- 0:03Speaker 1: Hi, get everybody. I'm Dan Hord and thanks for downloading
- 0:06Speaker 1: the Bengals Booth Podcast The Guess Who's Back Good Again. Addition,
- 0:14Speaker 1: as Joe Burrow returns to practice twelve days before the
- 0:17Speaker 1: season opener in Cleveland. Coming up, we'll hear from several
- 0:21Speaker 1: teammates on the return of Joey franchise, and I'll talk
- 0:24Speaker 1: to the newest Bengals quarterback, Will Greer, who was added
- 0:28Speaker 1: to the practice squad after an outstanding preseason with the
- 0:32Speaker 1: Dallas Cowboys. Then I'll be joined by Charles Davis from
- 0:36Speaker 1: CBS Sports, who will be in the Booth next week
- 0:40Speaker 1: to call the Bengals Browns game. The Bengals Booth Podcast

- 1:09Speaker 1: from the Jungle. In case you haven't seen it yet,
- 1:12Speaker 1: The Bengals have a new all access TV show this
- 1:15Speaker 1: year called From the Jungle. You can watch the first
- 1:18Speaker 1: episode on Bengals dot com or YouTube. It's basically the
- 1:22Speaker 1: team's own version of Hard Knocks, going behind the scenes
- 1:26Speaker 1: with players and coaches in ways the Bengals have never
- 1:29Speaker 1: done before. It's a huge project, and Seth Tatner and
- 1:32Speaker 1: his team of videographers and editors do a phenomenal job.
- 1:37Speaker 1: If you love the Bengals, you'll love From the Jungle. Now,
- 1:42Speaker 1: let's get to the latest news, beginning with the return
- 1:45Speaker 1: of Joe Burrow. On Wednesday afternoon, as the Bengals walk
- 1:48Speaker 1: toward the practice field, a long line of cameras waited
- 1:52Speaker 1: to see if Joe Burrow would be in uniform. Here's
- 1:55Speaker 1: rookie receiver andre Yosi Vash.
- 1:57Speaker 2: I kind of was wondering what they're out there for
- 1:59Speaker 2: that I saw Joe out there, obviously, I was like, okay, yeah,
- 2:01Speaker 2: he's out there, no sleeve, no nothing, which is really
- 2:04Speaker 2: nice to see his will throwing like he like didn't
- 2:07Speaker 2: even miss a beat. So you know, they're obviously teaming
- 2:09Speaker 2: the slow with him still, but it's nice to see
- 2:11Speaker 2: him still slinging the ball. Like like how he used to.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Burrow's return was not necessarily anticipated by his teammates, including
- 2:18Speaker 1: Jamar Chase found out when.
- 2:20Speaker 3: I got on the field. Matter of fact, I found
- 2:21Speaker 3: out when I watched him put his gear on. I
- 2:23Speaker 3: was like, what's he doing?
- 2:25Speaker 1: Were you concerned that he would try to come back
- 2:27Speaker 1: too fast?
- 2:28Speaker 4: Tell?
- 2:28Speaker 3: Yeah, that's why I told him, don't come until we
- 2:30Speaker 3: fought him, Like, I don't want you back until you
- 2:33Speaker 3: know you're ready.
- 2:34Speaker 5: I mean, he looked good. You know, I didn't see
- 2:35Speaker 5: no hobble or nothing.
- 2:36Speaker 3: Only I didn't see really much. And then again I
- 2:39Speaker 3: did not paying attention to him as much. But for
- 2:42Speaker 3: what I see, you know, he looks good. He doesn't
- 2:44Speaker 3: look like he's having probaball here or nothing. So that's
- 2:45Speaker 3: a good sign.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Burrow's return brought a sigh of relief to Bengals fans
- 2:49Speaker 1: and changed the energy at practice. Here are Yo, Si
- 2:52Speaker 1: Batch and veterans safety Mike Thomas.
- 2:54Speaker 5: It was nice.
- 2:55Speaker 2: You can deminitely feel his vibe out there, and he's
- 2:57Speaker 2: already you know, not critiquing, but give you need tips.
- 3:00Speaker 2: You know, watching me, I took a go route, you know,
- 3:03Speaker 2: I thought I could win inside leverage I did, but
- 3:05Speaker 2: he's like, you know, if you go outside, there's more
- 3:07Speaker 2: places where I can.
- 3:07Speaker 5: Throw the ball. And so it's just even just little.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Things like that that you hear from the starting quarterback
- 3:11Speaker 2: make you no, I always want to play football.
- 3:14Speaker 5: He kind of gives you more energy.
- 3:15Speaker 6: You know what I mean.
- 3:16Speaker 5: It kind of brings more life to the team.
- 3:17Speaker 6: And I'm not gonna talk too much about it, but
- 3:19Speaker 6: I think it was a whole different vibe than all
- 3:21Speaker 6: the training camp. I don't think he threw an incomplete
- 3:24Speaker 6: fast today, so I mean it was fun.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Joe's return came one day shy of five weeks after
- 3:30Speaker 1: he suffered his calf strain, and while he was gone,
- 3:32Speaker 1: his teammates wanted to make sure they didn't miss a beat.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Here are Ted Karras and t Higgins.
- 3:38Speaker 7: He looks like Joe, and he's been doing a great
- 3:40Speaker 7: job in grinding camp. You know, my main goal was
- 3:44Speaker 7: just had the on line unit cleaned up and polished
- 3:47Speaker 7: and ready to go, so you can just plug himself
- 3:49Speaker 7: in and pick up right where he left off.
- 3:51Speaker 8: I definitely feel like a gay of guy some extra juice,
- 3:53Speaker 8: you know, just to go out there and just show
- 3:55Speaker 8: him that that We've been working hard, even though he's
- 3:57Speaker 8: been getting treated up. You know, he wanted to show
- 4:01Speaker 8: him that there's nothing we ain't leave off nothing. You know,
- 4:03Speaker 8: we still sat spy. We was when when he first
- 4:06Speaker 8: got hurt.
- 4:06Speaker 1: So the media was only allowed to watch the first
- 4:08Speaker 1: thirty minutes of practice, but according to Higgins and others,
- 4:12Speaker 1: Burrow's best pass was a perfectly thrown bomb to rookie
- 4:16Speaker 1: Charlie Jones.
- 4:17Speaker 9: Just a deep ball to left us, a go ball
- 4:19Speaker 9: right on the money.
- 4:20Speaker 10: Didn't even have to adjust to it.
- 4:22Speaker 8: So it was definitely good to see him out there
- 4:24Speaker 8: and definitely good to get a replica.
- 4:26Speaker 1: Burrow was not the only Bengal who returned from injury.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Running Back Trayvon Williams was also back on the field
- 4:32Speaker 1: after missing nearly a month with an ankle spraying.
- 4:35Speaker 9: It was amazing, you know, like I said, you know,
- 4:37Speaker 9: I've been in there for thirty days, but Joe's been.
- 4:39Speaker 5: In there alongside with me.
- 4:40Speaker 9: So just being able to be alongside him to see,
- 4:42Speaker 9: you know, the path that he's taking to get to
- 4:44Speaker 9: where he's at right now as well. You know, you know,
- 4:46Speaker 9: of course, you know I was came back, but I
- 4:48Speaker 9: was excited just as much for.
- 4:50Speaker 5: Him too, because you know, he's ahead of the spirit
- 4:51Speaker 5: for us.
- 4:52Speaker 9: You know, he's an amazing guy, and he's gonna help us,
- 4:55Speaker 9: you know, make the Super Bowl push. So I'm excited
- 4:56Speaker 9: to be be back out there with him.
- 4:58Speaker 1: The Bengals Booth Podcast is brought to you bos I
- 5:00Speaker 1: Bengals Picks and Ultimate Bengals the free to play with
- 5:03Speaker 1: tickets and signed merchandise up for grabs. Find both inside
- 5:07Speaker 1: the Bengals app. NFL teams had to cut down their
- 5:10Speaker 1: rosters this week, and I think the media should cover
- 5:13Speaker 1: the process a little bit differently and focus on the
- 5:16Speaker 1: roster after the practice squad is announced instead of after
- 5:20Speaker 1: the fifty three man roster is announced. Practice squad players
- 5:24Speaker 1: can be elevated to the roster up to three times
- 5:27Speaker 1: during the regular season, and last year Trenton Irwin, Caladamitas
- 5:32Speaker 1: and Drew Chrisman started the season on the practice squad
- 5:35Speaker 1: and wound up playing huge roles. The practice squad can
- 5:39Speaker 1: include up to six veteran players, and for the Bengals
- 5:41Speaker 1: this year, it includes the oldest player on the team,
- 5:45Speaker 1: thirty three year old safety and special teams ACE Mike Thomas.
- 5:49Speaker 6: I appreciate the Bengals, our coaching staff. I mean, he
- 5:51Speaker 6: was just transparent and honest about the whole situation and
- 5:54Speaker 6: now understood my robe. So great to be bet. Get
- 5:57Speaker 6: to help my young dudes out, you know, continue to
- 6:00Speaker 6: in this game, and then I gotta stay ready if
- 6:01Speaker 6: opportunity to us himself. But at this point, you know,
- 6:04Speaker 6: being on a team like this, being around this locker room,
- 6:06Speaker 6: these guys, I mean to still be around and to
- 6:09Speaker 6: still be able to help.
- 6:10Speaker 5: Them out and grow.
- 6:11Speaker 6: Like that's why I want to be in.
- 6:12Speaker 1: This point in my career with standard elevations from the
- 6:14Speaker 1: practice guad. You know, at some point you're gonna play.
- 6:17Speaker 6: This shit absolutely man and uh again standard That's been
- 6:20Speaker 6: my whole career. So mentally that's that Point's fine. But
- 6:23Speaker 6: at the same time, helping these young guys understand, looking,
- 6:28Speaker 6: don't look for three one to speak. You step up,
- 6:31Speaker 6: You be a leader, even somebody you your bets, you
- 6:34Speaker 6: step up you you need.
- 6:35Speaker 5: But for me, like you.
- 6:36Speaker 6: Said, the fact that we negotiated in our CBA for
- 6:39Speaker 6: standard elevations, actually so many bits you know, around and
- 6:43Speaker 6: extending their careers. So I'll be ready whenever that comes here.
- 6:46Speaker 5: With the business.
- 6:48Speaker 1: But at the end of the.
- 6:48Speaker 6: Day, the fact that they kept oh uncle Michael Brown
- 6:52Speaker 6: and I gotta roll with this to wan, I can
- 6:53Speaker 6: help these young guys, you know, like to start off
- 6:56Speaker 6: their career behind note, giving them all the game that
- 6:58Speaker 6: I can.
- 6:58Speaker 5: I mean, that's a blessing for me.
- 7:00Speaker 1: I know, the organization is really hopeful that you would
- 7:03Speaker 1: accept a spot on the practice squad. Was there any
- 7:05Speaker 1: hesitation in your life here?
- 7:07Speaker 2: No?
- 7:07Speaker 6: I mean I told you they were very transparent from
- 7:09Speaker 6: me for a long time about what was gonna captain right,
- 7:12Speaker 6: and I can only appreciate them for that because a
- 7:14Speaker 6: lot of times you don't get that information right. And
- 7:17Speaker 6: I told them honestly from my standfield, unless a team
- 7:20Speaker 6: came and signed into that fifty durn Ross, I'm not
- 7:23Speaker 6: doing a lateral move to go to somebody else practice squad.
- 7:26Speaker 6: And you'll hope we get brought up. They were interests, but.
- 7:29Speaker 5: I got told everyone I'm not going to nobody else
- 7:32Speaker 5: but say this is where I want to get.
- 7:33Speaker 1: Thomas Stanley Morgan and Sydney Jones are three veterans who
- 7:37Speaker 1: will almost certainly contribute on game day at some point
- 7:41Speaker 1: this season. The Bengals Booth podcast is brought to you
- 7:44Speaker 1: by Kettering Health, the official healthcare provider of the Bengals.

- 7:57Speaker 1: learn more. Most of the players on the roster and
- 8:00Speaker 1: the practice squad have been with a team since the
- 8:02Speaker 1: start of OTAs, but a notable exception is quarterback Will Greer.
- 8:07Speaker 1: The former West Virginia Mountaineer Star, was the Cowboys number
- 8:11Speaker 1: three quarterback behind Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush before Dallas
- 8:15Speaker 1: made that trade with San Francisco for former number one
- 8:19Speaker 1: draft pick Trey Lance. Greer was told before the Cowboys
- 8:23Speaker 1: final preseason game that he was going to be cut,
- 8:25Speaker 1: but he decided to play anyway, and he had a
- 8:28Speaker 1: great game, passing for three hundred and five yards and
- 8:31Speaker 1: two touchdowns and running for fifty three yards and two
- 8:34Speaker 1: more tds in the Cowboys thirty one to sixteen win.
- 8:39Speaker 10: At the end of the day, it was just it
- 8:41Speaker 10: came down to the one play football or not play football,
- 8:44Speaker 10: and I just said I'm gonna go play put a
- 8:48Speaker 10: lot into it, so I felt good about the offense
- 8:50Speaker 10: and knew that I could go put good tape out.
- 8:52Speaker 2: So.
- 8:55Speaker 10: At the end of the day, it just made it simple. So, yeah,
- 8:56Speaker 10: I'm gonna go play.
- 8:57Speaker 1: What appealed about this opportunity, I.
- 9:00Speaker 10: Think the just the amount of the coaches, the quarterback
- 9:03Speaker 10: experience in this building, being able to play with Joe Burrow,
- 9:08Speaker 10: some of these the weapons we have. A big part
- 9:10Speaker 10: for me was being on a team, but like a
- 9:12Speaker 10: creditive teams and somebody that you know, had talent and
- 9:16Speaker 10: was you know, a Super Bowl contender if you will,
- 9:20Speaker 10: which clearly this place is, and that's that was a
- 9:22Speaker 10: big part of the decision.
- 9:23Speaker 1: What were the last couple of days, Like, was it
- 9:25Speaker 1: a whirlwind fielding calls from a bunch of teams?
- 9:28Speaker 10: Yeah, it was.
- 9:29Speaker 2: It was.
- 9:30Speaker 10: It was weird you being in that position, definitely, you know,
- 9:35Speaker 10: fielding calls and just trying to find the right fit.
- 9:38Speaker 10: It was the first time I've gotten to like choose
- 9:40Speaker 10: rather than being chosen. So it's a weird process. But uh,
- 9:44Speaker 10: my agent did a great job. And at the end
- 9:46Speaker 10: of the day, like I said, I wanted to go
- 9:48Speaker 10: to a place that I had a chance to go
- 9:49Speaker 10: win it all. Coming from a place like Dallas that
- 9:51Speaker 10: we were, you know, building to go win it all,
- 9:53Speaker 10: I wanted to go somewhere else with that same vision
- 9:56Speaker 10: and same ability, and this place definitely has.
- 9:59Speaker 1: A So you had great stats passing and rushing this preseason.
- 10:04Speaker 1: Do you feel like you are playing the best ball
- 10:06Speaker 1: of your life?
- 10:08Speaker 5: I do.
- 10:08Speaker 10: I think I got a lot more to give. But
- 10:10Speaker 10: I think as you the longer you play in the NFL,
- 10:13Speaker 10: the better you get with everything. And I definitely feel
- 10:16Speaker 10: like I'm chrending upwards and continuing to get better. And
- 10:19Speaker 10: this place was a place I felt like I was
- 10:21Speaker 10: going to continue to get pushed and developed.
- 10:23Speaker 1: We're not far from where you start in college. Is
- 10:25Speaker 1: there kind of a nice feeling to be back in
- 10:27Speaker 1: the Midwest where things went so well?
- 10:28Speaker 10: Yeah, No, it's crazy. I didn't realize how close it
- 10:31Speaker 10: was to Morgantown. It's awesome and definitely just excited.
- 10:35Speaker 6: To be here.
- 10:36Speaker 1: I hope I'm not wrong here. You look a little sleepy.
- 10:39Speaker 1: Has it been like, you know, restless, last forty eight.
- 10:42Speaker 5: Hours or whatever?
- 10:42Speaker 10: No doubt it definitely has. It was up early this
- 10:45Speaker 10: morning to get here in time to get the physicals
- 10:47Speaker 10: and all that done to be able to practice. I'll
- 10:50Speaker 10: sleep good at night.
- 10:51Speaker 2: We'll catch up.
- 10:51Speaker 6: We'll be fine here.
- 10:52Speaker 1: Greer was originally a third round draft picked by the
- 10:54Speaker 1: Panthers in twenty nineteen and started two games as a rookie,
- 10:59Speaker 1: but he suffered a foot injury in the second quarter
- 11:02Speaker 1: of the second game. The Bengals Booth Podcast is brought

- 11:18Speaker 1: to check in with one of the best color analysts
- 11:21Speaker 1: on TV, the Great Charles Davis. Will be in the
- 11:24Speaker 1: booth with Iron Eagle in Week one at Cleveland and Charles,
- 11:28Speaker 1: let's start with the Bengals leader, Joe Burrow. He was
- 11:31Speaker 1: back at practice twelve days before the season opener. In
- 11:35Speaker 1: your opinion, is that enough time for Joe to be
- 11:38Speaker 1: fully ready for that game?
- 11:40Speaker 4: Dan, you remember last year we were going through something
- 11:43Speaker 4: similar with a different type of ailment, all right, and
- 11:47Speaker 4: that ailment I felt like, said it back a little
- 11:50Speaker 4: bit more.
- 11:52Speaker 5: Even though it's legs, it's feed, it's all this.
- 11:54Speaker 4: It doesn't feel the same because that torque of throwing
- 11:57Speaker 4: when you have the epidect me and everything else that
- 12:01Speaker 4: goes along with it, and then you can't.
- 12:02Speaker 5: Do anything at all.
- 12:05Speaker 4: See I think with the leg I didn't you know,
- 12:06Speaker 4: I'm not a doctor, won't play one on TV. But
- 12:09Speaker 4: I think that overall he was able to get a
- 12:11Speaker 4: lot of workouts in. I think he's been moving around
- 12:14Speaker 4: more than people think. Bottom line is I just think
- 12:17Speaker 4: that everything's gonna be okay.
- 12:19Speaker 5: He went through it last year.
- 12:20Speaker 4: Dan didn't feel quite himself, didn't play to his normal
- 12:24Speaker 4: level in the open against Pittsburgh. It's nothing like experience
- 12:28Speaker 4: is they're having gone through it before knowing what to expect.
- 12:32Speaker 4: I expect to see much more of the Joe Burrow
- 12:34Speaker 4: we're used to seeing come the opener at Cleveland.
- 12:37Speaker 1: What do you admire and respect about him going into
- 12:40Speaker 1: year four?
- 12:41Speaker 4: Dan, He's the same guy every time I meet him.
- 12:45Speaker 4: I'm not quite sure what your assessment would be because
- 12:47Speaker 4: you're around him even more than we are. But what
- 12:49Speaker 4: I like about him is he's very true to being
- 12:52Speaker 4: Joe Burrow. And when you meet people, sometimes there's one
- 12:56Speaker 4: persona versus another. After a win, after a long. Sometimes
- 13:01Speaker 4: it's depending on the time of year. Sometimes it's depending
- 13:04Speaker 4: on how they're playing. I could not tell you what
- 13:07Speaker 4: his stats were the previous week. I couldn't tell you
- 13:10Speaker 4: if they won or lost the previous week. I can't
- 13:13Speaker 4: tell you anything based on each meeting with Joe Burrow.
- 13:16Speaker 4: And I'm pretty sure Ian Eagle and Evan Washburn would
- 13:19Speaker 4: back me up on this. You walk into the room,
- 13:22Speaker 4: or he walks in, if you're already there for your meeting.
- 13:25Speaker 5: He says hello. He's very polite.
- 13:27Speaker 4: He greets everyone that is in the room, not just
- 13:30Speaker 4: you know, the announcers, if the producers in the room,
- 13:33Speaker 4: the directors in the room, if someone else happens to
- 13:36Speaker 4: be there, he greets them with a hello. He sits
- 13:39Speaker 4: down and tell me if this is your experience, Hello, Hello, Hello, Hello.
- 13:42Speaker 5: He sits down and that's it. That look is go yeah,
- 13:50Speaker 5: and you know, a lot of chitchat not his thing.
- 13:55Speaker 5: But he's not rude. But if you're gonna waste his
- 13:57Speaker 5: time with chitchat, he's not gonna be there that it's
- 14:01Speaker 5: going to be. Ask your questions, let's go, and again,
- 14:05Speaker 5: not rude, but very to the point. Here we go.
- 14:09Speaker 4: Off we go and then he's back to the business
- 14:11Speaker 4: to tront who win games for Cincinnati.
- 14:14Speaker 1: And that is my experience as well. You described it
- 14:16Speaker 1: very well. We're chatting with Charles Davis. The Bengals have
- 14:19Speaker 1: the big three back and wide receiver, Chase Higgins and Boyd.
- 14:23Speaker 1: They've got Joe Mixon back and running back. They do
- 14:25Speaker 1: have a newcomer in the mix though, and tight end,
- 14:27Speaker 1: Irv Smith Junior. What do you think of Irv and
- 14:30Speaker 1: how important is the tight end in the Bengals offense.
- 14:34Speaker 4: Well, they've worked around the tight end to an extent
- 14:37Speaker 4: for time. C j Uzama had a big year and
- 14:41Speaker 4: parlayed that into a free agent contract with the Jets.
- 14:44Speaker 4: My experience with the Bengals and what I think about
- 14:48Speaker 4: how they want to run offense. If the tight end
- 14:51Speaker 4: is there and available, they're going to utilize it.
- 14:54Speaker 5: I thought the second.
- 14:55Speaker 4: Half of last year hayden Hurst got utilized more as
- 14:59Speaker 4: he got more comfortable and became that guy. Remember that's
- 15:02Speaker 4: why hayten Hurst was drafted in the first round in the
- 15:04Speaker 4: first place by Baltimore to catch passes and be that guy.
- 15:08Speaker 4: If they can get the earth Smith Junior that came
- 15:10Speaker 4: out of Alabama, that explosive youngster that we saw make plays.
- 15:15Speaker 4: If they're getting him in Cincinnati, Oh, he has no
- 15:18Speaker 4: worry about being utilized. Joe Burrow knows how to spread
- 15:20Speaker 4: the ball around and you want to go cover the
- 15:22Speaker 4: other three. That's cool.
- 15:24Speaker 5: I got another guy I can move the ball to.
- 15:26Speaker 4: It's just a matter of if Erthsmith stays healthy and
- 15:29Speaker 4: if he's the guy that we saw coming out of college,
- 15:31Speaker 4: because he just didn't stay healthy in Minnesota.
- 15:34Speaker 1: Last year, the Bengals went into the season with four
- 15:36Speaker 1: new starting offensive linemen. This year, it's only one, and
- 15:40Speaker 1: he's a four time Pro Bowler. Orlando Brown Junior. Is
- 15:43Speaker 1: this the year that the Bengals offensive line becomes known
- 15:46Speaker 1: as his strength?
- 15:48Speaker 4: I think so, because I think that they've taken care
- 15:51Speaker 4: of all they needed to prior to this last move
- 15:54Speaker 4: you just described.
- 15:56Speaker 5: Now, the kicker to the move is Orlando Brown Junior.
- 15:59Speaker 4: Coming in at left tackle, and Jonah Williams said, hold
- 16:02Speaker 4: on a second, that's my spot. And of course there's
- 16:04Speaker 4: a little bit of a how do we say it,
- 16:06Speaker 4: kerf fluffel in the beginning, and you remember Jonah Williams
- 16:10Speaker 4: hurt feelings, wanted to stay at left tackle. There's a
- 16:13Speaker 4: pride factor in that. You know, that's where he's played
- 16:16Speaker 4: his entire career. Very few times I think Dan to
- 16:19Speaker 4: actually get one right. But when it first happened and
- 16:22Speaker 4: Jonah said, well I want to be traded, get me
- 16:24Speaker 4: out of here, I never bought into it.
- 16:28Speaker 5: I never once did. I just said, he's got hurt feelings.
- 16:30Speaker 4: I get it he wants to stay where he is,
- 16:32Speaker 4: but I think he's going to look around and realize
- 16:35Speaker 4: just moving to right tackle, even though it's tough playing
- 16:39Speaker 4: on this team, in this offense, with this group, with
- 16:41Speaker 4: a chance to go to the super Bowl, I think
- 16:43Speaker 4: over time it will it will dissipate, and it has
- 16:46Speaker 4: and that's been a good thing for them.
- 16:49Speaker 1: Let's turn the defense with Charles Davis. You played safety
- 16:52Speaker 1: in the SEC at Tennessee. How big of a deal
- 16:55Speaker 1: is the loss of Jesse Bates and Von Bell, particularly
- 16:59Speaker 1: early in this season.
- 17:01Speaker 5: It's a big loss.
- 17:02Speaker 4: I don't think we can downplay it, and you're right
- 17:04Speaker 4: about particularly early, because once it's for real and everything
- 17:08Speaker 4: starts to move really fast, that one adjustment that's not
- 17:12Speaker 4: made in the back end of the secondary that Jesse
- 17:14Speaker 4: Bates or von Bell would have made with the rest
- 17:16Speaker 4: of the secondary also turns into a big play because
- 17:19Speaker 4: someone runs free. That tackling that von Bell provided in
- 17:24Speaker 4: the middle of that defense, or coming up off the
- 17:26Speaker 4: edge when he dropped down the ball. Howking that Jesse
- 17:29Speaker 4: Bates provided as being a center field type of a
- 17:32Speaker 4: free safety back there in full experience, it's a.
- 17:34Speaker 5: Big deal early. Now do they have people.
- 17:37Speaker 4: Athletically that can replace them, certainly, but it's also the
- 17:42Speaker 4: leadership aspect, the tone von Bell set, the moment he
- 17:46Speaker 4: got to Cincinnati where everybody's ended up buying in pretty quickly.
- 17:50Speaker 4: All those things have to be replaced as well. And
- 17:53Speaker 4: lou Annarumo is the defensive mastermind. He needs these guys
- 17:57Speaker 4: on point. He may have to be a little more
- 18:00Speaker 4: vanilla early just to make sure they have their feet
- 18:02Speaker 4: under them.
- 18:04Speaker 1: The illusions, as we say, with lou Ana Roumo Charles,
- 18:08Speaker 1: a lot of us thought he'd be gone, thought he
- 18:10Speaker 1: would get a head coaching job this offseason. Did you
- 18:12Speaker 1: think that was going to happen? And what is it
- 18:15Speaker 1: about lou that makes him one of the best defensive
- 18:17Speaker 1: coordinators in the league.
- 18:19Speaker 4: One I thought it should have happened. Okay, and it
- 18:22Speaker 4: should have happened a couple of years ago. But every
- 18:25Speaker 4: time he doesn't get one of these jobs short of
- 18:29Speaker 4: him saying that's not the job for me, I'm wondering
- 18:33Speaker 4: what's going on with those organizations. And I know this
- 18:36Speaker 4: scene seems really strong to say, but I wonder about
- 18:40Speaker 4: hiring around the league, and I would sit with anyone
- 18:43Speaker 4: and happily have them educate me on what they're looking
- 18:46Speaker 4: for in a head coach.
- 18:48Speaker 5: Are you looking listen? We went the Oh Wow, he
- 18:50Speaker 5: calls really good ball.
- 18:51Speaker 4: Plays with Cliff Kingsbury and Arizona, and I like Cliff.
- 18:55Speaker 4: I covered him in college. I would hope that he
- 18:58Speaker 4: would consider me a friendly person with him, whether he
- 19:01Speaker 4: considered me a friend or not. But I questioned it
- 19:03Speaker 4: from day one, and I'd be happy to say it,
- 19:06Speaker 4: Are you kidding me?
- 19:07Speaker 5: This is why we're hiring him? That makes no sense
- 19:10Speaker 5: to me.
- 19:11Speaker 4: I want to know that you're hiring someone who can
- 19:13Speaker 4: command the room, command the respect of the ball club,
- 19:16Speaker 4: follow what you're trying to get done, and be there
- 19:19Speaker 4: to handle all the adult decisions that have to be made.
- 19:22Speaker 4: If that's not Louanna Room, I don't know who else
- 19:24Speaker 4: that is as soon as he walks in the room.
- 19:27Speaker 5: The respect is there. The guys want to play for him.
- 19:31Speaker 4: I've not met anyone that doesn't enjoy ultimately playing for Louanna.
- 19:35Speaker 5: Room. Are there some tough moments? Well?
- 19:37Speaker 4: When are there? Not the guy who has his name
- 19:40Speaker 4: on the trophy that they all play for, Lobardi Trophy.
- 19:44Speaker 4: He was not exactly a shrinking violet and what exactly? Hey,
- 19:47Speaker 4: come give me a hug every day. But guess what
- 19:50Speaker 4: those guys would have killed for him and those who
- 19:53Speaker 4: remain on this earth.
- 19:55Speaker 5: I met one of them. You know what he told me, Dan, I.
- 19:58Speaker 4: Don't think of my father every day, who's been on
- 20:00Speaker 4: twenty five years, but I think of Lombardi every single.
- 20:03Speaker 5: One in my life.
- 20:04Speaker 1: Wow, that's amazing. So the season begins in Cleveland against
- 20:09Speaker 1: the Browns, and Browns went seven and ten last year,
- 20:11Speaker 1: but they didn't have Deshaun Watson for the first eleven
- 20:13Speaker 1: games of the season. What are your expectations for the
- 20:17Speaker 1: Browns quarterback now that he's had a normal training camp
- 20:20Speaker 1: and gets to start from week one.
- 20:23Speaker 4: My expectations are exactly what the Browns are and what
- 20:25Speaker 4: the Browns actually expect. Twenty twenty Deshaun Watson. That's what
- 20:31Speaker 4: they have to have because that's who they signed. That's
- 20:33Speaker 4: who they they they brought in. That's who they said, Okay,
- 20:37Speaker 4: two hundred and thirty six million dollars guaranteed, that's the
- 20:39Speaker 4: guy we're getting.
- 20:40Speaker 5: Well, we all know what has happened since that time frame.
- 20:43Speaker 5: We've had the holdout, we've had the.
- 20:45Speaker 4: Off field issues, the legal issues, the suspension for eleven
- 20:49Speaker 4: games last year, which made their season a rap before
- 20:51Speaker 4: they ever kicked the football off, even though they played
- 20:53Speaker 4: hard and did the best they could for Jacoby Brissett,
- 20:56Speaker 4: it's not the three and three Deshaun Watson. And I
- 20:59Speaker 4: hate doing that by record. If like starting pitchers is
- 21:02Speaker 4: not the same for quarterbacks. But still they went three
- 21:05Speaker 4: and three with him down to stretch. But he wasn't
- 21:06Speaker 4: the Deshaun Watson that we expected. Well, Danny, when you're
- 21:10Speaker 4: suspended eleven games, you can't be around the facility. What
- 21:13Speaker 4: in the first ten weeks of the season. Yeah, I
- 21:15Speaker 4: mean you can't be around you can't build anything. He's
- 21:18Speaker 4: had a off season now, he's had OTA's mini camps,
- 21:24Speaker 4: summer training. He's spending that time. The receivers are spending
- 21:29Speaker 4: time with him. I think now it's a reasonable expectation
- 21:34Speaker 4: to think that we start to see more of the
- 21:36Speaker 4: twenty twenty Deshaun Watson, especially with that offensive line, because
- 21:39Speaker 4: that's a good offensive line. And I think now this
- 21:43Speaker 4: is a roster that for once we're looking at Cleveland
- 21:47Speaker 4: and probably more of what we say twice in the
- 21:49Speaker 4: last three years that we think, huh, better be careful
- 21:53Speaker 4: with these Browns.
- 21:54Speaker 5: This is a good ball club.
- 21:55Speaker 4: When people are picking Pittsburgh to finish behind them, that
- 21:59Speaker 4: tells you to respect They're starting to engender there.
- 22:02Speaker 5: Plus, it feels like there's an urgency in Cleveland.
- 22:04Speaker 4: Did they guy to get back to the playoffs, which
- 22:06Speaker 4: they did during the COVID year of twenty twenty.
- 22:09Speaker 1: Charles, Bengals fans love it when you and Ian call
- 22:12Speaker 1: Cincinnati games. We look forward to seeing you in Cleveland
- 22:15Speaker 1: and hopefully many times throughout the course of this season.
- 22:17Speaker 6: Thanks for your time.
- 22:19Speaker 5: Can't wait to see you in Cleveland. Dan, you take
- 22:21Speaker 5: care of yourself and travel safely.
