- 0:00Exodus chapter 17 let's start in verse one and all the
- 0:04congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the
- 0:07wilderness of sin after their journeys according to the
- 0:10commandment of the Lord and pitched in refadim and there was
- 0:14no water for the people to drink.
- 0:16So you're going to see this murmuring and grumbling and
- 0:19complaining and it's not against Moses friends, it's not against
- 0:23Aaron friends. This is against God himself, and
- 0:27isn't it just like humanity whenever we see the mighty hand
- 0:31of God moving all around us, but we are quick to forget all the
- 0:36things that he has done for us in the past and we can't see the
- 0:40nose on our face. We can't see the very miracles
- 0:43and the blessings that he's giving to us today.
- 0:45And here the Israelites are no different.
- 0:48The Israelites, they're quick to forget the man of the quail.
- 0:52They're quick to forget the Sweetwater.
- 0:55They're quick to forget the dry land they walked across.
- 0:58They're quick to get all of the plagues in the land that rescued
- 1:02them from their oppressors, and here we are, and they're being
- 1:07LED through the wilderness. And it should have been a quick
- 1:10journey, but God had much that He wanted to pull out of the
- 1:13Israelites, His people who are called by His name.
- 1:16Verse 2 Wherefore the people did chide with Moses and said, Give
- 1:22us water that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why do
- 1:26you chide with me? Why do you tempt the Lord?
- 1:29So Moses here has a clear understanding and he knows that
- 1:33God can provide. And just because they cannot see
- 1:37the water, it does not mean that God can't provide in a
- 1:40miraculous way. He can make it rain down and
- 1:44fill water troughs. He can make water come up from
- 1:49the ground. But we're going to see how God
- 1:50chooses to provide for his people.
- 1:53Verse 3 And the people thirsted there for water, and the people
- 1:57murmured against Moses and said, why is this that you have
- 2:00brought us up out of Egypt to kill us and our children and our
- 2:04cattle with thirst. So here they are.
- 2:06They're basically provoking Moses, they're provoking God to
- 2:11action, and we do the same thing.
- 2:14And there is a difference between positive attention and
- 2:16negative attention, and there is attention nonetheless.
- 2:20But we know we do not need to be those that provoke God to act
- 2:25just so that we can see that he is real.
- 2:27And we provoke him with all of our chiding, with all of our
- 2:33provocation in the negative sense, friends.
- 2:37And it's like poking a bear. And then whenever the bear
- 2:40finally turns, we wish that we had never done it.
- 2:45And that is where people are today.
- 2:47They just want to see if God is even real.
- 2:50All they can see is dust on the Bibles.
- 2:53All they can see is a hypocrisy. All they can see is that
- 2:58churches are being shuttered and closed and turned into all kinds
- 3:02of businesses. All they can see is that God is
- 3:05somehow sleeping, or that he is distant, or that he does not
- 3:09care, or that he is not omnipotent.
- 3:12And they just want to, if God is who he says he is, friends, but
- 3:16it'll be too late for them. And you can see here that the
- 3:19people, they're provoking God into action.
- 3:22Verse 4 And Moses cried unto the Lord, saying, what shall I do to
- 3:26this people? They almost be ready to stone
- 3:30me. Moses here is talking to God and
- 3:33he says you can have it. God, I hang it up.
- 3:36These people, they're ready to stone me because there's no
- 3:40water here in Refidem 5 And the Lord said to Moses, go on before
- 3:46the people and take with you of the elders of Israel and your
- 3:50rod wherewith you struck the river, taking your hand and go.
- 3:55So God has a plan. God knows how to provide.
- 3:59God is not slack, nor does he slumber.
- 4:02He is not asleep. He knows all of our needs.
- 4:05He knows how to provide for us. Friends, it is us, it is our
- 4:09hearts, it is our motives that need to change.
- 4:12We need to get to a place when we see the lack, when we can't
- 4:15see God's movement. We need to get to a place on our
- 4:19knees in worship in total, total adoration unto a holy God,
- 4:24knowing that he can do anything, even if all of our circumstances
- 4:28and emotions and everything external, all of the impulses,
- 4:32friends speak against it. We need to be connected to God,
- 4:36to trust in God in the way that Moses does.
- 4:39He keeps going back to the Lord. He's speaking with the Lord.
- 4:42He's conversing with the Lord, and that is what we need to do
- 4:45as well. Six Behold, I will stand before
- 4:49you upon there upon the rock, and Horeb, and you shall strike
- 4:54the rock, and there shall come water out of it, and the people
- 4:58may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of
- 5:01the elders of Israel. So here this is synonymous with
- 5:04Christ. He was struck, and living water
- 5:07flowed out. And we can see here that God
- 5:10tells Moses to strike the rock. And we know that God can and He
- 5:15will provide for His people. He did not lead them out here in
- 5:19the wilderness just to see all all of them die. 7 And he called
- 5:24the name of the place Masa Meribah, because of the chiding
- 5:28of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the Lord,
- 5:31saying, Is the Lord among us or not?
- 5:34That's the whole thing is they want to know if God is even
- 5:38there. Even though they can see this
- 5:40pillar of fire and this cloud by day, pillar of fire by night.
- 5:47They can see the manna and the quail.
- 5:49They could see the bitter waters made sweet.
- 5:52They can see all of the miracles of God, the dry land that they
- 5:56got to walk across, the oppressors swallowed up in the
- 5:59sea. They could see all of these
- 6:01things, friends, the smoke and the lightnings and the pills of
- 6:06Thunder. They've seen all of these things
- 6:09and they still want to know, is God with us or not?
- 6:13And we do the same. God is moving mightily all
- 6:17around us in our midst, performing miracles after
- 6:20miracles after miracles, but we're not satisfied and we want
- 6:24more. And we want to see if God is
- 6:25even real. Far be it from us to be that
- 6:29way. 8 And then came Amalek and fought with Israel and Refadim
- 6:36so we could see this Amalek is a descendant of Esaw.
- 6:40Friends, this has been 430 years since the Genesis account Where
- 6:46Jacob and Esau departed and went their own separate ways.
- 6:49And we know that Joseph and all of Jacob's children came down
- 6:55into Egypt, and then they're let go and now they're moving in
- 6:59Canaan. And we see Esau's descendants
- 7:01come and they want a war and they want to fight with them.
- 7:04When we find out later in Scripture that they did it very
- 7:08slimy, they came from behind and they started to attack the women
- 7:14and the children from the back. And we could see that God did
- 7:18not take it lightly and He recorded it.
- 7:20And He said that He would forever deal with the Amalekites
- 7:23because of how they dealt with their brother, how they dealt
- 7:29with their relative there while they were crossing over into the
- 7:33Promised land. 9 Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out, men, and
- 7:41go out and fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top
- 7:45of the hill with the rod of God in my hand.
- 7:48So here we could see that Joshua gets mentioned for the first
- 7:52time and he is like a general in God's army.
- 7:56He's going to amass together troops and they're going to go
- 7:59out and fight against the Amalekites.
- 8:01And we can see here that God has already called the rod, Moses's
- 8:05rod. And now we can see that Moses
- 8:07calls it God's rod. And what they're doing is
- 8:10they're actually giving each other respect.
- 8:13They're actually giving each other honor, friends.
- 8:16And you can see here that they're going to go out and
- 8:19fight against the these very cantankerous enemies who are not
- 8:25fighting fair. They're not hitting them head
- 8:28on. They're coming from behind and
- 8:29taking out the weak ones. 10 So Joshua did as Moses had said to
- 8:35him and fought with the Amalek and Moses and Aaron and her went
- 8:39up to the top of the hill. So we know that Aaron was
- 8:42related to Moses, but perhaps her was as well through Miriam.
- 8:4811 And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, the
- 8:52Israelites prevailed. But when he let down his hand,
- 8:56Amalek prevailed. So somehow, someway, this
- 8:59holding up his hands in an act of worship was a way that God
- 9:05was allowing the Israelites to conquer over the Amalekites.
- 9:09But then whenever Moses got tired and he let down his hands,
- 9:13the Amalekites started to get the victor.
- 9:19But Moses's hands were heavy, and they took a stone and put it
- 9:22under him, and he sat on it. And Aaron and her stayed up, his
- 9:27hands, one-on-one side, the other on the other side.
- 9:30And his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.
- 9:33So these two grown men are holding up Moses's hands, and
- 9:39anytime his hands were held up, the Israelites prevailed against
- 9:43their enemy. And it's happened all the way
- 9:48until the going down of the sun. 13 and Joshua discomforted
- 9:53Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.
- 9:56So Joshua got the advantage over the enemies. 14 And the Lord
- 10:02said to Moses, write this for a memorial in a book.
- 10:06Rehearse it in the ears of Joshua, for I will utterly put
- 10:09out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.
- 10:13So here we see that God instructs Moses to start writing
- 10:17these things down. And perhaps that is the very
- 10:20book that you and I hold in our hands.
- 10:23How amazing is our God that God right here is instructing Moses
- 10:28to start writing the Pentateuch, friends, the very beginning of
- 10:33all inspired scripture, and we see it recorded here in Exodus
- 10:40for us to go and to look at the moment.
- 10:43And he tells Moses to recite it in the ears of Joshua.
- 10:49And that is something that we need, friends.
- 10:51We need to call to remembrance all of the times that God has
- 10:56come through for us. We do not need to have the sin
- 11:01of forgetfulness of all of the times, of God's many blessings
- 11:06upon our lives. And if we'll go back and look at
- 11:09all the times that it could have went evil for us, but God stood
- 11:13in the gap and God rescued us from the hands of the enemy,
- 11:17we'd go back. And we call those things to
- 11:19remembrance. We stir them up within our
- 11:22minds, and it is great encouragement for the days to
- 11:27come. 15 And Moses built an altar and called the name of it
- 11:33Jehovah Nisi. Because God is our banner.
- 11:36He's over us. Friends, We lift up the God of
- 11:39Israel, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
- 11:42We lift them up over our health, over our wealth, over our bodies
- 11:47and over our families, over our children and over our nation,
- 11:51over the globe. He is the banner.
- 11:54He is the all sufficient sacrifice.
- 11:56He is our All in all, our only one who is worthy of all
- 12:01adoration and attention. Friends, we give him all due
- 12:05respect and honor because He is the banner over it.
- 12:08And we wave the flag over our houses.
- 12:12We wave the flag over our workplaces.
- 12:15We wave the flag over the schools and over the government,
- 12:19over the courtrooms and over our children.
- 12:22Friends, we wave the flag of Yeshua and we proclaim Him as
- 12:28the highest in the land. He is the name that is above all
- 12:32names. Regardless of if mankind wants
- 12:35to admit it or not. It is the only thing worth
- 12:39worshipping is God Almighty, the God of the Jews.
- 12:44I hope you've been blessed by this amazing chapter.
- 12:47God's word. We'll end on 16.
- 12:49For he said because the Lord has sworn that the Lord will have
- 12:53war with Amalek from generation to generation, they will be
- 12:57completely done in the entire nation of Esau.
- 13:01And the Edomites, friends, are completely wiped off the face of
- 13:06the map. And it is not for us to try to
- 13:09figure out God's ways. We just say yes and Amen.
- 13:13And when God says in verse 16 that the Amalekites will be
- 13:18completely gone, that is what is exactly what has happened in the
- 13:22land. I hope you've been blessed by
- 13:24this amazing chapter in God's Word.
- 13:26I know I sure have. Let's say a quick prayer.
- 13:29We thank you Father, for this day.
- 13:30We thank you God for all your many blessings.
- 13:33We thank you for your Word. God come and get your glory in
- 13:37our lives. We thank you for another
- 13:39opportunity to come and worship you in spirit and truth.
- 13:42It's in Jesus name that I pray, Amen.
