- 0:08Speaker 1: Welcome to the Favorites, the podcast part of the Volume
- 0:11Speaker 1: Podcast Network. I am Chad Moment of the Action Network today.
- 0:16Speaker 1: I'm joined as always by Michael Is, my companion, Mike
- 0:18Speaker 1: cam Padre my BFF, professional better Simon Hunter, ed osim
- 0:22Speaker 1: in Chad.
- 0:23Speaker 2: How are we doing?
- 0:25Speaker 3: Listen?
- 0:25Speaker 1: Before we came on the air, you said something that
- 0:28Speaker 1: was concerning to me, also interesting, kind of funny imagining it.
- 0:33Speaker 1: But you are going on vacation a couple of weeks.
- 0:36Speaker 1: You're from England, You're going to visit your family in
- 0:40Speaker 1: northern England.
- 0:42Speaker 3: How are you preparing to go visit your family?
- 0:46Speaker 2: We're putting this on air.
- 0:48Speaker 4: I'm preparing in many ways, but the main way is
- 0:50Speaker 4: I've been drinking before going and I'm not, you know,
- 0:54Speaker 4: chat out the biggest drinker. Obviously, there's other things I
- 0:57Speaker 4: like more than drinking. And for this trip though, I
- 1:00Speaker 4: know I'm going to be drinking, so I have been
- 1:03Speaker 4: preparing my body with you know, beers and a little
- 1:07Speaker 4: bit of whiskey because where I'm going is basically that's
- 1:09Speaker 4: what I'm gonna be drinking. So yeah, I am getting
- 1:12Speaker 4: ready to head up to Edinburgh, and basically Edinburgh is
- 1:16Speaker 4: one hundred bars on one street and I'm going to
- 1:19Speaker 4: be seen around half of those, god willing, and I
- 1:24Speaker 4: don't know three day times. So I'm looking forward to
- 1:26Speaker 4: visiting Edinburgh, the history of Edinburgh, and drinking my way
- 1:29Speaker 4: down one street again. One hundred bars on one street
- 1:32Speaker 4: in Edinburgh. It doesn't even sound real.
- 1:35Speaker 1: And how did you feel for your preparations when you
- 1:39Speaker 1: woke up this morning?
- 1:41Speaker 4: I did the I did a puke and rally puked
- 1:44Speaker 4: and then had a beer with eggs. So I'm telling you, Chad,
- 1:47Speaker 4: I am I'm getting right back into it. Kegs and eggs.
- 1:50Speaker 4: It's the simple man's version. Just a couple of beers
- 1:52Speaker 4: and eggs.
- 1:53Speaker 1: How much did you drink yesterday? And when did you
- 1:55Speaker 1: stop to the point that you were puking this morning?
- 1:59Speaker 2: Not a lot?
- 2:00Speaker 4: Like it, like ten beers over the course of eight hours,
- 2:03Speaker 4: So it's not crazy.
- 2:05Speaker 2: That's not crazy. Like Chad, I'm a big guy.
- 2:08Speaker 4: Like in my prime, like the college late high school days,
- 2:12Speaker 4: I would split a thirty pack with a buddy and
- 2:14Speaker 4: we would both kill it in two to three hours.
- 2:18Speaker 4: And like again, that's fifteen beers apiece in two to
- 2:21Speaker 4: three hours, So ten beers in ten hours.
- 2:24Speaker 2: I feel like that's not I don't have a problem yet,
- 2:26Speaker 2: but I told you it's.
- 2:27Speaker 4: Different like in England. Even my cousins who don't really
- 2:31Speaker 4: drink much. My one cousin, she's probably you know, she's.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Twenty eight now.
- 2:35Speaker 4: By the time, she was probably early twenties. We buy
- 2:38Speaker 4: a giant pint of beer and I'm chatting with her,
- 2:41Speaker 4: and she finishes the entire beer. When I have I
- 2:44Speaker 4: have just taken two SIPs. Within like two minutes, I'm
- 2:46Speaker 4: already buying her another beer. It's just a different culture
- 2:49Speaker 4: over there where they they put it back like water.
- 2:51Speaker 4: And I don't represent Americans well at all. I am
- 2:55Speaker 4: soft when it comes to drinking. I can last, but
- 2:57Speaker 4: I cannot throw them back like that. So I'm just
- 3:00Speaker 4: my body ready for what's coming.
- 3:02Speaker 1: It's kind of like I like that you're in training
- 3:03Speaker 1: and you take this seriously and you're a professional in
- 3:06Speaker 1: everything you do. It's kind of like when we had
- 3:11Speaker 1: cheese steaks together and I crushed mine and you could
- 3:16Speaker 1: barely get through yours.
- 3:18Speaker 4: It's just how I know you don't have many brothers,
- 3:20Speaker 4: and no point that we mentioned this was a race.
- 3:22Speaker 4: These cheese steaks and Chad goes, I finished mine before you.
- 3:25Speaker 2: I go, what's your point? Who cares?
- 3:27Speaker 1: You?
- 3:27Speaker 2: Go?
- 3:28Speaker 4: Well, I ate it faster than you did. I go,
- 3:29Speaker 4: Is it a competition? It's just you never mentioned it
- 3:32Speaker 4: was a race. But it finishes. It goes, Look I'm done,
- 3:35Speaker 4: You're not. It's like, what are wrong with this guy?
- 3:37Speaker 1: Everything is a competition, Simon, It's always a competition. We
- 3:43Speaker 1: got a fun show today because this Sunday is Father's
- 3:47Speaker 1: Day and we're going to do something brand new here
- 3:50Speaker 1: on the show.
- 3:50Speaker 3: We're doing our salute to.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Fathers who, by the way, obviously influenced us in tremendous
- 3:57Speaker 1: ways that led to how we do this show, why
- 4:01Speaker 1: we do this show, what we're interested in. You're going
- 4:03Speaker 1: to tell some stories. Matt Mitchell is going to tell
- 4:07Speaker 1: some stories. Part of me feels like this was just
- 4:10Speaker 1: an excuse by Matt Mitchell to get Matt Mitchell on
- 4:14Speaker 1: to the show.
- 4:15Speaker 3: But at the end of the day, these are.
- 4:17Speaker 1: The men who molded us into the thriving titans of
- 4:22Speaker 1: industry we've all become. I feel like, Matt Mitchell, I
- 4:29Speaker 1: want you to kick it off because more than anyone,
- 4:33Speaker 1: I feel like you've been thinking about.
- 4:35Speaker 2: This, thanks Chren.
- 4:37Speaker 5: Yeah, I for sure I've been thinking about Father's Day
- 4:40Speaker 5: a lot, because this will be the first Father's Day
- 4:43Speaker 5: since I was since it applied to me personally, that
- 4:46Speaker 5: I'll be able to enjoy it, or I can be
- 4:49Speaker 5: the centerpiece of the day and not my own father
- 4:54Speaker 5: or my father in law or a sick child of
- 4:57Speaker 5: some kind. It's really going to be all about me
- 5:00Speaker 5: on Father's Day, and I'll be doing the you know,
- 5:04Speaker 5: the thing that I want to do, almost as much
- 5:06Speaker 5: as I actually want to do. Obviously number one would
- 5:08Speaker 5: be something that involves no children in sight. But short
- 5:12Speaker 5: of that, it'll be making my children do stuff that
- 5:15Speaker 5: only I want to do, the ultimate kind of Father's
- 5:18Speaker 5: Day salute.
- 5:22Speaker 3: I'm not sure what that entails like.
- 5:24Speaker 1: You can't get them into the casino in in Milwaukee.
- 5:28Speaker 1: You can't get them on the apps to start making
- 5:31Speaker 1: bets for you. You can't take them to the bar where
- 5:34Speaker 1: you're gonna drink all day and eat wings all day.
- 5:38Speaker 3: I'm not even sure what that looks like.
- 5:41Speaker 1: And by the way, I'm saying this from the perspective
- 5:44Speaker 1: of someone who whose son graduated from high school yesterday,
- 5:48Speaker 1: who walked into the house I saw the clock at
- 5:52Speaker 1: five twenty four am this morning, who is still sleeping.
- 5:57Speaker 1: And another son who is living in Philadelpha, his best
- 6:01Speaker 1: life away from me. So I'm barely parenting at this
- 6:07Speaker 1: point my fathering duties. I got three months until my
- 6:10Speaker 1: kids out of the house. I'm basically done. Father's Day
- 6:14Speaker 1: is a symbol for me.
- 6:15Speaker 5: Now, Yeah, your fatherhood approach is the same as your
- 6:18Speaker 5: managerial approach. You're just you're barely there, but you maintained
- 6:23Speaker 5: some of the title. So no, I can appreciate that.
- 6:26Speaker 1: And I like to think of it as I like
- 6:28Speaker 1: to think of it as hiring really great people, siring
- 6:34Speaker 1: really great people, giving them the general direction and vision
- 6:40Speaker 1: of where I think we should collectively go as a unit,
- 6:45Speaker 1: as a family unit, whether that be at work or
- 6:48Speaker 1: at home, and then I like to let them make
- 6:51Speaker 1: their own choices and come to.
- 6:53Speaker 3: Me with the hard problems.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Is Barack Obama once said, you know, years ago, ansored
- 7:00Speaker 1: the Sloan Sports Analytics conference Action Network did. It was
- 7:06Speaker 1: our first full year as a company. It was March
- 7:09Speaker 1: of twenty eighteen, and we sponsored the main room at
- 7:14Speaker 1: the conference. It happened to be when Barack Obama was
- 7:16Speaker 1: speaking speaking of fathers, this is a great father story.
- 7:22Speaker 1: I met Barack Obama. There's like a procession line to
- 7:27Speaker 1: meet him, right, there's probably about fifty of us who
- 7:30Speaker 1: got to go before he went on stage and spend
- 7:33Speaker 1: thirty seconds with him and get our picture taken. And
- 7:37Speaker 1: I thought so much about what I was going to
- 7:39Speaker 1: say before I went on stay, before I met him,
- 7:42Speaker 1: and Peter Ernan, who knows Barack Obama, I was thinking
- 7:49Speaker 1: about mentioning him because at the time we had just
- 7:52Speaker 1: launched the action part of the Churning Group. I decided
- 7:55Speaker 1: I wanted to go a different route. I was going
- 7:57Speaker 1: to be hey, I'm from Chicago, but I felt like
- 8:00Speaker 1: that wasn't going to be sort of good enough. And
- 8:03Speaker 1: so then I told him a story about how I
- 8:07Speaker 1: was driving my kid, my older kid, home from something,
- 8:11Speaker 1: and we were talking about where I was going to
- 8:12Speaker 1: be the following day, and I said, oh, by the way,
- 8:16Speaker 1: I'm meeting Barack Obama. I'm meeting President Obama. He goes, wow,
- 8:22Speaker 1: that's cool. And I said to him, Wow, you think
- 8:27Speaker 1: I'm cool because I'm meeting Barack Obama. And he says no,
- 8:32Speaker 1: I said, it's cool that you're meeting Barack Obama. I
- 8:35Speaker 1: didn't say that you're cool because you're meeting Barack Obama.
- 8:40Speaker 3: So that's the story I decided to go with.
- 8:43Speaker 1: And so I've got thirty seconds to convey this to
- 8:46Speaker 1: Barack Obama. And he looks at me and he's got like,
- 8:49Speaker 1: at this point, he's got his hand on his chin
- 8:52Speaker 1: and he's sort of like finger on his lips, and
- 8:55Speaker 1: he's he's thinking, he's processing, he's consternating, and he looks
- 9:01Speaker 1: at me and he goes, so, your kid is saying,
- 9:05Speaker 1: the transitive property does not exist here. And I go,
- 9:10Speaker 1: that's what he's saying.
- 9:11Speaker 3: And he looks at me. He goes, he's wrong. Let's
- 9:14Speaker 3: take a.
- 9:14Speaker 1: Picture, grabs me by the shoulder, turns me around, big smile.
- 9:19Speaker 1: It was the smoothest fucking move you've ever seen in
- 9:22Speaker 1: your entire life.
- 9:23Speaker 3: It was glorious. And I went back home and I
- 9:27Speaker 3: told my kid that story.
- 9:29Speaker 5: I would send you straight to Guantanamo Bay for wasting
- 9:32Speaker 5: my time with that story if I was the president
- 9:34Speaker 5: of the United States. So but hey, somebody arrests this
- 9:38Speaker 5: cool cat. Hey snoopy with the sunglasses, Joe cool over here,
- 9:43Speaker 5: straight to.
- 9:44Speaker 1: Guantanamo Anyways, anyways, Matt, you had a story to tell.
- 9:48Speaker 5: Well three things. One, it's a shame Brian Wilson died
- 9:52Speaker 5: before you could hear somebody rhyme, hires and sires, so
- 9:57Speaker 5: congratulations on that.
- 9:58Speaker 3: Thank you. Two, I do what are the most illiterate Yeah, podcast,
- 10:04Speaker 3: gambling podcast, hiring the.
- 10:06Speaker 5: Best in siring the best is going to absolutely haunt me,
- 10:09Speaker 5: so thank you for that. Two, I do want to
- 10:12Speaker 5: point out on behalf of the great state of Wisconsin.
- 10:14Speaker 5: You absolutely can bring children into any bar if they're
- 10:17Speaker 5: escorted by a grown up, and they can stay as
- 10:20Speaker 5: long as they like, and legally speaking, they can be
- 10:22Speaker 5: served alcohol. It's the only state that that is legal.
- 10:26Speaker 5: It's a great state. And finally, I do want to
- 10:29Speaker 5: provide a very very belated Happy Father's Day to a
- 10:33Speaker 5: great moment in sports history. Sixty one fathers days ago,
- 10:39Speaker 5: future Hall of Famer and US Senator Jim Bunning of
- 10:43Speaker 5: the Philadelphia Phillies goes into a sweltering Shay Stadium in
- 10:47Speaker 5: New York with his wife and the eldest of his
- 10:51Speaker 5: seven children, and he throws the first regular season perfect
- 10:56Speaker 5: game in forty two years in Major League Baseball. Here's
- 11:00Speaker 5: to you, Jim Budding. I also want to point out,
- 11:03Speaker 5: in true Father's Day style, his Father's Day, he pitches
- 11:06Speaker 5: a perfect game. It was the first game of a doubleheader.
- 11:09Speaker 5: Making these boys work a double on their own day unbelievable.
- 11:13Speaker 5: But here's the U Philadelphia, Philly's legend.
- 11:16Speaker 1: Jim Budding, Well done. Did you have anything else you
- 11:20Speaker 1: want to say? You want Simon to go to his story?
- 11:23Speaker 5: You know what, I'll tell one real quick to start
- 11:26Speaker 5: things off, because I want to point out that my dad,
- 11:29Speaker 5: who's lovely and still with us and who I love dearly,
- 11:33Speaker 5: I got my dad into sports, not the other way around.
- 11:35Speaker 5: My dad hated sports, had no He's one of those
- 11:38Speaker 5: guys just had no interest in sports at all. The
- 11:42Speaker 5: only thing he hated more was gambling. That did not
- 11:45Speaker 5: work on me anyway. So sorry, dad. But when I
- 11:50Speaker 5: was a kid and I realized my dad wasn't like
- 11:53Speaker 5: built to be a fan, was when I started playing sports,
- 11:57Speaker 5: and he would just get so consumed by anxiety if
- 12:01Speaker 5: a game was close that he couldn't like, he couldn't
- 12:03Speaker 5: stand it. It would feel like he was getting squeezed
- 12:05Speaker 5: to death. So when I started playing basketball as a
- 12:08Speaker 5: middle schooler. I was total dog shit. The teams were
- 12:13Speaker 5: total dog shit. I was tall, but I was totally useless,
- 12:16Speaker 5: and we'd lose every game. But if it was ever close,
- 12:20Speaker 5: i'd look over into the stands in the gym or whatever,
- 12:23Speaker 5: and my dad would be getting up to leave. He
- 12:25Speaker 5: would just extricate himself from the situation. And our home
- 12:28Speaker 5: gym had a little had a door at one end
- 12:32Speaker 5: that led to a like the school kitchen and had
- 12:35Speaker 5: a little window in it. But he would just leave
- 12:37Speaker 5: if it was close. He would just bounce and go
- 12:40Speaker 5: pace around in the dark in this in this kitchen.
- 12:42Speaker 5: But he could still see the scoreboard from that little window,
- 12:45Speaker 5: so he'd know when the game kind of was wrapping up.
- 12:48Speaker 5: And one game, it was really close late, which was
- 12:51Speaker 5: unusual for us, and I get fouled and I have
- 12:54Speaker 5: a chance to tie the game late, and I was
- 12:56Speaker 5: really nervous because again I wasn't very good. And I
- 12:59Speaker 5: look over and my dad's obviously gone, and I'm like
- 13:02Speaker 5: sad because like, oh, this could be my big moment.
- 13:04Speaker 5: My Dad's not gonna see it. That's too bad. And
- 13:06Speaker 5: I'm lining up to shoot the free throws. I look
- 13:09Speaker 5: over and I see my dad's head pop into that
- 13:12Speaker 5: little window in the door, and I felt such an
- 13:16Speaker 5: incredible wave of relief that like, there's my old man,
- 13:20Speaker 5: he's gonna see me. I'm here. I was so relaxed,
- 13:24Speaker 5: and because of that, I was able to absolutely brick
- 13:28Speaker 5: the shit out of both of those free throws in
- 13:31Speaker 5: humiliating fashion. And we lost the game by two points.
- 13:35Speaker 1: So that story had ended earnestly with you making the
- 13:40Speaker 1: free throws, I would have been so incredibly disappointed.
- 13:46Speaker 5: I could have shot fucking twenty five free throws. There's
- 13:49Speaker 5: no way I was making two of those in that scenario.
- 13:52Speaker 1: Simon, Please share with us the story about your loving father,
- 13:58Speaker 1: who Matt Mitchell and I adore, who's our biggest supporter,
- 14:04Speaker 1: who shows up and shows out at all of our
- 14:07Speaker 1: live events, who I text with independent of you.
- 14:11Speaker 3: Just the lovely, lovely man.
- 14:14Speaker 2: Yeah, great man. Yeah, he's a great man and very lucky.
- 14:19Speaker 4: You know, I even I know at a young age,
- 14:21Speaker 4: I'll go to a man my dad was where it's
- 14:22Speaker 4: just you know, it is like you you go and
- 14:25Speaker 4: you spend time with your friends or just see how
- 14:27Speaker 4: their family dynamic works. And I'm just like, holy shit,
- 14:29Speaker 4: I didn't realize how good I got it right. There's
- 14:31Speaker 4: just some dads who are just assholes or they're not
- 14:34Speaker 4: involved in their kids' lives. And you know, my dad,
- 14:37Speaker 4: every sporting events I had, he was there, and you know,
- 14:40Speaker 4: he coached me in soccer from fourth grade to eighth
- 14:43Speaker 4: grade travel soccer.
- 14:44Speaker 2: So like before I.
- 14:46Speaker 4: Was really into football, you know, being a little British boy,
- 14:49Speaker 4: you know my dad coached and you know.
- 14:51Speaker 2: It just stort popped in my head.
- 14:53Speaker 4: My dad when he coached me, he would yell at
- 14:55Speaker 4: me talking about other players because you couldn't yell. You know,
- 14:59Speaker 4: people didn't want their he had yelled out by a coach,
- 15:01Speaker 4: so you just hear him yelling at me. But I'd
- 15:03Speaker 4: be really talking about other guys on the team. I
- 15:05Speaker 4: thought that was always really funny, just always yelling Simon
- 15:09Speaker 4: get to the ball and get running, and he'd be talking.
- 15:12Speaker 2: Abou other people.
- 15:12Speaker 4: Obviously because I was always I was mental, especially back then,
- 15:14Speaker 4: I was all over the place.
- 15:16Speaker 2: But yeah, my funny.
- 15:18Speaker 4: Stories with my dad are always me just just pissing
- 15:21Speaker 4: them off. Like I really love to poke the bear,
- 15:23Speaker 4: especially as a young kid. I just got great joy
- 15:26Speaker 4: out of getting my dad rought up because you've met him.
- 15:28Speaker 4: My dad such a nice, friendly guy. But if you
- 15:31Speaker 4: got him, especially me, I knew what ticked him. You
- 15:34Speaker 4: get him going, he gets going. And my favorite one
- 15:37Speaker 4: was I used to call him Cookie Junior, which is
- 15:39Speaker 4: the most random nickname ever. But every little thing he
- 15:42Speaker 4: would do, I would say, okay, Cookie Junior, and I'll
- 15:45Speaker 4: never get there's one piece of bread left or something
- 15:47Speaker 4: like this on the dinner table and he goes to
- 15:49Speaker 4: grab and I go too slow, Cookie Junior, and I
- 15:52Speaker 4: grabbed it now and he goes stop calling me Cookie Junior,
- 15:56Speaker 4: like lost to his shit, And I suddenly make it
- 15:59Speaker 4: more funny getting upset being called Cookie Junior. So that nickname,
- 16:04Speaker 4: you know, from sixth grade ive to eighth grade, I
- 16:06Speaker 4: really calling him Cookie Jr. But you gradually I just
- 16:09Speaker 4: started calling him Tom, which again in England culture, calling
- 16:14Speaker 4: your your parents by their first name is very sacrilege.
- 16:18Speaker 4: So I never forget the first time we go back
- 16:20Speaker 4: home and I started I'd been calling him Tom. I
- 16:23Speaker 4: say Tom in front of my like cousins, my family
- 16:25Speaker 4: were there. It was like a screeching hole to the
- 16:28Speaker 4: record player, like everyone just stopped talking.
- 16:30Speaker 2: What you say you called him by his first name.
- 16:34Speaker 4: Like they gave my dad a look like are you
- 16:35Speaker 4: gonna smack this kid? And like they didn't realize, Like
- 16:38Speaker 4: my dad again, good man.
- 16:39Speaker 2: He didn't care. I can call him Tom Wow. So
- 16:42Speaker 2: that's another just funny memory. But yeah, I just he's
- 16:44Speaker 2: a big guy too.
- 16:47Speaker 4: Yeah, especially again back then obviously I wasn't six two
- 16:50Speaker 4: sixty three then, so like, you know, my dad to
- 16:52Speaker 4: me looked seven feet tall. You remember you were a kid.
- 16:55Speaker 4: Everyone's so big. Even now, you know, my dad's way
- 16:59Speaker 4: past his proba. I still like I'm around Him'm like
- 17:02Speaker 4: this guy could still probably kick my ass. Just the
- 17:04Speaker 4: old man's strength. It's it's not gone yet. So yeah,
- 17:08Speaker 4: my dad, man, he's he's a great man.
- 17:10Speaker 2: People. There are fans of the show. They've met my dad.
- 17:12Speaker 2: You know, he loved coming up to our North Jersey shows.
- 17:15Speaker 2: He's been to our Philly show. So yeah, great, great
- 17:17Speaker 2: supporter of my life is my father. For sure.
- 17:19Speaker 1: You could put the Milmans inside Simon's family like little
- 17:28Speaker 1: nesting dolls.
- 17:31Speaker 3: Yeah, we are Putians compared to that's what.
- 17:35Speaker 4: British people are that we're huge, 're giant like vikings,
- 17:38Speaker 4: you know what I mean. It's our ancestors are big, big,
- 17:41Speaker 4: big people. So yeah, I would say, well, my mom
- 17:43Speaker 4: is what do you think you had? My mom's five ten,
- 17:45Speaker 4: five nine. Yeah, my dad was probably six too, so yeah,
- 17:50Speaker 4: I mean you met my brother.
- 17:51Speaker 2: My brother's probably six four. Definitely a very tall family.
- 17:55Speaker 5: Your dad has an elite nineties dad five, which I
- 17:59Speaker 5: can only is my too. I don't have My wrists
- 18:01Speaker 5: aren't thick enough to achieve dad nineties dad peak. But like,
- 18:06Speaker 5: huge guy like you, big asshead like you, and shaking
- 18:11Speaker 5: hands with him is like grabbing a bunch of bananas
- 18:13Speaker 5: like you. So like, yeah, he's he's got it all
- 18:16Speaker 5: as far as I'm concerned from a dad's strength, he's
- 18:20Speaker 5: like a spring that's pushed down. You know that he
- 18:22Speaker 5: could working out. I'll spring out at any moment. If
- 18:25Speaker 5: you call him. I can't wait to never call him
- 18:28Speaker 5: cookie Junior. I'll tell you that.
- 18:30Speaker 4: And he's very good. I would say, he's very like
- 18:33Speaker 4: man's man. So he eily hit the jack.
- 18:34Speaker 2: Butod he had three sons.
- 18:36Speaker 4: My mom, God bless her, is the most curly girl ever,
- 18:40Speaker 4: just dying to have a daughter. Couldn't have anyone further
- 18:42Speaker 4: away from like I have zero fashion sense seeing with
- 18:45Speaker 4: my brothers.
- 18:46Speaker 2: That woman loves shopping.
- 18:47Speaker 4: So my dad basically doesn't drink, never smoke, like, doesn't
- 18:51Speaker 4: do drugs, none of that stuff. His vice was sports,
- 18:54Speaker 4: like watching us play sports growing up. So like, even
- 18:57Speaker 4: thinking back, I'd play stupid ass street hockey, like a
- 19:00Speaker 4: little street hockey league. It'd be like sleeting thirty degrees out.
- 19:04Speaker 4: I would just see him in his trench coat behind
- 19:06Speaker 4: the net watching the game. It's just like that man
- 19:08Speaker 4: went to everything I played. So yeah, once again, very lucky.
- 19:11Speaker 4: And you know, it's it's one of those things you
- 19:13Speaker 4: get older, you kind of get it where it's like
- 19:16Speaker 4: I didn't get as a kid, like I alf the time,
- 19:18Speaker 4: I didn't want to be out there. It's like why
- 19:19Speaker 4: the fuck am I out here playing? And this man
- 19:22Speaker 4: would be there in the freezing cold, always watching, And
- 19:24Speaker 4: when you get older, it's like, oh, those those are
- 19:26Speaker 4: great days man, watching your kids, especially if your kids
- 19:29Speaker 4: are good at sports.
- 19:30Speaker 2: People tell me all the time, it's like.
- 19:31Speaker 4: The best you know enjoyment ever if you love sports
- 19:34Speaker 4: and your kids have somewhat semi talented at those said sports.
- 19:37Speaker 2: So yeah, my dad was very lucky.
- 19:39Speaker 4: My oldest brother played varsity soccer, my middle brother played rugby,
- 19:43Speaker 4: and ifoc.
- 19:44Speaker 2: I played all the sports. I loved sports growing up,
- 19:46Speaker 2: so yeah, he got it all.
- 19:48Speaker 4: And then, unfortunately, I think only one of us played
- 19:50Speaker 4: in college. My oldest brother played soccer, so it pretty
- 19:53Speaker 4: much ended after high school.
- 19:54Speaker 2: For my dad was sports.
- 19:56Speaker 1: Matt, It's interesting to me that your dad was not
- 19:59Speaker 1: into sport because my dad was not into sports at all,
- 20:03Speaker 1: but he understood how much I loved sports and was
- 20:11Speaker 1: crazy supportive of it in ways. That translated to me
- 20:19Speaker 1: with my kid because my dad like took me to
- 20:24Speaker 1: the Saint Louis Cardinals Kansas City Royals World Series because
- 20:30Speaker 1: my grandmother, who lived in Saint Louis, got tickets.
- 20:33Speaker 3: He didn't give a shit about that.
- 20:36Speaker 1: My first job at Pro Football Weekly, I was an
- 20:41Speaker 1: intern literally filing old clips into folders so they had
- 20:47Speaker 1: access to all of them, and would I would plan
- 20:51Speaker 1: to do a lot of the filing when they were
- 20:54Speaker 1: having their big editorial meeting inside the editor in chief's office,
- 20:59Speaker 1: and the file cabinets were outside the office, so I
- 21:02Speaker 1: would go to the filing there and I could hear
- 21:05Speaker 1: what they were planning, to see what they were doing
- 21:07Speaker 1: and if there was anything I could do, and they
- 21:09Speaker 1: were planning out the issue that was going to cover
- 21:13Speaker 1: the Hall of Fame inductions. And when the meeting ended,
- 21:17Speaker 1: I told one of the editors, Hey, you know, I'm
- 21:20Speaker 1: going away to the Hall of Fame with my dad
- 21:23Speaker 1: on a father son trip in Canton. If you guys
- 21:26Speaker 1: need a story from the Hall of Fame, I'm happy
- 21:30Speaker 1: to do it. And so they assigned me the story,
- 21:33Speaker 1: except I wasn't going to the Hall of Fame. My
- 21:37Speaker 1: dad and I weren't going away together that weekend. And
- 21:41Speaker 1: so I went home and told my dad, I'm like,
- 21:43Speaker 1: so good news, I got this assignment. I'm so excited
- 21:47Speaker 1: about it. I kind of need you to take me
- 21:51Speaker 1: and pay for the trip at the Hall of Fame
- 21:54Speaker 1: because I was eighteen years old at the time and
- 21:57Speaker 1: couldn't like really get there myself.
- 22:00Speaker 3: The guy did it. The guy did it. He did it.
- 22:02Speaker 1: When like every summer job, when you work in media,
- 22:05Speaker 1: you don't get paid so over the summer, like you
- 22:07Speaker 1: can either get the experience in media, or you can
- 22:11Speaker 1: get a job working somewhere like at the shoe store
- 22:14Speaker 1: or the pharmacy and get paid. Always understood I was
- 22:18Speaker 1: driven about sports and wanted to do it, always paid
- 22:21Speaker 1: for it. Cut to you know, twenty years later, I've
- 22:25Speaker 1: got a kid, my older son, not into sports at all,
- 22:30Speaker 1: loves magic gathering, loves dungeons and dragons, doesn't want to
- 22:33Speaker 1: do after school sports. This is what he wants to do.
- 22:36Speaker 1: And all of a sudden, my wife and I are
- 22:38Speaker 1: driving around every weekend at different tournaments, different events, all
- 22:41Speaker 1: these things, and we're both starting to complain about it
- 22:46Speaker 1: a little bit because it's not like the mainstream sports thing.
- 22:51Speaker 1: And then my wife looks at me one day and
- 22:53Speaker 1: one day and goes, oh my god, this is his
- 22:56Speaker 1: soccer like, we have to do it even though there's
- 22:59Speaker 1: nothinganctioned and it's not official, because it's no different than
- 23:04Speaker 1: if we spent every weekend going to fucking Freehold, New
- 23:06Speaker 1: Jersey for lacrosse tournaments.
- 23:10Speaker 2: That's right, oh.
- 23:11Speaker 5: Father, that your stuff. Also, Canton's like four hundred miles
- 23:15Speaker 5: away from your house. And he was just like regulators,
- 23:18Speaker 5: mound up. I'm in, Yeah, sounds good like good for him.
- 23:21Speaker 3: We went. We totally just went. Didn't even question it.
- 23:24Speaker 1: Uh. I think I did the story about Franco Harris,
- 23:28Speaker 1: Good days, Good Days, good, dads.
- 23:32Speaker 4: I'll do one game story because this is like, to me,
- 23:34Speaker 4: the biggest one that changed my life in many ways.
- 23:36Speaker 4: Where it's my earliest memory of sports betting. So it's
- 23:40Speaker 4: Super Bowl and two.
- 23:41Speaker 2: Thousand, I believe. So it's the Titans Rams.
- 23:44Speaker 4: And again I knew nothing about sports betting, never never
- 23:50Speaker 4: never seen it before.
- 23:51Speaker 2: I never heard about it.
- 23:52Speaker 4: And my dad said to be my brother, do you
- 23:55Speaker 4: guys want to pick a side for this game? And
- 23:59Speaker 4: there's a spread, so everyone knew the Rams were the
- 24:01Speaker 4: better team. And I was a big, big Steve McNair fan.
- 24:05Speaker 4: So my brother was like, yeah, I like the Rams.
- 24:07Speaker 4: And I said, well, I'll take Steve McNair like I
- 24:10Speaker 4: love the Titans. And my dad said, well, there's a spread,
- 24:12Speaker 4: so you get seven and a half points to start
- 24:14Speaker 4: the game. And again as a little kid, I could
- 24:17Speaker 4: not wrap my head around it where it's like so
- 24:18Speaker 4: I'm already up a touchdown and a half.
- 24:20Speaker 2: I don't. I couldn't get it.
- 24:22Speaker 4: So again, if anyone remembers that game, it's I think
- 24:25Speaker 4: twenty three seventeen. Again, I have the Titans. They get
- 24:29Speaker 4: tackled at the one by the Rams. My brother starts
- 24:32Speaker 4: going absolutely crazy, and my dad basically pulled the not
- 24:35Speaker 4: so fast league Corso said, Simon here won the bet.
- 24:38Speaker 4: The spread was seven and a half and gave me
- 24:40Speaker 4: the one dollar and the rest is history.
- 24:42Speaker 2: Chat.
- 24:43Speaker 4: I literally got the itch from that day forward. And
- 24:45Speaker 4: even I remember being, you know, in middle school and
- 24:50Speaker 4: the Lakers and the Sixers in the finals. I made
- 24:52Speaker 4: a bet with a buddy who's a diehard this biggest
- 24:54Speaker 4: scumback guy was.
- 24:55Speaker 2: He was diehard Sixers fan. Six Ers win Game one.
- 24:58Speaker 4: I said, all right, if I'm right the Lakers win
- 25:00Speaker 4: this series, you buy me cookies every day for the
- 25:02Speaker 4: rest of the week. Again living the dream at that age.
- 25:06Speaker 4: And yeah, just a little things like that. That's how
- 25:08Speaker 4: I got a sports better And again, like we're talking
- 25:10Speaker 4: about Chad, very supportive parents, Like I told my parents.
- 25:13Speaker 2: I was gonna work in TV. They support it.
- 25:15Speaker 4: I told them that I was gonna be a sports
- 25:18Speaker 4: better runner and working you know, a weird life.
- 25:22Speaker 2: Supportive. It's been very, very.
- 25:24Speaker 4: Lucky, and obviously you know that's that's what I kind
- 25:27Speaker 4: of I feel like Chad's in the same spot here
- 25:28Speaker 4: where it's like, you know, our parents who love us
- 25:31Speaker 4: and support us. It is a really big blessing in life,
- 25:35Speaker 4: and I actually, un fortunately I've been in a life
- 25:36Speaker 4: to have that.
- 25:38Speaker 1: Matt Mitchell told his dad, I'm going to grow a
- 25:40Speaker 1: mustache when Kren goes away for ten days, I'm going
- 25:45Speaker 1: to grow a mustache. And he goes son, I'm not
- 25:48Speaker 1: really thinking that's a great idea, but it's your life.
- 25:50Speaker 1: I want you to make your choices. It's your body.
- 25:54Speaker 1: You do what you think is best.
- 25:56Speaker 5: Oh my god, that just reminded me of a story
- 25:58Speaker 5: he'd actually love. Coming back from the University of Missouri,
- 26:03Speaker 5: home the alma mater of Mike Jones who made that
- 26:07Speaker 5: year two thousand Super Bowl tackle to clinch the Tramants
- 26:11Speaker 5: Go Mike Jones coming back from college. My dad had
- 26:15Speaker 5: booked me a flight to come back from Columbia to Rochester,
- 26:18Speaker 5: A terrible kind of situation to try to figure out.
- 26:21Speaker 5: So I'd fly, say Lewis to you know, have a
- 26:23Speaker 5: layover or whatever. But this one he's like, Hey, remember
- 26:27Speaker 5: this flight, you actually have to go to baggage. I
- 26:30Speaker 5: booked it on two airlines, that's two one way tickets,
- 26:32Speaker 5: so you have to go get your bag, bring it over,
- 26:35Speaker 5: and then check back into this other flight. Okay, this
- 26:37Speaker 5: is an unusual situation, like, yeah, it sounds good. I
- 26:40Speaker 5: obviously forget all about that and leave my luggage in
- 26:45Speaker 5: a you know, at wherever, like bwi whatever fucking layover
- 26:48Speaker 5: I had and get home and there's no bag. I
- 26:51Speaker 5: had also grown, because I was like I was nineteen
- 26:54Speaker 5: or whatever. I grew like a little go tea soul
- 26:56Speaker 5: patch situation and looked embarrassingly bad, which made him real mad.
- 27:03Speaker 5: But I was. I thought that was It was a
- 27:04Speaker 5: hoot that he that he hated it. And when I
- 27:07Speaker 5: told him I missed that back, he was like, I'm
- 27:09Speaker 5: gonna have to call the air I gotta get this
- 27:12Speaker 5: bag on its own flight. He was like, god damn it.
- 27:15Speaker 5: And I remember being like mm hmm, I'll be right
- 27:18Speaker 5: back and going into the bathroom and shaving it off,
- 27:21Speaker 5: and his anger going down by like ninety percent.
- 27:25Speaker 2: Because he knew I could.
- 27:26Speaker 5: I was trying to meet him halfway, and that was uh.
- 27:29Speaker 5: I remember that that him his face being like all right,
- 27:31Speaker 5: all right, at least I don't have to help out
- 27:33Speaker 5: a guy who looks like a complete asshole. So that
- 27:35Speaker 5: was that was a lot of fun.
- 27:37Speaker 3: I do feel like.
- 27:39Speaker 1: The signs of a good dad are they are angriest
- 27:45Speaker 1: about the stupidest stuff and least angry about the big stuff.
- 27:51Speaker 1: You know, Like when I get into college, my senior year,
- 27:55Speaker 1: me and my closest friend went to we were at
- 28:00Speaker 1: like another buddy's house, and this was the house where
- 28:04Speaker 1: this was the drinking guy's house.
- 28:06Speaker 3: Right, there was a group of us who were.
- 28:07Speaker 1: Like not big drinkers in a group that were big drinkers,
- 28:09Speaker 1: and like we thought they were cool and they were
- 28:12Speaker 1: like practiced drinkers, right, And so he broke out the
- 28:15Speaker 1: Jack Daniels, and me and my buddy each did like
- 28:19Speaker 1: an unhealthy dangerous amount of shots in a very short
- 28:22Speaker 1: amount of time, to the point where when we ended
- 28:25Speaker 1: up at the local Denny's that night where we always
- 28:28Speaker 1: ended up where half of my high school ended up,
- 28:31Speaker 1: I puked all over the table. To bring it back
- 28:33Speaker 1: around to the beginning, right, they had to drag me out.
- 28:37Speaker 1: They take me to my house, and as you guys know,
- 28:41Speaker 1: I have to wear very specific contact lenses that required
- 28:44Speaker 1: a plunger to be removed because I have a degenerative
- 28:48Speaker 1: I disease. Okay, so my friends have me sitting upright
- 28:54Speaker 1: in the bathroom, unlike the toilet that is, you know,
- 28:57Speaker 1: the seat is down. They're trying to get my content
- 29:00Speaker 1: out with the plunger, except they keep missing and they're
- 29:03Speaker 1: pulling my eye likely you can see it, right. So
- 29:07Speaker 1: then they let go and meet and I fall face forward.
- 29:09Speaker 1: My head hits the porcelain sink. They can't get the
- 29:14Speaker 1: contact lenses out, and I've got puke all over my pants.
- 29:18Speaker 1: And so they get me into my bedroom and they're
- 29:21Speaker 1: standing around me in a circle, and they're trying to
- 29:24Speaker 1: get me to get my pants off, and I won't
- 29:25Speaker 1: do it, and I keep yelling, I'm not taking my
- 29:28Speaker 1: pants off until you take your pants off. And when
- 29:31Speaker 1: they're standing around me about seven eight nine dudes with
- 29:35Speaker 1: their pants off in the circle, Me in the center.
- 29:39Speaker 3: With my pants off.
- 29:42Speaker 1: That's when my parents get home and my mom looks
- 29:47Speaker 1: at my dad and she goes, I think this is
- 29:50Speaker 1: on you. Everybody leaves. My dad gets me in bed.
- 29:54Speaker 1: I'm puking until about four in the morning. In my
- 29:58Speaker 1: by the way Simon Philadelphia, seventy six ers garbage can.
- 30:04Speaker 1: My dad is sitting with me the entire night. I
- 30:07Speaker 1: finally pass out, except I have the seven am shift
- 30:12Speaker 1: at Parkway Drugs Pharmacy in Glencoe. The next day, it's
- 30:16Speaker 1: a Saturday, six about six forty. My dad gets me up,
- 30:24Speaker 1: drives me because I'm still a little bit out of it,
- 30:27Speaker 1: drives me to the pharmacy. He's like, if you're gonna
- 30:31Speaker 1: go out, you're still gonna have to go to work.
- 30:33Speaker 1: And I did that shift for about five hours until
- 30:37Speaker 1: the pharmacist stating home and he's like, you're of no
- 30:41Speaker 1: use to me. But I did also once see my
- 30:45Speaker 1: dad while he was driving to work, driving me downtown.
- 30:49Speaker 1: He was going to work, I had to go to
- 30:50Speaker 1: an appointment, pulled over to the side of the road,
- 30:54Speaker 1: didn't even step out of the car, pute leaned over,
- 30:57Speaker 1: he wasn't feeling well, puked, got back in the car,
- 31:01Speaker 1: drove downtown and went back to work.
- 31:05Speaker 5: Now that's that's real dad behavior, That silver back dad behavior.
- 31:10Speaker 3: Yeah, that's silverback dad strength.
- 31:13Speaker 5: I like the idea of your dad coming home to
- 31:15Speaker 5: that scene and and right away being like, oh, I
- 31:17Speaker 5: better get these pants off. You gotta gotta fit in,
- 31:19Speaker 5: gotta gotta let's uh, let's get these pants off so
- 31:23Speaker 5: we can we can talk some sense into my son Yeah, incredible.
- 31:27Speaker 5: I do want to share that my speaking of just
- 31:33Speaker 5: getting into whatever your kids are getting into, my dad
- 31:35Speaker 5: did eventually become a big sports fan. I was able
- 31:37Speaker 5: to drag him into into becoming a fan. One of
- 31:40Speaker 5: the ways I did that was becoming just a massive
- 31:43Speaker 5: Buffalo Bills fan growing up in Rochester until he eventually
- 31:48Speaker 5: was like, wow, shit, as long as he's super into it,
- 31:50Speaker 5: I'm gonna get super into it. But the NFL had
- 31:53Speaker 5: blackout restrictions from nineteen seventy three to twenty fourteen, where
- 31:57Speaker 5: if a game didn't sell out, it was blacked out
- 31:59Speaker 5: with seventy five miles to the stadium. That really impacted
- 32:03Speaker 5: Buffalo a lot one because it was, you know, an
- 32:05Speaker 5: economically depressed area that wasn't particularly packed with people. They
- 32:09Speaker 5: had the second or third largest stadium in terms of
- 32:12Speaker 5: the number of seats they'd have to sell for a
- 32:14Speaker 5: long time, and then they changed a bunch of the
- 32:17Speaker 5: rules that it was pretty dreadful. So we had three choices.
- 32:21Speaker 5: We could listen to the game and the immortal Van
- 32:24Speaker 5: Miller on the radio, which was great because of the
- 32:26Speaker 5: timeless and evocative nature of audio, which which definitely gave
- 32:29Speaker 5: me a love affair with the radio.
- 32:31Speaker 2: Good afternoon everyone. This is Van Miller, and the road.
- 32:34Speaker 5: To the Super Bowl goes through Orchard Park, New York.
- 32:38Speaker 5: Or for a little while, there was a loophole where
- 32:41Speaker 5: some bars had satellite feeds, so there was a couple
- 32:44Speaker 5: of bars across town that you could go and get
- 32:46Speaker 5: like essentially a legal stream of the game and watch it.
- 32:49Speaker 5: But it was hard to like it. It's not going
- 32:51Speaker 5: to go and have fifteen La bat blues with his
- 32:53Speaker 5: fucking son and drive them home, So it was hard
- 32:56Speaker 5: to find a reason to take a tween to a
- 32:59Speaker 5: bar and kill all that time. But he would do it.
- 33:01Speaker 5: And then the third option was, which he would do
- 33:03Speaker 5: quite often, if I really wanted to go, he'd drive
- 33:06Speaker 5: me in like an hour plus across the county line.
- 33:09Speaker 5: He'd drive due east into Wayne County until we crossed
- 33:13Speaker 5: over into the area of the Syracuse affiliates, which would
- 33:16Speaker 5: then play it. But there's so much nothing in between
- 33:20Speaker 5: that he would just go up to one of these
- 33:22Speaker 5: shitty roadside like motels, talk to the guy in the
- 33:25Speaker 5: front and basically convince him that him and him and
- 33:29Speaker 5: his team are trying to watch the Bills game. Can
- 33:32Speaker 5: we just get the hotel him for three and a
- 33:34Speaker 5: half hours, and those guys didn't ask a lot of questions.
- 33:37Speaker 5: And we would go in and we'd watch the game
- 33:39Speaker 5: on top of the duvet, and we'd bring in like
- 33:42Speaker 5: a picnic. We'd eat the you know, we'd eat the food,
- 33:45Speaker 5: watch the game, and then drive home. And during one
- 33:48Speaker 5: of those games, I'll never forget it. September twenty first,
- 33:51Speaker 5: nineteen ninety seven, the Bills are down twenty six to
- 33:55Speaker 5: nothing in the first half to Jim Harbaugh's Indianapolis called
- 34:01Speaker 5: and it was notable because it was to me it
- 34:04Speaker 5: was the first game that Jim Kelly, who just retired
- 34:07Speaker 5: was going to go back to Buffalo as an announcer
- 34:09Speaker 5: for NBC and looking at him and being like, this
- 34:11Speaker 5: guy is so fucking old and used up. This is
- 34:14Speaker 5: like the oldest guy I've ever seen on TV. Jim
- 34:16Speaker 5: Caller was thirty seven years old at the time. Like really,
