Latest / 1 Year Audio Bible Podcast / I'd Give My Salvation | Paul's Sorrow for Israel (Romans 9) (July 25)
Transcript
- 0:00In the opening verses of Romans chapter 9, Paul says
- 0:04with great sorrow and grief in his heart that
- 0:08he would be willing to give up his own salvation in Christ
- 0:13if it would bring his countrymen, his fellow Jews,
- 0:18into salvation in Christ.
- 0:22And then he talks about who the Israelites are.
- 0:26Concerning the adoption, the glory,
- 0:30the covenants that were given to Israel the people,
- 0:33the giving of the law, the service of God, and the promises,
- 0:38of whom are the fathers and from whom according to the flesh Christ came,
- 0:43who is over all. So he's going
- 0:46to unpack for us some very, very important principles in Romans
- 0:50chapter 9 10 and 11.
- 0:55The question is, how do we become a member of the household
- 0:58or the family of God? In the Old
- 1:02Covenant, the first covenant that was given at Mount Sinai through
- 1:06Moses, basically if you were ethnically part
- 1:11of Israel by descent through Abraham and Isaac and Jacob,
- 1:15then you were automatically a member of God's household.
- 1:19If you were an ethnic Israelite. But now
- 1:23the rules for God's household have
- 1:27changed. Now there's a New Covenant,
- 1:31and to become a member of God's household,
- 1:35it is now opened up to Gentiles— that is, anyone who is not
- 1:39Jewish. Everybody else, all the nations,
- 1:43are invited and can have access and become a member
- 1:47of the household of God. How?
- 1:50Not by obeying the Law of Moses, the Law,
- 1:54the Torah that was given at Mount Sinai, but in the new house—
- 1:58in the new household rules, now anyone
- 2:03can become a member through faith in Jesus Christ.
- 2:09Listen in as we unpack Romans 9: 10
- 2:13and 11 and look at Israel, the Jews,
- 2:18the Gentiles, and being a part of God's household.
- 2:23Welcome to the One Year Audio Bible Podcast. Today is
- 2:26July 25th. Now let's continue our journey reading through the entire
- 2:31Bible in one year. This week we are reading from the
- 2:34Israel Bible for the Old Testament and from the King James for the New Testament.
- 2:39Numbers 29:21-29:40.
- 2:46The meal offerings and libations for the bulls, rams, and lambs
- 2:50in the quantities prescribed, and 1 goat for a sin offering in
- 2:54addition to the regular burnt offering, its meal offering,
- 2:57and libation. 4th day: 10 bulls, 2 rams,
- 3:0214 yearling lambs without blemish. The meal offerings and
- 3:06libations for the bulls, rams, and lambs in the quantities prescribed,
- 3:10and 1 goat for a sin offering, in addition to the regular
- 3:14burnt offering, its meal offering, and libation.
- 3:185th day: 9 bulls, 2 rams,
- 3:2014 yearling lambs without blemish, the meal offerings
- 3:24and libations for the bulls, rams, and lambs in the quantities prescribed,
- 3:29and 1 goat for a sin offering. In addition to the regular burnt
- 3:33offering, its meal offering and libation. 6th day:
- 3:378 bulls, 2 rams, 14 yearling lambs without blemish,
- 3:42the meal offerings and libations for the bulls, rams, and lambs
- 3:45in the quantities prescribed, and 1 goat for a sin
- 3:49offering in addition to the regular burnt offering, its meal offering,
- 3:53and libations. 7th day: 7
- 3:57bulls, 2 rams, 14 yearling lambs without blemish,
- 4:01the meal offerings and libations for the bulls, rams, and lambs
- 4:05in the quantities prescribed, and 1 goat for a sin offering,
- 4:09in addition to the regular burnt offering, its meal offering,
- 4:12and libation. On the 8th day you shall
- 4:15hold a solemn gathering; you shall not work at your occupations.
- 4:20You shall present a burnt offering, an offering by fire of
- 4:23pleasing odor to Hashem, 1 bull, 1 ram,
- 4:277 yearling lambs without blemish, the meal offerings
- 4:31and libations for the bull, the ram, and the lambs in the
- 4:35quantities prescribed, and 1 goat for a sin offering,
- 4:38in addition to the regular burnt offering, its meal offering,
- 4:42and libation. All these you shall offer to Hashem
- 4:46at the stated times in addition to your votive and
- 4:50freewill offerings, be they burnt offerings and meal offerings,
- 4:53libations, or offerings of well-being.
- 4:58So Moses spoke to the Israelites, just as Hashem
- 5:02had commanded Moses.
- 5:082 Chronicles 14:1-16:14.
- 5:13Asa did what was good and pleasing to Hashem his God.
- 5:17He abolished the alien altars and shrines. He smashed
- 5:21the pillars and cut down the sacred posts. He ordered Judah to
- 5:24turn to the God of their fathers and to observe
- 5:28the teaching and the commandment. He abolished the shrines and the incense stands throughout
- 5:33the cities of Judah, and the kingdom was untroubled under him.
- 5:38He built fortified towns in Judah since the land was untroubled,
- 5:42and he was not engaged in warfare during those years. For Hashem
- 5:46had granted him respite. He said to Judah,
- 5:49Let us build up these cities and surround them with walls and
- 5:53towers and gates and bars, while the land is at our disposal,
- 5:58because we turned to Hashem our God. We turned to Him and
- 6:01He gave us respite on all sides. They were successful in their
- 6:06building. Asa had an army of 300,000 men from Judah bearing
- 6:10shields and spears, and 280,000 from Benjamin,
- 6:14bearing bucklers and drawing the bow. All these were valiant men.
- 6:18Zerah the Cushite marched out against them with an army
- 6:22of 1,000,000 and 300 chariots. When he reached
- 6:26Mareshah, Asa confronted him and the battle lines were drawn
- 6:30in the Valley of Zephath by Mareshah. Asa called to
- 6:33Hashem his God and said, Hashem, it is all the same
- 6:37to You to help the numerous and the powerless.
- 6:41Help us, Hashem our God, for we rely on You, and in Your
- 6:45name we have come against this great multitude. You are Hashem
- 6:49our God. Let no mortal hinder You.
- 6:53So Hashem routed the Cushites before Asa and Judah,
- 6:57and the Cushites fled. Asa and the army with
- 7:00him pursued them as far as Gerar. Many of the Cushites
- 7:05fell wounded beyond recovery, for they broke before Hashem and His camp.
- 7:08Very much spoil was taken. All the cities in the vicinity
- 7:13of Gerar were ravaged, for a terror of Hashem seized
- 7:17them. All the cities were plundered and they yielded much booty.
- 7:20They also ravaged the encampment of herdsmen,
- 7:23capturing much sheep and camels. Then they
- 7:27returned to Jerusalem. The Spirit of Hashem came
- 7:31upon Azariah son of Oded. He came to Asa and said
- 7:35to him, Listen to me, Asa and all Judah and Benjamin.
- 7:39Hashem is with you as long as you are with Him.
- 7:42If you turn to Him, He will respond to you. But if you forsake
- 7:47Him, He will forsake you. Israel has gone many days
- 7:50without the true Hashem, without a kohen to give
- 7:54instruction and without teaching. But in distress it returned to
- 7:57God of Israel and sought Him, and He responded to them.
- 8:01At those times no wayfarer was safe, for there was much tumult,
- 8:06among all the inhabitants of the lands.
- 8:09Nation was crushed by nation and city by city, for Hashem
- 8:13threw them into panic with every kind of trouble. As for you,
- 8:17be strong, do not be disheartened, for there is
- 8:20reward for your labor. When Asa heard these words,
- 8:24the prophecy of Oded the Navi, he took courage and
- 8:28removed the abominations from the entire land of Judah and Benjamin,
- 8:32and from the cities that he had captured in the hill country of Ephraim.
- 8:36He restored the altar of Hashem in front of the porch of Hashem.
- 8:40He assembled all the people of Judah and Benjamin
- 8:43and those people of Ephraim, Manasseh, and Simon who sojourned
- 8:48among them, for many in Israel had thrown in their lot with him when
- 8:51they saw that Hashem his God was with him.
- 8:54They were assembled in Jerusalem in the 3rd month of the 15th
- 8:58year of the reign of Asa. They brought sacrifices to Hashem
- 9:02on that day. They brought 700 oxen and 7,000
- 9:07sheep of the spoil. They entered
- 9:10into a covenant to worship God of their fathers with all their heart and
- 9:14with all their soul. Whoever would not worship God of
- 9:18Israel would be put to death, whether small or great, whether man
- 9:22or woman. So they took an oath to Hashem in a loud
- 9:26voice and with shouts, with trumpeting and blasts of the shofar. All Judah
- 9:31rejoiced over the oath, for they swore with all their heart and
- 9:34sought Him with all their will. He responded
- 9:38to them and gave them respite on every side. He also
- 9:42deposed Maacah, mother of King Asa, from the rank of queen
- 9:46mother, because she had made an abominable thing for the goddess
- 9:50of Asherah.
- 9:54Asa cut down her abominable thing, reduced it to dust,
- 9:57and burned it in the Wadi Kidron. The shrines indeed
- 10:01were not abolished in Israel; however, Asa was wholehearted
- 10:05with Hashem all his life. He brought into
- 10:09the House of Hashem the things that he and his father had consecrated: silver,
- 10:13gold, and utensils. There was no war until
- 10:17the 35th year of the reign of Asa.
- 10:20In the 36th year of the reign of Asa, King Baasha of Israel
- 10:25marched against Judah and built up Ramah to block
- 10:29all movement of King Asa of Judah. Asa took
- 10:32all the silver and gold from the treasuries of the House of Hashem and the
- 10:37royal palace and sent them to King Ben-Hadad of Aram,
- 10:40who resided in Damascus, with this message:
- 10:44There is a pact between me and you, as there was between my
- 10:48father and your father. I herewith send you silver and gold.
- 10:52Go and break your pact with King Baasha of Israel so that he may
- 10:56withdraw from me. Ben-Hadad acceded to
- 11:00King Asa's request. He sent his army commanders against the towns
- 11:04of Israel and ravaged Ijon, Dan,
- 11:08Abelmaim, and all the garrison towns of Naphtali. When Baasha
- 11:13heard about it, he stopped building up Ramah and put an end to the work
- 11:16on it. Then King Asa mustered all Judah
- 11:20and they carried away the stones and timber with which Baasha
- 11:24had built up Ramah. With these King Asa built up Geba
- 11:28and Mizpah. At that time Hanani the seer came
- 11:31to King Asa of Judah and said to him, Because you relied
- 11:36on the king of Aram and did not rely on HaShem your
- 11:39God, therefore the army of the king of Aram has slipped
- 11:44out of your hands.
- 11:48The Cushites and Libyans were a mighty army with chariots and
- 11:52horsemen in very great numbers. Yet because you relied on Hashem,
- 11:56He delivered them into your hands.
- 11:59For the eyes of Hashem range over the entire earth to
- 12:03give support to those who are wholeheartedly with Him. You have
- 12:07acted foolishly in this matter, and henceforth you will be beset
- 12:12by wars. Asa was vexed at
- 12:15the seer and put him into the stocks, for he was furious
- 12:19with him because of that. Asa inflicted cruelties on some of the people
- 12:23at that time. The acts of Asa
- 12:27early and late are recorded in the Annals of the Kings of Judah and Israel.
- 12:32In the 39th year of his reign, Asa suffered from an acute
- 12:36foot ailment. But ill as he was, he still did not turn to
- 12:40Hashem but to physicians. Asa slept
- 12:44with his fathers. He died in the 41st year of his reign
- 12:47and was buried in the grave that he had made for himself in the City
- 12:51of David. He was laid in his resting place which was filled with
- 12:54spices of all kinds, expertly blended. A very great
- 12:58fire was made in his honor.
- 13:08Romans 9:1-21.
- 13:12I Paul say the truth in Christ, I lie not,
- 13:16my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost,
- 13:19that I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart.
- 13:23For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ
- 13:27for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh. Who are Israelites,
- 13:31to whom pertains the adoption, and the glory,
- 13:35and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God,
- 13:38and the promises; whose are the fathers,
- 13:42and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came,
- 13:46who is over all, God blessed forever.
- 13:49Amen. Not as though the word of God has taken no
- 13:53effect. For they are not all Israel,
- 13:56which are Israel. Neither because
- 13:59they are the seed of Abraham are they all children,
- 14:03but in Isaac shall your seed be called.
- 14:07That is, they which are the children of the flesh, these are not
- 14:11the children of God, but the children of the promise are
- 14:14counted for the seed. For this is the word of promise,
- 14:19at this time will I come, and Sarah shall have a son, And not
- 14:23only this, but when Rebekah also had conceived by one,
- 14:27even by her father Isaac; for the children being not yet
- 14:31born, neither having done any good or evil,
- 14:35that the purpose of God according to election might stand,
- 14:38not of works, but of Him that calls; it
- 14:43was said to her, The elder shall serve the younger. As it
- 14:47is written, Jacob have I loved, But Esau have
- 14:51I hated. What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness
- 14:55with God? God forbid! For He said to
- 14:59Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I
- 15:03will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.
- 15:06So then it is not of him that wills, nor of him
- 15:10that runs, but of God that shows mercy.
- 15:14For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose
- 15:18have I raised you up, that I might show my power in you,
- 15:22and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth.
- 15:26Therefore has he mercy on whom he will have mercy,
- 15:30and whom he will he hardens.
- 15:33You will say then to me, Why does he yet find fault?
- 15:37For who has resisted his will? Nay, but, O man,
- 15:41who are you that replies against God? Shall the thing that
- 15:45formed Say to Him that formed it, Why have You made me thus?
- 15:49Has not the potter power over the clay, of the same
- 15:53lump to make one vessel to honor and another to dishonor?
- 16:01Psalm 19:1-14.
- 16:05The heavens declare the glory of God; the firmament shows
- 16:09His handiwork. Day to day utters speech, and night to
- 16:13night shows knowledge. There is no speech nor language where
- 16:17their voice is not heard. Their line is gone out through all
- 16:20the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them
- 16:24has he set a tabernacle for the sun, which is
- 16:27as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoices
- 16:30as a strong man to run a race. His going forth is
- 16:34from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends
- 16:38of it, and there is nothing hidden the heat thereof.
- 16:42The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul.
- 16:46The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise
- 16:50the simple. The statutes of the Lord are right,
- 16:53rejoicing the heart. The commandment of the Lord is pure,
- 16:57enlightening the eyes. The fear of the Lord is clean,
- 17:02enduring forever. The judgments of the Lord are
- 17:05true and righteous altogether. More to be desired
- 17:09are they than gold, yes, than much fine gold; sweeter also
- 17:14than honey and the honeycomb. Moreover by them is your servant warned,
- 17:19and in keeping of them there is great reward.
- 17:22Who can understand his errors? Cleanse me from my secret
- 17:27faults. Keep back your servant also from presumptuous
- 17:31sins; let them not have dominion over me.
- 17:34Then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent
- 17:38from the great transgression. Let the words of my mouth
- 17:42and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight,
- 17:46O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer.
- 17:54Proverbs 20:1. Wine is a
- 17:57mocker, strong drink is raging. And whosoever is deceived
- 18:02thereby is not wise.
- 18:05I want to speak to you today from our reading from Romans chapter
- 18:099. And first of all, what we— the
- 18:13next few chapters in Romans, Romans 9, 10, and 11,
- 18:17really explain much and reveal much to us
- 18:21about Israel. And First
- 18:26of all, Paul tells us he himself is an Israelite.
- 18:30He uses the word Israelite and Jew interchangeably,
- 18:34that he is Jewish. He's of the tribe of Benjamin.
- 18:38And he goes on to say, if I
- 18:41could give up my own salvation in
- 18:45order for my brethren, that is the Jews, to come to know Christ,
- 18:49I would give up my salvation. He has great heaviness in his heart
- 18:53and continual sorrow in his heart. Because so many of
- 18:57the Jews at his time were rejecting salvation
- 19:01through Christ. Now, he talks
- 19:04about who the Israelites are, the nation
- 19:08of Israel, and that they were under
- 19:11the covenant, the first covenant that was given at Mount
- 19:15Sinai, the giving of the law. They were under Moses.
- 19:19They were given the service of God through the Kohanim,
- 19:23the Levite priesthood. And that
- 19:26the promises came from God to Abraham and
- 19:30through his children, that Abraham's seed would be
- 19:34more numerous than all the stars in the sky and more numerous than
- 19:37all the sand on the seashore. And so we owe a
- 19:41tremendous debt to the Jewish people.
- 19:4799% of the Bible, both Old Testament and New Testament,
- 19:51were written by Jews. They faithfully scribed
- 19:56and meticulously copied the Scriptures,
- 20:00and so they have given us the Bible.
- 20:03They have also given us a Jewish Messiah,
- 20:06Jesus, who is of the line from the tribe of
- 20:10Judah. And so they
- 20:14are a special, set-apart, chosen people.
- 20:18God calls them a special treasured possession and a
- 20:22peculiar people, a nation of priesthoods.
- 20:25But Paul goes on to say the Jews, they're chosen,
- 20:30the nation of Israel, it's a chosen set-apart nation. So there's
- 20:34a nation called Israel, there's a land called Israel,
- 20:38and there's a people called Israel, and there's a man whose
- 20:42name was originally Jacob, but his name changes to
- 20:46Israel. So when I speak of Israel here in
- 20:50this chapter, I'm speaking of those who are ethnically
- 20:54Israel. They are of the lineal descent,
- 20:58genealogical descent from Abraham, Isaac,
- 21:02and Jacob, whose name was changed to Israel.
- 21:05But Paul goes on to say, not as
- 21:09though the Word of God has taken no effect, for they are not all Israel
- 21:13which are of Israel. What does he mean by
- 21:17that? Not all are Israel
- 21:22which are of Israel. Well,
- 21:25God's household is called the house
- 21:29of Israel. It's family language, it's family talk
- 21:33that you become members of God's household. And he chose the
- 21:38nation of Israel at Mount Sinai, the ancient nation of Israel. And you
- 21:41were a member of the house of Israel ethnically,
- 21:45by genealogical descent. But there's
- 21:49been a change in God's household, a change in the rules.
- 21:54And the change is this: that now anyone
- 21:58can become a member of God's household by faith
- 22:03in Jesus Christ, and that it's open now
- 22:07to Gentiles. It's open to anyone from
- 22:10any nation, any tribe, any language.
- 22:14And so what he's saying here in verse 7,
- 22:19not all are Israel which are of Israel, is that there
- 22:22are Jews who are not
- 22:26members of God's household because they have not placed their faith in
- 22:30Jesus Christ. And so though ethnically they may be of
- 22:34the stock of Israel,
- 22:38they are not necessarily members of God's household.
- 22:42And so we have Jew and Gentile who are now
- 22:46invited and freely invited to be a member of God's
- 22:50household through faith in Jesus Christ.
- 22:55We will talk about this more in the next day or
- 22:59two as we get into Romans chapter 10 and
- 23:03Romans chapter 11. Have a blessed day,
- 23:06and we'll see you tomorrow.
