sitting on the table.
- 46:44They came up with it. I hate that argument fish though
- 46:47because it's been happening for so many years.
- 46:52Well, they it's like, so this is weird, but I'm thinking about
- 46:56like an economics lesson I once taught Java where the, the movie
- 46:59The Big Short and the housing crisis that happened in like
- 47:022008. If you ever saw that movie, it
- 47:04was a great movie, Brad Pitt, Steve Carell, and it was all
- 47:07about like, you know, shit, I'm losing my my train of thought.
- 47:13I don't. I can't remember why I brought.
- 47:15It up No but but no but think about that though too, where
- 47:18it's like you have Bobby and me to be getting paid Candy Griffey
- 47:21getting paid by the Reds. He was like the third highest on
- 47:24their payroll. You have guys that there's been
- 47:27plenty of contracts that have done this for a long.
- 47:30Time, I'm sorry. So what I was saying is like
- 47:32some sometimes agma good GM finds a loophole, you know what
- 47:36I mean? And there were so many.
- 47:38Loop holes. Is it a loophole though?
- 47:41Or is it just it's a? Loophole in the CBA that they
- 47:44didn't think of. But they're allowed to do it.
- 47:46So everybody. CBA until the next CBA.
- 47:50If people don't want it, they're going to reject it.
- 47:52But guess what? They're not going to vote
- 47:53against it because all that does is inflate people's salaries and
- 47:56nobody's going to be against that, right?
- 47:59Like, it would be very silly to be against that.
- 48:00Unless the owners gang up and try to lower the amount of money
- 48:03they're spending for some reason, I don't see how players
- 48:06are going to oppose that ever. It's weird we see these these
- 48:10numbers with funny money and a team like the Dodgers can stack
- 48:12themselves. It's a little different in the
- 48:15NBA. It's different parameters,
- 48:17different rules. But it's but it's also the same
- 48:19time you you got to look at it too.
- 48:21Like when you have somebody that signs a contract in front of
- 48:25you, it just sets you up to be able to sign either the same
- 48:30contract and you have a barrier of what like I can sign for
- 48:37because they do that. And so it's just.
- 48:41Jabba like it's if they were able to think of everything and
- 48:46they would have put it in the CBA.
- 48:47Well, they don't think of everything because we as players
- 48:52think of it differently. They think of it as owners and
- 48:55do it differently. So it's.
- 48:57Speedy, let me pose it to you. Think about all the different
- 49:01coaches like a Belichick that would do anything to get an
- 49:04edge. This happens in business every
- 49:07day of the week with great businessmen and in the economy
- 49:10in 2008 and for the decade preceding it, people were buying
- 49:14these, you know, like people's debt from their mortgages and
- 49:18trading on it. And it was a loophole that
- 49:20people were able to find ways to make lots of money, sell bad
- 49:23mortgages, and the whole market crashed.
- 49:25That would be worst case scenario for this deferred money
- 49:28experiment. Most likely what's going to
- 49:31happen is everyone's going to make money and there will be
- 49:33some teams that can't do the deferred and you're going to
- 49:35have a parody widen. In my opinion, in the league
- 49:38between the haves and the have nots, even with collective
- 49:41bargaining, I don't really care about that.
- 49:43We could talk about the baseball stuff another time.
- 49:45I want to talk about if now I'm a Lakers fan, I have that guy as
- 49:50my owner, that guy that wants to do those things for my
- 49:53franchise, That guy who's going to do whatever it takes to put
- 49:56in a winning product up there, including spend more money than
- 49:59everyone else in the league and find loopholes to find ways to
- 50:02spend even more money so I can have even better players in
- 50:05depth. You know, we just we talked
- 50:07about the loophole the Panthers used to add Marshand in the last
- 50:10segment because the Kucherov, I guess we call it the.
- 50:14Kucherov, now Edmonton's being investigated for the same thing.
- 50:18Well, because now you're going to see in the next CBA, they're
- 50:20going to write language into it to get rid of that.
- 50:22They have to because that's a bad rule and somebody, but
- 50:25somebody figured it out. That's trying real hard and you
- 50:28got to give them credit for coming up with it.
- 50:30It's a loophole and it's somebody in business trying to
- 50:34find a way around the rules or through the rules.
- 50:36That's not a not necessarily illegal.
- 50:38I mean, how many times did Belichick try to sneak a guy
- 50:41onto the field? You know what I mean?
- 50:44John John Harbaugh and I forget who the other coach was still
- 50:47mad about the whole offensive line LO ship ball role.
- 50:50That look, he, he's definitely tried some stuff over the years.
- 50:54And our dad Campbell's accelerated up.
- 50:56I, I just really appreciate people.
- 50:59Like if, if that was my owner, I'd be pumped up.
- 51:01I, I know, I, I, I just know from what I saw last year as a
- 51:06Yankee fan that I would take that guy to run any franchise
- 51:10that I was rooting for. That franchise is scary.
- 51:14They're petrifying and they haven't even hit their stride
- 51:16in, in baseball yet. Now just imagine the things that
- 51:19they're going to do. They're going to spend on role
- 51:21players. They're not going to just, you
- 51:24know, they're going to have their star.
- 51:25You know, when LeBron leaves that they'll open up some, some
- 51:27money a couple years from now, but they're going to have Luca
- 51:30tied up. They're going to build around
- 51:32them and they're going to find a way.
- 51:34And LeBron, maybe he spends, Speaking of Scottie Pippen,
- 51:37maybe he spends the last couple years of his career.
- 51:40But Luke, Luke, Luke Lucas not going to get a supermax because
- 51:44of what they're at. So no, he only gets the four
- 51:47years because of the trade. Yes, the trade.
- 51:49So it's he's so young. Are they, are they going to try
- 51:54and like basically like you just said, build upon him where he
- 51:59can get a supermax a little bit later and then build around him?
- 52:04I don't I don't know that answer obviously.
- 52:07I don't know exactly the rules on that Speedy.
- 52:10I think it cuz he was just traded to them.
- 52:12He can only get a four year deal.
- 52:14That's the only I don't know if he's already signed the four
- 52:16year deal that after that deal that he can sign a five year one
- 52:19for the Max correct. I think that's how it.
- 52:21Works because he signed his deal.
- 52:23He signed his deal in 2022, so he had one more.
- 52:26He has the one more year. That's why it's being talked
- 52:28about. Right, so, so speedy.
- 52:30So he has to, so he has to finish that contract and then
- 52:36then is he eligible? For the Super after.
- 52:38This deal he'll be eligible for the five year deal.
- 52:41Okay. Yeah, that's the only reason.
- 52:43It's only because of that. That's exactly what it is, new
- 52:46team. And that's why I guess he wants
- 52:50him to be able to negotiate it now.
- 52:52But at the same time, I think Luca is also the reason he's
- 52:54saying I would take it is I'm going to buy into this
- 52:56philosophy of now we're actually going to be run right and not
- 52:59have all these guys almost want to go to the Lakers.
- 53:02And then maybe they dodged a bullet with some of them like
- 53:04Paul George. But like all these guys that
- 53:06want to go to the Lakers and then say no and you turn into
- 53:10the Knicks W where nobody wants to go there because of your
- 53:13ownership. But we have, we have our guests
- 53:16waiting, but we have Gary Phillips going to talk about the
- 53:19Yankees and this Dodgers. You know, I know I want to talk
- 53:22a little bit about last year's World Series and this Dodgers
- 53:24team for a little bit with them as well.
- 53:26But before we get into that, guys, this Laker team is set up.
- 53:33They have Luka Doncic, a top five player in the NBA.
- 53:37They have LeBron James who was second team all NBA.
- 53:39So technically he's still a 10 top ten player in the NBA.
- 53:43They are ready to win. They absolutely are.
- 53:46Now they have an ownership group running them that's going to do
- 53:49everything they can to make that happen.
- 53:52Is JJ Redick the guy though? Look, if he's not, he'll be gone
- 53:56soon. I do think that if LeBron, as
- 53:59long as Lebron's there, I have a feeling JJ will stay with them.
- 54:03That's that's what I think. And I think JJ is getting better
- 54:05as a coach, You know, you don't want to judge somebody on their
- 54:07first year. You want to see how they make
- 54:09adjustments in their second year.
- 54:11I think I think he's earned that right.
- 54:14So I'm excited to see it. I like JJ as a player and he's
- 54:18obviously a brilliant basketball mine.
- 54:19So we'll we'll see what happens with that.
- 54:21It's definitely a unique team to coach.
- 54:24I do think they need to figure out the role player situation
- 54:26there. They need to get some more
- 54:27shooters around those guys. They need to have a little bit
- 54:29more defense better, you know, kind of try to get a three and D
- 54:33wing in there for them as well. I mean, obviously Desmond Bayne
- 54:36isn't coming, but there could be some other guys out there for
- 54:39them. But before we get into that, we
- 54:41got to talk about a different set of basketball.
- 54:43We're going to talk about the WNBA.
- 54:46Oh, here we go. Here we go.
- 54:48Yeah, something smells in today's Deuce of the Day.
- 54:53The deuce of the day you log not a log.
- 54:57I don't have a log but. Oh yes, that is correct.
- 55:08We got Caitlin Clark for our deuce of the day today.
- 55:12Not because of anything she did, but because of how she's being
- 55:16treated as a player in the WNBA. Look, first team all WNBA is a
- 55:22rookie. There was a lot of beef, we know
- 55:25it going on between her and Angel Reese dating back to
- 55:28college. It became kind of a political
- 55:31thing, a racial thing. Well, here's the thing that I
- 55:34saw there was, and we're going to put the clip up in a second
- 55:36of when she gets fouled with a flagrant foul in the most recent
- 55:40game they played and it led to a skirmish in the WNBA fever, I
- 55:46believe versus the Connecticut Sun, if I'm not mistaken, right.
- 55:49So the so basically if you, I don't know if we got the clip
- 55:52yet, but it's there. And what happens?
- 55:55She's dribbling, she gets poked in the eye and she gets poked in
- 55:58the eye. No call is made and she kind of
- 56:00bumps into the person who was guarding her and kind of just
- 56:03shoves her briefly and then someone comes on over and throws
- 56:07her hard to the ground. Now here is where I'm talking
- 56:11about my deuce today. I am not even mad at the team
- 56:15that did that to her. I'm mad at her teammates because
- 56:19if you watch this clip and here it is right now, she's doing
- 56:21every she gets, she gets poked in the eye, kind of incidental
- 56:24contact. She gets shoved to the ground.
- 56:26Do you see anyone helping her walking off by?
- 56:32Herself, So, so so are you, are you mad at that at the point or
- 56:36I'm look, I'm what do you see with with Sophie Cunningham
- 56:40doing it at the end of the game where she still was like, Hey,
- 56:45I'm protecting. I I don't disagree with you
- 56:49because like at the time, like I don't care if I'm not that dude,
- 56:58but if that's my team, I don't give a shit.
- 57:02Bro I'm an offensive lineman. I'm going to take.
- 57:05Care of you hit my quarterback, I'm getting you.
- 57:07You're going down, I'm getting. You.
- 57:09That's that's that's the rule you.
- 57:12Cannot it's, can not. It's an under what I I did love
- 57:17what Sophie Cunningham did. I I did love that.
- 57:20But that you know, that was later after they realized they.
- 57:22Needed it was, but they, they realized that and like for her
- 57:27because like her social media presence and what she does and
- 57:30like she's the he's a very, very beautiful woman.
- 57:37And I'm like, you did it and it wasn't even it, it wasn't a
- 57:43basketball play. It was not like she was like,
- 57:46I'm just taking your ass down. That's what I'm doing and I I
- 57:51appreciate that, but at the same time, why aren't you at the same
- 57:55time when I get pushed down? Why aren't you doing the same
- 57:59thing? Because and it stinks to me,
- 58:01Jabba, it's it stinks to high hell.
- 58:05Yep. It stinks like a deuce of the
- 58:09day. Yes, today's deuce of the day
- 58:11goes to Caitlin Clark's teammates.
- 58:14Not to mention the people knocking her down.
- 58:16Both of them. Especially not helping her up.
- 58:20You protect your teammates. They need, you know, the old
- 58:23Rangers enforcer, Matt Rempe. You just signed A2 year deal.
- 58:27They need the WNBA version of a Matt Rempe on that team.
- 58:30We need to protect Caitlin. She needs the protection of some
- 58:35kind of enforcer. I don't know what the equivalent
- 58:37is of that, but get her on that Chicago Fever team.
- 58:42It's been wonderful. Thanks everybody that came on
