- 0:08The Book of Ruth begins in dark days, but even
- 0:12in the darkness, God was at work. Through loss,
- 0:15uncertainty, and unexpected turns, we discover
- 0:19a beautiful story of grace, redemption,
- 0:22and hope. Join Scott Pauley for this new study, The Gospel
- 0:26According to Ruth. Light for Dark Days.
- 0:38My grace is sufficient for thee, for my strength is
- 0:41made perfect in weakness. That's what
- 0:45the Lord God said to the Apostle Paul at the weakest moment
- 0:49of his life. And I want you to know that scripture is
- 0:52given to show us the divine sufficiency, that we are
- 0:56not enough but the Lord is enough,
- 1:00that, that men are not enough but God
- 1:03always is. We return today to Ruth chapter number 2
- 1:07and to this amazing picture of coming under our Lord's
- 1:11wings. This is really what it means to, to put your
- 1:15trust in the Lord, to have confidence in him. We run
- 1:19to him, we hide in him, And he shelters us.
- 1:22We learned in our last study of Ruth chapter number 2 that
- 1:26to come under his wings means that he protects
- 1:31us. He is, he's caring for us.
- 1:34And by the way, there is no safe place if you're
- 1:38not a saved person. If you don't know the Lord Jesus as your
- 1:42personal Savior, there's nowhere you can hide when the Lord comes back someday,
- 1:46when judgment falls on this earth. There will be nowhere
- 1:51to hide. In fact, Jesus said that on that day, men are going to cry
- 1:54out for the rocks to fall on them to hide
- 1:58them from the wrath of the Lamb. But nothing will hide us
- 2:02from the wrath of God on that day. You cannot hide from
- 2:06God, but you can hide in God. And that's what it
- 2:09means to come under his wings. It means to have protection. And I want to
- 2:13just remind you that the world has no wings. There's no safety
- 2:16in this world. There's no protection for your soul, for your
- 2:20eternity in this world. None of that in Moab,
- 2:23friends. No, you must come to the Lord God and
- 2:27trust him, and in him you find protection.
- 2:31But then, this is very important, because God doesn't just want you to survive,
- 2:35he wants you to live in his sufficiency. God didn't give just enough grace
- 2:38for you to eke by and endure. No, he gives
- 2:41the, the kind of sufficient grace so that you can press on,
- 2:45so that you'll have all that you need in him. So secondly, I want you
- 2:49to know that under his wings, not only is there protection, but it
- 2:53means provision. You see,
- 2:56to come under the wings of someone means that they're going to nourish
- 3:00you, they're going to, to meet your deepest needs.
- 3:04And you find that in Ruth chapter number 2. He says— Boaz says to
- 3:09Ruth in verse number 12, the Lord recompense thy work.
- 3:12And a full reward be given thee of the Lord God of
- 3:16Israel, under whose wings thou art come to trust. Now, was Boaz
- 3:20going to be a blessing to her? Yes. And the verses that follow,
- 3:23he's going to give the handfuls of purpose, he's going to reach her parched corn.
- 3:27There are going to be many blessings that come from Boaz's hand. But I think
- 3:30this is very important. Though there may be many channels, there's only one source.
- 3:34And Boaz is acknowledging that all of the sufficiency is
- 3:38not from him, it is rather from the Lord.
- 3:42Every blessing that comes into our life,
- 3:45though it may come through many means and God may use many delivery boys,
- 3:50it always comes from God's good hand.
- 3:53James said it this way in James 1: Every good and every perfect
- 3:57gift cometh down from above, from the Father
- 4:02of lights, in whom is no variableness neither shadow of turning. Now, why is it
- 4:05important to say that it comes down, because it reminds us to look up.
- 4:09If you're not careful, you start looking around you, you start looking to
- 4:13people for their sustaining help and for their
- 4:16sustenance. No, don't ever do that. You start leaning on
- 4:20men, men will disappoint you. That's a, that's a terrible way to live.
- 4:24And God will let all the crutches get knocked out from under you so
- 4:28you'll learn to lean on him alone. And don't lean on your own understanding,
- 4:31lean on the Lord. Keep your eyes on God. He is
- 4:35the great provider. He is Jehovah Jireh, and the
- 4:39provision always comes from the God of all sufficiency.
- 4:44Read through Ruth chapter 2 again. Look at all these terms and the tone
- 4:48through the passage. Only God can give a full
- 4:51reward. Only God can give a true recompense.
- 4:55That is not in man's power to do. I said to you in
- 4:59our last study that this particular picture
- 5:03of coming under the wings of something or someone is
- 5:07used throughout scripture. Let me give you a little sampling of what I'm talking about
- 5:10today. May I— go with me to the Psalms. Let's compare scripture with scripture,
- 5:14and you will see this protection and provision element
- 5:18in each of these places. For example, David writes in Psalm 36 and verse
- 5:22number 7, how excellent is thy lovingkindness, O God!
- 5:26Therefore the children of men put their trust
- 5:30under the shadow of thy wings. They shall be abundantly
- 5:34satisfied with the fatness of thy house, and thou shalt make them
- 5:38drink of the rivers of thy pleasure. What is he saying? He is saying
- 5:42that there is safety and sufficiency, there is protection,
- 5:46and there is provision by trusting in the Lord.
- 5:50Again, Psalm 57, verse 1, he writes from a cave,
- 5:54be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me.
- 5:58For my soul trusteth in thee. Yea, in the shadow
- 6:02of thy wings will I make my refuge until
- 6:07these calamities be overpassed. He's running from
- 6:10Saul, but he's hiding in the Lord. And in the Lord he
- 6:15finds both the, the shadow of the wings, the refuge,
- 6:19the protection, but also the provision that he needed.
- 6:22Again, Psalm 61 and verse number 4: I will abide
- 6:26in thy tabernacle forever. I will trust in the COVID
- 6:31or the covering, of thy wings. Selah.
- 6:34The idea here is we find our refuge in the Lord. Just across
- 6:39the page, Psalm 63, verse 7: Because thou hast been my help, he writes,
- 6:44therefore in the shadow of thy wings will
- 6:48I rejoice. Isn't that beautiful? We're not just safe, we're singing.
- 6:52We don't just have refuge, we're rejoicing. By the way, when David wrote
- 6:55Psalm 63, he He was in the wilderness of Judah. Think about this.
- 6:59When you're out in the desert, you're in the wilderness, do you know what you
- 7:02need? You need some shadow friends. You need a hiding place.
- 7:05You need a refuge. And where did he find that? He found
- 7:09that by hiding in the Lord. It's the same picture
- 7:14we read in our last study in Psalm 91 of coming under the wings
- 7:17of our great God, because there you
- 7:20find protection. And there you find provision.
- 7:25Now, can I give you a little picture here of why this imagery is
- 7:28so vital and what it would have meant to these Jewish
- 7:32believers? Really, it's twofold. On one hand,
- 7:36it's a picture of a mother, like a mother hen.
- 7:39Remember Jesus said, oh Jerusalem, Jerusalem,
- 7:42how often would I have gathered thee as a hen would gather chicks, but ye
- 7:47would not? That was what he was saying. I would like you to come under
- 7:50my wings, but you, you ran the other direction.
- 7:53So it's a picture of the motherly heart of our Heavenly
- 7:57Father. Can I ask you a question? Who gave mothers their
- 8:01mother's heart? The Heavenly Father did. You see, he loves
- 8:06and cares. He is strong as a father, tender as a
- 8:10mother, nurturing and nourishing. But there's a second picture of this that
- 8:14Israel would have immediately seen with this phrase, under his wings.
- 8:18It's not only a picture of the motherly heart of God, it is also a
- 8:22picture of the mercy seat. Do you remember that mercy seat,
- 8:25the place where the blood was sprinkled,
- 8:29the place where the Shekinah glory came down, the place where they met
- 8:32with God, that the safe place?
- 8:36Now this is very important. Over top that mercy seat, there were
- 8:40cherubim, these angelic beings carved
- 8:44And if you looked at the mercy seat, you would have seen their wings were
- 8:47outstretched. Literally, the mercy seat was under those
- 8:52wings. It was the place of protection and provision.
- 8:56It was the place of safety and security and sufficiency.
- 9:00You see the picture here of our salvation. Run to
- 9:03the Lord today. Don't run from him. Run to the Lord today.
- 9:07Don't run to men. Run to the Lord today. And under his wings
- 9:12you can trust.
