- 0:00Speaker 1: Section eleven of the Book of Enoch, translated by Robert
- 0:04Speaker 1: Henry Charles. This LibriVox recording is in the public domain,
- 0:08Speaker 1: Chapter seventy six. The twelve Windows and their Portals, and
- 0:13Speaker 1: at the ends of the Earth. I saw twelve portals
- 0:15Speaker 1: open to all the quarters of the heaven, from which
- 0:18Speaker 1: the winds go forth and blow over the earth. Three
- 0:21Speaker 1: of them are open on the face, in other words,
- 0:23Speaker 1: the east of the heavens, and three in the west,
- 0:26Speaker 1: and three on the right, in other words, the south
- 0:29Speaker 1: of the heaven, and three on the left, in otherwards
- 0:32Speaker 1: the north. And the three first are those of the east,
- 0:36Speaker 1: and three are of the north, and three after those
- 0:39Speaker 1: on the left of the south, and three of the west.
- 0:43Speaker 1: Through four of these come winds of blessing and prosperity,
- 0:47Speaker 1: And from those eight come hurtful winds. When they are sent,
- 0:51Speaker 1: they bring destruction on all the earth and on the
- 0:54Speaker 1: water upon it, and on all who dwell thereon, and
- 0:58Speaker 1: on everything which is in the water and on the land.
- 1:02Speaker 1: And the first wind from those portals, called the east wind,
- 1:05Speaker 1: comes forth through the first portal, which is in the east,
- 1:09Speaker 1: inclining towards the south. From it come forth desolation, drought, heat,
- 1:15Speaker 1: and destruction. And through the second portal in the middle
- 1:18Speaker 1: comes what is fitting, and from it there come rain
- 1:22Speaker 1: and fruitfulness and prosperity and dew. And through the third portal,
- 1:26Speaker 1: which lies toward the north, come cold and drought. And
- 1:30Speaker 1: after these come forth the south winds through three portals.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Through the first portal of them inclining to the east,
- 1:37Speaker 1: comes forth a hot wind, and through the middle portal
- 1:41Speaker 1: next to it, there come forth fragrant smells and dew
- 1:45Speaker 1: and rain and prosperity in health. And through the third portal,
- 1:49Speaker 1: lying to the west, come forth dew and rain, locusts
- 1:53Speaker 1: and desolation. And after these the north winds. From the
- 1:58Speaker 1: seventh portal in the east come dew and rain, locusts
- 2:02Speaker 1: and desolation, And from the middle portal come in a
- 2:05Speaker 1: direct direction health and rain and dew and prosperity. And
- 2:10Speaker 1: through the third portal in the west come cloud and hoar,
- 2:13Speaker 1: frost and snow and rain and dew in locusts. And
- 2:18Speaker 1: after these four are the west winds. Through the first
- 2:21Speaker 1: portal adjoining the north, come forth dew and hoarfrost and
- 2:25Speaker 1: cold and snow and frost, and from the middle portal
- 2:29Speaker 1: come forth dew and rain, and prosperity and blessing. And
- 2:33Speaker 1: through the last portal, which adjoins the south, come forth
- 2:37Speaker 1: drought and desolation, and burning and destruction. And the twelve
- 2:42Speaker 1: portals of the four quarters of the heaven are therewith completed.
- 2:45Speaker 1: And all their laws, and all their plagues, and all
- 2:48Speaker 1: their benefactions have I shown to thee my son Methusela,
- 2:52Speaker 1: chapter seventy seven. The four quarters of the world, the
- 2:56Speaker 1: seven mountains, the seven rivers, and so on, chapter seventy seven.
- 3:01Speaker 1: And the first quarter is called the East because it
- 3:04Speaker 1: is the first, and the second the South, because the
- 3:08Speaker 1: most high will descend there. Yea, therein quite a special sense,
- 3:13Speaker 1: will he who is blessed forever descend. And the west
- 3:16Speaker 1: quarter is named the diminished, because there all the luminaries
- 3:20Speaker 1: of the heaven wain and go down. And the fourth quarter,
- 3:24Speaker 1: named the North. Is divided into three parts. The first
- 3:28Speaker 1: of them is for the dwelling of men, and the
- 3:31Speaker 1: second contain seas of water and the abysses and forests
- 3:36Speaker 1: and rivers and darkness and clouds, and the third part
- 3:40Speaker 1: contains the Garden of righteousness. I saw seven high mountains
- 3:44Speaker 1: higher than all the mountains which are on the earth,
- 3:47Speaker 1: and thence comes forth hoarfrost, and days, seasons and years
- 3:52Speaker 1: pass away. I saw seven rivers on the earth, larger
- 3:56Speaker 1: than all the rivers. One of them, coming from the west,
- 3:59Speaker 1: pours its waters into the Great Sea. And these two
- 4:03Speaker 1: come from the north to the sea and pour their
- 4:06Speaker 1: waters into the Erythrian Sea in the east. And the
- 4:09Speaker 1: remaining four come forth on the side of the North
- 4:12Speaker 1: to their own sea, two of them to the Erythrian Sea,
- 4:16Speaker 1: and two into the Great Sea, and discharge themselves there,
- 4:20Speaker 1: And some say into the desert. Seven great islands I
- 4:24Speaker 1: saw in the sea and in the mainland, two in
- 4:27Speaker 1: the mainland, and five in the Great Sea, Chapter seventy seven.
- 4:32Speaker 1: The Sun and Moon the waxing and waning of the
- 4:35Speaker 1: Moon Chapter seventy seven. And the names of the Sun
- 4:40Speaker 1: are the following, the first or Jahrees and the second Thomas.
- 4:46Speaker 1: And the moon has four names. The first name is Isoja,
- 4:51Speaker 1: the second Ibra, the third Bonasse, and the fourth Irae.
- 4:57Speaker 1: These are the two great luminaries. Conference is like the
- 5:01Speaker 1: circumference of the heaven, and the size of the circumference
- 5:04Speaker 1: of both is alike. In the circumference of the sun,
- 5:08Speaker 1: there are seven portions of light which are added to it,
- 5:12Speaker 1: more than to the moon, and in definite measures, it
- 5:15Speaker 1: is transferred till the seventh portion of the sun is exhausted,
- 5:20Speaker 1: and they set and enter the portals of the west,
- 5:22Speaker 1: and make their revolution by the north, and come forth
- 5:25Speaker 1: through the eastern portals on the face of the heaven.
- 5:29Speaker 1: And when the moon rises, one fourteenth part appears in
- 5:33Speaker 1: the heaven, the light becomes full in her. On the
- 5:36Speaker 1: fourteenth day she accomplishes her light, and fifteen parts of
- 5:41Speaker 1: light are transferred to her till the fifteenth day, when
- 5:44Speaker 1: her light is accomplished according to the sign of the year,
- 5:47Speaker 1: and she becomes fifteen parts, and the moon grows by
- 5:51Speaker 1: the addition of fourteenth parts, and in her waning, the
- 5:55Speaker 1: moon decreases on the first day to fourteen parts of
- 5:58Speaker 1: her light, on the second to thirteen parts of light
- 6:02Speaker 1: on the third to twelve, on the fourth to eleven,
- 6:06Speaker 1: on the fifth to ten, on the sixth to nine,
- 6:09Speaker 1: on the seventh to eight, on the eighth to seven,
- 6:13Speaker 1: on the ninth to six, on the tenth to five,
- 6:16Speaker 1: on the eleventh to four, on the twelfth to three,
- 6:20Speaker 1: on the thirteenth to two on the fourteenth to the
- 6:24Speaker 1: half of a seventh, and all her remaining light disappears
- 6:28Speaker 1: wholly on the fifteenth. And in certain months the month
- 6:32Speaker 1: has twenty nine days, and once twenty eight. And Uriel
- 6:37Speaker 1: showed me another law. When the light is transferred to
- 6:40Speaker 1: the moon, and on which side it is transferred to
- 6:43Speaker 1: her by the sun. During all the period during which
- 6:46Speaker 1: the moon is growing in her light, she is transferring
- 6:49Speaker 1: it to herself, when the opposite to the sun. During
- 6:52Speaker 1: the fourteen days, her light is accomplished in the heaven,
- 6:56Speaker 1: and when she is illumined throughout, her light is accomplished
- 6:59Speaker 1: full in the heaven. And on the first day she
- 7:02Speaker 1: is called the new moon, for on that day the
- 7:05Speaker 1: light rises upon her. She becomes full moon, exactly on
- 7:09Speaker 1: the day when the sun sets in the west and
- 7:11Speaker 1: from the east. She rises at night, and the moon
- 7:14Speaker 1: shines the whole night through till the sun rises over
- 7:17Speaker 1: against her, and the moon is seen over against the
- 7:20Speaker 1: sun on the side. Whence the light of the moon
- 7:23Speaker 1: comes forth. There again she wanes till all the light vanishes,
- 7:27Speaker 1: and all the days of the month or at an end,
- 7:30Speaker 1: and her circumference is empty, void of light. And three
- 7:34Speaker 1: months she makes of thirty days, and at her time
- 7:37Speaker 1: she makes three months of twenty nine days each, in
- 7:41Speaker 1: which she accomplishes her waning in the first period of time,
- 7:44Speaker 1: and in the first portal for one hundred and seventy
- 7:47Speaker 1: seven days, and in the time of her going out
- 7:51Speaker 1: she appears for three months of thirty days each, and
- 7:54Speaker 1: for three months she appears of twenty nine each. At
- 7:58Speaker 1: night she appears like a man for twenty days each time,
- 8:02Speaker 1: and by day she appears like the heaven. And there
- 8:05Speaker 1: is nothing else in her save her light. Chapter seventy
- 8:10Speaker 1: nine to eighty. Recapitulation of several of the laws, Chapter
- 8:15Speaker 1: seventy nine. And now, my son, I have shown the everything,
- 8:20Speaker 1: and the law of all the stars of the heaven
- 8:22Speaker 1: is completed. And he showed me all the laws of
- 8:25Speaker 1: these for every day and for every season of bearing rule,
- 8:28Speaker 1: and for every year and for its going forth, and
- 8:32Speaker 1: for the order prescribed to it every month and every week,
- 8:36Speaker 1: and the waning of the moon, which takes place in
- 8:38Speaker 1: the sixth portal. For in this sixth portal her light
- 8:41Speaker 1: is accomplished. And after that there is the beginning of
- 8:45Speaker 1: the waning, and the waning which takes place in the
- 8:48Speaker 1: first portal in its season, till one hundred and seventy
- 8:52Speaker 1: seven days are accomplished, reckoned according to weeks twenty five
- 8:57Speaker 1: weeks and two days. She falls behind the Sun and
- 9:01Speaker 1: the order of the stars exactly five days in the
- 9:03Speaker 1: course of one period. And when this place which thou
- 9:07Speaker 1: seest has been traversed, such is the picture and sketch
- 9:11Speaker 1: of every luminary which ur Reel. The archangel, who is
- 9:15Speaker 1: their leader, showed unto me Chapter eighty. And in those
- 9:20Speaker 1: days the angel Uriel answered and said to me, behold,
- 9:23Speaker 1: I have shown thee everything, Enoch, and I have revealed
- 9:26Speaker 1: everything to THEE that thou shouldst see, this Sun and
- 9:30Speaker 1: this moon, and the leaders of the stars of the heaven,
- 9:33Speaker 1: and all those who turn them their tasks and times
- 9:36Speaker 1: and departures. Chapter eighty, verses two through eight perversion of
- 9:42Speaker 1: nature and the heavenly bodies owning to the sin of men.
- 9:46Speaker 1: And in the days of the sinners, the years shall
- 9:48Speaker 1: be shortened, and their seeds shall be tardy on their
- 9:51Speaker 1: lands and fields, and all things on the earth shall
- 9:55Speaker 1: alter and shall not appear in their time, and the
- 9:58Speaker 1: rain shall be kept back in heaven shall withhold it.
- 10:02Speaker 1: And in those times the fruits of the earth shall
- 10:04Speaker 1: be backward and shall not grow in their time, and
- 10:07Speaker 1: the fruits of the trees shall be withheld in their time.
- 10:11Speaker 1: And the moon shall alter her order and not appear
- 10:14Speaker 1: at her time. And in those days the sun shall
- 10:17Speaker 1: be seen, and he shall journey in the evening on
- 10:20Speaker 1: the extremity of the great chariot in the west, and
- 10:23Speaker 1: shall shine more brightly than accords with the order of light.
- 10:28Speaker 1: And many chiefs of the stars shall transgress the order prescribed,
- 10:32Speaker 1: and these shall alter their orbits and tasks, and not
- 10:35Speaker 1: appear at the seasons prescribed to them. And the whole
- 10:39Speaker 1: order of the stars shall be concealed from the sinners,
- 10:42Speaker 1: and the thoughts of those on the earth shall err
- 10:45Speaker 1: concerning them, and they shall be altered from all their ways. Yea,
- 10:49Speaker 1: they shall err and take them to be gods, and
- 10:53Speaker 1: evil shall be multiplied upon them, and punishment shall come
- 10:56Speaker 1: upon them, so as to destroy all eight the heavenly
- 11:01Speaker 1: Tablets and the mission of Enoch chapter eighty one. And
- 11:05Speaker 1: he said, unto me, observe Enoch these heavenly tablets, and
- 11:10Speaker 1: read what is written thereon, and mark every individual fact,
- 11:13Speaker 1: And I observed the heavenly tablets and read everything which
- 11:17Speaker 1: was written thereon, and understood everything, and read the book
- 11:21Speaker 1: of all the deeds of mankind, and of all the
- 11:23Speaker 1: children of flesh that shall be upon the earth to
- 11:26Speaker 1: the remotest generations. And forthwith I blessed the Great Lord,
- 11:31Speaker 1: the King of Glory forever, in that he has made
- 11:33Speaker 1: all the works of the world. And I have stoled
- 11:36Speaker 1: the Lord because of his patience, and blessed him because
- 11:39Speaker 1: of the children of men. And after that, I said,
- 11:43Speaker 1: blessed is a man who dies in righteousness and goodness,
- 11:46Speaker 1: concerning whom there is no book of unrighteousness written, and
- 11:50Speaker 1: against whom no day of judgment shall be found. And
- 11:53Speaker 1: those seven Holy Ones brought me and placed me on
- 11:56Speaker 1: the earth before the door of my house, and said
- 11:58Speaker 1: to me, declare everything to thy son, Methuselah, and show
- 12:02Speaker 1: to all thy children that no flesh is righteous in
- 12:04Speaker 1: the sight of the Lord, for he is their creator.
- 12:08Speaker 1: One year we will leave thee with thy son, till
- 12:11Speaker 1: thou givest thy last commands, that thou mayst teach thy
- 12:15Speaker 1: children and record it for them, and testify to all
- 12:17Speaker 1: thy children. And in the second year, they shall take
- 12:20Speaker 1: THEE from their midst. Let thy heart be strong, for
- 12:24Speaker 1: the good shall announce righteousness to the good. The righteous
- 12:28Speaker 1: with the righteous, shall rejoice and shall offer congratulation to
- 12:31Speaker 1: one another. But the sinners shall die with the sinners,
- 12:35Speaker 1: and the apostate go down with the apostate. And those
- 12:39Speaker 1: who practice righteousness shall die on account of the deeds
- 12:41Speaker 1: of men, and be taken away on account of the
- 12:44Speaker 1: doings of the godless. And in those days they cease
- 12:48Speaker 1: to speak to me. And I came to my people
- 12:50Speaker 1: blessing the Lord of the world. Chapter eighty two, charge
- 12:55Speaker 1: given to Enoch, the four inter calorie days, the stars
- 12:59Speaker 1: which lead the seasons, and the months chapter eighty two.
- 13:04Speaker 1: And now, my son, Methuselah, all these things I am
- 13:08Speaker 1: recounting to THEE in writing down for THEE. And I
- 13:11Speaker 1: have revealed to THEE everything and given THEE books concerning
- 13:15Speaker 1: all these. So preserve, my son, Methuselah, the books from
- 13:18Speaker 1: thy father's hand, and see that thou deliver them to
- 13:22Speaker 1: the generations of the world. I have given wisdom to
- 13:25Speaker 1: THEE and to thy children, and thy children that shall
- 13:28Speaker 1: be to THEE, that they may give it to their
- 13:31Speaker 1: children for generations this wisdom, namely that passeth their thought.
- 13:37Speaker 1: And those who understand it shall not sleep, but shall
- 13:40Speaker 1: listen with the ear, that they may learn this wisdom.
- 13:43Speaker 1: And it shall please those that eat thereof better than
- 13:46Speaker 1: good food. Blessed are all the righteous. Blessed are all
- 13:51Speaker 1: those who walk in the way of righteousness, and sin
- 13:53Speaker 1: not as the sinners. In the reckoning of all their days,
- 13:56Speaker 1: in which the Son traverses the heaven, entering into and
- 14:00Speaker 1: departing from the portals for thirty days, with the heads
- 14:04Speaker 1: of thousands of the order of the stars, together with
- 14:08Speaker 1: the four which are intercalated, which divide the four portions
- 14:11Speaker 1: of the year, which lead them, and enter with them
- 14:15Speaker 1: four days. Owing to them, men shall be at fault
- 14:19Speaker 1: and not reckon them in the whole reckoning of the year. Yea,
- 14:22Speaker 1: men shall be at fault and not recognize them accurately,
- 14:26Speaker 1: for they belong to the reckoning of the year, and
- 14:29Speaker 1: are truly recorded thereon forever, one in the first portal,
- 14:33Speaker 1: and one in the third, and one in the fourth,
- 14:36Speaker 1: and one in the sixth. And the year is completed
- 14:40Speaker 1: in three hundred and sixty four days, and the account
- 14:43Speaker 1: thereof is accurate, and the recorded reckoning thereof exact. For
- 14:48Speaker 1: the luminaries and months, and festivals and years and days
- 14:52Speaker 1: has Uriel shown and revealed to me to whom the
- 14:56Speaker 1: Lord of the whole creation of the world hath subjected
- 14:59Speaker 1: the host of Hea. And he has power over night
- 15:03Speaker 1: and day in the heaven to cause the light to
- 15:05Speaker 1: give light to men, sun, moon, and stars, and all
- 15:09Speaker 1: the powers of the heaven which revolve in their circular chariots.
- 15:14Speaker 1: And these are the orders of the stars, which set
- 15:16Speaker 1: in their places, and in their seasons and festivals and months.
- 15:21Speaker 1: And these are the names of those who lead them,
- 15:23Speaker 1: who watch that they enter at their times, in their orders,
- 15:27Speaker 1: in their seasons, in their months, in their periods of dominion,
- 15:31Speaker 1: and in their positions. They are four leaders who divide
- 15:35Speaker 1: the four parts of the year enter first, and after
- 15:38Speaker 1: them the twelve leaders of the orders who divide the months.
- 15:42Speaker 1: And for the three hundred and sixty days, there are
- 15:46Speaker 1: heads over thousands who divide the days, and for the
- 15:49Speaker 1: four intercalorie days there are the leaders which sunder the
- 15:54Speaker 1: four parts of the year. And these heads over thousands
- 15:58Speaker 1: are intercalated between leaders and leader, each behind a station,
- 16:02Speaker 1: but their leaders make the division. And these are the
- 16:05Speaker 1: names of the leaders who divide the four parts of
- 16:08Speaker 1: the year, which are ordained Milkhayel Haalemelek and Meleshal and Narrol,
- 16:16Speaker 1: and the names of those who lead them Ad Naral
- 16:19Speaker 1: I yasusa El and ilome L. These three follow the
- 16:24Speaker 1: leaders of the orders, and there is one that follows
- 16:26Speaker 1: the three leaders of the orders, which follow those leaders
- 16:30Speaker 1: of stations that divide the four parts of the year.
- 16:34Speaker 1: In the beginning of the year, Melkayow rises first and rules,
- 16:38Speaker 1: who is named Tamanian Sun. And all the days of
- 16:41Speaker 1: his dominion whilst he bear's rule are ninety one days.
- 16:45Speaker 1: And these are the signs of the days which are
- 16:48Speaker 1: to be seen on earth in the days of his dominion,
- 16:51Speaker 1: sweat and heat and calms, and all the trees bear fruit,
- 16:56Speaker 1: and leaves are produced on all the trees, and the
- 16:59Speaker 1: hut harvest of wheat, and the rose flowers, and all
- 17:03Speaker 1: the flowers which come forth in the field. But the
- 17:06Speaker 1: trees of the winter season become withered. And these are
- 17:09Speaker 1: the names of the leaders which are under them, berkha
- 17:13Speaker 1: Al Zeleebzel, and another who is added a head of
- 17:17Speaker 1: a thousand called Hluyasef, and the days of the dominion
- 17:20Speaker 1: of this leader are at an end. The next leader
- 17:24Speaker 1: after him is Hellimelech, whom one names the shining Sun.
- 17:29Speaker 1: And all the days of his light are ninety one days.
- 17:32Speaker 1: And these are the signs of his days on the earth,
- 17:35Speaker 1: glowing heat and dryness, and the trees ripen their fruits
- 17:39Speaker 1: and produce all their fruits ripe and ready, and the
- 17:42Speaker 1: sheep pear and become pregnant, and all the fruits of
- 17:45Speaker 1: the earth are gathered in, and everything that is in
- 17:48Speaker 1: the fields and the wine press. These things take place
- 17:52Speaker 1: in the days of his dominion. These are the names
- 17:55Speaker 1: and the orders and the leaders of those heads of
- 17:57Speaker 1: thousands Gida y yaal k l and Hal, and the
- 18:03Speaker 1: name of the head of a thousand which is added
- 18:05Speaker 1: to them, Asphel. And the days of his dominion are
- 18:09Speaker 1: at an end. And of Section eleven read by C. J.
