Latest / Vigilante Vibes Podcast / Ep. 182. Who is Wonder Man?
Transcript
- 0:11Hi guys, it's Megan from Vigilante Vibes, and with the
- 0:13excitement of the Wonder Man series coming at the end of
- 0:16January, I think it's time we talk about him.
- 0:19I saw many people ask about him, curious about who he was in the
- 0:22comics. Well fellow Marvel fans, I got
- 0:25you covered here. This might be my most in depth
- 0:28one I've done, so here's hoping it's not too long.
- 0:31Who knows? So Simon Williams AKA Wonder
- 0:34Man, first appeared in Avengers #9 in 1964.
- 0:38Simon Williams was the younger of two sons born to Sanford
- 0:41Williams, an industrialist who founded a hugely successful
- 0:45ammunitions company called Williams Innovations.
- 0:49Sanford was a strict, no nonsense kind of father with a
- 0:52sky high expectations for his kids, and his harsh discipline
- 0:57often crossed the line into abuse.
- 1:00That behavior carried down to Simon's older brother Eric, who
- 1:03started taking out his frustrations on Simon.
- 1:06When Eric turned down his father's offer to work in the
- 1:09family business, Simon, the quieter, more book loving one,
- 1:14stepped up instead. So when Stanford died, Simon
- 1:17ended up inheriting full control of Williams innovation at just
- 1:2020 years old. Unfortunately, Simon wasn't
- 1:23exactly ready for the responsibility, and under his
- 1:27leadership the company started losing ground to fast rising
- 1:31competitors like Stark Industries.
- 1:33Maybe you've heard of him? Well, them, the company and
- 1:36Stark. Desperate to save his father's
- 1:40legacy, Simon turned to Eric for help.
- 1:42Eric suggested something pretty reckless, embezzling money from
- 1:46the company to invest in some shady but profitable Maggie
- 1:50backed Ventures. Simon, under pressure and
- 1:55running out of options, actually did it.
- 1:57It didn't take long for the board of directors to uncover
- 2:00what he'd done, and Simon was put on trial for embezzlement
- 2:03and for his connection to organized crime.
- 2:06He was found guilty and facing prison when a more of the
- 2:09enchantress stepped in. Out of nowhere, she paid his
- 2:13bail and magically manipulated the authorities into letting him
- 2:16go. It turned out Baron Zemo had
- 2:19been following Simon's case in the papers and was intrigued by
- 2:22Simon's public resentment toward Tony Stark.
- 2:26Believing Stark was Iron Man's boss when in fact, you know
- 2:31Stark was Iron Man, Zemo sent the Enchanters to recruit Simon
- 2:35to join the Masters of Evil. Still reeling from everything
- 2:38that happened, Simon went with her to Zemo's base in South
- 2:42America, where he agreed to be a test subject for Zemo's new I
- 2:46ionic Gray process. After a grueling round of
- 2:51chemical and radiation treatments, Simon emerged with
- 2:54superhuman strength and durability.
- 2:57Zemo outfitted him in a costume, dubbed him Wonder Man, and told
- 3:01him he'd be key to defeating The Avengers.
- 3:05To keep Simon in line, Zemo lied and said the procedure had
- 3:09altered his metabolism. Without a special antidote, he'd
- 3:12die within a week. Terrified, Wonder Man agreed to
- 3:16play along in a staged fight with the Masters of Evil.
- 3:19He pretended to side with The Avengers and quickly earned
- 3:22their trust. When he confessed that he was
- 3:25dying, The Avengers did everything they could to cure
- 3:27him but could not find a solution.
- 3:30Eventually, Simon led the team into what turned out to be an
- 3:33ambush by the Masters of Evil, but partway through, he had a
- 3:36change of heart. He couldn't bring himself to
- 3:39betray The Avengers after how kind they've been to him.
- 3:43Giving up Zemo's antidote, Simon sacrificed himself, dying from
- 3:47the side effects of the ionic treatment.
- 3:50His last words were that he was glad his final act had been a
- 3:54noble one. The Avengers thought Simon was
- 3:58dead and brought his body back to the US for a burial, but in
- 4:01reality he'd fallen into a deep coma caused by unstable energy
- 4:05inside him. His brother Eric, now calling
- 4:08himself the Grim Reaper, stole Simon's body with plans to use
- 4:12it to manipulate the Vision, whose synthetic brain had been
- 4:16based on Simon's own mind patterns.
- 4:19Eric tried to convince the Vision to betray The Avengers by
- 4:23promising to transfer his mind into Simon's body, but when that
- 4:28failed, he even tried to offer him Captain America's body
- 4:31instead. Eric escaped with Simon's body
- 4:35and took it to New Orleans, hoping voodoo priests could
- 4:38bring his brother back. The cult leader Black Talon
- 4:42succeeded, but only in creating a mindless zombie version of
- 4:46Wonder Man Eric sent his reanimated Simon to attack the
- 4:51Vision, but the plan didn't work out and The Avengers followed
- 4:55the trail back to New Orleans. After exposure to the living
- 5:00lasers, powers and other energy surges, Simon gradually came out
- 5:05of a zombie like state, regaining consciousness and
- 5:08realizing he was fully alive again.
- 5:11His body had changed though. It was no longer made of normal
- 5:14human tissue, but of superhuman energy based substance fueled by
- 5:19ionic energy. Simon had a rough time adjusting
- 5:23to being alive again, and struggled with the trauma of his
- 5:27death. He stayed at Avengers Mansion
- 5:31for a while, helping the team out when he could, but he was
- 5:34often paralyzed by the fear of dying again.
- 5:37Eventually, during a major battle with the cosmic being
- 5:40Korvac, he overcame his fear long enough to reach his full
- 5:43potential as a hero. Even after that though, he
- 5:47occasionally struggled with panic and self doubt, which is
- 5:50pretty human. Overtime, Simon was officially
- 5:54reinstated as an Avenger, became close friends with the Beast.
- 5:58He even confronted the Magia again when he fought Madame Mask
- 6:02and the Dreadnought to reclaim his old factory.
- 6:05When the Grim Reaper found out Simon was alive, he returned to
- 6:09The Avengers Mansion and forced the team into a mock trial to
- 6:12prove that this Wonder man was really his brother.
- 6:17When Simon refused to let him kill the Vision, Eric went on a
- 6:20rampage and Simon had to fight him.
- 6:23The Avengers managed to subdue the Reaper and have him
- 6:26committed to a mental institution, but he eventually
- 6:30escaped and convinced once again that neither Simon nor the
- 6:33Vision was truly his brother. But it's actually really funny
- 6:37to think that the Grim Reaper is just in a mental institution.
- 6:42I don't. Maybe it's not funny to
- 6:43everyone. I think it's funny.
- 6:46Living at The Avengers Mansion, Simon decided he didn't want to
- 6:49mooch off the team financially. Not wanting to return to
- 6:52business, he tried acting, reasoning that he'd been acting
- 6:55like a hero for years anyways, which is fair.
- 6:59After working as a strong man on a children's show and a security
- 7:02consultant at Cord Co, neither of which lasted long, he moved
- 7:07to Los Angeles, where he found success as a stuntman,
- 7:10eventually as an actor. When Hawkeye formed the West
- 7:14Coast Avengers, Simon joined him.
- 7:16Despite some doubts about measuring up to the rest, he
- 7:20proved himself time and time again, defeating powerful foes
- 7:23like Gravidon, Ultron, even his brother, the Grim Reaper, who is
- 7:29a problem. Clearly feeling stronger and
- 7:33more confident, Simon publicly admitted his past embezzlement,
- 7:36asking for forgiveness. The public respected his
- 7:40honesty, and for the first time, Simon truly felt free of his
- 7:43past. He also developed very
- 7:46complicated feelings for the Scarlet Witch, Wanda Maximoff,
- 7:50especially after the Vision, whose mind was based on his own,
- 7:53was dismantled and rebuilt without emotions.
- 7:57When Wanda asked Simon to help restore Visions mind by donating
- 8:02his brain patterns again, Simon refused, both out of guilt and
- 8:05because of his feelings for her. The situation strained things
- 8:09between them, though Simon later apologized.
- 8:13Simon eventually left the West Coast Avengers to focus on
- 8:16acting and his personal life. He dated A screenwriter named
- 8:20Alex Flores and continued navigating life in Hollywood.
- 8:25His life took an even darker turn when he became involved in
- 8:29Operation Galactic Storm, an intergalactic conflict between
- 8:33the Cree and the Shi'ar. During this war, Simon witnessed
- 8:37the detonation of the Mega Bomb, which wiped out nearly the
- 8:40entire Cree race. Even though he wasn't directly
- 8:44responsible, the event haunted him deeply and LED to ongoing
- 8:48psychological trauma. Later, while working with Force
- 8:52Works successor to the West Coast Avengers, Simon was killed
- 8:56by Cree warriors seeking revenge for the genocide.
- 9:00His body was destroyed in an ionic explosion that turned the
- 9:04Los Angeles skies pink. Eventually, Wanda used her chaos
- 9:08magic to resurrect him, and the two briefly became a couple.
- 9:13Their relationship ended amicably when they realized they
- 9:15were better off as friends. Feeling that he didn't deserve
- 9:20another chance at life, Simon created a nonprofit organization
- 9:23called The Second Chances, using his fame and fortune to help
- 9:26people rebuild their lives. When the Superhuman Registration
- 9:30Act was passed, Simon registered and became a SHIELD agent.
- 9:34Though he hated the politics of it, he joined the Mighty
- 9:37Avengers alongside Miss Marvel, whom he had a relationship with
- 9:41Iron Man and others. Together they fought threats
- 9:46like Ultron, Doctor Doom, the Hulk's War Bound, and the
- 9:49Scrolls during their invasion. I should also mention this was
- 9:53Carol Danvers Miss Marvel, not Kamala Khan Miss Marvel.
- 9:58Nothing weird going on here. After Norman Osborne took over
- 10:02national security, Simon became disillusioned with the heroism,
- 10:06publicly declaring that The Avengers had caused more harm
- 10:10than good. He was later arrested as a part
- 10:12of the group called the Lethal Legion.
- 10:14When Steve Rogers reassembled The Avengers after the siege
- 10:17event, Simon refused to rejoin, even attacking the team at one
- 10:21point. Tony Stark later revealed that
- 10:23Simon's body was unstable and leaking ionic energy, suggesting
- 10:27his erratic behavior wasn't entirely his fault.
- 10:30Simon eventually put together his own anti Avengers team, the
- 10:34Revengers, believing The Avengers needed to be stopped.
- 10:38After a series of battles, he was captured and imprisoned.
- 10:42He later redeemed himself by helping The Avengers rescue the
- 10:45Wasp and joined The Avengers Unity Squad, A-Team dedicated to
- 10:49uniting humans and mutants. During a mission against the
- 10:54Apocalypse Twins, Rogue accidentally absorbed Simon's
- 10:57essence and powers, keeping his consciousness inside her mind
- 11:00until she eventually released him.
- 11:03What can you do that Rogue? In later adventures, Wonder Man
- 11:08joined groups like The Avengers Emergency Response Squad,
- 11:12helping heroes like Photon, She Hulk, and Hercules during global
- 11:17crises. He maintained his pacifist
- 11:20ideals, but still stepped in when necessary like he, like
- 11:25when he drank a VAT of toxic serpent venom to neutralize it
- 11:28without harm. Unhinged things like that.
- 11:32Even in quieter moments, Simon stayed involved with the
- 11:35superhero community, working alongside friends like Beast and
- 11:38She Hulk and lending his strength when the world needed
- 11:41them. Through it all, Simon Williams,
- 11:43Wonder Man remained a complicated but ultimately
- 11:46hopeful figure. Someone who fell Rose again kept
- 11:49trying to live up to the name Avenger.
- 11:51So you have his back story, but what is his powers?
- 11:56Well, there's a laundry list of them, so hang tight while we
- 11:59discuss all of them. Ionic energy form Wonder Man's
- 12:03body isn't exactly human anymore.
- 12:05His tissues and bones were like supercharged and partly replaced
- 12:10during the ionic ray experiment that gave him his powers, which
- 12:13involved PIM particle charged ions.
- 12:16Even though he often says he's made of ionic energy, it's a bit
- 12:20unclear these days whether his outer form is actually made of
- 12:23energy or still has some kind of flesh like substance.
- 12:28At one point when everyone in New York got turned into
- 12:30symbiotes, Simon explained that he wasn't affected because he's
- 12:35basically a being of pure ions, not flesh and blood.
- 12:40Superhuman strength. This one is pretty
- 12:44self-explanatory. Wonder Man's strength is
- 12:47absolutely off the charts. He can lift well over 100 tons
- 12:50and no one's really sure what his upper limit is.
- 12:53He's been compared to powerhouses like Thor, the whole
- 12:56Hercules, even the century. Some people have called him one
- 13:00of the strongest human beings on Earth and even the most powerful
- 13:03member of The Avengers at different points.
- 13:05He's gone toe to toe with Thor multiple times and even knocked
- 13:09him down on occasion. Though to be fair, both Thor and
- 13:12Century usually hold back, but Spider Man once joked that Simon
- 13:17belongs to the same strength class as the Hulk, Thor, and
- 13:19Hercules, just a notch below them, but still way above Iron
- 13:23Man even at full power. So if Spider Man says that, I
- 13:27believe it. Superhuman leaping.
- 13:31Simon's leg strength lets him jump ridiculous distances, so
- 13:35there's that. Superhuman speed.
- 13:38He's very fast. Superhuman stamina.
- 13:41Thanks to his ionic Physiology, Simon doesn't tire out ever, so
- 13:48he just keeps going. He's the Energizer Bunny.
- 13:51Invulnerability. Simon's body is made of ionized
- 13:55organic matter instead of normal flesh.
- 13:58I've said the word flesh way too many times, which makes him
- 14:03incredibly tough. He can shrug off bullets,
- 14:06explosions, massive impacts and even atmospheric re entry
- 14:11without getting hurt. The next one, Superhuman agility
- 14:14and reflexes for a guy with so much muscle.
- 14:18Simon moves with the agility, balance and reflexes of a top
- 14:21level athlete. Enhanced senses.
- 14:25His senses senses are enhanced. Flight.
- 14:28He can fly. Power fluctuations.
- 14:32Simon's power and strength levels can fluctuate depending
- 14:35on his emotional state. When he's mentally off balance
- 14:38or under stress, his abilities can either spike higher than
- 14:42normal or weaken. Resurrection Empowerment.
- 14:45Every time Simon dies and comes back, his ionic energy
- 14:49restructures itself stronger than before.
- 14:53So each resurrection leaves him more powerful than the last,
- 14:57which is just bananas. Immortality because he just
- 15:02because he's powered entirely by ionic energy.
- 15:05He's not flesh and bones like the rest of us.
- 15:09He doesn't age or get sick. He just he's just vibing.
- 15:15Self resurrection. We've gone over this.
- 15:17He can even his body. If his body is completely
- 15:20destroyed or dispersed, he eventually reforms over time.
- 15:24Self sustenance. Simon doesn't need food, sleep,
- 15:28water, or even air, so he can just survive crazy regeneration.
- 15:36His ionic body can heal itself from basically anything.
- 15:39Gunshot wounds, torn off limbs, all that stuff.
- 15:44Energy manipulation. Before his death at the hands of
- 15:47the Cree, Simon learned to release bursts of raw ionic
- 15:50energy through his body with devastating force.
- 15:53He doesn't use the ability as often now, but it's it's still
- 15:56there. Energy constructs.
- 15:59Simon can shape his internal energy into solid, tangible
- 16:02forms, so he can make like force fields or energy bubbles, all
- 16:06that electromagnetic manipulation.
- 16:10Under training from the Wasp and the Beast, Simon learned that he
- 16:13can detect, absorb, and manipulate electromagnetic
- 16:16fields and other types of energy in the environment using his
- 16:20ionic energy as a conduit. There's there's more, I'm so
- 16:24sorry, I'll just go through them.
- 16:26Ionic blasts, ionic beams, flame projection, shape shifting, size
- 16:34alteration, power recycling, teleportation.
- 16:39So he is obviously super, super overpowered and personally, I
- 16:44don't think the MCU knows how to handle a super overpowered
- 16:48character. I mean, they handled Wiccan, but
- 16:52we didn't, we didn't get that full effect.
- 16:55We didn't have to see him take down the world like Franklin
- 16:58Richards. I'm very nervous for them to
- 17:00use. But Wonder Man is as overpowered
- 17:03as it comes and he's a cool character.
- 17:06I'm excited to see his series. So as usual, I have comics for
- 17:10you to check out to get to know Simon AKA Wonder Man even
- 17:14better. So he actually has his own
- 17:17solos. You can check out Wonder Man
- 17:19solo with volumes 1-2 and three. It's fun, it's good.
- 17:24Avengers volume 1 #150 to 200. He's in there a lot.
- 17:29Avengers volume 3 when he returns from the dead and stays
- 17:32on The Avengers team and most currently you can check him out
- 17:36in the Longshots comics and the X-Men Age of Revelation event
- 17:42going on currently he's in there with oh, I forgot her name oops,
- 17:50Jessica Jones sister. If someone can just help me out
- 17:52with that. I forgot her name completely,
- 17:55but yes. So that is wonder man.
- 17:57I hope you learned something be sure to like and subscribe So
- 18:00when the series comes out, you can watch me review the show and
- 18:04also I have all these character breakdowns right now.
- 18:07I'm going really heavy into the X-Men, but I'm going to start
- 18:10sprinkling and other ones in there because it's like there's
- 18:13just so many characters in the Marvel Universe that I feel are
- 18:15very underrated and need more attention.
- 18:18So with that being said, have a marvelous day.
