- 0:00Speaker 1: Back on the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show. We talked
- 0:03Speaker 1: to Dan Hurley for a bit. Now we got Alex
- 0:05Speaker 1: caravan with us from campus at stores and Alex, I'm
- 0:10Speaker 1: going to go back in history right now, four years
- 0:13Speaker 1: ago if you can remember this, What was your recruitment
- 0:17Speaker 1: like to Yukon. Did you have a lot of choices?
- 0:21Speaker 1: What did you have to think about when you were
- 0:23Speaker 1: deciding where am I going to go to college?
- 0:27Speaker 2: Yeah? I really had. I had a good amount of choices.
- 0:29Speaker 2: I think I was recruited pretty heavily by a couple
- 0:32Speaker 2: of high majors, but I felt like Yukon really wanted
- 0:35Speaker 2: me the most and they recruited me extremely hard. And
- 0:39Speaker 2: you know, I think some factors at consider was being
- 0:41Speaker 2: close to home. Yukon's obviously only like an hour away
- 0:44Speaker 2: from me. And then you just see the history when
- 0:46Speaker 2: you come in to the building, you see the national championships,
- 0:49Speaker 2: you see the pedigree, you see all the legends. Like
- 0:52Speaker 2: for me, that was just so hard to turn down.
- 0:54Speaker 2: On top of who coach Hurley and the coaches staff,
- 0:57Speaker 2: who they are as people, It just it just seem
- 1:00Speaker 2: like the obvious choice to me.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Yeah, So when you when you come into the building
- 1:04Speaker 1: and the worst center and you see where you're going
- 1:05Speaker 1: to be practicing, and you got all those pictures up
- 1:08Speaker 1: on the wall that could be intimidating. I mean, you're
- 1:12Speaker 1: You're standing among these giants and wondering, I'm guessing that
- 1:16Speaker 1: where am I going to fit into this whole thing?
- 1:19Speaker 2: No, definitely, I think you see all those legends and
- 1:21Speaker 2: you be like, can I be one of those? And
- 1:24Speaker 2: can I do the things that they did? But I
- 1:27Speaker 2: think the confidence gives you is that you've seen guys
- 1:29Speaker 2: like Ray Allen or a Mecca okafor or Andre Jammed,
- 1:34Speaker 2: just guys who've had successful MBA or college careers do
- 1:38Speaker 2: it at Yukon and you know you're going to be
- 1:41Speaker 2: in that same facility, You're going to be in the
- 1:42Speaker 2: same location. Why can't you do it?
- 1:44Speaker 1: So?
- 1:45Speaker 2: I think that just gives you a lot of confidence.
- 1:47Speaker 2: And just if I want to reach the goals that
- 1:49Speaker 2: I want to reach, and I've seen those players do it,
- 1:52Speaker 2: why can't I?
- 1:53Speaker 1: Yeah, I got I got you. Uh first impressions of
- 1:57Speaker 1: Dan Hurley be honest.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Now watch the first practice. My mom told me, She's like,
- 2:02Speaker 2: are you sure you want to play for them? Like,
- 2:05Speaker 2: how just how intense the practices are. Just you see
- 2:09Speaker 2: the yelling, you see the coach, and you see the
- 2:11Speaker 2: hard coaching. You know it could be a lot for
- 2:13Speaker 2: a player, But I thought, I've always heard stories of
- 2:16Speaker 2: how hard colleges and how difficult it is to make
- 2:19Speaker 2: that transition. So my mindset was just like, why not
- 2:22Speaker 2: go do it for a coach who does it the hardest,
- 2:25Speaker 2: does it the right way, and will push me past
- 2:28Speaker 2: limits that any other coach could do.
- 2:30Speaker 1: And did that happen your first year? I know you
- 2:33Speaker 1: came in January before you started actually playing the following fall,
- 2:37Speaker 1: but were you standing there at practice or after practice
- 2:40Speaker 1: sometimes going what have I gotten myself into?
- 2:44Speaker 2: I think every player has. When you come to Yukon,
- 2:47Speaker 2: you realize you know how hard and tough it really is,
- 2:50Speaker 2: and you know there's obviously good days, but there's also
- 2:53Speaker 2: bad days where you have a bad practice, you have
- 2:56Speaker 2: a bad film session, and it's a lot on you.
- 2:59Speaker 2: And but you always got to remember why you came
- 3:02Speaker 2: to Yukon, why you committed to coach early, and that
- 3:04Speaker 2: at the end of the day, he's pushing you for
- 3:06Speaker 2: a reason. And when you look back in your career.
- 3:09Speaker 2: You're going to thank him.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Yeah, just real quick here, when you come growing up
- 3:14Speaker 1: in Southborough, mass looking at Yukon, I mean they're you know,
- 3:17Speaker 1: Boston colleges right up the right up the road too.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Been local, that would have been your backyard.
- 3:23Speaker 2: Mm hmm it was. But they didn't recruit me as
- 3:26Speaker 2: hard as I thought they would as a local kid.
- 3:28Speaker 2: And you know, no disrespect to BC either, but just
- 3:31Speaker 2: the history that Yukon has, I think it's just undeniable
- 3:35Speaker 2: compared to you know, programs across the country.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Yeah, it's tough. It's tough to compare anything to Yukon
- 3:42Speaker 1: in my mind. When you talk about six national championships
- 3:46Speaker 1: in twenty five years, exactly right. There's schools out there
- 3:49Speaker 1: that never won a national championship. Yukon's got six. We're
- 3:53Speaker 1: with Alex Caravan and this is the Yukon men's basketball
- 3:57Speaker 1: coaches show back after this from lear Field,
