- 0:00Speaker 1: The playoff is interesting, and I want to get to
- 0:02Speaker 1: the 24 team. I want to get to the 24
- 0:05Speaker 1: team because I need that as a soundbite on here.
- 0:07Speaker 1: I don't have it, but this is the best I
- 0:09Speaker 1: can do. The 24 team is something that I know
- 0:14Speaker 1: you've had a lot of thoughts on. Honestly, I don't
- 0:16Speaker 1: want to spend a lot of time on that because
- 0:17Speaker 1: I think everybody in the world agrees on that, except
- 0:19Speaker 1: for the people that are making the decisions. So I
- 0:24Speaker 1: do want to talk about this year's playoff. I know
- 0:27Speaker 1: we focus a lot sec big 10 miami notre dame
- 0:32Speaker 1: and i think there's a really interesting scenario happening the
- 0:36Speaker 1: big 12 right now that could really make it chaotic
- 0:38Speaker 1: once we get there you just had the week of
- 0:41Speaker 1: death in the sec you had notre dame take a
- 0:44Speaker 1: loss you had miami not quite look great though they're
- 0:46Speaker 1: still in really good position and within the acc and
- 0:49Speaker 1: looking at their conference schedule um and you've Got a
- 0:53Speaker 1: big 12 scenario that I think is crazy. This is
- 0:55Speaker 1: presented by prize picks more on them in a bit. But, uh,
- 0:58Speaker 1: right now BYU beating Notre Dame really opened things up
- 1:03Speaker 1: for that conference to get multiple teams into the playoff.
- 1:06Speaker 1: And I don't know, I think the over under on
- 1:08Speaker 1: teams getting into the playoff for the big 12. Now
- 1:10Speaker 1: this could change in a week if they have a week,
- 1:12Speaker 1: just like, um, yeah, it's two and a half to me.
- 1:16Speaker 1: It's like, I mean, which you, you put up the three, um,
- 1:19Speaker 1: because I guess you, you don't have a nub on
- 1:21Speaker 1: either of your hands. So you did put up the full,
- 1:24Speaker 1: the full three and do it. Um, BYU beating Notre
- 1:27Speaker 1: Dame and then Utah being undefeated right now, Texas tech
- 1:32Speaker 1: being undefeated and starting to, I don't know if they
- 1:35Speaker 1: quite look like they did last year, but starting to
- 1:37Speaker 1: round a little bit more in a form where I
- 1:39Speaker 1: don't think you look at anybody on Texas tech schedule
- 1:40Speaker 1: and say, Oh, there's the, there's the loss, right? They, they,
- 1:45Speaker 1: They look like a team that's going to go undefeated.
- 1:47Speaker 1: If we end up with a scenario where Utah wins
- 1:50Speaker 1: at home against BYU and Texas Tech goes undefeated and
- 1:53Speaker 1: you've got two, now Houston and Utah play this weekend,
- 1:56Speaker 1: so we'll see if we don't correct this with Willie
- 1:59Speaker 1: Fritz and them kind of throwing a wrench into things.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Utah wins at home against BYU, beats Houston this weekend,
- 2:06Speaker 1: and Texas Tech wins out. If you have two 12-0
- 2:10Speaker 1: teams going to the Big 12 title game, they both
- 2:13Speaker 1: have to make it in. And BYU, with an 11-1
- 2:17Speaker 1: record and a win against Notre Dame and their only
- 2:20Speaker 1: loss being on the road against a rival, which will
- 2:22Speaker 1: also be a top-five team in Utah, you cannot leave
- 2:26Speaker 1: them out either. I don't know who you leave out
- 2:29Speaker 1: in that scenario. Now, I know we play the game of,
- 2:32Speaker 1: is it more deserving? Is it resume? I don't know, man.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Is it who we think is the best? And it's
- 2:38Speaker 1: neither of those things. We just kind of go by
- 2:39Speaker 1: Vegas and put teams in. The committee can obviously do
- 2:42Speaker 1: whatever the heck they want. I don't know which of
- 2:44Speaker 1: those three teams you leave out. And I think you
- 2:45Speaker 1: got to put them all three in. Now, BYU has
- 2:48Speaker 1: to travel 2000 miles to UCF this weekend. Not that
- 2:51Speaker 1: I think they're going to lose, but they're only a
- 2:53Speaker 1: touchdown favorite there.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Had that thought as well.
- 2:55Speaker 1: You know, like there's Houston, Houston out there. Playing at Utah,
- 3:00Speaker 1: that could be a loss. This conversation could be moot really,
- 3:04Speaker 1: really quick by the time we get together next week.
- 3:06Speaker 1: But if chalk holds, I think the Big 12 is
- 3:10Speaker 1: putting three teams in this thing. So we'll see if
- 3:13Speaker 1: chalk holds is a very obvious statement that holds a
- 3:16Speaker 1: lot of weight in this conversation.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Sure. Yeah, I mean, I think.
- 3:23Speaker 3: It's a really interesting spot that we're in because– Notre
- 3:28Speaker 3: Dame is in trouble, man. I mean, they, they, they
- 3:31Speaker 3: are like, I think that we all just, everyone assumed like,
- 3:35Speaker 3: I think a lot of people assume they'd be BYU.
- 3:37Speaker 2: First of all, second of all, I think that everyone
- 3:40Speaker 2: kind of maybe.
- 3:44Speaker 3: Them quitting on the season last year and protesting, not
- 3:48Speaker 3: making the playoff. In my opinion, it created this perception
- 3:51Speaker 3: amongst casual fans and some media people that was like, we'll,
- 3:56Speaker 3: if they're outraged about this and they must've been really
- 3:59Speaker 3: good and they weren't, you know, like they weren't, I mean,
- 4:02Speaker 3: they weren't, they weren't a bad football team by any stretch.
- 4:04Speaker 3: I'm not saying that, but you look at Chris Felica,
- 4:08Speaker 3: the bear is, did some, some, some work on this.
- 4:14Speaker 3: I think yesterday or maybe Sunday yesterday. And since the
- 4:18Speaker 3: start of last year, their Notre Dame 16 wins have
- 4:21Speaker 3: come against teams that are a combined team. 26-91 versus
- 4:24Speaker 3: FBS opponents. That's a 400 winning percentage. And they're 32-78
- 4:30Speaker 3: versus P4 opponents. That's 290. So, under Marcus Freeman, Notre
- 4:38Speaker 3: Dame has five wins in the regular season against teams
- 4:41Speaker 3: which finished the season ranked. Two of those were against
- 4:44Speaker 3: service academies. The other three, USC last year, NC State
- 4:52Speaker 3: in 2023, Clemson in 2022. So I think that this
- 4:58Speaker 3: Notre Dame team, I'm just very, I mean, they don't
- 5:03Speaker 3: play anybody. Like if they don't beat Miami, they're not
- 5:07Speaker 3: getting into the playoff, in my opinion, because there's just
- 5:10Speaker 3: not a way for them to prove they're a good team.
- 5:13Speaker 3: And that's going to be their own doing because they
- 5:15Speaker 3: scheduled this way. But that opens the door. And then
- 5:20Speaker 3: if they do beat.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Miami, that, that helps the big 12 even more. Right.
- 5:24Speaker 2: So one way or the other, you have.
- 5:27Speaker 3: A situation that kind of slots BYU over Notre Dame,
- 5:33Speaker 3: as long as they have an equal amount of losses or, or,
- 5:38Speaker 3: or as long as BYU has, you know, one less loss,
- 5:41Speaker 3: I think the Notre Dame, and that creates an interesting
- 5:46Speaker 3: stack for everyone else. I am very curious, you know,
- 5:52Speaker 3: with Texas Tech, like what are they? I still don't
- 5:55Speaker 3: really feel like I know. I mean, they've had some
- 5:59Speaker 3: very interesting results. You know, like the Oregon State thing
- 6:04Speaker 3: I think has gotten better. But that win over Houston
- 6:07Speaker 3: looms very large in the mirror. And then they've got
- 6:10Speaker 3: the Brendan Sorsby Bowl this weekend against Cincinnati.
- 6:15Speaker 2: I think we could see a world.
- 6:19Speaker 3: I mean, Utah– I struggle with this because it's like, yeah,
- 6:25Speaker 3: they could get two.
- 6:26Speaker 2: And a half I think is the right over-under to
- 6:27Speaker 2: be talking about with this league.
- 6:30Speaker 3: But is Utah-Houston not kind of an elimination game on
- 6:36Speaker 3: Saturday night?
- 6:37Speaker 2: I mean, like even if they both come out of
- 6:41Speaker 2: that at six and one because it's Houston that wins.
- 6:47Speaker 2: it feels like Utah has.
- 6:47Speaker 3: Got to be BYU to get back into the playoff
- 6:50Speaker 3: conversation or their toes. Cause they, you know, I mean,
- 6:53Speaker 3: they just struggled with Colorado. They've had some, I mean,
- 6:58Speaker 3: the Arkansas one was nice. They beat the crap out
- 7:00Speaker 3: of Arkansas, but I just don't know. They've got enough
- 7:03Speaker 3: left on the schedule to really make a huge difference
- 7:05Speaker 3: in the eyes of the committee members.
- 7:10Speaker 1: I yes, Houston, Utah is an eliminator game. But if
- 7:16Speaker 1: you and it becomes a little more tricky, I think
- 7:19Speaker 1: if Houston wins that. But again, kind of that same
- 7:23Speaker 1: scenario would be if Houston if Houston won, then the
- 7:32Speaker 1: Utah is Houston's. artificial floor or maybe not artificial, but
- 7:36Speaker 1: they're their floor. Sure. And you just swap Houston, you know,
- 7:40Speaker 1: Houston and Utah, because then Houston has a really good
- 7:43Speaker 1: loss to Texas tech and a really good win against Utah.
- 7:46Speaker 1: And so if they go to the big 12 championship,
- 7:49Speaker 1: you know, say in that scenario, then, then you're looking
- 7:52Speaker 1: at a Houston team. That's 11 and one at the
- 7:53Speaker 1: end of the year, say BYU beats Utah on the road.
- 7:57Speaker 1: And so that's your 10 and two team in the
- 7:58Speaker 1: big 12. Then again, it's BYU and Texas tech for
- 8:01Speaker 1: the title game. They both have to go. And, Maybe
- 8:04Speaker 1: the committee would leave out an 11-1 Houston with a
- 8:08Speaker 1: win over Utah, but I think it'd be tough. I
- 8:10Speaker 1: think what we've seen the committee do is say, hey,
- 8:12Speaker 1: we're fine putting a 10-2 Bama in over an 11-1 BYU.
- 8:18Speaker 1: I don't know that I have enough faith in the
- 8:19Speaker 1: committee to say, yeah, we'll put a 9-3 SEC team
- 8:24Speaker 1: in over an 11-1 Big 12 team. I'm not saying
- 8:26Speaker 1: they won't. I'm not saying they shouldn't. That might be
- 8:29Speaker 1: a bridge too far. I think the strength of schedule
- 8:34Speaker 1: gets you one win. I don't know that the strength
- 8:36Speaker 1: of schedule is going to get you two wins in
- 8:38Speaker 1: the committee's eyes. Now, deserving, we could have debates all
- 8:42Speaker 1: day about who deserves more, but I'm just talking like
- 8:47Speaker 1: what the committee will actually do. I don't think the
- 8:49Speaker 1: committee is going to say, I just feel like 9-3
- 8:52Speaker 1: versus 11-1 is just a really far bridge for them
- 8:57Speaker 1: to jump. And we can all agree, 9-3 Texas, I
- 9:01Speaker 1: would take on a neutral field over 11-1 Houston.
- 9:06Speaker 3: Well, I think 9-3 Texas gets in over an 11-1
- 9:10Speaker 3: Houston because 9-3 Texas is going to have that win
- 9:13Speaker 3: over Ohio State.
- 9:15Speaker 1: And if Florida keeps getting better, if the rivalry will
- 9:19Speaker 1: get kind of excused, Florida finishes ranked. But I'm not
- 9:23Speaker 1: completely confident in that, in that 9-3 versus 11-1.
- 9:27Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean, I think that you, you look at the,
- 9:30Speaker 3: the sec at this point, um, I feel like anybody
- 9:35Speaker 3: that finishes 10 and two is probably in right.
- 9:39Speaker 2: Like that, that, that seems probably legit.
- 9:42Speaker 1: It seems likely.
- 9:43Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah. But, uh, and past that, I'm with you.
- 9:50Speaker 3: Like the nine and three argument gets real shaky and I'm,
- 9:56Speaker 3: I'm curious how they'd handle that I do know that
- 9:59Speaker 3: they added this, this new metric that's supposed to take
- 10:03Speaker 3: more account of strength of schedule and kind of help
- 10:07Speaker 3: the sec. It seemed like was the way it was
- 10:09Speaker 3: explained and pitched. But again, like a two loss gap
- 10:15Speaker 3: is something that is unprecedented.
- 10:18Speaker 2: It's never happened.
- 10:19Speaker 3: We've never seen the committee really apply strength of schedule
- 10:23Speaker 3: or strength of record in the ways that you and
- 10:27Speaker 3: I would sit here and apply it if we were
- 10:29Speaker 3: talking about, hey, who do I think is better based
- 10:32Speaker 3: on results?
- 10:33Speaker 2: So I'm very fascinated. I think that.
- 10:40Speaker 3: It's going to be a very interesting month of December
- 10:46Speaker 3: for Greg Sankey if– He essentially ramrodded the entire league
- 10:52Speaker 3: on going to nine because he swore that him and
- 10:55Speaker 3: Tony Petitti had an agreement to immediately change the playoff
- 10:59Speaker 3: to 16. They listened to their commissioner and their commissioner
- 11:05Speaker 3: got the rug pulled out from under him by the
- 11:07Speaker 3: Big Ten commissioner and now all of a sudden you're
- 11:11Speaker 3: standing there and you've only got 12 spots and these
- 11:14Speaker 3: SEC teams are They do have gauntlets. Say what you
- 11:19Speaker 3: will about SEC bias and all of that, but out
- 11:22Speaker 3: of conference, the SEC won these games.
- 11:25Speaker 2: Mississippi State beat the dog shit out of Minnesota.
- 11:29Speaker 3: Texas beat Ohio State and now looks very troubled in
- 11:33Speaker 3: league play. Hey, one play here in the Ohio State game, sure,
- 11:38Speaker 3: it could have gone differently, but the SEC has those
- 11:41Speaker 3: wins on their resume, and that's what I'm curious about,
- 11:44Speaker 3: how the the committee is going to handle.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Because if this was last.
- 11:48Speaker 3: Year or maybe the year before where the SEC had
- 11:52Speaker 3: some good non-con results, like last year Mississippi State beating
- 11:56Speaker 3: Arizona State was a good result for the SEC. But
- 11:59Speaker 3: the cumulative of Texas going to Columbus and losing and
- 12:03Speaker 3: some of that, it was not like this year for
- 12:07Speaker 3: the SEC where they've looked pretty dominant outside.
- 12:10Speaker 2: Of their own league.
- 12:12Speaker 3: It'll be interesting to see if the ACC– can take
- 12:15Speaker 3: some games off of them in the last week of
- 12:18Speaker 3: the year. Cause like you do have Kentucky Louisville, Georgia,
- 12:21Speaker 3: Georgia tech, South Carolina, Clemson, that could be large, but.
- 12:28Speaker 2: You're to sit here and assume that a nine and.
- 12:31Speaker 3: Three sec team, other than Texas has a realistic shot
- 12:35Speaker 3: of getting in. You're assuming that a lot more chaos
- 12:38Speaker 3: is coming for all the leagues.
- 12:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 12:40Speaker 2: Or you're assuming that this committee is going to do
- 12:43Speaker 2: something that.
- 12:44Speaker 3: No ranking body in the history of college football has
- 12:48Speaker 3: ever done.
- 12:49Speaker 2: Right. And not group teams by the lost column.
- 12:52Speaker 1: I'll get right back to the clip in just a moment.
- 12:54Speaker 1: But first I want to give you a couple of picks. Now,
- 12:56Speaker 1: if you want to get all the picks, you got
- 12:57Speaker 1: to go watch the live show, the prize picks app,
- 13:00Speaker 1: all new users there play $ 5, get 150 in lineups instantly.
- 13:04Speaker 1: If you use code HMA and win your first $ 5 lineup,
- 13:08Speaker 1: Give me the more on Trinidad's passing yards at 243.5.
- 13:13Speaker 1: Just one yard away from that, 244.5. Give me the
- 13:16Speaker 1: less on Arch Manning. Now, I actually like Texas to
- 13:19Speaker 1: win this game, but I'm going to take the reverse
- 13:23Speaker 1: of what many people might think on the passing totals.
- 13:25Speaker 1: We also picked Arch's passing touchdowns. We took Kiwan Lacy.
- 13:29Speaker 1: We took Trinidad's passing touchdowns, but I'm not telling you
- 13:31Speaker 1: what those picks are. You got to go watch the
- 13:32Speaker 1: live show to check it out. That's on College Football Addiction.
- 13:35Speaker 1: We appreciate you for watching. Make sure you're on the
- 13:38Speaker 1: PrizePix app. Again, that code is HMA, and we'll see
- 13:40Speaker 1: you guys real soon. I think it also, again, this
- 13:44Speaker 1: is what I hate about the committee, and we did
- 13:45Speaker 1: so much on this last year.
- 13:47Speaker 2: I think, I.
- 13:50Speaker 1: Don't, again, if their logic at the end of the
- 13:55Speaker 1: day is Texas would win on a neutral field at
- 14:00Speaker 1: 9-3 over an 11-1 Houston team, I'm okay with that.
- 14:06Speaker 1: I understand that logic. I'm fine. I can reason that
- 14:09Speaker 1: in my mind and say, if that's what you want
- 14:11Speaker 1: to do, then that's fine. I would also try to
- 14:15Speaker 1: point to the fact of, okay, then why are we
- 14:19Speaker 1: playing games? Because these games are scheduled so far out.
- 14:23Speaker 1: These teams are, and Congress is trying to keep these
- 14:26Speaker 1: teams from getting into other conferences like How far down
- 14:30Speaker 1: that path do you have to get before you say
- 14:33Speaker 1: the games don't matter? And again, I would agree with
- 14:36Speaker 1: you that I, I think Texas at nine and three
- 14:39Speaker 1: is probably going, I mean, unless arch has an arch
- 14:42Speaker 1: type game, but let's just assume the best Texas is
- 14:45Speaker 1: going to probably be an 11 and one team, but
- 14:48Speaker 1: I can also probably make that same argument and say like, Hey,
- 14:50Speaker 1: I would probably take Texas over an 11 and one BYU.
- 14:54Speaker 1: And so we're not willing to move the goalposts that much.
- 14:58Speaker 1: So where do we draw that line of, and again,
- 15:02Speaker 1: that's part of the ambiguity of our sport is it is,
- 15:05Speaker 1: it is more of a beauty pageant and less of a,
- 15:07Speaker 1: here's how you qualify. You're in the NFC South. You
- 15:09Speaker 1: win more games than the other three teams you get in.
- 15:11Speaker 1: So I understand that, but I don't, I, part of
- 15:14Speaker 1: me does not love that. Not because it's an sec thing,
- 15:17Speaker 1: not because it's a Texas thing, not because it's an
- 15:18Speaker 1: arch thing, not because I'm anti big 12 and none
- 15:21Speaker 1: of that. It just, If Texas finishes as the sixth
- 15:25Speaker 1: best team in the SEC and is 9-3 because they
- 15:29Speaker 1: beat Ohio State because of a miraculous fourth quarter, just
- 15:32Speaker 1: a great fourth quarter, then, man, there has to be
- 15:37Speaker 1: some level of earning it, you know? Not necessarily what
- 15:40Speaker 1: you would just do on a field. Listen, I mean,
- 15:45Speaker 1: Texas is 8-4. Would you... would you probably still take
- 15:49Speaker 1: Texas at eight and four if there are two losses
- 15:51Speaker 1: or close losses to LSU and tennis in, in over
- 15:56Speaker 1: an 11 and one team, like would Vegas take them
- 15:59Speaker 1: at four?
- 16:00Speaker 2: And so like, that's not, that's not the same question though.
- 16:03Speaker 3: I mean, like, you know, I mean, like, are you the,
- 16:10Speaker 3: the playoff still is trying to find, they're still ranking
- 16:16Speaker 3: teams by a resume. It's not a pure power rating.
- 16:20Speaker 3: It's not a spread ranking. But if you look at
- 16:24Speaker 3: Texas' schedule, for them to get to 9-3, they're going
- 16:29Speaker 3: to have to beat two out of three of Ole Miss, Missouri, LSU,
- 16:37Speaker 3: and then sweep Mississippi State, Arkansas, Texas A & M.
- 16:42Speaker 2: Yeah. And I know that, like, And hey, by.
- 16:45Speaker 3: The way, by Halloween, Mississippi State could have Camario back,
- 16:48Speaker 3: and Mississippi State took Texas to overtime last year. And Arkansas,
- 16:55Speaker 3: are they good? No, but they just beat Vandy, who
- 17:00Speaker 3: was six points away from beating Auburn and wouldn't have
- 17:03Speaker 3: lost that game if they hadn't had a punt blocked
- 17:06Speaker 3: in return for a touchdown, and then Auburn just beat Georgia.
- 17:09Speaker 3: So stranger things have happened than the idea that Arkansas
- 17:12Speaker 3: could beat Texas. Then you get A & M.
- 17:19Speaker 2: I'm interested. I'm intrigued.
- 17:21Speaker 3: I do think a 9-3 Texas with a win over
- 17:25Speaker 3: Ohio State and a win.
- 17:28Speaker 2: Over Ole Miss or LSU or Missouri. Two of those three.
- 17:36Speaker 2: Who are BYU's Three best wins, right?
- 17:46Speaker 1: If they run the table, it would be Notre Dame, Utah,
- 17:51Speaker 1: and Arizona's ranked right now. So I think Arizona would
- 17:53Speaker 1: be your third one.
- 17:54Speaker 3: So would you take Notre Dame, Utah, Arizona over Ohio State,
- 18:02Speaker 3: let's say Missouri LSU? Let's say they lose to Ole
- 18:05Speaker 3: Miss and they run off five in a row to
- 18:09Speaker 3: dramatically get into the conversation.
- 18:12Speaker 1: I would say Notre Dame and Ohio State are probably
- 18:16Speaker 1: fairly close to canceling each other out. You're splitting hairs.
- 18:21Speaker 2: And they beat Tennessee.
- 18:23Speaker 1: Sorry, I keep forgetting that.
- 18:27Speaker 2: It's a lot of good wins, man.
- 18:28Speaker 1: Yeah, really good wins. I guess if we had this
- 18:32Speaker 1: model that measured wins and losses and assigned an algorithm
- 18:36Speaker 1: to it and went ahead and used that for our
- 18:40Speaker 1: 24 teams now, It could help us quantify it. What's
- 18:45Speaker 1: hard is, how do you factor Texas' three losses versus
- 18:49Speaker 1: BYU's zero? Now, BYU didn't have opportunities for losses.
- 18:53Speaker 2: Well, BYU would be in no matter what. Yeah, yeah, BYU.
- 18:56Speaker 1: So Utah's, right? Or Houston's if they're 11-1. How do you... Now, admittedly,
- 19:03Speaker 1: Utah or Texas Tech or Houston or any of these
- 19:06Speaker 1: other teams, they didn't have opportunities for losses. They didn't... Right.
- 19:11Speaker 1: That's so... How do you factor that in? How do
- 19:14Speaker 1: you factor in one loss versus Texas tech and then
- 19:17Speaker 1: a bunch of cupcakes versus three losses to good teams?
- 19:22Speaker 2: Do you want to hear my conspiracy theory on this?
- 19:24Speaker 1: Let's go.
- 19:26Speaker 3: Well, I think like they're, they're going to go to
- 19:28Speaker 3: 24 and they're trying to sell going to 24 as
- 19:31Speaker 3: a way to get teams back into playing each other
- 19:35Speaker 3: in marquee games out of conference and to kind of
- 19:38Speaker 3: get the scheduling back on track in the first month
- 19:41Speaker 3: of the season in this sport. The best way to
- 19:45Speaker 3: do that would be to start punishing some teams for
- 19:48Speaker 3: playing crap. out-of-conference schedules. The Big 12, I have some
- 19:54Speaker 3: compassion for because they are who they are and they
- 19:58Speaker 3: don't have a lot of great teams, if I'm being truthful.
- 20:02Speaker 3: Houston played Oregon State, right? I'm not making that up, correct?
- 20:07Speaker 2: Yeah. Am I making that up?
- 20:09Speaker 1: Yeah, they put them back-to-back weeks, I think, with Texas.
- 20:10Speaker 1: I think they sandwiched the Texas Tech game with them.
- 20:13Speaker 3: Yeah, well, like, that's a good team. That's an Oregon
- 20:17Speaker 3: State team that could end up being the 12th team in,
- 20:19Speaker 3: you know, the G5 rep in the playoff, right? So
- 20:21Speaker 3: it's like, that's more than.
- 20:28Speaker 2: A lot of– I don't know if.
- 20:30Speaker 3: They went on the road to Georgia Southern for some reason, but, like,
- 20:32Speaker 3: that's more than a lot of these teams in the
- 20:36Speaker 3: Big 12 are doing is to play in Oregon State.
- 20:41Speaker 1: Yeah, BYU had the Notre Dame. Utah had Arkansas, which
- 20:45Speaker 1: not great, but also scheduled years in advance. No, that's
- 20:49Speaker 1: a good scheduled win.
- 20:52Speaker 2: I mean, that's a good schedule.
- 20:54Speaker 3: But I would say Oregon State and Arkansas are probably
- 20:56Speaker 3: kind of proxies for one another.
- 21:00Speaker 1: It's better than some of these teams that get played.
- 21:03Speaker 2: Yeah, that's my point.
- 21:05Speaker 3: And I think if I look at Texas Tech's schedule,
- 21:08Speaker 3: you know, what, what is their best out of conference opponent?
- 21:13Speaker 3: I guess it's, it's also Oregon state, but you know,
- 21:18Speaker 3: I mean, you, you put Abilene Christian and Sam Houston
- 21:21Speaker 3: around that, and then you're going to go.
- 21:25Speaker 1: And then they, they don't play BYU. They don't play Utah.
- 21:29Speaker 1: But they don't play BYU in Utah.
- 21:31Speaker 3: Maybe, maybe it is not their fault, but, I think
- 21:38Speaker 3: Petiti's big 10 office, like very, very intentionally scheduled some,
- 21:44Speaker 3: some of the contenders to miss each other over the
- 21:49Speaker 3: first couple of years of this model. And I think
- 21:51Speaker 3: that other people maybe started catching onto that. So make
- 21:56Speaker 3: them pay the price for.
- 21:58Speaker 2: For that.
- 21:58Speaker 1: Like, well, that was good. That, that leads pretty well
- 22:01Speaker 1: into this. So we talked about the big 12, the
- 22:03Speaker 1: teams that can theoretically make it what the, what the
- 22:06Speaker 1: three team scenario is that they could get three in.
- 22:10Speaker 1: Let's go through each of the other conferences real fast.
- 22:13Speaker 1: I don't want to, I don't want to include every
- 22:16Speaker 1: team that's mathematically still alive. Cause yes, if Florida goes
- 22:19Speaker 1: on a run and sure wins out, then yes, they
- 22:22Speaker 1: can make it, but I don't want to use them.
- 22:24Speaker 1: Who do you actually think can make it based on
- 22:28Speaker 1: the remaining schedules in the sec? Cause to me, it
- 22:30Speaker 1: feels like Georgia Ole Miss Georgia, Bama and LSU. And
- 22:36Speaker 1: then Kentucky would really have to, I mean, they'd have
- 22:39Speaker 1: to pull a couple of rabbits out to, to get
- 22:41Speaker 1: it done. It is possible they're on the fringe, but
- 22:44Speaker 1: then like Auburn technically alive, they'd have to do miraculous
- 22:48Speaker 1: things down the stretch, Florida, technically alive. They've got to
- 22:50Speaker 1: go beat Georgia in Atlanta and then Kentucky and then Oklahoma.
- 22:54Speaker 1: And then we'll, I would talk about them a little more,
- 22:56Speaker 1: but yeah, in the sec in Texas, right at nine
- 23:00Speaker 1: and three, Texas can get to nine and three that
- 23:02Speaker 1: there's our, there's our one nine and three. Texas getting
- 23:05Speaker 1: to 9-3 will probably eliminate LSU or Ole Miss. Who
- 23:09Speaker 1: do I think is alive?
- 23:15Speaker 2: Tennessee can make it. They've got South Carolina, Kentucky, A
- 23:18Speaker 2: & M, LSU, Vandy left.
- 23:20Speaker 3: If they win, it's South Carolina.
- 23:25Speaker 1: They can afford the LSU loss.
- 23:26Speaker 3: They can afford to lose to LSU and probably still
- 23:29Speaker 3: get in as long as Oklahoma doesn't.
- 23:33Speaker 2: Fall apart. Or I'm sorry, as long as Alabama doesn't
- 23:38Speaker 2: fall apart. Alabama can obviously still make it.
- 23:42Speaker 3: I mean, if you look at the rest of their schedule,
- 23:45Speaker 3: I know that like, yeah, they've got two losses already.
- 23:48Speaker 2: It's week seven. That's scary.
- 23:49Speaker 3: But they get A & M. Then they get a
- 23:52Speaker 3: bye week. And then it's LSU, Vandy, SoCon Saturday, and Auburn.
- 24:00Speaker 2: So like, they.
- 24:01Speaker 3: Really have to split lsu a and m and win
- 24:06Speaker 3: the iron ball at this point yeah i think that's
- 24:08Speaker 3: doable i think they'll be in the playoff.
- 24:11Speaker 1: All miss needs to split texas georgia win everything else
- 24:15Speaker 1: yeah it feels like they're.
- 24:16Speaker 3: Which is which i think which i think actually they
- 24:20Speaker 3: have a tougher path because a they got to go
- 24:23Speaker 3: on the road to texas and then they got to
- 24:24Speaker 3: play georgia um And they got an Auburn sandwich between
- 24:29Speaker 3: those two. Like they don't get a buy before either
- 24:31Speaker 3: of those games, which is a big deal in this league.
- 24:33Speaker 3: They already took their buy way back on week five.
- 24:36Speaker 3: So they're going to be pretty beat up by the
- 24:37Speaker 3: time they get to Georgia.
- 24:39Speaker 2: Oklahoma on the road is not an easy task. That's
- 24:44Speaker 2: a good defense. I know that John Mateer is John Mateer, but.
- 24:49Speaker 3: I've watched Ole Miss lose those types of games my
- 24:52Speaker 3: entire adult life.
- 24:53Speaker 2: Okay.
- 24:54Speaker 3: Um, And then they go to Mississippi State at the end,
- 24:57Speaker 3: which if Camario and Bothwell and everybody is still engaged there,
- 25:02Speaker 3: that's a chaos situation, right?
- 25:05Speaker 2: I mean, they do get them at home.
- 25:06Speaker 3: Yeah. So they're in. I mean, like, they're alive. Texas
- 25:13Speaker 3: is alive, like we said. So what, Alabama, Georgia? Yeah.
- 25:20Speaker 2: Tennessee, Ole Miss, Texas.
- 25:23Speaker 3: I think LSU is obviously still alive.
- 25:25Speaker 1: Yeah. The LSU, Tennessee, Alabama. A lot of these will
- 25:34Speaker 1: work themselves out.
- 25:36Speaker 2: They will.
- 25:36Speaker 1: Somebody's taking another L between Texas and LSU. And then
- 25:40Speaker 1: somebody's taking another L between Ole Miss and Texas. And
- 25:43Speaker 1: then somebody's taking another L between Tennessee and LSU. And
- 25:47Speaker 1: then Bama, LSU as well. I didn't mention that one.
- 25:49Speaker 1: So some of that will work itself out. Like there,
- 25:51Speaker 1: there will be some eliminator games coming up here in
- 25:53Speaker 1: the next couple of weeks, you know, in November. So
- 25:58Speaker 1: we'll see.
- 25:59Speaker 3: But like, let's talk about Kentucky seriously here because they
- 26:03Speaker 3: got Vandy this week.
- 26:04Speaker 2: Then they get a buy and they go on the
- 26:07Speaker 2: road to Tennessee.
- 26:09Speaker 3: So let's say they lose Tennessee. Can they close out
- 26:13Speaker 3: and win three straight over Florida at Missouri and Louisville?
- 26:17Speaker 2: Cause like, I don't think.
- 26:18Speaker 1: That's, I don't think that's impossible. No. They need to
- 26:24Speaker 1: win two out of three against Tennessee, Florida, and Missouri.
- 26:28Speaker 1: Two of those are on the road. Tennessee's a different
- 26:32Speaker 1: animal at home, as we've all learned. So that'll be tough.
- 26:36Speaker 1: But they get it coming off a bye.
- 26:38Speaker 2: And you know that somebody's going to.
- 26:41Speaker 3: At least two of these teams are going to win
- 26:44Speaker 3: one of these kind of swing games that.
- 26:45Speaker 2: We're talking about here. Yeah.
- 26:47Speaker 1: We're not talking about Missouri.
- 26:48Speaker 2: But like.
- 26:51Speaker 2: Yeah. It's like Missouri for somebody. Yeah, absolutely.
- 26:56Speaker 1: Or, I mean, you know, and there's the doomsday scenario too,
- 27:00Speaker 1: where they all just do what has happened through the
- 27:02Speaker 1: first part of the season where they all just beat
- 27:04Speaker 1: each other. And then you're left with a three loss
- 27:07Speaker 1: sec champion, you know, like, I don't think that's happening.
- 27:10Speaker 2: It's not impossible though, man.
- 27:11Speaker 1: You or, or the team that, you know, I'd say
- 27:15Speaker 1: Georgia has, you know, certainly the most confidence that people
- 27:19Speaker 1: have is, is in Georgia. Georgia could lose to Ole Miss.
- 27:23Speaker 1: That's on the road, right? And then from there, maybe
- 27:27Speaker 1: Georgia still goes to the SEC championship. And a two-loss
- 27:29Speaker 1: Georgia beats a three-loss runner-up.
- 27:33Speaker 3: I don't think they're going to make anybody pay for
- 27:35Speaker 3: losing the SEC title game.
- 27:37Speaker 1: I don't either. I just wonder where that three-loss team
- 27:39Speaker 1: is going into the SEC title.
- 27:41Speaker 3: Sure, sure.
- 27:41Speaker 1: You know, is that.
- 27:43Speaker 2: Yeah, maybe they can make it in by beating a
- 27:46Speaker 2: team like Georgia. So.
- 27:49Speaker 1: The SEC is still really wide open. It'll figure itself out.
- 27:52Speaker 1: The big 10 is really interesting.
- 27:54Speaker 2: Well, one other thing I just, I want to say
- 27:55Speaker 2: real quick, the team that's in trouble here is LSU. They,
- 28:00Speaker 2: they have the toughest, just got the Alabama, Texas, Tennessee.
- 28:04Speaker 1: And we already talked about the Auburn game this weekend,
- 28:07Speaker 1: which isn't, isn't a guarantee. It's not a lock. I
- 28:09Speaker 1: think they win, but certainly not a lock.
- 28:12Speaker 2: Stranger things have happened for sure.
- 28:14Speaker 1: Within the last four days. Like the big 10 is interesting.
- 28:19Speaker 1: I think Indiana is relatively fine because I like them
- 28:25Speaker 1: to go beat Michigan. I do like them to beat USC,
- 28:28Speaker 1: that game in Bloomington. I think they're fine. Oregon not dead.
- 28:35Speaker 1: UCLA's path is right there. I don't trust USC enough.
- 28:41Speaker 1: And Ohio State, without saying, is interesting down the stretch.
- 28:47Speaker 1: They have.
- 28:48Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, absolutely. They have.
- 28:49Speaker 1: They have the game against Oregon. They have the game
- 28:52Speaker 1: in the big house or no, no, that's, I think
- 28:54Speaker 1: that's at home. But they have the game against Michigan
- 28:57Speaker 1: at the end of the year. I would still say
- 28:59Speaker 1: Ohio state makes it. I think Indiana makes it. And
- 29:02Speaker 1: then does UCLA get in would be my question. Oregon's
- 29:06Speaker 1: still very much alive. If they could beat Ohio state
- 29:10Speaker 1: is a second Ohio state loss without their quarterback. Like what,
- 29:13Speaker 1: you know, again, the precedent exists.
- 29:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 29:17Speaker 1: What is the committee?
- 29:18Speaker 2: Are we even sure he's capable of coming back this year?
- 29:20Speaker 2: Cause I'm not.
- 29:21Speaker 1: Yeah. If he doesn't come back and they take a
- 29:23Speaker 1: second loss to Oregon, what does the committee do? Right.
- 29:29Speaker 1: I don't, I don't have a great answer. I don't,
- 29:31Speaker 1: I don't know, but what if they take a third loss?
- 29:35Speaker 1: You know, I don't think they will, but I don't
- 29:38Speaker 1: think it's outside of the realm of possibility. Yeah. So
- 29:43Speaker 1: the big 10 is interesting. The ACC is Miami and
- 29:46Speaker 1: everybody else can wake, make it. If we go to
- 29:49Speaker 1: the ACC, they're not getting the respect yet. And I'm
- 29:51Speaker 1: interested to see what the committee does. If it goes
- 29:54Speaker 1: to the ACC championship, That'll include a close loss to Miami.
- 29:59Speaker 1: That'll include a win over Louisville. That'll include a win
- 30:01Speaker 1: over SMU right now, who is ranked.
- 30:04Speaker 3: They still will need help, though. They need some disaster
- 30:10Speaker 3: scenarios to happen, I think, in the Big Ten and SEC.
- 30:15Speaker 2: But hey, I think Wake's capable of beating Miami. They
- 30:18Speaker 2: almost beat them the first time. Look, man, I know
- 30:21Speaker 2: Miami is.
- 30:24Speaker 3: Number one in the country now and all of that,
- 30:26Speaker 3: but Miami is not a dominant football team. Every time
- 30:29Speaker 3: they play anybody that's got a pulse and that, you know,
- 30:33Speaker 3: can hold the ball enough to wear out their overweight
- 30:35Speaker 3: pass rushers. They, they start to fold.
- 30:39Speaker 2: They struggle. They struggle late in games.
- 30:42Speaker 3: And Malachi Tony is the best football player in the country,
- 30:46Speaker 3: maybe for my money pound for pound. But if you
- 30:50Speaker 3: can make them do something else, uh, and you can
- 30:53Speaker 3: get Darien Mintz off his first read, then a lot
- 30:55Speaker 3: of things fall apart for them. So it's not outside
- 30:59Speaker 3: the realm of possibility that Miami could, you know, lose
- 31:04Speaker 3: to Notre Dame and then Wake knocks Miami out of
- 31:06Speaker 3: the playoff by winning the ACC and turning them into
- 31:09Speaker 3: a two.
- 31:09Speaker 2: I mean, like it's– there's a lot of scenarios on
- 31:12Speaker 2: the table still. I just think.
- 31:16Speaker 3: Because the ACC kind of got the shaft last year,
- 31:20Speaker 3: I could see the committee trying to like write that
- 31:23Speaker 3: wrong a little bit, potentially.
- 31:25Speaker 2: If to me, it would feel like if, if somebody in.
- 31:30Speaker 3: The big 10, like who's alive in the big 10, realistically, let's.
- 31:35Speaker 1: Be honest, Ohio state, Indiana, UCLA, UCLA, UCLA, Oregon, Michigan alive.
- 31:43Speaker 2: No.
- 31:43Speaker 1: Cause they'll, they'll take another, I think I'll take another
- 31:45Speaker 1: loss this weekend. So I'm, I'm chalking that up already. Um,
- 31:49Speaker 1: USC is technically alive.
- 31:51Speaker 2: What if USC beats Ohio State with no sand?
- 31:56Speaker 1: I think that game is a lot more interesting.
- 31:58Speaker 2: It's definitely a lot more interesting.
- 31:59Speaker 1: If Ohio State loses to Oregon and USC, they're out.
- 32:04Speaker 1: Only they can get in at 9-3.
- 32:06Speaker 2: Look, hear me out. Can Northwestern... I think Northwestern can
- 32:15Speaker 2: win out. I know that's crazy. I know it's bold, but.
- 32:23Speaker 3: I would actually say that, I mean, I guess Indiana
- 32:28Speaker 3: and Ohio State have kind of clearly separated as one, two,
- 32:30Speaker 3: but they've been the third best.
- 32:31Speaker 2: Team in the Big Ten.
- 32:33Speaker 1: Better than UCLA?
- 32:37Speaker 2: I guess that's tough, but I'm more impressed with what
- 32:40Speaker 2: they've done.
- 32:41Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 32:42Speaker 3: That 29-23 loss to Indiana told me way more than
- 32:44Speaker 3: anything I've learned about UCLA.
- 32:46Speaker 1: If they, I mean, if they beat Oregon on Halloween.
- 32:49Speaker 2: They can do it.
- 32:50Speaker 1: And then beat Iowa, which is a ranked win. I mean,
- 32:52Speaker 1: does Iowa out? You know, if we're doing all this.
- 32:55Speaker 2: No.
- 32:55Speaker 3: Well, I'm just, but, I mean, realistically, I think Iowa, no,
- 33:01Speaker 3: they're not out. I mean, they're 15 in the country,
- 33:03Speaker 3: and this is a 12-team playoff. Like, the thing about
- 33:04Speaker 3: a 12-team playoff is they've got to put 12 teams in.
- 33:08Speaker 1: It. If Northwestern beats Oregon, Iowa, and Ohio State, then, yeah,
- 33:11Speaker 1: I mean, they're obviously, because at that point, they're beating
- 33:14Speaker 1: Minnesota and Illinois to finish it. So Ohio state without saying,
- 33:19Speaker 1: I asked.
- 33:21Speaker 3: That's the thing is like, I think that the, the
- 33:23Speaker 3: Julian say in injury news of any program in terms
- 33:27Speaker 3: of like, how does this impact their future? It probably
- 33:30Speaker 3: impact aside from Ohio state. Obviously I think it impacts
- 33:33Speaker 3: Northwestern the most because the path for them just opened up.
- 33:38Speaker 2: And by the.
- 33:38Speaker 3: Way, I'm not entirely sure that even if they did
- 33:43Speaker 3: lose to Oregon, if they could, if they could split
- 33:46Speaker 3: the Oregon Ohio state deal and finish 10 and two
- 33:51Speaker 3: with that win over Iowa, I'm not sure they don't
- 33:53Speaker 3: get in at that point.
- 33:56Speaker 1: I think it is. I mean, you look at UCLA
- 33:58Speaker 1: schedule for the rest of the way and they're doing
- 34:01Speaker 1: this with a backup quarterback right now.
- 34:04Speaker 2: That's the, that's the thing that scares me about UCLA,
- 34:07Speaker 2: but I mean.
- 34:08Speaker 1: Hey, if they go 11 and one, can you leave,
- 34:12Speaker 1: can you leave them out? I don't know that you
- 34:17Speaker 1: can leave an 11-1 power conference team out.
- 34:22Speaker 2: Look, I know they do have the backup quarterback. I'm
- 34:24Speaker 2: not confident that they... I think they probably do.
- 34:29Speaker 3: I think 11-1 is more likely than 10-2 at this point,
- 34:31Speaker 3: looking at that schedule.
- 34:32Speaker 2: They've got Michigan State, then Nevada, then Minnesota. Could be tricky. Cold.
- 34:40Speaker 2: California boys going to the cold.
- 34:42Speaker 1: It's true.
- 34:42Speaker 2: Illinois could be tricky. Friday night, 9 p.m., Fox.
- 34:46Speaker 3: That seems like the kiss of death for Big Ten teams.
- 34:49Speaker 2: And then at Michigan and then USC.
- 34:54Speaker 3: I mean, like USC, I just don't know if they
- 34:56Speaker 3: can score with USC with a backup quarterback. But that
- 35:02Speaker 3: backup quarterback is going to be a real season by
- 35:03Speaker 3: the time they get to late November.
- 35:06Speaker 1: So I'm not ruling it out. I– am interested to
- 35:13Speaker 1: continue to follow this. We've been on for a little while,
- 35:15Speaker 1: but give me a, give me a 90 second, 2014
- 35:18Speaker 1: playoff thought. And let's get out of here.
- 35:20Speaker 2: I mean, it sucks.
- 35:22Speaker 1: Like I only needed three seconds. Yeah.
- 35:26Speaker 3: Look, all of this drama that we're talking about, like
- 35:29Speaker 3: there's going to be a lot of hearts, absolutely broken.
- 35:33Speaker 3: And they're in most cases, they're going to be probably
- 35:38Speaker 3: like very good teams instead of great teams that get
- 35:41Speaker 3: their hearts broken.
- 35:42Speaker 2: But still, I.
- 35:45Speaker 3: Think college football is at its best when everyone gets
- 35:49Speaker 3: to gather around the campfire and, like, point and laugh
- 35:53Speaker 3: at a big brand, whether that's Georgia losing to Auburn
- 35:57Speaker 3: or Ohio State getting upset or Texas or.
- 36:01Speaker 2: Whoever, right?
- 36:02Speaker 3: And I think, like, when you get to 24, these
- 36:07Speaker 3: upsets of these big brands– they don't really have enough
- 36:12Speaker 3: meaning to ruin their season anymore.
- 36:16Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 36:17Speaker 2: I mean, look, hey, I already thought that we.
- 36:20Speaker 3: Kind of screwed up the regular season when I watched
- 36:23Speaker 3: Ohio State lose to a 6-5 rival on the last
- 36:25Speaker 3: weekend of the season and go on and win a
- 36:28Speaker 3: national title. To me, that was sort of the moment
- 36:31Speaker 3: that the sport that I grew up with and loved died.
- 36:34Speaker 2: But this is a whole other level of.
- 36:38Speaker 3: Really kind of rendering– some of these results moot and
- 36:42Speaker 3: turning it into a, a one month tournament.
- 36:46Speaker 2: Like a six week sport, which sucks.
- 36:48Speaker 1: I think what so many people have have waxed poetically
- 36:52Speaker 1: on is when pay has talked about, you know, we're
- 36:55Speaker 1: taking the importance off of Texas, Ohio state, and we're
- 36:58Speaker 1: putting it onto Iowa, Nebraska, the last week of the year,
- 37:01Speaker 1: which is fine. That's a good point. What I didn't
- 37:03Speaker 1: think about was we are completely removing the the importance
- 37:09Speaker 1: of Florida going into the swamp and giving Texas their
- 37:12Speaker 1: second straight unranked loss.
- 37:14Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 37:14Speaker 1: Like Texas can afford one or maybe two more of those.
- 37:18Speaker 1: Like eight and four, Texas is probably right there around five.
- 37:24Speaker 2: They're definitely in.
- 37:25Speaker 1: And that is, yeah, you just rendered an entire quarter
- 37:30Speaker 1: of your third of your season irrelevant.
- 37:33Speaker 3: And so, and by the way, this is the shortest
- 37:35Speaker 3: regular season in major, Yeah.
- 37:39Speaker 1: It just, yes, it is going to make some, you know,
- 37:46Speaker 1: eight and two team in November really well, eight and
- 37:49Speaker 1: two teams would already have that, but it's going to
- 37:51Speaker 1: make some seven and two team in November or, you know,
- 37:55Speaker 1: six and three team in November have a lot of excitement.
- 37:57Speaker 1: You think about that? A six and three team to
- 37:59Speaker 1: start November is like, man, we're, we're, we're right here, man.
- 38:02Speaker 1: We got a bad, we got it right. Like we're
- 38:05Speaker 1: right in it. And so it is going to make
- 38:09Speaker 1: people feel a little bit better, I guess, from that perspective.
- 38:13Speaker 1: But I, yeah, I just, I don't love that. I
- 38:16Speaker 1: don't love.
- 38:17Speaker 2: I'm hoping common sense prevails.
- 38:19Speaker 1: It's not. Oh, it's not. I, the cake has been baked.
- 38:22Speaker 3: So maybe even like we might have to live in
- 38:24Speaker 3: the 24 world for a year or two, but I
- 38:26Speaker 3: think in the end, this will all come and be undone.
- 38:31Speaker 1: It would be nice. I have zero confidence.
- 38:33Speaker 2: You think that's going to happen? You don't think so?
- 38:37Speaker 1: I just, I don't think you often see reverting, you know,
- 38:41Speaker 1: once a decision has been made, you never go backwards
- 38:43Speaker 1: from it.
- 38:45Speaker 2: Do you think there's any chance that Donald Trump.
- 38:49Speaker 1: Will fix it for us?
- 38:50Speaker 3: Well, I mean, like, I think it's possible, like not
- 38:53Speaker 3: to talk political, but like, he seems like the type
- 38:55Speaker 3: of dude.
- 38:57Speaker 2: That like, if something catches his eye, he's just like, Oh,
- 39:01Speaker 2: that's interesting. You know? And kind of like latches onto it.
- 39:05Speaker 3: Uh, Is there any chance that he latches onto this
- 39:08Speaker 3: and realizes that it might be the most agreeable thing
- 39:12Speaker 3: that you could do in America right now would be
- 39:14Speaker 3: to ban this playoff from expanding and say, I.
- 39:18Speaker 2: Would love to do something that would make 90 plus
- 39:20Speaker 2: percent of people happy.
- 39:22Speaker 3: Some politicians got to look at this, right? That is
- 39:25Speaker 3: my hope is that the PCSA bill, it's it's still
- 39:29Speaker 3: got to go jump through hoops in the house and
- 39:32Speaker 3: all that. And that somebody jumps in and says, nah, nah,
- 39:37Speaker 3: like we're going to, we're going to amend this thing.
- 39:40Speaker 1: Yeah. I guess it's possible. I don't have a lot
- 39:42Speaker 1: of faith in that happening, but I suppose it's possible again.
- 39:46Speaker 1: I mean, I think we all know what this is. The,
- 39:48Speaker 1: it is the the teams that are spending too much
- 39:51Speaker 1: money feel like they need a participation trophy to justify
- 39:54Speaker 1: the money that they're spending. It is the biggest lipstick
- 39:58Speaker 1: on a pig situation that I've ever seen in my
- 39:59Speaker 1: entire life. You are, yeah, you may make the playoff
- 40:04Speaker 1: at 24th or 23rd or 22nd or 20th. You still
- 40:09Speaker 1: finished 20th that year. You still were not close. And
- 40:12Speaker 1: so maybe a year, a couple of years of bad results,
- 40:16Speaker 1: you know, early in the playoff, which we're already getting
- 40:18Speaker 1: that with 12 teams, but maybe a couple of years
- 40:20Speaker 1: of really lopsided results. Honestly, if they would have just,
- 40:26Speaker 1: if they would have marketed it better and said, we're
- 40:28Speaker 1: going to a 16 with.
- 40:30Speaker 3: A 16 plus eight.
- 40:33Speaker 1: Yeah. I'm, I'm, I'm such a soccer nut. I literally
- 40:36Speaker 1: just watched the champions league game with my daughter. The
- 40:39Speaker 1: champions league expanded exponentially this year. And what they did
- 40:43Speaker 1: was they just said, Hey, we're going to have our
- 40:44Speaker 1: 16 team tournament. Like we've always had, but we're going
- 40:46Speaker 1: to have a little play in to get into that
- 40:48Speaker 1: team tournament, which is, I love that bonus soccer, which
- 40:52Speaker 1: is 24 teams.
- 40:54Speaker 2: It's the same thing.
- 40:54Speaker 1: The playoff CFP is doing it's 24 teams, but it's just, Hey,
- 40:59Speaker 1: these top eight get in automatically. The next day got
- 41:02Speaker 1: to play their way in. We got eight, eight that
- 41:04Speaker 1: are at home and eight that are on the road.
- 41:06Speaker 1: If any of the road teams go into a hostile
- 41:09Speaker 1: environment and win, on a college campus or a European stadium,
- 41:13Speaker 1: then we'll put them in the playoff instead. But our
- 41:15Speaker 1: playoff is just 16 teams. There's an extra round. That's
- 41:19Speaker 1: like a play. And so I think if they would
- 41:20Speaker 1: have just marketed this, because that's exactly what the 24
- 41:23Speaker 1: team is. If they would have just marketed it as
- 41:26Speaker 1: we got a 16 team playoff, we got to play
- 41:28Speaker 1: in for the tournament. Nobody would be upset when the
- 41:31Speaker 1: NCAA goes to 72 or 144 or whatever number they
- 41:34Speaker 1: go to. Nobody would be upset if we said, Hey,
- 41:36Speaker 1: we're going to add extra play in games. Now, it'd
- 41:40Speaker 1: be the same thing in effect. But if we said, Hey,
- 41:42Speaker 1: our playoff is 16 teams. We compromised and we're going
- 41:45Speaker 1: to give you a way to play your way into
- 41:46Speaker 1: the tournament.
- 41:47Speaker 3: Sure.
- 41:47Speaker 1: Yeah, it would be, but we had to call it. We,
- 41:49Speaker 1: and again, that's the same thing in effect. The marketing
- 41:52Speaker 1: around everything with college football is terrible because it doesn't
- 41:55Speaker 1: need marketing. You want to know why? it's just already
- 42:00Speaker 1: great the way that it is. So it is dumb.
- 42:02Speaker 1: It's for a way for these boosters and donors to
- 42:04Speaker 1: continue to get big time money, bring more money in.
- 42:08Speaker 1: Cause it's not even that advantageous from a revenue perspective.
- 42:11Speaker 1: Pace talks about this losing the conference championships. It's costing
- 42:15Speaker 1: the sec a little bit of money. Um, everybody else
- 42:17Speaker 1: is kind of breaking even ish. You know, the ACC
- 42:19Speaker 1: is making a little big 12, but overall it basically
- 42:21Speaker 1: is just a big break even for the whole sport.
- 42:24Speaker 1: It's not about money. It's about the participation trophy that
- 42:27Speaker 1: these people need because they're spending too much on rosters
- 42:30Speaker 1: and still coming in 24th. You want to know why?
- 42:32Speaker 1: Because good coaches still win. That's why at the end
- 42:35Speaker 1: of the day, Kirby's paying the same thing everybody else is,
- 42:38Speaker 1: maybe a little less in some situations, and good coaches
- 42:40Speaker 1: still win at the end of the day. Ryan Day,
- 42:42Speaker 1: spending the same thing everybody else is, but they win
- 42:44Speaker 1: at the end of the day because they're good coaches.
- 42:46Speaker 1: So we need a participation trophy, and that's what we're getting.
- 42:50Speaker 3: Yeah, and the other thing about it too is I
- 42:52Speaker 3: know the coaches have been really behind this quietly in
- 42:57Speaker 3: a lot of cases. Cause I, you know, people like
- 43:02Speaker 3: myself and people with much larger profiles than myself pointed
- 43:07Speaker 3: this out as like participation, trophy culture, creeping into college football.
- 43:11Speaker 3: And you know that like college football coaches are like, shit,
- 43:14Speaker 3: you know, like, Oh, I can't be seen supporting that. But,
- 43:18Speaker 3: I'm going to go tell my athletic director I'm really
- 43:20Speaker 3: in favor of this and I'm worried about our ability
- 43:22Speaker 3: to get a fair shake from the playoff committee. My
- 43:26Speaker 3: point in saying it is these coaches think this is
- 43:29Speaker 3: going to change the perception of whether or not they
- 43:31Speaker 3: were successful at their job. We'll have interim coach. If
- 43:36Speaker 3: I had to bet, I would say we'll have an
- 43:38Speaker 3: interim coach coaching a first-round playoff game for Team 22,
- 43:45Speaker 3: something like that, within the first two years of this form.
- 43:48Speaker 1: Without a doubt. Yeah. Making it sounds good to make
- 43:52Speaker 1: the playoff every year. I mean, I was talking with
- 43:56Speaker 1: Allie today about it. A peek inside getters football.
- 43:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 43:59Speaker 1: Like obviously Florida state's a mess right now. You're going
- 44:03Speaker 1: to be just having a competent coach at a big
- 44:06Speaker 1: three school in the state of Florida. You're guaranteed a
- 44:08Speaker 1: playoff spot every year.
- 44:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 44:11Speaker 1: Like it is. It's insane. So, all right. we're going
- 44:14Speaker 1: to wrap up Graham coffee, dog central, TJ Pittenger, college
- 44:17Speaker 1: football addiction. This is our complete matchup guide. We did
- 44:20Speaker 1: three games today or two games today and talked a
- 44:22Speaker 1: little big picture college football playoff. We'd love if you subscribed.
- 44:25Speaker 1: We'd love if you defund the playoff.
- 44:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 44:29Speaker 1: We'd love if you wrote to your president and, or
- 44:32Speaker 1: your state Senator and told them to kill this thing.
- 44:35Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 44:36Speaker 1: Uh, if Trump, if you watch this, please kill this. Um,
- 44:40Speaker 1: but we'll see what happens. So Graham, thanks for hanging out, man. Always.
- 44:44Speaker 2: Thanks for having me, man.
