- 0:00OK, in light of the technical difficulties we've had already,
- 0:03I just want to take a moment to pray against any others and get
- 0:07our hearts ready for the Word. Would you join me one more time
- 0:09as we pray? Lord, we are grateful to worship
- 0:12you. We are grateful to be here and
- 0:17we just ask for all distractions, everything that
- 0:21could pull our attention and our eyes and our hearts away from
- 0:26hearing what you have to say to us in your word.
- 0:28I pray God that you would shield us from it and that God wherever
- 0:36wherever we find ourselves in our journey with Jesus today
- 0:38here God that we would be able to listen to what you have said
- 0:43in a book we call the Bible a book you have given us a book
- 0:47that you wrote so that we could know who you are.
- 0:50It is yourself revelation to us so we could have hope, we could
- 0:56be covered, we could be changed. And I pray God, you would change
- 1:02us today. That you'd bring heat where
- 1:04hearts have grown cold, you'd bring light where minds have
- 1:06grown dark. God, would you speak to us today
- 1:08in Jesus name? Amen.
- 1:11Amen, Lord. Yes.
- 1:12Protect the screen, protect the microphone, and make sure no
- 1:15chairs get broken or nothing like that to God while you're at
- 1:18it, You know what I'm saying? Hey, we're going to be in Joshua
- 1:20chapter 23. That's page 197 of the Bibles in
- 1:24front of you. If you don't have a Bible,
- 1:25consider that your Bible. Now you can have a Bible.
- 1:28It's just on the one and the seat in front of you.
- 1:30Please generally take that and take that home with you.
- 1:32We'd love for you to have a copy of God's work.
- 1:34That's what we're talking about today is how to be loyal to
- 1:38God's words. We've been in this book of
- 1:40Joshua written by the title character Joshua, describing
- 1:44what happened for as the Israelites left Egypt and
- 1:49wandered the desert, how they crossed the Jordan River and
- 1:51took hold of the promised land known as Canaan.
- 1:55And for 23 chapters, we have been all around this theme of
- 1:59land and victory and conquest. That's what the book of Joshua's
- 2:02about. It's in your Bible with the
- 2:04theme of land. But the book has an aim point.
- 2:09It actually has a target that it wants to hit in your heart, in
- 2:13my heart, in any heart. Who would read it?
- 2:15And it's not just about land and victory.
- 2:17The aim of Joshua is your loyalty, your allegiance, our
- 2:25commitment to God, that as we read about people and nations
- 2:31rising and falling in the Israelites marching forward, the
- 2:34response in the reader supposed to be, Oh my gosh, I need to be
- 2:38loyal to this God and to what he says because without it I am
- 2:43hopeless. Without it, I am a fool.
- 2:47Joshua's helping us see that our aim point needs to be loyalty,
- 2:51and we're good at loyalty. When I was growing up, my
- 2:54friend, his dad worked for Gatorade and he had like what I
- 2:58would call the coolest job in the world.
- 2:59Preston mentioned the salt director, which is a close
- 3:01second, but this is first. He worked for Gatorade in the
- 3:0590s and his job was to present the Gatorade High School Athlete
- 3:10of the Year. He would go and give them that
- 3:11award. So Gatorade would put him on a
- 3:13plane and he'd go and fly and he'd meet this young kid from
- 3:16Wilmette, Wilmington, NC, named Michael Jordan.
- 3:19Yeah, he, he met Michael Jordan in the 80s and 90s.
- 3:21Like, hey, why don't I give you this?
- 3:23In the 90s, he got to meet Tiger Woods, Peyton Manning.
- 3:26And this is my best friend's dad.
- 3:28And I see pictures on the wall. I'm like, who are you?
- 3:32Who are you? And and what what job is this
- 3:34that you get to go parade around with athletes?
- 3:36What would that meant, though, being a Gatorade worker, is that
- 3:38he had to be loyal to Gatorade. So at times we'd go to
- 3:41restaurants and he would go to go get a Powerade.
- 3:46Like somebody would go get it. He'd go absolutely not, not, not
- 3:48what I'm paying for dinner tonight.
- 3:49We are not having Powerade. You'd go to their basement
- 3:51fridge. Yeah.
- 3:52Basements are a thing in Illinois.
- 3:53You'd get there. And in their basement fridge,
- 3:56there'd be no such thing as any Coke products of any kind
- 3:59because Gatorade was owned by Pepsi.
- 4:01So there'd be copious amounts of Gatorade.
- 4:04No Coke, just Pepsi. I prayed for them on the on the
- 4:06soda department because Pepsi's definitely inferior.
- 4:09Sorry if you work for PepsiCo and you're here today, but the
- 4:13reality was, is that his allegiance was to Gatorade.
- 4:16His loyalty was to Gatorade. He was going to be committed to
- 4:19Gatorade even it meant he didn't get to have a refreshing energy
- 4:22drink at the at the gas station or at the ball field that their
- 4:26family adopted loyalty to a drink.
- 4:32Now, loyalty to a drink is one thing, but what God is asking of
- 4:35us, what He's inviting us to really today is loyalty to the
- 4:39living water of God's Word, the nourishment and the joy and the
- 4:45energy and the vitality that comes from drinking from God's
- 4:52words. Now, obviously, I'm speaking
- 4:56metaphorically, not literally here.
- 4:58There's no literal drinking of God's words.
- 5:01However, I believe that is our invitation that Joshua 23 is in
- 5:07our Bible so that we could see how to be loyal to God's words.
- 5:14We're in Joshua 23, verse one. I want to show it to you in
- 5:16three ways today, how to be loyal to God's words.
- 5:20It says this a long time afterward, meaning a long time
- 5:23after chapter 22, a long time after the half tribe of Manassas
- 5:27and the other two tribes east of the Jordan River, after that
- 5:29whole conflict thing where they're departed but united.
- 5:32After that whole thing happened that we learned about last week.
- 5:34After that happened, a long time afterward and indefinite time
- 5:37later, when the Lord had given rest to Israel from all their
- 5:41surrounding enemies, and Joshua was old and well advanced in
- 5:44years, Joshua summoned all of Israel, its elders and heads,
- 5:49its judges and officers. And he said to the leadership, I
- 5:52am now old and well advanced in years, and you have seen all of
- 5:56the Lord your God has done to all these nations for your sake.
- 6:01For it is the Lord your God who has fought for you.
- 6:04Behold, I have allotted to you as an inheritance for your
- 6:07tribes, those nations that remain, along with all the
- 6:09nations that I've already cut off from the Jordan to the great
- 6:12sea in the West, the Mediterranean.
- 6:15The Lord your God will push them back before you and drive them
- 6:18out of your sight, and you shall possess their land, just as the
- 6:23Lord your God promised you. Therefore, be strong to keep and
- 6:28to do all that is written in the book of the law of Moses,
- 6:32turning aside from it neither to the right hand nor to the left.
- 6:36How are we going to be loyal to God's words with these 6 verses?
- 6:38I want to summarize it like this in an application point saying
- 6:42it has defined loyalty as God does.
- 6:48How are you going to be loyal? Well, you have to at least
- 6:49understand you have to define loyalty as God defines loyalty
- 6:53because we might have misdefinitions of loyalty, we
- 6:55might misunderstand loyalty, and we might think we're being loyal
- 6:59to God's words, but God actually has a way that He describes
- 7:04loyalty to us right here in these 6 verses I think are
- 7:06really helpful. Jot down this definition.
- 7:08You'd like to take notes that loyalty is believing in God's
- 7:12words to the point of keeping all of his words.
- 7:17It's not just believing in them as a concept.
- 7:19It's not just saying like, hey, that's a good book, He was a
- 7:23good teacher. It's believing them to the point
- 7:26of keeping God's words or another word for that is obeying
- 7:30God's words. We believe in God's words to the
- 7:34point of keeping all of his words, keeping every single word
- 7:38that he has said. John 1415 says this, that if you
- 7:42love me, you will keep my commandments.
- 7:45Later in that same chapter John writes in verse 21, Whoever has
- 7:49my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me.
- 7:54John 1510 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in
- 7:58my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide
- 8:03in His love. Keeping God's commands are a big
- 8:08deal because God keeps God's commands that there isn't a
- 8:16single promise he has overlooked.
- 8:18There's not a single command that is undone that everything
- 8:21that God says gets done. And Joshua, he is old in his age
- 8:26here. Look back at verse one and
- 8:28Joshua was old and well advanced in years.
- 8:30We learned in the next chapter he's about 110.
- 8:33Is that old? Yes.
- 8:36Say turn your neighbor and say real old.
- 8:39Yeah. I'm not trying to live to 111.
- 8:41If I'm 110, right, He's 110. He's like, hey, I'm going to
- 8:44tell you guys something obvious right now.
- 8:45I am really old and well advanced in years.
- 8:48And he's going to get all the leaders like, hey, I want to
- 8:50give you like, a deathbed speech right now.
- 8:52I want to tell you what I've learned over the course of my
- 8:54life. And these are his last words to
- 8:57the people of Israel after being their leader for a number of
- 9:00years. He's like, hey, here's something
- 9:01very important I need to leave you with.
- 9:04And so in this farewell speech, here's what he starts with.
- 9:06He says, and you have seen all of the Lord your God has done to
- 9:11all these nations for your sake, for it is the Lord your God who
- 9:15has fought for you. What's Joshua saying is that
- 9:19loyalty to God, that according to God, loyalty is doing what
- 9:24you said you would do, doing what is asked of you.
- 9:28Remember, Joshua's a war hero at this point.
- 9:30He actually has a good grid for what it looks like to have a
- 9:33command and to go obey a command.
- 9:36And so God has given him commands and he's done the
- 9:38commands. And guess what?
- 9:39He's watched God win. He's watched them God fight for
- 9:43them. He is basing our definition of
- 9:45loyalty off of who God is and how he is defined.
- 9:48Loyalty, it's doing. It's not just believing the
- 9:51words, it's doing and keeping the words you said The Lord our
- 9:57God is loyal to his words. Not even one has been
- 10:01overlooked. That every single command God
- 10:06gives, no matter how insignificant it might seem, is
- 10:08a significant one, no matter how much you might disagree with it,
- 10:13is a good one. So loyalty to His words has to
- 10:16start with understanding what loyalty is according to God.
- 10:20Loyalty to God is not like how many of us follow sports.
- 10:27Some of us follow sports, and this is OK in the realm of
- 10:29sports, but stick with me here. Loyalty for many of you to
- 10:33sports is what I would call a bandwagon sports fan.
- 10:37That is not the way I operate with sports.
- 10:39I just need you to know that there's no such thing as picking
- 10:42A-Team for like a year then jumping to another team like
- 10:45you. It's like a wife.
- 10:46You get one team per life per sport.
- 10:48OK? Like that's how I think about
- 10:50sports, that you don't just get to jump.
- 10:52There's no bandwagoning. There's a loyalty.
- 10:55You have to be in the suffering like when the Bears win the
- 10:57Super Bowl one day, hopefully next year when when that
- 11:00happens, guess what? I have suffered for the sake of
- 11:03the Chicago Bears. I have endured, I have cried.
- 11:07I've done all kinds of because that's what a die hard fan would
- 11:10do. And I think some of us were like
- 11:12here today and we're we're hearing people like talk about
- 11:15God and we're and we look at like religious people, like man,
- 11:18they are so intense about following Jesus.
- 11:20There's so intense about the Bible.
- 11:25What if I told you that's actually how it's supposed to
- 11:27look like that it's not meant to be a casual fanship.
- 11:32It's most meant to be a loyal followership.
- 11:35A die hard nature to giving your life to God.
- 11:41A fan fits the Bible into their life and a loyal follower gives
- 11:47their life to the Bible. If the Bible is just like, it
- 11:54just kind of fits into your life, you you might put it in a
- 11:57bio on a social media, you might have read it once or twice, but
- 12:00it is not the orientation of your life.
- 12:03Your life isn't arranged around God's words.
- 12:06Listen to me. You're missing the point of why
- 12:07it was given to you. It was given to you as a gift,
- 12:11so you could know what God has said, you could know who He is,
- 12:13you could know what He's done for you, and you could believe
- 12:16His promises, just as the Israelites did.
- 12:23We cannot treat God's commands as optional to obey.
- 12:29We give our life to his words because he's demonstrated that
- 12:33his words are good words. They're words for our good.
- 12:38They're words for our pleasure, our delight.
- 12:40They are good words for you. And so when he says to flee
- 12:46sexual immorality, to run from it, to flee from all that he
- 12:50calls sexually immoral, that's not overrated.
- 12:54When God says do not be drunk, it's not.
- 12:57The next time, I'll take it easy.
- 13:01Because we're loyal to his words, because we defined what
- 13:03his words mean. We define what loyalty means.
- 13:05It's keeping his words, what he's asked of us.
- 13:08When the Bible says, this one caught me this week.
- 13:10Do all things without grumbling and complaining.
- 13:17Ouch is right. Ouch is right.
- 13:23We define loyalty as God does. We see it as God sees it.
- 13:27And guess what? It gives us a heart to keep his
- 13:30words. And we won't do this perfectly.
- 13:32We will do this progressively. We'll never get to the point
- 13:35where we perfectly obey all God's words.
- 13:36Thanks be to God for Jesus, who kept every word God has given
- 13:40him so that we don't have to keep it perfectly.
- 13:43But guess what? We will do it increasingly.
- 13:45We will be increasingly loyal to God's words because we've
- 13:49defined it as God defines it. We will see like how Joshua did
- 13:53that. We could be like verse 6.
- 13:55We would be very strong to keep and to do all that is written.
- 14:00Now up until this point, the Canon of scripture, the the book
- 14:03itself was just Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and
- 14:06Deuteronomy. So he's saying, hey, go, go,
- 14:09obey all that God has written, but guess what?
- 14:10He's written a little bit more for us now and it's closed.
- 14:13This is this is the Canon that we have.
- 14:15This is what we're intended to follow.
- 14:17But maybe this week you would search, you would search and you
- 14:20would ask and you go, hey, what is God asking me to do?
- 14:22What's the next step of obedience he's asked me to take?
- 14:26And I think if you want to be like Jesus, you want to be
- 14:28conformed to the image of his Son.
- 14:30If you want to be like God in that way, guess what?
- 14:33You're going to be a person who's faithful, who's loyal in
- 14:36keeping what God has said to do. That's the first thing.
- 14:40The second thing, if we're going to be loyal, and this is the big
- 14:43point, this is where I think the text is really centering.
- 14:45It's the emphasis of what, chapter 23?
- 14:48It's this idea that we're going to cling to God's words like our
- 14:51life depends upon it. We're going to cling.
- 14:55We're not just going to keep and define God's word as God defines
- 14:58loyalty. We are going to cling to God's
- 15:01words like our very lives depend upon it.
- 15:04Like if I were to throw you into the Mission Impossible scenario
- 15:07where the clock is ticking and the bomb is going and one of the
- 15:10characters is talking you through how to defuse the bomb,
- 15:12how would you hang upon every syllable that they said in
- 15:16defusing the bomb? Cut the red wire or the green
- 15:20wire? Oh, the red wire.
- 15:21OK, double checking the red wire.
- 15:22Yes, the red wire. OK, we're gonna cut the red wire
- 15:23now. That's how serious clinging to
- 15:29God's words is. This word that we're going to
- 15:31find together in this section of the text.
- 15:33This word clinging, it's the idea of gluing your ear to the
- 15:37word of God. It's sticky.
- 15:39It's Velcro. It's binding.
- 15:43Look at what the Bible says in verse 7.
- 15:47We're turning aside from it, neither to the right hand or to
- 15:49the left, but that you may not mix with these nations,
- 15:53underline that. We're going to come back to that
- 15:54in a second, remaining among you, or make mention of the
- 15:57names of their gods, or swear by them, or serve them, or bow down
- 16:01to them. But you shall cling to the Lord
- 16:07your God, just as you have done to this day.
- 16:12One man of you puts to flight 1000, since it is the Lord your
- 16:17God who fights for you, just as he promised you.
- 16:21Be very careful, therefore, to love the Lord your God.
- 16:25For if you turn back and cling to the remnants of these
- 16:28nations, there's that word again remaining among you and make
- 16:31marriage with them. So if you associate with them
- 16:33and they with, you know for certain that the Lord your God
- 16:36will no longer drive out these nations before you, that
- 16:39there'll be a snare and a trap for you, a whip on your sides
- 16:42and thorns in your eyes until you perish from off this good
- 16:44ground that the Lord your God has given you.
- 16:47Do you see the situation here? The severity that, that right
- 16:54now they're, they are clinging to God.
- 16:56So God is fighting for them. But there will be a moment where
- 16:58if you are not clinging to God, He stopped fighting for you.
- 17:02That in pride you oppose the God of the universe himself.
- 17:07And so he's asking us. He's calling us to clinging to
- 17:11the very words of God. Clinging is interesting to me.
- 17:15It that word cling, It's the same word used in Genesis
- 17:18chapter 2 and it says a man shall leave his wife and mother
- 17:22and cling to his wife, that he should leave his father and
- 17:25mother. Excuse me, I said wife and
- 17:26mother. That's weird.
- 17:28Father and mother and cling to his wife that it's that same
- 17:33word. It's that level of covenant,
- 17:34that level of promise, that level of relationship that we're
- 17:37clinging to one another. We are clinging to God's words
- 17:41like in a marriage and clinging is for a party of 2, not for a
- 17:46party of three. We do not mix.
- 17:49Do you see that verb in your Bible there?
- 17:52Look back at verse 7 that you may not mix with these nations
- 17:57that God takes seriously who we marry for this reason, because
- 18:00the person that you share a bed with is the person you share the
- 18:02most beliefs with. The person you share a bed with
- 18:06is the person you're going to raise kids with.
- 18:07The person you share a bed with is a big deal to God.
- 18:10That is because it's going to inform your perception of who
- 18:12God is. And so he doesn't want the
- 18:15Israelites to not marry because of they're from another nation
- 18:17or anything like that. It's because of their beliefs
- 18:21that they're going to worship idols and they're going to make
- 18:24them, serve them and bow to them and listen to them and live for
- 18:27them. And God knows that that is the
- 18:30way of destruction. It'll destroy your life.
- 18:33So he says, hey, do not go marry these other nations.
- 18:37Do not mix with them like this. He echoes it in the New
- 18:40Testament that as a believer, we are not to marry an unbeliever.
- 18:44In fact, listen to me, college students and single people in
- 18:47the room do not if you are a Christian, do not marry an
- 18:50unbeliever that bluntly, I'm going to say it.
- 18:54Do not do it. Do not start dating an
- 18:56unbeliever. Do not start considering
- 18:58marriage an unbeliever that God would call that foolishness.
- 19:05They will steer you towards idols, and idols are things they
- 19:11get. They're good things that often
- 19:12we make God things. And they have ears but can't
- 19:15hear you. They have eyes but can't see
- 19:18you, hands but can't help you, feet but can't walk with you.
- 19:24Why would you turn to them? And if God is a thing you're
- 19:28clinging to most in this world, why would you cling to someone
- 19:31else who's not going to help you cling to Him?
- 19:35Because we need to cling to Him and His words like our lives
- 19:39depend upon it. Clinging is for a party 2, not a
- 19:43party 3. Clinging is also not weird.
- 19:45It's wonderful. Here's what I mean by that
- 19:48clinging. I think some of us think of like
- 19:50the Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn movie with the stage 5 clinger.
- 19:52When we hear that term, we, we think of people who are overly
- 19:56attached. We think of people who are like,
- 19:59wow, there's they're a clinger. They're sticking to me a little
- 20:04too much. They're the, I can't get rid of
- 20:06them. They are a little bit too much
- 20:08to deal with. Clinging has a bad connotation
- 20:12because of over attachment. But listen to me, you can't
- 20:15overly attached to God. You can't it's actually
- 20:19impossible. He's the best thing for your
- 20:20life. The closer you are to him the
- 20:21better you are that the nearer you are to him the better your
- 20:24life goes. But we can detach from God.
- 20:31We call this self-reliance or independence.
- 20:33Like, INDEPENDNT, like independent DJ Khaled would be
- 20:37the best. Like we think to ourselves, man,
- 20:43I would just be better if I wasn't clinging to God, if I had
- 20:46no one to cling to. And that's where it gives.
- 20:50The third thing, clinging is not optional.
- 20:53You are going to cling to something.
- 20:55You're like, yeah, I'm not clinging to God like you're
- 20:57talking about, Brandon. I'm not, like, married to God in
- 20:59this way. I'm not taking him serious
- 21:01enough. Sure, but I don't know that I
- 21:03have to because I'm not clinging to anything else.
- 21:06Incorrect. Look back at the Bible with me,
- 21:10verse 8. But you shall cling the Lord
- 21:14your God, just as you've done to this day.
- 21:16For the Lord your God is driven out before you.
- 21:17Great and strong nations. Jump down to verse 12.
- 21:21For if you turn back and cling to the remnant of these nations
- 21:25remaining among you, and make marriages with them, verse 13,
- 21:29know for certain that the Lord your God will no longer drive
- 21:32these nations out from you. What's the text implying here?
- 21:36That verb is used again for a reason.
- 21:38It wants you to see that clinging is not optional.
- 21:41You will cling to the remnant or you will cling to the Redeemer.
- 21:45You will cling to something. Your heart was made to worship.
- 21:48It was made to attach. And so you will find something
- 21:51to attach to. It might be someone or
- 21:53something. The something might be status,
- 21:56it might be wealth, it might be your work, it might be a
- 21:59relationship, it might be something, but you will find
- 22:02something to attach to. And God is saying, don't cling
- 22:05to that, don't attach to that, don't glue yourself to that.
- 22:10It leads you to a place you don't want to go.
- 22:14Hurt and heartache, devastation and brokenness.
- 22:22The only hope we have is clinging to God and His words.
- 22:27That independence from God has a cost.
- 22:31So I would just ask you today, like where in your life, because
- 22:35you're evaluating your own leadership of your life.
- 22:37When you've self LED, you haven't appealed to God's words
- 22:39to lead you. You haven't appealed the sound
- 22:41counsel to lead you. Like where has that gotten you?
- 22:43When you've just listened to your own heart and your own
- 22:45mind, has it gotten you to good faces and places?
- 22:54My bet is, is that the more you look at your life and the more
- 22:58you look at leadership decisions you made for your own life.
- 23:01And if you kept that pattern up, it would get you to a bad spot.
- 23:10I was listening to comedian talk about this.
- 23:11He said, man, I'm a bad leader of my own life.
- 23:15I think I'm wise. I think I'm smart.
- 23:17And then I make a decision and it blows up in my face.
- 23:23That's what independence gets. You cling to the words of God
- 23:28like your life depends on it. What do you cling to besides
- 23:31Jesus? What is the thing that you cling
- 23:34to, that you hold tightly, that you've glued yourself to, that
- 23:41you're known for? Part of loyalty to God's words
- 23:45is being known as a person who clings to them like our life
- 23:50depends on it. So when you are clinging to God
- 23:57like your life depends on it, why is it then that you're
- 24:01clinging to Him? Search your heart.
- 24:05When you do cling to God, it's because a crisis hit.
- 24:07Is it because things aren't going your way?
- 24:09It's because your comfort got rocked a bit.
- 24:12That's a gift from God to help you cling to Him.
- 24:15Good preaching and. When you're not clinging to God,
- 24:22why not? What is it that you're looking
- 24:26for? We need to cling to God's words
- 24:31like our life depends on them. Third and finally, Joshua is
- 24:36going to help us see that if we don't cling to God's Word,
- 24:38there's a warning that if we don't cling to them, if we don't
- 24:45keep them, if we abandoned them, we will watch everything fall
- 24:49apart. How to be loyal to God's words?
- 24:53It's not abandoning them. It's not putting them on the
- 24:57shelf. It's not putting them as a part
- 25:02of our life, it's giving our life to his words.
- 25:09Verse 14 and now about to go the way of all the earth.
- 25:13I'm 110. I'm a geezer.
- 25:15I'm ready to die. And you know in your hearts and
- 25:18souls, all of you, that not one word has failed.
- 25:23Of all the good things that the Lord your God has promised
- 25:27concerning you, not even 1.1 drop one iota.
- 25:34Not a single promise of God has failed the Israelites.
- 25:39He's wiped out and given them the good ground He promised
- 25:43them. He's beaten walls and warriors.
- 25:47There's nothing that can stand against him.
- 25:50Not one of the promises of God has failed concerning you.
- 25:53All have come to pass for you. Not one of them has failed.
- 25:58But just look at verse 15. Just as all the good things that
- 26:02the Lord God has promised concerning you have been
- 26:04fulfilled, watch this, so the Lord will bring upon you all the
- 26:09evil things until He has destroyed you from off this good
- 26:12land of the Lord God has given you.
- 26:13If here's the condition, if you transgress the covenant of the
- 26:18Lord your God which commanded you, and serve other gods and
- 26:20bow down to them. Then God's anger will.
- 26:24Be kindled against you, and you shall perish quickly from off
- 26:28the good land that He has given to you.
- 26:31This too. Is a promise from God.
- 26:35A sobering. 1A Heavy one, but a real one.
- 26:39It would be unloving of me to not tell you about this other
- 26:42promise that if we transgress, if we sin against God, guess
- 26:46what? Destruction would come, death
- 26:53would come, the anger of God against sin, the justice of God
- 26:57against sin would come. But listen to me.
- 27:01The love of God has revealed something better.
- 27:05Joshua's in the front of your Bible because it's foreshadowing
- 27:07for us, the coming Messiah, Jesus Christ, that Jesus name,
- 27:10Yeshua. It's it's another version of the
- 27:13name Joshua. And so this chapter is saying,
- 27:16Hey, here's the what of his warning.
- 27:18We need to keep God's words the where of his warning?
- 27:21Like where do we need to keep God's words everywhere.
- 27:23Why do we need to keep God's words?
- 27:25Because we're going to cling to God's words always.
- 27:26We're going to cling to something else and we cling to
- 27:28something else. It's going to lead us to a place
- 27:30we don't want to go. And if we are clinging to God
- 27:32everywhere, keeping his words, then when do we need to do that?
- 27:36He's saying right now. Because he has a who?
- 27:42For this morning in mind, and it's you and me.
- 27:47That if we abandoned. God's words we will watch
- 27:50everything fall apart. The next book in your Bible is a
- 27:54book called Judges. And judges.
- 27:57Chapter 2, verse 10, Here's the next generation.
- 28:00Here's what it says. And there arose another
- 28:02generation who heard this speech from Joshua after them, who did
- 28:08not know the Lord or the work that He had done for Israel.
- 28:13That it can go that. Quick that this generation can
- 28:16know God, and the next generation can miss the mark
- 28:18entirely. They don't even know who God is.
- 28:20It can happen that quick. And the reason that happens is
- 28:24because our loyalty to God's words can come to an abrupt halt
- 28:28in our life. We can stop being loyal in an
- 28:31instant. We can abandoned them.
- 28:38And watch everything fall apart. The book of Judges is a warning
- 28:41for all of us, saying, hey, if you abandoned God's word, here's
- 28:43what's going to happen. Everyone's going to do what's
- 28:45right in their own eyes. Meaning there is.
- 28:48No definition of truth, there's no definition of justice,
- 28:52there's no definition of right and wrong.
- 28:56There's just anarchy and chaos. Sounds a little bit like 2026 in
- 29:02some ways. That's what's going to happen.
- 29:08If we don't keep God's words, it's going to happen for our
- 29:11kids in the world that we're building for them.
- 29:13If we do not bow to the Word, if we abandoned God's words for
- 29:19other words, listen to me, that's what's going to happen.
- 29:24And I don't want that. World I don't want to raise my
- 29:26kids in a world that where people bow to the world instead
- 29:29of the word. That that's actually who?
- 29:32We are as a church family that we are a people.
- 29:34Guess what that went? That's why we're bold with the
- 29:36Bible is that when the Word and the world disagree, I'm going to
- 29:40pick what the Bible says. I will not abandon what God has
- 29:45said. You will not abandon what God
- 29:47has said. Why?
- 29:47Because we're people who are loyal to God's words.
- 29:50We're going to explore them. We're going to devour them.
- 29:52We're going to eat them. We're going to chew on them.
- 29:54We are going to read them and learn them and know them.
- 29:57We are going to have people who grow in God's Word together.
- 30:03We won't abandoned. This book ever.
- 30:05And if we do, permission to fire me?
- 30:11It's just the way. Of how God wants us to live our
- 30:15lives. Depend upon it.
- 30:18What I think is interesting. Here in the text, is it, like I
- 30:20said, it is foreshadowing Jesus Christ and Joshua.
- 30:23Here he's saying he's on his deathbed and he's exhibiting
- 30:26loyalty to God's Word so that we could understand that Jesus was
- 30:30loyal onto his deathbed as well. Don't you see the wonder of it?
- 30:35Jesus's loyalty to God's words never faltered.
- 30:39It never failed. His righteousness actually paid
- 30:42for all the times we're going to be disloyal to God's words.
- 30:45You aren't going to keep God's words perfectly.
- 30:47You are going to struggle, you are going to sin, you are going
- 30:50to suffer. You are going to experience all
- 30:52that the fallen world has to give.
- 30:53But guess what? You have a Saviour who is loyal
- 30:55to God perfectly. You have a Christ, you have a
- 30:58Messiah. You have.
- 30:59Good news is that you don't have to be perfectly loyal to God's
- 31:02words because there was somebody who was for you and he went to
- 31:04your place on a cross to die for your sins.
- 31:07He rose again, conquering sin and death forever, all so that
- 31:10you could be counted loyal before God.
- 31:13That even the most disloyal among us, the ones who have
- 31:15sinned the most and been disloyal the most to God, listen
- 31:18to me. You could be called.
- 31:20Loyal. Not because of anything.
- 31:23You've done, but because of what he's done.
- 31:28His. Deathbed was not the end.
- 31:32He's not dead. He's alive.
- 31:35He kept his word again, and on the third day he was raised
- 31:39according to the scriptures. And right now he is ruling and
- 31:42reigning and calling to many of you right now, saying, guess
- 31:45what? Come be loyal to me.
- 31:46Come be loyal to my words. Come, cling to them.
- 31:48Come keep them. Come do them.
- 31:50Because that is the hope of every single human heart.
- 31:54God is calling you. Today he's drawing you in and
- 31:57he's saying, listen to me, cling to me.
- 31:59Stop clinging to your work, Stop clinging to your status.
- 32:03Stop clinging to the words of that podcast and start clinging
- 32:06to my book. Be known as.
- 32:12Being loyal to that above all else, that's one of the best
- 32:15reputations you can have, is a person who is loyal to God's
- 32:21words. That people can guess.
- 32:24What you're going to think about things.
- 32:26Why? Because they know you're loyal
- 32:27to the book. That you've pledged.
- 32:30Allegiance to the King of Kings and Lord of Lords that you
- 32:33committed your way to Christ. You cling to Christ above all
- 32:37else. And that means you won't.
- 32:42Abandoned them because he won't abandoned you.
- 32:48Immanuel Kant, the philosopher, says this, that the existence of
- 32:53the Bible as a book for the people is the greatest benefit
- 32:56which the human race has ever experienced.
- 33:01Every attempt to belittle it is a crime against humanity.
- 33:10Don't belittle your. Bible, pray and ask God for you
- 33:16to crave it. To be faithful.
- 33:19To it to. Find areas where you're.
- 33:21Not obeying and keeping it, He'll show you.
- 33:27My pastor growing up. He would say often when he'd get
- 33:29into the pulpit, he'd say this is my Bible.
- 33:33I am who it says I am, I can do what it says I can do, and I am
- 33:36going where it says I'm going to go.
- 33:40This is my Bible. This is my.
- 33:43Bible, Why don't you? Actually, why don't you grab
- 33:45your Bibles? Whether it's on a phone or on a
- 33:46Bible, let's say it together, This is my Bible.
- 33:51I am who it says I am. I can do what it says I can do.
- 33:57I'm going where? It says I'll go.
- 34:00Let's be loyal to it. Let's pray, Lord, thank you for
- 34:03your book. Thank you that it's a book for
- 34:06us, that it isn't just for us for now, but God is your words
- 34:10that are enduring forever. Then in Psalm 1. 19 You say that
- 34:14the law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul that the
- 34:17testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple, but the
- 34:21precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart, the
- 34:26commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes that the
- 34:30fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever, that the rules
- 34:34of the Lord are true and righteous.
- 34:36Altogether more to be desired are God's words than gold, even
- 34:40much fine gold, sweeter also than honey and the drippings of
- 34:44the honeycomb. Moreover, by them your servant
- 34:46is warned, and keeping them there is great reward.
- 34:52Who can discern their own heirs? God, declare us innocent from
- 34:56our hidden faults. Keep us back from presumptuous
- 35:00sins. Let them not have dominion over
- 35:02us anymore. Then we shall be blameless and
- 35:04innocent of great transgression. Let the words of our mouth and
- 35:08the meditation of our heart be acceptable in your sight, O
- 35:11Lord, my rock and Redeemer. God, will we believe in God's
- 35:15words like that? That if somebody were to offer
- 35:17us a pile of gold or a pot or a pile of Bibles, we take the
- 35:20Bible because we believe in the value in the treasure of it.
- 35:23It would be the thing we cling to, our security and our rest
- 35:28and our joy wouldn't be in our bank accounts or our follower
- 35:31counts, but it would be in the reality that there's a God who
- 35:35has spoken and that he has been loyal to us.
- 35:37He has been faithful to us to give us a book where we can know
- 35:40Him and love him and cherish him.
- 35:43God, would you be our treasure. And would your words.
- 35:49Not just collect dust on our bookshelf, but would we actually
- 35:55cling to them? Like a rock.
- 36:00Climber climbing the side of a wall, free soloing.
- 36:05Would we hold them fast? Hold them strong?
- 36:11God. Would you hold?
- 36:11Us in the meantime. Until that day when we're.
- 36:15Made perfect and perfectly loyal.
- 36:18We'll be faithful. We'll be loyal because you're
- 36:20worth it. So God help us to not just
- 36:22believe that these are your words.
- 36:25But would we keep them? In Jesus name, Amen.
