- 0:14Welcome to Love Letters. Through Welcome to Love Letters
- 1:04from God today we're going to be reading some more about Solomon
- 1:12and what he did and then some of the conclusions that he had at
- 1:19the end of his life. We're going to start with the
- 1:23Second Chronicles chapter 6. Then Solomon spoke.
- 1:35The Lord said that he would dwell in the dark cloud.
- 1:40I have surely built you an excellent house and a nice place
- 1:47for you to dwell in forever. Then the king turned around and
- 1:54blessed the whole assembly of Israel, while all the assembly
- 1:58of Israel was standing. And he said, Blessed be the Lord
- 2:04God of Israel, who has fulfilled with his hands what he spoke
- 2:11with his mouth to my father David, saying, Since the day
- 2:16that I brought my people out of the land of Egypt, I have chosen
- 2:21no city from any tribe of Israel in which to build a house, that
- 2:29my name might be there. Nor did I choose any man to be a
- 2:36ruler over my people Israel. Yet I have chosen Jerusalem that
- 2:44my name may be there, and I have chosen David to be over my
- 2:50people Israel. Now it was in the heart from my
- 2:54father David to build a temple for the name of the Lord God of
- 3:04Israel. And the Lord said to my father
- 3:08David, whereas it was in your heart to build a temple for my
- 3:14name, you did well in that. It was in your heart.
- 3:22Nevertheless, you shall not build the temple, but your son,
- 3:28who will come from your body, He shall build the temple in my
- 3:34name. So the Lord has fulfilled His
- 3:38word in which He spoke, and I have filled the position of my
- 3:44father David, and I sit on the throne of Israel as the Lord
- 3:49promised, And I have built the temple for the name of the Lord
- 3:54God of Israel. And there I have put the ark, in
- 3:59which is the covenant of the Lord, which He made with the
- 4:04children of Israel. Then Solomon stood before the
- 4:09altar of the Lord in the presence of all the assembly of
- 4:16all the assembly of Israel, and he spread out his hands.
- 4:22For Solomon had made a bronze platform, 5 cubits long, 5
- 4:30cubits wide, and three cubits high, and it set it in the midst
- 4:36of the court, and he stood on it.
- 4:40He knelt down on his knees before all the assembly of
- 4:43Israel, and he spread out his hands toward heaven.
- 4:50And he said, Lord God of Israel, there is no God in heaven or on
- 4:57earth like you who keep your covenant and mercy with your
- 5:03servants, who walk before you with all their hearts.
- 5:09You have kept what you promised your servant David my Father.
- 5:15You have both spoken with your mouth and fulfilled it with your
- 5:20hand as it is this day. Therefore, Lord God of Israel,
- 5:26now keep what you promised your servant David, my father,
- 5:31saying, You shall not fail to have a man sit before me on the
- 5:38throne of Israel only if your sons take heed to their way,
- 5:45that they walk in My law as you have walked before me.
- 5:51And now, O Lord God of Israel, let your word come true, which
- 5:58you have spoken to your servant David.
- 6:02But will God indeed dwell with men on earth?
- 6:06Behold, heaven, and the heaven of heavens cannot contain you.
- 6:13How much less this temple which I have built.
- 6:18Yet regard the prayer of your servant and his supplication, Oh
- 6:23Lord my God, and listen to the cry and the prayer which your
- 6:29servant is praying before you, that your eyes may be open
- 6:35toward this temple day and night, toward the place where
- 6:40you said you would put your name, that you may hear the
- 6:44prayer which your servant makes toward this place.
- 6:49And may you hear the supplications of your, of your
- 6:54servant, and of your people Israel, when they pray toward
- 6:59this place. Hear from Heaven your dwelling
- 7:03place, and when you hear forgive.
- 7:07If anyone sins against his neighbor and is forced to take
- 7:13an oath and comes and takes an oath before your altar in this
- 7:19temple, then hear from heaven and act and judge your servants,
- 7:25bringing retribution on the wicked by bringing his way on
- 7:30his own head and justifying the righteous by giving him
- 7:36according to his righteousness. Or if your people Israel are
- 7:42defeated before an enemy because they have sinned against you,
- 7:49and return and confess your name and pray and make supplication
- 7:56before you in this temple. Then you hear from heaven and
- 8:00forgive the sin of your people Israel, and bring them back to
- 8:05the land which you gave to them and their fathers.
- 8:10When the heavens are shut up and there's no rain, because they
- 8:15have sinned against you, When they pray toward this place and
- 8:20confess your name and turn from their sin because you afflict
- 8:25them. Then hear in heaven, and forgive
- 8:29the sin of your servants, your people Israel, that you may
- 8:33teach them the good way in which they should walk, and send rain
- 8:39on your land, which you have given to your people as an
- 8:43inheritance. When there is famine in the
- 8:47land, pestilence or blight or mildew, locusts or grasshoppers,
- 8:56when their enemies besiege them in the land of their cities,
- 9:01whatever plague or whatever sickness there is, whatever
- 9:06prayer, whatever supplication is made by anyone or by all your
- 9:12people Israel, when each one knows his own burden and his own
- 9:18grief, and spreads out his hands to the temple, then hear from
- 9:25heaven your dwelling place, and forgive and give to everyone
- 9:30according to all his ways, whose heart you know.
- 9:36For you alone know the hearts of the sons of men, that they may
- 9:40fear you to walk in your ways, as long as they live in the land
- 9:46which you gave to your father's. Moreover, concerning a foreigner
- 9:52who is not of your people Israel, but has come from a far
- 9:56country, for the sake of your great name and your mighty hand
- 10:02and your outstretched arm, when they come and pray in this
- 10:07temple, then hear from heaven your dwelling place, and do
- 10:12according to all for which the foreigner calls to you, that all
- 10:19peoples of the earth may know your name and fear you as your
- 10:25own people, Israel, and that they may know that this temple
- 10:30which I have built is called by your name.
- 10:35When your people go out to battle against their enemies
- 10:39wherever you send them, and when they pray to you toward that
- 10:43city which you have chosen and the temple which I have built
- 10:47for your name, then hear from heaven their prayer and their
- 10:53supplication, and maintain their 'cause when they sin against
- 10:58you, for there's no one who does not sin.
- 11:03And you become angry with them and deliver them to the enemy,
- 11:07and they take them captive to a land far or near.
- 11:12Yet when they come to themselves in the land where they were
- 11:16carried captive, and repent and make supplication to you in the
- 11:22land of their captivity, saying, We have sinned, we have done
- 11:27wrong, and have committed wickedness.
- 11:30And when they return to you with all their heart and with all
- 11:35their soul, in the land of their captivity, where they have been
- 11:40carried captive in prey, toward their land which He gave to
- 11:44their fathers the city which you have chosen, and toward the
- 11:49temple which I have built for your name, then hear from heaven
- 11:54with your dwelling, place their prayer and their supplications,
- 12:01and maintain their cause, and forgive your people who have
- 12:06sinned against you. Now, my God, I pray, let your
- 12:11eyes be open, let your ears be attentive to the prayer made in
- 12:17this place. Know therefore and arise, O Lord
- 12:23God, to your resting place, you and the ark of your strength.
- 12:29Let your priests, O Lord God, be clothed with salvation, and your
- 12:35Saints rejoice in goodness. Lord God, do not turn away from
- 12:41the face of your anointed. Remember the mercies of your
- 12:46servant David. Such is the reading of Second
- 12:50Chronicles chapter 6. As he is dedicating that temple
- 12:57that he is made to the Lord. Let's continue in Chapter 7.
- 13:03When Solomon had finished praying, fire came down from
- 13:08heaven and consumed the burnt offerings and the sacrifices,
- 13:15and the glory of the Lord filled the temple, and the priest could
- 13:19not enter the House of the Lord, because the glory of the Lord
- 13:25had filled the Lord's house. When all the children of Israel
- 13:29saw how the fire came down and the glory of Lord on the temple,
- 13:35they bowed before their faces to the ground on the pavement, and
- 13:41they worshipped and they praised the Lord, saying, For He is
- 13:46good, for His mercy endures forever.
- 13:51Then the king and all the people offered sacrifices before the
- 13:58Lord. King Solomon offered a sacrifice
- 14:03of 22,000 bulls and 120,000 sheep.
- 14:12So the king of all the people dedicated the House of God, and
- 14:18the priest attended to their services.
- 14:21The Levites also with instruments of the music of the
- 14:25Lord, which King David had made to praise the Lord, saying for
- 14:30his mercy endures forever. Whenever David offered praise by
- 14:36their ministry, the priest sounded trumpets opposite them,
- 14:42while all Israel stood. Furthermore, Solomon consecrated
- 14:49the temple of the court that was in front of the House of the
- 14:53Lord, for there he offered burnt offerings and the fat of the
- 14:58peace offering me caused. The bronze altar which Solomon
- 15:02had made was not able to receive the burnt offerings, the grain
- 15:07offerings and the fat. At that time.
- 15:11Solomon kept the feast for seven days, and all Israel with him a
- 15:17very great assembly from the entrance of Hemeth to the brook
- 15:23of Egypt. And on the 8th day they held a
- 15:27sacred assembly, for they observed the dedication of the
- 15:31altar 7 days and the feast 7 days.
- 15:37On the 23rd day of the 7th month, he sent the people away
- 15:43to their tents, joyful and glad in their hearts for the good
- 15:53that the Lord had done for David, for Solomon, and for his
- 15:58people. Israel.
- 16:03I gotta turn the page here. It doesn't always like to.
- 16:15Right to turn, but here we will get it.
- 16:28Thus Solomon finished the House of the Lord, and the King's
- 16:33house, and Solomon successfully accomplished all that came into
- 16:39his heart to make in the House of the Lord, and in his own
- 16:44house. Then the Lord appeared to
- 16:48Solomon by night, and he said to him, I have heard your prayer,
- 16:54and I have chosen this place for myself as a House of sacrifice.
- 17:01When I shut up heaven, and there is no rain, or command the
- 17:05locusts to devour the land, or send pestilence among my people,
- 17:12my people who are called by My name will humble themselves and
- 17:17pray and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways.
- 17:23Then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and
- 17:29heal their land. Now my eyes will be open and my
- 17:34ears attentive to the prayer made in this place.
- 17:39For now I have chosen and sanctified this house, that my
- 17:44name may be there forever, and my eyes and my heart will be
- 17:50there perpetually. As for you, if you walk before
- 17:55me as your father David walked and do according to all that I
- 18:00have commanded you, and if you keep my statutes and my
- 18:04judgments, then I will establish the throne of your Kingdom as I
- 18:10covenanted with David. Your father saying you shall not
- 18:15fail to have a man as Ruthier in Israel.
- 18:20But if you turn away from my centuries and my commandments
- 18:25which I have set before you, and you go and serve other gods and
- 18:30worship them, then I will uproot them from my land which I've
- 18:34given them. And this house which I have
- 18:38sacrificed for my name, I will cast out of my sight, and I will
- 18:43make it a proverb and a byword among all peoples.
- 18:50As for this house which is exalted, everyone who passes by
- 18:56it will be astonished and say, Why has the Lord done thus to
- 19:01this land and this house? They then will answer, because
- 19:07they forsook the Lord God and their fathers, who brought them
- 19:12out of the land of Egypt, and embraced other gods, and
- 19:16worshipped them, and served them, before He has brought all
- 19:20this calamity upon them. And such is the reading for
- 19:28Chapter 7 of the book of the Second Chronicles.
- 19:33I want you to note something in verse 39 there.
- 19:39If you have peace, you can't get it back.
- 19:45Solomon's prayer and Israel's actual experience in any history
- 19:56show that regaining your right standing with God and recovering
- 20:03His people. Are possible.
- 20:07We must never despair. There is a God in heaven, as
- 20:14Solomon is saying right here, who hears prayer and he answers
- 20:21it, and our peace rests upon that wonderful truth.
- 20:28So if you goof up, that's the point.
- 20:32If you goof up and you make mistakes, well, change them, do
- 20:39something about it, repent, and come back to the Lord.
- 20:44I want to read one other chapter here in the book of Ecclesiastes
- 20:50that Solomon wrote toward the end of his life.
- 20:53To everything there is a season. A time for every purpose under
- 20:59heaven. A time to be born and a time to
- 21:03die. A time to plant and a time to
- 21:06pluck what is planted. A time to kill and a time to
- 21:11heal. A time to breakdown and a time
- 21:15to build up. A time to weep and a time to
- 21:19laugh. A time to mourn and a time to
- 21:24dance. A time to castaway stones and a
- 21:28time to gather stones. A time to embrace and a time to
- 21:33refrain from embracing. A time to gain and a time to
- 21:38lose. A time to keep and a time to
- 21:41throw it away. A time to tear and a time to
- 21:45sew. A time to keep silence and a
- 21:50time to speak. A time to love and a time to
- 21:54hate. A time of war and a time of
- 21:59peace. What profit has the worker from
- 22:02that in which he laborers? I have seen the God-given task
- 22:09with which the sons of men are to be occupied.
- 22:13He's made everything beautiful in its time.
- 22:17Also He has put eternity in their hearts.
- 22:21Except that no one can find out the work that God does from
- 22:26beginning to end. I know that nothing is better
- 22:30for them than to rejoice and to do good in their lives, and also
- 22:36that every man should eat and drink and enjoy the good of all
- 22:41his labor. It is the gift of God.
- 22:45I know that whatever God does, it should be forever.
- 22:50Nothing can be added to it, nothing can be taken from it.
- 22:55God does it that men should fear before Him that which He has
- 23:01already been, and what is to be has already been, and God
- 23:08requires an account of what is past.
- 23:11Moreover, I saw under the sun, in the place of judgment,
- 23:16wickedness was there, and in the place of righteousness iniquity
- 23:22was there. And I said in my heart, God will
- 23:27judge the righteous and the wicked, for is a time.
- 23:31There is a time for every purpose and every good work.
- 23:37I said in my heart concerning the condition of the sons of men
- 23:43contests them, that they may see that they themselves are like
- 23:48animals. For what happens to the sons of
- 23:51men also happens to animals. One thing befalls them.
- 23:57As one dies, so dies the other. Surely they all have one breath.
- 24:04Man has no advantage over animals, for all his vanity all
- 24:09go to one place. All are from the dust, and all
- 24:14return to dust. Who knows the spirits of the
- 24:17sons of men, which goes upward in the spirits of the animal,
- 24:24which goes down to the earth? So I perceive that nothing is
- 24:30better than that a man should rejoice in his own works, for
- 24:44that is his heritage. For who can bring him to sea?
- 24:50What will happen after him? Shall we pray?
- 24:57Our Father in heaven, You give us time here on this earth.
- 25:03You rejoice when we obey. You are sad when we don't.
- 25:11Help us to do what you want. Recognized how wonderful and
- 25:17valuable you are and discourage us from doing things that you
- 25:25don't want. We're thankful for your Son
- 25:28Jesus, and we pray this in his name.
- 25:32Amen. And that's it for today.
