- 0:05hey everyone
- 0:05welcome back to Melody's 15 years
- 0:07we are on episode 9 and today
- 0:09we're gonna talk about what was that first summer like
- 0:12and some other fun things that are going on in summer
- 0:14so this is gonna be a very summer focused episode
- 0:17we're technically still in may
- 0:19but it's right around the corner
- 0:20it's gonna be here before we know it
- 0:22so welcome melody
- 0:24thanks
- 0:26alright so let's talk about that first summer
- 0:28you had your plaque done in
- 0:30what month
- 0:32April the end of April April 21st, 2011
- 0:36okay so by May
- 0:38how were things going
- 0:40not that great I was still having pain
- 0:43um I was still having problems sleeping
- 0:47um I was wearing an eye patch
- 0:49because the sunlight was intense
- 0:52um I hadn't noticed
- 0:57that before I was diagnosed
- 0:59I would squint a lot with my left eye
- 1:02I would keep it closed a lot when I was in the sun
- 1:05and then after the you know
- 1:07the plaque it kept going
- 1:08and I thought oh this
- 1:09maybe there's some correlation
- 1:10to light sensitivity in that eye
- 1:13so I did wear an eye patch for that reason
- 1:17but I also wore an eye patch
- 1:18because I had really bad double vision
- 1:21so it was making driving very difficult
- 1:25um I'm
- 1:27I I don't even think I had really
- 1:29started driving very far yet
- 1:31because the double vision was bad
- 1:33um but sunlight
- 1:36it was painful it wasn't just
- 1:38it wasn't just I couldn't see
- 1:40it was painful so I kept my eye closed or patched a lot
- 1:45which is um
- 1:49great timing
- 1:50and I hate to say great timing about something terrible
- 1:53but great timing because
- 1:55we're gonna talk about Eye Patch Day for just a minute
- 1:57so Eye Patch Day is in may
- 2:00it moves it's not always the same date
- 2:02um I think it's always
- 2:04what is it the third weekend
- 2:05maybe third Friday
- 2:07third Friday and into the weekend
- 2:08yeah yeah
- 2:09and it's a little confusing cause it's Eye Patch Day
- 2:11it's the third Friday but yet it kind of goes Friday
- 2:14Saturday Sunday
- 2:15it's a all weekend thing so we say Eye Patch Day
- 2:18but then we do it all weekend
- 2:19so um
- 2:20just FYI it's a all weekend thing
- 2:23so when was the first time that you heard about
- 2:24Eye Patch Day
- 2:27um 2000
- 2:28when I looked back just recently
- 2:29and then 2,014 was when we brought it over
- 2:33um I believe Christine with Ocumel UK
- 2:37did started on the 2013
- 2:40so um
- 2:43I thought it was a great thing and I thought
- 2:45why are we not doing this in the United States
- 2:47so um
- 2:48we did it in 2,013 was our first year
- 2:52and it was it was a pretty good hit people uh
- 2:55it resonated with a lot of patients
- 2:58and a lot of patient families
- 2:59because it was a way to kind of show support
- 3:02but it was a what it was meant for
- 3:05was for people
- 3:07to be challenged to wear an eye patch for a day
- 3:09and do normal activities
- 3:11to see what it's like living with just one eye
- 3:14or vision in just one eye
- 3:16because the vision changes when it's just
- 3:19when it's monocular just one eye
- 3:23so everything kind of changes then
- 3:25uh and when people wear an eyepatch and they can only
- 3:31use one eye
- 3:33they kind of get a sense of what we live with every day
- 3:36so that was the initial reasoning behind Eyepatch Day
- 3:43yeah and it is quite the experience
- 3:45um honestly
- 3:46just putting it on
- 3:47and having something uncomfortable stuck to your face
- 3:49is is annoying enough
- 3:50much less the vision issues
- 3:53I had a really hard time when I was diagnosed
- 3:55because we didn't have eye patches
- 3:57like what we order now you got them from the
- 4:01uh
- 4:02from the drugstore and they were cone shaped
- 4:05which is fine if you don't wear glasses
- 4:06but if you wear glasses and you've got a cone
- 4:09then your glasses are like this
- 4:11and then it messes up the prescription in your good eye
- 4:14that you can see out of because
- 4:16your glasses are not aligned anymore'cause
- 4:19if you move your glasses it messes up um
- 4:23it messes up where your eye is seeing
- 4:25and it messes up your vision
- 4:26so it was it was extremely difficult to find a patch
- 4:29that would fit underneath your
- 4:31your glasses that was comfortable
- 4:33and in the summertime
- 4:34they're extremely hot cause they hold all that heat in
- 4:38especially if you're trying to keep light out
- 4:41so they are not comfortable
- 4:44um
- 4:46and I don't know if you remember
- 4:47but it was I think around the first week of may
- 4:50it was right after I was diagnosed and treated
- 4:52we went to the Outer Banks for a family vacation
- 4:56with my sister and her family
- 4:58and I couldn't get in the water
- 5:01I couldn't get a lot of sand on me
- 5:04because they were worried of anything going in my eye
- 5:06cause my eye was still pretty raw
- 5:08where they had taken out the stitches
- 5:10it still was not not
- 5:12it was not attractive
- 5:14so um
- 5:16so I did wear an eye patch a lot
- 5:18which was kind of fitting
- 5:19cause we were on the Outer Banks
- 5:20which is real pirate theme
- 5:22so people just thought I was being funny
- 5:24wearing a pirate eye patch on my eye
- 5:26cause I was in the Outer Banks
- 5:27but I was really wearing it because the sand
- 5:30I had to keep sand out I had to keep the light out
- 5:33my eye was still not doing well
- 5:36it was still healing and it
- 5:38it was a different experience
- 5:41um cause I'm not
- 5:43that's not usually who I am at the beach
- 5:44I'm usually in the water walking on the beach
- 5:46I'm I'm not just sitting under an umbrella
- 5:50observing so it was a
- 5:52it was kind of hard to get used to doing it differently
- 5:56so what you're saying is
- 5:58eye patches have come a long way
- 6:00they have come a long way yes
- 6:03yeah they're a lot more comfortable now
- 6:07yeah definitely
- 6:09so that's very cool
- 6:09it's cool to see progress being made in
- 6:12in research and all of that
- 6:14but even
- 6:14just something that sounds simple
- 6:16to someone who's not wearing the eye patch
- 6:18but that all the you know
- 6:21ingenuity they're putting into eye patches cause
- 6:22it is really a big deal when you're the one wearing it
- 6:25there's a bunch of people that are making them
- 6:27hand making them and they make them out of leather
- 6:30and they make them really small
- 6:31and they really there's a lot of people
- 6:33doing a lot of things with eye patches
- 6:35right now where you can get them decorated
- 6:37um I
- 6:38and I don't mean like how we decorate for Eye Patch Day
- 6:41but I mean very nicely
- 6:42like leather tooled and painted or
- 6:44or some some other kind of a
- 6:47artwork on them where they're really very pretty
- 6:50and there's a lot of people um
- 6:52we've had her on our podcast
- 6:54Carrie Younger-Howard
- 6:56she does she has a
- 6:57her TikTok thing is Eye Patch Proudly
- 7:00and she does not cover her eye
- 7:03she does not wear a prosthetic
- 7:05she wears eye patches
- 7:06and she coordinates them with her outfit
- 7:08so it it's become much more acceptable
- 7:12maybe is even the right word
- 7:13where people don't just think you're being silly
- 7:15they think oh
- 7:16you've got a problem with your eye
- 7:18um when I did it
- 7:19people thought I was just being funny
- 7:21and trying to make fun of pirates
- 7:24right so for that first summer
- 7:28you had to wear an eye patch
- 7:29what about let's talk about sunglasses too
- 7:32um sunglasses were a big help um
- 7:35as far as keeping the light out
- 7:37um but for me
- 7:40sunglasses and I have a hard time
- 7:42because if they're very dark
- 7:44I can't see cause my eyes don't
- 7:47don't see in the dark
- 7:48so I have some kind of a pupil reaction thing
- 7:50so
- 7:51it's very difficult for me to wear sunglasses and see
- 7:54but I had to wear sunglasses
- 7:56cause the light was so strong
- 7:58even my good eye that was not affected would tear
- 8:01I would get tears steaming down my face from the sun
- 8:04so I had to wear sunglasses
- 8:06so it was a kind of a love hate relationship with it
- 8:09but I needed them
- 8:11or else I just look like I was crying all the time
- 8:14and I couldn't see or I had to have sunglasses on
- 8:17and then I really I couldn't really see
- 8:20so it was just kind of a big mess
- 8:22but I needed to have sunglasses on to protect my eyes
- 8:26but also to um
- 8:29to shield the light cause
- 8:31the light sensitivity was ridiculous
- 8:34and if nobody has had light sensitivity
- 8:38it's painful it's not just annoying
- 8:41I mean some people will put on sunglasses
- 8:42I can't stand the sunlight
- 8:44it hurts my eyes but there's a different level of hurt
- 8:48and coming out of having plaque radiation
- 8:51it was a painful
- 8:54someone stabbing me with a fork in the eye pain
- 8:57and and it was not
- 8:59it was not tolerable
- 9:01so sunglasses were an absolute must
- 9:04how long did that last
- 9:08probably three months for me
- 9:09it lasted about three months
- 9:11and then I slowly kind of weaned myself and um
- 9:15I still had light sensitivity for quite a few years
- 9:18and I
- 9:20I think about it
- 9:20I think I was probably around four or five years out
- 9:23when I finally could just
- 9:25not have to wear sunglasses outside anymore
- 9:28mm hmm
- 9:31yeah so we talked about Eye Patch Day
- 9:34so let's talk real quick about Sunglasses Day
- 9:37because that's coming up in June
- 9:38that's next month
- 9:40so we are gonna do a sunglasses contest
- 9:44because our um
- 9:47tagline for Sunglasses Day this year is
- 9:49awareness looks good on everyone
- 9:50so tell us a little bit about
- 9:52what is the point of Sunglasses Day
- 9:54where where did that come from
- 9:57Sunglasses Day is a national day that
- 9:59um we just found
- 10:01it wasn't anything that we made
- 10:02it was something that the eye industry made
- 10:04and it's a day to promote sunglasses awareness
- 10:08why you need sunglasses why you should wear them
- 10:10why children should wear them
- 10:12um
- 10:13growing up in Arizona
- 10:14we use sunglasses for fashion statements
- 10:17not for actual shielding our eyes from the sun
- 10:20which is kind of silly
- 10:22but I didn't grow up wearing sunglasses
- 10:25um it just wasn't a thing that we did
- 10:27you know if we wanted to look cool for a day
- 10:29we might put on some sunglasses
- 10:31but it was not it was not something that was common um
- 10:36but
- 10:36so it's to promote wearing sunglasses for eye safety
- 10:40eye health um
- 10:43people have gotten their eye
- 10:45the surface of their eyes sunburned
- 10:48it's very painful um
- 10:50if you get have ever gotten your eyelid sunburned
- 10:52that's also very painful um
- 10:54and and it does happen um
- 10:56there was a Anderson Cooper a few years ago
- 11:01was talking about having um
- 11:04getting his eye his eyeball sunburned
- 11:06I believe it was Anderson Cooper
- 11:08and people started talking about getting
- 11:10skin cancer on your eye
- 11:12it's like you can't get skin cancer on your eye
- 11:14it's completely it's a
- 11:15two different things but you can
- 11:19you can get ocular melanoma on your
- 11:21the surface of your eye which is conjunctival melanoma
- 11:25and that is known to be caused by sunlight
- 11:28so you wanna protect your eyes because
- 11:31you know not only could you get cancer
- 11:35on the surface of your eye
- 11:36but on your eyelids
- 11:37there's a lot of people get squamous or basal cell
- 11:40not to mention melanoma on their eyelids
- 11:43and that's some painful surgery
- 11:45to get that taken care of
- 11:46it's not it's not fun um
- 11:48and I don't think there's enough awareness about that
- 11:50about how sun damages your eyes
- 11:53people think oh
- 11:53it only damages and gives me wrinkles
- 11:56it's so much it's so much more than that
- 11:58it's a
- 12:00it you need to shield your eye from the sun rays
- 12:02because it's not good for your eyes
- 12:04sunlight also causes cataract
- 12:07so anything you can do to cover your eyes
- 12:09you're better off
- 12:11yeah and sometimes it's hard when it's so hot
- 12:14I feel like when I put sunglasses on
- 12:17my nose start like
- 12:18the bridge of my nose starts sweating
- 12:19and then I just wanna take them off
- 12:21and it's
- 12:22it's a commitment to wear those things sometimes
- 12:24and I know people that are like just
- 12:26they live in them and they're like oh
- 12:27I can't take them off and I'm not that person
- 12:30I have a very hard time cause I feel like you
- 12:33I'm in the dark and I can't see
- 12:34and then I feel like my face is sweating
- 12:36and I'm like I hate it
- 12:39whoa it's terrible
- 12:40and for those of us that can't
- 12:44that sunglasses are hard
- 12:46you can get a UV coating on your regular lenses
- 12:48my lenses have a UV coating
- 12:51so I feel like I've at least done a little bit
- 12:53or something
- 12:55but sunglasses are hard and I wish
- 12:58I wish I could be that person
- 12:59that could wear them all the time
- 13:00and I encourage you start young
- 13:03if you have children get them started young
- 13:05because everything
- 13:09that you grow up with becomes normal
- 13:11you know way
- 13:12way back in the day sunscreen wasn't normal either
- 13:15and we all had glowing tans
- 13:16and we thought we were so healthy
- 13:18and we didn't realize what we were doing then
- 13:20but we have awareness now
- 13:22so now
- 13:22we know that
- 13:23you need to protect your eyes from the sun
- 13:26that's true and just to add real quick
- 13:28you can also get the UV tint in contacts
- 13:32good I did not know that
- 13:34that's great yes yeah
- 13:36you gotta gotta protect them
- 13:39mm hmm absolutely
- 13:40and I do try to stay in the shade
- 13:42and wear hats when I'm not wearing sunglasses
- 13:44so there's also the other layers that we can do
- 13:47in addition to our sunglasses
- 13:48um you know
- 13:49hats and sunglasses and shade
- 13:51obviously would be the best scenario
- 13:54that's not always possible
- 13:56yeah not always
- 13:57but um yeah
- 14:01staying out of the sun as much as possible
- 14:02is the best thing to do
- 14:04but it's just not practical for a lot of people
- 14:06and there's a lot of people that are very sports minded
- 14:08outdoor activities are a big thing
- 14:11and sunglasses um
- 14:14it's kind of hard to play football in sunglasses
- 14:17you know but they're coming out with
- 14:18you know they're giving them goggles now
- 14:21and all kinds of things that are like wow
- 14:23this is crazy but I think more people are taking eye health
- 14:27and eye safety more seriously
- 14:31which is a really good thing
- 14:32and it's just another layer of sunglasses day
- 14:36adds to it is to remind people
- 14:38that sunglasses aren't just a fashion statement
- 14:41that sunglasses have a function
- 14:43but you have to make sure you have the proper
- 14:46polarized sunglasses
- 14:48and you have to have a sufficient UV rating on them
- 14:51a coating keep the sun out
- 14:53wearing the you know
- 14:54three dollar glasses that you get from um
- 14:57the grocery store
- 14:58probably aren't gonna give you the best Protection
- 15:01yes you want UVA and UVB
- 15:04and I know that because
- 15:06I just recorded a podcast with Doctor Kristie Nguyen
- 15:09that'll be out the first week of June
- 15:11where we talk all about sun safety for eyes
- 15:14and that was one of the things she said
- 15:16spoiler you want UVA and UVB on your sunglasses
- 15:20and polarized if you can have all three of those
- 15:22that's your perfect combination
- 15:25which I didn't know I thought
- 15:26I thought that polarized just made it like look better
- 15:31but it doesn't well
- 15:32it does do that but it does other things too right
- 15:35it's strange it keeps eye strain too
- 15:37because things are crisper
- 15:39you don't strain your eyes
- 15:41yeah and she was talking about how it reduces glare
- 15:44which is helpful too
- 15:45so it there
- 15:45it actually is a healthy thing to have it polarized
- 15:49where I just thought it was like oh it looks prettier
- 15:53so you learn something new every day
- 15:55yeah no
- 15:57that's why we do a Sunglasses Day campaign
- 15:59to tell people this stuff
- 16:01because you just don't know
- 16:02you say oh
- 16:03these are cool they're $5
- 16:04and they go buy them I mean yeah
- 16:06that was my that was me
- 16:08that's what I did oh
- 16:09I'm gonna lose them anyway
- 16:10so I'm just gonna pay $5 yeah
- 16:12so that's me yeah
- 16:15I buy the cheap ones
- 16:16because I'm gonna scratch them or lose them
- 16:18or as girls I don't know if guys do this
- 16:21but girls we like to match our clothes
- 16:22so we need like
- 16:2310 pairs in all the colors
- 16:25so you know
- 16:26maybe we just splurge on some nice black ones
- 16:28and we get a nice case
- 16:29and we just be a little more careful
- 16:32yeah well
- 16:33and for people who wear glasses
- 16:34and don't wanna constantly change them
- 16:36there are transitions that
- 16:38the way the lens darken and lighten
- 16:40that some people do like that
- 16:42but they're not usually effective in driving
- 16:45because
- 16:45the windshield of your car has a UV protector on it so
- 16:50your sunglasses your transistion or whatever brand name those would be
- 16:56don't change
- 16:58yeah in the car
- 17:01which I didn't know that until I was with somebody
- 17:04that was complaining
- 17:05that their glasses wouldn't change in the car and
- 17:10yeah I wouldn't have known that either
- 17:13that's interesting okay
- 17:14so we got a lot of new options in eye patches
- 17:17we got a lot of new options in sunglasses
- 17:19and sun Protection I also like
- 17:22speaking of sun Protection
- 17:24umbrellas are getting more popular for UV
- 17:27you know they have the specific UV umbrellas
- 17:29and they're smaller they're not the huge rain ones
- 17:32I got one of those
- 17:34when we went on a trip to Disney and universal
- 17:38with the kids and it was really nice
- 17:41when you're standing those long lines
- 17:42to just pop up an umbrella
- 17:44and we would all huddle under that thing
- 17:46and it was it was so nice
- 17:47so I like that
- 17:48that's not weird to have an umbrella in the sun
- 17:50like more people are doing it
- 17:52I think it's not just eye safety
- 17:54but skin safety you know
- 17:55there's a lot of research about
- 17:57about skin cancer that they're telling people
- 18:00stay out of the sun don't
- 18:02don't be a sun worshipper
- 18:04um I don't sit out in the sun like I used to
- 18:08um
- 18:09I do think that with the push for good sunscreen
- 18:14good moisturizers
- 18:15good practices of staying out of the sun
- 18:19is a good thing because it causes so much damage
- 18:25just with squamous cell basil cell
- 18:28I mean that's
- 18:28those are still tough skin cancers to mess with
- 18:31and then you add the melanoma layer on top of it
- 18:34and then the aging layer on top of that
- 18:36and it just the best thing to do
- 18:38is try to stay as protected from the sun as possible
- 18:42for all parts of your body
- 18:43they say that for men um
- 18:46melanoma on their scalp is the most um
- 18:48their scalp on their
- 18:48I think their back
- 18:49are the two places that they get it the most
- 18:51and people don't usually think about getting um
- 18:54skin cancer on your scalp
- 18:57yeah that makes a lot of sense
- 19:00alright so
- 19:01we've talked a lot about sun Protection and what to do
- 19:04but for those who are just diagnosed or just treated
- 19:08and summer's looking a little different
- 19:10what do you say to them
- 19:12Different is good it might be different
- 19:15but still go do it because you don't want to
- 19:18you don't want to let this disease
- 19:20take so much from you
- 19:22so I can't enjoy the beach like I used to
- 19:25but I still go and I still enjoy the beach in a new way
- 19:28and I still it's still my place
- 19:31it's still something I love to do
- 19:33um my eye is healed
- 19:35it doesn't matter but this
- 19:37the sun is hard and maneuvering when you have one eye
- 19:41walking in sand is a challenge for me
- 19:44so sometimes that is um
- 19:47I don't do the long walks on the beach like I used to
- 19:50uh
- 19:52but find something that is still a part of what it is
- 19:57you used to enjoy you know
- 19:58if maybe you can't run anymore
- 20:00well maybe you
- 20:01you walk but don't let it take precious things from you
- 20:07go out make memories
- 20:08they're just gonna be a little bit different
- 20:10you just alter it so that you're still
- 20:14you're still doing what you have always loved to do
- 20:17you're just finding a new way to maybe enjoy it
- 20:20in a way that might fit you your lifestyle right now
- 20:24that's so important I think
- 20:25in so many aspects of life
- 20:28even just aging we have to find new ways to do things
- 20:31and I think you're spot on
- 20:35it's important to remember to find the joy
- 20:37and find the things you love
- 20:38and if you have to tweak it
- 20:39you tweak it
- 20:39and if you have to do it a little differently
- 20:42it's better than to not do it at all
- 20:45yeah cause you
- 20:46I mean
- 20:48just the world in general anymore is hard
- 20:51um if you don't have your joy we
- 20:54we get depressed and it's sad
- 20:56and you sit in the house and that's no fun
- 20:58go out go do things
- 20:59even though you're outside
- 21:01you know if you
- 21:02if you don't want to be in the sun
- 21:03or the sun hurts your eyes
- 21:04walk in the morning walk in the evening
- 21:06you know if you
- 21:07if you love to swim you can swim at night
- 21:10you can swim indoors
- 21:11there's things you can still do to still enjoy that
- 21:14and still make memories with your family
- 21:16still go on vacation vacation's really good
- 21:19but you just might have to tweak what you do
- 21:21like you carry an umbrella
- 21:23wear a hat I've never been a hat person
- 21:25but now when I'm at the beach
- 21:26I wear a hat um
- 21:28a big old floppy hat the biggest hat I can find
- 21:30and I might look silly but I wear a big old hat
- 21:33because that's important to me now
- 21:36but I also it's not about what other people think of me
- 21:40it's about making sure that I'm comfortable
- 21:42and that I'm safe
- 21:43and I'm doing all the right things for me
- 21:45but
- 21:46I'm still enjoying the activity that I've always loved
- 21:50and you know what's funny
- 21:51we've talked about this before
- 21:52I'm sure um
- 21:54about how you know
- 21:55when you feel like people are judging you
- 21:56they're not they don't even care about you
- 21:58it's probably when you're wearing that giant floppy hat
- 22:01and you feel silly
- 22:02I bet you there's 10 women looking at you going
- 22:04god I wish I could pull that hat off like her
- 22:07and every single one of you could
- 22:08you just think you can't
- 22:09but then when you see someone else do it
- 22:11you think wow
- 22:12look at her in that big hat
- 22:13I wanna be like that but you know
- 22:16then we get self conscious and nervous and so yeah
- 22:19just do it wear the big hat
- 22:20wear the eye patch wear the crazy colors
- 22:23wear whatever you want and yeah
- 22:25live and don't worry about what people are thinking
- 22:27cause they they're either admiring you
- 22:29or they're worried about their own insecurities
- 22:33I find that is true
- 22:35yeah
- 22:37and if people are confident in what they're doing
- 22:40nobody pays any attention to them
- 22:42and even if you're not so confident
- 22:43you can fake it for a day
- 22:46I'm not a bathing suit person
- 22:48but I still
- 22:49if I'm at the beach and the waves aren't too big and
- 22:52you know I'm still comfortable
- 22:54I'll go in like
- 22:55you know up to my
- 22:57between my ankle and my knee
- 22:59um but I have since
- 23:01since my diagnosis
- 23:02I have gotten knocked down by a wave or two and
- 23:05and I think oh
- 23:06my god here this
- 23:07you know old fat lady is tumbling around in the surf
- 23:10and nobody is even paying a bit of attention to me
- 23:13and I'm like I could have drowned
- 23:14nobody would have known cause nobody's cared
- 23:16that I was tumbling in the surf
- 23:18you know they just thought
- 23:20you were living your best life over there
- 23:22right right
- 23:23it's like you know
- 23:23I could use some help
- 23:25but they don't they didn't care
- 23:28and that was fine and it worked out
- 23:30and it's fun
- 23:31and I don't care that I got knocked down in the surf
- 23:33it was great but um
- 23:35I try to avoid that as much as possible
- 23:38but sometimes sometimes stuff just happens
- 23:41so give yourself some Grace
- 23:43right
- 23:43and a tip for anyone who gets knocked down in the waves
- 23:46don't fight it just float on your back
- 23:48just starfish and go straight on your back
- 23:52it'll carry you up where you need to go
- 23:54but if you fight it
- 23:54you're gonna go down again and again and again
- 23:56and you're gonna look silly
- 23:57so float on your back
- 24:00sometimes
- 24:00you gotta roll a few minutes to get to the back
- 24:02but that's okay that's true
- 24:04that's true but when you try to stand up
- 24:06and it keeps knocking you down
- 24:07just go flat on your back
- 24:08it'll wash you right up to shore
- 24:11don't ask me how I know
- 24:16yeah
- 24:18well I have
- 24:18I have to say that those reels on social media
- 24:22where they show the people getting going
- 24:24falling back down getting up
- 24:25falling back down
- 24:26I do laugh at those because they are funny and
- 24:29and I know that if I fall down
- 24:31people are probably laughing at me
- 24:33and that's okay
- 24:34cause I don't care if people laugh at me anymore
- 24:36cause I'm laughing at myself
- 24:37so you know
- 24:38laugh along well
- 24:39you're just bringing someone some joy
- 24:41and there's nothing wrong with that
- 24:45yeah well
- 24:46you know I fall down a lot
- 24:47so it's kind of funny I don't get worried about it
- 24:49just like oh
- 24:50there's something there I go again
- 24:52you know yeah
- 24:54and keep going better to fall into the water
- 24:56at least it's a softer landing
- 24:58yeah for sure
- 25:00but I I just think that sometimes
- 25:02we take ourselves too seriously
- 25:04I know looking back over 15 years
- 25:07I took myself way too seriously for way too long
- 25:12I even took this eye cancer
- 25:14you know ocular melanoma
- 25:15so seriously it's a very serious disease
- 25:18I don't mean to make light of it
- 25:19but it no longer defines me and what I do
- 25:23and my day to day life it's a
- 25:27it's just a kind of a a
- 25:29something I live with a chronic thing that I have
- 25:32but
- 25:33I can't let it take any more from me than it's taken
- 25:38you know I had to I had to realize
- 25:42enough is enough and you have a life to live
- 25:45and nobody owes you anything
- 25:49don't you can't rely on your family and friends for
- 25:52for only so long because it's not fair to them
- 25:55they didn't ask for it and
- 25:57when you're not brave enough
- 25:58to do something for yourself
- 26:00or you're not able to do something for yourself
- 26:03when you constantly rely on somebody else that you're
- 26:07you're taking their joy away from them
- 26:08if you won't go on a vacation
- 26:10or go do something fun outside
- 26:12because you're afraid
- 26:14you're taking that away from your family
- 26:16and your friends that are around you
- 26:17that want to go do fun things with you
- 26:19so don't let it take more than it's already taken
- 26:23because
- 26:26it's just not it's not fair to you
- 26:28your friends and your family
- 26:32that's kind of my mantra lately is
- 26:34you know don't
- 26:35you know you're you're
- 26:36you can do it you can do anything
- 26:38absolutely I agree
- 26:40you can do anything
- 26:41and as long as you have that attitude
- 26:43you will find a way to do it
- 26:44so I think that's a great way to end this episode
- 26:48we've talked a lot about summer
- 26:50so we hope you guys have a wonderful summer
