- 0:02Everywhere we look, whether in material nature or in the vital
- 0:07or mental domains, we see a play of forces, attraction and
- 0:12repulsion, centrifugal and centripetal force, positive and
- 0:18negative, dark and light, et cetera.
- 0:22It appears to be a core principle of the creation to
- 0:25utilize these opposing forces to create the dynamic needed for a
- 0:29progressive evolution of consciousness.
- 0:33Opposition appears to strengthen the forces of growth.
- 0:37We find that trees and plants subjected to somewhat strong
- 0:40winds, for instance, tend to root themselves more firmly.
- 0:46What is not so obvious to us is the conscious intentionality
- 0:51behind the operation of these forces.
- 0:54This is mainly due to our limited viewpoint that treats
- 0:57what we cannot directly see and understand as simply a
- 1:01mechanism, rather than the actions and resultant impacts of
- 1:06conscious entities making conscious choices.
- 1:10We may experience various negative consequences in the
- 1:14world. We may become angry, enraged,
- 1:17lustful, or otherwise extremely passionate, and we simply treat
- 1:23this as a response to events that occur without specific
- 1:27conscious causation. We can see, and in fact often do
- 1:34learn about manipulation that takes place among human society
- 1:39to pressure people into responding or acting in a
- 1:41certain manner. This is done through creation of
- 1:45fear, desire, pressure of various sorts, Appeals to
- 1:50vanity, offers of fame, power, wealth, or sex, and through
- 1:55false or misleading information. Rumor and gossip are also
- 2:01powerful means of dissemination, of implied meaning that 'cause
- 2:05people to respond in very predictable ways.
- 2:08Generally, the pressure tends to create specific types of
- 2:12responses based on the guna that is predominant in the situation.
- 2:19It should not surprise us, then, that it is possible, indeed
- 2:23likely, that beings who operate on another plane, such as the
- 2:28Vital plane, would work to manipulate our responses for
- 2:33their own benefit or enjoyment. Since most people have little
- 2:37direct experience with beings on these other planes, they tend to
- 2:41disregard this potential source of what they experience in the
- 2:45outer world. That is, however, like saying
- 2:49that because we cannot see it, electricity has no impact.
- 2:54There are individuals who have had direct experience of vital
- 2:57beings and their interactions in the human world, and they report
- 3:02what could be expected based on what others see occurring in the
- 3:06outer world. In other words, just as
- 3:09electricity has a cause and an effect, so too do the vital or
- 3:14mental beings and their action have cause and effect.
- 3:21We see in all the great religious traditions and even in
- 3:25the great literature of the world, an individual or multiple
- 3:29individuals having such relations and interactions.
- 3:34Jesus was tempted by the devil. Buddha was confronted by Mara.
- 3:39Moses had direct interaction with God to free the Israelites
- 3:43from Egyptian slavery and to lead his people to Palestine and
- 3:48to establish the 10 Commandments to be followed by them.
- 3:53Zoroastrianism described the conflict between light and
- 3:56darkness. The Rig Veda told of the hiding
- 4:00of the light and the need to liberate it from the control of
- 4:02the forces of darkness. Hamlet was visited by the ghost
- 4:07of his father, who drove him to action of revenge.
- 4:11Richard, the third of England, was visited by the spirits of
- 4:15those he had wronged in his ascent to the throne.
- 4:19Brutus had an experience just prior to a decisive battle that
- 4:23evidenced the action of vital powers to undermine his
- 4:27confidence. The piranhas are filled with
- 4:31stories relating the interaction of various gods with human
- 4:36individuals to accomplish some purpose in the world.
- 4:41All of these forces are seen to act with conscious intention and
- 4:45to act upon situations, events, circumstances, and individuals
- 4:51in the external world we inhabit and within which we live and
- 4:55act. Sri Aurobindo observes, quote
- 5:00There are forces, and subliminal experience seems to show that
- 5:05there are superphysical beings embodying those forces that are
- 5:10attached in their root nature to ignorance, to darkness of
- 5:14consciousness, to misuse of force, to perversity, of
- 5:19delight, to all the causes and consequences of the things that
- 5:23we call evil. These powers, beings, or forces
- 5:29are active to impose their adverse constructions upon
- 5:32terrestrial creatures eager to maintain their reign.
- 5:37In the manifestation they oppose the increase of light and truth
- 5:41and good, and still more are antagonistic to the progress of
- 5:46the soul towards a divine consciousness and divine
- 5:50existence. It is this feature of existence
- 5:54that we see figured in the tradition of the conflict
- 5:57between the powers of light and darkness, good and evil, cosmic
- 6:01harmony and cosmic anarchy. A tradition universal in ancient
- 6:06myth and in religion in common to all systems of occult
- 6:11knowledge. End Quote.
