- 0:02- Welcome to Pick Up and Deliver, the Podcast
- 0:06where I pick up my audio recorder as I leave the library
- 0:08and deliver an episode to you while I walk home.
- 0:11I'm Brendan Riley.
- 0:12(upbeat music)
- 0:14Good afternoon listeners, it's a lovely blustery day
- 0:23here in suburban Chicago.
- 0:25It's still late February, although if my math is correct,
- 0:29this episode's coming out in early March,
- 0:31so you're traveling back in time like a week.
- 0:36Yep, you know it.
- 0:37So I was looking back over episodes I'd done recently,
- 0:42trying to think about, like, what should I do?
- 0:43And I found a segment that I did like episode 680 or so
- 0:48that was meant to be kind of a new format,
- 0:52a new way to approach talking about board games
- 0:55and generally what I do with a new segment
- 0:58is if I enjoy doing it and I didn't hear from anyone
- 1:01that it was stupid, then I put it in the category of,
- 1:04'yeah, I can do that again.'
- 1:06This one of course is set up to be able to do 12 different
- 1:10episodes using this format.
- 1:12And so I figure if I do three or four a year
- 1:15in the next three seasons, I'll do all of them.
- 1:18Or am I doing more often?
- 1:19Who knows?
- 1:20We'll see.
- 1:21But this is board game astrology.
- 1:23I can't remember what I called it.
- 1:25The idea is that I look up a description of one of the
- 1:30astrological star signs and then I talk about games
- 1:33that people with that star sign might like.
- 1:36I do want to caveat, this isn't really a very important
- 1:39or significant or, to be frank, thing I think is real,
- 1:43but I find it interesting and reading the description
- 1:48did give me some keywords that I can use
- 1:50to come up with some game suggestions.
- 1:52So if you are a Pisces, meaning that your birthday
- 1:54was in late February through late March,
- 1:56you might be somebody who enjoys these games.
- 2:00So according to the webpage that I found,
- 2:02link in the show notes, the first keyword for Pisces
- 2:06is "intuitive."
- 2:07So what are some games... and I planed the keywords out,
- 2:10but I did not plan what games I'm gonna recommend.
- 2:12So this is off the top of the old dome.
- 2:14So what games are intuitive?
- 2:16Seems like the first game that comes to mind is The Mind.
- 2:21Now The Mind is a game that was really popular
- 2:23a couple several years ago.
- 2:25The premise is pretty simple.
- 2:26Everybody's got some cards in their hand
- 2:29and you're kind of working together to play them in order
- 2:32from lowest to highest.
- 2:34When your group is in sync, there's a really interesting
- 2:37element in which you play them in the right order
- 2:40and it's fascinating to kind of see how quickly people
- 2:44are able to get on the same wavelength and match up.
- 2:48Now you have to get through five rounds of the game.
- 2:51The fifth round is really hard because each round
- 2:54you get one more card.
- 2:55So the first round everybody gets one card.
- 2:57The fifth round everyone gets five cards,
- 2:58meaning if you're playing like three players,
- 3:00there are 15 cards that you need to play in order.
- 3:03And I think the game gives you like three lives.
- 3:05If you play in the wrong order, you lose a life
- 3:08and if you lose all three lives, the game's over.
- 3:11I think you can get an extra life at some point.
- 3:15And now that I think about it,
- 3:16maybe you play more than five rounds.
- 3:17I feel like you play more than five rounds.
- 3:19Maybe it's eight rounds?
- 3:20Oh, it depends on how many players you have.
- 3:22The more players you have, the fewer players,
- 3:25the more rounds.
- 3:26So a two player game, you have to play eight rounds.
- 3:28I guess so that the top one you're getting
- 3:30to 15 or 16 cards, which is the hardest mode.
- 3:33So the first and most intuitive game that I would think of,
- 3:37I would say is The Mind.
- 3:39Another game that I would put in this category is
- 3:42Mysterium or its slightly simpler
- 3:45sibling Mysterium Park.
- 3:47Both of these are games in which you are trying to communicate
- 3:50with one another using sort of abstract or dreamy pictures
- 3:55and trying to have the other person kind of get what you're
- 3:58saying based on those pictures.
- 4:00And so the elements that feel intuitive here
- 4:03are can I intuit what you were trying to say?
- 4:08Will we be able to connect on that level?
- 4:10And you can understand what I'm trying to say.
- 4:12There's an interesting element where the way that this works
- 4:15is the players collaboratively need to intuit what the ghost
- 4:21is trying to say solitarily.
- 4:24So there is an element of teamwork in trying
- 4:27to interpret the ghost's visions that feels a little bit
- 4:31different than intuition.
- 4:33But at the heart of it, if you are highly intuitive,
- 4:36I suspect Mysterium would be another game you'd enjoy it.
- 4:39And finally, it feels like a whole genre of games
- 4:42that run on intuition are social deduction games.
- 4:46So just for the sake of simplicity, let's say,
- 4:50The Resistance is a game that you would be very good at
- 4:54if you are somebody who is highly intuitive.
- 4:59So if you're a Pisces and the highly intuitive part
- 5:02fits your brand, perhaps you should try The Resistance
- 5:06in which you're trying to gauge, are these people lying to me
- 5:08or not?
- 5:09The next keyword that the profile offered was sympathetic
- 5:15or sensitive or empathetic.
- 5:17This one feels more like it's a whole category of games.
- 5:19If you're somebody who feels really sensitive when
- 5:22you have to do something that affects another player
- 5:27or maybe you get really affected by other players,
- 5:30one, maybe you want to go for cooperative games where you're
- 5:34not affecting another player negatively.
- 5:36You're not doing something to them.
- 5:38Although many cooperative games still do have an element
- 5:40in which I can make a mistake and screw our team up.
- 5:43There's an element also of games that allow us to play
- 5:46side by side and sure there's a winner,
- 5:48but it doesn't really feel like it's about winning.
- 5:50It feels like it's about doing a thing.
- 5:51Often these are games that involve building stuff,
- 5:53Agricola.
- 5:54Can feel really vicious if someone else takes the thing you want.
- 5:58But in my experience, most of the time,
- 6:00I'm fighting with you a little bit,
- 6:01but mostly I'm just fighting with the system,
- 6:03trying to find the best combination of things to do
- 6:06with the cards.
- 6:07And if I win, great, but what feels better is just
- 6:10if I feel like I did a good job.
- 6:12If I captured the system in a way that accelerated my score
- 6:15and resulted in a really interesting outcome,
- 6:19that's what makes Agricola feel interesting to me.
- 6:22So I guess I would say for the sensitive category,
- 6:27I would say, "Carebear games are probably the way to go."
- 6:32That you could do cooperative games or you do games that
- 6:35are heavily care-bear,
- 6:36or also sort of side-by-side non-interactive Euro games.
- 6:40You know, one of my favorite games that's like that
- 6:42is Bärenpark.
- 6:44Now Bärenpark definitely has some race elements to it.
- 6:46If I can see that you're going for a thing
- 6:48and I could get there a little faster,
- 6:49I can block you from getting the top reward
- 6:51or I can block you from getting that first statue.
- 6:54But for the most part, in Bärenpark,
- 6:56what I'm doing is wrestling with the tiles that are available
- 7:01and wrestling with the cards that I have
- 7:04or wrestling with the situation I'm in
- 7:06to try to just do the best I can.
- 7:08And sometimes that means I win, some people I don't,
- 7:11but it's a puzzle for myself more than a puzzle with you
- 7:14or a puzzle against you.
- 7:16And then of course, the most sensitive of sensitive games
- 7:19would be a C.
- 7:20This is a game from Kevin Wilson,
- 7:21who's, or Richard Launius, Kevin Wilson,
- 7:24who's a fairly prominent game designer of often
- 7:26Euro trash or a merit trash style games,
- 7:29American style games that have a significant amount
- 7:31of player conflict and luck.
- 7:33But Wilson also talked about having created this game
- 7:36just to relax and he showed it to some friends
- 7:39and they're like, yeah, you should publish this.
- 7:40It's a great little relaxation device.
- 7:43And so it's fun to have that available.
- 7:47So I would say if you're looking for a sensitive
- 7:49or empathetic games, you want to co-op something like Hanabi
- 7:54or you could have Care Bear games like Bärenpark
- 7:57or a game that's just about self soothing
- 8:00and self and that would be Gentle Rain.
- 8:03All right, next up it describes the symbol of the Pisces
- 8:06as two fish swimming in opposite directions.
- 8:09So kind of going the opposite direction from sympathetic,
- 8:12I'm thinking about like great two player games
- 8:14where you are swimming in opposite directions.
- 8:16It is a tug of war style two player game.
- 8:20My favorite of these is the sort of Reiner Knizia
- 8:24line of things that we have to challenge.
- 8:26Battle line is the sort of high version of that.
- 8:29I've never played Battle Line.
- 8:30I've always played Shotten Totten,
- 8:32but it's the same deal.
- 8:34Let me have Lost Cities, which is kind of the highest achievement
- 8:37in that category where you have a series of things
- 8:42that you're fighting over and you try to win them
- 8:46and you're doing that in competition with somebody else.
- 8:48More recently I played Drones versus Seagulls,
- 8:51which has a similar kind of pulling in opposite directions
- 8:55approach.
- 8:56So I could point to that as well if you're thinking
- 8:58about like two similar fish pulling in opposite directions.
- 9:02And then I would say as a third version of that,
- 9:04thinking about Seven Wonders duel.
- 9:06Seven Wonders duel is a really interesting version
- 9:09of that kind of game because we are just,
- 9:11we're going head to head and we have opposite approaches
- 9:15to things.
- 9:16I am trying to get some stuff you're trying to get another.
- 9:18And there are a couple places where we are competing
- 9:21to get there first like science tokens.
- 9:23If one of us gets enough science tokens,
- 9:25we automatically win.
- 9:26But there is a direct tug of war on the military track,
- 9:29where if I pull the military track toward me,
- 9:33it moves away from you.
- 9:34And if you let it get too far toward me, I win.
- 9:36So there is this really interesting back and forth
- 9:38going on in Seven Wonders duel that I think fits the approach
- 9:42really well and makes for an interesting game.
- 9:46So when we think about two fish swimming in opposite directions,
- 9:49I think of two player tug of war games.
- 9:52And those are three examples.
- 9:53Finally, the last element of Pisces,
- 9:55I like to just look at the icon itself.
- 9:58And that would be fish.
- 10:00I talked about two fish swimming in opposite directions,
- 10:02but I focused on the opposite directions part.
- 10:05Now let's think about the fish.
- 10:06What are some of my favorite games that involve fish?
- 10:09One that came to mind first was Oceans,
- 10:12which is the kind of newer version of evolution
- 10:15takes place in the ocean.
- 10:16That one I thought was fine, but it didn't really wow me.
- 10:20Another game that came to mind as a fish game is Finspan.
- 10:24I haven't tried that one yet.
- 10:26It seems to be a sort of lighter version of Wingspan
- 10:29less complicated in its fish themed apparently.
- 10:33Haven't played that one yet.
- 10:34I certainly would play it if someone put it in front of me,
- 10:36but Jenny and I really like Wingspan,
- 10:39so there's no reason for me to get one of the other spans.
- 10:42I thought Wyrmspan was fine,
- 10:44but I didn't like the extra complexity over Wingspan.
- 10:46And I suspect Finspan will be fine,
- 10:48but I won't like the under complexity.
- 10:51So what are some fish related games that I do like?
- 10:54Well, that's funny, as I was walking to the library
- 10:57in the previous episode, one of my neighbors
- 10:59came out and got in his car,
- 11:01and now that I am arriving home from the library,
- 11:04he is arriving home in his car as well, so that's funny.
- 11:07All right, so three more games that actually are about fish
- 11:10that I like.
- 11:11The first one I'll say is Fleet: the dice game.
- 11:14Now, I haven't played Fleet the card game a couple times.
- 11:17I thought it was fine, but Fleet: the dice game,
- 11:19is really interesting.
- 11:20It is sort of the first of the Matt Riddle, Ben Pinchback.
- 11:25What do they call them?
- 11:27Deluxe, not Deluxe, like loaded roll and writes,
- 11:30where you have just this huge array of things
- 11:33you can check off based on what you roll,
- 11:35and you get points based on these sort of cascading bonuses
- 11:39that you pick.
- 11:40So it's an element of kind of a little bit of playing your luck,
- 11:43but a lot of just sort of trying to mix those things together
- 11:46and get a nice cascaded bonuses.
- 11:49The second thing I'll point to as fish related
- 11:52would be Ark Nova.
- 11:54The Ark Nova Marine Worlds expansion particularly
- 11:56adds a significant number of fish to the board.
- 12:01It adds aquariums as a thing you can build,
- 12:04and it has this whole reef mechanism
- 12:05that I think is really interesting and fun.
- 12:07The fish are really expensive,
- 12:08but every time you add another one with a reef,
- 12:11it triggers again a whole bunch of times.
- 12:13So I really like the combination of things that happen
- 12:16when you have the reef creatures in your zoo.
- 12:20I also just like the fish that they've picked.
- 12:22They're fun to look at and it makes for a nice zoo
- 12:25if you get the chance.
- 12:26So the Ark Nova Marine World's expansion is a nice fit.
- 12:31And finally, the last game I want to point to
- 12:34as being a fun fish related game would be Nusfjord.
- 12:38Nusfjord is of course about a town full of fishing people.
- 12:42Players run fishing companies.
- 12:44You're trying to get lots of fish,
- 12:45and there's a big element in which your town has elders,
- 12:50and you wanna make sure that the elders are fed,
- 12:53but then they also help you with your company.
- 12:56And so like the wisdom of the elders helps with the company.
- 12:59And of course the resource that you're trading in,
- 13:03a lot of the time is fish.
- 13:05You're spending fish to do everything.
- 13:07So Nusfjord is perhaps the most fish focused game
- 13:10that I have even though it's really about a business.
- 13:12Now that I'm thinking about paying for things with fish,
- 13:14I will offer a honorable mention to Isle of Cats,
- 13:18which also uses fish as the main currency.
- 13:20You pay fish to catch the cats and to buy the cards.
- 13:23So.
- 13:24Well that's about it for Pisces related games for me.
- 13:30If you are a Pisces head over to Boardgamegeek Guild 3269
