Saint Bonaventure was born in Tuscany in 12/21. He entered the Franciscan order in consequence of a miraculous cure due to the intercession of Saint Francis of Assisi. His master was Alexander of Hales who used to say of his virginal disciple that one would have thought him preserved from original sin.

He was a doctor at 30 and taught at the University of Paris at the same time as Saint Thomas Aquinas to whom he was closely united. He was awarded the title of Seraphic Doctor, appointed General of his Order, and later a Cardinal of the Church. He died in the year of our Lord 1274 during the General Council of Lyon where Greeks and Latins vied in admiring his ardor and clear mindedness which made him the light of faith. In the name of the father and of the son and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.
• 1:43
The introit. In the midst of the church, he opened his mouth, and the Lord filled him with the spirit of wisdom and understanding. He clothed him with a robe of glory. Sweet it is to praise the Lord, to sing most high God in honor of thy name. Glory be to the father and to the son and to the holy ghost as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages.
• 2:20
Amen. In the midst of the church he opened his mouth and the Lord filled him with the spirit of wisdom and understanding. He clothed him with a robe of glory. The Collect. Let us pray.
• 2:41
O God, who willed to enlighten your church by the wondrous learning and glorious merits of the life of blessed Bonaventure, your confessor and doctor, we humbly pray you that by his pleading, you will shield her with your lasting power against the snares of error and evil through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. A lesson from the second letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to Timothy. Dearly beloved, I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus who is to judge the living and the dead and by his appearing and his kingdom. Preach the word.
• 3:46
Be urgent in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, and exhort. Be unfailing in patience and in doctrine For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears, they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own likings and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander into myths. As for you, always be steady, Endure suffering. Do the work of an evangelist.
• 4:35
Fulfill your ministry. For I am already being poured out in sacrifice. The time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race.
• 4:54
I have kept the faith. Henceforth, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day. And not only to me, but also to all who have loved his advent. The gradual. The mouth of the just shall meditate wisdom, and his tongue shall speak judgment.
• 5:30
The law of God is in his heart, and his steps shall not be supplanted. Alleluia. Alleluia. The Lord has sworn, and he will not repent. Thou art a priest forever according to the order of Melpisedec.
• 5:51
Alleluia. A continuation of the holy gospel according to Matthew. At that time, Jesus said to his disciples, you are the salt of the earth. But if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trodden underfoot by men.
• 6:22
You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and give glory to your father who is in heaven. Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets. I have not come to abolish them, but to fulfill them.
• 7:03
For truly I say to you till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot will pass from the law until all is accomplished. Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and so teaches men shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but he that shall do them and teach them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. The Offeratory. My truth and my mercy shall be with him, and in my name shall his horn be exalted. The secret.
• 7:58
May this annual feast of Saint Bonaventure, thy confessor and bishop, make us in thy kindness acceptable to thee, O Lord. And may this present rite duly appease thee, bring happy recompense to him and assure gifts of thy grace to us through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. The common preface. Just it is indeed and fitting, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O holy Lord, father almighty, everlasting God, through whom the angels praise thy majesty, the dominions worship it, the powers stand in awe.
• 9:04

We entreat thee that thou command it be permitted us to join with them in confessing thee while we say with lowly praise. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, the heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
• 9:42
Hosanna in the highest. The communion. He is a faithful and wise servant whom the Lord setteth over his family to give them their measure of wheat in due season. The post communion. Let us pray.
