Latest / Foul Territory / Brent Rooker, Jacob Wilson @ A's Camp + Should Astros Extend Hunter Brown?
Transcript
- 0:04Speaker 1: We have sec triple crown winner here from his college state,
- 0:07Speaker 1: Mississippi State, Brent Rooker, who you know, he also signed
- 0:11Speaker 1: a nice extension last year. You know he's old news
- 0:13Speaker 1: though because of sodas from of Jacob Wilson. But he's
- 0:15Speaker 1: still got a smile on his face and don't tug. Listen.
- 0:18Speaker 1: You don't think that coaches are looking every pitch at
- 0:22Speaker 1: pitchers for tips. Listen, what does Aldo do for you guys?
- 0:24Speaker 2: He's I wasn't the doug out, but he's looking. I
- 0:26Speaker 2: think I think everybody's always looking, whether or not there's
- 0:30Speaker 2: always something to find.
- 0:31Speaker 3: Is a different thing always looking?
- 0:35Speaker 4: Did you agree with what Vinnie said? Rook?
- 0:38Speaker 5: So, Vinnie told us the other day he's like, and
- 0:40Speaker 5: obviously he's generalizing a little bit, but he's like, sometimes
- 0:43Speaker 5: you'd see a base coach not talking to his runners,
- 0:45Speaker 5: like the whole game, and he might have a different
- 0:47Speaker 5: job that day.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, maybe if there's if you know, going
- 0:51Speaker 2: to the game, there's there's something to look for, or
- 0:53Speaker 2: even a base running tip trying to steal a base.
- 0:55Speaker 2: Obviously first base coach walking in on that. But I
- 0:58Speaker 2: think for the most part, you have a good idea
- 1:01Speaker 2: going into the game, whether or not there's a.
- 1:02Speaker 3: Tip to look for it just based on video stuff.
- 1:04Speaker 3: At this point, I've.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Always want to know this DoD teams choose AI to
- 1:08Speaker 1: try to determine. I would assume anything.
- 1:11Speaker 2: Right, I mean, you got to think. So if you
- 1:13Speaker 2: line up images next to each other and it kind
- 1:15Speaker 2: of spits out what the differences and the similarities are,
- 1:16Speaker 2: I would think.
- 1:17Speaker 3: They'd be a good tool to try to utilize.
- 1:18Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 1:19Speaker 1: I was murdered that with the AI revolution that's kind
- 1:21Speaker 1: of happening all over the world. Do you think in baseball, Yeah,
- 1:23Speaker 1: a team would figure out how those are close to you.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Know, the Yeah, I would. It makes sense. I mean,
- 1:29Speaker 2: it's not much today I can't do at this point.
- 1:31Speaker 2: So I would assume you could line up videos and
- 1:33Speaker 2: I will tell you if there's something there.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Are you a big tip guy? Not when you go
- 1:38Speaker 1: out to eat.
- 1:39Speaker 2: Yes, I am when I go out to eat, But
- 1:41Speaker 2: what I am in terms I'm not good at finding them,
- 1:45Speaker 2: But like, if we got them, I want it. I'm
- 1:47Speaker 2: not like I'm not one of the guys who's like
- 1:48Speaker 2: I don't want to know what picture is coming on.
- 1:52Speaker 1: But you're one hundred percent. I was always I want
- 1:54Speaker 1: to know. If it's one hundred percent and it's early,
- 1:56Speaker 1: then yes, But if it was one of those you know,
- 1:58Speaker 1: sometimes you get guys to say, oh, I got his
- 2:00Speaker 1: pitches and it's so minuscule, and you're you're.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Staring, You're like, yeah, there's some that are tough to
- 2:05Speaker 2: and you know, and when you get in the box
- 2:06Speaker 2: with the first two pitches, whether you see it or
- 2:08Speaker 2: whether you can't see it, if it's I don't need
- 2:10Speaker 2: it to be one hundred percent, If it's like seventy
- 2:13Speaker 2: five eighty percent, I'll take my chances there. I think,
- 2:16Speaker 2: if there's an eighty percent chance I know a pitch
- 2:18Speaker 2: is coming, I'll take those odds.
- 2:20Speaker 1: And for me, it was always I'm sure Todd was
- 2:21Speaker 1: the same. For me, it was more about my takes, right.
- 2:24Speaker 1: It was like if a guy had a split, yeah,
- 2:25Speaker 1: then I just didn't want I wanted to know swing
- 2:28Speaker 1: it right? Yeah, for sure, Todd? Or am I awfu
- 2:30Speaker 1: on thinking that?
- 2:31Speaker 7: No?
- 2:32Speaker 8: Agreed, But you give me sixty percent. As I got older,
- 2:35Speaker 8: I would take sixty percent.
- 2:37Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:38Speaker 3: If hard kind of clue, I'll take it.
- 2:40Speaker 8: Yeah, dude, listen, you give me five pitches and only
- 2:43Speaker 8: two are right. Hopefully I'm hitting one of those two
- 2:46Speaker 8: and I could you know. And the main part about
- 2:48Speaker 8: it is if you say yes, you can't go back
- 2:52Speaker 8: being mad at the guy that gave you the shift.
- 2:55Speaker 7: You know what I'm saying.
- 2:55Speaker 2: Definitely give me said you gotta be well, yeah, I
- 2:58Speaker 2: mean you're not gonna get a hundred per normally, so
- 3:00Speaker 2: you gotta be okay with the one being wrong and yeah,
- 3:03Speaker 2: you know, wearing it.
- 3:05Speaker 5: Hey, you don't want to be that guy while we're
- 3:09Speaker 5: on this rook just one other because we talked about it,
- 3:11Speaker 5: I think yesterday. So now the umps are going to
- 3:14Speaker 5: be able to check on pitches between innings, not live right,
- 3:18Speaker 5: like you have your challenges that you use. But if
- 3:20Speaker 5: the yump just wants to get a feel and was like, yeah,
- 3:22Speaker 5: that was a close pitch or I want to get
- 3:24Speaker 5: a feel for how I'm looking today with this zone
- 3:27Speaker 5: with this pitcher starting, then he can check in in
- 3:30Speaker 5: between innings.
- 3:31Speaker 4: Do you like that? Yeah?
- 3:33Speaker 1: I do.
- 3:33Speaker 2: I mean it's not like that isn't that wasn't happening before?
- 3:36Speaker 2: Like umpires, Oh, ask the catcher right like when he
- 3:39Speaker 2: comes back out, like hey, you watched the video, was
- 3:40Speaker 2: it there or even? Like, if I disagree with to
- 3:42Speaker 2: strike three call, I'll be like, hey man, I'm gonna
- 3:44Speaker 2: go look at it and i'll let you know my
- 3:45Speaker 2: next about I'm gonna let him know whether it was
- 3:47Speaker 2: there or not. So it's not like they're not they
- 3:49Speaker 2: haven't been getting information. This just kind of makes it
- 3:51Speaker 2: a little bit easier for him. So I think it's
- 3:52Speaker 2: a good move for sure.
- 3:53Speaker 1: What's your rate on the ABS? Have you guys had
- 3:55Speaker 1: your ABS meeting yet?
- 3:56Speaker 2: We had our meeting this morning. We haven't. I've never
- 3:59Speaker 2: used it, so only time I've used it is when
- 4:03Speaker 2: it was like full A, BS and Triple A.
- 4:05Speaker 3: In twenty two.
- 4:05Speaker 2: So I haven't used the challenge system yet. I have
- 4:09Speaker 2: an idea of my zones, Like I'm pretty good knowing
- 4:12Speaker 2: if it's off the plate away or if it's down.
- 4:14Speaker 2: The up and the end ones are a little sketchier
- 4:16Speaker 2: for me, so I'll probably save if I do challenge,
- 4:19Speaker 2: I'll use them for pitches away and down. Knowing that
- 4:22Speaker 2: I have a normally have.
- 4:23Speaker 1: A better ideas is going to allow you to be
- 4:27Speaker 1: one of the challengers.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean we're we're full go. Everybody's allowed to
- 4:31Speaker 2: to begin. I will adjust if we need to. If
- 4:33Speaker 2: if somebody's really bad at it, they might have their
- 4:35Speaker 2: rights revoked. But going into the season he.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Challenging anymore.
- 4:42Speaker 6: I think you guys will agree.
- 4:43Speaker 1: Like if you were you discovered that you yourself.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Early bat at it, I'd be like, all right, I'm
- 4:47Speaker 2: gonna I'm gonna shut it down because I'm sick of
- 4:48Speaker 2: being wrong and getting embarrassed.
- 4:49Speaker 3: Up on the scoreboard. That's good, it's a good call.
- 4:56Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 4:57Speaker 5: I think you're also going to see some guys like
- 4:59Speaker 5: do this and some guys like do the very emphatic
- 5:02Speaker 5: because last year you couldn't do it at all. Obviously
- 5:04Speaker 5: it didn't exist last year, but we saw it a
- 5:05Speaker 5: few times and that led to an injection because we
- 5:08Speaker 5: knew that was kind of showing up the umpire. But
- 5:10Speaker 5: year anyway, all right, let's talk about camp, dude. How
- 5:13Speaker 5: does everyone look. I talked to we talked to Katte
- 5:16Speaker 5: earlier in the show, and the team has a really
- 5:20Speaker 5: nice core.
- 5:20Speaker 4: I think that's been established. There's also some guys now
- 5:23Speaker 4: that have some security and you can speak to that.
- 5:25Speaker 5: So what is that like when a player now shows
- 5:28Speaker 5: up to camp and he had a little bit of success.
- 5:30Speaker 5: Now he's got some money in there, some cash in
- 5:33Speaker 5: the pocket, and he can just go out and not
- 5:34Speaker 5: worry about anything but his game.
- 5:36Speaker 3: Yeah, it's great.
- 5:37Speaker 2: I mean I've been here for since twenty three obviously,
- 5:39Speaker 2: so I've kind of seen the full scope of my
- 5:42Speaker 2: first spring training. When you walk in and there's like
- 5:45Speaker 2: ten position player spots up for grabs. In the second year,
- 5:48Speaker 2: there's six position player spots up for grabs, and the
- 5:50Speaker 2: third year there's maybe three or four, and then you
- 5:52Speaker 2: come into camp this year and it's like, you know,
- 5:54Speaker 2: for the most part, like we know what our lineup
- 5:56Speaker 2: looks like, we know what our position player corps looks like.
- 5:58Speaker 2: We know who's going to play wherever, you know who's
- 5:59Speaker 2: going to hit where. And when you couple that, like
- 6:02Speaker 2: you said, with the financial security did some guys have,
- 6:04Speaker 2: now it's a comfortable feeling. It's it's an exciting feeling
- 6:07Speaker 2: because you know that, uh, the extensions that have been
- 6:10Speaker 2: given out just kind of reinforce the fact that we
- 6:12Speaker 2: as players think we have the right group of guys
- 6:15Speaker 2: here to do what we want to do. And and
- 6:16Speaker 2: you know, the front office and ownership locking guys down
- 6:20Speaker 2: just kind of shows that they believe the same thing.
- 6:22Speaker 2: So it shows that, you know, we're all on the
- 6:23Speaker 2: same page. We all believe the same things in terms
- 6:25Speaker 2: of the direction we're headed and the things we can
- 6:27Speaker 2: accomplish with the group that we have, and it's a
- 6:29Speaker 2: it's a good feeling.
- 6:30Speaker 3: You're on camp right now.
- 6:31Speaker 1: Talk about the new guys.
- 6:32Speaker 3: Jeff McNeil, Jeff's great man.
- 6:34Speaker 2: He's gonna that's such a boost to our lineup in
- 6:37Speaker 2: terms of depth and length and a guy who can
- 6:40Speaker 2: play really good defense all over the diamond. The guys
- 6:43Speaker 2: want a batting title, a guy who's played deep in
- 6:45Speaker 2: the playoffs, guy who's kind of done at all. So
- 6:48Speaker 2: he adds experience, He adds another hitter similar to Jacob Wilson,
- 6:52Speaker 2: and that you're not going to strike him out, which
- 6:53Speaker 2: is which is huge, you know, kind of being surrounded
- 6:56Speaker 2: by all the power that we had with other guys. So,
- 6:58Speaker 2: I mean, Jeff's a massive edition. I think he's gonna
- 7:00Speaker 2: he's gonna.
- 7:02Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:02Speaker 2: Bullpen guys Mark Savali, Scott are gonna be you know,
- 7:07Speaker 2: add a lot of experience down there too. So we're
- 7:10Speaker 2: looking forward to seeing what they can do as well.
- 7:12Speaker 3: Guys have had. Success is always a good thing.
- 7:15Speaker 2: I have a few off of Scott, not this, not
- 7:20Speaker 2: in camp. No, I haven't seen him in camp. I've
- 7:22Speaker 2: seen Savali and I've seen Barlow in games in the past.
- 7:24Speaker 2: I don't think I've seen Mark, but I have not
- 7:27Speaker 2: seen him in camp yet. No, you need some some
- 7:31Speaker 2: trash dog, some first head experience. I haven't. It's been
- 7:34Speaker 2: I saw Scott last year. I think he threw me
- 7:37Speaker 2: a first pitch sinker and I had jammed it in
- 7:38Speaker 2: the right field for a single. But that was I
- 7:41Speaker 2: think that was the last time I faced one of
- 7:43Speaker 2: our new guys in a game or in any kind
- 7:45Speaker 2: of live situation.
- 7:47Speaker 8: So there's been a lot going on, you know, a
- 7:49Speaker 8: new UH player association guy and Bruce Meyer. There have
- 7:53Speaker 8: been a lot of talks about him coming up and
- 7:55Speaker 8: now he's finally getting his time. A little bit unfortunate
- 7:58Speaker 8: circumstances that went on. But Chris Bassett a guy and
- 8:02Speaker 8: next guy. He talked a little bit about salary cap
- 8:04Speaker 8: and I don't know if you saw his comments, but
- 8:06Speaker 8: I don't know if you know, would you like to
- 8:08Speaker 8: elaborate on what you think too about salary cap and
- 8:11Speaker 8: everything else of what MLB is trying to implement here
- 8:13Speaker 8: in the next upcoming year.
- 8:15Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, salary caps are designed to suppress wages
- 8:19Speaker 2: so olds can make more money. And that's pretty much it.
- 8:20Speaker 2: That's the only goal behind them. They're not trying to
- 8:22Speaker 2: accomplish anything else besides that. So that's not good for players,
- 8:25Speaker 2: that's not good for the league, that's not good for
- 8:27Speaker 2: competitive ballance or parody. So we're you know, we're not
- 8:31Speaker 2: going to tolerate that being implemented into our game.
- 8:34Speaker 1: That was like the best answer ever of just I
- 8:37Speaker 1: just this is it. This is what I feeling. You
- 8:39Speaker 1: major feelings know on Twitter, which I actually love. I
- 8:42Speaker 1: think I'm happy I didn't have Twitter because I was
- 8:44Speaker 1: gotten too many fights with people. But you handle this
- 8:46Speaker 1: so professionally when people come at you, you're really good at.
- 8:49Speaker 2: I try to have fun with it, you know. At
- 8:50Speaker 2: the interactions are always I mean, some are more hostile
- 8:53Speaker 2: than others, but if you can handle them in a
- 8:56Speaker 2: respectful way, that also kind of lets people know that
- 9:00Speaker 2: puts them in their place at times.
- 9:01Speaker 3: I think it's it's a.
- 9:02Speaker 1: Good boat place in the world. And if you can,
- 9:05Speaker 1: like you said, laugh at it. Yeah, it's gotta be
- 9:07Speaker 1: the most place just because everyone has a voice people
- 9:10Speaker 1: that shouldn't have a voice. Yeah, no one ever comes
- 9:12Speaker 1: on there and be like, rook Man, you're awesome. Thanks,
- 9:15Speaker 1: thanks for saying that when you suck you got that
- 9:17Speaker 1: game this, and that it's like non stop all year long.
- 9:21Speaker 5: What hey, Well, while we're on that, I want to
- 9:24Speaker 5: bring up the latest tweet. So it was from about
- 9:27Speaker 5: a week ago, you know it, and I know you
- 9:29Speaker 5: said that you were done thinking about it on Twitter,
- 9:32Speaker 5: but we haven't gotten your verbal response to it. And
- 9:34Speaker 5: it was fun, right, someone was talking with using comps
- 9:37Speaker 5: with you, and and Judge and O'tani.
- 9:39Speaker 4: You were all over there too, right.
- 9:41Speaker 5: I think the tweet started at Otani is a closer
- 9:43Speaker 5: hitter to Rooker than he is, judged by way it
- 9:45Speaker 5: runs graded plus over the past two seasons. And then
- 9:47Speaker 5: you said, if anyone needs me, I'll be spending the
- 9:49Speaker 5: next four to six hours trying to decide if this
- 9:51Speaker 5: is a compliment or an insult.
- 9:53Speaker 4: I liked that.
- 9:55Speaker 2: Yeah, it was good. I mean I and I appreciate
- 9:57Speaker 2: when I tweet things like that and people like jump
- 9:59Speaker 2: in trying to explain to me, like what the guy
- 10:02Speaker 2: was trying to do, and I was like, look, I.
- 10:03Speaker 3: Understand what he was trying to do.
- 10:05Speaker 2: I didn't need the actual explanation that I was just
- 10:06Speaker 2: making the fun, lighthearted joke. I didn't need you actually
- 10:09Speaker 2: explaining to me the reference in comparison he was trying to.
- 10:11Speaker 3: Make you guys. But I do appreciate it.
- 10:13Speaker 2: But yeah, I mean I walk away from it being like,
- 10:16Speaker 2: those are two not bad guys to be in the
- 10:18Speaker 2: same sentence with when it comes offensive production.
- 10:20Speaker 3: So I'll take the compliment. Thank you.
- 10:22Speaker 1: Look at here's the compliment.
- 10:23Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure, I've done enough to be thrown in
- 10:26Speaker 2: the conversation, thrown in the same sentence, the same tweet
- 10:28Speaker 2: as those two guys who were clearly the best in
- 10:30Speaker 2: the world.
- 10:30Speaker 3: So I'll take it absolutely.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Speaking of one of the guys's best in the world,
- 10:33Speaker 1: Mark McGuire, has he been here yet?
- 10:35Speaker 2: I have not seen Mark yet this year. He was
- 10:36Speaker 2: around last year, and he was aroun during the season
- 10:38Speaker 2: some too, but I have not seen.
- 10:40Speaker 3: Him yet this year.
- 10:40Speaker 1: Have you had conversations with him?
- 10:41Speaker 2: I have.
- 10:42Speaker 3: I have picked his brain.
- 10:44Speaker 2: He's a very fun guy, very generous with his time,
- 10:48Speaker 2: very generous with his wisdom, So he's always fun to
- 10:50Speaker 2: have around, looking forward to see.
- 10:51Speaker 1: He got you to try this little waggle that he
- 10:53Speaker 1: had when he played.
- 10:53Speaker 2: He hasn't, but I'm I'm all forward if he thinks
- 10:56Speaker 2: that he'll do something, and he also like a huge
- 10:58Speaker 2: he swung a huge babbitt looks so little.
- 11:01Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, it looks.
- 11:02Speaker 2: I mean, the waggle makes it even look kind of
- 11:04Speaker 2: smaller because it's just like he's using all wrists and
- 11:06Speaker 2: forums up there and hitting it for nine miles.
- 11:08Speaker 3: So I don't have that. I can't do that.
- 11:09Speaker 2: But any advice Marks willing to give me, I'm gonna.
- 11:12Speaker 2: I'm gonna listen to.
- 11:13Speaker 1: Will you watch the WBC for sure?
- 11:16Speaker 3: Yeah, you'll be written for your guys. Absolutely.
- 11:19Speaker 1: You have guys on Brazil, you have guys on Dominican.
- 11:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I'll be cheering for individual success of my guys
- 11:24Speaker 2: while cheering for the team.
- 11:26Speaker 3: Success of USA. Obviously.
- 11:28Speaker 1: Okay, what happens if it comes down to Dominican and
- 11:31Speaker 1: Seve has to pitch in the USA, Let's say in
- 11:33Speaker 1: the finals, then what do you do?
- 11:37Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 11:37Speaker 2: I hope Sevy goes like six and two thirds shutty,
- 11:40Speaker 2: and then we went late. So I got a cheer
- 11:42Speaker 2: for my guys, but I got a cheer for obviously
- 11:45Speaker 2: America's guys to win.
- 11:47Speaker 5: Nice Hey on Sevy real quick, cause I asked Kante
- 11:51Speaker 5: this question too. I mean, I'm trying to do math
- 11:54Speaker 5: of yeah, take out May. I know you can't do that,
- 11:56Speaker 5: but like, let's say you have a normal May as
- 11:58Speaker 5: a team, and then you're in the mix for a
- 12:00Speaker 5: wild card spot. The other factor for me is that
- 12:02Speaker 5: Luis Savorino is a really good pitcher. It's a veteran,
- 12:05Speaker 5: he's been there, he knows what he's doing. If you
- 12:07Speaker 5: get even close to those road numbers at home, you're
- 12:10Speaker 5: gonna win a lot more games. So I know it's
- 12:12Speaker 5: not your job, but how does that happen?
- 12:16Speaker 2: I mean, I think Sevy coming into this year is
- 12:18Speaker 2: going to be much more comfortable in the situation. He's
- 12:21Speaker 2: going to know what to expect. He's going to have
- 12:23Speaker 2: less adjustments to make obviously in terms of his routine,
- 12:26Speaker 2: whether it's pre game, during the game, whatever. So I
- 12:28Speaker 2: think he's more comfortable and more settled in than I
- 12:30Speaker 2: expect him. I mean, he's looked really, really good in
- 12:32Speaker 2: his lives so far from what I've heard so I
- 12:35Speaker 2: expect him to go out and be at the caliber
- 12:37Speaker 2: pitcher that he can be and lead his pitching staff
- 12:39Speaker 2: in the way that he's very capable of.
- 12:40Speaker 3: So I'm excited to watch him.
- 12:43Speaker 8: I know Aj asked this question to Katie, but I'm
- 12:46Speaker 8: going to ask you too. I think it puts a
- 12:47Speaker 8: lot in perspective. Once you're in spring training on you've
- 12:50Speaker 8: seen everybody. Is there a youngster right now hit or
- 12:53Speaker 8: wise that You're like, oh, okay, I could see this
- 12:56Speaker 8: guy coming to help this squad, maybe this year, maybe
- 12:58Speaker 8: next year, maybe in a couple years that are just like.
- 13:00Speaker 7: Boom, batting practice looks real good. The guy brings it.
- 13:04Speaker 8: Is there anybody you know on the top top of
- 13:06Speaker 8: your tongue right now that you can say.
- 13:08Speaker 2: Kurts doesn't count. We already established the Kurts is good.
- 13:11Speaker 2: We can move on from ose. I like Henry Bolty,
- 13:15Speaker 2: a lot man, big outfield. They're really athletic, a lot
- 13:18Speaker 2: of tools, can go get it, can fly, a lot
- 13:21Speaker 2: of power. Still really really young. Put up some numbers,
- 13:24Speaker 2: good numbers in the in the minor leagues last year.
- 13:26Speaker 2: So I think he's the guy who's going to develop
- 13:28Speaker 2: and into a really good player in the next few years.
- 13:30Speaker 1: Before we let you go. I saw you came in
- 13:32Speaker 1: all snazzed up in your uniform. You walked past me,
- 13:35Speaker 1: didn't talk to me. It's fine, I get it, you're
- 13:36Speaker 1: going your green shirt.
- 13:37Speaker 2: I was probably in a bad moved. It was like
- 13:39Speaker 2: six forty five and I was having to go take pictures.
- 13:40Speaker 1: So that's fine, but I cannot. I don't even know
- 13:42Speaker 1: if I'm probably gonna get in trouble for asking you this.
- 13:44Speaker 1: But I saw your gold uniforms and they say Sacramento
- 13:48Speaker 1: on the front, and I was like, wait, whoa, they
- 13:51Speaker 1: look good. Yeah, we had gold.
- 13:53Speaker 6: We had the gold last.
- 13:53Speaker 1: Year that they didn't right, So when I saw.
- 13:58Speaker 2: I just got it, you know, a not of appreciation
- 14:00Speaker 2: of Sacramento. Obviously, they took us in for the three years,
- 14:03Speaker 2: knowing it was temporary, uh, knowing that we were going
- 14:05Speaker 2: to move on. But the city and the community has
- 14:08Speaker 2: been incredibly gracious and generous to us. So I think
- 14:11Speaker 2: we thought that we owed them kind of the not
- 14:12Speaker 2: a gratitude. No, I love to on the on the
- 14:15Speaker 2: gold jerseys. It looked awesome.
- 14:18Speaker 1: Gold Sundays.
- 14:19Speaker 2: I don't I think there is a day for.
- 14:22Speaker 3: Might be sad.
- 14:23Speaker 2: Yeah, but we all loved the gold uniforms last year,
- 14:26Speaker 2: so I think addin Sacramento is a nice touch.
- 14:28Speaker 3: Agreed, Really cool.
- 14:30Speaker 5: Hey, great to see you. Appreciate the time. As always,
- 14:32Speaker 5: we love hearing from you, so do fanaly thing. Man.
- 14:35Speaker 4: We'll catch up soon.
- 14:36Speaker 6: Thank you, I appreciate it.
- 14:39Speaker 1: I'm here with Jacob Wilson, the man fresh contract shortstop
- 14:42Speaker 1: here for the Sacramento Athletics. I mean, look, he's got
- 14:45Speaker 1: that smile. If I've just signed that contract, i'd have
- 14:47Speaker 1: that nice job. But I don't know if you played
- 14:49Speaker 1: against his father, but I played against his father. I'm
- 14:51Speaker 1: kind of mad at this kid because his dad took
- 14:53Speaker 1: a lot of hits away from me over the years. Man,
- 14:55Speaker 1: playing shortstop, it was it was mad and one and
- 14:57Speaker 1: we're gonna get into I'm gonna tell you a story
- 14:58Speaker 1: at the end about your dad and you. He probably
- 15:00Speaker 1: still brags him out to this day, but he took
- 15:02Speaker 1: too many hits away for me to be nice to you.
- 15:06Speaker 6: That's awesome.
- 15:10Speaker 7: That's my dog. Yeah, exactly did you hit it out?
- 15:16Speaker 4: I know were popular on this show.
- 15:18Speaker 5: Yeah, it's kind of weird, but anyway, Hey, talk about them.
- 15:24Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, it was.
- 15:25Speaker 6: It was awesome, you know, it was it was a
- 15:27Speaker 6: long process. You know, it took a long time going
- 15:29Speaker 6: back and forth, and uh, you know, kind of towards
- 15:31Speaker 6: the end, it made an easy decision knowing that you know,
- 15:33Speaker 6: I get to be a part of the squad. You know,
- 15:34Speaker 6: I got a lot of my boys here who are
- 15:36Speaker 6: pretty much my best friends. I hang out with every day,
- 15:38Speaker 6: you know, go to the field with them every day.
- 15:39Speaker 6: You know, you love playing the game with them, and uh,
- 15:41Speaker 6: you know it was everything for me. You would be
- 15:43Speaker 6: able to stay here for you know, this team took
- 15:44Speaker 6: a chance on the other draft and draft me early,
- 15:46Speaker 6: and you know, super blessed to be the part of
- 15:49Speaker 6: part of this organization.
- 15:50Speaker 3: And I love it.
- 15:50Speaker 6: And you know, at the end of the day, I
- 15:52Speaker 6: think that was the main reason why I wanted to
- 15:54Speaker 6: I wanted to stay and be here forranxtent period of time.
- 15:58Speaker 8: Talk a little bit about your routine and you know,
- 16:00Speaker 8: now you got the extension. Is there anything different that
- 16:02Speaker 8: you're doing spring training coming into here and now you
- 16:05Speaker 8: know you can relax a little bit, but talk about
- 16:08Speaker 8: your focal point and what you're trying to work on
- 16:10Speaker 8: this spring training.
- 16:12Speaker 6: Yeah, I think more. For me, it was growing into
- 16:14Speaker 6: my body more, putting on some more weight, some more
- 16:16Speaker 6: muscle mass, and uh really, you know, offensively is always
- 16:20Speaker 6: kind of in the same routine ever since I was
- 16:21Speaker 6: a kid. You know, it's always in the same same thoughts,
- 16:24Speaker 6: same ideas, just going out there and just being able
- 16:25Speaker 6: to you know, get back in the swing of things.
- 16:27Speaker 6: In spring training, you know, that's kind of just getting
- 16:29Speaker 6: getting that stuff out of the way, you know, learning
- 16:31Speaker 6: being able to you know, get back into you know,
- 16:32Speaker 6: making adjustments and defensively, it's been a lot of working
- 16:35Speaker 6: on the first step, you know, trying to get more
- 16:36Speaker 6: range out of out of you know, being at shortstop
- 16:38Speaker 6: and getting more balls, making more plays. It's kind of
- 16:40Speaker 6: the main thing going and talking to Bobby Crosby, just
- 16:42Speaker 6: really working on that this year. And you know, I'm
- 16:44Speaker 6: sure once the game starts going to get a lot
- 16:46Speaker 6: more a lot more work going going in the spring,
- 16:48Speaker 6: and you know, I'm just excited, excited to be back,
- 16:50Speaker 6: you know, miss being on the field, like I said,
- 16:52Speaker 6: with these guys, and you know, I just love it.
- 16:54Speaker 7: Yeah, And I want to pinpoint something are there?
- 16:56Speaker 6: Are you?
- 16:57Speaker 8: Are you kind of old school like your dad? You know,
- 16:59Speaker 8: just get out there, feel, get the ends going. Are
- 17:01Speaker 8: you looking at computers all ai or is there a
- 17:04Speaker 8: lot of stuff that were you analytics? Like, talk to
- 17:06Speaker 8: me about the person you are, because I always the guys. Oh,
- 17:09Speaker 8: let's just stretch real quick, get on the field, let
- 17:11Speaker 8: me see how the field's bouncing, and let me let
- 17:13Speaker 8: me get my work done.
- 17:15Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 17:15Speaker 6: I think throughout my you know, year and a half
- 17:18Speaker 6: in the day leagues and you know year in the
- 17:19Speaker 6: minor leagues, I never looked at one computer. You know,
- 17:22Speaker 6: for me, it's going out there, getting the hands warm,
- 17:24Speaker 6: seeing the field. Very old school, you know. The analytics
- 17:27Speaker 6: team comes and tries to talk to me, and I
- 17:28Speaker 6: understand another terminology at all, and I'm just like, all right,
- 17:31Speaker 6: what does it mean? What does this mean? All right,
- 17:33Speaker 6: we'll work on that. And uh, you know, I think
- 17:35Speaker 6: it's more their job to tell me, like what to
- 17:37Speaker 6: work on. And I'm like, all right, and I'll go
- 17:38Speaker 6: take on balls, work on the hands a little bit,
- 17:40Speaker 6: and try to work on some more stuff. I'm very
- 17:42Speaker 6: old school, you know.
- 17:42Speaker 3: I don't really look at computers for.
- 17:44Speaker 6: Pretty much anything besides video. I don't look at the
- 17:46Speaker 6: metrics or anything. And it's just, you know, I don't
- 17:49Speaker 6: see too much part of my game.
- 17:51Speaker 1: By the way, Todd, you hear what he said. He's
- 17:52Speaker 1: like for the almost a year I was in the
- 17:54Speaker 1: minor leagues, it was so rough on my body. And
- 17:57Speaker 1: those all those plane flights I took for a like
- 18:00Speaker 1: half a year before I before I got to the
- 18:02Speaker 1: big leagues. Who do you live with in spring trainings?
- 18:05Speaker 1: You mentioned your best friends or who are you living with?
- 18:07Speaker 6: I'm married, so I yeah, I bought I bought a
- 18:11Speaker 6: house out here. I live here full time, so I
- 18:13Speaker 6: didn't have to.
- 18:15Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 18:15Speaker 6: Yeah, I grew up in southern California, went to Grand
- 18:17Speaker 6: Canyon and loved it, and obviously, you know, got Draft
- 18:20Speaker 6: of year spring trainings here, so made this isn't easier
- 18:22Speaker 6: to move out here and you live here during an
- 18:23Speaker 6: off season.
- 18:24Speaker 1: Are we gonna have Jacob Wilson field over at Grand Canyon?
- 18:27Speaker 6: Well maybe one day, Well maybe one day. They got
- 18:29Speaker 6: the Tim Salmon club boss over there. Okay, walk by
- 18:31Speaker 6: there every time, so yeah.
- 18:32Speaker 1: Well Tim Salmon go there?
- 18:34Speaker 2: He did?
- 18:34Speaker 6: He didn't really go there.
- 18:35Speaker 1: Yeah, I did not know. Yeah that was before Grand
- 18:38Speaker 1: Canyon was even like a thing.
- 18:39Speaker 6: Yeah, I think there were Division two or Division three
- 18:42Speaker 6: when he went really yeah, back when he was in
- 18:44Speaker 6: college and then obviously the transition over.
- 18:46Speaker 1: But you're just gonna dunk on him when you're like
- 18:48Speaker 1: Jacob Wilson Field at Tim Salmon Club.
- 18:51Speaker 6: Yeah he's he's awesome.
- 18:52Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, he is.
- 18:53Speaker 6: He's a great, great guy.
- 18:55Speaker 5: Hey, a j real quick, because you guys were making
- 18:58Speaker 5: fun of how he spent eight minut and it's in
- 19:00Speaker 5: the minor leagues, you know, so he got called up.
- 19:02Speaker 5: His debut was twenty twenty four, I think in July.
- 19:05Speaker 5: Do you know what he was hitting in two hundred
- 19:07Speaker 5: played appearances? If I have this right in the minor leagues,
- 19:10Speaker 5: and then it'll make it a little easier to understand.
- 19:12Speaker 4: Do you guys want me to give you the number.
- 19:14Speaker 1: Like three eighty something, wasn't it.
- 19:16Speaker 4: Four to thirty eight?
- 19:17Speaker 3: Do I have that right?
- 19:19Speaker 1: Way off?
- 19:19Speaker 4: Four thirty eight?
- 19:21Speaker 5: You know what you say when you see four thirty
- 19:23Speaker 5: eight and two hundred played appearances, I think it's time.
- 19:26Speaker 4: I think I think he needs to.
- 19:28Speaker 5: Go to another level because if someone was hitting four
- 19:30Speaker 5: thirty eight in the bigs, they'd have to find another
- 19:32Speaker 5: level too, So it was time, right jab, Yeah, you
- 19:35Speaker 5: could say now you've dirting your spikes or signed up
- 19:38Speaker 5: long term, right like I don't. Obviously, the game is
- 19:40Speaker 5: it's the most difficult thing in sports is to hit
- 19:42Speaker 5: a baseball like that.
- 19:43Speaker 4: But you clearly were feeling it at that moment.
- 19:46Speaker 5: Right in twenty twenty four, you're getting to hit almost
- 19:48Speaker 5: every other at bat.
- 19:50Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, that the double a part triple a year was.
- 19:53Speaker 6: It was awesome. I don't a lot to get hitting coaches
- 19:55Speaker 6: too that I was talking to kind of first full
- 19:57Speaker 6: season in freessimal baseball. A lot of guys I got
- 19:59Speaker 6: to talk to. You know, I lead on my dad
- 20:01Speaker 6: a lot too. You know, he's he kind of knows
- 20:02Speaker 6: my swinging the best that anybody has seen it the most.
- 20:04Speaker 6: So get to call him and he's easy houtel for me.
- 20:07Speaker 6: So it's awesome to be able to have those guys
- 20:08Speaker 6: in my corner.
- 20:09Speaker 1: What's your dad? What does your dad talk to you?
- 20:10Speaker 1: Because your dad was known more for his glove obviously
- 20:12Speaker 1: than hitting, What does your dad talk to you about hitting?
- 20:15Speaker 1: Because he was he was a similar hitter to you.
- 20:17Speaker 1: He didn't have the power that you had, but he
- 20:19Speaker 1: didn't strike out a lot. He put the ball in place.
- 20:21Speaker 1: Swam right. You only had thirty nine strikeouts last year,
- 20:24Speaker 1: which in today's day and age is like zero strikeouts.
- 20:27Speaker 1: So what does your dad.
- 20:28Speaker 3: Talk to you about?
- 20:29Speaker 6: Yeah, I think he teaches me a lot of stuff
- 20:31Speaker 6: that he'd learned from other guys, you know, when he
- 20:33Speaker 6: played a lot of guys that he talked to, and
- 20:36Speaker 6: really just simplifying anything everything, you know, just making it
- 20:38Speaker 6: down and like I have a lot of movement in
- 20:40Speaker 6: my swing, but once I kind of get to my load,
- 20:42Speaker 6: there's not really much, you know, keep trying to keep
- 20:44Speaker 6: the head still, you know, don't drift forward, all that stuff.
- 20:46Speaker 6: Just calling him Like, like I said, he can see
- 20:48Speaker 6: my swing at any point and know exactly what to
- 20:52Speaker 6: call me and talk to me about. And then I
- 20:53Speaker 6: can just go on the cage and be like all right,
- 20:55Speaker 6: that was it, and you know, it's awesome. You'll be
- 20:57Speaker 6: able to have him just tell me pretty much every day,
- 20:59Speaker 6: Hey I saw this, I work on this to morrow
- 21:00Speaker 6: and it ends up you know, working So he's he's awesome.
- 21:03Speaker 3: He's great. That is great.
- 21:05Speaker 8: And I know you had your dad to look up to,
- 21:07Speaker 8: but was there anybody else as a youngster where you
- 21:09Speaker 8: just would flock to every time you went to the ballpark,
- 21:13Speaker 8: or somebody you looked up to who gave you some
- 21:14Speaker 8: good advice.
- 21:15Speaker 7: Like one or the other, or you could tell me
- 21:17Speaker 7: about both.
- 21:18Speaker 6: Yeah. So growing up, there was a lot of my dad,
- 21:20Speaker 6: you know, it was he was just dad. I went
- 21:22Speaker 6: to the baseball field pretty much every day, and uh,
- 21:24Speaker 6: you know the guy. Once he retired and I started
- 21:26Speaker 6: getting into like high school and like looking at college
- 21:28Speaker 6: and stuff. A guy that I loved watching back at
- 21:31Speaker 6: Vanderbilt was Dancy Swanson. That was a guy that I
- 21:33Speaker 6: I looked up to, you know, as a high school
- 21:35Speaker 6: kid coming up. I wanted to go to Vanderbilt just
- 21:37Speaker 6: because of him. You know, he was the guy that
- 21:38Speaker 6: I like watching a lot. He was a shortstop. I
- 21:40Speaker 6: wanted to be a college shortstop, and uh, you know
- 21:42Speaker 6: he he was awesome. And I got to talk to
- 21:44Speaker 6: him up for the first time when I got called up,
- 21:45Speaker 6: and you know, he's great. He's something that I got
- 21:47Speaker 6: to actually tour the Cubs place back in college when
- 21:49Speaker 6: I was taking the tours before the draft, and uh
- 21:52Speaker 6: got to talk to him and it was awesome to
- 21:53Speaker 6: be able to talk to me. He was the guy
- 21:54Speaker 6: that I really really like I looked up to, you know,
- 21:56Speaker 6: in high school and college.
- 21:57Speaker 1: Todd, Todd. It's hilarious, right we're talking to Jacob Wilson
- 22:01Speaker 1: when you're talking to guys in the big leagues now
- 22:04Speaker 1: with long term extensions that you played against their father.
- 22:07Speaker 1: And then he's like, I looked up to Danzby Swonson,
- 22:09Speaker 1: and I played with dan Zy Swanson when he made
- 22:12Speaker 1: his debut. You're like, gosh, man, I'm starting to feel
- 22:14Speaker 1: old now.
- 22:14Speaker 7: It looks like each other too. They got a similarity in.
- 22:17Speaker 1: My I know they do. They got a little I
- 22:19Speaker 1: grew up.
- 22:20Speaker 6: I grew up the hair because then we'll hair.
- 22:21Speaker 3: I lie.
- 22:21Speaker 6: I saw the hair and I grew it out.
- 22:24Speaker 7: I like that, Scott. You don't see many people growing
- 22:28Speaker 7: their hair like you.
- 22:28Speaker 3: Though, me, what.
- 22:35Speaker 6: The wait?
- 22:36Speaker 4: I want to know, Hey, do you know Jacob just
- 22:39Speaker 4: because you have it right now?
- 22:40Speaker 5: Aj and Kratz get a lot of crap for wearing
- 22:43Speaker 5: backwards hats like it's not allowed, and obviously as friends
- 22:47Speaker 5: with Ken Griffy Junr, so I always do the easy
- 22:49Speaker 5: reply of okay, no, no, I always do the the
- 22:53Speaker 5: reply of okay when they're like, oh, players shouldn't wear
- 22:57Speaker 5: backwards hats.
- 22:57Speaker 4: I'm like, cool, I'll let Griffy know. AJ will griff
- 23:00Speaker 4: you know.
- 23:00Speaker 5: So can you let the world know that it's okay
- 23:03Speaker 5: sometimes to wear a backwards hat.
- 23:05Speaker 6: I usually turn around once the day is done on
- 23:07Speaker 6: the field, it stays forward. I can't turn around all
- 23:09Speaker 6: It's yeah, that's fun. That's like an unwritten rule for me.
- 23:12Speaker 6: But like once I get to the clubhouse, I turn
- 23:14Speaker 6: around trying to, you know, just just hang out. That's
- 23:17Speaker 6: like a kind of hangout hat.
- 23:19Speaker 1: What what's your thing you're working on the spring? What
- 23:20Speaker 1: what did you go into the off season with and Zerio?
- 23:22Speaker 1: I need to improve X y Z to become the
- 23:25Speaker 1: next step of Jacob Wilson.
- 23:27Speaker 6: Yeah, it was a lot of the growing in the body.
- 23:29Speaker 6: That was kind of the main thing really going in
- 23:31Speaker 6: the spring because it's easy since I live here, I
- 23:34Speaker 6: get to come work out with the strength coaches at
- 23:35Speaker 6: the facility pretty much. Yeah, whenever, whenever I'm available, they're available,
- 23:40Speaker 6: and they're great. You know, they helped me out a lot.
- 23:41Speaker 6: They know exactly what I need to do to get
- 23:43Speaker 6: my body to where I want it to be. And
- 23:45Speaker 6: I think I'm up probably I think nine to ten
- 23:47Speaker 6: pounds right now since that last day of the season
- 23:49Speaker 6: last year. So it was a lot of that, a
- 23:51Speaker 6: lot of work, you know, footwork stuff. I guess I
- 23:54Speaker 6: working on the first step, you know, being able to
- 23:55Speaker 6: get more range as a shortstop, and you know, offense,
- 23:59Speaker 6: I guess it's always been the same exec team. I
- 24:01Speaker 6: haven't changed it. You know, there's adjustments that I make,
- 24:03Speaker 6: you know, depending on how the season's going and who
- 24:05Speaker 6: I'm facing, but uh, overall, it's majority of the same
- 24:07Speaker 6: same exect team.
- 24:08Speaker 1: Are you and Kurts? Are you mad at Kurts for
- 24:10Speaker 1: taking your Rookie of the year like you did? You
- 24:13Speaker 1: talk track like I had this thing locked up, Nick
- 24:15Speaker 1: and then all of a sudden you came up and
- 24:17Speaker 1: just stole.
- 24:17Speaker 3: It from me.
- 24:18Speaker 6: Yeah, it's kind of hard to compete with what thirty
- 24:20Speaker 6: six homers. It's not easy to be able to compete
- 24:24Speaker 6: with that, But you know it was awesome. I think,
- 24:26Speaker 6: you know, when he got called up, I remember calling
- 24:28Speaker 6: my dad like, dude, this thing's gone.
- 24:30Speaker 2: I knew in spring training.
- 24:32Speaker 6: I was like, dude, this guy is gonna be this
- 24:33Speaker 6: guy's going to be electric once he once he gets
- 24:35Speaker 6: up and gets going, And uh, I think halfway probably
- 24:38Speaker 6: around the All Star break, you know, we were talking about, like,
- 24:40Speaker 6: all right, as long as this we get this thing
- 24:42Speaker 6: in this clubhouse, like because at that time we were
- 24:45Speaker 6: both like towards the top of like guys who were
- 24:47Speaker 6: in the kind of the running for it, and like,
- 24:49Speaker 6: as long as we get this thing in this clubouse,
- 24:51Speaker 6: we're gonna we're gonna be all right, get it back
- 24:52Speaker 6: to the organization. So it was awesome just be able to,
- 24:55Speaker 6: you know, compete with him and just being able to
- 24:57Speaker 6: enjoy that entire year and just build off each other's success.
- 25:00Speaker 6: This was pretty often for us going into this year.
- 25:01Speaker 1: Do me a favor? Can you go like this with
- 25:03Speaker 1: your left hand? Can anyone? Can everyone?
- 25:06Speaker 2: Can we?
- 25:07Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 25:07Speaker 1: Do you see that this right here? No, go back
- 25:09Speaker 1: to the single. Do we see that right there? Do
- 25:12Speaker 1: you guys know what doubt is? Where that located? What's
- 25:14Speaker 1: located right underneath that. We used to call them turty's
- 25:17Speaker 1: because it looks like you have a thirty little piece
- 25:19Speaker 1: of turd underneath your end, right your handmade bone is,
- 25:23Speaker 1: And that's where that's what causes the handmade bone, yeah,
- 25:27Speaker 1: is because that's on the knob and you get it
- 25:29Speaker 1: it's always in spring, you get it and it really
- 25:31Speaker 1: never goes away.
- 25:32Speaker 3: No, it never does.
- 25:32Speaker 6: I have a choke up guy too, so I don't.
- 25:34Speaker 6: I'm nearly on the knob in general. Try to keep it,
- 25:38Speaker 6: Try to keep me to keep it.
- 25:39Speaker 1: Yeah, you got to keep rough, right, that's crazy because
- 25:42Speaker 1: everyone's like, I don't understand these handma, Why why don't
- 25:44Speaker 1: you get off the knob. Well, guys always since the
- 25:47Speaker 1: beginning of time have had that that thing on their
- 25:50Speaker 1: hand and it never goes away.
- 25:51Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, it's hard and it's even all off. He's
- 25:54Speaker 6: still there. That's right, bag more in spring.
- 25:57Speaker 5: This is someone on some show the other day was saying, now,
- 26:00Speaker 5: like some of the knobs are changing, so that's what's
- 26:02Speaker 5: causing And I'm like, I don't know. I think we
- 26:04Speaker 5: just hit a coincidence where three guys went down at
- 26:06Speaker 5: the same time. You might not have many of those
- 26:08Speaker 5: the rest of the spring or the rest of the season.
- 26:10Speaker 5: We just happened to hit three in a row, right there,
- 26:12Speaker 5: you saw them, Yeah, right, Carol.
- 26:16Speaker 4: We talked to last night about.
- 26:17Speaker 1: It a jst on I I got my there. You
- 26:25Speaker 1: can't you can't plan for it. It just happens. But
- 26:27Speaker 1: the one thing try to keep it in shape like that.
- 26:30Speaker 4: Yeah, Jacob, I have one more for you.
- 26:33Speaker 5: So we're in a sport now where it is so
- 26:36Speaker 5: number based on evaluation, right, And and I'm not like
- 26:39Speaker 5: an old school Oh I don't incorporate advanced numbers. I
- 26:42Speaker 5: actually try and mix it into the show as much
- 26:43Speaker 5: as possible. My question for you is more for young kids,
- 26:46Speaker 5: because we do have a lot of youngsters that listen
- 26:48Speaker 5: to the show, and I feel like we're at a
- 26:50Speaker 5: point where sometimes someone will be like, oh, my bat
- 26:52Speaker 5: speed has to get to this level. You're the perfect
- 26:54Speaker 5: example of oh, my exit velocity has to get to
- 26:56Speaker 5: this level.
- 26:57Speaker 4: Oh does it?
- 26:57Speaker 5: Because Jacob Wilson can hit three hundred and the big
- 27:00Speaker 5: leagues and four thirty eight in the minor leagues and
- 27:02Speaker 5: then make seventy million dollars on a contract.
- 27:04Speaker 4: So did you experience any of that?
- 27:06Speaker 5: And then for anyone that's, you know, being told, hey,
- 27:09Speaker 5: you're not hitting the ball hard enough, what would your
- 27:10Speaker 5: advice be?
- 27:12Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 27:13Speaker 6: Uh, you know, for me in that department, I think
- 27:16Speaker 6: I'm the bottom one percent of major Baseball in both
- 27:18Speaker 6: of those categories. But you know, it's it's tough because
- 27:22Speaker 6: you know, there's you know, back when I was in
- 27:23Speaker 6: college that it was a big thing. Exit Velossit wasn't
- 27:26Speaker 6: a was wasn't great. And I think for me just
- 27:29Speaker 6: being able to defend that is that when you put
- 27:31Speaker 6: the ball in play with two strikes a lot, you
- 27:32Speaker 6: have so many numbers that you know, guys who you
- 27:35Speaker 6: know strike out, that's not a zero mile for our
- 27:37Speaker 6: exit velo. So it doesn't affect it as much versus
- 27:40Speaker 6: like guys who go up there put the ball in play,
- 27:41Speaker 6: Like every guy in this game who's not a strikeout
- 27:43Speaker 6: guy has low exit velossies because they put the ball
- 27:45Speaker 6: you know, in play a lot and sometimes in soft contact.
- 27:48Speaker 6: Sometimes that's all you really need to you know, get
- 27:50Speaker 6: a guy over, you know, find a way on base.
- 27:52Speaker 6: So that's uh. I've never you know, guys have came
- 27:54Speaker 6: up and talked to me about it, you know obviously,
- 27:56Speaker 6: like you know, analytics guys are like, oh, it's you know,
- 27:58Speaker 6: it's slower than everybody else. But yeah, it's not, like
- 28:00Speaker 6: I said, I'm a multipole guy. I never really dig
- 28:02Speaker 6: too much into it, you know, I just go out
- 28:04Speaker 6: there and try to just to be the same player.
- 28:06Speaker 6: You know, every day and not really try to change
- 28:07Speaker 6: a much. Just stay in my lane. And uh you
- 28:09Speaker 6: know that's I think that's what that team needs me
- 28:11Speaker 6: to do, is take a ball and play, move guys over,
- 28:13Speaker 6: find a way to go on base, because you know,
- 28:14Speaker 6: like this lineup, you got Nick, you got Rooker, you
- 28:16Speaker 6: got Langeleiers, you have all these guys who hit a
- 28:19Speaker 6: lot of homers. You know, we have multiple thirty homer
- 28:21Speaker 6: guys every single year. So if I get on base
- 28:23Speaker 6: and they had a homer, it's two runs just like that.
- 28:25Speaker 6: So I I just noticed, stay in my lane. You
- 28:27Speaker 6: know exactly what I need to go do every day
- 28:29Speaker 6: to be able to, you know, help this team win
- 28:31Speaker 6: at the end of the day. That's our goal is
- 28:32Speaker 6: to see how many wins we can give at the
- 28:33Speaker 6: end of year. And you know, play playing, you know October.
- 28:37Speaker 1: Okay, So what you just said, by the way, that
- 28:38Speaker 1: might be one of my favorite quotes. So Michael clicked
- 28:40Speaker 1: that because what you said about XBOSC guys who put
- 28:43Speaker 1: the ball and play more they have lower exbosty because
- 28:46Speaker 1: they put more balls and play. I love that. I
- 28:49Speaker 1: was a guy that date it shrinking out, so I
- 28:51Speaker 1: love that fact. Now I mentioned your dad. So in
- 28:53Speaker 1: two thousand and four, I was playing for the Giants
- 28:55Speaker 1: and he was in Pittsburgh and there was a play
- 28:58Speaker 1: at the plate between him and I. Okay, and it
- 29:00Speaker 1: was it was a throw down that it was coming
- 29:02Speaker 1: from Reyfield was up the line and I grab and
- 29:04Speaker 1: I have to dive and it was the winning run.
- 29:06Speaker 1: He was the winning run on third. So I catch
- 29:07Speaker 1: it and I dive back. As a catcher, you're taught
- 29:10Speaker 1: to just put your glove in front of the plate
- 29:11Speaker 1: and trying to block it. And he did the old
- 29:16Speaker 1: superman and he made it, and you know, they win.
- 29:19Speaker 1: It was a walk off win. And I've never felt
- 29:21Speaker 1: so deflated in my life because I'm like, I did
- 29:23Speaker 1: everything right. Everyone's like, how did you miss him? I'm like,
- 29:24Speaker 1: did you not see this?
- 29:27Speaker 6: Hard guys will do that second base. It's it's very
- 29:29Speaker 6: hard to be able to read that.
- 29:30Speaker 1: I'm never forgiving your dad form.
- 29:32Speaker 3: By the way.
- 29:32Speaker 1: It made me look like a fool.
- 29:33Speaker 6: So it's he was athletic.
- 29:37Speaker 1: I wasn't. Yeah I was. He was an athletic. I wasn't.
- 29:40Speaker 1: So what do you want me to do?
- 29:42Speaker 2: Now?
- 29:42Speaker 1: Your dad was great. He was always fun to talk to.
- 29:44Speaker 1: Always smiling, always bounce around, full of energy, and then
- 29:47Speaker 1: it seems like it carried over to you. So thank you, congratulations,
- 29:50Speaker 1: have a great year. I hope you go out and
- 29:54Speaker 1: you guys compete for it. And I'm bullish on you guys,
- 29:57Speaker 1: I keep telling him, I'm bullish on the a's man.
- 29:58Speaker 1: These guys are excited and enter and they are loving
- 30:01Speaker 1: where they're at right now.
- 30:03Speaker 5: Yeah, they can hit Jacob, Thank you so much. Really
- 30:05Speaker 5: appreciate it. Man, Good luck.
- 30:06Speaker 6: We'll talk to you, Okay, thank you for having me.
- 30:08Speaker 6: Thank you, thank you.
- 30:10Speaker 5: Next up, someone who's in the prime of his career,
- 30:12Speaker 5: one of the top pitchers in the sport. Who I
- 30:14Speaker 5: don't think that's enough attention. Hunter Brown was on Crush
- 30:18Speaker 5: City Territory. So let's show a low click.
- 30:21Speaker 9: Everyone's wondering, you know, this is the time of year
- 30:23Speaker 9: for extension. This is the time of year where negotiations
- 30:26Speaker 9: for extensions happen. I know there has at least been
- 30:30Speaker 9: some interest in the past between you and the Astros
- 30:33Speaker 9: and an extension. Is that something that you are open to.
- 30:37Speaker 9: Is that something that maybe you have told Scott boris
- 30:40Speaker 9: that that you'd like to explore kind of where are
- 30:42Speaker 9: you in that an extension world right now?
- 30:46Speaker 10: You know, those those conversations have obviously, you know, come
- 30:49Speaker 10: up between Scott and myself, and and with all transparency,
- 30:54Speaker 10: you know, I love Houston.
- 30:55Speaker 1: I love playing for this.
- 30:56Speaker 10: Team, you know, and and just I haven't anything since uh,
- 31:01Speaker 10: you know, I was a rookie. So my focus is
- 31:04Speaker 10: to be the best I can be for this team
- 31:07Speaker 10: this season, and you know that's that's what I'm focused on.
- 31:11Speaker 10: But like, like I said, I love putting on that
- 31:14Speaker 10: Astro's uniform and I got no no visions of doing
- 31:18Speaker 10: it anywhere else. So that that's what I can give you.
- 31:21Speaker 1: Guys.
- 31:22Speaker 10: I haven't I haven't heard anything, and that's that's just
- 31:24Speaker 10: kind of where I stand with that.
- 31:26Speaker 5: So, hey, j if I'm Jim Crane, owner of the Astros,
- 31:30Speaker 5: my phone almost is like a magnet. It was like, hey, Scott,
- 31:34Speaker 5: I just saw Hunter say he wants to be here forever.
- 31:36Speaker 5: Let's try and figure something out now before he ends
- 31:39Speaker 5: up costing a jillion dollars on the free agent market.
- 31:41Speaker 5: I saw it, Google got and arbitration. Let's uh, let's
- 31:44Speaker 5: get something number before all of that.
- 31:45Speaker 4: Thanks Byke.
- 31:47Speaker 1: Also, we thought Korea would be a lifetime astro. We
- 31:50Speaker 1: thought Bragman would be a lifetime astro. Two days the
- 31:52Speaker 1: only one that's kind of stuck it out right Fromberg
- 31:55Speaker 1: For a long time, we thought it would be a
- 31:56Speaker 1: lifelong astro. It just doesn't happen that often. It takes
- 32:00Speaker 1: special special person. I hope Hunter Brown becomes one of
- 32:02Speaker 1: those players. He gets to spend his entire career as
- 32:05Speaker 1: a Houston astro. But most of the time, Scott, it
- 32:07Speaker 1: doesn't work out, whether it's salary, whether it's the team
- 32:09Speaker 1: isn't very good, they need to move a guy. I mean,
- 32:11Speaker 1: think about how many go Kenker vir Junior. Everyone thought
- 32:13Speaker 1: he'd be a Mariner forever. He went to the Reds.
- 32:15Speaker 1: People forget he played for the White Sox for a while.
- 32:17Speaker 1: So let's you know, guys move around, People will switch teams,
- 32:21Speaker 1: and for fans, it sucks. But I hope Hunter Brown
- 32:24Speaker 1: gets to become one of those special special people that
- 32:26Speaker 1: spends his entire tim career with one organization.
- 32:31Speaker 8: Agreed, agreed to the fallest, upstanding gentlemen, great pitcher, and
- 32:37Speaker 8: you hear something like that, I feel like he's not
- 32:39Speaker 8: going to try and crush you with the price. He's
- 32:42Speaker 8: gonna won a fair price, and I think it now's
- 32:44Speaker 8: the time to do it. Man, spring training, you got
- 32:46Speaker 8: plenty of time for all that.
- 32:47Speaker 3: To go through.
- 32:48Speaker 7: So very nice. He chipped in there and made himself
- 32:51Speaker 7: look good right there for sure.
- 32:53Speaker 4: Yeah, top three, Hey, I'll say young. He even made
- 32:56Speaker 4: the Astros a little extra cash this year.
- 32:59Speaker 7: He was.
- 33:00Speaker 5: I mean, you want to talk surplus value, AJ where
- 33:03Speaker 5: you're making almost nothing. I think he's still league minimum, right,
- 33:05Speaker 5: and then your your PPI eligible. Yeah, so Houston gets
- 33:08Speaker 5: a comp pick at I think back half of the
- 33:11Speaker 5: first round.
- 33:12Speaker 1: So he was good for a while there. I was
- 33:15Speaker 1: riding him hard for a while there on my bets
- 33:18Speaker 1: because he was one of the best pictures in baseball
- 33:20Speaker 1: for a long time. He had a couple of rough
- 33:21Speaker 1: starts down the stretch, but for the most part, Hunter
- 33:24Speaker 1: Brown was one of the best pictures in baseball last year.
- 33:26Speaker 1: I mean, it's tough when you got School in the
- 33:27Speaker 1: American League and Crochet in the American League. Finished top three.
- 33:31Speaker 1: He had a pretty damn good year.
- 33:34Speaker 5: Yeah, and they've done it, like you mentioned al two
- 33:36Speaker 5: Vay Jordan Alvarez has a chance to stay with the
- 33:40Speaker 5: Astros for his entire career. I know he's had some
- 33:42Speaker 5: injury issues lately, but I would still call him a
- 33:45Speaker 5: surplus value too, because when the bat's there, I mean,
- 33:47Speaker 5: it's a top ten bat in the sport and probably
- 33:50Speaker 5: a top five clutch bat in the sport.
- 33:52Speaker 4: So there's two.
- 33:53Speaker 5: This to me is the one where I would have
- 33:55Speaker 5: the conversation this spring.
- 33:59Speaker 1: Yes, agreed, agreed, But we'll see, we'll see who's his
- 34:02Speaker 1: agent that matters.
- 34:05Speaker 4: Didn't he say Boris?
- 34:06Speaker 7: Just now?
- 34:07Speaker 1: Did he say Boris? If he's Boris?
- 34:08Speaker 3: Then I think he did.
- 34:09Speaker 4: Yeah, Yeah, it's Boris.
- 34:14Speaker 1: Okay, Well, good luck getting that extension then, because Wors
- 34:17Speaker 1: doesn't do a lot of extensions. He will, but he
- 34:19Speaker 1: doesn't do a lot of those extensions exactly.
- 34:23Speaker 5: Hey, if you want to hear that full interview, it's
- 34:26Speaker 5: really good. Hunter Brown on Crush Shitty Territory there. It
- 34:29Speaker 5: is part of the FT Network with Chandler, Josh Tyler.
- 34:33Speaker 5: Tyler and Chandler were handling the interview.
- 34:36Speaker 1: What what why is Houston called crush City?
- 34:42Speaker 4: That's their thing? You're asking me?
- 34:45Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 34:46Speaker 1: As the host and allegedly the smartest guy on the
- 34:51Speaker 1: show according to the chat.
- 34:54Speaker 5: Okay, yeah, just a quick AI check. It highlights the
- 34:58Speaker 5: Astro's high volume home ru un hitting during their twenty
- 35:01Speaker 5: fifteen season, when they finished with the second most home
- 35:03Speaker 5: runs in MLB. Term was popularized during that year's playoff
- 35:07Speaker 5: run and served as a modern power hitting variation of
- 35:11Speaker 5: the City's traditional Clutch City moniker Crush City stuck.
- 35:17Speaker 8: Well, who was the lufty that was on the age
- 35:19Speaker 8: first the outfielder and then came over at the Astro.
- 35:23Speaker 7: Talking about Reddick Reddick, Yeah, didn't he start that up?
- 35:27Speaker 7: Or I could be you might have.
- 35:30Speaker 4: I don't know. You guys one be guys are really
- 35:32Speaker 4: putting me to the test today. I don't know everything.
- 35:36Speaker 4: I'm a nerd, but I don't know at all.
- 35:38Speaker 1: I googled it. By the way, bun Bee released a
- 35:40Speaker 1: song called crush City to honor the twenty fifteen Astros,
- 35:43Speaker 1: and there you go. It's a it's a derivative of
- 35:46Speaker 1: Clutch City for the Astros with Clyde Drexler and a
- 35:49Speaker 1: kim O LaJuan that won the NBA.
- 35:53Speaker 7: Slama Drama.
- 35:55Speaker 5: That's why Astros fans really liked the name of the show.
- 35:58Speaker 5: They were a big fan.
- 35:59Speaker 1: I just never knew. I just didn't know, that's no question.
- 36:04Speaker 1: I thought there was some reason for Now I.
- 36:06Speaker 5: Know, And next next time you have chandler on who
- 36:09Speaker 5: has covered the team for years now been ask him.
- 36:11Speaker 4: You might even have more insight.
