Transcript
- 0:00Yo, yo, welcome back to Clone Wars: The Spinoff, the show where we break down the
- 0:04game behind the game.
- 0:06I'm DJ Universe, and today we're pulling the curtain back on a check that a lot of
- 0:10artists don't even know exists.
- 0:12And that right there is the problem.
- 0:14Calvin Blingwell in the building.
- 0:16Twenty years in these streets and I still meet artists who think the only way to eat
- 0:21is streaming numbers and show money.
- 0:23That's a limited view of the business.
- 0:25Lil Bennington, and yeah, I was that artist.
- 0:27I was out here thinking if it ain't on the setlist or on Spotify,
- 0:31it ain't money.
- 0:32First time I got a sync check I had to call my own manager and ask if it was real.
- 0:36Dangerous Zygos, C.E.O.
- 0:39of Currency Development, and that's exactly why we're doing this episode.
- 0:42Today's topic: sync licensing.
- 0:45Getting your music placed in film, television, and advertising,
- 0:48and why that check can outlast anything a single hit record does.
- 0:52So break it down simple for the people.
- 0:54A sync deal is when your song gets licensed to sync up with visual media.
- 0:58A TV show, a movie trailer, a Nike commercial, a video game.
- 1:03The music becomes part of somebody else's story.
- 1:06Right, and there's two separate checks baked into that.
- 1:09One, the sync fee, which is the upfront licensing payment.
- 1:13Two, the performance royalty, which is backend money your PRO collects every single
- 1:18time that placement airs.
- 1:20A commercial can run for two years and pay you every quarter it's on air.
- 1:24That backend piece is the part nobody explains to young artists.
- 1:28I've seen dudes take a five thousand dollar sync check, feel good about it,
- 1:32and never realize the airplay royalties behind it could triple that over time if
- 1:36their publishing is registered right.
- 1:38That's the part that got me.
- 1:40I wasn't even registered with a PRO properly when my first placement happened.
- 1:44My producer had to walk me through ASCAP and BMI like I was a kid learning to ride a
- 1:49bike.
- 1:50If your paperwork ain't right, that backend money just sits there unclaimed.
- 1:55Here's the number that matters.
- 1:56Sync licensing did roughly six hundred fifty million dollars in trade revenue
- 2:00recently, and hip-hop and R&B are leading that demand because every brand wants to
- 2:06sound young and urban.
- 2:07Streaming platforms and ad agencies can't get enough of our sound.
- 2:12And the range on these deals is real money.
- 2:14Commercial campaigns can run twenty thousand to over half a million dollars upfront.
- 2:20Film trailers sit in that ten to eighty thousand dollar range.
- 2:24Even a single TV episode placement can be fifteen hundred to ten thousand.
- 2:28But here's what I need the young artists to hear.
- 2:31That demand for our culture doesn't automatically mean our pockets.
- 2:35If you don't own your publishing, or you signed it away in some administration deal
- 2:39you didn't read, somebody else is cashing that check with your voice on it.
- 2:43That's why knowledge of self matters in this business, not just on the mic.
- 2:47You gotta know what you made, know what you own, and know who's holding your
- 2:50paperwork.
- 2:51Otherwise the culture gets sold and you're just the sample.
- 2:54For the indie artists listening, real talk on how this works without a major label
- 2:58pushing you.
- 2:59Sync licensing agencies and music libraries take submissions directly.
- 3:04You clear your own masters and publishing, keep both sides clean,
- 3:07and you can pitch yourself.
- 3:08Discipline is the key word there.
- 3:10You need instrumentals, stems, and clean radio edits ready to go before anybody
- 3:16asks.
- 3:17Supervisors move fast.
- 3:19If your metadata is a mess or your song has an uncleared sample,
- 3:24that opportunity walks right past you.
- 3:27And structure your business like a business.
- 3:29Separate entity for your publishing, register every song with your PRO the day it
- 3:34drops, keep your splits documented in writing with every collaborator.
- 3:37That's generational wealth infrastructure, not just admin work.
- 3:41From the culture side, this is also a branding opportunity.
- 3:45The right placement puts your sound in front of people who never would have found
- 3:49you on a playlist.
- 3:51That's the merger of sound and strategy right there.
- 3:54Before we close, I want to bring it back to something bigger than the check.
- 3:59In the Five Percent teachings, Knowledge is one, Wisdom is two,
- 4:03Understanding is three.
- 4:05Knowledge is knowing the facts of your business.
- 4:08Wisdom is applying that knowledge, wisdom is the wife to knowledge.
- 4:12Understanding is what completes it, when the artist and the business finally see eye
- 4:16to eye.
- 4:17That's Supreme Mathematics applied straight to the ledger.
- 4:20Know your rights, apply them with discipline, and understanding shows up as the
- 4:25check that keeps clearing years after the song stopped trending.
- 4:28That's the blueprint I'm taking with me.
- 4:30Get your knowledge of self as an artist and as a business owner,
- 4:34because both of those are the same person.
- 4:36That's the episode, family.
- 4:38Get your publishing right, get your metadata right, and stay ready for the placement
- 4:42that changes everything.
- 4:43Legacy over hype, ownership over clout.
- 4:46We out.
