- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Is artificial intelligence replacing God as, well, the the architect and controller of the universe?
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: I don't know, maybe so.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: There's a sentence right now being sold as a survival guide for the future.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: We're not as gods.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: Not someday, not in a science fiction movie, but right now.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: Peter Diamandis and Stephen Coulter released We Are As Gods, a survival guide for the age of abundance.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: It presents emerging technologies as divine power.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: They ask whether we can use those powers wisely.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: That's a serious question.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: It deserves a serious answer.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: Not fear, not mockery.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: Truth does not need us to be afraid of a microscope, a computer, or a rocket.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: But I want to challenge that sentence underneath the whole thing.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: We are not as gods.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: We are human beings holding tools of staggering power.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: And there's a difference between big enough to determine whether those tools heal people or rule them.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: Good morning.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: Good afternoon, good evening, whenever you happen to be tuning in.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: This is the first episode of God is not the machine.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: I've done other posts, but this one's going to be more in alignment with how I want the show to be conveyed and spoken into being.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: I'm not a pastor.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: I'm not claiming a private word from God or hearing voices.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: I'm waiting, but yeah, nothing there.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: But I am a man opening the Bible, checking the claims and refusing to kneel to something built by human hands.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: I'm using the English Standard Version today, checked against the New American Standard Bible 2020.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: I will not build doctrine from a loose paraphrase or hide Christian failures.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: Now, first, let us be exact.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: The phrase comes from the Stuart brand and the whole Earth catalog.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: The original 1968 wording appears to have been we are as gods and might as well get used to it.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: The newer book uses the later version, get good at it.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: If I name a man, I owe him accuracy.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Diamantis and Cutler are not simply cheering for reckless power, their publisher says the book warns that abundance needs meaning and intelligence needs wisdom.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: They call for humility, cures for disease, healthier lives, creativity, and tools that solve problems at a new scale.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: I want much of that too.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: If a machine helps a doctor find cancer earlier, use it.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: If technology gives a paralyzed man movement, build it.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: If a treatment saves a child, thank God for the minds and hands behind it.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: Exodus chapter 35 praises skill, intelligence, knowledge, and craftsmanship.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: The Bible is not at war with making things.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: Now here's where the line gets crossed.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: Capability is not divinity.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: Access to information is not omniscience.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: A camera in every country is not omnipresence.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: Extending a heartbeat is not resurrection.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: A digital copy of somebody's voice is not a soul returned from the dead.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: Those words are not harmless decorations.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: Words train desire.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: If we repeatedly call human power godlike, well, eventually somebody who decides human power deserves the authority of God.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: And when that person who owns the machine, controls the model, edits the gene, holds the data, or writes the rule quietly, moves into the throne.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: Genesis chapter 1, verse 27 says human beings are made in the image of God that gives every human life enormous dignity, rich or poor, powerful or unknown, born or unborn, brilliant or disabled, believer or skeptic, image does not mean identity.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: A portrait of a king is not the king.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: We reflect something of God, but we are not God.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: The very next verse gives humanity real work.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: Be fruitful, fill the earth, subdue it, exercise dominion, build, cultivate, name, discover, create.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: Biblical faith does not command us to sit in the dark and refuse invention.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: It gives us delegated authority.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: Delegated authority means power under the one who gave it.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: Then Genesis chapter 3, verse 5 records the serpent's promise: Eat and you will be like God.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: Knowing good and evil, the temptation was to seize the right to define good and evil apart from God.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: It can wear a lab coat, a business suit, a clerical collar, or a police badge.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: The costume changes, the offer stays the same.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: You answer to nobody above you.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: Then we reach Genesis chapter 11, the Tower of Babel.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: Read what's in there.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: Not the children's Burke version, but the text does not say bricks were sinful, that God feared a physical climb into heaven or even use the word pride in those nine verses.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: What does it state?
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: Well, humanity shared one language.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: They developed a better building method.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: They gathered their power into one place.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: Then Genesis chapter 11, verse 4 gives their motive.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: Build a city and a tower, make a name for ourselves, and keep from being dispersed across the earth.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: The last piece matters because God had told humanity to fill the earth in Genesis chapter 1, verse 28.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: And it repeated after the flood in Genesis chapter 9, verse 1.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: Babel is not a warning against tools, it's a warning about unified human power, turned towards self-made glory and resistance to God's order.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: Now notice what comes next.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: At Babel, people make their own name.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: In Genesis chapter 12, verse 2, God tells Abram, I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: One group grasps for a name, one man receives a name and becomes a blessing.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: Well, that's the fault line.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: Power for our name, our power under God's name for our neighbor.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: Now I'm not telling you that artificial intelligence is a literal tower of Babel or that Genesis secretly predicted a data center.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: That would be me forcing today's headline onto an ancient text.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: But I am saying Babel gives us a pattern worth testing, common language, concentrated capability, confidence that nothing will be impossible, and leaders making a name while ordinary people live under the consequences.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: Now, today a small number of institutions can shape what billions see, believe, buy, fear, and repeat.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: A machine can sound calm and neutral while carrying its builders' blind spots and its data's errors.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: The National Institute of Standards and Technology calls one danger automation bias, excessive difference to automated systems.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: Technical safety experts warn us not to treat a machine as an authority because it sounds intelligent.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: Artificial intelligence can help us examine evidence.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: It can also invent a citation.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: It can help a doctor see a pattern.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: It can also reproduce a bias at enormous speed.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: It can write words without about love without proving it has ever loved anyone.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: It can calculate the statistical value of a life without processing the moral authority to tell us what a life is worth.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: Intelligence is not wisdom.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: On that sentence, Demandus, Diamandus, Color, Proverbs, and I can stand in the same room.
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: But when we have to ask where does wisdom come from and who judges whether power has been used wisely?
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: Well, if the answer is only us, we haven't solved the problem.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: We've handed the defendant the gavel.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: Proverbs chapter 16, verse 18, does not say pride is largest before the fall.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: It says pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: Chapter and verse, no slogan, inflation needed.
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: Daniel chapter 4 tells of King Nebuchadnezzar looking over Babylon and crediting his own power and glory.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: His humiliation follows.
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: Acts chapter 12 tells of Herod accepting the crowd's praise, and his was the voice of a God and not a man.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: Judgment follows.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: Romans chapter 1, verse 25 describes the human exchange that sits beneath idolatry, worshiping and serving the creature rather than the creator.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: The machine is part of creation because human beings themselves created, assembled it, and created matter and human knowledge.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: A created mind can make a remarkable artifact.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: It cannot promote the artifact into the creator.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: Now the confession.
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: Before Christians don't get to point across the street while hiding what happened in our own house, religion has been used to control, enslave, and brutalize people.
- 8:32SPEAKER_00: Men carrying crosses committed crusade violence.
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: Churches forced conversions and practiced persecution and anti-Semitism.
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: Men quoted scripture to defend slavery in 1995.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: The Southern Baptist Convention acknowledged slavery's role in its formula formation and later civil rights failures.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: Church leaders have hidden abuse, protected repertations, worship political access, and turned Jesus' name into a fundraising machine.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: Well, that's the old self-at-work, naming it as not surrendering the faith.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: It's well, it's obeying it.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: Jesus gave some of his hardest, harshest words to religious leaders who preached but did not practice and loved public honor.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: The Bible also contains hard texts about slavery, war, and judgment.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: This show will face them in context, not wave them away.
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: When the church builds its own tower, protects its own name, and treats people as material for institutional power, it repeats the rebellion it claims to oppose.
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: A cross on the building does not make the denomination holy.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: I need to say where I stand.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: Romans chapter 1, verse 16 says, I'm not ashamed of the gospel.
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: Neither am I.
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: Jesus Christ is my savior.
- 9:47SPEAKER_00: That is my confession and my personal journey, but I'm not going to force it on anyone.
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: And I will not hide it to make this conversation more comfortable.
- 9:56SPEAKER_00: This show will not argue that every believer is safer or safer or kinder than every unbeliever.
- 10:02SPEAKER_00: Research and history reject that cartoon.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: Some cross-cultural experiments find that belief in morally concerned gods can increase cooperation with strangers.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: Other large studies find no general prosocial advantage and weak links between religiosity, mistrust, or moral policing.
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: Religion can expand compassion.
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: It can also harden the line between our people and theirs.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: We're not going to prove God by claiming belief makes every society nicer.
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: God is not true because faith might be socially unuseful or useful.
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: God is real.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: He is real when believers embarrass his name, when skeptics behave nobly, and when the data refuse to become a church advertisement.
- 10:47SPEAKER_00: We also will not say education killed God.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: A 2024 study across about 100 countries found that rising education, urban life, and material security did not generally predict religious decline in the short or medium term.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: A newer 81-country study linked internet spread with declining religious affiliation.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: But causation is not simple.
- 11:10SPEAKER_00: Technology changes where belief is questioned and shared.
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: It doesn't settle whether God exists.
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: Science is a disciplined study of the natural world.
- 11:19SPEAKER_00: Faith does not permit fake evidence, ignored trials or calling every unknown a miracle.
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: The National Academies describe science as explanations grounded in observations and experiments others can check.
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: That method is powerful and bounded.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: It's a method restricted to testable natural explanations cannot announce that nothing beyond nature exists.
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: That's a philosophy, not a laboratory result.
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: Wealth does not settle it.
- 11:49SPEAKER_00: Peter Diamandis is accomplished, and that deserves acknowledgement.
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: It doesn't make him more valuable than my smaller bank account does not make me more right.
- 12:00SPEAKER_00: James chapter 2 condemns treating the rich as more worthy.
- 12:03SPEAKER_00: We do not reverse that sin by despising them.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: We check specific acts and evidence.
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: Guilt by association is not truth.
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: Psalm 82, verse 6, you are gods.
- 12:13SPEAKER_00: And Jesus cited in it, John chapter 10.
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: Read the whole Psalm.
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: Those addressed or judged for injustice, warned they will die like men and called to account under the Most High.
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: It does not grant autonomous divinity.
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: It strips rulers of the fantasy that their authority is absolute.
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: 2 Peter 1, verse 4 says believers become partakers of the divine nature and connects it to the escaping corruption.
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: Historic Christianity understands participation in God's life by grace, not becoming rival God's through technology.
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: The path is dependence and transformation, not a hardware upgrade into a deity.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: Now here's the center of the Christian answer at Babel.
- 12:55SPEAKER_00: Humanity reaches upward to make a name.
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: In Philippians chapter 2, Jesus Christ, who truly is in the form of God, does not use a quality with God for selfish advantage.
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: He takes the form of a servant.
- 13:07SPEAKER_00: He humbles himself to death on a cross.
- 13:09SPEAKER_00: Then God gives him the name above every other name.
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: The human fantasy of Godhood climbs, gasps, centralizes, and demands.
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: Christ descends, serves, sacrifices, and saves.
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: That's not a small difference in branding.
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: That's the opposite kingdom.
- 13:27SPEAKER_00: The new book speaks of resurrection becoming ordinary through technology.
- 13:32SPEAKER_00: We need to protect that word.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: Restoring a heartbeat is resuscitation.
- 13:36SPEAKER_00: Extending life is medicine.
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: Reconstructing a voice is simulation.
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: Biblical resurrection in 1 Corinthians chapter 15 is God raising the perishable as imperishable.
- 13:48SPEAKER_00: No server farm has conquered death.
- 13:51SPEAKER_00: No digital twin has walked out of a grave.
- 13:53SPEAKER_00: Build the treatment anyway.
- 13:55SPEAKER_00: Save the life in front of you.
- 13:57SPEAKER_00: Revive suffering, but do not rename the achievement so the tool can inherit the throne.
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: So is the world safer when people believe in an all-knowing, all-powerful God, or when people believe we are our own gods?
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: My answer needs one guardrail.
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: Forced belief is not faith.
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: A government cannot coerce love of God into a human heart.
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: History shows what happens when religious institutions fuse certainty with unchecked force.
- 14:27SPEAKER_00: Without absolute truth, law does not disappear.
- 14:30SPEAKER_00: Somebody still decides a vote, a court, king, a cleric, or wealthy platform becomes the authority.
- 14:36SPEAKER_00: Sharia is not one code.
- 14:39SPEAKER_00: Jewish law is not one code, and Western law is not morally neutral.
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: We must compare actual laws and outcomes, not trade labels.
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: What makes a law just?
- 14:50SPEAKER_00: Who predicts the dissenter and the powerless?
- 14:54SPEAKER_00: Well, Christianity begins with every person bearing God's image and Jesus commanding the love of God and neighbor.
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: The safer order is not a theocracy run by men who claim God agrees with them.
- 15:07SPEAKER_00: It's an order where human dignity is received, not assigned by wealth or utility, where every ruler is under judgment, where conscience is protected, where truth can challenge power, and where no person, church, state, corporation, or machine is treated as absolute.
- 15:23SPEAKER_00: God above man, no man above accountability, man above machine, law around power.
- 15:30SPEAKER_00: And men, this lands on us first.
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: We like power because power feels like safety.
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: More money, more muscle, more influence, more data, more control.
- 15:39SPEAKER_00: We can turn a career, a body, a political tribe, a church platform, or an AI system into an idol without ever bowing our knees.
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: We worship whatever we trust to save us and whatever we refuse to question.
- 15:53SPEAKER_00: Use the machine, learn the machine, build the machine if that is your work, but do not ask it to tell you who you are.
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: Do not hand it your conscience.
- 16:02SPEAKER_00: Do not let efficiency decide which human life deserves patience.
- 16:07SPEAKER_00: And do not confuse a prediction with a command or a confident answer with truth.
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: And do not preach against the pride of wealthy futurists while secretly wishing we had enough money to receive the same applause.
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: The warning begins in this chair.
- 16:21SPEAKER_00: It begins in my heart.
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: And if I use God's name to make my name, I'm building the same tower with religious bricks.
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: Now here's the practice for this week.
- 16:31SPEAKER_00: Before we adopt any tool, repeat any grand claim, or obey any automated answer, ask four questions.
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: Is it true?
- 16:41SPEAKER_00: Who has power?
- 16:42SPEAKER_00: Who bears the cost of if it's wrong?
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: And what would faithfulness require, even if the tool recommends something easier?
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: Then open Genesis chapters 1, 3, and 11 for yourself.
- 16:55SPEAKER_00: Read Proverbs chapter 16.
- 16:57SPEAKER_00: Read Philippians chapter 2.
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: Do not take my word for it.
- 17:00SPEAKER_00: Test what I said.
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: A faith afraid of examination is already in trouble.
- 17:04SPEAKER_00: We are not as gods, we are image bearers, builders, stewards, sinners offered grace.
- 17:11SPEAKER_00: People capable of remarkable, good, and catastrophic self-deception.
- 17:16SPEAKER_00: We need wisdom that power cannot manufacture, and mercy that intelligence cannot earn.
- 17:21SPEAKER_00: We will use the machine.
- 17:23SPEAKER_00: We will learn the machine.
- 17:24SPEAKER_00: We may even build the machine, but we will not worship the machine and we will never confuse what human hands created with the God who created the human hands.
- 17:36SPEAKER_00: This is God, is not the machine.
- 17:38SPEAKER_00: I'm Connor with honor.
- 17:39SPEAKER_00: Be safe out there and we'll see you tomorrow.
