Transcript
- 0:33I'm so drunk. 32, thank you very much for joining us again, at
- 0:45hamster with a blunt penknife. As we tackle the final episode
- 0:49of death, to the Daleks to part three ended with a cliffhanger,
- 0:53very odd Cliffhanger and we were having some debate as to why why
- 0:58the cliff and was like that and what the original Cliffhanger
- 1:00would have been, absolutely right when you said that, the
- 1:05Cliffhangers should have been the Daleks according to the
- 1:08complete history. Part 3 was running short while
- 1:11part for was over length. Consequently, the Cliffhanger
- 1:14between the two episodes was moved from the direct threat to
- 1:18the doctor and Bilal of the Daleks cornering them in an
- 1:21Alcove to a more passive sequence showing the duo finding
- 1:26a pattern floor. Yes.
- 1:32That's a lovely way of putting it passing sequence.
- 1:36Can I just say, then set the record straight people.
- 1:39Some people have seemed to suggest that some of my facts on
- 1:42this thing are erroneous or sketchy at best.
- 1:45And there's proof that I don't know.
- 1:48Hey guys, you know what, there's a moment in Frontier in space as
- 1:53well, right? Episode 1 where the 0 g storm
- 1:58onto the ship and Joe Grant looks up and the ogre on comes
- 2:02right down over a and I swear to God that was supposed to be the
- 2:05Cliffhanger as well because it's shot.
- 2:08Exactly like a cliffhanger and then ends look, man.
- 2:11Just go in you know all the dragons.
- 2:14Yeah. Yeah.
- 2:15That sounds like it doesn't it and there's a lot of dodgy
- 2:18moving about of scenes in the Pertwee era.
- 2:22Mark I'll good friend. Fraser Gregory has hit us.
- 2:28Although I'm not gonna fire you with a question.
- 2:31I think it's very leading. Question at that you know does
- 2:35Terry Nation deserve his reputation as a Dick, triple
- 2:38plotting hack. I think I know I disagree.
- 2:45I don't think is a predictable flooding hack.
- 2:47I think is a very good hack. I think think what he does, he
- 2:54does very well. He does use the same.
- 2:56Critique cookie cutter, but it is.
- 2:59He makes good cookies. It doesn't make it okay.
- 3:02Yeah, I think if you're going to think about like archetypal
- 3:06Doctor Who like perfect stereotypical Doctor Who it's
- 3:11God, isn't he from the Daleks onwards?
- 3:14You know. Yeah and and he does some kind
- 3:19of said a few times he doesn't make the most of it as the great
- 3:22ideas that he has. But he does have great ideas and
- 3:25you know he knows how to you know, put a situation together
- 3:28where throw people into danger and all that's to it.
- 3:31I think he does the same things with this TV series.
- 3:34You know you did the same thing with survivors.
- 3:35It creates phenomenally dark, apocalyptic drama, I know.
- 3:41Oh, he had a terrorist ugly and it became about farming but like
- 3:44it didn't really go anywhere and then obviously he created Blake
- 3:497, which was, you know, obviously had legs.
- 3:53But really it probably wasn't until Chris pouch came in that
- 3:57it started to show. It's real potential.
- 3:59So it's like, he's a great art. Maybe you should have been a
- 4:01script editor, like the idea, you know, Yeah, some PS somebody
- 4:07like Sydney Newman or you know, kind of came up with the bare
- 4:10bones of Doctor Who and then, you know, let other people run
- 4:13with it. So I think parallettes says like
- 4:18there's like a danger every five minutes.
- 4:20We're at our nation's work so there's a lot of suspense you
- 4:22always go from one set piece to another carrot, sticks calls him
- 4:26like a page-turner. Yeah, which is ironic really
- 4:30because then Terror sticks writes, all the target novels of
- 4:32his books and tons and tons of it to page-turners.
- 4:36That's it's, they say that Dan Brown thing.
- 4:38Like you, you couldn't say that a Dan Brown book was particular,
- 4:41well, written. But they are page-turners
- 4:45because there's so Cliffhangers at the end of a lot of very
- 4:49short chapters. And you do keep reading this
- 4:52fight, your cell phone, Well, Mark, we've got more of the site
- 4:56of an episode for. I'm afraid, I don't think this
- 4:58thing is going to end in a particularly compelling fashion.
- 5:00So I have prepared some questions for you as we go
- 5:03through this, not final episode. Are you ready?
- 5:06Perfect! Let's go 3 2. 1 off we go.
- 5:13So you'll start off at n. Is this is, I stood in the last
- 5:17episode that Bulow was potentially going to be a doctor
- 5:21who companion. Who is your Ultimate could have
- 5:25been a companion who okay? My mind immediately went to
- 5:35dogon but that's such an obvious answer, isn't it?
- 5:37That's that's probably the one that a lot of people would say
- 5:41oh did I read in life and season 18 knowing when they go around
- 5:46punching Pango? You would you think something a
- 5:51bit a bit less obvious. Because this there's all the
- 5:55obvious ones is entirely that you know, just the girl from The
- 5:58Faceless ones from the name Sam. Rick's yeah.
- 6:05I knew he would be an unusual one.
- 6:07That would that would liven, things up Professor?
- 6:11Elia Romford. Yes.
- 6:14Yeah, she would have been brilliant and I think, I think
- 6:18Tom Baker would have reduced bonded.
- 6:20Well, to that as well. It's like the missus Whimsy in
- 6:24the MLS coach Chronicles isn't that he really responds to that
- 6:29kind of character? Well, since Susan Jameson.
- 6:32Yeah, she is. Was in a spectral and you more
- 6:35as well. Basically playing the same
- 6:37character. Mad eccentric, Joe else would
- 6:40have been good. What I have up.
- 6:41Vanessa art magic, not Vanessa knocking around the universe
- 6:45together, maybe pieces houses. Every wouldn't I?
- 6:48Yeah, if it was Tegan that got shrunk, and Vanessa had wandered
- 6:52into the Tardis and step that would be a good kind of reversal
- 6:56expectations with met the like, the young pretty woman is killed
- 7:00and then around to comes along here.
- 7:07He then your name is not pay. Is it it's Mom?
- 7:10Yes, I should know that name. Well, have you ever played
- 7:16Hopscotch in your life? I haven't.
- 7:19I haven't heard of you now. This is put me off.
- 7:21This is it's very at risk. I did you ever meet Jon Pertwee
- 7:28know? I've had a few people on here
- 7:30that I've had no one of them was told me a pleasant story.
- 7:33Oh, really? I I met him and I thought he was
- 7:36great, but I mean I just met him at convention and I was only
- 7:40like 13 or so already been. It was two months before he
- 7:44died. So we don't in 96, I've been
- 7:48about 50 40 50 maybe. But yeah, I thought it was
- 7:51terrific use, just like a star quality sort of thing you just
- 7:55saw. Judges in life, he was on stage,
- 7:58you know, had the, the audience, you know, the time of his hands
- 8:01Jelly's well-polished anecdotes. Yeah.
- 8:04I was totally just like, wow, that is jumps.
- 8:06It was sticks there as well because I can't imagine to
- 8:08Greater Raconteurs on stage. Was he was on stage Colin Baker,
- 8:14actually, the they put the two doctors on stage who interviewed
- 8:18each other but Elizabeth sladen, was that as well.
- 8:22So it's pretty pretty amazing convention.
- 8:25Yes. Terrific.
- 8:26Barry. Let's as you know about John po
- 8:30egos, you know, John poet. He tells these stories because
- 8:35it's 50%. Truth, 50% fiction.
- 8:38And every time he tells them they become more about Jon
- 8:41Pertwee than actually have you as long as he tells it.
- 8:46Well, I've heard him say say that the, you know, so he's told
- 8:50this story soft and they started to believe them and I think You
- 8:56know. Yeah.
- 8:58That doesn't it just to go back to episode the lightning as the
- 9:01Daleks go across the floor. Looks really, really good.
- 9:06It looks better than it does in the five doctors when they do
- 9:08the similar sort of thing, I think.
- 9:09Yeah, a grand. You know, I think the, the shots
- 9:13on the floor as well. Look very good vanish too.
- 9:18But if you read fairy, let's autobiography and Memoir the
- 9:22yeah, so good. I've heard he had the audio
- 9:25version of it but yeah, yes, to the demons thin it.
- 9:28I think so. Yeah.
- 9:29Yeah. Expect another volume actually.
- 9:31Yeah. But that does a story that he
- 9:33tells, and it's like he even all those years later, you wants to
- 9:36set the record straight that Jon pertwee's tells the story that
- 9:41when they went out on the hovercraft, that probably could
- 9:44control it and bolex couldn't and any sort of like that.
- 9:48It happened at all like it's fine.
- 9:49If I can be tells the story that they were all having lunch and
- 9:53that he was like just right around the city can get.
- 9:57Oh yeah. Also I don't have it on this
- 10:00side. It's a one of the countries that
- 10:02part we went in and demanded extra money and then when he
- 10:07said no, he quit and buried it says that's complete nonsense.
- 10:11Like yeah, would have come and spoken to me and that
- 10:13conversation never happens. But you know who cares?
- 10:19Yeah, that's it for, I'm going to hit you with another.
- 10:23One of these questions I was going around and asking them.
- 10:26What is your presiding memory of watching this story?
- 10:28As a child, I think is the Daleks.
- 10:32It was the first time I'd ever seen the Daleks.
- 10:35And so yeah, it was having read. Probably a lot of the target
- 10:40novels by this stage, actually seeing them and hearing them for
- 10:44the first time. I think that's Yeah.
- 10:47That's, that's my overriding memory of it about you.
- 10:52I think it was probably the atmosphere, but I was really
- 10:54scared watching this like this and Terror of the zygons really,
- 10:58frightened me. Yeah.
- 11:00And they're both quite dark shadowy blood.
- 11:04I think I was a bit of a Wimpy, Kid him on his finger.
- 11:07I was, but I was scared of the dark, so yeah, and if you're
- 11:10definitely episode 1, I remember yeah, finally quite scary and
- 11:14you don't think we need kids where you try and get people.
- 11:16People to watch stuff as well. You like all this is great and
- 11:19I'll transfer it to my friends and cousins and stuff.
- 11:22I like my younger cousins were just like this is too scary.
- 11:24Like knock it off, sort of thing and everyone else is just like
- 11:26not interested, not interested, never convert.
- 11:31You would have got to the bit where it's like this fella
- 11:41sitting there watching them on the screen.
- 11:43The, this is, this is Terry Walsh.
- 11:48He looks terrible. I'm telling you they hired an
- 11:52extra to do this and the extra couldn't keep still enough.
- 11:57So they sacked him and put Terry Walsh in the costume and, and
- 12:01gotten to sit there, just sit there.
- 12:03Very still, it's quite menacing, isn't it?
- 12:06But there's like a element of, like, the Daleks.
- 12:12They're being watched on cameras.
- 12:14Yeah. It's all builds up to something
- 12:17that doesn't happen. Doesn't as well.
- 12:18You think this is going to be the the overlord of everything
- 12:21that's going to be a confrontation.
- 12:23Yeah. Although the effect I really
- 12:24liked what he saw crumples away tonight.
- 12:26Yeah. Because for she saw think it's a
- 12:29bit like the master of the land of fiction who wants somebody to
- 12:33replace him. That all these intelligence
- 12:35tests would appear to be only letting somebody of a certain
- 12:40ability, get to the get to this control room order, the city in
- 12:45order to say, I will now you are the mind that's going to control
- 12:48it, but it doesn't go there where you'd expect it to.
- 12:51And you know, you might say that the ending is a little bit too
- 12:53easy that the doctor just kind of like pull some circuits out,
- 12:56gets his screwdriver and puts it in again and it is then you have
- 13:00those great seems that the antibodies coming out there
- 13:03being a shit out of the Daleks that's one of the guns literally
- 13:06just like tears in off. Yeah, it's really well done and
- 13:10yet you don't really get a good look at them as well.
- 13:13It makes them scary as they're forming and then you see them
- 13:16walk off your really see what they look like, what they are.
- 13:19Well you see the face and it's it's a bit like even that guy
- 13:23whose face melts off in Resurrection of the Daleks, it's
- 13:27kind of nasty and they do that wonderful thing where they're
- 13:32firing their guns and you actually see the bullets explode
- 13:35from their chairs. I always loved that.
- 13:38Dad's squibs going off over there and it's awfully wet my
- 13:42bed as a kid watching this on time.
- 13:44Yeah, this explained to see but I wonder if they're sort of not
- 13:48fully formed because of the urgency like the city doesn't
- 13:52have time to to fully put them together.
- 13:56It would. Yeah, it kind of suggests
- 13:58something like that one there. Okay, so my next question for
- 14:01you is this is how do you think this would have been different
- 14:06if Terrance dicks? He had script edited this.
- 14:13Hey Script Episode wants to repeal it or which comes next
- 14:16and it's quite different in tone to this.
- 14:19Yeah, I suppose I suppose like you said it feels like the
- 14:23darker elements come from Robert Holmes.
- 14:26So the the dying commanders. Wishes that bit where he's
- 14:32covered in blood he's dying. He's trying to solve in part
- 14:34his, he's dying orders and the way that Galloway took closed
- 14:38his eyes and holds his hand there.
- 14:40And says to him. Sorry I didn't hear that.
- 14:43That's that slight slightly mean a bit that you get later on.
- 14:48Isn't it in the in the early Tom Baker stuff from it from a far
- 14:53more like optimistic. These more about clean plotting,
- 15:02and a sort of the interests of the story and Robert Holmes is a
- 15:07bit more brutal and yeah. Yeah, it maybe the maybe the
- 15:13that sort of the ending would be a bit more.
- 15:17I suppose totally consistent with the rest of the story, if
- 15:20you don't fix. It's yeah, it's interesting to
- 15:25speculate, isn't it? Well while we're on the subject
- 15:28of speculation? Here's another one for you, it's
- 15:31like Mastermind. Listen, it Doctor Who Mastermind
- 15:35do you think that the new series would play about with the ideas
- 15:38of dialects without weapons and the living City?
- 15:41And how would it play out differently from this?
- 15:44I knew I think, I think if they if you're doing dialect without
- 15:48weapons, that would be as the same before, the Daleks being
- 15:52forced to work with the humans and finding clever ways to get
- 15:58what they want. It would all be about
- 16:00manipulation, wouldn't it? It would be about turning the
- 16:02humans against each other or getting them to do something.
- 16:05They didn't want to do, but tricking them.
- 16:08I think that would be the focus of the episode.
- 16:10It would be more more about the characters psychologically
- 16:13proven, Rather than yeah, knock they seemed terrified me as a
- 16:18kid. I could not figure out my little
- 16:21head. I couldn't figure out what on
- 16:22Earth was going on with these hip no lights.
- 16:26Yeah, it's really yeah, it's quite overwhelming, isn't it?
- 16:30Okay. And also if you've got episodes
- 16:33that you're in a lot of trouble. Yeah, it's it's painful to look
- 16:38at really, isn't it? So kind of really uncomfortable
- 16:40to see not just the doctor in pain but the the brightness and
- 16:46the Yeah, site. I never liked adults, like
- 16:53afraid and his terrorist and all of this like you do not exist.
- 16:58I think. What is going on?
- 17:00What are they get like? Yeah, I was I was hugging onto
- 17:04my mother's knee. That's where I sat and watched
- 17:05Doctor Who on the floor by my mum's Lakes.
- 17:09He looks genuinely terrible afterwards as well.
- 17:11But we there, when it was hands come down from his face, he
- 17:14looks really like you've been through an ordeal with me.
- 17:17What is a funny thing because I think Pertwee in 11 and Baker in
- 17:2218 both look visibly aged mmm in their final seasons.
- 17:29Yeah. Where is in 10 and 17?
- 17:34They both still look quite young and fresh and it's, it's old.
- 17:41Yeah, the the difference in pertwee's five years as well.
- 17:44It's quite marked isn't it? It's like he's 50.
- 17:48It's like he's aged from 50 to 55 but it feels like he's aged
- 17:52more awesome. Like, I feel like, you know what
- 17:55questions? I've written out.
- 17:56You just give me a perfect segue into my final question for
- 17:59tonight and that is we just talked about the five top Jon
- 18:03Pertwee Seasons. What are you favorite and why as
- 18:07an overall season? And I'll be very interested if
- 18:11you say 11 because I might yeah I don't know if I've got a
- 18:15favorite season. I think I think more so than any
- 18:20other doctor. There's there's a consistency
- 18:22across them the sitter sixes and sevens quite different, isn't
- 18:26it? But But once you get into season
- 18:298 and because you got the same behind the scenes, people you've
- 18:34got the regular stable of writers that they keep drawing
- 18:37on. I don't know.
- 18:39I've got I've got Favorite stories out of each of them,
- 18:42really? I don't need having any of them.
- 18:45Stand out more than any others are.
- 18:48You could put together my perfect season, probably taking
- 18:51a story from each one, go for it.
- 18:56Yeah, that's to be spearhead, okay?
- 19:01No Inferno. That's interesting.
- 19:05I love Inferno as well, but but yes, beer just edges it for me,
- 19:09I think. Okay.
- 19:12Then what? Don't want the autumns again.
- 19:16Maybe - okay, so spare for spice.
- 19:22Mind of evil. Yeah.
- 19:27What's in? This is why I can't quite
- 19:30remember what's in here. You can see Devils mutants time,
- 19:34All-Star. Man see Devils.
- 19:42Okay ya lo see those three doctors kind of full of monsters
- 19:46Planet. The dark Death to the Daleks.
- 19:54I don't. Hang on, hang on.
- 19:56We didn't get to greendeath, did we?
- 19:58And hey, yeah. So you get far enough because as
- 20:01soon as you said, three doctors is green, death would have to be
- 20:06in there. I think that 7 is the most
- 20:10accomplished year in terms of like the Productions but it's
- 20:13just too cold. I think he's very good at what
- 20:16he's doing, but it's a bit. Yeah, cool for me whereas 10, I
- 20:22just adore 10. I think it's color.
- 20:24Want to imagine. It's have an exciting.
- 20:27I love story. I think the Pertwee Manning
- 20:30chemistry is. All right, it's got amazing.
- 20:34Villains, it's just got everything I love about dogs.
- 20:37Yeah. That'd be my wife.
- 20:40What is this? All about?
- 20:41What this Dalek having a nervous breakdown.
- 20:45Yeah, it's it doesn't help to. It doesn't open to make them a
- 20:50credible threat to say what I feel like at the end, you know,
- 20:53when he's going like, it's supposed to blow off.
- 20:57Yeah, I forgot today. It's and, and I really it's
- 21:02crazy, but I really like the scene in remembrance where the
- 21:06doctor just such talks, the Dalek into having a similar,
- 21:09kind of breakdown, but the script in there is.
- 21:14Yeah. But here we just seem like a
- 21:16huge overreaction. What's happened?
- 21:20Don't you have a party? You know?
- 21:22Yeah. You know what I noticed a moment
- 21:27ago, Arnold yarrow when he was walking around is like, you
- 21:30know, have a look around and that, and he was holding himself
- 21:33in a very like wildfire off. But I don't know, he's always
- 21:38acting like he's always doing something as knee.
- 21:43Whereas, Jill, Taryn is too loose like somebody standing
- 21:48there waiting for an X line, not to pick on her but She's not
- 21:54very naturalistic issue. Whereas yeah, he's always doing
- 21:58something. Look at the look.
- 22:00You see their faces. Yeah, they Grill.
- 22:03It almost like the humor force a little bit as well.
- 22:05I do with this puckering. I just love the way.
- 22:09Yeah, they're one of them. They should just start smacking
- 22:11his head life size baby, just rips the arm right out.
- 22:18I suppose he's doing surprising things till the end man.
- 22:20All unusual things. Just come from nowhere.
- 22:26Haven't they there? And there are different size and
- 22:30build like they've gone for sort of tall skinny people.
- 22:32Whereas for the Excellence, they've gone for the smaller
- 22:35people. And I remember as a kid thinking
- 22:39yeah with the doors coming down at.
- 22:41I remember you can they're not going to get out and I was like
- 22:43really it's just yeah but they weren't going to escape the CC 0
- 22:49and and you know the bit right at the end with the screaming
- 22:52and all the walls melting and that.
- 22:54Yeah like in my head I remember that being really epic when I
- 23:00watch it now. Thanks Mark.
- 23:04It does, doesn't it? It's still?
- 23:06It's quite unsettling. Still though.
- 23:08I think you do get the sense of an organism dying.
- 23:14Not just the city crumbling because of the weird, the weird
- 23:17sounds. Yeah, it's like it is like
- 23:20something dying, isn't it? And what is the most bastard?
- 23:24Move, the Daleks could possibly make.
- 23:25Well, we're taking all the perineum.
- 23:27We're going to bomb the planet. See ya.
- 23:35It's a weird one that you've got them at their mercy and it's
- 23:39like no will take off and then launch a missile that you don't
- 23:42even say, oh, we don't need to bother because we're going to
- 23:44bump on it. Yeah.
- 23:47Okay. Also they want to make the
- 23:49planet when usable as well, don't they saw that.
- 23:52Nobody else can come and get any more perineum.
- 23:56It's a shame. You know, I think here.
- 24:00And those things towards inner thought, this is over there now
- 24:03and it does Studio is still not a terrible design but like you
- 24:08remember those scenes in episode 1?
- 24:10Yeah. If the planet at always been
- 24:13dark and Misty and weirdly lit throughout that, yeah, that
- 24:17would've been terrific. All these were the scenes, these
- 24:20were the scenes in their special features are Pertwee was losing
- 24:23its frag. Yeah.
- 24:25Yeah. He's having to retake it and
- 24:28yeah, What's My Line? I'll sorry.
- 24:30What? Yeah, he's stroppy.
- 24:34Well, it does. Yeah, the nice bits in the
- 24:39making of where the arrow talks about the limited visibility in
- 24:44his costume. So Pertwee helped him in vase
- 24:47and then once you know that you spot where he's got his hand on
- 24:49his shoulder or he sort of seems to be guiding a little bit.
- 24:54It's really, really interesting listening to the guest
- 24:56characters that come onto the common trees because Barry lets,
- 25:02you know, speaks very highly of how Jon Pertwee sort of pulled
- 25:05together a company made everybody feel at home, but you
- 25:08get the odds actor. So, Jill, Taran, has some things
- 25:13to say in this commentary and the person who plays Major
- 25:17dailies daughter in Carnival of monsters, they both say he was
- 25:21definitely the star of the show and He wanted everyone else.
- 25:24You know, I think he did have a bit of an ego but yeah, we hear
- 25:29about when Delgado came aboard and delgado's more prominent in
- 25:33the photo on the radio time. He didn't like that.
- 25:37He was he didn't like the Apache trunk coming back.
- 25:40He was worried. They didn't get that many scenes
- 25:42together because you didn't wanna be upstaged and yeah you
- 25:45feel like That was that was stumps definitely an element of
- 25:51his his ego. Whatever, his personality.
- 25:55He's been an unfair question. Do you think he's phoning it in
- 25:58in his last couple of stories? I don't I don't see that.
- 26:03No. As you think it is his best
- 26:06performance in part of the spiders, some of those scenes
- 26:08and there's great stuff and I think the moment she has with
- 26:13Sarah Jane, they like a few more words in here.
- 26:15I think he ever, really, really good.
- 26:16He's really, you know, responding to her being such a
- 26:20good actor out. It's, you know, so really
- 26:22bringing that bringing that out in him.
- 26:24Yeah. I think I kind of would like to
- 26:26love a year with the two of us. I think, or if she hadn't come
- 26:30along when he was aware, like when he 0 was kind of at its
- 26:33peak, you know, Yeah, it's something isn't it?
- 26:37It's like so bringing three, your billing in series 10.
- 26:40Yeah. And down in into flux, isn't it?
- 26:46It's like getting a really interesting or really likeable
- 26:49character into a doctor's final series.
- 26:52I'm glad corner to that list as well.
- 26:55Yeah, yeah. Absolutely.
- 26:57In fact it seems one season companions in the new series.
- 26:59I love the most. Yeah.
- 27:04That is not going to Clara Navy. All right, let's go.
- 27:08What's going to say the eleventh doctor Cloud as well.
- 27:11On you got like half a series together, so you know, it would
- 27:14have been interesting to get more of them as well.
- 27:16Maybe, but I know that not everybody likes Clara the way
- 27:20that I did but the fact that you do is marvelous Ty wall that
- 27:26would I will tell me I'm wrong. Now, they all come with me.
- 27:29Tell me. I'm wrong.
- 27:29You started. All right.
- 27:33There's the the Dalek buttons are something really sort of
- 27:36like button Moon. Isn't there about them?
- 27:38Oh my God button yes, wasn't it? Yeah, that tin can explode in
- 27:51there like that. That's an incredible special
- 27:53effects. But they do feel sorry for go
- 27:58away, though. That's There's no way that Terry
- 28:03Nation scripted, the last line that now the universe is
- 28:07downtown 799 lat. Was it 699?
- 28:13Yeah. 666 little AMA. Yeah.
- 28:16Yeah. When I was a kid, this was the
- 28:20most epic thing I'd ever seen. Yeah, pretty.
- 28:24And now you can see its melting pot of polystyrene but I would
- 28:29never have thought that. I was a kid.
- 28:30They gave a bit. That's right.
- 28:33Where you can see like the dripping.
- 28:36I'm joking. I think I genuinely felt like
- 28:38that. Building was bleeding.
- 28:39You know. Yeah.
- 28:41It's like it's not. So this is ashamed of grow up.
- 28:47Yeah I think that about survival.
- 28:49I can watch that when I was eight and just Like, did not
- 28:54spot that the killings were animatronic anything like that
- 28:57years later. You know, when I watched it on
- 28:59VHS as like that is such as look, anything like a real cat.
- 29:03It's but yeah, you just as a kid, use much more accepting of
- 29:08what's presented to you and you told it is.
- 29:11Yeah I do. There are there are some stories
- 29:13like as an adult the kind of live up to the Productions that
- 29:17Lesson by Warriors, gay terracycle.
- 29:20This is a good one. I want to scare us an actual
- 29:23Yeah. I was convinced that was a real
- 29:24monster. Yeah, as a kid just going to
- 29:28show all my got. It ended when did it end?
- 29:31The third? Okay, well I'm gonna hit you
- 29:35with this. The usual question between us.
- 29:38We need to find six reasons to recommend death to the Daleks.
- 29:42To all of those naysayers out, there will do one each back and
- 29:47forth off you go. Well, darling, submachine guns.
- 29:52It's brilliant. It looks it they look great and
- 29:55it's a great you know the doctor sets it up, he says the
- 29:57brilliant engineers and yeah, very shortly afterwards.
- 30:01You see that they've designed these guns?
- 30:03So yeah, that's really cool. I'm going to say the Jon Pertwee
- 30:08an Elizabeth sladen chemistry, which I think is a is at its
- 30:12peak. I have that.
- 30:13It's not the best use of our in this story, but the two of them
- 30:15together It might be some of the best moments.
- 30:20Yeah, and given how little they are together.
- 30:22In this story, those moments really shine.
- 30:25I see Arnold yarrow is Bilal, he gives a very, very compelling
- 30:30performance. He goes from what you think is
- 30:33going to be a monster that he's creeping around us to.
- 30:35So Jane just see its hands to really, really endearing
- 30:38character, who ya Ali would have been very interesting and
- 30:43likeable companion, people will think I'm mad, but I'm going to
- 30:47say the score. Which is very quirky, very alien
- 30:53at time, this is like a lot of islands and shrieking and stuff
- 30:57like that. And I think at the time with all
- 30:59the special, the sound effects, and the music I was really sort
- 31:03of transported to this weird place when I was a kid.
- 31:08So yeah, maybe I can see now that tonally in places, it's a
- 31:12bit jarring. It's just there, the style just
- 31:16say it. So I I'm not going to fight it
- 31:19and Some thought went into that as well.
- 31:21I think that they didn't want to use synthesizers because the
- 31:27whole setup is that there's no power, there's no electricity on
- 31:30this planet. So they wanted to use acoustic
- 31:33stuff instead of a synthesizer. And I think Carrie blatant as
- 31:38well, didn't really like synthesized and stuff because
- 31:40you felt like it was putting musicians out of work.
- 31:43So he brought this sort of quartet of musicians in and
- 31:47scored it as well. So that it's nice that there is
- 31:49You actually thought behind that it wasn't just, let's let's
- 31:54begin this. Gabby in there.
- 31:55Nobody likes uses that scrapie thing.
- 31:57That's neat that we had at school that thing.
- 32:02You know what? That's called, I don't.
- 32:04But yeah, I do remember the school.
- 32:06Now, that you mention it, we won't create his back.
- 32:09Harry blight and I'm telling you, we've been shoved into a
- 32:13mental institution. Okay.
- 32:15Your last one. The last one is kind of tearing
- 32:18one as far as going to Say the location.
- 32:20It's not it's not unique to this story to use a quarry, but I say
- 32:25that their location in conjunction with the direction.
- 32:30Really looks like an alien planet.
- 32:32Those those long tracking shots and Vistas with all the sort of
- 32:36dunes and the pools and then as it's moving, you realize that
- 32:40what you think is a rock is an excellent.
- 32:43Just when you clock flaps a little bit and things like that
- 32:45I think yes. I mean the direction but the use
- 32:47of the the location by Mike Lee Brian as well.
- 32:52And my last one is going to be the, like, memorable imagery
- 32:57that hits for out the story. Salons blending into the Sarah,
- 33:03Jane coming out of the Mist, the POV shot in the Tardis of her
- 33:08being attacked, the root coming up and look in the Dalek into
- 33:15the water. Like I think even the right down
- 33:18to the antibodies at the end. I just think there's no Very
- 33:22unusual. Very striking imagery in this
- 33:24there and the Dalek being on fire.
- 33:26The Dalek and the Exelon being on fire.
- 33:29Like, that's pretty scary. I think if your kid is well,
- 33:31like being on fire is is a pretty terrifying thought.
- 33:36Actually I'm just going to throw in the brutality as well, you
- 33:38know? So I think if you take out so it
- 33:40wouldn't feel was kind of a suppressive and as dangerous as
- 33:43it does. Yeah.
- 33:45If it was all paid a bit more sort of Planet of the Daleks
- 33:50Yeah, well, that just leaves me to say a massive.
- 33:54Thank you for taking this trip down memory lane with me.
- 33:59Thank you, thank you. It's been a pleasure.
- 34:01It's a great story and may I just say how much I admire your
- 34:05restraint about the, the word perineum being in the story so
- 34:11much that you become anime. Alright, making me be rude.
- 34:17Okay. I generally control myself when
- 34:20I'm around you. You know, I've got all these gay
- 34:23guys coming on and I'm Tara. But yeah, when is your Fraser
- 34:27Gregory? I'll tend to behave.
- 34:28Myself it's much appreciated. Then this.
- 34:33I Am tournament determined to hear another, take on the
- 34:38Steven, Moffat ERA, with you Seasons.
- 34:43Where there is a huge gap. It would be my podcast.
- 34:48So, I would like you right now to choose a Matt Smith and a
- 34:52Peter Capaldi episode that you'd like to talk about in the
- 34:54future. Yeah, definitely.
- 34:57Yeah, which is, there any particular ones that nobody's
- 35:01choosing are any most of us? Still free.
- 35:04I'll just say, yay, or nay if they're already taken Let me
- 35:09think. You know, it's a chance I think
- 35:15of a single story that's a great podcast, innocent Minds, go
- 35:22completely blank. What the season six has barely
- 35:27been touched series six. You know the Sylar, the doctor's
- 35:31wife has not been taken. Let's do it.
- 35:34Okay, and Capaldi, doctor's wife and Flatline been done.
- 35:40Yes. Mummy on the Orient Express.
- 35:43Yes. Yeah, there's a popular ones
- 35:45appearing. Like, I need to, I need to.
- 35:48I was taking in the forests of the night, you know, base.
- 35:54Probably my least favorite one. What else.
- 36:01What about yeah, I know you've done.
- 36:03You've done that in heaven. Haven't you?
- 36:05You know what I'd love to talk about if you put up for it into
- 36:09the Dalek. Yeah, yeah.
- 36:12Living to the Dale. Yeah.
- 36:14And you know why? Because I really didn't like it.
- 36:16When it first came out and every single time I watch that I've
- 36:19liked him. I now love it.
- 36:22Great. Yeah.
- 36:23And that's that's the second one, isn't it?
- 36:25Yeah, because we did. So we did deep breath we we can
- 36:28continue with with interdolly. That's great.
- 36:31So, So painful and I couldn't think of anything your favorite
- 36:35era as well. Shame on them.
- 36:39Okay I've double whammy the doctor's wife and inside the
- 36:42Dalek definitely. Wow.
- 36:46Until then we'll see you then.
