- 3:42Speaker 4: Hi a sheriff.
- 3:43Speaker 3: Hello, Sheriff Taber Well, lovely dog, Nick Carr and Petsy Golden.
- 3:47Speaker 3: What are you two doing out this way while we
- 3:49Speaker 3: run our way back home from California?
- 3:51Speaker 2: Share and since we had to come through Texas anyway?
- 3:53Speaker 2: I reminded Nick of that invitation you gave us three
- 3:56Speaker 2: years ago.
- 3:57Speaker 4: Remember, sure, I remember?
- 3:59Speaker 7: And you got here just at the right time. We
- 4:01Speaker 7: had a murder last night.
- 4:03Speaker 3: On a white sheriff. This is purely a social visit.
- 4:05Speaker 2: A murder here in Plain City.
- 4:07Speaker 7: About ten miles easter. Here a big oil man from
- 4:10Speaker 7: Dallas name Leonard Atwell.
- 4:12Speaker 4: He was shot and killed by some hitchhiker.
- 4:15Speaker 2: How do you know it was a hitchhiker, sheriff well,
- 4:17Speaker 2: because we know at Well started out from Dallas alone.
- 4:20Speaker 4: And when he we found.
- 4:22Speaker 7: The body was behind the wheel of his car with
- 4:24Speaker 7: powder burns and a bullet hole in the right side
- 4:26Speaker 7: of his head.
- 4:27Speaker 4: That sounds more like suicide. No, no, it couldn't have
- 4:30Speaker 4: been that.
- 4:31Speaker 7: The gun was gone, so was at once money, his watch,
- 4:34Speaker 7: and the big gold signet ring that.
- 4:36Speaker 4: They all was war. You found any clues yet? No,
- 4:39Speaker 4: I can't tell yet.
- 4:40Speaker 7: I had everything that was in the car brought up
- 4:42Speaker 7: here to my office and spread them out on those
- 4:44Speaker 7: big tables over there.
- 4:45Speaker 4: Come on, I'll show you. I put the tools from
- 4:50Speaker 4: the car in this table here. See now what I
- 4:54Speaker 4: use this piece of rubber tubing for? Yeah, SU's me
- 4:58Speaker 4: Now over here the he was clothes, he was aware,
- 5:01Speaker 4: I see.
- 5:03Speaker 3: And there's another piece of adhesive tape. Well, that was
- 5:05Speaker 3: on his right hand. There was a little scratch there.
- 5:09Speaker 3: And look at this piece of tape. See that flaw
- 5:11Speaker 3: on the weed where it was torn off the room?
- 5:13Speaker 3: Ooh yeah, thing like that might be a clue.
- 5:16Speaker 4: Sure. Now on this table here I got his.
- 5:19Speaker 7: Suitcases and the stuff that was in him closed mostly m.
- 5:23Speaker 2: This looks interesting. Last will and testament of Leonard frank Atwell.
- 5:28Speaker 4: Yeah, he left everything to his wife in Detroit. Thought
- 5:31Speaker 4: he was from Dallas. Well he was, but he deserted his.
- 5:33Speaker 3: Wife in Detroit eighteen years ago. There's a letter there
- 5:37Speaker 3: in that envelope marked to be opened in case of
- 5:39Speaker 3: my death.
- 5:40Speaker 4: Asked the letter forgive him and all that stuff. Looks mean.
- 5:42Speaker 4: He must have been carrying that around a long time. Yeah,
- 5:44Speaker 4: I guess so.
- 5:45Speaker 2: I suppose a man like that carried a lot of insurance.
- 5:48Speaker 3: One hundred and fifty thousand dollars Worth College took out
- 5:51Speaker 3: the polacy only a couple of months ago, right here
- 5:53Speaker 3: in plaint City, by the way.
- 5:54Speaker 4: One hundred and fifty thousand dollars.
- 5:56Speaker 3: Who gets it, Well the wife, I guess she's so aware.
- 6:00Speaker 4: And the policy's made out to the state. Hey, Sheriff,
- 6:03Speaker 4: I don't see any first aid kid here. No, there
- 6:04Speaker 4: wasn't the one in the car.
- 6:06Speaker 3: Just that stuff you see here, and then where they
- 6:08Speaker 3: got that strip of at east of Safe. It's perfectly clean.
- 6:10Speaker 3: Couldn't have had it on more than a few minutes.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Well, maybe when he cut his hand he stopped at
- 6:14Speaker 2: a filling station or a lunch room, and they fixed
- 6:16Speaker 2: it up for him.
- 6:17Speaker 7: Say, Patsy, now that sure sounds reasonable.
- 6:19Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 6:19Speaker 3: Maybe if you can find that filling station or lunch room,
- 6:21Speaker 3: you can get a description of the man who was
- 6:22Speaker 3: writing with that.
- 6:23Speaker 4: Well just before he was killed.
- 6:24Speaker 7: Say that's a great idea, I'll do that.
- 6:27Speaker 4: Couldn't have driven more than a few miles without getting the.
- 6:29Speaker 3: Tape, soil, and if he should be all I'm sorry
- 6:31Speaker 3: to buddy in, Sheriff.
- 6:32Speaker 7: That's okay, buck, folks, this is Buck Henderson, my depity.
- 6:37Speaker 4: That's mister Carter and miss Boying. How do you do?
- 6:40Speaker 4: How do you do?
- 6:41Speaker 2: Buck?
- 6:41Speaker 4: And this telegram just coming. I thought it might be important.
- 6:44Speaker 4: Oh thank you Buck? Oh say Buck.
- 6:46Speaker 7: Yeah, Sheriff, I want you to hop in your car
- 6:48Speaker 7: and start out on the highway toward Dallas. Stop at
- 6:51Speaker 7: every filling station in the lunch room along the way,
- 6:54Speaker 7: and find out if at well stopped there last night.
- 6:57Speaker 7: Good gravysh Sheriff, Dallas is two hundred and ninety mile
- 7:00Speaker 7: Never mind.
- 7:00Speaker 4: You just do what I well, I'll be dogged something wrong.
- 7:05Speaker 7: Why this telegram is from the chief of police in Dallas.
- 7:08Speaker 7: You see, I wired him to send someone out to
- 7:10Speaker 7: Atwell's home address and tell.
- 7:12Speaker 4: The folks there what had happened. Well, well, the chief
- 7:15Speaker 4: says they ain't no such address.
- 7:16Speaker 7: It's a vacant lot.
- 7:26Speaker 3: We came out here to see you, Colonel Gardner, because
- 7:29Speaker 3: you knew mister Atwell better than anyone.
- 7:31Speaker 4: In the country.
- 7:32Speaker 3: Well, yes, and of course, of our business dealers we
- 7:35Speaker 3: became very close friends. His death has been a terrible
- 7:38Speaker 3: shock to me. You have any idea why he should
- 7:40Speaker 3: have given a false address, No, ovid, I'm sure it
- 7:42Speaker 3: wasn't done with any intent to see, I've.
- 7:44Speaker 8: Never known a more honorable gentleman than Leonard that Will.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Oh, then you didn't know he deserted his wife.
- 7:50Speaker 4: His wife, Hathwell told me he was a bachelor.
- 7:53Speaker 7: Well, you'll get a chance to meet the bachelor's wife
- 7:56Speaker 7: this afternoon.
- 7:57Speaker 4: She's coming here. Yep.
- 7:58Speaker 7: When I notified of his death, she wired back that
- 8:01Speaker 7: she was taking the next plane. Colonel Gardner, would you
- 8:04Speaker 7: mind telling us the nature of your business dealings with mister.
- 8:06Speaker 4: Radwell, Not at all.
- 8:07Speaker 3: He bought some oil lisa from me, one hundred and
- 8:10Speaker 3: thirty thousand dollars worth, but he didn't sign those leases
- 8:12Speaker 3: over to him without getting the money, did you, As a.
- 8:14Speaker 4: Matter of fact, it did.
- 8:16Speaker 3: He gave me a certified check for forty thousand at
- 8:18Speaker 3: the time, and he was on his way here last
- 8:20Speaker 3: night to pay the balance and take up his note.
- 8:22Speaker 2: Do you mean the hitchhiker who killed him and got
- 8:24Speaker 2: away with ninety thousand dollars?
- 8:25Speaker 4: Oh, no, miss Warre, And it wouldn't have been in cash.
- 8:28Speaker 4: Of course. It's sure to be a warrant to you, colonel,
- 8:31Speaker 4: not to go picking up folks on the road.
- 8:33Speaker 3: I'm afraid I'm too old to change my ways now
- 8:35Speaker 3: share you make a habit of doing that, Colonel. Why
- 8:38Speaker 3: every tramp in the country knows that this ranch is
- 8:41Speaker 3: good for a meal and a night's lodging. My last winter,
- 8:45Speaker 3: another hobo got sick and died here, and the colonel
- 8:48Speaker 3: even paid.
- 8:49Speaker 4: For his funeral.
- 8:50Speaker 3: Well, Sheriff, there is little enough that we can do
- 8:52Speaker 3: for those less fortunate than ourselves.
- 8:55Speaker 8: Oh excuse me, Hello, yeah, yes, he's here. Just a minute,
- 9:02Speaker 8: were you here?
- 9:03Speaker 4: Oh? Thanks, colonel, let's be from the courthouse.
- 9:06Speaker 7: Hello, Yes, this is sheriff table you did when Yeah, fine, fine,
- 9:15Speaker 7: I'll come right back to town.
- 9:18Speaker 4: We got him murderer. Yep, caught him try to pedal
- 9:21Speaker 4: at wells ringing watch.
- 9:22Speaker 2: Isn't somebody from around here?
- 9:24Speaker 4: No, it's some old bum just like I thought. I'm
- 9:27Speaker 4: sorry to rush off, Colonel, but we got a killer
- 9:29Speaker 4: to take care of.
- 9:39Speaker 5: Oh you got me wrong, Chief, found ust. I never
- 9:42Speaker 5: croked nobody.
- 9:42Speaker 4: And where'd you get his watch and ring?
- 9:44Speaker 7: I told you I have phone and that suit he
- 9:46Speaker 7: was were and I suppose you found that too.
- 9:48Speaker 5: Yeah, that's right, Chief, It was all rolled up in
- 9:51Speaker 5: a bundle like at the side of the road.
- 9:53Speaker 7: Oh look you, whatever your name is, it's Morgan, Chief Morgan.
- 9:56Speaker 4: Okay, Morgan.
- 9:57Speaker 7: Now why don't you open up and tell us what
- 10:00Speaker 7: I did with the gun.
- 10:00Speaker 5: I never had no gun. I'm a bumb sure, but
- 10:04Speaker 5: I never hurt nobody in all my life.
- 10:06Speaker 7: You hitched a ride with a gray haired guy in
- 10:08Speaker 7: a big sit down last night, didn't you.
- 10:10Speaker 4: No.
- 10:11Speaker 7: No, I never pulled the gun, and you made him
- 10:13Speaker 7: drive off on a side rod.
- 10:14Speaker 5: I've never seen the guy on it.
- 10:16Speaker 7: And after you've killed him and you took his watch
- 10:18Speaker 7: and ring, then you opened up his suitcases and got
- 10:20Speaker 7: yourself a nusolu clothes.
- 10:22Speaker 5: No, no, no, I swear I didn't. Oh hey, look, chief,
- 10:27Speaker 5: you wouldn't send me to the pen for something I
- 10:29Speaker 5: didn't do with you.
- 10:30Speaker 7: It ain't the pen you're headed for, brother, it's the
- 10:33Speaker 7: electric chair.
- 10:44Speaker 4: But Nitchie's bound to be the guy.
- 10:46Speaker 7: How else would he get that Wells watching ring in
- 10:49Speaker 7: those clothes.
- 10:50Speaker 3: They were at Wells too, okay, Sheriff, But why didn't
- 10:52Speaker 3: they have any money in his pocket?
- 10:53Speaker 4: You said after, I'll always carried a lot of cash.
- 10:56Speaker 7: Yes, but you didn't think he really did find that stuff?
- 10:58Speaker 4: Do you think now? I saw a man trying to
- 11:01Speaker 4: lie on in a bad situation. It was Morgan.
- 11:03Speaker 3: But well, that's pretty slim evidence in whish they convict
- 11:06Speaker 3: him of murder. He s, yeah, ser I found it
- 11:09Speaker 3: the place where at Well got the adhesion tath.
- 11:10Speaker 4: Well, I don't know about that.
- 11:11Speaker 9: But he stopped at a filling station about thirty miles
- 11:14Speaker 9: up the line and had the oil change in his
- 11:16Speaker 9: car while I was eating dinner. Good work, Buck, And
- 11:18Speaker 9: there was somebody with him too, sort of an old
- 11:20Speaker 9: gent with white hair.
- 11:21Speaker 4: Whiney Morgan, I knew it.
- 11:23Speaker 9: I got the kid from the filling station out in
- 11:24Speaker 9: the office. You want to talk to him.
- 11:26Speaker 7: I can't right now, not right now, but miss Atwell's
- 11:29Speaker 7: doing about five minutes and I gotta go down in
- 11:32Speaker 7: the meter.
- 11:33Speaker 4: Come on, Nick, the.
- 11:44Speaker 3: Undertaking parlors are at the back of the store. Here,
- 11:46Speaker 3: miss Adwain, I want you to identify the body, just.
- 11:50Speaker 4: For the record.
- 11:51Speaker 2: I can't believe it. After all these years, poor Leonard.
- 11:55Speaker 3: Judging by the letter he left, he must have still
- 11:57Speaker 3: thought a great deal of you, missus Apwell.
- 11:59Speaker 2: Yes, I don't spose he ever married again, or he'd
- 12:01Speaker 2: have left the money to his second wife.
- 12:03Speaker 3: It's quite a pile too, one hundred and fifty thousand
- 12:06Speaker 3: on the insurance alone.
- 12:07Speaker 10: I can't imagine Leonard getting rich white twenty years ago.
- 12:11Speaker 4: He couldn't even.
- 12:12Speaker 7: Hold a job right through this door man the blue
- 12:16Speaker 7: casket over there.
- 12:17Speaker 10: I just think everybody used to call him lazy and shiftless.
- 12:22Speaker 2: I guess now they'll.
- 12:24Speaker 4: Madame misus Atwell, why that's not not your husband, or.
- 12:31Speaker 10: Of course that's Leonard, but what well, Naturally he's changed
- 12:37Speaker 10: a lot in eighteen years, But that's definitely Leonard at Well.
- 12:42Speaker 4: Sure it is, Nick, I know him myself.
- 12:45Speaker 3: Everybody and tells you all right, then, since we've finotified
- 12:48Speaker 3: the victim. Suppose I go back to the jail and
- 12:50Speaker 3: see what the kid from the filling station can tell us.
- 13:00Speaker 3: You're sure you'd know this man if you saw him again, Whittaker.
- 13:02Speaker 5: Oh sure sure.
- 13:04Speaker 6: Him and mister Atwell stood around waiting while I finished
- 13:06Speaker 6: changing the oil, and I got a right good look
- 13:09Speaker 6: at him.
- 13:09Speaker 7: When my deputy brings the suspect in here, I don't
- 13:14Speaker 7: want you to say anythink, can I ask you?
- 13:15Speaker 4: Oh? No, no, no, sir, either way, did you notice
- 13:17Speaker 4: the script of it?
- 13:18Speaker 3: He's a tape of mister Atwell's right hand.
- 13:20Speaker 6: And he's well, I don't think he had none, or
- 13:23Speaker 6: I don't noticed it when when he paid me for
- 13:24Speaker 6: the oil.
- 13:25Speaker 5: Here they are, O Chief, Chief, you're gonna let me
- 13:28Speaker 5: go now. That's why you had me brung in here,
- 13:31Speaker 5: ain't it? So as you can turn me loose?
- 13:32Speaker 4: Huh?
- 13:33Speaker 7: Well, that all depends why he you still see that
- 13:36Speaker 7: you didn't hit? You ride last night with a gray
- 13:38Speaker 7: haired man in the big seat.
- 13:40Speaker 5: O Chief, So help me. I've never seen the garden
- 13:42Speaker 5: of the carneal.
- 13:43Speaker 4: How about that winker? No, no, he's alas Chef.
- 13:47Speaker 6: That's the fellow that was with mister Atwell, when the
- 13:49Speaker 6: top of the filling station, I'll swear it on a
- 13:51Speaker 6: stack of bibles of foot high.
- 13:59Speaker 3: With the filling station attendants identification, the case against Whitey
- 14:02Speaker 3: Morgan seems complete. We'll see what happens in just a minute.
- 14:10Speaker 3: Now back to the case of the Unexpected Corpse. Today's
- 14:14Speaker 3: adventure with Nick Carter brought to you by new post
- 14:17Speaker 3: war old Dutch cleanser. After a sleepless night in the
- 14:20Speaker 3: county jail, Whitey Morgan has sent word that he's ready
- 14:23Speaker 3: to tell the truth, and the sheriff has asked Nick
- 14:25Speaker 3: to accompany him to white his cell. Now, let's have
- 14:28Speaker 3: the confession. Whitey, you admit you were lying about where
- 14:31Speaker 3: you got this suit of clothes.
- 14:33Speaker 8: She chief.
- 14:35Speaker 5: I didn't find him. This fellow's the croaky Give to
- 14:39Speaker 5: me what he did so help me. Right after he
- 14:42Speaker 5: picked me up on the highway, he said it was
- 14:44Speaker 5: an old suit that was give him too tight for him.
- 14:46Speaker 4: That suit was brand News.
- 14:48Speaker 5: I don't care, that's what he told me.
- 14:49Speaker 7: I suppose the shirt and socks and the necktie they
- 14:52Speaker 7: were too tight from too.
- 14:53Speaker 5: He said, I need them to go with a suit.
- 14:56Speaker 5: Then later when it got good and dark. He stopped
- 14:59Speaker 5: the car so as I could get out and put
- 15:01Speaker 5: the market.
- 15:01Speaker 4: And that's when you're killed him.
- 15:03Speaker 5: No, no, honest, chief, that's when he tried to kill me.
- 15:06Speaker 4: Oh wait a minute, he did.
- 15:08Speaker 5: I put on the clothes he give me, and then
- 15:11Speaker 5: when I was getting back in the car, he slugged
- 15:13Speaker 5: me with a wrench. And I've seen it coming too
- 15:16Speaker 5: late to duck and that's all I know to come
- 15:20Speaker 5: to and a ditch someplace.
- 15:21Speaker 4: Else, someplace else.
- 15:22Speaker 5: Yeah, he must have hauled me there in the car
- 15:25Speaker 5: and dumped me out for dead.
- 15:26Speaker 4: Yeah. So he got you all dressed up so you
- 15:29Speaker 4: die happy. Huh. He even gave you his watch and ring.
- 15:32Speaker 5: I don't know nothing about the watch and ring when
- 15:35Speaker 5: I come to.
- 15:35Speaker 3: I was wearing them, Whitey, when you were in the
- 15:39Speaker 3: car with that, Well, did you notice a piece of it?
- 15:41Speaker 4: He'sa a tape on his right hand.
- 15:43Speaker 5: Ugh, No, there was nothing on his hand.
- 15:46Speaker 4: You're sure? Yeah? What difference does it make? Nick?
- 15:50Speaker 7: You're not gonna swallow this crazy story?
- 15:52Speaker 4: Or why didn't you tell us? Says it first? Whitey?
- 15:54Speaker 5: Well, when the chief here said the guy has been croaked,
- 15:58Speaker 5: I got scared. Did they believe me.
- 16:02Speaker 7: You bet I wouldn't and take it from me, brother,
- 16:05Speaker 7: neither will the jewelry.
- 16:17Speaker 4: Hi, Sheriff Hi, Nick to passy right? Well? Where have
- 16:21Speaker 4: you two been all afternoon? Oh?
- 16:23Speaker 2: Lots of places? The post office, the photographers, the garage
- 16:26Speaker 2: where you put at Well's car?
- 16:27Speaker 3: What'd you go there for? Wanted to check the speedometer?
- 16:30Speaker 3: It register's nine four hundred and eighty five.
- 16:32Speaker 2: Miles And that boy changed the oil in the car
- 16:34Speaker 2: at nine four hundred and twenty seven according to the
- 16:37Speaker 2: sticker inside the door.
- 16:38Speaker 3: So what well from that filling station to where the
- 16:40Speaker 3: body was found as a distance of twenty four miles
- 16:42Speaker 3: from that spot to the garage here is ten miles.
- 16:45Speaker 4: That's thirty four all together.
- 16:46Speaker 2: Yeah, but the car had been driven fifty eight miles.
- 16:49Speaker 4: See what I mean?
- 16:50Speaker 3: Sheriff Atwell must have driven twenty four miles out of
- 16:52Speaker 3: his way for that piece of adiece of tape.
- 16:54Speaker 7: For the love of Pete, Nick, I think if you're
- 16:56Speaker 7: touched on that subject of the tape.
- 16:58Speaker 2: We found something else, Sheriff. Yeh, a spot of blood
- 17:02Speaker 2: on the floor in the rear of Atwell's car.
- 17:03Speaker 3: I'm going to have it analyzed to see if it
- 17:05Speaker 3: could possibly have come from that cut on Whitey's head.
- 17:07Speaker 7: Oh, Nick, don't tell me that you're take any stock
- 17:10Speaker 7: in that wild story of his. Why any five year
- 17:12Speaker 7: old kid could make up a better lie than.
- 17:14Speaker 2: That, and so could Whitey unless it happens to be true.
- 17:18Speaker 4: But he's got to be lile. Why would that will
- 17:21Speaker 4: give all this stuff to a tramp then hit him
- 17:23Speaker 4: over the head and throw them out of the car.
- 17:25Speaker 3: Look, let me ask you a couple of questions, sheriff.
- 17:27Speaker 3: He said, the suitcases were both neatly packed and locked.
- 17:30Speaker 3: Why would Whitey repacked them after killing at Well?
- 17:32Speaker 4: A steel in the clothes?
- 17:33Speaker 3: Why?
- 17:33Speaker 2: And what happened to the money Atwell always carried?
- 17:36Speaker 4: Okay, okay, I give up. But do you know the asses?
- 17:40Speaker 3: No, not all of them, but I can guess it
- 17:42Speaker 3: a few. For instance, Atwell took out a lot of
- 17:45Speaker 3: insurance only two months.
- 17:47Speaker 4: Ago, payable to his estate.
- 17:48Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 17:48Speaker 3: Now, suppose that Well planned the stage a fake accident
- 17:51Speaker 3: for the car, And suppose he planned on having Whitey's
- 17:53Speaker 3: body found behind the wheel, wearing his clothes.
- 17:55Speaker 4: His watching his ring. Yes, but he couldn't get away
- 17:58Speaker 4: with it.
- 17:58Speaker 3: Everybody in town new at Yeah, Whitey and hat Well
- 18:01Speaker 3: were both about the same size and age.
- 18:03Speaker 4: They both had gray hair, and if.
- 18:04Speaker 3: The body were badly burned, burned, remember that piece of
- 18:07Speaker 3: rubber tubing, it'd been just a thing for siphoning gasoline
- 18:11Speaker 3: out of the tank to be sure that the fire
- 18:12Speaker 3: burned everything it was supposed to.
- 18:13Speaker 2: Why every insurance company knows that tricks here if it's
- 18:16Speaker 2: been done one hundred times.
- 18:17Speaker 7: Yes, but Atwell didn't do that. There wasn't any accident.
- 18:20Speaker 7: The car wasn't.
- 18:21Speaker 3: Burned right, Maybe something went wrong at the last minute
- 18:24Speaker 3: and the plan was changed. Remember how surprise missus Atwell
- 18:27Speaker 3: looked when she saw the body.
- 18:28Speaker 4: Yes, I know, but she explained that.
- 18:30Speaker 3: Yes, since she has some more explaining to do, I've
- 18:33Speaker 3: been in touch with the Detroit police and the surprise
- 18:35Speaker 3: she got yesterday is nothing to the one I have
- 18:37Speaker 3: in store for her today.
- 18:49Speaker 4: This is Atwell. You recognize this picture? Well?
- 18:53Speaker 2: Where did you get that? The Detroit Police found it
- 18:56Speaker 2: in the bedroom of your apartment and transmitted it here
- 18:58Speaker 2: to Nick by wire photo.
- 19:00Speaker 4: Isn't that a picture of your husband? Well?
- 19:02Speaker 2: Yes, but what it was taken more than twenty years.
- 19:05Speaker 4: Ago and he let me see it, Nick, Yeah, yeah,
- 19:08Speaker 4: that's it.
- 19:09Speaker 7: Well, all right, But I wouldn't have known it unless
- 19:11Speaker 7: I was looking for the resemblance.
- 19:13Speaker 4: Now, look at this picture. What is it? An ear?
- 19:17Speaker 9: Right?
- 19:17Speaker 2: Here the left ear of Leonard Atwell and large fifty
- 19:20Speaker 2: times from that snapshot.
- 19:21Speaker 3: You see, Missus Atwell. Ears are as individual as fingerprints.
- 19:24Speaker 3: They never changed from birth to death except in size. Say,
- 19:27Speaker 3: I didn't know there and this here, Leonard Atwell's here
- 19:30Speaker 3: is an entirely different shape from that of the man
- 19:31Speaker 3: you identified yesterday as your husband.
- 19:33Speaker 4: All right, I lied about it. I knew that wasn't Leonard,
- 19:37Speaker 4: But Nick, it is Atwell. I know him myself.
- 19:42Speaker 2: You mean you knew the man who posed as Leonard Atwell.
- 19:45Speaker 2: I don't understand.
- 19:46Speaker 4: Why should anyone do that?
- 19:48Speaker 3: There's one obvious reason, missus Atwell one hundred and fifty
- 19:51Speaker 3: thousand dollars insurance money.
- 19:52Speaker 4: Hey, I get it, Nick.
- 19:55Speaker 3: He was going to fake the accident, like you said,
- 19:57Speaker 3: and split the money with her, but then she killed
- 20:00Speaker 3: in order to keep.
- 20:00Speaker 4: It off to hisself. You're accusing me of murder. You
- 20:03Speaker 4: better no, no, no, no, Shriff.
- 20:05Speaker 3: According to the Detroit Police, Missus Atwell was attending a
- 20:07Speaker 3: bridge party.
- 20:08Speaker 4: The night of the murder. I checked that angle.
- 20:09Speaker 7: Well, she could have hired somebody to do it for,
- 20:12Speaker 7: couldn't she.
- 20:12Speaker 3: Perhaps, But I don't think so. There was big money
- 20:15Speaker 3: behind this impersonation, Nick.
- 20:17Speaker 2: I think I have an idea. Didn't the colonel say
- 20:20Speaker 2: that he signed those oil leases over the at well?
- 20:22Speaker 3: Absolutely yes, in return for a check a promisory note
- 20:25Speaker 3: for the balance.
- 20:26Speaker 2: And maybe that was the real reason behind it, and
- 20:28Speaker 2: the insurance was only part of the steam to carry
- 20:30Speaker 2: out the idea that he was a rich man.
- 20:32Speaker 7: If you think he was cheating the colonel, you're barking
- 20:35Speaker 7: up the wrong tree, Patsy. Nobody gets ahead of that
- 20:38Speaker 7: old bird.
- 20:39Speaker 2: Yeah, but the dead man did get absolute title to
- 20:41Speaker 2: one hundred and thirty thousand dollars worth of oil leases,
- 20:44Speaker 2: and all he actually paid out was forty thousand.
- 20:47Speaker 7: Well, even if the colonel never gets another sin, he's
- 20:49Speaker 7: doing all right?
- 20:50Speaker 4: What do you mean why those leases ain't worth anything?
- 20:54Speaker 7: He couldn't have peddled him to anybody around here for
- 20:56Speaker 7: more than five.
- 20:56Speaker 4: Or ten thousand.
- 20:57Speaker 3: So that's it, mon passy, Hey, where you go look
- 21:01Speaker 3: for all of it? He's a tape. Here's my first aid, kid,
- 21:13Speaker 3: Mister Carter it's big one, isn't it.
- 21:15Speaker 4: Corner Ranch.
- 21:16Speaker 8: You never know what may happen, Miss Bowl.
- 21:18Speaker 3: May I look through the kit, Colonel Gardner, certainly, mister Carter,
- 21:21Speaker 3: I'd like to know why you're so interested. I'm interested
- 21:23Speaker 3: because the man who was murdered two nights ago had
- 21:25Speaker 3: a fresh trip of adhesive tape on his right hand,
- 21:28Speaker 3: and I'm wondering whether it came from here.
- 21:30Speaker 4: Well that Well never got to my rane. I told
- 21:33Speaker 4: you he was on his way.
- 21:34Speaker 3: I know that's what you said, Colonel. There was an
- 21:36Speaker 3: extra twenty four miles in this speedometer. In other words,
- 21:39Speaker 3: he must have made a side trip of twelve miles
- 21:41Speaker 3: and back.
- 21:41Speaker 2: And this wrench is exactly twelve miles off the main highway.
- 21:45Speaker 3: Are you calling me a liars or worse than that, Colonel,
- 21:50Speaker 3: I'm calling you a murderer.
- 21:52Speaker 4: Ridiculous. Leonard that Well was my friend.
- 21:55Speaker 3: The man who called himself Leonard ad Robe was your stooge.
- 21:58Speaker 3: He paid his expenses for four months while het up
- 22:00Speaker 3: the illusion of being a wealthy oil promoter.
- 22:01Speaker 4: You're out of your mind. Why should I do such
- 22:04Speaker 4: a thing so that.
- 22:05Speaker 3: He could take out a big life insurance policy payable
- 22:07Speaker 3: to his estate, and then make a will, starting with
- 22:09Speaker 3: the usual clause about paying all.
- 22:11Speaker 2: Just debts, meaning that promisory note.
- 22:14Speaker 3: You hole, colonel, there's a neat way to collect ninety
- 22:16Speaker 3: thousand dollars for your worthless oil leases your imaginal thing.
- 22:20Speaker 3: Maybe so, the way I see it, the plan went
- 22:23Speaker 3: like this. Atwell picked up somebody who roughly resembled him,
- 22:26Speaker 3: dressed him in his clothes.
- 22:27Speaker 4: They knocked him out.
- 22:28Speaker 3: This man was Whitey Morgan, who was to be found
- 22:30Speaker 3: dead in Atwell's car and would be taken for Atwell
- 22:33Speaker 3: because his body would be too burned for positive identification.
- 22:35Speaker 2: Then you and Atwell would share the money you would
- 22:37Speaker 2: collect from That was a state because of that note
- 22:40Speaker 2: for ninety thousand you held.
- 22:41Speaker 3: I went at Well with Morgan's unconscious body in his car,
- 22:44Speaker 3: came here to get your help in taking the accident.
- 22:47Speaker 3: You decided that a substitute wasn't as effective as a
- 22:49Speaker 3: real thing, so you.
- 22:50Speaker 4: Killed that will. This is ridiculous.
- 22:52Speaker 3: Then you emptied at Well's poets to make it look.
- 22:54Speaker 4: Like a robbery.
- 22:55Speaker 3: Then you took the unconscious Morgan miles away and dumped
- 22:58Speaker 3: him by the side of the highway, knowing he'd be
- 23:00Speaker 3: the logical suspect in that Well's murdered, and.
- 23:02Speaker 4: You didn't burn the car because it was no longer.
- 23:04Speaker 3: Necessary with a real act Well dead in it. How
- 23:07Speaker 3: do you expect to prove any such wild story? At
- 23:10Speaker 3: Well had no adhesive tape on his hand when he
- 23:12Speaker 3: picked up Morgan. He did have it when he was
- 23:14Speaker 3: found dead. If that tape came from your first aid kit,
- 23:17Speaker 3: it'll prove he was here.
- 23:18Speaker 4: After he had set Morgan up for the fake killing.
- 23:21Speaker 4: A very interesting theory, Carter, but not prove. You'll hand
- 23:25Speaker 4: me the.
- 23:25Speaker 3: Roll of adhesive tape from your kit. I think it'll
- 23:27Speaker 3: give me the proof I need.
- 23:30Speaker 4: Very well, all right, get your hands up, both of you.
- 23:37Speaker 2: Can he get a gun and the kit?
- 23:39Speaker 4: Yes, I put it.
- 23:40Speaker 3: There when I went out of the room to get
- 23:41Speaker 3: this kid, Carter. I thought there was something.
- 23:44Speaker 8: Odd about your wanting to inspect my first aid supplies.
- 23:47Speaker 3: Why because you remember the last time you used that
- 23:50Speaker 3: kit was just before the murder.
- 23:52Speaker 4: A very shrewd guess, mister Carter.
- 23:54Speaker 2: So you did kill that man, just as Nick said.
- 23:57Speaker 3: With this very gun. My dear, Too bad that you
- 24:01Speaker 3: have to be so clever, mister Carter.
- 24:03Speaker 2: What do you mean by that.
- 24:05Speaker 3: I mean that you two are the only people who
- 24:06Speaker 3: suspect I killed that stupid fool, so I'm going to
- 24:09Speaker 3: kill both of you right now. With his hands in
- 24:19Speaker 3: the air, Nick hasn't a chance of reaching his own
- 24:21Speaker 3: gun before Colonel Gardner's finger closes on the trigger. We'll
- 24:24Speaker 3: see what happens in just a minute now for the
- 24:27Speaker 3: conclusion of the Case of the Unexpected Corpse. Today's adventure
- 24:31Speaker 3: with Nick Carter roup.
- 24:32Speaker 4: To you by new post war old Dutch cleanser.
- 24:35Speaker 3: In the living room of Colonel Gardner's ranch house, Nick
- 24:38Speaker 3: and Patsy stand with their hands in the air, staring
- 24:40Speaker 3: at the revolver in the Colonel's hands as he says,
- 24:43Speaker 3: you two are the only ones who suspect I killed
- 24:45Speaker 3: that stupid fool, so I'm going to kill both of
- 24:48Speaker 3: you right now. You're wrong, Colonel. The sheriff knows all
- 24:51Speaker 3: about this. I told him not half an hour ago.
- 24:54Speaker 8: I'm too good a porker player to fall for a
- 24:56Speaker 8: bluff like that.
- 24:57Speaker 4: Carter, this is no bluff, Colonel.
- 24:58Speaker 7: Drop that can table, has Colonel ive when standing outside
- 25:02Speaker 7: at window.
- 25:03Speaker 3: That was a mighty interesting confession, and thanks for telling
- 25:06Speaker 3: us that this is the gun you killed your partner with.
- 25:08Speaker 2: Nick, You were right about this adhesive tape. It does
- 25:11Speaker 2: mash that strip on the dead man's hands. You can
- 25:12Speaker 2: tell by that same floor on Louise.
- 25:14Speaker 3: So even if we didn't have the gun, that would
- 25:16Speaker 3: prove he was here just before he was murdered.
- 25:18Speaker 7: You're pretty smart, Nick, No mistake.
- 25:21Speaker 3: By the way, Colonel, will you tell us why Atwill
- 25:23Speaker 3: or whatever his name was had that adhesive tape on
- 25:26Speaker 3: his hand?
- 25:26Speaker 4: He scratched it.
- 25:27Speaker 3: While he was getting his suitcase out of the luggage compartment.
- 25:30Speaker 3: Didn't amount to anything, but it is bleeding some Well, Colonel, you.
- 25:34Speaker 4: Ought to be right proud.
- 25:35Speaker 7: You'll go down in history is the first man who
- 25:38Speaker 7: ever hung himself with a piece of adhesive tape.
- 25:49Speaker 3: Well, Patsy, I hope we can get home without any
- 25:51Speaker 3: more distraction.
- 25:52Speaker 2: Uh huh, Nick, do you suppose he'll ever find out
- 25:55Speaker 2: what happened to the real Leonard at World?
- 25:58Speaker 4: Why, Patsy?
- 25:58Speaker 3: That came out in the colonel's confession, Remember the chriff
- 26:00Speaker 3: telling us about that old bum that died on the colonel's.
- 26:02Speaker 4: Ranch last winter.
- 26:04Speaker 2: He was lened at well.
- 26:05Speaker 3: Nobody else When the colonel went through his effects, he
- 26:07Speaker 3: found that letter to his wife asking who to forgive
- 26:09Speaker 3: him for deserting her eighteen years ago. Uh, that's why
- 26:11Speaker 3: the colonel got the idea for cashing in on those
- 26:13Speaker 3: worthless oil leases.
- 26:14Speaker 2: Then it's no wonder the force that will resemble the
- 26:16Speaker 2: picture of the real one. The colonel knew the type
- 26:18Speaker 2: of person he needed for the impersonation.
- 26:20Speaker 3: And they found him in Hollywood, a broken down movie
- 26:23Speaker 3: extra with a shady repetition.
- 26:25Speaker 2: You know, Nick, I bet he never knew to the
- 26:27Speaker 2: last minute that he was casting the corpse and the
- 26:30Speaker 2: colonel little drama.
- 26:31Speaker 3: Well, that corpse is an unexpected shock to almost everyone.
- 26:34Speaker 3: Missus Atwell expected it to be her husband. The impostor
- 26:37Speaker 3: expected it to be Whitey, And only the.
- 26:39Speaker 2: Colonel knew who the unexpected corpse really was, and he
- 26:43Speaker 2: wasn't telling.
- 26:53Speaker 3: And now, Nick, how about the adventure new post war
- 26:56Speaker 3: old Dutch cleanser is going to bring us next week? Well, Mike,
- 26:58Speaker 3: if you were a young man with all the money
- 27:00Speaker 3: you wanted, and if you had everything in the world
- 27:02Speaker 3: to live for, can you.
- 27:03Speaker 4: Think of any reason why you would want to die?
- 27:05Speaker 3: I can't think of a reason for wanting to die.
- 27:07Speaker 3: Under any circumstances.
- 27:08Speaker 2: Well, a young man named Miles Kincaid had a different attitude.
- 27:12Speaker 4: Yes, he was found drowned in a lake, and yet
- 27:14Speaker 4: he wasn't round in a lake.
- 27:15Speaker 2: And before the case was over, Nick uncovered the reason
- 27:18Speaker 2: for not just one, but for three mysterious deaths.
- 27:21Speaker 3: Well, it sounds as though we're in for a lot
- 27:23Speaker 3: of excitement as well as mystery.
- 27:24Speaker 4: What do you call the adventure, Nick? I call it
- 27:27Speaker 4: the Case of the Flowery Farewell.
- 27:35Speaker 3: Nick Carter, Master Detective is presented each week at this

- 28:53Speaker 11: And now let's get back into the show.
- 29:01Speaker 1: Welcome back. Well, there were some fairly obvious clues that
- 29:05Speaker 1: worked in, but overall I thought this was a decent
- 29:09Speaker 1: mystery that played out well, and I'm glad that Nick
- 29:13Speaker 1: had the police handy. That definitely does make sense because
- 29:19Speaker 1: at this stage of the show, every time Nick reveals
- 29:22Speaker 1: a murderer, the murderer pulls a gun on him or
- 29:26Speaker 1: in some other way sets up a death trap. However,
- 29:29Speaker 1: this is a small town villain, so not really in
- 29:33Speaker 1: the death trap thing. Just keep it nice and simple,
- 29:37Speaker 1: you do. I have to wonder why somebody would invite
- 29:41Speaker 1: Nick in for his expertise in solving murder and then
- 29:45Speaker 1: act when he's crazy when he starts acting on hunches
- 29:48Speaker 1: by that any rate that will actually do it for today?
