- [warm] This is NewsCard Daily for Monday July 6, 2026 ... the biggest stories from Australia and around the world in just minutes. [serious] We begin in Canberra where the Reserve Bank is still in focus after holding the cash rate at 4.35 per cent. For households, that means mortgage pressure remains in place ... and for Treasurer Jim Chalmers, the message is clear: inflation is still not fully beaten. Markets are watching closely for any shift in tone as the economy slows and families keep feeling the squeeze. — — [serious] In Victoria, the big local talking point is the return of winter pressure on health services and energy bills, with state leaders facing fresh calls to ease cost-of-living strain. Across the country, Australians are still cutting back on essentials ... and that is keeping political pressure high on both federal and state governments as they head into a new week of economic debates. — — [curious] In sport, the Boomers are making noise after a massive 124 to 52 win over Guam in the FIBA World Cup qualifiers. It is a dominant start, and it gives Australia momentum heading into the next phase of international competition. The Opals are also in action this week against China in Melbourne ... keeping basketball firmly in the spotlight for Aussie fans. — — [serious] Now to the Middle East ... where the tension between Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu is drawing attention. Trump says Netanyahu has requested a White House meeting, with talks expected to cover Iran, Lebanon, Gaza, and the wider future of the region. The backdrop remains fragile ... with ceasefire hopes under strain and military operations still continuing in southern Lebanon. — — [urgent] Meanwhile in the United States, the political temperature is rising as Trump signals a possible reset with Israel’s leadership while still facing deep divisions at home over foreign policy and security. Any shift in Washington matters well beyond America ... including for Australia, which follows every move in the region closely because of trade, alliances, and the risk of wider instability. — — [serious] Overseas in Europe, leaders are watching the Middle East closely as well ... because any escalation can ripple through energy markets and push up prices further. That is the story for Australian listeners too: fewer shocks abroad usually means less pain at the checkout, while instability tends to hit wallets fast. — — [warm] That's NewsCard Daily.
