- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Not So Fast with Andrew Perloff and Paul Pabst,
- 0:05Speaker 1: where two longtime friends challenge each other on the biggest
- 0:08Speaker 1: sports stories.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Of the day.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Here's Andrew Perloff and Paul Pabst. Not so fast, my friends.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Welcome to Not So Fast. I'm Andrew Perloff. He is
- 0:20Speaker 2: Paul Paps. Paul, it is unseasonably warm for football weather.
- 0:25Speaker 3: It's not football weather this weekend. I looked at the
- 0:27Speaker 3: college football slate. USC's home game, 98 degrees. What happened
- 0:31Speaker 3: last time? Not a lot of people showed up. There's
- 0:33Speaker 3: only one top 25 football game under 70 degrees this weekend.
- 0:37Speaker 4: You won't get that coverage anywhere else.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Wow. All right. What do we got cooking today?
- 0:40Speaker 4: We got a lot cooking today.
- 0:41Speaker 3: Busy sports weekend, NFL, college playoffs, but big picture?
- 0:45Speaker 4: Dan Patrick joins us.
- 0:46Speaker 2: I can't wait. Okay. Last night, of course, we knew
- 0:50Speaker 2: we'd be coming in early on not so fast. But
- 0:52Speaker 2: the Cleveland Browns is a potential playoff team. Three and
- 0:55Speaker 2: one beat the Steelers. Paul, what's your first reaction to
- 0:58Speaker 2: what happened last night in Cleveland?
- 0:59Speaker 3: Well, I think I said on the Dan Patrick show earlier,
- 1:01Speaker 3: this is like a couple C students in a fight,
- 1:04Speaker 3: like a math contest. These are two nice teams. There's
- 1:07Speaker 3: nothing wrong with them. And there's not a lot right
- 1:09Speaker 3: with them. At the Cleveland Browns, they won. They could
- 1:11Speaker 3: have given it up in the second half. But it
- 1:13Speaker 3: just feels like a good game between two teams that
- 1:16Speaker 3: are in the middle of the road somewhere.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Well, you know what? If you're 9-8, are you a
- 1:20Speaker 2: good team? If you're 10-7, are you a good team?
- 1:22Speaker 2: Because both teams have a good chance of making the playoffs.
- 1:25Speaker 3: Yeah, they both have nice rosters. I thought in the
- 1:27Speaker 3: second half, you look there, Cleveland looks like they're in
- 1:29Speaker 3: good shape. But Cleveland has been outscored by 14 points
- 1:32Speaker 3: this season. They could be 0-4 instead of 3-1.
- 1:35Speaker 2: I'm going to counter your argument. I think Deshaun Watson
- 1:38Speaker 2: is getting more comfortable in that offense. I think the
- 1:40Speaker 2: young players are getting more comfortable. So, no, I'm not
- 1:42Speaker 2: talking about them as a 12-win team, but I think
- 1:45Speaker 2: you're going to see a much more competitive Cleveland team
- 1:47Speaker 2: than at least I expected.
- 1:49Speaker 4: Yeah, I agree with you.
- 1:50Speaker 3: Boston, the young wide receiver in Concepcion, they looked really
- 1:53Speaker 3: good in the first half. But then in the second half,
- 1:54Speaker 3: if you were up for the second half, Deshaun Watson
- 1:57Speaker 3: tried to give it back. He read the option wrong,
- 1:59Speaker 3: and T.J. Watt just decleted him, and he fumbles.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 2:02Speaker 3: He threw in a triple coverage late in the game
- 2:04Speaker 3: when that's the only thing they didn't need was an interception.
- 2:07Speaker 3: He also had a play where he could have closed
- 2:09Speaker 3: out the game to Harold Fannin, and he missed him.
- 2:12Speaker 3: He completely missed him on the left side, and that
- 2:14Speaker 3: would have basically closed out the game.
- 2:15Speaker 4: If you look at this play here, What is that about?
- 2:17Speaker 4: I know it was tipped, but my God.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Well, I mean, listen, it's the Cleveland Browns. Maybe my
- 2:21Speaker 2: bar is lower for you. Well, the Cleveland Browns are 3-1,
- 2:24Speaker 2: and you're throwing cold water on it. Did you see
- 2:26Speaker 2: the stadium last night? They were going crazy.
- 2:28Speaker 3: It's a feel-good story. It's a good, especially when you've
- 2:31Speaker 3: been starving for a long time. I think they're a
- 2:33Speaker 3: nice squad. I don't want to go too much further
- 2:35Speaker 3: than September with them.
- 2:36Speaker 2: A couple numbers I found interesting. Cleveland's won five straight
- 2:39Speaker 2: over the Steelers at home, but guess the last time
- 2:41Speaker 2: they beat the Steelers in Pittsburgh?
- 2:43Speaker 4: On a Thursday night?
- 2:44Speaker 2: I don't know. It was 2003. So there's something about
- 2:47Speaker 2: the Steelers coming to the Browns. It makes it a
- 2:50Speaker 2: rock fight every time. So it's not a shock that
- 2:52Speaker 2: Cleveland won that game. I think what you're saying is
- 2:54Speaker 2: it doesn't mean what some people said last night, that
- 2:57Speaker 2: this means Cleveland is back.
- 2:58Speaker 3: I think most people would still take the Bengals over
- 3:00Speaker 3: them and still take the Ravens over them. I think
- 3:02Speaker 3: you could feel good about the condition of the franchise.
- 3:04Speaker 3: You put up with the Deshaun Watson off the field stuff,
- 3:07Speaker 3: and now the on the field stuff, which there was
- 3:10Speaker 3: a point last year, he was like Kaiser Soze.
- 3:11Speaker 4: I didn't think we'd ever see the guy on the field.
- 3:14Speaker 3: And I think that, like you said, he's playing decent football,
- 3:17Speaker 3: B-level football, and that's enough. But more so, if you
- 3:20Speaker 3: look what their front office did, the Miles Garrett trade
- 3:22Speaker 3: versus fantastic. They've got good wide receivers. Running back Judkins
- 3:26Speaker 3: is a good running back. Fannin, the defense with Graham.
- 3:29Speaker 3: They have a nice roster. So whoever the quarterback is.
- 3:32Speaker 4: Now or going forward at least has a team around
- 3:34Speaker 4: him and isn't just running for his life.
- 3:35Speaker 2: Yeah, GM Andrew Barry's made some nice picks. Carson Schlesinger
- 3:38Speaker 2: in the second round was a great pick.
- 3:39Speaker 4: You nailed Schlesinger, by the way.
- 3:40Speaker 2: I know. Denzel Boston in the second round was obviously
- 3:43Speaker 2: a great pick. I will counter you a little more
- 3:45Speaker 2: on Deshaun Watson. When he runs, it opens up everything.
- 3:49Speaker 2: So the question is, can he run like he did
- 3:50Speaker 2: last night? He's kind of run all season without getting hurt.
- 3:53Speaker 2: The only reason he was Kaiser Soze is he was hurt.
- 3:55Speaker 1: All the time.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Right.
- 3:57Speaker 3: So now, again, I'm just trying to pump the brakes
- 3:59Speaker 3: a little bit on them. But again, this is a
- 4:01Speaker 3: fan base that's been dying for it. Let's go to
- 4:03Speaker 3: the other side of this, the Steelers. The Steelers could
- 4:05Speaker 3: have won that game. They had a really nice fourth quarter.
- 4:07Speaker 3: Aaron Rodgers got them back in play. They were in
- 4:10Speaker 3: two-point conversion land. And then it's just, you know, it's
- 4:13Speaker 3: not enough. You mentioned them.
- 4:14Speaker 4: Earlier before the show.
- 4:15Speaker 2: You said.
- 4:16Speaker 4: They're good, but they're good and old, and that's not
- 4:18Speaker 4: a good good.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Well, they're the same team that they've been since 2017,
- 4:21Speaker 2: since Ben Roethlisberger got old. They'll win some games they shouldn't,
- 4:25Speaker 2: and they'll lose some games they should not. You've got
- 4:27Speaker 2: to love that. Don't look. Yeah, I mean, listen, Aaron Rodgers,
- 4:30Speaker 2: last night he barely completed 50% of his passes, but
- 4:33Speaker 2: still had 300 yards. He makes a lot of good throws.
- 4:36Speaker 2: He's dropping back way too much. You've said this all
- 4:39Speaker 2: season long. Why isn't the offense built around Jalen Warren?
- 4:42Speaker 2: Why isn't Aaron Rodgers dropping back so many times?
- 4:45Speaker 3: Yeah, 40 passes, 299, three touchdowns, two picks. The last
- 4:48Speaker 3: pick doesn't really count because... It's that desperation.
- 4:51Speaker 2: But he got hit a couple times. Every time he
- 4:53Speaker 2: gets hit, you think there's going to be a fumble.
- 4:55Speaker 3: Jalen Warren is in his prime. He's not sharing the backfield.
- 4:58Speaker 3: I would give him 30 carries. I'm being facetious, but
- 5:01Speaker 3: they hand the ball very well with him. But Herbstreit
- 5:03Speaker 3: talked about this. The pass rush, and you see him
- 5:05Speaker 3: getting sacked there.
- 5:06Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 5:07Speaker 4: He's got to make it through this season, and old
- 5:09Speaker 4: and hurt is not a good mix.
- 5:10Speaker 2: I'll tell you one thing, though. He got hit this
- 5:12Speaker 2: many times last year and made it through. He's a
- 5:14Speaker 2: little bit like a rubber band. He seems to be
- 5:16Speaker 2: able to take these hits now. He's come back fully
- 5:19Speaker 2: from his Achilles. Yeah, when he gets hit, is there
- 5:21Speaker 2: anything ugly? It kind of looks like you or me
- 5:23Speaker 2: out on the field.
- 5:23Speaker 6: Oh, I know.
- 5:23Speaker 3: Anyone gray hair getting hit, you kind of feel bad
- 5:25Speaker 3: for them. He's got the sprinkle gray. But Herbstreet said
- 5:28Speaker 3: last night, he was talking about the receivers, there's no separations.
- 5:31Speaker 3: He was looking at the all-22 shot. He said, these
- 5:33Speaker 3: receivers are not open.
- 5:34Speaker 4: There's nowhere for.
- 5:35Speaker 5: Him to go.
- 5:36Speaker 2: Well, where does he go in that situation?
- 5:37Speaker 4: Washington, you're going.
- 5:38Speaker 5: Darnell Washington.
- 5:39Speaker 2: He doesn't have to be open. He's a mountain of
- 5:41Speaker 2: a man. DK Metcalf came back a little bit late.
- 5:43Speaker 2: That was, I think, a big part of him getting
- 5:45Speaker 2: back at it in the second half. There's reason for hope.
- 5:48Speaker 2: I'm telling you right now, you discount the Steelers at
- 5:50Speaker 2: your own peril. I don't care if Mike Tomlin is gone.
- 5:52Speaker 2: They could be 2-5. They will end up at 9-8
- 5:55Speaker 2: or 10-7.
- 5:56Speaker 4: You'd bet your life that they win a 7-plus game.
- 5:58Speaker 2: By the way, that's not a good thing. That's a very,
- 6:00Speaker 2: very bad thing for Steelers fans. They're so sick of limbo.
- 6:03Speaker 2: I think they would want to get rid of Aaron
- 6:05Speaker 2: Rodgers and start over a quarterback. Because you look at
- 6:07Speaker 2: that schedule, you know it's going to land somewhere around 500.
- 6:10Speaker 4: They could win their next four in a row based
- 6:12Speaker 4: off that schedule.
- 6:13Speaker 3: And you'd be like, they did it again. Because I
- 6:15Speaker 3: keep saying with the Steelers... When are they going to
- 6:17Speaker 3: try out another quarterback? And you were talking about it
- 6:20Speaker 3: before the show. They're not going to do that. I mean,
- 6:22Speaker 3: if you want it to be Drew Aller or Will Howard,
- 6:24Speaker 3: when do they do that? When they're not longer in
- 6:26Speaker 3: the playoff picture, but they're always technically in the playoff picture.
- 6:29Speaker 2: Well, that's the problem. They draft around 20, which will
- 6:31Speaker 2: get you a Kenny Pickett.
- 6:33Speaker 5: Right.
- 6:33Speaker 2: And it won't get you Sam Darnold. I'm trying to
- 6:36Speaker 2: think of a good top five pick. They need to
- 6:38Speaker 2: really tank. They need to rip off the Band-Aid. They're
- 6:40Speaker 2: going to have to start over quarterback Aaron Rodgers. They
- 6:43Speaker 2: were talking last night, there's no coming back. Rodgers was
- 6:45Speaker 2: talking about his plans for next year. He's done. So
- 6:48Speaker 2: I think if you're a Steelers fan, you really wonder
- 6:50Speaker 2: what's next.
- 6:51Speaker 3: Okay, to put a bow on this game, are either team,
- 6:53Speaker 3: can you picture them being a threatening team if they
- 6:55Speaker 3: made the playoffs, either team?
- 6:57Speaker 2: No, no, no, no. I think both teams have a
- 6:59Speaker 2: good chance to make the playoff, a real chance to
- 7:01Speaker 2: make the playoffs, but I don't see them as a
- 7:04Speaker 2: contender for the Super Bowl.
- 7:05Speaker 3: You did sway me a little bit about the young
- 7:07Speaker 3: guys with Deshaun Watson, and somehow if this keeps up,
- 7:10Speaker 3: like decent football in the playoff picture, In December, those
- 7:14Speaker 3: young guys become like sophomores.
- 7:15Speaker 4: They always talk about freshmen becoming sophomores.
- 7:17Speaker 3: I could see them being better than people expect because
- 7:20Speaker 3: they're going to have a dip at some point.
- 7:22Speaker 2: Oh, absolutely. You're being very nice, by the way. I
- 7:26Speaker 2: really appreciate this because we have not talked about the
- 7:29Speaker 2: baseball game on NBC last night yet.
- 7:31Speaker 4: Hey, you're a Phillies fan. You said they weren't going
- 7:32Speaker 4: to advance. You called your shot. They didn't advance. Phillies
- 7:35Speaker 4: are out.
- 7:36Speaker 3: Braves are in. Braves continue. The lucky Braves, 6-2 over
- 7:39Speaker 3: the Phillies. They get to face the Dodgers next out
- 7:42Speaker 3: in L.A.
- 7:42Speaker 2: Did the Phillies show up at all last night? Was
- 7:44Speaker 2: that a game at any point after the Harris home run?
- 7:47Speaker 2: It felt like it was over early. Yeah, they lost 2-6.
- 7:51Speaker 3: How do you feel about a team that fires their
- 7:53Speaker 3: manager but then makes the playoffs but then disappoints in
- 7:56Speaker 3: the playoffs?
- 7:56Speaker 4: Isn't that a good season?
- 7:58Speaker 2: Yeah, I saw a headline that they're going to gently
- 8:01Speaker 2: let Don Mattingly walk out of the building. That's a mistake. No,
- 8:04Speaker 2: they're not moving on with him. In fact, they're going
- 8:06Speaker 2: to rip up this entire lineup possibly. They have a
- 8:08Speaker 2: lot of old, overpaid stars. And I said it earlier
- 8:11Speaker 2: in the week. They have no chance. Their bullpen always
- 8:14Speaker 2: blows in the postseason. It's time to try a whole
- 8:16Speaker 2: new approach if you're the Phillies.
- 8:17Speaker 3: Let's look at the Braves side of this. Two years ago,
- 8:19Speaker 3: they were one of the favorites. Last year, a little injured.
- 8:22Speaker 3: This year, they're back.
- 8:23Speaker 4: They look good. They handled business at home.
- 8:25Speaker 3: Against the Dodgers, we never say no chance.
- 8:27Speaker 4: We don't do that here and not so fast. But
- 8:29Speaker 4: it feels like daunting.
- 8:31Speaker 2: Well, the Braves have really one pitcher, Chris Sale. And
- 8:34Speaker 2: you need a lot of pitching against the Dodgers. How
- 8:36Speaker 2: do you sail last night? That's a tough assignment. I
- 8:40Speaker 2: don't think anyone's going to upset the Dodgers, but the
- 8:43Speaker 2: one team in particular, because of the pitching staff, I
- 8:45Speaker 2: just don't see the Braves doing it.
- 8:47Speaker 3: Sale could probably go in Game 2, probably go in
- 8:49Speaker 3: Game 5, so they're going to see him twice.
- 8:50Speaker 4: You need a win there.
- 8:52Speaker 3: But I think the bigger picture is for the Dodgers,
- 8:54Speaker 3: they don't have to use Shohei Otani as a pitcher.
- 8:57Speaker 3: The Dodgers are plus 115. That's almost disrespectful to the Brewers,
- 9:01Speaker 3: by the way, plus 300.
- 9:03Speaker 2: Oh, why do you say that? The Dodgers still have
- 9:04Speaker 2: a deeper roster. The Dodgers have everything.
- 9:07Speaker 4: The Brewers outscored the Dodgers this year. They had a
- 9:09Speaker 4: bigger run differential.
- 9:10Speaker 2: Yeah, but the Dodgers were mailing in half the season.
- 9:12Speaker 4: So you're saying the plan is to pace yourself.
- 9:15Speaker 2: If you want to keep it friendly, I will take
- 9:16Speaker 2: the Dodgers all day long.
- 9:18Speaker 3: I'll take the Brewers straight up against the Dodgers this year.
- 9:20Speaker 3: I look at the Brewers this year as like the
- 9:23Speaker 3: Pistons when they're trying to get past the team or
- 9:25Speaker 3: the Bulls. I think this is the year that everything's
- 9:27Speaker 3: in place. They got a taste of it last year.
- 9:30Speaker 4: I look at them. Here's my comp for the Brewers.
- 9:32Speaker 3: The Seahawks last year. They outscored everybody and everyone still
- 9:35Speaker 3: loved the Rams. The Brewers outscored everybody.
- 9:37Speaker 4: Look at your face. You're just ready to go.
- 9:40Speaker 2: Why this Brewers team compared to the one two years ago,
- 9:42Speaker 2: three years ago, six years ago? They win that division
- 9:44Speaker 2: all the time.
- 9:45Speaker 3: I think that teams find a way to finally realize
- 9:48Speaker 3: this is it and they get that. Going back to
- 9:50Speaker 3: the Bulls when they got past the Pistons, I have
- 9:52Speaker 3: to use the Bulls. I think that if Otani can't
- 9:55Speaker 3: pitch or he can and they choose not to, that's
- 9:58Speaker 3: one less arm.
- 9:59Speaker 4: I know they have tons and tons of arms.
- 10:02Speaker 2: The problem with that analogy is that Jordan is in L.A.
- 10:05Speaker 2: His name is Shohei Otani. His pitching is somewhat irrelevant
- 10:08Speaker 2: to how good they are. They have four Cy Young-level
- 10:10Speaker 2: pitchers in their starting rotation. They don't need him pitching
- 10:13Speaker 2: at all. Maybe I'm overestimating the Dodgers, but they are
- 10:17Speaker 2: the modern dynasty.
- 10:19Speaker 3: You need a break to beat the Dodgers. You need
- 10:21Speaker 3: something to go your way and injury so much. But
- 10:23Speaker 3: the Blue Jays were so close last year. If you
- 10:25Speaker 3: look at the Dodgers analytically... They're going.
- 10:27Speaker 4: To be in the playoffs every year. Other teams aren't.
- 10:30Speaker 4: Brewers are. The Brewers are prepared for this. There's no excuses.
- 10:33Speaker 2: By the way, before we break, I don't think we
- 10:35Speaker 2: did helmet stickers.
- 10:36Speaker 4: Oh, helmet stickers?
- 10:36Speaker 2: Yeah, for the Browns Steelers. We've got to do our
- 10:38Speaker 2: helmet stickers.
- 10:39Speaker 5: You first.
- 10:39Speaker 2: Well, I haven't been able to put a kicker as
- 10:42Speaker 2: a helmet sticker, but last night, Andre Schmidt not only
- 10:44Speaker 2: hit the game winner, 56 yards for the Browns to win.
- 10:47Speaker 2: He apparently came up to Deshaun Watson before the drive
- 10:51Speaker 2: and said, get me to the 42-yard line. I just
- 10:53Speaker 2: want to try a 60-yarder to win.
- 10:55Speaker 4: That is guts. That's guts. He's calling a shot. And also,
- 10:58Speaker 4: he has no vowels in his last name. We like
- 11:00Speaker 4: that about him as well.
- 11:01Speaker 2: Why not a vowel?
- 11:02Speaker 4: Not in this case. Not in football terms.
- 11:04Speaker 2: Who do you got?
- 11:04Speaker 3: Helmet sticker, rookie wide receiver Denzel Boston. He was fantastic
- 11:08Speaker 3: last night. And he and Concepcion, you see those guys together.
- 11:11Speaker 3: Just such promise. Big guy, strong guy. Concepcion is more
- 11:15Speaker 3: the jitterbug guy. Fantastic pair with Harold Fannin. That's a
- 11:19Speaker 3: good-looking core. Jutkins in the backfield. Real nice job by
- 11:22Speaker 3: him last night.
- 11:23Speaker 2: I convinced the BRGs, the backroom guys, that Denzel Boston
- 11:26Speaker 2: was David Boston's son, and they believe that it's not true.
- 11:29Speaker 2: The former Cardinals receiver.
- 11:30Speaker 4: Until 10 seconds ago, I thought the same.
- 11:32Speaker 2: All right. On that note, Dan Patrick is booked for
- 11:35Speaker 2: the next segment. After listening to the first one, I'm
- 11:36Speaker 2: not sure he's going to want to come back here,
- 11:38Speaker 2: but he promised. So DP will be coming to Not
- 11:40Speaker 2: So Fast next.
- 11:43Speaker 4: All right, Pearl, it's a midday pick-me-up and not so fast.
- 11:46Speaker 4: Pass to Pearl off here. Watch this. You don't see
- 11:48Speaker 4: this a lot. The Browns dancing before the game's over.
- 11:52Speaker 4: Good for them.
- 11:53Speaker 1: Great win.
- 11:54Speaker 4: Everyone's jumping around, having a good time.
- 11:56Speaker 1: Take a knee.
- 11:57Speaker 4: Those uniforms are questionable. When you win, nobody cares.
- 11:59Speaker 2: I was so into Cleveland last night because the crowd
- 12:01Speaker 2: was so crazy. I was a Browns fan by the
- 12:04Speaker 2: end of the night.
- 12:04Speaker 4: Joining us now, bonus coverage here. Oh, look at this.
- 12:08Speaker 4: They're still ready to take the snap.
- 12:10Speaker 5: Oh.
- 12:10Speaker 3: Joining us now on Not So Fast, our buddy Dan Patrick,
- 12:12Speaker 3: fresh off the Dan Patrick show today. Now, when you
- 12:15Speaker 3: grew up, how split was it, your household, your family, Browns, Bengals?
- 12:20Speaker 1: When we lived in Zanesville, Ohio, we were Browns fans.
- 12:25Speaker 1: And then my dad got transferred to Cincinnati, and then
- 12:27Speaker 1: we became Bengals fans. But I kind of went kicking
- 12:31Speaker 1: and screaming because the Bengals weren't any good. But they had, like,
- 12:35Speaker 1: Paul Robinson. He was, I think, the Cactus Comet fan.
- 12:39Speaker 1: He rushed for 1,000 yards. They had Greg Cook, who
- 12:42Speaker 1: was going to be the next great quarterback out of
- 12:45Speaker 1: University of Cincinnati, Rookie of the Year. But after that,
- 12:49Speaker 1: I would always go see the teams that came to
- 12:51Speaker 1: play the Bengals. And then the Bengals got competitive. Kenny
- 12:55Speaker 1: Anderson was great. Boomer Sias and Joe Burrow. They've been fortunate.
- 12:59Speaker 1: And they played, what, three of the closest Super Bowls
- 13:03Speaker 1: in history.
- 13:03Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 13:05Speaker 1: But I've always had a soft spot in my heart
- 13:07Speaker 1: for the Browns because that was the team I grew
- 13:09Speaker 1: up on. Leroy Kelly, Ernie Green, Jim Brown. I still
- 13:13Speaker 1: name probably the entire starting lineup offensively and defensively. But
- 13:18Speaker 1: I have relatives who live in Cleveland. And I know
- 13:22Speaker 1: when the Browns win, Cleveland wins.
- 13:25Speaker 2: You asked Jason Garrett what team made you cry of
- 13:28Speaker 2: any sport. Was it a football team that made you
- 13:30Speaker 2: cry or baseball?
- 13:33Speaker 1: I don't. I would get sad when the Reds would
- 13:36Speaker 1: play the Oakland A's playoffs. I don't know if I cried,
- 13:44Speaker 1: but I do remember when the Reds were supposed to
- 13:46Speaker 1: win and when they didn't win. The other Cincinnati teams,
- 13:49Speaker 1: I don't know if I was, like the Cincinnati Royals
- 13:52Speaker 1: weren't expected to win. They made me cry, I think,
- 13:55Speaker 1: when they left, but I didn't have that moment where
- 13:59Speaker 1: But Jason Garrett's dad was on the staff of the
- 14:01Speaker 1: Cleveland Browns, and Brian Seip throws the interception in 1980
- 14:05Speaker 1: in the corner of the end zone. And the Browns
- 14:08Speaker 1: have had as much. They haven't had the heartbreak Buffalo's
- 14:12Speaker 1: had because Buffalo's gone to the Super Bowl. But when
- 14:14Speaker 1: you think about losses, Ernest Biner with the fumble, John
- 14:19Speaker 1: Elway with the drive, Brian Seip the interception, these are
- 14:23Speaker 1: just naming a few. Then you throw in the Cleveland
- 14:26Speaker 1: Indians where they got to the World Series. Man, I'm sorry, Cleveland.
- 14:29Speaker 3: Well, but it's a fascinating topic because the Detroit Lions,
- 14:32Speaker 3: they've been struggling. But then the basketball team does well.
- 14:35Speaker 3: The hockey team does well in Detroit. The entire city
- 14:38Speaker 3: of Cleveland, it does feel like Cleveland's ownership should get
- 14:41Speaker 3: more flack for this because.
- 14:43Speaker 4: They don't put them in position to win. They make
- 14:45Speaker 4: bad contracts.
- 14:46Speaker 3: But what you saw last night when you see those fans,
- 14:50Speaker 3: that's what you're talking about.
- 14:51Speaker 1: Yeah, and that's what I've said on the show about
- 14:53Speaker 1: Deshaun Watson. Stop being a baby. Stop being a victim here.
- 14:57Speaker 1: And just go out and play. Because that fan base
- 15:00Speaker 1: will root for you with the uniform you have on.
- 15:03Speaker 1: They may not root for you, but so what? Go
- 15:06Speaker 1: out there and prove you can play. Because the last
- 15:10Speaker 1: time we saw him play where we thought he was
- 15:12Speaker 1: a legitimate starting quarterback was in Houston. And nobody's talking
- 15:15Speaker 1: about Shador Sanders now. Now it's about Deshaun Watson. And
- 15:19Speaker 1: now you have a chance to at least be entertaining, competitive.
- 15:23Speaker 1: Not an oh-woe-is-me team going into the meat of your
- 15:28Speaker 1: schedule here. And they could end up 5-2 after seven games.
- 15:32Speaker 2: If they make the playoffs, do you re-sign Deshaun Watson?
- 15:36Speaker 1: I want to know what the numbers are with that.
- 15:40Speaker 1: But you're going to be... If you get to... Their
- 15:42Speaker 1: over-under is now 7.5. They're getting to no-man's land when
- 15:46Speaker 1: it comes... Now, they do have draft picks, but... Are
- 15:48Speaker 1: you going to use those draft picks, bundle, and try
- 15:52Speaker 1: to get your quarterback? And I think that would probably be.
- 15:56Speaker 1: There's a couple of things. Like the Titans with Cam Ward.
- 15:59Speaker 1: If you're on the clock and you've got the number
- 16:02Speaker 1: one pick, I don't know if I'm holding on to
- 16:05Speaker 1: Cam Ward.
- 16:05Speaker 2: What about the Giants? If Arch Manning is available for
- 16:08Speaker 2: the Giants, if they. Weirdly. Jameis can't win any games,
- 16:10Speaker 2: do they pull the trigger on a new quarterback?
- 16:14Speaker 1: I would stay with Jackson Dark.
- 16:15Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:17Speaker 1: I like Jackson Dart. I don't know about Arch Manning.
- 16:21Speaker 1: I'm told that he's great. I just need to see him.
- 16:26Speaker 1: And my friend who's a scout said he's got a process.
- 16:29Speaker 1: You get to the line of scrimmage, that's where the
- 16:31Speaker 1: games are won and lost with quarterbacks.
- 16:33Speaker 3: We have a theory here that we say Arch Manning,
- 16:35Speaker 3: it doesn't matter what he does on the field because
- 16:37Speaker 3: they trust the Manning name. If you look at Eli
- 16:39Speaker 3: Manning at Ole Miss, they didn't win a lot. He
- 16:42Speaker 3: was a nice player. He was a very nice college player.
- 16:44Speaker 3: But it's almost like I know that guy will not
- 16:46Speaker 3: cost me my job. He'll be a good player. It's
- 16:48Speaker 3: like there's no bust in Arch Manning. There is maybe
- 16:51Speaker 3: a ceiling.
- 16:53Speaker 1: Yeah, but Eli didn't do anything in the majority of
- 16:57Speaker 1: the season. And he won Super Bowls in large part
- 17:02Speaker 1: because they had great defenses. And he was asked to
- 17:04Speaker 1: make a couple plays. Did he make those plays? Absolutely.
- 17:07Speaker 1: But you don't even make the playoffs in the other seasons.
- 17:10Speaker 1: And his stats are average. Like, Interceptions to touchdowns, his
- 17:14Speaker 1: one loss.
- 17:15Speaker 2: He was a.
- 17:15Speaker 4: 500 quarterback in the regular season,. 117 and.
- 17:18Speaker 2: 117.
- 17:18Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 17:20Speaker 1: It worked. It worked. But is he any better than
- 17:24Speaker 1: Jim Plunkett?
- 17:25Speaker 2: No.
- 17:26Speaker 1: Who won a couple of Super Bowls.
- 17:27Speaker 3: You know, I want to go back to that because
- 17:29Speaker 3: you just brought up Jim Plunkett. One of the things
- 17:30Speaker 3: I think I really like that we do and you
- 17:32Speaker 3: do on the show is you go to bat for eras.
- 17:35Speaker 3: And you talk about, like, Greg Cook or you talk
- 17:37Speaker 3: about Ken Anderson. And I think that you take it
- 17:39Speaker 3: kind of seriously as– a national voice who watched these
- 17:43Speaker 3: guys play. A lot of us didn't see Greg Cook,
- 17:45Speaker 3: or I saw early Ken Anderson. How important is that
- 17:48Speaker 3: for you to give credit to an ABA player, a
- 17:51Speaker 3: former NFL player from the 70s?
- 17:53Speaker 1: I think it's easy to just, you know, get the
- 17:57Speaker 1: fruit off the top of the tree. But you've got
- 18:00Speaker 1: to dig down a little bit. And I love to
- 18:03Speaker 1: put things into perspective of, boy, this guy's the greatest
- 18:06Speaker 1: player whatever position, and I go, well, hold on here.
- 18:09Speaker 1: You know, there's these guys. When somebody says, oh, my God,
- 18:12Speaker 1: there's nobody like Manu Ginobili. Yes, there was Nate Archibald, left-handed, and,
- 18:18Speaker 1: you know, led the league in scoring and assist in
- 18:21Speaker 1: the same year. And I think sometimes we forget, you know,
- 18:24Speaker 1: like all those old guys, but I don't because I
- 18:27Speaker 1: think bringing them into the modern era... is great to
- 18:31Speaker 1: have that name resurface. So somebody goes, oh, I had
- 18:34Speaker 1: no idea about that guy.
- 18:35Speaker 3: One of my favorites that you go to bat for
- 18:36Speaker 3: is Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. And it's like, you saw him in Milwaukee.
- 18:40Speaker 3: I can't imagine seeing him in Milwaukee. I look at
- 18:43Speaker 3: his stats, they're galactic. And whenever people say he's the
- 18:46Speaker 3: best player of all time about certain people and Jabbar's
- 18:49Speaker 3: name doesn't come up.
- 18:49Speaker 4: It bothers you.
- 18:50Speaker 1: Yes, because I think Kareem's the greatest basketball player of
- 18:53Speaker 1: all time. Because if I look at high school, college,
- 18:57Speaker 1: and the pros... But it feels like he didn't, like
- 19:01Speaker 1: he let us down in the pros. The big man
- 19:03Speaker 1: Shaq let us down. Akeem didn't, but Akeem wasn't a giant.
- 19:08Speaker 1: David Robinson didn't let us down or Tim Duncan. But
- 19:11Speaker 1: it feels like the bigger you are, the more of a,
- 19:14Speaker 1: you didn't, you weren't as great as you should have been.
- 19:17Speaker 4: Or he missed the TV era. His prime was in
- 19:18Speaker 4: the late 70s.
- 19:19Speaker 1: I think that, I think Kareem, well, he had the
- 19:22Speaker 1: most unstoppable move in basketball history. Um, I think if
- 19:27Speaker 1: he had had Magic Johnson's personality, or Larry Bird's personality,
- 19:33Speaker 1: or Jordan's personality, or Isaiah's personality, I'd love to know
- 19:36Speaker 1: what he would have been like. Because he was so
- 19:39Speaker 1: cerebral and so many other things he was interested in.
- 19:43Speaker 1: The other guys wanted to kill you. I don't think
- 19:46Speaker 1: Kareem wanted to kill you. I think he's an underrated player,
- 19:49Speaker 1: which is... kind of crazy to say, but I just
- 19:53Speaker 1: remember where he's getting 28 and 16 every night, and
- 19:57Speaker 1: he led the Bucs to a title that didn't. They
- 20:00Speaker 1: had an aging Oscar Robertson, and they didn't have much
- 20:03Speaker 1: more than that. Bobby Dandridge was a good player, but
- 20:06Speaker 1: Greg Smith and John McLaughlin, those are nice players. Kareem
- 20:10Speaker 1: was unbelievable.
- 20:11Speaker 2: All I can tell you is I've never been in
- 20:13Speaker 2: a room with a taller man than when Kareem came
- 20:15Speaker 2: to the old man cave. Do you remember that day?
- 20:17Speaker 2: And we were, I was terrified. He came in, he
- 20:20Speaker 2: looked like he was not messing around at all. And
- 20:23Speaker 2: then I remember you, you got him to loosen up somehow. Baseball. Oh,
- 20:26Speaker 2: you got him off basketball.
- 20:28Speaker 1: Jackie Robinson. And he played first base when he was
- 20:31Speaker 1: growing up. And then, then we were off to the races. But,
- 20:35Speaker 1: but Kareem, like you got to work.
- 20:38Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 20:38Speaker 1: I mean, I'm I'm working when he walks in the
- 20:40Speaker 1: room and he doesn't walk in and he's like, you know,
- 20:43Speaker 1: glad hand. He's just kind of looking around, surveying the scene.
- 20:48Speaker 1: And once I got him into a comfort zone, then,
- 20:52Speaker 1: you know, I was able to get him. He was
- 20:53Speaker 1: unlike Bill Walton, who I don't have to say anything.
- 20:55Speaker 1: And Bill would just go for 15 minutes.
- 20:58Speaker 2: Can I relitigate an old sports topic that no one's litigated?
- 21:01Speaker 2: You were a paralegal. I was a paralegal. Okay. So
- 21:05Speaker 2: I had a question. I want to tell you the
- 21:07Speaker 2: first time I cried at sports was when the Eagles
- 21:09Speaker 2: lost to the Raiders in the 1981 Super Bowl.
- 21:12Speaker 1: With Jaws?
- 21:13Speaker 2: With Jaws. The Raiders cheated. They had stick them everywhere.
- 21:16Speaker 2: Fred Belitnikoff, the ball just get anywhere near him. That
- 21:18Speaker 2: was a flawed Super Bowl.
- 21:20Speaker 3: I think it was technically legal at the time.
- 21:22Speaker 2: Lester Hayes?
- 21:23Speaker 1: But weren't the Eagles able to have stick them?
- 21:26Speaker 2: They just, nobody said white uniforms. They didn't want to
- 21:28Speaker 2: get them all dirty.
- 21:29Speaker 1: Is that what it was?
- 21:30Speaker 5: Cleanliness.
- 21:31Speaker 1: Yeah, they're worried about the laundry not winning the Super Bowl.
- 21:34Speaker 2: But I remember my mom told me that I wept
- 21:37Speaker 2: at that. By the way, I didn't want to mention
- 21:38Speaker 2: my mom. She kind of broke her heart today. Why?
- 21:42Speaker 2: You have Ray's parents into the man cave.
- 21:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 21:45Speaker 2: You know, my parents love coming to Dan Patrick's show.
- 21:48Speaker 2: My mom texted me and said, what are they doing?
- 21:52Speaker 1: Well, Big Day Ray's mom was cooking.
- 21:54Speaker 2: Yes.
- 21:54Speaker 5: Yes.
- 21:55Speaker 1: I don't know if your mom can cook.
- 21:57Speaker 2: Carol Perloff?
- 21:58Speaker 6: Yes.
- 21:59Speaker 1: But if she wanted to do a meat Friday and
- 22:00Speaker 1: had a special dish.
- 22:02Speaker 2: Don't make that invitation if you don't meet her.
- 22:03Speaker 4: Now you're pressured. Now she has to show up.
- 22:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:05Speaker 4: She's been invited.
- 22:06Speaker 1: Be careful. Did the Bears make you cry?
- 22:10Speaker 4: No, I've never cried over a loss.
- 22:11Speaker 1: Did Leon Durham ball go through your legs.
- 22:13Speaker 5: Make you cry?
- 22:13Speaker 1: That's a tough one.
- 22:14Speaker 3: That was, by the way, the same day as Walter
- 22:17Speaker 3: Payton broke the rushing record, so his tears and joy.
- 22:19Speaker 3: I've never cried during a sporting event. Not in a
- 22:21Speaker 3: negative way. I've gotten emotional watching a good performance or something.
- 22:25Speaker 4: I'm unemotional, you know.
- 22:26Speaker 2: I was going to say that, you know, I can't
- 22:30Speaker 2: bring my dad here. Yeah.
- 22:32Speaker 4: Oh, you know what he's doing? Yeah.
- 22:34Speaker 2: DDC. Yeah, just say, like, I'm one of the Danettes,
- 22:38Speaker 2: former Danettes, who can't bring a dad.
- 22:39Speaker 1: Old dad's dead.
- 22:40Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 22:41Speaker 4: Long time.
- 22:41Speaker 1: But I'm not longing for another dad.
- 22:44Speaker 5: Okay.
- 22:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:46Speaker 1: I don't need another dad.
- 22:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:48Speaker 1: I'm daddy.
- 22:49Speaker 3: That's Dan Patrick joining us here on Not So Fast.
- 22:52Speaker 4: Let the awkwardness commence.
- 22:54Speaker 2: Stick around.
- 22:54Speaker 4: We're going to get to warm takes right after the break.
- 22:57Speaker 4: Paps and Perloff here.
- 22:58Speaker 3: Not so fast. College football time is here. We love
- 23:00Speaker 3: college football towns. We're going to Starkville, Mississippi. And I
- 23:03Speaker 3: know you've been there. I'm going to get to you
- 23:04Speaker 3: in a second on this. We had a lot of response.
- 23:07Speaker 3: We asked where to go eat, where to go drink.
- 23:09Speaker 3: Kind of dive bar-ish, not maybe sports bar-ish. We got
- 23:11Speaker 3: a bunch of recos. Dave's Dark Horse Tavern.
- 23:14Speaker 2: Oh.
- 23:15Speaker 4: Hobie's Tiki Dogs.
- 23:16Speaker 3: And then, of course, Lil Dewey's Barbecue, which is very
- 23:19Speaker 3: popular and a staple down there.
- 23:20Speaker 4: You actually had a meal in Starkville?
- 23:22Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 23:23Speaker 2: I had Thanksgiving dinner with Lee Corso in 2004 in Starkville, Mississippi. Obviously,
- 23:29Speaker 2: Mississippi State, Mississippi played Thanksgiving weekend. We had to go
- 23:32Speaker 2: on Wednesday night. Lee Corso and I sat right near
- 23:35Speaker 2: each other. We had the best time. And then afterwards,
- 23:38Speaker 2: we saw each other at the grocery store because he
- 23:39Speaker 2: bought four giant bottles of Diet Coke.
- 23:41Speaker 4: And the restaurant was?
- 23:43Speaker 2: I can't remember.
- 23:44Speaker 3: We need help remembering the restaurant Lee Corso and Andrew
- 23:47Speaker 3: Perloff went to.
- 23:47Speaker 4: In Starkville 20 years ago.
- 23:49Speaker 2: Yeah, and a whole crew.
- 23:49Speaker 5: All right.
- 23:51Speaker 4: Dave's Dark Horse, Hobie's. Little Dewey's, go eat, watch some football.
- 23:55Speaker 4: We're done.
- 23:55Speaker 2: I want to try Hobie's. Welcome back. Not so fast.
- 24:00Speaker 2: Andrew Perloff, Paul Pabst. Yeah, I can't remember the name
- 24:03Speaker 2: of that restaurant.
- 24:03Speaker 4: We'll figure it out.
- 24:04Speaker 5: All right.
- 24:05Speaker 2: Coming up this weekend, tomorrow night, the Huskies. Washington heads
- 24:09Speaker 2: his USC primetime for a Big Ten Saturday night. It's
- 24:12Speaker 2: Washington at number 18 USC tomorrow night at 7 p.m.
- 24:15Speaker 2: Eastern on NBC and Peacock.
- 24:18Speaker 4: It is going to be warm there.
- 24:20Speaker 3: 430 local kickoff, 98 degrees at noon, maybe 95 for kickoff.
- 24:24Speaker 3: Speaking of that, warm takes right on cue. Time for
- 24:27Speaker 3: some warm takes to get you warm for the weekend.
- 24:29Speaker 3: I'm going to go back to Steelers versus Browns, Rogers
- 24:33Speaker 3: versus Watson.
- 24:34Speaker 4: I call this game the unlikable.
- 24:36Speaker 3: These are two quarterbacks that social media cannot stand for
- 24:38Speaker 3: different reasons.
- 24:39Speaker 4: I'm not going to get into the reasons. But these guys,
- 24:42Speaker 4: you throw a touchdown, and I hate this guy because
- 24:44Speaker 4: of this.
- 24:44Speaker 3: It was wild to see Deshaun Watson and Aaron Rodgers
- 24:48Speaker 3: play well at different points in the game, and social
- 24:51Speaker 3: media just cannot stand them. So the bigger picture is
- 24:54Speaker 3: the Browns are 3-1. They're in really good shape, and
- 24:56Speaker 3: they haven't been in really good shape in a really
- 24:58Speaker 3: long time.
- 24:59Speaker 4: But here's my problem.
- 25:00Speaker 3: I don't want Deshaun Watson on my team after this season,
- 25:03Speaker 3: and I think they should make a mandate or a
- 25:05Speaker 3: decision now, no matter what happens, almost like be disciplined.
- 25:08Speaker 3: I mean, if you look at the Vikings got rid
- 25:10Speaker 3: of Sam Darnold after winning 13 games and having 35 touchdowns.
- 25:13Speaker 3: If Deshaun Watson throws for 25 touchdowns and 12 picks
- 25:17Speaker 3: and they win nine games, are you going to give
- 25:19Speaker 3: him a three-year $ 150 million deal? Are you giving him
- 25:22Speaker 3: another $ 150 million? I don't want to get into his baggage,
- 25:25Speaker 3: but this is a guy that you've kind of outlasted
- 25:28Speaker 3: or he outlasted you or whatever.
- 25:29Speaker 4: You want to say.
- 25:30Speaker 3: I know he's playing well now, but I don't think
- 25:32Speaker 3: he's that great of a quarterback. I think he's a
- 25:34Speaker 3: solid quarterback. I don't think you could win a Super
- 25:36Speaker 3: Bowl with him no matter what team you have around him.
- 25:38Speaker 4: And that's not personal. That's just his playing ability. He's okay.
- 25:41Speaker 4: He's solid.
- 25:41Speaker 3: He's not like he was with the Texans five years ago.
- 25:44Speaker 3: And then the off-field stuff, he's never going to be
- 25:46Speaker 3: embraced by some people, whether it be fans or media
- 25:49Speaker 3: or whoever it may be. So I think as a franchise,
- 25:51Speaker 3: you have a good team. You have a lot of
- 25:53Speaker 3: good young players on rookie deals.
- 25:55Speaker 4: That's great.
- 25:56Speaker 3: When this contract ends, no matter what he does, you say,
- 25:59Speaker 3: good luck to you in the future. We are going
- 26:01Speaker 3: a different direction with the position. You want to get
- 26:03Speaker 3: Mac Jones in there?
- 26:04Speaker 5: Fine.
- 26:04Speaker 4: You want to make a play for a rookie? That's fine.
- 26:06Speaker 3: You have a very good team. But the days are
- 26:09Speaker 3: over for Deshaun Watson at the end of the season.
- 26:11Speaker 3: Be disciplined about it and just say, we got some
- 26:13Speaker 3: good days out of it. It didn't work out big picture.
- 26:15Speaker 3: And don't let that cloud your thinking and give him
- 26:17Speaker 3: another $ 150 million.
- 26:19Speaker 2: What if they offer him one year for $ 35 million,
- 26:22Speaker 2: Baker Mayfield style, and say, hey, if you want to
- 26:25Speaker 2: come back for the.
- 26:26Speaker 1: Cheap, we'll do it.
- 26:26Speaker 2: Would you still say no?
- 26:27Speaker 3: I don't think Deshaun Watson would do that. I don't
- 26:29Speaker 3: think his agent would let him do that. I think
- 26:31Speaker 3: they would go to the best three-year offer. He's not
- 26:33Speaker 3: going to get five years, 275. The best-case scenario for
- 26:36Speaker 3: him would be like a Sam Darnold, a Baker Mayfield.
- 26:40Speaker 3: A three-year, $ 50 million a year would be the max
- 26:43Speaker 3: he could get.
- 26:44Speaker 2: His agent is David Mulageta, so we'll see. Or at
- 26:47Speaker 2: least it used to be.
- 26:47Speaker 4: Mulageta should be his name.
- 26:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I think he's stuck with him. Yeah, I think
- 26:52Speaker 2: that sounds good in theory, but if they're a good team,
- 26:54Speaker 2: if they win 10 games, they're not going to be
- 26:56Speaker 2: able to draft a quarterback. So where do you get
- 26:57Speaker 2: a quarterback? You're not signing a free agent. What free
- 26:59Speaker 2: agent quarterback is signing with Cleveland?
- 27:01Speaker 4: Like Mac Jones.
- 27:02Speaker 3: If you told Mac Jones, we'll give you— Mac Jones
- 27:03Speaker 3: is not going to Cleveland. I would— If I'm Mac Jones,
- 27:06Speaker 3: this is your one chance to run a franchise. You
- 27:08Speaker 3: have a nice team, defense, offense. I think they have
- 27:10Speaker 3: nine draft picks, three fourths, two firsts. They're in good shape.
- 27:14Speaker 3: But Deshaun Watson is not the answer. And don't let
- 27:17Speaker 3: this three, four games cloud it.
- 27:19Speaker 2: They had to pay Deshaun $ 220 million to go to Cleveland.
- 27:22Speaker 2: Mac Jones is from Florida. is playing out in San Francisco.
- 27:25Speaker 2: And he hated being in New England. Mac Jones is
- 27:28Speaker 2: not going to Cleveland. He's not a Cleveland quarterback.
- 27:30Speaker 4: Mark this one down.
- 27:30Speaker 2: And you know it. There's no way Mac Jones is
- 27:32Speaker 2: signing with the Browns. Okay, I'm going to stick with
- 27:35Speaker 2: the NFL for my warm take. We have San Francisco
- 27:38Speaker 2: and Denver facing off this weekend. This could be a
- 27:42Speaker 2: Super Bowl preview. With Dan, we're talking about old-school Super Bowls.
- 27:45Speaker 2: I believe the Broncos and 49ers played, but the Broncos
- 27:48Speaker 2: never competed in the 80s in these Super Bowls. But
- 27:51Speaker 2: we could be seeing a Super Bowl preview. Obviously, the
- 27:55Speaker 2: Broncos were a lot of people's pick, including myself. Now,
- 27:58Speaker 2: they haven't really put it all together, but they are 2-1.
- 28:00Speaker 2: And the Niners was nobody's Super Bowl pick. But guess what?
- 28:03Speaker 2: They absolutely should have been. A couple numbers here. San
- 28:07Speaker 2: Francisco is second in the league with 32 points a game. Unbelievable.
- 28:11Speaker 2: Brock Purdy, MVP candidate. And they don't even really have
- 28:14Speaker 2: Nick Bosa. He's coming back by week seven. And then Denver, meanwhile,
- 28:18Speaker 2: the last two years, Denver has led the entire NFL
- 28:20Speaker 2: in sacks. They're a little behind this year, but the
- 28:23Speaker 2: reason is they played the Chiefs, the Jaguars, and Rams.
- 28:26Speaker 2: That means Andy Reid, Liam Cohen, and Sean McVay. And
- 28:30Speaker 2: now they have another... Offensive genius to face. But once
- 28:34Speaker 2: Denver gets an easier schedule, I think they're going to
- 28:35Speaker 2: tear people up on defense. Now, we can talk about
- 28:38Speaker 2: Bo Nix. Is he good for hours on end? I
- 28:42Speaker 2: don't care. Denver wins. Bo Nix wins in the fourth quarter.
- 28:45Speaker 2: These two teams look like legit Super Bowl contenders to me.
- 28:49Speaker 3: Yeah, I like the Denver aspect of this. I don't
- 28:51Speaker 3: really care what Bo Nix does in the first three
- 28:53Speaker 3: quarters because he's clutch. I wish he would play better,
- 28:55Speaker 3: and I'm sure Denver fans wish he would play better.
- 28:57Speaker 3: But that team was really good. They were really close
- 29:00Speaker 3: last year. And what's going on with Brock Purdy, he's
- 29:02Speaker 3: finally getting there. I think getting rid of Ayuk was big.
- 29:05Speaker 3: Just getting that mess off the roster. Look, I know
- 29:08Speaker 3: they've got injuries, but they're used to being injured, the Niners.
- 29:10Speaker 3: It doesn't phase them.
- 29:11Speaker 4: Next man up. They're playing fantastic. It's fun.
- 29:13Speaker 2: Well, we'll see. I mean, they're going to face a
- 29:14Speaker 2: real defense for the first time in a while. Brock
- 29:16Speaker 2: Purdy's been unstoppable. But if Nick Medino and company can
- 29:20Speaker 2: get to him, it might be different.
- 29:21Speaker 4: All right.
- 29:21Speaker 3: Next warm take for me. I'm going back to college football.
- 29:24Speaker 3: Going back to Starkville.
- 29:25Speaker 4: Here we go. We mentioned him before. You love this guy.
- 29:27Speaker 3: Camario Taylor, the star quarterback of Mississippi State Bulldogs. You're
- 29:30Speaker 3: getting to know his name. He's getting known. People have
- 29:33Speaker 3: compared him, like pro scouts and different things, to Cam Newton.
- 29:36Speaker 3: It's an easy comp, big kid, runs and passes.
- 29:38Speaker 4: Okay, great.
- 29:39Speaker 3: If you look back at Camaro Taylor, he was not
- 29:42Speaker 3: really well known to the casual fan just six weeks ago.
- 29:45Speaker 3: It reminds me of young Cam Newton. Cam Newton in 2010,
- 29:48Speaker 3: he was at Florida. It didn't work out well there.
- 29:50Speaker 3: He went to junior college, then took over Auburn football.
- 29:53Speaker 3: He was 4-0 in the month of September, and I
- 29:55Speaker 3: remember watching a game and texting Dan Patrick.
- 29:57Speaker 4: I go, are you seeing this guy? He goes, which guy?
- 30:00Speaker 4: I go, Cameron Newton. The announcers were calling him Cameron.
- 30:03Speaker 3: The screen said Cameron Newton, and in our notes the
- 30:05Speaker 3: next day, Dan goes, we're going to talk about this
- 30:07Speaker 3: guy Cameron Newton. Six weeks later, he's a household name,
- 30:10Speaker 3: and he's one of the biggest stars in football. There's controversy,
- 30:13Speaker 3: but he's playing well, and he led Auburn to a
- 30:15Speaker 3: national title. Camario Taylor, you can do something like this.
- 30:18Speaker 3: You can pull something like this off, and it's sure
- 30:20Speaker 3: not easy, especially at Mississippi State. Kamara Taylor in October,
- 30:25Speaker 3: he's got Bama, LSU, Oklahoma, and number one, Texas. You
- 30:29Speaker 3: can go from being a guy that people know and
- 30:31Speaker 3: people like for next year's draft, when I mean 2028,
- 30:35Speaker 3: or you could be going to take a look at
- 30:37Speaker 3: the Heisman in eight to ten weeks. You could be
- 30:40Speaker 3: talking about the face of college football in five weeks. Now,
- 30:43Speaker 3: you're saying Kamara Taylor, Mississippi State? Who said Cam Newton
- 30:46Speaker 3: or Cameron Newton was going to do that in 2010?
- 30:48Speaker 2: I'll give you a couple of reasons that I'm worried.
- 30:51Speaker 2: It's September Heisman, and I think he's two now.
- 30:54Speaker 1: Yep.
- 30:54Speaker 2: A little early. You just mentioned that schedule. That's a
- 30:57Speaker 2: come-down-to-earth schedule.
- 30:58Speaker 4: Or an opportunity schedule.
- 31:00Speaker 2: I don't think college football works that way. Most of
- 31:03Speaker 2: your success depends on your schedule.
- 31:04Speaker 3: If he outduels Arch Manning on national TV, it's.
- 31:08Speaker 2: It's one thing to outduel South Carolina or Missouri, but...
- 31:12Speaker 2: It's not Arch Manning he has to worry about. It's
- 31:14Speaker 2: those future NFL players on Texas' defensive line.
- 31:17Speaker 4: They've got a few.
- 31:18Speaker 2: So that's the problem. I looked it up, by the way,
- 31:20Speaker 2: why we never heard of Kamario Terrell. He was the
- 31:22Speaker 2: number 80 player in the recruiting class. Number one in
- 31:26Speaker 2: that class was Bryce Underwood. Not good. And then Keelan Russell,
- 31:30Speaker 2: who will play this weekend, was number two. But then
- 31:31Speaker 2: there were eight other quarterbacks before Kamario Terrell. Some of
- 31:35Speaker 2: them are playing, but some of them are not playing
- 31:37Speaker 2: at all. I always love looking back at recruiting rankings.
- 31:39Speaker 4: Oh, it's the best.
- 31:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 31:40Speaker 5: Okay.
- 31:41Speaker 2: For my warm take, I'll have a little bit of
- 31:43Speaker 2: high school in there, actually, because this weekend we see
- 31:46Speaker 2: the Texans play the Cowboys. Now, listen, the state of
- 31:50Speaker 2: Texas obviously loves our NFL. Dallas Cowboys, God's favorite team
- 31:54Speaker 2: and all that. And Houston, Texas are popular. But both
- 31:56Speaker 2: those teams better win this weekend because whoever loses is
- 32:00Speaker 2: in big trouble. The Cowboys just traded for Joey Porter Jr.
- 32:03Speaker 2: They can't fall to 1-3. And the Texans obviously can't
- 32:06Speaker 2: go 0-4. I don't know if they're ever going to
- 32:09Speaker 2: lose fan interest, especially in Dallas, but there's a lot
- 32:12Speaker 2: of football competition in Texas. Obviously, we have the Longhorns
- 32:16Speaker 2: number one. And, you know, Friday night's fall. It doesn't
- 32:19Speaker 2: matter what happens on Sunday. Let me tell you about
- 32:21Speaker 2: a guy who is ripping up the fields in Texas.
- 32:24Speaker 2: Landon William Callis out of Randall High School could set
- 32:28Speaker 2: the Texas high school running record and the national high
- 32:31Speaker 2: school record.
- 32:31Speaker 4: I've seen this guy. This running back, he's all over
- 32:34Speaker 4: social media.
- 32:34Speaker 2: Yeah, Sark was at his game last night. He's ripping
- 32:37Speaker 2: up the record book. But here's the fun part about him.
- 32:40Speaker 2: He goes to Randall High School. Guess what his coach's
- 32:42Speaker 2: name is? Brian Randall.
- 32:44Speaker 4: Randall High School. No.
- 32:46Speaker 2: So his coach's name is Randall and his high school's
- 32:49Speaker 2: name is Randall. And he's setting every record. My point is, Texas,
- 32:53Speaker 2: you can lose interest in pro football pretty fast. There's
- 32:55Speaker 2: a lot that's put into the Cowboys and a lot
- 32:57Speaker 2: that's put into the Texans. These two teams are in
- 32:59Speaker 2: real danger of becoming irrelevant.
- 33:01Speaker 4: You know, I'd love to know. We may put this
- 33:02Speaker 4: out there on social media, not so fast. Follow us
- 33:04Speaker 4: on Twitter.
- 33:05Speaker 3: If the casual sports fan or the serious sports fan
- 33:07Speaker 3: in that state could pick the Cowboys to win the title,
- 33:10Speaker 3: the Texans to win the title, or the Longhorns to
- 33:13Speaker 3: win the title, who would win that poll?
- 33:15Speaker 2: Well.
- 33:16Speaker 4: I think it's the Longhorns.
- 33:17Speaker 2: No, no, no.
- 33:18Speaker 4: I know there's A & M fans.
- 33:18Speaker 2: Well, yeah, I mean, it's Dallas and Houston. If you're
- 33:21Speaker 2: in Houston, you want the Jets.
- 33:22Speaker 4: But I'm saying a statewide poll.
- 33:24Speaker 2: My only thing is A & M is pretty big, too.
- 33:26Speaker 2: If you're in Houston, you're more likely an A &
- 33:27Speaker 2: M fan. And by the way, so this kid, Landon
- 33:31Speaker 2: William Callis, chose between UT and A & M, and
- 33:34Speaker 2: he went with UT and broke so many hearts.
- 33:36Speaker 4: Shocking.
- 33:36Speaker 3: I bet you he did pretty well there. All right,
- 33:38Speaker 3: coming up next, it's the clip joint here on Not
- 33:40Speaker 3: So Fast. We're going to chop it all up.
- 33:42Speaker 2: Stick around.
- 33:43Speaker 4: Dan Patrick was here earlier today. A lot coming up.
- 33:45Speaker 4: Stick around. Not so fast.
- 33:51Speaker 1: I don't know if it's panic time yet, but what
- 33:54Speaker 1: we've seen from the Chargers with Justin Herbert, it's got
- 33:56Speaker 1: to be alarming. And now you go to Seattle. If
- 34:00Speaker 1: they start out 0-4, what are we doing?
- 34:04Speaker 7: Yeah, alarming is obviously the word. Picture the offense that
- 34:10Speaker 7: Mike McDaniel ran in Miami with Tua. It was almost
- 34:13Speaker 7: like ball in, ball out, boom, right behind the ear
- 34:16Speaker 7: of the linebacker. These 8, 10, 12-yard completions, like he's
- 34:20Speaker 7: turning two. Like he's a shortstop, bang, get it out
- 34:22Speaker 7: of my hand. Justin Herbert is not that guy. Justin
- 34:26Speaker 7: Herbert's a longer strider. He's back in the pocket, driving
- 34:29Speaker 7: the ball down the field. And I just don't feel
- 34:32Speaker 7: like the marriage has been real smooth so far.
- 34:35Speaker 1: And the problem is, is they're losing games.
- 34:38Speaker 3: Back on Not So Fast with Paxton Perloff, NBC Sports.
- 34:42Speaker 3: We're still arguing Camaro Taylor's Heisman candidate during the break.
- 34:45Speaker 3: They were just chopping that up. This would be a
- 34:47Speaker 3: concerning cut. When I listen to that back, if I'm
- 34:49Speaker 3: a Chargers fan, I am actually more concerned. What he
- 34:52Speaker 3: was saying, Coach Garrett, that this offense is not right
- 34:56Speaker 3: for Justin Herbert. And we said before the season, Jim
- 34:59Speaker 3: Harbaugh and Mike McDaniels can be so fun together. We
- 35:02Speaker 3: were into them as a couple, almost like, as a
- 35:05Speaker 3: odd couple of tones. One guy is from the 50s.
- 35:07Speaker 3: The other guy looks like an IT guy. But he's
- 35:09Speaker 3: saying this offense doesn't match Justin Herbert.
- 35:11Speaker 4: That's shocking.
- 35:12Speaker 2: It's one of those takes that I greatly regret how
- 35:14Speaker 2: excited I got about Mike McDaniel going to the Chargers.
- 35:18Speaker 2: The other thing, too, O'Marion Hampton, their starting running back,
- 35:21Speaker 2: doesn't fit this offense at all either. The backup Keaton
- 35:24Speaker 2: Mitchell from Baltimore is a much better fit for a
- 35:27Speaker 2: Mike McDaniel offense. Why didn't we know this in August?
- 35:30Speaker 2: Because every fantasy draft had the Chargers guys at the top,
- 35:33Speaker 2: and now they don't look like they don't know what
- 35:34Speaker 2: they're doing.
- 35:35Speaker 3: Well, I think the casual fan or the casual media
- 35:36Speaker 3: person says, it's not working out.
- 35:38Speaker 4: Get better.
- 35:39Speaker 3: But when you hear this, it's saying it won't get
- 35:41Speaker 3: better because it's the wrong offense. And that's a scare quote.
- 35:45Speaker 2: Well, could you argue that these guys need more time?
- 35:48Speaker 2: For example, my Eagles, Sean Mannion is the offensive coordinator,
- 35:50Speaker 2: and Jalen Hurts, they don't look like they're on the
- 35:52Speaker 2: same page. It's only three games. Same with Davis Webb
- 35:55Speaker 2: and Bo Nix in Denver. And maybe Mike McDaniels just
- 35:58Speaker 2: needs time. Is that a legitimate argument?
- 36:00Speaker 3: Right, but how much time if you have a losing record?
- 36:02Speaker 3: Like the Eagles in that division, I think they're going
- 36:05Speaker 3: to be okay.
- 36:05Speaker 4: They're going to keep the float.
- 36:06Speaker 2: That helps.
- 36:07Speaker 4: It does help. And the Chargers.
- 36:09Speaker 3: One more loss, and you will start thinking, this isn't
- 36:11Speaker 3: going to happen. Could you imagine Mike McDaniel after one
- 36:15Speaker 3: season being out?
- 36:16Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely. Justin Herbert's the franchise. Mike McDaniel, they don't
- 36:20Speaker 2: need him. Sorry, buddy.
- 36:22Speaker 3: There's a schedule coming up, and it doesn't really matter
- 36:24Speaker 3: what game because it seems like the Chargers play to
- 36:26Speaker 3: their opponent. All right, let's get back to last night.
- 36:29Speaker 3: Nice win for the Browns. Nice win for Todd Munkin.
- 36:32Speaker 3: Todd Munkin, who we felt bad for in August, now
- 36:34Speaker 3: is 3-1. Here's what he had to say after the game.
- 36:38Speaker 2: I mean, I'm human.
- 36:41Speaker 8: I mean, I don't go beyond thoughts. If you said
- 36:45Speaker 8: that was the way we would start the season after
- 36:49Speaker 8: the way we worked, I would have said you're nuts.
- 36:52Speaker 8: And if you'd have said we'd be 3-1 after that
- 36:54Speaker 8: first game, I'd have said you're nuts. But that's a
- 36:56Speaker 8: credit to our players because all they do is just work.
- 37:00Speaker 5: It's them.
- 37:00Speaker 8: I mean, they didn't blink. Like I said, that week
- 37:04Speaker 8: after was a little chippy, and that was a good thing.
- 37:07Speaker 8: They were not happy. with the way we played, and
- 37:13Speaker 8: sometimes that's good.
- 37:14Speaker 3: He even sounds like the coach in Major League, the
- 37:17Speaker 3: old coach who's crusty like this.
- 37:18Speaker 4: Yeah, Lou Boudreau. Yeah, Lou Boudreau.
- 37:21Speaker 3: If you were doing a movie about the up-and-coming Browns,
- 37:23Speaker 3: you'd get this craggly old coach with a scraaky voice.
- 37:27Speaker 2: He has never said true words. After that Jacksonville game
- 37:29Speaker 2: in Week 1, I would have thought that Browns might
- 37:32Speaker 2: have another 0-17 season. The turnaround between that game and
- 37:35Speaker 2: this game is a miracle.
- 37:37Speaker 3: And the other thing is a lot of people said
- 37:38Speaker 3: when Watson got the start two weeks ago, enjoy Deshaun
- 37:42Speaker 3: Watson's last start in the NFL and he's going to
- 37:43Speaker 3: be gone. They're going to go to Shador Sanders, whatever
- 37:45Speaker 3: it may be. And now the quarterback situation is the
- 37:48Speaker 3: least of their problems, if they have any problems.
- 37:49Speaker 2: Yeah, Browns insider Mary Kay Cabot, a good friend of
- 37:51Speaker 2: the Dan Patrick show, said that they're looking at Shador
- 37:54Speaker 2: for week three. Now Shador isn't even, as DP said earlier,
- 37:57Speaker 2: no one talks about Shador.
- 37:59Speaker 4: And you could play your way out of almost anything.
- 38:01Speaker 2: Absolutely. All right, on the other side of the ball,
- 38:03Speaker 2: Mike McCarthy and Aaron Rodgers had a heated exchange. A
- 38:07Speaker 2: lot of lip reading going on last night. Let's listen
- 38:11Speaker 2: to McCarthy talking about what happened.
- 38:15Speaker 5: Communication sometimes is not the best choice of words, but
- 38:19Speaker 5: everybody's competing on the field. And I think, you know,
- 38:22Speaker 5: what's said on the field, the way I grew up
- 38:25Speaker 5: in this game, you know, usually stays on the field.
- 38:27Speaker 5: That's not the case today. I understand that. But, yeah, any...
- 38:31Speaker 5: Negative communication on my part. I wish I wouldn't use
- 38:35Speaker 5: those words.
- 38:36Speaker 2: You know, if you're a Steelers fan, you might be
- 38:38Speaker 2: nervous because Mike McCarthy and Aaron Rodgers are cussing each
- 38:41Speaker 2: other out and TJ Watts getting on the phone screaming
- 38:43Speaker 2: at somebody. This looks bad, right? Steelers always do this.
- 38:47Speaker 2: They always lose in Cleveland. They always turn it around.
- 38:51Speaker 2: I'm not worried about this Aaron Rodgers-McCarthy dust-up at all.
- 38:53Speaker 3: I don't think there's anything to this. Aaron Rodgers has
- 38:55Speaker 3: been doing this for years. There's usually not an overhead
- 38:57Speaker 3: camera watching him saying it. And McCarthy, he F-bombed him
- 39:01Speaker 3: right back. You need one of those things. You put
- 39:03Speaker 3: the flip chart up. The microphone, they should have a
- 39:06Speaker 3: little cover so you can't read their lips as they're
- 39:08Speaker 3: swearing to each other.
- 39:08Speaker 2: Absolutely. And Rodgers, I think, I can't exactly read his lips,
- 39:12Speaker 2: will curse out his receivers when they drop the ball,
- 39:14Speaker 2: which is way too often.
- 39:14Speaker 3: There should be a blue channel where you can hear
- 39:16Speaker 3: exactly what they're saying because Rodgers curses out everybody.
- 39:19Speaker 2: Yeah, he's like too old. I don't care anymore. Aaron
- 39:22Speaker 2: Rodgers has nothing to lose. He's playing like that.
- 39:24Speaker 4: He doesn't have a turn signal on his car. He
- 39:26Speaker 4: backs up without looking. He does whatever he wants.
- 39:27Speaker 2: Yeah, why not? I mean, what are they going to do?
- 39:29Speaker 2: Make him retire? He's already retiring at the end of
- 39:31Speaker 2: the year.
- 39:32Speaker 4: He's got three months left. He doesn't care.
- 39:33Speaker 3: All right, let's get to a team that's doing pretty well.
- 39:35Speaker 3: Liam Cohen, he doesn't swear. He's the head coach of
- 39:37Speaker 3: the Jaguars. Jaguars are playing well, not getting a lot
- 39:40Speaker 3: of coverage. You've heard this story before. And they've got
- 39:43Speaker 3: the Bengals coming up. Here's what Liam Cohen thinks of
- 39:45Speaker 3: the quarterback, Joe Burrow.
- 39:48Speaker 6: The down in down out accuracy that you just take
- 39:51Speaker 6: for granted. I think in a lot of ways that, um,
- 39:55Speaker 6: you know, challenging throws under duress, under pressure with somebody
- 40:00Speaker 6: bearing down on them and the ball just like lands
- 40:03Speaker 6: in a, in the, in the spots that, you know,
- 40:05Speaker 6: he could put the ball wherever he wants.
- 40:07Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 40:07Speaker 6: A ton of respect for Joe, a ton of respect for, uh,
- 40:11Speaker 6: the way that he's played throughout the course of his career,
- 40:14Speaker 6: the plays that he's made, uh, the games that he's won. Um, Yeah,
- 40:18Speaker 6: anytime he's across from you, you know that they have
- 40:21Speaker 6: a chance.
- 40:22Speaker 2: You know, actually, Liam Cohen is a bit of a maniac,
- 40:24Speaker 2: which is weird. We met him before. I met him
- 40:26Speaker 2: at the Kansas City Draft, and I'm like, that's a
- 40:28Speaker 2: mild-mannered guy. Then he goes nuts. But he's right about
- 40:31Speaker 2: Joe Burrow. He's a great offensive coach, man. If he
- 40:34Speaker 2: got together with Joe Burrow, it would be great. But
- 40:35Speaker 2: look what Liam's done with Trevor Lawrence. It's really awesome.
- 40:39Speaker 3: Yeah, Trevor Lawrence was getting the kind of criticism two
- 40:41Speaker 3: years ago that we're giving some of these quarterbacks today.
- 40:43Speaker 4: What happened to this guy? And now.
- 40:45Speaker 3: Everyone's like, oh, Trevor Lawrence, he's just playing good football
- 40:47Speaker 3: week in, week out, and with very little coverage, and
- 40:49Speaker 3: that's a good thing.
- 40:50Speaker 2: Isn't it funny this Jacksonville Cincinnati game, two of the
- 40:52Speaker 2: best teams in the AFC? There's so many premier games
- 40:55Speaker 2: this week. It's hard to pay attention to that one.
- 40:57Speaker 2: I don't think it's getting the buzz at Marist.
- 40:59Speaker 4: It's going to get completely lost in the shuffle.
- 41:01Speaker 3: All right, before we get to break, college football weekend,
- 41:03Speaker 3: very saucy. Let's get to getting the Heisman. Who's in
- 41:06Speaker 3: play this weekend? Who's going to make a statement? Pearl,
- 41:08Speaker 3: I'm going to go first. That's a good-looking haircut. All right,
- 41:11Speaker 3: I'm going to go our guy Jaden Ball. He was
- 41:12Speaker 3: on Not So Fast just a couple days ago. He
- 41:14Speaker 3: is the star running back for the University of Florida.
- 41:17Speaker 3: He is now up to fifth in the rankings. Here's
- 41:19Speaker 3: the formula for a running back. Your team has to win,
- 41:22Speaker 3: and you have to run for at least 150 yards
- 41:24Speaker 3: a game.
- 41:24Speaker 4: You've got to get to.
- 41:25Speaker 3: That 1,600, 1,700, 1,800-yard level to get the invite to
- 41:29Speaker 3: New York City. So Jaden Ball, if you want to
- 41:32Speaker 3: feed him, you're going to have to feed him even
- 41:33Speaker 3: if you're up like 15, 18 points in the fourth quarter.
- 41:36Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, he's a fantastic running back. The days
- 41:39Speaker 2: of Rashawn Salaam and Curtis. Actually, Curtis Edis did not
- 41:42Speaker 2: win it, but it used to be a running back award.
- 41:44Speaker 2: Now it's obviously quarterback and wide receiver, which is where
- 41:47Speaker 2: I'm going. Okay, Jeremiah Smith is everyone's darling for the
- 41:50Speaker 2: Heisman right now, but he plays Iowa. Iowa just takes
- 41:53Speaker 2: his air out of all games, so I'm not going
- 41:55Speaker 2: to give him too much credit. Malachi Toney, on the
- 41:57Speaker 2: other hand, I believe they play Clemson, right?
- 41:58Speaker 4: Yeah, TV game.
- 41:59Speaker 2: Okay, Clemson let up 600 yards to LSU, who's not
- 42:02Speaker 2: even great on offense. If Malachi Toney wants to, he
- 42:05Speaker 2: could get 300 yards of total offense in this one
- 42:08Speaker 2: game and get back right up to the top of
- 42:10Speaker 2: the office.
- 42:10Speaker 3: Yeah, he could use a showcase game. He started off
- 42:12Speaker 3: week one with a showcase game. Then they played a
- 42:14Speaker 3: couple teams that weren't so good TV-wise. Now you can
- 42:17Speaker 3: take care of Clemson. Clemson has no defense.
- 42:19Speaker 2: That's the right team to have a showcase game against.
- 42:21Speaker 3: I think you're calling your spot there. All right, coming
- 42:23Speaker 3: up next, we have the not-so-fast coming up. We have
- 42:26Speaker 3: a special report on the Case Keenum College Football Hall
- 42:29Speaker 3: of Fame situation and the Monday's headline for Week 4.
- 42:32Speaker 4: Stick around. It's not so fast.
- 42:35Speaker 3: Sunday Night Football returns to Carolina as Bryce Young and
- 42:37Speaker 3: his Panthers host Jared Goff and his Lions in primetime.
- 42:40Speaker 4: Sunday Night Football.
- 42:42Speaker 3: Football Night on NBC and Peacock. Sunday Night is Football Night.
- 42:46Speaker 1: Here we go. Pearl.
- 42:47Speaker 2: Can't wait. Welcome back. Not so fast. I'm Andrew Perloff.
- 42:49Speaker 2: He's Paul Papps. Of course, NBC Sports Now and Peacock.
- 42:53Speaker 2: And every week we do something called Monday's Headlines Today.
- 42:57Speaker 2: And it's really interesting that we talked about Sunday Night
- 42:59Speaker 2: Football because I think that's the direction I'm going. But
- 43:01Speaker 2: why don't you start us off?
- 43:02Speaker 4: I'm going to go that the Rams continue losing and
- 43:05Speaker 4: they lose to the Eagles.
- 43:06Speaker 3: Eagles got kind of embarrassed on Monday Night Football. They're
- 43:10Speaker 3: going to right the ship. It's going to be a battle.
- 43:11Speaker 3: I think it's going to go down to the last
- 43:13Speaker 3: possession and the Eagles win, and it'll be a referendum
- 43:15Speaker 3: Monday on the Rams.
- 43:16Speaker 4: What happened to the super team?
- 43:18Speaker 2: Oh, man, it's interesting. The dream team scenario seems like
- 43:21Speaker 2: a distant memory. Okay, I'm going to stay on Sunday
- 43:23Speaker 2: Night Football. I know there are major games, but I
- 43:26Speaker 2: think we are going to see an offensive explosion, much
- 43:29Speaker 2: like that Patrick Mahomes-Jared Goff game several years ago. because
- 43:32Speaker 2: Carolina lost its two starting cornerbacks who are awesome, J.C.
- 43:35Speaker 2: Horn and Michael Jackson. So they're in trouble on defense.
- 43:39Speaker 2: I think we're seeing teams running up and down. And
- 43:40Speaker 2: the guy we're talking about Monday morning is Jameer Gibbs.
- 43:44Speaker 2: He's a highlight machine. He's a great dancer after he
- 43:46Speaker 2: gets in the end zone. And I'm not saying he's
- 43:49Speaker 2: an MVP, but he's definitely an Offensive Player of the
- 43:51Speaker 2: Year candidate. So far, with no David Montgomery, they've been
- 43:54Speaker 2: feeding him the ball, and he's been taking advantage.
- 43:56Speaker 4: Yeah, it's a good point.
- 43:56Speaker 3: They don't have the shared backfield anymore. He's got the
- 43:59Speaker 3: new contract. He gets almost every touch at the running
- 44:01Speaker 3: back position.
- 44:02Speaker 4: Very slippery.
- 44:03Speaker 3: He hasn't had that game this year where it's like
- 44:05Speaker 3: that statement Kenneth Walker game, the B.
- 44:07Speaker 4: John Robinson game. This is his week.
- 44:09Speaker 2: Well, the funny thing is he's run for as many
- 44:10Speaker 2: yards as both of those guys, but he hasn't gotten
- 44:12Speaker 2: the attention. I think he's going to go to town here.
- 44:14Speaker 4: I think he clicked his heels together on that one.
- 44:16Speaker 2: All right.
- 44:16Speaker 4: Let's get to the weekend. Keep it friendly. We have
- 44:18Speaker 4: a little side bets, actual money. Where do you want
- 44:21Speaker 4: to start?
- 44:21Speaker 3: I'm going to start Chiefs giving four and a half
- 44:24Speaker 3: to the Raiders, which you're mixed feelings on the Raiders.
- 44:27Speaker 2: Oh, this is when the Raiders' dream dies. Kansas City,
- 44:31Speaker 2: you never know where you're going to get with this
- 44:32Speaker 2: era of Patrick Mahomes. But I think Vegas has been
- 44:35Speaker 2: playing way over their head. And I'm sorry, with all
- 44:38Speaker 2: the attention here on this particular game, I don't know,
- 44:41Speaker 2: I assume we'll have a Taylor Swift sighting. I think
- 44:43Speaker 2: the Chiefs are going to be fired up and the
- 44:45Speaker 2: Raiders cannot compete.
- 44:46Speaker 3: I'm taking the Raiders straight up, money line, because I
- 44:48Speaker 3: think that this goes a little bit longer.
- 44:50Speaker 4: It's a feel-good story. I think they're, and J.J.
- 44:52Speaker 3: Watt was on Dan Patrick's show earlier and talked about
- 44:54Speaker 3: how good their defense was.
- 44:56Speaker 4: I didn't see how good they were.
- 44:57Speaker 3: If they can get the running game going to help
- 44:59Speaker 3: Kirk Cousins out, I think they have something. Next game,
- 45:01Speaker 3: Cowboys at Texans. Texans giving three to the Cowboys.
- 45:04Speaker 2: For me, this is a desperation game. Both teams are desperate,
- 45:07Speaker 2: but Houston is particularly desperate. Now, the Cowboys' offenses look fantastic,
- 45:12Speaker 2: and the Texans' defense gave up 36 to Josh Allen.
- 45:15Speaker 2: I think the Texans play with their hair on fire
- 45:17Speaker 2: in this game. Not literally. Well, we'll see. It's going
- 45:21Speaker 2: to be hot there in Houston. I think they play
- 45:24Speaker 2: with their hair on fire, and I think D'Amico Ryans
- 45:26Speaker 2: is a good coach. They're way too good a team
- 45:28Speaker 2: to be 0-4. That's my only logic here. I know
- 45:30Speaker 2: that doesn't make sense from an X's and O's standpoint,
- 45:33Speaker 2: but you know that incentive is important.
- 45:35Speaker 4: College football, Ohio State at Iowa.
- 45:38Speaker 3: Game day is going to be there. Iowa's getting 14.5.
- 45:41Speaker 3: I wouldn't touch this game. I would either take Iowa
- 45:43Speaker 3: to win. or lose by 28. That's one of those
- 45:46Speaker 3: two things they have. Iowa wins at the buzzer, or
- 45:48Speaker 3: loses by 28.
- 45:49Speaker 2: See, that 14-point spread says to me this game is
- 45:51Speaker 2: going to be 28-14 with three minutes left. It feels
- 45:55Speaker 2: like they really nailed it with this spread. Iowa will
- 45:58Speaker 2: slow down the game, so you're not going to see
- 45:59Speaker 2: Ohio State run up and down the field, but that's
- 46:02Speaker 2: a tough task for Iowa, especially coming off that big win.
- 46:05Speaker 2: I don't see it happening.
- 46:06Speaker 4: Big game for Florida, minus 5.5 at Mizzou. They keep
- 46:09Speaker 4: it going, Florida? No problem.
- 46:10Speaker 2: Well, emotional letdown. I'm really worried about that. Trap game? Oh,
- 46:13Speaker 2: I'm Big time picking Missouri. Like Florida, you know, Florida,
- 46:18Speaker 2: their star player, Jaden Ball, gets on not so fast,
- 46:20Speaker 2: gets a big head. You know how that works.
- 46:22Speaker 3: Yeah, the media coverage he got from being on our
- 46:23Speaker 3: show surely will go to his head. It's time for
- 46:26Speaker 3: constructive criticism. What you had to say, special edition of
- 46:29Speaker 3: constructive criticism. Yesterday on the show, we reported that Case Keenum,
- 46:33Speaker 3: backup quarterback for the Bears, when he was at Houston,
- 46:37Speaker 3: threw for 20,000 yards. He is not in the College
- 46:39Speaker 3: Football Hall of Fame. We got a response from Case Keenum.
- 46:42Speaker 3: Case Keenum loves we went to bat for him.
- 46:44Speaker 4: Now, here's the story.
- 46:45Speaker 3: Case Keenum, because he was not All-American, is not eligible
- 46:49Speaker 3: for the College Football Hall of Fame. The College Football
- 46:52Speaker 3: Hall of Fame is run by NFF, the National Football Foundation.
- 46:55Speaker 3: I reached out to their people, and they said, while
- 46:58Speaker 3: we deeply respect Case Keenum's accomplishments, he is not a
- 47:01Speaker 3: first team or was not a first team All-American by
- 47:04Speaker 3: an NCAA-recognized publication. Therefore, he is not and will not
- 47:07Speaker 3: be eligible for the College Football Hall of Fame going forward.
- 47:10Speaker 3: They're not going to wink at this. They're not going
- 47:11Speaker 3: to have a special vote. Case Keenum, as we know now,
- 47:14Speaker 3: will not be getting in the College Football Hall of Fame.
- 47:16Speaker 2: Well, I don't know how deeply they do respect Case
- 47:18Speaker 2: Keenum if they're not willing to make an exception for
- 47:20Speaker 2: the all-time leading passer in college football history.
- 47:23Speaker 4: So here's my comp on this one.
- 47:24Speaker 3: Let's say the NFL had a similar rule where if
- 47:27Speaker 3: you weren't first-team All-Pro, you couldn't be in the Hall
- 47:29Speaker 3: of Fame. Here are some quarterbacks that would not be
- 47:31Speaker 3: in the Hall of Fame. John Elway, Warren Moon, Troy Aikman,
- 47:35Speaker 3: and Roger Straubach, never first-team All-Pro. Some never All-Pro at
- 47:38Speaker 3: all and would not be eligible.
- 47:40Speaker 2: Wow. I mean, Troy Aikman probably shouldn't be in anyway
- 47:43Speaker 2: as an Eagles fan. No, I'm kidding. Of course, Troy's
- 47:45Speaker 2: a Hall of Famer.
- 47:46Speaker 3: Good luck to that with the Cowboys fans all weekend, Pearl.
- 47:48Speaker 2: By the way, if Case does get in, we are
- 47:51Speaker 2: in the front row.
- 47:52Speaker 3: Oh, we're presenting him. It's time for the feel-good before
- 47:54Speaker 3: we wrap up this great week. Thanks to everybody at
- 47:56Speaker 3: Not So Fast in the building for doing a bang-up job.
- 47:59Speaker 4: Really good job all week.
- 48:00Speaker 3: Dickinson College. I don't know where they are, but they
- 48:03Speaker 3: go around the campus. They're kickers and long snappers, and
- 48:06Speaker 3: they let the kids kick. to get them pumped up
- 48:08Speaker 3: for tonight's games against Johns Hopkins, the fighting anesthesiologist of
- 48:12Speaker 3: Johns Hopkins against Dickinson.
- 48:14Speaker 4: Where is Dickinson College, Perloff?
- 48:17Speaker 2: I said Pennsylvania. What do you think?
- 48:20Speaker 3: I'm going to go Delaware because I really, really don't know,
- 48:23Speaker 3: and I know even.
- 48:24Speaker 4: Less about the state of Delaware. This is good TV,
- 48:25Speaker 4: by the way.
- 48:28Speaker 2: Are we going to get an answer?
- 48:30Speaker 4: It is in Pennsylvania.
- 48:31Speaker 2: Oh, okay.
- 48:31Speaker 4: Good for you.
- 48:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, listen. Throw out the record books when
- 48:34Speaker 2: Dickinson and Johns Hopkins get together.
- 48:36Speaker 4: Is this going to catch on running around campus getting
- 48:38Speaker 4: kids to kick?
- 48:39Speaker 2: We should run around the man cave and have people kick.
- 48:41Speaker 3: I'd pull a hammy like Caleb Williams. Tune in to
- 48:44Speaker 3: the Dan Patrick Show on Monday and the Not So
- 48:46Speaker 3: Fast right after.
- 48:46Speaker 4: Have a good weekend. Enjoy the football.
