Transcript
- 0:07SPEAKER_03: Hey Kelly.
- 0:08SPEAKER_03: Hi, Alex.
- 0:09SPEAKER_03: You want to do a dead end today?
- 0:11SPEAKER_03: I yes, of course I do.
- 0:12SPEAKER_03: I love dead ends and I love spending time with you every Thursday.
- 0:16SPEAKER_03: It's the best.
- 0:17SPEAKER_03: Mm-hmm.
- 0:18SPEAKER_03: Do you remember we did one on Pop Rocks not too long ago?
- 0:21SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 0:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I do remember.
- 0:24SPEAKER_03: What do you remember about?
- 0:25SPEAKER_03: Well, I remember that we we we debunked that myth that um Mikey from Life Serial died from eating Pop Rocks.
- 0:32SPEAKER_03: And I remember that the same guy who who invented Pop Rocks also invented a bunch of other cool tech foods.
- 0:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 0:39SPEAKER_03: Do you remember the guy's name?
- 0:41SPEAKER_04: I don't, but I remember Cool Whip, right?
- 0:43SPEAKER_04: He was the Cool Whip guy.
- 0:45SPEAKER_04: He did.
- 0:45SPEAKER_04: His name was William Mitchell.
- 0:47SPEAKER_04: He invented Pop Rocks and Cool Whip.
- 0:49SPEAKER_04: And he also invented something else.
- 0:52SPEAKER_04: Hmm.
- 0:52SPEAKER_04: What was it?
- 0:54SPEAKER_04: Tang.
- 0:55SPEAKER_03: Oh, yes, we talked.
- 0:57SPEAKER_03: I yes, I forgot about that.
- 0:58SPEAKER_03: The astronaut drink, the orange astronaut drink.
- 1:01SPEAKER_03: Let's talk about Tang.
- 1:03SPEAKER_03: Yes, let's do.
- 1:05SPEAKER_04: Seriously, let's talk about Tang.
- 1:07SPEAKER_04: Let's let's talk some Tang.
- 1:09SPEAKER_04: So before he invented Pop Rocks, and before he invented Cool Whip, um in the 1950s, people in the food business were obsessed with convenience.
- 1:22SPEAKER_04: This was post-war.
- 1:24SPEAKER_04: Um, the kitchen of the future was all about convenience.
- 1:28SPEAKER_04: The housewife of the future was always thinking about, you know, trying to shave time off of uh her her busy day.
- 1:36SPEAKER_04: And the house husband was always thinking about Tang.
- 1:41SPEAKER_04: Yikes.
- 1:43SPEAKER_04: You could take that out too.
- 1:47SPEAKER_04: Everything had to be instant back then.
- 1:51SPEAKER_04: Everyone was looking for ways to have food that was instant.
- 1:55SPEAKER_04: Instant coffee, instant cake mix, frozen dinners started back then with you know uh uh clearance birdseye.
- 2:02SPEAKER_04: Z Z Top did a whole song about that one.
- 2:05SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 2:05SPEAKER_03: That I think you mentioned that on the worst songs ever.
- 2:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I'm not a big fan of that song.
- 2:11SPEAKER_03: But but I I I want to just I want to point out the irony of this real quick.
- 2:14SPEAKER_03: Um, that back then, when everything was fresh, you know, farm fresh, milk was being delivered by the milkman, and you had you had butcher and butter that was churned, and very little was processed, and there were a few preservatives, things would go bad after a few days, and you had to eat it or lose it, you know?
- 2:34SPEAKER_02: And and and people were like, oh no, we need to make this, we need to put lots of chemicals in it and make it last longer and make it stay more convenient and make it easier to make.
- 2:43SPEAKER_04: I think if there's a theme to Dirt Knapp City, what you can really, you know, if there's a thread that goes through it is that everybody is always looking at the future of won't that be better then?
- 2:53SPEAKER_04: And then we almost never improve things in the future.
- 2:57SPEAKER_04: Or if we do, there's a cost to it, right?
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, there's a cost to it, and then hey, you can have this future-proof and very convenient food, but you will all die miserably from death, many diseases it will cause.
- 3:12SPEAKER_03: That's the wicked witch of uh food, food processed food, by the way.
- 3:16SPEAKER_04: There's always this backlash that people want to go back to the way things were before.
- 3:21SPEAKER_04: But in the 1950s, I mean, that's when everybody was obsessed about you know, the future is coming.
- 3:28SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 3:28SPEAKER_04: And our boy William Mitchell was working on an instant orange-flavored drink that was gonna be an alternative to orange juice.
- 3:37SPEAKER_04: Orange juice was really popular back then, yeah.
- 3:39SPEAKER_04: But you know, to have orange juice, you need oranges, and oranges take up a lot of room and you know, um, and they take energy to like you know, um juice oranges and oh yeah.
- 3:52SPEAKER_03: I mean about doing doing this.
- 3:54SPEAKER_03: And by the way, if you haven't heard our orange Julius episode and you're a fan of the oranges, go check that one out.
- 4:00SPEAKER_03: Mm-hmm.
- 4:01SPEAKER_04: Mm-hmm.
- 4:03SPEAKER_04: So he finally released this stuff in 1957, and nobody really liked it.
- 4:10SPEAKER_04: I don't know if you've ever had Tang, but it's not very good.
- 4:12SPEAKER_03: I I have and I don't remember it being terrible.
- 4:15SPEAKER_04: Um, I don't remember orange juice.
- 4:17SPEAKER_04: It's not as good as orange juice, it's not even as good as Sonny D.
- 4:22SPEAKER_04: It's actually worse than Sonny D.
- 4:25SPEAKER_03: Wow, that's that's a pretty low bar.
- 4:27SPEAKER_03: It's a pretty sunny D.
- 4:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 4:29SPEAKER_03: It's not good.
- 4:30SPEAKER_04: It has like a weird aftertaste.
- 4:32SPEAKER_04: It was called Tang because it was, you know, uh tart and zesty and um, you know, um, you know, strong flavor.
- 4:41SPEAKER_04: It did have a strong like flavor to it, but it's not very good.
- 4:45SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 4:45SPEAKER_04: Well parallel to all this, uh or a few years later, I should say, NASA was looking for foods that worked with astronauts.
- 4:57SPEAKER_04: You know, they're always looking for free freeze-dried and light diapers and have a long shelf life, and yeah.
- 5:04SPEAKER_04: So they had this these specs that as this you know had to be lightweight, have a long shelf life, be easy to consume in microgravity.
- 5:12SPEAKER_04: And we know that astronauts need fluids, right?
- 5:15SPEAKER_04: And we and it's and they didn't have bottled water back then, right?
- 5:19SPEAKER_04: Um, they would make their own water on the on there, but not in you know, huge and they and they need the vitamins too, right?
- 5:25SPEAKER_04: They need right, and that's the thing is that tang is vitamin C, right?
- 5:29SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so they put tang.
- 5:31SPEAKER_04: They don't want to get scurvy while they're on the while they're on the ship.
- 5:34SPEAKER_04: So they put this powdered drink on John Glenn's Mercury 6 mission in 1962.
- 5:40SPEAKER_04: Yeah, John Glenn.
- 5:41SPEAKER_04: Well, I don't think we I mean we weren't alive back then, but I don't think I mean you see it in movies, but I don't think you can really appreciate like how big the space program was back then.
- 5:52SPEAKER_04: And we've talked about it on uh Neil Armstrong episode, we've talked about it a little bit, but like the space program was the future, and that's where it's at.
- 6:02SPEAKER_04: And General Foods, the maker of all these um, you know, pop tarts and cool whip and tang, they really capitalized on this and then promoted it as the drink of the American space program.
- 6:14SPEAKER_04: Now, never with the um cooperation of NASA, they didn't say like it's the official drink of NASA didn't play with that, but they didn't also tell them to stop.
- 6:26SPEAKER_04: And by 1966, this tagline for Tang was chosen for the Gemini astronauts, you know.
- 6:33SPEAKER_04: So all of a sudden, everybody wanted to be a part of that.
- 6:36SPEAKER_04: It's like, wow, I could be just like an astronaut if I drink this, and you could see, you know, kids, you know, I'm all right.
- 6:42SPEAKER_01: They're suckers.
- 6:43SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 6:43SPEAKER_04: You couldn't get them to drink this nasty stuff, and now everybody wants it because you know the astronauts are drinking it.
- 6:50SPEAKER_04: So you've got this NASA basically endorsement, right?
- 6:53SPEAKER_04: And now people are interested because Tang equals the future.
- 6:58SPEAKER_04: Um well, the funny part is the astronauts hated it too.
- 7:01SPEAKER_04: And um in 2013, they asked Buzz Aldrin about Tang, and he said it he summed up in two words Tang sucks.
- 7:12SPEAKER_04: Wow.
- 7:13SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and actually he wrote about that in more glowing terms, but he mentioned in his his book how just nobody liked Tang, and they it was like one of the bad parts of going into space is that they had to drink this garbage.
- 7:26SPEAKER_04: Um Tang is actually um, you know, like we say, when we do these dead ends, that doesn't mean they're completely out.
- 7:32SPEAKER_04: It still is made, owned by uh owned by you know there's a company called Kraft Heinz, you know that yeah, yeah, it's gross, isn't it?
- 7:42SPEAKER_04: Um change a few letters, it's the world corporation basically.
- 7:47SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 7:48SPEAKER_04: Um in Canada, they still they have liquid tang.
- 7:53SPEAKER_04: In Canada, it's not even the powder powder.
- 7:55SPEAKER_04: Buy it in the jug, and they even have grape-flavored tang.
- 7:59SPEAKER_04: But I don't think they have it here.
- 8:01SPEAKER_04: I think that's only the Canada thing.
- 8:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's a uh you eat you drink that with your poutine.
- 8:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 8:06SPEAKER_04: Careful.
- 8:08SPEAKER_03: That's a that's a that's a thing.
- 8:09SPEAKER_03: That's a real thing in Canada.
- 8:11SPEAKER_04: I know, I know, I know.
- 8:12SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 8:12SPEAKER_04: So listen to me.
- 8:14SPEAKER_04: I have made a list of my of the top ten powdered drinks of all time.
- 8:19SPEAKER_04: This is my definitive list of my favorite 10 powdered drinks of all time.
- 8:25SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 8:26SPEAKER_04: You want to start at number 10?
- 8:28SPEAKER_04: Number 10, I have the Margaritaville margarita mix that you can actually use to make margaritas, but you can also they come in little um sleeves where you can just um put it in a bottle of water and mix it up and have like margarita-flavored water.
- 8:46SPEAKER_03: Wait, is it is it um is it um alcohol?
- 8:50SPEAKER_04: No, you can mix it with alcohol, it's just margarita flavored, it's really quite tasty.
- 8:56SPEAKER_04: If you mix it with tequila, you've got an instant margarita.
- 8:59SPEAKER_04: But if you just want, you know, flavored water, it's it's a nice flavor too.
- 9:03SPEAKER_04: It tastes like margarita.
- 9:04SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, it's good.
- 9:06SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 9:07SPEAKER_04: What are you looking up?
- 9:09SPEAKER_04: Um, this margaritaville stuff.
- 9:11SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 9:13SPEAKER_04: Um number nine, I have Gatorade.
- 9:18SPEAKER_03: Do you remember powdered Gatorade?
- 9:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 9:21SPEAKER_03: Um, as a matter of fact, many times when when I played Little League, um, you know, we had a big, big cooler.
- 9:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like one of those Home Depot coolers.
- 9:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah, not well, not not a cooler that you put drinks in, but a round one that had liquid in it and it had the little nozzle on the bottom.
- 9:36SPEAKER_04: That's what I'm saying, like the orange one, the orange depot ones, yeah.
- 9:39SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 9:39SPEAKER_03: And that and that one was often filled with um powdered Gatorade and water.
- 9:44SPEAKER_03: And the best thing is you had to get the mix right.
- 9:47SPEAKER_04: Well, that's what I was gonna say is the best thing is that you could play with that and have it be way stronger than regular Gatorade, you know, that you would get in a in a bottle that's a little watered down, or you can mix different flavors, you can mix it up.
- 10:03SPEAKER_04: And you're talking about throwing a garden hose in this cooler too, right?
- 10:06SPEAKER_03: Yep, yep, and usually some ice.
- 10:09SPEAKER_04: Yep.
- 10:09SPEAKER_04: In when I was in Longhorn Band, we used a uh a cheap version called Quick Kick.
- 10:20SPEAKER_03: Really?
- 10:22SPEAKER_03: The Texas Longhorns couldn't afford real Gatorade, or was this a Was this a thing against the Florida Gators?
- 10:27SPEAKER_04: I mean, were they trying to know it was um, but I put Gatorade at number nine.
- 10:32SPEAKER_04: Okay, number eight.
- 10:34SPEAKER_04: I hope you like this.
- 10:36SPEAKER_04: Uh Hawaiian punch.
- 10:38SPEAKER_04: Um, you know the powder, Hawaiian punch.
- 10:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 10:43SPEAKER_03: How about a nice Hawaiian punch?
- 10:45SPEAKER_03: I think we had that at summer camp and we called it bug juice.
- 10:49SPEAKER_03: We had we called it bug juice, yeah.
- 10:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because it again flies and we had it in pitchers.
- 10:54SPEAKER_03: You can make it fly as strong as you want.
- 10:56SPEAKER_03: I think it's it was it was very weak at camp.
- 11:00SPEAKER_03: Like everything was everything was, you know, they were trying to stretch their budget as much as possible.
- 11:04SPEAKER_03: So it was a tiny little scoop in a giant in a in a pitcher at the table, and then the fly would land in it, and it was bug juice, and you drank it anyway.
- 11:13SPEAKER_04: I think my thing is the opposite, like make it stronger than you would get it in a in a bottle.
- 11:18SPEAKER_04: Hawaiian punch, don't sleep on Hawaiian punch.
- 11:21SPEAKER_04: Number seven, Nestle's quick strawberry.
- 11:27SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 11:28SPEAKER_04: I I'm familiar with the rabbit, you know they call it Nest Quick now, but when we were kids, it was quick Q U I K.
- 11:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 11:36SPEAKER_03: Nestle's I don't think I've ever had that.
- 11:39SPEAKER_03: And didn't they have a chocolate one too?
- 11:41SPEAKER_04: That's my number six.
- 11:43SPEAKER_04: Oh, okay, okay.
- 11:44SPEAKER_04: Number six.
- 11:45SPEAKER_04: I put chocolate above the strawberry, although strawberry was more of a novelty.
- 11:50SPEAKER_04: But you and it's fun to have strawberry milk.
- 11:52SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 11:53SPEAKER_03: But it's a powdered drink.
- 11:54SPEAKER_03: Okay, yeah, yeah, fair.
- 11:56SPEAKER_03: I hadn't thought about the things you put in.
- 11:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because I guess like Swissmas, right?
- 11:59SPEAKER_03: Dude, that's my number five.
- 12:02SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 12:03SPEAKER_03: We are so in sync, Alex.
- 12:04SPEAKER_04: In the original version of this, I had actually powdered gravy on here, but I uh um but yeah, number five is Swissmas.
- 12:12SPEAKER_04: Um particularly with the little um marshmallows.
- 12:15SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you mix that with milk, and that's that's not bad.
- 12:21SPEAKER_04: Number four.
- 12:23SPEAKER_04: Um now you you won't like this because you've already talked about how you don't like um diet drinks, but um crystal light lemonade.
- 12:34SPEAKER_04: I like crystal light.
- 12:36SPEAKER_04: I don't like crystal light.
- 12:40SPEAKER_04: Terrible.
- 12:41SPEAKER_04: That's where you'd put gravy.
- 12:42SPEAKER_04: Number four.
- 12:43SPEAKER_03: I I I'd rather drink gravy, honestly.
- 12:45SPEAKER_03: I'd rather drink gravy than crystal light.
- 12:48SPEAKER_04: Number three, I think nobody can deny this.
- 12:51SPEAKER_04: It might not be good.
- 12:53SPEAKER_04: No, it might not be good for you, but damn does it taste good.
- 12:57SPEAKER_04: Country time.
- 13:00SPEAKER_04: You know holy cow, country time is good.
- 13:04SPEAKER_04: So it's all sugar.
- 13:06SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna kind of disagree a little bit with you because literally yesterday, yesterday, uh my wife and I are driving back home.
- 13:16SPEAKER_03: We had been at the grocery store, and there's uh um these kids on the road on the way back to our house, kind of a little country road, and there is uh they're selling lemonade.
- 13:28SPEAKER_03: And I have to stop.
- 13:30SPEAKER_03: I have to, I anytime kids are selling lemonade, I will stop and buy some because I just feel like it's the right thing to do.
- 13:36SPEAKER_03: And so we pull over, and all I've got's quarters.
- 13:39SPEAKER_03: I had like, you know, one of those rolls of quarters I actually cracked open to pay them, but it was probably country time, it was some sort of powdered lemonade.
- 13:48SPEAKER_03: And it it here's the thing it wasn't cold, it was it was probably some of the worst lemonade I've ever had.
- 13:54SPEAKER_03: And I don't have high expectations.
- 13:55SPEAKER_03: That's like country time's fault.
- 13:57SPEAKER_04: They had the mix wrong, it wasn't cold.
- 13:59SPEAKER_03: Okay, but but can I show you one?
- 14:01SPEAKER_03: Can I say one thing?
- 14:03SPEAKER_03: And that is if they had just put a slice of lemon on the cup or in it, it would have been so much more convincing.
- 14:11SPEAKER_03: That's all hey kids, if you're if you're gonna taste it any better.
- 14:14SPEAKER_03: If you're under 10 and you're listening to Dirt Nap City, first of all, great for you because you're a very smart child and a very you're gonna go far in life.
- 14:22SPEAKER_03: But number two, if you ever open a lemonade stand, when you do uh if you use Country Time or Crystal Light or whatever you use to make your lemonade, put a slice of lemon in it.
- 14:35SPEAKER_04: I disagree.
- 14:36SPEAKER_04: You you don't need kids cutting lemons.
- 14:39SPEAKER_03: The parents, the parents do it all.
- 14:41SPEAKER_03: Hey, helicopters.
- 14:42SPEAKER_04: No, no.
- 14:44SPEAKER_04: The key to a lemonade stand, two things ice and sugar.
- 14:49SPEAKER_04: That's all you need.
- 14:50SPEAKER_04: Is you make something better if it's iced down, and the more sugar you put in it, the more you're gonna get repeat business.
- 14:57SPEAKER_04: Um number two is uh Kool-Aid, the flavor called purposaurus rex.
- 15:07SPEAKER_03: Never had it.
- 15:08SPEAKER_04: Man, it's grape, it's grape, and it is damn good.
- 15:12SPEAKER_04: And my number one powdered drink of all time is also Kool-Aid, and it's a flavor called Sharkleberry Finn.
- 15:22SPEAKER_04: It is the best.
- 15:23SPEAKER_04: Is it like blueberry?
- 15:25SPEAKER_04: Mm-mm.
- 15:25SPEAKER_04: It's more like a raspberry, strawberry, raspberry, whatever.
- 15:30SPEAKER_04: It's just it's sharkleberry.
- 15:32SPEAKER_04: So let me let me ask you a little bit.
- 15:33SPEAKER_04: Sharkleberry fin and purple source rex, you almost it's almost one A and one B.
- 15:38SPEAKER_04: They're both so good.
- 15:39SPEAKER_04: Kool-Aid is so good.
- 15:41SPEAKER_04: It's not good for you, but man, if we're talking powdered drinks, all ten of these blow tang away.
- 15:48SPEAKER_03: Well, what if you took that purple source rex and you put um you put an actual grape in it?
- 15:58SPEAKER_03: I just feel like that's a little bit of authenticity.
- 16:01SPEAKER_04: First of all, first of all, grape drinks don't taste like grapes.
- 16:06SPEAKER_04: Grape drink is its own flavor.
- 16:09SPEAKER_04: That's not a fruit.
- 16:10SPEAKER_04: You know, that's not it's it's grape drink is grape.
- 16:13SPEAKER_04: Even though it has the name the name of a fruit in it, grape.
- 16:16SPEAKER_04: Uh purple saurus doesn't have the word grape in it at all.
- 16:19SPEAKER_04: It's purple.
- 16:20SPEAKER_04: It's purple flavored.
- 16:22SPEAKER_04: And I think when we were kids, we didn't we always it was the parents that would always correct us and say, No, it's grape.
- 16:28SPEAKER_04: We'd say, they'd say, What flavor is it?
- 16:30SPEAKER_04: We'd say purple, and we were right.
- 16:32SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it was purple flavored because it's not grape flavored, but we get corrected, and that's wrong.
- 16:38SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 16:38SPEAKER_04: But sharkleberry fin is like a I think it's a combination of the best, the best um artificial berries.
- 16:46SPEAKER_04: But um Sharkleberry Finn, Purposaurus Rex, the two best powdered drinks of all time.
- 16:52SPEAKER_04: Uh Lowry's gravy gets an honorable mention.
- 16:57SPEAKER_03: Lowry's.
- 16:58SPEAKER_03: I forgot about Lowry's.
- 17:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 17:00SPEAKER_03: I I could see that.
- 17:01SPEAKER_03: If if I I would be in pretty much lockstep with your list, I haven't tried all of them, but if you took if you replaced the crystal light with Lowry's gravy, I would I would agree with your list.
- 17:12SPEAKER_03: All right, bet.
- 17:13SPEAKER_03: Let's go.
- 17:15SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 17:16SPEAKER_03: Well, so uh real quick, tang.
- 17:19SPEAKER_03: You know the other meaning of tang uh with regard to cutlery.
- 17:26SPEAKER_03: I do not.
- 17:27SPEAKER_04: You didn't know you were going there.
- 17:28SPEAKER_04: No, I didn't know you were going there.
- 17:30SPEAKER_04: I thought we were gonna have to press end meeting.
- 17:33SPEAKER_03: No, no, no.
- 17:34SPEAKER_03: Uh so tang on a knife.
- 17:37SPEAKER_03: Uh have you ever heard like full tang?
- 17:40SPEAKER_03: No.
- 17:40SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 17:41SPEAKER_04: So a knife my hand on the mute button, though, just to let you know.
- 17:44SPEAKER_03: No, no, no, no, no.
- 17:46SPEAKER_03: Uh in a knife, we we were talking about straight razors, so this is kind of relevant.
- 17:50SPEAKER_03: Um, there is a part of the knife that is not the blade, but it's also not the handle.
- 17:55SPEAKER_03: It's the metal part that goes into the handle.
- 17:58SPEAKER_03: So a full tang knife is the full length, it's all metal, the full length of the knife, and then the blade the handle is riveted on to the metal part on the bottom.
- 18:09SPEAKER_03: That's the tang, is is that part that it's riveted onto.
- 18:13SPEAKER_03: If it's not full tang, it actually could be a uh more likely to break.
