- 0:02Tyler Johnson: Hey everyone, welcome back to 22 Panels. This is the podcast that aims to examine, explore, and elevate the medium of comics. I am Tyler, and across the interwebs.
- 0:14Tyler Johnson: from me is Phil and Tad.
- 0:17Phil: Oh, he's out of wet fluid! Get him! Get him!
- 0:19Tyler Johnson: Get him!
- 0:20Phil: Jump his ass!
- 0:22Tyler Johnson: Hello, Sunshine! That's a call to later on. How's it going, guys?
- 0:27Tad Eggleston: It is going well. Yeah.
- 0:33Tyler Johnson: That's good. That's good. Everybody having a good weekend?
- 0:35Tad Eggleston: Fur- First week… first week away from, first week away from… School.
- 0:44Tad Eggleston: So, so kind of… catching my rhythm again?
- 0:49Tad Eggleston: Some days have felt very productive, and some days I have been… Mostly asleep.
- 0:56Phil: I… I'm.
- 0:57Tad Eggleston: Catching up.
- 0:57Phil: Of being mostly asleep.
- 1:00Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 1:01Tyler Johnson: Does Kelly also have the summer off?
- 1:05Tad Eggleston: She does, but her school year's not over yet.
- 1:08Tyler Johnson: Oh…
- 1:10Phil: It's a long one.
- 1:10Tad Eggleston: So…
- 1:11Tad Eggleston: Well, she started later than me, too. I start at, like, the beginning of August, and she starts mid-late August.
- 1:18Phil: Yeah. Mid-late August.
- 1:20Tad Eggleston: I get off at Memorial Day, and she gets off early June.
- 1:27Tad Eggleston: So… Yeah.
- 1:29Tyler Johnson: That's cool.
- 1:29Tad Eggleston: But, some awesome news yesterday, and another one that, like, I get to pinch myself because I get to, like…
- 1:38Tad Eggleston: send the text message and trade Simpsons GIFs with…
- 1:46Tad Eggleston: With one of the executive producers.
- 1:50Tad Eggleston: And creators of That Texas Blood, now in development at FX.
- 1:57Phil: That's really exciting.
- 1:58Tad Eggleston: was named as one of the three executive producers. The other two guys have lots of TV experience. It looks like it's finally happening. I know Chris is really excited. So yeah, that was a very cool piece of news, as was, Dark Horse Comics unionizing was a big.
- 2:17Tyler Johnson: Deal.
- 2:18Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 2:19Phil: Feels like a long time coming. Feels like one of those things… It does.
- 2:21Tad Eggleston: I mean, like… it's always… Interesting to make unions to begin with.
- 2:31Tad Eggleston: It's… it's that much more interesting.
- 2:38Tad Eggleston: When… You're a small… staff, and I don't think Dark Horse has a huge Yeah. Staff?
- 2:53Phil: it's… it was very funny hearing them phrased as the third largest comic publisher in the US, and it's like, oh, that's… that's…
- 3:00Phil: That's a… that's a big drop-off, though. It's a big drop-off from… from 2 to 3.
- 3:05Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 3:06Tad Eggleston: So, do you guys.
- 3:10Tyler Johnson: Do you think Dark Horse is bigger than Image.
- 3:12Phil: Well, that was… that was kind of my question. I guess it might be how you.
- 3:15Tad Eggleston: Figure me.
- 3:18Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I think it… it depends a lot… On… Whether or not… You're talking… catalog
- 3:37Tad Eggleston: And… exactly how much some of their licensed stuff sells.
- 3:42Tyler Johnson: Yeah, yup.
- 3:44Phil: That's… that was kind of what I was thinking, as well as… I mean, I imagine Dark Horse has more,
- 3:49Phil: like, studio connections than Image does, because Image is like the… I can see how you… even if they might put out more books, they might be quote-unquote smaller, because it's like a ragtag collection of, you know, creators working for themselves, rather than a company structure.
- 4:07Tad Eggleston: Well, and I would be willing to bet that most Wednesdays, Image beats out Dark Horse, but I don't know if Image beats out Dark Horse at the bookstores.
- 4:19Phil: That's a really good point.
- 4:20Tad Eggleston: in the library.
- 4:21Phil: Yeah, they probably… I think… Sure. I think, yeah.
- 4:23Tyler Johnson: Check this out, guys. I just got these with my, stuff for this week for comics.
- 4:30Tyler Johnson: That's 40 years.
- 4:31Tad Eggleston: Here's a dark horse.
- 4:31Phil: Nice!
- 4:32Tyler Johnson: Well, look how many they're in here.
- 4:34Phil: That's a whole lot, yeah, that's a fat stack, fat stack of coasters.
- 4:37Tad Eggleston: Stickers, or…
- 4:38Tyler Johnson: Stickers, yep.
- 4:39Phil: Nice. Yeah, I'd slap that on the back of my car.
- 4:42Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 4:42Tad Eggleston: I would totally slap it on something.
- 4:45Phil: Or a laptop.
- 4:46Tad Eggleston: My car, but… but, yeah.
- 4:48Tad Eggleston: I'm running out of room on my laptop, but I put lots of stickers on, like, comic boxes.
- 4:53Phil: Oh, yeah, yeah, that'd be a good one.
- 4:54Tad Eggleston: So… so… So I'm certain that I could find a place for it.
- 5:02Tad Eggleston: What kind of week has it been? You know, I've actually…
- 5:07Tad Eggleston: I mean, this is the week that Ken Paxton officially became the nominee in Texas, but I kind of expected that.
- 5:16Phil: See, pretend like I have Ted Cruz?
- 5:19Tad Eggleston: No, he primed John Cornyn.
- 5:21Phil: Oh, okay, okay.
- 5:23Tad Eggleston: But he's also… He's also, like…
- 5:29Tad Eggleston: I mean, to get… two things. First.
- 5:33Tad Eggleston: To give you an idea of, like.
- 5:36Tad Eggleston: John Cornyn, even though he's made it clear that he's voting Republican and whatnot, rather than giving an actual, like.
- 5:48Tad Eggleston: endorsement of… Paxton.
- 5:52Tad Eggleston: And nobody's quite sure, I think, whether he…
- 6:00Tad Eggleston: He was talking specifically of Paxton or Trump, but he did read on social media the parable of the…
- 6:06Tad Eggleston: the… What, the fox and the scorpion?
- 6:12Phil: The frog and the scorpion?
- 6:14Tad Eggleston: Frog and the Scorpion, yeah. Riding a… Yeah.
- 6:16Tyler Johnson: Riding across the river? Yeah.
- 6:18Tad Eggleston: Right, right.
- 6:20Tad Eggleston: you know, apropos of… I mean, because they were in a runoff. John Cornyn was the, like.
- 6:29Tad Eggleston: I mean, don't get me wrong, John Cornyn?
- 6:31Tad Eggleston: Horrible human being.
- 6:36Tad Eggleston: And still somehow better than Ken Paxton.
- 6:41Tad Eggleston: Ken Paxton was impeached by, you know, he's the Attorney General of Texas. He was impeached by the Republican legislature of Texas, and the only reason he wasn't convicted is it was after the impeachment that Trump weighed in supporting him.
- 6:56Phil: Wow, that's some bullshit right there.
- 6:59Tad Eggleston: Ken Paxton was turned into the FBI by his own staff.
- 7:07Tyler Johnson: Wow.
- 7:07Phil: It's a ringing endorsement right there, you know? .
- 7:11Tad Eggleston: Like, like, like…
- 7:15Tad Eggleston: So it's gonna… I mean, I mean, in terms of turning Texas blue, it might be the best thing that could happen, because…
- 7:22Tyler Johnson: You know…
- 7:23Tad Eggleston: More prominent.
- 7:24Phil: assholes to hate.
- 7:25Tad Eggleston: Well, f-first, you know, it, it, it meant that, like… They wound up spending…
- 7:38Tad Eggleston: Between the two of them, like…
- 7:41Tad Eggleston: Almost fi… almost half a billion dollars on the runoff campaign.
- 7:46Phil: Holy shit, wow.
- 7:48Tad Eggleston: Second, well, while the RNC is scrubbing it right now, and whatnot, the ads that got run against Paxton, I guarantee that the Democrats held onto them all, and will probably just rerun some of them.
- 8:06Phil: Nice. Well, let's hope.
- 8:08Phil: I mean…
- 8:10Phil: It'd be great if Texas could start going blue.
- 8:13Tad Eggleston: Well, I mean, it's always been more purple than… because it's gerrymandered pretty seriously.
- 8:19Phil: Exactly, yeah, yeah.
- 8:20Phil: It's… it's… we… this… talking about flipping Texas has been going on for a while.
- 8:25Tad Eggleston: It's both gerrymandered pretty seriously, and… has… Legal, big air quotes.
- 8:36Phil: Yeah.
- 8:37Tad Eggleston: What's the word I'm looking for? Legal…
- 8:47Tad Eggleston: voter suppression at a very high.
- 8:50Phil: Hmm, I see.
- 8:54Phil: Yeah, that doesn't surprise me too much.
- 8:59Tad Eggleston: But, you know, Tyler…
- 9:04Tad Eggleston: Rico's a, You know, I think 8th generation Texan.
- 9:11Tad Eggleston: And Christian actually knows his Bible.
- 9:14Tad Eggleston: Speaks well, etc. And they're already having to pull out…
- 9:19Tyler Johnson: being…
- 9:20Tad Eggleston: Yeah, they're already having to pull out, like, lies about him being a vegan.
- 9:25Tyler Johnson: Yes, they were like, he's a secret vegan, and I.
- 9:30Phil: Ugh.
- 9:31Tyler Johnson: I,
- 9:31Tad Eggleston: No, they don't say he's a secret vegan, they just say he's a vegan, and he's sitting there going, I love barbecue.
- 9:37Tyler Johnson: And then… Was it…
- 9:37Phil: Wasn't that over a picture of him eating a piece of meat? Like, that's ridiculous.
- 9:41Tad Eggleston: I, I, I don't even know.
- 9:44Tyler Johnson: I just don't understand why that would be a, an insult. Like, who the fuck cares?
- 9:50Phil: enough vegans, but I'm shit.
- 9:51Tad Eggleston: In totally Trump fashion.
- 9:57Tad Eggleston: You know, and we figured out things about Trump, like, like, it's because people seek asylum in the United States that he thinks that…
- 10:06Tad Eggleston: All of the prisons and mental institutions are being emptied in foreign nations.
- 10:13Phil: Shit!
- 10:14Tyler Johnson: He thinks that that's why he says that we're getting all the mental…
- 10:18Phil: Oof.
- 10:19Tyler Johnson: Because he heard the word asylum, And he misunderstood.
- 10:23Tad Eggleston: So, so.
- 10:26Phil: I feel like… I feel like the cognitive testing really should have been more robust before he was led into office.
- 10:31Tad Eggleston: So, so, so,
- 10:35Tad Eggleston: Let's see if you guys can draw the lines here. Trump is the one that first said that, that, that Tallarico believed he had 6 genders.
- 10:48Phil: Okay.
- 10:52Tyler Johnson: Okay. Heh.
- 10:54Tyler Johnson: That's weird.
- 10:54Tad Eggleston: gender.
- 10:55Phil: I mean, I can… oh… oh, cis… cisgender to 6 gender?
- 11:01Phil: Life… wow.
- 11:02Tyler Johnson: Yeah, I was serious.
- 11:03Phil: even… I was thinking, I was like.
- 11:05Tad Eggleston: But of course, it's all about 6 genders now.
- 11:08Tyler Johnson: Oh, God.
- 11:09Phil: We need… we need to bring back… there was a… one of my favorite articles from the feminist philosophy class I took in college was… was one called, Should There Be Three Genders? And it was a satirical article, basically saying that, like, well, of course there should, and honestly, you shouldn't stop at three.
- 11:25Phil: You know? Right.
- 11:27Tad Eggleston: But, yeah, so, I mean, like, the best they have…
- 11:32Tad Eggleston: going against Tallarico at this point is, like, ridiculous bullshit, and I don't want to say that that won't…
- 11:39Tad Eggleston: work in Trump country, but when, like, you're coming out of the gate with that.
- 11:45Phil: Yeah.
- 11:47Phil: Yeah, I mean, I think… I think they're scared.
- 11:49Tad Eggleston: It's generally not a good sign.
- 11:52Phil: Yeah, I mean, they're… they're terrified of losing power, you know, so, of course, they're starting with the most desperate tactics first.
- 12:01Tad Eggleston: Well, I mean, like, they've said that,
- 12:08Tad Eggleston: Quiet part out loud a few times.
- 12:12Tad Eggleston: Steve Bannon told a group of donors once, like, they get into power, a lot of us are going to jail.
- 12:20Tad Eggleston: Like, they try… they try to… they try to, like, play this off as… as Democrats and lawfare, but… but it's really not. It's, like, we.
- 12:31Phil: committee.
- 12:31Tad Eggleston: crimes.
- 12:32Phil: Right!
- 12:33Tad Eggleston: If there's anybody that will hold us accountable, we have problems. Which is where I will point out that…
- 12:40Tad Eggleston: that between… Between John Cornyn, And…
- 12:52Tad Eggleston: Oh, what was the other senator that he primaried recently? There are about 6 senators at this point that either because of retirement, or…
- 13:02Tad Eggleston: or… .
- 13:09Phil: political pressure, or.
- 13:12Tad Eggleston: aren't really in his camp.
- 13:17Tad Eggleston: They have…
- 13:17Tyler Johnson: I have to… I have to go in an hour, I'm just giving you.
- 13:20Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no, no, we'll get moving. I got that message.
- 13:24Tyler Johnson: I'm sorry, I'm sorry, guys. 6 in the morning, I'm like, I have stuff to go.
- 13:30Phil: Texas is big, it's taken precedence.
- 13:33Tad Eggleston: But, but, but where I'm going is…
- 13:38Tad Eggleston: Particularly as oil prices go up, as Iran goes…
- 13:42Tad Eggleston: bad, whatnot. Like, he's reaching a dangerous, dangerous point where there might be enough disruption in his own party.
- 13:55Phil: Huh.
- 13:56Tad Eggleston: For impeachment and conviction.
- 14:00Phil: Don't threaten me with a good time.
- 14:04Phil: I would…
- 14:05Tad Eggleston: I'm gonna say that, that, like, party leadership
- 14:08Tad Eggleston: Could, you know, probably has enough control to prevent it.
- 14:13Tad Eggleston: But… if they get plowed in the midterms?
- 14:20Tad Eggleston: I, you know…
- 14:22Tad Eggleston: I… I could honestly see it winding up being something that was like, okay, I just lost my job for you, my vote has changed, we really know where the dirt is.
- 14:36Phil: I, you know, again, I…
- 14:38Tad Eggleston: Yo.
- 14:38Phil: I'm hopeful. I'm hopeful, you know.
- 14:41Phil: Cautiously optimistic?
- 14:43Tad Eggleston: You know, I mean, honestly, I don't know if I'm cautiously optimistic about that or not, because that had just put J.D. Vance in, and it had suddenly give crit…
- 14:54Tad Eggleston: credibility to the rest of the Republican Party with everybody but MAGA. So…
- 14:59Phil: Well, the thing, everybody but MAGA, like, that's gotta be a significant chunk of their base, like, that's the thing, is that if, like, the only way I can imagine
- 15:10Phil: people still supporting Trump as if they're, like, fairly rabid for him, and I'm now realizing that we need to start talking about comics, you know? Yes. That is for sure.
- 15:20Tad Eggleston: So, so, so, Initial orders are due June 25th. Take it away, Tyler!
- 15:27Tyler Johnson: Alright, so our first
- 15:30Tyler Johnson: If I can get my screen to work here. First comic up is Angel from Kelly Thompson, and Julia Giacomino from Dynamite. Once the terrifying vampire Angel was cursed for his crimes with the return of his soul.
- 15:47Tyler Johnson: That soul eventually led to Sunnydale and a tragic star-crossed affair with Buffy, his vampire-slaying true love. Once the tragedy had run its course, Angel built himself a new life in Los Angeles as a supernatural detective, helping the helpless.
- 16:04Tyler Johnson: But these things don't go according to plan.
- 16:07Tyler Johnson: Don't always go according to plan, and sometimes you do have to go home again. This is that story.
- 16:18Tad Eggleston: Did you… did you announce it and give FOCs and whatnot?
- 16:21Tyler Johnson: Oh my goodness. FOC, final order cutoff, July 27th, will be in shops August 19th.
- 16:28Tad Eggleston: from Dynamite.
- 16:30Tyler Johnson: I did… Yeah, but I did.
- 16:31Tad Eggleston: She accounted.
- 16:33Tyler Johnson: And I did at the time. Okay.
- 16:34Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 16:35Tyler Johnson: harder cutoff.
- 16:36Tad Eggleston: Mark Waite and Chris Samney return with…
- 16:40Tad Eggleston: Batman and Robin Year 1, Dynamic Duos!
- 16:44Tad Eggleston: From DC Comics, Batman and Robin are back in action, the Dark Knight and the Boy Wonder have been hard at work cleaning up the streets of Gotham City, and their partnership has only gotten tighter. But when a gang of street kids starts causing mischief, Batman and Robin will need to get to the bottom of where these kids came from, and who is in charge.
- 17:03Tad Eggleston: Batman and Robin Year 1 Dynamic Duos is final order cut off July 20th, and in stores on August 12th.
- 17:15Tyler Johnson: Is it me again?
- 17:18Tad Eggleston: You're blue.
- 17:18Tyler Johnson: Okay, I am blue. I was just on the wrong screen. Okay. Bug Wars, the coming of The War Doom, from Jason Aaron, Muhammad Asrar, and Matthew Wilson from Image.
- 17:31Tyler Johnson: The backyard battlefield heats up, and it's even more brutal and bloodier than before. Returning to the savage suburban epic that feeds honey, I Shrunk the kids through a war grinder. Oh, that feeds honey, I shrunk the Kids. There you go, it's a movie. Feeds Shrunk the Kids.
- 17:47Phil: That feeds.
- 17:48Tyler Johnson: funny, I… I forgot, I didn't realize that was a movie title.
- 17:51Phil: Oh.
- 17:52Tyler Johnson: Returning to the savage epic that feeds Honey, I Shrunk the Kids through a war grinder.
- 17:57Tad Eggleston: better.
- 17:58Tyler Johnson: Yep. And marinated in Conan-flavored myth and mayhem. Six months later, the yard ran red with insect blood. Uneasy peace is shattered as ancient enemies rise from the woods.
- 18:12Tyler Johnson: Corporate extermination forces close in.
- 18:15Tyler Johnson: And Slade Slaymaker is dragged back into a brutal world where roach knights ride, squirrel armies gather, and survival means choosing your side in a war no human was meant to fight. This has a final order cut off of July 27th, and will be in shops August 19th.
- 18:35Tad Eggleston: Fort Psycho number 1 from Matt Kint and Brian Hurt at Oney Press. Ten years ago, the nation of Singapore sank into the Pacific Ocean. The underground terrorist network known as the Seven Seals took credit for the largest act of terror in human history. In the aftermath, the United Nations created a strike team of highly trained covert opposites…
- 18:54Tad Eggleston: operatives with one mission, locate, identify, and eliminate the Seven Seal's secretive leader. The team's clandestine affairs were to always remain in shadows until their final explosive confrontation resulted in a large-scale tragedy too bloody to cover up and too tragic to ignore.
- 19:13Tad Eggleston: Disgraced and disavowed by the governments that trained them, the world's most dangerous secret agents have been convicted for their crimes and sentenced to serve time side by side in the one place capable of holding them, their Old Highland headquarters, Fort Cyclone.
- 19:30Tad Eggleston: Now known in the media by its derogatory name, Fort Psycho.
- 19:36Tad Eggleston: And that's where the official story is about to go terribly, terribly wrong.
- 19:44Tyler Johnson: Dun dun dun.
- 19:45Tad Eggleston: Final order cut off, June 29th, in stores August 5th.
- 19:49Phil: Next up, there's Gastrominique from Marjorie Bennett and Helena Masellis over at Boom.
- 19:58Phil: Terrar, the cannibal may be compelled to eat, but Lady Charlotte, codenamed the Python, is a cold-blooded spy compelled to hunt. A visceral game of cat and mouse begins at Lady Charlotte hunts down the elusive cannibal stalking the streets of France during the Revolution, and she'll stop at nothing to pursue her prey. Lady Charlotte's quest for revenge is aided by her former lover, Zelie, and together they explore the seedy underbelly of
- 20:23Phil: Paris and each other in a hypnotic fever dream. Gonna have a final order cutoff of June 29th in stores August 12th from Boom.
- 20:34Phil: Tyler, you had highlighted Hank Howard Pizza Detective for a third title. I don't remember, did we do that one last week?
- 20:42Tad Eggleston: No, no, we did… we did… we did something else with Hank.
- 20:44Tyler Johnson: Do you know?
- 20:45Tad Eggleston: last week.
- 20:46Tyler Johnson: Oh, okay, let's skip that then.
- 20:48Phil: Oh, okay.
- 20:48Tad Eggleston: Go for it.
- 20:49Phil: Nope.
- 20:49Tyler Johnson: Alright!
- 20:50Tad Eggleston: for it.
- 20:51Tyler Johnson: I don't know why I did 3, because I'm a little bit selfish.
- 20:54Tad Eggleston: We got lots of books this week.
- 20:56Phil: So many good books.
- 20:56Tad Eggleston: month.
- 20:57Tyler Johnson: Hank Howard Pizza Detective. We did talk about last week, but it was a different book. The Fair Play, number one, from Robert Venditti and David Laffem, from Bad Idea.
- 21:09Tyler Johnson: When it comes to taking down Hollywood's worst criminals, Detective Hank Howard works alone, but when two crazed criminals decide to go full Grand Theft Auto and hijack the model for Big Caligula's shining new fleet of food trucks, all bets are off.
- 21:25Tyler Johnson: For the first time, Hank must team up with Big Caligula's Southeast Regional Manager, Barb Knox, to recover the stolen whip.
- 21:33Tyler Johnson: Together, they'll go full throttle in a high-speed pursuit of justice, facing down a barrage of bullets, high-octane explosions, and two pizza perps who are willing to do whatever it takes to get away clean.
- 21:46Tyler Johnson: This will be in shops July 6th, and… or, excuse me, final order cutoff of July 6th, and in shops August 5th.
- 21:54Phil: Alright, now we've got a book I'm really excited for. It is Prima Operada by Olivia Dufault, Rebecca Isaacs, and Maria Louise over at Ignition Press. Welcome to the conservatory. After Earth was shattered into surviving pockets across the galaxy, humanity's most talented young women train at this prestigious celestial boarding school to become the next generation of mech pilots.
- 22:17Phil: But these students aren't soldiers. They're ballerinas, and the mechs aren't built for battle, but performance, all engineered in body and mind to entertain a ruling class of cosmic patrons in an annual life-or-death recital of mankind's only unifying story, the saga of Apollita the Huntress, a goddess whose pursuit of one last elusive prey ends in heartbreak.
- 22:40Phil: This year's top recruits, the quietly ambitious Mar and rebellious Rhea, endure a cutthroat curriculum to compete for the crowning title of prima operata. As their bond deepens and Mar's obsessive quest puts her under the wing of Hippalda herself, the line between art and indoctrination blurs, and the great personal costs of perfection transform their lives. Black Swan and Never Let Me Go meet Pacific Rim in this groundbreaking
- 23:05Phil: space opera. Gonna have a final order cutoff of July 27th, in store, September 2nd, once again, from Ignition Comics. How about some graphic novels?
- 23:15Tyler Johnson: Yeah, alright. First graphic novel is Aperture from Kirsten Thompson in, Quinito?
- 23:24Tyler Johnson: From Mad Cave. When Sage, a first-year university student, discovers a forgotten camera in the library archives, she's thrust into a world beyond her own time. I'm switching glasses here.
- 23:37Tyler Johnson: the… The camera links her to August, a student who walks the same halls more than a century earlier.
- 23:45Tyler Johnson: What begins as a miraculous connection soon just deepens into something neither of them expected. But history has a way of pulling people apart, and as World War I looms for August.
- 23:58Tyler Johnson: the closer they grow… is that… did I say that wrong? The closer they grow, the more impossible it seems to hold on.
- 24:06Tyler Johnson: A, final word cutoff of August 3rd will be in shops August 22nd.
- 24:14Tad Eggleston: Bimbo Adjit Prop from Raquel Jack at Fanagraphics. Bimbo Agitprop captures the reality of growing up in West Texas in the early 21st century through satanic panics, Y2K, a recession, abusive parents, shitty men, identity-centric politics, and woke, anti-woke pendulum swings, reflective of the author's era, born in the late 90s, of hyper-individualist oversharing
- 24:38Tad Eggleston: of late 2020…
- 24:41Tad Eggleston: 2010's internet, while being firmly grounded in the unfiltered, handmade, radically anti-establishment art of the 1960s underground comics. Raquel Jack keeps her wounds fresh and open.
- 24:54Tad Eggleston: To both remember the past and protect yourself in the future. At Turns explicit, hilarious, profane, and defiant, Bimbo Edurop is both an act of self-preservation and a call to arms.
- 25:07Tad Eggleston: Boldly embraces frivolity, bimboism, comedy, memory, and storytelling to interrogate the reality
- 25:15Tad Eggleston: Interrogate reality in 2020s. Ping-ponging among relationships, psychedelic trips, good sex, bad sex, romance, and trauma.

- 31:10Phil: ya.
- 31:11Tyler Johnson: I didn't catch…
- 31:12Tad Eggleston: Search just how to draw a secret?
- 31:14Tyler Johnson: Yes, I did, and it wouldn't pop up. I don't know.
- 31:18Phil: The secret was kept from him.
- 31:20Tad Eggleston: Maybe he spelled it wrong.
- 31:22Tyler Johnson: I could show you where I'm searching…
- 31:26Tyler Johnson: It's popping up Thundercats for some reason.
- 31:29Phil: Some cats also pop up for me, but.
- 31:31Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 31:31Phil: You know.
- 31:32Tad Eggleston: That was next to it.
- 31:34Tyler Johnson: Yeah, it's only popping up Thundercats on my screen. Weird. Death Slinger, man.
- 31:38Tad Eggleston: So anyway, Collections! The Complete Assassin's Apprentice from Robin Hobb. Hobb, Jodie Hauser, and Ryan Kelly. I've been actually meaning to read this for a while, so coming out in a collection, makes me happy. Nice.

- 32:17Tad Eggleston: When Fitz is still a young boy, at the behest of his grandfather, King Shrewd, he is brought to the castle and educated as a member of the court. But at night, Fitz is secretly tutored by the royal assassin, who teaches him patience, precision, and poison.
- 32:31Tad Eggleston: As Fitz grows into manhood, barbarous raiders ravage the coast, and Fitz is trained in another art, the powerful telepathic magic known as the Skill.
- 32:41Tad Eggleston: Plunged into a maze of schemes and intrigue as enemies abound and duty and honor are at ends, Fitz finds that the fate of the kingdom may lie in his hands.

- 33:02Tyler Johnson: Awesome! Let me carry up my right screen here. End of Life from Kyle Starks.
- 33:07Tyler Johnson: And Steve Pugh…
- 33:09Tad Eggleston: Oh, God.
- 33:10Tyler Johnson: From, DC, Vertigo.
- 33:13Tad Eggleston: You see vertigo, yeah.
- 33:15Tyler Johnson: Professional hitman Eddie Stallion messed up. He just accidentally robbed his International Assassins Guild, the Menagerie, and now there's a huge price on his head, and everyone is looking to cash in.
- 33:29Tyler Johnson: So, needless to say, he's in huge trouble. So Eddie hides in the place they'd least expect, the small town of Pluto, home of his estranged father, ex-Menagerie member, and badass George Stellan.
- 33:43Tyler Johnson: Expecting safety, Eddie instead finds his resentful father dying of cancer, surprise menagerie assassins, and a local crime lord who is also a canceled comic strip creator. All this is happening in a delightful town full of weirdos that Eddie can't stand.
- 33:59Tyler Johnson: Oh, and his childhood first love is there, too. Kyle Starks and Steve Pugh, the team behind Peacemaker Tries Hard, present the story of a man-child assassin with very grown-up problems.
- 34:11Tyler Johnson: Final order cutoff, August 3rd, will be in shops October 13th. I just read the third issue, I'm a little behind, I think one behind. It's really good. So good. Very exciting.
- 34:24Phil: Alright, The Thing on the Doorstep by Simon Burks, Willie Roberts, and Rob Jones from Image.
- 34:31Phil: It is true that I have sent 6 bullets through the head of my best friend, and yet I hope to show by this statement that I am not his murderer. The year is 1933, and Edward Derby's best friend, Daniel Upton, visits him in Arkham Sanatorium and shoots him dead to the horror of the guards. It's an open and shut case.
- 34:50Phil: Or is it? What happened to this lifelong friendship for it to end this way? Who exactly was Edward Derby at the end of his life? And most importantly, will his murder…
- 35:00Phil: be enough to stop him. It's coming from Image Comics with a final order cutoff of August 31st.
- 35:06Phil: That doesn't make sense. Final order cutoff can't be before when it's in store, so that's a final order cutoff of July 6th, in stores, August 19th.
- 35:17Tad Eggleston: Yeah, that's weird.
- 35:20Phil: time… time don't work that way. Finally we're cut off this week is,

- 36:31Tyler Johnson: Phil, go ahead, I'll take humble bundles.
- 36:33Phil: Alright.
- 36:34Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 36:34Phil: First up, there is Lab Zero Remix, a comics magazine hacking pop culture from Ronald Wimberly on Kickstarter,
- 36:43Phil: starting June 9th, or through June 9th?
- 36:47Tad Eggleston: Through June 9th.

Tezuka, God of Manga, a documentary from Jason Cohn on Kickstarter, also launching soon, as well as Scar Tissue Bargains from Stephen Fox on Kickstarter launches soon as well, so there's a few previews, I believe those are
- 38:00Phil: pre-hyped, because Tad was able to interview and talk to those creators.
- 38:05Tad Eggleston: What, what?
- 38:05Phil: I think…
- 38:06Tad Eggleston: Please type them on.
- 38:07Tad Eggleston: them ahead of time.
- 38:10Phil: Yes!
- 38:11Tad Eggleston: I have not talked to Emily Mayer and Ryan Carey about this year's. Okay.
- 38:17Tad Eggleston: And I have talked to Daryl Cunningham or Jimmy Lee.
- 38:22Phil: Okay.
- 38:23Phil: So 3, 3 more, 3 more on the books we need.
- 38:26Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 38:26Phil: Next up, we got Humble Bundles, Tyler?
- 38:30Tyler Johnson: Alright, Infinite Dread. I'm really, excited about this one. Horror Comics from Oni Press. We talked about this last week a little bit. For $18, you get 23 items, which includes Cemetery Kids Don't Die.
- 38:44Tyler Johnson: dwellings, and meat eaters. Funds from this go to Book Industry Charitable Foundation, and that is going for about another 7 days. June 6th is the cutoff, so get on that.
- 38:57Tyler Johnson: Hot Mass Express is a big bundle of misfit heroes and hilarious hijinks from Image Comics. $18 gets you 49 items. That is a huge deal, you guys. 8 billion genies.
- 39:10Tyler Johnson: God Hates Astronauts, I Hate Fairyland, Monkey Meat, Shirtless Bear Fighter, and Snot Girl, all included. Book Industry Charitable Foundation is who that is going to, and that is June 9th, so… got about 10 days for that one.
- 39:25Tyler Johnson: And then, Kodansha Presents BL, Yuri and more Ikijinsha? Is that how you pronounce it? Ichiginsa?
- 39:34Tad Eggleston: from Ichi Jinsha.
- 39:35Tad Eggleston: Yeah. Which is wonderful.
- 39:36Tyler Johnson: Is that how you pronounce her name? Yeah.
- 39:38Tad Eggleston: It's one of their, imprints.
- 39:44Tyler Johnson: Oh, got it, got it, got it. Okay, $30 gets you 61 items, which is more than 100 volumes, so…
- 39:51Phil: Wow.
- 39:51Tyler Johnson: Comic Book Legal Defense Fund is, who's getting the proceeds from that, and you have until June 19th, so about 20 days left.
- 40:02Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 40:03Tad Eggleston: This was a really tough week for Amazing Books.
- 40:06Tyler Johnson: It was so good. Holy book.
- 40:08Tad Eggleston: I almost went 9, but then I saw that we were on a tight schedule today, and I knew we were gonna wind up babbling before now. So I'll just say exploit number 3 totally lived up to exploita… exploit…
- 40:20Tad Eggleston: Expectations, exploitations, all of the above. I loved it. Laura Hudson, Tim Leong, Amelia Pina at Mad Cave. Is Ted okay? Number 4, Dave Chisholm from Mad Cave.
- 40:34Tad Eggleston: Was this a… twist? Kind of.
- 40:40Phil: So Ted is.
- 40:40Tad Eggleston: I loved it.
- 40:41Tad Eggleston: I don't know. I don't know. Which is how Five Gears in Reverse, a criminal book, somehow came in all the way down at 3, and Sean Phillips at Image.
- 40:56Tad Eggleston: all of that knocking out 51 Absolute Woman or Woman, feral, Halloween Boy, The Hab.
- 41:05Tad Eggleston: In Your Skin, Kill All Immortals 2, Voyage of Sinbad… Last Voyage is Sinbad, Peril of the Brutal Dark, Ezra Kane Mystery No. 4 was great, Pretty Hate Machine 2 was really good.
- 41:18Tad Eggleston: You know, another…
- 41:19Tyler Johnson: Everything in your, honorable mentions is amazing. I have read many of those books already, and very excited about, specifically, I didn't write them down yet, but…
- 41:36Tyler Johnson: Florida Hippopotamus Cocaine Massacre is amazing. It is so funny.
- 41:41Phil: It lives up to the title, then.
- 41:43Tyler Johnson: It does. It does. Fiddle.
- 41:46Tyler Johnson: Is there a walk you want to go on?
- 41:47Tad Eggleston: Yeah, take a walk, Phil.
- 41:48Phil: Sure, yeah, I'm walking here. Yeah, sure. You know, it… I was…
- 41:52Tad Eggleston: Walk the plank.
- 41:53Phil: To the plank, I do…
- 41:55Tyler Johnson: He's walking to first.
- 41:57Phil: Okay, yeah, you know, that was the only way I could.
- 42:00Tad Eggleston: Show some hustling!
- 42:01Phil: Come on!
- 42:02Tyler Johnson: Fun!
- 42:02Phil: Was, by getting walked or hit by the ball, you know? That was how I took my waist.
- 42:07Tyler Johnson: You and me both, man. I was, I loved sports. Wait a minute, no I didn't. No.
- 42:11Phil: Yeah, no, that was not a great time, but yeah, you know, for a short week, it feels like a long week. It's a weird one. And good news is I did finally get to the comic book store to pick up a sweet pile, for the first time in a couple months, so, that's gonna be fun to dig into over the next couple weeks, because, you know.
- 42:30Phil: That's how I spread it all out. And I finally… I started buying to transition to our, our manga race, for the first one in a while. I've started buying Tower Dungeon instead of getting it from the library, that's how much I've been enjoying it. So, I was able to sneak in a chapter reading it while, while, while the… during the preamble before we were on air, so I've read 16 chapters…
- 42:50Phil: Of Tower Dungeon, they're long chapters, I swear.
- 42:51Tad Eggleston: Whereas when we get to our one-pace race.
- 42:55Tad Eggleston: Week 101!
- 42:58Tyler Johnson: Thanks!
- 42:59Tad Eggleston: I'm still at 691 chapters, because,
- 43:04Tad Eggleston: our great responsibility, Hello Sunshine, was longer than I thought it was. Not in a, like, bad way, but in.
- 43:12Tyler Johnson: No. No.
- 43:13Tad Eggleston: time-planning way.
- 43:16Phil: Yes. Not.
- 43:16Tad Eggleston: Not so good for managing to also squeeze in some One Piece, particularly because I didn't get to any of it until last night.
- 43:24Tyler Johnson: When you… when you asked me the other day about the drawing, I think it was yesterday, maybe, you, interrupted my reading time, because I also didn't know that.
- 43:35Tad Eggleston: And we sold the real.
- 43:36Tyler Johnson: was so long, I was like, oh!
- 43:40Tad Eggleston: It's funny.
- 43:40Phil: It doesn't feel like that big a book.
- 43:43Tyler Johnson: It does visual, but it.
- 43:44Phil: It's a big book. It's a thick one.
- 43:46Tad Eggleston: I think if I'd had a physical copy, I would have been more aware that I needed to start it earlier. Yeah.
- 43:54Tad Eggleston: I was reading digitally, and I didn't look at my page counts until the end of Chapter 1.
- 44:01Phil: 90P.
- 44:01Tad Eggleston: ages in.
- 44:02Phil: Yeah, yeah.
- 44:03Tyler Johnson: Do you guys like the Scooby-Doo kind of formula for this?
- 44:07Phil: Yeah, I thought it was…
- 44:08Tyler Johnson: Is it funny?
- 44:09Phil: It was really good. It was. It was absolutely fun. I loved how much the book just felt like a group of friends hanging out.
- 44:16Tad Eggleston: Maybe it's because I didn't watch enough Scooby-Doo, but I thought more afternoon special.
- 44:22Tyler Johnson: Did you?
- 44:23Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 44:23Phil: Afternoon special. Is that a…
- 44:25Tyler Johnson: It's…
- 44:26Phil: Do you just mean, like, general afternoon specials?
- 44:28Tyler Johnson: No, it was an 80s thing that they did.
- 44:31Phil: Okay, let me look this up.
- 44:33Tad Eggleston: I'm too young for a show. It was almost always, it was almost always, like, PSA movies.
- 44:39Tyler Johnson: Yep, yeah, they were, like, wholesome stuff.
- 44:42Phil: Yeah, that's…
- 44:42Tyler Johnson: That's all it.
- 44:43Phil: Okay.
- 44:43Tad Eggleston: Let's learn about drug use.
- 44:45Tyler Johnson: That's fine.
- 44:46Tad Eggleston: about depression. Let's learn about kids with cancer.
- 44:51Phil: I didn't realize that was, like, a name of a show. I thought that it was just, like, a concept of, like, oh yeah, it's an afternoon special, like, something you wa… like…
- 44:59Tad Eggleston: Well, and it wasn't, like, the name of a show, so specifically because…
- 45:05Tyler Johnson: time. It was the.
- 45:06Phil: Market.
- 45:07Tad Eggleston: No, no, no, no, no, no, no, because they weren't every week. That's why they were specials.
- 45:14Tyler Johnson: Oh, you're right, you're right, you're right, yup.
- 45:16Tad Eggleston: It was the after, you know, it was… it was… they would take over the block of time for… for… for a very…
- 45:27Tad Eggleston: a special.
- 45:30Tad Eggleston: A movie about a teenager with cancer, or a very special movie about a friend who committed suicide, or a very special movie about a girl who took too many diet pills.
- 45:44Phil: I see where you're going.
- 45:46Tyler Johnson: Do you guys remember that Saved by the Bell, where Jesse took too many caffeine pills? That's right.
- 45:52Phil: I never watched the… I never watched Tape by the Bell.
- 45:54Tyler Johnson: Anyway… That was.
- 45:56Tad Eggleston: Not even after you finished watching,
- 45:59Tad Eggleston: Showgirls. You didn't want to go back and see her previous…
- 46:03Tyler Johnson: She…
- 46:04Phil: No.
- 46:05Tyler Johnson: That really messed me up, because she was so, like, wholesome in Saved by the Bell, and then you watch that, Showgirls, and you're like, holy crap!
- 46:13Phil: I think I've owned.
- 46:13Tad Eggleston: I mean, she's not exactly unwholesome in Showgirl, she's just in a tough situation.
- 46:20Tad Eggleston: Gotta do… a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do.
- 46:24Phil: So I think I've only seen a made-for-TV edit of Showgirls, because I remember a scene where, like, she's dancing in front of a guy, and she takes off her bra and is wearing a second bra underneath. Yeah. So, yeah, that's my experience with that train wreck, you know? .
- 46:40Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 46:41Phil: Well…
- 46:41Tyler Johnson: I really… you guys, Scooby-Doo, this is like Scooby-Doo meets psychological horror.
- 46:46Phil: Yes!
- 46:47Tyler Johnson: This is great. So, instead of…
- 46:49Tad Eggleston: Real mental health stuff.
- 46:51Tyler Johnson: Yes.
- 46:51Phil: Yes, because, Kizu was drawn from her own experiences with this one, where in the after, afterward, she talks about having, psychotic bipolar, I think it's bipolar 1, and, you know, wanting to emphasize the… instead of, you know.
- 47:09Phil: Have a story that has scary supernatural elements and mental illness in it together, not just saying that, oh, mental illness is a scary supernatural event that's occurring.
- 47:18Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 47:19Phil: I think she did really great with this one. Yeah. Like, it… it was… it… I… I agree with you in hindsight that, okay, maybe there was a touch of the after-school special, but, like, it never felt like it was explaining.
- 47:32Tad Eggleston: actually mean that as a…
- 47:34Phil: Okay.
- 47:35Tad Eggleston: Completely negative thing?
- 47:37Phil: I didn't think so, because, like, it doesn't ever feel like it's explaining to you, but yeah, it's absolutely, like, here's what kids are going through.
- 47:44Tad Eggleston: What I actually… what I actually meant it as is, like, in many of the afternoon specials, there were, like, very few adults.
- 47:52Phil: Oh, okay.
- 47:53Tyler Johnson: Correct, yeah.
- 47:54Phil: That makes sense.
- 47:55Tad Eggleston: You know, it was just… I mean, I think part of it was, let's get the cheapest actors we can find.
- 48:03Phil: Correct. Oh, that's funny.
- 48:05Tyler Johnson: Sometimes it was Fred Savage, and other times it was Candace Cameron.
- 48:11Tad Eggleston: Well, no, no, no, not after they had their shows.
- 48:15Phil: Yeah, no worries.
- 48:16Tyler Johnson: I know, but… I remember one with friends and… Because they were too expensive!
- 48:20Tad Eggleston: once… I mean, it was a good launch pad for people that wanted to be child actors with shows.
- 48:28Tyler Johnson: Yep, yep.
- 48:30Tyler Johnson: It was.
- 48:32Tyler Johnson: Do the…
- 48:34Tad Eggleston: Do the, the, the afternoon special get noticed?
- 48:38Tad Eggleston: Okay, now I'm gonna fall down the afternoon special rabbit hole.
- 48:41Tyler Johnson: Well, I'll talk about… I'll talk about this. This story focuses on, like, Alex, right? And he has this, like, psychotic…
- 48:50Tyler Johnson: episode over the summer, and he goes missing. And his boyfriend, I'm doing air quotes for those that are listening, because it's secret, his boyfriend returns from, like, a summer Bible camp, right?
- 49:03Phil: Yeah.
- 49:04Tyler Johnson: And, you know, they begin the search for their friend Alex.
- 49:09Phil: Oh, yeah, yeah, it's… it was… I really liked, the slow build of having things come together, because, it really does… you spend a good chunk of the book, wondering, like, not even knowing
- 49:24Phil: not really having any leads, knowing what happened to him, and just kind of fleshing out the cast and the world, which, again, was… was really… was really lovely. I… I liked how…
- 49:34Phil: different each of the characters felt from each other. They felt like really well-established characters with, you know… I feel like sometimes with groups of teenagers, they can all kind of blend together a little bit.
- 49:47Phil: But with this one, they definitely all stood out and had their own unique personalities and backgrounds and whatnot.
- 49:55Phil: And I liked… I liked how there were… there was the… the shifting chapter focuses, you know, with the changing narration throughout, because I think that… that really helped, you know, keep any one kid from stealing the show, and ultimately the… the focus really does fall back on Alex.
- 50:13Tyler Johnson: It… it really feels like you get an all-encompassing story.
- 50:18Phil: Yeah.
- 50:18Tyler Johnson: because when you shift, like you said, shift focus, it does… I like that in stories. I don't get… it helps me stay engaged and not too bored.
- 50:28Phil: Yes.
- 50:30Tyler Johnson: Yo.
- 50:31Tyler Johnson: What I like about this is, like, comic books have a kind of a not-great track record when, you know, mental illness. Yeah. You know, usually it's, like, the crazy villains, you know? Oh, absolutely. And this really flips this entirely, you know? Absolutely, yeah. Keezy did a great job, right? Speaking about her own experiences with, bipolar, and then using the supernatural, I think, is a great
- 50:56Tyler Johnson: Metaphor, right, for…
- 51:00Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 51:00Tyler Johnson: psychosis and mania that people go through without taking away the character by saying that they're just a mental illness. That's not their personality, you know.
- 51:10Phil: Yeah, so the… one of the only other,
- 51:14Phil: pieces of media I could think to compare to this is the TV show Legion.
- 51:19Phil: Because that's another example where… I mean, admittedly, it's a bit different, because they kind of go back and forth, and it… it's not… it doesn't handle the mental illness aspect quite as well as Hello Sunshine does. I mean, but that's also because I feel like this is… this is one of the best, representations and depictions of…
- 51:38Phil: like, psychosis, someone in… going through a psychotic break that I've ever seen. But in Legion, they do… they do at, you know, he's a guy who starts out
- 51:48Phil: he has a mental illness, and then it turns out, oh no, you have superpowers, and then they realize, no, no, no, you have a mental illness and superpowers. But it's definitely still more fantastical than, than… than Hello Sunshine. And I think that was a really important distinction, because, like.
- 52:07Phil: I don't know about you guys, but, like, there… this… this is probably the first, graphic novel that some of the spooky scenes actually were getting me a little bit scared. Like, some of the page turns, her drawings of the… the demons…
- 52:21Tyler Johnson: that, but, like, if you think about, like, the lettering was getting more claustrophobic as it went along to represent, like, the hallucinations that Alex was experiencing, the auditory stuff. They're getting more and more, I don't know what the word is, packed together.
- 52:39Phil: Yeah.
- 52:40Tyler Johnson: It was really…
- 52:41Phil: historically.
- 52:41Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 52:42Phil: It was, yeah. It's… it's… I think her lettering was really good, and, worked super well for that part.
- 52:50Phil: Because, like, it was funny, it was one of those things where, like, early on in the chapters, I was, like, there were a couple lettering choices, I was like, okay, you know, alright, like, balloon placement things,
- 53:03Phil: But then for that… by that segment, I was fully engrossed, I feel like… because this is a book, I don't know, I don't know about you guys, I follow Keezy on Blue Sky, and so, I'd been seeing her post-process about this book for a couple years, seeing it come together, so I was really happy and excited to… to finally get to read it all the way through, you know, and… and it felt like…
- 53:25Phil: felt like getting to know the characters beforehand was really great, like… I know I keep coming back to that, but but yeah, it was just… it was really… I felt like it was really strong, and
- 53:35Phil: I think she's talked about… I don't know what the status of it is yet, but she's talked about a possible sequel to this one.
- 53:41Phil: I really hope sees the light of day, eventually.
- 53:46Tyler Johnson: I ought.
- 53:47Tyler Johnson: I… I just really love… I don't know if you've ever seen… did either of you read the physical format of it? I haven't. I have not. But… but is there painted edges on the… on the books that get darker as the…
- 54:00Phil: Yes.
- 54:00Tyler Johnson: story goes along. Okay.
- 54:01Phil: you can see, you can see, I mean, how there's a stripe about…
- 54:05Phil: two-thirds, three-quarters of the way through, and I showed my wife while I was reading, and I was like, oh, I bet that's a scary part. And that… that was when, Alex was going… it's actually interesting that, you know, the… the…
- 54:16Phil: Gutters for the book, through most of it, are white.
- 54:20Phil: And then as you get to, the details of Alex going into psychosis, the edges start slowly darkening into, like, a dirty gray, and then they… they…
- 54:33Phil: eventually gets, like, a heavy black. So, yeah, that was… and that was probably the most, you know, distorted and warped, part of the book, for sure.
- 54:43Tyler Johnson: I love stuff like that, where they're using different aspects of just the physical making of the book to add to that. Yeah. And so even the color palette, right? These very vibrant retro colors to, you know, set the mood, joyful kind of moments are, you know.
- 55:01Tyler Johnson: Warm colors, bright light. And then, during the paranormal stuff.
- 55:08Tyler Johnson: Really, really heavy blacks and shadows.
- 55:10Phil: Oh, yeah, her style is really great like that, in that it can switch from, like, a tender, emotional, you know, happy, happy-go-lucky moment to then, like, dark and spooky at the turn of a page. It's really… it's really wonderful.
- 55:27Phil: Yeah, and I also love… there's so… like, it's also one of those where I want to specifically say that, like, Kesey's a really great comic artist, because there were so many moments of, like, panel progressions that I thought were super smooth.
- 55:41Tad Eggleston: God. Yeah. So good.
- 55:42Phil: super good. Page compositions were always wonderful. Like, that's the thing, is that even if I had a couple super minor nitpicks about the lettering early on, I was fully engrossed super quickly. I felt like there's nothing she can't draw. There was a great combination of
- 56:01Phil: like, physical movement, and not just people being placed in a scene and talking, you know, so there was a physicality, the spatial awareness was great, it felt like everyone was in rooms. Sometimes that can feel, like, kind of blown out. So yeah, everything about this, this was, you know, top to notch.
- 56:20Phil: incredible graphic novel. I really… it's one of those where I hope there's, like, a slightly larger trimmed hardcover out there, because the version I got is, like, paperback.
- 56:30Phil: It's a little bit bigger than manga, but it's closer to manga size, comparing it to the volume of Tower Dungeon I have, it's, like, just a little bit taller, but it is closer to that manga size than,
- 56:45Phil: than the standard comic book trim, but her… her art's so wonderful, I would love to see this, just a little bit larger, too, you know? It's one of those books, if you can find a… like, if there is… I don't know if the hardcover is bigger, but if it is, definitely go for the hardcover of this.
- 57:01Tyler Johnson: Awesome. Alright, anything else, guys, on.
- 57:06Tad Eggleston: We're gonna have to go through…
- 57:07Tyler Johnson: That's right.
- 57:07Tad Eggleston: We're gonna have to go through some of the… the…
- 57:11Tad Eggleston: the results of my… and I haven't finished my, my.
- 57:15Phil: Afternoon specialty dive.
- 57:16Tad Eggleston: rabbit hole.
- 57:18Phil: Yeah.
- 57:18Tad Eggleston: But…
- 57:18Tyler Johnson: Is that what you were doing while we were talking?
- 57:21Tad Eggleston: But we're just gonna, we're just gonna, like, talk about some people involved and give quick descriptions of the, the, the episodes that we're following today.
- 57:32Tyler Johnson: So into it, yeah.
- 57:33Tad Eggleston: Bo Bridges, directed an episode called Don't Tough.
- 57:43Phil: Don't talk?
- 57:44Tad Eggleston: A teenager babysitting a young girl discovers that she's stood by a family friend when the harrowing memories of her own past molestation by her uncle come to the surface.
- 57:55Phil: Jeez.
- 57:56Phil: Yeah, this does not sound like a fun time.
- 57:58Tad Eggleston: Steven Gyllenhaal.
- 58:00Tad Eggleston: Jake and Maggie's father.
- 58:03Tad Eggleston: directed, what are friends for? Two 12-year-old girls going through a divorce. Make a pact never to divorce their friendship.
- 58:11Phil: Oh, I thought 12 was a little early for divorce.
- 58:15Tad Eggleston: Jodie Foster was actually in 3 of them.
- 58:19Phil: M.
- 58:20Tad Eggleston: Alexander, the story of a retired clown and his undying love for children.
- 58:27Phil: Oh, God!
- 58:28Tad Eggleston: Rookie of the Year! An 11-year-old girl encounters opposition as she join… when she joins her brother's Little League baseball team, which happens to be all male.
- 58:40Phil: It's a fun one. So, yeah.
- 58:42Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 58:43Phil: Relevant to today's world?
- 58:46Tad Eggleston: The Secret Life of TK Deering, a 12-year-old girl, invites her grandfather to join her secret club.
- 58:55Tad Eggleston: So it sounds like she got some of the more wholesome ones. Rob Lowe was in a couple of them. Schoolboy father, high school senior, discovers his summer girlfriend has given birth to his child and decides to fight for custody.
- 59:08Phil: Wow.
- 59:10Phil: That's a…
- 59:10Tad Eggleston: Matter of time.
- 59:16Tad Eggleston: Teen Liesl Gilbert finds inner strength when she learns her mother is dying of cancer.
- 59:25Tad Eggleston: let's see, who's in this one? Oh, we got Cloris Leachman…
- 59:32Phil: Cool.
- 59:32Tad Eggleston: Who did I… oh, Kirk Cameron was in one called The Woman Who Willed a Miracle. A blind, mentally challenged infant with cerebral palsy is left in the care of an elderly English woman who refuses to let him die. I think… I think Cameron plays the…
- 59:51Tad Eggleston: The… the…
- 59:57Tad Eggleston: the,
- 1:00:02Tad Eggleston: blind cerebral palsy.
- 1:00:05Tad Eggleston: And Cloris Leachman plays the, elderly English one.
- 1:00:10Tad Eggleston: Huh. Who's our fun one for… oh, this is another Kirk Cameron one.
- 1:00:17Tad Eggleston: Andrea's story, a hitchhiking tragedy. A teenage girl is traumatized after being assaulted by a stranger from whom she hitched a ride.
- 1:00:27Phil: Oof.
- 1:00:28Tyler Johnson: Ew.
- 1:00:29Tad Eggleston: sarah Jessica Parker?
- 1:00:33Tad Eggleston: was in the almost royal family. Family inherits a house on a tiny island between Canada and the U.S, and is not the jurisdiction of either country.
- 1:00:46Phil: Well…
- 1:00:48Phil: That seems, like, way off-topic compared to the rest. Like, something maybe kind of nice happens to you compared to.
- 1:00:55Tad Eggleston: I went for a freaking out.
- 1:00:56Phil: It's holy shit.
- 1:00:58Tad Eggleston: Okay, we got a double whammy in this one. Michelle Pfeiffer and Val Kilmer…
- 1:01:04Phil: Mmm.
- 1:01:04Tad Eggleston: star in One Too Many.
- 1:01:07Tad Eggleston: Four high school friends find their lives changed forever when one of the friends drives drunk with devastating results.
- 1:01:17Tyler Johnson: I know.
- 1:01:19Tyler Johnson: Driving drunk?
- 1:01:21Tad Eggleston: I know, I know.
- 1:01:22Phil: Just don't do it.
- 1:01:23Tad Eggleston: Tomei, Marissa Tomei, and Supermom's Daughter, career-driven mother, and her daughter don't see eye to eye when it comes to the daughter's future plans.
- 1:01:36Phil: Marissa Toomey was probably the daughter at that point?
- 1:01:39Tyler Johnson: Probably? Yeah.
- 1:01:41Tad Eggleston: That's… that's just the ones that I've… Whoopi Goldberg hosted a number of them.
- 1:01:46Phil: Wow.
- 1:01:47Tad Eggleston: Oh, it looks like Freddie Prinze Jr. was in one?
- 1:01:51Phil: So these, these were, these were… this was a star-studded event.
- 1:01:54Tad Eggleston: Well, I mean, it's 70s and early 80s, so, like, nobody knew who they were. I mean, like I said, it was a weird launch pad for a lot of people.
- 1:02:03Phil: Yeah.
- 1:02:04Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 1:02:06Phil: I really left a cultural impression.
- 1:02:08Tad Eggleston: like, a lot of the Cosby kids and Dana Plato from Different Strokes.
- 1:02:17Tad Eggleston: All in one's Jennifer Jason Lee was in one.
- 1:02:20Tad Eggleston: River Phoenix? Let's see what River Phoenix was in.
- 1:02:25Tad Eggleston: I feel like a River Phoenix one has gotta be great.
- 1:02:29Tad Eggleston: Of course! Backwards! The riddle of Dyslexia. 13-year-old boy has problems reading.
- 1:02:38Tad Eggleston: Which his teachers attribute to laziness, and is later discovered that he has dyslexia.
- 1:02:43Phil: Wow.
- 1:02:47Tad Eggleston: Val Kilmer, we already… we already found his… Kira Sedgwick was in one, Madeline.
- 1:02:53Tyler Johnson: Wow.
- 1:02:53Tad Eggleston: was in one… so sometimes they actually had, like…
- 1:02:58Tad Eggleston: Legit people as their… as their, like… Adults.
- 1:03:07Phil: Well, I mean, I'd have to imagine Cloris Leachman was known by then, you know?
- 1:03:11Tad Eggleston: Right, right, right.
- 1:03:15Tad Eggleston: Bonnie Raitt played herself in one.
- 1:03:19Tad Eggleston: Wait a minute, we gotta check this one out. Jessica Alba.
- 1:03:24Tad Eggleston: In 1996.
- 1:03:26Tyler Johnson: That's pretty recent.
- 1:03:27Tad Eggleston: Too soon for Jeff.
- 1:03:31Tad Eggleston: A high school senior finds his future plans turns upside down when his girlfriend tells him she is pregnant.
- 1:03:45Tyler Johnson: Crazy.
- 1:03:47Tad Eggleston: Also from 1996, Lauryn Hill.
- 1:03:52Tad Eggleston: In Daddy's Girl?
- 1:03:55Phil: Kind of like Sound app.
- 1:03:57Tad Eggleston: Nope. Her father abandoned 6-year-old Alicia 10 years ago. Now a family wedding presents a chance for her to forge a relationship with him, but it means crossing her mother, who still hasn't forgiven him for walking out on them.
- 1:04:14Phil: Not nearly as bad as I thought.
- 1:04:16Tad Eggleston: Yeah… I mean, given some of the ones so far, I mean…
- 1:04:21Phil: Yeah, I was ready for the worst, you know.
- 1:04:24Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:04:25Phil: feeling myself.
- 1:04:30Phil: So, so when are… when are you gonna spearhead the comic book relaunch of Afternoon Special, Tad?
- 1:04:35Tad Eggleston: I, I don't know, I don't know. I almost feel like we should, though.
- 1:04:40Tad Eggleston: Will Wheaton was in one in 1989. No way.
- 1:04:44Phil: So he was… he was still… he was still in diapers?
- 1:04:47Tyler Johnson: He was Wesley Crusher? No, he wasn't yet.
- 1:04:49Phil: Yeah. That's what I'm saying.
- 1:04:51Tad Eggleston: Post. I mean, this is probably post Stand By Me. Correct. My dad can't… this is on point. My dad can't be crazy, can he? A teenage boy is unable to deal with his schizophrenic father.
- 1:05:06Phil: Oh, yeah, there it is.
- 1:05:09Phil: Yeah, there's bits of that in this.
- 1:05:10Tad Eggleston: And that's… that's with Mash's Loretta Witt as his mother. Or Loretta Swit, rather, as his mother.
- 1:05:18Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:05:19Tyler Johnson: She just passed away, right?
- 1:05:21Tad Eggleston: You did.
- 1:05:22Tad Eggleston: She did.
- 1:05:23Tyler Johnson: It's too bad, I like MASH. I like MASH a lot.
- 1:05:26Tad Eggleston: I do too. Carole King!
- 1:05:29Tad Eggleston: Oh my god!
- 1:05:31Tyler Johnson: Carole King is in it.
- 1:05:33Tad Eggleston: Carole King was in 1991.
- 1:05:38Tad Eggleston: It's only rock and roll. Teenage girl finds her song lyrics being scrutinized when some people find them too suggestive.
- 1:05:50Tyler Johnson: Funny.
- 1:05:51Tad Eggleston: Oh, Davey Jones was in that one, too.
- 1:05:55Phil: Wasn't he.
- 1:05:56Tad Eggleston: them as themselves.
- 1:05:57Phil: Wasn't he a ghost pirate by then, though? That was kind of hard to catch on film.
- 1:06:01Tyler Johnson: Baum.
- 1:06:02Tad Eggleston: Oh, he's a monkey.
- 1:06:03Tyler Johnson: He's a monkey!
- 1:06:05Phil: So…
- 1:06:06Tyler Johnson: Hey, hey, we're.
- 1:06:07Phil: I was about, I was trying to figure out, so he was throwing banana peels on set?
- 1:06:11Tyler Johnson: Funny.
- 1:06:13Tyler Johnson: That's a good one.
- 1:06:16Tyler Johnson: Alright.
- 1:06:17Tyler Johnson: Where are we at here?
- 1:06:18Tad Eggleston: We should probably… Felicity Huffman was in one as Flicka Huffman?
- 1:06:24Tad Eggleston: Which… which tells you exactly how young she… it was in 1978, a home run for love.
- 1:06:32Tyler Johnson: Alright.
- 1:06:33Tyler Johnson: get in 1947.
- 1:06:35Tad Eggleston: a young white boy and an elderly black man enjoy a warm and wonderful friendship based on their mutual love of the Brooklyn Dodgers and Jackie Robinson.
- 1:06:46Phil: I had a feeling it was good.
- 1:06:47Tad Eggleston: That doesn't sound problematic at all.
- 1:06:51Tyler Johnson: Tad, I'm giving you the bell. This is the,
- 1:06:54Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:06:55Tyler Johnson: they're a.
- 1:06:55Phil: Ding, ding, ding.
- 1:06:57Phil: I couldn't hear it. No, one more, just one more.
- 1:06:59Tyler Johnson: Hold on.
- 1:07:00Phil: One more day.
- 1:07:01Phil: Hold up to your mic, hold up to your mic.
- 1:07:04Tyler Johnson: Can you hear it?
- 1:07:04Phil: No.
- 1:07:05Tad Eggleston: No, it's getting, it's getting noise canceled.
- 1:07:09Tad Eggleston: Books I hope, will be spectacular. FML number 8 from Kelly Sudakonic, David.
- 1:07:13Phil: Nope.
- 1:07:13Tad Eggleston: at Dark Horse Comics. Junk punch number one. Just exactly what it… it's about a girl who punches people in their junk. I am so excited.

- 1:08:38Phil: Afternoon specials?

- 1:08:41Phil: My giant-sized trade waiter graphic novel pick is gonna be Sleep from Xander Cannon at Image Comics.

- 1:08:59Tyler Johnson: Yup.
- 1:09:00Tad Eggleston: Oh.
- 1:09:00Tyler Johnson: dark.

- 1:09:03Tad Eggleston: East Phoenix.
- 1:09:05Tad Eggleston: was… was now known as Joaquin.
- 1:09:09Tyler Johnson: Joaquin, yeah.
- 1:09:10Tad Eggleston: Right, right. Was also, in backwards, the riddle of Dyslexia.
- 1:09:14Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 1:09:20Tad Eggleston: I mean, like, the problem is they're just, oh, Joey Travolta was in one.
- 1:09:26Tyler Johnson: Go ahead.
- 1:09:26Tad Eggleston: I wonder if that means I'll find John further down the list.
- 1:09:30Tyler Johnson: You might.
- 1:09:32Tyler Johnson: I begly…
- 1:09:32Tad Eggleston: Junior?
- 1:09:34Tyler Johnson: Ed Bagley Jr.
- 1:09:34Phil: I need to see Ed Bagley Sr.
- 1:09:37Phil: Ed Begley, senior at Boston.
- 1:09:39Tyler Johnson: Alright, I'm gonna take us out, guys, cause I need to go to a meeting.

- 1:09:48Tyler Johnson: Hey, it's not a big business, it's a small business, but I still need to be there.
- 1:09:52Phil: It's a big little business.
- 1:09:53Tyler Johnson: As the face of our store, yeah.
- 1:09:57Tyler Johnson: Okay, so, thanks for listening, everybody, and we will catch you guys after the next page.
- 1:10:03Tyler Johnson: Later!
- 1:10:05Tad Eggleston: Or we could watch Frank Whaley in Seasonal Differences. The separation of church and state is examined when a Christmas nativity scene.
- 1:10:16Phil: Why, why am I worried?
- 1:10:17Tad Eggleston: Played at a high school.
- 1:10:18Phil: Why am I worried about how Afternoon Special is going to rule on the separation of church and state?
- 1:10:23Tad Eggleston: Sparks debate and protest from the student body.
- 1:10:27Phil: He took…
