- 0:45Welcome back to the boundary Corner podcast.
- 0:49I am Curtis Wilson, I'm Brian seagull buddy.
- 0:52We're here on a Wednesday night. How you feeling tonight, man?
- 0:55Happy winds-day, happy hump day feeling, good man, excited about
- 1:00this episode, dude. So for example, this has been
- 1:03one, it's been. I've been cooking for a while,
- 1:06cook it for. What about five?
- 1:08Six weeks. Yeah, you guys are pretty sweet.
- 1:14You guys got me. Kind of hyped last night when we
- 1:16chatted about 20 minutes about some of the things, y'all are
- 1:20seeing and which are expecting. So I can't wait for this
- 1:24episode, man. And let's not even, let's not
- 1:28even wait, let's go ahead. Let's bring on our friend coach
- 1:31Robbie Compton. What's up?
- 1:37How you doing, man? Hang in there, man.
- 1:40Where are you? Dude, I am, I am in my in my
- 1:44office in the field house at the high school that coach at North
- 1:47Wilkesboro, North Carolina. Whole may be threatening, a hold
- 1:52of this shit. The North Wilkesboro Vikings are
- 1:57truly. This is truly going to be
- 1:59chalked out there like you're in the element where I'll bring
- 2:02Michael. Yeah, a couple bodies around.
- 2:17They give us a little demo. Yeah, let's do the deal man.
- 2:29I'll probably stay up as long as I can.
- 2:30I got get tooth pulled in the morning so I want to be as tight
- 2:33as possible on. Hey, I don't blame you do that.
- 2:35Yeah. Abscess tooth right there, so so
- 2:40we'll stay as well. We will prolong this episode as
- 2:43long as you can, so we can send you to bed.
- 2:45Late, get you up early. All right, so guys what we're
- 2:51going to be doing here about two months ago after Brent Pride was
- 2:54hired, Brian obviously has an offensive knack for the game.
- 2:59You played offensive line as did Robbie but Robbie ever since
- 3:02he's pretty much been coaching has primarily focused on
- 3:06defense. So what we wanted to do was
- 3:10robbing took a look at Brent prize defense, obviously
- 3:14something you are already familiar with because of who he
- 3:16was, where he plays a bit. Robbie looked Brown looked at
- 3:20Tyler Bowens offense from the Fordham days with Little Joe
- 3:24Moorhead. So what we're going to do guys
- 3:26is we're going to dive into this and we're going to start with
- 3:28the defensive side of the ball. So Ravi let's start with this.
- 3:32Give me some ideas of what type of schemes Brent, pry, or Chris
- 3:39Marv will give Chris Marsh out because he is the defensive
- 3:42coordinator in name. We just get a Fields, can be a
- 3:45lot of Brent pry handprints on this defense.
- 3:48You what kind of scheme are we looking at here, I'm gonna be
- 3:53honest with you, looking at it reading a lot of things, trying
- 3:56to figure some stuff out. I know I've got a lot of
- 4:02influence from Bud Foster, and I've done a lot of things in my
- 4:06coaching, career, looking at a lot of things he does for his
- 4:10for, for his original 44 and how he adapted, so many different
- 4:14things and The big thing you'll notice with brick Pride, as he
- 4:22was a ga at Virginia Tech. And when when coach Foster
- 4:27started a lot of that, a lot of his original 44, and He coach
- 4:36Foster got a little bit into the 4-3 away from before, for give
- 4:40it a little bit, he always had that hybrid type player moved
- 4:43around. He can still see you some of the
- 4:45same principles and then as the game adapted, offenses, started
- 4:49spreading out, more things like that, you meant more to a 42.
- 4:54Well, as we all know, we had, you know, coach Hamilton come in
- 4:57in Virginia Tech. He had that same Bud Foster.
- 5:06Flavor to it. Yeah but he was much later into
- 5:10the career. Okay, so he had a lot of
- 5:12influence from the later for two principles.
- 5:17I think we're coach cry, you going to see a lot more of the A
- 5:22lot more, the original, okay 43, and it's going to be very
- 5:27aggressive. It's going to be, you're going
- 5:31to have three true linebackers. Now, you may see them aligned
- 5:34differently and it looks more like a 42 but the way the way
- 5:39they're going to align will see later.
- 5:41I'll show you a couple things later.
- 5:43The alignment is going to look more like a 42.
- 5:45They're still going to play with a lot of for three principles.
- 5:48And you're going to see that from position group to position
- 5:51group that that that really going to play true.
- 5:54And the reason I talk so much about Coach prize part in it is
- 5:59you do have Chris Martin. Who's the defensive coordinator?
- 6:03Okay, Mark played under Brent prior at Vanderbilt.
- 6:08Yep. With Vanderbilt with Coach Pride
- 6:11was defensive coordinator under Franklin.
- 6:15Who's now Penn State where you just came from they travel
- 6:18together? Marcus is, I think you're stuck
- 6:23a lot to those same routes a lot to what he was taught there.
- 6:28and, In a game of football with it.
- 6:32Comes a defense. There's It's not so much a
- 6:37selfishness but what it comes down to is Bargains, gonna Mark
- 6:41knows that he played under prior and he knows exactly what he
- 6:44expects. Prize will have a hard time to
- 6:47give it up that play-calling after doing it for so many
- 6:50years. Fry knows that it's his job you
- 6:55know when the gate when it comes down to it, if the whole team is
- 6:58successful they don't come. And look at the offensive
- 7:01coordinator, defensive coordinator and say, you guys
- 7:05are what happened. They go to the head coach.
- 7:09So he's going to keep his hands on those dates and bars are
- 7:12good, enough, coach, and good enough, he's played in the
- 7:15system, he knows what is good expect and you could, I think
- 7:20you're going to see that there. Recruiting group with Coach
- 7:25probably energy a earlier and you got a certain defensive line
- 7:31coach, who was a player at that time, he's been through that
- 7:35system. Marv was taught that system as
- 7:38proud as teaching. It you've got two safeties
- 7:41coaching Pearson Prelude, who played in that system.
- 7:46The system's going to stay pretty consistent to what pride
- 7:50is used to and I think Mars going to tend to work towards
- 7:54that. That that's what I'm thinking.
- 7:57But everything. I've read everything.
- 8:00I've looked at you, you see a lot of that flavor that Pride
- 8:07always put out there and what more does.
- 8:10Now, Mart has some athletes at Florida State and some other
- 8:14places he had. Add that were a little different
- 8:17that he could do some other things with those were
- 8:19adjustments, every defensive coach of the world should be
- 8:22making some kind of adjustments depending on the Personnel.
- 8:25They have. So you have to take those things
- 8:28into effect, but I think when you really look at it, you're
- 8:30going to, you're going to see that old school aggressive, you
- 8:36know, filling gaps, get to the football attacking football and
- 8:41going to let the secondary. They're going to stop the run
- 8:44first. Secondly, they're going to stop
- 8:47the run. Third, they're going to worry
- 8:50about somebody to Bike, Run option and stop that run.
- 8:53And then they're not going to let big plays beat a very deep.
- 8:58I need that. That's what you get to see.
- 9:01You're not going to see a lot of a lot.
- 9:03I don't think early, especially early on, you're not going to
- 9:06see a lot of weird coverages and robbers and things of that.
- 9:11Nature you go see some split coverages you'll see a cover,
- 9:14two on one side to cover for on the other.
- 9:18But you'll see. I mean you got to see the basis
- 9:24of what Virginia Tech remembers as hard-nosed football or
- 9:27defensive side. That's what I feel like you're
- 9:29going to see. And his philosophy is that hard.
- 9:37Those get to the football to fill the gaps.
- 9:41Simple. Get to the football.
- 9:43I mean, that's his philosophy. That's his, that's what they're
- 9:47going to do. Is it what everybody's going to
- 9:49buy into that? Is it one of those things where,
- 9:51Where you talk about robbers different zones.
- 9:55Is he, one of those guys where it's I'm keeping it simple
- 9:57because I don't want this to type these feet.
- 10:01I want to sway fast Christ. It's not going to be Yummy,
- 10:07you're gonna get, you're gonna get some things that are gonna
- 10:10like I said, with Personnel that are going to help them that
- 10:12they'd be able to do better than other teams to do this and that
- 10:16but you're not going to get these exotic blitzes and crazy.
- 10:22Rolling coverage has all the way across fields to cover certain
- 10:25things. And in some cases, people doubt,
- 10:29you know, in today's game where offenses run rpos and things
- 10:35like that, rpos may give this defense trouble earlier.
- 10:40It is what it is because they're going to be focused so hard on
- 10:44shut down that wrong. And when you get, when you get
- 10:47that run read, he pops the throw it.
- 10:50You might have a linebacker that's going to have to learn
- 10:52how to slow play a little bit more instead of attacking full
- 10:55speed. But you're going to, he's going
- 10:58to start finding those that linebacker that can play down
- 11:04and recover quick. Arabic.
- 11:07You just the Personnel is going to make those make those things
- 11:11easier and I think it's I think that's a lot of where they're
- 11:14headed and very fast flow team. You're not going to see a lot of
- 11:20sitting on the heels and and you know waiting to see if it's pass
- 11:25or run. Is we're going to play to run
- 11:26right now we're going to get you is that always seemed like magic
- 11:36I expect. So, especially the front five or
- 11:38six going to be anymore anymore, half penetration and, and widen
- 11:46things out. It's we going to get football,
- 11:48Buddy. Oh yeah.
- 11:49It's it's going to be Darryl Tapp and and that crowd going to
- 11:53get stuff. I mean, you look, if you look at
- 11:57the staff and the people, they've hired they're going back
- 12:01to what Virginia Tech has and they're bringing the influence
- 12:04in the West. That used to be praline.
- 12:07A DB has been added as an analyst.
- 12:10Yeah, I mean that kind of football player.
- 12:14I mean if they could bring back they call it be a lot of in
- 12:16salty. Be a lot of people crying.
- 12:20I mean you might instill dress those two out and play.
- 12:23I know coach tap and I've seen him lately.
- 12:25I know he could dress up. Yo, yeah, you're right now.
- 12:29Seen him to and looking at a DB doesn't look if you'd like he's
- 12:32far off either. Oh my God.
- 12:34No, it doesn't know. It doesn't.
- 12:36It and it's sort of funny because you do have to from the
- 12:4095 team where Wooden Boats Bud started that to be in the co DC
- 12:44and it was slowly built but let's get it as Robbie.
- 12:48You did everything in one great thing that you got skiing we
- 12:51talked philosophies where her Tendencies about attacking.
- 12:54Let's start looking at the individual Parts.
- 12:56I want to get some ideas. I want to start on the d-line.
- 12:59Let's talk about JC prices group.
- 13:00Let's start with the defensive tackles.
- 13:03All right. What is the base alignment going
- 13:05to look like like against 11 personnel?
- 13:08You're gonna I guess it 11 personnel.
- 13:11You're going to see and it's funny because we were just
- 13:15talking about I was just having meetings with our Middle School
- 13:18coaches. We had my head coach here and
- 13:22you know we said we're 11, personnel people don't
- 13:25understand that. That's a, that's a tight end and
- 13:27a running back personnel. You're going to see.
- 13:32You're going to see a basic more than likely you're going to see
- 13:36a basic. It's a 4-3, but you're saying
- 13:41backers going to be a little wider up front.
- 13:43You're going to have a 2 IQ, a shade depending on probably
- 13:47where your where your weakness is on the offensive line.
- 13:51You know, if you've got a if you've got a monster guard
- 13:56That's killing things. You're not going to shade the
- 13:59center because it's going to give him to angle D.
- 14:01Take your TT. You're going to move him over
- 14:04and make it harder for that monster block.
- 14:06All right. So is this me both defensive?
- 14:08Tackles are going to be two shades know.
- 14:11We're talking about, what would they would?
- 14:13They would they would probably call the nose, okay?
- 14:16Okay, he's going to be, I would say he'd probably be able to, I
- 14:21To a shade. The pit at the sitter's.
- 14:23The one that's the horse for the team.
- 14:27If the guard is he's gonna move around a little bit there.
- 14:30Okay. You go.
- 14:31See a three technique opposite in the tackle position.
- 14:37You're going to see more traditional defensive line, but
- 14:39I think I'm talking used to 330s Big Boys at filling holes.
- 14:48I mean, unless you can find a I'm here a Donald is gonna blow
- 14:53that thing up into three technique.
- 14:55You're going to get big boys at a filling holes and going after
- 14:58stuff. You're going to, you're going to
- 14:59see The Return of the the old Tim settles and those tight
- 15:04guys. The big guys that can fill in
- 15:07gaps and wreak havoc in there. Alright, I know the last couple
- 15:11of years, you've had some little bit smaller guys that were
- 15:14little more athletic and try to stretch a field up front.
- 15:19We're going to we're going to see The Return of those.
- 15:21Those big defensive tackles and hard rushing defensive ends.
- 15:26All right, so give me your kind of hitting on a dare with is the
- 15:32defensive tackle run. Responsible, is it just going to
- 15:34be too clogged the gaps to essentially make it a to Gap?
- 15:37Like simply take off. They're gonna they're gonna
- 15:41penetrate those gaps. Okay, they're gonna get some
- 15:43penetration, they're going to try to play, they're gonna try
- 15:46to get it. Try to get that guy covered up
- 15:49and and catch it from the back side. while there while they're
- 15:54running through gaps, I'll be there going to be chasing balls
- 15:57down because that guy's when we try to get away from everything
- 15:59up front, But they're going to close it in albion's.
- 16:03You're going to have a five technique with a tight end.
- 16:05You're probably going to have a seven baby at eight.
- 16:09It may be May line up on the inside shoulder to fight him.
- 16:12Maybe head up depending on whether they're counting on that
- 16:14tight end a lot. In the past game.
- 16:19That's what we do. You know, if the tight ends in
- 16:21the pass game, a lot of and put them in his face.
- 16:24Slowing down. He's a Blocker of a sudden, a
- 16:27guy inside of him. Make sure I got Gap
- 16:29responsibilities today outside. Make him block one day on.
- 16:33He can't take care of the guy outside of it.
- 16:36That makes me feel. Yeah, makes sense running five
- 16:39and seven techniques on defensive end, running a to
- 16:42shade of three technique online. I'm if you're out there and
- 16:46you're listening to now, he's gonna have some video and stuff
- 16:48later. Go to Google.
- 16:50You can find where these techniques are and you'll
- 16:52understand the alignment. Rob, he's talking about here.
- 16:54I'm gonna go back to defensive tackles real quick.
- 16:56You talked about what they're going to do in the Run game.
- 16:59What are we going to see from them and like a pass rush game,
- 17:02what are they are going to be other going to stun?
- 17:04There's it going to be slant so we because that's definitely
- 17:06remember from Bud offensive. Tackle slamming a lot.
- 17:10You're going to see, you're going to see a lot of movement,
- 17:13you're going to see a lot of Swanton and maybe some twists
- 17:15and stuff but I think early on, you're going to see a lot of You
- 17:23got to see a lot of basic slanting, not a lot of twisting,
- 17:28my lot of Crossing early on because you are going to want to
- 17:33be Gap responsible. Okay.
- 17:36When you start to twist into things like that, why would
- 17:38start moving and exchanging blocks Lima start pulling on
- 17:44twist. You start to lose Gap
- 17:46responsibilities in places. I don't think you're going to
- 17:50see a lot of that early own. I've got one.
- 17:54If you want to pull it up around here, the Personnel here.
- 18:02I think that's what's going to be a basic look for.
- 18:04And you see here, there's a lot of Slayton into the gaps are
- 18:08taken away and be gaps. With the with the liner and you
- 18:13have the linebackers ready to play through a gap and C Gap
- 18:17here. Just Gap sound football and I
- 18:22think that's going to be the biggest thing.
- 18:24And the thing is that they're going to play fast, they want to
- 18:26be aggressive. And I want to play quick to the
- 18:29ball, not anything messing around and wondering.
- 18:34If they say, if you know, a seven of the three-star twisted
- 18:38and one guard pulls, you lose a gap, you know, at least things
- 18:43open. You won't have that with a lot
- 18:45of this stuff here, that's what I mean.
- 18:48This is something that prize run a lot at Penn State.
- 18:51This is a lot of his base look and don't be surprised to see
- 18:54them. Run a lot of bass early.
- 18:58I don't expect a lot of different things especially how
- 19:01to describe ring until they can get this base stuff down.
- 19:06And it shouldn't take long because it should be simple.
- 19:08Yeah, I'm gonna do a quick shout out here.
- 19:10This is Robbie comfort in loves, Brandon Patterson at Tech
- 19:14Sidelines, because Riley didn't have to draw all this stuff up.
- 19:17When he had read his article and find the video.
- 19:20So shout out Brandon Patterson, the text Sidelines.
- 19:23All right, Brian. We'll all right, rob, you got it
- 19:25up here. You've already talked about the
- 19:275 and the 7 techniques. Give me a little Run game
- 19:32responsibility for the ends. Give me a little what we're
- 19:35going to see. Earthwise from these guys, the
- 19:37five home pass rush wise. I mean they're going to go after
- 19:42it now, they're going to be getting after that quarterback.
- 19:45If he if he's if he's spending a lot of time in the back, looking
- 19:49for anything down field, he's gonna have a hard time they're
- 19:52going to come after. As far as the Run game goes,
- 19:56like I said with it with the rpos and things of teams like to
- 19:59run now. If you look at this particular
- 20:04base formation with the wheel, coming around that edge as well,
- 20:07trying to help seal, you're going to get some Blitz out of
- 20:10that. But you think that our po you
- 20:15know you got this boundary Corner backing up and you having
- 20:18sex come in on a slant, what a Wheels evacuating right there,
- 20:22the slat could be there. But like we said before, we've
- 20:27got a man. Now coaching safeties, who's
- 20:29playing this system? Who knows what to do this safety
- 20:33coming down. He's going to meet it quick.
- 20:36You're going to give some catches in here, but you're
- 20:39going to you're not going to get a lot of yards hoping for not a
- 20:41lot of yards after the catch. They catch you.
- 20:44They're gonna pay for it. Yes, we're getting, we're
- 20:47getting five guys coming to the football and try to get after
- 20:50the quarterback. He cried bargain either one or
- 20:55afraid to Blitz. Anything?
- 20:58If you're not going to see I expect you will see probably 60%
- 21:04of the game that it is at least five people coming after thing
- 21:07at all times. Damn, let me ask you this.
- 21:11We talked a little bit about the pass game in the Run game.
- 21:14If they're playing a heavy, read-option team is the
- 21:19defensive end. Are they attacking the mesh
- 21:21Point? What are they doing?
- 21:23Are they slow playing it? By the looks of what we've got
- 21:26here. I'll be expecting.
- 21:28The, the five, the five of the seven are probably going to be
- 21:33probably going to be attacking the mesh and going after the
- 21:36quarterback. Okay, going back to that point.
- 21:40I'm thinking that the free safety coming down to help.
- 21:44And this say, I'm that split wider who's playing this hookah
- 21:48curled in the past, he's going to be, he's going to be a
- 21:51Blitzer sometimes out of this area.
- 21:53He's gonna be the guy going after.
- 21:55That picture. Let me ask this Robbie about,
- 21:59you talk about Brian asked about the mesh point, and you say, hit
- 22:02the quarterback. You think this is just a
- 22:04philosophy thing from prior that says, don't worry about the
- 22:08running back. We've got guys behind you.
- 22:09They can clean that up. Make that quarterback think,
- 22:13every time he touches the ball, and it's a read, I'm going to
- 22:17hit you. I don't care if you give it to
- 22:19the running back, I'm going to pop your ass.
- 22:22What? It's a it's an option, it's
- 22:24option. Just like that.
- 22:26We tell our players all the time.
- 22:28I got a certain player, every play.
- 22:30If you've got a certain Gap, you've got the quarterback in an
- 22:32option. And they'll ask me all the time.
- 22:35Well, if it's not an option, what do I have?
- 22:39Will you still make you a lot of that quarterback that mesh
- 22:41point? Just in case he comes out and
- 22:44runs his, he comes out and runs as far as I'm concerned.
- 22:47It's just like he's running an option.
- 22:49Yeah, it's also about force of them.
- 22:51Predictable outcome, right? So if you if you're running at
- 22:54the mesh Point, more than likely that's going to, if the
- 22:58quarterback is reading properly, he's going to give and giving
- 23:01creates a little more predictable outcome and how your
- 23:03defense is aligned. And if we if we force him to
- 23:06give it because he don't want to get popped from that guy, come
- 23:09In that then I've got three other guys outside of that mesh
- 23:12point that are there to make it play on that ball.
- 23:15Anyway. Yep.
- 23:17So I forced them into exactly what I wanted.
- 23:20But I've got myself covered, if he pulls it, good deal.
- 23:28I mean it's it's going to be back to a lot and the front
- 23:33Ian's, not a lot different than what they've been doing, but we
- 23:37haven't seen Virginia Tech. Play that option.
- 23:41Look, the triple option look and stuff like that, where they used
- 23:44to play every year, Georgia Tech and things like that in the last
- 23:47couple of years. Georgia Tech's kind of gotten
- 23:49away from it. Where are their coaches?
- 23:53Right out here with us right now, he's helping a local high
- 23:56school out of here in Western North Carolina.
- 23:59Is it is Paul Johnson really doing that.
- 24:01All Johnson is innate, he lives in Avery County, which is up the
- 24:05mountain here and do you want to play him next year from a little
- 24:09bit? Are you having to play him next
- 24:11year? No, we spend it with the
- 24:14beginning of this year. So they're still giving the same
- 24:39type of look just in a different option, believe it or not.
- 24:47All right, let's jump into this because you've already mentioned
- 24:50will mics? And let's talk about the
- 24:52linebacker group a little bit. And luckily you got this up
- 24:56here, is this going to be kind of the look?
- 24:59We see all the time with that saying, far out, or is this a
- 25:03more of a movable piece? This here.
- 25:08If you ask me, just judging the way.
- 25:10He's done so many things and I've got some of the same
- 25:13things. You're Sam is going to be To a
- 25:18typical coach Sam backer is your strong backer, he's standing
- 25:23beside the Mike, he's playing strong inside against the road
- 25:29in this particular scheme is a little different.
- 25:31That's Sam Is going to play to the wide side of the field.
- 25:36He's going to be the athletic guy.
- 25:38He's gonna be the one that they can play out wider.
- 25:41He can Blitz from wide and still get there.
- 25:45He can play the hook to curl, which one is what?
- 25:49I call hot too. He can play a Zone there and
- 25:52still recover. It's like for an RPO, it fake,
- 25:56the Run, he comes down, he can get back.
- 25:59They're going to be that kind of guy good prototype for that.
- 26:05If you really look, you go back to some of his Penn State stuff
- 26:10and Michael Parsons The guys are Cowboy, please stand the fact
- 26:14that he's a Cowboy is a phenomenal football player.
- 26:20And he can play, he could play in any of the three positions on
- 26:23the field. But he's athletic enough to play
- 26:26coverage, Glazer, run and play both at the same time, kind of,
- 26:30he needs to, that's the kind of guy that they're going to look
- 26:33for it. That's a spot.
- 26:34So, what would just recently happen with tech in the last, I
- 26:38guess, two or three weeks as they moved to kid?
- 26:41Kids who were in the secondary. They're out of Salem.
- 26:44The McDonald twins. What do they 63-64?
- 26:47Brian about 220? Yeah.
- 26:50Yeah, pretty athletic. Kids long and lean.
- 26:53And they were expected to be like playing safety or maybe
- 26:56even playing Corner based on their size.
- 26:58But prize immediately moved them it does that shock you based on
- 27:03what you see with him want to do with like the same with the that
- 27:06position that's possible. But the thing is, they can also
- 27:13be, they can also fit in the wheel position the way they run
- 27:17it because the will backer is not your typical.
- 27:23Drug stuffer kind of guy either. He's athletic.
- 27:29He's he's going to be able to play some coverage, but he's
- 27:35going to be, he's going to be a Blitzer.
- 27:38He's going to be a guy running around the edge.
- 27:40He's going to be a More of a hybrid defensive end linebacker
- 27:46type guy. Okay.
- 27:49I mean so you can see those guys in the you said they're twins,
- 27:52there's two of them, there's two of them so there could be one of
- 27:55each side okay? They can be printed one for
- 27:58each. I mean you know the only thing I
- 28:01feel 100% confident about is that Mike players I could tell
- 28:05you who is going to be the and he's gonna wear number four, he
- 28:11is going to crush. I've been watching this kid,
- 28:15I've been coaching at North Carolina for 11 years now,
- 28:20People in North Carolina? No hudak's Holyfield is In this
- 28:25is this is the system that was made for him.
- 28:28It's why he can't want to play in Bud system.
- 28:30He plays for a couple years, but leaves, he does not have the
- 28:34best two years in ham system. I'm assuming because of the
- 28:38difference in responsibilities for the mic for ham versus what
- 28:43sighs. What if it's a guy that played
- 28:44out of position in Bud system than two years, he was in it and
- 28:47then as you please? Yeah, and then now he, you know,
- 28:51didn't really find a good fit in in ham system, Oh yeah, we're
- 28:56finally probably going to get a look at what the essentially the
- 29:00the maximal version of deck solid feel like necklace from
- 29:08the sevens in inside butt. Cheek to the fires outside butt
- 29:12cheek and make any play two tries to come in there.
- 29:15He covered that. I mean, he's a damn, he'll
- 29:18attack thing football player. It is that looked like is in
- 29:22this system. Yes, we'll tighten versus am
- 29:26field of tap. Now he's gonna have some
- 29:27coverage responsibilities and you know things are going across
- 29:32his face in the middle. He's going to be he's going to
- 29:36remind you of those old-school linebackers that they had in
- 29:38there. I mean he that's Holyfield can
- 29:44can make it anything on payday. This year with a great season at
- 29:50that my position. Hey my opinion.
- 29:53Okay. And he's going to her, I think
- 29:55he's going to redeem himself, and he's going to be.
- 29:59He's the guy that I feel confident is going to make the
- 30:02rest of this work with these linebackers.
- 30:06Like I don't know a lot about their defensive linemen and
- 30:09who's back, who's coming back and who sits where?
- 30:13But I know that's only field and I know that's gonna That's going
- 30:17to play well for them with little.
- 30:22I know they've got a couple of good recruits from out here in
- 30:24this area. The gossip Mill kid that had
- 30:29played right here in our backyard for a couple years at
- 30:32Surry County. Now he's a Carroll County in
- 30:35Virginia, it's whole family moved up there That kid, he
- 30:42could be a, he could be a sad guy.
- 30:46He could be a defensive end guy. I don't know what their plan is
- 30:50with him. He could be a tyrant Andrea I
- 30:53mean he's played he played on both sides of the ball he played
- 30:56a couple different positions on defense.
- 30:58Yeah, it's not my back outside linebacker and run it back.
- 31:06You David, had kids played it. So let's talk about another
- 31:09player that I know we've kind of talked about a lot on here and
- 31:12we talked about a little bit with you.
- 31:14Let's talk about Alan Tisdale. Is he somebody you think that
- 31:18can be that kind of Sam type backer in this new system?
- 31:23I think he I think looking at it, he may be there.
- 31:27He may be the most prototypical of what they have right now,
- 31:32okay? But like we said, he's had some
- 31:36up and downs but he's played in multiple different systems.
- 31:39He come in looking at Bud, Foster system, and they had him
- 31:43in places and moved them around and they switch to Hamilton
- 31:46system. He may have been out of position
- 31:48and moving around some inconsistencies.
- 31:52Some of those may have come from just different positions and the
- 31:55different Aunt types of offenses, they require Look Bob
- 32:00that with with some mistakes and and some inconsistencies in
- 32:04other positions and it makes everybody look bad.
- 32:06Yeah, whatever he's playing. Well, everybody looks good but
- 32:10guys when one person plays bad and nobody looks good.
- 32:14Yeah. I mean it's as bad as that I
- 32:17mean it could have been the safety could have been having a
- 32:19bad game. Linebackers may have been a good
- 32:22position but they look bad because of the safety wasn't
- 32:25where they were. We we talked about Over here all
- 32:28the time. If safeties bad on the field and
- 32:32everybody else can be doing everything.
- 32:34Perfect. But now you got to 30, 40 yard,
- 32:36gain on the run. I mean, it worse thing in the
- 32:39world of football player can do is try to play two positions of
- 32:43one time. Okay.
- 32:44I'm playing my position, but I know this guy is not doing what
- 32:47he's supposed to do. Then you try to fill that you
- 32:49take away from yours. Then, both of you are wrong.
- 32:52Yep. I mean, but I think I think it's
- 32:57an opportunity. To, he can really redeem
- 32:58himself. I think he and I think he could
- 33:01play will I think he could play either one of those spots but I
- 33:05think just by looking at coming back which coming back there.
- 33:10He probably fits that mold more than more than others.
- 33:14Okay. And I said it, because I coach
- 33:16linebackers. So, I see I've seen more of
- 33:20their linebackers and things, that's why I'm not quite as You
- 33:26know, up to date on the on, who's coming back, who's playing
- 33:30with the other positions because I see a lot linebacker stuff.
- 33:34I use a lot of that stuff on a daily basis so you talked about
- 33:38will a little bit. Let's talk about that. 11 other
- 33:41backer in that group kishan artist is he going to be a guy
- 33:46that you think it also filling it will?
- 33:47I know he's got a little bit of a heavier shoulder than it is
- 33:50Dale. So might be a little bit better
- 33:52against the run and those responsibilities.
- 33:55I think about I think I think Tuesday in my opinion looking at
- 33:59the way they do things, I think I would start with just a leader
- 34:03will Holyfield in Mike and I mean artist and then we'll only
- 34:10filtered to Mike and his day lat the Sam just because I think
- 34:15kids there's a little bit more of an athlete.
- 34:18Yeah he's going to be better to mix it back and forth and artist
- 34:23is going to be artist is going to be a guy that can They can
- 34:26really help and support things cutting back.
- 34:29Really feel it. In the back side, he can Blitz
- 34:32off rounded Edge. I mean I really think he's he
- 34:36fits their of those three guys in the coming back that they can
- 34:39they can count on. Can I can I say some or as
- 34:43something else? Rah, because you mentioned this
- 34:45yesterday. We didn't see all three of those
- 34:49guys on the field. A lot in J Hamm system, but
- 34:51something you said yesterday about, Brent prai, is he
- 34:55maximizes? Who's on the field?
- 34:57He would rather have his three. Best linebackers then.
- 35:01Well, here's my best fit for Mike.
- 35:04Here's my best fit for will. Here's my best fit for sammis.
- 35:06Like, no, screw that. These are my three best
- 35:08linebackers. They're going to be on the
- 35:10field. Yeah.
- 35:12They heat, he's very much. We can get the best out of
- 35:19things with what's on the field rather than changing a lot of
- 35:22things around, okay? You're going to get teams that
- 35:25are going to go out there, they're not going to have the
- 35:26tight end, they're going to be in a spread, we might need them
- 35:29nickel set, okay? You're going to start to look
- 35:32at. Can we get that out of the Sam
- 35:37and cover that, that hook, the curl area and keep our safety?
- 35:42A little deeper to help us there and keep the wheel covering the
- 35:46edge rather than switching out of nickel and doing that.
- 35:50Okay. But one thing you will see from
- 35:53what I've seen is, when they go to a nickel, the say I'm a
- 35:57wheel. That comes out.
- 36:01The nickel is going to go into the corner and their best
- 36:05corners probably going to go in on the slop.
- 36:09It sounds weird but I think what they're doing is not times out
- 36:12of 10, you're going to find the most athletic receivers probably
- 36:16going to be at slot. You deeper guys are set by
- 36:19boundaries there, more possession, type guys, or blow
- 36:23the roof off of things. So they're not, you know,
- 36:26they're running two outs in the verticals.
- 36:29And the things like that the slot receivers are the guys
- 36:31running to The Comebacks in the pigtails and curly cues.
- 36:38Whatever the hell you want to call all these crazy little
- 36:40routes? They come up with now and you
- 36:43got to have you put that vest corner on that guy.
- 36:46He's not gonna get away from that stuff as much.
- 36:48Okay. All right.
- 36:49Well I mean but yeah you got to see a lot of three linebacker
- 36:53sets. Good deal.
- 36:56You're not going to see him change.
- 36:57A lot of personnel, a lot of and you'll see some defensive line
- 37:02rotation because he you're going to be penetrating so much.
- 37:05He's got coming up and running and it's a 300 310 pounds.
- 37:11You know, three or four plays, we got to get some more out
- 37:13there and keep it going. That's the big thing that's not
- 37:16changing from what we saw in J Hamm system to what we're seeing
- 37:20with prize that they're going to be rotating defensive lineman at
- 37:24a regular basis. We're probably going to need at
- 37:26least 10 Deep at d-line guys that are going to see
- 37:30significant steps in a given game.
- 37:32I would I would say so good. Deal you mentioned it already.
- 37:36So let's let's let's kind of let's just get it back in there
- 37:38in the secondary. First of all, you Told us you
- 37:42know, Derrick Jones the cornerbacks got I coach Jones
- 37:47and I have had some conversations a few times.
- 37:50He spent he was at Duke for a while.
- 37:52Yeah, we had a few players while I was in wrote at Rose and
- 37:57Greenville that Duke recruited pretty hard.
- 38:02So I particularly wide receiver may be a defensive lineman.
- 38:06A couple of the guys, we had some other guys that they
- 38:09recruited to because we had We had some very intelligent young
- 38:14men to that, they did some some walk on stuff with.
- 38:20We never got anybody to Duke but I mean, he was always a great
- 38:26one to deal with great one to talk to I'm glad to have him on
- 38:30our side now. He's he's a phenomenal DB coach
- 38:35now and that's one thing back in the Heyday of Virginia Tech's
- 38:40best defense is they are Ways had always had a great DB coach
- 38:45coach. Gray was a phenomenal individual
- 38:48when he getting those DB ready. And I think From knowing coach
- 38:53gray and and now coach Cheetos, a lot of that same personality.
- 39:00He's, you know, very positive upbeat but but he's they're
- 39:06going to be aggressive, they're gonna be playing, they're gonna
- 39:07be ballplayers and he's gonna have him.
- 39:12He's gonna have those, especially, those Corners.
- 39:14I think, is where he's gonna spend most of his time.
- 39:16Folks, here is those quarters. He strictly Corners coach,
- 39:19They're Gonna Be Ready. They're going to be football
- 39:22player. You're going to.
- 39:25Virginia Tech's got to be back to that DB you feel pretty
- 39:29quick. I expect the deal.
- 39:31I will come down to that recruiting part which is one of
- 39:34his best assets by far. The guy got four stars to do
- 39:39that yourself. You don't need to say anything
- 39:41else. It's like he got talented
- 39:43players to do cats. Yep let me ask this because you
- 39:47talked about him being a phenomenal coach, you know what
- 39:52are we going to see from this back-end on the corner in?
- 39:54Are they They zone. Is it a lot?
- 39:56Amanda's Pride, more mix it up. What do you expect to pick me
- 40:00up? There's going to be a lot of.
- 40:02I think you're going to see some split coverage.
- 40:04You're going to see some cover for one side cover to to the
- 40:07other. You're going to have corner and
- 40:09safety probably on the boundary side.
- 40:13So you're going to, you're going to see a lot of boundary Corner
- 40:18field corner and bouncy. Safety field.
- 40:21Safety, not so, not as much free safety, strong safety because of
- 40:27the way they play their will and saying Both on your safeties are
- 40:31going to be able to play deeper but they're going to be able to
- 40:34come down and play in the mix around.
- 40:36It linebacker area as well. Okay, I got 12, I would love to
- 40:42see The Edmonds kid that plays for the Steelers Back In This
- 40:51Crowd. Because that that kind of safety
- 40:56is going to be amazing. They could play well in coverage
- 41:00play like a free safety, but doesn't mind coming down and
- 41:02hitting people as a strong safety.
- 41:06You go back in for junior text history.
- 41:07You find a lot of those. You find that kind of guy.
- 41:10You look at Kam Chancellor who could Rock anything.
- 41:14But he could play sideline to sideline as a safety to Pearson.
- 41:20Pray lose the same way we use. Not them.
- 41:24You got that history and safety, and now, that guy's coaching
- 41:28those safety. So, let me, let me ask this our
- 41:32I know early, in, in buds, tenure Or the corners.
- 41:38Swapped depending on where the, where the ball was on.
- 41:41The hash are the corner switch inside, or they switched
- 41:43responsibilities. I think the quarters are going
- 41:47to. It's hard to say, right out
- 41:50front, right up front. In some, in some cases with
- 41:55Coach pry, they've switched responsibilities.
- 41:59In some cases he said him switch sides.
- 42:04Marv has been more of a switch responsibility guy and not
- 42:07switching Corners as much. Okay, you have this
- 42:11responsibility in the boundary, this responsibility in the
- 42:14field. Gotcha.
- 42:15Both of them had the tendency to flip the safeties.
- 42:18Yeah, well, it easier, the safety of a field safety little
- 42:22bit easier to do without having to run run, sideline to
- 42:26sideline. Yeah.
- 42:28That'll give you more of a true strong safety.
- 42:31Free safety. Look.
- 42:33But sometimes they'll leave the safeties and they fought the
- 42:35corners. It's just going to depend.
- 42:37But like I said, you're going to see in a nickel set.
- 42:40They're going to take that best corner and put them on a nickel
- 42:42and bring the number three quarter in and put it on the
- 42:44outside and see. In some cases but coconut and
- 42:49when you notice every wise, I think you're going to see a lot
- 42:52more Zone coverage early. And because of that split
- 42:57coverage Concepts, they like to run, it's going to be a lot more
- 43:00split coverage, so a lot more Zone and this zone is going to
- 43:05help them to with the Blitz and packages and play in fast.
- 43:12Can I ask a quick question kind of an obvious question here,
- 43:15you're talking about the safeties moving kind of, you
- 43:19talked about Darrell Edmonds where you need do it alls.
- 43:22So for the safeties, are you almost looking like There's not
- 43:26going to be a strictly Rover, strong safety, strictly free
- 43:30safety. You're going to have maybe
- 43:32almost Mirror Image guys because of what he asked them to do
- 43:36because of how it rotates or is. It always going to be one guy?
- 43:39Maybe six. 2205 one guy 63 200. Its range here.
- 43:48I think you're going to depending on who makes that call
- 43:51and I think it depends on kind of who how the recruiting goes.
- 43:56Okay. I think you could see a little
- 43:58bit of both I think you can see one guy dominant.
- 44:03They're going to they're good. They're going to be a group
- 44:06that's going to use what's best available and If the best
- 44:09available is the long-range, you free, safety.
- 44:12You're going to see those safeties clip.
- 44:14You're going to have the field safety and the boundary safety.
- 44:17If you have, two guys that are so much alike and they can do
- 44:21both things, you may not see them flip, you may see them just
- 44:24switched responsibility, go get it.
- 44:26No, it's not to feel himself. That's going to be the biggest
- 44:30thing with him. And the best part is with Coach
- 44:35Prelude is some people are going to doubt him at the beginning
- 44:39because if I'm correct he's got what a year or two coaching
- 44:43experience High School coach down at Radford High School for
- 44:46two years and he's been Player Development.
- 44:49Okay. So a lot of people, a lot of
- 44:51people are they question that higher because he had no real
- 44:56prior College coaching? perience, although the guy
- 44:59played in the NFL close to 14 years for numerous to very well
- 45:04I walk. I'm a I'm a Washington fan.
- 45:10I've been a Virginia Tech fan for a long time, Pearson
- 45:14Prelude. Has been heralded, he played a
- 45:18buffalo, he played in Washington those guys, heralded him as a
- 45:22leader on the field as a coach on the field, he always knew
- 45:26what was going on. Two years of high school in one
- 45:30year, in the college, ranks of coaching that cat's been
- 45:33coaching a long time at 14 years in there.
- 45:37I know it Washington towards the end of his career.
- 45:40People talk about how he could we could guide and set up a
- 45:43secondary and help a lot of young players.
- 45:48He's been coaching players long before he started coaching.
- 45:53Yeah, yeah. Say yeah.
- 45:54Yeah, yeah. Oh, he's going to understand.
- 45:57And especially being back in the system that he played me in and
- 46:00he knows he's going to be able to provide the insight to what
- 46:05they're seeing show them the things that he knows that he can
- 46:09see. Okay, we always had, I've always
- 46:13had college football players and coach at high school level and
- 46:19it's the hardest thing in the world to get a college or
- 46:22professional level athlete. The coach at high school level.
- 46:26One thing because they can do things that some kids can't do.
- 46:32Yep. And they have a hard time
- 46:35teaching it to the kids because the kids not athletic enough to
- 46:38do it. He's going to be at a level now
- 46:41where he's going to be able to show kids that are as athletic
- 46:44as he ever was and he can get them to do those things.
- 46:49He is immigrated situation. So I mean with all of those I
- 46:54think you know, a lot of is going to come with, they're
- 46:58going to find it. Best 11 athletes put out there
- 47:00in those positions. And whether you're flipping or
- 47:04changing responsibilities as a going to depend a lot on coupons
- 47:09out those positions as what I feel like, gotcha.
- 47:12Good deal will Robbie. You got a few of the few videos
- 47:16there. I know some of them were from
- 47:17Tech sideline. So show us a couple that you
- 47:20want to just kind of highlight to say, look for these plays,
- 47:24like this is going to be a staple or a base.
- 47:29Okay, right here. This is from Penn State.
- 47:36You can see. Their basic alignment.
- 47:41You've got to set a, you've got your, your, your five technique
- 47:45over here, and your 7 inches a little bit wider.
- 47:48There's just no tight in. You got your will dancing in I
- 47:54think this might be against Ohio State, it is or lasted just four
- 47:59fields of quarterback. So you've got a phenomenal
- 48:04Center and a phenomenal going. You're going to get a big-time
- 48:07double team here on this too. I anyway, so might as well play
- 48:11me to. I get a little wider.
- 48:13Make this Center move over to work as double-team, possibly
- 48:18give us a hole in here to work with You can see the wheel
- 48:23walking up to Sam's out of the picture over here and then we've
- 48:27got our Mike in here. It's just your base, okay,
- 48:34you're going to see them. Get the penetration, you're
- 48:37going to see the will drop back in.
- 48:40They didn't get to double-team on this side but you're starting
- 48:43to see here that granted this is several years into their
- 48:46program. Yeah they're getting some twists
- 48:49and as I said with that twist, if you've got the two I and the
- 48:55end coming in their leaves, this Gap here.
- 48:59Okay. This is the thing that they're
- 49:02going to want to make sure that they're not doing early.
- 49:05Oh okay. Now they've kind of figured it
- 49:09out. They know that they got two guys
- 49:11that can come in and feel it. It feels takes off but there was
- 49:14no running back back here to threaten that whole to start
- 49:18with. The Twist is not hurting them
- 49:21too bad. But you see how the you see how
- 49:26the might takes on right here in the hole when he drops back and
- 49:30they closed it in. Now the ends got to do better
- 49:33about getting across the face, to really, take away the Gap.
- 49:36In here, to make sure Fields can't take off, but he's looking
- 49:41to throw it anyway. So it works out.
- 49:45Now, every defense I've ever coached, every defense has ever
- 49:48been coached, you're going to have a hole somewhere.
- 49:51You're not going to be to fill everything, so you got to put it
- 49:54in a place where it's not going to hurt you as much.
- 49:57They're just taking a chance with it.
- 49:59There he didn't send but for their I think you're going to
- 50:04see five a lot. That's just our, you know, their
- 50:09base defensive look. You'll see right here at the end
- 50:12of the clip. You'll see the say I'm over here
- 50:17dropping into the hole. coming across the safety's coming down
- 50:23there playing deep but you know Ohio State's a teammate like to
- 50:27stretch a field pretty good and So they're going to be playing a
- 50:34little bit deeper. Yep.
- 50:35For those who are listening this.
- 50:38On the podcast, visit our YouTube site, you can actually
- 50:41see the videos. Robbie's describing pointing it
- 50:43out. Is there a blitz on there
- 50:47Robbie? You can show maybe one of the
- 50:49staple blitzes that we should see this upcoming season.
- 50:54Yeah, I've got to go to the other article.
- 50:58One other thing I want to show you, you were asking earlier
- 51:01about the defensive ends. And about their Russian and
- 51:04things. Here's one.
- 51:10Against Pitt. You'll see the defensive end.
- 51:15He comes in underneath coming down, hard running right into
- 51:19it. He takes on.
- 51:22Just the way it is annoying. But you'll see him here, he
- 51:30comes in underneath. The the tight end or the tackle
- 51:34here. Yeah, and he takes on the pool.
- 51:39Where it should be kicking out and he gives it will back her
- 51:42time to come in and attack it. He is right off the pool to it
- 51:47has to go around it. Yeah, he makes the hunt disrupt.
- 51:51A lot of things he got underneath the day, en, Bloc and
- 51:54still was able to wrong arm. The puller Ass.
- 51:59That's tough stuff. Do they?
- 52:00And you talk about that mesh Point go back.
- 52:03Just a couple steps. We talked about mesh Point
- 52:06earlier, Nothing load, watch one.
- 52:10The number six comes off. Watch right here.
- 52:12He's here, he's not hesitating. He's going right for the
- 52:15quarterback. He does not break inside until
- 52:18he knows that balls off. Like so his ears are down.
- 52:22He's going to hit Kenny Pickett, right?
- 52:23If that is Kenny Thicket, he's going to hit some bikini
- 52:26pigment. Can you pick a play?
- 52:28Five years? Has got to be kidding frigate.
- 52:35In this situation, it would be You talked about it earlier
- 52:42angle is aimed at the quarterback.
- 52:44Once he sees it there's the hump and he's right there to clean it
- 52:48up. That's right.
- 52:50And I say what I said tight end to tackle he's number 77 but
- 52:54he's the third man over. Yep, he's technically in a tight
- 52:57end position. So we got 27 technique.
- 53:00He's coming underneath it hard and will is coming over it.
- 53:05Tommy and the wheels running the wheels running right here.
- 53:09Right. At the back.
- 53:10This man right here is running right at the quarterback in that
- 53:12mesh Point. Yep.
- 53:14Every season he forces him to hand it.
- 53:17He hits it right in the mouth and that guy comes right
- 53:19through. Again, go to you.
- 53:29Go to our YouTube channel CDs. Let's get that Blitz.
- 53:31One up, Robbie one more video. And then I've got one more
- 53:37question. Ask you before we head to break
- 53:40one more? Sorry, Brian you're good.
- 53:42I love your questions. Ma'am.
- 53:44You know me, let's see. Let's see.
- 53:46One of those blitzes. and, What we might as well say, it's going
- 53:52to be a two-hour episode. Here's if you pull this out
- 53:56here's some of their coverage. Looks this is their simple over
- 54:00cover. It's a cover three.
- 54:04Like we said there have the two safeties, what you're going to
- 54:06see that one safety come down underneath to help out.
- 54:10So you'll have the for underneath in the 3D.
- 54:14It's just it's just a simple over cover.
- 54:16Three you're going to give one of the safeties here.
- 54:20It has the boundary safety in the field safety with the
- 54:23corners dropping. The field safety coming down.
- 54:26The boundary safety coming over. This one doesn't have the Sam
- 54:31quite as wide. Sometimes the same will be a
- 54:35little bit wider because you got a balanced set.
- 54:38You got the tight end opposite of a tight ends on this side.
- 54:42You're more likely going to have its am a little bit wider with
- 54:45the free safety over top of it and you might get some opposite
- 54:48role there. Then you got your over cover to
- 54:56where basically you're sending the corner and the safety in the
- 54:59coverage and you're dropping five Out Underneath.
- 55:04But this one, I cut we call it cover 62.
- 55:09They're running a cover two on one side, cover for on the oven
- 55:12if you really think about it. Cover six, four and two.
- 55:15Yep, you six we run at my high school.
- 55:21We run. We're going to we're going to
- 55:23man this guy up on a single receiver side and played the
- 55:27safety over top, like a cover one, on the other side, we're
- 55:30going to play cover for. You can call it quarter half,
- 55:33you can call it. Over six, you know?
- 55:35Yeah. I mean, they're they're going to
- 55:39play, they're going to leave the man in the flat area here with
- 55:43the corner and let him go. It opens the hole for a quick
- 55:47pop through here. But, you know, like I said,
- 55:52everything has a hole, you just, you just have to find it.
- 55:55You have to be quick enough to find it in that place.
- 55:58Yep. And when you talk about
- 55:59aggression, the fact that you're being aggressive means you're
- 56:03you're limiting the time that they have to find those holes
- 56:06absolutely. But when these four right here
- 56:09and one of these, two guys, if not two of them are running at
- 56:13your quarterback, you ain't thinking about that whole,
- 56:16you're thinking about the one that you got is about to be
- 56:18split, open her further, there we go.
- 56:23That's what I'm working on this year with are guys, as we have
- 56:26to be able to get more pressure and that's why we're going to
- 56:31run more of a three like a stack.
- 56:33Look the 33. So I've got six guys that I
- 56:37know. We're going to fill holes, but
- 56:39I've got, you know, five linebackers.
- 56:42You don't know which ones coming when so you offensive lines and
- 56:47High School. I'm not very good if they do do
- 56:52it. I'm not very good at doing
- 56:53reading. And Blitzen coming from, you
- 56:58know, one guy coming from this Edge and one guy coming from,
- 57:00stop over here. Yep, it's hard to read them.
- 57:03Somebody's gonna get their the uncovered guys.
- 57:06Not good at picking up both reads.
- 57:09Yeah, now our head coach, he's office of my Guru.
- 57:15We've got are kids do reading amazingly.
- 57:20We gave up in our in our 10 games last year, we gave up
- 57:24three sacks and 10 games and high school.
- 57:30It's impressive that you tell you something.
- 57:31But now we're out of the gun and we're catching balls, throw the
- 57:37ball. We're not five-step dropping
- 57:40were throwing things quit, we're throwing screens hitches.
- 57:44You know, that kind of thing. We're Tom Brady in this thing.
- 57:48Now, we don't want our quarterback getting Hit, we're
- 57:52playing teams that are taken by step drops.
- 57:56I got to get a man down there and make him move around.
- 57:59Okay. Yep.
- 58:02Some of the blitzes and stuff we see here.
- 58:04Cute, choose one, choose one that you like the most in one
- 58:09you might use this year. This, this I think is what
- 58:13you're going to see more of, okay.
- 58:15Sprite coach Marv as a five-man blitz.
- 58:24Don't go too fast. You see, you got your, I mean,
- 58:27they're overloaded and tap the tight ends here, tackles moved
- 58:31over doesn't change anything. You still go with your alignment
- 58:35that 25 technique on the tackle. I mean, really tight in keeps
- 58:39him from releasing hard, but it we're not changing their
- 58:42alignment too much if you see here.
- 58:45Now, we went to a shade and we went to the guy inside here
- 58:50instead. And of him being that instead of
- 58:54him being a little wider, he's down inside.
- 58:57He's a Type 3 instead of being a little bit looser and we've got
- 59:01to stand up guy here. Well we brought the Sam in a
- 59:06little bit more. Now we've got that for three,
- 59:10maybe even a 3/4 look, 34 looks he's standing up. just because
- 59:17of the way, it's blitzing the same person, Elder this is still
- 59:22your will, then you slide these guys over You get to squeeze
- 59:29inside, you get it coming inside and you get these guys coming in
- 59:34and around. Hey mr.
- 59:41Pickett has a hard time getting away because he's old if he's
- 59:46been there since Marino left as a safety Blitz in it.
- 59:53Because that comes in, right? Watch.
- 1:00:00He's waiting. 36 comes down. Oh no that's a linebacker.
- 1:00:04That's a lion. 36 replaces the saying he was coming down in
- 1:00:17something. You said that some Pearson
- 1:00:19Prelude did back in the for four days and he'll probably going to
- 1:00:23happen as this one comes over to please.
- 1:00:26Don't worry that 3 over the top and then they'll bring these
- 1:00:29linebackers. But even here, something told
- 1:00:35them to drop the wheel here. In this situation, to cover the
- 1:00:44hole over there. Probably the way they like the
- 1:00:48fluid. As you can see with the guy the
- 1:00:52back out, they floated it. So they got to take it away.
- 1:00:55Quit with the back. Five man stuff and then you got,
- 1:01:01you got numbers on that side because they were overloaded
- 1:01:04goes the flood. So you got, you got too many too
- 1:01:07many guys to block on that tight.
- 1:01:09Inside one more your six-man, blind, they're probably they're
- 1:01:15bringing the for the bringing, the Sam, they drop the rest of
- 1:01:18them. And he steps up and there's no
- 1:01:22way to go because they plug app, so for the stuff and everything
- 1:01:27in there. And so you got you got pressure
- 1:01:30coming from both Hedges. They're plugging and pushing the
- 1:01:32Gap. Yep.
- 1:01:35It's Michigan. And right there.
- 1:01:40Got him. Yep, it deal.
- 1:01:44High pressure. Pressure is going to be big for
- 1:01:47him in a lot of situations. Do you think we'll see even more
- 1:01:52pressure this year being you? I don't think so just just one
- 1:01:59of those things where it's more attacked on.
- 1:02:01Don't let the back in on 20 covered just attack.
- 1:02:04Yeah because they're going to be so focused on stopping that run
- 1:02:08and we so focused on getting penetration up front and the
- 1:02:12linebackers coming and filling that it's going to turn into to
- 1:02:17pressure situation when they get to the, when they get that
- 1:02:20pressure. When they get that penetration,
- 1:02:22then they see a past, you might see Yes, I am got a bad back out
- 1:02:28of it a little bit, but if that will is taken off and Will's
- 1:02:31going, he might have to run it down from the back but he's
- 1:02:34going to get things because they've already replaced him
- 1:02:37with that safety coming down. So you're going to see them
- 1:02:40those four and five guys really going after the quarterback
- 1:02:45could do well Robbie we appreciate you going over this
- 1:02:49diving looking at tape reading articles using your own
- 1:02:53knowledge of Brent price system to give us some more info.
- 1:02:56I'm going to shout again. Brandon Patterson over at ESL
- 1:02:59with those, with the videos with some of the drawings.
- 1:03:02I'm sure that made your life a lot easier than ever to figure
- 1:03:05that out of element draw it. But what we're gonna do right

- 1:03:37Dash report. Now back to the episode All
- 1:03:43right, Brian. The show is yours.
- 1:03:46My friend. Let's start and take a look at
- 1:03:49Tyler Bowens offense. Let's first of all, let's look
- 1:03:52at the scheme and the philosophies in the Tendencies
- 1:03:55from your reading and reviewing of tape.
- 1:03:57What you're seeing from what we should see next year.
- 1:04:01So based on everything that I've seen from calling back and
- 1:04:04forward them from calling the Penn State bowl game.
- 1:04:08After Ricky Ronnie left, we're looking at a power or Smash
- 1:04:12Mouth RPO system, mostly going to be run out of shotgun.
- 1:04:16You're going to occasionally see some pistol.
- 1:04:19Use a lot of run to set up. The play action to set up that
- 1:04:22are po. Like to take shots off the play
- 1:04:25action versus straight drives. Usually a straight drop is going
- 1:04:29to be more of an intermediate route as the primary.
- 1:04:32Whereas, if they're targeting deep down the field, it's going
- 1:04:35to be off those play actions. They do a solid mix of Gap in
- 1:04:39zone blocking Concepts, handful of elements of their offense,
- 1:04:45but they deploy them a lot of different ways.
- 1:04:47So you don't have a ton of plays but you have them deployed at a
- 1:04:51lot of different formations. Different looks and they're not
- 1:04:57very screen heavy. They are in their Arsenal,
- 1:05:00you'll see them run a handful of times a game.
- 1:05:03Usually it's going to be something that's like a swing
- 1:05:05out. Sometimes part of a our POS
- 1:05:07sometimes just a straight design screen usually to the running
- 1:05:11back, sometimes to the tight end into the slot, they love to
- 1:05:15attack the weak side of the formation, both in the run and
- 1:05:18the pass and they do a lot of check with me but not as
- 1:05:22exclusively as we saw. With Brad Carl Nelson.
- 1:05:26It's a little more sporadic every play check.
- 1:05:31Yeah. It's not it's not that heavy.
- 1:05:33It's it's definitely a little more sporadic.
- 1:05:35But you know, depending on situation depending on game
- 1:05:39Flow, sometimes they'll go with their but usually when they when
- 1:05:45they're cooking, it's definitely, no huddle.
- 1:05:48Hurry up there, trying to get the play in, get to the line,
- 1:05:52get it run and keep that. Moving like philosophy wise.
- 1:05:57Are we looking 50/50 is this more call it?
- 1:06:01A power. Say it again.
- 1:06:03Howard power. Smash Mouth RPO.
- 1:06:06Yeah, okay fifty-fifty I hear power, Smash Mouth.
- 1:06:11I think running the ball. We're going to run the ball more
- 1:06:13or less. You're definitely going to be
- 1:06:16north of that 50%. I think you're going to be close
- 1:06:18to like 55 60, but it's going to be still fairly balanced.
- 1:06:23It's not Not going to be all different.
- 1:06:27Yeah. You're not you're not going to
- 1:06:29see. You're not going to see it being
- 1:06:31you know that 6570 percent it's but it's still going to be
- 1:06:34something that they lean on to set up the rest of their offense
- 1:06:39in terms of personnel. I mean we're looking at a lot of
- 1:06:4311 and 12 they'll occasionally go with a 20 look, sometimes
- 1:06:47split with the quarterback sometimes in a go-go set with
- 1:06:51twin running backs, either to the left or the right of the
- 1:06:53course. Back.
- 1:06:55Usually, the tight end is almost always on the field and they're
- 1:07:02almost always either in a wing or split out Flex.
- 1:07:06They're not in line unless they go trips, the Titan will line up
- 1:07:12in line opposite the trips or if they bring in a second tight end
- 1:07:17when they go kind of offset, offset look with an H back and
- 1:07:21in line tight and that's really the only time you see The tight
- 1:07:24end line up in line. How often do we see in two tight
- 1:07:28ends? I'd say about thermal that 35%
- 1:07:33of the time? You're going to see them in in
- 1:07:35two tight ends sets, Okay? Usually it's going to be one
- 1:07:38tight end. Like I said, they're either
- 1:07:41going to be in the wing or split out as that.
- 1:07:43Number two guy on the trip side, they will go unbalanced trip.
- 1:07:51So overload and you'll see that look sometimes he's as well.
- 1:07:55Usually they like to run out of that though.
- 1:07:58I good deal. Well, let's start here.
- 1:08:02I've got a document it and if this is the direction I assume
- 1:08:05you want to go. Yeah.
- 1:08:07Based on who you are. When I also heard you talk about
- 1:08:11gout or Gap in zone, obviously, they broke Rudolph in Robbie
- 1:08:21Robbie. You got your mic off me?
- 1:08:22I don't think we can hear you. Hey, Rudolph.
- 1:08:44So let's intention with the interior offensive line in the
- 1:09:01Run game. What are we looking at with
- 1:09:04those three guys? I mean you're looking at a lot
- 1:09:07of like I said, Zach Zone and GAP scheme.
- 1:09:11Unique out of balance guys. In the middle.
- 1:09:13There you need a center. That's really smart.
- 1:09:16That's going to make. Those calls makes those checks.
- 1:09:19You need guards that are athletic that can pull that can
- 1:09:23deliver a blow on the run that can block some in space.
- 1:09:29They're not asked to do a ton of that most of the screens even
- 1:09:34you don't necessarily have Lyman lead out on those, but with the
- 1:09:37amount of pulls that we have, you get definitely have to have
- 1:09:40Hers. Lineman, especially guards that
- 1:09:43can get around. Get up at the second level
- 1:09:46block, a linebacker and then do a lot of cloud.
- 1:09:49Kick-outs so especially with the guards there.
- 1:09:53So you know occasionally you're going to see the big thing for
- 1:09:59the guards especially when you're pulling on the on some of
- 1:10:02these are POS got to be aware of depth.
- 1:10:06That's one thing I know we brand some RPO in Corn system, this is
- 1:10:12a lot heavier, it's RPO, probably 65, 70 percent of the
- 1:10:18time. There's going to be some rbo
- 1:10:19element out there when there's a run call so line.
- 1:10:25We got to be aware of their depth, especially on those gaps
- 1:10:28scheme rpos? We're yet Lyman pulling across
- 1:10:31the formation. All right, what about tackles
- 1:10:36and run getting? What are we looking at there?
- 1:10:39Because, you know, we did two years ago, have one of the
- 1:10:43better tackles in the entire country who proved his work this
- 1:10:48year with the Vikings. What are we looking at tackle
- 1:10:52wise doing in the Run game. So tackles are going to also
- 1:10:55need to be a little bit more balance because the tackles are
- 1:10:58going to be asked to do a lot more in the pool game as well.
- 1:11:00So they don't pull quite as much as the guards.
- 1:11:04But they are pulling a lot, they're kicking their rapping on
- 1:11:09the dark play, the power dark. So there's a lot of different
- 1:11:15things that they have to do, but they also have to be able to
- 1:11:17have good bend, be quick to be able to stop those speed rushes
- 1:11:21and guys that are getting low around the edge.
- 1:11:28What's the mix that? You are singing between that
- 1:11:31zone in power because I think that's going to be Wisconsin to
- 1:11:36me. Did it so beautifully?
- 1:11:38Like like you know they be pulling a guard like on a pin
- 1:11:41and Pull and then the next thing you know, they're running some
- 1:11:44Zone play where it's like an outside Zone.
- 1:11:47You're like a it's impressive that a coach can teach both
- 1:11:52techniques and both techniques be really good but what do you
- 1:11:57foresee And with Boeing, I mean, he's got a guy at his disposal
- 1:12:01where he can, the guy can teach kids how to do it, but what are
- 1:12:06you going to be a 50/50, or do you think we're going to lean
- 1:12:08one way or the other? So it looking at the games that
- 1:12:13bow and called he really kind of goes by feel of it and how the
- 1:12:16defense is handling one or the other.
- 1:12:19So I'll talk about it later. But just example in the bowl
- 1:12:23game against Memphis in the Cotton Bowl, in 2019, when he
- 1:12:27was calling Plays early on there was a lot of the more Gap
- 1:12:32Orient. It calls, Memphis was doing a
- 1:12:34pretty good job at those early second quarter.
- 1:12:38He started adjusting a lot more of the Zone, run calls more
- 1:12:42success, started popping off, some big runs with journey Brown
- 1:12:47and a couple was at Noah Cain. Had a couple big runs in that
- 1:12:51game, so you know, he definitely it's a flow thing and he was
- 1:12:55able to adjust pretty. Quickly to what Memphis was
- 1:13:00doing and kind of find a fit in the Run game because they really
- 1:13:03do want to lean on the run and let the Run setup what they like
- 1:13:07to do in the passing game, both in the rp0 and the drawback.
- 1:13:11I know I know what are guys even at the high school level.
- 1:13:15I mean we were just talking about tonight with Adam touches
- 1:13:18the we run we have our track counter and power and got boys
- 1:13:23are hard power. Please then we have our insides
- 1:13:26owner outside Zone and I stretch looks that are all Zone looks
- 1:13:31and what we're doing is we're looking at what the defense is
- 1:13:33giving us. If there's if they're stacking
- 1:13:36guys then it makes things owns real easy.
- 1:13:39If you stack you can And and that those athletic guards help
- 1:13:44that regardless of their size they can, they can can push back
- 1:13:49climb to the next level while a man takes over.
- 1:13:51We called Scoops the switch. Yep, we can hit those up but if
- 1:13:56you give a you get a defense, kind of like what I expect to be
- 1:14:00running, we're spreading out that front, it might be a little
- 1:14:02bit easier to kick out. You find that 3 and 7 and it
- 1:14:06gives you more space on that side.
- 1:14:08You can really pin and Pull and take advantage of some stuff.
- 1:14:11Having both of those in there is going to be.
- 1:14:14I think it would be great to see you.
- 1:14:15Again, it lets you pick your poison a little bit and you can
- 1:14:18kind of feel, how are they, how are they working for you?
- 1:14:22How were they trying to attack your line?
- 1:14:24And kind of adjust accordingly. It gives you a little bit more
- 1:14:27of an option where you're not kind of locked into.
- 1:14:30All right, well, I've got to run inside outside Zone all day.
- 1:14:33That's my bread and butter. If that's not working, I'm going
- 1:14:36to have a long day. And as a defensive coach, we see
- 1:14:40a lot now. A lot of teams are going to Zone
- 1:14:45with their rpos because it gets that they get such a hard float,
- 1:14:49going one way and then they can pop it back to the back side.
- 1:14:53What if you got a team that's spread out?
- 1:14:55That's not going so hard with that flow, they keep that player
- 1:14:59they can can help them on the back side.
- 1:15:01Then it takes some of that RPO away.
- 1:15:03Why not go ahead and take advantage of it and run that
- 1:15:07that hard Gap pounded right in Manpower them with it?
- 1:15:11So I mean I have both of them with you if your exposure we
- 1:15:15have a hard time with it being able to prepare for both.
- 1:15:19But I mean we're going to see teams that are going to do a lot
- 1:15:22of that. A lot of that zone and RPO.
- 1:15:25That's why we're stacking guys up there and it gives us a guys
- 1:15:28out of the edge that we can take away from her and once what what
- 1:15:32do you decide what you want to say?
- 1:15:33First, I just found it refreshing that he after one
- 1:15:37quarter, made that quick adjustment, Because a lot of
- 1:15:40coaches would continue to sit in say, this is eventually going to
- 1:15:44work. We're 15 minutes go by, you're
- 1:15:47not having much success. This was our initial game plan
- 1:15:51and I'm sure if I'm going against Memphis, the thought was
- 1:15:54were probably bigger than them. So running the gaps, we're going
- 1:15:58to be able to push them around obviously you know what are you
- 1:16:02know, Ryan was coaching that point one knee.
- 1:16:05He was the interim head coach, right?
- 1:16:08I know it wasn't your old coach from Sydney.
- 1:16:11Yeah, he was in her head coach. That was his first game as a
- 1:16:13coach, as yes. He had.
- 1:16:15That thought of take that away, but Boeing instead of hesitating
- 1:16:20changes gears, I'm going Zone. And then the next thing, you
- 1:16:23know, I know they scored 50. Plus points was impressive in
- 1:16:25that game. Well, the big thing so they had
- 1:16:28one touchdown in the first quarter that came kind of late
- 1:16:30in the first quarter went into halftime with 35 points.
- 1:16:35They go All right, Brian. I'ma let you run through this
- 1:16:39pass game sets for the entire offensive line.
- 1:16:42What are we seeing inside and outside?
- 1:16:45So one thing that I like and you know we talked about this is
- 1:16:50that we've got the play action, we've got the RPO that takes a
- 1:16:54lot of the pin, their ears back moments for the defense.
- 1:17:00You don't necessarily have a ton of that because you're not a
- 1:17:03team they straight drops or probably about 50%.
- 1:17:06Of the past plays they have the rest are either off play action
- 1:17:10or off our Po in some way. And I think it probably tens on
- 1:17:13the higher side of that, 50% that are our POS or play
- 1:17:17actions. You're not having a ton of
- 1:17:19straight drops where you're having your tackles have to bend
- 1:17:24kick and make sure that they're not getting.
- 1:17:27As there's Edge rushes for those.
- 1:17:28There's ears pinned back defensive ends so that helps a
- 1:17:31little bit to take some pressure off the offensive line for those
- 1:17:34speed rush has a lot of three Step drops, you're looking at
- 1:17:37slide protection, get ball out of the hands quick when it's not
- 1:17:42some sort of our po or a play action in there.
- 1:17:45It's like I said, earlier, the center's.
- 1:17:47Got to make a lot of these checks, at the line of
- 1:17:49scrimmage. You see the center communicating
- 1:17:51with the rest of the offensive line, you know, whether its
- 1:17:55various checks for, depending on what site type of priest app.
- 1:17:58Look, the defense is giving, and as we talked about a little bit
- 1:18:01earlier, we got uncovered Lima, they've got dual reads on those
- 1:18:04straight drops. So they've got to read Multiple
- 1:18:07linebackers, if they're if they're the uncovered guy.
- 1:18:14Yeah. Things are going slow a defense
- 1:18:16now. Moving the quarterback out of
- 1:18:19the pocket, right? From the start rollout spread
- 1:18:21out. Screens which we've already
- 1:18:26said, you've already said, screams will be limited and then
- 1:18:30that that quickstep our po pop I mean it's going to help protect
- 1:18:36that quarterback. Yeah that's a lot of the rpos.
- 1:18:40They like to do is kind of pressuring the defense inside
- 1:18:43and outside so the run is stressing them inside.
- 1:18:47Where is they've got like on a lot of them with a run to the
- 1:18:50trip side. They've got a slot receiver.
- 1:18:53The inside slot is kind of back pedaling, parallel to the line
- 1:18:57of scrimmage, and you got the two wide guys going up to block.
- 1:19:00So, you know, if you commit another guy to the box to stop
- 1:19:05the run, you're going to be vulnerable out there to the, to
- 1:19:08the RPO. If you're keen on the RPO, you
- 1:19:11got another band. It's not in the box to help with
- 1:19:14the run there. So it kind of widens the area
- 1:19:19that a defense has to cover on a given play, so that That that
- 1:19:23puts a lot of stress on the defense and it makes it so they
- 1:19:26can't just pin their ears back as well.
- 1:19:29So, Yeah, I mean that's that's really it for the offensive line
- 1:19:34in terms of the the pass protection.
- 1:19:38You know, when we looked at the running game, we already talked
- 1:19:41about all the all the pulls and things from the guard of the
- 1:19:44tackle perspective. They're all right, let's get
- 1:19:47going to quarterbacks because Robbie made a good point about
- 1:19:50having a mobile moving, the quarterback around I don't think
- 1:19:55we will ever see as much running as we did with the quarterback
- 1:20:00last year. But how many times?
- 1:20:03I mean, I don't think we're going to have a stationary
- 1:20:04quarterback. Either.
- 1:20:05What is bowing showing I mean, are we running just a handful of
- 1:20:10times? Is it just broken scrambles?
- 1:20:12Is it? What are you seeing from the Run
- 1:20:13game far as the quarterback goes?
- 1:20:16In terms of like kind of designed running runs or runs
- 1:20:20based off? Reads, you're looking about 10,
- 1:20:23maybe 12 carries a game. Game for the quarterback, this
- 1:20:26isn't a position where you have to have the quarterback be
- 1:20:31successful in the Run game for the Run game to be successful.
- 1:20:35The quarterback needs to be athletic, but we don't need an
- 1:20:39elite athleticism. We need the threat, the
- 1:20:43Potential Threat that that quarterback can get some yards
- 1:20:46can get some first downs, maybe occasionally, you know, bust a
- 1:20:5020 plus yarder if the the circumstances are right but
- 1:20:54these More kind of move the pocket type things and give the
- 1:20:56defense something else to think about.
- 1:20:59They're not, they're not wrapping the strength of the
- 1:21:02running game around. What the quarterbacks able to do
- 1:21:04on the ground. I got you.
- 1:21:07So it's more one of those things where I don't want to say it's
- 1:21:12like show, like it's just for show but it's Just when you
- 1:21:17think you've figured out all of our things, he's going to pull
- 1:21:21it, he's going to run for five yards now.
- 1:21:24Robbie what do you got a feeling that you are moving beyond that?
- 1:21:28It's a keep a defense artist. Kind of thing we can do is we
- 1:21:32can hit the running back, he can run it back in the running back
- 1:21:36because the minute we start going after that forget, the
- 1:21:39mesh Point, hit the running back, the quarterbacks can pull
- 1:21:41it out, take around the edge where there's nobody responsible
- 1:21:44for and the RPO adds another element to To that.
- 1:21:47Because a lot of times there's there's two reads.
- 1:21:49If the quarterback tries to keep it, if the quarterback keeps it,
- 1:21:52he's still got potentially the ability to throw out there on
- 1:21:55the RPO on top of the option to keep it in get upfield himself.
- 1:22:01But the big thing for the quarterback, the most important
- 1:22:03thing for them is to be able to quickly diagnose what the
- 1:22:06defense is, giving them at that mesh point and get them in
- 1:22:11situations where they can maximize those defensive
- 1:22:14mismatches. Good deal.
- 1:22:17All right, let's kind of talk about the passing game and now
- 1:22:20what I'm going into specifics of what type of passes and you've
- 1:22:24already said it with the Run game, the guy's got to have some
- 1:22:27athleticism, but are we looking for athleticism with a big
- 1:22:31cannon, or is it soars accuracy more important in Bowens
- 1:22:35offense? Accuracy is absolutely more
- 1:22:38important than a cannon, but you need a quarterback that can
- 1:22:40still make all the throws and stretch the defense when
- 1:22:43necessary, but the most Portent thing again, just like in the
- 1:22:47running game, being able to maximize yardage with, those are
- 1:22:49po reads and get the ball in the hands of where they've got
- 1:22:53mismatches with their athletes in space.
- 1:22:56And a lot of times that leads to missed tackles and big plays.
- 1:23:00So even when it's not a situation where, you know, the
- 1:23:04guys wide open to the guys running completely free, you're
- 1:23:07putting the defense out on the island where a good move the
- 1:23:11here there and all of a sudden a 5-yard gain turns into a 20 or
- 1:23:1430 yard game. Because of One Missed tackle.
- 1:23:19From what you saw is it, what's the is it two to three seconds,
- 1:23:25getting rid of the ball as it more 325?
- 1:23:28It really kind of depends on the play.
- 1:23:31Like I said, the ability to make quick and accurate throws in the
- 1:23:34short passing game is important because that's where a majority
- 1:23:38of the RPO elements are in the offense and they got to be able
- 1:23:42to throw on the run and not just on those Sprint outs or roll.
- 1:23:47Seems like Robbie was talking about, but a lot of times with
- 1:23:50the RPO, once they make that mesh, there's sometimes moving,
- 1:23:54you know, kind of towards where that are PO is designed to go.
- 1:23:57So they've got to be able to throw accurately on the run
- 1:23:59there. And they like I said, they got
- 1:24:01to be able to push the ball down field.
- 1:24:03That's usually going to be off a play-action.
- 1:24:05Usually, when you see those deep shots, those are coming off of
- 1:24:08straight play action, not necessarily rpos.
- 1:24:12And I think the bigger thing is that we need a quarterback
- 1:24:16that's not afraid to Best defense in the middle of the
- 1:24:19field because a lot of the primary routes are going to be
- 1:24:23plays going over the middle of the field, you've got to have to
- 1:24:26be able to make some throws there.
- 1:24:28When there's a little bit of a little bit of traffic, a little
- 1:24:30bit of little bit of mess. You have to be able to make
- 1:24:32those throws. You got to have a special kind
- 1:24:34of guy to go across that and it'll catch that thing.
- 1:24:38All right, well, let's talk about it because something
- 1:24:41that's been kind of mentioned is this is going to be a heavy
- 1:24:44tight end. Obviously, y'all talked about
- 1:24:47Benji, go Cosmo. Some people project him at tight
- 1:24:49end, you've got your main, you've got Daquan right.
- 1:24:53You've got drink to Louis already on the roster, you got
- 1:24:56Eric Gallo on the roster, you get give a longer OST.
- 1:24:59We've already got a crap ton of tight ends.
- 1:25:02You have mentioned, they're not in line enough there a lot
- 1:25:05spread H back position. So what are their
- 1:25:09responsibilities in the Run game?
- 1:25:10If they're not a lot of in line? So, on a lot of the, The Zone
- 1:25:16plays there either. Our kind of double-teaming on
- 1:25:20the end up to the next level or they've got kind of a split Zone
- 1:25:25where they're blocking back against the field against the
- 1:25:29play towards the defensive end on the backside.
- 1:25:32So they'll pull some they will again.
- 1:25:36Go in motion, pre-snap to get, get themselves a line for the
- 1:25:40split Zone. There will my favorite play and
- 1:25:44I'll show some video a little bit later.
- 1:25:47You know, the one of the plays that bow and likes is kind of I.
- 1:25:51So with the tight end in the wing kind of going in B Gap, it
- 1:25:55up to the up to the mic, to get a block on the mic there.
- 1:26:00That's one of my favorite place to watch them, do always always
- 1:26:04a good Collision, usually got some pretty good yards on it.
- 1:26:06So Like watching that, but that's pretty much the primary
- 1:26:13responsibilities for them in the running game.
- 1:26:15Now they if they're outside flexed out, they're usually in
- 1:26:18that to spot to the trip side, unless they're going to buy 2 in
- 1:26:22which case they're you know, they're double Wings usually but
- 1:26:26in those cases there, you know, kind of stalk block and just
- 1:26:29like a normal wide receiver would There's two guys going to
- 1:26:34block everyone pack SG / ISO. Where's the flag?
- 1:26:41Will you try to seek out? Those are used to block 1B can
- 1:26:44do that. All right girl Brian and I both
- 1:26:50know those offensive lineman. There's a flag on holding
- 1:26:53holding. You're probably right.
- 1:26:57Hopping around me home. There's like there's a couple
- 1:26:59times where I debated that fact, if you're not throwing the flag,
- 1:27:03every play. Is it better damn well be
- 1:27:06egregious if I'm holding, whatever, listen, you have to
- 1:27:15hold, is that the rule? Like you just have to hold wife.
- 1:27:17If you're not holding, you're not trying man, you made it to
- 1:27:22the number on the shoulder pads. You went too far still down the
- 1:27:26number on it. Chest.
- 1:27:27You're Golden Keep Holding baby. Alright well use the Titans.
- 1:27:33Well you would say some of the tight ends in the passing game
- 1:27:35will say let's talk about because with bow and being a
- 1:27:39Penn State. He had two studs, I mean, just
- 1:27:43seki and for a move, our studs to seki, I've drafted numerous
- 1:27:48times and fantasy got rid of them numerous times in fantasy,
- 1:27:52but he has helped out and firm has helped out this year.
- 1:27:57What are we seeing in the past game and can gallo and Drake
- 1:28:01especially, you know, jump into that role this year.
- 1:28:06Yeah, I think they can and I'll tell you the big reason why I
- 1:28:08think they can is that a lot of, a lot of what they do is, what
- 1:28:13those two guys were both doing. When James Mitchell was still on
- 1:28:17the field, okay? So there's going to be a lot of
- 1:28:22opportunities for them to work from the wing.
- 1:28:27Split out a little bit and run, you know, some hitches, some
- 1:28:31seams but primarily what they're running is the seam, they're
- 1:28:38running some, some quick outs and then they're either, you
- 1:28:43know, the drags and shallow crosses, that's really the bread
- 1:28:46and butter and you see that a lot especially when we're all
- 1:28:51what would I was watching? Friar Muth, I mean, he does such
- 1:28:53a good job after the catch. And I think that, you know, a
- 1:28:58guy, like, Gallo could potentially turn into something
- 1:29:00like that, where he gets some, some quality yards after the
- 1:29:03catch is because he's got a little bit of that bigger body
- 1:29:06that can absorb some of those hits kind of after the catch.
- 1:29:09So it sounds like he goes simplistic right simplistic, I'm
- 1:29:14not going to try to overthink and do a ton with my tight ends
- 1:29:16in the passing game. I'm using it very basic, but
- 1:29:19what we're doing at the Run game and other things If these guys
- 1:29:24can get the ball in their hands, there's going to be space there.
- 1:29:27And is it does he like factor? Is it mismatches?
- 1:29:31Is he getting good matchups because of the alignments so
- 1:29:34it's mismatches. But sometimes it's just, you
- 1:29:39know, those underneath routes. There's a little bit more space
- 1:29:42sometimes to work from the line of scrimmage there and that
- 1:29:46gives them a little bit of an opportunity to get some run
- 1:29:49after the catch. So fryer.
- 1:29:51Muth like I said in particular, I saw a bunch of opportunities
- 1:29:54where he caught the ball at about 45 yards, and turned it
- 1:29:58into a 15 or 20 yard gain just because of One Missed tackle.
- 1:30:03And he had that athleticism to kind of accelerate not quite
- 1:30:07wide receiver speed, but good enough to run away from some of
- 1:30:09those interior guys. Run away from the bigger guys
- 1:30:14and over the smaller guys, there we go.
- 1:30:18All right, didn't know. I'm going to just keep going
- 1:30:21down and we'll eventually get to the tape.
- 1:30:23So let's talk about the wide receivers because from what
- 1:30:26you're telling us here, tight ends on the field, a lot.
- 1:30:30Did I tell you injure on the field a lot there's almost
- 1:30:33always at least one tight in on the field and then 30% but they
- 1:30:37have to be able to line up at the wing in line opposite trips
- 1:30:42and then when they go trips with the tight end to the trip side,
- 1:30:47he's usually the number two guy. But then you're also telling us
- 1:30:51that about 30, you saw it about every third plague, you're going
- 1:30:55to get two tight ends. So obviously, you know, if you
- 1:30:59have a A 10-play drive, you're looking at probably two tight
- 1:31:02ends for X versus having, you know, three wives, you know,
- 1:31:07more, you know, more or less. But what are the tight ends
- 1:31:10doing? Let's talk about.
- 1:31:11Let's talk about them in the pass game.
- 1:31:13First. What?
- 1:31:14What's kind of their route tree? Do we have a full route tree or
- 1:31:18is it like it used to be done with the wide receivers of the
- 1:31:22tight ends wide receivers? So the way they kind of
- 1:31:27structure their wide receivers is a little bit similar to what
- 1:31:31Robbie was talking about earlier.
- 1:31:33A lot of the exterior guys are more, got one side that usually
- 1:31:39more of a stick, mover one guy that's a little bit more of a
- 1:31:41burner, they usually put that guy on the same side, with the
- 1:31:44slot receiver and the slot receivers.
- 1:31:47The guy that really runs the full complement of the route
- 1:31:50tree and can take advantage of a lot of mismatches in the middle
- 1:31:54of the Field also has a lot more room to work, just because you
- 1:31:58could run a lot of stuff out, that's got space to run those
- 1:32:01outs, you got space to run those corners, but you can also run
- 1:32:06the post. You can run the dig the real
- 1:32:09full route tree is available to the slot receiver, and that's
- 1:32:11the guy that's usually the primary target on most of these
- 1:32:13pass plays. All right, as your primary
- 1:32:16target. So Reality is you're going to
- 1:32:21have a speech on the outside, Jane pay you right?
- 1:32:26Yep. Who's our, why this year?
- 1:32:32You know, there's a Jaden blue, do you think I think Jaden blue
- 1:32:36is going to be your ex he's going to be the primary stick
- 1:32:40mover I think your Z is going to be pay, you he's going to be a
- 1:32:45burner and I think you're going to put Lofton at the slot and
- 1:32:47let him do a little bit everything.
- 1:32:50All right, but full complement route, Tree in just more
- 1:32:55specifics, right? So essentially Robbie what does
- 1:33:00that do when you have somebody Like Jaden pay you tues, a 44
- 1:33:03guy who can just run by the defense, what does that do to
- 1:33:07the rest of the feet? As you shake your head and
- 1:33:11you've got to, you got to have that corner.
- 1:33:14That's, that's got a mindset. Now, he's either got a mindset.
- 1:33:20I can run with him every step and I don't care.
- 1:33:22I can cover him down field or I noticed cats faster and I am,
- 1:33:26and I've got to be as physical as possible and knock his timing
- 1:33:29off as quickly as I can. Now you see it everyday, you see
- 1:33:34it all the time, then FL you get teams that take these big,
- 1:33:39physical wide receivers, like became a camp and say, okay,
- 1:33:43bring you a little 510 corner and see if he can do anything
- 1:33:46with it. And some of them take Tyreke
- 1:33:48Hill they go keep up with him. If you can.
- 1:33:53I mean it's a pick your poison you want to do with the safeties
- 1:33:57though. Because in that case, I mean I
- 1:34:00know you have confidence in your players but they're sometimes
- 1:34:05you know, I know you think you're fast but I gotta give you
- 1:34:08some help. What does that start doing to
- 1:34:11the Alana? Because from what I'm hearing
- 1:34:14Braun is, you can have the stick mover on the outside and you've
- 1:34:17got a guy going down field the slot guys going to do everything
- 1:34:20so it sounds like it's a 10. Essentially what Tyler bones
- 1:34:24trying to do is he's trying to manipulate the middle of the
- 1:34:27field to get his tight ends open and to let that slot kind of run
- 1:34:32havoc and dude whatever the slot gets to cook the tight end kind
- 1:34:35of gets to work when that where those holes are and then the
- 1:34:38outside guys are kind of your Outlets to move the sticks if
- 1:34:41nothing else. Is there, you're creating this
- 1:34:45matches? Not man to man but space areas
- 1:34:50you're putting guys on the vine because you got that burner down
- 1:34:53the side is taking that corner or if you're playing the cover
- 1:34:56to the corners going to sit and take away something underneath.
- 1:35:02Okay, then you got that safety plane really deep stretch in
- 1:35:05that field. Now all of a sudden you got the
- 1:35:07tight end and the slot, you know, two tight ends run into
- 1:35:10drag and it's lots of running this, you know, dig over the
- 1:35:15top, well at linebacker. Now he's got to decide why come
- 1:35:19down to the, to the drag, or do I stay back on the, on the edge
- 1:35:23because I do the safety had to help on top.
- 1:35:26Will you put that linebacker on the back?
- 1:35:28He's not greater coverage anyway so he's not going to make the
- 1:35:30best decision. A lot of times.
- 1:35:34I mean, we talked about, we talked about here, one of her
- 1:35:39best plays, we bring her outside receiver and replace the nearest
- 1:35:45linebacker, okay, we call it a stick.
- 1:35:49We take our slot and run him in a corner and then we take our
- 1:35:54back in the same side. Run a bubble.
- 1:35:57Okay, so you got to stick, you've got a guy coming in
- 1:36:00almost like an RPO running in replacing the linebacker and
- 1:36:03you've got the running back running out.
- 1:36:05Well, his coverage part is in that flat area.
- 1:36:09So if he goes out to the running back, you got a free guy from
- 1:36:13the outside coming in right there to the hash taking the
- 1:36:16ball from you. If you stay right there, we'll
- 1:36:18throw the bubble because the corner dropped with the with the
- 1:36:21corner route. Wanted it back, so he's got 12
- 1:36:26yards before he Buddies. We'll get to it.
- 1:36:28Give report cover two and the safety comes down to it.
- 1:36:31How many Corner comes down to it?
- 1:36:33The safeties got to go all the way to the corner of the field
- 1:36:36to catch that ball. Running the corner from him
- 1:36:38slot, man. It's the hardest thing in the
- 1:36:41world we haven't, we've stopped at practice yet.
- 1:36:45I've been doing this. What I'm hearing from both of
- 1:36:51y'all is the way Bowens offense is set up, is it's not
- 1:36:55misdirection anything like that. It's essentially Spacing game.
- 1:36:58Yes, it jumped essentially, it's almost chest in a way to say
- 1:37:03this is what I'm doing my pieces.
- 1:37:05You have to pick your poison, I'm going to get somebody open.
- 1:37:10It might be short but you have to tackle them and their God has
- 1:37:13to choose the right spot. It may be short.
- 1:37:16And where's the next guy? That's gonna tackle the exactly
- 1:37:19yards after the carry, all right, and the wide receivers
- 1:37:23are big in the in the running game to, I mean, especially the
- 1:37:27The outside guys, because they are going to have primary
- 1:37:30responsibilities on a lot of these are POS where they're the
- 1:37:33primary blocker to kind of spring that are PO for more than
- 1:37:36just a, you know, two or three yard gain.
- 1:37:40All right, that's going to be big for them.
- 1:37:42They also have some responsibilities on, on some of
- 1:37:45the Walling, some backers on some of the run plays and
- 1:37:50obviously some runoff and decoy looks on run place.
- 1:37:53And but primarily it's going to be that stop blocking type
- 1:37:58technique goes man when things get so heavy that is rpos, you
- 1:38:03get linebackers who are normally coming from their gift and
- 1:38:07colliding, those receivers as they come across.
- 1:38:10Off now and they're slowing down because they made that ball may
- 1:38:15be thrown really quick. And they have to try to break
- 1:38:19down and tackle a more athletic individual.
- 1:38:22Hmm. Now all the sudden they're
- 1:38:24slowing down. This guys coming in.
- 1:38:26He's going up, it comes in our po but he's not rpoe.
- 1:38:30The balls going to break out to the side now, he's got an easy
- 1:38:33block because I got running full speed through it.
- 1:38:36All he's got to do is get in his way.
- 1:38:37He doesn't have to kill him, he's just got to make him go
- 1:38:40around. Yep, it's slows that flow down
- 1:38:45and gives it. It's a lot harder to move.
- 1:38:48Sideways changing direction and then go tackle with a running
- 1:38:53back to running full speed already dip and some of the and
- 1:38:56some of these, some of these route combinations are designed
- 1:39:00for like those pics and rubs. And some of them are just as we
- 1:39:03talked about some of that spacing where you trying to get.
- 1:39:06Guys, where there's you got to pick your poison because you're
- 1:39:10on an island and you got two guys coming into your area.
- 1:39:15All right. But let's wrap up the last
- 1:39:17position group run. Yep.
- 1:39:19Um, now I'm going to ask you this before you jump into it.
- 1:39:26Who do you think is the starting running back game?
- 1:39:30One. If I had to put my money on
- 1:39:33somebody, I think it'd be Kenzie, Christian.
- 1:39:37Not Malachi. Not the guy that had a good
- 1:39:39season. I think Malik I will be heavily
- 1:39:42featured looking at Bo and he was using three running backs
- 1:39:47with a ton of carries. So three guys are going to get
- 1:39:52significant totes just in the bowl game.
- 1:39:57We saw I think it was Ricky Slade had some carries along
- 1:40:02with no akane and journey Brown. So you had three guys that were
- 1:40:08probably around close to 10 or 10 or more carries in that game.
- 1:40:14So so there's going to be plenty of opportunities for a handful
- 1:40:19of guys to eat and you don't necessarily need to lean on a
- 1:40:22primary back in this type on offense, might as well give
- 1:40:26everybody. So exactly, yeah.
- 1:40:29So if we can find a Jonathan Taylor absolutely give him 20
- 1:40:35carries a game but short of that especially with what we do.
- 1:40:40We're rolling with more or less on this roster going into 22.
- 1:40:46I'm sorry 22. There's going to be
- 1:40:49opportunities for about two or three guys to get eight to ten,
- 1:40:52carries a game. All right, it's good to know
- 1:40:55that, but it's also what you talk about Jonathan Taylor
- 1:40:57because at Fordham. Yeah, Chase Edmunds.
- 1:41:01He found that kids somewhere and had him play at Fordham and get
- 1:41:04that kid to be drafted in the fourth round and he was still
- 1:41:08giving splitting carries even with Chase.
- 1:41:11There, there was another running, there was another
- 1:41:14Running back. That's still probably had eight
- 1:41:16to ten carries a game. When you had a Chase Edmunds on
- 1:41:18your Field playing at an FCS level, which is so there's still
- 1:41:22some opportunities out there for carries even when you do have
- 1:41:26that kind of elite player on your roster.
- 1:41:29So there's going to be two to three guys that are going to get
- 1:41:31some significant opportunities here.
- 1:41:33So I don't think Malachi Compass not being one.
- 1:41:36A is necessarily a slight to him.
- 1:41:38I just think Kenji, Christian, skillset probably matches what
- 1:41:42we're trying to do on offense a little bit more.
- 1:41:44More than Malachi, obviously, with the caveat being that
- 1:41:48Kenji. Christian picks up the elements
- 1:41:50of the offense in time for fall. I tell you if I the thought of
- 1:41:56hearing you say that they could be two or three guys, getting 10
- 1:42:01carries a piece. And the quarterback could
- 1:42:04possibly get eight carries. I mean I'm not I'm not a math.
- 1:42:08Magician three players getting 10 on the quarterback getting a
- 1:42:11that's 38 balls. Run the game.
- 1:42:15I'll take that this. You likes it, he likes it.
- 1:42:21Yeah and I mean the reason I say this about Kenji I mean I think
- 1:42:24I'm running back that's going to have success in the system.
- 1:42:27They got to have versatility, they got to have good patients.
- 1:42:31They got to have a good best response.
- 1:42:33Relationship with the quarterback.
- 1:42:34Obviously, Malachi probably has the advantage there just because
- 1:42:38he's had more on the field. I know we don't, I'm not
- 1:42:42returning every quarterback. He's taking Snaps with this
- 1:42:46season, but we are returning a quarterback.
- 1:42:48He's taken steps with this season.
- 1:42:50So, you know, I think he probably has a little bit of a
- 1:42:53leg up there. When we talk about Zone plays,
- 1:42:57we talk about bang, Bend or bounce.
- 1:43:02So bang you're going right at the aiming point, right?
- 1:43:05Bend your bidding it baguettes that cutback lane bounce.
- 1:43:08You're bouncing it outside. I think Kenji cut probably has
- 1:43:11the best ability to do those three things.
- 1:43:13Well, okay, where is Malik, I think is more of a, more of a
- 1:43:17bang and maybe a little bit of a bin, but I don't know if he's
- 1:43:20quite got the bounce. And you know, you must have
- 1:43:24acceleration to get through those holes when they open up.
- 1:43:27And I think Kenji probably has the best combination of that as
- 1:43:30well. All right, hanging Pam of going
- 1:43:32to, you got skin pretty well too.
- 1:43:34Yep. All right.
- 1:43:36How much passing is it? I mean, I felt like the old
- 1:43:40regime. It was non-existent.
- 1:43:42I felt like Laughlin before that non-existent and even Frank's
- 1:43:47years, it was not, you know, way up there is it, we're going to
- 1:43:52see it more. More or less, you have to catch
- 1:43:54the ball if you want to play running back in those, okay?
- 1:43:58And it's not just screens, they're using the running back a
- 1:44:01lot split out into when they when they go empty, the running
- 1:44:04back. Staying on the field.
- 1:44:05He's going out into the, to the slot to the, to the single trip.
- 1:44:10The single side opposite, the trips, he is catching balls on
- 1:44:16kind of swings, out of the backfield, they're putting him
- 1:44:18in motion, catching some swing passes.
- 1:44:22Got to be able to get some extra yards off those two because
- 1:44:25there's usually going to be one, one guy, you're going to have to
- 1:44:27make missing that that open field.
- 1:44:29So got to be able to catch. You got to be able to make guys
- 1:44:32miss in the open field. It sounds to me, like it's gonna
- 1:44:35be a lot closer to what we're seeing more in the pros.
- 1:44:39Now, rather than The what most people look at is is spread
- 1:44:45College. Running back quarterback.
- 1:44:49Go. You know the kind of old-school
- 1:44:51Lamar Jackson kind of stuff. Yeah, they hit like I said, it's
- 1:44:55Smash Mouth RPO but they still use the running back outside of
- 1:44:58the, the The Tackle Box there to catch the ball and like I said,
- 1:45:03it's not almost exclusively dot on necessarily traditional
- 1:45:07screens. It's more of those quick swings
- 1:45:11or like I said, splitting the the back out, pre-snap and
- 1:45:15letting him run a slant or a Pitch or something like that to
- 1:45:18get into the ball quick and let him make some guys miss.
- 1:45:21Yep. Also, all from to him and you'll
- 1:45:26have both got me completely jacked about this season.
- 1:45:29We're going 12-0. Now we got some place to run
- 1:45:35through. I'm going to I'm going to talk
- 1:45:36through some of the plays to expect.
- 1:45:37Man, you got it. Yeah, get hype about this and
- 1:45:39about the defense but we got to make sure that the right ones
- 1:45:44are there. I feel real good about one.
- 1:45:48Mike linebacker. And I feel like they're going to
- 1:45:51do a great job in putting the right guys, in the right places.
- 1:45:55Well, that's me. Let's take a look at the video
- 1:45:59in progress. Yeah, let's go talk through some
- 1:46:01plays first and as we get to ones I've got video on I'll pull
- 1:46:04that up. So like I'm gonna I'm gonna run
- 1:46:08through plays in terms of usage and kind of them being the bread
- 1:46:12and butter of the offense and then we'll kind of look it look
- 1:46:15at some videos as we go through. Things that I think most of the
- 1:46:18audience is familiar with. I didn't pull video for.
- 1:46:21So, for example, I'm starting here with inside Zone Zone, read
- 1:46:26and Zone rp0. I don't really need to show you
- 1:46:29a ton about that. You guys kind of seen variations
- 1:46:32of that, that we've ran the last couple of years with with core
- 1:46:38Nelson. There's a little bit of a
- 1:46:41different action in terms of how they get the ball out to the
- 1:46:45receivers. But the Basic concepts are the
- 1:46:48same. The reeds are the same, same
- 1:46:52with the, the wide Zone read and RPO.
- 1:46:56That's kind of the, the outside Zone, look there.
- 1:47:00So, same type of deal, they run a dive RPO.
- 1:47:06But the first one I'm going to show a video on is the the split
- 1:47:09Zone read and then the RPO that they run off of that.
- 1:47:14So let me get that cute up here for us.
- 1:47:19And again, for those listening, on the podcast, head over to
- 1:47:22YouTube to see these videos. We do have a YouTube account
- 1:47:28banned recorder podcast, subscribe.
- 1:47:33This is some organ tape here. Yep.
- 1:47:36So this is Oregon. So just a disclaimer of what I
- 1:47:39did here with the tape. Since we don't have a ton of
- 1:47:43video of Bowen calling plays at the power 5 level outside of one
- 1:47:50game. What I've done here is looked at
- 1:47:53all the games where he has called plays and
- 1:47:55cross-reference. Those with Joe Moorhead tape
- 1:47:57that's been cut up significantly on the web and it's available
- 1:48:01here. So first Here is with Oregon.
- 1:48:06It's the split Zone. It's going to show you actually
- 1:48:09three different variations here. So, let's take a look.
- 1:48:21So this you got a little bit, you got the tight in Split out
- 1:48:24wide flexed, initially comes into the wing, comes across the
- 1:48:31formation and this is actually the RPO set up here.
- 1:48:35So notice that he didn't actually block anyone know.
- 1:48:38He went right through the guy. Yeah.
- 1:48:40So what normally would happen here is that the tight ends
- 1:48:44going to kick that back side defensive end.
- 1:48:49But they run an RPO off of this where they kind of leak the
- 1:48:53tight end into the flat. So it kind of gives the, the
- 1:48:57outside linebacker puts him on an island.
- 1:48:59If the quarterback decides to keep it here, in this case, it's
- 1:49:02a give but let's watch it here. But if you got, if the
- 1:49:08quarterback it kept here, you see, you got the quarterback
- 1:49:11coming out with the ball. Quarterback will be coming out
- 1:49:15with a ball. You got the Titan out there, so
- 1:49:17you got a little bit of a dual read for, whoever the odd, man
- 1:49:21is here. But again, in this case, they
- 1:49:23gave it to the running back. It's about a nice nice touch
- 1:49:28down. There the blizzard coming in
- 1:49:30that probably made him. Read you again.
- 1:49:33Yep. Here's another.
- 1:49:36Look at it here. Look at that.
- 1:49:41Look at the look at the difference in the splits with
- 1:49:43the linebackers. Are he brings them in right
- 1:49:46here? Takes Two Steps.
- 1:49:55Yeah, he saw two guys blitzing on that side.
- 1:49:58He knew that he had numbers with the running.
- 1:50:00Back in the middle there, they had numbers locking in the
- 1:50:03middle. So Good job giving their all
- 1:50:06right. And that's just, that's one of
- 1:50:07the base run inside zones, right?
- 1:50:10He called it split Zone, but it's a splits inside Zone.
- 1:50:13Just the concept is split because you got the tight end.
- 1:50:16Moving back side. It would it's RPO he's leaking
- 1:50:20if it's just straight split Zone.
- 1:50:22He'd be kicking out the back side, D in.
- 1:50:26All right. So - if they have been more true
- 1:50:31zone is that it is split, it have been reading the other side
- 1:50:34and Yep. Went back to going one way and
- 1:50:37your quarterback will be going opposite.
- 1:50:39Exactly. Yep.
- 1:50:43Same side is a lot harder on Abby's.
- 1:50:45It's alright. So again the the next one I've
- 1:50:55already talked about a little bit.
- 1:50:56Is the eye, so the eye so RP. Oh, that's tight in going.
- 1:51:02In that be Gap. Hey knocking the piss.
- 1:51:04Out of that Mike linebacker. Let's see it.
- 1:51:09I don't have a video of that one.
- 1:51:12I was just talking about that as one of the one of the key
- 1:51:14players here and it's amazing. No, they do not.
- 1:51:29All right, so the next one we're gonna have fun with this one so
- 1:51:31it's the duo. It's A lot of times called Power
- 1:51:36without a pull so it's essentially power scheme.
- 1:51:39You just don't have the pulling guard rapping there, so let me
- 1:51:44pull that one up and we will take a look at that.
- 1:51:53Power without a pool. Just sounds like it shouldn't
- 1:51:56work. But you know what?
- 1:51:59It does. All right, if you're doing the
- 1:52:11effort it's play it's just a slow motion.
- 1:52:14Okay, we can't see it. Hang on, let's say are we good?
- 1:52:20Let's run it back. Temple.
- 1:52:32The Lord is white, everybody clear.
- 1:52:35So it's a lot of downs, the tight ends kicking and then
- 1:52:39you're essentially asking the running back.
- 1:52:41In this case to make that one backer, missing the whole you
- 1:52:45got it. You had a good.
- 1:52:47Well maybe the opportunity this situation Temple.
- 1:52:50Takes herself out of it. Comes the Blitz and Backer.
- 1:52:53Here goes off opposite side anyway.
- 1:52:56Oh yeah. Nobody ever touches it.
- 1:52:58Yeah, the stroke is strong. Safety is the only player that
- 1:53:00can make a player. 44 runs itself into the wash.
- 1:53:05Yep, let's see what you're talking about.
- 1:53:09It's a power because everybody's going One Direction and
- 1:53:14flattening out right here. So normally on a power, its Down
- 1:53:18and then wrap. And in this case, there's no
- 1:53:22rap, they're just down. And then the tight end is
- 1:53:24Walling, the place idea in normally that Gaara, cackle
- 1:53:29somebody's coming up on the back of it.
- 1:53:31But you said itself into there and it'll wash right there,
- 1:53:34should be there. Should have been like a TT, I
- 1:53:35like a down double team somewhere in the middle there
- 1:53:38and the backer just took himself out of it.
- 1:53:44And it just seems like a very basic play right there.
- 1:53:47Just very simplistic, nothing fancy.
- 1:53:49Not a lot of eye candy just go out there.
- 1:53:55Block turn the guys in the room and it's definitely more old
- 1:53:59school. Was that old school spent a
- 1:54:00little more. Smashmouth I play.
- 1:54:03You know, will also see things that work familiar with.
- 1:54:05You'll see a counter counter sweet.
- 1:54:07They'll run that with the running back and the
- 1:54:09quarterback, they'll run. That kind of pin pull that kind
- 1:54:13of bucks, sweep or quarterback sweep as well.
- 1:54:17And I have to plug in. Yeah, you're good completely.
- 1:54:23We also have the return of the the power read or the inverted v
- 1:54:27r. But there is variances that we
- 1:54:29will run out of this and there is some RPO elements that that
- 1:54:33are added into that. But the next video I'm going to
- 1:54:36show you is the power Dart or po, so let me get that pulled up
- 1:54:40for you. This is the one you talked
- 1:54:45about. Did you said look at this?
- 1:54:48Because some Brian mentioned to me, just lure earlier was we
- 1:54:53don't have a ton of run plays but the way they counter it is
- 1:54:59multiple formations and multiple ways to block those run plays
- 1:55:02correct. Well yeah, that and also pretty
- 1:55:05much every Run. Play can have an RPO element to
- 1:55:08it. It's not always called that way.
- 1:55:11So, you're, you're essentially any time you have a running
- 1:55:15play, you're going to at least, be able to run it for different
- 1:55:18ways, out of the same formation, you know, left, right, straight
- 1:55:24left, right RPO and then you're going to have different
- 1:55:27formations that, some of these plays will work equally well,
- 1:55:30out of. So you get a lot of different
- 1:55:32looks even though you technically only have, you know,
- 1:55:36a handful of Concepts, right? So you got you got about eight
- 1:55:39or ten run Concepts but Those are deployed to a lot of
- 1:55:42different ways. This is called powered Bart.
- 1:55:47Yep, our dark. And then there's our po off of
- 1:55:49that, all right. So we got a tackle pull.
- 1:55:58Reading the outside linebacker. In this case, they gave it got a
- 1:56:03pretty good game there. See it from a different angle
- 1:56:06here. This is closer, there's a little
- 1:56:17different different action with the running back here, but the
- 1:56:20same same play design. Well, it's also where they're
- 1:56:24doing it. They just did.
- 1:56:25That would like to 40 and then the next one, it's inside the
- 1:56:28goal line. Yep.
- 1:56:30Kind of showing the variation where it can be done at any
- 1:56:33point on the field and this is now Midfield.
- 1:56:36Yeah, and here's where we're going to get a throw out of this
- 1:56:39because you got The linebacker kind of sneaks inside.
- 1:56:44It catches a peek and now you got a big wide open Lane to
- 1:56:47throw it. To the wide receiver will slot
- 1:56:49scene. Yep.
- 1:56:55He took three steps of a skinny post little skinny post their.
- 1:56:59Yeah, one thing, you'll notice there defensively all three
- 1:57:05plays, same play with different alignment, by the running back
- 1:57:09and a different way. They took the steps to do it.
- 1:57:12I'll put different players in the barn.
- 1:57:16The people man right there. I want to cross for the theme,
- 1:57:19so it pulled that guy down. In case, the quarterback came
- 1:57:22up, quarterback came up to run that guy had to come down and
- 1:57:25take the quarterback, so then he could drop it easily over the
- 1:57:27top. The same thing on the very first
- 1:57:31play was they had that running back cross the quarterback.
- 1:57:34So you always any kind of run it back crosses.
- 1:57:36The quarterback is a defense. I had to have somebody there for
- 1:57:39the quarterback. In case he pulls it takes off
- 1:57:43well, the one there when he stepped through the quarterback,
- 1:57:45got the ball and went up. We're not worried about the
- 1:57:47quarterback at that point. We got to attack the running
- 1:57:50back inside. They'll be right back in so it's
- 1:57:55putting different people in The Binding.
- 1:57:57It's Some tough stuff. Yeah, you know, you shut your
- 1:58:01show and essentially if it's the same play but you're showing a
- 1:58:04little different window dressing that's causing some of those
- 1:58:07backers to flow. Yeah, different differently from
- 1:58:10the start of the snap. And then all of a sudden we got
- 1:58:12a lot of the same formation but guess where the back to?
- 1:58:17Yep, exactly. So I mean, some other plays that
- 1:58:21are, you know, Staples of the offense freeze option when they
- 1:58:26run that, it's they usually run it.
- 1:58:28Pistol. But it the initial look of it
- 1:58:31looks like pistol inside Zone. And so you get a little bit of a
- 1:58:38hesitation from those linebackers flowing Outside, The
- 1:58:43Tackle Box. So once they once they start
- 1:58:45that that that option, that freeze option where they're
- 1:58:50getting wider, The Tackle Box. It really, it really gives the
- 1:58:54opportunity for the quarterback to make a good read, and it
- 1:58:57gives a lot more opportunity for the quarterback to potentially
- 1:58:59keep their. If, if those linebackers have it
- 1:59:03flowed back over the top of the of the be in there.
- 1:59:06So that was effective on a handful of plays.
- 1:59:09I saw the next one is one, I really like, because it's
- 1:59:13something that we actually ran it hand in Sydney, a lot, but
- 1:59:16they've added some RPO elements to it.
- 1:59:19It's the the shovel RPO. So let me get that cute up here
- 1:59:23for us. We run that similar to that
- 1:59:34option here and you run it limited times.
- 1:59:38It's very effective. Here we go.
- 1:59:58This is the trip. She talked about trips in line
- 2:00:00tight in. Yep, so yeah, let's run that
- 2:00:03back and take a look at that. So you got in line tight in at
- 2:00:05the bottom trips to the top. Running back offset to the tight
- 2:00:10inside. And You know, again it here it's
- 2:00:16going to be optioning, they're really putting that DNA on the
- 2:00:20island. Putting the DNA on an island
- 2:00:24also given, but look at the ARP the RPO element, watch the
- 2:00:28inside on the trips. It out.
- 2:00:37Yep. So if so if you run it back
- 2:00:40here, if that if the DN doesn't come up feel doesn't fly it
- 2:00:44field. He just kind of sits you're
- 2:00:47going to throw it out there to that that slot receiver and he
- 2:00:49got he's got some room and space to make some something happen
- 2:00:52there as well. So that it's almost like the
- 2:00:56what is it? The like the West Coast was the
- 2:01:00hard bootleg with the tight end Crossing Y'all know what I'm
- 2:01:07talking math for? I was watching a video.
- 2:01:10What do you say? We run it back?
- 2:01:11Well saying, is you ever seen West Coast offense is like the
- 2:01:14Shanahan offense when he runs that stretch but it's a rollout
- 2:01:18for the tight ends Crossing. Yeah, it's kind of similar to
- 2:01:21that concept. Of.
- 2:01:23If you bite down, it's going to be a very easy pass the
- 2:01:27defensive end bit down in that suitcase.
- 2:01:29So as soon as he bit down, It's an easy decision for the
- 2:01:34quarterback. Flip it, right.
- 2:01:35Inside if we see the way it was blocked on the inside, they are
- 2:01:39turning those guys out. It was like, let the fruit.
- 2:01:41Let the defensive end rush you made the point hook made the
- 2:01:45point. If he stays clear.
- 2:01:48It's going to be tough to make that show.
- 2:01:49He's gonna be right there to make the play, but you're going
- 2:01:51to have a guy going out to the flats and it's only two guys up
- 2:01:55top tip. So it's a three-on-two concept
- 2:01:58where if he makes the catch and eat turns, somebody's got to get
- 2:02:03off blocks or somebody's got to come from the opposite side of
- 2:02:06the field to make the play. Well, Robbie, I know can speak
- 2:02:09to this. The one downside of the shovel
- 2:02:11is that if the defensive end doesn't fly field, you pretty
- 2:02:16much have to toss it in the day. Yeah, with this.
- 2:02:20You don't have that. You have another option.
- 2:02:23Right. We want the absolutely.
- 2:02:26We run something very similar to this.
- 2:02:28But instead of it back, leading up with a shovel like that, we
- 2:02:33take our SWAT and he goes up to 7 and out and they're running
- 2:02:39back. We faked it there.
- 2:02:42If it back comes down to the running back, we throw it out
- 2:02:45there. Now, if he widens, then we drop
- 2:02:48it to the running back on a like a quick out.
- 2:02:51Okay. Okay.
- 2:02:52What about? Flips it out there.
- 2:02:55So I made the quarter back in the running back or three yards
- 2:02:58apart but he did he drops right to him.
- 2:03:02They mirror each other down the field being aware that Ian takes
- 2:03:05it. We tried to shovel early in the
- 2:03:10year, a little middle screen we had to golf because there, we've
- 2:03:17got Goodreads because we're playing with guy's gonna 330
- 2:03:22pounds. It defensive line there, they
- 2:03:26didn't know not to rush, they're just too slow doing it.
- 2:03:31Big bears, call it a gift. There's always risk with that
- 2:03:36one inside. So that's kind of the last of
- 2:03:39the rpos. That will look at we're going to
- 2:03:42look at some some route combinations and Concepts.
- 2:03:45Now, the shovel FL was a good kind of segue because it's
- 2:03:51technically a pass. But it's also, but it's pretty
- 2:03:54much a run play fighting like this jet.
- 2:03:56My all, that is shovel. Yeah, yeah, we hand.
- 2:04:00But now if you had it to him and he gets, you know, he Ops the
- 2:04:05ball to Fumble but as long as you just kind of toss it in
- 2:04:07front of him and he catches it, if he doesn't catch anything.
- 2:04:10Ramsey complete, exactly, exactly.
- 2:04:14So, I mean, the first cock combination we're looking at if
- 2:04:17they run spacing. So you got, you know, the curls
- 2:04:20and hitches spread throughout the the feel their create
- 2:04:25spacing for quarterback to make a read, get the ball to the open
- 2:04:29man make and let them get up. Feel they're good, stick moving
- 2:04:32combination. Good way to kind of get guys.
- 2:04:34Guys, make some tough choices for the, the inside of the
- 2:04:41defense there. But the first video that I'm
- 2:04:43going to show is the, the Portland concept.
- 2:04:46This is one of my favorites that I was looking at when I was
- 2:04:49reviewing. So let me get that one.
- 2:04:51Cute up for us here. Fixing to run a lot more
- 2:04:56Concepts mirrored or do they have a lot of rats?
- 2:05:01Do you think they're running off of Route 3?
- 2:05:04They're running out of Route tree and it'll be pretty evident
- 2:05:07on on this one here. So let me get it cued up here.
- 2:05:18All right, so this is that that true trips look so it's not the
- 2:05:23trips with the tight end in line.
- 2:05:26But we'll look at this from top to bottom and you'll kind of see
- 2:05:30what I'm what I'm talking about here.
- 2:05:32So I'll play it a little bit and then kind of pause it as I'm
- 2:05:35going. All right, so from from top to
- 2:05:44bottom, we have a hitch. We've got a shallow cross.
- 2:05:55We've got the tight end in this case.
- 2:05:59That was the third guy on the trip side, these will be running
- 2:06:03a corner. You got your wide receiver down
- 2:06:06at the bottom, running a post and then you got the running
- 2:06:10back. Running a wheel.
- 2:06:13Host wheel. Most deadly pattern in football,
- 2:06:20and that's a touchdown. Yeah, because nobody covers the
- 2:06:24wheel. It also helps when you have SE
- 2:06:28Kwang Berkeley as your running back.
- 2:06:30Yeah, well, the concept of because that's a few in the
- 2:06:35middle of fuel, he can't leave. He can't leave early because if
- 2:06:39he leaves early, it's an easier throw right.
- 2:06:43Yep. Capone.
- 2:06:44And if that end of the post, or the wheel aren't open, look at
- 2:06:47the middle of the field who you got running pretty much wide
- 2:06:50open for a solid dish and yard game.
- 2:06:55It's a pit. But in this case, you can see
- 2:06:58That's actually one of the better we'll coverages.
- 2:07:00I've seen he still gets beat still gets people still gets be
- 2:07:05good tag and helps when you have say Quan Berkeley.
- 2:07:08Yeah that post is so important there though because that the
- 2:07:14safety has just stay there you can't.
- 2:07:15This is one where Wisconsin defended pretty well.
- 2:07:18Yeah, it was still a touchdown. It was still a touchdown in the
- 2:07:22other big piece on this is even if they had taken away.
- 2:07:27Wheel. If he had wrote him out of
- 2:07:29bounds is that shallow cross Jack 12?
- 2:07:33Not there dump. There's no one on that side of
- 2:07:36the field, he probably gets to the 5, yard line was one of
- 2:07:40them, one of them, out of bounds, with the running, back
- 2:07:44in the other ones, running down the field with the with the post
- 2:07:48in safety at Levi. Yeah.
- 2:07:52It's still the safety. The safety still stand.
- 2:07:55In the middle of the field of take away the post.
- 2:07:57So the safety is the only one that probably can make the play
- 2:08:00and he's don't come from the middle of the field.
- 2:08:02All the way. What does that?
- 2:08:03Is that boundary side or field side as field side one?
- 2:08:09Let's see. Ball was on was almost on the
- 2:08:15right hash, okay so boundary side?
- 2:08:18Yep. So the safeties have to come all
- 2:08:20the way to the boundary side from the middle of the field.
- 2:08:24What other what other passing Concepts you got here man.
- 2:08:26Is we get into our to? Yeah so let me go ahead and
- 2:08:30throw the The smash Corner in the smash feed.
- 2:08:35Why? So with the post wheel, what
- 2:08:36else do you need from this? Every time we got it, we got to
- 2:08:41take a look at the the smash cornering.
- 2:08:43The smash fade here. All right.
- 2:08:45Let's look at these two. This is the this will be the
- 2:08:51fade, all right. This is the this I mean this is
- 2:09:02your 2 by 2 with the tight end at the bottom.
- 2:09:06Like I said, I mean this is this is the Personnel that they're
- 2:09:10going to be in the most in this is the formation that they'll
- 2:09:14probably use. The most kind of that two by two
- 2:09:20with the tight end. So let's let's look at the kind
- 2:09:27of a because this is kind of a Garth Kowski out wide.
- 2:09:31Yeah pro-spray pro-spray dip. And like I said, a lot of the
- 2:09:37action is going to be with that with that slot receiver.
- 2:09:51So you got that curl to the top, we got the Wheatley fade route
- 2:09:55to the slot. That's the kind of thing right
- 2:10:05there. So many people are getting into
- 2:10:08pattern reading, so the corner and they're looking for number
- 2:10:13two. and when that number two goes vertical, the safeties
- 2:10:19Frozen And it kills you. There it is.
- 2:10:27Again, look at that shallow cross again.
- 2:10:29Yeah, it brings that safety down and the other thing.
- 2:10:32Look at the other safety. I mean he's already 30 yards
- 2:10:35week, he's on an island and he's on the opposite.
- 2:10:40Yeah he's only he's on boundaries side in the place,
- 2:10:42feel tired. The shallow crosses a even if
- 2:10:46even if he was on the right side, the shallow cross is open
- 2:10:50again. And is this going to be a
- 2:10:52little? Is this the curl route again
- 2:10:53Brian at the 40? Play it out.
- 2:10:56Let's see what he does. Well, he's getting held.
- 2:10:59No, no that's an end. He's running a little in.
- 2:11:01Do that. Yeah, so they're running the the
- 2:11:07smash Fade To The Top. They're running, kind of a drive
- 2:11:11with the Dig and the drag. Yeah, to the to the bottom.
- 2:11:19So even if that safety takes away, the Deep route, In this,
- 2:11:25this corner right here. The Courtney, the outside corner
- 2:11:30stays home with a little hitch. There's two guys open, as long
- 2:11:35as they're giving to their second or as long as they're
- 2:11:37giving to their third of their fourth.
- 2:11:39Read the way this thing is set up is its optimal spacing
- 2:11:43because you're getting such mismatches down there, which is
- 2:11:47wild well. Again, you're putting these
- 2:11:50safeties in very hell delicate situations.
- 2:11:54You put me in a very delicate situations.
- 2:12:01We got one more. We got we got, we got one more.
- 2:12:07It's the the mesh mesh wheel. So let's take a look at that
- 2:12:12one. Hey, as a defensive coach I love
- 2:12:17a mesh. You've got to have some special
- 2:12:21cats that want to come in and play with those linebackers like
- 2:12:24that. But if you got those cats, you
- 2:12:30can hurt. Some people with a mesh is is
- 2:12:33Oregon again. Third and six top Edge.
- 2:12:44All right, here we go. Is this trips?
- 2:12:48Or just somebody up that. See the Inland tied in rice or
- 2:12:52twins? Yeah, I think there's another
- 2:12:55receiver up top OKC. No, not it strips.
- 2:12:59I see down here at the bottom. So this is your line.
- 2:13:03This is your industry in line tidy, and look with the trips.
- 2:13:06Yep, at a pistol out of pistol. They are bringing it right here.
- 2:13:16We got people filling the gaps. They don't lay back.
- 2:13:34Yeah. And I mean, there's this gives
- 2:13:38you a lot of options as a quarterback of where you want to
- 2:13:41go. That was primary.
- 2:13:47Your primary is going to be the the wheel.
- 2:13:49If it's there, you're going to throw that.
- 2:13:51But my question is right there, where's the corner?
- 2:13:57Tian is not the corner. There in clear in man.
- 2:14:05Yeah, I think the other Corner went to the trip side.
- 2:14:09Yeah. They're there in man coverage on
- 2:14:10this. There's think they're doing.
- 2:14:13They're playing a single. Hi.
- 2:14:16I just put a defensive end on the running.
- 2:14:18Back of the wheel they should have got bird know what other
- 2:14:21linebacker or strong second hand brother no no no this guy this
- 2:14:27guy right here he's behind the be in the DNA I believe goes up
- 2:14:31feel they're trying to they're trying to Blitz right here.
- 2:14:47I tell you why. Yeah.
- 2:14:59Offensive call against the Zone Blitz.
- 2:15:17Give ten years so dig and Jason at running back.
- 2:15:20He's like yeah I'm throwing it to the running for this man.
- 2:15:24He couldn't throw in soon enough.
- 2:15:26Oh my gosh. Well boys, this has been so fun.
- 2:15:31So educational as two hours and 20 minutes for real.
- 2:15:37We probably could go another hour.
- 2:15:39I mean, I'm not even going joke because I got it.
- 2:15:42I think when talk about the trick plays, Claim.
- 2:15:46They run this thing where they run this thing where they swap
- 2:15:49the quarterback and running back and they run a different bunch
- 2:15:52of different RPO elements off of that.
- 2:15:55Oh my God. Wow.
- 2:16:20What's his name? Maybe hope.
- 2:16:22BB hope. I don't know.
- 2:16:25Its initial cope when when I first got two rows and
- 2:16:29Greenville. He was a head coach at Rocky
- 2:16:32Mountain. High School out there.
- 2:16:33Okay. And he's since retired there,
- 2:16:36he's going to win this coaches and North Carolina High School,
- 2:16:39history, really good. Dude, has time out there.
- 2:16:44It's gone County, Rocky Mountain, those areas.
- 2:16:47I've got to know him a little bit. while we were out there,
- 2:16:51heck of a coach So we kind of talked last week about
- 2:16:57recruiting and stuff and you know you obviously have you
- 2:17:01known Derek Jones, you talk about Holt talk about Glenn who
- 2:17:05coach down and Carolina. Obviously, the Virginia stuff
- 2:17:09with pride in JC and and fontelle Minds.
- 2:17:15It's a plan in place and I look forward to more and more of it
- 2:17:21boys. It's late.
- 2:17:22Let's wrap this up probably. Might have you back on a few
- 2:17:26months after spring game to look at some things.
- 2:17:28So get the hold of the ship, they're ready again, get the
- 2:17:33board, cleared off this time, going to draw some stuff to talk
- 2:17:37about the coaches and you're recruiting and all that stuff.
- 2:17:40One thing I want to bring up, I didn't think to bring it up
- 2:17:43earlier. Look at your defense of coaching
- 2:17:45staff that they brought in Outside of Prague lose three
- 2:17:48years of coaching and Barbs 8 there in another one, on the
- 2:17:52defensive side of the ball with less than 20 years.
- 2:17:54He's trust me, it's very true. Then very true and some of those
- 2:17:59times have been together so a true reality is going to be
- 2:18:04there. Yes, it is.
