- 0:00Speaker 1: So you have any big plans for the summer? Whoa,
- 0:03Speaker 1: it's one more thing. I'm strong and getty, one more thing.
- 0:10Speaker 1: So we've been talking about this for years. People that
- 0:18Speaker 1: try to engage you in conversation, like the person ringing
- 0:22Speaker 1: you up at the grocery store and you know, I'm
- 0:26Speaker 1: buying some groceries. I'm buying a gallon of milk and
- 0:30Speaker 1: some carrots. So what are your plans for tonight? And
- 0:34Speaker 1: I realize are you gonna drink milk and eat carrots?
- 0:37Speaker 1: That is exactly how I answer, usually because I'm a
- 0:40Speaker 1: smart ass and annoyed by these questions and I am.
- 0:43Speaker 1: I feel bad because it's not their fault. I don't think.
- 0:45Speaker 1: I think many times you're told that that will make
- 0:50Speaker 1: the customers feel more welcome or something. And like I
- 0:53Speaker 1: said on the radio the other day, I wish there
- 0:55Speaker 1: was some sort of stamp I could get or thing
- 0:57Speaker 1: I could work around. My knackers says. I'm not one
- 0:59Speaker 1: of those people. I don't feel more likely to come
- 1:02Speaker 1: back if you engage me in conversation. I feel less
- 1:05Speaker 1: likely to come back. It's not your fault.
- 1:07Speaker 2: But although I do require the basics of polite society,
- 1:12Speaker 2: because occasionally you'll be in a place a grocery store,
- 1:16Speaker 2: maybe not so high end, or person's having a bad
- 1:19Speaker 2: day and they don't even acknowledge your presence. They just
- 1:22Speaker 2: start ringing stuff up. Did we talk about this on
- 1:25Speaker 2: the air or not? About the person ringing me up
- 1:27Speaker 2: who had the ear piece in? Did we talk about
- 1:29Speaker 2: that on the air?
- 1:30Speaker 1: I don't think so. Yeah, I don't think so. I'm
- 1:32Speaker 1: at a dollar store and because I agree, hey, how
- 1:36Speaker 1: you doing good? How are you fine? Got to have
- 1:39Speaker 1: that find everything? Okay, yep, that's fine. I have no
- 1:42Speaker 1: problem with that whatsoever. The nothing is weird. And so
- 1:46Speaker 1: I was checking out the Dollar Storm with my two
- 1:48Speaker 1: boys and checking out, and I said, Hey, how's it going.
- 1:51Speaker 1: She says nothing to me and rings me up, and
- 1:54Speaker 1: I said, have a good day. She said nothing to me,
- 1:57Speaker 1: and I walked down and I said that girl shouldn't
- 2:01Speaker 1: be working there. If I owned that store, I'd be
- 2:03Speaker 1: so freaking pissed off to know that I have somebody
- 2:08Speaker 1: work in the register that doesn't even say hello. And
- 2:10Speaker 1: he said that she had her earpiece in, she's listening
- 2:12Speaker 1: to music. I said, called to that absolutely freaking firer.
- 2:16Speaker 1: And he said that in. My son was like really
- 2:19Speaker 1: taken aback by my response to that, Like, everybody has
- 2:22Speaker 1: their ear piece in. It's okay, it's not a big deal.
- 2:24Speaker 1: She's listening to music. And my son always has his
- 2:28Speaker 1: earpiece in, I mean always, and I have to take
- 2:30Speaker 1: it out. I want to talk to you. I want
- 2:32Speaker 1: to be able to talk to you. I want to
- 2:33Speaker 1: know when I talk to you you can hear me.
- 2:35Speaker 1: I mean if we're riding in the car or whatever,
- 2:37Speaker 1: and it's just part of that age group they have
- 2:40Speaker 1: it in always with each other. Like if there's four
- 2:44Speaker 1: dudes sitting around talking, they each have an ear piece
- 2:47Speaker 1: in listen to music. I guess, wow. I don't know
- 2:51Speaker 1: what that is, if it's just like a fashion thing,
- 2:54Speaker 1: or if their brain actually desires it. But I thought,
- 2:59Speaker 1: when I'm dead, and it won't be long I'm in
- 3:01Speaker 1: the winter of my life, the next generation they'll all
- 3:04Speaker 1: have ear pieces in and they won't expect any communication
- 3:06Speaker 1: whatsoever because they're all listening to music or a podcast.
- 3:10Speaker 1: And so I guess you'll go through this stort checkout
- 3:12Speaker 1: and nobody will talk to each other. You know, you
- 3:15Speaker 1: ride together in a car somewhere, nobody says a word
- 3:17Speaker 1: to each other. Because you're all listening to your own
- 3:18Speaker 1: stuff in your head. It's just gonna happen. There's no
- 3:20Speaker 1: stopping it. But it makes me nuts. But I didn't
- 3:25Speaker 1: realize it'd gotten that bad. Oh yeah, yeah, he couldn't
- 3:27Speaker 1: believe that it bothered me that she had an ear
- 3:31Speaker 1: piece in and didn't respond to me, because that's the
- 3:35Speaker 1: way his generation does it. Yeah, it's shocking to me.
- 3:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I know, I know well, and it's resulted in
- 3:42Speaker 2: so much unmistakable misery and isolation. I just if I'm
- 3:46Speaker 2: casting my bets for who's in charge of the world
- 3:48Speaker 2: in two hundred years, it's the young and hungry and
- 3:51Speaker 2: backward civilizations right now, although they may well as soon
- 3:56Speaker 2: as they get hold of the technology and the food.
- 3:59Speaker 2: I mean that every every country that goes from like
- 4:02Speaker 2: eleven cents per capita for GDP to like over a
- 4:06Speaker 2: dollar fifty, they immediately become obese and they adopt all
- 4:11Speaker 2: of the modern stuff that's killing us. I just think
- 4:14Speaker 2: we've invented our own doom. We've invented too many pleasures
- 4:17Speaker 2: to resist. No country for old men, right, but back
- 4:21Speaker 2: to like people that aren't teenagers where you expect some
- 4:25Speaker 2: sort of normal give and take with the cashier or
- 4:29Speaker 2: the dental hygh genius came up the other day, Katie
- 4:32Speaker 2: brought up she hates it when they ask her questions
- 4:34Speaker 2: when they got their hands in your mouth, because you
- 4:36Speaker 2: can't answer. Anyway, Katie's not here today because she's sick,
- 4:39Speaker 2: but we got this text about that because we were wondering.
- 4:42Speaker 2: I'm sure the dental high genius is told to make conversation.
- 4:46Speaker 2: It makes the patience feel more comfortable or something like it.
- 4:48Speaker 1: I don't know. It helps distract them from things that
- 4:51Speaker 1: bother you are scary or whatever. Sir, longtime listener, this
- 4:54Speaker 1: person text lived in San Francisco for twenty years. I
- 4:56Speaker 1: now live in Manhattan. Okay, wow, one of those people
- 4:59Speaker 1: that there are only really a couple places you can
- 5:02Speaker 1: live in America Los Angeles, New York, maybe San Francisco
- 5:05Speaker 1: or Chicago, but those are your only options. I know
- 5:08Speaker 1: a number of people like that. The only places they've
- 5:09Speaker 1: lived are those very big cities. But anyway, as a
- 5:14Speaker 1: long time dental hygienist, employers do not tell you to
- 5:19Speaker 1: engage in conversation with the patients. Some patients absolutely want
- 5:22Speaker 1: us to talk and tell them stories to take their
- 5:25Speaker 1: time off the process or their mind off the process. Yeah,
- 5:28Speaker 1: and a good one will get a sense from the
- 5:30Speaker 1: patient whether they want to talk or be quiet, which
- 5:32Speaker 1: I do appreciate that you picked up on my hateful, hateful,
- 5:36Speaker 1: murderous vibe that I don't want to talk. I appreciate that.
- 5:41Speaker 1: It is perfect perfectly polite to tell us how you
- 5:44Speaker 1: want to experience the appointment. It's your money, your time,
- 5:47Speaker 1: so tell them, please talk me through this, help distract me,
- 5:50Speaker 1: or say I'd prefer to sit here and just think
- 5:52Speaker 1: and stare at the ceiling or listen to a podcast
- 5:55Speaker 1: or something. You don't need to talk to me. That's
- 5:57Speaker 1: not a bad idea. Just tell them ahead of time.
- 5:58Speaker 1: I'm not a person that wants to talk. I don't
- 6:00Speaker 1: feel like you have to. I don't know. Has that
- 6:01Speaker 1: come off as being a dick.
- 6:03Speaker 2: M I would guess among the folks that have bothered me.
- 6:09Speaker 2: And when I say bothered me, it's fine, it's really fine.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Oh yeah, it's a yeah, first world problems. I mean seriously, yeah. Yeah.
- 6:17Speaker 1: In the list of things that actually bother me, that's
- 6:19Speaker 1: way way way down.
- 6:20Speaker 2: But the gal who I've worked with at times in
- 6:23Speaker 2: the past. I'll just say that dental hygienist. I could
- 6:27Speaker 2: write a fairly brief but reasonably complete biography of this one,
- 6:33Speaker 2: and that is.
- 6:35Speaker 1: Her Boswell to her Johnson, you you could write a
- 6:37Speaker 1: biography of her, having just followed her around.
- 6:41Speaker 2: Uh yeah, And I just there's no need for that.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Uh but yeah, it's fine.
- 6:46Speaker 2: I just I'm not going to put on they my
- 6:49Speaker 2: old dentist, and I've I've been very fortunate to have
- 6:53Speaker 2: had two dentists in the last thirty years. They've both
- 6:55Speaker 2: been fantastic. My old dentists.
- 6:58Speaker 1: I haven't twenty years, so we have that in common. Wow.
- 7:02Speaker 2: But they would give you headphones, but I would always
- 7:04Speaker 2: just wear one because they have to communicate with you.
- 7:08Speaker 2: Can you till your head a little toward me great
- 7:10Speaker 2: or you know whatever, open a little less.
- 7:12Speaker 1: That's to help them do their thing.
- 7:14Speaker 2: And so I've never been comfortable with and maybe it's
- 7:17Speaker 2: my generation with being in communicato.
- 7:19Speaker 1: No, I don't like you're gonna have to communicate with it.
- 7:21Speaker 1: You know. The one that I hate the most, and
- 7:23Speaker 1: this is a different topic, but the one I hate
- 7:24Speaker 1: the most blood draws, and I even if I first
- 7:28Speaker 1: of all, yeah, don't talk about it, and then even
- 7:31Speaker 1: if I tell them not to talk about it, most
- 7:33Speaker 1: of the time they do. Look, just I'm fine with
- 7:35Speaker 1: this will be okay, just I don't want to don't
- 7:37Speaker 1: talk about it at all. Let's not talk about it. Still,
- 7:40Speaker 1: I'm gonna get a ooh, you got some juicy veins.
- 7:42Speaker 1: This will be easy. Or having trouble finding your veins
- 7:45Speaker 1: is gonna be hard to get the needle into your
- 7:47Speaker 1: veins because I need you to clench your Yeah, stop
- 7:50Speaker 1: talking about it. It's all right. I don't want to
- 7:53Speaker 1: hear a word about it. Let me just sit down,
- 7:58Speaker 1: look at the wall, pretend something else going on. You
- 8:00Speaker 1: jabbed me. I'm fine.
- 8:02Speaker 2: Some people, and this covers every occupation known to mankind,
- 8:08Speaker 2: be they a humble street sweeper or a skilled brain
- 8:11Speaker 2: surgeon something in between. In every profession, Jack, there are
- 8:17Speaker 2: dumbasses or people who are so emotionally not intelligent they
- 8:22Speaker 2: can't take an effing hint and see it from your perspective.
- 8:29Speaker 1: And it's annoying with me, but really annoying with my son,
- 8:32Speaker 1: who every time but once is thrown up when he
- 8:35Speaker 1: gets a blood dry and gets so anxious and nervous
- 8:37Speaker 1: and out of control and everything like that, and we
- 8:39Speaker 1: have multiple adults have to hold them down. I mean,
- 8:41Speaker 1: it's a horrific experience every time we get there. But
- 8:44Speaker 1: I go in there ahead of time and say, let's
- 8:45Speaker 1: just not talk about it at all. He really struggles
- 8:47Speaker 1: with this. I say what I just said and everything
- 8:49Speaker 1: like that, And almost all the time they say, the
- 8:51Speaker 1: needle's not that big seat here, look at the needle.
- 8:53Speaker 1: It's not gonna no, no, you effing moron, How do
- 8:58Speaker 1: you not get this? Wow?
- 9:02Speaker 2: Wow, I don't think there's anything you can do for
- 9:05Speaker 2: a person like that.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Here, I'm gonna got me the needle. How do you
- 9:09Speaker 1: like it? Here?
- 9:10Speaker 2: You're so probably not now, But next podcast, I will
- 9:14Speaker 2: tell you this. Next One More Thing podcast, the discussion
- 9:19Speaker 2: of your Disposable Dog THEORYDT will not die and and
- 9:25Speaker 2: the the responses and thoughts and philosophizings are not getting
- 9:30Speaker 2: less interesting, they're getting more interest.
- 9:32Speaker 1: Cool.
- 9:33Speaker 2: So when we're turned to Jack's brutal and hateful dispatch
- 9:36Speaker 2: of innocent dogs and probably cats uh at a.
- 9:40Speaker 1: Future date, So more psychopathy on the next One More Thing.
- 9:46Speaker 1: You know what my next dental appointment. I'm gonna look
- 9:48Speaker 1: at the hygiendas and say, if you don't mind while
- 9:50Speaker 1: you clean my teeth, tell me about the Cuban missile crisis.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Just give them a topic. I'm gonna gi him a topic. Yeah, well,
- 9:59Speaker 1: I guess that's at
