- 0:00Speaker 1: It is just on half past nine, and look, we've
- 0:03Speaker 1: got so much going on around the place this morning,
- 0:05Speaker 1: we're going to take a bit of a change of
- 0:07Speaker 1: pace because, as I'm sure a lot of you would
- 0:09Speaker 1: be aware, Black Friday sales it seems to be something
- 0:13Speaker 1: that's really sort of come to popularity, I think over
- 0:16Speaker 1: the last few years. But I've been receiving a lot
- 0:19Speaker 1: of emails from different businesses saying we've got these sales
- 0:22Speaker 1: on at the moment, not only with Black Friday, which
- 0:25Speaker 1: is tomorrow obviously, but also in terms of the leading
- 0:30Speaker 1: to Christmas. Now joining me in the studio right now
- 0:33Speaker 1: is Nadine Caufield, who is Senior Constable with the Northern
- 0:36Speaker 1: Territory Police Cyber Crime Unit. Good morning to you, Nadein.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Good morning Katie, Thanks so much for your time. Now
- 0:42Speaker 1: we know that Black Friday is obviously upon us and
- 0:46Speaker 1: Christmas isn't too far away. It is really a time
- 0:49Speaker 1: where there's lots of people shopping in various different ways.
- 0:53Speaker 1: But I would assume that there's probably quite a few
- 0:55Speaker 1: people trying to take advantage of people online as well.
- 0:59Speaker 2: That's right, Yeah, we will see an increase of online
- 1:02Speaker 2: shopping online sales because of Black Friday, Christmas coming up,
- 1:08Speaker 2: and we're seeing that people are tending to go towards
- 1:11Speaker 2: online shopping with a pandemic as well.
- 1:15Speaker 1: And so with that, do you find that because there
- 1:19Speaker 1: are so many people that are online and doing shopping,
- 1:22Speaker 1: and obviously we'd always encourage people to support local, but
- 1:25Speaker 1: there are still those heading online. Do you then see
- 1:29Speaker 1: that increase in scam it's trying to you know, trying
- 1:33Speaker 1: to pray on them.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Yes, yes, Unfortunately, it can show that there is also
- 1:38Speaker 2: an increase of people being scammed from trying to purchase
- 1:43Speaker 2: things online. That is likely to happen. That scamming will
- 1:48Speaker 2: increase as online sales increase. So we're just trying to
- 1:53Speaker 2: make people aware of what's happening out there in the
- 1:56Speaker 2: online world and give them some tips on what they
- 2:01Speaker 2: can do to prevent themselves becoming a victim of a scam.
- 2:06Speaker 1: And what are some of the things that we can
- 2:08Speaker 1: do to try to make sure that we do protect
- 2:10Speaker 1: ourselves and we don't end up getting scammed throughout these sales.
- 2:15Speaker 2: First and foremost, trust your instincts. Check the seller. So
- 2:21Speaker 2: whether you're purchasing from an online website or you're purchasing
- 2:26Speaker 2: from a social media marketplace, check the seller, do your
- 2:31Speaker 2: research on the seller. You could just do a quick
- 2:33Speaker 2: Google search on the seller's name or the site's name,
- 2:36Speaker 2: and you'll be amazed to see how much comes up.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Just doing that.
- 2:43Speaker 2: The same if you're purchasing on a social media marketplace site,
- 2:48Speaker 2: research the seller, look.
- 2:51Speaker 1: For customer reviews as well. Check on customer reviews and
- 2:56Speaker 1: see what's being said out there about that seller. And
- 3:01Speaker 1: I'm assuming as well that sometimes you sort of get
- 3:04Speaker 1: those emails from a store that you might like and
- 3:06Speaker 1: they say, oh, we're having this sale, we're doing this
- 3:09Speaker 1: kind of discount. But you know, I'm assuming as well,
- 3:13Speaker 1: based on some of the discussions that we've had when
- 3:14Speaker 1: it comes to cybercrime previously, that it may be a
- 3:19Speaker 1: situation in some cases where some of those people that
- 3:21Speaker 1: are looking to pray on you know, on shoppers, are
- 3:25Speaker 1: able to almost replicate the business that you're thinking that
- 3:30Speaker 1: you're buying from, and they're actually not the legitimate.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Business, right, that's right. There is a lot of copycat
- 3:36Speaker 2: sites out there that appear to be just like the
- 3:41Speaker 2: real the legitimate site. So one tip would be if
- 3:45Speaker 2: you receive a text message or an email. Don't click
- 3:49Speaker 2: on the link. If you think that that seller is
- 3:52Speaker 2: having a great sale, just go directly to their website.
- 3:55Speaker 2: So type it in the URL, type in the website
- 3:58Speaker 2: name instead of clicking on link. That can certainly prevent
- 4:01Speaker 2: you from being forwarded to a fake site.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Yeah, and Adine, do we find that here in the
- 4:09Speaker 1: territory when it comes to some of this online sales stuff?
- 4:12Speaker 1: Are we impacted? Are we you know, do we have
- 4:16Speaker 1: territories that are being scammed? I do.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Unfortunately it is on the increase. We're seeing a lot
- 4:22Speaker 2: more people reporting that they have been scams or perhaps
- 4:26Speaker 2: there's been an attempted scam yep. So we do encourage
- 4:31Speaker 2: people to report it. If you think you've been scammed,
- 4:35Speaker 2: please make that report. You can report it on cyber
- 4:37Speaker 2: dot gov dot au, which is the Australian Cybersecurity Center website.
- 4:44Speaker 1: And even then, come Christmas time, I know that that's
- 4:46Speaker 1: sort of a time very often where some of us
- 4:48Speaker 1: maybe spend a little bit more money than what we
- 4:50Speaker 1: ordinarily would and you may be buying stuff for the
- 4:53Speaker 1: kids or for family members that are bigger ticket items
- 4:57Speaker 1: that you can't get locally. And I suppose is there
- 5:01Speaker 1: would be nothing worse than, you know, spending your heart
- 5:04Speaker 1: earned cash in the lead into Christmas and then realizing
- 5:07Speaker 1: that you've bought something for the kids that's not from
- 5:09Speaker 1: a legitimate website.
- 5:11Speaker 2: That's right, and that is happening. We do have reports
- 5:15Speaker 2: being made of exactly that happening. They've spent all the
- 5:18Speaker 2: Christmas money online, They've been scammed, they've lost the money again.
- 5:24Speaker 2: It's about being really vigilant doing your checks online. Don't
- 5:28Speaker 2: trust anyone, do your homework. Yeah, good advice, good advice.
- 5:34Speaker 2: I reckon well.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Nadine Corfield, Senior Constable with the Northern Territory Police Cybercrime Unit.
- 5:39Speaker 1: I really appreciate your time this morning. Thanks for having
- 5:41Speaker 1: chat with me, baby. Thank you
