Transcript
- 0:13Eleven hundred and fourteen people packed into Phoenix for WordCamp US back in
- 0:17August, and, uh, look, across fifty plus sessions, the conversation completely
- 0:22turned a corner.
- 0:23We are, we are way past the hype of prompt generators now.
- 0:28Automattic was on stage showing a WordPress Agent actually taking commands through
- 0:32email and Telegram, running site tasks directly.
- 0:35Yeah, and, and that demo really exposed the core problem we have right now.
- 0:40The way WordPress permissions work today, it, it just completely breaks when you
- 0:44bring AI agents into the mix.
- 0:46Traditional roles like administrator assume a human is clicking buttons in the wp
- 0:51admin dashboard.
- 0:53But an AI agent?
- 0:54It reads and acts directly against your database and your REST APIs.
- 0:59Give an agent administrator access and it can silently drop plugin files or modify
- 1:04your post tables in milliseconds.
- 1:06Right!
- 1:07That is why the Core AI team rolled out that Trust Ladder framework proposal back on
- 1:11August 6.
- 1:12It is a four tier model designed specifically around primitives like the WordPress
- 1:17AI Client, the Abilities API, and the MCP Adapter.
- 1:21Tier one is strictly read only observation.
- 1:23Tier two lets the agent draft suggestions.
- 1:26Tier three requires explicit human approval before any write operation happens.
- 1:30And tier four is fully scoped autonomous execution.
- 1:32Okay, but, but tier three is where I start having serious doubts.
- 1:36Requiring a human to approve every single write action?
- 1:40We are just recreating the exact same notification fatigue we had with legacy
- 1:44security plugins five years ago.
- 1:46You know what happens when a site owner gets twenty approve or deny emails a day for
- 1:50basic routine edits?
- 1:52They, they just hit approve all without reading, or they turn off the approval queue
- 1:57completely.
- 1:58It makes the guardrail totally useless.
- 2:00Nick, if an agency leaves an agent unmonitored on tier four and it wipes a
- 2:04WooCommerce database or publishes hallucinated pricing, who gets sued?
- 2:09The agency does.
- 2:10You cannot run autonomous write operations on client infrastructure without an
- 2:14explicit audit trail and approval step.
- 2:17The legal and data liability is way too massive to just hand over the keys because
- 2:21notifications are annoying.
- 2:23And, and from an architectural standpoint, remember that agents do not interpret
- 2:28design, they interpret structure.
- 2:30If your underlying site content model is fragmented, an unmonitored agent trying to
- 2:35execute a task is going to misinterpret fields and write corrupted data straight to
- 2:39the database.
- 2:40Which is actually where the real business opportunity comes in for builders.
- 2:44That old ninety nine dollar a month maintenance plan where you just updated plugins
- 2:48once a week?
- 2:49That model is dead.
- 2:51Agencies are replacing it right now with AI governance as a high margin billable
- 2:55service.
- 2:56You package scoped API credentials, custom approval workflows,
- 3:01audit logging, and automated rollback points into your monthly management tier.
- 3:05Exactly, and clients will actually pay for that because it gives them security while
- 3:10letting them use AI.
- 3:11But to deliver that in Q3 and Q4, developers have a very specific checklist to run
- 3:17through immediately.
- 3:18Step one is auditing every third party plugin on the site to see which ones expose
- 3:23write capable abilities.
- 3:24Step two is defining clear approval roles with your client so everyone knows who
- 3:29authorizes automated changes.
- 3:31Step three is setting up compliance logging.
- 3:33And step four is cleaning up messy custom fields so the AI actually understands what
- 3:38it is looking at.
- 3:39And the timeline here is not optional.
- 3:41WordPress 7.2 is scheduled to land December 8 to 10 alongside State of the Word.
- 3:46Plus, major web hosts are rolling out PHP 8.3 enforcement right around December 7.
- 3:52That gives site builders a tight four month window to get agent governance built
- 3:57into their stack before these autonomous tools become table stakes.
- 4:00The shift is happening right now.
- 4:02The sites that prepare their architecture today are the ones that will run the
- 4:05agentic web tomorrow.
