- 0:03Hour number two, Millery Condon, Iowa sports radio network, it's
- 0:07Des Moines sports station one O 6.3 KX and Obama Bob momentarily
- 0:11Scott Dockerman coming up covers the big 10 college football,
- 0:15Iowa etcetera for the athletic. We'll hear from him then Mr.
- 0:19Monday night a double dip here tonight.
- 0:21I think there's 4/5 of them on the schedule this year, 2 of
- 0:24them tonight. And then week #4 we get a couple
- 0:26is a couple of people pointed out on the phone during the
- 0:29break and baseball Betty in my text messages.
- 0:32Moises by Esteros hit the ball his first Major League home run
- 0:36that Anthony Rizzo dropped in the bleachers at Wrigley.
- 0:40So thank you for that. Let's get to Bama.
- 0:42And he joins us as we look back at college football.
- 0:44Bama, Trenton, Ken. Really fun weekend I thought
- 0:49overall. Oh my God.
- 0:50You know, so many good games and all of the different time slots,
- 0:53we're going to get to as many of them as we possibly can.
- 0:56And then at some point we got to get to the ACC's innovation that
- 1:01has got everybody talking, at least should, because that was
- 1:04unbelievable. But let's go back to Friday.
- 1:06The Big 12 is in the spotlight. Start there with a couple of
- 1:09Friday games and I thought both of them were for the most part
- 1:14pretty entertaining. A Houston's way better than I
- 1:17thought. I think Trent's been on them for
- 1:18a while. And Arizona and what was a non
- 1:20conference game, K State in Arizona doing battle.
- 1:23Just Trent back to Friday night. Yeah, the Big 12 over there all
- 1:27you can start moving to Saturday, but where do you want
- 1:29to? Go, you know, kind of Wigman.
- 1:30I knew he was a runner, but boy, he's tough.
- 1:32I mean, he's got some physicality to him now.
- 1:34Is he going to be able to stay up upright for the full season?
- 1:37I think that's a concern there. But was really impressed by the
- 1:40toughness that we saw out of him and Kansas State.
- 1:43There's something rotten inside that program.
- 1:46There is something wrong going on there.
- 1:48Just bad body language, bad decisions.
- 1:51They appear to be in really deep trouble.
- 1:53Yeah, I think you're 100% right. We'll see.
- 1:55Does that mean anything for Kleiman, do you think?
- 1:57I don't. Think so.
- 1:58I think he's built up enough that one bad year is OK, but
- 2:02there might have to be some changes.
- 2:03Maybe that lost to Colin Klein. Bigger than people thought.
- 2:06Yeah, he's now a Texas A&M's coordinator.
- 2:09What about Avery Johnson? Did we miss on him?
- 2:12The guy we're seeing now, yes. Yeah, that guy.
- 2:14Yeah. Bama, we all three of us
- 2:17thought, well, we can sell. We knew why.
- 2:19Will Howard left town, goes to Ohio State, wins the national
- 2:22champion. But my God, Avery Johnson must
- 2:24be something. Dark horse Heisman.
- 2:27Last year wasn't good. This year's been worse.
- 2:28What's what's going on here, do you think?
- 2:31Yeah, I don't know, because you, you look at him and you think,
- 2:33wow, this guy's got some talent, you know, and, and again, he
- 2:36shows flashes of it, but I don't, I don't know if it's
- 2:39coach's system over hype or whatever, but he's he's just not
- 2:43been good. I mean, there's no other way to
- 2:44get around it. We we thought that, I mean,
- 2:47that's and that's honestly why I had, you know, Kansas State is
- 2:49one of my, you know, as we all did, you know, four or five
- 2:54teams that you think can get into the Big 12 championship
- 2:56game because they've got a quarterback and they've got a,
- 2:59you know, coaching staff that's in there and, you know, they've
- 3:01got some games at home that you think they could win.
- 3:04And he this hasn't been good. I mean, I don't and I don't know
- 3:07what it is, honestly. I mean, I watched a lot of that
- 3:09the the opening game. I didn't see anything.
- 3:11It gets North Dakota State or Army and I watched I watched a
- 3:14decent amount of the game Friday night and and there's like you
- 3:19heard it right. There's just something off.
- 3:21I don't know what it is. I mean, I mean, obviously not
- 3:23around the program. So but something just it's not
- 3:27clicking there and I don't know what it is.
- 3:30I agree with Trent. I think, you know, Wigman is I
- 3:34mean, boy, he really fits nicely in that system.
- 3:37Talking about a nice fit, a pleasant surprise and he is
- 3:40tough. I mean, he is tough as nails
- 3:42When we saw that at A&M too when he was down there.
- 3:45I mean, there was a couple games he played where where he took
- 3:47some hits. But yeah, I mean, those were
- 3:50those were two really Good Friday night games.
- 3:52I love those kind of Friday to matter.
- 3:54You know, you're not getting the directional schools playing each
- 3:57other and we got another one, you know, Iowa, Rutgers and a
- 4:00huge, we can't wait Friday night.
- 4:01Love it. And, and then, yeah.
- 4:03And then Iowa State being off. So you get a free Saturday.
- 4:05I couldn't be any happier. I was going to say, I mean,
- 4:10perfect, right? Yeah.
- 4:11Flip around as much as you want, go crazy.
- 4:13But you know, the clones, I'm sure you guys have talked about
- 4:16that was really, I don't know if Arkansas State's very good.
- 4:18I'm not sure if that was a look ahead to the to the buyer or
- 4:21whatever, but you know, that was kind of underwhelming, I guess.
- 4:26I think the schedule took its toll, Bama.
- 4:28I think it did. That's what that's what I would
- 4:30agree, yeah. Yeah.
- 4:31And I don't discount that because, listen, they came back
- 4:34from Ireland and handled the business.
- 4:36Yep, they played their rival. Yep.
- 4:38They played their rival, so yeah, you know, and then now
- 4:41this is the game before my week. So I mean that I think, I think
- 4:44I don't discount that. I really don't.
- 4:46And you know, people just say, oh, it doesn't matter.
- 4:48You gotta get up every week. Wait, that's just not the way it
- 4:49works, right? So we all know that, but good
- 4:51for them. I mean, all you can be right now
- 4:53is four and. Oh, and they're four and.
- 4:55Oh, so and they've got a conference win.
- 4:57So that's that's probably as good as you could be.
- 5:00Do they have issues maybe things to work on?
- 5:02Sure. I think right now if I'm looking
- 5:05at this conference, I would probably put them.
- 5:09I think the game of the week is Saturday, but.
- 5:12I do too. I agree.
- 5:13I was just going to say I would put, I will put Iowa State and
- 5:17we know a lot can change. I put them in that group maybe
- 5:19with Arizona State and TCU just a notch behind Utah and Texas
- 5:23because that's a big, they're both those teams look really,
- 5:27really good. That's a good win for Utah.
- 5:29I know it was Wyoming on the road, whatever.
- 5:30But I mean, that's just that's a going, that's a 28 to 6, you
- 5:34know, thumping in the second-half, right?
- 5:36A really slow start to the game. They came out, they did it the
- 5:39way they wanted to do it. Yeah, it was 3.
- 5:41Nothing in the half, right? Yeah, 3 nothings at halftime,
- 5:44right? So, you know, Dan, Dan Piero
- 5:46looks really good. I think.
- 5:49I think that's something I think about something going there and
- 5:52I'm kind of regretting my Arizona State pick a little bit.
- 5:55But I think this they'll they'll have something to say about it.
- 5:57Sure. But yeah, I think Utah and Texas
- 5:59Tech right now, that game, that game Saturday in Salt Lake City
- 6:03is going to be big. And it's 10:00 local kick, which
- 6:06I don't like because I think it's, you know, isn't the Fox
- 6:09big news? I can't stand.
- 6:12I just can't. Why?
- 6:13You know, I understand, but why are you going to kick a football
- 6:17game off and in the morning? But could change so.
- 6:21Right. Exactly.
- 6:21Yeah, we know why. No big mystery, but yeah, Big
- 6:2412, you know, about what we thought.
- 6:26It's kind of a soup right now. And some teams are kind of
- 6:29rising and I think those are two that are kind of separating
- 6:31themselves a little. Bit did you see any brawl Trent
- 6:34of Backyard Brawl? Yeah, quite a bit.
- 6:36Did you? Yeah.
- 6:36What did you think Rich Rod got a?
- 6:38No, he didn't. The team's not very good.
- 6:40It was right for a game, anything can happen.
- 6:42That's what it was. I mean, he played that game.
- 6:44He'd take the rivalry aspect behind.
- 6:46Yeah, Pitt's a lot better football team rivalry.
- 6:48And Rich Rod got his revenge after that loss that we talked
- 6:51about last week, the last time he was there with West Virginia.
- 6:55All right. I don't mean jersey special,
- 6:56wasn't it? We talked about that Friday.
- 6:58I mean, he's going to lose a game that he's got.
- 7:00He's got better team, he has the better team, right?
- 7:02Yeah, and they lose it. But anyway, whatever.
- 7:05Yeah, it was. We knew going in it wasn't the
- 7:09shiniest week in in the Big 10, Trent.
- 7:12I got a bone to pick with somebody.
- 7:14What is it? James Franklin, What did?
- 7:16He do. Threw a touchdown on the last
- 7:18play of the game to win 52 six and get inside the number.
- 7:20I didn't have a bet on the game. It's not being being a
- 7:22degenerate. I thought they blew the cover.
- 7:24The game was blown at the very last play of the game the other
- 7:27way. I I must have read that wrong.
- 7:29James Franklin, he does this all the time now.
- 7:32They did give up the score. This was with two minutes left.
- 7:35He's still throwing the ball around to get inside the number
- 7:37at that point. And thank God the Villanova got
- 7:40there. James Franklin, though.
- 7:42Play the game, I think. James Franklin doing these
- 7:44things time in and time out, He's just, he's not an easy
- 7:48person to wrap your mind around. He's a bad person.
- 7:50Worry more about actually beating somebody good as opposed
- 7:53to covering the number against these tomato cans.
- 7:55He is just such an unlikeable figure.
- 7:57Anything else in the Big 10 that's enough?
- 7:59That is. That's good, though.
- 8:00I'm glad you got that out of your system.
- 8:02What did you see in the Big 10 Bama?
- 8:05Well, what I saw Friday nights, what we talked about and the
- 8:07cost of Sean Foster's job, you know, that the UCLA right now,
- 8:11they might be the worst team in America.
- 8:13I mean, I'm, they're, I think they're the worst Power Five
- 8:16team. They're they're worse than a lot
- 8:18of Power Four teams, as they proved Friday night.
- 8:21New Mexico just went in there and absolutely thumped them in
- 8:23front of about maybe 20,000 fans on a Friday night.
- 8:27In a way, there is just nothing going on in that program and it
- 8:30might about be about to get worse because you know when you
- 8:32fire a coach. Everybody can leave.
- 8:35Everybody's gone, baby, so I don't know what they're going to
- 8:38do there. And again, this is just, I don't
- 8:41know, I don't know that this really has anything to do with
- 8:44realignment. But I mean, they they can't be
- 8:46in a good position out there. They they got to be bleeding
- 8:49money a little bit. Now they're going to have to
- 8:50bring in another coaching staff, you know, whoever wants that
- 8:52job. You know, Chip Kelly left to
- 8:54become a coordinator, OK? He left UCLA to become a
- 8:58coordinator, OK, Let that sink in about how bad that program
- 9:02is. They didn't fire him.
- 9:03He left. So I just think there's just
- 9:06nothing there. I'm I'm with you on Franklin.
- 9:09I mean, God, just he's so and I really like Penn State.
- 9:12I have that's always been one of those teams that I don't know
- 9:14why I kind of always, you know, sort of like them rooted for
- 9:17him. I find that really hard.
- 9:19And I like their players. I really like our and some of
- 9:22their players, But you can't root for that guy.
- 9:24He's just he's just a he's got no moral compass.
- 9:27I don't know how else to put it. You know, Wisconsin didn't offer
- 9:31much resistance against Alabama, as expected.
- 9:35Not a whole lot. I mean, like you said, kind of a
- 9:37yarn. I felt bad for Purdue with the
- 9:39three hour rain delay. Yeah.
- 9:40Oh, I didn't know that was there.
- 9:42That's too bad. Yeah, You know, I'm flipping
- 9:44over about 2:30. I'm just going to watch this.
- 9:46And, you know, rain delay. And it was a they had the
- 9:50lightning delay 30 minutes before kickoff is everybody's in
- 9:53the stadium, everybody's out there warming up and then they
- 9:55have the lightning delay. They got to empty it and it's 3
- 9:58hours late kicking off. But you know, Purdue and there's
- 10:02no moral victories. Anybody will tell you that.
- 10:04But they kind of hung around and if I think they had three
- 10:08turnovers in the red zone, 3 picks in the red zone.
- 10:11So, you know, I'm not taking too much away from this if I'm USD,
- 10:15I think the delay probably helped them because, you know,
- 10:17the three hour body clock change or whatever it was.
- 10:19So but I've kind of felt bad for them.
- 10:22But other than that, it's kind of a, you know, a ho hum week, I
- 10:26guess. You know, Oregon did what they
- 10:28were supposed to, Ohio State did what they were supposed to,
- 10:30Illinois did what they were supposed to.
- 10:33You know, So other than, you know, more negative, I guess,
- 10:36and and then positive in the Big 10 this week.
- 10:39All right, let's go to the SEC and get your thoughts on on that
- 10:43conference, Trent. Georgia, Texas or Georgia?
- 10:46Tennessee rather was an Alzheimer and LSU.
- 10:49Florida wasn't bad either. Yeah, a whole night of it.
- 10:52Ole Miss, Arkansas, Ole Miss walking wooded unit with
- 10:55Simmons. We talked about him last week
- 10:57with his injury, he was limping around out there.
- 10:59Still got it done. Arkansas is going to beat
- 11:01somebody, maybe maybe Notre Dame.
- 11:02We talked about that at the top. Petrino, he's got that offense
- 11:06cooked up and Taylor Green, he might be the most entertaining
- 11:08guy to watch in the country. He is so much fun and played so
- 11:12well in that one against Old Miss.
- 11:14Overall, just a great week in Florida.
- 11:17Speaking of big jobs, we had two firings this week.
- 11:20Boy DJ leg way, 5 interceptions in the game.
- 11:24Bama. Who are people talking about for
- 11:26the next Gator head coach? Well, there's a lot of names,
- 11:31you know, people are, you know, throwing out and some of them
- 11:33are stupid, right? You know, Nick Saban, not
- 11:35happening, right? You know, one name that I see a
- 11:39lot, guys. And he said he wants to get back
- 11:41into coaching and that's Jon Gruden, and he's sitting right
- 11:44there. He's never coached in college.
- 11:46I don't know that that would be a terrible hire for them if they
- 11:50can, if they can get him. But you know, it's it's, I don't
- 11:54think it's going to happen. I don't think they can afford
- 11:56it, guys. I mean, again, the buyout is
- 11:59just NIL. I think, and maybe I'm proven
- 12:03wrong for all but a handful of programs.
- 12:06I think NIL has changed the way that you can hire and fire
- 12:10coaches because you've got these enormous buyouts now.
- 12:13Like, you know, we're talking about the board down here after
- 12:17the Florida State game. Well, he's got a $70 million
- 12:19buyout. You're going to have to pay
- 12:22probably that much to hire a new staff.
- 12:26And oh, by the way, you've got about a, you know, I don't know,
- 12:2815 to $20 million NIL bill year over year to keep the current
- 12:33roster. Alabama don't have that kind of
- 12:35money. OK, maybe Texas does.
- 12:38Maybe A&M does. Well, they used to, but they're
- 12:40paying 78 million to Jimbo Fisher, for crying out loud.
- 12:43Right, exactly. So, but you know, there's
- 12:4578,000,000 oil money out, right? There's oil money out until I
- 12:50mean, but again, I don't know, I'm not a member of any of those
- 12:53programs, but I just know that a lot of these coaches are going
- 12:56to probably hang around because the buyouts are prohibited.
- 12:59But you mentioned Lagway. I mean, that was awful.
- 13:03And I was texting a couple of Florida buddies amount of money.
- 13:06Is there a Plan B? And they got Emery Jones down
- 13:08there and they said there's really not.
- 13:10I'm like, well, whoever the backup is needs more reps this
- 13:13week because all five of those interceptions were poor
- 13:17decisions by Lagway. Not, not anything, you know, tip
- 13:21ball over the middle or whatever.
- 13:23They were just poor decisions at the wrong time in the double
- 13:25coverage. You contrast that to what we saw
- 13:29in Knoxville and I thought Aguilar and oh God, the torch,
- 13:34Aquarius, Stockton, Stockton, Stockton.
- 13:38I mean, boy, that dime that he dropped right at the end was was
- 13:42just a thing of beauty. I mean, that was a Russell
- 13:45Wilson kind of throw. I mean, just right on the pylon
- 13:48in the cone and in the corner of the end front corner.
- 13:51But that was that was just a great game.
- 13:54But same old story for Tennessee, right?
- 13:56Can't beat Georgia or they you know, he slayed the he slayed
- 13:59the Florida dragon, he slayed the Alabama dragon.
- 14:03I think he's beating LSU. He can't get past that.
- 14:05So you know, but again, I think they're a playoff team.
- 14:09They started out that game, the first three drives.
- 14:11I'm like, George is going to give up 55 here.
- 14:14But you know, Kirby Smart, again, he doesn't panic.
- 14:16We talked about it, doesn't panic.
- 14:18They don't get flustered. They'll figure it out And and
- 14:20they did and, but just a great game, you know, I feel bad for
- 14:25South Carolina, you know, Sellers.
- 14:26But good for Clark Lee though, right?
- 14:28Good for Clark Lee and good for Vanderbilt.
- 14:32I don't think that game they might have won anyway.
- 14:34I'm not taking anything away from them.
- 14:36It wouldn't have been 31 to 7 sellers play.
- 14:39OK, OK. So I told you that they're going
- 14:42to beat somebody and they they're going to probably be a
- 14:44couple more before it's over with.
- 14:46I thought it was a huge win for A&M.
- 14:48Yep. Bad loss for Notre Dame.
- 14:50I saw their playoff chances are now.
- 14:51If you want to, you know, get into the analytics or below 10%.
- 14:55Are they really? That's that's what ESPN said.
- 14:58You know, their playoff predictor, whatever it is,
- 15:00they're sitting at 8% right now. Keeping in mind their name is
- 15:03Notre Dame and it's still 10%. Exactly.
- 15:06So I mean, but we talked about it, what what's left on their
- 15:09schedule, you go, wow, it's a good win.
- 15:11Unless you were a. Championship game, they can't,
- 15:13they can't get in that route. They can't win a conference and
- 15:15back in. So, you know, Ole Miss, do we
- 15:19have a quarterback controversy down there?
- 15:21I mean, their backup came in and played phenomenal in that game.
- 15:26And he threw for 350 yards and he ran for a couple more
- 15:29touchdowns. Chambliss.
- 15:30Chambliss. Yeah.
- 15:32I mean, I don't know. I mean, Lane Kiffin usually goes
- 15:35with a hot hand. But we'll we'll see what happens
- 15:37there. Alabama, nobody's going to care
- 15:40about that win, you know, until they beat Georgia in two weeks.
- 15:44They both teams have a buy this week, so that's kind of your
- 15:46game of the week in two weeks, but kind of an eventful week,
- 15:50you know, really good week. Florida's a mess, and us along
- 15:54with Florida being a mess, guys, LSU didn't exactly light it.
- 15:58Up. No, they didn't.
- 15:59I'm with you. I mean you take away.
- 16:01Don't ask Brian Kelly about it, though.
- 16:02Really. But he was salty.
- 16:04Right. Oh God, he talked about
- 16:05insufferable. Here's another guy that's just
- 16:07impossible to root for, right? You know, and, and, but look,
- 16:12they scored thirteen points. You take away a pick 6, which
- 16:16you know, is scored by the defense, not the offense.
- 16:18And that game is 13 to 10. And that's a it's a totally
- 16:21different game. Even with five interceptions,
- 16:23that game should have been that game should have been over early
- 16:27and they couldn't, they couldn't put them away.
- 16:28Florida's defense is better, but LSU is something's going on
- 16:33there on offense. They got another Southwest Tech
- 16:36Louisiana directional school this week before they really get
- 16:39into it again. So before they get into the rest
- 16:41of it. So they got some things all.
- 16:43Right before we get to the ACC scores, Trent and I talked about
- 16:47this earlier. We both absolutely love it.
- 16:48Bama, you pointed out in our text thread, we're both watching
- 16:51at the same time and just in awe of what we are listening to and
- 16:55watching is the transparency. We were taken behind the
- 16:57curtain, which is awesome as they the replay room was was
- 17:02live. We're listening to everything
- 17:03they said while they were talking to the white hat,
- 17:05etcetera. This has to catch on, I would
- 17:09think power for conference wide, right, don't you think?
- 17:12See the Big 12, the Big 10, the SEC catching up to this.
- 17:15I it's just phenomenal. We have to see this.
- 17:18You have to see it. And guys, I remember what the
- 17:23I'd seen it before in a game and I'm like, well, that's pretty
- 17:25cool. But when I'm watching that
- 17:26Georgia Tech cleansing game, which was a phenomenal football.
- 17:30Really good, wasn't it? It really was.
- 17:31I mean, this old school, I mean, there's some guys that are going
- 17:35to just have a be in the ice tub this week on both teams.
- 17:39I mean, just beat the crap out of each other.
- 17:41Loved it. But on that one replay review,
- 17:43you know, and they called it a touchdown on the field.
- 17:46And I give Lewis Riddick credit. He's like, I don't know, guys.
- 17:49And they went over reviewed it. And the second they flip it on,
- 17:52you know, you just hear the conversation and what they're
- 17:55looking at and they're, they're, they're trying to be, you know
- 17:59the thing I like about it, right?
- 18:00You get a demeanor, you get a sense of the like the referees
- 18:03demeanor. Is he calm?
- 18:05Is he rattled? Is he confused?
- 18:07Do they not know what the hell they're doing?
- 18:09You know, both sides of it, right?
- 18:11But you just see him working through, OK, we got this shot,
- 18:13we got this shot, we got this shot.
- 18:15OK, go back to this. We'll go back to your overhead,
- 18:16whatever it is. And he goes, Yep, I see him
- 18:18have, you know, he's got control.
- 18:20But then he bobbles it and by the time he regains it, it's out
- 18:22of bounds. And then, you know, you think,
- 18:24OK, well, that's done. Well, OK, where are we with the
- 18:26clock? Are we good with?
- 18:27That's. Awesome.
- 18:27You know, I mean everything, the down marker, the down marker,
- 18:32right? Are we down marker?
- 18:33OK, all that stuff is just phenomenal what you have to go
- 18:36through And the thing that I think is and here's where I
- 18:39think you have have to do it if you're the other conferences,
- 18:42it's not just cool, right? And it is very cool.
- 18:45I for transparency, man. And whether we like it or
- 18:49whether we don't, we've got gambling proliferating through
- 18:53college football, right? And we've got payer players
- 18:56getting paid. And I can't tell you how many
- 18:58times I've, you know, been on, you know, seen the old chat room
- 19:02stuff, right, where replay, Oh, well, this Vegas buzzer and this
- 19:06guy went to there, right? So you can see, you know,
- 19:09exactly what they're going through and exactly what they're
- 19:13looking at in order to come up with the decision on the field.
- 19:17And I think it just takes away 99% of the conspiracy theories
- 19:23that can happen in a situation like that about, you know, well,
- 19:26this guy went to the daughter, goes to this school.
- 19:28So that's why they called that an obvious, you know, whatever.
- 19:31And so whether you ultimately agree with it or whether you
- 19:34don't, and sometimes it's just upheld because they don't have a
- 19:37Clearview, right? And you're always going to have
- 19:38your conspiracy. Theory.
- 19:40We would have heard them discussing that they don't have
- 19:42a Clearview. Exactly, exactly, 100%.
- 19:46And you're always going to have your nuts out there.
- 19:48They're just going to, everything's a conspiracy,
- 19:50right? It's like every rigged, rigged,
- 19:52rigged, rigged, rigged, right. But I mean, my gosh, you, you
- 19:56absolutely 100% have to have it is the best thing I've seen.
- 20:01Since the yellow line was what Trent and I came up with.
- 20:04Exactly, 100% is exactly where I was going from the yellow line.
- 20:09And especially since we started with nil and gambling and
- 20:14betting and all this type of thing and you know, live bets
- 20:16and props and all this kind of stuff.
- 20:18I mean, it is the best thing that I've seen and it is
- 20:21phenomenal. And if the SEC and Big 10 and
- 20:24Big 12 don't get on board, then we need to have a congressional
- 20:27hearing to make them because it would just eliminate a lot of
- 20:30stuff. Man, that was good.
- 20:31I can't. I'm geek, so you can tell which
- 20:34is, you know, stabbed in his own way, but it's just, it was just
- 20:37phenomenal. It really was, Trent one asked
- 20:39about one game, so we got like 30 seconds left.
- 20:42I thought Boston. When I watched Michigan State
- 20:45and Boston College, I thought, well, maybe Michigan.
- 20:47Michigan State's OK, but Boston College goes to Stanford and
- 20:50gets beat. By clock we talk about we talk
- 20:54about it with West Coast teams coming back and playing those
- 20:57early kickoffs. That's a late night for BC, as
- 21:00we're going to see with Michigan State coming up with Washington
- 21:02here in a couple of weeks. Clemson, Georgia Tech was
- 21:05phenomenal, South Florida clock struck midnight.
- 21:09I think that's basically it. But we got to run, brother.
- 21:12We're out of time. But thanks as always.
- 21:14We'll have a really tough slated game, good slated games to get
- 21:17through when we reconvene Friday at 1:00.
- 21:20All right, bud. Sounds good guys.
- 21:22Take care, have. A good week.
- 21:23See you, buddy. Bama, Bob, Trent and I recap on
- 21:25the week in college football. Scott Docman next.
- 21:28Miller and I Miller and I'm Miller and Condon talking sports
- 21:31with with you. Thanks for being with us on the
- 21:34Iowa Sports Radio Network. Hi, Miller.
- 21:48Condon, welcome back. Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 21:52Trent Condon, Ken Miller with you until well the top of the
- 21:56hour. Let's get to Scott Dockman wrote
- 21:58a good piece on Kirk Ference breaking Woody Hayes mark over
- 22:02the weekend as I was stuck past UMass on Saturday night and Doc
- 22:07joins us. Doc, Trent and Ken, good to talk
- 22:09to you. I did not know about the cake,
- 22:11Doc, until I read your read your column at the Athletic.
- 22:16But I guess Hayden got a cake and Ference did not get a cake,
- 22:20but he did does have the record. Good to talk to you, Doc.
- 22:23How are you? I'm doing well.
- 22:26Yeah. Yeah, certainly he yeah.
- 22:30He had a cake coming off the field into the locker room from
- 22:34Terry Branstad and Hunter Rawlings, the president of Iowa
- 22:37at the time, to celebrate his 100th win back in 1991 when they
- 22:42beat Minnesota. And that was the snow game when
- 22:45the snow angels were going for with Dane and Hughes.
- 22:48So there wasn't very many people there because it was a Blizzard.
- 22:52But yeah, that's, I guess those days are long gone when when
- 22:56state officials celebrate people, you know, having
- 23:00milestones and at universities, at least the one in the eastern
- 23:03part of the state. You know, Doc, yes, of course
- 23:08Iowa would have liked to get the win against Iowa State the week
- 23:10before, but there was something special being in Kinnock Stadium
- 23:14and also having Anthony Heron on the call, a guy that helped
- 23:17bridge that gap there. You can see how special it was
- 23:20for Anthony as he was doing that on field interview afterwards
- 23:23and and a longer one than normally get over the PA.
- 23:26Yeah, you want to have that win against Iowa State.
- 23:29But I think this will be a special memory for Kirk, the
- 23:31family and and for a lot of Hawkeye fans just being in
- 23:34Kinnock and having somebody that was part of that build, part of
- 23:37the 218 two and 18 start to be able to do the on field
- 23:40interview after the game. Yeah, it was certainly poetic
- 23:44justice to have Anthony there and Anthony's turn into, you
- 23:47know, a very talented broadcaster over the last, you
- 23:50know, 10 to 15 years. And, and to have him there to be
- 23:53able to call the game. I was texting in the middle of
- 23:55the week. I said, hey, no pressure, but
- 23:57you know, your call from this game and then what you have and
- 24:00what you're going to do on the field that's going to be
- 24:02replayed for, you know, for decades to come for, you know,
- 24:06big 10 networkers there for the big moments, Unlike it's a
- 24:10commissioner. And so I think that when you
- 24:12have that, you know, and have somebody like Anthony Heron
- 24:16there to to really kind of tie a bow on how challenging this it
- 24:22really was for Kirk to get off the mat.
- 24:25I my our headline, my headline then was, you know, from 2 and
- 24:2818 to two O 6 and you know, back in 99 and 2000, nobody would
- 24:33have thought that this was possible been more likely that
- 24:36he'll be fired by 2002 then go 8 O and two in the big 10.
- 24:41So it was good to have him there And and I agree with you, you
- 24:44know, going into the season or even taking all the way back to
- 24:48the bowl game against Mizzou in some ways I'm like, you know
- 24:51what, it'd be a shame if he broke it against Albany in the
- 24:54season opener just because there's nothing at stake.
- 24:57But but I think in hindsight, now you look at it and it's
- 25:00probably better that you you're people are able to celebrate him
- 25:05and do it in a way that, you know, was really kind of
- 25:07uncomfortable for him because he just doesn't like that stuff.
- 25:10But but I think also he's it's richly deserved based on his
- 25:13career. So to make the day and the night
- 25:16about him, have him kind of be the focus for the, you know, Big
- 25:1910 network. And I I thought it was really a
- 25:21good touch. I, I did too.
- 25:23And you know what I and in your peace talk, I like I like the
- 25:27the self reflection too from Ferris when it sounds like, you
- 25:30know, when he himself realized after the bad start to his
- 25:34career, this just might not work.
- 25:36That was the only time seemingly that he's questioned himself and
- 25:39I when obviously we know how it turned out.
- 25:41But just the fact back then, even he realized he heard the
- 25:44calls that maybe this isn't going to be for him.
- 25:48Yeah, when he he's mentioned it a few times and he really, I, I
- 25:53had A Midsummer interview with him where he, he really kind of
- 25:56described that, that moment when Sam Aiella went down and, you
- 26:00know, it's like a shot, he said. And you just go, you know, maybe
- 26:05this isn't it. And, and for actually for him to
- 26:07admit that he spent, you know, part of that night just kind of
- 26:10wondering is this going to happen?
- 26:11It it really kind of shows. That it's it's.
- 26:14These guys aren't robots, you know that.
- 26:16They are human and, and things happen and but then for him to,
- 26:20you know, next day, hey, let's go, you know, and, and that's
- 26:23kind of been the hallmark of his career and why I've said it
- 26:27before that he's what what to me is the the separator from him
- 26:32from being an average coach to a very good upper level coach is
- 26:35the ability to to conquer adversity when the team is
- 26:42struggling, when you have a bad loss or there's something bad
- 26:45off the field and it looks like, oh man, this team's going to
- 26:48really fall apart, that they pull it all together and they
- 26:51make it work. And a lot of times they have
- 26:53epic wins out of those situations.
- 26:55And that's not just an average coach that can do that,
- 26:58especially in a place like Iowa. I mean, it really takes a
- 27:02tremendous coach to do those things And, and Kirk has done
- 27:05that over the course of his career.
- 27:07So I think that's that's a testament, I think that he's
- 27:10he's been able to do. Doc you no college football
- 27:13history as well as anybody. This is a record for the Big 10.
- 27:17It's hard to put it in context. We're talking about a lot of
- 27:19different eras, a lot of different guys, and the
- 27:21longevity is definitely a part of it.
- 27:24Now where where does Kurt Ferret sit when you talk about the
- 27:27pantheon in the Big 10? In college football, when we
- 27:29talk about great coaches, there's not going to be a
- 27:31national championship to Big 10 titles.
- 27:34Where does Kurt kind of sit when you look at it in the big
- 27:37picture view? That's a great question because
- 27:41I think in some ways you you kind of equate it to what you
- 27:44see with maybe passing statistics in the NFL.
- 27:48Like is you know, there's going to be quarterbacks coming up and
- 27:53then you're going to have 50,000 yards and you look at a guy like
- 27:55Troy Aikman, you're like, you're not even close.
- 27:57But you weren't any good. It's like he was pretty good.
- 28:00It's just a different era. And I think you got to do the
- 28:03same thing here with with Kirk. I mean, he has the most losses
- 28:06in Big 10 history too. So which means that he's coached
- 28:10the most games and his longevity is something to really be cold.
- 28:14But I don't, I don't think anybody and probably himself
- 28:17would put his career on the same level as of what B Hayes or
- 28:20Beauchembach or each of whom won 13 Big 10 titles.
- 28:24You know, he has been in that conversation.
- 28:27So I don't know that he's in that category.
- 28:30But I think when you start to go, you know, somewhere between,
- 28:35you know, and I have to look at the whole list and make this big
- 28:38analysis, But, you know, somewhere between 5 and 15 I
- 28:41think is fair because he does have the most wins in the Big
- 28:4510. He's been there from, you know,
- 28:48when they were an 11 year 11 team league to now an 18 team
- 28:51league from the going from largely regional to to national.
- 28:55He was there eight years before BTN came into existence, but way
- 29:00before the CFP became the thing. And he had his teams in two
- 29:06different decades go undefeated in the regular season.
- 29:09So I think that's he's definitely top 10 to me, you
- 29:14know, top upper echelon. You got to get kind of, I got to
- 29:17win national titles or at least win, you know, a handful or more
- 29:21Big 10 titles before I probably put you at #1.
- 29:24No, but I do like the way Gary Danielson put it in your peace
- 29:26talk. And because he he thinks about
- 29:28Iowa coaches, he says and he quote, he's quoted to say I
- 29:32think of Hayden first. But when it comes to what he
- 29:35did, and I want to find the quote right in front of me
- 29:38because of the 10 win seasons, where the hell is it?
- 29:43The fact that that's almost like winning a national?
- 29:45Here it is. I think you can make an argument
- 29:46though. The number of 10 win seasons
- 29:48he's had at Iowa for 27 years might be equal to winning a
- 29:52national championship at Michigan or at Ohio State.
- 29:55You have to remember where he's doing this at.
- 29:58Exactly, and and there is a different level of of
- 30:01difficulty. It it honestly, I feel like the
- 30:05best coaching job I've ever seen in college sports, college
- 30:09football is Bill Snyder resurrecting or not even
- 30:12resurrecting. I mean, dad, it was he was in an
- 30:15urn. You know, he was in an urn and
- 30:17he brought it to life, you know, and but I think Kirk and and
- 30:22Hayden too, and are in that category because they did it at
- 30:26a place as we all know and love that this state doesn't produce,
- 30:30you know, 30 Division 1 caliber prospects.
- 30:33Now, they may be built into that at both the universities now,
- 30:37but certainly Iowa for most of Kirk's career where, you know,
- 30:40he could grab some Joe, you know, from some small town and
- 30:42turn them into a starter, but but they aren't ready made.
- 30:46And for him to do it time after time after time, you know, it
- 30:48really shows his ability and, and prowess as a coach.
- 30:52And of course, there's some legitimate this, you know,
- 30:55detractions. I think, you know, having his
- 30:57son is OC is something that really does stand out to me.
- 31:01Because when you, you, you honestly have to wonder, OK,
- 31:05how, how much better would they have been with somebody else in
- 31:07that chair? And I think that's that's
- 31:09something legitimacy you add to the resume, but it doesn't
- 31:13detract overall from how good of a coach he is.
- 31:16Well, you're there for the coordination.
- 31:18Kirk Ference breaking the record, but there was, yes, a
- 31:20football game that was played out there.
- 31:22Some signs of life out of the passing game, albeit against the
- 31:25UMass. We put the caveat in there.
- 31:27I'll give us a take away in the passing game.
- 31:29And is there hope going forward as Big 10 play begins Friday
- 31:33night? You know what it was, it was
- 31:36good to see them be able to to attack down the field first two
- 31:40possessions to really decide. And and that's what part of the
- 31:44pregame plan was, was to really go down the field.
- 31:47And and I think that was a confidence boost that you can't
- 31:52imagine for this program to be able to do that for the
- 31:55receivers. There's still too many drops.
- 31:57There are four more that I counted, and that's just too
- 32:00many. You can't have that, you know,
- 32:02maybe one to two Max a game. And the last two games combined,
- 32:06they've had eight. You know, that's something
- 32:08that's got to be rectified. You know, and maybe there needs
- 32:11to be some strong words for the the position coach if you keep
- 32:14doing it that way. But then and I, I think Mark
- 32:17Gronowski is is take is taking stride as a quarterback.
- 32:21He's playing at a better level than I was had at that position
- 32:24for a little while. And we'll know a little bit more
- 32:26this week. But you know, as far as the the
- 32:30big picture goes, this is a team that can't afford to think big
- 32:33picture. It's limited.
- 32:36It's got some skill, it's got the ability to get better.
- 32:39But if you look at the aggregate of the schedule, it'll just eat
- 32:42you a lie. They got to focus on the task at
- 32:44hand. I think they're going to be in a
- 32:45lot of close games. I think this one may be close to
- 32:48against Rutgers on a short week because I think Rutgers may be a
- 32:51little bit better than they have been in the past.
- 32:53And Greg Schiano is a really good coach.
- 32:55So it's going to be about how, how do they handle close tough
- 33:00situations and, and can they grow from them?
- 33:03And, and I think they can, but, but again, you can't get too far
- 33:06ahead of yourself or it's just going to collapse on you.
- 33:09What what a difference a week makes, and I dare say the
- 33:11opponent as well, but Kaden Wegen, he couldn't look any any
- 33:16worse than he did against Iowa State.
- 33:17Was his worst game as a Hawkeye seemingly, but then he comes out
- 33:21against UMass and and just put his stake right in the ground.
- 33:25What? What a game he had, Doc.
- 33:29It was, you know, that that punch that he fielded at his
- 33:32five. I'm like.
- 33:33What are you doing? I mean you.
- 33:35Know just let it go. And.
- 33:37Said, you know, yeah, I mean, it was just well, it officially it
- 33:42was unfortunately for him at the five, it was at the four he
- 33:45would he would have the Big 10 record for long.
- 33:47Oh no, really. League history, yeah.
- 33:50So officially it was a 95, but to have that and be able to
- 33:54return and he had a really good return earlier too.
- 33:56And then of course, his touchdown run, you know, really
- 34:00an impressive week for him and and it showed he was able to
- 34:02bounce back because, you know, Charlie Jones had a couple of
- 34:06those types of games too, where he really stunk and then all of
- 34:08a sudden, boom, you know, he had, you know, some amazing
- 34:11moments And and I, you know, in Iowa for a while was really bad
- 34:15at returning punts and kickoffs too.
- 34:18I even, I go back to like Micah Hyde, who was unfair to him
- 34:21because he was a good Turner, but he didn't get to do it.
- 34:24But then you look at since Amir Smith, Marcette and Charlie
- 34:27Jones and Cooper, you know, Kevante Martin and Manley wasn't
- 34:31bad. You know, Cooper obviously was
- 34:33fantastic. And now, now with Kate Wegen,
- 34:37they've really had some really good returners and, you know,
- 34:41some records being set and he was, you know, he was he was
- 34:45only just a few yards, you know, maybe one big return away from
- 34:48from retaking that record, you know, with from Will likely who
- 34:51took it from now Kennett for single gain yard on record
- 34:55cards. Yeah.
- 34:56Good stuff, Scott Docman, The Athletic Dock, what have you got
- 34:59coming up this week? I'm covering Illinois and
- 35:02Indiana, which is the biggest game in that series is history,
- 35:05no question. So I'm excited about that and
- 35:07I'm writing about kind of a preview on that.
- 35:09I'm doing a Big 10 mailbag, so you know, that's kind of fun.
- 35:13I haven't done a mailbag for a while since I was doing
- 35:15exclusively Iowa 1, so I'm kind of in the middle of that.
- 35:19It's kind of fun thus far. Good stuff, doc.
- 35:21We'll look forward to it. Thank you, Doc.
- 35:23We'll talk to you next week. Appreciate it.
- 35:25All right. See you guys.
- 35:26See, but Scott Dockerman from the athletic heck of a fun game
- 35:30really was even the opponent was overmatched.
- 35:32Yes, Mr. Monday night, he's next.
- 35:34He's got a double dip to get into Miller and Condon talking
- 35:37sports with you on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 35:41I'm Hillary Condon, welcome back.
- 35:43Final couple of minutes here on a Monday.
- 35:45Some breaking news pursuant to the Vikings.
- 35:48JJ McCarthy's already been ruled out that for this Sunday versus
- 35:52Cincinnati. So Browning versus Wentz will be

- 36:15That's what told you. Caleb Williams.

- 36:22All right, let's get Mr. Monday Night in here.
- 36:24Double dip Tampa at Houston Chargers Raiders.

- 36:52Be a monster performance after everybody's first couple weeks
- 36:55outside of your week 1 would have been dreadful.
- 36:58Lucas, yourself and Sean already 4:00 and 1:00 with the Chargers
- 37:03to go for me, but we'll see. Which of these two games do you

- 37:33decrepit organization. We got a minute.
- 37:37It's all yours. Watching that garbage is bad.
- 37:41It's more of the same. All this crap about Ben Johnson.

- 37:47It's the same crap year after year after year.
- 37:51It is rotten from the inside out.
- 37:53This organization is awful. It is absolutely the same
- 37:59things. It doesn't matter who they bring
- 38:01in. It doesn't matter the coach.
- 38:02It doesn't matter the quarterback.
- 38:04It is the same thing. It is an organizational failure.
- 38:08Year after year after year. Nothing's going to change.
- 38:12Virginia's dead. It's the same crap because
- 38:15they're idiots. Sons are still there.
- 38:16It's the same things year after year after year.
- 38:20How long? Or, or maybe they already are.
- 38:21Are you hearing cries for Tyson Beijing?
- 38:24Come on, yes, they're they're out there, but I am not going to
- 38:28subscribe to that theory change the quarterback.
