- 0:02Hey, hey, thank you all so much for joining another episode of Celeste
- 0:05the Therapist podcast. My name is Celeste. I'm a therapist from Boston. If
- 0:09you've never been into this podcast, I appreciate you being
- 0:13here. What I do is I talk about issues that we go through,
- 0:16and then I kind of help you think about ways in
- 0:19which you can Challenge yourself and deal with it. I
- 0:23am located in Massachusetts And I also have a Wellness Center located
- 0:27in Stoughton mass where we hold classes And
- 0:30we hold different somatic classes and workshops things
- 0:34to help you with your wellness journey because
- 0:37I believe that once we take one step into creating
- 0:41change It's easier to keep going, right?
- 0:45It's harder. The first step is the hard part. So, um, if
- 0:48you do listen to this podcast, one of the things that I recommend is
- 0:51like getting a notebook and a pen and writing things down,
- 0:55um, writing it down and making it plain can really help. A lot of times we'll
- 1:00hear a podcast, we'll go to a workshop. We'll go
- 1:03to something motivating and it feels really good. And then once we
- 1:06leave, we're back into the environment. And if you live
- 1:09in America, everything is so chaotic. So it's easy to
- 1:13feel discouraged and feel as if like
- 1:16change can't happen. So one of the things that I believe
- 1:20is like when we work on changing the mind, I was
- 1:23listening to Myron, the guy's last name. He's a motivational speaker.
- 1:27But he said the mind is the command center
- 1:30of our life. And if you feel like your mind
- 1:34is so chaotic and you struggle with making time to be still, being
- 1:37still feels scary because you're forced to listen to your
- 1:40thoughts. Understand that you're allowing your
- 1:44trauma, your history, society to control your
- 1:48life. And if you feel like things are
- 1:51always happening to you, a lot of times that's going
- 1:55on because of what's going on in the mind. So
- 1:58before we get started, I just want to share I have two books I'm
- 2:01gonna try to make sure to talk about it every single episode. I
- 2:05have a guided journal. So I'm also on YouTube So if you're listening to me
- 2:08on YouTube, I mean if you're listening to me on audio You can hop on YouTube
- 2:12and see the visuals. I'm a very visual learner So it's important to
- 2:15me to provide visual content for people as I'm talking about things
- 2:19So I have a guided journal is called 365 days
- 2:23of intentional living every day. I actually a different question and then
- 2:26halfway through the book I'm asking you that same question that
- 2:31I asked you on day one, just so you can see how
- 2:34your things have changed over the
- 2:38course of, what is it, half of 365, right?
- 2:42To see how things have changed. This is a great journal
- 2:45for people that may be in therapy or not in therapy, not sure how
- 2:49to start reflecting. Journaling is a great way to reflect. I
- 2:53also have a book called Relationship Goals and it's a guide to a
- 2:56healthy relationship where I give
- 2:59these different staples on what a healthy relationship looks
- 3:03like, meaning basically like maintaining your individuality, understanding
- 3:08what you want. There are a lot of staples that we are
- 3:11not clear on and we're not understanding why
- 3:15we are struggling in relationships. And a lot of times it's due to the
- 3:18way that we have thought about relationships, right?
- 3:22I came up with the title because I would see on social media, people
- 3:26would put under people's pictures, hashtag relationship goals based
- 3:29off of a little clip or a video. And the reality is,
- 3:33is that a healthy relationship is more than just
- 3:36a picture. So those are the two books you can find on my
- 3:39website stwyt.com And
- 3:42then we also these are the classes that we host. These are staple
- 3:46classes at the center We host these every single month
- 3:50so we have Restorative yoga class
- 3:54that's always the last friday of the month And
- 3:57then we have a class called mindful yin and another class called
- 4:00rest and restore all of these classes were created in
- 4:06order to help people work on slowing down
- 4:09their nervous system. We don't realize how much we hold
- 4:13pain in our body. So a lot of times, like intellectually, if
- 4:17you feel like I'm making the connections, I understand what's going on,
- 4:20but I'm still feeling stuck. A lot of times that could be because there's
- 4:23a lot that's happening inside of your body and creating
- 4:28a space to release it is important and
- 4:31so we have somatic classes here at the center. If
- 4:35you go to stwyt.com you
- 4:39can learn more about Those
- 4:42classes and attend and
- 4:45then if you're not familiar with Me if
- 4:48this is your first time here one
- 4:52of the things that's important to me is for
- 4:55you to not look at these podcast episodes as
- 4:59like just a feel-good session and I really want you to
- 5:03try to use it as a way for you to get what you
- 5:06need. One of the things that I understand is that when
- 5:09it comes to wellness, a lot of times we try to put a
- 5:13price tag on it. And a lot of times it's true, like a
- 5:16lot of the things that can really help us with
- 5:20our process cost money. And
- 5:24I never want people to think that because things
- 5:28cost money, they're not able to heal. So that's
- 5:31why I try to offer all of these kind of resources and
- 5:35a way for people to rethink what wellness looks like
- 5:38so that they're not like, oh, well, I don't have a therapist or I
- 5:41don't have a psychiatrist, so I can't give myself what I
- 5:45need. I don't I really want people to understand like
- 5:48despite what they have despite what they don't
- 5:51have It's really important for us to like use
- 5:55what we have and start where we are and if we can do that
- 5:59Life looks differently. So we are streaming on all
- 6:02podcasting platforms, and I've been doing this since 2018 and I started this
- 6:05because I was I I
- 6:11was actually going live on a few platforms
- 6:15and on Fridays I would answer questions. And
- 6:18I realized just how much people don't understand
- 6:22a lot of the basics of life. I call them like
- 6:25the ABCs of life. Like imagine trying to read, but
- 6:29you don't know your alphabets. And I think about life and I
- 6:32think about we're trying to do life, but we don't understand the emotions. We don't understand
- 6:36the basics. And so it gets really challenging. Today's
- 6:40topic when emotions and logic clash the power of
- 6:43intentional living you see my book my journals called 365 days
- 6:48of intentional living because I believe the is so important for us to be
- 6:51intentional About what we're choosing to do. I
- 6:54always say if you start your day scrolling playing games
- 6:59doing Anything that does not pertain to
- 7:02you growing Starting your day sets the tone And
- 7:06a lot of times we don't even start our day with us. We start our
- 7:10day with the emails with everything else but us
- 7:14And then we struggle and not understanding why we feel how we feel
- 7:17and it's like well, what am I feeding my system? Um, so there's so
- 7:21much um, there's so much growth and
- 7:24being intentional, right? And not doing things
- 7:28based off of how we feel but our intent. So
- 7:32emotions versus logic, right? It's important for you to understand. So
- 7:36emotions are subjective feelings, right? Like in
- 7:39this moment, I can feel nervous and
- 7:43let's say I'm about to speak, I have a speaking engagement and
- 7:47maybe one time I had a speaking engagement, I didn't do well.
- 7:50And so my mind will go back to the time I had the speaking engagement
- 7:54and I didn't go well. And the nervousness could be due to the
- 7:57fact that my mind is thinking like, oh, it's happening again. So
- 8:02technically nothing's happening in front of me, but the
- 8:05feeling of what's happening is real. And
- 8:08luckily for me, I'm able to make connections when those moments happen, right?
- 8:12So something that happened 20 years ago could affect you in
- 8:182025, and you may not even realize that's what's going on. And so let's
- 8:22say I start to feel nervous, but I'm prepared, right? So I tell myself,
- 8:25Celestia, prepare, you got this. But what if I don't allow
- 8:29logic to take over and I say, I can't do this, right? And
- 8:33speaking may be my passion, helping people may be my passion, but
- 8:36I'll never be able to push forward with what I feel
- 8:40like my passion and my goals in life are because I'm allowing the
- 8:44emotion to take over and rule the way that I operate. So
- 8:48emotions are subjective feelings often directed towards a
- 8:51specific object that involve physiological and behavioral changes.
- 8:56Whether you realize it or not, there are behavioral, physical
- 8:59changes that take place when you are struggling
- 9:03with some emotion. Sometimes people talk
- 9:07about their throat is feels like it's closing in on them. Their stomach is
- 9:10turning their back is hurting, right? There are a lot of things that are
- 9:13happening in your body when you're dealing with some of these emotions So
- 9:17logic on the other hand is a system of reasoning and principle used
- 9:20to determine the truth or falsity of a conclusion while
- 9:24emotions are personal experience logic relies on rational thought
- 9:28analysis And so an example of another
- 9:31example is like if you're dating somebody and
- 9:35you know that the relationship logically doesn't work But
- 9:38emotionally you feel so attached right and this could
- 9:41be a whole topic about relationships. I love talking about relationships But
- 9:45the attachment could be because they may remind you of
- 9:49your absentee dad, right? Even though it's like
- 9:52why would I want to be with somebody who doesn't show up for me? Like my dad didn't show
- 9:56up for me. You don't realize that that's happening You
- 9:59don't realize that you're attached because it's a
- 10:02familiar feeling of this person not being available to
- 10:06you, right? And so you find yourself feeling like
- 10:09you're stuck in this relationship and you're like, I don't like,
- 10:12I don't know why I'm in this. Like logically, I know they're not good
- 10:15for me. And so that's a prime example of how logic and emotion don't
- 10:19match. You can find yourself feeling so drawn to somebody logically
- 10:24knowing it's not true. And that's why I say going
- 10:28off of intention and reasoning versus how you
- 10:31feel is important. A lot of us are operating life
- 10:35based off of how we feel and we don't realize that's happening.
- 10:38So that's the difference between emotion and logic. Emotions
- 10:43are feelings, logic is you're using reasoning, right? So
- 10:48emotions can cloud your judgment. Emotions are
- 10:52significantly influencing decision-making, sometimes
- 10:56leading to bias or irrational choices due to clouded judgment.
- 11:00While emotions can be a valuable guide, strong feelings can
- 11:03impair critical thinking and result in poor decisions. How many,
- 11:06you know, if you're being honest with yourself, how many of you can say like you've
- 11:10had some irrational decisions that you've made over the
- 11:13years, over the course of years, right? Impulsive things
- 11:17that you've done and not understanding why a Lot
- 11:21of times this is happening because that remote that rush of emotion is coming
- 11:25and you're not used to making applause You're not used to even recognizing it's happening
- 11:28I tell people sometimes the emotion may hit you and
- 11:32your body before you intellectually understand what's going on
- 11:36which is why it's very important to pay attention
- 11:40to what's going on in your body and The more you pay attention to
- 11:43what's going on in your body, the more you understand the signs that your body
- 11:46is giving that it's struggling and it's not okay. And
- 11:50you may ask like, well, why does this happen, Celeste? A
- 11:54lot of times growing up, our parents were in survival mode. They didn't have
- 11:57the capacity. To teach us how to listen
- 12:00to our body because they wasn't even listening to their body, right? So if
- 12:04they're not listening to their body, how the heck they're gonna teach us how to listen to our body And
- 12:07so it's so important to understand that just because you
- 12:11were not taught how to listen to your body How
- 12:14to understand the signs doesn't mean you can't understand the
- 12:17signs. You're human. You're not a robot So you're gonna have these
- 12:21experiences that is so important for you to understand So
- 12:26really being mindful on the emotions and
- 12:29how they've affected your judgment because you don't have
- 12:32to keep living life that way. Now,
- 12:36this picture for people that are listening, I have a picture where it
- 12:39shows emotional mind versus logic mind. And
- 12:43it says emotional mind reacts from feelings, energy levels and
- 12:46psychological states and needs, while the logic mind
- 12:50responds using logic, cause and effect, reasoning, analysis of
- 12:54possible consequences. If we merge
- 12:57these together, right, we'll get a wise mind, right? Seeks
- 13:02to synthesize and balance logic and emotion perspectives and to serve
- 13:05the highest good, being more mindful. So I'm
- 13:10conscious of my emotions and my experiences and
- 13:13what I'm feeling. I'm also conscious about my logic mind, right?
- 13:17I'm able to understand reasoning. And I
- 13:21have more moments of making sure I'm using my
- 13:24wise mind being more mindful about my decisions than not Years
- 13:28ago. I was very impulsive very much in the moment And
- 13:32now like the the baseline in
- 13:35which I operate is with the wise mind, right? Does that
- 13:38mean I don't have emotions? Does that mean I don't feel that impulse that
- 13:41wants to bleed in? No, I I have all of those feelings But
- 13:45now they're not controlling me If you wanna
- 13:49work on not being controlled and feeling
- 13:52like you don't have any say-so in life and life is happening to you,
- 13:56you've gotta really work on being able to
- 13:59pause, being able to reflect. Now,
- 14:02there's importance in attention, like the importance
- 14:06of attention. So being intentional is so important because
- 14:11when you're able to act with intention, It
- 14:15involves purposeful, proactive choices based on understanding goals
- 14:19while reacting based on emotions as a spontaneous, impulsive
- 14:22response driven by immediate feelings. So intentionally acting
- 14:27allows for clear thinking and consider action while
- 14:31reacting can lead to impulse decisions and negative consequence. And
- 14:34I'll just give you a quick example, right? How many of you have
- 14:37said you wanted to start your day earlier in the morning? You
- 14:40wanted to get up so that you're not rushing into work. How
- 14:44many of you said I want to get up and do a walk or stretch raise your
- 14:47hand, right? I'm sure I can't see you, but I know a lot of
- 14:50people are raising their hands What happens in the morning in?
- 14:55the morning time You don't feel like
- 14:58getting up. So what do you do? You don't get up and
- 15:02then you snooze your alarm and then you find yourself in
- 15:06a space of Feeling like oh,
- 15:10i'll do this tomorrow and then rushing into work right now. You're starting
- 15:13your day Um with depletion not
- 15:16with giving when you give to yourself you oh my gosh, you could be so
- 15:20full and starting your day There may be a little traffic. Somebody
- 15:23may cut you off, but you're not finding yourself struggling as
- 15:27much Because you started your day with you and you feel replenished
- 15:32So how does that work if I don't want to go based off of my feeling
- 15:35if I want to do be intentional the night before Let's say I'm
- 15:39gonna do a stretch right the night before I'm setting my
- 15:42alarm as soon as my alarm goes off I'm jumping up
- 15:46If you stay in bed, your mind will talk you out of it. Your mind
- 15:49will tell you up. Well, maybe you could do it tomorrow, right? So
- 15:54if you want to think about why intentionality is
- 15:57important, because if we are not intentional about what we're choosing
- 16:00to do, we will be controlled by our feelings and our feelings change.
- 16:05How many times have you went to the gym or went to a workout class that you
- 16:08didn't feel like going? And you're like, oh, my gosh, this was actually not
- 16:12bad. Or how many times were you not going to go with a
- 16:15friend out and you went out and you're like, oh my gosh, I'm so
- 16:18glad I did it. Right. It's the starting. That's the hard part.
- 16:22But once you start and get there, you'll start to feel
- 16:25the replenishment that you need. You'll never get there if
- 16:28you don't start. Right. So if you want to think
- 16:32about, like, being intentional, how do I allow myself to
- 16:35not allow emotions to take over? Emotions are going to happen.
- 16:39We can't get around emotions. But how do I not allow it
- 16:42to take over through routine, through discipline and
- 16:45intentionality? Now some
- 16:49strategies for balance and emotion and logic, right? Because it's
- 16:53not only important for me to tell you what we're struggling with, but how
- 16:56do I challenge and work through it? Pausing and
- 17:00reflecting. So taking a moment to breathe and access your feelings before
- 17:04reacting, it's always good, right? So in
- 17:07order for you to, how do I take a moment to pause before I react? I
- 17:11need to notice when I'm struggling. How do I notice when I'm struggling getting
- 17:14more in tune with my body? Cause my body's giving me signs. Right.
- 17:18So taking time to pause and reflect is
- 17:21important. Journaling, great way to
- 17:25get more in tune with what's going on. How do
- 17:28I journal? Literally, like I have a guided journal, but even
- 17:32if you don't want to get my guided journal, There's a paper and
- 17:35a notebook, right? You can ask yourself the same questions
- 17:39every day to start the process, right? You can Google
- 17:42like what are some good questions to to ask myself at
- 17:46night? I'll tell you before we ask our children at night is How
- 17:50are you feeling? What are you grateful for? What did you do to prepare for tomorrow and
- 17:53what went well today? Those questions I did intentionally
- 17:57so that they can tap into how they're feeling tapping into like
- 18:01Understanding the gratitude in the day right because we
- 18:05get so caught up in the trauma and the drama of life
- 18:09That we forget what we have and when we forget what we have we
- 18:12feel miserable I would say there
- 18:15are people in third world countries that are walking
- 18:19around smiling with nowhere near
- 18:23the amount of material things that
- 18:26we have here in America, right? And so we
- 18:29have allowed life to consume us. And
- 18:33especially being black in america if you're a black woman working
- 18:36in corporate working in white spaces Right and
- 18:40you know when i'm working with people and they're talking about this stuff and i'm like It's
- 18:43not you it's the system you're in the system that doesn't see you but
- 18:47I need you to see you Like that's so important regardless
- 18:50of who sees me I need to see me and so because of
- 18:54all of these things we find ourselves struggling so Keeping
- 18:57a journal and reflecting will allow you to see things more
- 19:01clear, so you're not allowing life to consume you. Seeking
- 19:06feedback is another one. Um, so discussing feelings and decisions with
- 19:09trusted friends or mentors like people that you trust, right? Everybody's
- 19:13not bad and some people are blessed enough to have
- 19:16somebody that like a coach or a friend where they
- 19:19can bounce things off of and get clarity and get um
- 19:24more understanding And then the last thing I
- 19:27want to say is that identifying your core values so
- 19:33To identify your core values, you can start with reflecting on
- 19:36what truly matters to you in life. So you're gonna consider all
- 19:39your past experiences, identifying the principles you hold dear, and
- 19:43trying to narrow them down. So if you never thought about what your
- 19:47core values are, Some examples I
- 19:50got from an Instagrammer. Hey gold sister
- 19:54integrity leadership growth honesty accountability family fun
- 19:58stability faith creativity Adventure, these are
- 20:01just some values right now Let's say
- 20:05your core value is family. And
- 20:10I'm looking for another one, communication, right? Like it's important to
- 20:13me for me to take time with my family and to communicate
- 20:17with my partner. And if I sit down with myself and
- 20:20I'm always working, right? They have games,
- 20:24they have all these things going on. I'm never attending. Am I
- 20:27really truly living out my core values, right?
- 20:31I haven't put them in my calendar because I tell myself I don't have time.
- 20:35But then if I look at my phone and see how much I'm scrolling, right,
- 20:40we used to look at your values and then check your phone and then tell me
- 20:43you don't have time. If your phone is showing me that
- 20:47you are not on social media all day or not on YouTube
- 20:51watching things on Netflix, right? or games, these
- 20:54games get addictive. Look at your phone and then if
- 20:58everything is clear and you tell me you don't have time, I would love to hear from you. Let
- 21:01me know you don't have time because a lot of times we have
- 21:05time, but we allow society to
- 21:08consume us and then we start vegging out on our phones, vegging
- 21:12out on movies and shows. So if I'm gonna stick with
- 21:15the example of me saying family is important to me Like
- 21:19and I realize that I'm not Living out my core value
- 21:24Then I need to go back to the drawing board and start to look at
- 21:27what can I do to make this happen? A lot of
- 21:30times we have these core values that we haven't identified consciously,
- 21:34but they've been like growing up. If we look back, we'll be like, yeah,
- 21:38that, that wasn't me. That's what I said. I want it. If we really take time
- 21:41to reflect, we'll start to realize like, dang, you
- 21:44know what? Like I'm not living up my values. I'm not communicating
- 21:48with my spouse. I'm not living by faith. I'm living by fear.
- 21:53So strategies for balancing your emotion and
- 21:56logic, a huge part of it is being able to identify your core
- 21:59values. And once you identify them, make sure that you're walking
- 22:03in alignment with what that looks like. So
- 22:09this is something, emotion, logic, right? Both
- 22:12are important, but a lot of times we're allowing that emotion to
- 22:15take over. So my challenge to
- 22:19you, right, is to start to pay attention to what
- 22:22your body's saying, start to pay attention to your emotions. You
- 22:25can Google feelings chart, right? Grab a feelings chart, check in
- 22:29with how you're feeling. Everything starts with awareness
- 22:33if you're struggling in life and You're trying
- 22:37to figure out the next step start to pay attention to
- 22:40your day-to-day. What am I doing? What do I need? if
- 22:45you Google wellness will it'll show
- 22:48you a pie graph with like the different areas of your life social emotional
- 22:53Environmental professional and
- 22:56so to show you these areas you can start there and look at that
- 23:00and start to dissect Okay, what do I want in this area?
- 23:03What are my values in this area? What kind of work environment
- 23:07do I want? And I want to be clear that just
- 23:10because you become aware and understand what you want, it
- 23:14may take time to get there. But until you create a plan to work
- 23:17on getting there, you'll always find yourself feeling miserable. But
- 23:21if you work on creating a plan, you won't feel so
- 23:24miserable because you know like you're not going to be stuck in the same place. The
- 23:27reason why we feel miserable and feel stuck is because we're not doing anything to
- 23:31change it. Make today the day you start to do something to
- 23:34change it So I hope this was helpful. I hope this makes
- 23:37sense. I always tell people if anything I say resonates for you Understand
- 23:41you have the power to make the change, but you have to really start to have faith
- 23:44and believing in yourself You know when you start having
- 23:48faith when you believe in yourself, I promise you nobody can take
- 23:51that away from you The mind is so powerful which
- 23:55is why my wellness center is called Shifting the Way You Think, because
- 23:59my goal is to keep shifting, help people shift. Because
- 24:03if we're stuck, if we're not shifting our thought process, we're not
- 24:06growing. I wanna see you grow, right? If you wanna grow, continue
- 24:10listening to this podcast, because I'm always gonna come out with different
- 24:14nuggets that's gonna help you grow and help you see yourself the
- 24:17way life should look like, not versus what life has
- 24:20been like in the trauma that you've experienced. Like we're
- 24:24gonna acknowledge it, but we don't want that to be the lens on where we're seeing
- 24:27ourselves for the future Until next time beautiful people.
