- 0:02Speaker 1: Minnesota Vikings fans, welcome back to the Purple People Leaders podcast.
- 0:09Speaker 2: He's thereon.
- 0:09Speaker 1: I'm Chris and Weird to talk about an ugly win
- 0:13Speaker 1: in Chicago. Haven't lost in Chicago since twenty nineteen. Those
- 0:20Speaker 1: nightmares we used to get from a couple of linebackers
- 0:24Speaker 1: and a couple of interior defensive linemen kind of gone
- 0:29Speaker 1: knock on wood, knock on wood. We had some nightmares
- 0:31Speaker 1: in the first half. I will say that it was ugly,
- 0:34Speaker 1: but it's always ugly in Chicago for the Vikings. But
- 0:39Speaker 1: they got the dub. It was a tale of two halfs.
- 0:43Speaker 1: Could even say that with the offensive line and the quarterback.
- 0:45Speaker 1: The running game really opened up the passing game. The
- 0:50Speaker 1: one two punch was fun to watch, you know, Mason
- 0:55Speaker 1: getting it in. So we're going to recap last night's
- 0:58Speaker 1: game and that victor. Let's not forget it's a divisional game.
- 1:04Speaker 1: And then of course you know we do have you know,
- 1:08Speaker 1: darrisad ended up not playing, Smith ended up not traveling.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Cashman got banged up. Sounds like he's gonna be out
- 1:16Speaker 1: for a little bit here. So we will talk this
- 1:20Speaker 1: next game. Another night game, Sunday night against Hot Atlanta
- 1:24Speaker 1: at home. We're gonna preview and predict that, and then
- 1:28Speaker 1: of course talks and go for football and they have
- 1:31Speaker 1: themselves a test at cal we'll kind of talk our
- 1:35Speaker 1: way through that. If this is your first time listening

- 2:37Speaker 1: four ninety nine for the first month.
- 2:41Speaker 2: All right, let's go ahead and bring in Aaron. Aaron Man.
- 2:44Speaker 1: You know, like we said, hey, we said they'd win
- 2:47Speaker 1: by three. We were a little low, but the tail
- 2:51Speaker 1: of two halves. Luckily we had the second half because
- 2:56Speaker 1: it was an ugly start, ugly win. But nothing comes
- 3:00Speaker 1: pretty on the road in Chicago.
- 3:03Speaker 3: Yeah, that seems to be the way it goes. I'm
- 3:05Speaker 3: doing well. It wasn't doing well about eight thirty last night,
- 3:12Speaker 3: right sitting there, he just geeked up to watch the game,
- 3:16Speaker 3: check out how JJ's doing. And it just seemed like
- 3:18Speaker 3: the team was flat. And you know, you mentioned last
- 3:22Speaker 3: week about the lack of preseason reps. I think that
- 3:27Speaker 3: was a good point. That seemed to show everybody's tight.
- 3:30Speaker 3: It looked like and just kind of out of sorts.
- 3:33Speaker 3: And then you go back and watch some guys on
- 3:35Speaker 3: the internet kind of replay that first half and break
- 3:38Speaker 3: down the plays, and you had guys running crossing patterns
- 3:42Speaker 3: into each other and all that stuff. And JJ was
- 3:44Speaker 3: getting a lot of pressure and couldn't get the ball out.
- 3:48Speaker 3: And I think, you know, first NFL start was a thing,
- 3:50Speaker 3: and we'll get into that. I know last week I
- 3:53Speaker 3: didn't sound that great. We're working on a new recording
- 3:56Speaker 3: system here, so hopefully this week while you're listening right now,
- 3:59Speaker 3: I sound a little bit better. Apologize for that, but man,
- 4:02Speaker 3: that was a tough game to watch, especially when you
- 4:04Speaker 3: had some expectations. I thought I had to kind of
- 4:07Speaker 3: continue to lower them and that first happens, like you know,
- 4:10Speaker 3: take my own advice about about taking it taking it
- 4:14Speaker 3: slow with McCarthy and everything, and man, I was really
- 4:17Speaker 3: impressed at the end, but I almost gave up on
- 4:19Speaker 3: the club. Chris about what halftime about nine five, I
- 4:24Speaker 3: was just I didn't know what was going on. And
- 4:26Speaker 3: you know, it wasn't just McCarthy, it was the offensive line,
- 4:30Speaker 3: it was the defense. It was just a slow goal
- 4:33Speaker 3: and kind of a slog And yeah, you're right, Chicago
- 4:36Speaker 3: is tough, and we always do have slog fest in Chicago,
- 4:39Speaker 3: but this one was a special kind of what it
- 4:40Speaker 3: had that continued for the whole game. Man, would have
- 4:43Speaker 3: show we would have had for today?
- 4:46Speaker 1: Yeah, no, kidd, you know, come right out three and out,
- 4:51Speaker 1: a couple three and outs there. They had a nice
- 4:55Speaker 1: spot almost six minute drive, ten play touchdown drive. You know,
- 5:01Speaker 1: we did follow it up after a couple punths. You know,
- 5:04Speaker 1: with a seven play drive almost or seven yeah, seven
- 5:07Speaker 1: play sixty seven.
- 5:09Speaker 2: You know, at least we got something going. And you know,
- 5:15Speaker 2: I don't know, yeah, early on it really was funky.
- 5:19Speaker 2: There was like, uh jj kind of tripped. I don't know,
- 5:24Speaker 2: I don't know if it was gonna be a sack obviously, Well,
- 5:26Speaker 2: he got sacked the first third, three and two, he
- 5:30Speaker 2: got sacked, and then he got sacked. I'm third down.
- 5:34Speaker 1: Again and I wasn't sure because he was rushed trying
- 5:36Speaker 1: to get through the pocket and I wasn't sure if
- 5:39Speaker 1: he was gonna run or or actually pass right there.
- 5:42Speaker 1: But he fell and it didn't really matter. So he tripped,
- 5:46Speaker 1: ended up, you know, getting a sack. And it was
- 5:50Speaker 1: third and eight. We threw a short pass, uh to
- 5:54Speaker 1: to Jenna to Jefferson. It was just just short of it.
- 5:59Speaker 1: It was drop, but the ball was gonna be short anyway. Now,
- 6:03Speaker 1: maybe it's set up a fourth and short and we
- 6:05Speaker 1: would have went for it. But you know, they at
- 6:08Speaker 1: least they got you know, a nice.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Field goal there. But and then it was just you know,
- 6:15Speaker 2: three play punt, three play punt, two play field goal.
- 6:19Speaker 2: And that's the thing that stood out to me. So
- 6:22Speaker 2: we couldn't be on that one little drive. We did
- 6:25Speaker 2: have a turnover on downs and the defense after a while,
- 6:28Speaker 2: they missed tackles, they missed some sacks, and then they
- 6:31Speaker 2: tightened up for quite some time. But it was kind
- 6:35Speaker 2: of funny how we got all these three and outs
- 6:38Speaker 2: and then in two plays we go twenty eight yards
- 6:42Speaker 2: in eighteen seconds. You know, it was like, well, what
- 6:44Speaker 2: the hell are we doing here, Let's get a completion
- 6:46Speaker 2: down the field like so that that gave me hope.
- 6:50Speaker 2: Is like, okay, ten to six.
- 6:52Speaker 1: You know, I wasn't thinking they were gonna score, not
- 6:56Speaker 1: that they were gonna take a knee, but I wasn't
- 6:58Speaker 1: thinking they were gonna score a field on that one,
- 7:01Speaker 1: and obviously a nice long one obviously.
- 7:04Speaker 2: But I did. At ten to six, I was like,
- 7:06Speaker 2: all right, dude, we played, you know, about as bad
- 7:10Speaker 2: as we could. We We were like ohs five or
- 7:14Speaker 2: os six at half, and I think it got oh
- 7:17Speaker 2: eight on first down until we actually got one.
- 7:20Speaker 1: It was zero and five at half. They were getting
- 7:24Speaker 1: a ton of pressure, like you mentioned, and then you know, okay,
- 7:30Speaker 1: we forced the three and out. Didn't even last a
- 7:33Speaker 1: minute in that drive, and you're like, all right, we
- 7:35Speaker 1: got the ball back and then it's a pick six,
- 7:38Speaker 1: and you know that's I got, I get. You know,
- 7:43Speaker 1: we had a we had a fifteen yard penalty. We'd
- 7:46Speaker 1: run a little bit, but.
- 7:48Speaker 2: When that pick six happened and it was seventeen to
- 7:51Speaker 2: six man and then we followed up with back to
- 7:55Speaker 2: back three and outs, you know, after.
- 7:58Speaker 1: That pick six, like, okay, we need to go get
- 8:01Speaker 1: a field goal here, and we need a field goal, and.
- 8:04Speaker 2: We followed up with two three and outs.
- 8:06Speaker 1: After that, going into that fourth quarter knowing that, you know,
- 8:11Speaker 1: the defense seems to have tightened up and at that
- 8:14Speaker 1: point that's only ten points because you know, JJ threw
- 8:18Speaker 1: two touchdowns, but really through three just not one to
- 8:21Speaker 1: the Vikings.
- 8:23Speaker 2: It was kind of a you know, it did kind
- 8:26Speaker 2: of look like a zone a little bit.
- 8:27Speaker 1: I did hear a clip from the Manning Brothers when
- 8:30Speaker 1: they do their little broadcast, and it kind of the
- 8:32Speaker 1: coverage kind of fooled them right away a little bit.
- 8:34Speaker 1: That's not excusing it, because he did look like he.
- 8:36Speaker 2: Was owned in on it.
- 8:38Speaker 1: You know, out of the break it looked like it
- 8:40Speaker 1: was gonna be fine, but dude broke on it. A
- 8:43Speaker 1: former Viking, I believe now that I think about it,
- 8:46Speaker 1: it just kind of popped in my head there. But
- 8:50Speaker 1: I mean, he took.
- 8:51Speaker 2: It to the house, and at that point, right I'm thinking, wow, dude,
- 9:00Speaker 2: kind of like what you're saying, where you're like, okay, man,
- 9:03Speaker 2: we got you know, one to build on, and you know,
- 9:05Speaker 2: we're gonna get this stuff out. And and the fact
- 9:08Speaker 2: that they after our two to three and outs, it's
- 9:10Speaker 2: in the fourth quarter, there's an eleven play drive going on.
- 9:14Speaker 2: It's six minutes long. I did. I was thinking, Okay,
- 9:17Speaker 2: it's gonna be twenty to six at least, but they
- 9:20Speaker 2: missed the field goal, and after that things changed. But
- 9:24Speaker 2: that picked six man to be down like that, and
- 9:27Speaker 2: that ugly of a game, eleven points felt like a
- 9:30Speaker 2: whole lot of points.
- 9:31Speaker 3: Then. Yeah, I mean, so you're saying there's a chance
- 9:34Speaker 3: center in the fourth court. Yeah, you're right, man, Like
- 9:38Speaker 3: just a list of the possessions. It's, you know, start
- 9:41Speaker 3: the game, sack three and out, punt, sack three and
- 9:44Speaker 3: out punt, next possession, you get a pass interference, you know,
- 9:49Speaker 3: jj wus her. First down, you get a field goal,
- 9:52Speaker 3: then you get a three and out punt and a
- 9:54Speaker 3: bad punt at that then you get a holding penalty,
- 9:57Speaker 3: delay game punt. That's when the doors coming off as
- 10:01Speaker 3: the delay of games and timing and all that stuff.
- 10:05Speaker 3: You get a nice third nailor you know, at the
- 10:07Speaker 3: end of the half, and you're thinking, okay, ten six,
- 10:10Speaker 3: just like you said, it's like that, you're not, you know,
- 10:12Speaker 3: we played like crap, We're down four points, you know,
- 10:16Speaker 3: possibly you know, rally at halftime, come out and play well,
- 10:22Speaker 3: and you get another roughing, get a roughing call, and
- 10:25Speaker 3: then the pick six and it's six seventeen to six
- 10:29Speaker 3: at that point, and you're just like, okay, let's I
- 10:32Speaker 3: don't know if I can keep watching this, you know
- 10:33Speaker 3: about how you do it? How do you keep yourself
- 10:36Speaker 3: away from the game so you can watch it later.
- 10:38Speaker 3: That's it. Just at that point, I'm trying to text somebody. Yeah,
- 10:42Speaker 3: just like, you know, trying to just relax a little bit.
- 10:46Speaker 3: And then you get to the delay of game and
- 10:47Speaker 3: the sack and punt again, and that's all the way
- 10:51Speaker 3: through the third Right there, you get you know, feeling
- 10:54Speaker 3: with a drop from feeling which is odd feeling, Yeah,
- 10:58Speaker 3: breeing out punt and we're onto the fourth quarter, and
- 11:00Speaker 3: nothing looked good at that point. You know, it's seventeen
- 11:03Speaker 3: to six. You haven't played well, you haven't shown anything.
- 11:08Speaker 3: The bright spot of that so far would have been
- 11:10Speaker 3: the defense, you know, holding them only seventeen points and
- 11:13Speaker 3: Mason running you know, Jordan, Yeah, Jordan Mason's his name,
- 11:19Speaker 3: twenty seven.
- 11:20Speaker 2: Ran the ball well.
- 11:21Speaker 3: But then they kept throwing Jones in there, and I'm like, well,
- 11:23Speaker 3: he's not kind of you know, keep running Mason and
- 11:26Speaker 3: see if you can, if you can get back in
- 11:28Speaker 3: this thing. And man, I'm telling you, I store my
- 11:30Speaker 3: hair out. It was not happy. I thought, you know,
- 11:33Speaker 3: JJ's just got to relax, calm down, hometown, first game,
- 11:38Speaker 3: Monday night football. You know, all the great thoughts were
- 11:42Speaker 3: going through my head at that point. But then you know,
- 11:47Speaker 3: and then you give a ball wong drive and they
- 11:48Speaker 3: miss a field goal to start the fourth.
- 11:51Speaker 1: Now, there was a point where it's one hundred and
- 11:54Speaker 1: ninety five yards, which isn't a lot, obviously, but one
- 11:57Speaker 1: hundred and ninety five to seventy seven, right, it was like,
- 12:01Speaker 1: we have seventy seventy yards going in the fourth, but
- 12:04Speaker 1: like what and.
- 12:06Speaker 4: You can't see any hope at that point. It just
- 12:09Speaker 4: it looked like everything was just dead. It looked like
- 12:13Speaker 4: there wasn't any hope for this one. Like you said, well,
- 12:16Speaker 4: it's a learning experience.
- 12:17Speaker 3: You're going through all the thoughts of what a choco
- 12:20Speaker 3: it up to, and then the next drive it kind
- 12:22Speaker 3: of gets you know, it kind of gets going. Mason
- 12:25Speaker 3: gets a couple of runs, big chunks, kind of opens
- 12:29Speaker 3: things up a little bit. Jefferson gets catch, and you're
- 12:32Speaker 3: down in the red zone and you're thinking, Okay, if
- 12:35Speaker 3: you're ever gonna mount a comeback, this is the time
- 12:38Speaker 3: to do it. JJ drops back, hits Jefferson in the middle,
- 12:42Speaker 3: drops in the end zone. You know, now you're you know,
- 12:48Speaker 3: twelve seventeen.
- 12:50Speaker 2: And yeah, there's a play right before that. Not to
- 12:54Speaker 2: cut you up, but it looked like I think it
- 12:55Speaker 2: was nailor that was coming open and the dude knocked
- 12:58Speaker 2: it down.
- 12:59Speaker 1: But I was like, shit, that was our touchdown chance.
- 13:02Speaker 1: It was a great throat by JJ though tight window, yeah,
- 13:06Speaker 1: I was.
- 13:07Speaker 3: And then there was one in there also where Jefferson
- 13:10Speaker 3: could have caught it. It was a high ball, yeah,
- 13:14Speaker 3: hands to her, you know, but catchable, but a tough catch, right, ye.
- 13:20Speaker 3: But you get the Jeff Jefferson touchdown. A little bit
- 13:23Speaker 3: of life read a little bit of life. You fail
- 13:25Speaker 3: the two point conversion, Okay, you know, so so it goes.
- 13:29Speaker 3: But to that point, Chris, then it's up to the
- 13:31Speaker 3: defense to start this thing. Start the ball roll and
- 13:34Speaker 3: they get a sack, get a three and out punt,
- 13:37Speaker 3: and now you think, you're starting to think if you
- 13:40Speaker 3: can get this thing keep going and you can still
- 13:43Speaker 3: maybe get another touchdown, you're in this game with the lead.
- 13:48Speaker 3: And uh, that's what happened.
- 13:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean that like an eighteen yard run, seven
- 13:54Speaker 2: yard run, like Mason really like he does have that
- 13:59Speaker 2: speed and he can juke you out a little bit.
- 14:02Speaker 2: You know, that's hard to find. And he's what twenty five,
- 14:06Speaker 2: twenty six something like that. He's right in his prime.
- 14:11Speaker 2: So when we made that, you know, he made that trade.
- 14:14Speaker 2: I liked it a lot. But now that you see.
- 14:16Speaker 1: Him, you know, change the pace, but also just what
- 14:20Speaker 1: fifteen twenty pounds bigger and just fresher legs or whatever,
- 14:24Speaker 1: and almost put some pressure on Jones because then all
- 14:27Speaker 1: of a sudden he started producing some runs, you know,
- 14:30Speaker 1: and it was like, okay, here we go, Like I
- 14:32Speaker 1: like this little one two punch. I liked it, you
- 14:34Speaker 1: know earlier, but because he came right out after that
- 14:38Speaker 1: three plays negative nine yards for them to make it
- 14:43Speaker 1: twenty to seven or twenty to seventeen on that drive
- 14:47Speaker 1: that touchdown. Only three plays but nine yard run right
- 14:50Speaker 1: out the gate. You know we did get well we went. Yeah,
- 14:55Speaker 1: that was that pass where I went through his hands,
- 14:59Speaker 1: but you know, the deep pass the Jones and I
- 15:03Speaker 1: know JJ quarterbacks are always like this where he's like, man,
- 15:06Speaker 1: I would have loved to put that out there for
- 15:07Speaker 1: him so he could make it easy catch, but he
- 15:09Speaker 1: came back for it. And Jones, you know, he is
- 15:13Speaker 1: a guy that coming out of the backfield, man, he
- 15:16Speaker 1: can really you know, he's done that a couple of times,
- 15:20Speaker 1: not always for touchdowns, but just in general. He's really
- 15:22Speaker 1: good out of the backfield. So you can kind of
- 15:25Speaker 1: pick and choose when he's got it going. And then obviously,
- 15:28Speaker 1: you know, knock on wood. You know, more than likely
- 15:31Speaker 1: he'll get banged up. He's a running back, he's older.
- 15:35Speaker 1: But that was a great just a great play. Puts
- 15:39Speaker 1: a lot of pressure on that linebacker, as we know,
- 15:42Speaker 1: we've seen that in years past. I remember back in
- 15:46Speaker 1: the day, people getting all mad at bar playing the
- 15:49Speaker 1: Rams on the road. It's like, dude, you can't ask
- 15:53Speaker 1: a guy all day long, no matter who it is.
- 15:56Speaker 1: Ray Lewis included at times that you know that that's
- 15:59Speaker 1: gonna be.
- 16:01Speaker 2: Something you're gonna you know, actually like depend on and
- 16:04Speaker 2: stuff like that. But we did kind of get lucky
- 16:09Speaker 2: on that PI. It did look like Naylor fell down,
- 16:12Speaker 2: but that's the way it goes. The two point conversion
- 16:15Speaker 2: was good with Theling. It was nice to see Thling, you.
- 16:18Speaker 1: Know, like you said, thelan had that that catch where
- 16:20Speaker 1: he grabbed it and the dude just ripped it out
- 16:22Speaker 1: of it. And to me, you know, some of that
- 16:24Speaker 1: is just the fine tuning, and maybe Jefferson not you know,
- 16:29Speaker 1: practicing that much during camp, maybe he needed to get
- 16:32Speaker 1: some of that stuff out in that next drive. So
- 16:35Speaker 1: it's twenty to seventeen to the next drive. Five plays, eight yards.
- 16:40Speaker 2: That's that play that we talked about before we hit
- 16:45Speaker 2: record where million Williams Caleb Williams stepped out of bounce
- 16:50Speaker 2: so counted as a sack and Theo Jackson put a
- 16:53Speaker 2: nice hit on to make it third and fourteen, and
- 16:58Speaker 2: then oh Man we're gonna talk Wilson. Our special teams
- 17:01Speaker 2: was phenomenal yesterday we did. You know, Wilson got the
- 17:06Speaker 2: block on that.
- 17:07Speaker 5: On that punt and then you know, you got the
- 17:10Speaker 5: lead all of a sudden, you got a lot of momentum,
- 17:14Speaker 5: and you know seven twenty four left up three Mason
- 17:19Speaker 5: breaks another twenty yard run and whether he's quick or
- 17:23Speaker 5: he's breaking tackles, and also the old line, it was
- 17:27Speaker 5: coming together.
- 17:28Speaker 1: You know, no Darrisaw and also you know some of
- 17:31Speaker 1: those at least our center, I think took a little
- 17:34Speaker 1: while to get back from his injury last year, Like
- 17:37Speaker 1: they all haven't really played together all that much, especially
- 17:41Speaker 1: live reps, but just in general, you know last time
- 17:46Speaker 1: or last last episode, we thought Dearrisaw was gonna play
- 17:50Speaker 1: and then he didn't play. So it did take a
- 17:53Speaker 1: little I still think they're gonna mesh here in the
- 17:55Speaker 1: coming weeks.
- 17:58Speaker 2: And that's kind of a theme of what we were
- 18:02Speaker 2: talking about with the record, how we could be a
- 18:04Speaker 2: better team going to the playoffs once we get it
- 18:07Speaker 2: all together and JJ getting it all together. But you know,
- 18:11Speaker 2: Hawk made a nice little uh short, you know catch
- 18:16Speaker 2: for a first down and he blocked that's one of
- 18:19Speaker 2: the best blocking games I've seen out of Hockinson.
- 18:23Speaker 1: Sometimes it's kind of hit or miss with that, but
- 18:27Speaker 1: to you know, to have a nineteen yard run, nine
- 18:30Speaker 1: yard pass, another good little run. You know, Jones got
- 18:36Speaker 1: another pass for eleven yards, and Jefferson got us really
- 18:42Speaker 1: close on a third and one at the fourteen and
- 18:45Speaker 1: then the ideal.
- 18:47Speaker 2: Time for ko C to call that play.
- 18:52Speaker 1: And one thing that we've talked about JJ he's not
- 18:55Speaker 1: a guy that's.
- 18:56Speaker 2: Gonna run, run, run, run, run, but he's more than
- 18:59Speaker 2: capable of doing it. That's something he did at Michigan
- 19:02Speaker 2: and something we talked about, you know, the third down
- 19:05Speaker 2: in either manageable or long. He was really good at
- 19:09Speaker 2: that at Michigan.
- 19:11Speaker 1: Another thing he was great at was timely runs, whether
- 19:15Speaker 1: it comes off of hey, they're leaving it open, I'm
- 19:17Speaker 1: gonna go, or a full on, hey you're gonna have
- 19:20Speaker 1: an option here, run pass option. It was a airin
- 19:23Speaker 1: a perfect time to call that play.
- 19:26Speaker 2: And the second I saw that and hesitate, you knew
- 19:31Speaker 2: and how Hockinson was already up at that second level,
- 19:34Speaker 2: you basically knew he was getting in.
- 19:36Speaker 3: Yeah, as long as Hackinson could hold the block, and
- 19:38Speaker 3: like you said, he had been blocking fairly well throughout
- 19:42Speaker 3: the night. But you're right about the offensive line as well.
- 19:44Speaker 3: I mean there's essentially four new guys. He had Skulls
- 19:47Speaker 3: left tackle filling in for Darsop, and then you had
- 19:50Speaker 3: the rookie Donovan Jackson at the guard position, you had
- 19:54Speaker 3: Kelly at center, and Fry's at the other guard. That's
- 19:57Speaker 3: four new faces on the off offensive line saving you know,
- 20:01Speaker 3: Brian O'Neil there. So, yeah, it's gonna take a little
- 20:05Speaker 3: bit of time for that to gel and and it
- 20:07Speaker 3: certainly haddened up until right around this time in the fourth.
- 20:12Speaker 3: But yeah, may that drive there was kind of the
- 20:15Speaker 3: one that you're like, Okay, this is what it's supposed
- 20:18Speaker 3: to look like. Mason with the runs, Hockinson with the
- 20:21Speaker 3: ketch Jones out of the backfield. That seems like everybody
- 20:25Speaker 3: was in the places that they needed to be. And
- 20:28Speaker 3: then you get down to the in the red and
- 20:30Speaker 3: you write about that play. I guess he had run
- 20:32Speaker 3: it at Michigan and run it a bunch of times,
- 20:34Speaker 3: so it's probably one of his favorite plays. And the
- 20:36Speaker 3: read option you right as soon as you saw the
- 20:38Speaker 3: end crash New he's gonna get yardage, and as long
- 20:41Speaker 3: as Hockinson made that block, you know, he could get
- 20:45Speaker 3: in the end zone. So it was you know, as
- 20:47Speaker 3: you're watching that play, it's like, okay, you got through
- 20:50Speaker 3: that first level.
- 20:51Speaker 2: Now that it's in and he.
- 20:54Speaker 3: Just beat a linebacker into the end zone and then
- 20:56Speaker 3: you're like twenty seven seventeen. You know, I don't There
- 21:01Speaker 3: wasn't much time left to think six minutes or something,
- 21:04Speaker 3: so there was time, but the momentum was clearly in
- 21:08Speaker 3: our favor at that point. Surprisingly enough, after sitting through
- 21:11Speaker 3: that first half, and you're starting to see, Okay, this
- 21:16Speaker 3: is the kind of JJ stuff that we're talking about.
- 21:20Speaker 3: You know, Grid being able to not go in the dumps,
- 21:24Speaker 3: and you know, I was really watching his demeanor in
- 21:26Speaker 3: that first half, just going, Okay, how's he handling it?
- 21:29Speaker 2: Is it?
- 21:29Speaker 3: Nerves?
- 21:30Speaker 2: Is it? You know?
- 21:32Speaker 3: I think a lot of it might have been nerves
- 21:33Speaker 3: from both him and O'Connor are just unfamiliarity and not
- 21:37Speaker 3: you know, it's just that first game, and it's it
- 21:40Speaker 3: sucks that it's Monday night in front of a national
- 21:42Speaker 3: audience and Joe Buck and Troy Aikman and both the
- 21:46Speaker 3: Mannings and everybody else in the world. But man, at
- 21:50Speaker 3: that point, you're like, all right, I see it now,
- 21:52Speaker 3: I get it. I get what's going on. I get
- 21:55Speaker 3: how this works. And you know, after the game you
- 21:58Speaker 3: learned some things from O'Connell about what he said to
- 22:01Speaker 3: Jig at halftime about how he's going to bring us
- 22:04Speaker 3: back to win this game.
- 22:05Speaker 2: And that was before the pick six.
- 22:07Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly. And you know, the pick six was the
- 22:10Speaker 3: low point.
- 22:11Speaker 2: It really was. I was, well, was it like back
- 22:15Speaker 2: to the drawing board?
- 22:16Speaker 3: Great? Yeah, and it's even coming out after that after
- 22:21Speaker 3: the half. You know, it's just it was. It was tough, man.
- 22:24Speaker 3: And so then we get to another point here, Chris,
- 22:26Speaker 3: where you're up twenty seven to seventeen and Caleb Leeds
- 22:30Speaker 3: a drive right down the field basically a touchdown, finishes
- 22:35Speaker 3: it with a touchdown pass short touchdown pass to Roma
- 22:37Speaker 3: Dunesday when you could not tackle. I think we got
- 22:41Speaker 3: one sack out of possibly seven sack possibilities throughout the
- 22:45Speaker 3: course of the game, and that became frustrating you and
- 22:50Speaker 3: I we used to lament. If you listen to this
- 22:51Speaker 3: podcast back twenty nineteen, twenty twenty ish, Yeah, that was.
- 22:57Speaker 2: The year that's our that's the year that the deep
- 23:00Speaker 2: and started showing. You know, it started to unravel a
- 23:03Speaker 2: little bit.
- 23:04Speaker 3: Mitch Trubisky would beat us with his legs because we
- 23:06Speaker 3: just you know, Zimmer's defense and you couldn't you know,
- 23:09Speaker 3: watch your griffin.
- 23:11Speaker 2: Couldn't put somebody on the mat or you know whoever.
- 23:15Speaker 3: You couldn't cover a guy. And also, you know, get
- 23:18Speaker 3: the quarterback as he's getting out of the ends of it.
- 23:20Speaker 3: I mean, Williams is a whole different animal from TBI.
- 23:24Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, from that standpoint. Yeah, so you know, you knew.
- 23:27Speaker 3: Probably they're gonna have something in him to come back,
- 23:31Speaker 3: but to come back with a touchdown and leave two
- 23:34Speaker 3: or two on the clock, you're out by three at
- 23:36Speaker 3: this point. You get the ball back and now it's
- 23:42Speaker 3: time to do clock management. And if you can't get
- 23:45Speaker 3: a first down, I would have been the optimal the
- 23:48Speaker 3: thing there is to get the first down. But I
- 23:49Speaker 3: thought they round the clock really well, left them with
- 23:52Speaker 3: light I don't know, nine seconds left at the end
- 23:55Speaker 3: of right. Uh, and that was a wrap but it
- 23:59Speaker 3: was Ah. It was a roller coaster ride in Soldier
- 24:03Speaker 3: Field Christ and I'm glad we came out on top
- 24:06Speaker 3: of that, I thought that it showed a lot of
- 24:08Speaker 3: heart and you know, had let's say, you know, McCarthy
- 24:16Speaker 3: been steady throughout that whole game and that was still
- 24:19Speaker 3: the outcome, I think that it would have been a
- 24:22Speaker 3: good thing. But it really showed a lot that you know,
- 24:27Speaker 3: he had to pick himself up and pick the team
- 24:30Speaker 3: up because it wasn't just McCarthy. Everybody was playing like
- 24:33Speaker 3: crap that first Yeah, just really was a stink fast there.
- 24:38Speaker 3: And then to pick him up and to get him
- 24:39Speaker 3: gone and to come back and beat Chicago on the
- 24:45Speaker 3: road Monday night, heck of road to start the season.
- 24:48Speaker 3: Heck an accomplishment.
- 24:50Speaker 1: Yeah, And you know there obviously, like you said, there
- 24:55Speaker 1: was some good and bad and and and also they
- 24:57Speaker 1: talked about you kind of see this a little bit,
- 25:00Speaker 1: but they talked about how, you know, koc said, they
- 25:03Speaker 1: were like doing all these blitzes that they've never done.
- 25:06Speaker 1: They were doing all sorts of stuff. And sometimes it's
- 25:09Speaker 1: almost like.
- 25:12Speaker 3: Like a.
- 25:14Speaker 1: Like a power team in college football, power four team
- 25:19Speaker 1: going against a smaller team that's really good. Well, they've
- 25:22Speaker 1: had all off season and they're just scheming, scheming for
- 25:25Speaker 1: this one little game. You know, and we're gonna let
- 25:28Speaker 1: it all hang out. And so that was part of
- 25:30Speaker 1: it too. They were just bringing so much. But also
- 25:34Speaker 1: you know, both teams were three of twelve on third down.
- 25:40Speaker 1: Obviously we got like I said, to oh to nine,
- 25:43Speaker 1: so we did start.
- 25:43Speaker 3: To tighten that up.
- 25:45Speaker 1: Only fourteen first downs compared to twenty not a great look.
- 25:50Speaker 1: I didn't like the seven rushing first downs a little
- 25:53Speaker 1: bit too much there. We only had forty nine plays
- 25:56Speaker 1: off in two fifty four, so we got out gained
- 25:59Speaker 1: and WHATNOTO both had the exact same amount of drives,
- 26:03Speaker 1: thirteen drives. And you know, whether it's jj being a
- 26:09Speaker 1: little late with some balls, whether it was some drop balls,
- 26:12Speaker 1: whether it was the pressure. It could have been like
- 26:16Speaker 1: fifteen to twenty something like that, maybe sixteen to twenty
- 26:19Speaker 1: instead of thirteen to twenty had he gotten the ball
- 26:21Speaker 1: out earlier, or there wouldn't have been a drop. So
- 26:26Speaker 1: you know, they did have success running. But some of
- 26:28Speaker 1: that was the first half, and I guess you could
- 26:32Speaker 1: say on that, you know, the second and last drive too,
- 26:34Speaker 1: but some of that was just Williams was really in
- 26:38Speaker 1: tone not to hold the ball too long and instead
- 26:41Speaker 1: of scrambling trying to make a great play. He's just
- 26:43Speaker 1: gonna go get a first down. And so I did
- 26:46Speaker 1: think they ran the ball for a while pretty well,
- 26:49Speaker 1: but then flow put a stop to it, and then
- 26:52Speaker 1: we got.
- 26:52Speaker 2: Our running game going.
- 26:54Speaker 1: And when you look at you know, like the fourth
- 26:58Speaker 1: quarter in general, we did give up that touchdown, but
- 27:01Speaker 1: they hadn't scored in a while, especially.
- 27:03Speaker 2: A touchdown obviously. I mean it was like six straight
- 27:07Speaker 2: third down stops from the Vikes that you know, we
- 27:12Speaker 2: had too many penalties eight but they had twelve. That
- 27:15Speaker 2: was a big difference maker.
- 27:16Speaker 1: But when you look at it, first half rushing stats
- 27:19Speaker 1: thirty five, second half eighty four.
- 27:22Speaker 2: I mean that was big. And there was a moment
- 27:24Speaker 2: under three minutes left it was one sixty four to
- 27:29Speaker 2: minus six. When we're talking about drives, and you know.
- 27:35Speaker 1: We had three straight touchdown drives and it was kind
- 27:38Speaker 1: of just all purpose, but a lot of it just
- 27:41Speaker 1: had to do with everybody calming down, but also just
- 27:43Speaker 1: getting that run game going, because then Aaron, you did
- 27:47Speaker 1: see that play action, there was some hesitation from the outside,
- 27:52Speaker 1: you know, players, even the linebackers, whatever. It was just
- 27:55Speaker 1: that little glitch hold on are they gonna run in
- 27:59Speaker 1: a couple of you know, we got a lot of
- 28:01Speaker 1: protection just off that if you get your run game going,
- 28:03Speaker 1: you're not always going to do it. I did, like,
- 28:06Speaker 1: you know, that was a good test, right because we said,
- 28:09Speaker 1: all right, now it looks like we've improved and we
- 28:12Speaker 1: have more of a running game, potentially, is he gonna
- 28:15Speaker 1: use it?
- 28:16Speaker 2: And that's exactly what it did. And if we wouldn't
- 28:18Speaker 2: have started running like that, I don't think we moved
- 28:21Speaker 2: the ball like that. I really don't.
- 28:23Speaker 1: But overall, to your point, you know, the defense started
- 28:29Speaker 1: to tighten up. Six tackles for loss, three hits on
- 28:32Speaker 1: the qb which it is tough to get a hit
- 28:34Speaker 1: on them.
- 28:34Speaker 2: They did get three sacks, but one of them was
- 28:36Speaker 2: him stepping out of bounce when he could have just
- 28:38Speaker 2: thrown it away.
- 28:39Speaker 1: So it's really just two sacks, and one of them
- 28:42Speaker 1: came late too, so to your point, it basically was
- 28:45Speaker 1: just one.
- 28:47Speaker 2: On the flip side, they did have same amount six
- 28:51Speaker 2: tackles for loss. They did have five PBUs two of
- 28:54Speaker 2: them at the line of scrimmage, and they did they
- 28:56Speaker 2: were getting hits on the quarterback a little bit, five hits,
- 28:59Speaker 2: but you know, as we know, five hits is a
- 29:02Speaker 2: good game for our offensive line.
- 29:05Speaker 1: Were used to double digits. So the clash fourth quarter
- 29:09Speaker 1: all around, and you know, Smith didn't Harrison Smith. You know,
- 29:17Speaker 1: it's very hush hush what's going on with him. It
- 29:21Speaker 1: might be a health issue, it could be you know,
- 29:26Speaker 1: who knows, Maybe it's gout, you know, who knows. I'm
- 29:29Speaker 1: just kidding, but who knows. Something's going on with him.
- 29:31Speaker 1: Didn't make the flight darrisaw. Hopefully he gets back here
- 29:35Speaker 1: in the next week or soon. But Cashman did have
- 29:38Speaker 1: a hamstring, got a little banged up. But I definitely
- 29:42Speaker 1: I highlighted Wilson. Welcome back Wilson because he made plays
- 29:46Speaker 1: even at you know, when Cashman went out, but also
- 29:49Speaker 1: special teams. Price, the rookie Price, a bunch of return yards,
- 29:55Speaker 1: looking fast, fitting in.
- 29:58Speaker 2: With his team. We know for years now we've had
- 30:01Speaker 2: a great locker room and that's not going anywhere, that's
- 30:04Speaker 2: for sure. And then the kicker, you know, I think
- 30:07Speaker 2: he tied the record for the longest in Soldier field.
- 30:10Speaker 1: So you got Wilson blocking a punt like kind of
- 30:13Speaker 1: partially blocking it, Price going nuts, and then the kicker kicking.
- 30:19Speaker 1: So all together complimentary football. It's something that we've wanted
- 30:24Speaker 1: to talk about for years. Our defense was such a
- 30:29Speaker 1: you know, in the tank for those from like twenty
- 30:32Speaker 1: twenty to like twenty twenty three. It was a little
- 30:34Speaker 1: rough these last two years now, well last year especially.
- 30:38Speaker 1: We made a jump in twenty three. But now that
- 30:42Speaker 1: you know Flores has more to work with, it's a
- 30:45Speaker 1: different ball game. I thought Redman played pretty well Hartgrove.
- 30:49Speaker 1: I mean, I liked his little kick.
- 30:52Speaker 2: He couldn't really get his whole kickup like Hunter because
- 30:54Speaker 2: he's a little bit different body type. I'll say that,
- 30:58Speaker 2: but I mean his first.
- 31:00Speaker 1: Game, five tackles, two sacks, a QB hit, It just
- 31:05Speaker 1: really doing his thing man. So but Wilson Price and
- 31:10Speaker 1: the kicker, Wow, that was something man, and we needed
- 31:13Speaker 1: all those damn yards, you know.
- 31:16Speaker 3: Yeah, that was something that you know, added to the
- 31:18Speaker 3: misery too of that the beginning of the third when
- 31:21Speaker 3: Cashman went down. So last year our defense was completely
- 31:24Speaker 3: different with Cashman and without Cashman, and that's where Wilson
- 31:29Speaker 3: came in, and I thought he played really really well
- 31:32Speaker 3: in that spot. I'm not going to say he was
- 31:34Speaker 3: better than Cashman, but I understand why they picked him up.
- 31:37Speaker 3: His speed, he's rangy, he can cover, he can do
- 31:39Speaker 3: the things that Cashman does, which doesn't leave us in
- 31:42Speaker 3: that spot anymore of like, well, you know, one defense
- 31:45Speaker 3: with Cashman, one defense without. I still don't know, Chris.
- 31:49Speaker 3: I don't have a great beat on the cornerback room
- 31:51Speaker 3: at this point. Yes, over that last week, and I
- 31:55Speaker 3: know I saw Kuda out there. I saw the guy
- 31:58Speaker 3: from Philly. He had some good plays and not some
- 32:01Speaker 3: good plays. Obviously uh Marie Murphy was there. But yeah,
- 32:07Speaker 3: I mean, if that's the three that you're starting, a
- 32:09Speaker 3: Kuda he showed up. I didn't see him make a
- 32:12Speaker 3: great play. I saw him get beat a couple of
- 32:15Speaker 3: times and a miss attackle and also make a tackle.
- 32:18Speaker 3: So there, that's still a bit of a mystery. I
- 32:21Speaker 3: thought defensively, the defensive line was good. I believe I
- 32:24Speaker 3: Drake Redriguez made a big play ye in some real
- 32:28Speaker 3: time now, which was a little bit of a surprise
- 32:30Speaker 3: to me. Redman was there. I think that's a big
- 32:34Speaker 3: step up in it. But darrisaw gone and and and stuff.
- 32:38Speaker 3: I thought the lines were good. Let the offensive line
- 32:41Speaker 3: jet a little bit, Let everybody get healthy, get back
- 32:43Speaker 3: on that line defensive line. The rotation was good. I
- 32:46Speaker 3: thought that was that was important. Alan made a couple
- 32:50Speaker 3: of plays and then you're at Hardgrave, really and I
- 32:52Speaker 3: think throughout the year, each guy is going to have
- 32:54Speaker 3: a different game where they show up dependent on you know,
- 32:57Speaker 3: the body type and and what what kind of offensive
- 33:00Speaker 3: line they're going up against. I thought, you know, linebacker wise,
- 33:03Speaker 3: gink was gink almost ginked it.
- 33:05Speaker 2: He almost. I don't know why they keep doing that
- 33:10Speaker 2: around Did you throw that ball?
- 33:12Speaker 3: I just don't understand why you would why he would
- 33:13Speaker 3: call that play with kink call on the field.
- 33:16Speaker 1: Did you watch any tape of this guy's career? And
- 33:19Speaker 1: so Dallas Turner as well.
- 33:21Speaker 3: I mean defensively, you're right, they shut down the run
- 33:23Speaker 3: and once they did that, things got a little bit
- 33:26Speaker 3: a little bit easier. Swift had kind of a fun
- 33:29Speaker 3: first quarter there and then uh, like you said, Flores
- 33:33Speaker 3: shut the door on that and make kill him throw
- 33:35Speaker 3: the ball. You're right, he he's not being as improvisational
- 33:40Speaker 3: as he was last year, although with pressure he does
- 33:43Speaker 3: get out of the pocket. And you got to watch
- 33:44Speaker 3: him on those sidelines because he makes those passes that
- 33:48Speaker 3: just drive you on those sidelines. As long as he
- 33:51Speaker 3: don't step out right and you got to just hit him.
- 33:54Speaker 3: You know, you don't hit him, he's going to throw
- 33:57Speaker 3: the ball. So he's he's going to get some penalties
- 34:00Speaker 3: on that. But you're right, he's just getting rid of
- 34:02Speaker 3: the ball, quicker and more decisive. So we're gonna see
- 34:06Speaker 3: him a lot. I know, the handshake at the end
- 34:08Speaker 3: of the game, JJ and him look like, yeah, we're
- 34:11Speaker 3: gonna We're gonna see a lot of each other ten
- 34:13Speaker 3: years of our lives. So this is kind of opening
- 34:16Speaker 3: salvo as far as that goes. But yeah, I mean,
- 34:21Speaker 3: special teams was huge. Miles Price was a big surprise.
- 34:24Speaker 3: Big the fact that he could hang on to the
- 34:26Speaker 3: ball with some of those hits he was taking. You
- 34:28Speaker 3: just like the ball pop out, you know. And then
- 34:34Speaker 3: ty Chandlers found a place I guess for the time
- 34:36Speaker 3: being in special teams and kick return. So that's good.
- 34:41Speaker 1: Uh that was a funny play too, where everybody's looking
- 34:44Speaker 1: at Koc.
- 34:45Speaker 2: Should I take it out? Yeah?
- 34:48Speaker 3: Yeah, well you know, I think he told him to
- 34:51Speaker 3: keep an eye on him.
- 34:52Speaker 1: So yeah, it was a smart play you might as well,
- 34:55Speaker 1: you know, yeah, making it really smart.
- 34:59Speaker 3: Yeah, save a timeout or made them use one one
- 35:02Speaker 3: of the two human at warning.
- 35:04Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 35:05Speaker 3: Yeah, but I mean offensively. You know, I had, like
- 35:09Speaker 3: I mentioned earlier, had the fourth quarter been like the
- 35:12Speaker 3: first three, we'd have a lot of a lot of
- 35:17Speaker 3: question marks, and then during this show there would be
- 35:20Speaker 3: a lot to say about what the.
- 35:23Speaker 2: Hell is going on here?
- 35:24Speaker 3: But you know, it turned out score wise to be
- 35:29Speaker 3: a pretty basic you know, Soldier Field Viking Bears game.
- 35:36Speaker 3: Bears fans took it pretty hard. I can understand that
- 35:39Speaker 3: it's it's not it's that's not a good spot to
- 35:42Speaker 3: be and I think we've been there before his Vikings
- 35:44Speaker 3: fans exactly, so I'm not losing too much sleep over that.
- 35:48Speaker 3: But yeah, good game. You talked about JJ a little bit.
- 35:52Speaker 3: You know, it's such a roller coaster yesterday Chris that, Yeah,
- 35:59Speaker 3: I'm happy for him. Yeah, I thought, you know, he's
- 36:02Speaker 3: a dog. I thought he pulled out the wind there.
- 36:04Speaker 3: I thought he had a lot to do with the
- 36:06Speaker 3: momentum change. But I think everybody, and I have to
- 36:10Speaker 3: take anything away from JJ, Anda's play was very impressed,
- 36:13Speaker 3: but I think everybody just kind of got their shit together, Chris,
- 36:16Speaker 3: which just kind of helped you know everything as far
- 36:21Speaker 3: as how that game went, and we'll see coming up here.
- 36:24Speaker 3: We got Atlanta, but we'll see how that ball keeps rolling,
- 36:28Speaker 3: because it's momentum like that, you know, when you finally
- 36:31Speaker 3: turn that corner and everybody kind of gets on the
- 36:34Speaker 3: same page and it's sort of what it seems like
- 36:36Speaker 3: it was real good things can start to happen.
- 36:40Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, you're right, it was. And just like it
- 36:42Speaker 1: wasn't all his faults. Sure, you can point to a couple.
- 36:45Speaker 2: Of passes that he didn't get out on time, or
- 36:47Speaker 2: maybe he shouldn't have tried to step too far in
- 36:51Speaker 2: the pocket and just get rid of it and he
- 36:53Speaker 2: ended up stumbling or whatever. We get wet. We can
- 36:55Speaker 2: play some fingers at him.
- 36:56Speaker 1: Sure, but it was it was pretty much everybody even
- 36:59Speaker 1: you know this this nasty defense we got. They looked
- 37:02Speaker 1: a little shaky early too. So yeah, and like we said,
- 37:07Speaker 1: the run game, man, once that run game going, it
- 37:09Speaker 1: opened up everything. And you know in the NFL, man,
- 37:12Speaker 1: if you got a fairly clean pocket, good things happened.
- 37:16Speaker 1: But you know, you could really tell that he was
- 37:19Speaker 1: he was coming together, and like I said, there was
- 37:21Speaker 1: still some plays left on the field. Like they had
- 37:23Speaker 1: two knockdowns right at the line of scrimmage. Now luckily
- 37:28Speaker 1: you know the next player two plays later or whatever.
- 37:30Speaker 2: We got.
- 37:31Speaker 1: We got it to Jefferson on that low pass, really
- 37:34Speaker 1: good pass. But you know there was something something to
- 37:39Speaker 1: be said about just in general doing it. But you know, uh,
- 37:46Speaker 1: just looking at the number of snaps.
- 37:49Speaker 2: Oh excuse me out there, Levi Drake Rodriguez to get
- 37:54Speaker 2: twenty snaps.
- 37:58Speaker 1: Akuda had six and he had a head injury. Now,
- 38:04Speaker 1: whether that means they're just they were playing it safe
- 38:07Speaker 1: or he's in the concussion protocol or whatever, we'll see
- 38:11Speaker 1: if he'll get back in time. Redmond had thirty two.
- 38:15Speaker 1: Uh snaps. Pace had forty seven. But there was a variety.
- 38:23Speaker 1: You know, I thought Isaiah Rogers and Murphy played pretty well.
- 38:27Speaker 1: You're talking about corners. I thought they made some good tackles.
- 38:30Speaker 1: I thought they made some some key tackles.
- 38:31Speaker 2: When we needed that. There was a wide receiver screen
- 38:35Speaker 2: that was kind of Williams kind of threw a behind
- 38:37Speaker 2: his receiver, but it really didn't matter because what's this
- 38:41Speaker 2: thows Rogers was there.
- 38:44Speaker 1: No matter what he would he would have wrapped him
- 38:45Speaker 1: up even if it if he did. It was a
- 38:48Speaker 1: good throw, So you know, they just we got to
- 38:52Speaker 1: keep an eye on a kuda as far as that goes.
- 38:55Speaker 1: Rot If you look at Mason had thirty snaps, Jones
- 38:58Speaker 1: had twenty eight, Oliver at twenty seven, and you know,
- 39:05Speaker 1: Naylor played pretty good and he you know, he drew
- 39:09Speaker 1: some some coverage as well, so he's getting a little
- 39:12Speaker 1: bit more comfortable. And like I said, we do have
- 39:16Speaker 1: some injuries going into this that they may come back.
- 39:20Speaker 2: We don't know. I'm assuming, you know right now, Cashman,
- 39:24Speaker 2: they have questionable. If it's a hamstring and he didn't
- 39:27Speaker 2: come back in the game, I don't see how he's
- 39:29Speaker 2: gonna play akudo. It's his head. But it says questionable.
- 39:34Speaker 2: We're so early in the week. It really hurts us
- 39:38Speaker 2: that way.
- 39:39Speaker 1: For them, Mooney is questionable with the shoulder.
- 39:43Speaker 2: Offensive tackle Nelson, so they got Agnew their wide receiver.
- 39:48Speaker 2: They got some guys out as well. I mean, it
- 39:51Speaker 2: is football, after all, you know, coming to Atlanta, we're
- 39:57Speaker 2: back back at home. And last year the Falcons put
- 40:03Speaker 2: up one hundred and fifty eight rushing yards on us,
- 40:06Speaker 2: which is too much. Obviously, you know, you can get
- 40:09Speaker 2: by somewhat with that.
- 40:10Speaker 1: In college football, if you're playing a rushing team and
- 40:13Speaker 1: they average, you know, over two hundred yards and you
- 40:16Speaker 1: keep them one to fifty eight, that's not that bad
- 40:18Speaker 1: of a deal. But you don't want to give up
- 40:21Speaker 1: that many yards. So you got to at least contain
- 40:24Speaker 1: the rush attack. And the thing about Pennix, you know,
- 40:29Speaker 1: and they have o line issues for one, and we
- 40:32Speaker 1: saw that kind of slowly play out as that game
- 40:34Speaker 1: went on last year and as their season went on
- 40:37Speaker 1: last year. But Pennix, you know, if you look at
- 40:42Speaker 1: like the Washington Texas game, and you look at the
- 40:45Speaker 1: Texas or the Washington Michigan game, and you know, of
- 40:50Speaker 1: course you want to pressure quarterbacks, but you can't pressure
- 40:54Speaker 1: like Williams. You can't just bring a bunch of pressure
- 40:56Speaker 1: on him because he'll juke you out too, So you
- 40:58Speaker 1: can't bring the same that's more content aiming him and
- 41:02Speaker 1: keeping him in the pocket. But the more pressure you
- 41:05Speaker 1: get on Pennix, he can be a very I mean,
- 41:08Speaker 1: he's got a great arm, he can be very accurate.
- 41:11Speaker 1: But the second you start getting some pressure on that guy,
- 41:14Speaker 1: there are some times he's still young in his career,
- 41:17Speaker 1: he does have weapons throw to not saying he's you
- 41:20Speaker 1: just pressure him and it's game over. He's a gamer,
- 41:23Speaker 1: but you know that is a key. You gotta get
- 41:27Speaker 1: some hits on him. You gotta have him force it.
- 41:30Speaker 1: Then he can't you know, throw that pretty ball that
- 41:34Speaker 1: he has and really step into the plays.
- 41:36Speaker 2: They had a close game. You know, they come in
- 41:41Speaker 2: here zero to one.
- 41:42Speaker 1: They had a you know, a pretty close game themselves.
- 41:46Speaker 1: Right now, we it open at three and a half,
- 41:48Speaker 1: We are at four and a half right now minus
- 41:51Speaker 1: four and a half. Forty four and a half is
- 41:54Speaker 1: the over under. And just talk betting in general, the
- 42:02Speaker 1: Falcons are zero in six against the spread as an
- 42:05Speaker 1: underdog over the last six games in Minnesota. As the favorite,
- 42:11Speaker 1: it are nine and one in the last ten games.
- 42:14Speaker 1: And like I said, they had a They lost twenty
- 42:16Speaker 1: three to twenty as a point and a half underdog
- 42:20Speaker 1: against Tampa, so you know we had to grind it
- 42:26Speaker 1: out too.
- 42:26Speaker 2: It's funny.
- 42:27Speaker 1: We were a favorite by one and a half, they
- 42:29Speaker 1: were an underdog by one and a half, and.
- 42:31Speaker 2: Both of them that twenty three twenty was our score
- 42:34Speaker 2: actually that we thought.
- 42:36Speaker 1: Now Tampa was able to really contain their run. They
- 42:39Speaker 1: only got sixty nine yards rushing. They gave up pretty
- 42:44Speaker 1: close to what you know, the stats this early. You know,
- 42:47Speaker 1: you don't want to dig too deep into it, but
- 42:52Speaker 1: you know they have a defense. They definitely do. I
- 42:55Speaker 1: would say the biggest thing is you can't give up
- 42:59Speaker 1: another buck on the ground. That helps any quarterback, but
- 43:03Speaker 1: especially a young guy who really does have a potential
- 43:07Speaker 1: to be a damn good quarterback. But like I said,
- 43:09Speaker 1: in college and even last year, a little bit, if
- 43:13Speaker 1: you can get to him, you know, it does make
- 43:17Speaker 1: a big difference. He's elusive, but you know it's more
- 43:20Speaker 1: like he can scramble within the pocket.
- 43:23Speaker 2: It's a totally different ballgame than some of these guys
- 43:27Speaker 2: you know that can really run and you just have
- 43:31Speaker 2: to hold on for dear life at times, and like
- 43:33Speaker 2: like I said, kind of keep them in the box
- 43:36Speaker 2: and take your lumps as they come. But yeah, I
- 43:40Speaker 2: just think the biggest thing is and it's tough to
- 43:44Speaker 2: get pressure on the quarterback. If you're giving up rushing yards,
- 43:48Speaker 2: then all of a sudden you're gonna run blitz and
- 43:50Speaker 2: that can cause all sorts of problems.
- 43:52Speaker 1: So and I did notice, you know, Flores wasn't heavy
- 43:58Speaker 1: on the blitz at the start that game in the
- 44:00Speaker 1: first half. Then second half he started, you know, pulling
- 44:03Speaker 1: him up a little bit more. But like I said,
- 44:05Speaker 1: different quarterback, different blitzes. But yeah, that Buck fifty eight
- 44:09Speaker 1: just stands out. Man.
- 44:10Speaker 2: It's a lot of yards to give up in the NFL.
- 44:16Speaker 3: Yeah, and a good running back too. I mean, b
- 44:19Speaker 3: Jon Robinson is the kind of back that we have
- 44:22Speaker 3: a hard time with. Get right in panis another year.
- 44:27Speaker 3: You know, I think you're right about pressureing him. He's
- 44:30Speaker 3: a damn good quarterback. Another one of the drafteesh in
- 44:35Speaker 3: McCarthy's draft. So going down a list of those.
- 44:39Speaker 2: Yeah, it's interesting looking back at that in like five years.
- 44:43Speaker 3: Yeah, it really is. This game, Chris, it's at home.
- 44:48Speaker 3: Uh so that'll be like, you know, McCarthy's first home game.
- 44:53Speaker 2: That's right.
- 44:54Speaker 3: It would probably be a lot of energy in the
- 44:55Speaker 3: building for that. Uh. You know. Defensively, you're right about
- 44:59Speaker 3: floors and the blitzing. I think he probably went into
- 45:01Speaker 3: that game thinking, you know, I'm not gonna I'm not
- 45:04Speaker 3: gonna need to but it weren't really getting pressure with
- 45:06Speaker 3: the four and that was cause of problems. Uh, And
- 45:10Speaker 3: you're right you don't really want to run blitz, especially
- 45:12Speaker 3: uh if a guy knows how to get the ball out,
- 45:16Speaker 3: and Pennis is good at that at times. Phoenix can
- 45:19Speaker 3: also run a little bit. He's been injured a lot,
- 45:21Speaker 3: but uh still move a bit defensively, right, they have
- 45:26Speaker 3: a defense, but you know, we have a lot of pieces,
- 45:29Speaker 3: and you know, we're two games away from Madison being
- 45:31Speaker 3: back to where it's just going to be the full
- 45:33Speaker 3: complement of of weapons.
- 45:35Speaker 2: But we still have a.
- 45:37Speaker 3: Lot of weapons. So do they have enough to cover
- 45:41Speaker 3: you know, all the guys we do have, now, that'll
- 45:43Speaker 3: be tough for them to do. Offensive lines gotta gel
- 45:46Speaker 3: a little bit better, and we got to run the football,
- 45:48Speaker 3: uh better than we started off that game, that being
- 45:52Speaker 3: the Monday night game, another Sunday night game, so now
- 45:55Speaker 3: we're back at night again. Yeah, I thought that the
- 46:00Speaker 3: the points spread a little low. I think forty four
- 46:04Speaker 3: is when I want to take the over on.
- 46:06Speaker 2: Yeah, me too.
- 46:08Speaker 3: I just feel like the balls rolling now with the
- 46:10Speaker 3: Vikings and once that gets going with O'Connell and at
- 46:15Speaker 3: the run game and Jefferson and everybody gets going, you know,
- 46:19Speaker 3: at thirty is not out of the question. Every game, No,
- 46:23Speaker 3: matter who you play, as long as j Jacob throw
- 46:25Speaker 3: it around, and he seems to be able to do that,
- 46:30Speaker 3: I want to say, I thought you broke down the
- 46:33Speaker 3: game pretty well as that. A lot more I can
- 46:35Speaker 3: add to it, I'll give you my I'm saying twenty
- 46:38Speaker 3: eight to twenty three. I think it'll be closer. It'll
- 46:41Speaker 3: appear closer than it actually is. I think we'll probably
- 46:45Speaker 3: be protecting a lead in the fourth, hopefully this time.
- 46:49Speaker 3: And you know that's the way I would like it
- 46:53Speaker 3: to go, and I think it will go that way. Yeah,
- 46:58Speaker 3: So I'm gonna go twenty eight twenty three. There's a
- 47:01Speaker 3: lot of variables with this one to Chris, and I'm
- 47:03Speaker 3: not going to go and you know, illustrate all of them.
- 47:06Speaker 3: But I think that you know it's a home game,
- 47:10Speaker 3: we'll pull it out. I think that time is gonna
- 47:15Speaker 3: be the thing, like it's going to be a slow
- 47:17Speaker 3: start again for mccarthur to get going. You know, that
- 47:22Speaker 3: could hinder the points a little bit. But defensively, I
- 47:26Speaker 3: think that's gonna be kind of the calm card when
- 47:29Speaker 3: things get rough. You'll be able to lean on the
- 47:30Speaker 3: defenses year more or as much as you did last year,
- 47:35Speaker 3: and you know it's gonna be a slow build. But
- 47:39Speaker 3: you know, we think that this first part of the
- 47:41Speaker 3: schedule is a little bit walking, and it is with
- 47:44Speaker 3: all the travel and the buy and all that stuff.
- 47:48Speaker 3: But other people think it's this is the easiest part
- 47:50Speaker 3: of the schedule. And you know, it's hard to tell
- 47:52Speaker 3: in the beginning of the season how schedule is going
- 47:54Speaker 3: to go because teams.
- 47:57Speaker 2: So it's really last year.
- 48:00Speaker 3: You know, it's real early to say the strength to
- 48:02Speaker 3: schedule here in all reality, but yeah, I like the
- 48:06Speaker 3: vikings here again, go to and zero. I'll go twenty
- 48:09Speaker 3: eight twenty three.
- 48:11Speaker 1: I am right kind of how you described it, how
- 48:14Speaker 1: I could see a late touchdown. I'm in that twenty
- 48:17Speaker 1: seven twenty three, but the one I circled was thirty
- 48:20Speaker 1: to twenty four. And when it kind of peaked my
- 48:22Speaker 1: ear when you said we can hit thirty, whether it's
- 48:26Speaker 1: twenty seven twenty three or thirty twenty four or what'd
- 48:30Speaker 1: you say, twenty eight twenty three, I think that is
- 48:34Speaker 1: a late score because I do think we're gonna be
- 48:36Speaker 1: playing with the lead.
- 48:38Speaker 2: So I'm right there with you when it comes to that.
- 48:41Speaker 1: I think there, you know, it could it could look
- 48:43Speaker 1: closer on the scoreboard.
- 48:44Speaker 2: But in the end, who really cares what happens.
- 48:50Speaker 1: Okay, So, if you've been listening to the show for
- 48:54Speaker 1: quite some time, much appreciated. If you haven't, we do talk.
- 48:59Speaker 1: It's it's Minnesota football, Okay, it's not just the Vikings.
- 49:02Speaker 1: The Gophers are back. They're gonna go to the West
- 49:05Speaker 1: Coast at cal will Cox is a very good.
- 49:08Speaker 2: Coach, very underrated coach.
- 49:11Speaker 1: And you know, last week they played a team that,
- 49:16Speaker 1: funny enough, beat al Kern State.
- 49:22Speaker 2: They had they had beat a team and it was
- 49:26Speaker 2: like thirty five to zero at the end of the
- 49:28Speaker 2: first quarter, you know, so I think he said he
- 49:31Speaker 2: had and you know, there was lightning delay. There was
- 49:34Speaker 2: gonna be some you know, there's gonna be some stuff
- 49:36Speaker 2: that I liked how they said the other seven minutes left,
- 49:39Speaker 2: d it's over. Let's just call the game. Seventy six
- 49:43Speaker 2: players played for the Gophers.
- 49:48Speaker 1: Washington the young buck running back, true redshirt freshman. He
- 49:53Speaker 1: got the bulk of the carries, but a bunch of
- 49:56Speaker 1: different people scored touchdowns. I mean right off the bat,
- 49:59Speaker 1: a pick six in a scoop and score like it
- 50:03Speaker 1: was just crazy. But that's exactly what that game's there for.
- 50:07Speaker 1: That team did get five hundred thousand dollars, so it
- 50:10Speaker 1: does keep their program going.
- 50:12Speaker 2: I mean, it is what it is.
- 50:15Speaker 1: I liked how you know, we got Shick in there,
- 50:17Speaker 1: a little Chicken Zanski and a lot of people that
- 50:21Speaker 1: are young just hearing this name for the first time.
- 50:23Speaker 1: But you know, shit goes back with the Minnesota basketball
- 50:28Speaker 1: squat is Pops, So I was it was kind of
- 50:31Speaker 1: good to see who was the backup because you know,
- 50:36Speaker 1: you just never know knock on wood obviously, but so
- 50:41Speaker 1: you know, got a bunch of players they played.
- 50:43Speaker 2: Everything's great. Now we're at Cal and and you know,
- 50:46Speaker 2: at the at the beginning of the year, I felt
- 50:49Speaker 2: pretty good about this game. You know, Miami almost lost
- 50:53Speaker 2: on the road at Cal last year.
- 50:56Speaker 1: Auburn did and and the year before they had it
- 51:00Speaker 1: was like a really close game, and I think that
- 51:03Speaker 1: was in Auburn. But you know, they lost a fair
- 51:09Speaker 1: amount of talent, their quarterback Mendoza. Is that Indiana now
- 51:12Speaker 1: that they lost talent, and then they lost talent in
- 51:15Speaker 1: the spring and we know from a few years ago
- 51:18Speaker 1: we lost our Nli wasn't up and ready to go
- 51:22Speaker 1: at that point and.
- 51:23Speaker 2: Not as good it is now. And we lost some.
- 51:26Speaker 1: Guys that turns out to them and went to the
- 51:28Speaker 1: Big twelve and they made all Big twelve defensive teams,
- 51:31Speaker 1: so that hurt. And then you know, they got this
- 51:36Speaker 1: true freshman that.
- 51:38Speaker 2: Came in late. They didn't even come in when you
- 51:41Speaker 2: normally come in.
- 51:41Speaker 1: So I felt pretty good about it until I saw
- 51:45Speaker 1: the kid throw the ball.
- 51:46Speaker 2: And when I seen the kid throw the boy said, oh,
- 51:48Speaker 2: we might have a problem here. Now.
- 51:50Speaker 1: The one thing I'll say is his pocket. The Oregon
- 51:55Speaker 1: State's not what they were. They their coach that had
- 51:57Speaker 1: them a quall the solid, respectable team. He's at Michigan
- 52:03Speaker 1: State now looks like they're starting to turn the corner
- 52:05Speaker 1: and we're gonna see them later in the schedule. But
- 52:08Speaker 1: you know, the one thing I'll say, Aaron, is it
- 52:12Speaker 1: was super clean pockets.
- 52:14Speaker 2: Right. He does look like he can move though. He
- 52:18Speaker 2: looks like a prototype really, and he may not be
- 52:21Speaker 2: you know, no no shot at Cow, but he may
- 52:23Speaker 2: not be there next year.
- 52:24Speaker 1: He may get a deal. But when I saw him
- 52:29Speaker 1: make a couple of these throws, Aaron, it all of
- 52:33Speaker 1: a sudden I had to be like, hold on dude.
- 52:36Speaker 1: And then to make matters worse, Darius Taylor pulls up
- 52:41Speaker 1: with a hammy now you know, on the first drive.
- 52:44Speaker 2: And you know, they said they got some good news
- 52:48Speaker 2: about Taylor, but we'd have to see if he's actually
- 52:52Speaker 2: out there even halfway practicing to see if he he'd play.
- 52:56Speaker 2: So good news means the MRI was pretty good.
- 52:58Speaker 1: But you know the MRI, I was pretty good with
- 53:01Speaker 1: JJ And yeah, he's not making that kind of money,
- 53:05Speaker 1: but he's an important.
- 53:06Speaker 2: Part to our team.
- 53:06Speaker 1: Tailor is, and we saw we shut him down right away,
- 53:10Speaker 1: like you're not seeing the field for a month, dude,
- 53:12Speaker 1: you know. So I'm guessing Tailor's not gonna play so
- 53:15Speaker 1: right away. That's probably why Washington got so many carries
- 53:18Speaker 1: because they say, if we get there, we got a
- 53:21Speaker 1: transfer kid who's got some speed. We got a two
- 53:24Speaker 1: young bucks that are gonna play. But man, they're to
- 53:28Speaker 1: go along with this quarterback. I'm long winded, sorry, but
- 53:32Speaker 1: you've known me long enough, you know I'm long winded.
- 53:37Speaker 2: To go along with it. They're gonna play good fundamental front,
- 53:42Speaker 2: like the front seven is gonna be a good defense.
- 53:44Speaker 2: That's what that Will Cox is. So I'm nervous about
- 53:48Speaker 2: this game, man, and I'll full disclosure, I have it's
- 53:53Speaker 2: gone down. We open up two and a half. Some
- 53:55Speaker 2: books had.
- 53:56Speaker 1: US three, but it's gone down so one and a
- 54:00Speaker 1: half now. And even the money line just taking Cal
- 54:04Speaker 1: straight up went from one twenty one to plus well
- 54:08Speaker 1: plus one twenty one to plus one o three now,
- 54:13Speaker 1: full disclosure, I have a plus one twenty two or
- 54:17Speaker 1: one twenty one with Cal. I'm a little nervous in
- 54:21Speaker 1: this one all of a sudden.
- 54:24Speaker 3: Who are on the road. It's that calm like a.
- 54:29Speaker 2: Ten.
- 54:30Speaker 3: Yeah, well, wall I look at it, Chris Is. They
- 54:35Speaker 3: might put an emphasis on their defensive line and stuff,
- 54:38Speaker 3: but do they have the talent? You know, are they
- 54:40Speaker 3: big ten? Can they match a big ten offensive and
- 54:43Speaker 3: defensive line? That'll be a big, a big uh yeah,
- 54:47Speaker 3: that's there. Leak some of those we saw last year,
- 54:51Speaker 3: how USC and UCLA and all kind of got a
- 54:54Speaker 3: taste of what big ten offensive lines and defensive lines
- 54:57Speaker 3: look like. They didn't fare too well. Teams did because
- 55:00Speaker 3: their blue bloods like Oregon and Washington and whatever, and
- 55:03Speaker 3: they even had a little bit of trouble, but they
- 55:06Speaker 3: were able to, you know, with talent kind of make
- 55:10Speaker 3: up the difference, right, I did see the quarterback. You're right,
- 55:15Speaker 3: for a true freshman, you're thinking, oh, okay, we'll rattle
- 55:17Speaker 3: or whatever, right right, and you're like, this is a
- 55:20Speaker 3: this is a future NFL quarterback, And you're right. He
- 55:23Speaker 3: might not be there the year after, but he's there now.
- 55:27Speaker 3: So we had to prepare for him running back. Taylor,
- 55:30Speaker 3: like you said, look like he's got a hamming and
- 55:33Speaker 3: you probably want to sit hammings, right at least for
- 55:34Speaker 3: a week. This it's just a minor, real, real minor thing,
- 55:39Speaker 3: and we don't know how that is yet.
- 55:41Speaker 2: I guess he didn't.
- 55:42Speaker 1: He wasn't sitting on the sidelines with Ice on it
- 55:45Speaker 1: right away either, so did take because they had a
- 55:48Speaker 1: long conversation. Not to cut you off, but they had
- 55:50Speaker 1: a long conversation him and Fleck on the sidelines. And
- 55:54Speaker 1: you wonder if he was trying to get back in
- 55:56Speaker 1: the game or what. I don't know, I don't know.
- 56:00Speaker 1: Maybe they just we won't know till two hours before
- 56:02Speaker 1: they kickoff.
- 56:03Speaker 3: Yeah, maybe they pull out the stationary bike and nt
- 56:07Speaker 3: keep it warm, you know, you know, but like we
- 56:11Speaker 3: have backs, uh yeah, dynamic as Taylor or experienced. Probably not,
- 56:18Speaker 3: but so that'll be a loss there. You know, the
- 56:23Speaker 3: line keeps moving, like you said, so obviously somebody knows something.
- 56:27Speaker 3: But then again, we're very early in the college football
- 56:30Speaker 3: season too, and uh so things get a little wonky
- 56:33Speaker 3: as far as as concerned.
- 56:34Speaker 2: But probably move because of Taylor. You know.
- 56:37Speaker 3: Yeah, it's the big Test. I mean, it's not the
- 56:39Speaker 3: Big Test, but it's the first test, real test this season.
- 56:44Speaker 3: So it's not in Iowa. It's not a Wisconsin or
- 56:48Speaker 3: a Michigan or Ohio state where you've been seeing these
- 56:50Speaker 3: guys a lot. So there's a lot of questions there. Well,
- 56:56Speaker 3: like I said, it's it's the test. Uh and you know,
- 56:59Speaker 3: the game has from what we saw when we opened
- 57:02Speaker 3: the schedule to where it is now. Like we're talking
- 57:04Speaker 3: about the NFL, how things change so dramatically throughout the
- 57:09Speaker 3: course of the season, you know this one's changed too.
- 57:11Speaker 3: So yeah, I'm a little nervous going in. And I
- 57:14Speaker 3: don't think it was a gimme even before we saw
- 57:17Speaker 3: the quarterback exactly. It was one where you thought if
- 57:20Speaker 3: you played well, you'd win. But now you know, we're
- 57:24Speaker 3: gonna test Perish and we're gonna test you know, Baranowski
- 57:28Speaker 3: and these safeties and these corners, and they're gonna have
- 57:31Speaker 3: to uh to show up and play now on our
- 57:35Speaker 3: for our advantage. He is a true freshman. There's probably
- 57:37Speaker 3: some things he hasn't seen a little bit, so you
- 57:41Speaker 3: might be able to trick him, get some picks. Let
- 57:43Speaker 3: your experience give you the advantage.
- 57:47Speaker 2: Uh.
- 57:47Speaker 3: But yeah, also, you know talent. We did face some
- 57:50Speaker 3: talented quarterbacks in the past, but not like prodigies. And
- 57:55Speaker 3: this kid looks like a prodigy. This kid looks like
- 57:58Speaker 3: I would hate to go against him at height schools.
- 58:00Speaker 3: It's probably just throwing all over the place. Yeah, I
- 58:04Speaker 3: don't or anything, but you know, the bigger looks the.
- 58:09Speaker 2: Part to our kid, our red chirt freshman looks the
- 58:11Speaker 2: part too. We can't forget about that, right.
- 58:14Speaker 6: Yeah, and he's been in the system for for a
- 58:16Speaker 6: year now. So yeah, I gotta like the Gophers. I
- 58:20Speaker 6: think the lines will make the difference at least. I
- 58:24Speaker 6: gotta think that it will be a blowout or anything.
- 58:26Speaker 3: I don't think so, because I think even if you
- 58:29Speaker 3: get up this kid, if you drop you know, drop
- 58:32Speaker 3: your guard this kid and get you back in a
- 58:34Speaker 3: game quick as long as they got receivers. But I'll
- 58:38Speaker 3: take the Gophers in this one. Keep the ball rolling
- 58:42Speaker 3: with them as well. I'm gonna say probably higher scoring game,
- 58:47Speaker 3: but not too high, so i'd say high.
- 58:49Speaker 2: It's forty two and a half. Is the over under
- 58:52Speaker 2: forty two and a half?
- 58:53Speaker 3: I take the over on that one too. I have
- 58:56Speaker 3: to take the over on that one too, because I
- 58:57Speaker 3: think it'll be thirty one, twenty five, twenty four or
- 59:03Speaker 3: something like that. It'll be in the fifties for sure,
- 59:05Speaker 3: it's got to be if we can score. I might
- 59:08Speaker 3: be underestimating their defense. You know, you may have a
- 59:11Speaker 3: better handle on that than I do. But I think
- 59:14Speaker 3: you'll be able to run the ball, and if you
- 59:15Speaker 3: can run the ball, you'll be able to throw the ball,
- 59:17Speaker 3: so on and so forth. So I think the Gophers
- 59:20Speaker 3: just got of pure size on the lines will win
- 59:23Speaker 3: this one.
- 59:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 59:24Speaker 1: I mean that's six six, three thirty. Most of them
- 59:27Speaker 1: are that. And it does look like they leaned into
- 59:30Speaker 1: the running game, like, yeah, these guys that we brought
- 59:33Speaker 1: in as transfers aren't perfect as far as an all
- 59:38Speaker 1: around offensive lineman, but it looked like they want to
- 59:41Speaker 1: get back to the meat and potatoes to take the
- 59:43Speaker 1: pressure off Lindsey and get that play action going.
- 59:47Speaker 2: You have a legit tight end.
- 59:49Speaker 1: It's funny, like a while ago, before you know, this
- 59:53Speaker 1: kid made his debut, the analytics had us like fifty
- 59:59Speaker 1: five forty five. I saw some sixty.
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: Forties, and then like after that first game, it was
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: like Cal was favored by just a little bit.
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: And so it's pretty even right now. I'm looking at
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: the ESPN analytics fifty two point six percent chance for
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: the tip for the Timbrols for the Gophers to forty
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: seven point four. So that is actually really swung back
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: and forth in a short amount of time. Usually don't
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: see it quite like that.
- 1:00:30Speaker 3: I just had the thought, Chris, I just had the
- 1:00:32Speaker 3: thought that this could be an old school like Fleck
- 1:00:34Speaker 3: game where they just run and eat the clock. Good
- 1:00:37Speaker 3: strategy to go against a quarterback fenom like that is
- 1:00:40Speaker 3: just don't give.
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: Him the ball, Yeah, keep him on the sidelines looking
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: at film and stuff.
- 1:00:45Speaker 3: I keep the score rather low, so then truly might
- 1:00:50Speaker 3: want to hit that under. It just depends on what
- 1:00:51Speaker 3: you think Flex's gonna do.
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: Yep, that's a good point. I wouldn't doubt if they
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: try to run Blue.
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: It's like Buffalo did and say, all right, we're gonna
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: see you know, we're gonna see not only Lindsey, but
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: we're gonna see if we contain their run, especially without Taylor.
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: We're gonna see these wide receivers that are not one
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: proven Tracy the the guy we got who's got two
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: years eligibility who you know in the transfer portal.
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: He was like an all mac type guy.
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: He looks the part of a guy that can be productive,
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: but we're gonna need him to be Jalen Smith. That
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: guy has a ton of potential. Will he not drop
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: the ball? Speaking to drop in the ball, you know
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: our tight end. Speaking of looking the part, this guy
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: is a big old dude six five, two fifty. Really
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: came on last year, but he does have those scratch
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: your head drops. Brockington can come on like we we
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: don't have that one, Daniel Jackson, but we It does
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: feel like if we can get guys in space, we
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: can get guys one on one if we can, you know.
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: But that kind of goes with the run and.
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: The play action, and so I am gonna I am
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: gonna predict that we win it, but I'm kinda kind
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: of what you just got done saying about just banging.
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: Try to bang these guys up and move the chains.
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: And so I think it may be something like twenty
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: three to seventeen or twenty four to twenty or something
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: like that, and it may be, you know, it may
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: be a late field goal. But I am gonna go
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: with the Gophers just because, yeah, they got this youngster,
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: but we got a youngster too that looked pretty good.
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: And uh, actually his number one wide receiver looks pretty
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: legit too. But kind of going back to what you said,
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: you know, bang them out six six, three point thirty,
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: you know, do that.
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: For sixty minutes and see what happens. But I don't
- 1:03:00Speaker 2: I think i'd be a more confident if I hadn't
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: seen the kid they got, right. But also Taylor man like,
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: he's our he's our bell Coow, and I like these
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: other pieces we got it running back, don't get me wrong.
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: And the Washington kid look legit, but that the.
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: Fact that he got twenty carries or whatever kind of
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: tells me they're gonna be like, well, we better get
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: this in just in case.
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: We need him.
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: You never know, So without Taylor and having that little
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: you know, not to say some of these guys, you know,
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: like a J. Turner or Davis, they can catch you know,
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: balls out of the backfield too.
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: I mean, Davis already has a few.
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: So you know, hopefully they picked that up from Taylor
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: to to really get out of that something Lindsay said,
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: you know with Max last year, to get out of
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: that backfield quick and just be that little check down
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: thing and keep the you know, let him break a
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: tackle and and so you know, obviously more confident with Taylor,
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: but you know, I guess we'll have to find out.
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: It'd be nice though, if you get this win, you
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: start out three and oh, you literally get a buye
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: before you take on Ruggers. And we know last year
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: they got a buy and we know that there's a
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: lot of crossover coaching here in the offense. Really there's
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: a turnover late in that game that kind of set
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: them up to score and win that game. Otherwise could have,
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: would have, should have, but that that game was very
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: winnable and that was on the road. So we're gonna
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: get the two weeks to prepare for them this time,
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: so you know, to have that three and oh start
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: man it'd be so big. And you know, also if
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: Taylor is just kind of tweaked a little bit and
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: he felt a little something and figured he'd mention it.
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: You know, I was hoping it was a cramp, but
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: once you grab the hammy, you don't see as many
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: cramps there, right. You see it in the lower leg,
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: but sometimes you see it in the groin area and
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: all that too, So you know, it's a mixture. We'll
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: see if he's out there running around or if he's
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: just shut down all the way, like like Jay Jetta was.
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: But I'm with you.
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: I think I think the Gophers are gonna win it,
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: but you know, it might be just one of those
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: like hey, welcome to uh. I mean, they are cal
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: is in the ACC now, but you know, we got
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: a power for it. But really, the SEC and the
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: big ten, there is a there is a notch up
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: now and it's only going to keep growing that way. Yeah,
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: and spare and spar Yeah, I hope it's not one
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: of those seasons. We did have a few of those.
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah, figures.
- 1:05:33Speaker 3: Back, but we're down to like the last running back
- 1:05:36Speaker 3: on the roster, true freshman.
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: Funny thing is, yeah, let's just say, Bucky, what's going on?
- 1:05:44Speaker 3: You know?
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: So, but you're right, you know, let's hope it's not that, man.
- 1:05:49Speaker 3: Yeah, let's hope for two wins this week, Vikings against
- 1:05:54Speaker 3: Atlanta and the Gophers at cal if you can stay
- 1:05:57Speaker 3: ab late enough to watch that one finish up, we'll
- 1:06:00Speaker 3: talk about it next week.
